Why should I buy eco-friendly washing up liquid?

Many of the washing up liquids that dominate supermarket shelves are brimming with toxic chemicals (namely petroleum-based surfactants) that flood our waterways, disrupting delicate ecosystems and harming aquatic life. You may find they dry out your hands, especially if you have sensitive skin, and their synthetic fragrances may give you a headache or make you feel nauseous. They also tend to be packaged in plastic bottles that can’t always be recycled.

Of course, the term ‘eco’ can mean many things. The products on our list aren’t perfect, but they likely boast more green credentials than your go-to washing up liquid. Some are made using gentler biodegradable ingredients that are safe for wildlife, others come in recycled packaging and most are naturally scented, if at all.

Increasingly, environmentally-conscious brands (like Bower) are offering refill pouches to help minimise plastic waste. Consider concentrated solutions that you dilute at home, too – the less water a brand unnecessarily transports, the smaller its carbon footprint.

How much washing up liquid should I use?

You shouldn’t need to use more than a couple of squirts of non-concentrated washing up liquid per sink full of water. Being too liberal wastes both money and water, as the surplus suds will take longer to rinse off your dishes. Leave heavily dirtied pots and pans to soak for a few minutes before scrubbing.

How we test

Our expert testers trialled 12 brands of eco-friendly washing up liquid. Firstly, they counted how many greasy plates they could clean with one manufacturer-recommended dose. Then, they repeated the test using dirtied full place settings – everything from side plates and wine glasses to cutlery and dessert bowls, covered in egg yolk, spinach puree and cereal.

We also sent each product to 10 panellists and asked for their feedback on everything from cleaning performance to ease of use, consistency, scent and packaging.

It’s not magic, but it’s clever. Washing up liquid contains molecules with two sides – one loves water and the other hates it. The hydrophobic side grabs onto grease (i.e. the food residue on your plate) but the hydrophilic side is stronger and pulls the molecule into the water, taking all that oil and grime with it.

How much washing up liquid should I use?

Most of us use more washing up liquid than we need to, which wastes money, time and water (as rinsing takes longer). The recommended dose varies between brands, but you shouldn’t need more than 5ml (1.5 teaspoons or a couple of squirts) of non-concentrated formula per five litres of water.

If you’re tackling heavily stained pots and pans, let them soak in your solution for a few minutes before scrubbing. Don’t make the mistake of adding more washing up liquid as soon as the suds disappear, as there should still be plenty of formula left in your water.

Should I rinse my dishes after washing up?

Ideally, yes. Nobody wants the lingering taste of soap in their Sunday roast, and leftover washing up liquid can leave unattractive smears on glass. But most importantly, it’s better for your health. Most mainstream formulas contain the chemical sodium laureth sulphate (SLS), which causes foam and strengthens the cleaning process. Unfortunately, it’s an irritant, so it’s best to get it all off before eating from your plates.

What happens if you put washing up liquid in the dishwasher?

In short, don’t do it. Only put dishwasher-safe products into your machine, else you risk not only damaging it, but also being left with a mammoth clean-up mission to tackle. Unlike dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid produces bubbles, which will quickly fill your dishwasher and seep out of the tiniest of gaps, filling your kitchen with suds. This foam can block your machine’s pipes and filters and stop it draining properly.

Too late? Stop the dishwasher. Lay down towels to soak up all those suds and thoroughly clean out the dispenser to remove any trace of washing up liquid. If the foam still isn’t disappearing, pour a mug of white vinegar inside your machine to help banish those bubbles. Run a couple of cycles until it’s fully clean and dry.

How we test

The GHI team put 18 brands of washing up liquid through two rigorous tests. Firstly, they counted how many greasy plates one manufacturer-recommended dose could bring to a clean finish.

Next, they counted how many dirtied full place settings the same suggested dose could plough through, after covering said crockery and glassware in a variety of foods, including wheat cereal, egg yolk and spinach puree.

We also sent each washing up liquid to ten panellists, who gave their feedback on everything from cleaning performance to scent, longevity and packaging.

True, they not only do their job well – washing dishes, but they are also difficult to wash off the surface. Information about the dangers of dishwashing chemicals is spreading all over the world. Therefore, it is not surprising that recently more and more products have appeared that do not contain chemicals, including surfactants. Moreover, some netizens deliberately disseminate information about alternative, ecological means that will not harm either the person himself or the environment.

1. Mustard powder

For example, ordinary ground mustard – mustard powder – copes well with various soiling of dishes. This is a 100% natural product that does not pose any threat to the human body. Even if, after rinsing the dishes, partial mustards remain on it, they will not do any harm when they get inside the body. Yes, mustard powder does not produce any foam, which is unusual at first, but it does a great job of washing dishes.

2. Baking soda

Not everyone knows that baking soda is an excellent cleaning agent that can be used to remove dirt, including grease, from plates, a kettle, frying pans, etc. Also, the advantages of this tool include the fact that it can completely neutralize the acidic tastes of water. Moreover, soda is used not only to wash dishes or the surface of kitchen utensils, it is also rubbed with various cutlery.

Please note that baking soda is abrasive and not suitable for all surfaces, such as Teflon-coated dishes. To enhance the detergents of this powder, a solution of laundry soap is often added to it.

3. Laundry soap
