Hi, it is possible to fit the blinds directly to the plastic but is not advised as a, it will probably invalidate any warranty on the windows (I would get written acknowledgement that the company are OK with holes being drilled into the frame and will honour the warranty) and b, the blind will drop too close to the frame and foul the handle. Ideally the fixings should be into the reveal sides (if deep enough) rather then the top as a better fixing is available and any force is working perpendicular to the fixing. Both Venetian and roller blinds usually have brackets at each end. Fixing into the top is tricky due to the lintel (metal or concrete) and because any force is pulling the fixing out. I would add that there are many variables and each type of window/reveal throws up issues.

There are blinds that fit into their own frames that fit directly to the upvc windows and doors, they have a fitting that pushes between the glass and upvc, this means no drilling to the frames also means when you open the windows or doors the blinds don’t flap around.

If you haven’t already installed your blinds you may want to consider if they can be installed outside the recess. It’s far easier and as long as you use the correct wall plugs for the wall type you should be ok. If internal recess fitting avoid drilling in to the PVC. You might want to consider fitting a batten to the upper side and fix your roller to this. Best regards

Hi, There is excellent solution to get a lovely fit onto UPVC windows. The blind calls “Perfect Fit blind”. There is view kind of them. They are fitted directly to the window frame without any damage and no need to drill even one hole in the window frame. You can get them as a Venetian blind, Pleated blind, Roller in choice of 100s of fabric .If you go for standard Venetian than you should go for side fix. If you go for standard roller than rather top fix because the bracket for rollers are bend to 90 degrees. There is no wall with have exactly 90 degrees in top corner window recess so if you go for side fix than most brackets come of a bit from the top and it will effect the cosmetic look.If you find out that there is a metal on the top of window recess pre-drill using masonry drill when you rich the metal use self-drive screws or use drill for metal approx 3mm and go trough metal, it is usually only 2mm thick than use 4mm screws.Strong fitting when you fix into metal, great when your window is really wide. I hope I was a bit helpful :).

All the best

Andy

It’s never advisable to go through the upvc for many reasons, warranty, to close to vents etc. However if needs must then you could do it.

The best option is to go from above and into the wall using correct plugs to secure it.

How to Install Inside Mount Blinds on Vinyl Windows – Factory Direct Blinds

Vinyl windows are one of the most popular and affordable window options, but they do present some limitation when it comes to hanging blinds. Here’s what you need to know about the pros and cons of vinyl windows and how to install inside mount blinds on vinyl windows.

How to Install Inside Mount Blinds on Vinyl Windows: Step-by-Step

Whether you’re installing mini blinds, roller shades, faux wood blinds, cellular shades, or another treatment altogether, follow these DIY steps to inside mount blinds on your vinyl windows.

  • Unpack the blinds and get the mounting brackets. Position them so they are flush and level with the top of the window frame, and then mark the screw holes using a pencil. If your blinds include a valance, be sure to make an allowance for that, before marking the screw holes.
  • Attach first one bracket and then the other to the wall using a drill or screwdriver. If using a screwdriver, create pilot holes first by tapping a nail with a hammer and then removing the nail. Make sure the brackets are aligned, and then tighten the screws
  • If the window needs additional support brackets, determine their placement using a tape measure and a leveller, mark the screw holes with a pencil, and mount them using the same steps outlined above. Keep in mind, “centre” support brackets will actually need to be placed off to the side to avoid interfering with the mechanisms at the top.
  • Attach the valance clips to the front of the budget blinds before mounting them. Make sure the clips do not interfere with any mechanisms at the top.
  • Set the headrail into the brackets. Close the end brackets and make sure they have snapped securely in place
  • Finish assembling the valance by attached the small side pieces to the main front piece. Snap the valance into the clips; first the top, then the bottom.
  • Test your new blinds to make sure they work, and enjoy!

Blind installation is simple once you know these simple steps. DIY projects can be tricky, but with the right knowledge and properly-measured window coverings, inside mount installation easy as pie.

Deciding if You Can Install Inside Mount Blinds on Your Vinyl Windows

First you need to assess your window and how deep it is. If your window is rather deep, you might be able to inside mount the blinds to the existing drywall without having to worry about the window frame or trim. This approach works well with lighter vertical blinds made of materials such as aluminium and vinyl; heavier wooden blinds need to be anchored to a stud or solid wood trim.

Budget Blinds Are Affordable and High-Quality

If you don’t have a ledge of drywall that can support your blinds, then it’s time to look at the frame of the window itself. If your house is older and the windows were replaced at some point, the original wood frame might have been left, leaving the new vinyl window simply nesting in the old frame. If the original wood window frame is still in place, you might be able to affix the brackets directly to the wood for an inside mount if you’re tight on space.

You should not screw directly into the frame of the vinyl window. This can compromise the functionality of the window and also void the warranty—not to mention, the vinyl frame isn’t strong enough to hold the weight of the blinds. Instead, you should attach the brackets to the top and sides of the inside opening; make sure the bottom of the blinds won’t bang into the vinyl finger-hold at the bottom of the window when fully extended.

Differences Between Inside And Outside Mount Blinds

When it comes to installing blinds, there are two different ways that you can go about it. You can either install the blinds on the inside of the window frame, or you can install them on the outside of the window frame. There are pros and cons to both methods, so it’s important to know what those are before making a decision.

What is an Inside Mount?

An inside mount is exactly as it sounds. The blinds are mounted on the inside of the window frame, so they sit flush with the window. This is a good option if you want your blinds to be as close to the window as possible, and if you don’t want any light to seep in around the edges.

When Should You Install Blinds with an Inside Mount?

There are a few different scenarios in which you might want to choose an inside mount. For example, if your window is very shallow, you might not have enough space to install blinds with an outside mount; if you have windows that are close together, an inside mount can help create the illusion of more space; and if you have windows with a lot of trim, an inside mount can help minimise the amount of trim that’s visible.

How to Measure for Inside Mount Blinds

If you’ve decided that an inside mount is the right option for your window treatments, the next step is to measure them so you can order the correct size. When measuring for inside mount blinds, you need to take three measurements: the width, the height, and the depth.

  • Width: Measure the width of the window at three points – at the top, in the middle, and at the bottom. Use the narrowest measurement, as this is what will determine the width of your blinds.
  • Height: Measure the height of the window at three points – at the left, in the middle, and at the right. Use the shortest measurement, as this is what will determine the height of your blinds.
  • Depth: Measure the depth of the window sill. This is important because you need to make sure that your blinds will fit within that space. The depth measurement will also determine how far your blinds will sit from the window.

Once you have your measurements, you’re ready to order your inside mount blinds!

What is an Outside Mount?

While inside mount window blinds sit flush with the window, outside mount blinds extend beyond the window frame. They are mounted on the wall above the window, or on the ceiling above the window. You’ll often see outside mount blinds on larger windows, or windows that are not centred in the room.

When Should You Install Blinds with an Outside Mount?

Outside mount blinds are often used when there is not enough space for inside mount blinds. If your window is very shallow, or if you have windows that are close together, an outside mount can give you the coverage you need. Outside mount blinds can also be a good option if you want to create the illusion of taller windows.

How to Measure for Outside Mount Blinds

Measuring for outside mount blinds is a little different than measuring for inside mount blinds. When measuring for outside mount blinds, you need to take four measurements: the width, the height, the projection, and the drop.

  • Width: Measure the width of the area where you want to install your blinds. You want to make sure that you have enough space for the width of the blinds, plus about 3-6 inches on either side so they can be mounted to the wall.
  • Height: Measure the height of the area where you want to install your blinds. You want to make sure that you have enough space for the height of the blinds, plus about 3-6 inches on either side so they can be mounted to the wall.
  • Projection: Measure how far out from the wall you want your blinds to project. This will determine how deep your blinds need to be.
  • Drop: Measure how far down from the ceiling you want your blinds to hang. This will determine the length of your blinds.

Once you have your measurements, you’re ready to order your outside mount blinds!

The Pros and Cons of Vinyl Windows

There are three main types of window frames: vinyl, aluminium, and wood. Vinyl is, by far, the cheapest of the three options—a major contributing factor to their popularity. Vinyl window frames also provide an excellent seal and stand up well to the elements over time, which is why getting vinyl windows is one of the energy-efficient ways to cut costs this summer.

You can also further improve the thermal performance of vinyl-framed windows with extra insulation. Because of this durability, vinyl window frames are very low-maintenance and resist extreme heat, moisture, or freezing temperatures.

Go with Cordless Shades for a Sleek and Simple Look

However, vinyl window frames do have some drawbacks. For one, they are often a bit clunkier than the frames made of wood or aluminium. They also can’t be painted over, so you’re stuck with the initial colour. Finally, vinyl window frames can make it tricky to install inside mount blinds because the vinyl isn’t strong enough to directly support the weight of the blind.

If you are considering a window replacement and want to inside mount the blinds afterwards, it’s important to take careful measurements to ensure everything will fit with the new vinyl windows. (If you’re not sure how, check out our guide that explains how to measure for blinds.)

FAQ

Can I install blinds on the inside window frame?

Yes, you can install blinds on the inside window frame. This is called an inside mount; the process is similar to installing blinds on any other type of window.

Where should inside mount blinds be placed?

Ideally, inside mount blinds should be placed so that they are evenly spaced within the window frame. This can be accomplished by measuring the width of the window frame and dividing it by the number of blinds you wish to install.

How far in to mount inside mount blinds?

The distance from the edge of the window frame will depend on the size of your blinds. For smaller blinds, you may want to install them 1/2″ to 1″ from the edge of the window frame. For larger blinds, you may want to install them 2″ to 3″ from the edge of the window frame.

How do you install flush mount blinds?

Flush mount blinds sit within the window frame, so they do not protrude past the edge of the window. To install flush mount blinds, the measurements of the inside window dimensions need to be very precise; the blind is then installed completely within the window frame.

fixing venetian blind to upvc window frame?

Hi, some advice would be appreciated!
We’ve had an extension built and wish to fit a venetian blind (already made
to measure and delivered) into the window recess.
Unfortunately there is a steel lintel right above the plasterboard which
prevents me top mounting the blind in the way I’ve done before, using
plasterboard plugs. As the windows are upvc I’m really not sure about making
holes in the window frame, how to do it or whether it would work. The
builder has advised that the window company won’t invalidate the guarantee
if I do this.
This must be a reasonably common problem – can someone advise? Is there
another solution using some kind of adhesive? (“No more nails?”) And if the
answer is to make holes in the plastic window frame, any advice on how to do
it so it won’t fall down?
Thanks.

Most plasterboard fixings need quite a lot of room behind the board to
enable them to expand. These Fischer Plasterboard Plugs use much less space
(see pictures)

formatting link

you could try these Metal Easi-Drivers , very strong fix & not much
longer than the thickness of the board

formatting link

12mm board & a 3mm skim you should have room for either. Stick a
bradawl through till it touches the lintel & measure the depth.

I have used twin thread woodscrews before, if the client gives permission.
They grip into upvc very well. Straight in with drill driver, no pilot.

I agree with Dave on this, just screw into the plastic but make sure
your screws aren’t too long as they might go right through the frame
and foul the window.
Another way to do it is to fix the brackets to the side of the recess,
i.e. into the wall. Most blind fittings have holes in their brackets
to allow this.

Thanks for the advice.
I must admit I was expecting to be told NOT to make
holes in the UPVC!
Can you advise what length screws to go for if I’m
going into the UPVC? How thick is the UPVC, I’ve
always imagined it’s very thin with lots of air behind
it.
Re twin thread woodscrews, are they easy to get at say

It’s only 2-3mm thick, but there might be more than one layer of plastic
which you can drill through. Sometimes there’s a metal frame hidden
somewhere inside the upvc – you can drill and screw through as many layers
as you like, or you can accept it as a limit. Stopping before you see
daylight is considered good form.

Dead easy – look at the depth of your blind fittings, and choose a screw
length that will stick out for 25mm or so beyond that.
Buy a small pack of self-tapping screws if you want something really simple,
or a pack of twinthread woodscrews (threaded for full length of screw) if
you want to keep the rest for future odd-jobs. No. 6 size will be fine if
there’s several screws going in at each end, probably No.8 if there’s only
one at each end.
Use a 2mm drill, or a hand bradawl, or any other sharp pointy thing, to make
a pilot hole where the screw is going to go. Needs to be about half the
width of the screws you’re going to use. This will reduce any problems with
slipping, and helps to double check measurements.
If you’re not sure you’ve lined it up correctly, just move it – the
redundant screw hole is likely to be hidden under the fitting anyway, but if
not a dab of paint or tippex will cover it.

Can I Have Perfect Fit Blinds?

Posted: 6 Jan 2022

Perfect Fit blinds (as pictured above) are a popular easy-fit choice for house windows, but do they work in all situations? “Perfect Fit” does not actually refer to the type of blind, but the frame surrounding it. The Perfect Fit frame can be push-fitted between the glass and neoprene gaskets of UPVC windows. Without the need for drilling or screwing.

However, due to their bulky frame, we tend to use them only in limited situations. A drawback to these fitted framed are they cover parts of the glass and essentially make the window smaller. Similarly, they do not offer a solution for glazing that has aluminium or timber framing, only UPVC. So, we do not recommend Perfect Fit blinds for sliding doors, folding doors, roofs, or awkwardly shaped glazing.

Perfect Fit Blinds for Sliding and Folding Doors

Perfect Fit Blinds are not the best window covering for sliding and folding doors due to their bulky framework. Their frames can interfere with the smooth operation of doors whether that be sliding or bi-folding doors, causing them to be dysfunctional. You could use them for a common push-pull door but it would still make the window appear smaller.

What we recommend: A better solution for sliding and folding doors is a blind that uses our unique pure™ rail. This is where we fit a blind into the recess of each door panel with two thin rails; one at the top and one at the bottom. Therefore, the doors can fold back completely without the blinds affecting the operation of the door.

Perfect Fit Blinds for Conservatory Roofs

The Perfect Fit frame solely works for square and rectangular shapes, which makes it only suitable for push-pull doors or side blinds. Otherwise, they cause large unsightly gaps when used in other shapes. For conservatory roofs, people tend to need more precise and awkwardly shaped windows catered to; therefore Perfect Fit blinds would be an imperfect solution for this.

A popular choice for conservatory blinds is our pure™ pleated and Duette®blinds. They are designed to tackle awkwardly shaped glazing such as triangular, trapezoid, or apex windows. We can cover almost any window no matter how big or small.

Frameworks and Fabric

In regards to your current framing, Perfect-fit blinds can work only on UPVC windows. For this, we offer cordless Venetian blinds, Pleated Perfect Fit blinds, and Roller blinds. With roller blinds in a Perfect Fit frame, you avoid the problems of free-hanging blinds, which sway in the wind and take up space. Additionally, Pleated Perfect Blinds can be a budget option instead of our more popular fabrics; though they don’t offer all the benefits. Moreover, as Perfect Fit blinds are only available for UPVC, those with timber or aluminium window framework must look for an alternative solution. And we are happy to help!

Whether you are looking for a drill-free solution due to the risk of rust or simply ease, then rest assured you have other options from Specialist Blinds. Generally, we would recommend the Tru-Fit blind system as this option as this drill-free option will also not interfere with the operation of the doors.

Our range of Duette® Pleated Blinds, pure™ pleated Blinds, Pinoleum Blinds, and neat Roller Blinds are also applicable to all frame types. In addition to reduced glare and privacy, our Duette® blinds also offer temperature control with our unique cellular honeycomb construction. This unique structure means there are no cording holes as the fabric has wires hidden within it.

In conclusion, Perfect-fit may not be the perfect fit for you. Unless you are looking for a rectangular or square-shaped side-window blind and are willing to cover part of your window.

How to Fit Conservatory Blinds

How to fit conservatory blinds to plastic and PVC windows without drilling or screwing. In the DIY guide we give you a run down on the different types of blinds that are available for uPVC plastic conservatories and windows including venetian blinds, vertical blinds, roller blinds and roman blinds. You will also learn about the revolutionary Perfect Fit blinds that require no drilling or screwing and can be installed in minutes. We also tell you how to fit conservatory blinds when you need to fix to a solid surface and also all about fixing conservatory blinds to UPVC shells.

Fixing conservatory blinds, or fixing blinds to PVCu or plastic windows is a hugely popular topic on DIY Doctor. We have answered the question so many times on how to fix the brackets for window blinds to double glazed window that it really is time to produce a project containing the answer.

Venetian blinds installed in a conservatory area

If you are wanting to add blinds to your conservatory there are really two different routes you can go down:

  • Installed by a specialist: Normally this will start with you contacting a specialist blind fitting company. They will then send out one of their reps to discuss colours, styles and measure up. Once this has been done they will either manufacture the blinds for you or create some to the correct sizes. A member of their installation team is then dispatched on an agreed date to fit them. This may be the ideal choice for some but it costs!
  • DIY with a kit aka Self Measure and Install: This is the ideal choice for the avid DIY’er. You will measure up the sizes of the blinds you require, purchase the blinds themselves and cut them to size if needed. Once prepared you will then install them yourself. Most DIY kits will come with all the fittings required and if you take your time you can get as good a finish as any professional

For the purposes of this project we will be looking at DIY conservatory blind kits as when it comes to manufacturer installed conservatory blinds and those installed by a specialist blind fitter they will have their own installation methods.

Am I Allowed to Drill into my PVC Window Frames?

This is also quite a common question we get asked. Some window installation and conservatory construction companies will issue you with a guarantee for your windows or conservatory once fitting or construction is completed.

The answer to this question will very much depend on who constructed your conservatory, the terms listed in your contract (if you have one), the guarantees that you have and if they are a member of FENSA (Fenestration Self-Assessment scheme set up by the Glass and Glazing Federation and backed by the government).

On the whole this is quite a “shady” area and due to the levels of competition in the replacement window market on the whole, some companies have been known to offer guarantees and warranties that, shall we say, are rather unrealistic just to get the sales in.

Can you think of any other industry that offers up to 10 years as a warranty? We certainly can’t! When thinking along these lines it all starts to sound a bit unrealistic.

If you read through the small print of your contract you will probably find that the item with the longest cover-term are the pvc shells themselves and the terms will probably only cover discolouration or manufacturing defects.

In light of this you can imagine that in the event of a claim your pvc units will be examined in fine detail and if it is found that they have been drilled this may be used as an ideal excuse to wiggle out of any payments.

Another fact is that due to the competition in this market and the money involved, the chances are that a given window or conservatory company won’t even be around in 10 years time to honour any warranties!

This is not to say that you are not allowed point-blank to fix to your shell units. Just contact the company that fitted your windows or built your conservatory and even any insurance companies that are involved (insurance backed guarantees) and ask them to clarify whether you can. Then get this in writing from all parties involved!

Further help and advice, if you need it, can be obtained by contacting FENSA. Visit their website on the above link.

The ideal alternative to drilling your shell units is to use Perfect Fit blinds, more about this is mentioned later in this project.

How to Measure Conservatory Windows for Blinds

The next potential problem is measuring for your blinds. As we have mentioned, if an engineer or fitter comes out to your home it costs money.

Regardless of any “Free Measuring” offers, this engineer has to be paid for and his or her wages are built into the cost of your blinds.

If you are going for “made to measure” blinds and you are supplying the measurements then make sure they are accurate. Any errors in dimensions you supply to the manufacture will be down to you. Check with your supplier exactly what you need to measure.

The measurements you take will depend on how much of each window or dorr pane or indeed wall you want each blind to cover. When viewing the images below, the inside recess area will be taken from the edges of each bead across the width and height (or drop).

In most cases the outside recess will cover a “wall” or pvc shell unit containing 3 or maybe 4 panes of glass.

If you want the blind to cover just the window pane or glass itself, measure the inside recess in 3 positions – top, middle and bottom for the height (or drop as it’s known) and the left, middle and right on the width. This is wall to wall, or bead to bead (if dealing with single panes) – write down the dimensions on a piece of paper and take the smallest measurement for both width and drop as the ones to use.

Measuring the inside recess for individual PVCU units with a surrounding wall

If you want the blind to cover the entire window or door, measure the outside recess. This is essentially the inside recess measurements with around 12 – 14cms added to each dimension as this will give you 6 – 7cms either side of the blind. Again, measure in 3 positions across both width and height (drop) – write down the dimensions on a piece of paper.

Measuring the outside recess for individual PVCU units with a surrounding wall

Depending on how your conservatory has been constructed you may find that each unit is butted up to each other with no wall space in-between, this is pretty much how most conservatories are constructed, by fixing UPVC units together.

Some conservatories are constructed from brick and block and in this case you will probably have a traditional recess area.

When dealing with just UPVC units the recess area is basically the surrounding shell outside of the glass area and, as mentioned, the inside recess is just the glass area measured from bead to bead.

Measuring inside and outside recess where PVCU units are butted together with no surrounding wall space

If you are going for roller blinds you will also have to factor in the width of the roller mechanism and the brackets which will be 38 – 40mm wider than the actual material of the bind. This is not necessarily too important when mounting outside the recess but certainly comes into play when mounting inside a recess.

Types of Conservatory Blinds

There are quite a few different types and styles of conservatory blind available and their fixing and installation can vary slightly depending on manufacturer but in essence the principles of installation are pretty similar when it comes to DIY kits.

There are also numerous different types of conservatory ranging from the Lean-To type to Elizabethan and Victorian styles and each manufacturer may also have a slightly different take on each style but in essence a conservatory is a conservatory and they are all constructed from similar materials and erected in the same manner.

To these ends, most conservatory blinds are based on size and the area of glass they need to cover. Some will span an entire “wall area” whereas the more modern types are made to cover individual panes of glass so that you have the choice as to which panes are covered and which aren’t. In respect to this pretty much all styles and types of blind are universal and can be installed in pretty much any conservatory.

It’s also a good point to note that blinds are also available for the roof windows and not just the walls!

The main styles of conservatory blind can be summarised as follows:

Venetian Conservatory Blinds

There are several types materials used in the construction of these sorts of blind, typical aluminium, wood and pvc.

Due to the nature of a conservatory it is subject to vast changes in temperature and pvc and wood are not suitable. Pvc are often prone to melting whereas wooden blinds simply cannot cope with the rapid temperature changes. In respect to this, aluminium is the way to go.

Overall they are a great choice, they can provide good levels of privacy even when open and still allow a decent view outwards, they are able to create a great light balance, do not discolour due to sun exposure and offer reasonable levels of heat retention. They are also very reasonably priced.

Venetian conservatory blind

Vertical Conservatory Blinds

A very common choice when it comes to conservatory blinds! They offer a great range of lighting options due to the numerous combinations of draw strings and controls that also provide great levels of privacy.

One drawback is that because of their material construction, they are quite prone to fading over time due to sun exposure but a plus here is that you can purchase replacement verticals very cheaply!

Vertical conservatory blind

Roller Conservatory Blinds

These are also quite a popular choice. They can be installed in several different ways, either one blind spanning a wall or several windows or one blind per pane section with the latter option giving you much more control over light.

They are also quite light in weight so they won’t put too much strain on the fixings or on the pvc itself.

The one major drawback is, similar to the above, they will be prone to fading, but as you will probably only have them part way down or even retracted during summer months, they will fade unevenly and look quite unsightly. Additionally they also attract insects and if you have ever rolled up a fly in a roller blind you will be well aware of the mess they make!

Roman Conservatory Blinds

These blinds tend to be quite expensive, especially when they are made to your specific measurements. However, it is possible for you to buy the “header” section that includes the controls so that you can make your own.

Again as with the other choices there are drawbacks – When retracted they still have quite a presence over a pane of glass so vision is restricted somewhat and due to this they will be prone to fading over large areas.

If purchased with a blackout lining they will also be very heavy, putting a lot of strain on fixings and also the areas of the pvc frame they are screwed into.

Perfect Fit Conservatory Blinds

At DIY Doctor we are always on the lookout for great products and great ideas that make DIY and home improvement fun and enjoyable and when we came across the Perfect Fit blind we were very impressed.

This is possibly the best way we have seen of fitting blinds to plastic frames without the need for the traditional drilling or screwing of the frames themselves avoiding all the hassle of trying to confirm if drilling the frames will invalidate the affore mentioned guarantees etc….

No drilling and no screws

Availabel in a great range of styles and colours, there is pretty much a Perfect Fit blind that will suit all situations and styles.

Fitting the blind when it arrives is literally done in minutes. Using an ordinary credit card as a measure you simply slide special brackets (usually 4) into the existing window beads.

Your new blind clips straight in and its done. No drilling, no screwing, no sticking it really is that easy.

With their Perfect Fit system there are no gaps down the side of the blinds. Strings do not get knotted and pleats do not get tangled together leaving the blind at a ridiculous angle to the window sill. As we said at the top, we have been asked many times for “The easiest way to fit window blinds to PVCu or double glazed frames”. This product is the answer.

How to Fit Conservatory Blinds

Fitting methods may vary depending on the manufacturer of your chosen blind, how your conservatory has been constructed, the type of blind you have chosen and what brackets are supplied with your kit but regardless of this the fitting principles are pretty similar across the board.

The one major point to ensure when you are fitting conservatory blinds and any type of blind for that matter is to ensure that it is fixed straight so that the drop of the blind is totally level.

You will also need to decide whether you are going to face fix (fixed to window frame) or top fix (fixed to lintel) the brackets. This may be dictated to you by the type of blind you have or who manufactured it. Check the instructions included with your kit, they should suggest the best fixing method and also how to assemble your blind.

Fixing Conservatory Blinds to a Solid Surface

If you are top fixing to an inside recess or indeed fixing to an outside recess close to edge of the opening you may need to drill into a lintel. These are very tough to drill so ensure you have a decent drill and some sharp drill bits.

A full breakdown of this process can be found in our fitting Venetian, Roman and Vertical blinds project.

Fixing Conservatory Blinds to UPVC Shells

The idea of drilling into your UPVC frames might sound terrifying but if you take care in doing so there’s nothing to worry about.

The main thing to avoid is the glass itself as if you can imagine. Drilling into this would be a nightmare as it most cases it will crack requiring the entire pane to be replaced, an expensive mistake!

Generally, the glass itself only extends into the frame just past the outside edge of the bead (the black plastic strip running round the outside of the glass). The beading effectively holds the glass in the frame and allows for ease of removing panes if needed.

In the image below you can see a cross section of a upvc unit. Although this is an opening unit (you will be fixing to a fixed unit) their makeup will be similar.

Cross section of UPVC glazed unit – Image courtesy of aspectglassdgu.co.uk

You can see in the image above that we have indicated the location to drill and fix into. By fixing here you will not only be securing your blind through three sections of the unit but also into the metal reinforcing section in the centre of the unit.

With the correct position established for your first bracket, position it on the frame and mark the top fixing hole on the frame with a pen or pencil.

Using a 3mm drill bit, drill directly into the mark you have created on the frame. Don’t push the drill, let the drill itself do the work. Forcing the bit through may cause the frame to crack.

Drilling into a UPVC window unit

Now, work through each of the following steps:

  • Position the bracket back over the hole and insert a screw and screw it up but not all the way
  • Use a spirit level to level up the bracket and ensure that it is dead straight and mark the bottom fixing hole
  • Remove the bracket, drill the second hole and then put the bracket back, inserting and screwing up both screws

A few things to remember – when top fixing:

  • Ensure that the blind will drop far enough away from the window to avoid catching on any handles or catches
  • Ensure that you use the correct sized screws for the hole you have drilled. Trying to force screws that are too big into a drilled hole could cause the frame to crack or split

Now for the bracket on the opposing side:

  • Using a spirit level, place this on top of the bracket you have just fixed and using the second bracket, position this under the level on the other side, wiggling it around until it’s level and in the correct position for drilling and screwing. Mark the top hole on the frame with a pencil or pen.
  • Remove the level and bracket and as above, drill your hole, put the bracket back in position and screw in a screw. Mark the below hole, move the bracket out the way, drill the second hole and position the bracket back, inserting and screwing up both screws.

The final task is to clip your blind in place and open and close it, using all the available controls to check that it operates correctly. If you have more blinds to fit, follow the above steps until all are in place at which point your job is done!

How to install blinds on plastic windows with your own hands

It is not always convenient to use curtains. In some cases, blinds are more practical and more convenient. They make it possible not only to protect yourself from immodest glances in the evenings, but also to regulate the level of illumination during the day by turning the lamellas (plates). We will talk about how to install blinds on plastic windows in this publication.

    There are two types of blinds on windows – vertical and horizontal. Vertical slats are usually made of plastic or special dense fabric, cut into strips 10-15 cm wide. Less common are aluminum slats or synthetic threads.

    Vertical blinds can be used not only for windows, but also for plastic doors with full glazing

    Horizontal blinds slats are plastic, wooden and metal. Regardless of the type and material, they consist of a cornice and lamellas. Eaves – a plastic or aluminum U-shaped section in which the controls are located and to which the lamellas are suspended. Lamellas – horizontal or vertical stripes / plates, which actually close the opening. In order to be able to open and close the blinds, there are controls – chains or threads.

    The design of horizontal blinds includes a large number of threads.

    In horizontal models there is also a control rod associated with a rotary mechanism. By rotating the rod, the angle of inclination of the lamellas is changed. This is how you can change the amount of light and the “transparency” of the window. If the slats are placed vertically (almost), they completely block the view. When horizontal, they almost do not interfere with the review, but there are still a lot of other positions.

    Installation of horizontal and vertical blinds

    When installing blinds, it is necessary to fix the eaves. For fixing it, specially designed brackets are included in the kit. These brackets are attached to the window or wall, and the cornice is simply put on them (until it clicks).

    There are several ways to install blinds on plastic windows:

    You will have to decide on the installation method of the blinds even before purchase: the dimensions of the sheets depend on this. So the type of installation must be selected before measurements.

    Taking measurements

    With the type of blinds (horizontal, vertical) and the method of their installation (on the wall, ceiling, in the window on the sash, in the window opening) you need to decide before buying. And even before the moment you start measuring. Because different installation methods require different sizes. Only with correctly made measurements, it will be easy to install blinds on plastic windows.

    For everything to work well, it is necessary to make measurements correctly

    Another important point: each window must be measured separately . Sometimes it just seems that they are exactly the same. Believe me, there is a difference. And the measurement results must also be recorded and signed, which specific window you measured and which sash it is. Accurate and detailed records will help to avoid confusion during purchase and installation.

    In the window opening

    Although the appearance of the products is different, when measured, there is no difference between the horizontal and vertical models. If you are going to install blinds in a window opening, you need to subtract 2 cm from its width on each side. You can subtract 1-3 cm from the height of the opening. Such gaps are needed so that the canvas hangs freely in the opening and the lower edge of the slats does not rub against the window sill.

    How to measure when installing in a window opening

    Please note that you can install blinds on plastic windows “in the opening” not flush with the edge of the opening, but deeper – near the glass itself or stepping back 5 or more centimeters from the edge. If the opening has a trapezoidal shape, the height/width of the opening will be smaller for the glass, so we take measurements carefully. And yet, in this case, it is better to put marks for installation when measuring. Then you will know exactly where you will need to install the blinds on the plastic windows so that their dimensions fit perfectly.

    Ceiling or wall

    Here the dimensions depend on your wishes. The length of the blinds can be up to the floor or just up to the windowsill. Moreover, depending on the type of installation chosen, the lamellas can cover the window sill or not. So the length is whatever you like.

    This is wall mounting. When mounted on the ceiling, the length will increase, and how much – you choose

    The width of the blinds with this installation method is wider than the window opening. How much wider depends on your desire, but the minimum entry is 5 cm on each side. But if the window is in the same plane with the wall surface, you will need additional brackets that are not included in the package: the lamellas must be placed at least 5 cm from the glass surface so that they do not interfere with opening the sashes for ventilation.

    On sashes

    When installing blinds on a multi-sash window, there are two options – to put one device on each sash or order one long one for the whole window. Usually the first option is chosen – it makes it possible to open and close the sashes with the blinds lowered. If you choose this installation method, you will need to measure each sash and record the results. Sash can be different, so be careful.

    The option on the right is more comfortable

    The width of the blinds when installed on the sashes is taken 3 cm wider than the glass. When hanging, the lamellas overlap by 1.5 cm on the profile. It is convenient and does not interfere with opening / closing windows. The length depends on the location of the fastener, but usually it is 5 cm longer than the height of the glass.

    We would like to draw your attention once again: we measure every sash!

    How to install blinds on plastic windows: fasten to the wall or window opening

    First of all, you need to mark. We install brackets in the eaves. We place them on the right and left so that they do not interfere with the operation of the blinds. The installation height depends on the selected product length.

    We apply the curtains, mark with a pencil on the wall the places for the installation of fasteners in the brackets. If we mount horizontal blinds (they are light and create almost no load), it is enough to put one self-tapping screw / dowel. Vertical ones are heavier, so you need to install all the fasteners from the kit.

    Installation of blinds on the ceiling and walls is the same. Only the mounting location of the bracket

    changes. There is a second way. At the selected level, use the building level to draw a horizontal line, try to avoid tilting – this will affect the blinds (skew). Attach the bottom of the bracket to this line, use a pencil to mark the holes through the holes for drilling. If the length of the cornice is more than 2 m, an additional bracket is required to increase the rigidity of the structure, which is attached in the middle.

    This is how vertical blinds installed in the window opening look like

    When attaching to brick or concrete, we drill holes in the wall or ceiling at the marked points. Drill or hammer – who has what is available. The diameter of the drill depends on the size of the dowels. They usually come with a kit, but you can put your own.

    We insert expansion dowels into the prepared holes, carefully hammer them in with a hammer. We put the brackets, fasten them with screws or nails (if using a dowel-nails). We install the eaves on the brackets, insert the plugs on the sides. For horizontal blinds, attach a rod (handle) to control the swivel mechanism. To do this, install a special hook (included) directly into the mechanism itself, attach the tip of the rod to this hook.

    Installing horizontal blinds on PVC window sashes

    With this installation method, the blinds are fixed with small self-tapping screws (included) in the window profile. Install them so that they do not interfere with the handle to turn. Be careful: if you drill too close to the glazing bead, you can damage the glass unit. Therefore, in this case, correct measurements are very important.

    Installation of blinds on a PVC window

    Installation step by step

    The procedure is as follows:

    • We install the fasteners on the eaves in such a way that they do not interfere with the moving parts inside.
    • Trying on the product on the frame. We expose it so that the lamellas go on the drain frame and on the right at the same distance.
    • We mark with a pencil or marker the place where the fasteners should be located. During this operation, it is necessary to keep the cornice as even as possible. You can navigate along the contours of the window frame or use the level.
    • Although the plastic is quite soft and you can immediately screw the screws into it so that the frame does not crack, it is better to pre-drill the holes. The diameter of the drill is slightly smaller than the diameter of the screws. Usually, self-tapping screws with a diameter of 3 mm are included, so the drill must be taken for 2 mm or 2.5 mm.
    • We take the brackets, fasten them with self-tapping screws to the frame.

      Screw in screws

    • Insert the blinds by pushing until it clicks.
    • We close the ends with the plugs that come with the kit.

    Having to drill holes in a window frame can be intimidating, but it’s okay. In case of incorrectly made holes, unsuccessful ones can be filled with sealant. White silicone, not acrylic (acrylic quickly turns yellow). The characteristics of the windows will not be affected. What can be dangerous is getting into a double-glazed window. Then it might crack. But this is not fatal – it can be replaced, although it will not be cheap.

    Installing the lower clamps

    But that’s not all. To finally install horizontal blinds on plastic windows, you need to drill a couple more holes – under the latches (also called anti-wind). These are additional fasteners at the bottom of the opening sash of the window. The lower edge of the blinds is tucked into them. They do this so that when airing the blinds do not hang down, do not dangle from the wind and do not knock down objects on the windowsill.

    They don’t dangle…

    We put the clamps like this: we try them on, pulling the blinds down a little, mark the places of fasteners, drill holes, install them. We fill the lower bar into the installed clamps. Now, even with a draft or an open sash, the blinds will not hang out. The only thing to watch out for during installation is not to get into the glazing bead (this is a long bar that runs along the double-glazed window and holds it). It is necessary to drill a hole in the frame itself, stepping back at least 1 cm from the edge. Otherwise, there are no problems.

    Without drilling

    There is also a way to install blinds on plastic windows without drilling the frame. This method is available only for those blinds that are hung on opening sashes. In this case, they are simply hung on plastic mounts / brackets that are put on the frame from above. To prevent them from moving, a strip of double-sided tape is attached to the back of the bracket. After removing the protective film, it can be glued (but you can not fix it).

    The shape of the plastic fasteners depends on the type of cornice. So you need to select for each specially

    These L-shaped plastic brackets are not included, but can be purchased from a store or company that sells horizontal blinds. This method is convenient by simply dismantling the blinds, which is convenient if they need to be repaired or washed.

    Vertical Blind Assembly

    Vertical Blinds are installed exactly as described above. The difference is that the slats are installed after the eaves are fixed (the guide along which the runners move). For convenience, before attaching the slats, you can turn the sliders with an adjustment cord so that the slots in them are perpendicular to the eaves. Next, simply snap the lamellas into the sliders, inserting the strip until it clicks. So, in turn we fix all the lamellas.

    Fastening plastic vertical slats

    If the slats are made of fabric, then after installing them, do not forget to insert the lower weight. Next, we attach the lower connecting chain to the lamellas.

    How to assemble the vertical blinds

    Installation of the vertical blinds is complete.

    Today, the Eyes are gained in a particular popularity – they are established in particular popularity homes as well as in offices. Most often, installation of systems is carried out by specialists, but installing blinds on a plastic window with your own hands is also quite possible and does not even require any special skills or tools. You can install these curtains in several ways, the choice of which depends on the interior and functionality.

    Varieties

    Today there are several varieties of blinds in the range of hardware stores. Depending on the specific type, the features of attaching curtains change.

    Horizontal blinds

    Several types of horizontal blinds can be found on sale at once. The lamellas in them are installed horizontally, which is the reason for the name of the design. The thickness, width and type of material can be arbitrary. The structure can be attached inside the frame, to the frame itself, to the slope or over the window block .

    Horizontal blinds are most often installed in institutions

    Install similar blinds in offices, production facilities and other places. These designs are universal – if desired, you can find horizontal blinds of almost any color and shade.

    Vertical Blinds

    Due to their design, vertical blinds are most often fitted over windows . The slats in this case are oriented vertically, made of plastic or fabric. There are varieties on the market that differ in the length of the lamellas.

    Vertical blinds are mainly installed in residential areas.

    This model is most often installed in private homes, but they are also in demand in offices. Installation of vertical blinds is carried out on self-tapping screws . As an alternative, ceiling mounting is practiced.

    Roller blinds

    Roller blinds are made of fabric, completely cover the glass, if desired, they can be rolled up. Installation is carried out using brackets, self-tapping screws or adhesive tape.

    Roller blinds can be installed without drilling walls and shutters – using double-sided adhesive tape

    The need for drilling varies depending on the type:

    1. Vertical structures are mounted above the window or under the ceiling. In both cases, you will have to drill the surface.
    2. Horizontal blinds can be attached to the top slope or window sashes. Without drilling, such structures can be mounted on the sashes of the window unit.
    3. Interframe analogue, as you might guess from the name, is designed to be installed inside the window itself. This option requires drilling the largest number of holes.

    Preparation and measurement

    The following tool is required to mount the blinds:

    • screwdriver or screwdriver;
    • pencil or marker;
    • roulette.

    To ensure that all efforts are not wasted, it is important to correctly and accurately measure – only then the design will work effectively. In addition, it must be absolutely symmetrical to the double-glazed window. Blinds attached with adhesive tape are more tolerant of errors – if desired, they can be corrected. For analogs with fastening on self-tapping screws, it will be necessary to make additional holes, which is unlikely to benefit the beauty of the window, flaws are unacceptable here.

    At the first stage of installation of the blinds, measure the width and height of the window

    For proper positioning of the structure relative to the window and the floor level, the following parameters will need to be measured:

    • dimensions of the window opening;
    • length to the bottom edge of the curtain;
    • distance between fasteners.

    For horizontal blinds mounted on sashes, you will need to additionally measure the dimensions of each glass. To the results obtained, add 2 cm to the upper and lower edges and 0.5 cm to the sides .

    Installing vertical blinds

    Installing vertical blinds is actually not as difficult as it might seem at first glance, and anyone can handle this task. If the length of the curtain is small, then the installation is carried out inside the window opening. Otherwise, the structure is installed under the ceiling or on the wall.

    The algorithm of actions here is as follows:

    1. Markup . The first step is to calculate the center point of the window – it should be on the same level with the center of the eaves. To avoid errors, marks should be made along the edges of the structure. Places for self-tapping screws should be marked on both sides approximately 0.5-0.6 cm closer to the center of the window.
    2. Estimated by level . In the process, it is necessary to ensure that the lamellas are located vertically. The lower part should be 1-2 cm from the floor. A similar distance should be maintained to the window sill if installed directly into the opening.
    3. Bracket Mount . Holes for dowels should be prepared in advance, so all that remains is to install them. The bracket is attached with self-tapping screws. Subsequently, to disguise these elements, you can install complete clips. When drilling the wall, be very careful, otherwise you can chip off part of the wall.

      Vertical blinds fixed with self-tapping screws to the wall or ceiling

    Mounting chain and slats. After attaching the cornice, there will be very little left – hang the slats, start the runners, and also attach the control chain. An important point: the slats must be hung in the same order in which they are in the box. Otherwise, you can spoil the whole picture (if any) .

    Installation of horizontal blinds

    Mounting horizontal blinds on plastic windows is somewhat more complicated. The main thing is to clearly follow the instructions:

    1. The first step is to attach the top fasteners. This is done with a screwdriver. First, holes are prepared, after which the bracket is attached with screws.
    2. We hang the cornice. It should be fastened until it clicks.
    3. The holes for the lower fasteners are drilled by hand. When choosing a diameter, one should take into account the dimensions of the thread retainer connecting the lamellae. Most often, horizontal blinds require additional openings on the sides. This helps to insert the latch connected to the lamella web into the corners.

    When installing horizontal blinds yourself, carefully follow the instructions

    Important: self-assembly must be done with the utmost care. Very often, the slightest mistake turns into the fact that the whole structure does not function correctly .

    Roller blinds

    Roller blinds have several mounting options, so choose the one that suits you first. The first is mounting on self-tapping screws, which in essence is no different from the option described above, the second is on a special adhesive tape, which is used instead of self-tapping screws, and in the third, the roller blind is hung on the sash.

    Brackets or adhesive tape are used to fix roller blinds

    Important: do not forget about degreasing the plastic – it will help to significantly improve the adhesion of materials.

    Curtains between frames

    Curtains between frames are used only for double frames. The installation of this type of blinds is somewhat more complicated than the previous ones, and the process itself will result in an inevitable violation of the integrity of the profile: you will have to drill at least two holes through which the handle and cord to control the system will be pulled out.

    Curtains themselves are mounted in the inner sash, more precisely – in its upper part, and the bracket – directly to the upper profile. Installation of the structure is in many ways similar to working with horizontal blinds.

    Interframe curtains are installed in double-glazed windows

    Do-it-yourself installation of the system is carried out according to the following algorithm:

    1. The window frame is untwisted, and the blinds are applied to the inner sash. This is used to check if the dimensions match.
    2. Markings are made for fastening, as well as points for the output of the cord and control knob, after which holes with a diameter of about 5 mm are drilled.
    3. Brackets are inserted into the calipers, cords and control knobs are brought out, with the cord through the bottom hole.
    4. Interframe blinds are attached to the sash with special interframe brackets.
    5. An adapter is installed on the frame, and a control handle is connected to the flexible output.
    6. Installs the handle and cord retainer.
    7. Frame rolls back.

    The blinds control element is brought out through the frame

    As you can see, the technology of installing blinds on plastic windows without drilling is absolutely not suitable here. The principle itself resembles the installation of all other design options, with the only difference being that you have to disassemble the frame, screw the bracket into the space between the frames, and bring the controls through the drilled holes .

    Useful tips

    In order for the blinds to serve for many years, you should follow some operating rules:

    1. When buying, you should carefully check the complete set and all equipment, especially fasteners. They must be of high quality.
    2. The adjustment mechanism should be chosen wisely – it should be on the side that is convenient for operation.
    3. Ensure that no one opens the windows when the blinds have not yet been fully closed.
    4. The rotary knob must not interfere with or touch other fittings.
    5. Do not forget about periodic maintenance.
    6. Installing blinds on windows is quite possible and do it yourself, but it is better to entrust its repair to a professional.
    7. Plastic structures are preferable: they are much easier to care for.
    8. Do not clean the system too often, this will only lead to rapid wear of the protective layer.

    Do-it-yourself installation of the device, as you can see, is a very simple matter, whether it is metal, plastic or wooden blinds on plastic windows. The main thing is to have high-quality instructions at hand. Thanks to this material, you can hang the blinds as quickly and efficiently as possible.

    How blinds are attached to plastic windows: do-it-yourself installation features

    Blinds have recently gained extraordinary popularity not only in offices, they are also happy to be placed in residential premises. Mounting blinds on windows – perfectly protects from direct sunlight, without interfering with airing and opening windows at all.

    Manufacturers offer several types of blinds

    • Vertical;
    • Horizontal;
    • Accordion or pleated;
    • Roll-up type.

    Vertical blinds have the form of vertical slats (strips) connected to each other, which move around their axis with the help of a plastic chain. Also, they can be moved left or right.

    Horizontal blinds work in the same way as vertical blinds. Only folding occurs from the bottom up.

    Pleated – they look like an accordion, for this they are impregnated with special means so that they keep their corrugated shape. They can be fixed both on a plastic window and on a window opening.

    Roller blinds – have the form of a continuous sheet that can be rolled up, while opening or closing part or all of the window.

    Lamella according to their materials can be:

    • metal;
    • wooden;
    • bamboo;
    • plastic;
    • made of fabric.

    Which blinds are the best option for a balcony?

    Before you start placing blinds on plastic windows, you should understand whether they are needed at all. Will they become a hindrance when closing or opening a window.

    One thing can be said for sure – if a loggia or a balcony is converted into a separate room, then blinds are a must.

    When choosing blinds, in addition to design and appearance, special attention should be paid to the following points:

    • fastener functionality and practicality;
    • it must be taken into account that not all types of fasteners are suitable for window blocks;
    • blinds practicality;
    • it is better to choose plastic or fabric material for a balcony, wood and bamboo can create unnecessary noise.

    What are the best blinds for a balcony?

    For balconies and loggias, plastic blinds are best suited, because:

    • they are easy to clean and wash;
    • do not lose their appearance over time;
    • Sun resistant.

    Before taking measurements, you need to decide where you want to install the blinds:

    • on the window sash itself;
    • on the part of the wall above the window;
    • in the window opening.

    How to take correct measurements?

    If you decide to install blinds yourself, there are a few important things to know. Windows do not always represent a completely even shape, therefore, for measurements it is better to use a steel tape measure and measure everything to the millimeter, in different places of the opening.

    For a certain type of fastening, there are some nuances according to measurements:

    1. , or only to the bottom edge of the window. According to the width of the blinds, it should be installed: 10 cm more than the opening;
    2. When installing blinds on a window sash, you need to measure the distance between two vertical glazing beads (this will be the mount). You also choose the length yourself, and the width should be chosen 3 cm more glass to avoid unnecessary clearance;
    3. Placing blinds in the window opening is considered the most difficult procedure. Parameters are measured: by the width and height of the window, while the height is considered: as the length of the glass with an addition of 1 cm, to close the rubber seals. It is important to consider that when folded, the blinds do not interfere with opening the window.

    Basic Window Mounting Options

    There are two basic methods for installing blinds on plastic windows, with and without a drill. The slats of the blinds are located on the cornice, and how this cornice will be held on the window, in the upper part of the wall or in the window opening depends on the installation method.

    Mounting method with drilling

    Blinds on plastic window sashes – mounted separately for each.

    The cornice is applied to the upper edge of the sash and the points of its fastening are marked. For greater accuracy, at the places of fastening with screws, it is better to drill neat holes in advance. We attach the bracket, screw in the screws and fasten the cornice.

    After you need to fix the fishing line that holds the lamellas. We make small holes directly opposite the exit of the fishing line under the glazing beads at the bottom of the sash. We thread the fishing line into the plugs, and fix the plugs themselves into the holes.

    The drilling method is used by placing cornices on the ceiling or on the wall over the window. To do this, make appropriate holes into which dowels are hammered and brackets are attached with screws.

    Fixing method without drilling

    Holes in window sashes and walls can cause a lot of inconvenience when you decide to remove blinds. Therefore, it is possible to use analog types of mounting bracket on windows:

    • Using double-sided adhesive tape.
    • For the top of the opening sash, when the bottom is fixed with small magnets;

    This method is very easy to use and does not damage the window frame or walls. To remove the blinds, to clean from dust, with such an attachment – will not be difficult.

    Unlike window frames, blinds have a strict geometric shape, the slightest curvature of the fastening will immediately appear on the appearance of the light filter.

    Nuances when attaching different types of blinds:
    • Vertical blinds

    Mounting features of vertical light filters are that they can be mounted on a window opening, wall or ceiling. They are not suitable for mounting on sashes and are attached only by drilling.

    • Horizontal blinds

    The most standard blinds that fit almost any plastic windows. They are considered universal, it is possible to mount them both on each sash and between frames.

    • Roller blinds

    For ease of use, roll-on filters are best placed on window sashes. If they are placed in a window opening or attached to a wall, then it will not be possible to close or open the window with the light filters closed. In addition, roller blinds are very delicate, you need to take special care during installation.

    How to Remove Blinds Properly

    Over time, like everything else in the house, window structures get covered in dust, so the blinds should be removed for cleaning. Each type has its own characteristics when removing.

    Remove the vertical blinds:

    • move the slats to the open state, after which we assemble them;
    • we release the chain from the weights and take out the weights;
    • remove each lamella: lift the slider clip and pull it a little, take out the lamellas one by one.

    Remove the horizontal blinds:

    • remove the cornice from the bracket;
    • we assemble the lamellas at the top and look for the protrusion of the latch;
    • pull the lock towards you and to the right;
    • remove the lamellas.

    Removing roller blinds:

    • there is a tongue on the bracket, it must be bent using a screwdriver;
    • remove the shaft by pulling it towards you.

    Modern window blinds not only protect rooms from sunlight or prying eyes, they are an excellent accessory and emphasize the individuality of the interior.

    Blinds have many advantages. Many highlight the possibility of decorating their interior.

    Advantages and disadvantages for plastic windows

    The use of blinds without drilling on PVC windows has many advantages compared to other installation methods:

    1. Assembly can be done by yourself.
    2. Low cost.
    3. They are very compact, which saves window sill space.
    4. Avoids unsightly holes and does not compromise the structural integrity of the window profile.
    5. Window profile integrity helps maintain window warranties.
    6. The presence of magnetic clamps of the clamping brackets allows you to hold the blinds in an inclined position when ventilating the window and at the same time avoid sagging.
    7. Possibility of attaching to each sash separately.

    Installation of roller blinds without drilling takes a few minutes and does not require special knowledge and skills. Perhaps this is the easiest and most profitable option.

    Curtains can be installed in just a few minutes.

    The main disadvantage of this installation method is that it cannot be used for heavy and massive structures made, for example, from bamboo.

    Types of blinds for plastic window frame, without drilling

    There are the following types of blinds for plastic windows without drilling:

    • vertical;
    • horizontal;
    • rolled.

    Vertical blinds

    Vertical blinds are difficult to install on a window because the slats require a lot of space to rotate. Usually they are located on a special cornice, which is mounted on brackets to the wall.

    Vertical blinds are available in many colors. They are often used in offices.

    Horizontal

    Drilling can be avoided when mounting aluminum horizontal blinds. To do this, you will need special clips attached to the window sash, between which a cable is pulled. Usually clips come with curtains.

    Horizontal blinds can be used in any room.

    Roller blinds

    It is necessary to take into account the fact that roller blinds are a closed type system that has several guides. This version of the blinds is fixed with a special glue or double-sided tape. It is possible to mount on special fasteners that are put on top of the window frame.

    Roller blinds are easy to install.

    Fixing for window sash without drilling

    Before proceeding with the installation of the blinds on adhesive tape, it is necessary to clean and degrease the surface with acetone. It is worth paying attention that the surface on which the fastening is made must be warm. During installation in the cold season, it is necessary to heat the surface of the window frame using a hair dryer.

    Have your blinds installed by an experienced professional.

    Tape Mount

    After that you can stick double-sided tape on the surface of the window profile and attach the blinds. Such fastening will allow you to hold the curtains for several years when using only high-quality adhesive tape. This installation method allows you to mount the blinds both on the sash and on blind windows.

    Mounting blinds with adhesive tape is a less expensive method of installation.

    Roller blinds, horizontal or vertical blinds can be fastened with Velcro, double-sided tape or brackets without using a drill.

    Blinds are necessary to protect the room from direct sunlight.

    Tape attachment is perfect for roller blinds, blinds, pleated blinds and cassette blinds. This method allows you to fix the blind box on the window frame with a special adhesive tape. It works like tape, only much stronger.

    The advantage of installing blinds with adhesive tape is that they take care of the window frame.

    This method of installation is not only simple, but also allows you to maintain the integrity of the window frame, which is important. For example, the owners will want to change the interior and, of course, the blinds – too, while there will be no holes left on the frame. The second option is to rent a rented apartment or room.

    Installing blinds without drilling helps to avoid unwanted holes in the frame.

    This method, without much effort and hassle, will allow you to fix the blinds on another window and for this you just need to change the adhesive tape. Mounting on adhesive tape is so simple that even a woman can handle this task.

    Blinds must be installed according to all the rules, otherwise you risk getting a lot of problems.

    Plastic Bracket Mounting

    Plastic Bracket Mounting is another way to avoid drilling the window. The brackets in this case are not screwed to the window profile, but simply cling to it. A roll of fabric is attached to it. It looks very aesthetic.

    Plastic brackets will also take care of the integrity of your window frame.

    The bracket is very small and almost invisible, but the design is quite strong and reliable. It allows you to keep the blinds as close as possible to the window.

    During installation, it is necessary to take into account the design features, the specifics of the walls in the room.

    This method makes it incredibly easy to clean blinds – just a dream of any housewife. To remove or hang curtains, one easy movement of a hand is enough.

    After you install the blinds in all rooms on a plastic bracket, then you will do this type of work more quickly.

    Mounting blinds with brackets and clips is considered more difficult than duct tape, but it is also quite simple and does not take much time. For this purpose the following clamping brackets are used:

    1. Plastic.
    2. Metal.

    Plastic brackets are cheaper than metal brackets.

    Mounting on plastic brackets is considered the most economical option. It is used mainly for lighter versions of roller blinds, cassette or fabric type.

    Nuances of installation on metal brackets

    The nuances of installation on metal brackets are that they are very noticeable above the eaves of the window system. They are more appropriate for large office spaces. Another disadvantage is the impossibility of installation on blind windows.

    Before deciding how to install blinds, consult with experts

    This option is considered the most expensive. The design is quite firmly attached to the window and does not loosen during operation. Mounting on metal brackets is considered the most reliable and durable enough when used correctly.

    Features of installation of roller blinds and cornices for them

    The stage of installing blinds without drilling begins with the assembly of the curtain structure in order to determine the locations of the fasteners.

    Be smart about installing blinds on your windows.

    Mark the location of the fastener before mounting. To do this, use a building level and a pencil, making notes on the window frame or on the sash, depending on the method and place of attachment. Installation must be carried out on a clean and grease-free surface. She must be warm.

    Follow our roller blind installation tips for a good result.

    Roller blinds are one of the most popular sun protection systems and are very easy to install using adhesive tape and special brackets. The most common system is “Elf” with a shaft diameter of 19mm – open mechanism, free hanging or with lower fixation, carried out using a cable.

    Roller blinds are conveniently mounted on walls, windows or ceilings.

    When mounting this version on the window sash, special elements are attached to the side brackets, which are simply put on from above. The fastener is very convenient and does not interfere with the closing of the valves. The entire fabric roller shutter rests on this design.

    Roller blinds can be attached to the window frame in several ways.

    Side brackets are attached to blind window options using double-sided adhesive tape. The cornice for such curtains is also attached to it without any problems.

    Installation of roller blinds without drilling is quite fast and highly reliable.

    Roman blinds, just like roller blinds, can be fixed with L-brackets or using adhesive tape. Everything will depend on the size of the structure.

    Fig. 1. Installation of blinds.

    The process of attaching blinds (regardless of their type of construction) is, in most cases, not a super complicated operation. As a rule, in the kit of this piece of furniture, in addition to the details of the blinds themselves, there is a detailed step-by-step installation instruction. But installation difficulties may arise for the following reasons:

    • When attaching blinds to walls with screws, holes must be drilled in the wall. This is not a big drawback, but if it is necessary to dismantle the blinds, these holes will have to be sealed (either with mortar or with new wallpaper).
    • The condition of the wall has a direct effect on the complexity of the installation process. In a solid wall, it is extremely difficult to drill the necessary holes for the fasteners. Excessively worn walls are a poor basis for attaching blinds (for example, old shell walls). In this case, it would be preferable to attach the blinds to the window frame.
    • Any violation of the integrity of the window frame structure when drilling holes for fastening the blinds (no matter how well the work was done) leads to a decrease in strength, heat-insulating and tight characteristics. Therefore, in the case of mounting the mounting mechanism on the window profile, it is preferable to use special brackets.

    As you can see, the screw type of fastening blinds to plastic windows has certain disadvantages. But along with them, it has one indisputable advantage: at present, fastening blinds with screws is still one of the most reliable types of fastening. In this case, one significant detail should be noted: the longer the screw, the stronger the fastening will be. Together with sufficient strength and density of the wall structure, the blinds installed on it will function for a very long period of time without sagging.

    Design options

    At present, according to their design features, blinds are divided into the following types:

    • Horizontal window blinds. The main feature that determines the name of this type are horizontal lamellas (strips), assembled into a single canvas using a system of fishing lines.
    • Vertical window blinds. A special feature of this type are long and wide vertical slats. The size of these blinds exceeds the similar size of the structures of the first type.
    • Roller blinds. A solid canvas made of special fabric or bamboo fibers serves as a light filter.
    • Cassette blinds. A “cassette” is a special box into which the blinds are removed when rolled up.

    Horizontal window blinds

    2. Horizontal window blinds.

    Horizontal window blinds, like plastic windows, are available in various sizes. Therefore, in order to simplify the installation process of this design as much as possible, careful measurements of the dimensions of the window (width and height) should be made. It should be noted that in order to maintain convenience during the operation of the window, it is desirable to install small blinds on each double-glazed window, and not use one mechanism that completely covers the window. In the case of using large horizontal blinds that completely cover the window opening, it becomes impossible to open the sash with the slats lowered. Horizontal blinds are attached to the window frame with brackets or, in extreme cases, screws.

    Vertical window blinds

    3. Vertical window blinds.

    Vertical window blinds, due to the large size of the entire structure, cannot be attached to the window profile. Their base (reminiscent of the cornice of classic curtains) is mounted on the section of the wall that is located above the window opening. In this case, it is necessary to use strong screws of the optimal size (too short in this case will not work). Among the shortcomings of vertical window blinds, one can single out the difficult opening of the sashes, which can touch and cause mechanical damage to the lamella system. Among the advantages are ease of maintenance and operation, pleasant external design, a wide range of materials for slats and a bright color palette.

    Window blinds

    4. Roller window blinds with wall mounting.

    Roller blinds for plastic windows are currently one of the simplest types of these interior elements. Small dimensions, light weight and a simplified design scheme allow the use of roller blinds on windows of almost any size.

    Roller blinds (also called “roller blinds”) are made up of the following elements:

    • Cloth made of fabric or bamboo fiber. The fabric during production passes through the treatment with a special impregnation liquid, which increases its dust-repellent properties. This impregnation also prevents the fabric from wrinkling.
    • Control mechanism. It can be a chain or a spring mechanism.
    • Shaft on which the web is wound.
    • Box containing the shaft. There is no box in the open type of roller blinds.

    Cassette window blinds

    5. Horizontal cassette blinds mounted on the sash.

    A special feature of cassette blinds for plastic windows is a special cassette (or box) into which blind slats are assembled when closed. The materials used for their manufacture, in most cases, are plastic and aluminum. Less often – wood and bamboo. Cassette blinds can be combined with almost any style of interior design (you just need to choose a design made from the right material). This type is one of the most suitable for combination with plastic windows (they can be mounted directly on the window profile of each sash). The position of the slats is adjusted using a special chain.

    Ways of fastening blinds to windows

    Window blinds, depending on their type, can be fixed in three different ways:

  • Blind installation without drilling.
  • Installing the window blind fasteners on the wall.
  • Each method of attaching blinds to plastic windows has both undeniable advantages and some disadvantages, which we will discuss in more detail in the following paragraphs of this article. It should be noted that the disadvantages of each of these mounting methods can be reduced to almost a minimum with proper installation (which is desirable to entrust to specialists).

    Blind installation by drilling

    Fig. no. 6. Installation of blinds using drilling.

    As a rule, relatively heavy blinds are fastened with drilling, which cannot be installed using the other two methods. This applies primarily to vertical blinds.

    Installation in this way is carried out according to the following scheme:

    • Careful measurement of the distance between the fastening elements of the blinds is carried out.
    • Dots are marked on the walls or window frame to indicate the location of future openings.
    • Drilling with a drill.
    • Blinds are attached to the wall or window frame with screws and dowels.

    This is a good, reliable method of fastening, with the quality work of which the blinds will function normally for a very long time.

    Blind installation without drilling

    Fig. 7. Installation of a roller blind without drilling.

    As a rule, this installation method applies primarily to roller blinds. Due to the compact size and extremely low weight of the entire structure, there is no need to use screws and drill walls and window frames. The main fastening element in this case is a double-sided adhesive tape, which is located on the back surface of the box (with a closed type of roller blinds), or on a bar behind the shaft (with an open type). For installation, it is necessary to remove the protective film from the double-sided adhesive tape, then firmly press the structure to the window profile.

    Fitting window blinds to the wall

    fig. 8. Installation of window blinds fasteners on the wall.

    The following tools and supplies are required to mount the window blind brackets to the wall:

    • Drill
    • Drill of required diameter
    • Dowels
    • Screws
    • Screwdriver (manual or motorized)
    • Hammer (wooden)

    The first operation, which precedes the installation of window blind fasteners on the wall, is to measure the length of the blind and the distance between the fasteners. Then, with the help of a drill, holes of sufficient depth are drilled, into which whites are carefully hammered with a wooden hammer. Then the fasteners are screwed on.

    Blind fixing features

    Fig. 9. Blinds with fastening to the sash.

    Features of fastening blinds for plastic windows depend, first of all, on the type of their construction. As mentioned earlier, vertical window blinds cannot be attached to a profile. Cassette and roller blinds do not need to be attached to the wall (especially since this may be disadvantageous in terms of their design features). Horizontal blinds can be attached both to the wall (large samples) and to the window profile (for each sash). The latter option provides the opportunity to use the pivoting mechanism of plastic windows without lifting the blinds, so it is more rational to choose it.

    Window blinds

    10. Roller blinds with fastening to the sash.

    Fig. 11. Roller blinds with wall mounting.

    Installing roller blinds is the simplest procedure among all other types of blinds. The small dimensions and light weight of the structure make it possible to dispense with drilling and screws. Roller blinds in most cases are mounted on the window frame, but there are also cases of mounting on the wall. In this case, you should pay attention to its condition. If the wall is plastered, it is necessary to check how firmly it holds. To do this, it is easy enough to knock on the wall. If the sound is deaf, then this indicates a layer of plaster moving away from the wall. Therefore, before installing roller blinds on the wall, all its defects should be eliminated.

    Horizontal window blinds

    12. Horizontal blinds with sash mounting.

    Fig. 13. Horizontal blinds with wall mounting.

    Horizontal window blinds, as already mentioned in the previous paragraphs, can be fixed both to the window profile and to the wall. When mounting on a frame using self-tapping screws, one important feature should be considered. Drilling is unacceptable in cases where it is necessary to preserve the heat-insulating and hermetic characteristics of the profile (this applies to warm aluminum profiles and energy-saving double-glazed windows with an increased heat transfer resistance coefficient). In this case, it is preferable to opt for attaching the horizontal blinds to the window frame using double-sided adhesive tape (the adhesive layer of which must be 1 mm thick).

    Vertical window blinds

    14. Vertical window blinds with wall mounting.

    Fig. 15. Vertical blinds with ceiling mounting.

    Vertical window blinds can be mounted on the wall or on the ceiling. The second option requires a more responsible approach. For him, light vertical blinds are more suitable, the cornice and lamellas of which are made of plastic or fabric. First of all, it is necessary to ensure good adhesion of the dowels and the walls of the holes in the ceiling. To do this, a special adhesive solution can be applied to the dowel, which, after drying, will provide a fairly reliable grip. When attaching vertical blinds to walls, they should be inspected for structural integrity and, if necessary, removed.

    Cassette window blinds

    16. Cassette blinds.

    Before mounting the cassette window blinds, it is necessary to mark on the profile the place where the cassette is attached (the box into which the blinds are assembled when closed). Next, you need to attach the blinds (on the back of the cassette there is a double-sided adhesive tape, from which you must first remove the protective film). Then, if necessary, you can make the final fixing of the cassette on the window profile using self-tapping screws (it is unacceptable if the plastic window profiles are heat-saving – drilling can reduce this characteristic).

    Blind removal

    For the most part, the removal process for plastic window blinds is not relatively strong. The differences mainly relate to the dismantling of those structures, the attachment of which was carried out in different ways (for example, with and without drilling, using double-sided adhesive tape). Otherwise, the process of dismantling blinds for plastic windows is approximately the same and does not require excessively special efforts. We will take a closer look at the process of dismantling each individual type of blinds and some features of this procedure in the following paragraphs of this article.

    Window blinds

    17. Dismantling of roller blinds.

    Before dismantling the roller blind, carry out the following steps:

    • Roll up the curtain.
    • Disconnect the line.
    • Remove the side plugs from the lower rod (which is the weight).
    • Detach the roller with the folded web.
    • Using a screwdriver, if necessary, remove the brackets by unscrewing the screws that attach them to the window frame.

    It should be noted that these operations must be carried out with the utmost care, toads do not damage some fragile elements of the roller blinds structure (line, roller and bracket fasteners, canvas, window profile).

    Horizontal window blinds

    18. Dismantling of horizontal blinds.

    One important detail to note is that it is much easier to dismantle small blinds that cover one window sash than large blinds that cover the entire window opening. In this case, it will be extremely difficult to dismantle it on your own, so the help of another person is needed.

    Horizontal blinds are removed as follows:

    • Detaching the blinds from the brackets holding them.
    • Removing the side covers
    • Removing the slats (be careful not to catch the window handle and cause mechanical damage).
    • Removing the brackets from the window profile or wall using a screwdriver.

    Vertical window blinds

    Fig. 19. Detachment of vertical blinds slats.

    The main feature of dismantling vertical window blinds is to detach the slats from the eaves. Due to their large size and mobility, it is not possible to remove the entire block of lamellas at one time. Therefore, each strip will have to be disconnected in turn. In this case, it is necessary to straighten all the lamellas in such a way that they form an even canvas and face the same direction. Before dismantling the slats, you need to remove the side plug on the eaves, then pull out the weights from the bottom of the blinds, disconnect the chain. And only then you can start removing the lamellas. The cornice is dismantled at the very last turn. And one last reminder: carefully carry the removed slats through the door – they may snag on the door handle.

    Cassette window blinds

    20. The structure and installation stages of cassette blinds.

    Cassette window blinds are dismantled in much the same way as their open type roller blinds. First of all, you need to assemble the blinds into a box. Then the guide strips are disconnected, along which the blinds move. After that, disconnect the cassette from the brackets holding it with a screwdriver (unscrewing should be done strictly one by one to avoid possible mechanical damage to the structure and window profile with a sharp increase in the load on one bracket if all the screws are unscrewed from only one side).

    For easy assembly and dismantling, purchase blinds only from those manufacturers who guarantee the high quality of their products.

    How to determine the dimensions yourself

    Those who decide to install blinds with their own hands need to know that window measurement requires special accuracy. You can get the most accurate result using a steel tape measure. An important condition in the implementation of this process is accuracy down to the millimeter. Not a single window (window opening) has an ideal rectangular shape, so any parameter is measured in several places.

    Before measuring, you need to decide on the installation method, that is, how to fix the blinds on plastic windows:

    • in the opening;
    • on the wall;
    • per sash.

    Measurement rules for each type of fastening

    1. Measurements for fastening blinds in the opening are made according to the width and length of the window opening. Their length is equal to the height of the glass with a margin of 1 cm and taking into account the sealing gum. To determine the width of the blinds, the width of one sealing gum is added to the width of the window glass. It is necessary to provide that the eaves of the blinds do not rest against hinges and slopes. The length of the blind chain should be 2/3 of the height of the window. The chain is usually located on the side of the loops. It is also necessary to take into account that, when assembled, the blinds do not interfere with the opening of the window.
    2. When fixing the blinds to the wall , the height is determined independently. They can completely close the window opening or be slightly higher than the window sill. Their width should be 10 cm more than the width of the window opening. In this case, it is also necessary to take into account that the cornice of the blinds will take about 5 cm from above.
    3. When attaching blinds to PVC windows on sash , the distance between two vertical glazing beads is measured. To determine the length of the blinds, the length of the window is measured. If you do not plan to leave a side clearance, then 30 mm must be added to the width of the blinds.

    Tip: If you are afraid of making a mistake in the calculations, seek the help of specialists who will correctly measure the blinds.

    Mounting methods

    Before hanging the blinds, you need to decide whether you need a window sill to accommodate, for example, flowers. Blinds are attached in two ways: without drilling or by drilling. The eaves are a basis of any blinds. It is the cornice that is attached to the ceiling, to the wall, in the window opening or to the sash. Special brackets can serve as a support for the eaves.

    Blinds installation with drilling

    If the curtains are hung on each window sash, then fastening is carried out using self-tapping screws. The upper bar of the blinds is applied to the upper edge of the double-glazed window, where the fastening points are indicated with particular precision. For a more accurate fastener, you can pre-drill small holes. Then the brackets are applied to the marked places under the very top of the double-glazed window frame and securely fastened with self-tapping screws using a screwdriver, after which the blinds are installed on them.

    Next, a fishing line is attached to hold the lamellas. To do this, two holes are made on the frame under the lower glazing beads of each sash. Holes are drilled exactly under the corresponding line outlets located on the upper bar of the blinds. The lower ends of the fishing line threaded into the blinds system are threaded into the plugs. The plugs, in turn, are threaded into the holes made, and the fishing line is pulled.

    This fastening method is used to install roller blinds or horizontal blinds. Vertical blinds are attached to the upper slope of the window, to the wall or to the ceiling, also by drilling. First, holes are drilled in the ceiling or wall with a puncher, where dowels are inserted. The cornice of the blinds is screwed on with screws.

    Installing blinds without drilling

    If later on you have to remove and remove the blinds, the holes will become a big disadvantage of the window appearance. Therefore, in order to install blinds on the window sash, , you can use the brackets , which can be attached to the frame in the following ways:

  • with double-sided tape.
  • Using magnets on the flap (bottom), the blinds are fixed parallel to the window when it is opened.

    These methods are more gentle and safer in terms of damage to the metal-plastic frame. Fastening blinds to windows without drilling is quite reliable. And you can remove them for cleaning, for example, with almost one hand movement.

    All blinds have a regular geometric shape, so the markings for fastening the top bar of the blinds must be made with extreme accuracy. The slightest skew will spoil the overall appearance of the window, as well as hinder the work of the moving mechanisms of light filters.

    Mounting features

    Roller blinds

    Roller blinds are best installed directly on the window sash. This method is associated with ease of installation and subsequent operation. Blinds installed in other ways do not allow the window to be opened when the curtains are closed. Details of roller blinds are made of plastic, so the structures require careful handling during fastening.

    Horizontal

    An important feature of horizontal blinds is the ability to install in in places where the installation and operation of other types of blinds is impossible for a number of reasons. They can completely close the window, or install on each sash, and it is also possible to place horizontal blinds between the frames.

    Vertical

    Blinds of this type are attached in three ways:

    • to the upper slope of the window;
    • on the wall;
    • on the ceiling.

    Mounted with drilling only . Special care must be taken when drilling the slope with a hammer drill, otherwise part of the wall may break off.
