50 Innovative Wallpaper Design Ideas

Studio Q; Joyful Designs Studio

We’ll be the first to admit that installing wallpaper is a huge undertaking. Not only does the process itself require the utmost attention, but it’s also a big commitment. After all, it’s always possible that you’ll tire of your once-desired repeat a few years later. But if you want to breathe some life into your home in a way that a fresh coat of paint can’t capture, wallpaper can be a design investment worth making. So we searched high and low for the best wallpapered rooms around to give you endless inspiration. Though there’s a broad array of patterns—eye-catching florals and standard stripes, to name two—the rooms here prove that there’s more than one way to apply wallpaper. While many designers have covered all four walls in the same print, others have opted for accent walls or patterns in unconventional places. (The ceiling and the bathroom are just two of our favorites.) And fear not, commitment-phobes: There are a number of peel-and-stick options out there for you, too. Get ready to step outside of your comfort zone with wallpaper that can give your space an attractive new look.

Conner Nielander for Flat Vernacular

Modern wallpaper may sound like an oxymoron if you associate wallcoverings with that outdated, stuffy, impossible-to-remove chintz from your great grandmother’s house. But wallpaper, and perhaps the design industry in general, is simultaneously loosening up and embracing nostalgia. Translation: Modern wallpaper is trending (maybe it never even went away), and we’re here for it. As Manhattan designer and wallpaper extraordinaire Danielle Colding tells House Beautiful, “everything that’s old is new again,” and “there are no rules anymore.” Learn how to freshen up any old wallpaper with some clever styling tips and get inspired by gorgeous rooms that revolve around modern wallpaper with the twenty examples below.

1

Pick a Repeating Motif

PHOTO: Alexandra Rowley; DESIGN: Studio DB

Paired with traditional cotton bedding and an ultra-modern silver mushroom lamp, this trippy, kaleidoscopic wallpaper in a Studio DB-designed bedroom is a stunning and innovative backdrop. The wallpaper, Nimbo in Noctilucent by Flat Vernacular, was inspired by something as eternal as clouds moving across the sky, yet it feels decidedly modern.

Check out Flat Vernacular to shop for well-made, unique, and modern wallpaper prints.

2

Get Bold and Graphic

Studio Razavi

When you want a wallpaper that’s 100% modern, a graphic print is your best bet. The linear lines and perceived three dimensional effect make it look like its from the future (or at least inspired by some kind of digitized blue print). Case in point? This space designed by Studio Razavi Architecture, which features a mesmerizing wallpaper with a cubic print that draws upon the the shapes of the herringbone floors and painted wall in the dining room.

Check out Etsy to shop for one-of-a-kind modern wallpaper prints.

3

Capture a Mood With Ombré

PHOTO: Nicole Franzen; DESIGN: Space Exploration

Designed by Space Exploration Design, this bathroom is a serious mood. The ombré design of the wallpaper from Calico’s Aurora collection is inspired by twilight skies. Paired with a moody marble vanity, rose cold fittings and modern light fixture, and a frameless mirror, it captures that beautiful, hard-to-pin-down, in-between moment of dusk when the light begins to fade.

Check out Calico Wallpaper for abstract and artful wallpaper prints.

4

Spotlight a Cheeky Print

Grey Crawford

You can always count on Fornasetti for a fun, cheeky wallpaper print. This one (Tema e Variazioni ) is both a classic and a youthful statement, thanks to the bright minty green hue with that iconic portrait. It livens up the small dining space designed by Jeff Andrews, even though the Craftsmen-style architecture isn’t particularly modern.

Check out Fornasetti to shop for whimsical, personality-packed wallpaper prints.

5

Try the Tonal Trend

Conner Nielander for Flat Vernacular

Two words: Tonal perfection. How could you not want to crawl right into this fluffy pink cloud dream of a bed? The abstract rose quartz wallpaper by Flat Vernacular sets the scene for a heavenly atmosphere, dancing and interacting with the light. And while it isn’t necessarily that rigid, austere beauty of modern interiors, the tonal approach is definitely on-trend. We also love the Art Deco-inspired bed frame for a retro accent.

Check out Flat Vernacular to shop for cutting-edge, modern wallpaper prints.

6

Display It as Artwork

2LG Studio

You don’t need to cover the entire wall to make a statement. In fact, framing your favorite wallpaper print can be a more affordable and less labor-intensive optoin. In this living room, 2LG Studio framed a panel of Calico Wallpaper’s Bone collection in Wabi, which “speaks to time immemorial” (and just adds a fun splash of gold).

Check out Calico Wallpaper for gorgeous abstract wallpaper prints.

7

Focus On Modern Accents

Studio DB

While the wallpaper itself is pretty neutral in this bathroom designed by Studio DB, the modern mirror above the sink as well as the contemporary blush pink bulb make it feel like the perfect blend between elegant and on-trend. If you’re drawn to this vignette, consider an understated yet slightly whimsical print with sophisticated materials like marble in more permanent features (like the counters) and then add modern accents.

Check out Cole & Son’s to shop for timeless and on-trend wallpaper prints.

8

Make a Statement With Large-Scale Prints

Regan Baker Design

With a super large-scale print that looks more like a work of art than your everyday wallpaper, this dining room designed by Regan Baker Design is a force to be reckoned with. Because the olive and forest greens as well as the swirls of gold assert an intensity, Baker chose to more casual furniture to ground the space as family-friendly and approachable.

Check out Kelly Wearstler to shop for designer-approved wallpaper prints.

9

Be Matchy-Matchy

Francesco Lagnese

The graphic navy wallpaper and matching upholstered headboard along with the chrome table lamp assert a modern sensibility to the antique pieces throughout the dapper bedroom designed by Nick Olsen. If you’re wondering how to mix in old family heirlooms or flea market finds, take note.

Check out Chasing Paper for fun, affordable, and temporary wallpaper prints.

10

Freshen Up Original Features

2LG Studio

Here’s proof that original elements can age well given the right design treatment. As the designers from 2LG Studio describe, “this house already had charm and great bones, with period features including the stunning original tiles in the entrance hall.” They achieved that super lived-in vibe by keeping the original colorful tiles but then added a cloud-print, pale mint-hued wallpaper that brings the whole space up to speed.

Check out Osborne & Little for a range of fun and classic wallpaper prints.

11

Pair Classic Prints With Modern Furniture

Studio DB

Hello, mural wallpaper of our dreams. It doesn’t get more elegant than a de Gournay wallpaper. But there are also tons of ways to make it feel new again, as done fabulously in this dining room designed by Studio DB. The chairs from The Socialite Family are a modern interpretation of a retro design as is the light fixture from Ladies and Gentlemen Studio. The blooms also look like they’re blossoming out of the paper itself.

Check out de Gournay to shop for high-quality, masterful wallpaper murals.

12

Make What’s Old New Again

Emily Henderson

This bedroom designed by Emily Henderson is a great example of how to make something as timeless as toile feel contemporary. Paired with midcentury-inspired accents, modern artwork, and simple blue bedding, it’s a great mix of eras and trends to create something totally unique. A black and white toile like this one is a great way to incorporates florals without going overboard.

Check out Pierre Frey to shop for classic French wallpaper prints.

13

Make Traditional Art Feel Fresh

Tim Street-Porter

Interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard was tasked with giving the 1820s Victorian in Rhode Island a “mad old aunt” aesthetic with a modern twist. The hand-painted, agate-like wallcovering by Robert Crowder & Co brings dimension and life to the hallway, and even makes the pair of 19th-century lithographs of etchings by Giovanni Battista Piranesi look cool and edgy.

Check out Schumacher to shop for a wide variety of high-end wallpaper prints.

14

Dress Up Your Corners

Catherine Kwong Design

This Catherine Kwong-designed space proves that monochrome interiors have endless potential. With a painterly-inspired black and white wallpaper, this awkward corner is transformed into a comfortable and stylish reading nook.

Check out Voutsa to shop for hand-painted, cutting edge wallpaper prints.

15

Cover Every Nook and Cranny

2LG Studio

According to 2LG Studio, the former owners of this house had covered all the walls in pink. Using that as inspiration, they maintained the light pink theme throughout, covering the walls in a gorgeous geode-meets-brutalism wallpaper. The gorgeous blue carpet is a bold and modern play on classic design motifs. This, along with the baby pink walls, baby blue accent chair, and modern lighting are all it takes to set the tone of the home.

Check out 2LG Studio to shop for designer-backed wallpaper prints.

16

Make Unexpected Design Decisions

Hotel Henrietta

While the palm leaf print wallpaper isn’t necessarily a new trend, there are countless ways to reimagine it. For example, in this bedroom at Hotel Henriette in Paris, the floors are painted black to give the room a more intimate, romantic, and grounded sensibility while the mint green linens introduce a laidback country chic vibe. It’s the perfect blend of breezy island vibes and a moody urban oasis.

Check out Anthropologie to shop for affordable and fresh wallpaper prints.

17

Work With Existing Pieces

2LG Studio

The splatter paint-inspired wallpaper both complements and complicates the classic Mediterranean-style tiles. It, along with the mirror, give this tiny bathroom a 21st century spin. “We wanted to maintain the strong heritage of the architecture, whilst bringing it up to date with our new take,” say the designers of 2LG Studio.

Check out Porter Teleo to shop for artistic and painterly wallpaper prints.

18

Play With Texture and Embrace Quirks

2LG Studio

In this little dining nook designed by 2LG Studio, what could have been an awkward eyesore becomes the striking focal point. That’s thanks to the texture-rich wallpaper, which looks like torn paper up close. Stretching from floor the ceiling, it doubles as artwork.

Check out 2LG Studio to shop for designer-backed wallpaper prints.

19

Rethink Traditional Patterns

Leanne Ford Interiors

Modern, photorealist interpretations of classic designs are popping up everywhere. In this dining room designed by Leanne Ford Interiors, the walls are covered in a contemporized botanical print that gives the romantic, old-school floral look a new spin. But the dining room still feels timeless, thanks to the linen slipcover chairs and reclaimed wood table.

Check out House of Hackney to shop for colorful and interpretations of classic wallpaper prints.

20

Brin the Outdoors in (But Digitize Them)

2LG Studio

Like the space above, a digitalized geometric or nature-inspired pattern can bring so much intrigue to a room that just can’t be executed with paint or artwork. In this bedroom designed by 2LG studio, the wallpaper mimics wood grain swirls for a nature-inspired twist. Think of it as a new way to bring the outdoors in.

Check out Brett Design to shop for gorgeous photo-real wallpaper prints.

Wallpaper ideas: 35 ways to elevate rooms around the home

Wallpaper ideas can elevate rooms around the home. The huge choice of pattern and color means there’s a design to complement every room whatever its style and whatever your taste.

And while you might be looking for decorating ideas using wallpaper for living rooms and bedrooms, be aware that there are many options suitable for kitchens and even bathrooms as technological advances enable them to tolerate humid conditions, so these rooms, too, can be full of decorative interest.

Our ideas will provide the wallpaper inspiration you’re looking for, and we’ve asked the experts to weigh in with their advice, too.

Wallpaper ideas – for every room

These are our favorite wallpaper ideas with the top design strategies and techniques, wallpaper trends, and wallpaper inspiration for every room.

1. Add modernity with a stylized floral wallpaper

‘Entryways can often be overlooked, seen as a space simply to pass through and yet it is the first space you encounter and provides the welcome to your home, so why not embrace color and pattern and bring a sense of warmth and joy?

‘Here the fresh floral Hencroft design, which features a repeating pattern of stylized cowslips, creates a rhythmic motif that can elongate and widen the space by drawing the eye, perfect for those narrower spaces,’ says Ruth Mottershead, creative director at Little Greene .

‘Use contrasting colors in the same print for added design detail and maximum wallpaper magic,’ says Jamie Watkins, co-founder at Divine Savages . ‘Here, Always Sunday founder Lexi Dart has expertly combined our Crane Fonda wallpapers in Soft Copper and Black Gold for an extra divine and savage twist in her bathroom.

‘We love this design trick. It’s at once playful and at the same time sophisticated – a different take on a classic monochrome scheme and rather than using a standard black and white wallpaper, this has a decadent edge to it. Also note the perfect pattern matching on the two halves… it’s these small design details that count.’

3. Elongate and add height with a stripe

‘Never underestimate the power of a good stripe; the linear quality of this design also adds character to this scheme,’ says Jennifer Ebert, deputy editor digital, Homes & Gardens. ‘Note how the alcoves are wallpapered, too – this is an excellent idea that helps this wall to flow perfectly.‘

4. Match your woodwork color to your wallpaper

‘If your chosen wallpaper is “busy”, you can break it up and make it more cohesive by choosing to paint your woodwork in a color that’s within the wallpaper design. Here, this pretty green shade really sets off the overall feel and the plain aspect creates balance,’ says Lucy Searle, global editor in chief, Homes & Gardens.

‘The Sapowaydidi was inspired by an indigenous Kirdi glass beaded modesty apron,’ says Amechi Mandi, founder of London based design brand, Amechi, for Dado . ‘The pattern offers a striking geometric print, featured here in the joyful red and blue colorway. More interesting than a linear stripe, yet offering the same sense of rhythm, the geometric pattern runs horizontally creating the illusion of more space by seemingly stretching the walls allowing more space for color and pattern to sing. ’

6. Go for glamor with a two tone paisley wallpaper

(Image credit: George Spencer Designs )

‘Wallpaper is a great way to make a statement in a bedroom, either on a single feature wall or on all the walls for full-on drama,’ says Tim Walters, managing director, George Spencer Designs . ‘Highly decorative, our Charleston Paisley features a large scale print of a burgeoning hydrangea plant and the Midnight Blush colorway combines a dramatic dark brown with a dusky pink, perfect for creating a glamorous boudoir feel.’

7. Highlight furniture with a textured wallpaper

(Image credit: Murphy Maude Interiors/Lisa Hubbard)

‘Wallpaper has become such a unique way to add a big personality to a smaller vignette, such as an entryway. It allows for a focal point while also integrating additional textures, colors, and patterns into the space,’ says Leslie Murphy, owner and creative director at Murphy Maude Interiors .

8. Make an office unique with wallpaper

‘We absolutely love pattern at Designers Guild and playing with scale, texture, design and your color palette create personality and an individuality in your space,’ says Tricia Guild, OBE, founder and creative director of Designers Guild . ‘This season’s Porcelaine de Chine wallpaper offers just this. Small scale, but full of detailed and intricate paintings of trailing flowers and birds to evoke the magic of fine porcelain, it’s the perfect design to add interest to any space.’

9. Match wallpaper to the sanitary ware

‘There’s a lot going on in this bathroom visually, and the main link is the green tub and basin with the green shade of the stems within the wallpaper,’ says Jennifer Ebert, deputy digital editor, Homes & Gardens. ‘The marble creates extra pattern but the base shade is off white which matches the background of the wallpaper, and these elements are key to link it all together.’

10. Use the same print on your furniture

(Image credit: Harlequin x Diane Hill)

‘We’re all for a spot of cohesion in interior design, so this idea of having an armchair upholstered in the same print as the wallpaper is a winner in our eyes,’ says Andrea Childs, editor, Country Homes & Interiors.Keep it simple with just one piece of furniture and use other tones from the design for your accessories.’

11. Use wallpaper ideas to play with scale

Kitchen wallpaper ideas are officially on trend, with the advances in technology that allow wallpaper to cope with damp conditions. Use it to work with scale to make pattern work on every surface. In this scheme by interior designer Anna Spiro , the same paisley print is used on the walls and the chairs to link the areas.

‘When color and pattern are used well, they give an air of individuality and help create rooms that are full of energy,’ says Anna Spiro.

By opting for a slightly larger scale on the upholstery, the repeat creates extra impact as the shape takes up the majority of the chair backs. With a larger surface area available on the walls, a smaller repeat allows the pattern to be seen in its entirety.

12. Use wallpaper to trick the eye

Small spaces are ideal for bold wallpaper and decorating choices. Strong prints and colors are often more effective in more petite rooms as you don’t tire of them too quickly.

By utilizing a wallpaper with a trompe l’oeil effect, like this Terrarium design from Sanderson , the room can also appear larger than it is. A coordinating paint will double down on the effect. We love the moss-green tongue-and-groove panelling, shown here, painted in Hopper 297 from Little Greene .

13. Create impact with a matched scheme

Turn your cabinets into a style statement with clever use of wallpaper – and fabric.

Take inspiration from this smart project from Barlow and Barlow , where glass-fronted cabinets have been lined with fabric. Not only does this add interest, but by matching the wallpapered headboard space, the bed area appears much bigger and taller than it is as the eye follows the pattern. For a final finishing touch, even the closet handles integrate this pretty material.

‘We love lining closets and particularly open dressing room joinery in fabric to add interest and softness to what can be a large mass of cabinetry,’ says Nicholas Cox of Ham Interiors . We often go for a simple stripe or small scale simple pattern fabric in complementary tones to the rest of the bedroom scheme.’

14. Enhance ceiling heights with vertical stripes

Think outside of the box when considering wallpaper – it can be used to exaggerate ceiling height if hung vertically.

A strip of beautifully patterned paper – Carro Mosaic in Aegean from the Byzantium collection, Schumacher – can be applied to create a border. Here, this works to break up the space between the windows but could equally work to great effect is applied at the ceiling line.

When applying vertically, as here, mirror the line by incorporating linear curtain ties for a satisfyingly symmetrical finish. The blinds are backed and edged in Linara in Stucco from Romo . Blind ties from Houlès .

15. Hang a show-stopping mural

For a dramatic way to maximize your walls, think wall mural ideas. They are right on trend for the year ahead, look stunning, and some panels, such as those by de Gournay , can be removed to take with you when you move house.

When looking to add decorative elements into a room, remember that two is nearly always better than one. This scheme demonstrates how a pretty fringed, block-colored chair adds considerable extra interest when paired with a companion. Dressing each with a close to, but not quite, matching cushion keeps the space energetic. The Madeleine slipper chairs from Neptune are covered in Juno in Dandelion by Linwood and trimmed in Bali jute tassel skirt fringe from Samuel & Sons .

‘Rugs are also a great way of layering pattern and it’s easy to layer up a few smaller rugs and a tip is to have a common color thread in the pattern play to hold your scheme together,’ says Lorna Haigh, creative and marketing director, Alternative Flooring .

16. Create clever contrast with opposing tones

Choosing wallpaper ideas as a contrasting backdrop is a clever way to allow for two stand-out design features to co-exist. Here, the bold orange pattern is the perfect partner for the all blue furniture.

Designed by Beata Heuman , it demonstrates how to use one color across three individual pieces in the room by using varying shades. This adds depth and energy, but has also been cleverly designed to create harmony with each piece speaking to another.

The duck egg of the ottoman is echoed in the cushion on the navy blue chair, which is then itself linked into the sofa with the deep blue trim on the beautiful, scalloped canopy in the same fabric as the mid blue seat beneath. The sofa canopy is, of course, a true statement piece, so the choice to stay restrained in color helps this bold choice feel like the natural one.

‘We were creating a cozy place to watch telly, but we also wanted the scheme to have some theater, and so the idea of the canopy sofa was born,’ says Beata. ‘Being pretty over the top as an idea we kept the colors simple and calming. There is a small yellow contrast braid around the arm, but otherwise it’s all different shades of blue, so it looks quite relaxed all things considered.

17. Play with geometric pattern

‘The easiest way to combine patterns is to work with a number of distinct and very different designs in complementary colors,’ says Sarah MacGregor, Jane Churchill design director.

‘Here three different geometric patterns create a bold scheme. The delicate star shape pattern, in soft pink, on the wall and blind adds a sense of scale, while the upholstery featuring a subtle zig zag design gives texture and the multi-colored cushion a splash of contrast.’

If you are looking for country wallpaper ideas with a contemporary twist like this, the wallpaper above is in Tassi, red/aqua; blind in Tassi, red/aqua; chair in Kip, soft red; cushion in Luna, multi; all Jane Churchill at Colefax and Fowler .

18. Cocoon a space with clever wallpaper ideas

For children’s rooms and guest rooms alike, cabin beds are seeing a surge in popularity.

One trick for making them equally as visually appealing as they are in terms of comfort is to cocoon the space in pattern or color. This Studio Peake design pairs matching fabric and wallpaper on the walls, ceiling, headboard and blinds, a great look for ceiling wallpaper ideas.

‘Pattern matching is always difficult between ceilings and walls so we used a braid to line the edges which means you don’t read if the pattern matching is slightly off,’ says Sarah Peake, founder of Studio Peake. ‘We used the same trick on the edge of the blind by using a green linen contrast border.’

19. Wallpaper a ceiling

Wallpapering the ceiling is an effective way to add drama, and works particularly well in rooms tucked up in the eaves.

‘Don’t just think of wallpaper for your four walls – have fun and think outside the box,’ says Patrick O’Donnell, Brand Ambassador, Farrow & Ball . ‘For a dramatic design statement, apply striped wallpaper to the ceiling as well as the walls. ’

Ceiling ideas don’t just work for airy rooms – see how pairing a decorative botanical print with smart panelling for a considered, crafted look can be successful in the room above. This is the Cote d’Azur wallpaper by Manuel Canovas at Colefax and Fowler.

20. Disguise closets with wallpaper

In a small room, closets can visually block off a lot of space, and make the room feel even smaller. Instead of a large closet being the focus, coat the doors with the same wallpaper as the walls, tricking the eye into making the closet disappear.

Take the time to carefully pattern match so the furniture blends seamlessly with the walls – the larger the repeat the easier this will be to achieve.

This wallpaper is Brocade with woodwork painted in Pointing no.2003, both Farrow & Ball.

Headboard ideas needn’t be anything more than getting creative with offcuts of wallpaper. ‘Don’t waste a scrap – there are many uses you can consider for a half-roll currently lying redundant,’ advises Patrick O’Donnell, Farrow & Ball Brand Ambassador.

‘Use them to create a focal point behind your bed with a decorative faux headboard. Four widths of paper should be all you need for most beds, so get out your pencil and scissors and throw caution to the wind. Inside closets and interior doors is another great place to start your adventure into wallpaper and will add impact to rooms that require more detail.’

22. Use wallpaper to give an entryway instant personality

(Image credit: Future / Davide Lovatti)

The entrance hall is the first moment you have to set the style and tone of your house, so inject some personality into this space.

Hallway wallpaper ideas can be used to great success in areas such as these, creating a bold impression for your guests. It’s not all too often that you will linger in an entryway, excepting extended hellos and goodbyes, meaning you can really go for it with your pattern choices. Or you can keep the hallway plain and calm and experiment with color and pattern in your staircase wallpaper ideas.

Choose a dramatic print that you love but couldn’t live with in somewhere like a living room.

It’s also worth noting that, besides the front door, these spaces are often broken up with windows, mirrors and pictures, so stay away from oversized mural prints and select a smaller repeat so you can see more of the pattern.

23. Turn a powder room into a character-packed space with wallpaper

(Image credit: Future / Davide Lovatti)

If you are wondering how to wallpaper a room, a downstairs cloakroom or toilet is the ideal place to get started and experiment. This is most likely to be used as a guest bathroom, so make your powder room wall decor fun and offer up that ‘wow’ moment.

Find that wallpaper you’ve always loved and go wild with it. As it’s likely to be a small space it’s also not the most expensive area to redecorate if your tastes change.

‘A large scale print works beautifully in smaller rooms and occasional spaces such as bathrooms, where they can allow for bolder choices to be made to create great impact,’ comments Ann Grafton, Creative and Managing Director of GP & J Baker .

24. Use wallpaper ideas to make a mudroom feel loved

On the ground floor of your home you may have several smaller rooms, such as boot rooms, mudrooms and utility rooms. As well as being on the petite side, these areas are often working spaces which don’t tend to see a lot of decorating love. Add some TLC to these spaces through your wallpaper.

In terms of which patterns to look for, Joa Studholme, Color Curator at Farrow & Ball, advises that you should look at using ‘wallpaper which some might feel would overwhelm in a larger space. Patterns like this (Tourbillon by Farrow & Ball) which are bursting with joyful movement feel calmer when the pattern and ground are close in colour and just serve to make the walls feel less flat and hard.’

The other consideration when decorating a mudroom, or any other busy, working area of the home, is how to take care of it.

‘To protect wallpaper from the high traffic it is a good idea to use some panelling on the lower half of the room, which should be painted in the darker tone of the wallpaper,’ suggests Joa.

‘Alternatively, a dado rail can be used, with the wall below it again painted in the darkest tone of the wallpaper in our washable Modern Emulsion. Strongly colored wallpaper used on the interior of cupboards or dressers also adds a fantastic extra element in these spaces and will be more protected.’

25. Use wallpaper ideas to make a snug feel cozy

Whether you have a snug, or are looking for small living room ideas for a more compact or dark space, you can add serious impact with the right choice of wallpaper.

Snugs are, by their definition, where you want to snuggle up and be cozy, so they often have a fireplace or stove and the comfiest of furniture.

To match this feeling with your wallpaper, look to deep, rich colorways and luxe or heritage style patterns, like this Herriot Way wallpaper by Anna French at Thibaut .

26. Pick a bold living room wallpaper

(Image credit: Nina Campbell distributed by Osborne & Little)

‘From entertaining to relaxing, and quite possibly working in, the living room tends to be the most widely used space within the home,’ notes Cole & Son ‘s design director Carley Bean. ‘It’s therefore important to choose a design and color palette that creates an inviting, versatile space.’

When selecting living room wallpaper ideas, it’s important to consider how often you will be in the space. You don’t want a pattern that will overwhelm, or a color that you will get quickly tired of.

However, that’s not to say that pattern is to be steered away from. Choose a medium sized repeat and shades which flow well with the furniture and key pieces in the space, like in this fresh green living room.

27. Pick a wallpaper with a textured look for a cozy living room

Wallpaper can be a great way to add further layering to a room and create cozy living room ideas that feel warm and welcoming.

Here, a wallpaper with a fabric-look creates a feeling of enclosed comfort that complements the fabrics within the upholstery.

28. Use wallpaper to create a calm home office scheme

As more and more of us are working from our houses, home offices are becoming much more prevalent. Whether you have a full-blown study at home or have adapted a nook in another room, there are options for decorating with wallpaper.

Home offices are somewhere where you need to concentrate, so busy, patterned wallpaper will be too distracting. Gentle, impressionist-style coverings will add a zen feeling to the space, while a mural or super-sized repeat will add interest when you glance up, but due to its size won’t be distracting.

29. Match wallpaper with paint finishes to stretch space

(Image credit: Future / Jan Baldwin)

If you don’t want wallpaper right in front of you, a great option (as pictured above) is painting behind the computer and wallpapering the room around you. A gently textured covering like this will add an extra dimension and interest to the room without catching the eye too much when focussing.

On the flip side, if your desk is against a wall in a living room, or even a hallway, wallpaper can be used to zone. Demarcate the area with a few strips of wallpaper and you’ll have created an obvious work space.

In terms of which wallpaper colors to look at when planning your home office ideas, there are a few options. Blue is traditionally associated with home offices as according to color theory it aids in communication and the ability to focus while also lowering blood pressure – ideal for stressful meetings.

Green is another great wallpaper color for home offices as it boosts creativity and is grounding.

30. Give kitchens character with a pretty pattern

(Image credit: Future / Simon Bevan)

Wallpaper may not appear to be the most obvious choice when decorating a kitchen, but is definitely worth considering. Traditionally, homes were broken up into many separate rooms, but since now the norm is open-plan, ‘zoning’ your kitchen ideas with decorating is helpful.

Being the heart of the home, kitchens are busy, bustling areas. As a result, you can really have some fun with your wallpaper, matching the energy levels with a fun print or pattern. Plus, a standout wallpaper creates a visual focal point in the room, steering the eye away from all the practical but not overly pretty gadgets on countertops.

Since kitchens can be messy, with food and oil splattering on a busy stove, so choose the type of wallpaper carefully. Vinyl wallpapers are one option, but now there are a plethora of waterproof and wipeable wallcoverings available too, from country wallpaper ideas for kitchens to more modern designs.

If you can’t find the exact wallpaper you want in one of these styles, then behind a stove or sink you could also look at protecting the paper by sealing it behind glass or transparent acrylic.

31. Create a sense of occasion in a dining room

Dining rooms have boomed in popularity this year to embrace entertaining at home. Equally, for those with open plan homes, the dining table is seeing a lot more love. In either scenario – dressing a whole room or zoning an open plan space – dining room wallpaper ideas are ideal.

Most often used in the evenings, or in the darker days of winter, dining rooms have the ability to hold dark, dramatic colors and patterns.

There is more wall than anything else in any scheme so adding interest here is key. ‘This can be achieved through wall murals,’ says Martin Waller, founder of Andrew Martin.

Textured wallpapers such as grasscloth, cork or paper backed silks can also define a design direction so simply. ‘They add immediate depth and can demonstrate Asian heritage, Parisian Glamour or Saville Row sophistication at a stroke.’

Embrace bold, bright shades in your wallpaper ideas, which look wonderful by candlelight, but also experiment with dark grays, navys and emeralds in this space, and go as elaborate as you feel comfortable with the print.

Another great option for wallpapering a dining room is to choose a tapestry-like print for a dramatic, rich feel. Similarly, red is an exciting color choice here, as in color theory it is said to provoke conversation – perfect for long hours seated around a table.

32.

Hang an innovative waterproof wallpaper in a bathroom

Contrary to popular belief, wallpaper and bathrooms do mix. Say goodbye to metro tiles on the wall and say hello to pattern and bathroom wallpaper ideas.

Naturally, you do have to use a specific type of waterproof wallpaper to make this look work. While in a kitchen you can get away with wipeable coverings, when considering paper for your bathroom wall ideas you need specifics.

Louise Ashdown, head of design at West One Bathrooms, explains about Wall & Deco’s bathroom wallpaper, WET SYSTEM . ‘It can be installed absolutely anywhere in the bathroom: directly in the shower, in a steam room or behind the bath, on the floor or the ceiling,’ notes Louise.

‘It is a fully waterproof membrane, meaning it does not get damaged when in direct contact with water, as opposed to a normal wallpaper which will not suffice for the humidity you get from bathrooms. Because you can install it directly in the shower, it is the perfect option for making a statement – plus no grout lines and it is resistant to abrasive cleaning products, so easy to wipe clean!’

As a bonus, Louis points out that the wallpaper available at West One Bathrooms ‘can be applied onto existing wall murals, so no need to remove existing paint, wallpaper or tiles – this can go straight over it. When ordering the wallpaper you get all the relevant glues and sealants to prep the wall – the wallpaper needs to be treated three times (primer, adhesive and then the protective finish).’

33. Pick pretty floral wallpaper ideas for bedrooms

(Image credit: Future / Simon Brown)

Bedrooms and wallpaper are a classic pairing. Opt for neutral and pastel shades for the ultimate in relaxation.

One of the biggest current trends in bedrooms is the use of plantlife. Bring this onto your walls by embracing prints showing florals and foliage.

When planning bedroom wallpaper ideas, keep things as restful as possible, so don’t choose too small of a repeat or it will be distracting. Similarly, steer away from enlivening colors like yellows and reds, as they will be too stimulating to allow for a good night’s rest.

34. Choose textured wallpaper ideas to add interest to a bedroom

(Image credit: Future / Alexander James)

Adding a textured finish to your bedroom wall is easily achieved using wallpaper, and is a great choice for hiding imperfections on an existing surface due to the thicker nature of the paper.

Textured, or slightly raised, prints create an interesting focal point and can add a touch of luxury to any bedroom.

35. Get creative with bold wallpaper in a child’s bedroom

Kids’ rooms are somewhere you can have the ultimate in fun in decorating.

There are really no rules when it comes to kids’ room ideas. However, it’s recommended to steer away from decorating with stimulating colors, as children can be hard enough to put to bed as it is.

One children’s bedroom wallpaper technique that works well is choosing a plain color wallcovering with one striking, mural-like image. As well as looking sweet, the benefit here is that, redecorating as they grow up and tastes change, it’s easier to repaper or paint the wall bearing the image.

Are wallpapers still in style for 2022?

Yes, wallpaper is very much in style in 2022 and is, in fact, growing in popularity, with hand-painted wallpapers very much on trend. ‘The pandemic really turned our attention to our homes’ decor, and there was a real surge in adventurous decorating,’ says Homes & Gardens‘ Editor in Chief Lucy Searle. ‘We tired of all-plain, painted schemes and instead looked to pattern to individualize our rooms and to make them feel cozier. Wallpaper creates a visual trick, making walls advance, which in turn makes rooms feel more intimate. There is no sign of wallpaper’s popularity waning.’

Should I wallpaper every wall?

Where once feature walls were very much in fashion, now wallpapering every wall is more on trend. If you know how to wallpaper, you will know that you can use it on all four walls to very quickly transform a plain space. However, it is always worth knowing that removing wallpaper can be difficult and costly, so you will want to be entirely sure that you have made the right choice before papering all four walls.

Verdant Tranquility

Florida-based designer Nikki Levy proved that wallpaper belongs in the bathroom with her design at the 2022 Kips Bay Decorator Show House Palm Beach in Palm Beach. First, Levy covered walls in an emerald vinyl abaca mural by Phillip Jeffries and continued the floral onto the vanities. The patterns don’t stop there as she used a different geometric pattern (also Phillip Jeffries) to trim the upper cabinetry. The room is encased in radiant green tiles from Artistic Tile.

Buzzy Game Room

No room quiet captures Ashley Whittaker’s ability to balance elegance with playfulness more so than this intimate, Connecticut game room. In place of a traditional stripe, Whittaker pieced together two 18th-century Indo-Persian borders (Pierre Frey) to clad the room’s walls. Polished brass tables by Soane Britain provide a chic place to set drinks while lounging on the banquette (fabric, Clarence House).

Playful Citrus Groves

Alice Engel and Peter Pennoyer of Peter Pennoyer Architects pulled inspiration from Palm Beach’s rich history and citrus farms for the dining room at the 2022 Kips Bay Decorator Show House Palm Beach. The tangerine shade of Phillip Jeffries grasscloth proved the perfect backdrop for decorative artist Hayden Gregg to embellish with whimsical lemons trees. The vivacious tones continue onto the billowy window treatments fabricated by The Shade Store.

Sunny Visions

Houston-based designer Paloma Contreras knew from the start she wanted to clad the walls of the 2022 Kips Bay Show House Palm Beach sunroom in treillage, but she needed a reliable backdrop for the grid-like pattern. In came a soft tan wallcovering (Schumacher) to add a layer of texture to the bright room. A celery-green tuxedo sofa is framed by a pair of white lacquer side tables by oomph Home.

Always Look Up

Since the dining room in the 2022 Kips Bay Show House Palm Beach lacked wall space, designer Beth Diana Smith decided to experiment with wallpaper on the ceiling. A mesmerizing jungle motifs (The Vale London through Fabricut) plays out between teal blue coffered panels in whimsical fashion. Farmhouse Modern

Designer Heather Chadduck Hillegas looked for clever ways to wake up this century-old farmhouse in Arkansas without losing an ounce of its historic charm. Youthful patterns became her design secret weapon as shown in the breakfast room where a lively forest scene, first developed in the early 20th century, decorates on the walls. The vintage portrait is by Unique Black Sheep.

Healing Hues

Designer Noz Nozawa’s main goal for the upstairs sitting room in the 2022 Kips Bay Decorator Show House Palm Beach was to create a morning room where people could feel rejuvenated. She relied on an animate wallcovering from Porter Teleo in an eccentric lavender-pink colorway to energize the entire space. A geometric sofa fabric from Soane Britain and bullion fringe (Stroheim) pulls in the tomato red hues seen in the toile drapery by Sasha Bikoff for Vervain.

English Gardens

In the entry hall of her Wiltshire estate, English gentlewoman Esther Cayzer-Colvin meticulously made sure the chinoiserie wallpaper from de Gournay did not feature any depictions of man-made objects so the forest scene felt like it was bringing the outside in. The entry table and embroidered chairs were made for Ditchley Park, her grandparents’ famed Oxfordshire estate.

Hints of the Tropics

Designer Philip Gorrivan worked with Fromental to create a hand-painted wallcovering inspired by the leafy landscapes by French painter Henri Rousseau for the sitting room in the 2022 Kips Bay Show House Palm Beach. Palms and florals in shades of tobacco, iris, and rose reference the native flora of Palm Beach without feeling overly kitschy. The room is anchored by a medley of Italian antiques from Gary Rubinstein Antiques.

It’s a Jungle Out There

Panoramic tropical oasis-themed wallpaper may not have been the logical choice for adorning the dining room walls of a 19th-century Paris loft, but design firm Le Berre Vevaud makes it look like a practical solution for bare walls.

The inspiration behind this Besson wallpaper actually comes from the Napoleonic campaigns in Egypt, which is tastefully accented with a monkey sconce from Seletti, a natural fiber light fixture, and a funky velvet banquette upholstered in Pierre Frey velvet fabric.

Give your walls a new lease of life

Cole & Son

Wallpaper is one of the most useful tricks in an interior designer’s toolbox. It can reinvigorate a tired space with colour and pattern, introduce texture into a neutral scheme and inject character into a room lacking in architectural detail. There are probably as many wallpaper choices as there are paint colours, from metallics to tropical prints, florals and geometric motifs. To help you pick the perfect pattern, we’ve rounded up the best designs out there. Click or scroll on to get inspired…

Terrazzo

Etsy / anewalldecor

Terrazzo flooring is still a major trend, so it’s no surprise that its fragmented design has made its way onto our walls as well. We love this refined take on the look, which blends terracotta, grey, blue, green and ochre in a large-scale pattern. It would sit pretty alongside a fresh white kitchen or in a retro dining room with vintage and mid-century furniture.

Line art

I Love Wallpaper

Line art is all the rage in the interiors world right now. This incredible wallpaper print inspired by artists such as Pablo Picasso takes the humble wall treatment to a whole new level. Balance the dramatic look with simple furniture and introduce colour via fixtures such as pendant lighting.

Pastoral print

Tapeten und Uhren

Bringing the outside in is a popular trend, and this beautiful green allotment print does exactly that. The versatile design will look stunning in a space where you want to blur interior or exterior boundaries; an outdoor office, utility, sunny conservatory or even a hallway.

Soothing swallows

Tapeten und Uhren

Pretty bird-print wallpaper makes a soothing, tranquil addition to a bedroom scheme. White silhouettes offset against a soft sand hue create a welcoming feature wall that complements the exposed wooden beams and homey country-inspired touches.

Beautiful botanicals

Little Greene

We can’t get enough of botanicals right now and this trailing horticultural print is a beautiful way to give your walls an au naturel makeover. It’s a reinterpretation of a painting from the mid-20th century and comes as a three-panel repeat mural – perfect for plant lovers!

Modern frieze

Woodchip & Magnolia

Like us, you might squirm at the thought of adding an 80s-style frieze to your newly decorated living room, but modern wallpaper borders are making a stylish comeback. With a subtle greyscale landscape, this is the perfect choice for those who aren’t quite brave enough to take the ‘full mural’ leap.

Literary illusion

Graham & Brown

There’s no need to spend years perfecting your book collection when you can get the look instantly with faux floor-to-ceiling library print wallpaper. Whether you want to trick the eye or create a statement with an abstract interpretation like this stylish black and white feature wall, the literary illusion will add character to your scheme.

Exquisite emerald

John Lewis

This rich bedroom wall has depth and architectural interest thanks to the textured finish of the wallpaper. The sumptuous emerald green is an ideal pairing with Art Deco-style furniture and dark mid-century fixtures.

Marvellous marble

NAT MAKS

NAT MAKS handmade wallpaper has tapped into the hot marble trend with this colourful, creative design. The inky hypnotising swirls have a fluid seascape feel that lends itself so well to bathrooms.

Retro revival

Geometric shapes and a rich colour palette create a striking combination that will never go out of style. To stop your space feeling too busy, opt for no more than two or three key colours in your chosen wallpaper design, and draw these hues out in your accessories. Complete the look with mid-century-style furniture to complement the retro revival.

Art Deco allusion

Graham & Brown

This pink and metallic wallpaper harks back to the glamour of the Art Deco era by calling on streamlined, geometric shapes and luxurious gold accents. Use it to make a bold first impression in a hallway or to add drama to a living room – we love this half-wall design, paired with traditional panelling.

Kaleidoscope cool

Cole & Son / Sophie Robinson

It doesn’t get more wow-factor than this incredible kaleidoscope number from Cole & Son. The perfect way to make a bold statement, use it as a feature wall to elevate a living room or even update a dingy dining room. Sophie Robison has styled up a beautiful corner by picking out the pattern’s rich hues with a teal love seat and a pink sideboard.

Tropical chic

Dunelm

You don’t have to spend a fortune to get the fashionable jungle look. This uplifting palm print does all the hard work for you with its soft blue-green hue – combined with retro velvet furniture, rattan fixtures and pink chintzy artwork, it’s a match made in heaven.

Faux brick

Good Homes at B&Q

Wallpaper is a great way to cheat a look. For instance, a fake brick wall can add an industrial edge to your living space for the fraction of the time and cost of exposing a real one. Digital prints or textured vinyl will look the part in a hard-working home office.

Breezy beach vibes

Burke Decor

Bright breezy palm prints evoke classic coastal charm in a bright living space. It’s the perfect choice for a seaside-themed bathroom or utility room, especially when teamed with refreshing whitewashed woodwork and sea-shell accessories.

The Little Greene Paint Company

Take a soak in the tub and transport yourself into a lush wildflower meadow with this beautiful teal design, which seems to grow from the skirting board. Carry the rich shade through your space with a coloured bathtub and coordinating storage.

Contemporary toile

John Lewis

Pictorial wallpapers have been part of interior schemes for centuries, so it’s refreshing to find a new interpretation of the classic pattern. We love this fun, retro print of trelliswork and ferns that offers a modern botanical twist on a traditional design.

Vintage roses

Wayfair

We love it when a trend comes back around and vintage blooms are no exception. This horticultural design in a soothing mustard tone elevates a simple grey living room, while the pretty trailing roses make it a country classic.

Moody murals

Dunelm

Mural wallpaper is a beautiful way of transforming your space and creating a unique look in your home. While it can look pretty expensive, it doesn’t have to break the bank; this Landscape Blue Mural, from Dunelm, creates a soothing seascape of watery indigo that’ll have you feeling zen in no time.

Fabulous photo art

Graham & Brown

Digital photographic prints bring the outside in, and no more so than this bold and romantic rose art mural. The dark base allows the bright blooms to burst with colour. Romantic drama like this will turn a plain living room into a work of art.

Tile trickery

Good Homes at B&Q

Tiles can also be faked with wallpaper, as this remarkably convincing Victorian-style offering goes to show. Papered in the bathroom, the monochrome tile-effect print looks so authentic that you’d have to get up close to tell that these aren’t the real thing.

Bold and busy

Dunelm

This flamboyant wallpaper takes the tropical trend to a new level. Not for the faint-hearted, this trailing navy colourway includes cheeky monkeys hiding amongst the jungle canopy. Wouldn’t it provoke a smile on a wall in a cloakroom or hallway?

Add an icon

Cole & Son

Every once in a while a statement wallpaper comes along that becomes a style icon in its own right. ‘Woods’ by Cole & Son is just that. Originally designed by Michael Clark in 1959 as a screen print, it features striking monochrome sketched trees. The sought-after woodland repeat has had updates along the way with metallic gold pear motifs and now whimsical stars, which conjure up a fairytale forest.

Artistic astronomy

Paint & Paper Library

Imagine relaxing in your bathroom staring up at the stars with this atmospheric design. The Paint & Paper Library commissioned artist Hugo Dalton to design eight wallpapers, one of which is this dark and dramatic pattern. On closer inspection, the geometric web depicts the navigation lines found on nautical charts.

Glamorous grey

Homebase

Grey remains a firm favourite as the new neutral of choice so, of course, stone-toned wallpaper is still in the spotlight. This distinctive design of quirky wildflowers and seed heads is sure to look modern and fresh in a hallway.

Faux wood

Homebase

Just like a faux brick, wood-effect wallpaper is a great alternative to the real thing and can be updated easily. If you fancy a natural cabin-in-the-woods vibe, then a rustic, dark-grained design like this will certainly transport you there.

Hot spots

House by John Lewis

If you want to add subtle design interest to a room without making it brash or busy, a simple dot print could be the right choice. The pared-back pattern will help your space feel modern and uncluttered by providing a neutral backdrop. For a hint of glamour, opt for gold or metallic dots that glint in the light.

Mixed materials

Graham & Brown

If you love texture, search for a design that combines a number of different finishes. This print mixes marble, wood and metallics in a funky geometric design. The pastel colourway and shimmery finish make it a stylish choice for teenage bedrooms.

Sophisticated Scandi

Laura Ashley at Next

Soft, neutral motifs are ideal for a Scandi-inspired living room. This delicate sunflower wallpaper print adds just enough interest to the walls without making the space feel cluttered – it’s clean, contemporary and is sure to uplift any room.

Shimmer and shine

If you’re looking for a subtle lustrous effect on every wall, choose a neutral shade with a shimmery finish. Not only will it add a glamorous edge to an ordinary scheme, but it’ll also maximise light in the day and create a reflective glow by night.

Tasteful tartan

Graham & Brown

Known for its warm and cosy feel, tartan wallpaper is a country classic if, perhaps, you’ve had enough of florals. This subtle contemporary version with tones of calming blush pink and grey weaved throughout is a great way to reimagine the iconic check.

Modern farmhouse

The Little Greene Paint Company

This beautiful bird-themed print was inspired by an original 1920s illustrative wallpaper. The perfect addition to a modern farmhouse-inspired kitchen, it makes a delicate statement set against neutral tones and copper accessories.

Muted metallics

Graham & Brown

Metallic wallpapers work in the same way mirrors do, with their reflective surfaces increasing light levels to make a room seem bigger and brighter. While some designs are bold and dramatic, this neutral take offers architectural interest and a subtle, lustrous finish that’s ideal for a home office or living room.

Experimental illusion

Graham & Brown

Trompe l’oeil is a French phrase meaning ‘deceives the eye’, used to describe something that creates the illusion of a real object or scene.  Perhaps for braver decorators, the reflective origami effect of this wallpaper seemingly contains a classic botanical print beneath that’s visible on closer inspection. It’s bold, beautiful and you will most definitely want to touch it.

Smart stripes

Farrow & Ball

Smart, tailored stripes help to increase the feeling of height in a room. Combining uplifting lemon yellow with tonal greys, this block print stripe would be a refreshing choice in kitchens and dining rooms.

Chevron chic

Arthouse

Recreate the groovy geometrics of the 1960s and 1970s to add a nostalgic feel to your interior. This woven chevron wallpaper will look striking in living rooms with its contrasting ochre and grey colourway. The fabric-look print elevates the classic, simplistic pattern, imparting texture and interest to a blank canvas.

Check it off

Dunelm

Yellow gives the classic check print a modern twist, especially when teamed with mid-century-style furniture. For a cosy Scandi cabin feel, keep it simple and team with distinctive wood grains and soft grey furnishings.

Graphic geometrics

The Paint and Paper Library

Wallpaper designer and artist Elizabeth Ockford has embraced the trend for geometrics in the home with the Gingko collection from the Paint and Paper Library. While this graphic pattern is no newcomer, it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere fast. A fusion of diamond, hexagonal and octagonal shapes in a soothing pink and teal colourway, it’s sure to stand the test of time.

Glorious glitter

Graham & Brown

It seems glitter is twinkling its way into more than just kids’ princess bedrooms these days. Used sparingly, glitter wallpaper can give your room a stylish and lustrous look. The design adds just a touch of sparkly morning drew to this delicate country motif.

Parquet remix

Osborne & Little

Trompe l’oeil wallpaper can also be used to create the illusion of specific surfaces, such as this parquet flooring effect.  The tessellating design is finished with grain-like detailing, giving it the appearance of real wood.

Modern trad

Anaglypta

Anaglypta, the textured, paintable wallpaper most commonly spotted in Victorian pubs and 1980s living rooms, is making a comeback. A fusion of 19th-century design and bold contemporary colour, this vibrant red reimagining brings the classic tactile covering in line with 21st-century tastes.

Call on concrete

Graham & Brown

This concrete-effect wallpaper is an easy way to inject a bit of warehouse chic into a living space. While the paper itself is smooth, it creates the illusion of texture, adding depth and interest to a scheme while still retaining a stripped-back, minimal feel.

Get gilded

Graham & Brown

This gilded wallpaper will add affordable luxury to any space. The rich teal blue is a sumptuous choice for a living room or hallway, while the gold embossed pattern will catch the light for the ultimate wow-factor.

Pattern to dye for

Sarah Bartholomew Design

Something of a design classic, the late 18th-century ikat design uses dye to create beautiful inky patterns on cloth and paper. It looks as fresh as it did 250 years ago and works equally well combined with antique or modern furniture.

Modern tapestry

Cole & Son

As wall murals grow ever-popular, we’ve fallen in love with this glorious pictorial forest wallpaper that pays homage to the historic tapestries of centuries past. A teal L-shaped sofa and seafoam green double doors draw out key colourways from the mesmerising masterpiece.

Wallpaper for the hall (50 photos), which wallpaper to choose for the living room – Interior ideas

Wallpaper is a quick and relatively inexpensive way to update your living room interior. Thanks to a wide variety of shades, patterns and textures, they can be used to transform a room, visually expand it, as well as make it cozy and stylish. In order not to get lost among the huge assortment presented in hardware stores, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the types of wallpaper, find out the pros and cons of each material, read the recommendations and see photos of the best examples of living room design using them.

Types of wallpaper for the hall, their advantages and disadvantages

Paper wallpaper

This is the most affordable type of wallpaper. Due to their low cost, they can be used for finishing rented apartments, dormitories, or simply replaced every two to three years with new ones. Depending on the type of paper used, there are matte and glossy products.

Thin one-layer wallpapers are also called simplex, and two-layer wallpapers, consisting of a dense substrate and a decorative front side, are called duplex. The latter are more resistant to getting wet, so they do not tear during gluing and better hide the unevenness of the walls.

The advantages of paper wallpapers are low price, environmental friendliness (they pass air and microparticles of water vapor well), a large selection of patterns and colors. Among the shortcomings, it is worth noting fragility, susceptibility to mechanical damage, fading in the sun, and also the fact that, while collecting dust, they are not amenable to wet cleaning.

Walls must be perfectly level for wallpapering.

Vinyl wallpaper

Such wallpapers are made by applying artificial material – polyvinyl chloride – to a paper or fabric base. It can be smooth, hard, foamed or embossed (silkscreen). The resistance of PVC to moisture makes this material an optimal base for painting, and its low weight and mechanical strength make it easy to attach it to walls. The high price is justified by a long service life – from 10 to 20 years, and in addition – the ability to repaint (up to 5 times).

Vinyl wallcoverings are resistant to moisture, sufficiently elastic and durable, able to hide minor wall irregularities. Volumetric drawings and beautiful texture make them a very aesthetic type of finish. The disadvantages of vinyl wallpaper include the unpleasant smell of plastic (which should disappear over time) and the fact that they do not let air and steam through the walls, do not allow them to “breathe”.

Textile wallpaper

The use of fabrics for wall decoration in the hall is not cheap, but their delightful appearance is worth it. Linen, satin, silk, velvet, with an amazing patterned weave – they make the interior truly luxurious.

Fabric wallpapers require very careful care – they should be covered from UV radiation and moisture, carefully cleaned. The environmental friendliness of such a finish depends on the material chosen, but in general, textiles pass air well.

Glass fiber

They are produced by weaving from the finest glass threads. The result is a very durable translucent canvas with a relief pattern. Such wallpapers are firmly fixed with starch paste on top of the plaster and can be re-painted.

The advantages of glass wallcoverings include environmental friendliness (they contain only natural materials such as quartz sand, limestone, soda, clay), fire safety (glass fiber melting point +600°C), durability (up to 30 years of operation).

The disadvantages are – a relatively large weight and poor choice of textures.

Liquid wallpaper

They can also be attributed to decorative plasters, because liquid wallpaper is, in fact, an acrylic solution with the addition of natural fibers (cellulose, sawdust, cotton, silk) and pigment.

This type of finish allows you to hide the original irregularities, create an interesting texture, paint the walls with a color gradient. Liquid wallpaper is easy to apply and remove, has a beautiful relief, evens out the surface of the walls. Glitter, small pebbles can be added to the composition of the mixture.

The disadvantages of finishing with liquid wallpaper include low moisture resistance.

It’s all about style!

A huge number of varieties of wallpaper allows you to find the perfect solution for any style of interior. Read on for tips on some of them!

Contemporary living room wallpaper

Art Nouveau suggests a discreet design in monochrome colors. For a living room in this style, plain or wallpaper with a soft graphic pattern (diamonds, circles, lines, abstractions), imitation of polished marble, metal are suitable. An interesting addition that creates a visual perspective can be photo wallpapers.

Classic living room wallpaper

Light wallpapers with golden or silver floral ornaments, repeating the texture of expensive fabrics (satin, brocade, velvet), natural sandstone, mahogany, soft leather, will harmoniously look in the classic interior of the hall.

Wallpaper for the living room in Provence style

For a living room design in the Provence style, it is better to choose matte pastel wallpaper with a small floral print. You can not glue them with a solid canvas, but frame them with plain inserts that repeat the color of the patterns.

Nordic living room wallpaper

The main motif of the Scandinavian style – snow-covered rocks and transparent blue fjords – should be reflected in the decoration of the walls. Wallpaper can be white, light blue, gray, with abstract patterns.

Photo wallpapers depicting a winter mountain landscape or a waterfall will also help visually expand the living room.

Country living room wallpaper

This style is characterized primarily by natural materials. Imitation of masonry, wooden boards or logs, hay, straw are the basic options for country music.

Wallpaper with floral patterns, plaid, pets, birds, butterflies, pastoral scenes will help create a relaxed rustic atmosphere. Photo inserts should also remind you of life outside the city: a lot of sun, sky, green trees, endless fields and horses.

Colors

White wallpaper

White wallpaper in the hall is an elegant, unobtrusive backdrop for brighter decor and furniture. They are always appropriate, visually expand the space and give it a soft glow.

Gray wallpaper

A neutral palette ranging from silver to graphite, perfect for both monochromatic designs and toned down bright accents. Living room in gray will always look modern and sophisticated.

Wallpaper in pastel colors

Soft, sun-bleached, bleached colors create a very soothing atmosphere. Light blue, lilac, sand, beige, pink, greenish – they all blend perfectly with each other.

Living room with such wallpaper will visually appear more spacious.

Brown wallpaper

Shades of brown are ideal for a cozy home environment. The color of coffee and chocolate is in perfect harmony with the soft glow of yellow, the festive purity of white, the spring vivacity of green, and the heavenly elevation of turquoise.

Yellow wallpaper

In yellow tones, it makes sense to decorate the walls of the hall, the windows of which face the northwest side. Banana, lemon, orange wallpapers will fill the living room with warmth and light, and give the inhabitants a good mood.

Living room wallpaper combination

So that the living room does not get bored with monotony, it is worth using different elements for wall decoration. A successful combination of plain and patterned wallpapers will help to beautifully zone the space, increase the height of the ceilings, expand or narrow certain areas, highlight dark corners.

Using this technique, you should be guided by the shade combination table. The most harmonious look is a uniform base and patterns repeating in color on a lighter background. Glitter prints reflect light and grab attention; lines visually stretch the room; large elements fill the void of too large halls.

Wallpaper in the hall can also be combined with paint, decorative plaster, ceramic tiles, brick or stone masonry, wood veneer, cork and plastic panels. Carved wooden frames, stucco molding (or its imitation from polyurethane), plasterboard niches will help to highlight the most interesting areas.

Wallpaper for a small living room / hall in Khrushchev

The main task of designing a small living room in Khrushchev is to make the room seem more spacious. To do this, the wallpaper should be light, plain, with a small, neat pattern and vertical accents. You can add depth with the help of photo inserts and optical 3D effects.

If the wallpaper contains reflective elements (sequins, silk patterns, fluorescent coatings), it is necessary to provide good lighting – and they will give the room an extra shine.

It is better to refuse large images, three-dimensional relief and bright contrasts on the walls in a small room.

Wallpaper for the hall – photo idea

In our photo selection you can see how different wallpaper for the hall looks in the interior. Visual examples of the best design solutions will help you quickly make a choice and equip even the smallest living room with exquisite taste.

Wallpapers 2022 – 100 photos of new designs.

Non-standard solutions for interior design with modern wallpaper

> Modern ideas > Wallpaper 2022: TOP 100 photos of the best new products and stylish design. Recommendations on how to perfectly combine the color and style of wallpaper in the interior

Before about 50 years ago a technological chemical revolution took place in the former Soviet Union, paper wallpapers were the main and the only ones in the decor of apartments and houses. Yes, they were in short supply. Later, vinyl, non-woven coatings appeared. Today they are the main rivals of paper tapestries, bamboo and other finishing materials.

The former are called polyvinyl chlorides or PVC, although they are a real chemical radical with a complex formula. Household “vinyl”, which began with flexible gramophone records, won a place in the market of finishing materials.

Beautiful wallpapers of 2022 are still paper, vinyl and partly non-woven. The last two are a couple of rivals to paper tapestries, but they cannot yet surpass them. Other finishing materials are refined, and therefore expensive.

Content:

Five in decor: paper or vinyl?

Browse the various pictures of wall papers on the site and choose the ones you like. The wallpaper market has five main wall coverings: paper, vinyl, acrylic, textile and cork.

The first two types of wallpaper most in demand are paper and vinyl. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. What type of room wall covering to give preference to – this will tell you the latest wallpaper design.

Paper tapestries

Paper wallpapers originated in East Asia and spread to Europe in the 18th century. All types of wallpaper came from them, turning these tapestries into classics for wall and ceiling decoration. They would have sunk into oblivion long ago if they had not been constantly improved both in the upper layer of the coating (external charm) and in the lower one (strength and ability to softly fit on the walls). Modern wallpapers in the interior will decorate both large and small apartments, country houses.

Benefits:

  • The demand for “paper” for walls lies in its budget. The cost of finishing any apartment with paper wallpaper is the lowest.
  • Environmentally friendly. She keeps the wallpaper in the foreground at the desire to have an ecological spirit in the apartment, the house.
  • There are so many “chemistry” in them that it’s time to suffocate. The “reincarnation” of such wallpapers is being strengthened: rarely in which bedroom and children’s room will vinyl or acrylic wallpaper be pasted.
  • Paper wallpapers have one or two covers. Double reliably protects from external influences, in which “paper” was inferior to vinyl and non-woven.
  • Under them there will never be any mold or fungus, because the wallpaper “breathes”.

Disadvantages

  • Single-ply paper wallpapers are the cheapest and are losing popularity due to moisture absorption and peeling from the walls.
  • Not suitable for damp environments or where splashes from clothes, umbrellas and dirt from shoes get on the walls.
  • Paper cannot be cleaned or washed.

Vinyl wallpaper

Vinyl wallpapers are so called because of the top layer, and the bottom one is more often on a paper or non-woven basis, on which the characteristics of the wallpaper as a whole depend to a greater extent. After that, a drawing is printed or embossed, or corrugated.

Vinyl allows you to embody the artistic delights of wallpaper factory designers. On it you can place any drawings, patterns, imitate relief.

There are several types of vinyl decor: hard, smooth, foam vinyl and silkscreen. The first two provide a flat coating, and even to the touch show an unusual density of the material. Silk-screen printing, often by hot stamping, helps to apply high-quality and resistant to fracture, erasing prints of any design.

Benefits

  • The price of them is decreasing, increasing the demand in the wallpaper market for walls.
  • Serve from 10 to 20 years.
  • Care consists of damp wiping.
  • Designs and textures are enough.
  • Will not fade in direct sunlight. Kitchen, bathroom – for them.

Disadvantages

  • Like any synthetic or polymer, they release toxic and allergenic substances.
  • Even if the certificate has a reference to compliance with sanitary standards, you should not glue it in children’s rooms and bedrooms. In other living rooms – only with the possibility of frequent ventilation.
  • Poor quality vinyl wallpaper is sold without micropores and mold and mildew can develop underneath.

Briefly about two other types of wallpaper

Consider non-woven and textile models. Non-woven got their name from the brand. They are made from a class of semi-synthetic non-woven (like paper) materials with a base of cellulose and a part of polyester.

Non-woven wallpaper, with its durability, is indispensable for pasting walls with cracks and other flaws. You won’t find better maskers.

You can also paint them yourself, that is, you can decorate them as you wish. Exquisite non-woven wallpaper – under silk, velvet, metal, other materials.

Textile wallpapers are beautiful, but they are difficult to glue and clean. Oddly enough, but most suitable for children’s rooms. They are very soft to the touch, which children love. Especially if the prints depict flowers, birds, animals. Children affectionately stroke them, thus learning the world.

In the design of 2022, they will also decorate other rooms. Especially those that are covered with a protective layer.

Today you can find dozens of wallpapers in all price segments and for any task. Now the trend is environmental friendliness – consider this when choosing a material.

Which sheets are suitable:

  • Paper. Inexpensive and basic option for budget repairs. The main advantages are low price and complete environmental friendliness, so they are suitable for bedrooms and children’s rooms. Of the minuses, this is not the most durable material that really does not like moisture, so it is better to choose a different type of coating for a kitchen or hallway.
  • Vinyl. More durable and practical compared to the previous ones, they cost a little more. They consist of two layers with a base of interlining or paper. The top layer is made of foamed or smooth vinyl. If you need to design a wet area, choose the second option – it does not allow moisture to pass through. Foamed vinyl has good breathability.
  • Non-woven. They are made from compressed cellulose fibers, thanks to which they look like paper. But, unlike them, they are much stronger and are not afraid of moisture. They can be washed and dyed.
  • Textile – expensive and capricious in care, but very elegant and beautiful fabrics. They consist of several layers: the base is paper, then comes the fabric. Textile covers collect a lot of dust, so you have to clean them regularly, and they are not suitable for wet areas. This is a beautiful option for a living room, bedroom, study or walk-through corridor.
  • Glass fiber is a modern material made from durable glass threads. The coating is anti-vandal, durable and moisture resistant. It will not grow mold or fungus. They are produced for painting, so you will not find ready-made patterns – but you can draw them yourself.
  • Liquid is a novelty in the world of finishing materials, which is steadily gaining popularity. The coating is available in the form of a mixture and the texture is more like plaster than classic wallpaper. In terms of technical characteristics, it is similar to fiberglass: it lasts a long time, is not afraid of moisture, and definitely will not become a breeding ground for fungus. And it is also made for painting, so you can choose any color and, if you wish, make an artistic painting on the walls.

    Choosing wallpapers for different rooms

Consider the brightest and most current wallpaper trends in 2022 with a photo in the interior.

Gradient

Social networks of designer Zhenya Zhdanova

This coloring has been confidently among the trends for several years, and it can safely be included in the list of 2022. A gradient is a smooth transition from one color to another, which looks very nice on the walls. These can be both contrasting shades (yellow and blue, purple and red, black and white, etc.), as well as different tones of the same color: for example, from dark green to light or from mother-of-pearl to anthracite gray.

Gradient finishes are good because they look unusual, but not too flashy, so they are suitable for modern minimalist interiors. The color transition itself can be either almost imperceptible, or in the form of blurry stripes or, for example, large spots. Choose a design based on what visual effect you want to achieve. For example, vertical lines will make the room a little higher, horizontal lines will “push apart” the walls, diagonal ones will add dynamics to the space.

Abstraction

The abstract print does not lose its relevance. Such wallpapers can be entered into almost any style, for which designers are very fond of them.

Design: Svetlana Kuksova. Photo: Natalia Mavrenkova

There are two types of abstract canvases: bright and large pattern or discreet low-contrast ornament. The first option is best used for local accent decoration, the second – for the design of all walls. Among the variety of prints now in trend:

  • Imitation of abstract paintings – spots and smudges of paint, broad strokes, etc.
  • Graphics and sketches.
  • Patterns of lines and dots.
  • Laconic monograms and other stylized classical ornaments.

Botany

Floral wallpaper is not only the Provence style or associations with the grandmother’s house in the country. A floral ornament can create a completely different atmosphere (examples are in the photo below).

Social networks of designer Svetlana Vershinina

Considering which wallpapers will be fashionable in 2022, among the floral patterns it is worth highlighting:

  • Small flowers – suitable for romantic and delicate interiors in neoclassical, English or French style.
  • Scandi motifs – as a rule, these are small low-contrast drawings of leaves, berries and buds. They go well with light solid colors and simple furniture in any room, from the bedroom to the hallway.
  • Large Flowers is a bold and eye-catching photo murals most often used to decorate an accent wall in the living room, bedroom or dining area in the kitchen. This technique looks especially impressive in combination with a dark rich palette.
  • Fruits and berries – “edible” ornaments are best suited for the kitchen and dining room in an apartment or a country house.
  • Greenery – not only flowers belong to the floristic theme. It can also be laconic semi-abstract wallpaper with a pattern of green twigs, leaves, needles, etc.
  • Tropical motifs – palm leaves, exotic fruits, creepers and ferns.

Vostok

Exotic fashion is unlikely to disappear in the near future, and oriental themes are especially popular in interior design. Particularly Japan and China.

Social media studio MINDTHEGAP International

Oriental wallpaper is a non-trivial and complex solution that imposes a certain responsibility. To fit them into the environment, you need to take into account every little thing: colors, combination with other finishes, furniture design, decor. The room should not look like a hall of an ethnographic museum, while it is important that the walls decorated “under the East” do not look foreign in the interior. The easiest way is to add some decor with similar themed ornaments or in the same style, diluting it with neutral decorations or furniture.

When choosing an oriental design, pay attention to:

  • A large plot print that does not repeat itself, but fills the entire surface like a painting.
  • Images of sakura and other native plants.
  • Chinoiserie – various stylized Chinese ornaments.

Fauna

Animal, bird and fish motifs are another spectacular way to decorate walls.

From current options, consider:

  • Exotic – tigers, jaguars, panthers, monkeys, giraffes, etc. A great option for an accent wall in a living room or creative workshop. It is best to complement such canvases with leather furniture, carpets, fur and wooden decor.
  • Birds – from cockatoo parrots to a flock of cranes and graceful hummingbirds. Tropical theme will fit well in the dining room or kitchen, more restrained – in the bedroom.
  • Marine theme – fish, jellyfish, whales and other inhabitants of the underwater world will look beautiful not only in the bathroom, but also, for example, in the living room.
  • Children’s drawings – cute animals and birds on the walls will delight both girls and boys. You can use photo wallpaper to highlight one side of the room (for example, the playroom or the wall behind the bed) or choose a laconic stylized print.

Metallic

To make a neutral interior more textured and interesting, metallic effect canvases will help.

Social networks of designer Zhenya Zhdanova

A light sheen will enliven a restrained palette (especially if it is based on gray), emphasize furniture and large decor. Typically, such models are produced in monochrome colors, most often black or graphite. To prevent dark walls from looking too gloomy, balance them with light details: floors, white ceilings, furniture and textiles. Another variant of the coating with a metallic effect is gold-plated threads on a plain background.

Graphics

If you like story canvases, replace the banal photo wallpaper or factory imitation of paintings with sophisticated and stylish graphics.

This category includes sketches, pencil sketches, graphics, murals, engravings and toiles. Most often, such drawings are made in black and white, it can also be a sepia effect. If the pattern is repetitive and non-contrasting, you can paste over the entire room with wallpaper. If it is an active and large plot print, use it as an accent. Combine with minimalist finishes and simple furniture in natural tones: black, gray, brown, white.

  • Monochrome

The general direction of modern design itself speaks about what other wallpapers are currently in trend. First of all, this is a focus on minimalism, and it implies the absence of ornaments.

Design: Alina Chapanidi. Photo: Mikhail Chekalov. Style: Katie Klee

That’s why simple plain wallpapers are more relevant than ever. But if smooth walls in a single shade seem too boring to you, they can be beaten with:

    • Pronounced texture — voluminous threads on textile canvases do not ripple in the eyes and do not violate the integrity of a calm monochrome interior, but look very interesting upon closer examination.
    • Imitations of textures – wood, stone, cement, metal, marble, brickwork and even tiles.

    Geometric

Geometric pattern is an ageless classic that will always remain relevant. The main advantage of this print is the ability to visually change the proportions of the room.

Stripes do this especially well: vertical ones will visually raise the ceiling, horizontal ones will make a narrow wall appear wider, diagonal ones will make the space look larger.

In addition to classic prints (polka dots, stripes, check), the interior will look stylish:

    • Patterns with optical effects, especially 3D.
    • Complex geometry.
    • Figures based on hexagons and octagons.
    • Stylized variants of basic geometric ornaments.

wallpaper for the living room and hall 2017

Creating a practical, functional and beautiful interior in the living room is a priority issue. After all, it is in this room that all household members spend their evenings, close guests are received here and large receptions or parties are held.

The living room can be safely called the hallmark of any home. The design of the walls of this room largely forms the whole image of the room, its character, mood.

That is why the choice of vertical surface finishing becomes a stumbling block for most owners.

The choice of modern finishing materials is incredibly wide, the spread in cost is also large – it’s time to get confused in a modern store. And yet, the most popular option for decorating the walls in the living room has been wallpaper for many years.

The technical characteristics of this finishing material are changing, improving, new collections from modern manufacturers appear, color and texture solutions are presented in an incredibly wide range.

Why is it so hard to find your perfect living room wallpaper? We hope that our large-scale selection of design projects for living rooms decorated in the most diverse ways will help you find the answer to this question and choose the best option for finishing the most important room in your home.

    Wallpaper for modern rooms

Despite the emergence of all kinds of ways to decorate walls in living quarters, wallpapers are confidently leading the list of current ideas. Most people choose to wallpaper the vertical surfaces of their living rooms for the following reasons:

    • they are presented in an incredibly wide range of colors and textures;
    • you can choose the material with the desired technological characteristics;
    • the spread in the cost of goods is also wide, a homeowner with any wallet size can find a suitable option;
    • wallpapering the walls is one of the simplest finishing methods that you can do yourself;
    • without the help of specialists and not jeopardize the aesthetics of the room;
    • with the help of wallpaper it is easy to create an accent of color or texture, highlight one or another functional area,
    • decorate walls;
    • wallpapers can be combined with other types of finishing materials;
    • it is easy to get rid of boring finishes and refresh the interior of the living room.

So, what factors will determine the choice of wallpaper for the living room in terms of color, texture and technological properties:

    • size and shape of the room;
    • presence, number and extent of window and door openings;
    • location of the room relative to the cardinal points;
    • decoration of premises adjacent to the living room;
    • if the living room combines a kitchen and dining area, then the choice of wallpaper will differ, first of all, in terms of the technical characteristics of the material;
    • personal preferences of the owners in the choice of color, wallpaper print;
    • the desire to create a calm, peaceful design of the room or highlight the room with a bright accent, an unusual pattern of wallpaper or a spectacular imitation.

Selection of wallpaper according to technological properties

If the common room serves only as a living room, then the choice of wallpaper according to technical characteristics appears before us in its entirety.

If, in addition to the living room, there is a dining room and a kitchen in the common space, then more stringent selection conditions are imposed on the finishing of vertical surfaces.

It is necessary that the wallpaper can be cleaned with a damp sponge, withstand slight mechanical damage without losing its aesthetic properties. At the same time, the decoration should create a single, harmonious image of a multifunctional room.

In the living room, for full or partial wall decoration, all types of wallpaper can be used in terms of classification according to technological characteristics:

    • Paper – the main advantage of this type of wallpaper is its low cost. A rich selection of colors, patterns and prints and high environmental friendliness can also be attributed to the obvious advantages of paper material. But fragility, susceptibility to color fading from exposure to sunlight and the lack of any possibility of cleaning the surface significantly reduces the popularity of this type of finish. Paper wallpapering may require replacement after 1.5 – 2 years of operation in a home with small children and / or pets.

    • Vinyl and non-woven wallpaper can be classified into one category of strong, durable materials with a wide range of colors and textures. Non-woven vinyl wallpaper can be repainted several times, creating a new image of the room without significant investment of time and money. Such wallpapers can be cleaned, even using wet cleaning, cleaning products. The material does not lose its aesthetic qualities for a long time.

    • Textile wallpapers look luxurious, have high environmental properties, and are able to “breathe”. But such a finishing material has a lot of disadvantages – in addition to the rather high cost, the surface cannot be cleaned with the help of tools (you must be very careful about the operation of such a finish).

    • Metallized wallpaper would like to be separated into a separate group. Although they can be made from different raw materials and have different properties, all types are related by the presence of golden, silver or copper luster in the composition of the material. Where, if not in the living room, you can afford a touch of luxury. Even in laconic modern interiors, the metallic sheen of an accent wall can create a special mood, increase the degree of originality and elegance of the image of the room.

    • Wall mural – can also be attributed to a separate type (whatever basis they are printed on). Modern technologies allow to carry out photo printing of the highest quality on any surfaces. Your wall with the image can be textured, have metal inclusions. You can choose any drawing – from your own portrait to a picture of the earth from space orbit, as long as the theme and method of printing fit organically into the overall picture of the living room design.

Actual ideas of 2017 – plain wallpaper or with a pattern?

Fortunately for us, designers do not give an unambiguous answer to this question. How many owners – so many preferences in the design of living spaces.

In addition, although the modern style gravitates towards minimalist moods, the decoration does not negate it. So, decorating walls with printed wallpaper is an actual way to decorate rooms such as living rooms.

If we talk about the monophonic execution of wallpaper, then designers recommend choosing natural shades in the new season. They not only create a favorable atmosphere in the room, but also make it easier for us to combine finishes with the colors of other interior items.

If the room is located on the south side of the building, then a cool palette can also be used. If the living room has access to the north side, and also has poor natural light, then it is better to give preference to warm colors.

A light palette will never go out of style. Moreover, there are enough apartments with small living rooms in our country. The old housing stock is replete with rooms with an area of no more than 15 sq. m.

Such a room needs a light color scheme for wall decoration that can visually increase the volume of the room. But this does not mean that it is necessary to use exclusively white.

You can use the design technique of an accent wall for one surface and use a wallpaper with a pattern (on a light background) or create a textured accent, use an embossed wallpaper that differs only in brilliance and a pattern visible only from a certain angle.

Gray never goes out of fashion. Universal shades of gray are able to create a neutral background to focus our attention on furniture and decor.

Elegance and nobility, restraint and even austerity – in shades of gray there is everything that is necessary to set a certain character of the room.

In addition, the gray background is ideal for integrating wood, pure white surfaces or dark contrasts.

Dark velvet (velor) wallpapers or canvases with embossing, slight metallic sheen or texture can radically change not only the exterior of the premises, but also its character, the prevailing atmosphere.

Of course, the use of dark colors in the design of living rooms is only worth creating accent surfaces and in the case of a well-lit space of medium and large sizes.

The trend of using wallpapers with imitations of various surfaces remains relevant. This can be the creation of a concrete wall, brick or masonry, wooden elements, even wall panels with peeling paint. It all depends on the effect that you want to achieve when decorating the main room of the home.

If we talk about imitations more extensively, then this type of decoration can include the use of photo wallpapers that create the illusion of wall decoration. You can create the feeling of finishing surfaces with fabric, soft fur or thorns, place a photo of a brick wall with a hole or a green lawn with a distant perspective.

Considering modern collections of wallpaper with prints, it can be argued that the most popular lately is geometric ornament.

At the same time, the drawing can be either clear, bright, colorful, or barely noticeable, as if blurring in space. Most often, wallpaper with a geometric print is a combination of two, less often three colors or shades.

One of the variants of geometric print – stripe, is a popular wall decoration option, including in the living room. Vertical stripes (even light, not colorful) can visually increase the height of the room.

And horizontal stripes will visually increase the volume of the room as a whole.

Plant and animal themes in the collections of printed materials have a clear oriental slant. Not only plants, but also birds, animals, insects become “participants” of the living room interior.

As a rule, these wallpapers look like art paintings and create a very special atmosphere in the living room. The uniqueness of the interior will be provided to you.

A few ideas for using wallpaper in the interior of the living room

Undoubtedly, the most popular way to use wallpaper for decorating a living room is to cover all the walls of the room. But this option can hardly surprise anyone, but creating a reliable, beautiful and strong enough protection for the walls of the room is quite half the force for almost all types of wallpaper.

If you plan to decorate all walls with one type of wallpaper, then it is important to remember some simple rules, which, however, are not the ultimate truth and may be subject to exceptions:

    • if there are printed curtains on the windows, it is better to choose plain wallpaper;
    • the smaller the living room, the lighter the tone of the finish should be;
    • a large, colorful pattern for small rooms is undesirable, but it is better to exclude a very small print that can cause a ripple effect – if wallpaper with an ornament is used, then it should be soft, medium in size;
    • if it is planned to focus on the bright upholstery of upholstered furniture in the room, then it is better to choose wallpaper in light, neutral colors;
    • dark wallpaper (contrasting pattern using dark tones) makes sense to choose as an accent in rooms with good natural light (panoramic windows or several medium-sized window openings).

The design technique for creating an accent wall in interior decoration has been used for a long time and very actively among our compatriots. This design can be used in rooms for various purposes, living rooms are no exception.

In some cases, it is in the living room that it is advisable to allocate one or another vertical surface in order to zoning the space, emphasizing the functional segment, switching attention from the site of the room that is unsuccessful in terms of geometry or layout.

Beautiful wallpaper that differs from the main background of the room in color, print or texture can be used not for the entire wall, but only for part of it. For example, you can highlight the chimney of a fireplace (that part of it that is not exposed to the flame does not heat up intensively).

The opposite option for decorating the space around the fireplace is to highlight the surface of the chimney with symmetrical canvases of beautiful wallpaper. Strict lines in combination with a delicate pattern will help create not only a harmonious (and what can be more traditional than symmetry), but also a slightly festive atmosphere of the living room.

Also wallpaper different from the main background can be pasted over living room niches into which a video zone or storage systems with open shelves are built. Any geometric nuances of the room can be presented from the winning side if you use accent trim.

No less effect can be achieved when pasting interior partitions designed to zone the combined space, in which, in addition to the living room, there are other functional segments.

The use of beautiful, expensive wallpaper to create a semblance of wall panels within moldings will help not only diversify the monochromatic finish, but also emphasize the belonging of the interior to one or another stylistic direction.

Zones with accent design, located according to all the rules of symmetry, will bring order and balance to the interior.

Another way to use wallpaper locally to decorate a living room is to cover the space inside niches with open shelves or bookcases.

In this way, it is possible to create the necessary color accent, and diversify the palette of the room and solve the issue of zoning by highlighting a segment for reading, a home library or a zone of storage systems.

Wallpaper for the kitchen – 115 photos of the best ideas for decorating the interior of the kitchen with wallpaper

When the average person decides to change the wallpaper, he is most often guided by a pattern, design or texture. But, such options are acceptable for the bedroom, living room. For the kitchen, the selection criterion is completely different, of course, if you want the new renovation to last a long time.

Absolutely not suitable for the kitchen:

    • paper wallpaper. Even with moisture resistant impregnation, they do not like moisture and absorb strongly odors and grease. So in a couple of years you will have to take back for repairs.
    • are made from natural materials (except bamboo and cork). Such wallpapers do not like moisture and odors, so the result will be similar to paper wallpaper.
    • Wallpaper made of acrylic with a relief pattern. Such material is easily damaged, and the relief is quickly covered with a hard-to-remove coating.

So what is the best wallpaper for the kitchen? Suitable wallpapers that are not afraid of dampness and temperature changes, easy to care for, which can be washed and such that you can repaint several more times. Of course, most would already like to choose modern wallpapers for the kitchen in 2022.

If you don’t know what wallpaper to choose for your kitchen, then you need to decide what you want. If you want practicality and that the wallpaper is washed or just to be beautiful, it is better to re-paste it after a couple of years. To do this, you can choose wallpaper on a non-woven basis with a vinyl coating. Before buying, ask the seller what class, if possible, this or that wallpaper belongs to: washable, waterproof, friction-resistant or super waterproof. If you still can’t choose, then there are many photo wallpapers for the kitchen on the Internet.

Another selection criterion is that you want wallpaper with a ready-made pattern or for painting, or a combination of all options. Wallpapers for painting are sold mainly in white and can be easily painted many times with ordinary water-based or acrylic paint.

    • A few design tips
    • 115 photos of the best wallpaper in kitchen design

Vinyl is good not only for records

Vinyl wallpaper is a good option for pasting the walls in the kitchen. Wallpaper will last an average of 8 years with careful care. Their advantages are moisture resistance, high density and affordable price. Although the price category directly depends on the thickness of the vinyl.

Such wallpapers are not afraid of greasy dirt, it is enough to periodically wash the walls with soapy water and then gently wipe them with a dry towel. This wallpaper idea for the kitchen will make life much easier.

    Cellulose is also not forgotten

Non-woven wallpaper is also great for pasting in the kitchen. The material is made from densely packed cellulose, so they are heavy and do not allow moisture to pass through. But their main advantage is that they breathe and mask the imperfections of the walls. This is the right wallpaper for the kitchen if you just want to freshen up the interior and not bother.

Even a beginner can handle gluing. This is simply due to the fact that the glue is applied to the wall itself, and not to the wallpaper.

Silk-screened wallpaper is one of the luxury non-woven wallpapers. Simply put, when a pattern is applied to a non-woven fabric with a silk thread. Despite this, silk-screen printing has retained all the ease of maintenance and durability. This is the same washable wallpaper for the kitchen.

Glass fiber in the kitchen is not a fantasy

When the walls are uneven, they have chips and cracks, do not worry about what wallpaper to choose for the kitchen, but simply buy glass wallpaper or fiberglass. The wallpaper canvas consists of a fiberglass mixture of quartz, sand, water and binders. Such wallpapers will look equally good both on perfectly smooth walls and on not very ones. Since such a coating will easily hide all the bumps and chips and reinforce the walls well.

Glass fiber can be painted up to 15 times with water-based or acrylic paint. Also, there will be no problems with washable wallpaper for the kitchen.

    A few design tips

Whatever you decide, the main thing is not to overload the interior. If you like catchy and colorful wallpapers, then the furniture should be restrained and simple, if you dream of a chic kitchen set, then the kitchen wallpaper should be as simple as possible.

It is also important to choose not only the right combination of colors, but tones. Cold shades to cold, and warm to warm.

If you want to use different wallpapers, then it is better to have them from the same manufacturer and in the same price range. Joints are easily masked by moldings.

These simple kitchen wallpaper ideas will help you choose what you really want.
