Apocalypse now! Ukraine conflict drives bunker sales in US, Europe

Texas-based company owner Ron Howard says he is making “millions of dollars in a week” as demand for bomb shelters spikes in many countries

Ron Hubbard has been in business for more than a decade. But never before has he made so much money as he is doing right now.

Hubbard, 59, is the owner of Atlas Survival Shelters, one of the largest bunker construction companies in the United States. And, in his own words, “They’re catching on and I’m selling the heck out of them.”

Fears over the conflict in Ukraine spiralling into a nuclear armageddon are pushing more and more people in the US and Poland, besides the besieged country, to buy Hubbard’s custom-made bunkers, Deutsche Welle reported recently.

Russia has rattled the nuclear sabre intermittently since President Vladimir Putin sent his troops into Ukraine for what he described as a “special military operation”.

Many experts have described the situation in Europe to be as fragile and dangerous as it was during the height of Nazi Germany’s march during World War II.

Texas hold ’em

Hubbard has a factory in Texas where he makes sophisticated bunkers with military-grade nuclear, biological, and chemical air filtration systems, a mudroom and decontamination shower, air and gas-tight waterproof doors, and power sources.

In 2021, he set up another factory in Poland. Besides bunkers, his factories also produce dozens of models of tornado and fire shelters. But the bomb shelter is his best-selling product right now.

There are so many orders now that he is “making millions of dollars weekly”, he says.

“Everybody buys bunkers, and nobody calls it crazy. Our business is doing well in Ukraine and Poland right now. I have several Ukrainian clients, wealthy people, who want a bunker as soon as possible, preferably right now!” the intrepid entrepreneur adds.

According to the manufacturer, demand for his products has been growing in both Eastern Europe and the US. Hubbard said he believes that his countrymen are also apprehensive of the Ukraine war touching their shores.

Hubbard’s products cost anything between $40,000 and $1 million. A standard bunker is three metres high and 12 metres long and costs about $200,000. It has all the bare essentials: a toilet, a sink, under-floor storage, food and water tanks. The air goes through a charcoal filter.

“People want a place that is underground, where they can hide their family, where they’re comfortable and safe. It’s a new trend in America,” Hubbard points out. “I am selling bunkers for millions of dollars every week. You might ask, what about ordinary people? Yes, it’s unfortunate, but the rich live better than the rest of us.”

The entrepreneur says that the whole world has been fearful of the nuclear threat lately. “When you turn on the news, you see North Korea talking about nuclear weapons. Russia is talking about nuclear weapons. China is talking about nuclear weapons,” the businessman says. “I’ve never seen people talk about it so much, and it’s scary.”

Poland, which shares a 232-km-long border, has also seen a growing demand for bunkers: more and more people have been calling up renovation and construction companies and asking about how to renovate, improve or turn their house basements into bunkers.

Such a project can cost up to $2500 to $7500 (from $35,000 to $100,000). The price of a private bomb shelter can be as high as $117000.

The N-word

Almost immediately after the start of the “military operation” in Ukraine, Putin instructed the Defence Ministry to put the Russian army’s deterrence forces, including nuclear weapons, on high alert.

At the same time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in April that there was a risk of a nuclear strike, though he tempered it down by adding that it was against “Moscow’s principled position” to prevent the use of such weapons. The next day, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin responded to the Russian minister, condemning such rhetoric as “dangerous and unhelpful” and added that Washington “will not get involved”.

However, the possibility of nuclear war has been discussed even before the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In March 2021, Admiral Charles Richard, the head of the U.S. Strategic Command, wrote an article for the official publication of the U.S. Naval Institute about “a real prospect of a regional crisis with Russia or China potentially escalating into a conflict involving the use of nuclear weapons”.

But Hubbard will believe that what’s bad news for the world is just good business for him.

One $550K Nebraska Home Is The Bunker Of Every Prepper’s Dreams

Zillow

By Ryan Hayward/June 30, 2022 3:36 pm EDT

When looking for the perfect home, there are plenty of things to consider before making a final decision. Is the home large enough for you or your family? Is it in a nice neighborhood? Is there a pool that can handle your semi-professional style of belly flops? Of all these boxes to check, surely home security and safety are at the top of that list. There’s a chance that you are searching for a residence in an area that is known for its terrible tornado seasons. Or looking for a place where earthquakes are a common occurrence. Either way, it can make your buying decision a whole lot easier if you know that a home can withstand anything that is coming its way.

However, when natural disasters are just a drop in the bucket when it comes to your daily worries, and you need a home that can give you that extra bit of safety, then there is a whole category of bunker homes that might help you sleep more soundly at night. These types of doomsday dwellings can be built from converted silos to full-on survival condo neighborhoods that can house upwards of 10,000 residents, according to New York Post. From fixer-uppers, and complete conversion projects, to upper-scale luxury bunkers, there are plenty of options out there for those that need some extra peace of mind. If you’re in the market for a bunker, then luck has it that there’s one available that may be just right for you.

A look outside this Nebraska bunker

BancWise Realty / Zillow

Located in York, Nebraska, just down the road from neighboring Lincoln, is a half-converted bunker that could make for a truly unique home. Resting on — or rather under — 6. 19 acres of the property is a long-since decommissioned missile complex that is for sale for $550,000, as per the listing on Zillow. A view of the property doesn’t do much to reveal what lies beneath the flat green grass surface. Other than a dusty paved driveway leading up to two separate concrete plots to park your vehicles and a circular patch of gray cement, there are almost no markings that would indicate a home is anywhere in sight. However, nestled into a small mound is a concrete doorway that serves as the main entryway into this bunker home. Hidden behind the thick steel doorway is a whole lot of history and incredible construction that lies deep underground.

Built in 1962, this plot is the home of a site where nuclear missiles could be launched called Atlas-F. Constructed in the era of the nuclear arms race with the Soviet Union during the Cold War, this site was designed by the Army Corps of Engineers and cost a reported $18 million, according to Nebraska Public Media. After just over two years of nonstop construction, a mere three years after the project was finished, the missiles were decommissioned. Among the former missile silos, most were purchased by the public and converted into homes, including this Nebraska site.

Step down into this decommissioned missile site for sale

BancWise Realty / Zillow

Once you make your way through the concrete-framed doorway of this old nuclear missile site in Nebraska, you follow a long pathway to another door that is made with 4-inch thick reinforced steel. This door is the main entrance into what was the original command center of this United States Army site. The space consists of two floors that spread out about 1,256 square feet on each floor, according to the listing on Zillow. At one point, the area was surely full of sophisticated equipment designed to monitor the safe containment of such immense materials and workstations for the engineers and officers. Now there are only the simple living room amenities needed for an American family.

The two living areas have full electricity and heat, with two water wells that flow to four 500-gallon storage tanks. Beds and couches are lined along with a simple dining room table. There will be plenty of need for additional lighting in living quarters so far underground, so the poured concrete walls are painted a bright white in order for the lamplight to bounce around the room. The flooring is laid with no-nonsense wood panels that spread about the uniquely shaped space. Around the corner from the bedroom/living room/dining room is the kitchen that is set up with a countertop that holds a microwave and toaster oven. Beside it is a tall exposed refrigerator that seems out of place without the benefit of a wall.

Hundreds of feet of unfinished space await you underground

BancWise Realty / Zillow

Connected to the two living spaces is an elongated 40-foot tunnel which at the moment is left unfinished and peppered with exposed pipes, wires, and other remnants of the technologies of days past. This tunnel would be a dream project to refinish for those with a flair for interior design. A green wall with a colorful arrangement of moss and other types of low sunlight-dependent plants could add some life and vibrancy to an otherwise sullen-looking part of the home. Exposed rusted metals that are at the forefront of most rooms in this bunker dwelling could easily be brightened by a fresh coat of paint.

At the end of the tunnel, you come to possibly one of the largest areas of the former missile site that could be the crown inspiration for any homebuyer’s future renovation projects for years to come. According to the homes listing on Zillow, this is the silo where the actual missiles were stored. Towering a full 174 feet down and 52 feet across is a massive open area that has not been touched for several decades. The silo stretches right up to a ground level, where it is capped by two 50-ton launch doors. This extra area can add many more square feet of living space to this home if you have the time, energy, and funds to make it happen. Once fully completed, this has the potential to be the underground bunker of your dreams.

  • A 312-acre survivalist property in New Mexico was listed for $30 million.
  • The property puts a luxurious spin on off-grid living with a koi fish moat, wine cellar, and views of nature.
  • See inside the main 4,000-square-foot six-bedroom home located 30 minutes from Taos, New Mexico.

“Doomsdayers” with deep pockets and a reluctance to give up a life of luxury have just found their match.

If you’ve seen doomsday movies, you may be expecting a dark and dingy underground bunker.

But the goal wasn’t to create one of these stereotypical compounds, Howard Mintz, the owner of the property, told The Wall Street Journal.

Mintz noted to the publication that he wasn’t a “survivalist psycho,” although he does see the benefit of living independently during a time of societal disruptions.

So just because the property is 30 minutes from Taos, New Mexico doesn’t mean its future residences will live uncomfortably and minimally.

The main living quarter isn’t fully complete yet, but Mintz is ready to let it go.

“[I’ve] grown out of the idea of being there,” he told the Wall Street Journal.

But here, life off-grid in the large house won’t be dark, dingy, and sad.

You Can Bug-Out To Your Own Cold War Communications Bunker For A Cool $695,000

If you’ve ever wanted to build your own impenetrable underground lair and have a spare $695,000, one seller on eBay has just the property for you. A Cold War-era communications bunker in western Kansas is up for grabs on the online auction site eBay, offering a lucky buyer the chance to own a piece of American history and the ultimate bug-out shelter.

The bunker, which is located outside Scott City, Kansas, sits on approximately 10 acres and is described by its seller as “an incredible asset to own.” Inside, it offers 8,000 square feet of underground floor space, plus an additional 3,800 square feet consisting of a “steel mezzanine” which makes up a second floor. The facility is complete with blast doors which “are nicely painted and functional” and the complex is described as being “EMP protected” without further detail, albeit if it was a Cold War communications site, this makes sense. “Clean floor surfaces,” the listing also boasts.

eBay/officefirstsolutions

The bunker is being sold on eBay by user “officefirstsolutions” who describes the bunker as “used in clean condition, being sold as is where is with no warranties. ”

The full description on eBay reads:

This site was built in 60’s at a cost of approximately $4 Million (1960’s money). This facility is an underground structure built as a power-feed station on a hardened transcontinental coaxial-cable route, extending from Airmont, NY to Mojave, CA. The installation was also a base of operations for the technicians who maintained a section of the cable route and its unattended repeater stations. The mineral rights go with the property.

This site is partially developed into a data storage center (could be used for legal grow space in near future) and the other half partially developed into a VIP residential area. There are a number of security cameras installed around the property to provide security for the facility. They can be remotely operated for off-site security monitoring. Included with this system is keypad and keycard access.

The bunker was designed to withstand a nearby nuclear blast, featuring walls and ceilings constructed from 18 to 24 inches of military-grade concrete and steel, with four to six feet of dirt between it and the surface. Inside, the ceilings are 16.5 feet tall.

eBay/officefirstsolutions

The facility features a standard 120v electrical system that can be upgraded to 480v, all powered by an on-site generator with a 2,000-gallon diesel fuel tank. In addition, there is an original backup generator at the site. A one-ton hoist at the bunker’s main entry can be used to load heavy equipment in or out of the facility.

eBay/officefirstsolutions

The bunker also features a 10,000-gallon stainless steel water storage tank, a newly-dug well, and what is described only as a “functional bathroom.” Two sewage ejector pumps feed into a “double reduction sewage lagoon system.”

The site even includes a 177’ radio tower outside the bunker that is described as “potentially income-producing.”

eBay/officefirstsolutions

An additional description on the eBay listing offers a variety of uses for the bunker:

I have one of the best and cleanest sites available, so much refurb work has gone into this facility, so much potential here, as it sits, it can be finished as both a data center, lab, legal grow room and residential center of straight residential, I have worked on this site for several years, put a lot more money into this site then what I am asking for it, due to health issues and relocation I am selling my project, for the right person this has a lot of upside potential, it will take some work to complete, vision, this is no money really for the facility and what has been done in comparison to what this would cost from scratch, this is a must see, please contact me for more information.

Only serious inquiries only, please be prepared to allow us to vet you and your party if you want any information sent to you as we WILL NOT send plans or detailed information for security reasons without first knowing who you are, verified email and phone number required, thank you for your cooperation on this matter.

The listing then notes that “all Data center equipment, racks, servers, battery back up, power distribution” are sold separately, and that the price is for the facility only.

Despite being described as a “VIP bomb shelter,” the accompanying images show the facility needs a little TLC. Pictures on the eBay listing show that the bunker is largely unfinished, with stacks of sheetrock panels and insulation piled up in some rooms and unfinished interior walls in others. For a hardened bug out shelter, though, the site looks hard to beat.

eBay/officefirstsolutions

Given its description as being on a “transcontinental coaxial-cable route, extending from Airmont, NY to Mojave, CA,” the bunker was most likely part of the AT&T L-Carrier Cable Network, a communications system developed to send telephone signals, and later television, coast-to-coast. AT&T began construction on the network in the years immediately following World War Two, and the line was upgraded beginning in the early 1960s in order to provide a hardened land line connection between critical military command installations that could survive an initial nuclear exchange.

The website ColdWarComms.org documents and archives these facilities, even including pictures of how many of them appear today. The site’s description of the switching stations used in the L-Carrier network sound quite similar to the bunker facility listed on eBay:

These were main stations providing circuit routing and power injection to the cable. Repeaters were located every mile or two along the route in underground manholes. The cable itself was buried a minimum of 4 feet deep. The spacing of the repeaters and main stations depended on the version of the L carrier system in use on a particular route, the location of cities to be served by sidelegs from the main cable, and geography of the area. Different classes of stations provided either just power feed, circuit termination, and circuit switching. The power feed only stations were the smallest, while the switching stations were quite large, and all located below ground for protection from nuclear radiation and blast effects.  The stations were constructed of reinforced concrete and had heavy steel blast doors.

ColdWarComms.org

Over 100 main stations and 1000 “repeater vaults” were constructed with enough amenities to sustain support crews for two weeks following a nuclear exchange. Every station offered nuclear early warning and blast detection systems. By the mid-1980s, the L-carrier lines were no longer needed, as faster forms of communication like fiber optic cable and satellites had made the coaxial copper cable that these stations carried from coast to coast obsolete.

These types of hardened military structures pop up for sale online from time to time. In 2018, an incredibly hardened former Royal Corps of Signals post built to spy on Soviet communications went up for sale, complete with its golf ball-shaped radome. In 2019, Grist House Brewing in Pennsylvania bought a derelict Nike Missile Master Direction Center from the 1950s outside Collier Township, Pennsylvania, and converted it into a brewery. Other Cold War-era facilities can now be rented out for television and film productions.

It might not be turning nukes into plowshares, but at least these abandoned relics of the Cold War’s past can be put to use instead of fading away into rubble. Whatever the future owner of the bunker might do with the communications facility for sale in Kansas, they’ll be doing it in one of the safest locations possible.

WASHINGTON, March 26 – RIA Novosti. The bunker is the best way not to get infected with the coronavirus COVID-19, some Americans are sure, confirmation of this is the unprecedented demand for these products. Representatives of the industry told RIA Novosti about the trends in the market of means for survival and self-defense. The company is engaged in the production of bunkers. The cheapest one-room bunker on their site costs $39,500, while the largest, with a sauna, plant room, billiard room, swimming pool, and multi-car garage, costs more than $8 million. The current surge in interest in building bunkers and other shelters is unprecedented. “Never before have we seen an increase in sales of shelters due to medical reasons. Usually our sales depend on political actions that can lead to infringement of freedoms or civil and social unrest,” Scott said. Meanwhile, notes he, usually the reason for buying a bunker becomes a number of concerns, but there is always a reason or main fear, and in this case it could be a coronavirus. Ron Hubbard, the owner of Atlas Survival Shelters, one of the largest US bunker and shelter companies, shares this opinion. . The cost of his company’s products also varies from several tens of thousands to several million dollars. “Yes, sales have increased compared to usual, but the virus only helps people decide that, in the end, they need shelter,” RIA Novosti said. “Safety, readiness is more reliable than “insurance”, which is help only after you have already suffered a loss. Our solution is to prevent this loss in the first place,” says US Safe Room spokesman David Davis. According to him, Americans now “understand more that safety, whether in the face of a hurricane, natural disaster, nuclear or biological threat, is a necessary precaution to ensure the safety of the family.” To meet these needs, the manufacturer’s assortment includes both underground and above-ground bunkers and panel structures that can turn even a closet or part of a room into a safe shelter. According to Scott, people of various professions and wealth order the construction of bunkers. “From the working class to famous people,” describes his clientele, an entrepreneur whose company operates under the slogan “We don’t sell fear, we sell willingness.” Readiness of this kind can cost clients several hundred thousand dollars, depending on the model, size and purpose of the shelter. When asked if he considers the bunker to be effective protection against coronavirus, the owner of the company answers in the affirmative. who you do not contact, it is simply impossible for you to become infected with COVID-19, so in the end, this is my advice,” he says. At the same time, Scott advises not to neglect the recommendations of doctors on behavior in the context of the spread of coronavirus: wash your hands thoroughly, keep your distance, do not touch your face with your hands, and others.

WASHINGTON, March 26 – RIA Novosti. The bunker is the best way to avoid contracting the COVID-19 coronavirus, some Americans believe, evidence of this is the unprecedented demand for this product. Industry representatives told RIA Novosti about the trends in the market of means for survival and self-defense.

“Yes, we are seeing a significant increase in both orders and questions about our products. As the situation worsens more and more, people are starting to think about building shelters and will invest in this,” commented the founder of the Rising S Company. Clyde Scott.

Waiting for the End: Bunker Business Booms Globally

Underground bunker building is booming around the world. It is fueled by more frequent local and global crises: armed conflicts, climate disasters, and now the coronavirus pandemic. Today, a personal bunker is not a whim, but an investment in your future.

Interest is exploding with private bunker business owners in the US, where the market is most in demand. Many of them argue that there are few orders from those preparing for Doomsday or the return of the Cold War. More people who aren’t paranoid but are willing to pay roughly $25,000 to get a livable underground home that will save them in an emergency. As writes The New York Times , buyers of these kinds of shelters say they just want to protect their families from an increasingly turbulent world. Many decided to build a bunker before the coronavirus hit and now feel ready for the next crisis. This desire for security embraces all sections of society – socially, politically, racially, religiously.

In the 1950s and 60s, when demand for bunkers first arose in the United States, driven by the threat of nuclear war and the Cold War, they were made from rot-resistant plywood panels and concrete blocks buried and covered with sand or gravel. Today, most shelters are made of steel or concrete. For example, the basic model of the American company Northeast Bunkers is a cylindrical vessel with a diameter of 2.5 meters and a length of 4-6 meters, welded from sheet steel 6 mm thick and equipped with an entrance hatch from above. The standard model includes corrosion-resistant exterior paint, cedar plank flooring, zero VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) interior trim, two vents, floor hatches for storage and an emergency exit hatch. Additional features include power connection, potable water system, septic tank, bathroom, kitchen, bunks and blast door. Such bunkers cost from 25,000 to 35,000 dollars.

Ron Hubbard, the owner of the Atlas Survival Shelters construction company , made about $ 2 million selling them in just one week in August of this year, In an interview with Business Insider, claims that his business has been revitalized since the new president took office: “Our clients tend to be Trump supporters, gun supporters, educated upper-class Christians. They mention their political views when explaining why they want to buy the bunker. They would rather build a shelter they might never need than risk being left without it. Everyone from CEOs to billionaires and celebrities buy our bunkers. And you know who doesn’t buy them? Democrats – at least they’re not buying doomsday bunkers. They can buy tornado or fallout shelters or cellars to store wine, but that’s about it. Since Biden took office, more and more clients have turned to the bunkers to prepare for potential disaster. Every time Biden is on the news, it prompts some Republican to call me and say, “This country is going downhill. I need a bunker!” Our sales are up because Biden is unknowingly contributing to the bunker boom.”

Atlas Survival Shelters Bunker

Atlas Survival Shelters offers a range of bunker models, from as small as 10 square meters for around $50,000 to as large as 1000 square meters for 5 000 000 dollars. As the owner of the company admits, everything is sold out, from standard models, which are always in stock, to custom-made ones. Atlas Survival Shelters’ bunkers feature military-grade nuclear, biological and chemical air filtration systems, a mud room and decontamination shower, airtight and gastight watertight doors, and self-contained power supplies. In addition, clients can furnish and decorate their homes the way they like to feel like a real home. For clients who want something special, there is a series of bunkers with built-in water tanks, spacious bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and showers, gun rooms.

Entrance to the Survival Condo in Kansas

There are bunkers for the richest in the world. For example, the Survival Condo in Kansas is probably the most luxurious of all. This is an Atlas ICBM silo converted into a 15-story underground bunker – a real residential area with spacious apartments, a swimming pool, a dog park, a theater and a store, reports the TimesNow website. All these structures are underground and surrounded by walls ranging from 80 centimeters to 3 meters thick.

Another bunker for billionaires is Oppidum in the Czech Republic. The two-level underground facilities include a swimming pool, spa, wine cellar, garden with simulated natural light, and facilities for a hospital. Oppidum was built in 1984, at the height of the Cold War. It is assumed that you can spend 10 years in it without communication with the outside world.

In Germany there is Vivos Europa – “modern Noah’s Ark”. This over 300,000 square meter fortified structure above and below ground is capable of withstanding a nuclear blast, direct airliner crash, biological and chemical attacks, earthquakes, electromagnetic pulses, floods and virtually any armed attack. Private apartments here cost more than 2 million euros, while semi-private apartments cost 35,000 euros.

By the way, the Vivos company that built this shelter plans to create a global community from many of these bunkers. As the coronavirus pandemic hit the world, many senior managers from Silicon Valley were rumored to have fled to a 300-person bunker built by Vivos in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Americans buy up underground bunkers amid pandemic – 04/16/2020

Ever since the Cold War in the 1950s and 60s, Americans, fearing a nuclear threat, began to build bomb shelters in their backyards. The movement was called Survivalism. The “survivors” acquired bunkers in the following decades, often meeting ridicule in their address. Now that the coronavirus has begun to dominate the headlines, many scoffers have begun to think about underground shelters, according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

U.S. home safety spending rose from $12 billion in 2011 to $22.5 billion in 2019, according to Freedonia Group, a Cleveland research firm. And bunker supply companies report that sales of underground shelters have more than doubled in the past few weeks. The cost of residential bunkers varies from $39.5 thousand to $3 million and more.

Private underground

In Northern California, a family installed a 15m rectangular bunker 3m deep in their backyard. The walls of the bunker are reinforced with 3-inch steel and reinforced concrete. The shelter, capable of withstanding a nuclear explosion, is equipped with air filtration equipment and protection against biological and chemical toxins. According to the WSJ, the sparsely furnished bunker cost the family $240,000 three years ago. The family feared civil unrest after the presidential election and is now using it as a precautionary measure during the pandemic.

Luxury underground residential complex

A completely different level of comfort is offered by Survival Condo – a luxurious 15-storey underground apartment with an area of 5 thousand square meters at a depth of up to 53 m in Kansas. This underground apartment building was built by Larry Hall in 2012 inside a decommissioned Atlas F missile silo.

Survival Condo in Kansas

Survival Condo’s 85 sqm condominium costs $1.5 million, while the larger one, which occupies an entire floor or 170 sqm costs $3 million. The total capacity of the apartments is 75 people, including staff. In addition to their own living space, condominium owners have access to numerous common spaces – recreation areas, a gym, a warehouse for storing things.

The residents have access to a swimming pool, table tennis, a climbing wall and other recreation and entertainment areas.

Underground LCD has its own store with a 5-year supply of food.

Survival Condo 5 year food supply

Where the missile control center used to be, Mr. Hall has built a fish farm with three types of tilapia and a hydroponic garden that grows spinach, carrots, lettuce and other vegetables.

In each block, windows simulate “living” outdoor views with different levels of illumination depending on the time of day.

Lizanne, a 63-year-old retired investor, says the WSJ feels safe inside Survival Condo after spending $4.5 million to buy a duplex penthouse in 2012: “It’s all very nice, he (the owner of Survival Condo) has thought of everything : the pool, the classroom, the library, the theatre, even the dog park.”

A false window is projecting the image from ground cameras into the Survival Condo.

The dungeon condo maintenance staff includes security personnel with firearms and technical staff.

Underground City

The world’s largest survival community, as Vivos xPoint calls itself, is hidden under the grasslands of South Dakota.

Vivos xPoint in South Dakota

Its founder Robert Vicino repurposed many bunkers that were used to store ammunition and explosives during World War II. 575 shelters are located along the road and are designed to accommodate 950 people. For your own private bunker without equipment and furniture, you need to make a one-time payment of $35,000 and an annual rent for the land of $1,000, according to the Vivos xPoint website.

Private bunker at Vivos xPoint

The owners of the bunker city also offered the option to purchase personal space in a fully furnished shared bunker starting at $60 per person per month, but this program was discontinued during the quarantine period.

Vivos xPoint Shared Hopper

In addition to the living space, the bunker is being used for public facilities – a restaurant, a bar, a shop, a warehouse, classrooms and workrooms, a medical clinic and a spa, a gym, and a swimming pool. The shelter has its own power generation, water treatment, climate control, ventilation and air filtration systems.

Vivos xPoint

“xPoint is the place you want to be when the world ends,” says California businessman Robert Vicino about his brainchild. And now, with toilet paper flying off the shelves in the US and gun sales skyrocketing, Vicino, like other bunker owners, is seeing a surge in sales and is preparing spaces for new tenants.

American bunker building company made millions after Trump was elected president

With more and more scary news about hurricanes and earthquakes lately, many Americans are stocking up on food, learning to shoot and buying underground shelters. Fuel is added to the fire by reports of nuclear threats from North Korea.

“Anyone can bury giant containers underground and sell them to people. But our company sells security,” said Rising S Company general manager Gary Lynch.

The firm does not disclose specific amounts, but claims 2016 sales were between $9 million and $14 million. The company plans to sell 200 shelters this year, Lynch said.

The original Rising S Company made shelters to shelter from storms.

About ten years ago, a woman approached the owner of the company, Clyde Scott, and asked him to build a larger shelter for her that would have all the comforts of home.

“She wanted a bathroom, beds, a sink, and video surveillance,” Scott said. “Then I realized that she needed not just a shelter, but a real bunker.”

Then Scott took $3 million from his current business and started a bunker building company. According to the firm’s general manager, Gary Lynch, their clients include professional athletes, tech celebrities, politicians, and celebrities. In an interview with Dazed and Confused, Scott admitted that his company is building a high-tech bunker for Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.

Rising S Company manufactures its bunkers in Texas.

They are made of steel coated with a special rubber that protects the structure from rust.

Rising S Company builds, delivers and installs bunkers in-house, without outside contractors.

Photo: Rising S Company

Customers can install the hopper in their backyard or some more remote location.

Photo: Rising S Company

Most of the bunkers are installed at a depth of 3.3 meters under layers of earth and concrete. According to Lynch, such a shelter can even withstand a nuclear explosion.

Photo: Rising S Company

You can hide in underground bunkers during floods, but this is not recommended by the manufacturer.

Photo: Rising S Company

It will be difficult to get to the shelter door underwater, and if it is flooded, you will not be able to get out and get medical help if you need it. Rising S Company recommends placing bunkers above ground if you plan to close in during a flood.

Photo: Rising S Company

After the flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey, a Houston family contacted the company and said the shelter had saved their lives, Lynch said.

Most of the bunkers can be reached by stairs. This is what the staircase leading to the shelter from the house looks like.

Photo: Rising S Company

You can live in the bunkers right away, even though they have no furniture. “We advise buyers to think of the shelter as an extension of their own home,” Lynch said. Everyone can equip the bunker to their own taste.

Photo: Rising S Company

Shelters come in a variety of sizes and prices. The cheapest costs $39,500 and is a “mini-bunker” with an area of 8.9 square meters. It has two beds, a small kitchen and a toilet.

Photo: Rising S Company

The most popular bunker is 46.4 square meters and costs $122,500. It has two bedrooms, bath, kitchen and separate living room.

Photo: Rising S Company

The main difference between houses and shelters is that the latter do not have windows.

Photo: Rising S Company

Thanks to solar energy, the equipment inside the bunkers works even at a depth of 3.3 meters.

Photo: Rising S Company

Customers can install a conventional or dry closet in the bin.

Photo: Rising S Company

Rising S Company also offers survival training courses to its clients, which are included in the price of the shelter. They teach what food to stock up on and how to distribute supplies.

Unfortunately, Lynch couldn’t share details about the elite bunker the Rising S Company is allegedly building for Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.

In any case, equipped bunkers that today can be used as storage for wine or home theaters, and tomorrow – on day X, in their bins there will suddenly be stocks of food and medicine for ten years in advance and, of course, all kinds of gadgets.

One of the most famous projects of the underground was the luxurious apartment complex Survival Condo, built in a former missile silo near Concordia in US Kansas. The entrance pair of doors to the building weighs almost 14. 5 tons. The thickness of the concrete walls is 9 m, which will withstand even in the event of a direct nuclear hit. The dome of the bunker is able to withstand winds up to 800 km per hour. The head of Survival Condo, Larry Hall, said that with the advent of the coronavirus, the number of requests for their suite increased by 800%, because in this high-rise building, stretching not as usual up, but down, underground, you can comfortably sit for five years: in addition to backup power generators, water supply sources with tanks and air filtration systems, the complex has a shop, swimming pool, gym, theater, bar and library.

But there are other developers who have caught the trend for rescue housing. For example, Virginia Beach-based Hardened Structures builds reinforced concrete shelters, casting walls and floors directly on construction sites, with the expectation that people in buildings will not even notice if a nuclear explosion occurs outside. In the development of projects for such houses, along with architects and engineers, SEALs and RCB protection specialists participate.

Northeast Bunkers has been building steel underground bunkers for almost twenty years, at 4-6 sites a year. But with the advent of covid-19they hardly have time to process orders, and some customers even end up on the waiting list. Moreover, there is a demand both for new houses and for the modernization of existing bomb shelters that were built in the second half of the 20th century. As a result, the basic model of the shelter from Northeast Bunkers is a cylindrical body made of the thinnest steel sheet with a diameter of 2.4 m and a length of 4 to 6 m. The cylinder provides an escape hatch, ventilation holes and cellars for storing supplies. If desired, you can add electricity to the package, set up a water purification system, equip a bathroom, kitchen and, of course, install an explosion-proof door.

Another American company, Atlas Survival Shelters, specializes in the sale of “panic rooms” and bomb shelters, which it presents in videos on Youtube. It is noteworthy that in this case we are talking about economy-class bunkers – Doomsday Bunker metal shelters, which also save during destructive tornadoes. But for a long time this “house in the pipe”, of course, will not be enough: the shelter is quite Spartan, and the available reserves will be enough for an autonomous existence, at best, for a few weeks. “No one bought a shelter to hide in during the pandemic, but many did as a result of the pandemic. People think that it is the beginning of something bigger,” says Atlas Survival Shelters owner Ron Hubbard.

Finally, the Vivos Group company from California, which in “peaceful” time is engaged in VIP training in trading on the world currency market FOREX, also began to build bunkers in case of doomsday – entire “condominiums” that can accommodate up to 10 thousand people, where they can live entire communities. The bunkers are being built at an abandoned military base in South Dakota, where explosives and ammunition were stored during World War II. Each of the shelters is designed to comfortably accommodate 10 people, but buyers can turn it into a suite just for their family. At the same time, the “houses” are sold in the basic configuration – without running water, electricity and air-purifying filters, and for further transformation, you need to hire a contractor, and the repair will cost almost more than the building itself. “This is the place you want to be when the world ends,” the company says.

In Russia, by the way, the demand for bunkers and “safety rooms” has also grown – about two times.

US residents are buying up bunkers en masse

Sellers of such structures and facilities are talking about a huge increase in demand for them.

In the US, there is a surge of interest in bunkers that protect against external dangers. Sellers of such structures and objects speak of a huge increase in demand for them. The Guardian writes about it.

Demand for bunkers is up 1,000% from 2018, said Ari Lynch, CEO of Rising S Texas. His firm sells huge, thick-walled steel boxes that assemble like Lego blocks. Sales are rising amid the coronavirus pandemic, civil unrest, climate change and armed conflict around the world, Lynch said. In February, the firm sold five bunkers in just one day at prices ranging from $70,000 to $240,000 each.

US vendors note that there are at least 5,000 public bomb shelters in Ukraine, many of which have been upgraded since 2014. But in the United States, there are few public shelter bunkers, which is why residents decide the issue of potential protection on their own. For comparison, in the Russian Federation, according to data for 2017, there were 16,270 bomb shelters.

The Guardian notes that interest in bunkers is being recorded in other countries of the world. For example, the Italian company Minus Energie, which has installed 50 bomb shelters over the past 20 years, said it received more than 500 inquiries from potential customers in the last month alone.

In Germany, underground structures have also been discussed in recent days. The country realized: today in Germany there are no public bomb shelters, except for the subway and underground parking. German media write that the conflict in Ukraine has suddenly made people realize how important it is to be prepared for emergencies. Many are already buying containers and disinfectants for water, clockwork lamps and even food for astronauts.

People are also interested in bunkers that will protect them from radiation – this is evidenced by the analysis of search queries on specialized survival sites over the past few weeks. The founder of one of these resources, John Rami, said that queries include words such as “nuclear”, “iodine”, “electromagnetic pulse”, “radiation sickness”.

However, people have been interested in the topics of survival during a major disaster before. A National Geographic poll back in 2012 found that 62% of Americans believe the world will experience a major catastrophe in less than 20 years. Another 40% are sure that stocking up or building a bomb shelter is a better decision than saving up for retirement.

The global market related to disaster preparedness and survival (sales of shelters, food kits, and so on) is expected to grow from $75.5 billion to $423 billion.

Since 2020, there has already been a sharp increase in the number of people who buy essentials, stock up and think about bomb shelters. Among them, the largest group is millennials (the generation of people born from 1981 to 1996), 77% of them admitted that they have a stock of food and things or have made them in the last 12 months.

Experts also say that the number of those who are more serious about the threat of large-scale catastrophes has recently grown. In particular, people are interested in how to survive without a constant supply of water, electricity, fuel or food. Studies show that the percentage of people who can survive more than 30 days has increased from 3.8% to 5.8% from 2017 to 2020. This number will grow.

Wartime bunkers are like tornado shelters and are only suitable for a limited period of time – to wait out something or hide, the “preppers” say. Many choose a more sustainable model: moving away from the city, growing vegetables and fruits, conserving and stockpiling “from what the earth provides”. In addition, they spend their free time hunting and creating weapons from improvised materials.
