How To Choose Bathroom and Kitchen Tile
For many homeowners looking to install tile as a flooring solution, some of the top considerations commonly weighed first are the cost, look, and wear rating of the tile.
Tile PEI Ratings
A traffic rating system was standardized by the Porcelain Enamel Institute, called the PEI Wear Rating, which measures the abrasion resistance properties of a tile. The scale goes from 1 to 5, and the higher the number, the more use the tile can endure before any physical damage occurs that would change the appearance of the tile. [4]
- PEI 1 and PEI 2 only recommended for wall application, such as a kitchen backsplash or bathroom wall tiling.
- PEI 3, Moderate Traffic – These tiles can be used on all indoor wall applications, all interior countertop applications, and all residential interior floors. This tile should not be used in commercial applications.
- PEI 4, Moderate to Heavy Traffic – These tiles can be used on all indoor wall applications, all interior countertop applications, all residential interior floors, and all light commercial applications, such as restaurants and lobbies.
- PEI 5, Heavy Traffic – These tiles can be used on all indoor wall applications, all interior countertops applications, all residential interior floors and all heavy commercial applications, such as airports, shopping malls, supermarkets, etc.
Porcelain Tile Grades
Each box of tiles has an information label where you can find the PEI rating (indicated next to an icon of a drill bit drilling into tile) for that tile. In addition to the PEI rating, you will also find the following:
- Best quality (1) – Ideal for walls and floors
- Good quality (2) – Has slight imperfections – Ideal for floors and walls
- Low quality (3) – Being the thinnest tile, it is only suitable for walls and not for floors
Tile Water Absorption Rating
In addition to hardness, wear rating, and slip resistance, the water absorption rating measures how much moister is likely to absorb into your porcelain tiles over time. If the moisture penetration gets too high, your tiles will crack.
Here are the four different tile moisture absorption ratings:
- Nonvitreous: High absorption (more than 7% of water absorbed). Not suitable for outdoor use or rooms with a lot of moisture, such as bathrooms.
- Semivitreous: Moderate absorption (3%–7% water absorbed). Not suitable for outdoor use or wet rooms, such as bathrooms.
- Vitreous: Low absorption (0.5%–3% water absorbed). Suitable for outdoor use and wet rooms, such as bathrooms.
- Impervious: Lowest absorption (less than 0.5% of water absorbed). Suitable for all interior and exterior uses.
Coefficient of Friction Floor Tile
The COF (Coefficient of Friction) Rating details the potential for slipping on the tile and is a measure of how much force is required to move something across a tile divided by the weight of the object. The range goes from 0 to 1, with a higher number indicating more friction, which makes it less slippery.
Based on the ratings, they make the following suggestions:
- COF >.50 Suitable for residential installations
- COF >.60 Suitable for commercial installations, or any floor that is frequently wet
Additional Considerations
- Frost Proof – Icon of a snowflake – If this icon is on the information label, then the tile is suitable for outdoor use where freezing conditions are common.
- Tone – Icon of a grid of various shades of gray – The presence of this icon indicates that there are different tones of color in the box of tiles and they are not all identical, and as a result more organic.
Tile Sizes
Square tiles are the standard shape you will see. While selecting a design that does not use square tiles will typically give a more exciting finish, it will take longer per square foot, and as a result, it will cost more to install. The most commonly sold tile sizes are:
- A square shape of up to 36” by 36” and as small as 4” by 4”
- A rectangular shape from 3” to 24” tall and anywhere from 24” to 48” long

(2) The sitting room, dining, and front balcony/sit-out: (30cm × 60cm) imported Virony glazed tiles;
(3) All the toilets and bathrooms: (30cm × 30cm) made in Nigeria ceramic tiles.
We are required to estimate the total cost of tiling the entire floor of the building, considering materials and labour.

The floor areas where we are going to apply the (60cm × 30cm) tiles;

Bathroom and toilet 3 = (2.0m × 0.985m) = 1.97 m2
Visitor’s toilet = (2.0m × 0.875m) = 1.75 m2

We are going to make 25mm thick screeding to receive the tiles.
From above, you can verify that the total floor area of the building = 51.148 m2 + 39.579 m2 + 8.12 m2 = 98.847 m2
Volume of mortar required = 98.847 × 0.

Using a mix ratio of 1:5
Cement required = 6 bags/m3
Sand required = 1800 kg/m3
Cement required = 14.826 bags (provide 15 bags)
Sand required = 4.447 tonnes (provide 5 tonnes)
Alternative calculation by site experience
From experience, 2 bags of cement is sufficient to complete the entire tiling process of (3.6m × 3.6m) room
Therefore;
2 bags of cement = 12.96 m2
x bags of cement = 98.847 m2
On solving;
x = 15.254 bags of cement; say 16 bags of cement
From experience, about 20 – 22 head pans of sharp sand is sufficient to complete the entire screeding process of (3.6m × 3.6m) room;
22 head pans = 22 × 0.0175 m3 = 0.385 m3
Therefore;
0.385 m3 of sand = 12.96 m2
x m3 of sand = 98.847 m2
On solving;

After laying the material, it must be thoroughly washed and cleaned of residues of grout or adhesive, which may be on the surface in large quantities. If unwashed plaque remains on the tiles, then dust and small debris will constantly accumulate in these places.
In places where there is a lot of traffic, it is best to choose a matt version of porcelain stoneware, which is less polluted and safer.
Light soiling on porcelain stoneware tiles should only be removed with a soft cloth, damp or dry. Means that include acids in their composition may also be suitable. It is strictly forbidden, when caring for the material, to use abrasive products. Even though porcelain stoneware is very durable, microcracks may remain on the surface after applying this product, which will become very noticeable over time. This rule applies more to polished surfaces, but for a longer preservation of the appearance of the coating, it must be followed. If the tile was used as a floor covering in the hallways, where there is a possibility of bringing a natural abrasive from the street – sand, then in this case, you must always have a vacuum cleaner at hand and remove dry dirt with it.

It gives additional shine to the outer surface, and can also polish defects in the form of small cracks. Such detergents contain wax, which is not washed off with ordinary water for a long time.
Dried stains from coffee, black tea, as well as wine and juice can be easily removed from the surface of the cream granite tiles using alkaline detergents. Adhesives and paints are easily washed off with solvents such as acetone. Rust stains, as well as dried cement, can be gently washed off with acid-containing products. It is necessary to work with them very carefully, since the seams between individual tiles can be severely damaged by acid.
By following the simple rules of cleaning and maintenance, it is possible to ensure that porcelain stoneware tiles will keep their external surface in excellent condition for a very long time, without changing its characteristics for the worse. When using special products for the care of materials, you must first carefully study the instructions and pay attention to all the recommendations of the manufacturer.
