Key Components of Wooden Privacy Fences 💡 Gardening | HomeInteriorz.

com

  • Key Components of a Wood Fence Built for Privacy
  • How to Match Your Fence Design with Your Home, Landscaping

Wood fence styles vary greatly. They include stock, picket, trellis, post and railroad. Some are built with privacy in mind, others serve other functions or are simply designed to enhance the landscaping aesthetic. Let’s find out which items created to share the total privacy.

The main components of a wooden fence built for privacy

Despite the variety of wooden fence styles, there have traditionally been three main components for building Privacy fencing (I say “traditionally” because most fencing companies now offer designs without rails, which is prized by homeowners who aspire to fencing that looks equally good on both sides).

And the first two of these three components form the basis for the construction of almost any wooden fence:

1. Messages:

  • These are vertical components firmly fixed to the ground. Correctly configured fence posts will contain all other components. They are the basis for your wooden fence.
  • Posts sometimes stand as high as the tops of fence panels. In other styles of wood fencing, the posts may protrude above the panels. In the latter case, adding finishes (decorative caps) is an opportunity to improve the appearance, especially for fences that perform decorative as well as practical functions.

2. Rails:

  • Rails do the basic work in wooden fences, connecting one message to another. These are your horizontal elements running parallel to the ground.
  • Top and bottom rails are almost always found in timber fence styles; many will also have medium rails.
  • These are the rails to which the panels will be attached perpendicularly.
  • In addition to the top rail, some styles have a “cover rail” that runs along the tops of the posts and tops of the panels along the entire length of the timber fence.

3. Panels:

  • Panels are the main screening element in private wooden fences, such as style in style. In the latter case, the left edge of one panel touches the right edge of its neighbor, sealing in unwanted glances. In other cases, the tongue-in-groove method is used to create a solid wall. In contrast, open wood fence styles like post and rail have no panels (thus the name, “post and rail”: that’s all there is), meaning they require far less lumber to assemble.
  • A trade-off between panels (equaling “no privacy”) and panels that are closely adjacent to each other (equaling “total privacy”) can be found in the picket style where there is space between the panels. This style works well, for example, for those who are claustrophobic and willing to sacrifice some privacy to create a more airy backyard feel.
  • Each of the individual panel designs is defined by shape, especially from above. For example, some panels end in a dot, such as picket style. But the differences don’t end here. In fact, there are many different styles of picketing, including the Gothic fence.
  • Panel designs can also be classified according to how the tops of the panels line up with each other. As an alternative to level alignments, there are also concave and convex alignments.
  • Panels are sometimes attached to obscure posts on one side or the other. Alternatively, posts can be resolved with relief on one or both sides, like in my photo.

How to match your fence design with your home, landscaping

Sometimes the choice of fence design (for example, fences with split rails) is controlled by a function. In other cases, it is only about an attractive form.

And once again, there is a happy marriage between form and function. As for the question of shape, it’s only natural to ask if a homeowner and passers-by would find a fence visually appealing. As with any hardscape, a visually appealing fence design will consider compatibility with both the style of your home and the style of your landscape.

First, some examples of fence designs that match specific house styles. Modernist homes are perfectly complemented by the elegant lines of iron and aluminum fences. In contrast, split-rail fencing, for example, goes better with ranch-style homes. Likewise, a wooden picket fence seems like a natural fit for cottages.

Wooden picket fences evoke images of English cottage gardens, which brings us to the compatibility component of landscapes.

In addition to wooden fence fences, split rail fences and other fence designs that include only posts and rails are commonly used as backdrops for suburban garden plants. Playing on their western ties, split-rail fences also pair with southwestern-themed landscapes such as cactus and succulent gardens.

By the way, even wooden picket fences, not to mention solid barrier fences, can create “microclimates” in the garden. Only a “loose and airy” fence structure, such as rail fence grating, does not create microclimates. For more on this and similar issues, see my article on landscaping the fence line.

All the variety of modern fence styles. Part two

There is a huge variety of types of fences for every budget and taste. But each fence must harmoniously fit into the landscape and match the design of the house.

Modern private houses are built according to a variety of designs, and fence styles, designed to emphasize the beauty of the estate’s architectural design, strive to keep up with the newfangled facade designs.

English style fences

White is considered both primitive and elegant, simple and elegant. Fences in the English style are able to emphasize the novelty and conciseness of the building, make the backyard more elegant and expressive.

These fences do not have to surround Victorian cottages. The English style in fencing came in handy with modern buildings lined with siding or plastered brick houses.

Indisputable advantages of fences in the English style are:

  • functionality,
  • practicality,
  • effective appearance,
  • cheapness.

White fence of different heights can be made of wooden planks, concrete elements. It can be assembled from polyurethane parts.

An English-style fence cannot be deaf and high. Therefore, in order to increase the height of the front part of the fence in the English style, the picket fence is placed on a foundation of stone or concrete. To give such a fence an English gloss, the lower part of the concrete fence is plastered and painted in the color of the facade.

Unlike picket fences in other styles, English fences are assembled from curly elements very often of different heights. The supporting pillars of such a fence are made much higher than the pieces of the span and they are turned, giving different widths.

An English-style fence reminiscent of white lace. But, unlike Russian palisades, such a fence never repeats the pattern in the architraves and carvings of the porches. To emphasize the “Englishness” of the style, woodcarving cannot be used in other elements of the estate. The carving of such a fence, of course, is simpler and more primitive than the carving that adorns Russian village houses. But the beauty of the carving in English fences is emphasized by the brightness of the paint and is more striking than the intricate patterns of the Russian style.

Japanese-style fence

If a Japanese garden is laid out on a personal plot, then there is no point in surrounding it with a chain-link or profiled sheet fence. To create a harmonious ensemble, you need to build a fence for such a Japanese-style garden.

First of all, this fence should look like wood or stone. It doesn’t matter what material will imitate wood or stone – concrete or plastic – it is important that it looks like a well-maintained material. For Japanese craftsmen, the form has always been secondary – the main thing in creating objects was the beauty of the material. Fences are no exception to this rule.

Another important point in the creation of Japanese style fence is its invisibility and harmonious combination with the existing landscape and plants. Regardless of what kind of garden you need to enclose:

  • rock garden,
  • flower garden,
  • landscape –

it is important that the fence is not the main attraction of the area.

Road side railing

Japanese style stone railings may have a wooden top. Stonework should be 2/3 of the height. On top of the masonry, simple low support pillars should be installed, to which square sections are attached. In general, the shape of a square is typical for the design of fences in the Japanese style.

Perimeter fence

Fences assembled from square blocks with trellised weave are good for fencing an area along the inner perimeter. The shape of the weave should also be square, reminiscent of shoji sliding door frames.

Internal fences

Japanese gardens are characterized by the construction of fences inside flower beds or gardens, enclosing paths on both sides. For such fences, simple hedges are installed, reminiscent of the ranch style. The difference in this case is the well-groomed material of the fence.

In general, the Japanese style can be traced in the care of the material of the fence. The tree must be treated with impregnations – spots of damage or decay are unacceptable. It is also impossible to leave elements eaten by beetles without replacement. Such parts must be replaced immediately.

Gate

It is typical for the Japanese mindset to build a gate before starting any business on earth. Therefore, the entrance to the garden, flower beds, kitchen garden or other parts of the estate must be blocked by gates. These are structures without gates, which have a purely symbolic purpose. But the absence of a gate will spoil the color, and the style will be blurred. Gates can be made of square timber. They may have a simple shape, but the top bar should protrude slightly beyond the side supports. The gate should have a wooden texture. The red-painted gates will give the estate a Chinese touch.

Rustic fence

This is usually a wooden fence. It is in perfect harmony with the buildings in the Russian style. The fence can be either blind, 2-3 meters high, or picket fence, reaching up to 1 m in height. The main rule is soft coloring. Rustic style can have lace through details, but it should be painted in blue or green. Rustic Fence is quite cheap and can be assembled from prefabricated spans in a few hours. Sometimes such fences are attached not to simple wooden supports, but to brick or stone ones.
