Outdoor digital antennas for tv: The Best Digital TV Antennas for 2022

The Best Digital TV Antennas for 2022

Cord-cutting has become synonymous with dropping cable and satellite subscriptions in favor of video streaming services. That leaves a lot of live television on the table, which you can get for free. All you need is an antenna to tune into TV stations the old-fashioned way (in high-definition with digital signals, of course). If you want to keep up with local programming or just want some more variety beyond what you can stream, an antenna connected to your TV is the way to do it. Here’s how to choose the best antenna for you.

Location Matters

Before you start shopping for an antenna, you should check what channels are available near you. AntennaWeb(Opens in a new window) has a helpful tool that lets you enter your location to see where the nearest TV stations are. It even provides a helpful map that shows distance from each station and the type of antenna you need to get a strong signal. Once you know what TV you can get near you, you can figure out the best antenna to buy.

AntennaWeb’s TV station tool categorizes nearby stations based on the sort of outdoor antenna you need to tune in. This is because indoor antennas are highly dependent on the architecture of your home and any sort of structures that can interfere with signals. This doesn’t mean the map is useless for indoor antennas, though; yellow and green stations can be tuned into with small and medium multidirectional antennas mounted outdoors, which means you can probably get a signal from them using an indoor multidirectional antenna. For farther and weaker stations that require directional antennas or a preamp, you’ll need to be able to mount it outside.

Multidirectional or Directional Antennas

Multidirectional antennas are designed to pick up signals from any direction. They’re typically flat, shaped like rectangular sheets or discs that can be easily mounted on a window. If mounted properly, they can tune into any station within range, regardless of whether the station’s positioned north, south, east, or west.

Multidirectional antennas are the most common kind of TV antenna. Almost all indoor antennas are multidirectional, and many outdoor antennas are as well. They’re easy to set up, and don’t require knowing where each station is. They aren’t perfect, though; multidirectional antennas are weaker than directional antennas, so their ranges are much shorter.

Directional antennas are, well, directional. They tend to be shaped like fins, arrows, or tubes, and need to be pointed toward the stations they’re tuned to. This means they need to be adjusted to properly get signals from stations, so you’ll need to plan carefully when mounting them. Their ranges can be much, much farther than multidirectional antennas, though, letting you tune into weaker and more distant stations if the antenna is pointing at them.

Directional antennas generally must be mounted outside, so they’re better suited for houses than apartments. Pointing toward the station isn’t nearly as effective if the antenna is blocked by a wall.

With that in mind, we’ve selected the best antennas for a variety of different scenarios.

Of course Amazon has TV antennas, though the AmazonBasics indoor TV antenna(Opens in a new window) is no longer available new. Fortunately, there are plenty of no-name $20 indoor TV antennas like this Andmei model that appear to be very similar. These are simple, flat antennas with a typical range of around 35 miles. They don’t have any frills and aren’t as guaranteed in range or quality as brand-name antennas, but at least you can get most of them with free Amazon Prime shipping.

The decidedly retro-looking Antennas Direct DB8e 8-Element Bowtie Antenna is actually a very powerful multidirectional outdoor antenna. It features two panels, each with four elements and a reflector, that can be angled toward clusters of nearby stations to get the best results. It’s still a multidirectional antenna, but a big one you can aim to get even better reception from over 70 miles away.

Mohu Leaf +

Urban environments offer many advantages: music, culture, countless coffee shops — and dozens of free, over-the-air TV broadcasts. The trouble is pulling them in cleanly when there’s so much other interference to contend with — another hallmark of most cities. The Winegard Elite 7550 does an outstanding job doing just that, collecting scores of stations, cleanly and clearly. It’s one of the best TV antennas we’ve reviewed.

The Winegard Elite has a list price of $160, much more expensive than the proliferation of $10 indoor models. But if you’re having difficulty getting local stations you want — or you just want better, more consistent reception — the price tag, which is less than a  month’s subscription to many cable carriers, is worth every penny.

Design: Rooftop-Ready

Winegard touts the unique design of the Elite 7550 as more attractive than typical outdoor antennas. However, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. With its multiple metal-bar protuberances and hourglass- shaped plastic facade, the Elite is unlikely to garner accolades for its appearance.

What counts, fortunately, are its features. The antenna includes an LTE filter the company says is specifically designed to fight interference from cell towers. It also has a low-noise preamp embedded in the antenna and an in-line amp with a 3-foot USB power cable and adapter. It’s all intended to clean up what can be less than ideal incoming HDTV signals.

Some cord-cutters may find the installation process a little intimidating, but for the most part it’s pretty straightforward. One primary two-part antenna bar has to be screwed onto the main chassis, with the remaining flat bars sliding and snapping into place across the back of the antenna. Also included is a mounting pole and foot bracket for securing it to a roof or other exterior structure.

If you’re having difficulty getting the local stations you want, the Winegard Elite 7550 is worth every penny.

Unfortunately, we had a couple of misgivings about the Elite’s construction. The flat metal components are not as secure as we’d like, and they can rattle in the wind or a storm (which will only be a distraction if it’s situated near a window). More critical, the bracket that bolts onto the pole and then to a roof is plastic, not metal. We didn’t have a lot of confidence that such a design would withstand harsh Northeast winters.

MORE: Best Indoor HDTV Antennas for Cord Cutters

An adjustable wrench and a couple of screwdrivers are all the tools you’ll need to put it together. To mount it to a roof or external structure, you’ll also need a drill and supporting screws. Incidentally, Winegard doesn’t include the necessary coaxial cable (with a weatherproof connector) that you’ll need to connect it to your TV. A 50-foot roll of cable costs less than $15.

Performance: Stellar Reception

To test the Winegard Elite 7550, we used the same Samsung KS9000 4K TV and New York City location that we employ to test all the HDTV antennas. The only difference was that we installed it outside, although it still faced the challenge of taller multistory buildings surrounding our location.

An initial scan yielded 73 channels, far more than any indoor antenna we have ever tested. Typically, initial scans include stations that after hours of viewing turn out to be riddled with picture artifacts and thus deemed unwatchable. Not so with the Winegard Elite.

MORE: The Best Streaming Video Services for Cord Cutters

It managed to tune in each and every  station that registered in the initial scan. From Dr. Phil on the local CBS affiliate to soap operas on the local ABC channel, the picture was always crisp and consistently clean.

An initial scan turned out 73 channels, far more than any indoor antenna we have ever tested.

Even subchannels broadcasting standard definition 480p programming looked better than what we typically see viewing retro shows like I Dream of Jeannie and Hill Street Blues. Shopping channels and more distant Korean and Chinese language stations also came in cleanly.

Bottom Line

A more-than-able antenna, the Winegard Elite 7550 does a great job doing what it’s supposed to do: receiving as many local TV broadcasts as possible. We just wish some of the antenna’s components were sturdier and that the company threw in a roll of coaxial cable to at least get you started.

Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro: Specs

Range: 65 Miles
Channels Received: 42
Amplified: Yes
1080p Reception: Yes
Cable Length: 16 Feet
Size: 12 x 21.5 inches

Displaying better than average reception skills, the Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro is solid indoor TV antenna that should suit most metro and suburban situations. Even though it commands a price premium over some other flat antennas, this amplified model does a better job than some of the best TV antennas at capturing stations.

There are plenty of smaller flat models, such as the one seen in our RCA ANT3ME review, but they generally pull in fewer over-the-air stations. The catch is that the Mohu Leaf Supreme is nearly twice the width of typical flat indoor antennas like the RCA model, and it leverages that wider wingspan to pull in more channels. So many shoppers may find the decision here is based as much on design as performance.

Black on one side and white on the other, the Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro is the largest indoor model the company currently sells.

  • Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro HDTV Antenna (Black LED) at Amazon for $89.99

As mentioned earlier, measuring 12 x 21.5 inches, it’s roughly double the breadth of other flat, plastic models. The company includes Velcro-style stick-ons and push pins for window or wall mounting.

It can’t be put in a table-top stand, but its coaxial cable is detachable, should you need to place it farther away from the set than the included 16-foot cable allows. The amplifier, built into the base of the attachment, shows signal strength via 4 LEDs.

Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro review: Setup

The antenna comes with a coaxial cable to connect to your TV and a USB power cable for the built-in amplifier, but no AC power plug. So you can plug it into a powered USB port on your TV or into a USB power adapter of your own to give the signals an extra boost. The USB power cord is only about 3 feet long, which may mean you’ll need an extension to reach the powered port on a large screen TV or a power brick plugged into a wall outlet. (To reach our standard test position, we needed to use a USB extension cable.)

One annoyance about setup, the Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro has to be partially rolled up to fit into its retail box. Consequently, to unfurl it properly we had to flatten it out with weights for 24 hours before we could test it.

Before you settle on a permanent spot for the Mohu Supreme or make a decision on what type of antenna you may need, we recommend checking what local over-the-air stations are available in your area by visiting a site such as Antennaweb.org. By searching your zip code you can get a list and a map of the location of local broadcast towers.

Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro review: Performance

According to Mohu, the Leaf Supreme Pro’s first-stage amplification is designed to reduce pixelation and picture distortion that often makes some marginal stations unwatchable. We found this was generally the case, clearing up some recalcitrant channels and making tuning in stations considerably less frustrating.

Using the amplifier, the Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro registered 42 channels in initial scans. That’s a better than average result — the amplified RCA ANT3ME pulled in 33 watchable stations, for example — but more impressive was the fact that all of those stations came in clearly. Usually a review of all the channels reveals several that are not actually viewable due to picture or sound breakups. Still, the Leaf Supreme Pro could not capture the challenging CBS affiliate at the bottom of the dial or the local Fox affiliate.

The amplifier also seemed to help. Consider that without the amplifier plugged in, only 36 channels were found in our tests. Most of what was missed were popular Spanish language stations near the top of the dial in New York City.

Compared to other flat antennas, the Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro performed well. The $89 Antop HD Smart Antenna SBS-301 is a smaller flat amplified antenna, but it only received 33 channels, for example, and this larger model did better than Mohu’s own less-expensive $65 Mohu Leaf 50 Indoor Amplified HDTV Antenna, which only pulled in 27 stations in our tests.

Are there better performers? Most certainly, but those antennas generally are indoor/outdoor models that cost more, such as the $100 Winegard Elite 7550 Outdoor HDTV Antenna, which received 73 stations in our tests, and the $120 Antop AT-800SBS HD Smart Panel Antenna, which captured 68 channels.

Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro: Verdict

If you’ve got the wall space or can hide it behind a bookcase or your TV, the Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro is a very good choice for capturing TV broadcasts, especially in suburban locations. It’s easy to set up and only $20 to $30 more than many comparable indoor antennas.

The excellent reception means that it’s a step up from other amplified antennas, including favorites from our best TV antennas list, like the Mohu Arc Pro and the Antop HD Smart Antenna SBS-301. Bottom line: Consider upgrading to the Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro, particularly if a smaller model didn’t do the trick.

The best TV antennas: Tested for real-world signal strength

Cable and satellite TV subscriptions are becoming ever more expensive, so more and more homes are ditching pay TV in favor of free, over-the-air broadcasts. Digital TV typically provides between 20 and 60 channels depending on where you live, and can save you at least $1,000 a year, based on a typical pay TV subscription.

Folks who do are often surprised by the higher image quality they get from broadcast TV. That’s because cable and satellite services compress the video signal in order to reduce the bandwidth required to stream it to your home, all so they can cram in more of the channels you probably never watch anyway.

So, cut that cable, ditch that dish, and join the growing number of American households that are free from monthly bills for TV service.

Channel Master Flatenna 35 — Best budget-priced indoor TV antenna

Pros

  • Very low price
  • Well made
  • U. S.-based customer support

Cons

  • Won’t do much for your living-room décor

If you live close enough to the broadcast towers for the stations you want to watch, a less-expensive non-amplified antenna like the Channel Master Flatenna might be all you need to cut the cord. At the time of this review, we found that Channel Master itself was offering the best price on this antenna: Just $10 plus $7.50 for shipping.

Do I need a TV antenna?

Putting up a TV antenna is one of the best steps you can take toward breaking your reliance on pay TV and saving hundreds of dollars a year. Most areas of the U.S. have access to between 50 and 100 TV stations that broadcast over the air for free.

As a bonus, they’ll make your big-screen TV shine. Over-the-air TV signals are typically compressed less than cable or satellite broadcasts, so pictures will appear either the same quality or better. All the major broadcast networks now transmit in high-definition, and in some areas, broadcasts using the new ATSC 3.0 standard–aka NextGen TV–are also available.

Select the “Signal Search Map” and either zoom in on the map to your house or try entering the address in the search box. I have mixed results with the search box so zooming might be better. Once your house is in the center of the map, click the “Move Pushpin to Center of Map View” button beneath the map.

Click “Go” and you’ll get something like this in return:

How to pick the right TV antenna for your needs

To find the right antenna for you, consider these criteria:

  • Which channels are available where you live (we’ll show you how to do that shortly)
  • Choose which channels you want to watch
  • Figure out which type of antenna you need
  • Select the antenna

As a rule of thumb, indoor antennas are suitable for areas with strong or very strong signals, attic/outdoor antennas work in areas of medium signal strength, and larger outdoor antennas are best for areas surrounded by weak signals.

Point your browser to the website Rabbit Ears to find the broadcast channels available where you live. This service pairs the FCC’s broadcast TV database with topographical maps to give you a detailed estimation of which signals will reach your house and how strong those signals will be.

A screenshot of the Rabbit Ears website showing television reception in Portland, OR.

Michael Brown/Foundry

The table above above looks complicated, but it’s really not. The strongest signals are at the top and weakest at the bottom. Keep this page open in a separate browser tab as we move to the next step.

The table lists predicted signal level at your home from strongest (at the top) to weakest (at the bottom). The first number shows the channel number advertised on air and the number in brackets is the actual channel number (for more on this, read on). Then are details of the TV network, station name and distance from the transmitter. Reception depends a lot on local conditions, but whatever the environment, it starts getting difficult above 50-75 miles.

The list also includes the direction of the transmitter, which is important. Not all TV signals you want will necessarily come from the same place!

The Winegard Elite 7550 can be installed on a rooftop outdoors or inside your attic, if your home has one.

Martyn Williams/Foundry

Predicting which antenna will work with certainty is almost impossible. The information garnered from sites like Rabbit Ears will provide a strong indication of what should work, but there are other variables at work.

In some areas, especially in cities or areas with lots of hills, signals can bounce off obstacles like buildings and cause interference, trees can grow leaves in the spring and block stations you got fine in the winter, and atmospheric conditions can alter the way signals reach your house.

Moving an antenna just a little to one side or up and down a window can have a big effect on reception. If you’re putting up an external antenna, one side of your roof might bring in nothing while the other side provides perfect reception.

Which channels do I want to watch?

Your next step is to figure out which stations you want to watch. After all, there’s no point wasting time trying to get weak stations if all your favorite shows are on strong ones.

You can check a TV listing guide to see everything that’s on the air in your local area and make a list of which stations you want to watch. You’ll probably need to enter your zip code and be sure to choose “antenna” or “over the air” as your TV provider in the online program guide, so you don’t get cable channels mixed in.

Once you’ve made your list, examine the Rabbit Ears results to find the channels you want to watch. Write down the number in parenthesis, which is the “real channel,” the “Direction (true),” and the color (green, yellow, or red). The colors will inform you if an indoor antenna will be sufficient, or if you’ll need an attic or roof-mounted model to pull them in.

It’s important to remember than an indoor antenna is always going to be a compromise. You will always get better results with an outdoor antenna.

Indoor antennas–like our current favorite low-priced antenna (the Channel Master Flatenna 35) and our favorite amplified antenna (the Winegard FlatWave Amped)–are typically flat, so they’re easy to set up, usually by hanging them in a window on the side of the house facing the transmitter. Some look different but the principle is the same: Install them in a favorable location.

Indoor antennas are typically fine for all the strong local channels, but if you want channels that are weaker or further away, you might need to go larger and put an antenna in your attic space or on your roof. For that, we recommend the Antennas Direct DB8e. If you don’t want to climb onto your roof, and you have an attic, the Winegard Elite 7550 can be installed either in your attic or on your roof. The higher you can go with an antenna–and the fewer line-of-sight obstacles to the broadcast towers you’re looking to tune to–the better your TV reception will be.

This TV antenna has a motorized rotator attached to its mast, which you can use to turn the antenna to point it in the direction of the broadcast tower whose signals you want to tune in.

Martyn Williams/Foundry

If you install your antenna in the attic, you’ll probably get slightly less signal than if it was on the roof because it’s an enclosed space, but it might be enough to get stable TV reception. If you hate the look of an outdoor antenna, then experiment. An attic-mounted antenna will also be easier to maintain.

The direction of the TV transmitter tower is also important. If you’re using an indoor antenna, you’ll want to put it in a window facing that direction. If you’re using an outdoor antenna, it should be pointed in that direction. As signals get weaker, going from green to yellow to gray, the direction becomes more important. If you want to tune in weaker stations from towers in different directions, you’ll probably need an antenna rotator. This motorized device will turn the antenna so that it’s oriented to pull in those weaker signals when you want to watch them.

Knowing the real channel number will help you select an antenna. TV broadcasting in North America is spread across three frequency bands: VHF-Low (channels 2 through 6), VHF-High (channels 7 through 13), and UHF (channels 14 through 51). Because of the different frequencies in use, antennas are designed to cover one, two, or three bands. Not every antenna covers them all.

What type of cable do I need for a TV antenna?

A length of coaxial cable cut and ready for a connector to be attached.

Martyn Williams/Foundry

The connection from your antenna to your TV is every bit as important as the antenna itself. You need a high-quality coaxial cable (“coax” for short) for the job. Coax has a center wire that carries the signal and is surrounded by a plastic insulator. An outer braid shields the center cable from interference, and an outer sheath protects the cable from the elements.

If you’re ditching satellite for over-the-air TV, you can probably use the existing coaxial cable from the satellite dish, but if it doesn’t work, be prepared to buy and run new coax. Make the cable a single run if possible because each time you connect shorter cables together using barrel connectors, a little signal is lost. The most common type of coax cable for TV is called RG-6.

How we test TV antennas

TechHive tests TV antennas in a location in the Washington, D.C. metro area. (Until 2020, we tested in the San Francisco Bay Area, so you might see references to that location in older reviews). The D.C. location receives strong signals from local TV stations, but presents several challenges: There are a large number of trees around to influence reception; some of the independent D.C. TV stations are weak and difficult to receive; and with a good antenna, distant reception of Baltimore market stations is possible.

Indoor antennas are tested indoors and outdoor antennas outdoors. Each time we test a new antenna, we retest our current top pick to ensure a fair benchmark.

We use a set-top box to scan for channels and record the number of RF channels received by each antenna and their strength. Each RF channel carries a number of digital stations, but the number is different per channel and can change, so digital stations received isn’t as useful a measurement. We scan several times and adjust the direction of the antenna on some rescans.

Our picks are the antennas that receive the largest number of stations with the highest signal level in both the UHF (channels 14 through 51) and VHF-High (channels 7 through 13) bands, which are the primary TV broadcast bands.

10 Best Outdoor TV Antenna Reviews in 2022

In case you are experiencing pixelated image quality on your TV, and your current antenna does not have sufficient reception power. Then, it’s highly essential to replace the outdoor TV antenna with a new one. The modern antennas aren’t just powerful, but they also come with support for HD channels and offer a better overall experience.

Hence, if you are interested in buying one, you can check out our list of the best outdoor TV antennas that we have created by handpicking the best options from the market. But, before you think of spending your money on an outdoor antenna, make sure to check for a few things like:

  • Maximum Range: If you live on the outskirts, or far away from the TV station, you should definitely check the maximum range of the antenna first. It is usually mentioned in terms of miles. So, if the max range of the antenna is more, then it’ll be able to receive signals from farther distances so you can access more channels on your TV.
  • Impedance: When it comes to impedance, unlike the standard antennas that have 300 Ohm impedance, most modern antennas have only 75 Ohm impedance because of the presence of a coaxial cable. The lesser the impedance, the faster will be the electrical transmission from your antenna to your TV.
  • Gain: To know about the performance of an antenna, an individual can check the gain value. The gain of the antenna is generally mentioned in terms of decibels. And, the more the gain is, the better will be the signal reception power of that antenna. Thus, if you are looking for a powerful antenna, choose the one with high gain.

In case you want to know more about outdoor TV antennas and are curious to know more such facts, we have mentioned a detailed buying guide later in this article. The buying guide contains all the essential information about outdoor antennas that a new buyer should know about. Thus, if you read the “Buying Guide” until the end, it’ll be a lot easier for you to make your final decision and pick the right outdoor antenna from the list.

Buying Guide for the Best Outdoor TV Antenna

If you are not much aware of the features that you should be checking before buying a new outdoor TV antenna from the market. Then, sit back and read this buying guide until the end. We will be discussing all the major factors that you should check in an outdoor TV antenna before spending your money on it.

There are many crucial factors that most people don’t pay much attention to. Hence, we don’t want our readers to make such mistakes and end up buying the wrong product. In the list above, we have already mentioned some of the best outdoor TV antenna options. Still, we recommend everyone to at least read this buying guide once as it’s going to be a lot helpful for everyone.

1. Max Range

First of all, you should be checking the maximum range of the antenna. If you live in the outskirts, rural or suburban areas, there are high chances that your TV is struggling to receive the signals. To correct that, you will need to buy an outdoor TV antenna that has a good enough signal reception range. In the list above, we have mentioned several good options that have a good range of up to 150-200 Miles. In case you are living in the urban areas, there’s not much need to spend your money on a high range antenna, as you can easily receive signals with other antennas having 70-80 miles range also.

2. Gain

Apart from the signal reception range, checking for the gain of the antenna is quite an important task before buying one. The gain of an antenna is measured in terms of decibels. Basically, if the gain of the antenna is high, it means that the antenna is focussing more in a particular direction.

That said, high gain antennas are able to receive good signals even from distant stations. One thing to keep in mind is that some antennas also come with adjustable gain settings. If you put the gain to max, the antenna will focus more in a particular direction, hence make sure the antenna is aiming right, otherwise, the antenna won’t be able to catch signals properly.

3. Impedance

Impedance is generally measured in Ohms, and it’s just like cable resistance. The lower the impedance, the faster the transmission will occur from your Antenna to your TV. That being said, most of the modern antennas that use coaxial cables have 75 Ohm impedance which is quite a lot better than standard antennas that have 300 Ohm impedance. As a result, most modern antennas are able to support Full HD channels since the transmission rate offered by coaxial cables is good due to low impedance.

4. Support for Multiple TVs

If you have multiple televisions at home, there are several good outdoor antenna options available in the list above that come with support for multiple TVs. Although most outdoor TV antennas that operate using coaxial cable can be used to transmit signals to multiple TVs using a coaxial splitter. But, using a splitter may add noise to the signal and the quality won’t be the same. However, the antennas which support multiple TVs without the need for a splitter are capable of providing lossless quality transmission to multiple TVs.

5. Build Quality

Since we are talking about outdoor TV antennas here, checking the build quality becomes one of the most important tasks for you. The antennas are generally installed on the roof, so you should make sure that the antenna is durable enough to survive in adverse weather conditions such as heavy winds, rains, etc. Thus, make sure the antenna is built from high-grade materials and has a weather-resistant design.

6. Warranty

Lastly, don’t forget to check for the warranty information. Since the outdoor antennas have to go through bad weather conditions as well, there is a possibility that some parts may get damaged accidentally. So, it’s highly important that the antenna should have a warranty so that you can get it replaced by the brand for no extra cost. While most of the outdoor TV antennas on the list have a 1 year long warranty. There are some good options which have a lifetime warranty as well.

FAQs about Outdoor TV Antennas:

1. Can we use multiple TVs with the same antenna?

Ans. Yes, you can use multiple TVs with the same antenna. However, if you are using a splitter to split up the signals, keep in mind that with each split, you are going to add about 1-3 dB of noise in the signal. So, the more you split up the signal, the signal will lose its strength and will start to provide bad picture quality eventually. Hence, it’s better to use multiple TVs with the antennas that come with support for multiple TVs without needing a splitter.

2. Are 75 Ohm antennas better?

Ans. In general, antennas have standard 300 Ohm impedance, but with the involvement of coaxial cables in the new generation antennas, the impedance has dropped to 75 Ohms. As a result, the electrical transmission of the signals from the Antenna to TV has become faster. Thus, 75 Ohm antennas are quite a lot better than the standard antennas.

3. What is the average lifespan of an outdoor antenna?

Ans. Unlike older generation antennas, the ones that are built these days have quite a robust construction. Moreover, the newer antennas are designed in a way so that they can tackle the harsh weather conditions. So, depending on such factors, an average outdoor antenna lasts for about roughly 10-15 years without facing any technical issues.

Conclusion:

Alright! That is it for this article. We hope you have checked out all the listed outdoor antennas in the list above. Since we have covered the features of all the outdoor TV antennas along with their pros and cons, you will be able to compare them very easily.

Hence, choosing the best antenna option from the list isn’t a big deal. However, if you still face some confusion, you can also take help from the buying guide as we have mentioned almost everything about the outdoor antennas there. For those of you who are not able to make their final decision, feel free to pick one from our personal recommendations:

  • One of our favorite antenna options from the list is the PBD WA-2608 Digital Amplified Outdoor HDTV Antenna. In fact, it’s completely weather resistant and also comes with a built-in 360-degree motor rotor, so installing and adjusting the antenna is not at all a hard task. On top of that, the installation is fairly simple as well as it also has a weather-resistant design. Thus, it’s a highly durable and affordable choice for you. Not only that, it’s ideal for most rural and suburban areas, and also comes with a lifetime warranty.

Best TV Antenna for 2022

Subscription TV can be quite expensive, no matter where you get it. A live TV streaming service, a satellite dish or a cable connection can provide you with hundreds of channels to watch. But if you’re someone who doesn’t watch much TV or just wants to save some money, it might be a good idea to finally cut the cord.

A TV antenna can help with that. Yep, TV antennas still exist, and if you’re located in a city apartment or somewhere else with a good signal, you’re just one antenna away from free access to popular TV shows, movies, specials and sports.

An over-the-air, or OTA, antenna is great for live events such as sports and the evening news. Depending on where you live and your signal reception capabilities, you can watch anything on NBC, Fox, ABC, CBS, PBS and some other channels like MyNetworkTV and The CW. While a roof-mounted television antenna or outdoor TV antenna would do the job, you can add an indoor antenna to your TV’s built-in tuner for as little as $20 shipped.

If you’re really serious about cutting the cord, check out our Streaming TV Insider for even more tips.

Sarah Tew/CNET

The downside is that in some places, the TV signal of some channels is spotty or nonexistent due to either your proximity, or lack thereof, to a broadcast tower or to obstructions that break up the signal.

Unlike a live TV streaming service, OTA TV is usually restricted to a single television, and the broadcast signal from an OTA TV antenna won’t work on phones or other devices. Unless, that is, you kick it up a notch with an OTA DVR that has networking capabilities.

Channel Master Flatenna 35/Duo

Best TV antenna overall

Dec 2016

  • Detachable coaxial cable? Yes
  • Number of channels: 50 in Manhattan, 61 in New Jersey
  • Number of watchable channels: 9 out of 13 checked, both locations

The Flatenna 35 has been upgraded with a removable antenna since our original test. It seems that signal performance has also improved — it’s now the best of our seven models at pulling in channels, beating our previous recommendation, the Antennas Direct ClearStream Eclipse. This Flat antenna is great for those who are not capable of installing an outdoor antenna.

And yes, the best TV antenna is just $20 (including shipping) from Channel Master’s website. (It can be called either the Flatenna 35 or Duo depending on where you buy it from.) Best TV channels reception and low price? We have a winner.

Antennas Direct ClearStream Eclipse

Best TV antenna for power users

  • Detachable coaxial cable? Yes
  • Number of channels: 39 in Manhattan, 65 in New Jersey
  • Number of watchable channels: 9 out of 13 checked, both locations

Maybe you’ve tried the Flatenna with so-so results and want to give it another shot. The Antennas Direct Eclipse won our original comparison and performed very well again this time around at receiving a broadcast signal for many TV channels.

With its ankh-shaped and multidirectional reversible compact design, the ClearStream antenna is definitely unique. This multi-directional antenna comes with sticky tabs for attaching it to your window, which is handy. And if you need more signal oomph, there’s a $20 antenna amplifier available as well.

The U Must Have Amplified HD Digital TV Antenna.

Sarah Tew/CNET

  • 1byOne Indoor Amplified HDTV Antenna: The 1byOne is one of two antennas in this list with a nonremovable coax cable, and at only 10 feet long, it may not work in some rooms where it cannot pick up a very weak signal. The black plastic feels a little cheap compared with the others, though the HD antenna model does come with a powered gain amplifier. It was toward the bottom of the pack in terms of signal performance, but this indoor HDTV antenna was the only television antenna to pick up CBS from a TV tower at our Manhattan location (see below for details). It is a long-range antenna that receives TV signals up to 200 miles. The current price is cheaper than the others, but in our book the Channel Master Flatenna is the better bet.
  • U Must Have Amplified HD Digital TV Antenna: The U Must Have amplified antenna comes with a sticky pad on the back and a relatively long, though nonremovable, lead at 18 feet. The included amplifier gives the antenna some flexibility and the product feels more solidly made overall than the 1byOne, though they performed similarly.

How we test TV antennas

We tested seven different indoor antennas with prices ranging from $10 to $90 (all much less than the most basic cable TV). The best TV antennas were able to pull in more channels than the others and delivered stronger, clearer TV signals, even on “problem” channels. Here are the seven TV antennas we originally looked at:

  • Channel Master Flatenna 35 ($20)
  • AmazonBasics Ultra Thin Indoor TV Antenna ($20, out of stock)
  • 1byOne Upgraded Digital Amplified Indoor HD TV Antenna ($21)
  • Antennas Direct ClearStream Eclipse ($45)
  • Mohu ReLeaf ($30, discontinued)
  • Channel Master Smartenna Plus ($49, discontinued)
  • U Must Have Amplified High Definition Digital TV Antenna ($29)

Much like real estate, how well a TV antenna works is based on location, location and location.

We tested the antennas in two main locations: in midtown Manhattan just a half-mile from the broadcast antennas on the Empire State Building — albeit obscured by other buildings — and in suburban New Jersey, 9 miles from the closest broadcast towers. Depending on your location, you might receive broadcasts from multiple antennas. Hills or large buildings in the way will have an effect on frequency range and reception of TV channels.

We situated each antenna in the same spot and connected it to the Channel Master DVR Plus, which gives signal strength data as well as a total channel count. We used two different metrics to determine which TV antenna performed best. The first was a raw measure of the number of channels it could detect, while the second involved a number of predetermined “problem channels.” For these, we consulted a list of channels culled from various forums, for both testing areas, and gauged how well the antennas pulled in each channel.

Amazon Fire TV Recast

+5 more
See all photos

Our list of “problem” channels in Manhattan was WABC 7.1 (ABC), WNET 13.1 (PBS), WPIX 11.1 (CW — Manhattan only) and WNJB 58.1 (PBS — NJ only). In addition we added popular channels CBS 2.1, WNBC 4 (NBC), and WNYW 5 (Fox).

While the results will vary depending on where you live and how far you are from TV towers, we found that the best-performing models received more of the most popular channels as well as local channels and additional radio broadcasts and Spanish-language stations.

Most of the TV antennas are based on the same rectangular design, but there was one important consideration: the cable. Did the antenna have a long, high-performance coaxial cable or, even better, a detachable one? You’ll be sticking one of these in your window, which could be a long way from your TV, so longer is better.

It’s worth noting that some of these antennas — the 1byOne and the Channel Master Smartenna Plus — include gain-boosting amplifiers. While the 1byOne will also work without the amp attached, the Channel Master won’t. Based on our experiences in a number of locations, however, amplifiers offer a wildly unpredictable signal strength benefit. If you can’t get TV reception with an indoor antenna, a gain amp may not actually help you, and in other cases, it could make your reception worse by overloading channels that already have a strong signal.

Several antennas in our list include a powered amplifier, but use thoughtfully, as these may actually make a strong signal worse.

TV Antenna FAQs

Do I need an antenna for a smart TV?

The main difference between a television and a monitor is that a TV has an OTA tuner onboard, even if most people never use it. The advent of smart TV means that cord-cutters can now connect directly to the internet and get on-demand streaming as well as live TV. This is usually at extra cost, while an antenna can receive signals without an internet connection. So, no, you don’t need an antenna to use smart TV, but the two do complement each other very well.

Do indoor antennas really work?

Depending on where you live, an indoor antenna can work really well, or not at all. If you live in the middle of a city, it’s likely you’re very close to a broadcast antenna. However, if you live a little further out then you may not be receiving the strongest signals and checking digital TV coverage maps first may help you somewhat.

Correspondingly, if you do live in a poor coverage area, with weak signals, an indoor antenna may not be for you. We tried using the antennas at a semi-urban location in New York State’s Hudson Valley miles from the city and none of them worked at all, even the signal-boosting Smartenna. That’s why it’s best to test the signal strength waters with a cheap antenna first, instead of spending a hundred bucks on something that might not work in your location.

Will my antenna work with ATSC 3.0 or NextGen TV?

ATSC 3.0, also known as NextGen TV, is the next evolution of OTA broadcasts, and it promises higher resolutions, enhanced audio and interactivity. While these NextGen TV features are still a ways off — in 2022 the service is in the process of rolling out — the good news is that it’s designed to be backwards compatible with the existing ATSC. So yes, your existing antenna will still work, though you will need an ATSC 3.0 compatible tuner or TV, and an active internet connection for any interactive or on-demand features.

How do you install an indoor antenna?

Most contemporary antennas include some form of adhesive to attach them to your wall or window. If for some reason they lack this option you could try packing tape or poster putty instead.

When you install it, you will definitely need to experiment with the placement. A wall may actually be better than a window, depending on the orientation of your living area. Also, if possible, keep the antenna away from magnetic metals such as security bars or the like since they can interfere with your signal strength.

If you buy a model with a short, captive lead like the 1byOne, be aware that you may need to buy a male-female extension lead, and more coaxial cable, to get it to reach your equipment. For more on installing an antenna check out our complete guide and video.

The root of the difficulties with TV reception often lies in the antenna

Signalmen found such an antenna from a dinner plug at a viewer who complained about the loss of the signal. After replacing the receiving antenna, the problems disappeared.

06/29/2020, /=RO=/ 98% of viewers’ problems with digital terrestrial TV are related to user equipment or reception conditions: the location of the house, the relief, buildings, and in the summer also with blossoming foliage. The root of the difficulty with TV reception is often the antenna. Based on the hotline data, RTRS specialists compiled the Top 5 problems for viewers and offer life hacks to solve them.

1. Mustaches and dryers, or unsuitable antenna.

“The first multiplex doesn’t work, the second is noisy” is how many complaints about the hotline begin. The first step is to understand what kind of antenna the viewer has. Typical response: “I don’t know what kind of antenna I have. It hangs very high on a pine tree, and they put it up with my mother many years ago.

A bit of theory. Digital terrestrial television shows without interference, it is either in excellent quality, or it is not at all. Therefore, in cases where the picture on the screen is either clear or completely disappears, the diagnosis is clear: the antenna receives the signal at the limit of its capabilities. And any change in reception conditions – blossoming leaves, rain, a car passing by – changes the signal to such a level that its power for this antenna is no longer enough. In analog television, interference would have gone on the screen. The “digit” disappears completely. The conclusion is simple: you need to choose an antenna suitable for your place so that it gives the TV or set-top box a signal of sufficient power.

Antennas can be indoor or outdoor. The room is located in the apartment and is suitable if the TV tower is located in direct line of sight. If the distance to the tower is more than 10 km, an external one is needed. It is installed on a balcony, facade or roof.

According to the received frequencies, antennas are divided into meter (analog channels), decimeter (digital channels) and all-wave (“analogue” and “digit”). By 2019, more than 12 million Russians received “analogue” in the meter range: for example, on antennas such as “mustache” or “polka” (“dryer”). They are ineffective for receiving “numbers”. Those who did not have time to update their equipment and tried to tune the “digit” on a new receiver with an old antenna faced the same periodic loss of TV signal. The old antenna catches something, but not always. The problem is solved only by replacing the antenna with a decimeter one. The most suitable type is “Christmas tree”.

Less commonly, reception difficulties are due to overamplification of the signal. According to the type of amplification, active antennas (with an amplifier) and passive ones (without it) are distinguished. Excessive gain causes noise. Therefore, you should not use an active antenna near the tower. The amplifier is needed in the country, in the countryside, at a great distance from the tower in the city.

If the antenna type is not suitable for the reception conditions, it is better to replace it.

2. “Wrong turn”, or incorrect antenna orientation.

A poor signal problem can be caused by the receiving antenna looking in the wrong direction. A viewer from Zheleznovodsk complained about short interruptions and signal freezes. It turned out that the antenna was turned in the opposite direction from the city TV tower. Because of this, the signal level was weak, and the error rate, on the contrary, was high. The same problem – the slightest change in reception conditions, and the signal disappears. Turning the antenna solved the problem. And such cases occur regularly.

Interactive map on the rtrs.rf website will help you orient the antenna to the nearest tower. After connecting to a TV (or set-top box) with a cable, monitor the signal strength and quality indicators on the TV screen. Slowly rotate the antenna around its axis. Focus on the scale of the intensity and quality of the TV signal. Achieve the best performance: signal level – at least 60%, quality – 100%.

Sometimes “wrong turn” does not lead to failures, but deprives local news. A viewer from the village of Pizhma in Mari El directed the antenna towards Sanchursk (Kirov region) and received Kirov news on the air. To watch local Mari programs, he had to turn the antenna towards Yoshkar-Ola.

3. “Know her place”, or wrong antenna placement.

“Multiplex reception rates vary from 0% to 75%,” writes a viewer. It turned out that his private house is located 50 meters from a dense forest, and the antenna is installed at a level of six meters from the ground.

Raising the antenna higher often solves reception problems. At great distances from the TV tower and near natural barriers, the recommended antenna height is 10 meters from ground level.

Do not install the antenna in the attic under a metal roof: this shielding surface prevents the signal from passing through.

In the case of an indoor antenna, the window sill that faces the tower is best suited. If there is no such window, it is recommended to receive the reflected signal. For example, point the antenna at the wall of a neighboring house. Sometimes you have to move the antenna to another room.

4. Spoons, forks and beer cans, or about the shortcomings of homemade antennas.

A resident of the village of Erofey Pavlovich, Amur Region, managed to receive TV on a tablespoon, but the signal kept disappearing.

Homemade items are also made from aluminum table forks, refrigerator rear grills, combustion engine head gaskets, welding electrodes, fishing nets, gymnastic hoops, and even beer cans.

Successful models are found, but rarely, as they require sufficient knowledge in the field of physics and radio engineering. For reliable reception of a TV signal, it is recommended to receive the signal not “on a wire”, but on a factory certified antenna.

5. Take care of the cable again, or why it is important to check connections.

If the signal is lost, it is worth checking the cable connections between the antenna and the receiver. There is a known case when a viewer clamped an antenna cable with a bag of potatoes. The cable is disconnected from the TV and the signal is gone. A viewer discovered this after a week without TV.

The denser the cable sheath and the thicker the core, the stronger the cable.

Intermittent TV reception may be caused by a damaged – oxidized – connector on the TV to which the antenna cable is connected. If you clean the connections and replace the connector, TV reception will be restored.

In case of problems with TV reception, it is recommended to check the place where the antenna cable is connected to the outdoor antenna installed on the roof of the house. There, the connector is no less prone to oxidation.

Questions and Answers

What kind of antenna do you need for digital TV?

There are no special features here, the usual decimeter, internal or external is suitable. A qualitative result can be obtained under the following conditions:

  • The most important thing is the decimeter broadcasting range. Meter waves are not suitable for DVB-T2.
  • In the countryside and in the countryside, as well as on the edge of the city, you will need active antennas with an amplifier. If we are talking about housing, which is located no further than 25 km. TV tower, no amplifiers needed.
  • It happens that the house is in the zone of interference from mobile towers. If the signal is noisy, an additional filter is purchased to protect against the LTE pulse.
  • When connecting one TV, a passive antenna will do. If there are several TV receivers in the house, it is better to buy products with amplifiers for digital television. Alternatively, buy it separately.

When buying a device, be sure to specify the connection source. There are categories of devices that do not have a separate power supply, but they need it to work. Such devices are suitable only if there is a receiver or television receiver with the option of supplying electricity through the antenna cord.

Which antenna for digital TV is better to choose and buy?

Select an antenna based on the technical characteristics of the TV receiver, the distance from the TV tower and the possibility of placing it in a room or on the street:

  • When you do not want to make any fasteners, the apartment is far from the TV tower, the TV does not provide power through the antenna cable, the Thomson ANT1706 43 dB active model is ideal.
  • If you can get by with an internal unit without additional amplification, the time-tested Delta UHF is the best choice. This model combines a very low price and excellent picture quality in the zone of reliable TV reception.
  • For an apartment in a new building, far from the TV tower, stylish BBK DA04 Black, compact GAL AR-162, easy-to-install REMO BAS-5122 5V ASTRA are suitable. Before buying, you must tell the seller which TV model the product is being bought for in order to clarify the possibility of connection.
  • When the priority is not only quality but also appearance, it’s hard not to pay attention to the internal antenna BBK DA20, which will fit any interior and the original HARPER ADVB-2120.
  • If your house or apartment is in the zone of interference from a cell tower, you should consider purchasing an external antenna Funke DSC 310. It is quite expensive, but it will successfully cut off all unnecessary interference and give a high-quality picture under any operating conditions.
  • Locus Meridian-12F with power supply to the antenna input will be one of the best options for obtaining a high-quality image in confident broadcast areas. It belongs to a moderate price category and thus outperforms more expensive products with the same technical characteristics.
  • Pleasant cost, high quality, lack of requirements for the connection source converged in the Hyundai H-TAE240. Easily attached to the outside of the building and provides a stable picture without distortion.

Digital TV broadcasting is no longer the future, but the realities of today. You can choose an antenna for a TV receiver of any brand and generation that will allow you to watch your favorite TV shows with good image quality.

Summer heat heats the roofs of houses and antennas installed on them for receiving television. Temperature fluctuations can theoretically affect the quality of TV signal reception. However, there are other, more obvious factors that can lead to interruptions in the TV signal. We tell you how to return the TV in case of its disappearance.

Receiving antenna at its limit

In 2019, Russia completed the transition to digital terrestrial TV. Analogue broadcasting of federal TV channels has ceased. Digital television is available to 100% of the country’s inhabitants, of which 98.4% can receive the terrestrial television signal of the terrestrial television network, for 1.6% direct satellite broadcasting is available.

Digital television made it possible for all residents of the country to receive 20 TV channels in excellent quality. The work of RTRS transmitting stations is monitored by both specialists and automation, which sends a signal about the slightest deviations in the operation of any communication object, even if this does not directly affect the operation of the equipment. For example, about the rise in temperature in the transmitter container. Therefore, the likelihood that the TV stopped showing due to a failure in the transmitting equipment is extremely small. For viewers, such failures happen much more often.

RTRS carefully analyzes the problems that viewers have. To do this, there is a “hot line”, the Viewer’s Cabinet on the site seetsiru.rf, RTRS pages in social networks. Based on the results of many years of monitoring requests, we can say that the main reason for the loss of the signal from the viewer is an incorrectly installed receiving antenna. The antenna that a person connects to his TV or set-top box.

A bit of theory. In analog television, an incorrectly selected antenna gave a noisy picture on the TV. But the viewer understood that the broadcast was on, the problem was on his side. With digital broadcasting, the usual analog interference is absent, the picture is either there or disappears altogether. The periodic disappearance of the picture means that the antenna catches the signal at the limit of its technical capabilities. Any change in reception conditions – rain, abnormal heat, blossoming leaves, even a passing car – slightly change the signal strength, the antenna is no longer enough. When overheated or cooled, the parameters of the metal change, and the contacts in the receiving antenna may be broken. In analog, noise would go on the screen, in digital, the image simply disappears. As a result, the viewer either sees a beautiful picture, or does not see it at all, and this is confusing, causing suspicion of failures in the transmitting equipment.

The practical conclusion from this theory is that it is necessary to select a receiving antenna, which gives a margin of the received signal level, so that when conditions deteriorate, the signal is enough for reception. Its design must be durable and weather resistant.

Most set-top boxes and TVs have a function that displays signal strength and quality indicators on the screen. For confident reception, the level indicators must be at least 60%, and the quality – 100%. This is the main rule of success.

Where the antenna is looking

Before buying an antenna, RTRS recommends that you first find out the distance to the nearest TV tower. The location of the TV towers is indicated on the website at the address: map.rtrs.rf. Depending on the distance, you need to select an antenna. The simplest are indoor antennas, they are easy to install, but they only work if the TV tower is in line of sight. If the tower is not visible from the window, you need an external passive antenna (without a signal amplifier). It is installed on balconies, facades and roofs. Such an antenna confidently receives a signal at a distance of up to 20 km. For long distances, up to 30-50 km from the tower, you need an outdoor antenna with an amplifier installed above the roof of the house. Digital television is received only by antennas of the decimeter range (UHF). They usually look like a Christmas tree with its top turned towards the TV tower. Antennas of the meter range (MV), which are still left over from the time of analog television, do not guarantee reliable reception of a digital signal.

You can find out where the antenna should look by using the compass, finding out the azimuth on the same site map. rtrs.rf, or by experience. After connecting the antenna to a TV or set-top box with a cable, turn on the signal level and quality display mode on the TV or set-top box and rotate the antenna around the mast or bracket. The signal does not change immediately, after moving the antenna, you must wait a few seconds before the change is displayed. Since the antenna may be located on the roof, it is better to carry out this setting together with an assistant in front of the TV. Empirically, it is especially useful to adjust the direction of the antenna in the city. The digital signal reflects well off buildings and is often much stronger when the antenna is facing the opposite house. Strong wind can turn the antenna, so if the TV stopped showing after a hurricane or hail, you should first of all check how this event affected the outdoor antenna.

TV eyes and ears

Knowing these features, it is easy to answer other questions about reception problems. For the same reasons – the operation of the receiving antenna at the limit of possibility – can only show one multiplex. Recall that to broadcast 20 TV channels, each repeater has two transmitters, each broadcasting 10 channels. Their power is the same, but the frequency channels are different, and some frequency is a little more consistent with the characteristics of the receiving antenna. A similar problem is in remote areas where the signal strength is weak. An outdoor antenna with an amplifier mounted on a high mast should work here. But putting a powerful antenna near the station is the same as shouting in your ear, the signal will disappear. But such errors, according to the statistics of calls, are extremely rare.

The antenna circuit also includes the cable that runs from the antenna to the TV. If it is poorly soldered to the plug, damaged, pinched, it dampens the signal. One of the viewers complained that his TV stopped showing in the morning. It turned out that dew got into the damaged cable in the morning, and in the afternoon it dried up. Cable resistance should be 75 ohm. This is usually written on its outer shell.

The antenna is the eyes and ears of the TV. Only with it, the TV will delight with a beautiful picture. Statistics show that viewers have already mastered the features of digital reception and are confidently switching channels. If there is no time or desire to understand this, on the same site karta.rtrs.rf you can find the contacts of the nearest antenna service and entrust the matter to professionals. By the way, antenna services can add their contacts to the site to indicate their willingness to help viewers.
