‘Not only are these pieces often finely crafted to stand the test of time, they bring much needed character and charm to what otherwise might be a more contemporary home,’ explains interior designer Emma Sims Hilditch.

Here we’ve rounded up a selection of inspiring ways for integrating antiques and vintage finds into your home alongside some expert advice from interior experts.

Decorating with vintage 

There are many approaches to decorating with vintage, but many of the interiors experts agree that when it comes to choosing vintage pieces you should buy what you love rather than what you think might be valuable. 

‘The first steps for anyone beginning the journey of decorating with vintage should start with what a person likes, rather than focussing on the value. It’s about finding pieces that speak to you on a personal level. It’s not necessary to spend a fortune from the outset,’ says interior designer Henriette von Stockhausen.

‘Decorating with antiques really adds a sense of charm and history to a room. Go for what you love, rather than what you think might be valuable or on trend,’ adds Louise Roe, founder of nostalgic homeware brand Sharland England.

For interior designer Kelly Weastler the key to decorating with vintage is to mix pieces from different eras.

‘I am a firm believer that in every era there is incredible design and I pull from lots of different periods – I love mixing deco, Bauhaus, mid-century modern decor; sticking to one era can be a bit one note. If you buy all your furniture new it’s going to start to look dated quickly, but if you take the time to curate and shop in a variety of places, you end up with a much more timeless room.

‘I start sourcing furniture early on in projects, and taking time to find the right pieces makes all the difference. I’m always looking for a balance between vintage and contemporary. If I buy a new sofa maybe I’ll look for a vintage coffee table, so they offset one another,’ adds Kelly Weastler .

When decorating with vintage pieces don’t feel like all your need to match says Henriette von Stockhausen, instead follow your heart. ‘The truth is that often the more contrived and forced an interior is, the less successful it is,’ she says.

‘Some people will stumble over the need to focus on one period or genre which perhaps reflect the time in which the house was built. This can be important for those who are trying to restore a room or house to the original design. But my approach with clients is to encourage them to mix pieces from different countries, styles and periods, if they are comfortable doing so.’

For many interior designers the appeal of choosing vintage furniture over modern is its longevity.

‘The materials used were generally high quality – hardwoods and unusual woods that people don’t use now or silks or embroideries. For quality, design and durability, antiques compare very favorably to modern furniture,’ explains interior designer Susan Deliss .

To ensure you’re buying a quality piece and not a reproduction, ‘check the authenticity of the antiques you purchase – there should be labels, hallmarks or details of the maker’s location and often a certificate of authenticity,’ says Clara Ewart, head of design at Kitesgrove .

Embrace vintage textiles

Whether introduced through cushions, lampshades or bedspreads, vintage textiles are a brilliant way to inject room color, pattern and softness into an interior – you could even hang a fabric panel as a piece of wall decor. 

Made by hand with exquisite craftsmanship, there are beautiful vintage fabrics available from all over the world which showcase an array of different techniques, from Indian Kantha quilts and Japaneze Shibori to embroidered Suzani panels from Central Asia.

‘I just love that vintage textiles are one-of-a-kind, I’m drawn to the colors and patterns that tell the tales of time,’ says Chloe Jonason who creates beautifully handcrafted homewares alongside providing a bespoke curtain, blinds, upholstery and design service. ‘They have a certain faded elegance which makes them easy to mix and match as the muted colors all work really well together.’

Choose antique lighting

With many beautifully decorative designs available, antique and vintage lighting is becoming increasingly popular among homeowners wanting to make a decorative statement.

‘It is about a lighting feature that has the same impact when it is off as it does when illuminated, decadent and glamorous, function and form, it needs to light a space, but also ignite the imagination,’ says Lucy Tonge, owner of decorative antiques and lighting dealer LCT Home .

‘We’ve seen quite a surge in demand for antique and vintage wall sconces in the past few months, there has always been a strong desire among many of our style conscious clients to secure that key piece of vintage designer lighting, and the focus used to lean more toward ceiling lights, be they flush mounts or chandeliers.  

‘However, the recent trends have very much been focused toward securing that unique piece of lighting for the wall, whether it is a pair of beautiful naturally inspired flora and fauna sconces, or a spectacular statement light, the appetite among our clients for wall lighting that is decorative as well as functional is stronger than ever, particularly from the 1960s–80s.’

Up-cycle vintage pieces

Whether it’s recovering mid-century armchair, giving a lick of paint to an old sideboard, or framing a new artwork with an old gilt frame, giving vintage finds a new lease of life is a great way to create unique pieces for your home, plus it helps reduce waste, too. Pieces such as these would work perfectly in design styles such as the Retro Revival look.

‘There are many places to find wonderful antiques and you don’t need to have a big budget to find pieces which can be restored, re-upholstered and renewed whether you choose to go to a decorative fair or an auction house,’ says Clara Ewart, Head of Design at Kitesgrove. 

‘Re-purposing one-off pieces of furniture or lighting will also provide a great sense of satisfaction to be continuing the life of an item which may otherwise have been discarded.’

Play with texture

Boasting beautiful time-worn patinas, vintage vessels, books and artefacts make beautiful pieces for decorating shelves. ‘I prefer to use contrasting textures but with a minimal color palette when I decorate with vintage pieces. I limit the colors to a maximum of three,’ explains interior designer Julia Dempster . 

When styling a shelf, ‘do not have all the items on a longer shelf the same height. Not only should you contrast materials, you should mix up the heights, too,’ she adds.

Integrate vintage pieces into the kitchen

If you’re looking to create a vintage kitchen, adding in freestanding pieces of furniture such as dressers, sideboards or buffet tables, will instantly add personality and create a more relaxed feel. 

‘It is definitely worth spending time sourcing vintage pieces to break up a room, they can really make a difference to the finished look and always add personality and character, says Helen Parker, creative director at Devol .

While fitted kitchen cabinets are great for maximizing storage ideas, freestanding vintage pieces boast beautiful aged patinas, which, when used in combination with cabinetry, can help break up the uniformity of the space. Freestanding kitchens can also be easily reconfigured if you’re looking to change the kitchen layout, plus can be taken with you if you move house. 

Take a cue from the architecture

When decorating with art or vintage wall décor, taking inspiration from the architecture of the room is a good place to start suggests Julia Dempster.

‘In this living area I selected textural pieces such as a 3D Juju hat made of feathers from St. Frank and vintage tribal handwoven baskets from Fragments of Identity,’ she says of this farmhouse-style Pacific Palisades home.

‘The architectural features were curved, and I wanted the artwork emphasize the architectural elements, the three pieces were selected to reflect both the wall and the colors and textures within the sisal rug and the cushions on the sofa.’

Bring antiques into the bathroom

Bathroom ideas can run the risk of feeling cold and clinical, but introducing antiques and vintage finds is a great way to bring warmth, texture and personality. Why not mount modern sinks onto a Victorian washstand to create a unique and playful vanity unit.

Think creatively about how you can bring new purpose to old or unwanted items suggests Henriette von Stockhausen. ‘There are so many ways to incorporate antiques with perhaps the only rule being not to be afraid to mix and experiment. Old paravent screens can become cupboard doors, rugs can become headboards, urns can become lamps and tables can become kitchen islands! Creativity is key – let your imagination run wild and tell your own story!’

How do you mix modern and vintage decor?

‘Always style vintage pieces with a mix of more contemporary items, as you don’t want to create a period film set in the living room,’ explains Louise Roe. ‘I love the warmth and comfort that wood and old textiles bring to interiors with their worn patina – try draping a vintage Suzani over the back of the sofa to add a focal point to the room.’

‘Vintage and collectable accessories will also add eternal quirk and give a space which might otherwise be on-trend but lifeless, a real sense of depth, personality and soul,’ says Martin Waller, director at Andrew Martin.

‘They will highlight the minimalist backdrop in which they sit, accentuating your fashionable and meticulously thought-out scheme, whilst adding something original from which the conversation starts. I mean that metaphorically and literally, there always has to be a surprise in a room to create visual excitement as well as something new to talk about with guests.’

Sneakers with heels and platform sneakers are quite unpopular now. The latter are the so-called famous sneakers from Isabel Marant and all sorts of their replicas. They were incredibly popular for several years in a row, but that was already 10-15 years ago. This type of shoes will definitely remind you of yourself and will certainly return to fashion. Perhaps soon, but not now.

I would also like to include slipper sneakers among the stylistic taboos. These are textile slippers, only remotely resembling sneakers or slip-ons. They can be with or without laces. With such slippers it is almost impossible to create a stylish modern look. They look very simple and very cheap. However, they are quite often found in the wardrobes of girls. In this case, I always advise you to purchase full-fledged sneakers or slip-ons in your wardrobe, at least in textile, even in leather.

Slip-ons have not been at the peak of fashion popularity for several years, especially actively printed and richly decorated models. At the same time, slip-ons remain an absolutely basic element of a shoe wardrobe. Like slip-ons, wear them with pleasure. Just choose more concise, sporty and modern models (more details here). But the models in the photo below will not be an ideal option in your shoe wardrobe.

| OLD FASHIONED SHOES WITHOUT A HEEL

Fairly head this item, and perhaps the entire list, “age” shoes. They most often have a round nose and are usually made of matte, dull leather. The variety of models here can be great, so it’s better to see the visuals in the photo below. Such shoes can be easily found on the streets of the city on women aged 50-60+, who are far from trends and fashion trends. Hence the corresponding associative name.

Wedges with a round toe are another outdated example of a shoe wardrobe. Such shoes with rich decor and a lot of decorations in the form of flowers, beads, perforations, etc. look especially old-fashioned. Similar shoes with cork soles are also obsolete. And it’s not that the wedge is not in fashion. It’s just the opposite (read more here). But the traditional combination of wedges with a similar design of shoes, as in the photo below, looks very out of date.

Many shoe brands often sell bad moccasin models. You can find very modern models (read more here). But more often there are old-fashioned ones, as in the photo below.

“Wrong” ballet shoes will definitely not decorate your look. Ballet shoes are always in fashion, a little more or a little less. True, modern ballet flats are now more like pumps with low Viennese heels with a sharp, slightly rounded or even square cape. Trend models are more reminiscent of soft oriental grandmothers (more details here). Moreover, such soft ballet flats are most often worn by women of fashion in a characteristic way – with a worn heel.

The photo below shows not the most successful models of ballet flats. First of all, they are made “wrong” by a round toe in combination with a thin, often flexible sole and outdated decor. Any sports or semi-sports sole looks out of date on ballet shoes, for example, as on red ballet shoes in the photo example below.

By the way, ballet shoes are very controversial shoes in terms of corrective techniques. They are suitable only for slender girls with narrow feet and graceful ankles. But with a wide edematous foot, a massive ankle and a full calf, ballet flats are contraindicated. In this case, they always look very bad.

| OLD FASHIONED HEEL SHOES

The most relevant now is considered to be shoes without a heel, the most convenient and comfortable. But heeled models are also presented in a wide variety in the assortment of fashionable shoe brands. True, it should be noted that the heel has become a little lower, a little more stable and more comfortable. And even on the red carpet now, not everyone flaunts on twelve-centimeter stilettos.

Pumps are traditionally an invariable shoe base of women’s wardrobe. But not all models will decorate it. Here, first of all, you need to pay attention to the elegance and clarity of the lines of the block. And, of course, the decor and details. Roughly made boats, as in the photo below, look very out of date and unaesthetic. The most controversial cape of modern boats in terms of fashion trends is round. Actual basic boats most often have a neat, sharp nose. For trendy models, the cape can be square or exaggeratedly sharp and elongated (more details here).

The quintessential old-fashioned heeled shoe is the hoof or stripper shoe. The combination of a thin high converging heel with a hidden or visible platform in the toe box looks archaic. The platform is now on the highest trend, but it looks completely different – more rough and brutal (read more here).

| OLD FASHIONED SANDALS AND SANDALS

Let’s gradually move from shoes to more open shoes. Slingbacks or sandals with a closed toe and an open heel, which is held on the leg only by a thin strap, are now quite popular. They may well become the basis of an elegant business style. But, unfortunately, not all slingbacks are equally relevant. A round spherical nose, a rough last, an old-fashioned decor, a platform in the toe part can often give out archaic slingback models.

“Children’s Sandals” is another example of comfortable, but very unfortunate shoes that are often found on the streets of the city on women of any age. It’s not even that such sandals are not in fashion now. They just look very strange on the legs of an adult girl or woman. Stylish images with them definitely will not work.

Like shoes, all models of sandals with a high thin converging heel and a platform in the toe are outdated.

Woven summer boots and high gladiator sandals have long gone out of fashion. Fashion is unpredictable. Perhaps soon we will see similar models on the catwalks and on the Instagram feed of popular fashion bloggers. Or maybe not.

Well, and closes the list of irrelevant shoes for the warm season, similar clogs on wedges, as in the photo below, including those on cork wedges. Such shoes will not make your look fashionable, stylish and modern.

| OLD FASHIONED BOOTS

We’re done with our warm season shoe wardrobe, now let’s talk about more closed shoes. Let’s start with boots. Such models as in the photo below, for the most part, look obsolete. First of all, because of the characteristic block. A worthy alternative to them will be men’s style boots (Chelsea, Derby, Oxfords, monks) or modern feminine ankle boots (more details here).

Any boots with a rough “clumsy” instep, with a spherical round toe, with wedges, as well as with any old-fashioned decor can be safely attributed to the old-fashioned models of boots. Their variety is great, a few examples are presented in the photo below.

Take a close look at the winter models with fur in the photo below. They also do not look relevant now. And it’s not that the fur on the shoes looks old-fashioned. First of all, always pay attention to the instep, heel, shape of the nose and heel, detailing.

I also want to draw your attention to ankle boots with a very thin sole, as in the photo below. One gets the visual impression that these are slightly grown old-fashioned ballet flats. They also often have a round, spherical nose. Such boots are found both on the streets of the city and on sale in stores, but they look out of date now.

Just like shoes and sandals, ankle boots with relatively thin converging heels or wedges and a hidden rounded platform in the toe cap are completely out of fashion.

Laconic sheepskin boots are in fashion now, especially in a shortened version. But it is better to avoid active decor on ugg boots. And do not wear worn out options.

| OLD FASHIONED BOOTS

Similar to boots on boots, the “clumsy” bottom part with a rough instep and the upper part, padded with fur, look old-fashioned. A rough instep without sufficient flex, a massive heel, a round toe, a wedge heel, matte, dull leather, excess decor, or any other old-fashioned details can all be signs of an outdated shoe. Completely different models of boots are in fashion now (more details here).

Boots and half boots look especially bad in the winter version with fur on the inside or on the outside of the top. Such models of winter shoes are very massive and for the most part completely old-fashioned.

At present, high-heeled boots with a narrow tight-fitting bootleg are losing heavily, especially those with a high converging heel and with a hidden platform in the toe. An accordion on boots is now in fashion, but not on such models as in the photo below.

Boots are quite controversial footwear in terms of corrective techniques, especially if not styled correctly. Actual boots with a wide top in the form of a pipe look good only on slender, long-legged girls. For all other women, it is advisable to cover the top of the boot with the hem of a skirt or dress. At the same time, it is still better if the boots have a fit in the ankle area and a more compact shaft.

But dark boots in combination with light-colored tights and a skirt above the knee look bad on almost everyone without exception. Especially if the boots have an old-fashioned last and an outdated design. But it is precisely such stylization, as the basis of “Russian folk fashion”, that is quite often found on the streets of our cities.

| COMPARISON OF OLD-FASHIONED AND CURRENT SHOE MODELS

At the very end, I want to draw your attention to the fact that obsolete shoes are primarily given out by the block, sole, cape shape and heel shape. And this can often be seen only in comparison. This is the opportunity I want to give you now, at least visually. And in the store you can practice on your own, already possessing theoretical knowledge on this issue.

In addition to the last, be sure to pay attention to outdated details that most often characterize outdated shoes. Old-fashioned details are often easier to recognize than an outdated or simply unfortunate shoe last. Among the unsuccessful decor can be roses and any “flower beds” of flowers, aged denim, openwork lace inserts and perforations in the form of complex patterns (flowers, monograms, very large perforations), embroidery, rhinestones and beads … But the shoe is still primary, not decor. But the latter can be a good hint and indicator of the old-fashionedness of a particular shoe model.

By the way, the more decor on shoes that are not of the highest price segment, the worse they usually look. Poor-quality fittings very often betray the real value of a thing. Active decor makes any thing less versatile and less durable in terms of fashion trends.

And now I bring to your attention a gallery of unsuccessful shoe models that I found on sale at the time of this writing. It is clear that I found much more than the presented visual range. Oddly enough, it is much easier to buy shoes that are unsuccessful in terms of style than successful ones, especially on a limited budget.

In Russia, on the contrary, spaces are open to interpretation, they are multilayered. And I’ve also noticed people who, at first glance, don’t seem to know what they’re doing there. I tried to integrate such characters into my shots,” says German photographer Frank Herforth about his work.

Photographer Frank Herfort is from Leipzig. Lives and works in Moscow and Berlin, specializes in architectural, advertising and editorial photography. For more than ten years he has been photographing various public places throughout Russia and in the post-Soviet countries. From this work came the cycle “ Russian Fairy Tales ” (Russian Fairy Tales).

I always shoot slowly, deliberately. It is also important to spend enough time in each place. If you wait a long time, then over time you become part of the space, people stop paying attention to you.

In Herfort’s work, old-fashioned decor, which is still preserved in many Russian interiors, meets with modern elements, as if imported from outside, which takes the scene into inter-time. The picture seems to persuade the viewer to interpret the plot in their own way, to come up with their own story.

Originality, sincerity, style and surrealism are invariably present in the shots of the German photographer.

I only photograph real scenes – never staged – but I’m always looking for surreal elements. My gaze searches for incomprehensible situations, moments in which you cannot figure out what is happening. Out of abstract circumstances, I try to create mysterious images.
