Decking material options: Best Deck Material Options for 2022

Decking Material: Composite, Wood, Plastic & More

Once upon a time, selecting a decking material was a simple process because wood was the only choice available. Today, other options range from composite to plastic and even aluminum. Traditionalists will always see wood as the one true decking material, but the new alternatives offer many alluring benefits, including longevity and low maintenance.

Take your time while researching your choices. Exploring all the possibilities may open your mind to a material you’ve never considered before or even known about. We’ve listed some popular options below.

Wood Decking Material

Photo by Hamilton Hedrick

The original and still most common decking option, wood is natural, strong, easy to install and feels good under bare feet. But it also requires an annual cleaning and can rot, splinter, and warp. Even though all wood naturally weathers to a gray color, it should be cleaned and re-stained every two to three years to keep it looking its best.

Pressure Treated Wood

Lasting about 15 years, this is the least expensive type of decking. Most pressure-treated wood is made from Southern yellow pine, which is quick to splinter if not maintained. When working with this wood, always use gloves, wear a mask, and never burn it because the toxic chemicals in the wood that prevent rot and termites can also be harmful to your health. These chemicals are also highly corrosive so for best results, use only stainless steel fasteners.

Tropical Hardwoods

Extremely dense and highly durable, these patio decking materials are rich in color and resistant to insects and decay and last about 25 years. But they are also expensive, heavy, and hard to work with — so hard in fact that you can’t hammer a nail without drilling a hole first. Avoid dark woods if your deck sees a lot of sun during the day because they will heat up like a frying pan.

  1. Red Balau, from Austin Wholesale Decking, $1.95/lineal ft.
  2. Golden Ironwood, From Austin Wholesale Decking, $1.79/lineal ft.
  3. Ipe, from Austin Wholesale Decking, $1.99/lineal ft.
  4. Cambara, from Ring’s End, $2.95/lineal ft.
  5. Cumaru, from Austin Wholesale Decking, $1.79/lineal ft.

Redwood and Cedar

Photo by Hamilton Hedrick

A step up from pressure-treated wood—and costing about three times more—are cedar and redwood. These woods contain natural defenses against rot and insects, and should last around 20 years, but they are soft and easily damaged by foot traffic. Red cedar and redwood are both lightweight and stiff. Lighter-colored Port Orford Cedar is the hardest and most wear-resistant cedar.

Cedar is from the same genus as redwood, so the two have similar properties, but the former is less dense and can flex more without breaking. It also has less natural oil, which makes it easier to stain. Cedar forests are more abundant than redwood forests, making cedar the eco-friendlier and less expensive option.

In the past, redwood was more prized for its rich, red-brown coloring. It’s also the most fire-resistant wood on the market. However, excessive logging has made redwood less available, and what’s on the market today comes from new-growth trees, which aren’t as strong as the old-growth ones that built up redwood’s reputation. Redwood is mostly offered on the West Coast, from where it’s sourced.

Both cedar and redwood need to be power-washed, sanded, and refinished every three years or so. The material can last decades, but like all woods, the sun soon fades their natural color to gray; a sun-blocking stain is required to keep the color sharp. A water-repellent wood preservative can help prevent fine splits from occurring.

  1. Red Cedar, from the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association, $1.25-$2.75/lineal ft., depending on grade
  2. Redwood, from the California Redwood Association, $1. 50/lineal ft.
  3. Port Orford White Cedar, from Ring’s End, $1.50/lineal ft.

Composite Decking Material

Photo by Hamilton Hedrick

Composites are made to look like real wood and come in a wide variety of natural-looking hues and grain patterns. Made by combining a blend of plastic and waste wood fibers, these boards won’t splinter and don’t need to be stained or painted, thanks to a built-in UV resistance.

Composites are more expensive and heavier than most woods and must be scrubbed regularly to prevent mildew, but if you factor in the maintenance costs for a wood deck, the amount you end up spending may turn out to be comparable.

Composites aren’t as stiff as wood, and they move more in response to changes in temperature. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions to the letter. When screwing through the face, use the special fasteners designed to prevent bumps from erupting around screw heads.

Same Texture on Both Sides

Installation is less complicated when the boards have the same texture on both sides. Trex offers a smooth, double-sided finish, while Monarch has a wood-grain finish on either side. This will make it easy when laying the planks, as it can’t be put in the wrong way.

  1. Brasilia, from Trex, $2.85/lineal ft.; recycled polyethylene and waste wood from woodworking manufacturers; 25-year limited warranty
  2. Exotics, from Monarch, about $2.67/lineal ft.; virgin plastic and recycled wood floor from the furniture and flooring industry; 20-year limited warranty

It’s nice to have options. Certainteed makes its Boardwalk decking with a smooth and a wood-grain face. TimberTech’s TwinFinish has a brushed, textured surface and a “VertiGrain” surface, which resembles wood-grain. Their “Earthwood” product is VertiGrain and serrated.

  1. Earthwood, from TimberTech, $2.50-$3.00/lineal ft.; virgin polyethylene and reclaimed wood fiber; 25-year warranty
  2. TwinFinish, from TimberTech, $2. 00-$2.50/lineal ft.; virgin polyethylene and reclaimed wood fiber; 25-year warranty
  3. Boardwalk, from Certainteed, $2.60-$3.00/lineal ft.; PVC and wood flour/natural fibers; 10-year limited warranty

Grooves on the underside of composite decking can make a board lighter without compromising stiffness. Grooves in the edges of a board allow the use of hidden fasteners so no screws are visible on the deck’s face.

  1. Tendura, for use only on covered porches, $2.50/lineal ft.; polypropylene and waste wood fiber; lifetime limited warranty
  2. Latitudes, from UFP Ventures II, Inc., $1.99-$2.09/lineal ft.; polyethylene and wood flour; 15-year limited warranty
  3. ChoiceDek, from Weyerhaeuser, $1.82/lineal ft.; recycled polyethylene and recycled wood fiber; limited lifetime warranty
  4. Boardwalk, from Certainteed, $2.60-$3.00/lineal ft.; PVC and wood flour/natural fibers; 10-year limited warranty
  5. Floorizon, from TimberTech, $2. 50-$3.00/lineal ft.; virgin polyethylene and reclaimed wood fiber; 25-year warranty

Plastic Decking Material

Photo by Hamilton Hedrick

Cellular PVC vinyl decking is made entirely from environmentally safe plastic—there’s no wood in it at all. This means that it’s even more durable than composite and will likely last a lifetime. It’s splinter-free and requires almost no maintenance, except for the occasional cleaning. But it doesn’t always look, sound, or feel much like wood.

These decks also have complex fastening systems so the pieces can move as the temperature changes, but they squeak when you walk on them.

The price of PVC decking varies depending on the quality and design of the material, but in general it’s more expensive than composite.

PVC Examples

The 1.2″ thick ForeverWood contains hollow channels to maximize stiffness. A hidden rubberized strip helps minimize noise and squeaking. The tongue-and-groove feature makes for easy installation and hides the screws so that you have a neat, uniform look.

DeckoraWood is a similar material, but only 5/8″ thick, so it can be placed over existing wood decks or concrete patios. The wood-grain on each material provides extra traction, especially when the deck becomes slick.

  1. ForeverWood, from ICA Group, Inc., $3.50/lineal ft.; 100% PVC; limited lifetime warranty
  2. DeckoraWood, from ICA Group, Inc., $2.25/lineal ft.; 100% PVC; limited lifetime warranty

Polystyrene

With deep grooves on its underside, Eon decking is stiff, strong, and light. No fasteners are visible thanks to a hidden clip system. Its non-slip surface actually becomes less slippery when wet. It comes in six different colors and, for plastic, is a great way to fool your guests into thinking it’s real wood.

Eon, from CPI Plastics Group Ltd., $2.49-$2.59/lineal ft.; 100% polystyrene; 25-year limited warranty

Aluminum

Photo by Douglas Adams

While it’s not nearly as popular as the other options, aluminum is actually an ideal material for decking. It’s lighter and stronger than wood, composite, and vinyl, and resistant to mold, weather, and insects. It’s even recyclable—not that you have to worry about that, since an aluminum deck will last forever. All these qualities make aluminum the most expensive decking option of them all.

#1 Pressure-Treated Wood for Decks

Made of fir permeated with anti-rot and insecticide agents, pressure-treated decking is a low-cost favorite. The anti-rot treatment once included arsenic, but since 2004 relies on less poisonous agents, such as copper, which poses a health hazard only if burned. The basic tan or brown color of pressure-treated decking can be enhanced with stain. Pressure-treated lumber can last for decades, but requires refinishing with a clear sealer or stain every other year.

Cost of pressure-treated decking: About $2.35 per sq. ft. (labor is extra).

#2 Cedar Decking

The natural beauty of real wood is unmatched. In addition, this perennial decking favorite is inexpensive and easy to work with—a good choice for the do-it-yourselfer. Buy the darker-colored heartwood—anything else is sapwood and can rot within a few years. Look for “heartwood common,” which has more heartwood than the cheaper “construction common.” Expect annual refinishing and a life of 15 to 20 years.

Cost of cedar decking: About $3.75 per sq. ft. for material only (labor is extra).

#3 Redwood

Once the very last word in decking, redwood is expensive and now available only on the West Coast. It’s lightweight, strong, and easy to work with. Select only high-grade decking lumber with little of the cream-colored sapwood, which can deteriorate rapidly when exposed to the elements. The darker-colored heartwood is naturally rot-resistant. With regular maintenance, redwood will last 15 to 20 years.

Cost of redwood decking: About $7.75 per sq. ft. for material only.

#4 Vinyl Decking

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) decking is the new kid on the block and rapidly gaining favor as a material that is as close to maintenance-free as decking will ever be. PVC has no wood content. Premium varieties have a cellular core wrapped with an exterior layer of solid PVC and come with a 25-year warranty. Color options include white, gray, browns, and tans.

Cost of vinyl decking: About $7.50 per sq. ft. for hollow core; $9. 50 solid core

#5 Composite Decking

Made of wood fiber combined with recycled polyethylene, composite decking is a good-looking, low-maintenance material. Composites come in a broad range of colors and textures that closely approximate real wood. It also offers design versatility: Pros have apparatus for heating planks so they can be bent to make eye-catching in-laid designs.

Premium varieties come with a 25-year warranty. Although maintenance is low, the wood content can host mold if not cleaned with a deck wash every three to four years.

Cost of composite decking: About $7.80 per sq. ft.

#6 Ipe

Image: AdvantageLumber.com

A popular South American hardwood, ipe is beautiful, naturally resistant to rot, and durable. It’s also extremely hard, making installation labor-intensive. To maintain its rich appearance, ipe must be sealed every year. It can last 25 years or more.

Because it’s imported, its price can fluctuate. Reliable lumber suppliers should offer assurance that these woods are seeded or naturally renewed. To confirm that the supplier engages in sustainable practices, check in with the Forest Stewardship Council.

Cost of ipe decking: About $12 per sq. ft. for material only (labor can double the cost because it is hard to work with)

Deck Maintenance

Wood decking of any type requires annual refinishing to hold its original luster. If you do it yourself, plan on paying about $13 per 100 square feet for deck cleaner, $15 for sealer. If you’ve skipped a season, add $10 per 100 square feet for brightener.

In tough climates or when maintenance has been long deferred, a wood deck will need to be washed, stripped, sanded, and resealed, a process that can cost $2.50 per sq. ft. if you hire it out. Do that twice on a cedar deck and you would have been better off buying synthetic decking that needs only an occasional washing and has a life expectancy of 25 years.

Best Decking Materials: PVC vs Composite Decking

To start exploring which decking material is best for you, let’s start by getting a clear picture of what you want in a deck. Then we’ll run through the style and functional differences between different decking materials to help make your decisions clear.

Our deck project planners tailor every deck project to each customer’s unique needs. Here are a few of the questions we use to help plan a truly personalized deck project:

What Will You Do On Your Deck?

Some decks are relaxing getaways, an oasis to enjoy a hot cup of coffee with the peaceful sunrise, or a late-night glass of wine as the stress of the day evaporates. Other decks are lavish entertaining spaces to wow friends, family, and neighbors over a meal or a sizzling grill.

Do you have a specific activity you want to do on your deck? The photo above shows a cozy deck planned for relaxation, while the deck in the photo below is designed to create gardening space for a green-thumbed deck user. Knowing what you want to do on your deck helps you select a decking material that delivers on your deck goals.

Where Is Your Deck?

Is your deck in a patch of warm sunlight most of the day? Or is it in a sheltered, tree-shaded yard? Is it near a pool, lake, or other body of water? Is it a south-facing deck or north-facing deck? What is your local climate like?

Different decking materials react differently to direct sunlight, changes in temperature, or regular exposure to water. Take your deck’s setting into account as we move on to each material’s natural qualities.

Who Will Use Your Deck?

Is your deck a quiet, peaceful escape for solitary relaxation? A cozy space for bonding with a few friends or a small family? Will you host large gatherings like grill-outs or outdoor dinners? Will you have children or elderly relatives enjoying your deck space with you?

Keep yourself and your deck guests at the front of your mind – you’ll want to choose decking materials that make your deck feel welcoming and comfortable to you and your guests while keeping everyone safe.

These are just a few of the questions to consider to help you select the best deck boards for you. To see some more of the questions our project planners ask customers, check out our inspiration-based guide to choosing the best deck boards here.

What Are The Different Types of Decking Materials?

Let’s run through a range of the most common decking materials with some pros and cons of each – then recommend the best decking materials for the most common deck goals we hear from the customers we work with every day.

Traditional, High-Maintenance Decking

Decades ago, nearly all decks were made from varying species of wood. This decking material was popular because it was widely available and fairly cost-effective. Over the years, though, it’s proven to be a few more things: high-maintenance and not-so-durable.

Hardwood Or Pressure-Treated Wood Decking

Within the wood category, there’s a range of options. Pressure-treated wood decking is the most common – it’s lumber that’s been injected with preservatives. That makes pressure-treated wood slightly more durable, but still far short of the modern composites on the market.

Pressure-treated wood is also pretty limited in the looks it can deliver. That’s caused some deck builders to pay up for exotic hardwoods, which add some unique colors and textures.

At DecksDirect, we’ve been planning deck projects for years, and we strongly believe in planning decks for the long-term. A deck is a lifestyle investment: you plan your deck once, but you can enjoy it every day for years. That’s why we only carry the best in low-maintenance decking materials – materials and brands that we certify as high-quality and trustworthy over the long-term.

Modern Low-Maintenance Decking

Over the life of your deck, composite decking or PVC decking will be the best decking materials for a long-lasting deck that doesn’t require lots of regular maintenance.

What Is Composite Decking?

Composite decking is made from a mixture of natural wood fibers and modern, durable synthetics. That gives composite deck boards the organic look and feel of natural wood – but without the high maintenance demands.

You never have to paint, stain or seal composite decking. (Wood decks require investments of time and money for yearly staining and sealing). Composite boards hold their looks extremely well, without fading or discoloring.

Composite decking technology has improved to the point where composite boards feature incredibly realistic, unique wood grain patterns that match nearly any wood look imaginable. Composite deck boards also come in a huge range of colors, some matching the looks of sought-after exotic hardwoods and others delivering color tones you can’t find anywhere else.

Composite decking is also highly durable. It’s highly resistant to water damage like mold or mildew, and doesn’t warp, splinter or crack the way wood does. Composite decking is usually capped with a tough synthetic layer on the outside to prevent scratches while locking in the color and texture of the board.

What Is Mineral-Based Composite Decking?

Composite decking has continued to advance, with some manufacturers tweaking the composite mix to include minerals. These boards are known as mineral-based composites, or MBCs, and deliver many of the same benefits as composite decking, plus a few unique twists.

The biggest note is that mineral-based composite decking is incredibly stable even when temperatures shift. Wood decking changes shape dramatically when temperatures swing – that’s what causes warping, cracking, and splintering in any wood structure that’s exposed to the outdoor elements. Composite decking features far less expansion and contraction than wood, holding its shape better and keeping fasteners from working loose. Mineral-based composite decking takes it a step further, showing almost no thermal expansion or contraction. That makes for an especially stable, long-lasting deck surface that needs less regular inspection and maintenance.

Mineral-based composites also provide the best strength-to-weight ratio on the decking market, coming in around 35% lighter than traditional wood-plastic composites.

Browse MBC Decking Looks

What Is PVC Decking?

Where composite decking is a mix of natural and synthetic materials, PVC decking is 100% synthetic. Like composite decking, PVC is extremely durable and low-maintenance, lasting a long time and holding its looks through all sorts of weather.

Because PVC decking has no organic material, it’s even more water-resistant than composites. That means total resistance to mold, mildew, and insect damage.

PVC decking is also lighter than composite decking, and it cools down a bit faster if your deck is in direct sunlight and tends to retain heat.

Browse PVC Decking Looks

PVC Vs Composite Decking

One thing to note when comparing composite and PVC decking is that the ends of composite decking will usually show a visible capping. This cap protects the board and gives it the distinctive wood look.

You can see the capping below in this TimberTech Pro composite deck board profile:

What’s the Best Decking Material For My Outdoor Living Space?

Now that we’ve run through the differences in decking materials, let’s return to the ideal deck you pictured earlier and connect some of its qualities to a specific deck board material.

Most Water-Resistant Deck Boards: PVC

If your deck is right by the water, you won’t find a more moisture-resistant material than PVC decking. PVC boards don’t absorb water, giving them the best resistance to mold and mildew, which thrive on moisture.

Shop PVC Decking

Honorable mention: most premium composite decking is capped with PVC material around the outside, which protects most of your deck board surfaces from moisture. Composite deck boards can work just fine near water, and are certainly an improvement over traditional wood decking in moisture resistance. If your deck is near water and you choose composite decking, we recommend a board that is capped on all four sides, like TimberTech Pro.

Deck Boards With The Most Style And Color Options: Composite

If you’ve got a very specific color or look in mind, traditional composite decking is your best bet to find it. Composite decking has exploded in recent years. We carry six different brands that meet our high standards for premium-quality deck boards. Each of those brands features multiple decking lines, usually differentiated by “good/better/best” quality and price point.

For help navigating each brand’s unique qualities, read more here or call us at 1-888-824-5316.

Between all those brands and lines, there’s an amazing range of colors and wood grain looks to choose from. Whatever your vision, we’re confident we can find a board to deliver on it within our massive selection of composite deck boards. Below are just a few of the wide-ranging looks amid the composite decking selection.

Best-Performing Deck Boards In All Climates: Mineral-Based Composite

If you live in a climate with a wide range of temperatures, mineral-based composite will be your most stable option. Mineral-based composite decking shows almost zero expansion and contraction with changing temperatures, which keeps your boards from warping, moving, or slowly working fasteners loose.

Shop Mineral-Based Composite Decking

Best Deck Boards For Staying Cool On Hot, Sunny Days: PVC

No matter what decking material you use – wood, composite, or PVC – direct sunlight will cause boards to heat up and feel warm to the touch. For south-facing decks or decks in hot, sunny climates, that can make it difficult to walk with bare feet during the heat of the day.

PVC decking, though, tend to cool down faster than traditional composite. That means your deck may still get hot through the middle of a summer scorcher, but it will cool down more quickly as the sunlight and temperature drop.

Hot deck boards of all materials are mostly driven by three factors: color, sunlight, and the local temperature. So choosing a light-colored deck board, like a cool gray, will go a long way in keeping your deck surface from getting too hot.

Shop PVC Decking

Most Durable Deck Boards: PVC

PVC decking is also the top choice for long-lasting, durable deck boards. Much of this owes to PVC’s water resistance. It’s moisture-absorption that causes most of wood decking’s durability issues: warping, splitting, cracking, mold, mildew, rot, and insect damage.

Composite decking (both traditional wood-plastic composite and mineral-based composite) is also a highly-durable choice that far exceeds wood’s qualities. But PVC is one more step up for the best in durability.

Shop PVC Decking

Safest Deck Boards For Foot Traction: Composite

Composite deck boards tend to have the best surfaces for foot traction – though this can really depend on the specific board you choose. Each line of composite or PVC decking has its own unique wood-grain texture, and some of these provide better traction than others.

In general, composite decking will provide you with the best surface traction. But if you’re in love with the look of a PVC board, we’d suggest calling us at 1-888-824-5316, where we can describe the board’s texture and even set you up with a sample you can see and feel in person.

Shop Composite Decking

Most Natural-Looking Deck Boards: Composite

Because they contain real wood fibers, composite deck boards tend to offer the best natural-wood looks in the low-maintenance decking market. Composite deck boards feature beautiful, unique wood grain patterns – depending on the look you want, you can find composite boards with a very classic surface-level cathedral graining or with a more textured, deep-grooved surface.

Shop Composite Decking

Deck Boards With The Best Strength-To-Weight Ratio: Mineral-Based Composite

If you’re looking to balance premium strength with deck boards that are easier to ship, move, and install, then mineral-based composite decking is your ideal board. . As far as weight goes, PVC decking is the lightest and traditional composite the heaviest. Mineral-based composite falls somewhere between the two, but with the best pound-for-pound strength of the bunch.

The Best Decking Material, Solved!

Photo: istockphoto. com

Q: I’m putting a new deck on my house and I want to make sure it is constructed properly. What is the best decking material? Should I use natural wood, pressure-treated, or something altogether different?

A: With so many deck options available today, from natural wood to composite and aluminum, the decision may seem overwhelming. Ultimately, finding one that suits your space comes down to a compromise of four key factors: budget, climate, ease of maintenance, and overall aesthetic. Start your construction process by considering these five most popular picks for the best decking material—we’ve got the pros and cons for each.

Natural wood ($3.75 to $20+ per square foot) is durable and beautiful, but costs can run high.

Many homeowners opt for natural wood decking, whether it’s cedar, redwood, or tropical hardwoods. These durable materials, which have a traditionally beautiful appearance and rich color, resist rot and insects. But such attractive qualities come at a cost—both financial and physical. If you opt for natural wood decking materials, the price will depend on your desired variety: Expect to pay about $3.75 per square foot for cedar and $8 per square foot for redwood (although the latter will typically be cheaper on the west coast, where it’s more readily available). Some exotic hardwoods cost more than $20 per square foot! And without proper maintenance, it tends to fade or crack, so keep your investment in tip-top shape by pressure washing and re-sealing every couple of years.

Photo: istockphoto.com

Pressure-treated lumber ($1.50 to $2.50 per square foot) is a popular and affordable wooden alternative.

Often made from a southern pine infused with a chemical to make it resistant to rot, moisture, and insects, this widely available decking material is generally the least expensive option—certainly among wood decking materials—and therefore the most widely used. Homeowners enjoy pressure-treated wood for its durability and visual similarity to natural wood. It’s an ideal option for do-it-yourself construction because, unlike natural wood, it’s easy to cut and fasten with nails or screws.

If installing a pressure-treated wood deck, just try to avoid the cheapest budget varieties, since these are typically more susceptible to cracks, warps, and splits over time, any of which could actually cost you more in repairs down the road.

The biggest downside to pressure-treated wood? The infused chemicals release toxic gas into the air if burned, so it’s important to always reapply a good sealer when you stain every few years in order to minimize the exposure to chemicals when using the deck. Otherwise, in regards to maintenance, homeowners will need to pressure wash annually.

Alternatively, composite decking ($4 to $10 per square foot) offers durability and attractiveness for minimum maintenance.

Composite decking, from brands such as Trex and TimberTech, is made from a blend of recycled plastic (polyethylene, polypropylene, or PVC) mixed with wood fibers (like wood chips or sawdust). Not only does the durable synthetic material resist warping, it also holds strong against rot and insect infestations. Composite decking is available in a wide variety of colors and styles, including looks that mimic natural wood, none of which require sealing, sanding, or staining unless you absolutely want to change the color later on. On the flip side, dark-colored composite decking can get extremely hot in direct sunlight; mold and mildew can grow in shady, cool, or damp areas; and the surface can be quite slick when wet. (It’s best to allow adequate time to air-dry between lightly scrubbing down the surface and inviting guests out on the deck in order to avoid any slips.)

Plastic decking ($7 to 10 per square foot) stands up well over time, but the synthetic surface doesn’t look as natural.

The most popular plastic decking material is polyvinyl chloride (PVC), although there are also versions made from polyethylene. Just like composite decking, plastic is durable and easy to maintain, requiring regular cleaning with just a garden hose or bucket and mop. Plastic will not warp, crack, or split over time, and it’s impervious to moisture, rot, decay, and insects. What’s more, the surface does not need to be sanded, stained, or sealed. That said, plastic decking does have its disadvantages. The surface gets extremely hot in direct sunlight and susceptible to mold and mildew in shade. And, while available in a wide variety of colors and styles, darker colors tend to fade over time and lighter colors sometimes develop a chalky coating.

And, if you can live with its industrial appearance, aluminum decking ($7 to $10+ per square foot) boasts many advantages.

Often used near swimming pools and lakes, aluminum decking is a long-lasting and low-maintenance material. Most options feature a baked-on, powder-coated, or anodized finish that stands up to harsh weather conditions. Aluminum is extremely resistant to mold, mildew, and staining, and it also won’t rust, rot, crack, or peel over time. What’s more, most aluminum decking comes with a non-skid textured surface that prevents slips and falls. Surprisingly, most varieties of aluminum decking manage to stay cool even on the hottest days. However, this combination of benefits makes it one of the most expensive options, second only to some varieties of natural wood. The price—as well as the distinct industrial appearance—isn’t for every homeowner.

The Pros and Cons of the 9 Best Decking Materials For Your Yard

What if you could host an al fresco dinner party out on a private deck? Or watch the sunset with a cocktail in tow after a long workday? Decks are a place for reflection as much as recreation, whether yours is surrounding an in-ground swimming pool or as a balcony extension in the front or backyard. As with many outdoor features, the options when embarking on a deck design, can feel overwhelming. Let’s start with the basics: choosing the right decking materials to set a strong foundation, both visually and functionally. From fiberglass to concrete, grass, and all types of woods, there are lots of great materials to choose between.

And a lot of factors come into play when picking the best decking material for your home, like affordability, regional restrictions, and climate. Below is a detailed look at the pros and cons of all the best decking materials, whether you want to create a modern-looking deck or keep things traditional.

Marmol Radziner lined the pool with dark plaster to give the deck a more sophisticated, moody ambiance.

Paul Costello

Pressure-Treated Wood

Pros: This is by far the most popular option today, as it is used on almost 75 percent of all new decks. Since the wood has been chemically treated to withstand rot, mold, and insects, people tend to gravitate toward it for longevity—and its low price point ($1.50 to $2.50 per square foot) doesn’t hurt either. It’s available pretty much everywhere, and easy to fasten.

Cons: Maintenance is definitely an issue with this kind of decking material—it has the tendency to crack or warp over time. In the past, pressure-treated wood was treated with chromate copper arsenate, a suspected carcinogen. Now, though, it’s treated with less toxic chemicals, making it relatively safe for the home.

Tropical Hardwood

Pros: Tropical hardwoods are everywhere: ipe, cumaru, and tigerwood, just to name a few. A true luxury choice, tropical hardwoods are grainy, hard, and durable, as well as naturally resistant to issues like rotting and insects.

Papaya Playa Project, the resort in Tulum, Mexico pictured here, is the perfect place to look for decking design inspiration.

Nicole Franzen

Cons: Similar to redwood and cedar, they come with a pretty high price tag (around $8 to $12 per square foot), and are fairly dense, making it hard to drill holes into them. They don’t really accept stains or finishes very well either, so if you’re determined to add one, make sure that it’s been especially formulated for tropical hardwood. If you choose to not stain the deck, definitely apply a UV-blocking clear wood preservative every three to four years—since, like cedar and redwood, tropical hardwoods also weather to a silvery color when they’re not stained. It’s also important to know where your tropical hardwood comes from: Look for those from sustainably harvested sources.

Concrete

Pros: Versatile, practical, chic, and modern when well designed, concrete is a surprisingly good deck material option. Even better? It’s super easy to clean. You can use concrete tiles or opt for a seamless polished concrete slab for a sleeker impression.

Cons: Some may feel like it has less character than other options, and it can also get very hot in the sun.

Marmol Radziner makes a strong case for sleek-looking concrete tiles.

Exposed Aggregate

Pros: This sub-version of concrete has a lot of similar pros, including versatility and is easy to clean, as well as less expensive than other natural stone and wood types of decking materials. The difference is that aggregate concrete also offers texture and more traction, reducing the risk of slips. It also spalls and cracks less than the former.

Cons: It’s not very easy to install yourself, but other than that decision mostly come down to whether or not you like how it looks. Here’s an example of it in an elevated setting:

Redwood

Pros: Redwood is another really nice natural option, and shares several characteristics with cedar wood—the natural tannins, lightweight yet strong finish, and gorgeous color. However, redwood isn’t as easily available, particularly in the eastern regions of the country. (That might also be why it costs more than cedar: about $6 to $8 per square foot.)

Cons: It’s also important to note that both redwood and cedar require an annual power washing, as well as a coat finish every three to four years. This isn’t too intense of a maintenance program to be sure, but you definitely need to remember it!

Composites

Pros: Composite decking materials are made primarily from wood fibers and recycled plastics, and are among the fastest-growing decking options available today. Since they’ve been artificially created, they won’t warp or splinter, and they also don’t get affected by rot or insects. This makes them a really durable option since they don’t require too much maintenance.

Cons: They’re maintenance-free: Mold and mildew can grow in damp spaces, and since they’re partially wood, some composites may end up showing signs of decay. They can be on the pricier side depending on the company you pick—around $7 to $10 per square foot—and you have to make sure that you choose a reputed, high-quality company.

Bluestone

Pros: Bluestone is rich color in color, it’s organic, and it integrates well with traditional architecture. It’s also a great nonslip surface when wet, making it particularly well-suited for rainy regions or backyards with swimming pools.

Cons: Bluestone can get uncomfortably hot when the sun is beating down on it in; travertine is a cool-to-the-touch stone alternative. Expect to spend about $4-$8 per square foot, according to ImproveNet.com.

Cedar

Pros: Most purists love cedar and redwood decks, particularly due to their gorgeous, rich color. Cedarwood has a lovely natural hue and is widely available throughout the US. It’s also extremely lightweight, yet strong, making it ideal for places with inclement weather conditions. It contains tannins and naturally occurring oils that make it resistant to rot and insects, but you can also treat it with a stain and sealer to prevent cracks or splinters. Note, also, that if you don’t use protectants, the color of your cedar will change to a soft grey over time.

Cons: The main issue is the price, averaging at about $3.75 to $5 per square foot. And note that all types of cedar aren’t the same: The four best grades of cedar to use for decking are architect clear, custom clear, architect knotty, and custom knotty (listed from clearest to most knotty). So the nicer you go, the more it’s going to cost you.

Don’t forget to accessorize with fun towels!

Grass

Pros: Contemporary, natural, peaceful, and colorful, turn your deck into a grassy lawn. It’s also cheaper to install than others if you seed (think: 8 to 30 cents per square foot!)

Cons: Keep in mind that grass needs sun exposure to thrive. And if you use it as your decking material around a saltwater swimming pool, it can get brown spots when the water splashes it.

Aluminum

Pros: You might have never seen an aluminum deck before, but they do exist. They’re convenient in a lot of ways: They won’t rust, warp, splinter, rot, or crack, and they’re weather and mold-resistant as well. Since you don’t have to worry about insects, it’s extremely easy to take care of them, and they’ll never peel or blister. You’ll also be happy to know that when compared with wood, composite, and plastic lumber, aluminum decking is three to four times lighter, yet two to three times stronger.

Cons: Good things don’t come cheap—the most expensive of all the options, aluminum comes in at an average of $11 per square foot, with some companies going even higher than that. It also doesn’t have the gorgeous color of hardwood, so be sure that’s a look you’re willing to sacrifice for convenience.

There are so many varieties of decking material that it’s difficult to know which one is best. We are here to help you make sense of all the options.

View in gallery

After all, each situation is different, and what is best for you might not work for someone else.

It all depends on your budget, the time you plan to spend in your home, and the ways you use your outdoor spaces.

Types of Decking Material

There are four main types of decking material to consider: wood, plastic, fiberglass, and aluminum. Each has benefits and drawbacks, so you need to evaluate each material to see which is the right material for your needs.

Wood Decking

View in gallery

Wood is one of the most popular decking materials both in the past and in our current time. For many homeowners, there is just nothing like the look and feel of real wood decking when considering options for their outdoor decking material. Within the broad category of wood decking, there are many options to consider.

Pressure Treated Wood

View in gallery

Pressure-treated wood is one of the most cost-effective choices for decking material overall. Manufacturers take Southern yellow pine and put it through a chemical process to harden it and make it more resistant to insects and moisture.

However, while this wood is inexpensive, it does require constant maintenance like coats of stain and sealer and pressure washing to keep it looking its best. Also, decks made from pressure-treated wood will require sanding to keep them splinter-free. Even so, these boards will crack, warp, and shrink over time and exposure to harsh weather.

Cedar and Redwood

View in gallery

Cedar and Redwood decking are also a popular choices with homeowners. These are both woods with lovely, rich color and inherent beauty. In addition, they contain natural tannins that make them resist rot and insects.

Redwood decking is more expensive than pressure-treated wood and has about the same maintenance requirements. Cedar is more abundant and less expensive. than redwood and requires the same upkeep as pressure-treated wood and redwood.

Exposure to the full sun will fade the natural color and cause these boards to shrink and split. Therefore, be prepared to pressure wash these decks and apply a sunblocking stain and sealer at least every three years to avoid fine splits developing in the wood decking and to preserve the color of the wood.

Tropical Hardwoods

View in gallery

If money is no object, exotic hardwoods make for a beautiful and lasting deck. The most popular tropical hardwoods used for decking material are Ipe, Tigerwood, Garapa, and Teak.

  • Ipe – Ipe is a Brazilian hardwood that is the most popular type of exotic woods used for decks. It is a dense wood with beautiful natural color and texture. With the proper maintenance, this wood decking will last 40-50 years without needing to be replaced.
  • Tigerwood – As its name suggests, Tigerwood has a gorgeous striped pattern. It is a dense hardwood and has a natural resistance to rot, but unlike other hardwoods, it has a smaller lifespan of about 25 years.
  • Garapa – Also known as Brazilian Ash, Garapa has a light golden color and density that is similar to other hardwoods. It has a natural resistance to rot and insects, and it is a more affordable option than other exotic wood deck material.
  • Teak – Teak is considered one of the best deck material options because of its natural oils which allow you to avoid all the routine maintenance of stain and sealants. However, because of its natural properties, it is also an expensive option.

Pros and Cons of Wood Deck Boards

Natural wood is a popular choice for decking, but it is not the right option for everyone.

Pros:

  • Appearance – People love the look and feel of a real wood deck. While synthetic decking materials will try to mimic this look, it is never the same as natural wood decking.
  • Cost – Pressure-treated lumber is the most cost-effective form of decking material.

Cons:

  • Maintenance – Wood decking is some of the most labor-intensive deck materials as they need maintenance on an ongoing basis.
  • Durability – Most wood decking other than exotic hardwoods, will need to be replaced quicker than synthetic decking material.

Plastic Decking

View in gallery

There are three main categories of plastic decking: polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) are full plastic while composite decking materials are constructed from plastic and wood composite.

PVC Decking

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) decking is a modern decking option that allows you to build a deck that is long-lasting and virtually maintenance-free. These boards mimic the look of natural wood and have additives that make it rot and insect repellant.

In addition, these boards can be recycled after use which gives them a smaller environmental impact than wood boards.

HDPE Decking

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) decking is similar to PVC decking in that it is 100% plastic. It also tries to replicate the look and feel of natural wood with wood colors and wood grain patterns.

However, unlike PVC decking, it does not give off toxic chemicals as a result of its production.

Composite Decking

View in gallery

Composite decking material is crafted from a combination of wood fibers and plastic. These boards have a look that resembles wood more than plastic decking. Also, it is more comfortable on bare feet than 100% plastic boards. While not maintenance-free, this is a low-maintenance material that does not require the same upkeep as a wooden deck.

Pros and Cons of Plastic Decking

Plastic and wood composite decking work well for some people, but there are also reasons why it doesn’t work for everyone.

Pros:

  • Maintenance – Decks made from plastic require very low maintenance in order to keep looking great.
  • Durability – These types of decks are durable and last anywhere from 25-50 years.
  • Environmental impact – Some of these products are made from recycled plastic and many of them can be recycled after use.

Cons:

  • Appearance – While manufacturers are trying to mimic the look of real wood, plastic decking still looks like a synthetic material rather than natural wood.
  • Cost – This is one of the more expensive materials for decking.
  • Feel – Plastic boards get very hot in the sun and can feel uncomfortable on bare feet. Wood composite decking is more comfortable that 100% plastic decks.

Fiberglass Decking

View in gallery

Fiberglass is a synthetic option that works very well in environments with extreme temperatures. Yet, it is also a good option for homeowners in moderate climates because it creates a durable deck that is resistant to moisture and insects.

Fiberglass Pros and Cons

Fiberglass is not a common option for decks, but it does work well in some situations.

Pros:

  • Durability – This is a long-lasting solution as these decks can last 25-30 years with the correct maintenance.
  • All-weather – Fiberglass is good in extreme temperatures like in areas of the far north that are exposed to harsh winters.

Cons:

  • Cost – The initial monetary outlay for a fiberglass deck is high.
  • Appearance – Many people do not like the look of fiberglass decks as their smooth surface is not like wood. Also, there are not the same range of color options available as with other synthetics.

Aluminum Decking

View in gallery

Aluminum decking is one of the smallest subsets for deck material, but it is a great option for some people. Because it is synthetic, it will not need constant maintenance like wood decking. It is not subject to rot and decay, nor does it attract insects.

Also, it is a durable option that will last around 20 years with proper upkeep. However, while the look of aluminum decking tries to mimic that of natural wood, it cannot capture the texture and look of real wood.

Pros and Cons of Aluminum Decking

Aluminum decking works very well in some situations like around swimming pools, but it has some drawbacks to consider as well.

Pros:

  • Durability – This is a long-lasting decking material option. It will last around 20 or more with the proper maintenance.
  • Feel – While darker aluminum decks will get hot in the sun, because these boards have a hollow core, they cool down fast. Also, most aluminum decking has a non-skid surface that keeps users from slipping.
  • Maintenance – Constant maintenance is not required to keep these decks looking fantastic.

Cons:

  • Cost – Aluminum decking materials are more expensive than other options like wood. However, if you stay in your home for many years, the cost will be more worth it as you will not need to replace your decking boards as much as with real wood.
  • Appearance – Many people do not like the synthetic look of these boards compared to real wood.

Cost of Decking Materials

Cost is an important factor when you are thinking about deck material. The average person will spend anywhere from $3,000-$8,000 on a new deck. Let’s consider the cost of each material per square foot. These ranges do not include installation costs.

  • Pressure-treated wood – $4-$8 per square foot
  • Cedar – $4-$8 per square foot
  • Redwood – $7-$8 per square foot
  • Exotic Hardwoods – $8-$15 per square foot
  • Full plastic decking – $5-$13 per square foot
  • Wood composite decking – $4-$12 per square foot
  • Fiberglass decking – $9-$16 per square foot
  • Aluminum Decking – $15-$20 per square foot

different options for interior wall decoration of the house

There are various interior wall decoration materials on the market. The material differs in the manufacturer and its properties. Therefore, it is not always easy to decide how best to decorate the walls. The features of the modern interior are very diverse, you can often see combinations of several materials in the decoration of the room. A variety of beautiful materials will help turn walls into masterpieces of renovation art.

  • Plaster and decorative wallpaper
  • Tiling and paneling
  • Dyeing and finishing with textiles
  • Interior wall material
  • Selection of finishes taking into account the interior
  • Design Tips

Stucco and wallpaper for decoration

Wallpaper is one of the most popular interior decoration materials. Wallpaper is much easier – the variety of colors and textures is simply amazing, and even a beginner can handle gluing.

The material can be divided into several subspecies:

  1. Paper. The space made with such a coating has slightly higher sound and thermal insulation parameters. This version of the wall covering cannot be called permanent, since the base of the paper is often damaged, afraid of moisture;
  2. Vinyl. It is a strong and elastic material that lasts much longer than paper;
  3. Non-woven. Easy-to-glue wallpaper, often used for subsequent painting;
  4. Glass fiber. Expensive materials that serve for a long time, they are characterized by environmental friendliness and fire resistance;
  5. Textile. This is one of the most unusual design options. Wallpaper is a mixture of different textile fibers and glue. This option acts as an excellent thermal insulation and has soundproofing properties.
  6. Liquid wallpaper. They are often used because they are simple and easy to use. You can choose any color and shade. Also available in powder form.

But, if you want to give your house an unusual and unique look, then decorative plaster will be the best solution. Many are accustomed to using different plasters only when the walls need to be leveled and cracks repaired. But today this coating is used in the final decorative design of the walls. It has a wide variety of species, each of which has its own unique properties.

Decorative plaster will allow you to create a stylish design and an unusual structure on the surface. Plaster isolates the room a little, it can absorb extraneous sounds.

The material is divided into the following types:

  1. Structural finishing – this refers to the famous “bark beetle” and no less famous “fur coat”. After application, the wall acquires a beautiful and interesting structure, large or fine-grained;
  2. Textured layer – an option for unusual surface effects;
  3. Mineral plaster is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective treatment.

Tiling and paneling

Tile is considered the most versatile and inexpensive material. It is used for finishing various surfaces. The technology of laying tiles, although it has features, but if you follow all the rules, it is quite feasible.

Wall cladding with tiles of various sizes is a fairly popular option for decorating rooms. Tiles have many advantages, but above all, they are valued for their resistance to extreme moisture and temperature changes. Because of this, it is often used to decorate walls in the kitchen and bathroom. As a rule, this type of decoration is not used in living rooms.

Ceramic tiles are divided into the following types:

  • double fired tiles;
  • white clay material;
  • porcelain tiles;
  • individually finished tiles.

Due to the fact that the tile is laid on top of the adhesive layer, it acts as a good insulation and makes the walls thicker.

Interior wall panels available in sheets, slabs. One of the main advantages of this type of surface treatment is the ability to place an insulating layer – mineral wool or standard foam – between the wall and the decorative panel.

Internal wall panels are made of the following materials:

  1. Chipboard – only allowed to be used in a dry room, this board is poisonous;
  2. Fibreboard – only afraid of direct contact with water;
  3. Plastic – easy to clean, moisture resistant;
  4. Natural wood is the noblest and most attractive, but at the same time expensive material.

Textile dyeing and finishing

Wall painting is considered the most budget option for decorating a room. It should be noted that the paint should only be applied to a flat and clean surface.

Textile decoration is often used in recent times. True, the price is high, but this design looks quite elegant.

This finish is divided into several types:

  1. Wallpaper rolls. The structure has a textile that is attached to the bottom of the paper.
  2. Silk, linen and other materials per meter may be used for covering. There are many colors and shades on sale that can decorate almost any room.

Material for interior walls

Finishing materials for interior walls are important to choose according to the principle of their use in a particular room.

Parameters to consider when choosing a interior finishing material are as follows:

  • Air humidity;
  • Air temperature;
  • Fire safety;
  • Style.

Almost all types of wallpaper and chipboard, wood and fabrics do not like moisture, so it is better not to use them in rooms with high humidity. But they will look great in other rooms. For bathrooms, kitchens and hallways, it is better to choose PVC panels, stone or ceramic tiles.

Fire safety is very important when choosing a finishing material for the interior walls of a house. The most stable fire-resistant materials are stone, ceramics, plaster. Other materials, unfortunately, are not as strong.

Choice of finishes according to the interior

Interior wall decoration is divided into classic and modern and is selected according to preferences. Finished products are selected taking into account the conditions in which they will be used, for example, indoor humidity, air temperature, and so on.

Product features include color, texture, various patterns and more. The chosen color must necessarily match the interior of the room. If little light enters the room, then the wall cladding should be as light as possible. It is better if the walls are completely white.

Light shades visually increase the space, and the room is filled with warmth and comfort. Experts recommend using a blue wall decoration material inside the house. This creates an atmosphere of calm.

If you want to create an emotional and original interior, it is better to use bright red and orange colors. However, do not forget that such colors are contraindicated in rooms designed for families and in the nursery.

Wood paneling is recommended to give the space an office feel. Rooms decorated with this decor look just great, and visitors feel the strength and firmness of the owner of the room. This is especially true in classrooms.

When choosing several types of materials for covering the walls of one room, make sure that they do not contradict, but complement each other. For example, when decorating a room in a country style, you should not combine delicate wallpaper with futuristic or avant-garde elements.

Decorating tips

Wall decorating requires a lot of responsibility. Particularly important in this case is the preparatory stage. Before starting work, it is necessary to determine what the finishing material will be, since for each option it is necessary to prepare the walls separately.

Before work, you must remove the old coating. Everything is removed mechanically using a spatula, brush or grinder. Old fasteners are removed.

Then you can smoothly move on to processing and leveling the surface. Alignment occurs only after cleaning the walls to concrete. The wall is degreased and treated for mold. This should be done with special substances. After applying the product, the surface must be primed.

Repair is not always a pleasant experience. Although for many, this is an exciting process in which all the most daring ideas and decisions become embodied in reality. Interior decoration is the last stage in the construction of a house, during which it is important to observe all the nuances, requirements and rules for working with the material.

General recommendations for wall decoration

An incredible number of types of building materials, techniques and methods of finishing greatly facilitate the entire renovation process. But you need to know a few general rules before you start reworking.

  1. Eco friendly materials. An important aspect that must be paid attention to. This is especially true if there are allergies in the family. And in other cases, it is better if the material does not emit any toxic substances and odors.
  2. Fire resistant. The modern construction market offers many types of finishing materials tested for flammability, so there are plenty to choose from.
  3. A special approach to each room separately. Ceramic tiles on a bedroom wall would be out of place, and paper wallpaper in a kitchen might be impractical.
  4. Cost of materials. Here it is up to the owner to decide how much he is willing to spend. But remember that the most expensive is not always the best. It is quite possible to choose a quality budget option.
  5. Equally important is the ease of finishing work, especially if you do the repair yourself.
  6. Aesthetics. Everything must be combined, nothing can fall out of the overall design. Each type of finish suits its own style.

Types of decorative wall finishes in the interior of the house

After drawing up an estimate, select the color and decoration patterns. It is recommended that styles, wall design ideas, decoration of different rooms are in harmony with each other. The ideas shown in the selection of pictures will help to beautifully, inexpensively repair the walls in a house or apartment. Tips, examples of using different materials in photos will help you with ideas and solutions.

Modern solutions for wall decoration (design novelties 2021)

You can use modern fashion modifications:

  1. Glass fiber, which is a thin glass yarn in rolls. Harmful microorganisms do not appear on them, they are painted at will. Harmless durable wallpapers look presentable, not without reason they decorate restaurants and bars. Minus – complex installation and dismantling, high cost and the need for perfect evenness of the wall.
  2. A textile variety containing linen, velor, felt, etc. The material absorbs sound and retains heat, resists sun fading and will last for ten years. Upholstery will decorate the child’s room, silk will give the living room an image of a chic salon, and felt and velor fabrics will bring a cozy atmosphere to the bedroom. The disadvantage is a decent price, regular cleaning and a weakness for mechanics, panels require smooth planes, and the master needs knowledge of the specifics of gluing.
  3. Jute is a natural, breathable and light-resistant vegetable fabric that does not cause allergies, successfully used in minimalism, eco and ethnic branches. Of the shortcomings, the absorption of odors and significant financial costs for the acquisition are noted.
  4. Cork with bactericidal properties, thanks to which a beneficial microclimate is guaranteed. It has excellent insulating qualities and a pleasant surface. Cork raw material does not ignite and does not support the flame, but it has a poor palette and a tangible price, although this is justified by long-term operation.
  5. Linkrust, which contains wood flour, wax, rosin, linseed oil. Patterned exterior gives the interior a respectable image. The material stands out for its safety, resistance to deformation, incombustibility, extensive range and easy maintenance. Its validity is actually eternal, which is confirmed by the remaining fragments in old mansions. However, mounting is complicated and costly.

Also in demand are metallized embossed, blackened, etched, patinated, painted wallpapers, loved by hi-tech, art deco, empire. The foil layer promises good thermal insulation performance, and the specularity visually expands the spatial boundaries.

  • strength;
  • durability;
  • availability;
  • reasonable price;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • sound and noise insulation properties;
  • compatibility of structural components;
  • features of operation and use.

Characteristics that are taken into account during the selection:

  • color solutions;
  • style;
  • invoice;
  • drawing;
  • fastening or installation features.

Natural lighting of the room is also taken into account.

If there is not enough light in the rooms during the day, it is recommended to select finishing materials in light colors. They have the ability to visually enlarge the space, create a cozy, comfortable environment .

To achieve a peaceful, calm mood in the house, it is recommended to choose a finish in blue and blue colors. Such a decorative finish will look advantageous in any room, refreshing the atmosphere, harmoniously combined with furniture of various colors and textures.

Wallpaper for decorating rooms is selected depending on:

  • from the invoice;
  • stylistic decisions;
  • the presence of additional decorations, such as sequins;
  • purpose of the premises in which they will be glued.

For example, finishing materials for the walls of the kitchen, bathroom, it is recommended to choose taking into account moisture resistance, resistance to dirt, the possibility of wet cleaning using cleaners, detergents. For the nursery, eco-friendly wallpapers with bright decor and sparkles are chosen. In the bedroom and children’s room, it is not recommended to choose aggressive tones, such as red and orange.

Finishing surfaces in the corridor, decorating the walls in the hallway is appropriate to carry out with wallpaper for painting, as the walls in this room get dirty faster.

Facing ceramic tiles in the house are used as the main material or as a decorative element. A variety of color and texture solutions, practicality and durability allow it to be used for zoning rooms made in a variety of styles. Often, tiles are used if it is necessary to highlight some element in a design project, for example, a fireplace.

Natural and artificial stone is often used to decorate the walls inside the house. It looks extremely attractive in open areas of space, creates original compositions, serves as an element of decoration and an interesting accent, participating in the formation of a noble, original style. It is worth noting that the artificial stone in terms of external qualities and characteristics is in no way inferior to the natural one. On the contrary, it has many advantages, among which it is worth highlighting the affordable cost, ease of installation and maintenance, high wear resistance.

However, the use of such decorative materials is mainly allowed in large rooms. For small rooms, it is recommended to use light shades, non-textured decor components, or focus on only one design element, otherwise the room will look cluttered and too bright.

When selecting suitable materials for wall decoration, the humidity present in the rooms is taken into account. For example, for wall cladding in rooms with high humidity, the use of wooden lining is inappropriate. The lining does not tolerate such an environment, quickly loses its appearance and original attractiveness. It is advisable not to use plastic lining inside the premises, it is suitable mainly for cladding balconies from the inside and outside.

When choosing a finish, it is necessary to take into account sound insulation, density level, installation complexity, the possibility of creating irregular geometric shapes. It is also important to pay attention to the need for further installation of decorative elements with the choice of the method of fastening such structures.

The weight of the decorative elements plays an important role: it will be difficult to install an artificial stone structure on a plasterboard wall. In addition, it can make the structure heavier, which, in turn, will lead to the appearance of cracks, distortions and other inconsistencies on the surface of the walls, the appearance of which will be completely ruined.

For rooms with high humidity it is not recommended to choose:

  • chipboard and wood panels;
  • wallpaper of all kinds, fabric coverings;
  • natural wood elements without special treatment.

In case of high humidity, the best option would be to paint the walls, since paints and varnishes tolerate high humidity better, do not change texture for a long time of operation in such an environment.

To create additional volume, a special decorative plaster is selected. When choosing, it is necessary to take into account the level of density and the rate of solidification. It allows you to implement interesting design ideas in a variety of styles.

Finishing materials for interior walls are also classified according to the level of fire safety. For example, natural and artificial stone is resistant to high temperatures, not combustible. Plaster, ceramic tiles and decorative fireproof elements have the same properties.

This type of cladding material has a high level of strength and is used as a frame to create structures. In this category, PVC slats are also very popular.

Wall finishing materials

More recently, the walls in private houses were simply covered with plaster, which was painted with water-based paints or wallpaper was glued on them. Even earlier, the walls were simply whitewashed with lime. Today, the variety of materials used for wall decoration is so huge that it becomes more and more difficult to choose every year. Therefore, most consumers seek advice from professional designers who have information about all finishing materials. They are like a fish in water in this category of building materials.

So, let’s figure out what finishing materials exist.

Wallpaper

This material is still very popular today. Moreover, a rather large variety of it appeared on the market:

  • paper;
  • non-woven;
  • vinyl;
  • cullet;
  • photo wallpaper;
  • metallised;
  • and other, other, other .

The assortment is wide, the choice is huge both in terms of color, texture and structure. Manufacturers even offer paintable wallpaper. They have an original white color, which can be repainted up to 15 times, choosing any paint.

In fact, wallpapers are still popular and the demand for them is not decreasing. The reason is an incredibly huge number of species and subspecies. At the same time, the market offers wallpapers that imitate other building materials. For example, brick, stone, sand, leather, wood, and so on. That is, you can make a unique interior in your home with small funds, decorating it in any style.

The only requirement for the wallpapering process is that the wall is flat. Therefore, wall surfaces are carefully plastered, puttied and polished. If the house is wooden, then its walls are covered with plywood or drywall, today they have been replaced by OSB boards. It is the alignment of the surface of the walls that increases the cost of finishing materials. By themselves, the wallpaper is an inexpensive material, of course, in comparison with other materials.

As for the choice of wallpaper, some criteria should be noted:

  • paper wallpapers are short-lived , afraid of moisture and temperature changes;
  • Vinyl wallpapers are the thickest , they easily cover small wall defects and plane differences;
  • under non-woven it is obligatory to lay a leveling layer of light color, because this type of wallpaper is translucent and all dark spots appear through them;
  • if it is correct in the interior design of the room, choose photo wallpaper , then they will fit perfectly into the room;
  • today you can use where the owner of the house chooses a drawing, pattern or photograph.

Paints

Let’s start with the fact that wall decoration in a private house with paints is at the peak of popularity. Their variety on the market is not as large as that of wallpaper, but they are represented by a good line. We must immediately make a reservation that for painting the walls are necessarily aligned to the maximum. Often masters apply several layers of finishing putty to achieve the perfect result.
What paint manufacturers offer:

  • Acrylic paints . After drying, this material forms a durable film on the walls, which can even be washed with water. The colors of acrylic paints are bright, saturated. But this material belongs to the category of “non-breathing”.
  • Silicone . This is a breathable material that is applied to the surface of the walls with a fairly thick layer, so it covers minor defects and flaws well. Forms a strong film. The disadvantage is the high price.
  • Silicate . They are based on liquid glass, hence the excellent strength characteristics. But for the same reason, it is impossible to apply another material to a wall covered with silicate paint. If repairs are required, then this paint coating will have to be disposed of. In this case, the paint itself falls only on mineral surfaces: plaster or putty. It is better not to use metal, polymers, wood under silicate paint – peel off.
Paints – the whole design palette

Wall paints are a huge scope for your creative ideas. The modern market offers a huge selection of paint and varnish products for different purposes. There are basic, water-based paints. This is the cheapest way to paint walls.

Wall paints – this is a space for your creative ideas

But if you want something unusual, extraordinary, I advise you to pay attention to textured paints. With their help, you can create a creative interior in any chosen style.

Textured paints can imitate various natural materials. They go very well with plastered walls, creating a unique interior.

Textured paints to create comfort

I present you a small overview of some of the types. Mizuri – contains acrylic resins. It can be smooth or embossed, according to your desire. Can be used in almost any space.

A beautiful finish for any room

Marseille wax – applied with a special wax. An interesting texture that imitates natural stone or tree bark. You can meet in the apartment, and in an expensive restaurant.

Textured paint always looks spectacular

Atacama is an acrylic based paint with the addition of quartz sand and metallic pigment. Thanks to this composition, it creates a stunning velvety surface and reflects light. It can be interesting to use in the design of the room.

Velvet surface thanks to paint

Relief – easy to apply paint. On a flat wall painted in the base color, a screen pattern is applied with a roller. The pattern is your choice. Of all the textured paints – the most inexpensive, but at the same time a very effective option.

Any drawing to match your interior style

But paint is not just a banal wall painting, it can be a drawing that will become a real piece of art right in your home. It can be done by a professional artist, or you can do it yourself.

A little imagination and a desire to make something in the interior with your own hands – that’s all you need. And how to do it – you can peep at the professionals. There is a lot of useful information and videos on the Internet on this topic. Be interested, and perhaps you can do just as well.

The desire to do something in the interior with your own hands – that’s all you need

Decorative plaster

Decorative plaster is available on the market in many variations, easy to use and does not require long surface preparation. Unlike ordinary plaster, it is used only for the final decoration of the surface. A variety of application techniques makes do-it-yourself wall decoration accessible to everyone, and the material itself is universal and always relevant.

Subspecies of textured plaster, as you might guess from the name, differ in the texture of the resulting coating. So, Venetian plaster imitates marble stains, which makes it extremely aesthetic and more and more popular.

Liquid wallpaper is essentially neither wallpaper nor plaster. They are a liquid mixture based on natural materials (silk, cellulose). They are easy to apply, environmentally friendly and durable. In case of damage, repair is carried out pointwise only in a specific area. Of the shortcomings, one can single out the high cost.

Drywall

Drywall

Suitable for leveling walls, creating special boxes that hide pipes and communications. With the help of GKL, you can create shelves and niches in the walls, build partitions, interior buildings, decorative arches.

The blade is offered with different compound and core treatments, the main ones are:

  • Moisture resistant. GKLV.
  • Refractory. GKLO.
  • Plain. GKL.
  • Moisture and fire resistant. GKLVO.

Suitable for all types of premises. It is easy to install, an ideal way to create a smooth wall, but does not have decorative properties and requires a finishing coating with plaster and subsequent sealing of joints, for further decoration under wallpaper, tiles, panels, paint.

Cork

Consists of cork tree bark, oak. Manufacturers process the material with special solutions, wax, which adds protective and moisture-resistant abilities to them. Of the aesthetic features, they are characterized by individuality, naturalness and the formation of a cozy space with warm shades with a natural cork pattern.

Available as:

  • Panels or tiles.
  • With a double layer of cork and veneer on the top.
    In roll form. One and two layers (substrate, wallpaper, completely made of cork)
  • Panel. With artistic images, in the form of large slabs, multi-layered like panels.

Special glue is used during installation, corners and connecting elements are purchased in addition to the coating, all work can be done by one’s own hands. Hides small imperfections well. The cork does not burn, does not emit harmful substances, and with a density of 3 mm or more it creates good sound insulation and does not conduct heat. Applies to all rooms. Expensive items.

Clapboard

As already mentioned, the traditional solution is sheathing and insulation of a wooden house with wooden materials. Lining – these are ordinary boards, equipped with special grooves for tightly adjoining them to each other.

Floor and walls of the house, sheathed with wooden clapboard

Previously, this material was used to sheathe the inner surface of the walls of the cars of the royal trains – hence this unusual name arose.

The main disadvantage of clapboard cladding is considered to be some stereotype of this option. Indeed, many people are now resorting to this method of interior design. Therefore, for champions of individuality, lining is not the best choice. However, with its help you can get:

  • eco-friendly wood finish;
  • large selection of wood species and quality categories;
  • various types of external surface treatment;
  • the unique aroma of fresh wood for many years.

It is best to mount the lining on a pre-assembled frame made of metal or wooden bars. In this way, any existing wall irregularities are easily eliminated.

For this purpose, a metal profile is excellent, which is used to work with drywall. To fasten the board to the crate, special hidden elements are usually used – clamps. If the frame is wooden, you can use the old method of fastening with nails.

Liquid wallpaper

They have nothing to do with roll subspecies. Create a uniform smooth surface without joints and seams. Manufacturers offer a dry mix, which is diluted with water and applied to the base with a spatula and grater.

They have various fillers and are divided into types;

  • silk,
  • cellulose,
  • cotton blends, and blended.

The composition determines the qualities of each sheet. Durable, have good soundproofing properties, are used in different rooms, and may even be suitable for kitchens and bathrooms, depending on the basic composition. Do not apply to areas near direct contact with water. They are quite simple to use, you can create artistic illustrations, they easily hide small irregularities and surface roughness, installation does not require special skills. High term of use up to 15 years.

3D panels

More often in this category, these are boards containing gypsum material, but other compositions are also used.

Volumetric panels are made from:

  • Gypsum.
  • Cane.
  • Plastic.
  • Glass.
  • Wood.
  • Bamboo.
  • Aluminium.
  • Porcelain stoneware.
  • MDF, chipboard, wood fiber types.
  • With imitation and genuine leather.

All canvases are different in their characteristics, they can be compared in one row thanks to the beautiful three-dimensional external pattern, and if you decide to create a unique beautiful environment in your home, you can consider one of these proposed options. Typically, such materials are used for decorating with fragments, to emphasize certain positions, so that there is no oversaturation of convex shapes.

MDF panels

Produced on the basis of wood shavings (finely dispersed fraction), which is glued together at a certain temperature and under pressure, forming a single layer, a solid panel of medium density. The top layer can be smooth, embossed, glossy, matte, with different shapes, with a laminated or colorful coating, with or without additionally applied decorative particles.

Decorative upper part can be made:

  • from cork and other types of wood,
  • covered with paint, varnish,
  • and applying polymer bases in the form of a film, laminating.

Harmless substances are used in the manufacture. Reliable, moisture resistant, suitable for all types of premises, with a long service life of up to 15 years.

Requirements for finishing materials

  4. Technical and performance data.

  • abrasion;
  • resistance to temperature changes;
  • Sun resistance;
  • ease of care finish.

For a bathroom, toilet, combined bathroom and kitchen, you need to choose materials that have increased moisture and bacteria resistance, as well as the possibility of regular wet cleaning.

When furnishing the bedroom and children’s room, preference should be given to environmentally friendly and breathable wall coverings that do not attract dust.

When choosing colors in the bedroom, you should give preference to pastel colors. In rooms with a minimum amount of natural light, wall decoration is carried out with materials of light shades

The walls of the entrance hall, corridor and living room are recommended to be finished with wear-resistant and durable material, due to the high attendance of these premises and their high traffic.

Despite the large number of different materials on the market, the most popular are:

  1. Traditional wallpapers.
  2. Different types of plaster.
  3. Paint.
  4. Wooden lining.
  5. Ceramic tiles.

Laminated or plastic lining and artificial stone can be distinguished from the cladding, which has recently become fashionable.

Tips and tricks

If the work is planned in a wooden house, then you should take care of high-quality moisture and heat insulation, for example, make a layer of foam or tow.

If the building consists of foam blocks, then the finishing material is selected insensitive to temperature changes, for example, it is possible to isolate the surface with drywall, which can be post-processed with any material.

Moisture-resistant building materials are selected for rooms with high humidity. For living rooms it is recommended to use environmentally friendly materials

    The choice of material for wall decoration

    Materials for interior decoration of the walls of the house are varied, among them there are both available to everyone and exclusive options. The choice depends on the preferences of the owner of the house, the general style of the room and the amount that is supposed to be spent on repairs. In this article, we will talk about the types of finishing materials, their advantages and disadvantages, performance properties, and also give some recommendations that can help you choose.

    Finishing materials: what the modern construction market offers

    Modern materials for wall decoration in an apartment – this is the widest range of wallpapers, decorative plaster, natural and artificial stone, ceramics. Increasingly, preference is given to those types of wall decoration that are environmentally friendly and do not cause allergies. At the same time, attention is also paid to the service life of materials, because not everyone is ready to redo repairs every year. So, let’s get acquainted with the materials.

    wallpapers

    Wallpaper has been the most familiar and affordable option for many years. Today they are not only paper, but also vinyl, non-woven, textile, cork, acrylic, etc. In addition to the usual drawings, huge paintings, photographs, 3D images are available.

    Paper wallpapers are easy to stick, they can be quickly changed if necessary. Children’s rooms are decorated with simple wallpaper with funny drawings – this is very practical, since kids often draw on the walls, the surface is often smeared with plasticine, glue. Multi-layer types of this coating with embossed patterns are in demand for living rooms and bedrooms. Hallways are often covered with paint-like wallpaper, which is also convenient. The main disadvantages of the material:

    • short service life – only expensive varieties, multi-layered, primed, withstand 5 years or more without loss of appearance;
    • is highly flammable;
    • does not tolerate moisture well;
    • fades when exposed to ultraviolet light.

    Photo wallpapers are usually produced with a protective coating, which allows you to avoid fading and not be afraid of exposure to moisture, but the service life still does not exceed 6-7 years. In addition, even surfaces are preferred for ordinary wallpaper, but the presence of roughness is not critical, and photo wallpapers need absolutely even walls.

    Textile wallpapers on paper or non-woven base are gaining more and more popularity. Silk, linen, velour, other threads are used. Linen combined with paper is an eco-friendly option that is ideal for a bedroom, nursery. Silk is usually preferred for decorating a living room in a classic style. If additional thermal insulation is needed, it is worth trying models on a synthetic porous base, the thickness of which reaches 5 mm.

    Cork wallpapers look interesting. They are produced on a paper or non-woven basis, natural, environmentally friendly. Suitable for eco-style, country, minimalism. The same applies to jute wallpapers, which also significantly increase the degree of sound insulation, in this case, decorating the walls with decorative material can even get rid of neighbors’ complaints about piano exercises.

    Up to 20 years comes the life of vinyl wallpaper. They are diverse, not afraid of water, steam, they can be used in the kitchen. But airtightness, often an unpleasant smell, are serious drawbacks.

    Non-woven wallpaper can be classified as a separate group. On the basis of non-woven fabric, paper, vinyl varieties of the material are produced. Advantages – environmental friendliness, breathability, the availability of a large number of patterns, a service life of up to 10 years. Disadvantages: high price, difficult maintenance, the need for absolutely clean walls, otherwise stains will appear on the wallpaper.

    Plaster

    There are several types of plaster for facing materials for finishing walls inside the house.

    Flock, silk plaster is called liquid wallpaper. Advantages: beautiful appearance, interesting texture, good coating strength, ease of restoration. breathability. Service life – up to 8 years. Suitable for bedrooms, living rooms, children’s rooms, hallways. The disadvantage is the limited choice of colors and patterns compared to wallpaper.

    A good way to level, insulate and insulate walls is to apply decorative plaster on them. This is a general term for building and decorative mixtures for wall decoration. They are mineral-based, silicate, silicone and acrylic. The simplest wall decoration, if you choose from options with plaster, is a cement-based material, to which chemical components are added that increase moisture resistance. Advantages:

    • allows air to pass through;
    • is not afraid of steam;
    • shows resistance to fungus and mold;
    • environmental friendliness;
    • fire safety.

    There are few drawbacks, but they are significant – a narrow range of colors, the complexity of application.

    Textured plaster contains fibers, pebbles, broken brick particles, which makes it look like natural stone, dug velvet. Aged wood, etc. Beautiful, elegant, stylish, so it suits different rooms: bedroom and dining room, hallway and living room. Serves up to 20 years.

    Paint

    There are a lot of varieties of paints. The most environmentally friendly are water-based, there are also acrylic, alkyd, silicone, oil, etc. Inexpensive, fast, convenient. It is easy to choose options for colors and shades, coatings are matte, glossy and textured, the latter allow you to hide bumps on the walls.

    PVC panels

    A simple and inexpensive solution for wall decoration, unlike other types of materials, PVC panels differ in ease of installation, low weight, especially when compared with natural or artificial stone. Suitable for bathrooms, kitchens. To date, wall panels with a thickness of 3 mm are popular, inside of which there are no voids, earlier models, which consisted of two layers of plastic connected by jumpers, were easily pressed through. Plastic is easy to clean, not afraid of detergents based on acids and alkalis. There are many color options. Weaknesses:

    • plastic is resistant to mechanical damage, scratches quickly appear on it;
    • fades in the sun;
    • under the influence of high temperatures, during fires, releases toxic substances into the air;
    • airtight;
    • is unstable to benzene and acetone.

    3D panels

    Designers use 3D panels to create unique interiors. These are piece products that are made from various materials (gypsum, plastic, wood, glass, etc.), and then assembled in abstraction, sometimes imitating brick, wood, stone. From exclusive details that are made to order, paintings or photographic images are assembled in the form of mosaics. The properties of the panels, their durability, resistance to moisture, mechanical stress depend on the selected material. It is worth noting that the tiles are usually produced with an impregnation that protects them from burning.

    3D panels look good in living rooms and bedrooms, in hallways, on closed terraces of houses.

    Ceramic

    One of the modern options for wall decoration is full-length ceramics, a durable, beautiful, environmentally friendly and human health finishing material. Porcelain stoneware wall panels have a number of advantages:

    • are made with a matte, glossy, textured surface;
    • manufacturers offer various color solutions, products with a natural stone pattern, which allows the use of the material in rooms that are decorated in different styles;
    • strength, durability;
    • does not absorb moisture, does not interact with chemically active substances – acids and alkalis, which greatly facilitates maintenance;
    • heat resistance, non-flammable;
    • retains its original appearance for a long time, does not fade under the influence of ultraviolet rays;
    • on ceramics do not live and do not develop fungus and mold.

    The only serious disadvantage of full-length ceramics is the rather high cost.

    Quartz

    A relatively new material for indoor wall decoration is quartz agglomerate. It would not be entirely correct to call it an artificial stone, since at least 90% of it consists of natural components – quartz sand and quartz chips. Also, a coloring pigment and polyester resins are added to the mixture, which makes the stone very hard and durable. Available in a wide range of colors and shades, including those that mimic the patterns of natural marble and granite.

    Advantages of quartz agglomerate:

    • resistance to mechanical damage – difficult to scratch, rarely chipped;
    • durability – the minimum service life of the coating – several decades;
    • will not fade even when exposed to direct sunlight;
    • does not interact with chemically active substances;
    • is environmentally friendly, does not cause allergies in humans and animals;
    • suits different styles – classic, strict empire, luxurious baroque, modern – minimalism and hi-tech, loft, country;
    • is waterproof due to its very dense structure, it does not deform under the influence of water, therefore it is suitable for finishing bathrooms, kitchens, spa areas in the house;
    • does not absorb dirt;
    • is easy to clean – a soapy solution and a soft cloth are enough for cleaning;
    • slabs are available in different surface finishes — glossy, matte, semi-gloss, textured.

    Agglomerate also has disadvantages:

    • heavy weight requiring strong walls and professional installation;
    • high cost.

    Natural stone

    The building materials used for wall decoration are also natural stones. Most often prefer marble, granite, travertine, onyx. Consider the features of the breeds.

    Granite
    1. Very hard and durable, it is difficult to break even on purpose, the granite panel will not get scratches, chips, if not specially applied.
    2. Does not interact with acids and alkalis, fungus and mold do not appear on it.
    3. The service life is almost infinite.
    4. Moisture and heat resistant.
    5. Variety of colors – black, red, green, pink. Grey, with numerous inclusions and a unique pattern.

    The use of granite for finishing work requires preliminary accurate calculations, as the stone has a large weight. Granite can accumulate radiation, so you need to ask the manufacturer for a stone certificate when buying. The price depends on the type of stone, some rare varieties are even more expensive than common varieties of marble.

    Marble

    The material has a number of advantages:

    • unique in their beauty drawings, so it has been used to decorate the interiors of houses for many centuries;
    • is considered a breathable material, due to the presence of pores, it creates a special, human-friendly microclimate in the house;
    • is a fairly soft stone, so it lends itself well to processing – it is easy to cut and grind, polish;
    • does not accumulate radiation, therefore it is suitable for any premises.

    The disadvantages – and serious ones – include the fact that marble is difficult to care for. Over time, spots appear on it that cannot be removed, as dirt and moisture penetrate deep into the stone. In addition, chemically aggressive cleaning agents should not be used, as they destroy the structure of the stone. It lends itself poorly to restoration. Marble is very expensive, especially rare varieties.

    Travertine

    Travertine is much lighter than granite and marble and can be worked well. The stone is porous, if used as a coating, it increases the heat and sound insulation properties of the walls. Resistant to moisture. It lends itself well to processing, slabs are produced with a polished, ground surface, embossed. Travertine usually comes in soothing tones (brown, sand, gray), a beautiful pattern appears during processing. Environmentally friendly, affordable. Like marble, it is difficult to maintain due to its porosity. Suitable for hallways, living rooms, but it is better not to use in bathrooms.

    Onyx

    Extraordinarily beautiful translucent stone. The layered structure provides unique patterns. If you use backlighting, then the living room turns into a fabulous cave or a real palace. Onyx is very durable and dense, does not absorb moisture, and is resistant to mechanical stress. Has bactericidal properties, environmentally friendly. Good thermal insulator. The main disadvantage is the high cost.

    What to choose

    When choosing, it is still important to build on your habits and preferences. If you like to change the situation often, the appearance of the premises, wallpaper is best suited. 3D panels will give an unusual look to the room, especially since they are easy to assemble.

    If you need a quick budget renovation of a bathroom or kitchen, it is convenient to use plastic panels that are easy to install and then replace.

    The best materials for decorating the walls of a room, when it comes to repairs that are designed for many years, are full-length ceramics and stone. These materials will serve for decades, thanks to their beauty, they do not bother. Given the characteristics of natural stone and its cost, it is better to prefer quartz agglomerate, which repeats the patterns of natural stone and at the same time has much higher performance.

    In addition, more and more designers are choosing quartz and full-format ceramics, as these materials are produced in 3000×1500 mm slabs. This allows you to do with a minimum of seams during finishing work and achieve the ideal appearance of the room in terms of aesthetics.

    Of course, we must not forget that different materials correspond to different styles. It is difficult to imagine an office in a classic style, which will be decorated with voluminous 3D panels or plastered. It is better to use wallpaper with a classic pattern, stone or even paint in soothing colors. Almost the only material that fits into most styles is stone. Its beauty, elegance will give the house a unique charm, create comfort for many years.

    Types of materials for finishing the facade of a private house: how to finish the facade

    The technology and materials for finishing the facades of houses are thought over at the design stage. The appearance of the building should fit into the landscape, be neat and beautiful. In addition to the decorative function, facade decoration also performs purely practical tasks – it insulates, soundproofs the building, protects load-bearing structures from moisture, wind, steam, and temperature extremes. Facade cladding must be hygienic, resistant to the destructive effects of fungi, mold, which often cause microcracks in the walls. How to choose a material for finishing the facade of a private house? What to focus on?

    Stroyrynok offers a wide variety of materials. Choosing how to finish the facade of the house, buyers most often stop at these:

    • decorative plaster;
    • clinker finishing bricks and tiles;
    • porcelain stoneware;
    • siding;
    • sandwich panels;
    • stone – natural and artificial;
    • facade cassettes.

    Each of these materials has its own advantages and disadvantages. Prices vary significantly. When designing a house, it is necessary to determine in advance the budget for the purchase of finishing materials. Their pros, cons and specific properties will be discussed below.

    • 8 What to choose?

    Plastering of the front of the house is considered the most “ancient” type of decoration. In recent decades, unique plaster materials have appeared, designed for finishing various types of building materials.

    There are many types of smooth and textured facade plasters. Wall application technologies also differ markedly. This nuance should be taken into account and carefully study the instructions for the types of material you like

    Due to the wide range and reasonable cost, facade plaster does not lose its popularity. Its benefits:

    • Aesthetics. Huge variety of colors, many textures. If desired, each owner can create a unique exterior of the house.
    • Water resistant. All types of facade plasters reliably protect the building from moisture. Thermal insulation materials do not get wet, due to which they are less destroyed and do not lose their properties for years.
    • Frost resistant. If no gross technological errors were made during the plastering of the building, the material does not burst in frost, it tolerates temperature changes well.
    • Easy to apply. Plastering does not require expensive special equipment, just ordinary tools that are in every home. Having the right skills, the owner of the house can handle it on his own.

    Next, consider the subspecies of plaster and see how they differ from each other.

    Mineral plaster: cheap and beautiful

    This is the most common finishing material. Its undeniable advantages are an extensive color palette and low price. Mineral-based plasters are biologically stable, do not contribute to the reproduction of microorganisms. The finish is not afraid of moisture, direct sunlight.

    The scope of mineral plaster is practically unlimited. It does not burn, it is used for finishing buildings with flammable insulation. The disadvantages include low elasticity. When a building shrinks, the finish surface cracks.

    Mineral decorative plaster has practically no restrictions on compatibility with building and heat-insulating materials. It is applied to concrete, drywall, board materials, plywood. Mineral plaster suitable for plinths

    Acrylic finishes

    Unlike mineral plaster, acrylic plaster is much more elastic. It does not crack when shrinking at home. This is an elastic and durable material that retains its original appearance for several years.

    Acrylic plaster is resistant to frost and moisture, but surfaces finished with this material get dirty relatively quickly. Acrylic-based plaster is more expensive for buyers than mineral plaster. The material is combustible, it is not recommended to use it for facades insulated with mineral wool.

    Walls must be prepared before starting work with acrylic plaster. Surfaces must be smooth, without visible flaws and cracks. Then the finished coating will adhere well to the wall and remain durable for many years

    Features of silicate plaster

    Silicate plaster is one of the most durable materials. The finish is able to last two to three decades without losing its appearance and performance properties for a long time. She practically does not get dirty. If dust and dirt still stick to the surface, they are easily washed off during rain. This plaster does not burst when the house shrinks, does not let moisture through.

    According to the technology, silicate plaster must be quickly applied to surfaces, which requires high professionalism from the worker and usually involves additional costs for the construction team. Another expense item is the purchase of a special primer. The color scheme is not varied.

    In the manufacture of silicate plaster, potash glass is used, which provides the material with high performance. This type of plaster is not used for interior decoration due to the presence of substances that affect human health. But for facades, it fits perfectly

    Silicone plaster: keeping up with the times

    Silicone (siloxane) plaster is an ideal material for facade finishing. It has no other disadvantages, except for the high price. If the budget allows, it makes sense to dwell on this type of finish. Silicone plaster is highly wear-resistant, can last for several decades and is suitable for facades with any heat-insulating materials.

    The material is durable, does not get dirty, self-cleaning under the influence of precipitation, wind. If the house is located next to a highway or in a densely populated area, it is better to finish the facade with silicone plaster, because. it will remain clean under any circumstances. An additional “bonus” for the building owner is the ease of applying the material to the surface. More about this in the video:

    Clinker bricks are similar to ordinary building bricks. There are more than a hundred types of finishing bricks with different textures and rich colors. Clinker brick is a natural material made from clay with the addition of natural dyes. Due to natural raw materials and manufacturing features, the shade of the brick may vary, therefore, if you have to buy material from different batches, it is advisable to mix it in order to avoid a clear mismatch in colors.

    There are three main types of material:

    • facade brick;
    • sidewalk;
    • facing tiles.

    The front surface can be chosen to suit every taste: glossy, matt, grooved or glazed. Clinker brick is durable, does not absorb water (moisture absorption rate 3%). Facade finish is easy to clean when dirty. You can use any household chemicals, because. The material is resistant to chemically aggressive environments. Clinker bricks and tiles tolerate high and low temperatures well and are durable. The only drawback is the high cost and complex installation (qualified builders will be required).

    You can learn about the features of the production of the material from the video:

    Porcelain stoneware is one of the best decorative materials for finishing the facades of private houses. Drawings cannot be applied to the surface, but this does not affect the aesthetics at all. The range is huge, there are hundreds of shades and many textures. Iridescent porcelain stoneware looks especially impressive. There is a material that imitates natural wood or stone. If desired, the owner can create an exclusive house finished with porcelain stoneware.

    Material physical properties:

    • Strong and durable. Like other clay building materials, porcelain stoneware is extremely durable, because resistant to abrasion and mechanical damage.
    • Moisture resistant. Porcelain stoneware does not absorb water, which makes it more resistant to frost. No cracks form on its surface.
    • Temperature resistance. Porcelain stoneware perfectly tolerates any temperature, does not react to changes. The material does not burn and does not change the technical and operational characteristics even with strong heating.
    • Permanent color. The material does not change color. Given the increased wear resistance, the facade finish will be almost eternal.
    • Specific installation. This property should be attributed to the disadvantages, which are the reverse side of the dignity – low hygroscopicity. Porcelain stoneware is mounted on a metal frame or on a special glue. If laid on a cement mortar, it can fall off in the cold.

    Manufacturers produce porcelain tiles with different surfaces:

    • Matt. The material is not further processed, so the surface has a natural look and the finish itself has the best performance properties.
    • Polished. It is also called satin. A special feature is the surface with a noble waxy sheen. The effect is achieved by adding mineral salts. The material is more expensive than matte, and the properties are practically the same.
    • Glazed. The beautiful glazed surface resembles ceramic tiles, but porcelain stoneware is much stronger.
    • Polished. The surface is polished with special abrasives. The material has a rich sparkling color, suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
    • Semi-polished. The front side of this material looks original thanks to the effective combination of shiny and matte areas.
    • Structured. This type of finishing of the facade of a private house is rich in textures. The material can be patterned, embossed, rough, imitating the texture of wood or stone.
    • Mosaic. Luxurious mosaic panels can completely transform buildings. Porcelain mosaic tiles are difficult to install, but the result is worth the effort. The owner of the house can purchase both a mass-produced mosaic and order an exclusive version.

    Porcelain stoneware is suitable for cladding new and refurbishing old buildings. Refurbished old house will look great for decades to come

    For facade cladding, porcelain stoneware is chosen with a tile thickness of 12 mm or more, ideally 14-16 mm. Optimum standard sizes, convenient in work: 300×600, 600×600 and 600×900 mm

    Siding is a decorative panel. This is one of the most beautiful types of cladding. The material is easy to install, well protects the load-bearing structures from external negative influences. There are such types of siding:

    • Vinyl. These are PVC panels, the appearance of which can imitate natural wood, stone or brick. There are many types of vinyl siding, so the choice of decor is almost unlimited. PVC panels are light, resistant to temperatures, mechanical stress and cheap. The only caveat: during installation, the coefficient of linear expansion is taken into account so that the finish does not lose its appearance during temperature changes.
    • Wooden. Finishing panels are made from dried and/or preservative treated wood. The material holds heat well, looks beautiful, is environmentally friendly, however, compared to other types of road siding, it is short-lived and requires special care.
    • Metal. It is made of steel or aluminium. With the obvious advantages of metals (strength, resistance to temperature extremes, hygiene, etc.), there are also obvious disadvantages. If the top layer of metal panels is damaged, corrosion processes begin.
    • Cement. This siding is heavy, which increases the weight of the entire structure. There is a need to strengthen the foundation. But it perfectly replaces the finishing stone, it is just as reliable and not affected by external factors.
    • Ground. Brick or PVC panels are used as basement siding. This is a thick finishing material designed for high operational loads.

    When choosing siding, pay attention to color uniformity, panel thickness, nail hole sizes (should be the same). Ask about the manufacturer’s warranty

    The word “sandwich” in the name of the panels very correctly describes the construction of the material. It consists of two dense layers, between which there is a heater. It is successfully used in the decoration of new houses and the reconstruction of old ones. The material is very beautiful, diverse, light, moisture resistant, fireproof, durable.

    If one of the panels is damaged, it can be replaced without dismantling the entire façade cladding. Sandwich panels cannot be called the cheapest finishing option, but with the right combination of materials, you can reduce the overall cost of building a house.

    Detailed information about the types, advantages, disadvantages of sandwich panels is presented on the video:

    By choosing stone for the façade cladding, the owner of the house knowingly agrees to high costs. However, this is a profitable investment, because for several decades it will be possible not to remember about the repair or replacement of finishes. It will remain strong, reliable, beautiful and resistant to any influences.

    Artificial stone is cheaper and gives more room for design imagination than natural, and their properties differ little. This is the perfect material. The facade can be paneled with any stone: granite, marble, basalt, quartzite, limestone, sandstone, slate or shell rock.

    More information about the rules for laying natural and artificial stone can be found in the material: https://diz-cafe.com/dekor/ukladka-prirodnogo-i-iskusstvennogo-kamnya.html

    Facing with natural stone is an expensive pleasure. The stone can be combined with other, more “democratic” materials and at the same time get a luxurious appearance of the house

    Metal cassettes are widely used for mounting ventilated facades. Cassettes are mounted on special rivets or self-tapping screws in a hidden or open way. The choice of colors, textures and sizes is huge, which greatly expands the design possibilities when decorating a home.

    The material is reliable, durable, resistant to all destructive factors, eco- and fireproof. It has practically no drawbacks, except for the high cost. This is an excellent option for the restoration of the facades of old buildings and the decoration of new buildings.

    You may be interested in the material on the construction of a canopy attached to the house: https://diz-cafe.com/diy/stroitelstvo-navesa-k-domu.html

    A special substructure is required for fixing the ventilated façade. Sometimes a system is used in which the cassettes are fixed on special “sleds”

    Watch the architect’s advice video:

    In most cases, homeowners choose the cheapest finishing materials, because budgets are not limitless. But the saying about the miser who pays twice should not be forgotten. When choosing your future facade, pay attention to whether the material is combined with insulation and load-bearing wall material. Consider durability, degree of thermal insulation, corrosion resistance.

    If you wish, you can always find an acceptable option for a beautiful, practical and economical lining. If in doubt, it is better to consult a specialist.
