Sofa shopping for small spaces can have you feeling like Goldilocks: You need something you can squeeze into a room, but you don’t want to sacrifice comfort (and leg room!) in the process.

Luckily, there are many options out there for apartment dwellers and small home buyers, even reversible sectionals and modular pieces that can shift according to your evolving needs (such as when you’re hosting overnight guests). For this roundup of the best small sofas, we considered flexibility and utility in addition to comfort, durability, and style. That’s right—small sofas can still make a big statement.

If your small sofa takes up a lot of real estate, interior designer Tori Jones of Tori Jones Studio recommends making it extra special. “Go for a beautiful, richly colored upholstery fabric, layer it with a patterned throw, and load it up with a mix of pillows,” she says.

Even if you’re not working within a confined space, there are other reasons you might consider integrating a small sofa into your interior design. For example, when feasible, Jones likes to arrange multiple seating areas within a single room. “If you have the space, a small sofa or an antique settee can anchor a wall or corner of a room and provide a more intimate area for gathering,” she says. “Something like this adds interest to the formulaic ‘large sofa plus two armchairs floating in the middle of a room’ scenario.”

Whatever your reason for selecting a small sofa, we’re here to make things a little easier. Read on for our top options.

Burrow Nomad Sofa Review

Size: 85 x 35 x 33 inches | Materials: Birch, steel, foam, olefin fiber weave upholstery | Weight Capacity: Not listed

What We Like

  • Latch assembly (no hardware necessary)

  • Integrated charging system

  • Many color, fabric, arm, and leg options

  • Reversible cushions

What We Don’t Like

  • Expensive

If you prioritize flexibility, choice, and convenience, the Burrow Nomad Sofa is for you. Like all modular sofas, this piece can be rearranged at your discretion or whim—and, even better, it can be done easily. The Nomad sofa comes equipped with an easy latch assembly, so no tools, no problem. With the latching mechanism, you can easily transform a three-seat couch into a loveseat and back. You can also purchase additional add-ons like a chaise or an ottoman, which allow you to create a sectional-style setup.

Burrow offers many colors and fabrics to choose from, as well as different style options for arms and legs. We also appreciate the scratch- and stain-resistant fabric as well as the reversible cushions; though this model is pricier than others, you’re sure to get extended life out of it.

The feature our reviewer most loved about the Nomad, however, is the built-in phone charger, which ensures your phone is always good to go, even on your laziest days.

What Testers Say

“As a military family member, I am always considering how versatile a piece of furniture will be in another home. I never know if we will have a large family room or just a small space, so I tend to avoid bulky or oddly shaped furniture. I assembled the Nomad using all three seats, but I could easily shorten it to a loveseat configuration if needed.”—Katie Begley, Product Tester

Size: 74 x 31.5 x 34 inches | Materials: Solid/manufactured wood, plastic, velvet upholstery | Weight Capacity: 600 pounds

What We Like

  • Affordable

  • Comfortable

  • Easy assembly

What We Don’t Like

If you want to cover all the bases without breaking the bank, the Ellaria sofa from Corrigan Studio is a great bet. It’s comfortable and affordable, and it doesn’t scrimp on style. Unlike other budget options that provide the same amount of comfort as a covered bench, this sofa comprises thick foam cushions and soft velvet upholstery. At 74 inches wide, it’s a good fit for most small spaces but still conducive to serious lounging, napping, and TV binging. There are two color choices available: a neutral gray that will suit most environments and an emerald green if you’re looking for a statement piece that pops.

Mercury Row Morpheus Reversible Sectional Ottoman Review

Size: 36 x 82.5 x 59.5 inches | Materials: Solid wood, microfiber/microsuede upholstery | Weight Capacity: 600 pounds

What We Like

What We Don’t Like

  • Unsecured ottoman

If you’re short on space but longing to kick your feet up, consider a small sectional. We especially like the Morpheus Reversible Sectional from Mercury Row. The floating ottoman allows you to complete the L-shape sofa at either end, giving you more flexibility with design and greater guest accommodation. It has a nice, simple shape and sophisticated linen-like upholstery—not to mention 11 color options—so it coheres with most décor styles. But most importantly, it’s absurdly comfortable. The plush yet firm cushions lend just the right amount of support, and the wide, flat armrests can function as a makeshift side-table for, say, a laptop or a snack bowl.

 The Spruce / Sarah Vanbuskirk

What Testers Say

“I was a little worried about ordering this Mercury Row sectional in a yellow hue as I was concerned about possible stains showing up more on such a bright, light, fun color. However, I’ve found, despite lots of sticky, snack-wielding kids crawling all over it and a puppy who has taken up residence on the sofa’s ottoman end, this sectional still looks brand new.”—Sarah Vanbuskirk, Product Tester

Crate & Barrel

Size: 76 x 43 x 26 inches | Materials: Aniline-dyed Italian leather, engineered hardwood | Weight Capacity: Not listed

What We Like

What We Don’t Like

  • Expensive

Compact and luxurious, the Gather Deep Leather Apartment Sofa from Crate & Barrel is the perfect choice for those looking to splurge but are short on space. Made of high-quality, aniline-dyed Italian Lynx leather, this stylish sofa is comfortable, soft, and cozy—even though it’s a shorter width, the 43-inch extra deep seating provides plenty of room to curl up to read or watch movies. Although it has a modern look, you can add your own pillows or throw blanket, and it will fit into almost any decor. There are longer lengths available if you have the space, as well as three leather color choices—Toffee, Gun Metal, and Smoke—and a matching ottoman.

Size: 72 x 38 x 34 inches | Materials: Solid wood, foam, polyester-blend upholstery | Weight Capacity: Not listed

What We Like

  • Striking style

  • Sturdy, corner-blocked frame

  • Heavy-duty upholstery

  • Loose bolsters and cushions for easy cleaning

What We Don’t Like

  • Expensive

Just because you’re hunting for a small sofa doesn’t mean you can’t choose one that makes a big statement. Nothing screams “luxury” quite like a velvet sofa, especially a velvet sofa in a shade of vibrant green, deep blue, or yarrow gold. The Sven velvet sofa is 72 inches wide, so it’s at the longer end of small sofas—perfect if your primary concern isn’t squeezing into a small space.

This sofa is a splurge. However, its durability also makes it a great investment. With a sturdy, corner-blocked wooden frame made of kiln-dried solid wood and heavy-duty upholstery, it’ll offer comfort for years to come. Plus, the velvet is rated 40,000 rubs, meaning it could even withstand the heavy use of a commercial environment, so bring on the children and pets.

The Klaipeda sofa from Carson Carrington evokes the seductive interiors of the 1960s, yet its clean lines offer timeless appeal. What’s more, the tufted back and tapered wooden legs create a high-end feel. The Klaipeda is 65 inches wide—considerably cozy but not too small for two. Durable and easy to clean, this couch packs style and substance. It comes in five color options, so you’re sure to find one that suits your space.

The Buchanan Slipcovered Sofa is a great addition to a small living room that gets a lot of use. Durably constructed, it has a corner-blocked frame and sinuous springs, so it can handle endless hours of lounging and energetic game watching. And since it comes in a wide variety of upholstery and color options, it can be customized to fit into any room or decor. The solid rubberwood legs are removable when needed and have adjustable levers to provide stability on uneven floors.

The Best Slipcovered Sofas to Customize Any Space

Size: 79 x 32.25 x 31 inches | Materials: Solid wood, faux leather upholstery | Weight Capacity: 750 pounds

What We Like

  • Retro aesthetic

  • Nice wear

  • Easy assembly

What We Don’t Like

Original chesterfield sofas came upholstered in dark leather, fit for gentlemen to sit without wrinkling their suits; thankfully, designers no longer exclusively cater to the needs of such stately clients. Contemporary iterations of this classic sofa now come in many bold and bright colors like the Jenkin chesterfield, upholstered in bright honey leather. However, if your goal is to evoke the original aesthetic, the couch also comes upholstered in a darker vintage gray.

We love how the tuxedo arms have been updated for a more contemporary aesthetic. Though they maintain the classic button tufting and high arms (which are level with the back of the couch), they’ve been squared off to achieve crisper lines than the rounded arms of the original.

Admittedly, this couch might not provide enough comfort to be an everyday go-to (such as for the nap or TV-binging couch). But it is a stellar pick for social occasions and guest seating. At 79 inches wide, you’ll be able to comfortably seat three.

Final Verdict

The Burrow Nomad tops our list of small sofas because it’s comfortable and highly customizable, allowing you to select a sofa that caters to your individual tastes and evolves with your changing needs. If you’re specifically looking for a sectional, the Mercury Row Morpheus Reversible Sectional is worth checking out. It has a sleek, modern design and comes in a variety of colors—all at a great price.

Look

While the width of a standard sofa ranges from 84 to 88 inches, a standard loveseat measures about 52 inches wide. In between these poles are small sofas, ranging from 68 to 80 inches wide. Either of these options can work well in a small space, according to Jones. “If the room is tiny and the sofa takes up most of the real estate, go for comfort,” she says. “Don’t do anything spindly or leggy. A classic Bridgewater sofa—inviting, fully upholstered—is what I’d suggest.”

Alternatively, she recommends choosing a shallow sectional or banquette wrapping a corner (or corners) of a room to maximize seating. “With this, you can add an occasional table and a single accent chair and call it a day,” she notes.

Material

You want to choose something that’s comfortable and durable and also consider how much use your piece will get and how much maintenance you’re willing to put into your investment. If kids and pets aren’t clambering onto your couch, you might be able to get away with a linen option. With pets or children, you’re going to want a more stain-resistant option like microfiber. Its tight weave makes liquids bead up on the surface, giving you more time to tackle a spill before it sinks in.

Velvet is also, perhaps surprisingly, easier to clean than many alternatives. When choosing a velvet couch, just be sure to select one with a minimum rub count of 15,000+. (This rating is a testament to the number of abrasions the fabric can withstand before showing signs of wear.) With velvet, you’ll also have to consider ways to reduce exposure to sunlight to avoid premature fading.

Unlike most other upholstery materials, leather and faux leather can get better with age as they develop a nice patina. However, these materials are more susceptible to scratches and puncturing and might not be the best option for those with pets or kids.

Style and Shape

Sofas come in myriad styles and shapes, from the buttoned-up chesterfield (no back cushions) to the laid-back Lawson style with detached back cushions. Your preferences will depend on your taste, but you’ll also want to consider the intended use and anticipated traffic. A small chesterfield may go great in a foyer, bar area, or sitting room that receives occasional guests, but you may not want to rely on it for relaxation.

It’s also good to note that today’s market supplies plenty of small sectionals or modular pieces that can approximate the generous seating of sectionals through add-ons like ottomans or chaises.

FAQ

  • To measure a sofa, determine its width, height, and depth. For moving or delivery purposes, you also might need to determine the diagonal depth, which can tell you whether the sofa can pass through an entryway when positioned on its end. The width can be determined by measuring the widest part of the sofa, typically from arm to arm.

To determine the height, measure the back at the highest point; if you’re trying to determine whether the sofa will pass through an entryway, you can discount the height added by legs as long as they screw on.

Measure the depth from the outside edge of the seat to the back of the couch. Diagonal depth can be calculated by placing a straight edge from the top of the back of the frame to the front of the arm; you’ll then measure from the bottom back corner up to the point where it intersects the line created by the original straight edge.

  • Before grabbing that detergent or stain remover, consult the manufacturer’s instructions. (Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean you have to keep up with the booklet that came with its delivery—you can usually find the information you need on the tag.) It’ll tell you whether you should use a water-based detergent, a milder non-detergent soap, or a dry, solvent-based cleaner. In the case of leather couches, you might need to use rubbing alcohol or a leather cleaning solution.

Directions differ depending on the material and the sort of stain involved, so it’s best to start with the manufacturer’s instructions rather than generalized approaches.

  • A loveseat can accommodate up to two people, while a sofa typically supports between two and four. Given the slight overlap of a loveseat and a two-seater sofa, the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, though a standard loveseat measures about 52 inches wide while the standard small sofa is somewhere between 68 and 80 inches wide.

While loveseats are often paired with a larger sofa to maximize seating capacity in a space, they can be used as a primary sofa in small spaces.

For this roundup, Jessica Joblin consulted reports from our product testers as well as outside customer reviews. She considered criteria such as size, comfort, style, ease of assembly, and durability (of the structural materials as well as the upholstery itself). With the exception of the sleeper sofa, all of the featured sofas are 79 inches wide or smaller.

Jessica also spoke with interior designer Tori Jones for additional decorating and styling insight. Having worn multiple hats—from editor to art director and decorator to creative lead—over the course of her decade-long career, Jones knows the ins and outs of designing small spaces.

The color selection is a bit conservative, but that does allow you to match it with many surroundings. The couch seats four people easily, and is holding up well to my spoiled dogs.

How Much Do Small Couches Cost?

Buying a sofa for a small space doesn’t always mean spending less money. A high-quality couch is often a big purchase.

As BenchMade Modern founder Edgar Blazona says, often the difference between a $,1000 sofa and a $4,000 sofa is often the quality of materials.

“You get what you pay for. Better materials last longer. And that’s really the difference between a $1,000 sofa and a $4,000 sofa.”

Edgar Blazona

CEO, Benchmade Modern

In this article, we’ve selected some of the best couches available for small spaces, with many of our selections recommended by interior designers and industry experts.

We’ve also tried to include a range of affordable sofas and slightly more expensive options — we feature couches that cost $640 all the way up to $2,000, though we’ve tried to keep most in the $1,000 range.

The Ideal Couch Sizes for Small Living Spaces

Just because you have a smaller living space doesn’t mean you have to buy a super small sofa.

Sofas are the centerpiece of most living spaces so you want to find a sofa that is comfortable and looks great alongside fitting into your space and matching with any other pieces you have like a coffee table or media unit.

So what’s the average sofa length (or width)?

Wayfair explains: “Though sofas can be anywhere between 70″ and 96″ long, standard three-seat sofas tend to be between 70″ and 87″ long, and the most common length is 84″.”

And when it comes to loveseats — a smaller sofa style designed for couples and smaller spaces — Wayfair says:

“Loveseats tend to be 48″ – 72″ long. There is no standard loveseat length, but it is common to find loveseats that are toward the middle of the spectrum at 52″ – 66″ long.”

The sofas we featured in this article range from 55.1″ — 90.5″.

How to Measure Your Space

When you’re trying to figure out the perfect sized couch for your home, try arranging your existing furniture as you’d like it and then measure the space left over for your sofa. You’ll want to allow a minimum of 30 inches in front of the sofa for walking around and also ensure that the sofa arms won’t encroach on doorways.

CB2 also recommends that you sketch out your sofa on a scale drawing or tape out the space the sofa will take on your floor:

“To help you decide if the piece fits the scale of the room, you might want to sketch it into a 1/4″ graph paper drawing of the room along with other pieces that will be in the room. Or, tape newspaper together to create a true-to-size “footprint” of the piece, position it on the room floor.”

How to Choose the Right Small Sofa for Your Space

“Selecting the right sofa can be tricky,” says Luciana Fragali. “I recommend that you make a list of what is important to you: how will you use the sofa? Do you have kids or pets? How many people will sit on your sofa? Does your floor scratch easily? Once you have answered these questions, you can then look at quality features.

“I recommend that you make a list of what is important to you: how will you use the sofa? Do you have kids or pets? How many people will sit on your sofa? Does your floor scratch easily?”

And when it comes to quality features, there are two areas Fragali says you should focus on.

“First is the frame: we recommend a frame of furniture-grade plywood, engineered hardwood, or solid wood. When you are testing out a sofa, the frame should feel solid. Any swaying is a sign that the frame isn’t strong.”

“Second,” Fragali adds. “Check the suspension when testing out a sofa, and listen for squeaks or creaks. That’s a sign that the springs are improperly installed or possibly broken.”

If you’re buying a sofa online and can’t make these checks in person, look through all of the reviews you can find to see what people are saying about the frames and suspension of the sofas on your list.

Bonus: How to Get the Most From a Small Space

“For small rooms, I highly recommend extra lighting,” says Fragali. “Whether it is natural light from a window, or if you do not have that option, I would consider track lighting, floor lamps, table lamps, sconces, pendant lighting, or wall lighting. The right lighting can open any room and provide additional warmth.

8 Couches for Small Spaces

There’s no place like home—even if home is a teeny tiny apartment that would take you 15 seconds max to show off on MTV Cribs (not including your fridge, ofc). Despite your serious lack of ample square footage, you still want a space that reflects your personal style while providing a spot to relax—which, btw, should never include lounging on a bean bag or metal folding chair you found in your parents’ garage (we know you deserve better, babe).

You might think it is out of the realm of possibilities if you’re working with a studio, but adding a small couch to your space is totally doable, explains interior stylist and lifestyle blogger Jessica Brigham. It turns out that it’s all about how the space ~flows~ to make it functional. “Centralize and float proportionally-sized furnishings where you can easily navigate cased openings and doorways (even if it’s a tightish squeeze),” she adds. So, yes, you can make room for all your fave things *and* fit in a new couch. It is really the best of both worlds.

To help ya get started on your not-so-extreme home makeover, we’ve rounded up the very best couches for small spaces, sure to fit any aesthetic, budget, and most importantly, floor plan. Plus, we chatted with Brigham to give you expert advice on how to make your new piece of furniture work in even the ittiest-bittiest of living rooms or apartments (spoiler: You are actually going to need a tape measure, so go dig one out from the depths of your junk drawer).

How to choose the best couch for a small space

In addition to smaller sectionals, Brigham mentions modern, low-profile, and corner pieces as great options for maximizing a small space. Her personal fave? “There’s nothing I love more than a channel-back sofa, baby! Bold velvet or camel leather, in particular. Pick a fabric that’ll stand the test of time in your home,” she says. (We are currently drooling over this small-space-friendly one from West Elm.)

Still not enough room for a full-on couch? Brigham recommends a smaller settee with an accent chair and LOTS of ultra-plush and uniquely-patterned throw pillows for added character.

How to measure your space

Let’s bring your couch dreams to life, but first let’s make sure it will fit. Brigham recommends measuring the envisioned sofa area, being sure to optimize the most width and depth available—no wasted space here! She adds, “If your sofa is placed under a window, make sure the back does not exceed the sill height.” Def the type of thing I wouldn’t think to do!

Don’t forget openings either! I have had the unfortunate experience of buying a couch only to find out it would not fit through the front door of my apartment. Save yourself the frustration-induced tears by measuring all the openings your piece will have to fit through. “Hey, no harm in measuring these openings twice and ordering just once,” says Brigham. Take her word (and my life lesson) and break out the damn measuring tape!

Need a New Sofa for Your Small Apartment? Here’s What You Should Consider

By

Kim Renta

Even if you’re living in a tiny apartment, you can still find a sofa that’s stylish, comfortable, and, most importantly, fits even the smallest of spaces. Gone are the days when apartment dwellers needed to sacrifice style, quality, and seating capacity due to limited space. Furniture manufacturers and retailers have responded with a variety of small, comfy sofas that make the most of your square footage.

Contents

  • Regular sofa vs. apartment-size sofa
  • Couches for small spaces: It’s all about proportions
  • Sectionals
  • Sleeper sofas
  • Futons
  • The versatility of apartment-size sofas

Choosing couches for small apartments, and decorating limited spaces in general, can be challenging, but with a little imagination and some unique space-saving solutions, you can create a cozy and inviting home you’ll love living in.

Regular sofa vs. apartment-size sofa

Although some apartment dwellers may opt for loveseats, a loveseat generally has just two seat cushions, while apartment-size sofas have three. A standard-size three-seat sofa usually measures about 35 inches deep by 84 inches wide. While apartment-size sofa dimensions can vary, most measure between 68 and 80 inches wide, with a few-inch reduction in depth.

Couches for small spaces: It’s all about proportions

When thinking about decorating any space, it’s important to consider the scale of the room. While you might love the look of that overstuffed full-size sofa, it very well may overwhelm your less-than-roomy living space. On the flip side, if you eventually move to a bigger space, your apartment-size couch may look just as lost and out of place. The trick is to find a small, comfy couch that still works within the space you have. By paying careful attention to the scale of the room and the furniture and accents within it, you will achieve the best possible decorating result.

Many apartment-size sofas offer more scaled-back proportions in all aspects of design:

  • Comfortable cushions rather than overstuffed cushions.
  • Simple wood or metal frames rather than ornate or bulky frames.
  • Clean-line sleek legs that show flooring beneath versus upholstered-to-the-floor designs or heavy wood feet.

Sectionals

We love the look and design possibilities of sectionals, particularly in smaller spaces. Even a sectional with just three pieces can offer ample seating without overcrowding the room. With the versatile L-shape of a sectional, not only can you offer comfortable seating for your family and guests, but it can actually help to define the room’s layout, which can be particularly helpful when trying to decorate a one-room studio apartment. Plus, the natural L-shape design offers more space for other furnishings and accessories while still providing the maximum number of seats your living space can accommodate.

For even more customizable versatility, consider a reversible sectional. The three-piece modular design includes two standard seating cushions and a lounge section that can be arranged on either the right or left side of the sofa, depending on your room’s layout requirements. The built-in lounge cushion invites reading, TV viewing, and — most likely — a whole lot of napping.

Sleeper sofas

When living in smaller spaces, and even more so in a studio apartment, having furniture that offers double function is key. The standard sleeper sofa has a bed that folds out from beneath the cushions. While standard sleeper sofas can easily fold out to a queen size bed, usually apartment-size sleeper sofas turn into full-size beds.

Many of the new sleeper sectionals have cushions that come apart and can be rearranged to create cozy, and surprisingly comfortable, sleeping nooks. If your smaller home or apartment doesn’t have a spare room for guests, these fold-out sectionals are an ideal solution for visitors. If you want to take some time weighing over your options, check out the best types of sleeper sofas for living rooms.

Futons

What are also known as convertible couches, futons convert almost effortlessly from couch to bed. They’re great for overnight guests or for studio apartments where the living room and bedroom are combined. They also work well as extra seating in an office or den that can quickly convert to a bed, turning an office to a guest room in minutes!

The versatility of apartment-size sofas

While we’ve focused on the practicality of apartment couches for smaller-size living rooms, there are other uses for these pint-size furnishings. While you may have room for a standard sofa in your living or family room, you may wish to add an apartment couch to your master bedroom for a nice reading or TV-watching nook. Or, you might want to feature a small sofa in a child’s room, nursery, playroom, or home office.

Couches for small spaces don’t have to be thought of as simply transitional furnishings. Choose carefully, and your apartment-size sofa can provide years of stylish seating even after you’ve upsized your living space.

25 interior items that are ideal for a small apartment

If you think that all the necessary furniture will not fit in a small apartment, we are ready to dispel your delusion.

Owners of a small living space are probably familiar with the problem: they like a table or a sofa, but it does not fit into a small apartment. What to do? ReRooms showcases 25 beautiful and functional home furnishings that won’t take up much space and are perfect for the smallest rooms. Just look at these wonderful interior items, as if they were created for a small space!

Sofa bed

Such furniture is versatile and practical. Sofa beds are essential in a small studio so as not to take up a limited space with a lot of furniture. They will be a great solution for a small living room, providing an extra bed when needed.

Choose sofas that are as narrow as possible, without corner structures and backs that are too wide. For example, a straight, narrow sofa without armrests, which can be transformed into a bed by simply lowering the backrest, will be very convenient – simply, quickly and functionally. Even two people can easily fit on such a bed, and it will take up very little space.

Photo: imodern.ru

If you need a bed for one, you can use a sofa bed, as in the photo below. When folded, it looks fashionable and modern thanks to its design with just one armrest. And when unfolded, it takes up only a third more space. Ideal for a studio with one tenant.

Photo: zvet.ru

Armchairs and poufs

You don’t need to put a large chair in a small apartment – it will take up too much space. Pick up an easy chair of medium size, with very thin legs and thin armrests, so that only the back and seat remain massive. Thanks to this, the piece of furniture will not look bulky, and it will take up less space in the room.

Photo: dg-home.ru

You can stop at a more classic version, with the usual soft armrests. The chair should be compact, the body is narrow, and the legs are as thin as possible. Everything is as in the photo below.

Photo: hoff.ru

If we are not talking about the living room, but about the bedroom, a pouffe or a banquette will look better there. Without unnecessary decorations, compact and practical, with an internal storage compartment under the seat.

Photo: zvet.ru

Chairs

The most practical solution for a small apartment is a set of folding chairs that can be taken out as needed without taking up space at other times. The wooden two-tone chair shown in the photo below is perfect for a modern interior of a small kitchen or living room.

Photo: field-rage.ru

Another more interesting solution: to use modern transparent plastic chairs instead of massive stools. Their main advantage is the ability to merge with the environment and visually unload the space, which is important in a small room. In addition, such chairs will perfectly let in sunlight, making the room more spacious.

Photo: field-rage.ru

If there is a need to somehow highlight the chairs, but at the same time maintain their light and unobtrusive transparent appearance, you can choose a hybrid version. For example, choose a chair with a transparent back and seat, but with the usual wooden legs, as in the photo.

Photo: field-rage.ru

Tables

If the room is very small, but at least some workspace is required, the ideal option is a hanging opening table. It can be placed at any convenient height, and all the necessary accessories can be stored inside. As a result, the table will be, and the floor will remain free.

Photo: laredoute.ru

For a small kitchen, a classic book table is suitable – provided that there is enough space to fully open it.

Photo: divan.ru

A more ergonomic option is a round sliding table that can transform into a more oblong, oval shape.

Photo: field-rage.ru

Coffee tables

A great alternative to full size tables, perfect for a small apartment. Choose an option with an additional folding sash and on wheels – in a small space it is often necessary to move furniture, so it must be mobile.

Photo: mebelion.ru

Another practical solution would be a table with an inner compartment in addition to the outer shelves. This will add a closed functional storage space, important for a small living space.

The most compact will be a round coffee table, as it has no corners that take up space and interfere with the passage. The glass transparent surface will make the appearance of the table elegant and very light. A great option for a small living room that can not be visually overloaded.

Lamps

Light in a small apartment is very important: it sets accents, is responsible for zoning in common areas and studios, visually expands small rooms. But the lamp also needs to be chosen wisely. It is best to stay on a flat-shaped lamp so that it does not eat up space.

Photo: field-rage.ru

You can choose a larger lamp, but it is better to make a decorative element out of it. For example, choose a beautiful chandelier in the form of a flower – as in the photo below. We get a functional and very useful decoration, and not a useless decor that takes up space.

Photo: field-rage.ru

A very practical solution for a small room is an original narrow floor lamp with small shelves. At the same time we get both a light source and storage space.

Mirrors

Like abundant lighting, a mirror has a beneficial effect on the visual expansion of the room. First, it reflects light, increasing its concentration. Secondly, it reflects and thereby enlarges the room. For a small apartment, it is better to choose a mirror in a half frame or without it at all.

Photo: field-rage.ru

For a small room, it would be logical to turn a mirror into decor. Such a functional solution will allow you to avoid a large number of useless things for decorating the interior.

Photo: laredoute.ru

When it comes to a small bathroom, choose a practical mirror with built-in shelves and compartments. Thanks to them, there is no need to place a separate shelf or cabinet.

Racks and cabinets

For a small apartment it is better to choose narrow and high racks with shelves. They do not take up extra space and visually raise the ceiling of the room.

Photo: komodmsk.ru

You can also make a functional decoration out of shelving, choosing an original shape, for example, with an oval wall and herringbone shelves. For a small room, this solution will be better than the usual decor. However, the rack should still remain narrow and rather high.

Photo: komodmsk.ru

A closed storage cabinet is also needed, tall and narrow. And if the door is mirrored, it will also play a role in expanding the space. For a small apartment, this is the best option.

Dressers

Instead of a full-sized wardrobe in a small living room or bedroom, it is better to put a compact chest of drawers. Let the boxes not be located side by side, but one above the other: so that the chest of drawers is taller and narrower.

Photo: field-rage.ru

And for additional storage, take a closer look at the mini chests of drawers – very small in size and with several drawers for small items. For the greatest compactness, it is better to choose a mini chest of drawers without handles, with holes.

How to choose and arrange furniture in a one-room apartment?

A small apartment is always associated with tightness and lack of free space, which is not always true. A small apartment is, first of all, compactness and functionality, convenience and proper use of square meters. Today, in new buildings of economy class, especially in big cities with high real estate prices, small apartments are especially popular among citizens. These are studios or “odnushki” with an area of up to 35 square meters. meters. It is about how to properly equip such housing, we will talk in this article.

Recommendations for furniture arrangement

The number of tenants, their preferences, tastes and needs are of primary importance in the arrangement of a one-room apartment. When two or three adults, children or even pets live in such an apartment, it is not easy to properly organize life in such an apartment.

When arranging furniture, pay attention to the following points:

  • Use space wisely: combine living and dining areas, separate rooms with interior elements, redevelop if necessary;
  • Buy functional furniture that can transform or fit into walls;
  • Visually increase the space with mirrors, photo wallpapers or properly organized lighting;
  • Divide the space into zones, in each of which highlight the center and arrange furniture around it;
  • Allow privacy for each member of the family.

If a child lives in the apartment, be sure to organize a separate space for him. He should have not only a bed and a closet, but also a place to study and play. In an apartment without children, using partitions, you can separate the bed and sleeping place from the dining area of \u200b\u200bthe resting place. This arrangement of furniture is usually used in studio apartments.

How to choose the right furniture for a studio apartment?

In order to correctly arrange all the interior items in the real estate, they must first be selected correctly. It is impossible to take a sofa in the store, bring it home and try it on to a specific place. To do this, you can use special computer programs for modeling the location of furniture and organizing the interior. Such programs are usually available in furniture stores, where they can be used.

Adequately assess the space you have, do not buy bulky furniture. It should be not only compact, convenient, foldable, but also easily transformable. No solid classic sofas made of leather with a carriage tie and solid wood trim will look harmonious in a small apartment. This is furniture for palaces and penthouses.

In a one-room apartment, you should buy a sofa bed, a folding chair, transforming tables, built-in wardrobes, chairs that can be placed under the table to save space. Do not buy large chandeliers and refrigerators. All this visually will significantly limit the free space in the apartment.

There should always be order in a small apartment. The presence of a large number of things scattered around the apartment not only interferes with the residents, but also visually greatly reduces the free space. Things need to be correctly arranged on the shelves on the walls, hidden on the shelves in the closet. In the corridor, you can use pull-out shelves for shoes or organize them in mirror cabinets.

How to equip a bathroom in a one-room apartment?

A bathroom in a one-room apartment also does not differ in large dimensions. However, it usually needs a fairly large number of things necessary for life to fit in it.

In order to make it possible to turn around in the bathroom and hit the furniture, you need to place it in accordance with the recommendations of experts, in particular:

  • Replace the bathtub with a compact shower cabin;
  • Build the toilet directly into the wall with a flush button;
  • Install a small water heater above the toilet;
  • If there is very little space in the bathroom, install a washing machine in the kitchen in the lower cabinet of the kitchen unit;
  • Place a large cabinet under the sink to store hygiene products;
  • Place an additional cabinet above the sink with a mirror to increase the space.

In the bathroom, it is best to arrange lighting with fixtures built into the ceiling or walls. Chandeliers and large wall sconces will deprive you of additional free space. The light colors of the tiles in the bathroom will help to visually increase the area of the room and create a mood of home comfort.

A small one-room apartment is not a cage where you can’t turn around, it’s a space for fantasy. It is enough just to properly organize the arrangement of the apartment, correctly arrange the furniture and choose colors in order to forget about the limited space and enjoy a free life in a cozy and pleasant atmosphere.

12 basic rules – Home – Home

  • Small apartment: 12 basic rules

A small apartment is not very comfortable for living. An example of such an uncomfortable apartment is a one-room “Khrushchev”. But if there is no opportunity to expand the living space, then you can make it as comfortable as possible.

Nov 18, 2014

Author:

Olga Voronova

We will give you the 12 simplest rules with which you can create a cozy and comfortable apartment for living.

Rule 1: Don’t clutter . Do not put massive furniture. One closet will take up half the room, and bedside tables and tables will take up the second half. Here is just the case when a minimum of items is better, but comfortable, multifunctional, those that will be actively used. Do not hang voluminous, heavy, multi-layer curtains with a variety of “tuning” on the windows. Do not burden the apartment with carpets, lots of pillows and huge paintings and panels.

Rule 2. Keep the correct proportions . This means that there cannot be one huge sofa in the room, because. it will take up this whole room. The same goes for the option with a mini sofa and a huge table. There are also “psychological” proportions: for example, you should not put palace furniture, even if small, and hang a chandelier with pendants in a small one-room apartment. In this case, it is tasteless, the palaces are not small.

Rule 3: Create the illusion of zoning . More precisely, a small apartment must be zoned, since functional areas are an element of practicality. A light screen or compartment partition is what you need! But if this is not possible, it is imperative to create the illusion of zoning. This is easy to do – just put the shelving in a different way or “play” with lighting, for example, instead of one chandelier, make several spotlights above the workplace, an original pendant lamp above the sofa and put a floor lamp near the chair.

Rule 4. Use multifunctional furniture.
Functionality comes in three versions. The first is transforming furniture. For example, an armchair-bed or a sofa-bed, a cabinet-table, a table-chest, a panel-locker. The second option is corner furniture. The use of corners frees up huge reserves in the case of a small apartment, besides, corner furniture, as a rule, is almost invisible. The third option is custom-made furniture. As a result, you can order a table, a wardrobe, and a sofa in individual sizes, even if this does not meet any standards.

Rule 5. Use only light colors . This is one of the common truths that probably everyone knows. A small apartment needs only light colors, pastel, blurry, no dark wallpapers and paints, and wallpapers with a complex, catchy, large pattern. Everything should be light and bright. But, this does not mean that bright accents are unacceptable. The above applies, let’s say, to most of the apartment, to its largest surfaces. More specifically, the light background color should be eighty percent of the volume. And the remaining twenty – at your discretion.

For a small room, light wallpaper and furniture are ideal. Only accessories in the form of pillows can become a bright accent. Photo: thinkstockphotos.com
Rule 6. Create the illusion of a high ceiling
. In small apartments and ceilings, as a rule, are low. However, you need to create the illusion that they are higher than they really are. This is not difficult. Firstly, there is no need to clutter up the existing ceiling with decor, painting, stucco, etc. Color is only white. Wallpaper is better to stick to the ceiling. No need to hang long lamps. You can make a small cornice with hidden lighting around the perimeter. In the most extreme case, the device of a glossy stretch ceiling will effectively help.

Rule 7. No – facelessness . Here, just, we will talk about bright color and active accessories. Usually, owners of small apartments choose what is practical and win-win. Yes, light colors, but they are everywhere: everything is light gray, light beige or cream. Accessories are the most discreet. But that is what it means to be faceless. The eye in such an apartment simply has nothing to “catch on”. A few bright spots, catchy, unusual accessories will immediately transform a small apartment.

When decorating a room, choose bright accessories. It can be a floor lamp, carpet or decorative pillows. Photo: thinkstockphotos.com
Rule 8 Use mirrors
. Everyone has mirrors, but only in the hallway and bathroom. But mirrors are almost the most powerful tool in visually enlarging a small apartment. There are many options for using mirrors, ranging from mirrored closet doors to stacked mirror panels. But even if you just hang a mirror on the wall, but at the same time arrange it in a beautiful frame like a picture, it will look like an original panel.

Rule 9 Use hanging furniture and appliances . In a small apartment, you need to make the most of the usable wall area. Consider all options for hanging furniture. And when buying, pay attention to a hanging pedestal, not a floor one, shelves are better than a rack, etc. Well, try to hang all the equipment. There are special brackets for a TV, music center, microwave oven and many other technical “things”. You will win extra meters by saving yourself from the need to buy cabinets and stands for them.

Rule 10. Find a better place for old things . Do not accumulate old things. Firstly, you can adapt a balcony or loggia for storing things by making a spacious closet there. Secondly, a personal “warehouse” can be arranged in a garage or in a country house in the form of a special extension. And, thirdly, for such things you can rent a cell in the City Box.

Rule 11 Keep order . A clean apartment, where things are in their places, always looks more spacious. Try not to put anything under the furniture and do not put boxes and bags on the cabinets. To organize the order, it is best to put things in special containers and sign these containers. Such containers fit perfectly into cabinets, using every centimeter of volume.

Rule 12. Do not abuse small souvenirs . This refers to small-sized objects – vases, figurines, frames and other trifles. When there are a lot of them, an impression of variegation, visual disorder is created, and the room seems cluttered. A small apartment cannot be turned into a souvenir shop. Accessories for a small size should be just large enough, expressive, but there should be few of them.

Small apartment for rent with a mezzanine and a large window — designchat.com

The customers contacted Tatiana and Olga for the first time – they were going to rent out the apartment on Airbnb in the future, the house was full of other apartments for rent, and it was important to be different from them for the better. The girls found this work very interesting: the apartment has an unusual layout, a huge window and a ceiling with unusual architecture. And to transform the space, it took quite a bit of investment and simple design techniques.

This apartment has a history: it is located in the former building of the Pulsar Research and Production Enterprise, the premises used to be non-residential, and recently it was completely renovated into apartments. The apartment was already finished, but the bathroom was designed very unsuccessfully – the toilet bowl looked directly into the shower room. It was completely changed, focusing primarily on convenience.

Tatyana and Olga tried to preserve the rest of the finishing details to the maximum: laminate flooring, walls, the front door and the door to the bathroom. In the main room, the walls were repainted, the stretch ceiling in the hallway area was removed, sockets, switches and lighting points were added. But work on the mezzanine was carried out on a larger scale: the floor was redone there, it, together with one of the walls and the closet, was finished with cork. Folding stairs designers added railings and railings on the second floor.

As a reference, the hostess presented the girls with a picture that should have been present in the interior – the colors for the furniture were taken from her.

It took about 1.5 months to create this apartment – from February to April 2021. True, the hostess volunteered to deal with the implementation herself – with the advice and support of Olga and Tatiana – so the apartment was finally ready only in August. In general, the “ideas of beauty” of the hostess and the designers were very similar, so the work was carried out calmly and comfortably.

“This project already had interesting, atypical architecture. And it was clear that she would “do” the entire interior. It was important for us to emphasize this beauty, not to spoil it, not to overdo it and make the tiny space visually larger and more airy. We painted all the walls and the ceiling white for a reason – it highlights and emphasizes the shape. Bright details softened the feeling of industrial space, thanks to them the interior immediately became cozy and warm. All incoming people called him “candy”, – say the designers of the KubKvadrat studio.

Furniture for this apartment was chosen inexpensively, because the budget was very limited. But a vintage chandelier was hung over the table – it became a reference to the history of the building, it was these that used to be hung in factories.

The interior turned out to be certainly interesting and unusual – and most importantly, it respects the building itself and the space, which has become comfortable, practical and bright. Behind this, a line of people who want to live in it for some time will definitely line up.

Small sofa in the interior – 60 photos of the perfect design

> Furniture > A small sofa for solving big problems – an effective solution for small apartments (75 photos)

Small footage of the room dictates its own rules for fittings. To create the most comfortable and attractive design for a room that does not differ in impressive dimensions, it is necessary to approach the choice of furniture as rationally as possible.

A compact but extremely functional option – small sofas with a sleeping place will come in handy here.

In the living room, kitchen or bedroom, this piece of furniture will fit into the overall layout and create an extra bed without cluttering up the free space.

Table of contents of the article:

Advantages of

Although it is traditionally believed that the sofa should be massive and roomy, this choice is not very obvious for owners of small one-room apartments or studios.

Compact small sofas are quite functional and create a cozy homely atmosphere where the priority is to clear the maximum free space.

Its main advantage can be called its practicality. A small sofa bed is equally effective as a regular comfortable sofa and a single bed – there is no need for additional bulky beds.

A huge variety of models and types will help you choose the best furniture for any style and layout.

But even in an apartment that does not suffer from a lack of living space, all rooms are not equally spacious and it can be difficult to find sleeping places to accommodate all potential guests.

As a fallback, small sofas can solve this problem: become a help for hospitable hosts and play an important role in the interior of a separate small room, kitchen, balcony or loggia.

It is worth noting the ease of transformation of such fittings – indeed, even a child can easily and effortlessly turn a small folding sofa into a bed or vice versa.

For those who believe that there is no need to spend a lot of money on furniture, it is worth mentioning that small sofas are much cheaper than their full-size counterparts and are available to anyone.

Selection guide

The first thing to consider is the dimensions. Since this category of models is in demand for small-sized premises, then it will depend on the dimensions of a particular model whether it is suitable in your particular case.

It is worth deciding in advance on the intended use of this furniture. From a sleeper in a modest room, a practical and comfortable solution for the kitchen, and a dainty little leather sofa in the living room, there are different requirements for upholstery material, style, transformability and price.

Appearance and preservation of a single style. Although it is small, it is capable of serving faithfully for many years and all this time it should not stand out strikingly from the rest of the design of the room.

In a small room, it is difficult to realize a real eclectic mix of styles, so the future purchase should correspond to a single style of decoration. embedded in the room.

Such a pragmatic approach shows others the artistic taste of the owners and creates a whole positive impression of the decoration of the house. And the residents themselves will be much more comfortable living in a beautiful apartment with a well-designed design.

Some successful solutions for small rooms are shown in the following photos of a small sofa in the interior.

Varieties of small sofas

We should also mention the compact sofa bed. This piece of furniture, unique in its versatility, is indispensable in conditions of limited consolidated space.

Its advantage is the easy transformation at any convenient time into a full-fledged single or one and a half bed.

Small corner sofa offers less practical possibilities, but impresses with perfect comfort and a representative look.

It is difficult to imagine the design of a living room or a reception hall where a sofa with a corner configuration cannot successfully fit into the overall design.

The standard straight sofa is used everywhere and in its compact version. In this variety you can find the greatest variety for every taste and budget.

In general, the category of small sofas is in great demand among the owners of apartments and private houses.
