While it’s sometimes thought that “modern” interiors are cold and minimalist, in today’s homes, contemporary interiors are comfortable and welcoming without being cluttered and dark. Today’s contemporary style is equally appropriate for offices and stores, loft apartments and traditional homes.

What Is Contemporary Style?

Fundamentally, a contemporary style of decorating is defined by simplicity, subtle sophistication, deliberate use of texture, and clean lines. Interiors tend to showcase space rather than things.

Things that are modern and current with the styles of the moment are contemporary style. By focusing on color, space, and shape, contemporary interiors are sleek and fresh. To achieve the look of a contemporary home, it’s important to stick to some basic rules.

Uses of Color

Neutrals, black, and white are the main colors in contemporary style interiors. Black is often used for grounding and defining a contemporary style room. Furniture pieces should make a bold statement but at the same time be simple and uncluttered, without curves or decoration. Smooth, clean, geometric shapes are essential. Upholstered furniture often wears black, white, or other neutral tones, using the natural fibers found in wool, cotton, linen, silk, jute to add textural appeal. Pillows in clean geometric shapes add a shot of color and texture.

Use a basic background and shout out with your favorite color on a furniture piece that stands out. Less is more! Sofas, chairs, and ottomans often have exposed legs. Beds and chairs usually omit skirts, trims, fringes, or tassels. Don’t use ruffles, excessive carved details, fringe, or floral prints. Abolish cute and small—go basic, bare, bold, and structural.

Flooring

Floors in a contemporary style home should be bare and smooth, using wood, tile, or vinyl. If you must use some carpet for sound control or warmth, choose commercial grades. Add color and texture with plain or geometric-patterned area rugs.

Lighting Considerations and Art

Track lighting and recessed lighting help to wash a wall in light. In both home renovations and new construction, consider installing cove lighting or indirect light. Include color and metallic elements on the light fixtures.

Use spotlights or can lighting directed at a painting, poster, or print. These will help to draw the eye to the pieces you want to focus on. Contemporary style sculptures or framed art can be placed at eye level by placing them on a structural column or pedestal.

Frames in high-gloss or matte black, natural wood, or metal finishes are great for artwork. If you must put several pieces together, hang them close together, so they create the feeling of one large piece. Don’t clutter contemporary-style rooms with collections or too many pieces. Many of us use the phrases “modern design” and “contemporary design” interchangeably—but they don’t actually mean the same thing. Modern design refers to a specific design movement, the Modernist movement, which dates back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Contemporary design is a more general term, referring to styles of the present and future. 

“Modern design refers to a movement that began in the early-20th century and lasted through the post-war era,” Alessandra Wood, design historian and Vice President of Style at Modsy, says. “Contemporary design, on the other hand, is a term used to describe a new interpretation of the modern movement. This style first blossomed in the 1980s and 1990s.”

Both styles tend to be pretty minimal, but where modern design is about function and accessibility, contemporary design is freer with its bright colors, chunky shapes, and sleek materials. These are just some of the ways you can tell the design styles apart.

The biggest difference between modern and contemporary design? Modern design references a specific design movement, whereas contemporary design is a more general term describing what’s on-trend now. But, the styles also look different. While both appreciate minimalism, clean lines, and well-defined shapes, contemporary design feels much colder and starker than modern design. 

“If you were comparing them side by side, contemporary design is much more stark and sleek, extremely minimalist, and has a more streamlined, sterile vibe,” Curtis says. “A modern home will have a much warmer feel, with more layers, more organic elements, and a slightly earthier, cozier vibe.”

Modern design nods to the Modernist movement, which began in the late 1800s. The design movement was incredibly practical: it favored functional furniture, embraced clean lines, and kept unnecessary decoration to a minimum.

“The terms ‘less is more’ and ‘form follows function’ define the modern movement,” Wood says.

Tip 1: Put Function First

Modern design is chiefly practical, so design with function in mind. Consider how you like to use your space and what furniture you need. Then, stock up on sleek pieces that get the job done.

Tip 2: Favor Accessible Materials

Modern design was made for the masses, so it favored materials that were budget-friendly and easy to manufacture. “Modern design often uses materials that allowed for industrial manufacture at the time—for example, tubular steel, fiberglass, and plywood,” Wood says. Score a plywood table and some fiberglass chairs, and you’ll be well on your way to a modern space. 

Tip 3: Snag Some Classic Modern Furniture

There are some modern design classics you can still buy today. “I love to integrate iconic pieces, such as chairs or lighting, into a space to create a moment of drama,” Wood says.

And Aaron Taber, principal designer at Retro Interiors, agrees. “I love incorporating classically styled furnishings from Knoll and Le Corbusier,” he says.

Taber says he also looks for classically modern pieces, like credenzas with clean slab doors, kidney-shaped coffee tables, and square-line sofas. Even if these pieces don’t come from an iconic brand, they’re still recognizably modern.

Tip 4: Keep Décor to a Minimum

Known for its clean lines and sleek silhouettes, modern design is pretty minimal. So when in doubt, declutter.

“Pare back and edit out pieces,” Ginger Curtis, owner and principal designer at Urbanology Designs, says. “The modern style really calls for the use of negative space.”

Keep embellishments to a minimum, and Curtis recommends warming up your space with textured pieces and natural accents.

“While contemporary design is ever-changing, it is currently a style that incorporates a lot of smooth, sleek finishes and materials,” Curtis says.

“I love to incorporate a large, low, blocky sectional [to add] a loungey feel to a space,” Wood says. Look for something that’s chunky and cozy, but that still boasts the clean lines and well-defined shapes you’d expect from contemporary design.

If you talk about modern style, guided by the name alone, you might think that the direction means compliance with modern living conditions. In fact, the modern style in the interior is characterized by the complete opposite of the traditional concept of residential design. Nevertheless, modern style can and should be used when decorating an apartment (house), since it is no less functional, comfortable and interesting.

Features of the modern direction of interior design

• Compliance with fashion trends.

• Straight lines and well-defined shapes.

• The use of plain textiles without sticky prints.

Contemporary Living Room Design

The discreet luxury of modern style is most noticeable in the living room. In a room designed for meetings with friends and relatives, there is a cozy but discreet atmosphere. This impression is created by neutral solid colors – beige, gray, white, brown.

There may be minimal inclusions of bright colors in the details. Orange, purple, blue, olive, mint, turquoise, yellow make the interior of the hall more interesting and cheerful. Lighting plays a very important role, and large chandeliers and wall sconces serve as an additional interior decoration.

The floor in a modern living room is a laminate or parquet of a calm shade, in the center there can be a plain carpet of a suitable color. Of the furniture, there is certainly a rather strict sofa, a small coffee table, sometimes there are several shelves (often closed).

It is almost impossible to imagine a living room without a huge LCD TV. An electric fireplace or a large aquarium with beautiful lighting can also be located next to it. As for the decor, it is usually presented in the form of one or two paintings or a series of black and white photographs on the walls, vases with artificial branches, a large potted plant. Textiles in modern design, as a rule, are monophonic, and the color of the curtains echoes the upholstery of the sofa or soft pillows.

Modern style bedroom interior

Neatness and cleanliness – that’s the impression left by the bedroom, decorated according to the rules of modern design. Here, as in the living room, relaxed tones in achromatic pastel colors dominate, illuminated by soft golden light from ceiling and side lamps.

The harmony of proportions is very noticeable in the setting – the pronounced horizontal of a wide bed is complemented by equally active vertical lines: these can be curtains with folds, a wall panel up to the ceiling at the head of the bed, a wardrobe or a high niche for TV.

The monochromatic neutrality of gray-beige colors in the sleeping room is softened by natural textiles of bed linen, velvety carpets and bedspreads, wooden textures of decoration or furniture. With the absence of unnecessary decor, patterns and color contrasts, the modern bedroom remains spacious and airy, contributing to good rest and recuperation.

Modern style kitchen design

Characteristic features of the modern kitchen – maximum convenience and functionality, based on the effective use of every square centimeter. The set looks unusually laconic, and sometimes you can’t even notice it at all – smooth facades without handles, decor and fittings resemble an ordinary wall. But, of course, such an impression is deceptive – inside there are capacious storage systems equipped according to the latest standards.

As for the color schemes, restrained tones of black and white and beige and brown colors prevail here. Saturated colors in the interior of a truly stylish kitchen occupy no more than 10-15% and can be found in individual elements of the headset, wall decor, apron trim, dishes. Of the materials, high-quality plastic, polished wood, laminated MDF panels, artificial stone, tempered glass and chrome-plated metal are most often used.

Modern style in the interior of the hallway

For a small hallway, modern style is perhaps the best possible solution. The restrained monotony of the palette, the cleanliness and neatness of the interior from the threshold create a good impression of the apartment as a whole. In such a corridor, everything looks like a single ensemble – a neutral finish is in harmony with a set of furniture, door decoration, decor, and a large mirror and warm lighting give the room a cozy look.

Modern style bathroom interior

Calm yet sophisticated, the spa room is the perfect choice for a modern apartment. By following the current design rules, even the cramped bathroom can be made comfortable and attractive. This is facilitated by the clarity of forms, minimalism and high-tech aesthetics of modern style. Against a smooth background of a discreet finish under polished wood, granite or marble, snow-white plumbing, chrome faucets, mirrors, glass partitions look especially impressive. All this makes it easy to maintain order and cleanliness in the bathroom, enjoying a comfortable environment for many years.

Studio apartment in a modern style: ideas

Recently, small-sized apartments are being arranged in such a way that everything necessary for life remains in sight. In order to save space, blank walls between rooms are often absent. One large room is logically divided into functional areas – a bedroom, a guest room, a kitchen. Sometimes a work area is also allocated. Considering that the studios are positioned more as housing for one or two adults, a nursery in such a layout is almost never found.

Designing a studio in a modern style implies following the same rules as in the design of one room – using no more than 2-3 primary colors, combining matching textures, repeating accents and decor. At the same time, each zone may be somewhat different – in the kitchen it will be smooth stone-like textures, in the sleeping area – soft textiles, in the living room – practical woolen or velor upholstery combined with bright pillows.

In the interior of the studio, modern design may include some details from such recent trends as Scandinavian style (patchwork tiles, white-gray-blue tones, ethnic decor of the Nordic countries) and loft (pendant metal lamps, brickwork, separate pieces of furniture made of roughly processed wood).

Description

The bachelor’s program “Design” has existed at the RANEPA since 2011. A distinctive feature of the educational process at the School of Design is the harmonious combination of theoretical studies and practices at the best venues in Russia and the world. Our students become winners of all-Russian and international competitions, take part in exhibitions both in Russia and abroad. Graduates of the School of Design not only easily cope with visualization tasks, but also know how to work in project teams.

Our workshops are located in the center of the cultural life of the capital, within walking distance from key Moscow museums and major cultural institutions: GES-2 House of Culture, Multimedia Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts. Pushkin and the Roerich Museum, the Museum of Moscow, the Russian State Library and the Museum of Architecture. Shchusev, the exhibition complex Manege, the complex of the Moscow Kremlin Museums, the State Tretyakov Gallery and the Design Museum.

Graduate careers

Graduates of the program work in design studios, branding, creative, advertising and digital agencies, and also have the opportunity to create their own creative startups.

There were a lot of interesting moments for all 4 years of study. I must say right away that the first course was not easy, as it was the beginning of a new life: new acquaintances, new places, a new system of education. I began to doubt whether I was in the right place. In my second year, with the start of advanced disciplines, I finally joined the atmosphere of the Design School of the ION RANEPA. We also had a course in photography, which immediately hooked me. Later, photography became my second vocation. Then foreign internships began: we went with teachers to several workshops in France. Such internships really unite students, help to see different methods in design education, and provide an opportunity to personally meet foreign experts. It’s great that the Institute of Social Sciences gives students such an opportunity!

Modern interior design – 50 photos There may be elements of hi-tech, minimalism, scandi, eco-style, loft. But the result is not fusion or eclecticism, but a modern interior.

The core of this style is functionality. Each item has its own role, there are no exclusively decorative elements in such projects. This does not make the environment look “boring” or empty, on the contrary, the absence of visual noise makes the interiors very stylish and comfortable.

What is modern style: its main features

1. Abundance of free space;
2. Clear division of different functional areas;
3. The minimum amount of decor and any things on open surfaces;
4. Graphic, active use of straight lines;
5. The predominance of neutral shades, a minimum of prints.

Abundance of free space

Free space plays the role of the most important interior element in modern interiors. When all the free space of the apartment is occupied by furniture or other items, the atmosphere looks cramped and “cluttered” – now this approach to interior design is hopelessly outdated.

If any detail is in doubt, and you are thinking about whether to keep it, you should definitely refuse it. And it doesn’t matter what it will be – an armchair, a floor lamp or a picture. If the thing does not perform any functions, but is just “for beauty”, we get rid of it. And do not try to take the vacant place with something else. Let it remain empty: the more “air”, the better.

This principle applies not only to the presence of objects, but also to their placement. It is desirable that there be at least a small distance between all the elements of the decor, and the larger it is, the more effective the result will be. No need to put furniture close to each other and walls, now this is not relevant.

The worst option is when large items are arranged in a monolithic composition, which is also located near the wall. Ideally, the design should feel light and spacious – and that requires space. Therefore, in the interior of a modern apartment, it is recommended to avoid such heavy compositions. They can almost always be divided into several simpler and more functional elements without sacrificing comfort.

A simple example: a few decades ago, “walls” came into fashion, which had long gone out of fashion. At the same time, there are still a lot of these walls in many new furniture collections, they are in demand. Although, from the point of view of functionality, the wall can be easily “broken down” into a system of cabinets, racks and shelves – these are the options that should be preferred. They not only look much lighter and more relevant, but also have another important advantage – variability. Having such a set of furniture, you can change the layout more often, and it definitely will not get bored.

Visual separation of different functional areas

Zoning is one of the simplest and most affordable tools to make the interior as functional as possible.

The following solutions can be used to delimit zones:

• Partitions made of slats, glass, filament curtains – they help to delicately and visually separate locations with different functionality. For example, to separate the dining room from the kitchen, the bed from the work or study area. Open floor plans without walls look modern and are very relevant now. In addition, such lightweight partitions make it very interesting to divide the space into any number of functional zones.
• Furniture located in the central part of the room – it can be a sofa, a rack, a bar counter or another item that will take on the role of a delimiter. At the same time, the interior design remains holistic. The living space is perceived as a single space in which everyone can find their own corner where they can work, read, study or play and do other things.
• The use of color blocks – such solutions do not require any physical boundaries between locations at all. Functional areas can be distinguished by different colors and textures of the flooring, walls and even the ceiling. It looks very impressive and does not require a single extra square centimeter of space.

The minimum amount of decor and any things

One of the main tasks is to minimize visual noise, which consists of visible objects. And here we are talking not so much about free space, but about the number of things that catch our eye.

To do this, you can use the following methods:

• We always prefer closed storage. We put everything we can behind the doors and in drawers to keep open surfaces as empty as possible.
• We place small items that are often used in groups in aesthetic containers – baskets, boxes, decorative boxes, etc. This applies to things such as chargers, cosmetics, accessories. If it is not possible to store them in a closed form, provide stylish organizers for their placement that will not violate the integrity of the concept.

Graphic

Straight lines are associated with conciseness and rigor, while smooth lines are associated with redundancy and lack of frames.

From this point of view, modern design style is an example of structuredness and concentration, because it is straight lines that provide maximum efficiency in everything – from choosing the shape of furniture and print patterns to zoning rooms.

This gives the interiors a very dynamic look, and can even be made a bit “aggressive” if desired. This is quite in line with the spirit of the times: decisiveness and confidence are now in trend. And this character of the situation is just built on the use of straight lines that form angles, intersections, blocks.

Colors

Contemporary design puts human needs at the forefront, not aesthetics (although, of course, this is also very important). It is understood that at home a person wants to relax, and for this, the design of the premises in neutral, soothing colors is best suited.

Bright colors can also be used, but they usually act as accents. Moreover, these catchy details may not be part of the decoration, but decorative elements that are easily replaced at any time.

This approach helps the interior to be an ideal base, a background for the content that is relevant at the moment. For example, it can be decoration of premises for the New Year and other holidays.

In a different frame, the same modern interior will be transformed beyond recognition – it looks very impressive in the photo and feels great “live”. Therefore, despite the restrained color scheme, this design does not get bored over time.

6. No obsession with trends. Despite the fact that contemporary itself is a trend, it has no connection to current trends. You can introduce fashionable details, or you can refuse them, relying on greater conciseness. You can take note of trendy compositional techniques, or you can be guided by the classical rules of composition. You can use art objects in the decor, or you can hang classic landscapes or retro-style photos on the walls.

1. Lack of brightness, sharpness. If you are thinking of an unobtrusive apartment design in light colors, contemporary is the perfect choice. But if you are a fan of sharp colors, bright accents, expressive and contrasting interiors, this direction may not suit you.

3. No simplifications. The direction implies, albeit laconic, but elegance. In such interiors, artificial flowers, home-made scandi posters, numerous framed amateur photographs, plastic planters and other obvious budgetary simplifications are unlikely to take root.

We have already mentioned above that when we say “modern”, we do not always mean contemporary in its purest form. A number of other styles fit this definition, the main thing is the presence of key signs of relevance and modernity. Furnishings should be functional, devoid of obvious frills, pretentiousness, kitsch, have a natural color scheme and be relatively neutral (in the broadest sense).

Is modern design one that makes “beautiful” or one that solves an important problem? Let’s look at examples.

Rethinking

You can rethink anything – for example, a material or a product. Make them modern: eco-friendly, affordable, simple. For example, come up with a new type of packaging, which, unlike bubble wrap or plastic, can be used an unlimited number of times without the cost of recycling (even it gets no more than 10% of all waste).

Modern design is one that solves an important problem. In this case, it helps to cope with the excess of non-recyclable packaging materials. Designer Kenji Abe has reimagined typical packaging with lightweight, porous modules that snap together at any angle, like building blocks. In them, as in a package, you can “wrap” something fragile, or “glue” an independent object from parts, such as a lampshade. Modules can be made from various materials, even old leather will do.

Justice

Portable Solar Distiller Henry Glogau

First of all – social. Unequal access to the resources necessary for life is a global problem. And instead of the commercial needs of the business, the quality of life of society becomes the priority of design. Striving for social justice means designing a distribution of resources that empowers an individual or an entire community while at the same time reducing the potential damage to nature.

Designed by New Zealander Henry Glogau won the Lexus Design Award Grand Prix in 2021. He modeled a mechanism reproducible in any conditions (Portable Solar Distiller), which allows you to purify and desalinate water using solar heat. The mechanism consists of a base – legs crossed with each other – and a large tent that collects moisture: water, getting inside the tent, is heated in the sun, and the condensate that forms on its surface is collected in a special container. The whole structure folds easily and can serve as a sun canopy.

Similar solutions already exist, but, as the author of the project notes, access to them is limited. The design itself can be reproduced independently using improvised materials – a plastic bottle, sticks, plastic awnings or bags.

Environmental

Agar Plasticity Kosuke Araki

57% of consumers are willing to change their shopping habits to reduce their environmental impact.

This is reflected in the design. Japanese designer Kosuke Araki proposed the use of agar-agar, a gelling material made from red and brown algae, as a replacement for plastic. Combining it with other food industry waste, such as algae residues or ash, the author obtained materials of different density and thickness.

Waterfall Tap is another sustainable project, but in the field of interior design. Russians Ilana Lavrova and Alexey Boriskin modeled the mixer in the form of an arch and installed motion sensors on it. The mixer allows you to significantly save water: it is supplied only to that section of the arch to which a hand or, for example, a cup is brought.

Recycling

PressPlastic Bulyash Todaeva

Environmental problems can be solved by creating new opportunities for waste disposal or recycling. Moscow-based designer Bulyash Todayeva has designed a heat press for recycling plastic into sheet material, which can be recycled 4-5 more times after molding. She proposes to use the sheets in architecture, the production of furniture or accessories.

The growth of the “fast” fashion industry – fast fashion – has led to a rapid increase in textile waste. Japanese designer Eriko Yoko suggested using them to grow plants: recycled polyester fibers turned into small tubs shaped like mills.

Inclusiveness

InTempo Alina Golovatyuk

The ability of designers to notice other people’s needs, create a friendlier environment for them, and help solve everyday problems.

An example is the Intempo application, developed by Ukrainian designer Alina Golovatyuk. It is designed for those who are experiencing panic attacks or social phobia. A special case is used with the application: touching the dots on it or on the screen to the beat of the music will help you calm down in any environment – even a very crowded crowd. These relaxation techniques can help you deal with panic attacks more easily (although they are not a substitute for professional help).

Another example is a multi-tool kitchen board for people with disabilities. You can cut food on it with one hand: the surface of the board changes to hold them in place.

Essentialism

Having Nothing and Yet Possessing Everything Ahran Won

If the principle of minimalism is “less is better than more”, then the principle of essentialism is “less is better”. Essentialism pays attention only to what is really necessary and important, clearly setting priorities.

This design principle is exemplified by Korean designer Aaran Won: a suitcase-sized capsule containing six plastic boxes that can be used to make everyday essentials. For example, a bed if the airport delays a flight, or a desk for working outside the home.

Interactivity

KnitX Irmandy Wicaksono

User interaction with design is no longer surprising. Projects that form a new experience become valuable. For example, American engineer Irmandy Vikaksono creates fabrics that can respond with sound to physical stimuli (pressure, touch and stretch) and environmental conditions (light and dark, cold and heat). His KnitX project explores the boundaries between electronics, textiles and musical interfaces, making everyday fabrics immersive: the sound a fabric makes will depend on how the user interacts with it.

Another example of interactive design that brings new experiences is Luz interior lighting. A round lamp, similar to a porthole, changes color and intensity of light depending on the weather conditions outside the window and the time of day. The project of the Spanish designer Marina Mellado is designed to remove barriers between the internal and external environment and support the psychological state of the user: for example, if it is dark and rainy outside, the lamp will give a warm soft light, replacing the sun.

Modularity

PIXEL Hiroto Yoshizoe

Modularity refers to design solutions that are easy to replicate and scale. An example of a modular project is the Pixel interactive installation assembled from identical metal blocks. They reflect light and refract it, turning the image into a set of “pixels” – squares of light. These blocks can be used to build walls and partitions, and also to reproduce windows: the blocks convert light into pixels and reflect what is happening outside into the room.

Another example of scalable modules is the Terracotta Valley Wind cooling system, created by the Chinese design group Intsui Design. Terracotta modules are made from clay, an inexpensive and readily available material whose porous structure allows water to evaporate quickly. The creators propose to use these modules at metro stations: their shape increases the strength of the air flow that creates a train passing at high speed. Flows can be redirected, thus reducing the cost of ventilation.

The listed inventions are winners of the international competition Lexus Design Award. The main criterion for evaluating projects is their social significance.

Entries must meet the three values ​​of the award: anticipating innovation, looking for innovative solutions, and intriguing.
