Mark Up the Wall First

A good cabinet installation starts with a good layout. Measure from the highest point in the floor and draw a level line marking the top of the base cabinets. Measure up 19-1/2 in. from that line and draw another line for the bottom of the upper cabinets. Label the location of the kitchen wall cabinets and appliances on the wall. Draw a vertical line to line up the edge of the first cabinet to be installed. Finally, mark the stud locations as you begin a how to install kitchen cabinets project.

Position the First Cabinet

Set the first cabinet 1/4 in. from the positioning line and shim the base until the top is even with the horizontal line and level from front to back. Drive 2-1/2-in. screws through the back into the wall studs to anchor it.

Remove Cabinet Doors and Drawers

We’ve all seen painting projects where the hinges and hardware are covered with paint and paint is slopped over drawer interiors. It’s tempting to leave the doors in place for painting as you begin your how to paint kitchen cabinets project, but you’ll get a much neater and more professional-looking job by removing them, as well as all the hardware. On many modern cabinets, drawer fronts can be removed from the drawer by backing out a few screws. But if your drawer fronts are part of the drawer and can’t be removed, use masking tape to cover the drawer sides and bottom if you don’t want to paint them.

Shim Large Bows

Most of the time you can shim the cabinets as you go, but if there’s an extreme bow in the wall (more than 3/8 in. ), shim it out before you hang the cabinet. If you don’t, you may accidentally pull the back off the cabinet while fastening it into place. Hold a level across the wall, and slide a shim up from the bottom (go in from the top when you’re doing the top side) until it’s snug. Then pin or tape it into place.

Start With the Upper Cabinets

It’s easier to hang the uppers when you’re not hanging way over the base cabinets. To begin installing top cabinets, rest the uppers on a ledger board—it’ll ensure a nice, straight alignment and eliminate the frustration of holding the cabinets in place while screwing them to the wall. Once your top cabinets are installed, move on to the bottom kitchen cabinets.

Clamp, Drill and Fasten

When connecting two cabinets to each other, line up the face frames and clamp them together. Both cabinets should be fastened to the wall at this point, but you may have to loosen one cabinet or the other to get the frames to line up perfectly. Hand-screw clamps don’t flex, and less flex means a tighter grip. Predrill a 1/8-in. hole before screwing them together with a 2-1/2-in. screw. Choose the less noticeable cabinet of the two for drilling and placing the screw head.

Use a Block of Wood for Scribing

Another step in how to install cabinets is  to find the largest distance between the outside of the cabinet and the wall. Take that measurement and make a pencil mark on your filler strip (measure over right to left in this case). Clamp the filler onto the cabinet flush with the inside of the vertical rail. Measure over from the wall to your pencil mark, and make a scribing block that size. Use your block to trace a pencil line down the filler strip. Masking tape on the filler strip helps the pencil line show up better and protects the finish from the saw table.

Use Good Cabinet Mounting Screws

Many top cabinet makers prefer GRK’s R4 self-countersinking screw as their go-to cabinet mounting screws. You’ll pay accordingly, but why scrimp on screws when you’re spending thousands of dollars on cabinets? Whatever you do, don’t use drywall screws—they’ll just snap off and you’ll end up with an extra hole. Learn more about the R4 screws at grkfasteners.com.

Fasten the Back, Then Shim

Line up the base cabinets with the level line on the wall. Fasten the back of the cabinets to that line. Once the backs of the cabinets are level, use shims to level the sides. Take your time on this step—nobody likes to have eggs roll off a slanted countertop.

Measure the Gap

Measure the gap between the wall and the end cabinets at the top and bottom. Add 1/16 in. to each measurement and draw a cutting line on the backside of a filler strip.

Cut the Filler Strip

Clamp the filler strip and cut it at a 10-degree bevel from the backside so the wide edge of the “keeper” piece faces the front.

Fit and Install the Filler

Test-fit the filler strip and plane the sharp edge of the bevel until it fits perfectly. Set the strip in place, pre-drill and screw it to the cabinet frame.

Use 2x2s to Secure Cabinets to the Floor for Kitchen Island Installation

Cabinets that make up islands and peninsulas need to be secured to the floor. Join the island cabinets and set them in place. To begin kitchen island installation, first trace an outline of the cabinets on the floor. Screw 2x2s to the floor 1/2 in. on the inside of the line to account for the thickness of the cabinets. Anchor the island cabinets to the 2x2s with screws. If needed, place flooring blocks under the 2x2s.

Raise the Cabinets for Flooring

If the kitchen flooring is going to be hardwood or tile, and you’re installing it after the cabinets, you’ll have to raise the cabinets off the floor or the dishwasher won’t fit under the countertop. Use blocks to represent the finished floor height, and add those distances to the guide line for the base cabinet tops. Hold the blocks back a bit from the front so the flooring can tuck underneath. Your flooring guys will love you for this.

Cut Oversize Holes

Cutting exact size holes for water lines and drainpipes might impress your spouse or customer, but such precision is likely to result in unnecessary headaches for you. Cutting larger holes makes it easier to slide the cabinet into place and provides wiggle room for minor adjustments. No one’s going to notice the oversize holes once the cabinet is filled with dish soaps, scrubbers and recycling bins.

Use the Door Rail as a Guide

The location of knobs and pulls isn’t written in stone, but there are some standard practices. One good rule of thumb is to line up a knob with the top of the bottom door rail. If you’re installing door pulls, line up the bottom of the pull with the top of the door rail. Always center them on the door stile.

Temporarily Attach the Hardware

If you’re not sure about where the knobs and pulls are to be installed, stick a piece of reusable putty adhesive to the hardware and try out different spots. Mark the one you like with a pencil and install the rest of the hardware accordingly. Reusable adhesive is available at hardware and art supply stores.

    Hinged kitchen looks really impressive

    Today it is already quite difficult to surprise anyone with a new design solution, as the market for kitchen sets is full of novelties and non-standard options. However, the innovation that we will talk about in this article is, indeed, an original idea. We are talking about wall-mounted kitchens .

    Suspended or wall-mounted kitchens differ from other solutions by the complete or partial absence of legs and a floor base for the set. It turns out that the furniture “floats” above the floor. This idea is not new when it comes to TV cabinets, document racks and so on. But it was precisely in the world of kitchens that this decision came relatively recently and began to gain popularity. After all, the hinged kitchen looks very impressive and unusual.

    If you want to buy a wall-mounted kitchen, we advise you to first consider all the pros and cons of this option, which we will discuss below.

    Wall-mounted or wall-mounted kitchen: advantages

    Wall-mounted kitchen sets have a lot of important advantages:

    • Ergonomics;
    • Easy access to any cabinet;
    • Cabinet capacity is no worse than standard solutions;
    • It is more convenient to move along and near the headset – there are no obstacles in front of your feet;
    • Better air circulation in the room;
    • More free space;
    • Easy access to all indoor flooring – floors are easier and more convenient to clean;
    • In the event of a flood, the kitchen set will not be damaged;
    • Aesthetics.

    And one more important point is, oddly enough, additional storage. Yes, because the space under the cabinets can also be functionally used. For example, “hide” a robot vacuum cleaner under the headset or rearrange the bowls of pets there, which usually get in the way under your feet. But, the main thing here is not to overdo it, otherwise you can get a cluttered effect that visually ruins the whole picture.

    Thus, the suspended kitchen is a futuristic solution that does not exclude such important points as functionality and practicality. Moreover, in some places, these figures will even be higher than in ordinary cuisine.

    Wall-mounted kitchens: disadvantages or nuances

    Wall-mounted kitchens have several difficulties

    But, as elsewhere, wall-mounted kitchen sets have several disadvantages and nuances that you should be aware of:

    • High price compared to standard sets. It is imperative to use high-quality materials, fixtures and fittings so that the entire structure can withstand the intended load. In addition, such headsets are most often made to order;
    • There is an additional load on the walls, so when renovating the kitchen, you need to additionally strengthen them. An ordinary drywall wall will definitely not withstand such a weight;
    • It will most likely be difficult to choose a kitchen set in the right style. For example, a wall-mounted kitchen will fit perfectly into a minimalist or modern design. But it may not be possible to find a suitable option for Country or Provence, since these styles will not be in harmony with the futuristic solution;
    • It is difficult to correctly place large household appliances. If in a standard kitchen, for example, a dishwasher or a refrigerator will easily fit flush with cabinets, then in the case of a hanging set, you will have to rack your brains.

    As you can see, wall-mounted kitchens have many advantages, but there are also important disadvantages that should not be forgotten when planning such a kitchen set.

    Hanging kitchens – what it is, types, how to choose the right one

    A few years ago, a fresh and unusual trend appeared in design – hanging furniture, which soared above the floor, as if by magic.

    Surprisingly, it all started with an ordinary swing. The ones that are on almost every playground. Someone came up with a brilliant idea to install their “light version” in a residential building, and away we go. Swings have replaced comfortable chairs, which today can be found in every third interior of attics and living rooms.

    Following them, designers began to create creative hanging shelves. They were used to organize space and store books, kitchen utensils, various decorations and plant pots. Further – more, and now the flight of design fantasy has reached more massive pieces of furniture: tables and beds. The effect of lightness and airiness, which such furniture created in the room, was so impressive that entire sets began to be assembled from “floating” furniture, and it settled in all the functional rooms of residential buildings for a long time.

    Features of such a kitchen

    First you need to draw a line between hanging and floating furniture, although even experts can not always point it out. The first has no legs at all. Such furniture is fixed on the walls or suspended from the ceiling. If we are talking about a kitchen set, then the first method of fastening is used here. There are no lower supports in such furniture. Upper drawers, pencil cases, lower cabinets, shelves – everything is mounted on the walls. To ensure that the suspension headset is safe to use, the highest quality fasteners are used. Chairs, shelves or racks are also suspended from the ceiling, less often beds.

    Floating furniture with hidden legs. For example, a bed or nightstand stands firmly on the floor, but the legs are located deep under the bottom, and not around the perimeter. For kitchen sets and other massive furniture, a combined option can be used when the elements are attached to the wall, but hidden supports are added to the structure for insurance.

    Advantages and disadvantages of a hanging type set

    The main advantage of a hanging kitchen is its effectiveness. This design solution looks fresh and stylish, although the days when this trend was considered a novelty are long gone. Hanging kitchen sets have many more advantages, and almost all of them are directly related to their practicality:

    • Comfort. It is much more convenient to work in the kitchen, since the hostess’s legs do not rest against the lower cabinets during the cooking process.
    • Easy to clean. Ordinary floor sets are extremely difficult to move in order to thoroughly wash the floors during general cleaning. Over the years, dirt and dust clogged in the cracks. Remember that the kitchen is one of the dirtiest areas in the house. Due to its constant use, fat settles on all surfaces. From above, it is covered with dust, and over time, this plaque turns into a crust. The suspended kitchen does not create obstacles during cleaning, which means that the floors will be constantly clean.
    • Easy access to any point of the headset, comfortable cabinet depth, spacious work area – suspended kitchens are not inferior in ergonomics to conventional models.
    • Versatility. Hanging kitchen integrates into any modern style – hi-tech, loft, eco, minimalism, Scandinavian, futurism, fusion.
    • Additional storage space for kitchen utensils. If necessary, small household appliances or containers with various important, but temporarily unnecessary things can be placed under the lower drawers, if the depth of the headset allows and this does not spoil the aesthetics of the interior.

    The disadvantages of hanging kitchens include their high cost, complex installation with additional preparation of the wall surface, the lack of ready-made solutions and the possibility of manufacturing only to order. Before buying, you need to take into account one important nuance – you should not save on fasteners in any case!

    Ways of fixing furniture

    In the suspended kitchen, all modules are fixed to the wall. If the upper cabinets can still be fixed with dowels and screws, then this method is not suitable for the lower drawers, because here we are talking about completely different loads. You could use hooks, but this option can hardly be called easy. The boxes will take a very long time to adjust and align. If for the upper cabinets a difference of a couple of millimeters is not critical, then in the lower tier it will lead to the formation of gaps. The master will not be able to get the effect of a “monolithic” surface, and the appearance of the kitchen will be hopelessly damaged. We offer three popular, and most importantly reliable solutions:

    On rails. The option is suitable for cases where the headset occupies the entire wall. Special profiles are mounted on its surface, and conventional fasteners for cabinets are additionally used.

    On metal corners. Each module is attached to several corners. Fastening on average withstands a load of up to 120 kg. There may be problems with the height adjustment of the modules.

    Mounting rail. The best option, which can only be used for perfectly smooth walls. First, a profile is mounted on their surface, and then special canopy hooks are fixed on it. This method allows you to easily adjust the height of each module.

    If the wall has defects and irregularities, then you should not immediately abandon the option with a mounting profile. You just need to pre-prepare the surface.

    Tips for Choosing the Perfect Hanging Kitchen

    Buyers should heed the pros’ advice before ordering a custom floating kitchen:

    • Chipboard cabinets are the cheapest, but they won’t last long. The characteristics of MDF are much better, but this material has more weight. Solid wood is rarely used because of the high cost, but this material can be called the most reliable. For hanging kitchen cabinets, inexpensive species are usually used – pine or birch. The facades of the headset are made from oak, alder and ash.
    • Soaring kitchen fittings should be light and durable.
    • For facades it is better to choose a lightweight material. The width of the sheets usually varies between 8-12 mm. You can choose chipboard, MDF, solid wood, aluminum, glass. The latter option perfectly copes with the aggressive microclimate of the kitchen, but due to excess weight it is usually used as inserts. Glass forms a good tandem with light aluminum, which is rarely used for the manufacture of kitchen facades.
    • Natural stone or solid wood is not recommended for countertops due to their heavy weight. For example, you can choose a high-quality imitation that repeats the texture of a natural material, but does not create an additional load on the structure.
    • Refrigerator, washing machine and dishwasher must not be suspended. In the process of work, they create vibrations that will harm the fasteners and loosen them. This is about safety, so don’t risk it! Usually household appliances are placed against a separate wall.
