20 of the Best Paint Colors for the Whole House – Welsh Design Studio

Let me just start by saying that I’m a strong advocate for using different paint colors in different rooms of your home. Paint is one of the best and easiest ways to add personality to a space, and bring together the design elements in a room. However, there is always going to be a need for that perfect, neutral base color that ties together the hallways and other main areas of the house with surrounding rooms. Or, perhaps you’ve got a rental property, and just want to paint every room in the house a neutral shade that will work with any style and appeal to tenants. So, what are the best paint colors for the whole house? I’ve complied a list of 20 go-to, neutral shades that designers swear by, and should be at the top of  your list of colors to try for your house color palette.

White walls are making a comeback in a big way right now, and are very much on-trend this year. Pair soft white walls with contrasting black windows/doors, and lots of natural wood for a stunning and stylish room design. You’ll see several of my favorite whites for the whole-house listed here, but check out my post on the best white paint colors for interiors for more great options.

1. Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee (OC-45)

Swiss Coffee is a true classic that has been a designer favorite for years. It is a beautiful, warm, creamy hue that is versatile, tranquil, and works great with earthy colors. Order a peel-and-stick sample sheet of BM Swiss Coffee HERE

2. Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace (OC-65)

Chantilly Lace is a crisp, pure white with subtle cool undertones. If you want to create a bright white space, this is a great paint to try. Also works well for trim and ceilings. Order your sample of Chantilly Lace HERE.

3. Sherwin Williams Alabaster (SW 7008)

Alabaster was Sherwin-Williams’ 2016 Color of the Year, and there’s no doubt it has become a favorite white for designers. My girl Joanna Gaines used this color to paint the main areas of her own house, and it is one of her go-to whites for walls and shiplap. Alabaster is a warm white and brings a serene softness to any room. Want to learn more about Alabaster…check out this post. Order a sample of SW Alabaster HERE.

4. Benjamin Moore Paper White (OC-55)

Paper White is a very pale gray that can actually look white in certain light. If you’re looking for a very pale gray, this is a great paint choice to lighten and brighten your space. Paper White leans toward the cool side, but has a nice softness to it. I love it paired with bright white trim, and it also tends to work well with Carrara marble in bathrooms and kitchens.  Order a sample of BM Paper White HERE.

Greige is just a blend of gray and beige. It can be the best of both worlds, appealing to those that like the look of gray, but aren’t sure about moving away from the more traditional feeling of beige. Greiges make a great whole-house paint color choice because they tend to go with everything and appeal to everyone! Here are some beautiful greiges for your home.

5. Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter (HC-172)

Probably the most beloved greige paint color out there, it’s no wonder designers love Revere Pewter. It has just the right mix of gray and beige to satisfy almost everyone, and it works with pretty much every style. This is a fantastic choice for open floor plans, and is a paint color I recommend often to my clients for the whole-house and/or main living areas. In well-lit spaces, Revere Pewter will give you the gray appearance you are looking for, but warm up nicely in the evenings to create a cozy feeling. Order a peel-and-stick sample sheet of BM Revere Pewter HERE

6. Sherwin Williams Colonnade Gray (SW 7641)

Colonnade Gray is another favorite, and happens to be the whole-house paint color we chose for our Colorado home. It is sometimes referred to as the Sherwin Williams version of Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter, and it’s true that they are very close in depth, warmth, and tone. So close, in fact, you could consider them twins. However, some report that Colonnade Gray is just a touch more neutral, in that it won’t take on any of the taupe or green undertones that are sometimes seen with Revere Pewter. Regardless, Colonnade Gray is another fantastic medium greige that works beautifully in all different lighting conditions, and with any design style. Order a peel-and-stick sample sheet of SW Colonnade Gray HERE

7. Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist (OC-27)

Balboa Mist is a beautiful light greige with a faint, hardly-noticeable purple undertone, and is one of Benjamin Moore’s most popular neutral colors. Its soft, elegant undertone gives it a chameleon quality, such that the color changes slightly during the day, and in different types of lighting. The overall color is a light, neutral gray, with a relaxing, warm vibe. Due to its tendency to shift, this is one color that should be thoroughly tested on your wall in different lighting conditions before committing. Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray (SW 7029)

Agreeable Gray is one color that everyone seems to agree is a perfectly balanced greige paint. Not too dark or too light, it’s a great choice for every room in the house. Unlike some other greige paints, Agreeable Gray has no detectable taupe or purple undertones. It has become a favorite in the interior design world, and is one that designers everywhere wholeheartedly recommend. You can read more about Agreeable Gray in my post here. Order a peel-and-stick sample sheet of SW Agreeable Gray HERE

9. Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray (HC-173)

Edgecomb Gray is a lovely, soft greige that leans a little more to the beige side than others in this category. This color will appear light gray in rooms with good natural light, but appear more like a creamy beige in warm lighting. It has an understated, classic, and reserved nature, which is why it pairs so well with a wide range of natural materials like wood, stone, and granite. Order a peel-and-stick sample sheet of BM Edgecomb Gray HERE

Over the last decade, gray overtook beige to became the most popular wall color for every room in the house. Grays are very flexible, offering a fantastic neutral backdrop for a wide range of design styles. For a whole-house color, I recommend going with a warm or neutral light-medium gray, and I’ve rounded up some great options for you.

10. Benjamin Moore Classic Gray (OC-23)

A minimal, barely-there gray that almost reads white. This is a great choice if you just want to add the slightest contrast against white trim, but want your overall look to be very light and bright. Classic Gray is a great option for dark spaces that don’t get a lot of natural light. and it has a slight warmth to it, which might not appeal to someone looking for a darker, true gray. Order a peel-and-stick sample sheet of BM Classic Gray HERE

11. SW Repose Gray (SW 7015)

Repose Gray is an excellent light-medium gray paint, that is not too dark or heavy, and is often described as the “perfect gray color. ”  It looks fantastic against pure white trim, and is a great whole-house choice for those of you who are looking for something that looks like a true gray. Order a peel-and-stick sample sheet of SW Repose Gray HERE

12. Benjamin Moore Silver Chain (BM 1472)

Possibly one of the truest grays out there, Silver Chain has no apparent purple or blue/green undertones. While all grays have slight undertones, this is one that stays gray on the walls in almost any lighting. Its medium value (lightness versus darkness) creates a beautiful contrast against white trim or cabinetry, and its neutral nature lets it work with any design style. Order a peel-and-stick sample sheet of BM Silver Chain HERE

13. Benjamin Moore Stonington Gray (HC-170)

Ask any designer, and it’s likely they know all about Stonington Gray. Part of Benjamin Moore’s historic color collection, Stonington Gray is a timeless color that works in both traditional and more contemporary homes. This light gray has a slight blue undertone, which means that it can read a tad blue in some light, but it isn’t a cold gray. Works great with cool tones often seen in marble, Order a peel-and-stick sample sheet of BM Stonington Gray HERE

14. Benjamin Moore Gray Owl (OC-52)

Gray Owl is always on my list of gray paints to recommend to clients, and it’s a color you’ll find over and over again in photos of designer rooms. Gray Owl is considered to be a true gray, but it has subtle blue/green undertones. Because of this, it can look VERY different from one room to another, so it’s important to test this one out in a variety of lighting conditions. Order a peel-and-stick sample sheet of BM Gray Owl HERE

15. Benjamin Moore Moonshine (OC-56)

Moonshine has quickly become a Benjamin Moore bestseller. It is a pale gray with green undertones, and looks beautiful when paired with soft blues and greens, so it’s often used in bedrooms. However, Moonshine’s etherial nature and ability to add subtle color without competing for your attention makes it a great choice for the entire house. Order a peel-and-stick sample sheet of BM Moonshine HERE

Even though gray has become today’s neutral color of choice, beige will always remain a timeless classic. Its ability to work in a variety of rooms, and warm up a space, makes it a perfect choice for a whole-house neutral.

16. Sherwin Williams Kilim Beige (SW 6106)

Back when beige ruled the world, Kilim Beige was king. Kilim Beige is a very warm, comfortable beige that has been a top seller for Sherwin Williams for many years. If you love beige, and want the feel of a cozy space, this is a great choice for you! It looks fantastic with rich wood tones, soft blue/greens, and natural stone. Order a peel-and-stick sample sheet of SW Kilim Beige HERE

17. Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan (HC-81)

Manchester Tan is a light, sandy beige that is neutral enough to work well throughout the house. It’s a favorite amongst designers due to its flexible, casual nature and ability to play well with others. With just a touch of gray in it, it pairs very well with other grays in the home, like stainless steel and stone, and it looks beautiful with a wide variety of wood tones. Order a peel-and-stick sample sheet of BM Manchester Tan HERE

18. Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige (SW 7036)

A whole-house color should be versatile, which describes Accessible Beige to a tee. At the top of the list for Pottery Barn neutrals, Accessible Beige provides a great backdrop as a balanced, warm neutral color. Beige, yes, but with enough gray to keep it subtle and flexible for any room in the house. Accessible Beige is gorgeous in spaces with lots of natural light, and provides a warm elegance in the evenings. A great choice for modernizing your home, without entering into the greige/gray realm. Things to consider when choosing exterior paint colors

Keep these seven considerations in mind when settling on your exterior house paint ideas.

1.

Landscaping

If you are active in your yard and have a variety of decorative plants, consider how your house’s color will look with the yard. If you like bright, bold colors, will they contrast with your yard in the spring and summer months?

2. Neighbors

Though your immediate neighbors shouldn’t dictate what color you choose for your home, you should keep them in mind. If you plan to sell your home one day, you don’t want your home to stand out for all of the wrong reasons. A color that stands out, but that also complements the homes beside yours, will make your home seem more harmonious with your neighborhood. It’s also a good idea to check with your Homeowners Association as they could have rules about which colors you can paint your house.

3. Your home’s materials

If your home has either brick or stone anywhere on the exterior, you’ll want to choose colors that don’t conflict with your home’s natural exterior color schemes. Both brick and stone can have colors that stand out all by themselves, so any color you choose to go beside them needs to complement those materials.

4. Your roof

Whether you have a tin roof or a shingled roof, your home’s exterior color needs to be harmonious with your roof’s color. You don’t need to match the roof color with whatever color you’re choosing to paint your exterior – but they do need to complement one another. A good rule of thumb is to pair warm siding colors with warm roof colors and cool siding colors with cool roof colors.

5. The size of your home

If you want your home to appear bigger, a lighter, pastel color will ‘trick’ the eye and make it appear bigger. If you’re worried homebuyers will discount your home because of its size, go with a lighter shade.

6. Paint longevity

If it’s not in your budget to paint your home every five years then you’ll want to steer away from brighter colors, as these colors are known to fade quickly over time.

7. Resale value

If the plan is to sell in a few years, you don’t want to pick a color that will scare away potential buyers. Your bright purple may seem perfect to you, but to other people it might seem like a giant headache.

Frequently asked questions

What are the trending exterior house colors?

The following colors are sweeping across the nation right now:

  • Gray/green
  • Taupe
  • Light gray
  • Gray/blue
  • Sage green
  • Shades of blue
  • Brown
  • Burgundy

How do I choose an exterior paint color?

You should always choose a color that excites you and comforts you. Not only should your home feel welcoming to friends and family, but it should feel the same for you. Choose a color that embodies what a home should be to you.

However, if you plan on selling your home in the near future, go with a more neutral color. Though you may find the perfect buyer if you go with a bright color, the selling process will likely be more difficult.

What colors fade the fastest?

Bright colors are more susceptible to fading because of the effect UV radiation has on them. Bright yellows, blues, or reds will fade more quickly compared to muted colors.

What colors make a home appear bigger?

If your home is on the smaller side, a lighter color will make it appear bigger. Think impressionist, pastel colors such as off-gray, milky white, and beige.

15+ Popular Wall Paint Colours for Your Indian Home (Pick These Blindly!) – The Urban Guide

8 min read

A lot of people write in on social media to ask what colour they should paint their walls. While we do suggest wall paint colours on the basis of their indoor space, style and existing decor, we also feel that it’s similar to wanting to know what one should eat for lunch that particular day. Because there are just too many options! And the selection boils down to your personality, preferences and the outcome you want. Right?

So, we’ve decided to tackle this question through a couple of blog posts like these:

  • Most popular wall paint colours for home.
  • How to go about choosing house paint colors.
  • Paint color mistakes you should never make.
  • And so on and so forth.

To begin with, in this post, we’ll show you some of the most popular interior paint colours for various corners of your home — these make for safe bets.

Wall Paint Colours for Living Rooms

Interior Design by Urban Company Professional Spaced Out

Dark paint shades give the living room a classy, intimate and luxurious appeal. For instance, dark purple or even fig is a rich and classic wall colour for a semi-formal or formal living room. In the above room, along with the painted wall, the drapes and chairs are in hues of the colour fig. Tables in dark wood add depth to the room, while the white ceiling gives it breathing space.

Interior Design by Urban Company Professional Zero9

Similarly, dark shades of blue have become very popular paint colours for homes lately. Indigos, navys and ink blues are modern options that easily add a royal touch to your space.

Red is another great pick. Being a colour of energy, its darker shades are great for living rooms where you want to stimulate conversations. In this room, the red panelled accent wall pairs beautifully with the wooden flooring, rounded off with sofas in similar warm hues.

Interior Design by Urban Company Professional Mystique Interiors

If you want to add a soft, soothing and easy-on-the-eye colour to your living room walls, by all means go for pastels like powder blues, lavenders, lilacs, mint green, etc. But just so that the room doesn’t end up looking like a baby’s nursery, decorate with stylish metallic accents, tables with glass tops, contemporary wooden furniture, and tufted and woven furnishings.

Wall Paint Colours for Bedrooms

Light blues are the most comforting and relaxing wall colours for a master bedroom. This powder blue especially hugs you, just like it would in a child’s room. The tufted grey headboard and light bordered frames are perfect accompaniments.

Lovely light shades of purple, like the heather purple used in this bedroom, also gives off relaxed yet luxurious vibes. The luxe appeal is brought in by a gorgeous golden sunburst mirror.

A subtle yellow is cheerful and pleasing, and yet not too eye-catching. Paired with a plain bedding in blue and minimal artwork, it maintains the serene appeal of the bedroom.

Wall Paint Colours for Dining Rooms

Interior Design by Urban Company Professional Furdo

Yellow is one of the best wall paint colours for a dining room. It’s a happy colour signifying togetherness, a purpose meant to be served by a dining room as well.

You could opt for this warm mustard shade, which suits Indian decor aesthetics, and which looks beautiful in a room with abundant natural light.

Speaking of warm hues, a dusty shade of orange is a good interior paint colour too. Avoid pop or bright variants that are difficult to work with, and instead pick paint shades with grey undertones.

However, the latest wall paint colour trend to have hit dining rooms these days is that of pastel blues. While blue used to be once considered cold for such a room, it no longer is as it can be warmed up with wooden furniture and flooring or accents in natural materials.

Wall Paint Colours for Entryways

Colours for the entryway can either be a complementing backdrop for the accents that decorate it or can be welcoming all by themselves. Let’s see how. In the above picture, a dash of cool grey allows the contrasting dark shoe cabinet and the raised snake plant to shine. While in the picture below, a gorgeous blue looks so lovely in itself that it makes coming home every day a delight.

Wall Paint Colours for Reading Corners

Image: Courtesy Urban Ladder

You can either choose a dark colour, like this crimson, which will give your little corner a tucked away appeal — especially if that’s how you want to feel when reading that gripping novel. Or you can go for a wall colour design where a broad strip of a bright pop shade, like an orange or green, gets highlighted against a neutral background. This palette makes your reading corner look inviting — and turns it into your happy place!

So as you can see, different areas and rooms of your home work in different ways with various colours. You just need to know the mood and personality you want to obtain. But since that decision too can be nerve-wracking, we hope that the above safe colour choices are a helpful guide.

Quick FAQs

Before we end this post, we’re quickly tackling a couple of questions some of you sent in.

What is best paint color for the living room?
There are many and it all boils down to personal choices. But here are some of the best paint colours for the living room.

What colors make a living room look bigger?
According to the tried-and-tested rules of interior design, lighter colours like lavenders, powder blues, greys and soft pinks reflect and optimise natural light, thus, making the room appear airier. Bright colours in your living room will make it seem larger than it is. Keep the ceiling white or off-white for best results. Dark colours, on the other hand, absorb light and make the room look closed in.

What type of paint should be used in the living room?
Eggshell is a good choice of wall paint for common areas like the living room, where not too many people (especially little kids!) are likely to touch the walls. You can also opt for satin, which is slightly glossier than eggshell, and with a satin-like texture. This type can hold up to cleaning and light scrubbing. Hence, it can be used for high traffic areas like the living room.

Best & Popular Living Room Paint Colors of 2021 You Should Know

Choosing your living room paint colors is a big deal. When finding the best color for your living room, you have to remember this is a space you’ll entertain guests, come back after work to relax, and most likely, you’ll spend plenty of time in your living room. Of course, you’re looking for a color scheme eye-catching but calming at the same time. Maybe this is why more than one homeowner is shocked to see which shade won the best color for living room walls in 2021.

Modern Grays & Whites

Surprise! According to many interior designers, white is the most famous living room color of the year. Even though white walls have been dull and boring in the past, it seems this year is all about serenity and calmness.

Popular Living Room Whites & Grays to Consider:

  • Sherwin Williams Modern Gray
  • Benjamin Moore Gray Cashmere
  • Pratt and Lambert Noble Grey
  • Sherwin Williams Shoji White
  • Sherwin Williams Alabaster
  • Benjamin Moore Collingwood
  • Sherwin Williams Repose Gray
  • Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray
  • Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter
  • Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray
  • Benjamin Moore Moonshine

Because white is versatile, it can match a wide range of furniture styles and design aesthetics. So, even if your interior design taste changes over time, you don’t have to worry about re-painting your walls.

White is a very giving color that you can make warmer if you choose yellow lighting. You can also stay within a more controlled living room color scheme when you match it with white lighting and monochromatic accessories.

It’s the perfect living room paint color for those unsure about the final style they want for their home.

Modern grays will be a top paint color idea this year to get the trendy elegant modern look. Modern gray colors will be tricking everyone into thinking you have white walls when you know there’s something else. It’s a more modern look that steps away from the traditional solid whites.

Soft Muted Neutrals

Neutrals never go out of style, but in 2021, we’re moving past the gray and beige. Some of the best colors for living rooms this year include hazelnut, mint green, mushroom, and golden yellow.

Neutral Shades to Try:

  • Benjamin Moore Potters Clay
  • Sherwin Williams They Call It Mellow
  • Farrow & Ball Old White No. 4

Neutral shades are perfect for those who want a continuous color for the entire house. The furniture options are also quite endless with neutrals, but they add a more cozy feeling than an all-white home.

Warmer neutral tones are excellent choices for modern farmhouse styles, while colder tones lend themselves for a mid-century modern interior design aesthetic instead.

Sharp Blacks

Homeowners and designers alike are not shying away from darker colors. We see home designs with charcoal-colored ceilings, for example. A trending living room paint color, according to Benjamin Moore, will be Blue Danube, and we’re sure we’ll see many accent walls with dark blue shades for living rooms.

Dark Living Room Paint Colors to Try:

  • Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black
  • Sherwin Williams Naval
  • Sherwin Williams Jasper
  • Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze
  • Benjamin Moore Silhouette
  • Benjamin Moore Amazon Soil

Like our classic neutral colors, darker shades go well with creams and yellows for a warmer feel and greys and whites for that frostbite look. Homeowners are becoming more daring with their living room paint choices. While years ago, a black, dark wall was unthinkable, the rise of new styles like industrial design is helping people be more creative.

Blacks, dark blues, or greens can be excellent living room accent wall colors that modernize the space.

Earthy Pinks & Rich Reds

We’re about to see an explosion of blush tones in our living rooms. Light lavenders, blushing pinks, soft creams, and more are making a comeback. A refreshing alternative to your classic whites or beige, these soft, airy tones flatter all spaces and play well with other colors.

Our Favorite Pinks and Red Living Room Paint Ideas:

  • Farrow & Ball Preference Red
  • Farrow & Ball Dead Salmon
  • Sherwin Williams Canyon Clay
  • Sherwin Williams Antiquarian Brown
  • Benjamin Moore Rosy Peach
  • Benjamin Moore Potters Clay

Another excellent option for those who want a monochromatic paint color scheme that works in every room. We see blushing tones exploding in boho-style homes, modern glam, and modern-traditional living rooms.

Soft Greens

While this year’s living room paint ideas are bold and daring, we also have options for those looking for a muted look. A bit of green can go a long way in a living room, especially now that we’re spending so much time indoors.

Soft Greens to Consider:

  • Farrow & Ball Sap Green
  • Sherwin Williams Oakmoss
  • Sherwin Williams Rosemary

Olive green is perfect for anyone who’s ready to embrace a stronger color. It’s ideal for those with a mid-century living room that still want to have a nature-inspired feel to the home. Green colors evoke calmness and serenity, two feelings we all very much like to have in our living room space. Green will always be a great living room accent wall color to add a touch of color this year.

Soothing and Calming Blues

Blues are timeless, adaptable, and always soothing to see. They’re also a great option to bring a pop of color to your living room this year—eye-catching shades of blues, from the softest blues to the most daring ones.

Our Favorite Blues to Try:

  • Benjamin Moore Aegean Teal
  • Farrow & Ball Stiffkey Blue
  • Sherwin Williams Commodore
  • Sherwin Williams Wishful Blue
  • Sherin Williams Great Falls

These colors make a statement while still exuding an utmost feeling of comfortable elegance. A soothing shade of blue can instantly transport you to another place. It’s as if you’re on a plane. Which, in today’s environment, we need to feel relaxed.

But, we also want to feel excited and surprised. The living room design takes cues from traditional boutique hotels, and living room walls are rocking moodier hues of blues.

How to choose the paint for the walls in the apartment: which one will stick better

Acrylic, silicone, latex or water-based – we suggest what paint is best for painting walls in different rooms.

When choosing paint for walls in an apartment, it is important to pay attention not only to the color, but, first of all, to the composition, as well as performance. Let’s deal with each parameter in more detail.

What else to consider

It is impossible to say unequivocally which wall paint is better, because there is no single rating. The choice depends on the budget and the type of room to be painted.

All materials can be divided into three groups: outdoor, indoor and universal, which can be used in both cases. It is logical that two of the three types are suitable for interior repairs: specialized colors and universal ones. Why you should not use materials intended for the street?

The fact is that the coating for facade work may contain toxic antiseptics, hardeners – substances that cause irritation and even allergic reactions in a closed, unventilated space. Only garage walls are suitable for painting in this way.

Pexels

Paints and varnishes intended for interior work in a house or apartment are of two types: based on water and other solvents.

  • Finishing materials

What is anti-vandal paint and what are its benefits

Water soluble

They are also called water dispersion, water emulsion – the difference is in the constituent components. They are popular because of their price and practicality: they dry quickly, are well tinted, do not smell, and fit perfectly on almost any surface.

At the same time, the cheapest, but not stable emulsion is based on PVA. It gets dirty easily and is exposed to moisture. The walls are not covered with it, the maximum is the ceiling in a room with a non-aggressive environment, for example, in the living room or in the bedroom.

Acrylic

This paint contains aqueous dispersions of acrylic resins. After application, they form a thin protective film that is resistant to moisture and mechanical stress. This coating is suitable even for rooms with high humidity.

By the way, acrylic-based water-dispersion works well on both wooden and concrete surfaces. The only “but”: if there are small irregularities, it is first recommended to putty, for more serious defects, you first need to properly plaster.

Pexels

Acrylic is most commonly sold in stores as a white base. To get the desired shade, you need to add color – a color pigment. You can even do this at home on your own. So that the result does not disappoint you, there is no problem of incompatible components, take the color paste of the same company as the base.

Latex

These are aqueous emulsions based on latex copolymers to which rubber has been added. Which paint is better for the walls in the apartment: acrylic or latex? Depends on goals. The latter are even more durable, water resistant, but also more expensive.

Latex emulsion is often used to decorate rooms with high humidity. In addition, it is recommended to apply it on wallpaper for painting and use it to create decor from plaster, for example, imitation of a brick wall. A thin layer, which is formed after application, retains the texture of the surface, while additionally protecting it from water and moisture.

Like acrylics, latex coatings are mixed with color to achieve the desired shade.

Silicone

This silicone resin emulsion is one of the new products on the construction market. It is suitable not only for finishing walls inside, but also for decorating the facade of a building, it has good resistance to mechanical damage, to ultraviolet radiation, heat resistance and antiseptic properties. The only significant disadvantage is its high price.

However, such emulsions are rare in pure form. Most manufacturers offer acrylic-silicone mixtures.

Pexels

  • Hiding power – the ability to paint over the color of the surface. The higher this indicator, the fewer layers are needed to create a uniform tone. The hiding power of cheap colors is lower, this should be taken into account when buying, you will need more cans.
  • Vapor permeability – the ability to “breathe”. This indicator is important for rooms with high humidity. Vapor-permeable paints conduct moisture and protect against mold and mildew.
  • Resistance to abrasion, that is, mechanical damage, is an indicator of durability. It is determined in the laboratory, simulating the washing procedure.

How to choose paint for walls in the kitchen and bathroom

As you know, the most aggressive environment in the apartment is in the kitchen. There is high humidity and temperature, splashes of water and grease. Not every coating will withstand this. Appropriate materials are needed: waterproof, vapor-permeable, with good abrasion performance. Such requests are met by latex and silicone emulsions.

The same goes for the bathrooms, where humidity is combined with steam and heat.

Unsplash

For bedroom and living room

A quieter environment in the bedroom and living room does not require hardwearing or waterproofing. Acrylic paint will help to avoid financial costs. Choose products that have a wet cleaning mark on their packaging so that you can periodically wipe down the surface.

Pexels

Decorating a nursery

The most important thing here is safety. When choosing, you need to pay attention to the mark on the environmental friendliness of the material and its hypoallergenicity. Most manufacturers offer special products for children.

Is a small child trying to paint a room? Choose a color that can be washed, resistant to mechanical stress. For example, acrylic emulsion.

Pexels

Often it is in the nursery that you want to create an accent: a fabulous pattern or a textured finish. And you can even do it yourself. And with an older child, the lesson can turn into an exciting game. What colors to paint on the wall? The best option is acrylic. The advantages are obvious: a palette of colors, no smell and ease of application.

  • Matte, not shiny. Ideally hides surface imperfections. Suitable for low traffic areas such as bedrooms. The deep matte emulsion is also gaining popularity, it is especially relevant in the interior in a modern style.
  • Semi-matt has a subtle sheen. It has slightly higher indicators of wear resistance and durability, such surfaces can often be washed. Suitable for covering the hallway, corridor.
  • Semi-gloss is designed to decorate a nursery, kitchen, bathroom – rooms that will have to be washed frequently. She has good indicators of strength, resistance to dirt and wear.
  • Glossy gives a sheen almost like glass. It is the most wear resistant paint. But working with it is difficult: the surface must be perfect, because gloss can emphasize even the smallest roughness and unevenness. By the way, in this way you can arrange an accent wall.

The right choice will help to reduce material consumption: be sure to level the surface, use a primer and a medium pile roller.

How to choose a wall paint color and not make a mistake: 8 important tips and expert opinion

If you can’t decide on a color for your bedroom, kitchen or living room, try making an inspiration board. Get a folder on your computer or print out your favorite interior options. When enough has accumulated, see what they have in common? What color scheme, style?

Unsplash

Designers unanimously urge not to be afraid of bright colors. However, let’s be honest: the majority still prefers a neutral base. Want to try out the brighter options? Start with an accent or small rooms. By the way, most likely a successful experiment will be a bathroom. A neutral white bathroom and sink will stand up to any color.

It is also desirable to choose harmonious colors in adjoining rooms. Especially if they are visible in the aisle. So the feeling of a sharp transition will not be created, in addition, the space will appear visually larger.

Unsplash

Alas, not all colors look equally good in the store catalog and in reality at home. To see how the selected sample will behave, try painting a tester with it – a drywall square with a side of at least 50 cm. Place this piece in the light – next to the balcony, in the shade at the entrance, look at the change in shades.

Before buying, you need to decide which room you want to paint. For example:

  • if this is a bathroom, then you should pay attention to products that are not afraid of moisture;
  • if you need to paint the walls in the kitchen, then it is important to select wear-resistant materials that can be washed without problems;
  • if this is a guest room or a bedroom, then environmental friendliness and harmlessness are important. Opt for materials that don’t have a strong odor and dry quickly.

Pay attention to the condition of your walls before processing. Matte paintwork material, for example, with a silk effect, can hide imperfections like wallpaper, but glossy compositions require an ideal surface, since defects are very visible on it.

There are such types of products on the market as facade and interior. For the walls of the apartment you need interior material. Depending on the room, you need to decide whether to buy a moisture-resistant material or a regular one. For bathrooms or rooms with high humidity, it is better to purchase a moisture resistant one.

Another important point is how much time you spend in the room. If there is quite a lot, then pay attention to vapor permeability – an element on which the breathing effect of the room depends. We recommend choosing a vapor-permeable material.

When buying, make sure that the can says “for walls”. Interior paints should not stain your clothes when touched and should be easy to clean or wash. When buying ordinary or facade products, difficulties may arise. Below we will look at what products you can purchase on the market, their pros and cons.

Water-based paints

This is a material that consists of polyvinyl acetate, or, in other words, PVA. The material is quite inexpensive and readily available. The emulsion is easy to apply and does not need to be applied in many layers, usually just two is enough. Of the advantages of such a material, it can be noted that it can be used to paint rooms such as, for example, a bedroom and a nursery. Water-based products have good vapor permeability, and the wall, as they say, “breathes”. In addition, the color gamut of such material is very wide and will suit the taste of almost any person.

Among the shortcomings of water emulsion, we note that it is easy to scratch. Such material requires careful preparation of the surface before painting, since all the flaws are clearly visible on it. In addition, a wall painted with a water-based emulsion will need to be protected from children, as it is afraid of aggressive detergents, so it will be very difficult, or even impossible, to wash it.

Water dispersion compositions

Products can be created on the basis of PVA, acrylic resins or silicone. This type is suitable for dry rooms and is easy to clean.

Acrylic water-dispersion paints have many advantages. They are easy to apply, perfectly tinted and do not lose their original appearance over the years. In addition, a wall painted with such paint is more resistant to mechanical stress. With an acrylic mixture of this type, you can paint not only the walls, but also the ceiling. In terms of vapor permeability, the material is slightly inferior to water-based emulsion, although it still has a good result. Of the pluses, I would also like to note that acrylic products have a large selection of colors, for every taste.

Silicone water-dispersion products boast just as many advantages. They are easy to apply, do not fade, are not afraid of moisture and water and are not easily damaged. In addition, they are able to tighten cracks up to 2 mm, which greatly simplifies the preparatory work. Also, the walls covered with silicone products can be washed as much as you like, even with detergents. Thanks to its UV resistance, it can also be used outdoors. Among the shortcomings of silicone water-emulsion products, we note its high cost. It is currently the most expensive type on the market. But if you want high-quality and unusual wall decoration, then this is the most suitable option.

Decorative paints

They give the owner an unusual look of the apartment. Often, when painting walls, people achieve perfectly smooth surfaces, but decorative compositions make the surface completely different. With the help of textured products, you can get mother-of-pearl stains, fabric imitation, various chaotic reliefs and much more. The basis for the paintwork material is an acrylic dispersion with various additives such as sand, mineral fibers or other substances.

Texture compositions differ in density. Therefore, they can be applied both with a roller and with a brush or even with a spray gun. Can be applied to almost any kind of surface. Before use, it is desirable to prime the surface.

Alkyd mixtures

Alkyd mixtures are similar in consistency to oils, but contain alkyd resins. Among the advantages of the products are the tolerance of humidity, ultraviolet rays, elevated temperatures. Usually people buy formulations because of the low cost.

There are three types of this material:

  1. Matt.
  2. Glossy.
  3. Semi-gloss.

For application it is necessary to prepare the surface well, because imperfections will be seriously visible on a bad wall. However, alkyd paints have some disadvantages that make you wonder if it is worth covering the walls in the apartment with them. Firstly, when painting, a strong unpleasant odor will be released, since the composition is diluted with a solvent. Secondly, over time, it loses color, and is not particularly durable. Therefore, it is not recommended to paint walls with alkyd products.

Latex products

Among the advantages of this paint is moisture resistance, ease of application to walls and excellent wear resistance. Such materials are used only for interior work, as it is vulnerable to ultraviolet radiation. The paint hides small cracks and bumps well. Often such material is used by schools, kindergartens or medical institutions.

It should be noted that one of the disadvantages of such a material is that the room will not have a breathing effect, since the material cannot boast of good vapor permeability. Therefore, for a living room – this is not a very good option.

Silicate paints

Silicate paints are a common material for finishing walls and house facades. As part of this paint, the main component is liquid glass, with the addition of various additives. Before applying the paint, the surface should be well prepared – since this material cannot be applied to other types of paints, for example, over emulsion. This paint is perfect for the bathroom, as it is not afraid of fungus or mold. The walls covered with such material are strong and durable, the service life is about 15-20 years.

Silicate paints boast the following characteristics:

  • ease of preparation. If you have the necessary skills and desire, then all the robots can be done by yourself;
  • UV resistance;
  • good vapor permeability – this means that a room painted with such paint will have a breathable effect;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • this material is fire resistant.

Among the disadvantages of silicate paint is that it should only be applied in protective clothing using a respirator. Until completely dry, the paint is very unhealthy and it is impossible to stay indoors at that time. After drying, the material is harmless. Also, if you make repairs every four to five years, then the option is not very suitable, since it will be problematic to remove such paint, and it will not work to paint over it. But if you rarely make repairs, then this is an ideal option that will give the room an unsurpassed look.

Acrylic silicone paints

Acrylic silicone paints are ideal for wet areas. In kitchens, bathrooms or bathrooms, this type of paint will look great. In addition to the acrylic dispersion, the composition contains an emulsified silicone resin, due to which a strong, vapor-permeable film is formed. In addition, acrylic-silicone paint can be washed without problems.

Which paint is better to paint the walls in the bathroom

If you do not want to use tiles for bathroom renovation, then the right paint is perfect for you. The main selection criteria should be:

  • moisture resistant;
  • antibacterial protection;
  • resistance to mechanical stress.

One of the most common bathroom materials is water-dispersion paint – latex and acrylic. Such materials are notable for good moisture-resistant protection and average cost. Before buying such a paint, pay attention to whether it contains fungicides and algicides that will prevent the appearance or spread of the fungus. Among the advantages of water-dispersion paint is that it is non-toxic, due to the fact that water serves as a solvent. It dries from 1.5 to 2 hours, and in the summer even faster.

Tip! In order for the paint to serve for a long time and not crack, it must be applied to a completely dry surface.

Very often people use oil paints to paint bathroom walls. They are not afraid of moisture and resistant to damage. In addition, such paints attract people with low cost. But before buying, pay attention to the cons, because the painted surface dries for a long time and has a pungent odor.

What color to paint kitchen walls

When choosing a material for painting the kitchen, it should be taken into account that the paint must be vapor-resistant and easy to clean. Glossy paints work better than matte or rough paints, because dirt clogs into matte surfaces and is not easy to clean. Also, if the kitchen is small, then the gloss will visually expand the room. Of the minuses of such paints is that they require high-quality preparatory work and a perfectly flat surface.

Water-dispersion paints are ideal for the kitchen. Latex, acrylic and silicone types of such paints will do their job perfectly. But PVA-based paints cannot be used, as they are not moisture resistant and are used only in dry rooms.

Important! The most suitable materials for painting the kitchen are latex or silicone. They are quite durable and have a film that protects the walls from abrasion.

Conclusion

Now you know what paint to choose for the walls. As we saw from this article, the choice for painting the walls of your apartment is huge. In addition, there are many materials with which you can make repairs on your own. Before buying, decide what exactly needs to be painted and carefully inspect the material you have chosen. Many types of paint are afraid of the cold, so it should not be frozen. You should take care of your health, so pay attention to paints with good vapor permeability and wear resistance. We are confident that you will be able to make your home really beautiful and cozy!

How to paint a wooden house inside

Painting options

  1. Environmentally friendly
  2. Painting walls and ceilings with acrylic lacquers
  3. Acrylic lacquers with translucent primer
  4. Wood waxing
  5. Painting with interior acrylic paint

How to paint?

After building and painting the wooden house outside, the next question is the choice of materials for painting the wooden house inside. What to choose: water-based acrylic lacquer, acrylic interior wood paint or wood wax?

Environmental safety

One of the main requirements for interior painting materials is high environmental safety for people living in the house. All TEKNOS materials for painting walls and ceilings inside a wooden house are water-borne, odorless, solvent-free, and comply with the highest M1 environmental safety class.

We offer you to get acquainted with the possible options for painting a wooden house inside with acrylic varnishes, acrylic paints and TEKNOS wood wax (TEKNOS).

OPTION 1. Painting walls and ceilings with acrylic lacquers for interior use.

This type of interior painting of a wooden house is the most traditional. Acrylic semi-gloss varnish PANELILAKKA can serve as a budget option for painting walls and ceilings. If you wish to obtain a lacquer finish with varying degrees of surface gloss, you can use NATURA 15 acrylic matt lacquer or NATURA 40 acrylic semi-gloss lacquer. Acrylic lacquer can be applied by brush or spray.

A colorless acrylic lacquer is applied to preserve the natural color of the wood. Tinted colored acrylic varnish is applied for glazing color painting of walls and ceilings. The disadvantage of tinted lacquer when painting a wooden house inside is some “turbidity” of the lacquer coating and the difficulty of uniformly applying tinted lacquer when painting walls and ceilings, which causes the effect of “camouflage” or uneven tone of the painted surface.

OPTION 2. Painting walls and ceilings with acrylic lacquers for interior use using glazing primer (mordant).

In order to ensure the highest possible quality of painting a wooden house inside with acrylic varnishes, it is recommended to pre-apply tinted water glazing primer (water stain for wood) AQUA PRIMER 2920-02. After the AQUA PRIMER 2920-02 glazing primer has dried, two layers of colorless acrylic lacquer are applied over it: PANELILAKKA or NATURA 15 and NATURA 40. If necessary, a light sanding is performed between the first and second lacquer layer. This variant of lacquer painting provides high transparency and uniformity of glazing painting of wall and ceiling surfaces. Color map for glazing primer AQUA PRIMER 2900-02 includes more than 120 colors.

OPTION 3. Painting walls and ceilings with wood wax.

For high-quality and beautiful painting of a wooden house inside, it is recommended to apply 2 layers of colorless or tinted wood interior wax. Tinted wax gives the most beautiful glazing effect to the interior surfaces of a wooden house. Wax does not form a continuous film, and as indicated in the data sheet for SATU WAHA (Satu Sauna Waha) wood wax, the treated wood retains its breathability. Wood wax is recommended to be applied with a synthetic brush or by spraying if you have professional experience.
TEKNOS concern offers the following wood waxes for painting a wooden house: SATU VAHA, HIRSIVAHA and TEKNOVAKS 1160-00.

Waxes (oil-wax) for wood have gained the greatest demand for the glazing coloring of a wooden house inside. The popularity of wax is due to many factors and, above all, the pleasant appearance of the treated surfaces. is the best choice for painting a wooden house inside. SATU WAHA wood wax contains natural wax, belongs to the highest class of environmental safety M1, does not emit harmful substances and does not cause allergic reactions, it is safe for direct contact with the human body. Wax for wood SATU VAHA has high performance properties, perfectly withstands the effects of water and high temperatures, cleaning with detergents.

SATU WAHA wood wax is ideal for painting the inside of log cabins, solid wood houses, profiled and glued timber, as well as for painting lining boards or timber imitators. SATU WAHA wood wax has an economical consumption, which makes this option for painting a wooden house inside economically attractive. Samples of wood wax tinting are presented in the trading floors of the TEKNOS branded stores of the TEKNOVIKS company.

Helpful advice. Antiseptic for interior work
Before painting walls and ceilings inside a wooden house with acrylic lacquers or wood wax, the wood can be pre-treated with an aqueous priming antiseptic WOODEX AQUA BASE. The use of WOODEX AQUA BASE is optional. However, according to Finnish experts and feedback from our customers, priming reduces the risk of biological damage to wood, and more importantly, the application of acrylic varnishes for interior work and wood wax on wood treated with WOODEX AQUA BASE provides a more beautiful and uniform glazing painting of walls and ceilings.

OPTION 4. Painting walls and ceilings with interior acrylic paint.

To paint the walls and ceilings of a wooden house inside, water-based interior acrylic paints can be used, which form a colored opaque coating. Interior acrylic paints for interior work are traditionally used for drywall, plastered surfaces and for painting wallpaper. Interior paints TEKNOS (TEKNOS) are odorless, do not contain solvents, have the property of hypoallergenicity, that is, they do not cause allergic reactions. BIORA acrylic paints are used for painting dry residential premises, and acrylic waterproof paints of the TIMANTTI series are used for interior painting of premises with high humidity.

The most popular materials for interior work are: TIMANTTI 7 matt paint and BIORA BALANCE deep matt paint.

On the recommendation of Finnish specialists, TIMANTTI acrylic paints can be used for painting wooden surfaces of walls and ceilings inside the house. Teknos interior acrylic paints are computer tinted according to various color charts and have thousands of possible options, which can be found in any of our Teknos brand stores.

How to repaint varnish. Wood restoration
Covering paint is an optimal restoration material, it does not require complete cleaning of the wood. Unlike glazing compositions, which mainly require fresh, unpainted wood for painting, covering paint will require a maximum of local sanding.

Painting surfaces in the apartment: everything you need to know.

Today, one of the most simple, affordable and aesthetic ways of interior decoration of an apartment is painting the walls. The high popularity of this type of finishing work is quite explainable by the use of new technologies, new coloring compositions, and, consequently, by the completely changed appearance of the painted walls. Coloring allows you to create an individual unique atmosphere and unsurpassed comfort in the house. The variety of wall paints and the possibilities of modern tinting, presented in modern color catalogs (TVT, RAL, NCS, etc.), allow you to choose the right shade and gloss level for any surface.

Nowadays, the choice of paint has become an interesting and exciting process of competent selection of shades for walls, ceilings and window frames. After all, a prerequisite for painting walls is the harmonious relationship of tones, midtones and shades. When preparing walls for painting, it is important to remember a few recommendations. Among the most important aspects that determine the choice of a particular type of paint is the evaluation of the color and the effect it produces.

In addition to color, it is also necessary to correctly determine the degree of gloss, since the perception of color largely depends on this characteristic. Matte and completely matte surfaces fill the interior with peace and harmony. Most often, paints with such characteristics are suitable for painting the walls of recreation rooms. The matte surface makes the color especially soft and elegant. When daylight hits a matte surface, it is softly diffused, making it possible to hide small imperfections of the substrate. Semi-gloss and semi-gloss paints are best used for painting the walls of rooms that are actively used throughout the day. Due to the presence of gloss, such surfaces seem more dynamic, and the color – “playing”. It should also be noted that, regardless of the degree of gloss of the paint, an important selection criterion is the resistance of the painted surface to washing with a damp cloth and the possibility of quick and easy repainting.

Walls for painting, preparation technology

The temperature of the room where the walls will be painted should be more than + 5 ° C, and the relative humidity of the air should be up to 80%. After plastering, the surface must dry completely. It should be noted that the drying time of various plasters can vary significantly and ranges from 3 days to 1 month, so it is necessary to wait for the plastered surface to dry completely.

If the plastering of the surface was carried out with coarse-grained plaster, then in order to give it maximum smoothness, the surface must be puttied. In addition, high-quality puttying of small and large cracks is required: first they should be “expanded”, giving a triangular profile, then primed and only then filled with putty. It should be noted that the oil-adhesive putty leads to discoloration of the water-based paint. In order to get the smoothest possible surface when painting the walls, we recommend using a finishing putty, which is easy to sand to perfect smoothness.

For best results, the paint must be applied to a flat, clean, dry and stable surface. Therefore, before painting, the surface is cleaned of the slightest traces of dust, dirt, soot, oil and grease stains, etc. Often, it is enough to wash the surface with water with detergents, but not abrasives.

If new plastered or puttied surfaces are to be painted, it is necessary to check whether they are chalked. To do this, before painting the walls, the surface is carried out by hand and in the case when there are traces of chalk on the hand, the surface is wiped with a damp cloth, then dried and primed with a universal primer.

It is enough to paint a durable surface that does not leave a grinding deposit on the hand with acrylic or water-based paint, which can first be diluted with water in a proportion of 5-10%. To apply the first (primer) layer on a cleaned or new surface, 1 part of water is added to 10 parts of paint. For the next layer, 1 part of water is added to 20 parts of paint.

No less important is how durable the surface of the walls to be painted is. All loose particles should be removed from it, especially if surfaces that are covered with old paint are to be painted. Numerous videos of painting walls and preparing them for work will answer many questions and allow you to overcome a lot of difficulties.

Re-painting the walls is also carried out in accordance with a number of rules. When repainting, you first need to make sure that there are no stains – traces of leaks, splashes of berry juice, ink, oil, grease, etc. Although it is difficult to clean such stains, they are unacceptable to leave. We recommend that you use special surface cleaners to remove dirt before painting it with Maalipesu.

wall painting technology

The easiest way to paint walls is to apply paint with a roller. It is best to use an ANZA rope roller for painting, which is the best at applying color and spreading paint over the surface of the wall. There are various rollers for doing this work: foam rubber, mohair or sheepskin, with short, medium and long pile. Roller selection is determined by the type of ink being used. A short-haired mohair roller makes it easy to apply the silky emulsion. Using a medium pile sheepskin roller, the surface is painted with matte emulsions. Since sponge foam rollers create bursting air bubbles on the paint film, which lead to cracking of the surface, it is better not to use such rollers for applying conventional acrylic and water-based paint.

To prepare the roller for painting the walls, it is necessary to pour a little paint into the bath, lower the roller into it and roll it along the ribbed bottom of the pallet, so that the paint is evenly distributed on the roller.

As a rule, the paint is applied in two layers, thoroughly mixed before use. The first coat of paint serves to prime the surface, and the second to fix the color.

When painting walls, masking tape is used to mark the boundaries of the area to be painted, which allows you to get a smooth painting line and not be afraid to paint over the excess. However, even when using masking tape, you need to paint slowly and carefully. When painting, special attention is paid to door and window frames, as well as ceiling surfaces that are adjacent to the walls. To treat areas inaccessible to the roller, use a brush or mini roller. Usually, with their help, 10-20 centimeter sections are painted from each of the corners of the room and other boundaries marked with masking tape. The paint layer should be even and thin.

Drying of acrylic water-based paint occurs within 2 hours after the walls are painted, and each layer must dry. If you paint on a wet layer, it will peel off the surface, nullifying the previous work.

wall painting

Painting walls begins with a surface with door or window openings. The paint is carefully applied to the surface of the wall, starting from the top of the wall, with the roller moving up and down to obtain a “W” pattern: rolling the roller is done from top to bottom, and then back and slightly obliquely, the last rolling movement of the roller should be from bottom to top .

Of course, this option is not the only one, and everyone decides for himself whether he will paint at an angle or straight. After finishing work and without waiting for the paint to dry, you need to carefully examine the small details of the room – door and window frames, ceiling or floor skirting boards. If any slips or smudges are noticeable, they must be immediately removed using the roller that was used to paint.

Wall paint confidently occupies a leading position in the market, gradually replacing the usual finishing material – wallpaper. The market responds to such demand with new color compositions, an expanded range and a wide price segment. Next, consider: what types of paints exist, how to paint the walls with your own hands and what kind of pigment suspension to choose for this.

Color boom: wall paint instead of wallpaper

Page navigation

It is difficult to imagine a stylish renovation in the house without the use of paints. Enamel, water-based or acrylic materials decorate the space with new colors, protect surfaces from the negative effects of the external environment, moisture and sunlight.

Variety of paints for painting the walls in the room

Among the wide range of products for indoor renovations, building experts distinguish two types of paints.

  1. Alkyd: oil, drying oil, semi-gloss, glossy, matt (gloss degree subtype), enamel, lacquer.
  2. Emulsion: polyvinyl acetate, acrylic, silicate and silicone.

Alkyd paints are colorants based on drying oil or alkyd resin. These components have a strong odor. Considered hazardous to human health. There are many disadvantages, but one advantage – excellent surface protection from moisture.

Emulsion coloring compositions are used for interior and exterior use. Unlike previous materials, they do not contain third-party odors, dry quickly and offer an unlimited number of shades, colors and combined compositions.

There are 4 main brands of drying oils with various properties and characteristics on the market: MA-021 (film-forming drying oils), MA-025 (combined), GF-023 (griftal), PF-024 (pentaphthalic drying oil).

How to paint the walls in the apartment

The walls in the apartment are painted with any of the above materials.

However, emulsion formulations that are odorless, harmless to animals and humans, dry in 10-20 minutes, are more popular, which is very convenient for combined coloring in several shades.

What kind of paint the walls are painted

A practical option for painting walls in a residential area is a water-based emulsion, which is cheaper than acrylic and polyvinyl acetate paint. However, the latter options are more resistant to moisture. Walls can be washed without worrying about color. Shades of acrylic materials allow you to choose the most appropriate option for a particular room.

When painting walls with alkyd paint, glyphthalic or pentaphthalic enamels should be preferred. The compositions are distinguished by a high degree of resistance to water and various types of abrasion.

How can walls be painted?

For walls in a basement or warehouse, more practical materials are selected – enamel compositions that do not allow moisture to pass through and are resistant to abrasion.

There are two drawbacks – the need to clean surfaces from old layers of enamel paint, as well as vulnerability to alkalis.

Walls in the bathroom, kitchen or hallway should be selected with silicone or acrylic paints. For the children’s room, bedroom and living room, the best choice is water-based and polyvinyl acetate paints, which allow you to paint the walls and ceiling in rich colors.

DIY wall painting: recommendations

Repair work, regardless of the type of premises and its size, is carried out in compliance with safety rules, which include:

  1. compulsory ventilation;
  2. use of a protective mask;
  3. ban on painting surfaces with enamel compounds in an unventilated area.

However, there are a number of application guidelines that everyone should follow:

  • for corners and raised surfaces use a brush with thick bristles;
  • for a flat surface in the center, use a roller with a thick but short pile;
  • it is necessary to sand all surfaces, regardless of the type of paint;
  • before painting, be sure to treat the putty wall with a primer, and only after drying, apply the coloring composition;
  • stain in one direction: side to side or up and down;
  • calculate the consumption and dilute the color in a large container so that all the walls have the same shade.

Polyvinyl acetate paint based on PVA is not used for painting metal surfaces and elements.

How many times the wall is painted

The color of the surface and its saturation depend not only on the type of coloring matter and its consistency, but also on the number of layers. For cosmetic painting in one tone, one layer will be enough.

But, if the wall is re-plastered, sanded and primed, it is better to use a double layer, after drying the first layer before applying the second. This will make the shade rich and deep, without visible translucent stripes.

The market offers a variety of finishes for walls and ceilings, both indoors and outdoors. However, as practice shows, wallpaper is increasingly being replaced by more practical and wear-resistant materials – paints. The interior space solution and the choice of coloring composition are largely determined by such qualities as practicality, price and service life.
