Let me just start by saying that I’m a strong advocate for using different paint colors in different rooms of your home. Paint is one of the best and easiest ways to add personality to a space, and bring together the design elements in a room. However, there is always going to be a need for that perfect, neutral base color that ties together the hallways and other main areas of the house with surrounding rooms. Or, perhaps you’ve got a rental property, and just want to paint every room in the house a neutral shade that will work with any style and appeal to tenants. So, what are the best paint colors for the whole house? I’ve complied a list of 20 go-to, neutral shades that designers swear by, and should be at the top of your list of colors to try for your house color palette.

White walls are making a comeback in a big way right now, and are very much on-trend this year. Pair soft white walls with contrasting black windows/doors, and lots of natural wood for a stunning and stylish room design. 1. Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee (OC-45)

2. Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace (OC-65)

3. Sherwin Williams Alabaster (SW 7008)

Alabaster was Sherwin-Williams’ 2016 Color of the Year, and there’s no doubt it has become a favorite white for designers. My girl Joanna Gaines used this color to paint the main areas of her own house, and it is one of her go-to whites for walls and shiplap. 4. Benjamin Moore Paper White (OC-55)

Paper White is a very pale gray that can actually look white in certain light. If you’re looking for a very pale gray, this is a great paint choice to lighten and brighten your space. Paper White leans toward the cool side, but has a nice softness to it. I love it paired with bright white trim, and it also tends to work well with Carrara marble in bathrooms and kitchens. Greige is just a blend of gray and beige. It can be the best of both worlds, appealing to those that like the look of gray, but aren’t sure about moving away from the more traditional feeling of beige. Probably the most beloved greige paint color out there, it’s no wonder designers love Revere Pewter. It has just the right mix of gray and beige to satisfy almost everyone, and it works with pretty much every style. This is a fantastic choice for open floor plans, and is a paint color I recommend often to my clients for the whole-house and/or main living areas. In well-lit spaces, Revere Pewter will give you the gray appearance you are looking for, but warm up nicely in the evenings to create a cozy feeling. 6. Sherwin Williams Colonnade Gray (SW 7641)

Colonnade Gray is another favorite, and happens to be the whole-house paint color we chose for our Colorado home. It is sometimes referred to as the Sherwin Williams version of Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter, and it’s true that they are very close in depth, warmth, and tone. So close, in fact, you could consider them twins. However, some report that Colonnade Gray is just a touch more neutral, in that it won’t take on any of the taupe or green undertones that are sometimes seen with Revere Pewter. Regardless, Colonnade Gray is another fantastic medium greige that works beautifully in all different lighting conditions, and with any design style. Balboa Mist is a beautiful light greige with a faint, hardly-noticeable purple undertone, and is one of Benjamin Moore’s most popular neutral colors. Things to consider when choosing exterior paint colors

Keep these seven considerations in mind when settling on your exterior house paint ideas.

Landscaping

If you are active in your yard and have a variety of decorative plants, consider how your house’s color will look with the yard. If you like bright, bold colors, will they contrast with your yard in the spring and summer months?

2. Neighbors

Though your immediate neighbors shouldn’t dictate what color you choose for your home, you should keep them in mind. If you plan to sell your home one day, you don’t want your home to stand out for all of the wrong reasons. A color that stands out, but that also complements the homes beside yours, will make your home seem more harmonious with your neighborhood. It’s also a good idea to check with your Homeowners Association as they could have rules about which colors you can paint your house.

3. Your home’s materials

If your home has either brick or stone anywhere on the exterior, you’ll want to choose colors that don’t conflict with your home’s natural exterior color schemes. Both brick and stone can have colors that stand out all by themselves, so any color you choose to go beside them needs to complement those materials.

4. Your roof

Whether you have a tin roof or a shingled roof, your home’s exterior color needs to be harmonious with your roof’s color. You don’t need to match the roof color with whatever color you’re choosing to paint your exterior – but they do need to complement one another. A good rule of thumb is to pair warm siding colors with warm roof colors and cool siding colors with cool roof colors.

5. The size of your home

If you want your home to appear bigger, a lighter, pastel color will ‘trick’ the eye and make it appear bigger. If you’re worried homebuyers will discount your home because of its size, go with a lighter shade.

6. Paint longevity

If it’s not in your budget to paint your home every five years then you’ll want to steer away from brighter colors, as these colors are known to fade quickly over time.

7. Resale value

If the plan is to sell in a few years, you don’t want to pick a color that will scare away potential buyers. Your bright purple may seem perfect to you, but to other people it might seem like a giant headache.

What colors make a living room look bigger?
According to the tried-and-tested rules of interior design, lighter colours like lavenders, powder blues, greys and soft pinks reflect and optimise natural light, thus, making the room appear airier. Bright colours in your living room will make it seem larger than it is. Keep the ceiling white or off-white for best results. Dark colours, on the other hand, absorb light and make the room look closed in.

What type of paint should be used in the living room?
Eggshell is a good choice of wall paint for common areas like the living room, where not too many people (especially little kids!) are likely to touch the walls. It is enough to paint a durable surface that does not leave a grinding deposit on the hand with acrylic or water-based paint, which can first be diluted with water in a proportion of 5-10%. To apply the first (primer) layer on a cleaned or new surface, 1 part of water is added to 10 parts of paint. For the next layer, 1 part of water is added to 20 parts of paint.

No less important is how durable the surface of the walls to be painted is. All loose particles should be removed from it, especially if surfaces that are covered with old paint are to be painted. Re-painting the walls is also carried out in accordance with a number of rules. When repainting, you first need to make sure that there are no stains – traces of leaks, splashes of berry juice, ink, oil, grease, etc. Although it is difficult to clean such stains, they are unacceptable to leave. However, even when using masking tape, you need to paint slowly and carefully. When painting, special attention is paid to door and window frames, as well as ceiling surfaces that are adjacent to the walls. To treat areas inaccessible to the roller, use a brush or mini roller. Usually, with their help, 10-20 centimeter sections are painted from each of the corners of the room and other boundaries marked with masking tape. The paint layer should be even and thin.

Drying of acrylic water-based paint occurs within 2 hours after the walls are painted, and each layer must dry. If you paint on a wet layer, it will peel off the surface, nullifying the previous work.

It is difficult to imagine a stylish renovation in the house without the use of paints. Enamel, water-based or acrylic materials decorate the space with new colors, protect surfaces from the negative effects of the external environment, moisture and sunlight.

Variety of paints for painting the walls in the room

Among the wide range of products for indoor renovations, building experts distinguish two types of paints.

Alkyd: oil, drying oil, semi-gloss, glossy, matt (gloss degree subtype), enamel, lacquer.
Emulsion: polyvinyl acetate, acrylic, silicate and silicone.

Alkyd paints are colorants based on drying oil or alkyd resin. These components have a strong odor. Considered hazardous to human health. There are many disadvantages, but one advantage – excellent surface protection from moisture.

Emulsion coloring compositions are used for interior and exterior use. Unlike previous materials, they do not contain third-party odors, dry quickly and offer an unlimited number of shades, colors and combined compositions.

There are 4 main brands of drying oils with various properties and characteristics on the market: MA-021 (film-forming drying oils), MA-025 (combined), GF-023 (griftal), PF-024 (pentaphthalic drying oil).

How to paint the walls in the apartment

The walls in the apartment are painted with any of the above materials.

However, emulsion formulations that are odorless, harmless to animals and humans, dry in 10-20 minutes, are more popular, which is very convenient for combined coloring in several shades.

What kind of paint the walls are painted

A practical option for painting walls in a residential area is a water-based emulsion, which is cheaper than acrylic and polyvinyl acetate paint. However, the latter options are more resistant to moisture. Walls can be washed without worrying about color. Shades of acrylic materials allow you to choose the most appropriate option for a particular room.

When painting walls with alkyd paint, glyphthalic or pentaphthalic enamels should be preferred. The compositions are distinguished by a high degree of resistance to water and various types of abrasion.

How can walls be painted?

For walls in a basement or warehouse, more practical materials are selected – enamel compositions that do not allow moisture to pass through and are resistant to abrasion.

There are two drawbacks – the need to clean surfaces from old layers of enamel paint, as well as vulnerability to alkalis.

Walls in the bathroom, kitchen or hallway should be selected with silicone or acrylic paints. For the children’s room, bedroom and living room, the best choice is water-based and polyvinyl acetate paints, which allow you to paint the walls and ceiling in rich colors.

DIY wall painting: recommendations

Repair work, regardless of the type of premises and its size, is carried out in compliance with safety rules, which include:

compulsory ventilation;
use of a protective mask;
ban on painting surfaces with enamel compounds in an unventilated area.

However, there are a number of application guidelines that everyone should follow:

for corners and raised surfaces use a brush with thick bristles;
for a flat surface in the center, use a roller with a thick but short pile;
it is necessary to sand all surfaces, regardless of the type of paint;
before painting, be sure to treat the putty wall with a primer, and only after drying, apply the coloring composition;
stain in one direction: side to side or up and down;
calculate the consumption and dilute the color in a large container so that all the walls have the same shade.

Polyvinyl acetate paint based on PVA is not used for painting metal surfaces and elements.

How many times the wall is painted

The color of the surface and its saturation depend not only on the type of coloring matter and its consistency, but also on the number of layers. For cosmetic painting in one tone, one layer will be enough.

But, if the wall is re-plastered, sanded and primed, it is better to use a double layer, after drying the first layer before applying the second. This will make the shade rich and deep, without visible translucent stripes.

The market offers a variety of finishes for walls and ceilings, both indoors and outdoors. However, as practice shows, wallpaper is increasingly being replaced by more practical and wear-resistant materials – paints. The interior space solution and the choice of coloring composition are largely determined by such qualities as practicality, price and service life.

The quality and durability of exterior painting of a house to a very large extent depends on the correct preparation of the wall surface. </p> <p> <b> The substrate to be painted must be solid, sound and primed. </b> </p> <h4> Preparation for painting old house walls </h4> <p> It is always necessary to improve the condition of the substrate before painting old house walls. </p> <p> Old wall must be free of dust, mould, moss and loose layers of old </strong> coatings before painting <strong> . To do this, it is best to wash the wall with a pressure washer, for example, an automobile one. Or you can wipe the entire surface of the wall with a stiff brush, but this option is more laborious. It is better to use both methods, after washing, brush only the places of intense pollution.<img loading='lazy' src='' /> </p> <p> <strong> Places of accumulation of mold, moss after their removal must be treated with a liquid bioprotective preparation. </strong> Otherwise, parts of these biological substances may remain in the thickness of the wall covering, which will quickly grow through the new paint. </p> <p> Then the plastered surfaces are repaired, cracks, places with peeling plaster are repaired. Old paint on the facade should not flake off and dust. Places with peeling paint are cleaned, primed and covered with an additional layer of new paint. </p> <p> If the old paint is damaged over a large area, it is better to remove it from the entire surface of the wall. It is convenient to use a sandblaster to remove old paint. </p> <h4> How to determine the surface strength of the wall to be painted? </h4> <p> To do this <b> stick a sufficiently large piece of transparent stationery tape </b> on the wall and tear it off the wall in a minute with a sharp movement. If, along with adhesive tape, pieces of the base did not come off the wall, then such a wall can be primed and painted.<img loading='lazy' src='' /> Otherwise, the wall surface should be cleaned by removing the old paint. </p> <h4> Preparation for painting the facade of a new house </h4> <p> <b> Plastered facades of new houses are quite durable. Preparing the facade for painting a new house outside comes down to the following steps: </b> </p> <ol> <li> It is imperative to dry the freshly plastered facade for at least 30-60 days. The wall must be completely dry. </li> <li> Apply a primer to the wall of the house. </li> </ol> <p> <b> Non-plastered facades made of sand-lime brick </b> can be coated with a special colorless protective compound, or simply painted with facade paint. In any case, the surface of the wall is primed. </p> <p> <b> Front ceramic bricks </b> are usually not painted. </p> <p> <b> New walls made of ordinary ceramic bricks </b> are best painted in the first two years, before efflorescence appears on them. </p> <h3> Priming of house walls outside </h3> <p> <b> The primer allows: </b> </p> <ul> <li> to strengthen the dusty base; </li> <li> increase the adhesion (adhesion) of the paint to the base; </li> <li> reduce the water absorption of the coating; </li> <li> to reduce the consumption of facade paint.<img loading='lazy' src='' /> </li> </ul> <p> Facade paint spreads more easily over the primed surface, and <b> its consumption is noticeably reduced </b> . </p> <p> It is best to apply <b> primer recommended by the manufacturer of exterior paint </b> selected for painting the exterior of the house. </p> <p> The quality of painting the facade of the house can be improved if the primer <b> is tinted to match </b>, which is close to the color of the facade paint. </p> <p> Sometimes facade paint diluted with water is used as a primer <b> </b> in a 1:1 ratio. </p> <p> The primer is applied to the wall surface in the same way as the paint. Before painting, the primer must be allowed to dry completely for at least a day. </p> <h3> How long does the paint dry? </h3> <p> Most exterior paints dry completely and provide a durable <b> finish 24 hours after </b> is applied to the wall. </p> <p> The second coat of paint can usually be applied before the first coat is completely dry. It is more convenient and faster to paint with a roller than with a brush, besides, less paint is consumed. </p> <p> When painting <b> textured walls </b> or directly on the brick, use a wide brush with long bristles. </p> <p> <b> The spray gun can be used to paint walls of any texture </b>, both smooth and embossed. Painting a house with an airbrush requires higher qualifications and experience from the performers with this paint sprayer. It is necessary to choose the correct viscosity of the paint, select the nozzles for the sprayer of the apparatus. It also requires a practical skill in uniformly applying paint to the surface of the wall.<img loading='lazy' src='' /> <b> It is better to entrust the painting of the house with an airbrush to specialists. </b> </p> <p> In the case of using special high viscosity textured paints <b> with </b> filler, in addition to the above tools, a spatula is also used to paint the facade. </p> <h3> Painting the outside of the house </h3> <p> Painting the outside of the house <b> can be done on your own </b> by following these guidelines: </p> <ol> <li> The work of painting the facade must be planned after reading the weather forecast. Paint stored under these conditions remains usable even after the expiration date printed on the packaging. </p> <p> If the paint has stratified during storage, mix it thoroughly with a mixer – an attachment for an electric drill, and the paint will become usable again. </p> <h3> What color to paint the facade of the house </h3> <p> When choosing the color of the walls of the facade <strong>, the following basic rules are followed: </strong> </p> <p> 1. The color of the walls of the facade of the house must differ from the color of the roof. </p> <p> 2. Only after the causes of damage have been eliminated can repair of the damage sites be started. </p> <p> Well-made decorative thin-layer plasters applied to thermal insulation usually do not require any repair for many years. </p> <p> Regular inspection of the façade and decontamination is the main means of its maintenance. </p> <p> Even small leaks, if left uncorrected for a long time, can eventually lead to significant damage not only to the paint layer, but also to the plaster layer. If you react quickly, it is enough to restore only the color. It is necessary to eliminate the cause of leaks, let the wall dry and repair. </p> <h3> Green algae on the facade – how to prevent and remove </h3> <p> Green algae on the wall always indicates high humidity, which promotes algae growth.<img loading='lazy' src='' /> </p> <p> Houses located near forests and parks, in areas with high humidity (near bodies of water), are particularly vulnerable to biological pollution. Only the northern and western walls are subject to green invasion. This is due to the fact that the winds from the west blow more often, and the rain falls on the walls from these directions, and the sun is less frequent in these places. Algae and fungus spores thrive on damp surfaces, and on the southern walls, the sun dries out the façade. </p> <p> Lightly contaminated walls can be disinfected with an antimicrobial agent and then rinsed with high pressure water. If traces of algae remain after disinfection, then it will be necessary to restore the color – paint the facade with paint with biocides. </p> <p> It should be remembered that the period of active work of most biocides is three to five years. After this time, in areas particularly prone to microbial contamination, the façades must be re-protected by spraying the preparation.
