Modern Houses UK & Contemporary House Desings in the UK

Welcome to your future where a modern home can now be designed just the way you like it! You have always been one step ahead of everyone else, are one of the famous early adopters, setting trends rather than just following them. With a modern house design created by Baufritz, your home will become a showcase for your personality. In a Baufritz-designer home, you can express your individuality.

There is a part of each of us that strives to be creative and why not be creative with your individually designed home from Baufritz? Creativity is the essence of our being. It gives us strength, energy and helps us overcome many problems we face. At Baufritz, we want to bring out your most creative streak where you can be the master of your work in designing your perfect modern home.

What is a modern house?

A modern house is a unique architectural highlight. Its main feature is its unusual looks, drawing up a new vision of living. Those who enjoy modern architecture extraordinaire will find an oasis of thrilling design vocabulary in these modern UK house designs. They overcome the conventional limits of house building and find spectacular solutions to manifold challenges.

The architecture of a modern contemporary home can borrow elements from a variety of different house types and interpret them in a new way or mix them up. Herein lies the fundamental difference to a prefabricated structure. En Vogue is very much the variation of a Bauhaus design, but also elements of the Chalet you might integrate into your project. Build your unique style.

Besides the artful architecture, modern style homes satisfy other ambitions. They will:

  • Master specific challenges of statics
  • Harmonise the exterior with the surroundings
  • Create functional (living)areas
  • Integrate innovative power technology
  • Offer healthy living

Modern house: Modern architecture for your home

Do you envisage unusual details for your house, such as a surrounding patio or an offset mono-pitched roof? By employing a modern house style, your home dreams become a reality. The Baufritz modern homes are planned individually by an architect, implementing your ideas and concepts. In the interior, these extremely exciting homes captivate with special details, such as glazing above the bathtub or sandstone floors.

Baufritz will always keep an eye on energy efficiency, functionality and healthy living in your architect designed house. Moreover, we find customised solutions for the special challenges your plot may create.

Healthy modern architecture homes: Building your dream home with certified materials

You will want to live a long and happy life in your exquisite modern home designed by an architect, perhaps bring up children, perhaps have pets. To ensure everyone’s wellbeing at all times, Baufritz puts its emphasis on healthy living. There are options as diverse as putting natural wood at the heart of your structure for a timber frame home or building a multi-family-residential masonry dwelling.

You will benefit from:

  • Materials certified free of harmful substances
  • Perceptibly healthy indoor air
  • Assessment of your plot
  • Electro-smog protection
  • Allergy-friendly construction
  • Healthy lighting

Can I employ renewable energy sources in a modern home?

Baufritz houses have a very special charm. Due to their inspired architecture, and also their innovative energy concepts. We will lower your energy consumption and CO2 using several different systems. The principle of energy-optimised living will from the start be respected in the planning process and tailored to your wishes, your plot and budget.

Let’s jointly construct a contemporary home that is a passive house or a solar house. Smaller interventions can also carry significant energy saving potential. We will advise you in detail about the possibilities of your architect designed house, always considering sustainability and economic efficiency.

Architect home with a flat roof for enhanced comfort

Clients choose a flat roof more frequently than ever, and many builder-owners who are planning a modern Contemporary home choose this option. This popular roof option may also be used on a bungalow or the car-port of a New England Style house. It serves as a roof terrace for relaxation or is used to harvest solar energy.

Feel the freedom to design your roof as you wish, staying true to your style. Whether a flat roof, solid wood roof, pent roof, hipped roof or another style altogether; we will implement your ideas, making your dream of a designed home in superior quality a reality.

Find expertise accumulated in our Baufritz documentation >

What costs to expect with an architect designed modern house?

Modern homes are in the upper price tier. They give your individuality freedom to unfold and interpret many elements of architecture anew. They require challenging professional planning by an architect who will implement unusual forms and interior design wishes. If you would like to build in another style, we recommend our modern prefabricated homes, such as town-house designs and country-house designs.

Use the support of our experts during planning. In a personal conversation, we will answer all questions and will advise you openly about the costs of your modern house.

Complete DIY Plans to Build the Home in the Film “Herself” Are Available for Free

Carpenters use the adage “measure twice, cut once” as a reminder to double-check before committing—and it’s uttered by a character in the new film Herself (2020) to a group of novice builders. But it’s also an apt metaphor for the entire journey of Sandra (played by Clare Dunne), a single mother in Dublin trying to solve her housing problem. The saying cautions her to plan and prepare—then take action.

Having left her violent husband, Sandra has to declare herself homeless to qualify for government assistance. She is put up in an airport hotel, where she has to use the “poor door” to access the room she shares with her two daughters while she waits for her number 653 to come up on the public housing list. (Due to a dearth of available housing stock, Dublin has become one of the most expensive cities in the world—pricier than Tokyo, Sydney, and Singapore. Pre-pandemic, the number of people without housing had quadrupled in five years.)

After Googling “Self-Build + Ireland + cheap,” she lands on irishvernacular.com, which offers free plans for a self-build home by architect Dominic Stevens. When Stevens built the original home for himself in 2008, it cost €25,000. Although Sandra makes a cogent argument to the city housing office that it would be a smarter, cheaper option for them to subsidize her construction than to pay for her lodging, the proposal is dismissed. But she pursues her quest with the help of a kindly contractor, a patron, and a ragtag group to build her dream house from scratch.

The tradition of building your own home might call up images of frontier homesteading in the U.S.—whether it’s a log cabin, a saltbox, or a bungalow. Similarly, Ireland has a rich history of DIY building—many construction laborers in the U.S. and U.K. were Irish “before they inherited the farm,” Stevens says.

Stevens thought he was exhibiting a 1960s counterculture Whole Earth Catalog sensibility, but he soon discovered he had tapped into Ireland’s deeply rooted traditions. And both nations have communal building customs. In the U.S., we barn raise; In Ireland, it’s called Meitheal—a term proudly used in Herself

Herself, directed by Phyllida Lloyd, was Clare Dunne’s idea, inspired by a close friend’s story. A single mother of three children was compelled to declare herself homeless when her landlord reclaimed her flat, and she could not find a replacement because of scarcity. Clare, a struggling actress in New York, took inspiration from both of their adversity stories and crafted this tale of empowerment.

Without realizing it, Dunne tapped into the maker movement where women are adept at construction, made feasible by cordless power tools requiring less strength, the ubiquity of big-box stores (Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Woodie’s in Ireland), and online tutorials.

The house itself is simple: three bedrooms, two stories, and 775 square feet. Stevens says “I drew upon my experience of modular building methods, the wonderful work of self-building pioneer Walter Segal, and the rural vernacular tradition of building your house instead of going and buying it.” Segal (1907–1985) was a Berlin-born British architect who developed a self-build method that uses standard materials to create ecologically sound homes with minimal experience.

The exterior is vertically corrugated matte black Onduline, a French roofing material made from plant fibers compressed with bitumen. It can be cut with a handsaw, and it’s watertight. Stevens says it looks like “expensive black cartridge paper,” and the application elicits the Irish currach boat, which sports a lightweight timber frame covered with stretched canvas. Stevens also cites the black cow sheds in Leitrim, the town where he built his home, and black Scandinavian houses like those on Fårö Island (including Ingmar Bergman’s home) that use pitch painted on timber.

Stevens’ self-build project grew out of his experience working in Berlin just after the wall came down. “We lived in a city that created itself,” he says—and he carried this sentiment back to Ireland. However, he says “Until I made my own house, I felt like a fraud on every building site I ever was on, because I didn’t really know what a builder went through.”

Stevens sees possibilities brought on by the current pandemic—the previously anonymous residents of his apartment block have begun socializing at a distance, swapping tools, and banding together to negotiate with the landlords. “It’s given people power,” he says.

He is reminded of Le Corbusier’s 1922 statement: “It is the question of building which lies at the root of the social unrest of today; architecture or revolution.” As Stevens says on irishvernacular.com, “The purpose of this website is to place the knowledge of how to build a house once more in ‘the commons’…Use it, enjoy it, respect it.”

Herself is currently streaming in the U.S. on Amazon Prime Video, and coming soon to Irish and UK cinemas. See plans to build the dwelling at irishvernacular.com.

Oral statement to Parliament

Updated statement of the Minister of Internal Affairs for Ukraine

The Interior Minister made a statement in Parliament on the measures taken by the Interior Ministry after the invasion of Ukraine.

From: Home Office and The Honorable MP Priti Patel

Published

February 28, 2022

Delivered:

February 28, 2022

Mr Speaker, Putin’s war with Ukraine is monstrous and unjustified. I am in constant contact with the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and the Ambassador in London.

The United Kingdom stands firmly by the side of the people of Ukraine and, as this House expected, the UK is stepping up and playing its part in responding to the dire situation on the ground in Ukraine.

Mr. Speaker, the government has already announced the first stage of an individual humanitarian route for the people of Ukraine, and the new Ukrainian humanitarian route directly meets the needs and demands of the Ukrainian government.

Each conflict and threat is unique and requires an individual response.

Our new itinerary will continue to keep pace with the evolving situation on the ground and already:

  • Hundreds of British citizens and their families living in Ukraine have been helped to leave – UK Visas and Immigration officials are working around the clock to help them
  • included dependents of UK citizens residing in Ukraine who need a UK visa to apply through temporary residence in Lviv or through visa application centers in Poland, Moldova, Romania and Hungary.

In recent weeks, a large number of teams have been sent to these areas, and applications have been processed within a few hours. We are in direct contact with individuals and we have also lowered the language requirements and salary thresholds so that people can get support.

If family members of British citizens do not meet the normal eligibility criteria but pass a security check, UK Visas and Immigration will give them permission to enter the UK outside the rules for 12 months and give priority to all applications.

We give British citizens and anyone living in the UK the opportunity to bring their closest Ukrainian relatives. Only through this extension can I confirm that another 100,000 Ukrainians will be able to find asylum in the UK with access to jobs and public services.

We are giving Ukrainian citizens already in the UK the opportunity to upgrade to the points-based immigration route or the family visa route free of charge.

We are extending visas for Ukrainian temporary workers in some industries, who can now stay until at least December 2022, primarily because people cannot return to Ukraine.

Any person in Ukraine who intends to apply for a family migration route must apply for assistance through a special 24-hour help line of the Ministry of Internal Affairs before submitting an application.

Mr Speaker, the UK continues to lead and contribute to every aspect of this Ukrainian conflict. I would urge colleagues not to try to work with cases on their own, but to direct people directly to the hotline number. Duplicating efforts will waste valuable time and cause confusion. This is the best and most effective way to help people.

Mr Speaker, over the weekend I saw members of this House calling for a complete visa-free regime for all Ukrainians.

Security screening and biometric checks are a fundamental part of our visa approval process around the world and will continue as they did with the evacuation from Afghanistan.

This is vital to keeping British citizens safe and ensuring that we help those who really need it, especially now that Russian troops are infiltrating Ukraine and merging with Ukrainian forces. The intelligence reports also speak of the presence of extremist groups and organizations that threaten the region as well as our homeland.

We know only too well what Putin’s Russia is willing to do, even on our soil, as we saw with the Salisbury bombing and the use of a nerve agent on the streets of Britain. The approach we’re taking is based on the strictest security guidelines, Mr Speaker.

The Prime Minister outlined many other ways to support Ukraine. There will be other statements in the House today.

But, Mr Speaker, I would like to add two more points. The Citizenship and Borders Bill is currently at the reporting stage elsewhere.

The bill contains provisions to allow visa penalties to be applied to certain countries that do not cooperate with the return of their citizens.

Now I am trying to expand these provisions so that a country can be specified if it has taken important steps that:

  • threaten international peace and security
  • led or may lead to an armed conflict, or
  • violate international humanitarian law

This expansion will build on the precedent of the Sanctions and Money Laundering Act 2018.

These powers will become available as soon as the bill receives royal assent. The sooner this happens, the sooner this House and all its members can act collectively.

Mr Speaker, we are always mindful of cyber attacks and disinformation coming from Russia.

They will indeed be met with very strong responses. And we have stepped up our international coordination on this issue.

Mr. Speaker, what is happening in Ukraine is absolutely heartbreaking and deeply wrong. But together with our international partners, we support the heroic Ukrainian people.

At the same time, Mr. Speaker, further work is underway through diplomatic channels, and the government of Ukraine today demanded that the Russian government be removed from membership in Interpol, and we will lead all international efforts in this direction.

  • With permission, Mr Speaker, I would like to make a statement briefing the House on the government’s humanitarian response to the terrible, unjust war that Putin is waging in Ukraine.
  • We are united in this House in horror from what is happening and the whole country is on the side of the heroic people of Ukraine.
  • Mr. Speaker, I have just returned from a meeting with our dear friend and colleague, the Ambassador of Ukraine in London, and I heard firsthand about the real pressure and tension within the country.
  • Putin must fail in his attack on Ukraine.
  • Working closely with the government of Ukraine and allies in the neighboring region, the United Kingdom stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine; sending military support, defensive military assistance, training thousands of Ukrainian troops, and imposing one of the toughest sanctions regimes in the world.
  • We support NATO partners, push for further economic reforms and Ukraine’s energy independence, ban Aeroflot, and call for Russia’s participation in the SWIFT banking system to end.
  • We will continue to actively and creatively think about what else we can all do.
  • As I said yesterday in the House of Representatives, the government will put forward amendments to the visa penalty measures in the Citizenship and Borders Bill so that we can slow down and effectively stop the processing of Russian visas or any state that poses a threat to our national security. or the interests of our allies around the world.
  • The government of Ukraine has demanded the removal of the Russian government from participation in Interpol, a position that the UK fully supports, and we call on other international partners to also call for and support it.
  • Mr. Speaker, yesterday I announced the first phase of an individual humanitarian support package for the people of Ukraine, after carefully listening to the requests and requests of the Ukrainian government.
  • We have already made significant and unprecedented changes to the immigration system.
  • We have helped hundreds of British citizens and their families living in Ukraine to leave the country, and Home Office staff are working around the clock to help them.
  • The Honorary Member for Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford raised a specific case yesterday and I am happy to confirm that the person concerned was able to travel to the UK.
  • Family members of British citizens living in Ukraine who need a UK visa can apply through the temporary office in Lviv or through the visa application centers in Poland, Moldova, Romania and Hungary.
  • We have built additional capacity in all locations at a pace, in anticipation of the invasion of Ukraine. This includes the pop-up Visa Application Center in Rzeszow in Poland, which currently has a total capacity of over 3,000 appointments per week.
  • Our contingency plans have already been put in place and are expected to further increase our total throughput to 6,000 appointments per week starting this week.
  • In contrast, the demand in these places is usually around 890 biometric appointments per week.
  • At each location remains available for meetings and rounds.
  • If more capacity is required, we will of course deliver it.
  • Mr Speaker, I should also add at this stage that our Rapid Deployment Teams are already in the region and in fact the FCDO deployed them a few weeks ago to support all of this work.
  • I have also removed the usual language requirements and salary thresholds in order to come to the UK to be with my family members.
  • And if family members of British citizens do not meet the normal eligibility criteria but pass all security checks, we will give them permission to enter the UK outside the normal rules for 12 months.
  • This means that British citizens and any person residing in the UK can bring their closest Ukrainian relatives with them. Through this policy alone, another 100,000 Ukrainians may be eligible to come to the UK and gain access to work and public services.
  • There is no limit on the number of participants that fall under this route, Mr. Speaker.
  • Any person in Ukraine who intends to apply for a family migration route must seek assistance from the special 24-hour line of the Ministry of Internal Affairs before submitting an application.
  • Ukrainian citizens already in the UK have been given the opportunity to upgrade to the points-based immigration or family visa route free of charge.
  • Visas for Ukrainian temporary workers in some industries are being extended so they can stay until at least December 31 of this year.
  • As I said yesterday, I heard some members calling for the abolition of visas.
  • Russian troops seek to infiltrate and merge with Ukrainian forces. There are extremists both on earth and in the region. Given this, and Putin’s readiness for violence on British soil, and in line with our approach, which we have consistently followed during all emergency evacuations, including those from Afghanistan, we cannot suspend any security checks or biometric checks of people we welcome to our territory. country. We have a collective duty to keep the British people safe and this approach is based on the highest safety guidelines.
  • Mr. Speaker, these measures were designed to ensure rapid implementation, and that is the point, without the need for legislation or changes in immigration rules. The Ukrainian people urgently need help, and we are doing it now.
  • As the Prime Minister noted today, I can also outline the second phase of our special humanitarian support package for the people of Ukraine.
  • First, we are creating an extensive Ukrainian family scheme so that British citizens and people living in the UK can bring a wider group of family members to the UK, extending the right to parents, grandparents, adult descendants, siblings and their immediate relatives.
  • Again, this scheme will be free.
  • Those joining a family in the UK will be granted leave for an initial period of 12 months. They will be able to work and access government funds.
  • Second, we will create a humanitarian sponsorship pathway that opens the way to the UK for Ukrainians who may not have family ties to the UK but who can connect with individuals, charities, businesses and community groups.
  • Those who qualify under this scheme will also be granted leave for an initial period of 12 months and will be able to work and access government services.
  • The Ministry of the Interior will work closely with all of our international partners on the ground to provide support to displaced Ukrainians in need of housing.
  • My colleague, Secretary of State for Level Up, will work with Delegated Administrations so that those who want to sponsor an individual or family can volunteer to quickly find Ukrainians in need.
  • There will be no quantitative restrictions in this scheme and we will welcome as many Ukrainians as we wish and we will select sponsors.
  • The success of the new path of humanitarian sponsorship will require a national effort across the country. And, Mr Speaker, our country will rise to this challenge.
  • Mr Speaker, this is a very generous and unprecedented package. This will mean that the British public and the Ukrainian diaspora will be able to support displaced Ukrainians in the UK until they can return to a free and sovereign Ukraine.
  • We strike for democracy and freedom against tyranny.
  • First of all, we are doing the right thing with the courageous people of Ukraine.
  • We will help UK citizens and their families leave Ukraine safely.
  • We will support our displaced Ukrainian friends.
  • We will respond decisively to Russian threats here in the UK.
  • We, Mr Speaker, will not back down.
  • We will do what is right.
  • I recommend this statement to the House of Representatives.

News story

Continued support for Ukrainians fleeing Russian invasion

UK citizens and people who have settled in the UK will be able to bring extended family members to the UK and a sponsored humanitarian visa route will be created.

From: Ministry of the Interior and The Honorable MP Priti Patel

Published

March 1, 2022

Thousands more Ukrainians will be welcomed to the UK as the government continues to support Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion.

The Prime Minister this morning (March 1) announced the expansion of our Ukraine Humanitarian Route, which will increase the number of people from Ukraine who are eligible to come to the UK to be reunited with their families.

In addition to immediate family members, British citizens and persons of any nationality who have settled in the UK will now receive support to bring their parents, grandparents, adult children and siblings to the UK.

Regular salary or language test requirements will be waived. Necessary security checks will be carried out given the malicious actions taken by the Russian state to infiltrate Ukraine, but the Interior Ministry will continue to expedite these checks and process applications as quickly as possible.

People in the region who qualify for this itinerary are advised to call the toll-free 24/7 support line at +44 808 164 8810 and contact the Visa Application Center in a neighboring country for biometric registration after application.

The Prime Minister also announced plans for a new scheme for the arrival of Ukrainians here who are not connected with the UK. The Unrestricted Sponsored Humanitarian Visa Route will allow donors such as communities, private donors or local authorities to bring people to the UK. They will be able to work and the sponsor will provide them with housing and integration assistance.

The government will work closely with international partners and neighboring countries on the scheme to ensure that displaced Ukrainians forced from their homes are supported to apply. We will make sure that those who want to sponsor a person or family can become volunteers and quickly find Ukrainians in need, working closely with autonomous administrations and local authorities across the country.

This is the latest humanitarian aid package to help the Ukrainian people, which is being put forward after extensive discussions with the leaders of Ukraine and other countries in the region.

Home Secretary Priti Patel said:

Putin’s war against Ukraine is monstrous and unjustifiable, and the Government will stand by the people of Ukraine both at home and abroad.

I spoke with our friends in Ukraine and in the region to make sure that the humanitarian assistance we offer is in the interests of the Ukrainian people.

Our Ukraine Humanitarian Route will allow families to reunite in the UK, and our bespoke sponsorship route will ensure the safety of Ukrainians who have sadly been forced to leave their homes.

This prompt response to the abhorrent Russian invasion is living proof of our New Immigration Plan – we are doing what is right and fair to support the people who really need it.

While the Visa Application Center in Kyiv was forced to close due to the conflict, the Ministry of the Interior increased its capacity for other countries, including Hungary, Poland and Moldova. A new temporary visa application center was also opened in Rzeszow, Poland.

The phased steps taken by the UK are in response to the changing threat landscape. Additional adjustments will be made, if necessary, following discussions with Ukrainian leaders to ensure support is appropriate for their needs.

This is part of a broader effort to support Ukraine in the face of a Russian invasion. The UK continues to support Ukraine with defensive weapons and economic support, as well as £220 million in humanitarian aid.

The announcement is the latest in a series of measures:

  • Last week, the Home Secretary confirmed that Ukrainians who are in the UK on a work, study or visitor visa will receive a temporary extension of their visas or be able to switch to other visa routes, and those who have a seasonal work visa can temporarily extend your vacation.
  • We have eliminated fees, accelerated visa applications and allowed entry for those who did not meet the requirements.
  • The Ministry of Internal Affairs has set up round-the-clock hotlines to support people traveling along the Ukrainian Humanitarian Route.
  • The Home Secretary has also closed the Tier 1 investor visa route to ensure that people who have profited from dirty money cannot access the UK and the visas of people we do not want to be in the country are cancelled.

THE END

NOTES TO EDITORS

  • The new changes will allow extended family members of British citizens and people living in the UK to travel. These will be parents, grandparents, adult children and brothers and sisters from Ukraine, as well as immediate relatives.
  • Extended family members will also be able to bring their next of kin with them. For example, a brother or sister of a settled person will be able to come to the UK with his wife and child.
  • Immediate family members are defined as;
    • spouse or civil partner
    • unmarried partner (you must have lived together in a relationship for at least 2 years)
    • your parent if you are under 18
    • your child under the age of 18
    • adult relative you care for and who lives with you for health reasons
  • Anyone who thinks they may be eligible for this benefit can call the toll-free 24/7 support line at +44 808 164 8810.
  • Further details on the community sponsorship route are being developed at a pace and will be communicated in due course, including how individuals and organizations in the UK can apply for sponsorship.

“We need to work on the source of the problem.” Can domestic violence be prevented?

  • Ksenia Batanova

“I got out of prison in 2018. I did two years for drugs and had a fight with a friend that ended up being slapped by me. It only happened once in a five year relationship. But I figured it out that since I could do it once, I can do it again,” 26-year-old Englishman Thomas Smith* tells the BBC Russian Service.

Thomas is a member of the British Department of Justice’s program to change the behavior of aggressors. This and other programs work with the cause, that is, the author of domestic violence, and not with its consequences, that is, the victim. But is it possible to correct the behavior of the aggressor?

The BBC Russian service studied the experience of Great Britain and Russia.

After being released from prison for beating his girlfriend for six months, Thomas Smith came every Tuesday from 6 to 9 pm to a group where behavioral specialists worked with him and other men. If he refused or stopped attending classes, he could be sent back to prison.

“Actually, I liked it there almost from the first lesson. I learned a lot about myself – about anger, about triggers, about how not to drive yourself into dark thoughts even deeper,” says Thomas.

He justifies himself by saying that if it weren’t for the drugs, he would hardly have hit his girlfriend. After his release, he stopped drinking: “I don’t even drink alcohol. I’ve been a driver for the NHS [National Health Service] for almost two years. It’s the first time in my life that I have worked for such a long time. Before that, I made a living by petty theft.”

Now he lives alone, but he sees his three daughters on weekends. “The oldest is seven, the middle is four, the youngest is a year old. The middle and youngest are the children of the woman I hit. The youngest appeared after I got out of prison. We didn’t see each other for a long time, that’s what happened,” Thomas shares.

What the numbers say

In the UK, during the first spring lockdown, the police recorded almost 260,000 cases of domestic violence – 7% more than during the same period last year. In the early weeks, according to a joint study between the BBC’s Panorama and Women’s Aid, police received messages from victims almost every 30 seconds. Even before the pandemic, the statistics were alarming – every week in the UK, two women died at the hands of their former or current partner.

“There are 2 million cases of domestic violence every year in the country. As you can imagine, each of these cases has an author. Quite a lot of rapists, aren’t they? And they can belong to any social class,” says Veronica Oakeshott, Project Manager to work with domestic abusers Drive. Veronica and her team work with people who could potentially kill or seriously injure their partners or children.

Information about these men was broadcast in Drive by the British organization MARAC. This service operates throughout the UK and is tasked with holding regular meetings at the local level with the police, child protection services, independent domestic violence counselors and other services. At the meetings, they exchange information about homes where domestic violence may occur or where it has already occurred.

Drive specialists received information and, together with other services, began to work with the abuser and the victim. The know-how of the Drive project was the systematic support of the victim and the rapist by specialists.

“The rapist has his own manager, a specialist of the highest class. Another consultant is constantly in touch with the victim. They communicate with each other. If the rapist says that he has reformed, and the victim tells his consultant that he did not let her out of the house, we we can involve the police or social services,” says Veronica.

65% of the men Drive works with have at least one additional problem in addition to violent behavior: addiction to alcohol or drugs , lack of work or poor living conditions. “It doesn’t justify them in any way,” says Veronika. “But solving these problems can affect the behavior of the abuser.”

Janey Starling, Campaign Manager for the feminist organization Level Up, is more pessimistic: “Each of us has the ability to harm another. And each of us chooses whether to do it or not. I’m not sure that all the men who go to programs without fail, they are determined to change themselves. Of course, they will come to programs so as not to go to jail or to be able to see their children. But will they change their behavior? Of course, you need to work with them, but the most important thing is help women.”

Thomas Smith believes that men should be able to attend such programs. “The abuser needs to admit that his behavior is only his fault. But he also needs help,” he says.

Researchers say that programs to change domestic abusers still reduce violence statistics. At the same time, the methods and availability of programs differ in different parts of Britain.

“The country does not have a unified national strategy for how work should be done to prevent domestic violence by changing the behavior of the aggressor,” says Veronica Oakeshott.

In January 2020, Drive and 70 other organizations asked the government to develop and fund a unified strategy for programs to correct the behavior of abusers. In her opinion, the effectiveness of such programs is obvious, and working with rapists reduces the number of cases of domestic violence.

“This is not psychotherapy”

Respect works with domestic abusers in England and Wales. It has been in existence since 2001, and the 40-page set of rules by which it operates begins: “We keep the victim of domestic violence safe by working with the cause, which is the abuser. ” “Behavior change programs are not psychotherapy for men. Our main client is their victims. Everything we do with him, we do for her,” says Keira Bergman, who works with Respect.

“They come voluntarily, but it would be cunning to say that men do it voluntarily with the words “I have been thinking about my terrible behavior for a long time and I want to change.” police – quarrels with their partners and after threatening their wives or girlfriends that they will leave if he doesn’t change,” she explains.

Both Keira and Veronika say “men” when talking about rapists and “women” when talking about victims. Of course, there are also reverse cases, but the statistics are relentless – the vast majority of cases of domestic violence are committed by men.

Carl Hall, Assistant Rehabilitation Officer from KSS CRC, who works with men already convicted of domestic violence, agrees with colleagues. He says that there are women among the abusers, but, as a rule, their aggression is a reaction to the violence from the man that happened before.

  • Swedish woman kept her adult son out of the house for 30 years. Police are investigating how it happened

All British experts interviewed by the BBC mentioned the main guarantee that a program to change the behavior of a rapist will work – you need to be in touch with his victim.

“If you are not in contact with the victim from the very moment you start working with her abuser, you can make her life worse,” warns Keira Bergman.

She reminds that domestic aggressors are big manipulators and anything can be expected from them. “For example, a wife or girlfriend agreed not to leave if the partner goes to a behavior change program. But nothing prevents him from signing up and just stopping walking, and at home saying that he still attends classes,” Bergman gives an example.

“During class, they may yell, swear, threaten to beat their partner or children when they get home. If we hear such threats, we report them to the police,” says Hall.

Abuser behavior is dealt with in group and individual sessions that last from a few weeks to a year.

As a rule, there are two trainers in a group – a man and a woman. This collaboration helps demonstrate to program participants what healthy relationships between people of different sexes look like.

What’s happening in Russia

There are no official statistics on cases of domestic violence in Russia, but non-governmental organizations that provide assistance to victims say that requests for help have increased by 10-20% since the start of the pandemic. Precise data are not available due to the fact that the term “domestic violence” does not exist in Russian legislation.

There is data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, according to which, in January-September 2019, about 15,000 crimes were committed against women in the sphere of family and domestic relations in Russia. There is also Rosstat data, which indicates that in 2019In 2008, in Russia, one of the members of their families committed more than 23,000 crimes against women.

  • Home is a dangerous place. Russian human rights activists talk about the growth of domestic violence in quarantine

who would like to beat his children,” says one of the Russian activists, who asked not to be named. After the episode she is talking about, the woman began to help people who feel they cannot cope with their aggression.

There are separate organizations in Russia that deal with abusers and develop programs to change the behavior of domestic abusers. But, as a rule, these are private initiatives; there is no unified state strategy to prevent domestic violence.

Crisis center “Ekaterina” in the Sverdlovsk region since 1998 helps women and children who have suffered from domestic violence. Two years ago, Olga Selkova, deputy director of the center, developed a program for men who were convicted of domestic violence and are either in prison or on probation.

“I’ve been collecting information bit by bit, basically the program is based on the Duluth model. We start by helping them learn their emotions, explain what and why they are angry,” says Olga.

The program is carried out jointly with the main department of the Federal Penitentiary Service for the Sverdlovsk Region. Olga Selkova says that so far there are no analogues of this program in the country. In two years, 39men.

“We had a group of killers. They are really dangerous men. Most of them were beaten by their parents all the time in childhood. They are poorly educated, they have huge gaps in knowledge. They do not understand what emotional intelligence is. They don’t even have such words. know,” Selkova says.

There is no data on how much domestic violence costs the Russian budget. Alena Popova, one of the authors and supporters of the law on domestic violence, which has not yet been adopted in Russia, is sure that if you calculate the economic component of such crimes, then it simply rolls over.

“It is more economically beneficial for all citizens to prevent a rapist from reaching the red line. Temporary or permanent disability, a woman’s inability to support herself and children, falling into poverty – it is much cheaper for taxpayers to stop the aggressor,” Popova is convinced.

  • Locked together. How victims of domestic violence live in quarantine

In the police statistics of the English county of Kent, an abuser is mentioned who during his life committed violence in one form or another against 230 women.

“Rehabilitation and assistance to these victims is much more expensive than changing the behavior of one man. You need to work with the source of the problem, not with its consequences,” Carl Hall agrees.

According to the results of 2016-2017, domestic violence cost the British budget more than 66 billion pounds a year. The bulk of this money went to the psychological and physical recovery of the victims and to compensate for the loss of women’s jobs.

“Women who are victims of domestic violence pay double the price. First they are beaten, and then they have to look for new housing, move to another city, change or even lose their jobs, transfer their children to another kindergarten or school, and all this It’s costing them dearly, including financially. It’s time to change the question “Why didn’t she leave?” to “Why didn’t he stop?” Veronica Oakeshott is convinced.0005

Laws on family violence: View from Britain

Russian Duma decides to lighten punishment for domestic violence in cases where it was committed for the first time and did not cause serious injury , – caused alarm not only in Russia itself, but also abroad.

The law decriminalizing domestic violence in Russia not only contrasts sharply with the approach in Europe, it undermines a woman’s basic right to a life free of violence and cruelty.

Elsewhere, both in Europe and beyond, governments are signing the Istanbul Convention, a landmark international treaty that provides comprehensive measures to prevent and protect victims of domestic violence.

  • Unrecorded victims: domestic violence in Russian families
  • Non-traditional values: opinions of family violence fighters on the amendment of the Criminal Code

Although the UK has not yet ratified the Istanbul Convention, British legislation and public policy in this area are progressive – and changes occur frequently thanks to the activism of women who stand up for their rights.

On 24 February, the British Parliament will host the third reading of the Convention, and if enough parliamentarians, convinced by activists from their constituencies, visit it, consideration of the document will move to the next level.

In the approach to domestic violence outlined in the new Russian law, the following assumptions are made :

1. The first time an offense was reported to the police is the first time such an offense was committed .

In fact, it is very rare for women to go to the police after their first domestic violence incident. At the time of treatment, as a rule, women suffer from it for several months, or even years.

“Of 510 women surveyed who reported domestic violence to the police, 48.2% (246 women) had experienced violence for two years or more, and 9. 4% (48 women) – 10 years or more 32.3% (164 women) – less than a year and 11 months, 19.2% (98 women) didn’t know how long, and 0.4% (two women) didn’t answer.”

There is no evidence for such an alleged trend Family violence should be a criminal offense both to punish the offender and serve as a deterrent to others Punishment for any manifestation of family violence should be appropriate to the crime and take into account its consequences for victims, not the fact that domestic violence was reported for the first time.

3. E There are cases in which cruelty is acceptable.

Domestic violence is unacceptable under any circumstances – it is a crime against basic human rights that has been recognized by law for a long time.

The 1979 Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women was ratified by the USSR in 1981, by Great Britain in 1986. Thus, states have an obligation to protect this population from violence and to protect its members when their right to life is threatened.

Law on “ coercive control”

British law clarifies that domestic violence is not only physical violence

The British government introduced a new crime in the Criminal Code – to combat the very nature of domestic violence, “coercive control” (coercive control), that is, emotional and psychological violence against loved ones.

Thus, British law makes it clear that domestic violence is not only physical violence. It can also take the form of intimidation, humiliation, psychological and emotional bullying for a long time, which restrict the freedom of the victim and cause serious harm to her, forcing her to live in constant fear.

Forced control takes away your voice. He turns you into a puppet. It seems to be a normal behavior, but the constant presence, the constant repetition of this behavior makes it something more than just a consequence of a bad mood. One look is enough to shut your mouth and keep you in line, but while you can barely breathe.” (Victim of domestic violence)

On average, two women a week in England and Wales die at the hands of their current or former partner. Many of these women were victims of coercive control.

In Britain domestic violence legislation is based on common law crimes: simple assault, harassment, threat of murder. Thus, British law means that the crime does not get any easier if it is committed against a loved one, within the walls of a common home .

Moreover, since 2006, sentencing guidelines have clarified that in cases where the crime is committed at home, there is a high probability of aggravating circumstances that increase its seriousness. It is difficult to imagine that in Russian homes the situation with aggravating circumstances is very different.

In the UK, victims of domestic violence have the option of seeking protection from the police – there are a number of steps they can take. For example, the police may remove the alleged abuser from the family home for 48 hours. The police can also apply to the criminal court for a protection order that will prevent him from returning home for 28 days.

This is a way to make the home safer for victims of domestic violence and to enable them to seek further help and protection. Victims of violence can also apply to a civil court with a request to limit the abuser’s ability to communicate with the victim.

But we in Britain are still a long way from keeping all potential victims away from domestic violence. Access to protection is not always easy, and police and courts do not always take domestic violence seriously. However, our government hears the experts, and all major political parties are united in their desire to fight this unacceptable crime.

People in England will start getting two free rapid COVID-19 tests per week

  • Society

Every person in the UK will start getting two free coronavirus rapid tests every week from 9 April. This is necessary in order to monitor the health of people after the lifting of a number of restrictions

The UK government will give every resident of England two free rapid tests for coronavirus per week, the government said in a statement. The program will start on April 9th.

Tests will also be available to people who do not have symptoms of COVID-19. Prior to this, rapid tests were available only to citizens at risk and those who could not work from home, including medical staff. Now, as the authorities hope, people will be tested more often to prevent new outbreaks of the disease.

Over 100,000 businesses have registered to receive rapid tests for their employees. Residents of England will be able to order tests at home, get tested at work, at school or other educational institutions, or receive them at a local PCR laboratory at a set time. In addition, testing will be organized by local authorities.

‘Capitalism and greed’: UK Prime Minister reveals reasons for successful vaccination in the country

People over 18 and without symptoms of COVID-19 will be able to get seven rapid tests on their hands at once at participating pharmacies. If tests are performed at home on their own, the result will have to be recorded at 119. If the test is positive, isolation is required and another test is required for confirmation.

Regular testing of people for coronavirus, along with vaccination, is the main condition of the UK’s plans to open the economy and lift restrictions. According to government statistics, every third person infected with COVID-19does not experience any symptoms and can spread the virus without knowing it. Rapid tests quickly detect the infection, which means that the sick person can be isolated just as quickly. After running such tests, 120,000 positive results were identified that would not have been detected otherwise, the government said.

The UK has begun a gradual lifting of restrictions since March. First, the students returned to the schools, and then the authorities allowed groups of up to six people to meet outdoors. In mid-April, the government plans to reopen shops and pubs, most of which have been closed since the end of 2020. The country expects to remove all restrictions by July. More than 5 million people in the UK have already been fully vaccinated. Over 31 million received the first dose of the vaccine, according to CNBC.

UK could become a net oil exporter

Business

close

100%

British oil companies intend to launch several new projects in the North Sea. This will give the UK a chance to regain the title of net oil exporter in the near future. Given that the US is constantly increasing production, the plans of the British are bad news for Russia and OPEC, which are trying to balance the market through agreements. However, experts urge not to dramatize the situation.

According to a study by JBC Energy GmbH, with the launch of several new projects in the North Sea this year, UK crude oil production could exceed 1 million barrels per day.

“There is clear potential for the UK to return to being a net exporter again,” Bloomberg cites the study’s findings.

However, when exactly this might happen is not specified. In a positive way, analysts are adjusting the plans of the oilmen. At the end of December, the independent company Premier Oil launched production at the new Catcher oil field in the North Sea. The initial set production volume at Catcher is 10,000 b/d, and it is planned to increase it to 60,000 b/d by mid-2018.

Oil and gas giant BP Plc last year began developing a Quad 204 project with Shell and Siccar Point Energy, which is estimated to have a capacity of 130,000 barrels of oil per day.

Another industry leader, Shell, announced in January that it had made an investment decision to develop the Penguins oil and gas field in the North Sea. Within the framework of the project, it is planned, in particular, to drill eight new production wells. Maximum production will be around 45,000 boe. in a day.

If all plans go ahead, the UK could be the second country to take advantage of the OPEC+ deal to capture global market share. Recall that under this agreement, members of the cartel, Russia and other oil-producing states are trying to balance the market and reduce oil production by 1.8 million bpd.

The United States took advantage of the first fruits of the foreign oil consensus. At the end of last year, they began to increase production. According to the forecast of the Energy Information Administration of the US Department of Energy (IEA), US oil production will increase in 2018 by 1. 26 million barrels per day and will reach 10.59million bpd.

At the same time, in the fourth quarter of 2018, US companies can reach a production level of 11.4 million b/d, which is higher than the level of Russia (10.9 million b/d in January this year) and Saudi Arabia (about 10 million b/s).

The head of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, emphasizes that “the growth rate of shale oil production in the United States is very high.” “Very soon, the US will become the number one oil producing country,” he says.

However, the United States will not be able to become a net exporter in the foreseeable future – the daily volume of oil consumption exceeds 20 million barrels, which is approximately twice the level of its own production.

In the UK the situation is different. The last time the country was a net oil exporter was in 2004, according to Bloomberg calculations. Later, it turned into an oil importer, since, according to BP, production volumes have been steadily declining from 2000 to 2014.

The country now consumes about 1.5 million barrels of oil a day, with the UK producing an average of 914,000 barrels of crude oil in 2017.

Great Britain due to new projects in the North Sea can become a net exporter of oil with production of more than 1 million barrels of oil per day, said Sergey Suverov, head of the analytical department at BK-Savings.

But the problem for London is that North Sea oil is largely depleted, so production growth is unsustainable, he warns.

We should also not forget that offshore deposits tend to deplete faster than traditional onshore deposits, says Ekaterina Grushevenko, an expert at the Energy Center of the Skolkovo Business School.

Even the possible significant discoveries of new reserves will not allow a significant increase in production, as it will be necessary to compensate for the rate of decline, she believes.

However, even if Britain succeeds in an oil breakthrough, it will not have a big impact on the balance of power in the market, Suverov believes. Now oil production in the world as a whole is about 95-100 million bpd, that is, the share of the UK will be about 1%, he explains.
