Think about the beating your wood floors endure on a daily basis: high heels, pet nails, children’s toys, and shifting furniture, to name a few! Tough as wood floors may be, their finish is still susceptible to scratches and scuffs. Refinishing—the process of sanding floors down entirely to apply a new surface finish—is costly and really only necessary every few decades. But polishing with a product specifically formulated for your floors is an easy, inexpensive way to regain shine, even out imperfections, and extend the life of your handsome hardwood. All it takes is a flat-head mop with a microfiber cleaning pad and commercial wood floor polish, which comes in low- or high-gloss sheens to achieve your desired look.

Whether or not you should polish your floors, however, depends on their finish. Those with a protective surface—a waterproof barrier such as urethane, for example—will benefit from polish, but floors with penetrating finishes like tung oil or unsealed wood require wax instead of polish. Using the wrong product can cause a host of problems, from making floors too slick to dulling the finish, and impair proper refinishing down the road. So it’s important to determine which kind of floor you have (our Step 1 in this guide on how to polish wood floors) before you dive in and cause damage.

STEP 1: Test the finish on your wood floors.

If you’re unsure what type of finish is on your floor, scrape off a tiny bit from an inconspicuous area with a sharp knife blade.

If the finish is smudged but no clear material is scraped up, your floor probably has a penetrating finish. Stop here, and do not polish these wood floors; these should only be waxed.
If you see a clear material, your flooring likely has a surface finish. It’s safe to polish these wood floors. Still, be sure to test out the polish in a small hidden or inconspicuous location on the wood before tackling the entire floor.

STEP 2: Clear and clean your wood floors of dust and dirt.

Empty the room, removing as much furniture as possible, then clean the floor thoroughly to remove dust and dirt. Sweep or vacuum, then mop with a commercial wood floor cleaner or solution of a quarter-cup of dish soap and a gallon of warm water to lift any lingering grime. Give the floors a final pass with a clean, water-dampened mop to remove any cleaner residue. Dry completely with a soft, clean towel.

STEP 3: Polish wood floors to a shine.

Begin in a back corner of the room, plotting a path that will have you end up near an exit, pour a small S-shaped amount of wood floor polish onto the floor.

Using a flat-surface mop, work the solution back and forth in the direction of the wood grain, smoothing out any air bubbles. Work in small areas (about three to five feet wide in either direction) to best control the amount of polish you’ve applied.

While you must make sure to completely coat the floor, thin layers will dry more rapidly than thick ones, and you can always apply another coat if needed.

Note: Polish can stain drywall and baseboards, so avoid splashing on these areas.

STEP 4: Hold off restoring the room for at least a day.

Wait at least one hour before allowing light traffic through the room and a full day before moving your belongings back in and resuming normal use. To avoid scratching, take care not to drag or slide furniture; pick up each piece up and place them where they belong. Attach felt furniture pads underneath heavy pieces for extra protection.

STEP 5: Follow a few precautions to keep wood floors looking great, and you can put off your next polishing job!

Now that your floors look like new, maintain them by placing rugs at entry doors to prevent dirt from being tracked inside. If your kitchen has wood flooring, also place a rug at the sink to catch stray drops of water.

Stick to a regular cleaning routine, vacuuming weekly and giving the floors a deep clean monthly. Skip any homemade cleaning solutions that include diluted vinegar or ammonia on wood floors—all they’ll do is dull a surface-finished floor. What Type of Finish Does Your Floor Have?

One of the key bits of information for keeping hardwood floors shiny is knowing what type of finish has been applied to the wood. Was your solid or engineered hardwood sealed with a polyurethane or polyacrylic urethane finish, or was it finished with a paste wax? If you don’t know, here’s a test to help you make the best cleaning choices:

In a spot with normal foot traffic, place a drop of water on the floor. If the water is quickly absorbed or causes spotting on the finish, this indicates the hardwood has not been sealed and should never be cleaned with water. But if the bead of water just sits on the surface without being absorbed, it means the hardwood has been sealed.
To test for a paste wax finish, grab some fine steel wool and rub it lightly over the floor in a corner. If the floor has been waxed, there will be a gray, waxy film left on the steel wool.

7 Reasons Wood Floors Look Dull

Now that you’ve figured out what type of finish is on your hardwood floors, there are seven common issues that can cause them to look dull.

You’re just redistributing the dirt: Using a dirty mop or forgetting to sweep, dust mop, or vacuum the floor before cleaning will simply redistribute the dirt. Imagine all that grit, dust, and dirt getting trapped in the cleaning solution and simply staying on the surface of the floor.
Your cleaner is doing more harm than good: Many acrylic-based liquid waxes that promise to make your wood floors glow can actually make them look worse. When applied on top of polyurethane finishes or paste wax, the floor can look patchy or turn milky. You can use mineral spirits and elbow grease on one small area at a time to remove the milky look of acrylic waxes. To completely restore the shine though, you’ll have to strip and reseal the floors. Additionally, harsh chemicals such as chlorine bleach, ammonia, undiluted vinegar, or pine oil can damage floor finishes. Read labels, choose a commercial product like Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner that is formulated for sealed wood floors, and follow manufacturer guidelines for use.
Using too much product: Even if you are doing everything correctly, using too much cleaning product or water will leave floors looking worse. More is not always better.
Leaving the job half done: After damp mopping or waxing a hardwood floor, the job should be finished with a good buffing to prevent streaking. Simply use a dry microfiber mop to buff the finish and ensure a shiny floor.
Scratches are out of control: If you have pets with sharp claws, forget to put clean doormats inside and outside entrance areas, or frequently wear shoes with hard heels in the house, you’re going to have scratches. Scratches and scuffs equal dull floors. Practice a little prevention to keep them to a minimum.
Waxy buildup: If the floors were not sealed with a polyurethane finish and rely on a carnauba paste wax to create the shine, the wax can build up and look dull. Even if you use wax appropriately only once or twice a year, eventually, it will build up and turn dull in low-traffic areas. Paste wax can be stripped off using mineral spirits or another commercial wax stripper.
The floor needs refinishing: No finish on hardwood floors lasts forever if the floor has foot traffic. Solid hardwood floors can be refinished and resealed numerous times. Even engineered hardwood, which has a thinner veneer, can be refinished and resealed a couple of times before needing to be replaced.

How Do You Remove Dull Film From Hardwood Floors?

Steam cleaning is a chemical-free way to remove the haze or film from hardwood floors. We recommend going quickly so that steam doesn’t build up in areas of the floor for too long.

You could also try cleaning with distilled white vinegar.

Mix together one cup of vinegar with one gallon of hot water. Using a cloth, gently rub the hardwood floors in circular motions to remove the dull film. Once finished, go over the floor with a clean damp cloth to remove vinegar residue.

Lastly, wipe the floor dry with a cloth. Make sure the floor is completely dry before using the room again.

How we test wood floor cleaners

In the Good Housekeeping Cleaning Lab we’re continuously testing floor cleaning essentials like vacuum cleaners, mops, robot vacuums and steam mops. During our experts’ initial test, we tested twenty-four wood floor cleaners exactly the same way, cleaning 216 stains and scuff marks from wood flooring panels. We tested how well each product cleaned after an equal amount of passes and how many passes had to be made with each product to completely remove scuff marks and stains. In addition to performance tests, we also analyzed ease of application. All product labels were reviewed for proper safety and precautionary notices. Since then, we have continued to test new wood floor cleaning products as they become available, updating this story with the latest and greatest wood floor cleaners.

The two vacuum cleaners on this list are models we tested or from brands that we’ve tested before and performed well in our ongoing tests, which we test on different flooring panels using our custom-built, automated machine.

What to look for when shopping for the best wood floor cleaner

✔️ Product Type: Hardwood floor cleaners come in various different forms like sprays, creams, concentrated liquids and spray mops, not to mention all the different kinds of vacuums to choose from for picking up dust and debris, like canister vacuums, stick vacuums and robot vacuums to name a few. During our tests in the Cleaning Lab, our experts found that all of the wood floor cleaners we tested were able to remove at least some stains and scuffs regardless of how they are dispensed. For the easiest products to use, spray bottles and spray mops are the best choice because they can be sprayed directly on hardwood floors and require no diluting, plus they topped our tests in performance and ease of use.

What is the best thing to use to clean and care for hardwood floors?

The best way to give your wood floors some TLC is to leave your shoes at the door, vacuum regularly to remove abrasive dirt and dust (with a straight suction vacuum or with the rotating brush turned off to prevent scratching), clean up spills promptly and keep your pets’ nails trimmed.

When it’s time to clean your floors, use a light application of one of our recommended products and work in small three-foot square sections to avoid over-wetting the floor. Make sure the area you’ve just cleaned dries promptly before moving on to the next section, as too much moisture sitting on wood for too long can be damaging. For quick touch-ups, clean in the direction of the wood planks. For deeper cleaning, clean both with and across the planks to nab dirt trapped in the crevices. Only damp-clean floors when they need it, depending on how much traffic they get. There’s no need to over-wash them; in fact, doing so can do more harm than good.

What should you not use on a wood floor?

You may have read that wood floors should only be cleaned with vinegar — we don’t recommend it. Vinegar cleans on the surface, but it’s acidic and can dull the finish over time. Steam mops should also never be used on hardwood floors, even sealed ones. Excessive water and humidity cause water to penetrate the finish of the wood and warp hardwood flooring. Solid wood flooring is more easily affected by factors like humidity, water and extreme temperature changes. Abrasive cleaners, waxes, oils, furniture sprays and products containing ammonia should also be avoided to prevent damage to the seal of hardwood floors.

How to Make Hardwood Floors Look Like New Without Refinishing

Dull and dingy hardwood floors often just need a bit of “touching up” rather than full-scale refinishing to restore their luster and shine. To make your hardwood floors look like new without refinishing, consider a few suggestions as well as some tips on keeping wood flooring looking its best throughout the years.

First, avoid mopping wood floors with a damp mop. As water dries, it tends to leave behind stains and marks that create a dull, dingy look. Use only a dry dust mop with soft microfibers to remove dirt and dust.

Never use ordinary floor cleaners meant for tile and stone on wood floors, even for tough stains. Floor cleaners often strip wood floors of their protective coatings, creating a dull look.

Remove permanent markers, food stains, and other discoloration with a dab of toothpaste on a dry cloth. Rub the toothpaste in a circular motion and then use another clean cloth to remove it. Toothpaste offers a gentle cleaning that won’t strip wood floors or dull their appearance.

For everyday cleaning, use an oil soap; dilute according to package directions and apply lightly to wood floors. Rinse with a clean, damp mop and then use another mop or towel to dry the floors completely. Oil soap moisturizes wood as you work and won’t dry it out as does water or a tile floor cleaner.

Blot water spills immediately! As wood absorbs water it then fades or discolors, creating an unsightly mark or stain. Water also strips wood sealants and coatings.

If your wood floor has a penetrating finish such as tung oil, you’ll want to add a wax coating rather than buffing or polishing. If you’re not sure if the floors have a penetrating finish, choose an inconspicuous spot and scrape up a bit of the wood surface with a sharp knife. If the area gets smudged but no clear material comes up onto the knife, the floors probably have a penetrating finish.

To add polish, first clean the floor thoroughly and ensure it’s dry. Next, add a small bit of wood floor polish in an S shape along a corner of the room. Use a flat-surface mop meant for wood floor polishing and gently spread the polish along the length of the room, working with the wood grain.

When applying polish, start with thin layers and allow them to dry before deciding if you need another coat. It’s also good to wait a full day before applying a second coat, as sometimes polish looks better and brighter once it’s set and dry!

Buffing works like refinishing however, rather than removing a thin layer of wood to prepare it for a fresh coat of paint and sealant, buffing removes slight scratches and materials that might dull wood floors. Homeowners can typically rent buffing machines at home improvement or hardware stores.

Do Those Hardwood Floors Need Refinishing?

While proper cleaning and polishing can give wood floors a bright, fresh appearance, hardwood does need refinishing on occasion. Refinishing involves sanding away a thin top layer of the wood and then applying fresh paint or stain and a sealant coat. That sanding process removes nicks, scratches, minor dents, stains, and other imperfections not easily addressed by polishing, cleaning, or buffing.

Refinishing is sometimes a costly investment for homeowners; as it does remove that small top layer of wood, you can also refinish those floors only so many times before you’ve removed so much wood that they then need replacing! Since you don’t want to refinish wood floors more often than necessary, how do you know when it’s time to schedule this work for your home?

If you’ve tried to remove water or food stains with standard cleaning or buffing, consider refinishing. Sanding typically pulls up that damaged wood area, or you can then cover over the stains with a new paint color. You might also consider refinishing if you’re just tired of the floor’s color and can’t achieve the look you want with buffing or polishing!

Buffing and liquid polishes also remove or fill in small scratches and nicks along wood floor surfaces but can’t always correct deep or larger scratches. Buffing also doesn’t always polish away dents, or remove damaged sealant and fading paint! To correct severely damaged floors, consider refinishing.

How to Protect Hardwood Floors From Damage

One of the best ways to keep your home’s beautiful hardwood floors looking their best is to protect them from damage in the first place! Before you search online for how to “make my hardwood floors look like new without refinishing,” consider some pro tips for avoiding damage and anything that might dull a hardwood floor’s shine.

One vital tip for homeowners is to keep floors as clean as possible; dirt, dust, and other debris get ground into even the densest wood every time you walk over those floors, creating a dull look. Sweep the floors or use a dust mop every day and invest in a quality air purifier or filter if needed, to remove airborne dirt and other irritants.

Since deep scratches are difficult to remove without refinishing, avoid rough sisal area rugs or scratchy area rug backings. Invest in softer jute or cotton rugs and choose gentle nonslip backings as needed. Attach soft cork or felt stoppers under furniture legs, to keep them from scratching floors every time they’re moved.

First consider that darker colors tend to hide scratches and other marks more readily than lighter colors. If you have children or pets or know your floors will undergo lots of wear and tear for any reason, choose a darker species of wood such as cherry. You might also choose an inexpensive pine or oak and have it painted a dark color.

Denser wood like teak are also less likely to suffer scratches and dents, but they’re also harder to sand down and refinish. For an eco-friendly option, choose bamboo, as this grass species grows quite quickly. Sanding of parquet, parquet boards and other wooden floors is carried out with an abrasive sandpaper, starting with a coarser sandpaper (large grain) and ending with a sandpaper with a fine grain. It is very important to follow the sequence in reducing the number of abrasive, since if one number is skipped, stripes from rough sandpaper may remain on the parquet. In the case of large differences between adjacent staves, or in the presence of a large layer of old varnish, scraping is started with zen R24 sandpaper. In this case, the angle between the direction of movement of the grinder and the direction of the riveting should be 30-45 degrees. The final sanding is recommended to be carried out along the direction of the parquet (floorboard) riveting with a sandpaper with a P100 (P120) grain.

Particular attention should be paid to the scraping of the parquet board. The useful layer is much thinner and there is a danger of completely scraping it. If the parquet board is laid in a “floating” way, then the increased vibration during sanding will lead to a strong “shot”, which will strongly manifest itself during varnishing.

Scraping floorboards has its own specifics. Scraping of pine, larch and other conifers is difficult and requires some experience due to softness and increased oiliness.
