Wooden floor bathrooms: What is the Best Hardwood Floor for a Bathroom?

Parquet & natural wood floors in the bathroom

Parquet & natural wood floors in the bathroom | mafi

The motto is oasis instead of bathroom, the purpose is rest and relaxation.

The bathroom is now more than just a functional space for personal hygiene. The average size of bathrooms in new private homes has doubled over the past 15 years. The bathroom has become an oasis, a place for rest and relaxation.

And this is where choosing the right flooring comes into play. Tiles definitely have their advantages, without any doubt. But coziness is certainly not one of them. That’s not the case with wood floors. Indeed, wood floors have become the latest trend in bathrooms and they do work,  provided you choose the right product and surface treatment.

Let us explain.

Wood floors in a bathroom? These two factors are decisive.

First, we have to start with the material itself. Wood is by nature a material that can absorb water and release it again. In times of high moisture absorption, the wood increases its volume; then its volume reduces when the moisture is released. These changes cause the wood to swell and shrink; if attached, this can cause the floor to move. This applies in general to indoor spaces, but especially in the bathroom.

So we find that the critical factors are the moisture exchange in the wood and the resulting instability. But by constructing wooden floors in a certain way, these two factors can be counteracted.

What solutions do mafi natural wood floors offer regarding moisture and stability?

mafi natural wood floors are naturally oiled and air-dried. This allows the wood to continue absorbing moisture and, just as important, release it again. Lacquered, waxed, or UV-oiled wood products can’t do this.

The second factor is how mafi limits the movement of the wood. The structure of the plank is crucial. mafi natural wood floors use a sandwich structure with the same wood in the same initial thickness as both the top and bottom layers. This symmetrical structure greatly reduces the swelling and shrinking behavior of the wood. In addition, the planks when used in bathrooms are glued to the substrate with permanently elastic adhesive.

3-D surfaces and real wood under your feet

In general, thanks to the symmetrical plank structure and the air-dried oil finish, all mafi products are suitable for installation in bathrooms.

The special mafi surface also offers another barefoot-friendly advantage over lacquered products and tiles. The oil penetrates deep into the wood and does not adhere to the surface. This keeps the wood warm and as pure as possible.

In addition, mafi offers special 3-D surfaces available on different types of wood. The texture “massages” the stressed soles of your feet and can be a real design feature in any room concept.

Wall, ceiling, and bathtub cladding

It doesn’t always have to be the floor. Wood generally creates a feel-good atmosphere and can also be used on the walls or ceiling. All mafi products can be attached using battens. If combined with matching flooring, you can create a uniform, coherent finish.

Bathtubs or small pieces of furniture can also be clad with the same material as the floor. It is important to keep the mix of materials small and to incorporate related elements repeatedly.

Rest and relaxation with materials that are good for your health

The bathroom as a place of rest and relaxation also sets new standards for materials and what they contain. The focus here is to create an indoor climate free of as many toxins as possible. Furniture or building materials may contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or formaldehyde that can be released into your space. It’s often the adhesives that are at fault.

mafi natural wood floors are VOC- and formaldehyde-free. Our adhesive consists of vinegar, water, and lime.

But our floors do even more. Not only are they free of toxins, they also have a positive and cleansing effect on the indoor climate. Once again, this due to their open-pore surfaces which allow the wood to regulate and filter the moisture in the room. Particularly worth mentioning here is the Swiss stone pine, the natural oils of which trigger relaxation and even save some of the heart’s work.

Care

Wood in its unadulterated form as found in mafi flooring is not a good breeding ground for viruses or bacteria. All you need to do is wipe mafi natural wood floors at regular intervals with warm water and mafi wood floor soap. This accomplishes both maintenance and cleaning in a single go.

The fat contained in the soap cares for the wood and strengthens the wood fibers. This means fewer dents or pressure marks. In addition, the soap has an antibacterial and antiseptic effect.

Bathroom Flooring: What Are Your Options?

Whilst you still need to consider common factors such as cost, durability and aesthetics, you also need to consider one enduring issue; water. So what are your best options when it comes to choosing the right wood for your bathroom flooring?

No other flooring in your home will have to tackle water quite like your bathroom flooring. You may have had the same thought process and considerations when choosing your kitchen flooring. However, where you’re likely to encounter the odd spillage in your kitchen, water is a recurring obstacle in any bathroom.

Whether you’re looking for a wooden floor or a tiled effect, there are options available to give you the desired look whilst protecting against moisture. In this guide, we’ll walk you through different flooring types and their suitability to give you the bathroom flooring ideas you’re looking for.

_

Luxury Vinyl Tiles

RECOMMENDED

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) is one of the toughest flooring options on the market.  Renowned for imitating high-end flooring to unsurpassed standards, LVT is the flooring choice for many homeowners. Water resistance is one of the many benefits of LVT Flooring.

When it comes to bathrooms, LVT’s durability makes it a popular option. Luxury Vinyl Tiles are water-resistant, and feel warmer underfoot than real porcelain or stone. If you prefer the style of a wood flooring, then you can perfectly replicate this look. LVT is compatible with underfloor heating, and the tiles are incredibly easy to fit using their ingenious click system.

_

Vinyl

RECOMMENDED

If you’re looking for a more cost-effective alternative to LVT, Vinyl Flooring will give you the desired look for less. Because it’s essentially one sheet of flooring, when sealed correctly around edges (and joins if you’ve got a particularly big bathroom), it will be 100% water resistant.

Aside from the low cost, vinyl’s appeal also draws from the huge range of styles available on the market. Because each design is printed, manufacturers are free to create unique flooring that separates itself from the competition. So when it comes to bathroom flooring options, whether you’re looking for a simple wood design, or something a little more outlandish, rest assured you’ll find a vinyl to suit your taste.

Engineered Wood

NOT RECOMMENDED

There is a debate that surrounds whether you can use Engineered Wood in a bathroom. We have previously advised it’s okay to be used in a kitchen (with caution), which can see fluctuating temperatures and moisture levels. Engineered Wood’s multiple layers make it more resistant to these factors than its solid wood counterpart. However, we also advise that all spills are cleaned up immediately to mitigate the risk of water damage. Whilst this is easy to do in a kitchen, it’s much less practical in a bathroom, which is why we don’t consider it one of the best bathroom flooring options.

If you are looking to lay Engineered Wood in your bathroom, you’ll need to choose boards with a thickness of 14–15mm to offer the most durability whilst still remaining flexible. Then, the flooring will need to be either lacquered or hard-wax oiled to increase its resistance to moisture. It comes down to personal preference, however the risk of water damage is still there – especially if fitted incorrectly. We’d therefore, advise you use a more recommended flooring type for your bathroom.

_

Laminate

NOT RECOMMENDED

Similar to Engineered Wood, there is a grey area when it comes to laying Laminate in bathrooms. Unfortunately, if moisture finds its way into the Laminate planks, it can completely ruin your flooring. Common entrance is through the plank joins. There are joint protectors available to seal the gap and act as a barrier for water, however, whilst effective for minor spillages this will not fully waterproof your boards.

You must also consider the possibility of leaks in your bathroom. Laminate (and Engineered Wood, for that matter) might work okay when exposed to small amounts of moisture. However, if you encounter a leaking bathtub or faucet, you could easily find your entire flooring is ruined. For this reason, we advise choosing a completely waterproof flooring option to avoid accidents becoming even more costly.

_

Solid Wood

NOT RECOMMENDED

Whilst Solid Wood Flooring is no doubt a desirable bathroom flooring option, it does not handle excessive moisture well. Compared to Engineered Wood’s multiple layers, Solid Wood is made from one piece of wood. Because it is a natural product, prolonged water exposure causes the wood to soak up moisture and therefore expand. This in turn can then cause your flooring to warp or buckle. We would strongly advise against using Solid Wood in your bathroom.

Bathroom Flooring Styles

Whilst you’re flooring options may be slightly limiting in terms of compatibility with your bathroom, let’s take the flooring types you can use, an look at some of the latest trends. So not only are you getting functionality, but style too.

Patterns

Want to add fun, style and stand out designs to your bathroom on top of that primary practicality? Then this vinyl trend is one you’re not going to want to miss. With a wide range of styles to choose from, vinyl can provide a focal point to your bathroom. These show stopping pieces make a great addition if compliments are what you’re after. Not only that, they come at a friendlier price point than most flooring types. Some call it cheap and cheerful, we call it style and sensibility.

Black and White Contrast

Another trend that has made its way back around is a black and white contrast. This is most commonly styled with a patterned flooring which is achievable with vinyl. However, other flooring types that are compatible with bathrooms such as laminate and EvoCore are available in darker tones, which can achieve this style.

Wood Floor in the Bathroom

Yes, a wooden floor can also be installed in the bathroom!

By continuing the wooden floor in the bathroom, a warm unity with the rest of the house is created. The wooden floor in the bathroom gives this space the often missing character. Enriching this with a wooden floor therefore provides a warm bath upon arrival.

Different patterns

You can choose from many different color options for the wooden floor in the bathroom, so there is always a perfect combination that fits the character of your home. The wooden flooring patterns that you can choose in the bathroom are very diverse. Common choices here are:

  • Herringbone
  • Chevron pattern
  • Planks

But in total we can install and deliver 17 different patterns to create an unique experience in your bathroom.

UNDERFLOOR HEATING AND WOOD IN THE BATHROOM

If you like to strive for a warm appearance, both literally and figuratively, we can also install floor heating under the wooden floor in the bathroom.
Wooden floors and underfloor heating are a warm combination for over two decades now. All type of underfloor heating systems are suitable to combine with wooden floors. With every system you’re chosing you have different benefits. We can help you with picking the right underfloor heating system for your situation.

Sustainable wooden floors

Wood is one of the few renewable resources next to cork and wool. This makes wood a more ecologically choice than, for example, tiles or PVC. As long as the wooden floor is in place, it stores CO2. Sustainable forest management ensures that future generations can still enjoy the forests and wooden floors.

Wooden floors, valuable for people and houses

In addition to the ecological benefits, wooden floors also provide economic benefits. Because wooden floors can be renovated over time, by oiling and/or sanding, they have a long lifespan and retain their value. As a result, the investment you make when purchasing the floor is an investment for life. Having a wooden floor in the house is also something that contributes to improving the value of your home.

Wooden floors, valuable for people and homes

In addition to the ecological benefits, wooden floors also provide economic benefits. Because wooden floors can be renovated over time, by oiling and/or sanding, they have a long lifespan and retain their value. As a result, the investment you make when purchasing the floor is an investment for life. Having a wooden floor in your home is also something that contributes to improving the value of the house.

Wooden floors and water

With some caution, you can apply engineered wooden floors in the bathroom. Laying a solid wooden floor in bathrooms is not recommended. Due to the large difference in humidity during and after showering, as well as the contact of water directly on the wooden floor, problems arise with the expansion and contraction of these floors.

Despite the fact that wooden floors must always be glued in these areas, moisture can still run between the planks. This has consequences for the quality of the wooden floor. The action of, for example, shampoo and shower foam also has consequences for the finishing layer. Because a weld edge of 15 mm to 20 mm also remains in the bathroom (all around) and this weld edge is normally covered with, for example, a cover strip, this finish will never be watertight.

  • If you let the wooden floor continue to the bathroom, this can extend to the space where you are going to shower. Showering can’t take place on the wooden floor.
  • You can enter the wooden floor after your bath and/or shower, without drying yourself off. You don’t have to be afraid of a water ballet.
  • The floor could even be mopped every day if desired.

What is a bathroom ensuite?

With an ensuite bathroom, the bedroom and bathroom are in open connection with each other. This can be done by removing, for example, a door or wall between the bedroom and bathroom. Placing the bath in the bathroom also provides an ensuite bathroom. To create unity and tranquility, you can opt for a wooden floor. The wooden floor is suitable for both the bedroom and the bathroom and can continue from one room to another. It is also possible to place the bath on top of the wooden floor.

Connecting a wooden floor to another floor type

A wooden shower floor is not a great option. In the wet cell it is advisable to choose a floor that is resistant to the amount of water and soap it must handle. Floors that are often used in the shower are tile and cast floors. Uipkes wooden floors can be seamlessly connected to these floor types. In the case of a cast floor, a minimum profile must be applied when the floor is cast. The tile or cast floor must be brought to the same height as the wooden floor. In this case, no sill or edge needs to be applied, which ensures a sleek finish. In addition, it is also possible to lay the wooden floor tightly against a shower tray.

Maintaincance

Maintenance is important to extend the life of the wooden floor, especially in a damp room. Periodically the floor should be cleaned with the maintenance products. In addition, depending on the use, the floor will have to be treated with oil again after 3-5 years. After this, the floor is protected again for the coming years.

How To Таке Care Of Your Bathroom Wooden Floors

Since the dawn of modern construction and building, wood flooring has been used, liked, and loved in many different interiors, no matter if it comes to a residential house or an office and commercial premises. Wood flooring is a popular choice for so many home and business owners simply because it brings a lot of benefits. It is a sturdy, durable, and lasting floor covering that is not only easy to maintain and practically keep flawless for up to a whole century, but also a very stylish, elegant, and beautiful choice. However, it wasn’t too long ago when people started considering the beautiful look and elegance of wood for their bathrooms too. At first, it may sound a bit too strange to you, after all, you know that wood is pretty sensitive to moisture, humidity, and temperature fluctuations so what is going to happen with such a floor once you install it in the only space of the house that is usually the most humid and wet. Well, wood floor professionals have the perfect solution to this dilemma and it is called engineered wood flooring.

Engineered wood flooring is the beautiful wood floor you will be able to see installed in many bathrooms of happy owners. Thanks to its specific construction of layers of plywood or other lumber material glued together crisscrossed, engineered wood is significantly less prone to the issue and imperfections a solid wood floor can experience when fitted in the bathroom. Because of their porous structure, real wood planks are easily affected by dramatic changes in their environment, including significant temperature fluctuations, high humidity and moisture levels.

While in most cases the planks, when exposed on such conditions, will expand and contract but be able to go back to their initial condition, there are many cases, especially with aged hardwood floors, when the planks get damaged, broken, unfixed, etc. and the finish of the floor can get damaged and chipped too. However, this is not going to happen when you have an engineered wood floor installed in the bathroom. Also, engineered wood planks are topped with a thin layer of hardwood called lamella that is available in different wood species and colours. This pretty much means that you can enjoy the real beauty of wood in your bathroom and still have your floor re-sanded and refinished whenever you feel like it needs some attention and care.

While the case with how to enjoy hardwood floors in the bathroom is pretty much solved, you still have to consider the fact that once installed in this humid and wet space, the floor will still require some more attention and maintenance, no matter if solid wood or engineered wood floor. Keeping in mind this important aspect will mostly determine your final decision.

What to consider with a wooden floor in the bathroom?

Here are the main factors to consider when choosing a real wood floor for your bathroom:

•    The Finish – Leaving wood flooring just as bare wood without any finish or with a worn-out old one is not a good idea, especially in the bathroom. Unprotected wood (which means without an even coat of finish applied) is very prone to the conditions in the bathroom and as a result, will warp, cup, etc. Wood is very absorbent due to its porous structure and it will be easily damaged by any spillage of water and other liquids. This is why a protective finish is a must and if your bathroom wood floor is pretty aged and worn, you should consider the re-application of fresh coats of finish. The most popular type of finish recommended for bathroom floors is polyurethane as it creates an invisible layer on top of the floor and works as a barrier between bare wood and the pretty aggressive environment in the bathroom.

The polyurethane finish and lacquer finish make it very difficult, almost impossible for other and moisture to penetrate and damage the wood, at least when maintained properly and not chipped. When it comes to the application of finishes over the bathroom floor, make sure that more than a couple of coats are applied for some extra protection and evenness. Oil finishes are generally not that recommended for bathroom floors. Although oil finishes penetrate the wood’s structure and ensure some additional protection from within, they are not that good at creating highly lasting and hard-wearing protection on top.

So make sure to invest your money into a finish that is hard-wearing, long-lasting, and designed for water-heavy environments. There are some finishes available on the market that are suitable for outdoor spaces and marine-grade, which can be a very good option for your bathroom floor. Others are designed for indoor spaces but also waterproof and suitable for damp and humid spaces.

•    The Wood Species – Some sorts of wood species are naturally less prone to water and humid damages and they are a good choice for a bathroom floor. Softwoods such as pine and fir are generally recommended to avoid them as they are more sensitive to humidity, moisture, and temperature fluctuations and wrap and cup more easily due to their less dense and more porous structure. However, some of the wood species suitable for bathroom wood flooring include teak, oak, cedar, cherry, maple, ash, walnut, hickory.

•    The Warranty – Not a single wooden floor is safe and guaranteed completely that no issues and fails will happen soon or later, not even the most expensive one, this is why we highly recommend you purchasing wooden floors only from reputable and reliable manufacturers and suppliers and only when a warranty is available. Most of the wooden floors you buy from reliable suppliers some with a set of warranty that guarantees a replacement of materials over a certain time in case of failure. However, wooden floors installed in a heavily damp environment such as a bathroom may be available with other sorts of warranties or no warranty at all so make sure to check that aspect before you invest your money. Always read your contract carefully and don’t rush a purchase, take your time to consider all aspects and cases possible.

How moisture can affect the hardwood floor?

•    Spills and Splashes – The first and most common concern of every owner of a wooden floor in the bathroom is how spills and splashes will affect the condition and look of the floor. There is no doubt, spills and splashes will happen in the bathroom, no matter how careful you are. Sometimes even rinsing your face and hands will cause some water splashing outside the sink and drops falling on the floor, not to mention using the shower and the bath. It is important to remember that no matter how fresh and strong your finish is, it will protect the floor to some extent but the rest is your job if you want to keep your floor in good condition for decades. First of all, try to really be careful and minimize the spills and splashes as much as possible. However, when spills and splashes happen, it is important to wipe the floor dry as soon as possible so the moisture won’t penetrate through the finish and affect the bare wood.

•    Sloped Flooring – It is very important to make sure that the floor and the subfloor are perfectly levelled before and after installation, otherwise you may stumble upon some issues. If the floor is not levelled and even, water and moisture will slide down towards the low areas and puddle. The puddles of water are damaging to the floor and will lead to many issues and problems that are complex, hard, expensive, and time-consuming to resolve and repair. Water puddles underneath the floor can even weaken the entire structural integrity of the floor, so keep an eye for unlevelled floorboards and have them repaired as soon as you notice the issue.

•    Lack of Waterproof Underlayment – One of the most important factors that affect the moisture levels of wooden floors is the subfloor and how low or high its moisture levels are. Especially when it comes to a concrete subfloor, moisture can be a huge problem and you should make sure that the concrete is completely dry before installing the floor. Also, it is important to have an underlay installed under the floor so it can work as a moisture barrier and protect the floor from water damage.

•    The Wrong Method of Installation – Generally speaking, nailing down the floorboards is not necessarily the best installation method for a bathroom floor. Glueing down or a floating method are more suitable since the nature of the nailing down method. By nailing down the floorboards directly to the subfloor the moisture barrier between the subfloor and the floor will be punctured and moisture will easily penetrate through it and affect the condition of the floor by making the moisture levels significantly higher.

•    Flood and Leaks – Flooding and leaks are, generally, one of the most serious threats when it comes to wooden flooring installed in the bathroom. The potential risk of leaks and water damage is pretty serious in a room with piping. So in case, a pipe starts to leak or you notice a fixture malfunctioning, make sure to treat and repair the problem as soon as possible to prevent more serious damage to the floor. Even if properly sealed and a high-quality wooden floor, leaks and flooding can damage wood in a very short time and destroy the floorboards to an extent beyond repair.

•    Staining and Damages from Products and Chemicals – We tend to use so many different products in the bathroom, all the variety of soaps, shampoos, hair masks, and everything else we use on an everyday basis. Also, there are the heavy-duty cleaning products and chemicals we use quite often enough to keep the bathroom sparkling clean. However, most of these products can easily affect the condition and appearance of your wooden floor and leave a permanent stain that is impossible to remove. Make sure to keep away acidic products that can easily penetrate through the finish of the floor and have an impact on bare wood. The same it is with the cleaning products you are using for cleaning wooden floors – you are looking for products with a neutral pH that won’t affect the condition of the finish and the floorboards.

•    Humidity – While we tend to pay the most attention to the damaging power of water and liquids on wooden floors in the bathrooms, we often tend to neglect or simply forget about the damaging power of humidity too. However, humidity can be as bad for your hardwood flooring if not even worse at it can penetrate to every nook and corner of the floor and even in between the finest creaks and scratches. Unfortunately, humidity can even attack the bottom of the floor that is impossible to control and prevent. While not as much humidity will penetrate through all parts of the floor and affect its condition immediately, with time the effect will accumulate and can be damaging, often beyond repair. So if your bathroom gets very steamy, make sure to consider all the options you have for improving the ventilation of the room.

•    Mould and Mildew – Mold and mildew are part of every bathroom because they love hot, steamy, and moist spaces. However, mould and mildew also love organic products such as hardwood and this is why they can become a serious problem when you have a hardwood floor installed in the bathroom. Once again, make sure to prevent the growth of mould and mildew in the bathroom by ensuring good and regular ventilation of the space. Also, you should make sure that the condition of the finish is ok and it guarantees enough protection and preservation of the bare wooden floorboards.

Prevention of serious damages – how to?

•    Regular and proper maintenance – Whenever you decide on having a real wood floor installed in the bathroom, you should be aware that it will require a bit more maintenance, attention, and care compared to the wooden floors in any other space of the house. Good maintenance and thorough care do not just include regular cleaning and thorough prevention from the most common issues and risks for the floor in the moist environment of the bathroom, but also regular re-sanding and refinishing services. Make sure to contact the sanding and refinishing professionals anytime you feel like your floor needs a refreshment of the finish. You can easily test the current condition of the finish by placing a few droplets of water on the surface. If the drops are quickly absorbed by the wooden floorboards, the finish requires renewal.

•    Place bath mats strategically – Do not underestimate the power of mats and how much they can prevent the floor from water damages. So make sure to place bath mats strategically under and near all places in the bathroom where spills and splashes tend to happen, this includes around the bathroom and the sink or near the shower.

•    Tile surroundings – Another good idea for preventing splashes and spills from damaging the hardwood floor in your bathroom is by installing tiles around the bath. Besides being very practical and functional, this can be also a great way to decorate your bathroom even more and make its interior more intriguing and stylish. You can play around with colours, patterns, and textures and achieve a really beautiful and unique style and interior.

•    Maintain all piping and fixtures – Don’t forget to not just regularly maintain the floor in good condition but also all piping and fixtures in the bathroom to prevent flooding, leaks and more serious issues and problems.

•    At the end of the day, consider your choice – Yep, it is easy to see why so many people love and enjoy hardwood flooring so much that they want to have it everywhere, even in the bathroom. However, not all bathrooms are suitable for such a choice. Heavily used bathrooms and bathrooms used by children who love to have fun and make splashes are generally not the most suitable space for hardwood flooring, no matter how high-quality the floor is, no matter that is engineered wood, no matter the protective power of the finish.

Why choose hardwood flooring for the bathroom?

It may sound like a lot of stress and hassle to have a hardwood floor installed in the bathroom but once you make sure to ensure regular and suitable maintenance it is not more difficult than having a wooden floor in any other space of the house. At the end of the day, the advantages of the benefits of having a real wood floor are more than the disadvantages and all the maintenance and care are worth it. The warm and cosy atmosphere that real wood floors create anywhere where installed is one of their biggest advantages.

There is no other flooring material that has the same beauty, elegance, and style of hardwood and no other material can achieve such a unique and inviting atmosphere. In comparison with the standard tiles that keep the space looking and feeling very cold and minimalistic, wood can achieve this homey and welcoming feel that simply makes you feel good and help you relax. Besides, real wood floors ensure a lot of functionality, lasting and hard-wearing power, durability, and stability. Once you make sure to maintain them properly and regularly, real wood floorboards can survive up to a whole century and still look and feel amazing.

So simply make sure to have a good cleansing routine with the right products, prevent leaks and splashes, keep the humidity levels in the bathrooms as low as possible with good ventilation, and, of course, always ask for professional help and assistance when you feel like your floor is in need of a bit of renovation and expert care.

The variety of woods:

Hardwood flooring is stylish and sustainable, comes in a variety of natural colors and doesn’t absorb dust or debris, making it easy to clean and maintain.

Wooden flooring is also a good choice for Kitchen, because this category of flooring rarely needs to be replaced.

Most repairs can be easily repaired by a professional.

Variety of colors, ranging from light brown to gray:

Undoubtedly wood is softer and warmer underfoot than tiles so it proves to be a more sophisticated material than the laminate flooring or vinyl.

Wood also adds a comfortable and livable feel to a space due to its warmer color palettes and natural essence.

She admits that liquids are enemies of wood floors.

“If left too long, the wood can swell or stain, so it’s important that spills are cleaned up quickly.”

Davis also recommends that you put a mat large in front of the sink.

Clean up any dirt as soon as possible.

Hardwood floors, when properly finished, are the ideal choice for Kitchen, however, in the case of a material that absorbs moisture, greater care should be taken with liquid spills, so you should clean up spills as soon as you notice them.

Small spills, noticed later, will not damage the hardwood floor, however, larger spills such as a machine leak ice in a fridge or a dishwasher leak will likely damage the floor, especially as leaks often appear under the home appliance.

The good news is that solid wood floors last for decades, even in the Kitchen, as they can be restored every 5 years and will look like new.

They give a warm look to the Kitchen and it’s especially good when the same floor is connected to neighboring rooms for a nice visual flow.

The possibility of repainting:

There are some sealants that can protect wood floors, however, there are limitations.

Sealants on hardwood floors, whether solid or engineered, are just sealed ‘finished’ on top as a protective wear layer.

Wood and water do not mix, so hardwood flooring cannot be 100% sealed it expands and contracts with heat and moisture.

As a general rule, she says, hardwood floors in Kitchen or not WC only face leakage problems.

If you live in a home with a wooden frame you would have a problem regardless of damage to the floors in a situation like this.

Often, water from one of these types of fixtures or appliances gets under the wood and doesn’t pick up until the floor has weathered or swelled. Back then, she says, the leak would damage other types of flooring.

2. The cons of wood flooring:

Hardwood floors are susceptible to warping.:

Due to its warping characteristics, hardwood and even engineered wood flooring products should be avoided.

They are prone to buckling and warping when exposed to moisture over time. Drips and leaks can penetrate even the best finished floors, especially around the dishwasher.

In addition, the Kitchens and bathrooms are high-traffic areas and as hardwoods wear out being scratched, water can get under the finish, causing unsightly stains in the wood’s grain.

Leaks are problematic.

If your dishwasher, toilet, fridge, sink or sewer pipes leak, flooring choice can have a huge impact on the extent of damage.

Wood floors can let water seep into their cracks, hide mold growth and warp after minimal exposure to water.

wooden floors they can be used in bathrooms, but with all the water we use in that small area, it would probably be best to avoid them.

Child splashes, leaks in premises, steam and other water problems are all set to damage the wood, especially if the floor has gaps. However, ceramic or porcelain floors that imitate wood are recommended for this area.

While they may not make us feel exactly like stepping on a floor like wood, they do give an illusion that the wood is there. There are already a variety of flooring styles and sizes for this purpose.

Think about the pros and cons of hardwood floors before installing.

Pay attention to wet areas, as wooden floors in bathrooms with bathtubs and showers in areas where they receive water are not advised.

For homeowners who want a wooden look without moisture issues, a waterproof floor is recommended.

Can You Put Hardwood Floors in A Bathroom? Yes, with these tips.

If you are considering laying down hardwood floors in your bathroom, you are probably wondering if it is possible and if it is even a good idea. The bathroom is one of the most humid and damp rooms in the house.

Can you put hardwood floors in a bathroom? You can definitely have hardwood floors in the bathroom. Extra care should be taken during installment. Additional maintenance is also required to help prevent the wood from being over saturated by the tub, shower or during a potential water leak. This type of work is generally best left to pros.

Any project that involves the bathroom tends to be quite a bit more involved. Let’s take a look at some of the interesting and important aspects to installing a hardwood floor in your bathroom.

Is it a good idea to put hardwood flooring in the bathroom?

This is probably one of the most debated topics when it comes to hardwood floors. The biggest issue most people have with installing hardwood floors in bathrooms is that there is a much higher risk of floor rot, warping and cupping.

What causes this risk? Water in your bathroom! There are pipes running to your sink, toilet and shower or tub. Every one of those pipes is a potential place for a leak to spring. The faucet in the sink, the toilet and the tub itself also pose risk to leaking.

While you can get damage from a leak even when you are home, the greatest danger is when you are away. A leak in the faucet or toilet can turn into a flood in the bathroom, or worse, if given enough time.

By taking good preventative steps, you can at least help reduce the risk of such an event. Let’s take a look at the most important aspect of placing a hardwood floor in a bathroom, the finish.

Hardwood flooring finishes in the bathroom.

The type of finish you have on your hardwood floors is extremely important when considering laying them down in a bathroom. In order to get a better understanding we need to take a look at the different types of common hardwood flooring you can use.

The first kind of flooring we will look at is engineered hardwood flooring. This is also called prefinished hardwood flooring. The concept behind this type is that the planks are all cut to a standard size and the finish is applied to them before they ship. You pull the planks out of the box, cut the ends off to size as needed and just plop them right in place. It’s a little more complicated than that but in the end, your floor is a bit faster to install.

Another kind of hardwood flooring to consider for a bathroom is natural hardwood flooring. In this instance, you do the same cutting and placing of the planks but this time you have to apply the finish yourself.

Professionals in the flooring industry mostly state that natural hardwood flooring is the way to go when installing it into a bathroom. Why do you suppose that is?

Engineered hardwood flooring in a bathroom.

The biggest down fall to engineered hardwood flooring is the way in which the finish work is done. Engineered planks do not get a finish once they are placed. They already have a finish. The problem this creates is that the gaps between the planks where you slide them together don’t have any sealing properties other than how tight they are together.

You might be thinking, “why not just make them really tight then?” The secondary problem that gets created is with the environment changes in a bathroom that occur, extremely tight boards are likely to start warping, cupping or bending in various directions.

In a bathroom scenario, this creates a perfect place for water to get between and cause all kinds of problem. First on the list is that it will get on the foundation flooring and over time cause it to rot out. The floor will get very spongy and could lead to it collapsing out. Not something you want to mess with!

Mold is also possible. You don’t even need to have a leak or spill for mold to start forming under engineered hardwood flooring in a bathroom.. The nature of engineered hardwood floors not having a top coating finish could potentially create mold simply from the humidity in the room. Shower steam is the biggest culprit. The steam gets in the seams between the planks and starts to build up over time.

Natural hardwood flooring in a bathroom.

By far, the most accepted hardwood flooring for a bathroom is natural hardwood flooring. The reason why it stands at the top is because of how you finish the project when the wood is laid.

The last step just before cleanup is to apply a few coats of a sealing product called polyurethane. Since you are applying it once the wood is already on the floor, the sealer gets into the gaps and creates a great seal. This helps to prevent any leaks or spills from getting any further into the wood.

A bonus to the sealing properties of the polyurethane, you can also add a texture to the floor to help make it less slippery when it gets wet. Just be careful not to add to much of the texturing. It can start to hurt bare feet when it’s walked on if there is too much. Usually a fine sand it used in this application.

Other considerations with hardwood floors in the bathroom.

If you are considering hardwood floors in your bathroom, there are a few other things you will want to keep in the back of your mind. First and foremost is what will end up on the floor.

The finishes of any hardwood floor, be they engineered or natural with polyurethane, are susceptible to chemical stains. Think hairspray, aftershave, toothpaste, shampoo and body wash.

Over time and if not properly and quickly taken care of, deposits of these chemicals can start to eat at the finish and cause the floor to be stained. This will create spots in your hardwood bathroom floor that look awful.

Getting a decent mat outside of the tub can also help prevent a good deal of water damage to the floor and reduce the amount of regular maintenance needed. Starting a habit of wiping your feet off before you get out of the tub is also a great way to prolong time between hardwood floor cleaning.

Hardwood floor maintenance in the bathroom.

Bathrooms are pretty close to the most unclean room in any house. If this were a race, kitchens and bathrooms would probably tie. Having a cleaning schedule for the bathroom is the best way to extend the life of your floor. Also, it helps to prevent mold, mildew and floor rot as well!

Good cleaning habits can help to extend the life of your hardwood floors.

It is recommended that you sweep a hardwood floor every day. Let’s be serious though, not many people have time to do that. In my house, I try to make sure I sweep the floors every weekend.

Every other weekend, I take the time to do a light mopping. Simply take 1 cup of vinegar and add it to a bucket full of water. 2 gallons at least. Get the mop only slightly damp and wipe the floor down making sure to get the tough to reach areas. Those harder to reach areas are where the most likely places for floor faults occur.

Keep up with this practice and your floors are sure to have a great shine most of the time. You will also have less of that gritty feeling on your feet. Socks will also stay dirt free for longer!

Final thoughts on hardwood floors in the bathroom

You can absolutely put hardwood floors in your bathroom. It’s just important to note that more care will be needed then say that of laminate. The hard work will be worth it in my opinion. Nothing makes a room look more warm and inviting than a quality and cared for hardwood floor.

Remember that when properly taken care of, natural wood flooring can last for a very long time before needing to be refinished.

Good luck with your project. Happy Flooring Day!

Bathroom floor in a wooden house: how to make it yourself

Wood, as a building material, accompanies a person throughout his entire history of existence. The wooden floor in the bathroom in terms of its operational properties and aesthetic perception surpasses all floor coverings made of artificial materials.

Not in vain, in the “correct” saunas, the floors are made only of wood. There is a misconception that wooden bathroom floors in wooden houses have a short lifespan due to moisture. In this article we will tell you how to properly make wood flooring in rooms with high humidity.

Woods for bathroom floors

Properly selected wood, well-made waterproofing – all this will ensure a long service life of the flooring in the sanitary room.

The table shows the most popular materials for wood flooring in bathrooms:

No. Type of wood Advantages Disadvantages
1 Larch Easy to work Requires additional waterproofing
2 Cork Non-slip surface Low wear resistance
3 Teak Waterproof Rarely seen in the market
4 Thermowood Plastic property High cost
5 Waterproof laminate – ” – – ” –
  1. Larch floor perfectly withstands conditions of high humidity. Spilled water does not adversely affect larch boarding.
  2. Cork flooring, in addition to aesthetic appeal, leaves a pleasant tactile sensation from walking barefoot on the floor in the bathroom.
  3. Teak has long been used as a shipbuilding material. Teak floors are expensive. But teak flooring will decorate the interior of even a small bathroom.

    Steam-treated boards are moisture resistant

  4. Thermowood – these are the same wooden boards treated with steam pressure when heated to 230 degrees. The result is a completely hydrophobic material. This is a new material and its initial price on the market is still quite high.
  5. Waterproof laminate – these are panels covered with vinyl. Vinyl flooring creates a continuous moisture-impervious floor surface in the bathroom.

Wooden floor in the bathroom

The principle of the plank flooring is that the boards are laid on logs (support bars).

Much depends on the type of foundation of a wooden house. Consider the option of locating sanitary cabins on the 1st floor of housing construction.

In private housing construction, bathrooms are often arranged on the upper floors.

The floor slab must be reliably protected from leaks in the event of an emergency.

In any case, a solid base must be provided under the bathroom. The base of the floor is prepared depending on the type of structure of the building foundation:

  1. Concrete grillage. In this case, the base of the floor already exists in finished form. It remains to proceed with the installation of floor structures.
  2. Open ground. The ground area is filled with sand 100 – 150 mm thick. Crushed stone is poured on top with a layer height of 50 mm to 100 mm. A concrete screed is arranged over the entire surface of the site.

It should be noted that the variants of the subfloor arrangement may be different in the sequence of laying the materials and the thickness of the layers. It all depends on the individual building conditions. It is important to obtain an even, solid base with a sufficient degree of bearing capacity.

Wood deck technology

A special aesthetics of the floor will be given by fastening with wooden cotter pins

To successfully complete the tasks, the following sequence should be strictly adhered to:

  1. On a clean, dry substrate, cover with waterproofing materials.
  2. Lay out hardwood logs. The step between the beams should be done from 40 to 70 cm.
  3. Distance between planks is calculated from the bearing capacity of the timber deck.
  4. The space between the joists is filled with insulation. As a heater, polyurethane foam boards have proven themselves well. The homeowner can choose any other material.
  5. Floor boards are fixed to the joists with nails or screws. In special cases, when the most aesthetic appearance of the floor is achieved, the boards are fastened with cotter pins made of wood of the same species.
  6. All joints, seams and attachment points are puttied with a waterproof composition with preliminary gluing with insulating tape.
  7. The surface of the floor is covered with hydrophobic varnish or painted with waterproof paint. For more information on how to lay boards on logs, see this video:

Features of fastening the boardwalk with cotter pins (wooden nails)

At the point of attachment, the board is drilled through and deepened into the support bar. A drill with a diameter of 6 mm is usually used. Wooden nails represent laths round in cross section. Cotter pins are cut to such a length that the top of the nail does not fully enter the hole.

The cotter pin must be the same diameter as the hole in the floor. Cotter pins are hammered with a wooden hammer (mallet). The top part of the cotter pin is carefully cut off. The place of attachment is cleaned with fine emery.

Types of waterproofing of the base of the wooden floor in the bathroom

The base of the bathroom floor is protected by two types of waterproofing:

  • pastings;
  • coating materials.

Floor pasting technology

Rolled insulation materials allow you to make floor protection from moisture in the form of a kind of waterproof trough.

Lay the layers of insulation overlapping

Rolls of insulation are cut into separate mats, which are overlapped with each other with an edge width of 15 – 20 cm. After that, the mats are stacked in order of priority.

Insulation cutting is carried out taking into account the installation of material on the walls to a height of 50 – 100 mm. The number of layers of waterproofing depends on the local conditions of the condition of the enclosing structures of the bathroom. Laying of mats is carried out on a heated mastic. Usually protection is put in 2 layers.

A cement screed is made over the insulation.

Coating materials

Coating mastic creates a continuous, seamless, water-repellent surface.

In the distribution network, waterproofing coating is sold ready-made in plastic buckets. Dry acrylic mixes are sold in plastic bags.

Safety

Bathrooms are usually small. The small volume of the room creates an increased danger to the breathing of workers when laying bituminous and polymer layers of protection. To heat the surfaces of pasting insulation, a building hair dryer is used.

How to treat the wooden floor in the bathroom in a wooden house and how to care for it

Due to the fact that wood is a natural material with a porous structure, it can serve as a humidity regulator in the bathroom. At a high level of moisture in the atmosphere, it will absorb it, and at a low level, it will give it back. But in order for such a natural regulator to work properly, the wooden floor in the bathroom must be treated with special means. Otherwise, dampness and fungus will appear. Let’s consider this question in more detail.

Wood Selection Guide

Although prone to microorganism damage, natural wood has a number of attractive properties for any owner:

  • Superb appearance;
  • Warm atmosphere of comfort;
  • Natural purity of wood material.

Wood is a very environmentally friendly material that can bring a note of comfort to any interior

Therefore, the only question is to choose the right type of wood. Moisture-resistant wood is needed for arranging a bathroom. The best options here are the following:

  1. Teak. Teak wood is widely known for its unique characteristics. This is a beautiful texture, grainy texture, as well as absolute moisture resistance. If the longitudinal veins at the joints are treated with sealant, then even ceramic tiles can envy resistance to moisture. The only disadvantage of this breed is its high cost. For the tree grows in South Asian latitudes.
  2. Larch. This domestic breed is practically not inferior to the previous version, since the high resin content prevents the penetration of moisture. Perhaps it is somewhat less beautiful, but this is offset by a more adequate cost.
  3. Thermowood. If the wood is treated with steam, it is possible to obtain a moisture-resistant and attractive coating. It is necessary to specifically choose the option designed for the bathroom, since it will already come complete with structural elements.

Preparatory stage

Waterproofing work is aimed at protecting the wooden floor from the harmful effects of moisture. They start from the installation stage.

When carrying out waterproofing work in the bathroom, it is recommended to lower the flooring level below the average for the house, and equip a decorative threshold. This will delay the leakage of water in case of force majeure.

At the first stage of arranging waterproofing, the wooden base is thoroughly cleaned of debris. Then impregnation with antiseptic compounds is carried out to protect the tree from mold.

In order for a wooden floor to please its owners for a long time, it needs careful maintenance. And only after that you can proceed directly to the processing of wood.

Waterproofing methods

Often, craftsmen use one of three technologies: coating, painting and gluing. Consider how to properly protect the wooden floor in the bathroom in each of these ways.

  • Coating. This technique is characterized by the simplicity of the process and excellent water-repellent qualities. Despite the fact that the solution can be prepared independently, ready-made mastics are often used. The bituminous mixture is applied to the rock surface in a dense layer (2 kg/m²) using a roller and a brush. The walls below are also treated with bituminous mastic, forming a protective “trough”. The procedure is repeated twice, with an interval of several hours.

Attention! The second layer must be applied perpendicular to the previous one.

There are several different ways to protect the wood floor

The bathroom is then left to dry for 24 hours.

  • Paint. This technology is considered more accessible to the consumer, but is short-lived. The painting technique guarantees the protection of the wooden surface for only 3-4 years. The paint mixture (as a rule, bitumen-polymer) is also applied using a roller. However, it involves not two, but three stages, which are stretched out in time. If between the first staining procedure and the second it takes three days of drying, then between the second and third – about a week. This is necessary to restore the natural properties of wood after impregnation. In order for the wooden floor to be reliably isolated from moisture, you can also use a safety net. Namely – to purchase soft linoleum.
  • Pasting. This technology involves the laying of multi-layer waterproofing. The use of rolled and various sheet materials is necessary to create a moisture-resistant carpet. Moreover, all work is carried out at high temperatures.

Attention! The thermal regime is the main condition for the application of this technique. Therefore, work should be trusted exclusively to professionals with tools and many years of experience.

Bituminous mastic is used to securely adhere this carpet to a wooden surface. It should be applied in a fairly thin layer over the entire plane (about 1.5 mm), after which rolls of bitumen-polymer materials can be rolled out. This procedure is carried out as many times as necessary to achieve the desired effect. After that, the edges of the bituminous material are treated with a polymer putty.

Proper care of a wood floor is the key to its long life

Tips for caring for a wood floor

There are many ways to protect wood from moisture. This is the use of various oils, waxes and varnishes. However, all of them are not suitable for use in the bathroom, as they violate the natural hygroscopicity of the material. Wood simply ceases to regulate the level of humidity in the room. Therefore, it is recommended to deal with high humidity by other methods. Arrange good ventilation, purchase a thermohygrometer. Constant monitoring of moisture indicators at different times of the day and year will allow you to determine the optimal microclimate in the room.

Thanks to the use of modern technologies for the processing of natural materials, wooden flooring is easy to imagine even in difficult bathroom conditions. The main thing is to choose the right type of wood, and then the bituminous solution of protective mastic.

Bathroom wood floor

The need for durable bathroom flooring is obvious, but not the only one. Moisture resistance of the material is considered much more important. From this point of view, the wooden floor in the bathroom is a beautiful, but controversial solution. The advantages of the aesthetics of the coating and its thermal insulation properties are not always able to cross out the arguments against its use.

Wood is an excellent building material. Natural wood is widely used in decoration. A room where the walls, floor and ceiling are finished with wood is certainly comfortable and aesthetically attractive. It is tempting to use the natural beauty of wood, combined with its low thermal conductivity, to build bathroom floors. Indeed, what is the problem, why does it even make sense to talk about it? After all, baths from ancient times were made of wood, and ships used to be made only from it.

Immediately about the shortcomings

Wooden floor in bathroom

There is some difference between the conditions in which the ship baths were and the intensity of use of a modern bathroom. A comparison with the lower logs of a hut without a foundation would be much fairer. Or remember what the wooden frames looked like when they were replaced with plastic windows. This should be especially interesting for those who have a bathroom on a wooden floor.

At the same time, the balcony door or window frame does not experience as many factors as the floor in the bathroom. A good hostess regularly changes a wooden cutting board, even if this device is made of solid wood and not plywood. The wood warps from moisture, and the operation of the floor in the bathroom is much more intense than that of a cutting board. At least puddles are inevitable. And only incorrigible optimists can assume that they will never have emergency leaks. When children are splashing, the comparison with leaks is not too much of an exaggeration.

The ease of maintenance of wood flooring is very doubtful, because it is not room parquet. The intensity of use suggests that the bathroom floor will someday get dirty with brilliant green, potassium permanganate, and iodine. And repeatedly. You will have to scrape off the top layer from the tree, but the stains will still remain. A shaving cut, or a nosebleed, or someone dropped a tube of cosmetics and then elegantly crushed it with their foot. The spots on the floor will be markers marking the details of the biography.

Advertising

Humidity and temperature fluctuations are a favorable environment for fungus and mold. You will have to cycle the parquet in the bathroom regularly. Blackness in the corners and joints in the bathroom is guaranteed. And the smell is inevitable. The tree absorbs all aromas, so the smell of the bathroom will be eternal. Or the smell of bleach. Children will definitely miss several times without hitting the toilet, which is more than likely.

Advice for those who dare

Tips for using wood in the bathroom

For those who are still not afraid of all of the above, there are tips on choosing the material. For example: a wooden floor in a bathroom is preferable to be made from ship wood. Sample Tips:

  • Larch bathroom flooring is the ideal solution. Relatively moisture resistant material compared to other breeds and relatively inexpensive;
  • Cheap materials to make wooden bathroom floors are oak, elm and ash. There are others comparable in price, but they will warp more;
  • The use of thermowood will slow down the growth of fungus. In addition, this material has good moisture resistance.

Reference: Thermal wood – wood treated with steam out of oxygen at a temperature of about 200 degrees.

Wooden floor installation

Tie

Bathroom screed installation

Unlike wood flooring in other areas, a wood bathroom floor should be installed on a well-prepared, level surface, such as a concrete screed. You can use other moisture resistant materials, such as magnesite sheets. Screed requirements standard:

  • The screed must be even, the differences – no more than one millimeter per square meter;
  • The screed must be strong;
  • The screed must have a uniform density;
  • No defects.

Important: When insulation is needed, for example, a bathroom in a wooden house, or just on the ground floor, then moisture-resistant materials are used: polystyrene foam, extruded polystyrene foam and others with similar properties.

Waterproofing

Waterproofing of joints in the bathroom

A modern bathroom on a wooden floor must be arranged with all necessary waterproofing work. Waterproofing roll materials are laid out on the floor so that they go onto the walls by about 15 centimeters. The point is to create a bowl with high sides from the floor in order to keep water out of the floors. For this reason, instead of rolled materials (fiberglass, rubitex, uniflex, etc.), coating waterproofing is often used.

To create a water-repellent mixture, there are special dry mixes, making mastics with a different set of components is a simple procedure. Often the finishing of the wooden floor in the bathroom is made using paste-like and liquid waterproofing. The liquid composition is applied with a brush or roller, the pasty composition is applied with a spatula. The paste-like mixture simultaneously performs the function of a screed. All types of waterproofing have their own characteristics, so when using them, you must follow the instructions for use.

Tip: When the bathroom is on wooden floors, there is a need to reduce the weight of the waterproofing elements. One way is penetrating insulation. Impregnation according to the mode of action differs from coating insulation. In a humid environment, penetrating waterproofing creates a structure with good vapor permeability, while being water-repellent.

Laying planks

Installing wood on the bathroom floor

Before creating the flooring, it is desirable to apply a layer of primer, the wood effect floor in the bathroom will then be finally ready for laying. Direct installation of parquet, or plank flooring is the final step. It is important to be careful. Work is recommended to be carried out slowly. Laying should start from the door, not forgetting about communications. When the work seems to be completely completed, it is necessary to check the absence of defects. In case of cracks or irregularities, the flaws are repaired, depending on the material chosen, for example, with wax paste.

Conclusion

Thus, a wooden floor can be arranged in the bathroom. Only there must be scrupulous adherence to instructions, absolute observance of technology with all possible care. Then, in the case of careful operation, a beautiful and pleasant to the touch coating can serve for a long time.

When a bathroom renovation is planned, each of us faces the difficult task of choosing finishing materials, incl. and for the floor. Today, there are a lot of possible options: from traditional tile to wooden or self-leveling floors. It is necessary to proceed, first of all, from the functionality, as well as from the planned design of the bathroom. What materials can be used for finishing the floor in the bathroom?

It is immediately worth noting that in difficult bathroom conditions, only those materials that are non-slip, easy to clean, hygienic and have a high level of moisture resistance can be used. At the same time, one should not forget about purely decorative qualities.

No. 1. Ceramic tiles

Ceramic tiles are the most popular material used today for flooring in the vast majority of bathrooms. Such widespread use is explained by a number of advantages of tiles:

  • the material is absolutely not afraid of moisture and does not absorb it, which means that it does not deform under the constant influence of water, mold will not appear on it;
  • hygienic coating and easy maintenance. Moreover, dust does not collect on the tile, since it does not accumulate an electrostatic charge;
  • strength and abrasion resistance. With these qualities, floor tiles are strikingly different from those used for wall decoration;
  • anti-slip properties;
  • fire resistance, as well as high thermal conductivity, which allows you to equip a system of underfloor heating;
  • huge assortment. Modern manufacturers offer tiles of different sizes and colors, with different patterns and ornaments, stylized as other materials, so you can always choose exactly the option that will best meet the design idea.

Among the shortcomings, one can note the fragility of the tile: if you suddenly drop a heavy object on the floor, then there is a high probability of damaging the coating, and replacing the tile will require some effort. The tile is considered a cold material, so walking barefoot on it will not be very pleasant, but there is a way out – the arrangement of warm floors.

No. 2. Linoleum

Many people are quite skeptical about the use of linoleum in the bathroom, and there are good arguments for that. But still, if you choose the right material and lay it correctly, then serious problems should not arise. Another thing is that not everyone succeeds in fulfilling all the conditions for proper installation, hence the sad experience. If you want to create an interesting interior in the bathroom and have a “warm” coating, you will have to take into account a lot of nuances.

Naturally, not any linoleum is suitable for a bathroom. You need to use a thickened moisture-resistant material with a relief surface so that the linoleum does not slip from moisture getting on it. It is better to refuse the substrate so that the linoleum is not pressed through and not torn under the influence of heavy objects. It is necessary to cut the material so that there are no seams in the places of possible water ingress, but it is still better to weld the joints additionally. It is better to use waterproof glue, and put the linoleum on the walls a little. If you take into account all these nuances, you can get a reliable and cheap coverage. Otherwise, very soon, under the influence of moisture, the material will begin to mold, and an unpleasant smell will appear in the room.

No. 3. Natural stone

Natural stone is rarely used for bathroom flooring, because this coating is quite expensive and often slippery. The advantages of a stone floor include:

  • a chic appearance that gives the bathroom a special pomposity and elitism;
  • unpolished porous marble is used most often, as it does not become slippery when exposed to water, unlike other types of natural stones, it is not afraid of thermal and mechanical stress;
  • strength and durability.

It is better to trust the choice and purchase of natural stone to a professional, since each slab of material can vary significantly in color and pattern, even within the same batch. It is the specialist who can successfully combine different tiles in such a way as to create an integral harmonious pattern, as holistic as possible in appearance.

The main disadvantage of this type of finish is the high cost. Moreover, if the stone includes inclusions of iron, then small areas of rust can form. It is better to check the material right away: take a sample in the store and hold it wrapped in a wet cloth for several days.

No. 4. Self-leveling floor

Self-leveling flooring is one of the most modern solutions for bathroom decoration, which can significantly transform the interior and turn it into an underwater world, a corner of a tropical island, when it comes to 3D floors. In terms of performance, self-leveling floors are an ideal solution for such premises. Among their main advantages are the following:

  • strength, durability, abrasion resistance and easy maintenance. Such a finish will last at least 15 years, and at the same time will not lose its original properties;
  • absolute resistance to moisture and various detergents;
  • resistance to high temperatures and temperature extremes;
  • high thermal conductivity, so you can install a system of underfloor heating;
  • excellent antistatic performance;
  • solidity, which affects both the appearance and strength, because there is simply no way for water to penetrate under the coating;
  • highly decorative when it comes to 3D floors. The floor may not have any color or pattern, it can be applied to any image that will look as realistic as possible.

But with all the advantages, it is worth noting some features of the self-leveling floor that must be considered when choosing such a coating:

  • high price of works;
  • the need to properly prepare the base, i.e. perform a concrete screed;
  • preparatory work for creating a self-leveling floor can take up to 4 weeks, but the process of creating a coating is not so long.

No. 5. Wooden floor

At first glance, it seems that using wood in a room like a bathroom is generally inappropriate. But if you understand this issue, you can come to the conclusion that with a careful selection of materials, you can organize a wooden floor in the bathroom and enjoy it for a long time. This option has a lot of undeniable advantages:

  • is a warm coating, because wood has a low thermal conductivity. Even without a system of underfloor heating, it will be possible to step on the floor in the bathroom comfortably;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • pleasant appearance that brings warmth and comfort to the bathroom, allows you to make it original.

There are also disadvantages.

  • Firstly, wood is quite an expensive finishing material, so finishing the floor in this way can cost a pretty penny.
  • Secondly, the fact that wood can absorb moisture and deform cannot be discounted. To avoid this, it is necessary to choose the most moisture-resistant wood species, which, by the way, were previously used in shipbuilding, as well as apply protective coatings for wood.

Teak wood is excellent. It has been used by shipbuilders for hundreds of years. Due to its dense fiber structure, the material becomes moisture-resistant and accumulates heat. In addition, teak has excellent wear-resistant properties, it is resistant to chemicals. The roughness of this type of wood makes the floor non-slip.

Today, thermowood is also often used for tiling in the bathroom. Such a material is obtained by treating wood with steam at a high temperature, up to 2500C, in the absence of oxygen. At the same time, moisture resistance increases significantly, the risk of deformations, the development of fungus or mold is reduced.

In addition, it is better to treat the wood with moisture-resistant compounds, and cover the finished floor with several layers of special yacht varnish.

No. 6. Waterproof laminate

Laminate, like wood, not everyone decides to use in their bathroom. But if you look into the issue, waterproof laminate is not the worst flooring for a bathroom. It is made under strong pressure, the material is well pressed, and the water absorption coefficient is not more than 12%. From above, such a laminate is covered with a moisture-proof layer, and all end parts are treated with wax.

This solution has a lot of advantages:

  • strength and resistance of the coating to mechanical damage;
  • ease of installation;
  • warm material surface, so getting out of the shower or bath will be comfortable;
  • excellent appearance;
  • waterproof laminate manufacturers typically promise material durability of 15 years.

And yet, even a waterproof laminate cannot compete with ceramic tiles or self-leveling floors in terms of resistance to moisture. Water can get into the gap and accumulate in the voids, so it is better to wipe all puddles and drops from the floor immediately after they hit.

No. 7. Vinyl floor

Another good finishing material that performs well in the bathroom. Such a coating consists of individual multi-layer tiles, or it can be sold in a roll. The composition includes vinyl, resin, plasticizers and stabilizers; quartz can be used in certain types of coating. Such material has been used for a long time, but if in Soviet times its appearance and quality left much to be desired, today these are reliable and attractive products that allow you to transform the bathroom interior.

Vinyl boards consist of several layers, one of which is decorative. With it, you can simulate any surface. On top of the material is covered with two protective layers that prevent abrasion. Depending on the level of wear resistance, vinyl tiles are divided into classes: for the bathroom, it is better to choose the most durable material possible.

Among the main advantages of this coating option, it is worth noting:

  • high strength. Even a heavy and sharp object that has fallen on the floor cannot damage the material;
  • waterproof. The material absolutely does not absorb moisture and does not deteriorate if water accumulates on its surface, but it is better to prevent moisture from entering the seams. That is why they are recommended either to be carefully sealed, or to generally choose a roll rather than a tile material;
  • easy installation and maintenance;
  • walking on such a coating is very comfortable, because the material is warm, pleasant to the touch. In addition, it does not slip, which increases your safety;
  • Huge variety of possible colors and textures. Such material can imitate almost any surface: from wood to pebbles, which becomes an advantage when creating an original interior;
  • excellent heat and sound insulation;
  • durability;
  • antistatic.

But even such an ideal, at first glance, coating is not without its drawbacks:

  • non-environmental, because the material is made from fully synthetic materials. When burning, the coating releases toxic substances;
  • if the material was used in rolls, then it will be difficult to repair the damage – you will have to redo the entire floor. With vinyl tiles, everything is simpler – it is not difficult to replace one element.

Finally

As you can see, there are plenty of possible options for organizing the floor in the bathroom. Today, there are several worthy alternatives to traditional tiled floors that allow you to create a stylish and practical bathroom. When choosing, pay attention, first of all, to the performance of the material, to ease of maintenance, and only then to decorativeness.

What to put on the wooden floor in the bathroom

One of the seemingly insoluble problems that arise when renovating a bathroom has always been and remains the problem of arranging the floor and flooring in the room. For a concrete base, the choice of flooring options is quite large, you can use traditional tiles or even underfloor heating, but what to put on a wooden floor in a bathroom, given the fact that wood and water have been and remain implacable opponents?

What should be the flooring in the bathroom

Almost any solid wood floor has a universal character, it can be installed in any residential building, be it a house or an apartment, a cottage or a guest house, except for the bathroom. Putting a simple wood flooring in a bathroom means it will rot in a few months. Therefore, it is necessary to change the structure of the floor, for example, laying an additional layer of plastic or ceramic on a waterproof basis, or using a material for a wooden floor that is not susceptible to the damaging effects of water.

But before laying decorative tiles or any other type of flooring, it is worth considering some specific qualities of a wooden base:

  • Floorboards that sag under human weight will need to be reinforced, even if plywood or OSB sheets are placed over them. The deflection may not be noticeable with daily use, but becomes apparent the first time you try to lay a hard tile;
  • A wood base is not the best option for a floor, besides the fact that it must be protected from decay, the structure of the material can change dimensions even with the slightest change in humidity, not to mention the fact that wooden floors can simply arch in a humid bathroom atmosphere rooms;
  • All of the above is a serious problem that has to be solved. For example, when arranging a bathroom in a wooden house, where there are no concrete floors, the floorboards lying on the beams are at best protected by a layer of basalt thermal insulation. In such conditions, it is not enough to put a waterproofing layer; it will be necessary to complete the entire range of protective equipment.

Therefore, no matter what material is planned to be laid on a wooden base, the bathroom floor must be protected from water by all available means, namely:

  • Apply a double layer of waterproofing;
  • Thermally insulate wooden parts from sources of water vapour;
  • Provide good ventilation of the subfloor, while the air intake should be carried out from the nearest dry room.

If you just put a decorative coating with waterproofing, then due to the water vapor accumulating in the space around the wooden floorboards, even under the waterproofing layer, the wood will rot and rot.

Tip! Instead of ventilation products under wooden floors, you can put a few kilograms of powder with good absorption of water vapor. This will help remove most of the water and protect the insulation from flooding.

It is the leakage of water vapor through the fillet welds that causes the rapid failure of the insulation. Paired with an absorber, you can safely put crushed expanded clay or even mineral wool. All this will make wooden floors not only durable, but also safe.

Strange as it may seem, but there is another way to save wood, for example, if you put a heating system in the base of the floor. Any warm floor on a wooden base in the bathroom can be used not only for heating, but also for drying part of the condensate and residual water on the surface of the floorboards.

Which of the modern materials can be put on wood in the bathroom

There are not many options for flooring that can be used in a humid bathroom atmosphere, as material manufacturers focus mainly on concrete bases, as the most common in modern housing construction.

If we exclude the most extreme method with the dismantling of wooden floors, boards and joists, it is possible to lay floor covering in three basic versions:

  • Screed on wooden bathroom floors and tile;
  • Install waterproof laminate or linoleum;
  • Keep the old plank version as the subfloor of the bathroom, on top of which lay a wooden board made of moisture-resistant wood.

Please note! The wooden floor, made according to modern tracing paper from traditional and new materials, has stunning beauty, while in terms of durability and consumer qualities it is not inferior to ceramics and plastic.

Wooden bathroom floor

One of the great things about wood is that it’s quite easy to make wooden bathroom floors with your own hands. Wood flooring is a little more complicated than conventional floorboards, but laying a floor in a bathroom is not difficult even for a novice carpenter. Therefore, before trying to lay cold and slippery tiles in the bathroom, it makes sense to try your hand at building a real sea deck.

Classic wooden bathroom floor

To avoid trouble with warping and rotting of wooden structures, the floor in the bathroom is made in the image and likeness of the structure used in the steam room of a bathhouse or the deck of a fishing schooner. In fact, the wooden floor is double:

  • The lower subfloor is said to be still wet and collects all the water, dirt and detergent residues on the bathroom floor;
  • The upper wooden floor should be made of water-resistant wood, preferably ash or oak.

Larch is considered to be the most resistant, but in practice there are not so many people who want to lay down and walk in the bathroom on a dark and not very beautiful coating, so bleached and tinted oak is best suited.

The lower draft floor must be thoroughly waterproofed. To do this, you can use liquid rubber as the first layer, or a special coating of butyl-styrene waterproofing used to insulate pool bowls, ponds and large concrete containers.

If the subfloor is made of boards, then before laying the waterproofing, it is necessary to sew the floorboards at the joints with nails or self-tapping screws, remove the paint and sand the surface with coarse sandpaper.

The base of the subfloor is impregnated with an antiseptic and dried thoroughly. If the base is made of concrete, then you will need to insulate the bathroom floor with foam plastic, put moisture-resistant plywood, install support logs for a finished wooden floor in the bathroom, and only after that apply the coating waterproofing.

After the insulation layer has dried, it remains to lay the top finishing floor. Boards pre-planned and treated with waterproof varnish are laid on logs on spikes or wooden pins. You can not beat nails or screw screws into a tree. Even if you put a layer of protective varnish on top, the attachment points will rust.

The result is a very beautiful and durable bathroom floor.

Bathroom floor wood finishes

The age-old problem of how and what to put on the bathroom floor can be solved in a fairly simple way. To arrange the most beautiful, warm and environmentally friendly coating, you only need to use special types of wood-based material or waterproof woods:

  • Larch;
  • Oak;
  • Ash;
  • Thermostated wood.

All of the woods listed are water resistant. It will only be necessary to waterproof the base with a coating of mastic and lay a thick plastic film. You can lay a wooden floor on slats or stick it directly on the base.

To prevent moisture from seeping through the joints, molten mastic based on pine resin is poured into the seams. Next, you will need to put a fiber cord in the joints and fill the seams with polyurethane varnish or epoxy glue. The service life of a wooden floor in a bathroom is at least 10 years.

Wooden floor and ceramic tiles

Wood flooring in the bathroom is not designed to take a heavy load, wood can only be put on the floor for large bathrooms, where there is good ventilation and airing of the room, ensuring effective removal of water vapor and surface moisture.

If the dimensions of the room are within 2×3 m, or the room is used often enough so that the moisture on the walls and floor does not have time to dry out, in this case it is best to lay a tile. Laying tiles on a wooden bathroom floor will require significantly more effort and expense, but it is the only way to make a bathroom floor more durable.

If it is important for the room to preserve the appearance of a wooden floor, you can choose and install porcelain stoneware tiles with imitation of parquet or floorboards. So that the seams do not give out the true origin of the floor material, it will be necessary to lay tiles with a seam width of 0. 5-0.8 mm. In this case, there will be an impression, like from real floorboards.

How to lay tiles on a wooden bathroom floor

The principle of arranging waterproofing under tiles does not differ in any way from the previous method, with the only difference being that two layers will have to be laid under the tiles. The main problem of how to make the base hard and flat can be solved in three ways:

  • Laying a self-leveling floor based on ready mixes;
  • Cement-sand screed;
  • Lay cement particle board.

Cementitious screed and poured gypsum-acrylic coatings are very easy to make, but their reliability for wooden floors is questioned by many experts. It is best to lay ready-made cement-bonded particle boards on waterproofed floorboards.

If it is planned to equip the room with a warm electric floor, then flat slate can be used instead of DSP. Today it is the most reliable and durable type of tile base.

The sheets must be laid in two layers, with the seams coated with a waterproofing coating. At the joints, be sure to put a sickle tape. A gap of 2 mm is left around the perimeter of the room, which is filled with polyethylene and filled with silicone. It remains to apply a deep penetration primer to the base and lay ceramic tiles according to traditional technology.

In a budget repair option, you can abandon expensive tiles and put linoleum or laminate with a waterproof coating on the wooden floor. The technology for laying linoleum does not differ from tiles, only instead of tile adhesive it will be necessary to use a melt of resin mastic. It is clear that for the bathroom it is necessary to use linoleums with a high surface density without lining.

Waterproof laminate allows you to completely imitate expensive types of wood, but in order to put it in a damp room, you will need to make insulation on the walls and fill the joints with a colorless waterproof varnish. A prerequisite for the preservation of floors is reliable ventilation, while the durability of the coating will be 30% lower than in the case of using ceramic or wooden floorboards.

Wooden floor in the bathroom – moisture resistant coatings and wood processing (115 photos)

Floors and walls can be finished with a variety of materials to meet the needs of the owner of the house or apartment. But there are rooms that have special requirements for the level of strength and moisture resistance. These, of course, include a bathroom, the floor in which must be reliably protected from the action of external destructive factors.

Article summary:

Benefits of wood floors

Wooden structures are not only original in appearance, but also able to create an atmosphere of comfort and coziness in the bathroom.

Among the many advantages of this material stand out:

  • natural finish;
  • environmental friendliness of the material;
  • low thermal conductivity;
  • tactile comfort in contact with the surface;
  • aesthetic appearance;
  • affordability;
  • ease of installation;
  • diversity in wood species, its color and texture.

All the advantages of the material can be estimated from the photo of the wooden floor in the bathroom. However, wood is a fairly demanding raw material.

It is necessary to choose only high-quality material and mount it correctly. Otherwise, there is a risk of deformation under the action of water.

Wood selection

There are many types of wood, but if you decide to make a wooden floor in the bathroom with your own hands, then you need to choose the most durable and moisture-resistant material. Teak is considered the highest quality and suitable for wet rooms. It has a high density of fibers, which provides almost complete protection against moisture penetration.

No special processing required. This tree uniquely combines mechanical strength and fastening properties with ease of processing. You can get a smooth surface after finishing, but the natural roughness makes the design safer.

If you are not ready to spend money on expensive teak flooring, then you can opt for larch. This wood is very durable and resistant to moisture.

Oak, ash or elm flooring is also a good option. This is an environmentally friendly material that is not afraid of moisture, which means that you can not be afraid of the appearance of fungi and mold.

You can decorate the bathroom with cork. This material, first crushed under production conditions and then pressed, forms the basis of the floor covering.

A cork can also be used for the top shell, or veneer and vinyl are preferred. This material is not only resistant to moisture and fungus, but also has excellent insulating properties.

A more modern method has gained popularity – thermal wood coating. This material is obtained by processing wood with steam at elevated temperatures – more than 200 degrees. Your floor will be reliably protected from moisture, fungi and decay.

If you are wondering how to make a wooden floor in the bathroom, then we recommend using our simple instructions.

When laying the floor after the removal of the old covering, care must be taken to clean the subfloor. Old tiles and adhesive residue must be removed. In this case, as a basis, you can use a concrete screed or logs made of wood.

It is recommended to use the first option, because design will be more reliable. It is important to comply with the following requirements:

  • free of cracks and deformations at the corners;
  • it is necessary to ensure the evenness of the subfloor, eliminate large differences – they should not be more than 2 mm per 2 m2 of area;
  • the density of the screed must be the same throughout the area;
  • , in order to guarantee resistance to loads, it is advisable to make the screed as strong as possible.

Sometimes it is advisable to carry out preliminary insulation. This is true for the first floors. In this case, thermal insulation materials such as polyethylene foam, expanded polystyrene or expanded clay can be laid.

Moisture protection

After a good leveling of the base, it is necessary to waterproof the wooden floor in the bathroom. There are three main ways:

Using roll materials, such as fiberglass, hydroglass isol, rubitex or uniflex. It is advisable to prime the surface of the base and glue the waterproofing material on top in several layers. It is necessary to cover not only the floor itself, but also partially lead it to the wall so that the edges of the material are above the horizontal surface.

Cast processing is considered the most effective. It can be carried out using cold or asphalt-polymer technology. Only monolithic surfaces with a rigid base are covered. Bitumen compositions are applied in several layers. Reinforcement can be made with reinforcement or fiberglass followed by a cement screed.

Mastic is applied by roller or brush. This is the easiest and least expensive option. But the durability of protection is not the greatest.

Laying work

After carrying out waterproofing measures, the surface must be leveled and primed in several layers. Then the marking and determination of places for communications is carried out. Before laying, the material must be held indoors for better acclimatization.

Boards begin to mount from the door. Fitting can be done with a mallet. The selected material will determine the laying technology. After all the boards are installed in the right place, it is necessary to check for defects and eliminate them. Wax and mastic will help in this, followed by grouting.

If you decide to mount on logs, then it is recommended not to fix them firmly on the base, but to use a floating approach. They must be laid on supports with the lag resting against the walls and with a gap of up to 10 mm on the sides of the timber. The fastening of the flooring is carried out using the “groove-comb” technology. On the logs, the boards are mounted with glue or nails.

It is also important to protect the new coating. To do this, it is pre-cleaned of dust. When choosing how to cover the wooden floor in the bathroom, it is recommended to use a special varnish. It is applied after thorough drying of the installed flooring.

The wooden floor in the bathroom is not only a tribute to fashion or the desire to make the interior unique. This is a high functionality and ergonomics, reliability and durability in operation.

Floor in a wooden house in the bathroom, recommendations for choosing

Wooden houses with outdoor facilities are a thing of the past. Inside modern buildings, comfortable bathrooms and bathrooms with ventilation and even underfloor heating are equipped. The flooring device in a wooden house is more difficult than in brick or foam block houses. But, subject to all stages of work, the bathroom floor in a wooden house will be reliably protected from moisture and will last a long time.

Wooden house specificity

It is desirable to plan finishing at the stage of building a house. Then, when laying wooden floors, it is possible to take into account the effect of dynamic stress, which will appear under the pressure of the bath filled with water. To reduce its negative impact, the distance between the wooden beams is reduced, a large cross-sectional area is used. The thickness of the floors is increased by about 25%. Such measures minimize the likelihood of fatigue of wooden floors and their destruction.

Floors typically consist of a rough plank base, concrete screed and finish. The implementation of the concrete screed is taken into account at the construction stage. At the same time, the beams are lowered down by at least 20 cm. The difference in level will make it possible to make a concrete screed and finish so that the final floor height of all rooms will be the same. If the beams are not lowered, then the floor of the bathroom will be higher than in others.

Screeding

Almost always, a concrete screed is laid for flooring. If during the construction of the house the beams were lowered, then its thickness will not affect the level of the finished floors. A layer of heat-insulating material can be placed on the beams. You will learn in detail how to pour the screed on the floor from our technology with explanations.

To increase the reliability of the floors, a sewage drain is additionally installed. It connects directly to the sewer and provides drainage of water that has fallen on the floor. The screed is poured with a slope of at least 1.5% towards the location of the grate of the ladder.

Low-quality or cheap pipes should not be used during installation, even a small leak can become a source of problems with wooden floors over time.

If it is not planned to pour a screed, then cement-bonded particle boards, sheets of moisture-resistant gypsum fiber or moisture-resistant plywood are laid on the surface of the subfloors in two layers. Also for these purposes, you can use slate.

The process of laying screed in a wooden house

Why you need base waterproofing

A reliable waterproofing device will serve to protect the wooden base from moisture and prevent the damage to the beams by microorganisms, their decay. In addition to the floor insulation, the walls must be insulated to a minimum height of 20 cm from the lower level.

To waterproof a bathroom in a wooden house, you can use coating or gluing insulating materials. Their effectiveness is the same, only the methods of application differ.

Roll insulation

Roll materials are a film or fabric base impregnated with a special insulating compound. The cheapest are roofing felt and roofing material, but they have a short service life. Laying roll-type waterproofing materials is more difficult and takes more time. However, construction work can be continued the very next day after the installation of the insulation. The most modern materials are isoelast, mostoplast, ecoflex, isoplast. The laying process begins with preparatory work: drying the subfloor, priming. As a result of using rolled insulation, the level rises by 0.3-0.5 cm.

The fastening of the material occurs due to the adhesive layer. Self-adhesive materials are produced. During installation, the protective film is removed, and the insulator is glued to the base. Fused insulators are another type. Their installation takes place under the influence of high temperatures, a gas burner is usually used. The adhesive layer applied to the insulator melts and the material is attached to the base. The device of floating waterproofing is more difficult and requires certain skills.

During installation, the rolled insulator is attached with a construction stapler or welded onto the bottom of the wall. In this case, it is imperative to overlap the joints of the lower canvases with the top layer.

Insulation with coating materials

Coating materials, unlike bitumen-based roll coatings, do not have an unpleasant odor. It is easier to waterproof the floor in a wooden house with such compositions, they are resistant to high temperatures and aggressive environments, and have high adhesive properties. Several types of coated insulators are produced:

  • bituminous compounds for hot or cold application. For laying hot coatings, they are heated to 160 ° C, installation requires skills. Cold coatings are easy to lay, but they should not be in direct contact with acid-base environments, which include the concrete base;
  • bitumen-polymer insulators include latex-based fillers, plasticizers, solvents with organic components. Additives allow you to lay the composition on any base without heating. The result is a heavy-duty insulating layer;
  • polymer-cement insulators adhere well to the substrate due to their high cement content. Polymers provide the plasticity of the waterproofing layer and its stability;
  • acrylic formulations are available as water-based emulsions. They are environmentally friendly, do not have an unpleasant odor. The coating is characterized by strength and ductility, but the cost of the material is high.

Liquid waterproofing Stucco waterproofing

Coating materials can be applied in two coats to improve the quality of the waterproofing.

Application of underfloor heating system

Inside the bathroom in a wooden house, if desired, you can install a system of underfloor heating. If the option of electric floors is chosen, then more often than others they mount the system on an infrared film. In this case, it is not even necessary to fill the screed.

Scheme of underfloor heating system

When choosing water floors, the floor installation method is preferable. Special floor mats made of expanded polystyrene are placed on the prepared base, then pipes are laid in them. Next, the flooring system is covered with sheets of moisture-resistant drywall. The resulting design will serve as the basis for finishing.

In addition to ensuring a comfortable temperature in the room, communications can be hidden in the underfloor heating system. Any moisture-resistant materials can be used as finishing materials: linoleum, ceramic tiles, moisture-resistant laminate.

Underfloor heating

Wood

Wooden floors are not common in bathrooms. This is due to the fact that under the influence of moisture, the tree is affected by fungus and rots, and also when the humidity level changes, the coating is mobile. Therefore, only certain types of materials can be used for wood flooring: larch or teak.

Teak wood is used in the construction of ships, due to the high oil content, it does not come into contact with water. To seal the seams of the coating between teak boards, ship sealant is used. However, the cost of materials is very high, which limits the possible circle of consumers. Larch wood is also not affected by moisture. But the cost of larch materials is significantly less than the cost of teak boards.

An alternative is to use “thermalwood”. To obtain it, wood is treated with hot steam without oxygen at a temperature of up to 240 ° C. The material treated in this way is resistant to rot and fungus, does not warp when wet, practically does not absorb water. You can make wooden floors without pouring the screed, immediately on top of the waterproofing layer.

Laminate

Laminate is a floor covering that imitates wood flooring. The cost of a laminate depends on the wear resistance class. Expensive types of material have a presentable appearance, undemanding maintenance, durable.

However, under conditions of high humidity, even a high-quality laminate without a waterproof coating will quickly deteriorate. Therefore, in a bathroom in a wooden house, you can only purchase a moisture-resistant laminate with high wear resistance.

Linoleum

Linoleum is the most economical flooring option. Moisture resistant material has a long service life, low flammability. Many colors of linoleum are produced, but in the bath of a wooden house it is better to choose a pattern that imitates the boardwalk. Linoleum from commercial series will have greater wear resistance.

Laying material is carried out on top of the waterproofing layer. With a significant area of \u200b\u200bthe room in a wooden house, the joints of linoleum are spliced by hot welding.

Ceramic tiles

The use of tiles to finish the bathroom in a wooden house is the most common option. Ceramic tile has an attractive appearance, affordable price, low maintenance, impact and scratch resistance, and goes well with underfloor heating systems. A large selection of tile colors allows you to choose the option imitating wood.

Laying tiles on the floor must be done only on a concrete screed as an inactive base. Do not use wood or OSB boards as a base. The reduction in the distance between the beams and the reduction in the level of their location, provided for during construction, allows laying tiles without raising the level of the floors relative to other rooms. Bathroom floors, equipped with all the recommendations, will not limit the choice of design and will not provoke any problems during operation.

Modern bathroom floor design in a wooden house

Modern wooden houses are very popular among connoisseurs of natural materials. Today’s wooden structures are equipped with comfortable bathrooms, toilets, and heated floors. In such houses, laying the floor is more difficult than in structures made of other materials. However, if all the stages of arranging the floor are correctly observed, then it will not deteriorate under the influence of a humid environment, and will serve for a long time.

Bathroom floor can be made from different materials to meet the needs of homeowners

Any material can be used for laying the floor covering, in various color variations. The bathroom with wooden floor looks especially good. Instead of wood, a laminate is used that imitates a wood pattern. You can also use the most democratic of all options – linoleum.

Bathroom flooring must meet certain requirements. It should be moisture resistant in case a lot of water spills on it. Thus, moisture will not enter the lower floor. When laying a laminate board or a plastic floor, you need to make sure that water does not pass between the floors and into the structure itself.

It is advisable to plan the finishing of bathrooms at the stage of building a house, then you can correctly calculate and lay wooden floors

It is better to give preference to flooring options that have a high resistance to damp environments. In new homes, it is worth using chipboard and plasterboard flooring. The flooring must be durable and withstand heavy loads from plumbing that will affect it.

When arranging a new floor after a rough finish in a new house, it is advisable to cover a little lower than in other rooms. This is necessary so that water does not flow into other rooms in case of flooding. It is better to make the floor at an angle to drain water into the sewer. As a rule, the floors consist of flooring in the form of boards, concrete screed and topcoat.

Features of choosing a floor for a bathroom in a wooden house

The modern market provides a huge selection of materials for finishing, which makes it possible to equip the flooring in the bathroom in any way. This room has a high level of humidity, according to this, you need to choose materials for the floor. When choosing a floor covering, you need to consider what properties a particular coating has, as well as the features of its installation.

The bathroom is that room in the house, the repair of which is not worth saving much

For a bathroom it is better to install a floor with a minimum number of joints. This is necessary to reduce the risk of swelling of the material, as well as to avoid the development of pathogenic microorganisms (fungus, mold).

Ceramic tiles

are ideal for this flooring.

Color must match the rest of the finish. If the walls are made in blue, then it is better to make the floor dark blue.

You can also choose contrasting solutions – blue rubber floor and white tiles on the walls

Bathtub in a contemporary home with ceramic floors to match the wall finishes

Brutal bathroom interior in Alpine chalet style

There are many types of floor finishing materials that allow you to successfully decorate the flooring. It is selected based on such parameters as pricing policy, anti-slip properties, moisture resistance. With all these points in mind, you can choose the most suitable option for arranging the floor.

Wooden floor

This material is used less and less in the arrangement of floors, but it is one of the best. Wood is an environmentally friendly material, therefore it does not harm human health. Many do not dare to make such a choice, since wood is not cheap and is afraid of moisture. However, few people know that with the choice of high-quality material and proper processing, such flooring will last a long time.

The wooden surface looks original and creates a comfortable and cozy atmosphere

A good option would be larch, as it is a moisture resistant material. In addition, the plank floor is durable and has a beautiful aesthetic appearance. Teak is a moisture-resistant type of wood, since it is it that is used for the construction of ships. The composition of such wood contains oil, which repels moisture, preventing it from penetrating into the material.

Teak is the most suitable wood for flooring in wet areas

Larch is the choice of those who are not ready to spend money on expensive teak flooring

A good option would be to use oak, elm or ash for the flooring

Considered the most common type of flooring in the bathroom. It has high moisture-resistant characteristics, provides reliable sealing, preventing water from penetrating to the lower floor. It is also resistant to chemical and mechanical damage. It is better to choose a ribbed surface option, as this will provide safety and stability in large amounts of water.

Ceramic tiles are mechanically resistant, non-absorbent and impervious to water

Ceramic coating is easy to clean and does not cause problems during operation

Tile allows you to cover in any color palette. Popular colors are blue and brown. When choosing a material, give preference to porcelain stoneware, because it is stronger and more resistant to mechanical stress. Since such a floor will be cold, it makes sense to equip it with a floor heating system.

It is considered a reliable material, while its price is quite democratic. This material does not require special care. Linoleum is easily laid on the finished base, even without the involvement of specialists. For the bathroom, it is better to give preference to a material that is resistant to moisture and a corrugated coating. With such a floor, water must be avoided in the layers, otherwise fungus may develop there. For high-quality sealing of a part of the linoleum flooring, it is necessary to glue and process the joints with a sealant. Under it you need to put chipboard.

Putting linoleum on the bathroom floor is worth it only on a limited budget

Linoleum can be plain, patterned or imitation of a natural finish – wood, ceramic or stone

Despite its high sensitivity to moisture, laminate is actively used for flooring in the bathroom. To extend the service life, it is better to choose a moisture-resistant type of this material and keep it dry. It will be enough to wipe from the water with a dry cloth. In this room, the laminate will look very impressive, besides, it is easy to install. For these purposes, choose black, brown or white elements. To make the floor even, it is necessary to put chipboard or plywood on the base.

Special adhesive plug, varnished

Cork flooring has a pleasant tactile quality. It is very easy to care for, as it is easily cleaned by any means. Do not use harsh abrasive materials.

Cork flooring is environmentally friendly and absolutely safe to use

Cork can be laid in any room, especially since modern cork coatings are moisture resistant, therefore they are even suitable for the bathroom. To date, there are two types of cork flooring: adhesive and castle. The glue plug is varnished in several layers. This serves as protection for the floor from various damages, including from water.

Glue plug can be laid directly on a flat concrete base or on a plywood backing

Castle is varnished with a thin layer, therefore it does not guarantee protection against various mechanical influences. This type of surface is easy to install. The plates are connected on the floor according to the lock principle. This technology has a significant disadvantage – water gets into the joints, which leads to the rapid destruction of the material. Such seams must be treated with sealants that will not let moisture into the cork layers. It is worth remembering that if one plate is damaged, the entire surface will have to be disassembled.

Interlocking cork panels are not fixed directly to the floor, but are simply laid down like a laminate

The adhesive type of the floor is suitable for installation in the bathroom, kitchen, hallway – wherever there is high humidity and other pollution. Such plates are easily removed, so replacing a damaged element will not be difficult at all.

Cork flooring keeps the bathroom warm, eliminating the need for underfloor heating

All floor coverings are priced differently, with cork being the most expensive. In addition to the price, the cork has the following disadvantages:

  • The cork base must be perfectly flat, clean and dry;
  • material is not able to withstand high mechanical loads, therefore it is easily damaged;
  • requires careful maintenance – cleaning from dirt, as particles can clog into the pores of the surface.

Cork is highly slip resistant – even if the floor gets wet it will not be slippery

Is it possible to make a warm floor in the bathroom of a wooden house

Underfloor heating can be laid in wooden houses, and this is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. It is important to plan everything in advance and correctly complete all stages of laying the structure.

When the house is under construction, it is better to use metal beams instead of wood. The floor is then filled with concrete. With this design, you can lay any material for flooring. This design is suitable only for the bathroom located on the 1st floor.

Reinforcement of the floor under the screed with metal mesh

Pouring a concrete base 4-5 cm thick

This design is not suitable for the second floor. Here you need to equip a flat and solid foundation. The screed must be arranged throughout the floor. Due to its large weight, it is necessary to calculate the load on the beams. If the mixture is not properly distributed, then the whole structure may fail.

If ceramic tiles are used as flooring, the spacing between the beam elements must be respected. It is also worth lowering the overlap level by 10 cm.

Wood based floor waterproofing device

To install underfloor heating, do the following:

  • clean the ceiling from dirt and debris;
  • putty all existing irregularities and gaps;
  • put pine guide rails;
  • fasten to the surface with self-tapping screws;
  • then the heat-insulating material is laid;
  • then galvanized mesh and cable parallel to the bars;
  • at the intersection of the cable and beams, cuts are made and deepened to the thermal insulation layer;
  • foil is inserted into the cuts;
  • cable and bars are fastened with mounting tape.

Underfloor heating in a bathroom in a wooden house makes it possible to use it as the main source of heat at low temperatures. This solution will allow you to comfortably walk on the floor, especially if ceramic tiles are used as a coating.

You can carry out the installation yourself if you have a certain skill. If necessary, it is worth contacting a specialist so that when laying a warm floor, all stages of work are observed.

The arrangement of a bathroom in a wooden house usually raises a number of questions from novice masters. The main difficulty lies in protecting the floor surface from moisture, which, as you know, wood does not tolerate. Below we will look at how to properly waterproof wooden floors in the bathroom, and finish them with a top coat.

Tiled bathroom floor in a wooden house

General

The bathroom is one of the wettest rooms in the house. Therefore, the finishing of its surfaces, including the floor, requires careful waterproofing.

As for the top coat, the best option is a concrete screed on which ceramic tiles are laid. Since the rough floor in the bathroom is made of wood in wooden houses, the screed is poured using a special technology.

This is due to the fact that wood changes its volume as a result of changes in temperature and humidity, while the concrete slab remains practically motionless. As a result, when pouring the screed directly onto the floor, it soon begins to crack, and besides, wood does not tolerate contact with moisture.

Waterproofing films

Laying tiles

Floor preparation and waterproofing

So, the first step is waterproofing the wooden floor in the bathroom – the following materials can be used for this:

  • PVC film;
  • Polyethylene film.

Bituminous mastics and liquid rubber compounds should not be used, as the concrete floor and the wooden floor must be independent of each other. This condition can be provided only by the film.

The process of waterproofing the floor includes its preparation.

This work is carried out in the following order:

  • If the floor is not new, then it is necessary to carefully examine it and, if necessary, replace the damaged boards. If the floor sags, then you definitely need to disassemble it and install additional logs.
    All wobbly and creaking boards must be carefully secured to the joists. Moreover, the heads of nails and self-tapping screws must be deepened flush.
  • Gaps between planks should be sealed with silicone sealant.

Antiseptic impregnation

  • Next, the floor surface must be treated with an antiseptic agent, which will prevent mold and fungal damage to the wood.
  • On the perimeter of the room in the corners, you need to stick a damper tape made of polyethylene foam with your own hands.
  • The floor must then be covered with waterproofing foil overlapping. The joints should be glued with tape. In this case, the film should go on the walls by at least 10 cm.

Please note!
The waterproofing of the floor must be airtight, so during the installation of the film it is necessary to ensure that there are no punctures, cuts or other defects on it.

This completes the waterproofing of the wooden floor in the bathroom.

An example of installed beacons for screed

Installation of beacons

To make the floor in the bathroom in a wooden house smooth, it is necessary to install guides before pouring concrete.

This is done as follows:

  • Before installing the beacons, it is necessary to draw a floor level along the perimeter of the walls.
  • Then, near two opposite walls, guides are installed, which should be located at the level of the future floor. For their installation, lumps of cement should be used, on top of which a metal profile is laid.
    To make it easier to adjust the position of the rails, you can screw into the floor with self-tapping screws on both sides of each rail. After that, to adjust the position of the beacon, you only need to screw or unscrew one of the screws.
  • The position of the rails after installation must be checked with a spirit level.
  • Then, threads are pulled between the extreme guides and intermediate rails are installed along them. In this case, the position of all beacons is also checked by the level.

Please note!
Laying a reinforcing metal mesh on the floor, as when pouring a conventional screed, is not worth it, as it can damage the waterproofing.
Instead of mesh, the reinforcement should be made with a special fiber that is added to the concrete composition.

In the photo – reinforcing fiber

Pouring the screed

After completing all the preparatory work, the screed is poured. To do this, you must first prepare a solution of the following ingredients:

Components Quantity
M300 cement 1 part
Fiber 800 g
River sand 3 parts

All components must be stirred until a homogeneous mass of creamy consistency is formed.

Screed execution scheme

Instructions for pouring are as follows:

  • First, the span farthest from the entrance to the room is poured and leveled with a rule, which is drawn along the guides as shown in the diagram.
  • Then all other spans are filled in the same way.
  • After the concrete has set, the beacons are dismantled and the traces are sealed with mortar.

Please note!
For the first few days, the surface of the screed must be moistened to avoid cracking.

Laying tiles

Installing tiles

Once the screed has been completed, you can start finishing the floor.

This operation is carried out in the following sequence:

  • The prepared floor must be treated with a primer.
  • A special moisture-resistant adhesive is then applied to the floor.
  • Next, the tiles are laid, after which their position is checked by a level. If necessary, the position of the tiles is adjusted.
  • Special crosses are then installed to ensure a uniform thickness of the seams.
  • Further, according to this scheme, the entire floor is tiled.
  • After a day, when the glue hardens, grouting is performed. To do this, use a special moisture-resistant grout mixture or silicone sealant, which must be used to fill the seams.
  • At the end of the work, the tiles must be cleaned of dirt.

Tip!
The floor under the bathtub in a wooden house may not be tiled if the space between the bathtub and the floor is hidden.

This completes the process of laying tiles on a wooden floor.

Other materials

Tiles are not the only material that can be used in a wooden house bathroom. Often use linoleum in the bathroom on a wooden floor. True, it should be borne in mind that not every type of linoleum can be used for these purposes.

Coated linoleum floor in the bathroom of a wooden house

Experts recommend laying homogeneous types made of PVC. Moreover, linoleum should be laid in one sheet and go under the plinth. In this case, the joints of the skirting board with linoleum and the wall should be treated with silicone sealant.

If one sheet cannot be laid, the joints must be brazed. These procedures are necessary so that moisture does not get under the linoleum.

Tip!
When laying linoleum, you can not perform a screed, but use sheets of wood plywood for leveling.

Liquid coatings based on rubber are also suitable for finishing the floor, which, after hardening, form a rubberized surface. True, for the application of such compounds often require special equipment. But the price of the material is much lower than ceramic tiles. In addition, the rubber coating is quite practical and durable.

Conclusion

When arranging the floor of a bathroom in a wooden house, the most important thing is to exclude the contact of wood with moisture. The best option in this case is to perform a screed over waterproofing and laying tiles. However, there are alternative finishes such as linoleum or rubber flooring.

Contents of the article

#1. Ceramic tile

Ceramic tile – is the most popular material , which is used today for flooring in the vast majority of bathrooms. This widespread prevalence is explained by a whole a number of tile advantages:

  • the material is absolutely not afraid of moisture and does not absorb it, which means that it does not deform under the constant influence of water, mold will not appear on it;
  • Hygienic coating and easy maintenance. Moreover, dust does not collect on the tile, since it does not accumulate an electrostatic charge;
  • strength and abrasion resistance. With these qualities, floor tiles are strikingly different from those used for wall decoration;
  • anti-slip properties;
  • fire resistance, as well as high thermal conductivity, which allows you to equip a system of underfloor heating;
  • huge assortment. Modern manufacturers offer tiles of different sizes and colors, with different patterns and ornaments, stylized as other materials, so you can always choose exactly the option that will best meet the design idea.

Among the disadvantages of , one can note the fragility of the tiles: if you suddenly drop a heavy object on the floor, then there is a high probability of damaging the coating, and replacing the tiles will require some effort. The tile is considered a cold material, so walking barefoot on it will not be very pleasant, but there is a way out – the arrangement of warm floors.

#2. Linoleum

Many people are rather skeptical about the use of linoleum in the bathroom, and there are weighty arguments for that. But still, if choose the right material and lay it correctly, then serious problems should not arise. Another thing is that not everyone succeeds in fulfilling all the conditions for proper installation, hence the sad experience. If you want to create an interesting interior in the bathroom and have a “warm” coating, you will have to take into account a lot of nuances.

Naturally, not just any linoleum is suitable for a bathroom. It is necessary to use thickened moisture-resistant material with a relief surface so that the linoleum does not slip from moisture on it.

#3. Natural stone

Natural stone is rarely used for bathroom flooring, because this coating is quite expensive and often slippery. The advantages of a stone floor include:

  • a chic appearance that gives the bathroom a special pomposity and elitism;
  • unpolished porous marble is used most often, as it does not become slippery when exposed to water, unlike other types of natural stones, it is not afraid of thermal and mechanical stress;

The main disadvantage of of this type of finish is high cost of . Moreover, if the stone includes inclusions of iron, then small areas of rust can form. It is better to check the material right away: take a sample in the store and hold it wrapped in a wet cloth for several days.

Among their main advantages of are the following:

  • strength, durability, abrasion resistance and ease of maintenance. Such a finish will last at least 15 years, and at the same time will not lose its original properties;
  • absolute resistance to moisture and various detergents;
  • resistance to high temperatures and temperature extremes;
  • high thermal conductivity, so you can install underfloor heating system;
  • excellent antistatic performance;
  • solidity, which affects both the appearance and strength, because there is simply no way for water to penetrate under the coating;
  • highly decorative when it comes to 3D floors. The floor may not have any color or pattern, it can be applied to any image that will look as realistic as possible.

But with all the advantages, it is worth noting some features of the self-leveling floor that should be considered when choosing such a coating:

  • high price of work;
  • the need to properly prepare the base, i. perform a concrete screed;
  • preparatory work for creating a self-leveling floor can take up to 4 weeks, but the process of creating a coating is not so long.

#5. Wooden floor

At first glance, it seems that using wood in a room like a bathroom is generally inappropriate. But if you look into this issue, you can come to the conclusion that , with careful selection of materials, you can organize a wooden floor in the bathroom and enjoy it for a long time. This option has a lot of undeniable advantages :

  • this is a warm coating, because wood has a low thermal conductivity. Even without a system of underfloor heating, it will be possible to step on the floor in the bathroom comfortably;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • a pleasant appearance that brings warmth and comfort to the bathroom, allowing you to make it original.

There are also disadvantages of .

  • Firstly, wood – is quite an expensive finishing material , so finishing the floor in this way can cost a pretty penny.
  • Secondly, the fact that wood can absorb moisture and deform cannot be discounted. To avoid this, you need choose the most moisture-resistant wood species , which, by the way, were previously used in shipbuilding, and also apply protective coatings for wood.

Excellent teak wood. This is what shipbuilders have been using for hundreds of years.

Such a material is obtained by treating wood with steam at a high temperature, up to 250 0 C, in the absence of oxygen. At the same time, moisture resistance increases significantly, the risk of deformations, the development of fungus or mold is reduced.

In addition, it is better to treat wood with moisture-resistant compounds , and cover the finished floor with several layers of special yacht varnish.

#6. Waterproof laminate

Laminate, like wood, is not for everyone to use in their bathroom.

The advantages of such a solution are many:

  • strength and resistance of the coating to mechanical damage;
  • easy to install;
  • warm material surface, so getting out of the shower or bath will be comfortable;
  • excellent appearance;

#7. Vinyl floor

Another good finishing material that works well in the bathroom. This flooring consists of individual multilayer tiles , or may be sold in a roll .

Among the main advantages of this coating option is worth noting:

  • high strength. Even a heavy and sharp object that has fallen on the floor cannot damage the material;
  • waterproof. The material absolutely does not absorb moisture and does not deteriorate if water accumulates on its surface, but it is better to prevent moisture from entering the seams. That is why they are recommended either to be carefully sealed, or to generally choose a roll rather than a tile material;
  • easy installation and maintenance;
  • It is very comfortable to walk on such a surface, because the material is warm and pleasant to the touch. In addition, it does not slip, which increases your safety;
  • a huge variety of possible colors and textures. Such material can imitate almost any surface: from wood to pebbles, which becomes an advantage when creating an original interior;
  • excellent heat and sound insulation;
  • durability;
  • antistatic.

But even such an ideal, at first glance, coating is not without its shortcomings:

  • non-environmental, because the material is made from fully synthetic materials. When burning, the coating releases toxic substances;
  • if material was used in rolls, it will be difficult to repair the damage – the entire floor will have to be redone.
