Is washable paint really washable?
Well, every product on our roundup is! Washable paint boasts stain-resistant technology, making it much more hard-wearing than your average emulsion. Its durable formula means you can wipe away blemishes with simple soap and water, without dulling or damaging your colour and finish.
What kind of paint is washable?
Glossy paint has long been considered the easiest to clean but washable paints now come in contemporary flat finishes too. You’ll find a variety of finishes on our list to suit all interiors tastes, including the below:
Matt
Matt paints are non-reflective and smooth, with a sheen level of less than 10%. They complement rich colours and are well-suited to homes that are modern in style.
Chalky
Particularly popular among the upcycling brigade, chalky paints are highly matt and rustic in feel. Their sheen level is typically around 2%, making them ideal for giving your walls a touch of vintage charm.
Silk, satin or eggshell
Offering a much shinier and more polished finish, these steam-resistant paints have a sheen level of around 20%. They reflect light and are typically quite glossy. Opt for eggshell or satin for skirting and door frames and silk for walls in higher traffic rooms like kitchens and hallways.
How we test washable paint
Our expert testers judge each paint on its application, consistency, coverage, washability and durability. We note how resistant the paint is to scuffing and apply a selection of everyday stains, such as mud and red wine, to see how easy they are to remove.
We assess whether wiping or scrubbing affects the colour or finish of the paint. We trial a range of colours from each brand to gauge how true they are to the colour cards and labels.

How to buy the best washable paint
There are three things to bear in mind when choosing the best washable paint for your home and requirements:
Finish
Depending on personal preference, washable paints come in lots of different finishes including matt and silk. Silk has a soft sheen and reflects light differently to matt, so choose a finish that matches your style.
Drying time
A quicker drying time is more ideal for those who live in a busy household – but again, this is down to personal preference as some quick-drying paints may be more expensive.
Colours available
The majority of washable paints are available in several different colours, so there’s no need to settle for brilliant white – unless you want to of course.

What makes paint washable?
Washable and wipeable wall paint is made in a way that allows it to get damp without the colour rubbing off. Many washable paints also have built-in anti-stain technology to prevent spills and marks settling in to the finish. While gloss paint has always been the traditional go-to for its washable properties and cleanability, there are now wipeable and washable paints available in almost every finish.
What’s the best way to clean a painted wall?
You should ensure the wall is free from dust or loose dirt before wiping it. If you have a soft brush attachment on your vacuum, you could use that to reach high points in a room. Once any loose debris has been removed, gently clean the walls with a sponge and warm soapy water. If you have a stubborn stain, and have used scrubbable paint, you can afford to go in a bit harder, but always test an inconspicuous area first!
Can you paint over washable paint?
If you’re painting over with the same type of paint, it will be fine, but otherwise, lightly sand the walls after washing them down, so the new paint has something to adhere to.
What’s the best washable paint to buy in the UK?
Based on its range of colours (a whopping 60), price, and the huge amount of praise heaped on it, we think the Homebase Tough & Durable Matt Paint is currently the best washable or wipeable paint to buy.
How we chose our recommendations
Because we know that there’s nothing like a real recommendation from a real parent, we first headed to the Mumsnet forums to find out which washable paint Mumsnet users had bought. We checked out the types they recommended for being up to the job, that stayed looking fresh after cleaning, and could withstand busy traffic areas in family homes, as well as looking good and being easy to apply. We then did some research across the wider web, looking at which washable paints had won accolades or been featured in ‘best buy’ lists across websites and print media, and what customer reviews said about them.
Having collated all that information, we picked the top washable paints we thought would make the best buys.

Your next paint project is about to get more colorful! The Spruce Best Home Interior Paint & Primer in One is a premium acrylic paint that’s perfect for interior walls. After listening to reader feedback and experimenting with different formulas, we studied the most pressing concerns (odor, formula, application, and color). We developed a paint product that we love and think you will too!
Produced by KILZ, you can choose from matte, semi-gloss, and eggshell finishes. While all three are stain-resistant and long-lasting, our matte formula has the lowest level of sheen (0 to 4 units at 85 F) and is perfect for ceilings, bedrooms, and other rooms that don’t see as much foot traffic. The eggshell or semi-gloss paint has a slight sheen (17 to 22 units at 85 F) that’s decorative and easy to clean.
We’ve invested considerable time testing this paint. We are impressed with the thick coverage and depth of color. We found that one coat will do when you expect to need two. Since we know that picking a color can feel daunting, we narrowed down our colors to 32 curated shades that are elegant and versatile. You can’t go wrong with any color you pick. Low odor was also important to us; our product is low VOC and low odor. You can apply this paint with a nylon or polyester brush, a roller, or an airless paint sprayer. It is available exclusively on Amazon.

Final Verdict
The best paint for interior walls is Sherwin-Williams Cashmere Interior Acrylic Latex (view at Sherwin-Williams). You can’t beat the buttery smooth application and rich, low-stipple finish. However, if you’re having a hard time choosing a color, you can’t go wrong with The Spruce Best Home by KILZ Interior Paint & Primer (view at Amazon). The 32 shades are curated, providing foolproof versatility and an elegant appearance.
Color
The color you pick is likely your biggest consideration when selecting interior paint. Even if you already know what color interior paint you want, there are many shade choices. Most major paint manufacturers offer an extensive selection of color chips. Use them to narrow down your options, then consider purchasing a pint-sized paint tester to try out the color at home if you’re still torn.
If you can’t find an exact match in the color swatches, typically, you can have a custom color mixed at your local paint store. Bring in a sample of the shade you’re imagining—it can be anything, even a pillow or a favorite sweater—and a color code machine called a spectrophotometer scans and deciphers the color. The machines aren’t perfect, so visually check the color to see if it’s on target with what you were imagining. The paint mixer should be able to tweak it further, if necessary.
Another option is a small device, the Color Muse (view on Amazon), which can scan a wall, counter, or other object and find you the closest color match among top paint brands. The device reads the RGB (red, green, blue) values of the color and identifies paint choices that match. If no matching shade is found, the device provides you with the RGB code to create a custom paint shade. Paint color options are limitless. The bigger task is selecting your top choice for your space, style, and furnishings.
Finish
You have three basic finish categories to choose from, and sometimes paint is categorized by these finish types. Select from a flat finish, low-luster, or glossy finish.
Flat paint is exactly as it sounds—the resulting finish doesn’t reflect much light. It’s also called a matte finish. This type of interior paint is good for surfaces that won’t see much action, like ceilings. It’s usually the least expensive type of interior paint, and it can be difficult to keep clean and look fresh. Only use flat paint if you’re on a tight budget and using it on an out-of-the-way location in your house. On the plus side, matte paint will hide imperfections better than shinier finishes.
The next type of finish is low-luster, which only offers a slight reflection of light. Low-luster paints include both eggshell and satin finishes. Of the two, the eggshell is slightly more matte. This type of paint is prevalent since it’s versatile and offers increased durability and cleaning ability compared to flat paint. You’ll likely want to use interior paint with a satin or eggshell finish in the majority of areas within your home, such as living room and bedroom walls, hallways, bathrooms, and more; all are good places to use a low-luster finish.
Finally, paints with a glossy finish offer a high amount of sheen or light reflection and a harder finish than flat paints. This category includes semi-gloss paints that are slightly more matte than their glossy counterparts. Glossy paint is used for windowsills or handrails, while semi-gloss paints are popular in higher humidity areas, like kitchens or bathrooms. Glossy paints look beautiful but magnify any imperfections in the surface they’re painted on, so take this into account when selecting your paint finish.
The finish you choose will depend on where you are painting and how resilient you want the finish. Aesthetics also play a role; high gloss finishes add drama, while a more matte appearance might play into calmer surroundings.
VOC
Volatile organic compounds are commonly referred to as VOCs, and it’s important to know if your paint has them. If the thought of a freshly painted room makes your nose wrinkle, it’s because you’ve smelled VOCs before.
To keep the chemistry lesson brief, VOCs are compounds that are emitted from some solids or liquids. Many latex-based paints are considered low VOC formulas. These are a better option for interior painting since they will minimize the exposure you have to VOCs during painting and afterward.
Oil-based paints have a higher concentration of VOCs, and so do the paint thinners needed to clean the brushes and rollers you use to apply the paint. If you opt for oil-based paint or paint that isn’t low VOC, take extra precautions to ventilate the area.
Additives
Some interior paints have additives to enhance the application or finish of the paint. Consider what you’re trying to achieve with your painting project to determine which—if any—additives are necessary for your purposes.
Enamel is one of the most common additives you’ll find in interior paint. The addition of enamel to the paint formula reduces the paint’s porosity and results in a harder, more durable finish. This could be important for high-traffic areas where dirt might infiltrate the paint or if the finish is subjected to lots of touching and bumping.
Acrylic is often added to oil-based paint to prevent yellowing. This is a common downfall of oil-based interior paint. By adding acrylic, the paint stays true to its original hue longer. You’ll also see acrylic added to latex paints to improve their durability and finish.

What to Consider When Choosing Interior Paint
A new coat of paint is a simple and affordable way to update the interior of your home. Although paint color is crucial to achieving the desired overall effect, it’s just as important to choose the right paint product to ensure the best results. Weigh these factors in any paint product to avoid common pitfalls.
Viscosity
Viscosity relates to a paint’s thickness and structure, also known as the paint’s body. Paint has either a dense or flowing body. Paint with higher viscosity is a thicker, slower-moving paint. High-viscosity paints splatter and drip less but take longer to dry. Low-viscosity paints appear very thin and tend to drip and splatter more but dry quickly.
A paint’s viscosity also lets you know which application you can use with success. Ceiling paint has a higher viscosity than most wall paints and poses a lower risk of drips and splatters when you paint overhead. Interior wall paint has a lower viscosity and drips off the roller more readily, allowing faster drying time and quick coverage.
Durability
Oil-based paints are more durable than water-based paints. Oil-based paints are best for high-traffic areas or exteriors. However, a paint’s durability goes hand in hand with sheen level, whether oil- or water-based.
The higher the sheen level, the easier it is to clean and the longer it will last. However, higher- sheen paints show more imperfections on the wall’s surface. Paints are available in five sheens: gloss, semi-gloss, eggshell, satin (velvet), and matte (flat). Matte or flat paints are the less expensive options, but they are harder to keep clean and are less durable. Flat paints are best for ceilings and low-traffic areas. Gloss is the easiest to clean, lasts the longest, and tends to be more expensive. Gloss paints work best on high-touch surfaces such as doors, trim, and cabinetry. Higher-sheen paints also take longer to cure.
Suitability for the Surface
Interior paints come in a few varieties: acrylic or latex (water-based), alkyd (oil-based), and newer water-based alkyd varieties that perform like oil paints but emit less harmful fumes. Choose the variety that holds up best on the surface you plan to paint.
Opt for the more consistent finish and fade resistance of latex or acrylic paint for walls, seldom-used furnishings, and cabinetry in dry areas. Consider the more impact- and rot-resistant oil-based or water-based alkyd paint for trim work, doors, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, and everyday furnishings.
Dry Time
Because VOCs can be emitted into the air from the time of paint application up to a few months after the paint cures, choosing a paint that dries and cures quickly can help minimize your VOC exposure. Look for water-based paints that dry to the touch in 1 hour and cure within 30 days. Oil-based paints should optimally dry to the touch in 6 to 8 hours and cure within 7 days.
VOCs
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are chemicals found in many oil- and water-based paint products that easily evaporate and can emit toxins into the surrounding air. VOC exposure can induce headaches, nausea, or liver and kidney damage, so the lower the VOC content of the paint, the better for your health. Seek out paints labeled “Zero-VOC” or “Low-VOC” to minimize your exposure to harmful fumes.
Should You Buy a Paint and Primer in One?
Self-priming interior paints, usually labeled “paint and primer,” are worth considering: They have a built-in binding agent that improves adhesion to the surface, and no separate primer coat is required. One can of quality self-priming paint often costs half as much as separate cans of primer and paint yet yield a more consistent finish for the average DIYer.

Our Verdict
Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint interior paint came in as our top pick because it’s an all-in-one paint and primer that creates a lasting finish and durable surface that holds up to scrubbing. How We Chose the Best Interior Paints
After exploring dozens of interior paint options, we considered several criteria before choosing our best interior paint picks. We based our choices on brand reputation and overall customer satisfaction. We also considered the paint’s versatility, usability, and price. The top choices feature excellent coverage and various sheen options, and many are low VOC.
Types of Interior Paint Finishes
All of our recommendations are available in various finishes, including the ever-popular eggshell and satin. These finishes are the most widely used for bedrooms, living rooms, or dining rooms thanks to how they balance durability of glossier paint finishes with the forgiveness of more matte ones—meaning they aren’t so glossy that they highlight imperfections in the wall. If you’re painting a bathroom or a kitchen, consider bumping up the sheen one level to a semi-gloss for extra resistance to water.
- Flat/Matte: This finish has minimal shine. Matte/flat finishes provide excellent coverage and cover imperfections well. However, they are the least durable of all the finishes and best for surfaces that will not be touched much, like ceilings or formal dining rooms.
- Eggshell: Eggshell is slightly more lustrous than flat paints. This finish covers imperfections, and they’re more durable than flat finishes. Eggshell paints are great for low to medium traffic areas, like living rooms, hallways, and entryways.
- Satin: Satin is the most popular finish in interior paint finishes. This finish has a velvety sheen and is easier to clean than flat and eggshell paint finishes. Satin finish is a great choice for high-traffic areas like kitchens, playrooms, family rooms, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.
- Semi-gloss: Semi-gloss finishes are shiny and reflective. This finish is extremely durable and mildew-resistant, so these paints are best used in kitchens and bathrooms.
High-gloss: High-gloss paints have the shiniest and most reflective paint finish, and they are the most durable and washable. This finish is best for doors, trim, and cabinetry.
FAQs
Before making a final selection, the following answers to frequently asked questions may provide additional insight into the optimal procedures for selecting the best type of interior paint for walls.
Q: What brand of paint do professional painters use?
Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams are two of the best-selling brands on the market that are popular among professional painters.
Q: What paint colors are best for bedrooms?
The best colors for bedrooms are non-visually stimulating hues such as blues and greens or cool grays and neutral creams.
Q: What type of paint makes a room look bigger and brighter?
Light paint colors make a room look bigger and brighter.
Q: What is the 60-30-10 rule, and how do I use it to choose interior paint?
This rule states that 60 percent of the room should be a dominant color, 30 percent should be the secondary color or texture, and 10 percent should be an accent color. The room’s main color, the walls, should be 60 percent. Use the 30 percent or secondary color in the draperies, accent chairs, bed linens, or on an accent wall. The remaining 10 percent should be in the accent decor.
Q: Should I paint my ceiling and walls the same color?
Painting your ceiling and walls the same color will draw the eye up, creating the illusion of a larger room and higher ceilings. However, using a dark color can have the reverse effect and make a room look smaller and closed-in, especially if there isn’t enough natural light.

How to choose wall paint and what to look for?
The degree of resistance of the coating to aggressive environmental factors depends on the quality of the selected paint.
When selecting paint, they are guided by the following criteria :
- What kind of work is paint intended for? Wall paints are exterior and interior (interior). Compositions of the first type have increased resistance to precipitation and fading in the sun.
- Which room will be painted ? For the bathroom or kitchen, special types of paint are used with increased resistance to abrasion, moisture and high temperatures. Latex and silicone emulsions have such properties. For the bedroom and living room, bright and abrasion-resistant acrylic paints are suitable. Water-based compositions are environmentally friendly, so they are perfect for a children’s room.
- Which invoice to choose ? According to this criterion, all paints are matte, semi-matte, semi-gloss and glossy. Matte does not shine, so it perfectly hides surface defects. Semi-gloss have a barely noticeable shine and have increased resistance to abrasion, so they can be safely washed. Semi-gloss emulsions can be washed, so they are great for nurseries, kitchens and bathrooms. Glossy paint is the most brilliant and resistant to abrasion, but you need to work with it carefully, because it emphasizes all the surface irregularities.
Also, when choosing a paint, pay attention to such an indicator as hiding power . It depends on him whether the emulsion can paint over the old coating layer. The higher this indicator, the fewer layers of paint will have to be applied to obtain a perfectly even tone.
Another important feature is the abrasion resistance of . This characteristic is especially important if the walls will be painted in a high traffic area.

The best wall paint: review, properties and comparison.
At the final stage of the renovation, we are faced with the task of giving the walls a beautiful look. Some choose wallpaper, some prefer decorative plaster, but most paint the walls. And it’s true, it’s fast, stylish and good! The question arises: how to choose paint so that it satisfies you both in terms of quality and price? Let’s try to figure this out together. We consider only harmless, water-dispersion paints.
- Paint classes. What do they tell us?
- Gloss level and unique color features, which one is best for walls?
- Best wall paint selection chart
Paint grades, which one is better to paint?
There are always certain factors that you should pay attention to when choosing a paint. These include wet abrasion class, coverage and wear resistance class, gloss level, unique features and of course price. The buyer can always find all quality indicators in the technical sheets for the products. However, we add on our own that the standards of each country may differ from each other and it is best to judge by the generally accepted European DIN classification (Well, or just check with us). Let’s get back to the topic and go through the meaning of these characteristics:
- Wet Abrasion Rating is a measure of a coating’s ability to withstand mechanical impact with water. It is determined in laboratory conditions by the degree of wear of the coating as a result of simulating the washing procedure. The highest is class 1, the lowest is class 5. Therefore, if this indicator is important for you (and on the walls this is one of the determining factors), then choose 1 or 2 class.
Where is the best place to use paint with this grade? class 1 – for medical institutions and for rooms with cleaning with disinfectants. Class 2 – for walls and ceilings in bathrooms, kitchens and other rooms with high humidity, able to withstand repeated wet cleaning. Class 3 – for walls and ceilings in the interior of residential premises, wet cleaning of the painted surface will also not hurt. Grade 4 – paint for ceilings. Grade 5 – the cheapest paint, which is very similar to classic whitewash and has the appropriate quality.
Wear resistance class – a physical property that characterizes the resistance of the paintwork to abrasion, is one of the main parameters that determine the durability of the paint. This indicator is related to the wet abrasion class, but wider. So it will also include temperature loads, adhesion with the previous layer and wear of the material over time.
Spreading power (coverage) class – more important for work and consumption calculations. This is an indicator that characterizes the ability of the paint to overlap the existing surface. The lower the class, the better. As a rule, paints with good wear resistance also have good hiding power.
Gloss level and unique paint features, which one is best for walls?
Gloss level is the ability of the paint to shine, reflect light. But gloss is not only glitter. Glossy paints contain more resin than pigment, while matte paints do the opposite. The coating that forms the glossy paint is easy to clean and more durable. This type of paint is ideal for rooms with high humidity. You can get a semi-gloss or even a semi-matte paint that is suitable for the bath and will please you for a long time. Pure matte paints are not intended for surfaces that need constant washing. Therefore, they are usually more often used for ceilings. A significant advantage of matte paint is its ability to hide defects on any surface. While glossy paint will only emphasize the slightest scratch or unevenness.
Here it is important to add that resistant matte paints exist, and we will consider many of them below. However, the cost of their production is high, which is why such paints are not cheap for the buyer.
The unique features of are those features that the paint can boast of, which makes it stand out from the rest. For example, universality for walls and ceilings, double coverage, antiseptic properties, high degree of whiteness, anti-allergic properties, etc. If a number of specific properties are important to you, it is better to ask a store specialist +375(29)230-00-80 MTS or +375(44)597-00-80 A1.

Kitchen wall paint: advantages of painted walls
How to paint kitchen walls: paint selection
What paint to paint kitchen walls: options
Best kitchen paint: application features
Wall painting attracts a person with just one moment – if necessary, it is enough to simply update almost any room without resorting to any cardinal alterations and complex processes. Even wallpapering, compared to painting walls, looks like a complex and high-tech process. The advantages of such a finishing material do not end there – there are many of them, and we will talk about all of them in this article, in which, together with the okuhne.net website, we will get acquainted with the main advantages of painted walls, the types of paints used and the technology for their application. In general, we will try to answer the question, what kind of wall paint for the kitchen is better?
How to choose wall paint in the kitchen photo
Kitchen wall paint: advantages of painted walls
lesser degree. There are not very many of them, but it is they that make a person give preference to this material. Let’s take a closer look at the benefits of painted walls in the kitchen.
- The most important thing is the unlimited choice of shades. Opportunity to create and create on your own. With the help of wall paint in the kitchen, you can not only roll it with a roller in the shade you like, but also paint them in the full sense of the word – if you are an artist, then you have a full-fledged canvas for painting, if an ordinary person, then coloring. It is paint that allows you to move away from factory stamps such as wallpaper or panels or similar materials.
- Relatively low cost – at least when compared with high-quality and expensive wallpaper. Although the paint is different – the cheapest paint does not need to be taken into account. Here, just the opposite is true – its use will ruin you, since you will often have to repaint the walls in the kitchen. At a minimum, you need washable paint for the kitchen walls.
- High technical and operational characteristics. Here, again, there is one caveat – subject to the choice of the correct and high-quality paint. You understand that the kitchen is a special room, and it puts forward no less special requirements for its finishing materials.
What paint to paint the walls in the kitchen photo
Naturally, one should not discount such advantages as simple application technology. And here is another caveat – the paint itself is easy to apply on the surface. It is much more difficult to properly prepare this surface – we will talk about this a little later, but for now we will deal with the choice of paint and varnish products for kitchen walls. For those who do not like to read a lot, a video is specially attached.
How to paint the walls in the kitchen: the choice of paint
As mentioned above, the kitchen is a special room, so to speak, with its own quirks, which dictate the rules for choosing paint and varnish products for it. It doesn’t matter why you buy it (for walls, ceilings or slopes), but you need to take into account the requirements put forward by the room – otherwise you risk wasting money and your own efforts. So what are these requirements?
If you think that this is too much for such a simple material as paint, you are mistaken – to a greater or lesser extent, almost all paint from a serious and self-respecting manufacturer has such qualities. It is from the manufacturer that the ability of the paint to withstand the harsh conditions of the kitchen to a greater extent depends. Naturally, one should not discount the type of paint, which we will talk about next.
What paint to paint the walls in the kitchen: options
It’s no secret that modern manufacturers of paints and varnishes offer a fairly large range of all kinds of paints that differ from each other in their composition and, as a result, properties and qualities. If we adjust all existing varieties of modern paints to the operating conditions in the kitchen, then water-based and water-dispersion paints, alkyd, epoxy and polyurethane will be most suitable for this room. The last two are not used in everyday life, despite the fact that they are best suited (their cost is too high), alkyd paints emit a too strong and pungent odor (they are also rarely used), but water-dispersion and water-based paints have become quite widespread, and with they deserve to be looked into in more detail. There are enough of them.
- Silicone-based paint is a rather expensive coating, which is distinguished by its elasticity and ability to hide minor surface irregularities. For the kitchen, this is a great option, but, as they say, not without flaws. It is impossible to wash such paint with the use of chemicals and abrasive materials. In all other respects, it is in no way inferior, and sometimes even superior to all other most common paints.
- Acrylic paint. Somewhat cheaper than silicone paint, but in terms of its characteristics it practically does not differ from it. Such paints also do not tolerate abuse – you can only wash the surfaces painted with them with a damp cloth and laundry soap.
- Water based paint. According to its characteristics, it is somewhat inferior to the options described above, but it also has some advantages that are not inherent in them: firstly, it is cheap; secondly, it breathes and allows the walls to breathe; thirdly, some types of water-based paints can be washed even with the use of aggressive cleaners. The main thing is not to rub intensively, but to trust the chemistry.
The best kitchen paint photo
Among other things, approaching the question of how to choose a paint for the walls in the kitchen, you should pay attention to the aesthetic characteristics of paint products. Almost all modern paints can be matte, glossy or semi-gloss. Moreover, they can be sold already dyed and, so to speak, in the form of a semi-finished product – white paint, which can always be tinted with special coloring pigments even at home.
The best paint for the kitchen: application features
It is difficult to judge any paint until you try it in practice – even expensive paint, due to some circumstances, may not be a very good coating. Some compounds adhere well to the surface, others are finicky – these points cannot be ignored when choosing a paint, especially if you are going to apply it yourself. In short, any paint requires the right approach to its application – almost each of their varieties will lie well on the surface, if certain conditions are met.
- Thorough preparation of walls for painting. You need a completely perfect surface, even without the slightest distortion – they will all appear. Paint will reveal them, and daylight or artificial light will emphasize and enhance their perception. The surface to be painted must be carefully puttied and cleaned with an emery net. This is one thing, and the other is the treatment of the prepared surface with a primer – not a single paint will fall on dust and grease. It is for this reason that the surface to be painted should be abundantly opened with a primer, preferably in two layers.
- Proper application. If it seems to you that it is not difficult to smear a wall with a roller, you are mistaken – and this work has its own subtleties. Firstly, it is a uniform layer, which is achieved by carefully rolling the paint over the surface of the walls. Secondly, it is a constant and unchanging direction of movement of the roller. Thirdly, it is the control of debris that still gets on the surface to be painted (you just need to remove it with your finger) – in the same way, you need to extinguish the resulting air bubbles. The roller itself is of great importance when painting walls – special attention should be paid to its choice.
Washable kitchen wall paint photo
In general, painting is not such a simple matter as it might seem at first glance – you can get a high-quality painted surface only with an appropriate approach to this matter. Thoroughness and patience are the key to a good result.
So we looked at what wall paint is for the kitchen and how it is applied. In conclusion, it remains to add only one thing – in particular, to talk about some of the techniques that allow the process of dyeing in several colors. Firstly, this is a stencil that you can make yourself; secondly, masking tape, which creates a clear line between two paints of different colors; and thirdly, it is paintable wallpaper, which will allow a beginner in repair and decoration to create a surface with a structure and even with different colors.

varieties, tips for choosing, photo examples
The choice of materials for finishing the kitchen is one of the most difficult repair tasks. It is necessary that they are not only beautiful, but also reliable, capable of well enduring the conditions of not the easiest operation. Constant exposure to water, steam, fats and various acids – not every material is suitable.
Washable paint – reliable and convenient material
In addition, an important criterion is ease of care. If a new renovation requires a lot of effort to maintain order, the joy of it will quickly pass. On the other hand, materials whose condition is difficult to fix are also not the best choice for the kitchen.
Looks nice and is easy to clean when dirty
Many builders advise covering walls and even ceilings with washable paint. Let’s see what it is and what to look for when choosing.
A universal option for any kitchen

Pros and cons of using paint in the interior of the kitchen
Before deciding to finish the kitchen with any material, you need to clearly analyze its advantages and disadvantages for yourself. This also applies to washable paint. To make this moment easier for you, we have compiled detailed lists of pros and cons.
Washable paints have a wide range of advantages
So, washable paint has 9 undeniable advantages0019 :
- Easy to apply . If you have a roller, the walls are already leveled, then you can do the painting work yourself. Just be a little careful and you’ll be fine.
- In the kitchen, water splashes and small drops of grease constantly hit the walls, and condensation settles on the ceiling. One of the great benefits of paint is that it can be washed. This property helps keep the kitchen in order.
- If scratches or abrasions appear, the damaged area can be easily covered with a new coat of paint.
- Color mixtures do not have a strong odor , and the light aroma disappears quickly after dyeing.
- High-quality paint consists of environmentally friendly materials, non-toxic when heated and safe for your health.
- The color palette is extremely wide, so you can easily find the right option for your kitchen design.
- If the application was carried out according to the rules, then paint can serve you for decades without losing its color.
- High-quality mixtures have a high water resistance. Therefore, you can use them to decorate the walls above the kitchen sink.
- The material is non-flammable and absolutely safe to use near the stove.
- Washable paint, ideal for “paintable wallpaper”. It can also be applied to plaster, concrete, drywall, brick or wood.
With so many positives, it’s no surprise that washable paints are very popular with builders and designers.
With their help, you can create unusual interiors
However, not without drawbacks:
- If you want to paint surfaces in a new building, you have to wait at least a year . While the walls are shrinking, the paint can warp and crack. However, this minus is easy to get around if you choose glass wallpaper as the basis for painting – they will provide a reliable and durable surface that is not afraid of shrinkage.
- Some people forgo paint because they want a more textured wall or ceiling design. However, modern paints can be embossed, contain a variety of design additives and decorative elements.
- If the paint is of poor quality, it is not necessary to talk about the above pluses . The coating can peel off, lose color quickly and even be harmful to your health. Therefore, we recommend buying paints only in trusted stores that monitor storage conditions.
Disadvantages are very conditional and easily solved
As you can see, the list of advantages is indisputably wider than the list of disadvantages. Moreover, the latter are very conditional and are decided by the right choice. However, it must be understood that each type of paint has its own characteristics, pleasant and not very. In addition, everyone has their own preferences and someone may find it a disadvantage that for another it will become the main reason for buying.
If paints can create such masterpieces, they can be forgiven for shortcomings
Therefore, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the detailed characteristics of the types of washable paint.
Paints come in a wide variety
Acrylic paint
One of the most popular types is acrylic paint mixes. They can be used for all types of surfaces, however, reviews note that this paint is best applied to wood and concrete.
Variety of colors and high quality
Due to its structure, the paint does not require a perfect rough finish – it is able to mask small cracks and bumps. The material is quite elastic, so it is applied without much difficulty. The smell is practically absent, weathering within half an hour after application.
The smell of repairs is imperceptible after half an hour
Walls and ceilings painted in this way can be washed either with a damp cloth or with non-abrasive detergents. If you properly care for the surface, the paint layer will remain in its original form for 15-20 years.
Acrylic paint lays down very evenly
The list of advantages of acrylic paints is quite wide:
- The color of the paint in the can is fully consistent with the result after application: the color retains its intensity, so you can always predict the final design of the walls and ceiling.
- Tolerates fluctuations in temperature, which are indispensable in the kitchen.
- Dries in a maximum of half an hour – significantly faster than other types.
- After application, cracks and wrinkles do not form, the paint lays down very evenly.
- The color does not change over time, the paint does not fade from direct sunlight.
The result is worth the money
Only the relatively high price can be attributed to the minuses. However, we believe that, taking into account all the characteristics, the cost of this paint is quite justified.
Latex paint
Latex paint is a water-based emulsion familiar to many, to which latex compounds have been added. It is often used specifically for the kitchen area, despite the fact that it exceeds even acrylic in cost.
The main bonus of this paint is the ability to wash it using mild abrasive products and brushes with non-metallic fibers. This makes it possible to clean even the most dirt-prone areas, such as above the hob or sink.
Does not fade even under harsh conditions
The advantages of latex paint also include :
- High wear resistance . Latex paint is the most resistant among a number of washable ones.
Some types can withstand quite intensive cleaning, which not all color mixtures allow. - The paint is virtually odorless and residual odors dissipate in seconds after application.
- Good drying performance. The paint dries completely in twenty minutes, in rare cases (for example, if the room has high humidity), this period can stretch up to two hours.
- Latex mix can be used on any surface – concrete, foam, wood, wallpaper and even tiles.
- The paint is breathable, which completely eliminates the appearance of bubbles and bumps.
What about the disadvantages?
Unfortunately, they also could not do without them :
- High cost. Finishing the kitchen with latex paint will cost you a round sum. Unless, of course, you try to save money and buy products from an unknown manufacturer. However, in this case, there is no need to talk about quality.
- Latex attracts some micro-organisms that cause mold . Therefore, we recommend that you treat the surface with a special antiseptic primer before applying the paint.
In general, latex paint is an excellent choice for the kitchen, due to its durability and the ability to be washed regularly.
Extraordinarily pure colors.
Silicate paint
Silicate paint for walls and ceilings is considered one of the most perfect at the moment. Resistant, easy to apply and durable, it is also the most expensive of the range presented.
Easy to apply
Let’s see why it’s so popular:
- First of all, it is necessary to note the vapor permeability. This means that hot, moist steam will pass through the coating, leaving only condensate on the wall. This property significantly improves the microclimate of the room.
- Dirt and dust adhere less to surfaces painted with silicate paint – due to their properties, they simply repel them, which greatly facilitates the cleaning process.
- The paint does not fade from heat and direct sunlight, while maintaining clean and rich colors.
- Mold and fungi do not develop on silicate mixtures, they are unattractive to various parasites.
- The composition of the silicate paint is completely environmentally friendly and does not contain elements harmful to health.
- They can be used on plaster, brick, concrete, wallpaper, plaster.
The disadvantages are as follows:
- High price;
- Difficult to apply on embossed surfaces;
- Sufficiently complex staining technology that requires certain skills.
In general, silicate paints are the best choice for the kitchen, due to their strength, reliability and durability. A diverse color palette allows you to choose the right option for any kitchen.
Deep and rich shades
Rubber paint
Rubber paint is relatively new on the paint and varnish market. In appearance, it resembles a thick mastic, which must be slightly diluted with ordinary water to the specified consistency. Most often on sale you can find white paint, which is given the desired shade with a special color scheme. However, ready-made mixes are also being sold now.
The most reliable option
After drying, a thin and durable vapor-permeable film is formed on the painted surface, which has the ability to stretch by 300-400 percent – you don’t have to worry that the kitchen will suffer if your neighbors flood you a little.
Very easy to apply
Contains no toxic ingredients making it suitable for use in the kitchen.
Also, the advantages of this paint include:
- Relatively fast drying – about one hour.
- Maximum versatility: good application on wood, concrete, brick, steel, gypsum, aerated concrete, aluminium.
- Easy to apply – some types can even be spray applied.
- High resistance to moisture, steam and temperature extremes.
- Excellent vapor permeability.
- The material is absolutely hygienic and does not allow the appearance of mold and mildew.
- Due to the property of the paint to stretch, the appearance of cracks and wrinkles on the surface is absolutely excluded.
- Relatively affordable price.
As for the minuses, there are only two of them, and both of them are very conditional: such paint will last up to ten years, so it will not work to make repairs for centuries. And, most likely, you will have to experiment to find the right shade.
Combines well with other materials
Gloss paint
Washable paints also differ in appearance: a lot depends on the chosen texture. The most popular type is still glossy color mixtures.
Shine will add light
Rich colors, shiny surface and light reflections look very attractive. Such paint is an ideal choice for, as due to the reflective functions, it visually enlarges the room. In addition, she is able to add the missing light to the room.
Stylish and rich shades with highlights
However, when using on glossy paints, you need to be careful. You will have to give up carob chandeliers – emulsions with a strong reflective factor can show the not-so-attractive “insides” of the lamp. Your choice is flat lamps or beautiful lampshades.
In addition, keep in mind that any dirt is more noticeable on a glossy surface, which means that you will have to clean the kitchen much more often. Therefore, we do not recommend applying such paint near gas stoves – precipitation will have to be wiped off almost every day.
An excellent choice for modern styles
Matte colors
Non-glossy lovers often shy away from paints, believing that they are only glossy. This is not true. The modern surface allows you to produce both completely matte and “satin” blends with a soft sheen, without expressive highlights.
The background is well emphasized by bright printed inserts
They can be used in any room, but these colors are most suitable for spacious kitchens. A lot depends on the style – in Provence and Country style kitchens, gloss is not very appropriate, but matte paint is quite suitable.
An excellent choice for classic interiors
However, keep in mind that cleaning the room will be a little more difficult – the matte texture provides some roughness to the coating, so dust and dirt will settle a little deeper. On the other hand, most often such paints allow for a harder wash than their glossy counterparts.
Texture paint
Perhaps the most unusual kind of paint. If you are used to smooth, uniform surfaces, this is clearly not the case. Such mixtures allow you to create a relief coating of the most unusual kind.
The texture can be very diverse
Some types make it possible to imitate plaster, sandstone, graphite and even wood.
The unequivocal advantage of this texture is that the paint does not require preliminary careful leveling of the surface – it easily masks all defects due to its relief structure.
You can choose from a variety of interesting textures.
Using texture paint, you can easily create an unusual interior. In addition, it is almost indispensable for the loft style – some varieties imitate concrete very reliably, however, unlike it, they are more suitable for use in the kitchen.
What color to choose
The question is actually rather ambiguous. A lot depends on your personal preferences, design and configuration of the kitchen, selected furniture. It’s hard to imagine glossy red paint in a classic interior or discreet matte brown in a pop art kitchen.
Paint the kitchen the way you like it
A lot depends on your tastes: someone likes rich shades like orange or ultramarine, and someone prefers noble beige or olive.
Noble shades suit classic interiors
In addition, the color of the walls or ceiling should be in harmony with the rest of the interior elements, shading them favorably, but not drowning them out.
Or maybe you like bright colors?
Therefore, we have put together a few recommendations for you to help you make your choice:
- First of all, decide on the style of the interior. On our website you can find a detailed description of each of them. This will allow you to choose the right color for the walls and ceiling, which will harmoniously fit into the design of your kitchen.
- If the room faces north or west, it makes sense to think about the warm range of tones – it will visually soften the lack of light, make the room more comfortable. And vice versa, in order to slightly extinguish the excess of the sun in the southern and eastern kitchens, it is better to turn to the cold color segment.
- Please note that many paints can be overcoated : it is not necessary to remove the previous coat to apply a new one. So don’t worry if you didn’t manage to choose the right shade the first time – perhaps all this is easy to fix.
- Speaking of shades… Any color has many tones. Therefore, experiment, choosing the right one. If you don’t like anything, you can make the paint yourself. Even the finished mixture is easy to change. It is enough just to buy the right color and choose the proportions.
- Most self-respecting manufacturers sell paint not only in containers of five and ten liters. Many produce so-called probes – small jars of 150-200 milliliters. Paint the kitchen wall and evaluate the saturation and color. This will help to avoid wasted expenses – especially since it will not be possible to return unsuitable paint to the store.
- Don’t be afraid to experiment. Color combinations, paints with complex textures, unusual combinations – a range of modern paints and varnishes allows you to create any design.
- Don’t limit yourself to classic colors. Bronze or gold paint is perfect for luxurious baroque interiors, while translucent acrylic paints look harmonious in romantic styles.
The question of color selection must be decided individually for yourself, so we are careful not to give specific advice. However, if you use these recommendations, it will be much easier to solve it.
Experiment with combinations
And don’t give up drawings with paints. We do not advise you to remember your childhood, but paint is the material that allows you to create truly unusual interiors, such as in this photo.
How to choose
A lot depends on what kind of mixture you take – its quality determines the final result.
First of all, we urge you not to save on this moment – an unknown manufacturer is unlikely to be able to guarantee you a good composition, ease of application and durability.
It is very difficult to choose from a variety of colors
In addition, there are often fakes, which are simply dangerous to use.
So go for trusted brands. The best acrylic paints are produced by brands such as FARBITEX PROFI, Alpina Renova, PARADE W4 – all of them have proven themselves to be of high quality and an excellent assortment.
We recommend choosing silicate paints from companies such as BAUMIT SILIKAT COLOR REPRO, PUFAS FASSADEN-SILIKAT, TIKKURILA FINNGARD SILIKAATTIMAALI. Of course, they cannot be called the most affordable – but the result will definitely justify itself.
Trust proven manufacturers
Among latex paints such brands as VD PROFILUX PL-04A, Tikkurila Euro 7, VITEX SATIN ECO have proven themselves well.
It is more difficult with the range of rubber paints – only FARBEX received positive feedback from them. Perhaps the reason is that the product is relatively new and not all manufacturers have learned how to work with it.
Savings can lead to sad results
As for general recommendations, here we will be categorical – you should buy paints only in large stores that value their reputation.
