  In electric water heaters, dual heating elements work to warm the water. Usually, the bottom element works harder to heat the incoming cold water while the top element only kicks on if the heated water in the top half of the tank becomes depleted. 

  For gas water heaters, a pilot light or electronic ignition system ignites gas flowing to a burner. The burner heats the water within the tank to a target temperature before shutting off. This process produces exhaust, which must be vented to the outside of the home.

• To drain a hot water heater, first flush the system with full water pressure. Connect the drain hose and open the drain valve briefly before shutting it off again. Any sediment lodged in the valve will be dislodged, helping the system to drain more quickly.

  Next, shut off your water heater by disconnecting it from the gas or electric power supply, and turn off the main water supply. Then, with the drain hose still connected from your quick flush, open the drain valve. You won’t see much water flowing out until you allow air into the tank. To do so, you’ll have to disconnect the hot water pipe at the top of your water heater and move it to the side. The tank will begin to drain.

Efficiency standards for gas and electric water heaters are different, but both use the Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) ratings system, where higher scoring units produce more hot water while using less energy. To earn an Energy Star certification, for example, electric water heaters with tanks up to 55 gallons must have a UEF greater than 2. In contrast, gas water heaters with tanks up to 55 gallons only need a UEF above 0.64 or 0.68, depending on how they use water during the day. Qualifications for tanks over 55 gallons are even higher. Choosing a water heater near or above the Energy Star standards will save money on your utilities, though the most efficient units usually command the highest prices.

Water heater warranties

You might be tempted when shopping around for your water heater to make a decision based on features and price alone. But the importance of a good warranty shouldn’t be overlooked, as in a crisis, you’ll want to feel reassured you can get your home back up and running again. So, if you don’t want to be left without hot water for a long stretch of time, then pay close attention to a model with a strong guarantee. 

Typically, water heaters last from eight to 12 years, with their corresponding warranties usually covering six to 12 years. This does have a catch though, as labor warranties only tend to cover one year.  

How much do water heaters cost?

On average, you can expect to spend between $700 and $2,000 to get a new water heater installed in your home. Without installation, electric water heaters usually cost between $300 and $700. Similarly, gas water heaters cost between $400 and $1,000. However, a heater’s cost depends largely on the water heater brand, tank size and its efficiency rating.

Although it’s tempting to open the installation manual and install your new water heater on your own, most homeowners don’t have the necessary skills and experience. By choosing a professional installer, you get someone who knows exactly what to do and how to do it correctly and safely. Furthermore, some brands only sell their water heaters through installers. Installers also often have water heater suggestions for your home.

Most plumbers are trained and licensed and have valuable experience, so it’s worth the extra cost to have them install your water heater. To find the best plumber in your area, take some time to look at their online customer reviews on Yelp, HomeAdvisor, Angie’s List and similar websites. 

Installation costs typically include labor, supplies and water heater removal. You can expect to pay between $300 and $500 to have an installer swap out your old water heater for a newer model, though this may increase or decrease based on where you live. However, if you’re changing the type of water heater in your home, you can expect to pay up to $1,500, sometimes more, to upgrade your home’s electrical or natural gas connections appropriately. Make sure to get quotes from three or four local plumbers in order to find the best price.

Permits & inspections

Most cities and counties require you apply for a permit before you install a water heater in your home. Depending on where you live, the licensed plumber you hire can obtain the necessary permits as part of the installation. However, it’s a good idea to double-check with them or your local building department to learn exact permit requirements for your location. This will also help you find out if you need to get the permit yourself or if the contractor does it. When the installation is complete, someone from the organization that issued the permit will inspect the water heater to verify it complies with the building code.

Gas vs electric water heaters: which is right for you?

We also found that many plumbing experts advise installing a hot water filter to help reduce the amount of sediment and minerals that get into your water heater. This extra system could help double the lifespan of your water heater, but we recommend consulting with your local plumber first to find out if it would be worth it in your area. 

When should you replace your water heater?

You don’t need to be a plumber to figure out that your water heater isn’t working properly, but it helps to know the symptoms associated with a broken water heater before you lose hot water entirely. 

• Look out for any changes in hot water quality, such as brown water or metallic tastes, which may indicate your storage tank is rusting on the inside.
• If you experience a sudden decrease in the amount of hot water your heater delivers, or the water never gets completely hot, this could be the result of a bad or old heating element.
• A decrease in the volume of water coming through the faucets could indicate a pipe is blocked with sediment, hard water deposits or another object.

Best 40 gallon electric water heater

We looked at every 50 gallon tank on the market and our favorite is the Rheem Performance 40 Gal. Electric Tank Water Heater.

What we like

Price — As you can see in the table below, it is $20 cheaper than the comparable AO Smith model and $344 than the Bradford White model.

Easy maintenance — According to Brandon Baril, a plumber in San Diego, most of the Rheem heaters he repairs only take a $9 part because of Rheem’s simple smart controller design. Easier repairs means that you’ll have to replace your hot water heater less frequently and save money. Baril says that when he repairs hot water heaters Rheem units often cost his customers half the cost of competitors like Bradford White.

Easy access anode rod — This means that you can easily replace it or install a second one which can double the life expectancy of your water heater. (Here’s a good article on anode rods if you’re unfamiliar with them).

Which height is best for your home?

One important factor to consider is the height of the water heater. Most water heater manufacturers sell three different height models:

• Tall electric water heaters — 60 inches
• Medium electric water heaters — 48 inches
• Small electric water heaters — 32 inches

Price differences will vary by manufacturer. But in the case of the Rheem Performance model we reviewed earlier, here’s the difference in cost for each model:

Which warranty length is best for you?

The factor that will influence price the most is the warranty length. Most manufacturers have three options: 6, 9, and 12 year warranties. 

Using the Rheem water heater product warranty, let’s look at how the prices vary:

Best 50 gallon electric water heater

We looked at every 50 gallon electric water on the market and our favorite is the Rheem Performance 50 Gal. Electric Tank Water Heater.

This model is about $250 cheaper than the Bradford White 50 gallon electric hot water heater. And while it’s similar in price to the AO Smith 50 gallon electric water heater, we think the Rheem wins on other features (see below).

There’s no doubt: Rheem’s are well-built water heaters. As the oldest hot water heater company in America, Rheem has had a long time to work out their product issues. Their tanks are thicker and less likely to leak. Their products use less wires making it simpler to install and repair. And generally their products last longer. 

One of Rheem’s biggest selling points is the accessibility of their anode rod. This is important because it means when the rod goes out, you can repair it easily without replacing the entire hot water heater, saving you hundreds of dollars. You can also install two anode rods to effectively double the lifespan of your hot water heater.

In my BW water heater the anode rod was in the hot outlet port and wasn’t accessible without cutting the copper pipe and removing it, so I never changed it. Ultimately the most important thing is that you find a water heater that fits in your home and offers the amount of water your household needs. So if you need to cram your water heater in a small space, spend the extra money to get a short model. Otherwise, try and opt for the medium since it is the cheapest and has a similar tank size to the tall.

Warranty length — 6 year vs. 9 year vs. 12 year

The warranty length has a big impact on prices. Most manufacturers offer three different options to customers: 6 year, 9 year, and 12 year warranties. 

Once again we’ll use the Rheem water heater warranty information as our baseline and look at how prices vary depending on the warranty length.

In this case a 9 year warranty will cost an additional $180. And the 12 year option will be another $150 (or $330 more than the base model). 

But again when you buy the longer warranty you get a few extra features. The Performance plus (9 year) comes with an LED display (certainly nothing to write home about!). And the Gladiator comes with auto shut-off and leak detection which could save you some money and home damage.  

As I mentioned above, I think warranties are personal decisions that depends on your preferences. Some people like lower prices, while others like peace of mind.

Most energy-efficient water heater

How to choose a water heater for an apartment, house and cottage – which one is better and why?

Interruptions in the supply of hot water to apartment buildings during the summer are common. Scheduled repairs carried out by public utilities are delayed for more than one week. During this period, the townspeople have to forget about the usual comfort. For those who do not want to put up with the lack of hot water, experts advise installing a water heater. The variety of models of these devices on the market can confuse the average buyer. Many consumers do not know how to choose a water heater for an apartment so that there is enough warm water for all household needs. Usually the choice is between flow and storage devices. To understand which water heater is better, you need to know all the strengths and weaknesses of each type of model.

Types of water heaters

Instantaneous water heaters

Instantaneous water heater – a heater with which you can quickly get a small amount of hot water. The high performance of this type of heater allows you not to wait until the entire volume of the tank is heated. As soon as you turn on the faucet, you immediately get hot water. This is an excellent option for hot water supply, but only in the case of providing hot water from one point. Otherwise, the water flowing through the device does not have time to warm up to a comfortable temperature. Simple maintenance, long service life of the heating elements of the equipment and compact dimensions make such water heaters a convenient solution to the problem of a short-term lack of hot water supply in houses and apartments, as well as in catering establishments, schools and other socially significant facilities.

Models of instantaneous water heaters differ in performance – the volume of hot water received in one minute. Heaters with a power of 3-8 kW produce from 2 to 6 liters of heated water per minute, while the heating time is no more than 20 seconds. For the most important domestic and hygienic needs, this volume of warm water is enough. It is necessary to decide which instantaneous water heater to choose based on the needs of family members for hot water, as well as taking into account the technical capabilities of the electrical wiring in the apartment. For example, a water heater with a flow rate of 2 liters per minute is enough for a kitchen, and a flow rate of 4 liters per minute is required for a shower. After the performance required for a given room has been determined, it is correlated with the average daily water consumption and you can begin to select the appropriate model.

Recommendations for choosing : An important technical feature of any instantaneous water heater is high power, the value of which can range from 3 to 27 kW. Not all electrical wiring can withstand the connection of such equipment. Flowing water heaters with a power of 3 to 8 kW are allowed to be connected to a conventional outlet with a single-phase voltage of 220 volts. More powerful models are used in apartments with electric stoves equipped with sockets with a three-phase voltage of 380 volts.

Installation methods for instantaneous water heaters

According to the installation method, they distinguish: pressure flowing water heaters , which are built directly into the water riser, allowing you to carry out several household procedures in turn; these devices are recommended for installation in urban apartments; Non-pressure instantaneous water heaters should be located exclusively near the draw-off point, which makes them more attractive for use in summer cottages. Storage water heaters

A big disadvantage of operating all instantaneous water heaters is the high power consumption. To minimize costs, you have to use hot water very sparingly by not leaving the tap open for a long time. If you don’t want to limit yourself to anything, consider an electric storage water heater. They can be used not only in city apartments, but also in the private sector with autonomous heating and water supply systems. Depending on the number of residents and water intake points, you can choose a water heater with a volume of 10 to 150 liters. Household models have a compact body and can be installed on the wall, for example, in a kitchen set. Models with a large tank are installed on the floor.

Electric storage water heater is a heat-insulated tank of rectangular or cylindrical shape, into which water is collected and heated to the desired temperature using a built-in heating element. The heating time depends on the number of heating elements, as well as on the volume of the tank. But regardless of these parameters, upon reaching the desired temperature, the water remains hot for 2-3 hours due to effective thermal insulation. For economical consumption of electricity in storage water heaters, an intelligent temperature maintenance system is provided. Some models also offer additional features:

• rapid water heating function
• antibacterial coated tank
• manual or automated control system

The main advantage of storage water heaters over flow-through models is more economical power consumption and the ability to connect to a common 220 V outlet. At the same time, they have sufficient performance to provide several water intake points. Models with a large tank allow you to safely wash dishes, take a bath and shower for all family members at the same time.

Which water heater capacity should I choose?

Often buyers doubt about the volume, thinking about which storage water heater to choose. It is advisable to more accurately calculate the need for hot water so as not to experience a shortage of it and at the same time not to force the device to idle, heating an excess volume of liquid. You also need to take into account the fact that a larger tank takes more time to heat the water. So, in a 10-liter container, water will heat up to 45 ° C in 10 minutes, and in a 100-liter container – in 4 hours. Based on the number of water points available in the house, the approximate water consumption per person is calculated. Then the result is multiplied by the number of family members and the approximate volume of the water heater tank is obtained.

If this is a small country house or cottage, where water is not often used only in the kitchen or bathroom, then there is no need to install a three-hundred-liter heater. For intermittent use, during seasonal water outages, kitchen or flow-through single-phase models are well suited for selection. These devices are intended for service from only one water intake point. That is, hot water will go either in the bathroom or in the kitchen. As a rule, these are compact devices with a power of about 1000 W and a volume of heated liquid up to 30 liters. If it is necessary to provide two or more water intake points with hot water, then storage or instantaneous three-phase water heaters are needed. But, accordingly, the power and size of the device increase equally. The table below shows the maximum daily water consumption depending on the number of family members and location.

Also, when choosing a water heater, the availability of free space in the bathroom or toilet is taken into account. Most often, this is where these household appliances are placed. To save usable space in these rooms, you can choose horizontal placement models installed under the ceiling. Devices with a case are selected, the design of which will best fit into the interior of the room. Although manufacturers also produce built-in models that are hidden in niches under the sinks.

Instantaneous or storage water heater to choose?

In this aspect, when choosing a water heater, it is better to proceed from the main difference: do you want to receive hot water instantly, but in a small amount, or you prefer to wait, but be provided with a continuous flow of really hot water in the right amount. When you choose a water heater, pay special attention to its power, both the intensity of heating and the volume of water passing through the installation depend on it. Flow models have more power – the temperature depends on it and the pressure of the water, respectively, they are more wasteful of resources. Accumulative, thanks to the thermal insulation system, significantly save energy, therefore they are more productive. Although their dimensions are often difficult to fit into any interior, and the waiting time for heating can reach from 3 to 5 hours, as in the models of the Ariston Pro R series or Ariston Velis EVO INOX with a volume of 100 liters.
