An upholstery cleaner is a handheld machine, spray, wipe, or cream that comes to the rescue when you need to clean a spill or stain on your couch upholstery or another soft surface. When first using one, you’ll want to be thoughtful in your approach, to ensure you don’t damage your favorite pieces. “Always remember to spot test any type of cleaning method on upholstery as some steam and liquid techniques can damage fabric or coloring,” says Lauren Bowen, Director of Franchise Operations at Two Maids & A Mop. “To avoid any potential damage or color fasting, be sure to read care instructions and abide by cleaning codes.”

We researched and tested dozens of upholstery cleaners in The Lab and at home, rating each on its ease of setup, effectiveness, portability, noise level, and overall value. After analyzing our insights, we found the Bissell SpotBot Pet Portable Deep Cleaner is our favorite upholstery cleaner because it’s effective on a variety of stains, from salsa spills to crayon marks, and is easy to use and store.

Below, the best upholstery cleaners for freshening up your favorite pieces, backed by our thorough testing and research.

Bissell Spotbot Pet Review

What We Like

What We Don’t Like

What do buyers say? 91% of 4,100+ Amazon reviewers rated this product 4 stars or above.

Stubborn stains can be a real nuisance, requiring vigorous scrubbing, re-treatment, and a lot of persistence. The Bissell SpotBot Pet is specifically designed to take out stains while minimizing your hands-on effort and elbow grease, and that’s why it’s our top pick.

Our at-home tester challenged this carpet and upholstery cleaner with removing the evidence of salsa spills, crayon marks, and other stains left on the couch by kids and pets. The appliance earned a 5-star rating and saved our tester’s furniture with its effective and easy-to-use design.

Like other models in the Bissell SpotBot lineup, this version features automatic and manual cleaning modes. When cleaning dirty couch cushions, our tester used the manual mode and the included tough stain tool (which is conveniently stored on the SpotBot, along with the hose). She found it easy to use the trigger to dispense cleaning solution when necessary. Working on vertical surfaces (like the back of the couch) required a little effort to keep the cleaning solution from running down the couch. After some trial and error, our tester found it was easiest to dispense just a small amount of solution and quickly work that into the upholstery with the cleaning tool—rather than saturate a larger area.

In automatic cleaning mode, the Bissell SpotBot Pet impressed us with its hands-free cleaning ability. A motorized, rotating brush dispenses cleaning solution from the on-board tank and adjusts brush speed to thoroughly agitate carpet fibers. After six minutes on the deep clean setting, the SpotBot beeped to indicate its cleaning cycle was complete and our tester was delighted to see that the spot had disappeared. The only drawback is that this machine can only clean spots 5 to 6 inches in diameter at a time. Otherwise, it’s an easy-to-use and effective machine that’s perfect for stain-fighting pros and new users alike.

What Our Testers Say

“The Bissell Spotbot Pet unit was easy to move around the room. It has a built-in handle that we used to position it just over the spot we wanted to clean, as well as move it over to the couch. It is light enough to lift up and stow away on a shelf.”—Katie Begley, Product Tester

What We Like

What We Don’t Like

You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on an upholstery cleaner to see results. The Hoover Spotless Portable Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner is designed to provide spot-specific cleaning for furniture and carpeting, without the need for an army of attachments. It includes a multipurpose handheld cleaning tool, along with a rubber nub tool for extra agitation. If you’re looking for an excellent upholstery cleaning machine at an affordable price, this is it.

In our testing, we found that this upholstery cleaner removes and lifts stains quickly, earning it a 4-star rating in effectiveness. There was a faint stain left behind on some of the stickier substances, but with a little more elbow grease, we believe it would likely completely come up. We like that the handheld cleaning tool offers you the ability to easily scrub cushions that have become soiled or stained—and the 5-foot cleaning hose provides plenty of reach. You also don’t need to worry about bacteria and mold growing in the hose during storage, since the back of the machine features a port for flushing the hose after you’re done using it.

There are a few tradeoffs if you opt for a budget upholstery cleaner. There’s no onboard water heater or steam function, so that makes it less versatile than some of our other picks for upholstery cleaners. And while the Hoover Spotless Portable Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner does clean carpet as well as furniture, it lacks the ability to clean large areas of either one without a lot of manual effort on your part. Still, it’s a good single solution for removing stains and spills on soft surfaces in your home.

Tip

Knowing the surfaces your cleaner is compatible with is essential. Katie Berry, The Spruce’s Cleaning Review Board member, advises that upholstery cleaners should not be used on some fabrics, like velvet and velour, as they can permanently damage them. So, check the upholstery care label’s codes before using this appliance.

A handheld upholstery cleaner is a great option for cleaning furniture, pet beds, car upholstery, and more. The Bissell Pet Stain Eraser PowerBrush is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a cordless, lightweight option.

Resembling a handheld vacuum, this upholstery cleaner uses a powered brush to agitate soiled surfaces, lifting stains and dirt from fabric or carpet fibers. The 8-ounce tank—which you’ll fill with cleaning solution—is smaller than you’ll find on portable or full-size upholstery cleaners. However, it does help make it one of the lightest models on the market, at just 4.4 pounds. Plus, a built-in handle gives you the leverage and control you need to clean sofas, stairs, and car seats without the need to manage attachments and hoses. The Bissell Pet Stain Eraser PowerBrush is also cordless, giving you the ability to use it anywhere that stains or spills pop up.

One of its specific uses is cleaning up pet messes, so the single included attachment is a stationary pet brush with rubber bristles for grabbing pet hair. There are no additional attachments for purposes like reaching into crevices or underneath low pieces of furniture or seats in your car. Even still, it makes an effective grab-and-go option for cleaning up messes and it stores easily.

Expert Buying Tip

“With this type of cleaning, also known as vacuum extraction method, we introduce a solvent (water) and a surfactant (soap) to the material we want to clean. Mechanical action helps remove the stain, and the solvent and surfactant allow it to be carried away, in this instance vacuumed away. A machine with variable levels of power is optimal as you can clean heavier fabric with it on a powerful setting and then lighter fabrics on a lower setting. “—Wayne Meurice, CEO of Meurice Garment Care and CLEAN by Meurice

Folex Instant Carpet Spot Remover Review

What We Like

What We Don’t Like

If you’re searching for a spray (as opposed to an appliance) that can dissolve stains on your favorite items, Folex Instant Carpet Spot Remover is our top choice. In our experience, this budget-friendly cleaner is one that you will keep reaching for to remove all kinds of stains. Our at-home tester is a repeat buyer of the spray, which is made to treat carpet stains, as its name suggests. However, throughout the month of testing and many years of personal use, our tester used it on everything from couch upholstery to curtains. It easily dissolves coffee, grease, makeup, and wine stains, meaning you don’t need a cabinet full of cleaners to treat different kinds of stains. You may need to re-treat a stain more than once with Folex before it’s fully dissolved, but the product is cheap and easy to use, so that’s not a dealbreaker.

It’s also important to note that the formula is safe for colorfast fabrics. It’s always a good idea to test a spray on a hidden area when cleaning a new upholstery fabric, but our tester enthusiastically notes, “It is the only cleaner I trust on any new or precious upholstered furniture and rugs.”

Keep in mind that while the spray is a stain-removing superstar, it doesn’t contain enzymes to target the proteins found in pet stains, like urine. If you’re tackling those messes, turn to a pet-specific stain fighter or upholstery cleaner.

Tip

The Spruce’s Cleaning Review Board member Katie Berry says that generally rubbing stains to remove them isn’t the best technique since it can cause them to spread. Instead, you should blot or dab with an un-dyed cloth to lift the stain.

  • Won’t darken finished leather

  • Doesn’t require buffing

What We Don’t Like

  • Not safe for suede, nubuck, or unfinished leather

  • On the expensive side

Leather may not absorb all stains as easily as fabric upholstery, but it can still become dirty, stained, or dull and cracked. Steam cleaners saturate leather with too much moisture, though, and the same is true of most spray formulas. To properly preserve the appearance of your leathered pieces, use the Weiman Deep Leather Cleaner & Conditioner Cream. It’s an effective and easy-to-use product, since you don’t need to buff or rinse after applying it to your beloved surfaces. (This saves you some time and elbow grease for other tasks!)

Despite this shorter cleaning routine, the cream effectively removes dirt and residue, while also using natural oils to condition and restore the appearance of leather. When doing so, it doesn’t darken the surface color or alter the look of your furniture. It’s safe for use on finished leather, but should not be used on suede, nubuck, or unfinished leather. While we didn’t test this pick at home or in The Lab, we do love that you can also use it on shoes, bags, or car seats, making it a versatile product. In addition to the cream, Weiman also has leather conditioning wipes and sprays available, if you prefer to use that type of product.

What We Like

What We Don’t Like

The Bissell Little Green Portable Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner is not only adorable, but it’s an excellent upholstery cleaner. It weighs less than 10 pounds and is easy to carry. When we put it to work cleaning sauce and soil stains from upholstered cushions, the product’s usability really took center stage. It was easy to maneuver and features a handle, earning it a 5-star rating for portability. We also didn’t need to make a lot of adjustments or attachment swaps, which wasn’t the case with other cleaning machines we tested. When removing dirt from a cushion, the Bissell Little Green initially seemed to be spreading the dirt around. However, it cleared the mess in one minute and 15 seconds, leaving our tester “pretty impressed.”

This upholstery cleaner wasn’t as speedy at cleaning up a sticky ketchup stain—requiring about two minutes of steaming and some hands-on scraping. Our tester gave the overall cleaning experience a total of 3.5 stars for this reason. The bottom line is that you may have to put in more work to pre-treat sticky stains and spend a few extra minutes when using this upholstery cleaner, but it’s effective and compact.

Now, setting up the appliance for the first time took a little longer than expected, but this was partially due to the fact that the tester filled the wrong water tank. We can’t fault the machine for not heating up as quickly as expected (The process took about 13 minutes.), but we do feel the instructions could be clearer. If you’re on a search for a versatile upholstery cleaner, keep in mind that this one is designed for cleaning soft surfaces only. For that reason, plus the fact it only includes a single attachment, we rated it 3 stars for versatility.

If you’re looking to clean car upholstery, you could use an upholstery cleaning machine, but if the device needs to be plugged in to operate, that could limit your range of motion. Don’t worry, Armor All FRESH FX 3-in-1 Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner is here to save the day (and your stained car seats). This 22-ounce bottle contains a foaming solution that works to lift grease and grime off of your car upholstery. Plus, it comes with a removable scrub brush to help you really tackle tough stains.

The Armor All 3-in-1 cleaner cleans, lifts away stains, and eliminates odors, leaving behind a “New Car” scent. To some, the scent may be too strong, so if you’re sensitive smells, keep that in mind. We didn’t test this upholstery cleaner, but it’s key at lifting away coffee stains and dirt from a car’s interior. If you’ve got a super tough stain to remove, you might have to turn to an upholstery machine, as this cleaner doesn’t perform as well on caked-on stains. However, for the price, this cleaner and scrub brush would make great additions to your car cleaning supplies.

What We Don’t Like

We all know that pets can be messy, leaving behind hair and dirt on your favorite furniture items. Even worse, more than one chair or couch has likely been subject to your pet’s accident or vomit. Instead of banishing your four-legged friend from the couch, get the right cleaning equipment to keep your furniture clean. Keep in mind that heat is generally not recommended for most pet messes, since it can actually set stains and odors. This rules out most steam cleaners as a good pick for a pet upholstery cleaner.

The Hoover CleanSlate Pet Carpet Spot Cleaner was compared to a “water vacuum” by our product tester and it performed especially well on soiled surfaces in our testing. We prepped cushions with two different types of stains—a saucy, sticky stain and a dirty spot. Removing the soil stain was a fun experience for our product tester, who described the process like “a car wash for a cushion.” In just 1 minute and 30 seconds, the dirt was gone. It took more than a few passes (and quite a bit of solution) to remove the ketchup, but our tester still described using this upholstery cleaner as “really satisfying.” We adjusted the effectiveness score to 3 stars to reflect the extra effort required to remove a sticky stain, but it’s nothing that would hold us back from recommending this model for use as a pet stain upholstery cleaner. The manufacturer recommends pre-treating pet stains and using OXY formula in the machine in order to really rid yourself of stains and odors.

Our product tester especially liked the 7-inch wide cleaning tool, reporting that it really distributed cleaning solution and was a good choice for sofas or other large areas. This upholstery cleaner is only designed for use on soft surfaces and includes a bristle brush for reaching tight spots. Compared to other upholstery cleaners, it’s less versatile, but it was easy to use and very portable.

We Tested the Best Carpet Cleaners for Removing Dirt, Stains, and More

Final Verdict

After boiling down our testing insights and thorough research, the Bissell SpotBot Pet Portable Deep Cleaner is our top pick for an upholstery cleaner. It features a self-cleaning hose, multiple attachments, and multiple modes for cleaning your favorite surfaces with total ease. If you’re looking to spend less, the Hoover Spotless Portable Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner is another great option that quickly cleans up stains and is easy to use.

The Spruce / Ellen Lindner

To find the best upholstery cleaners for you, we spent two days rigorously testing picks at The Lab in Industry City, Brooklyn. We also tested several other models at home over the course of months, and thoroughly researched others and their specifications, features, and verified reviews. In The Lab, we started with the unboxing and setup of each cleaner, timing how long it took to prepare the product for use. We noted whether the instructions were clear or confusing. Then, we evaluated each model’s effectiveness on a tile surface and upholstered cushion, not testing products on a surface if they’re not compatible with it. On the upholstered cushion, we tasked each model with cleaning up a caked-on ketchup stain and soil stain. After noting how many passes it took to clean up a stain and working with the cleaner’s features and attachments, we rated its versatility, usability, and portability.

Could you easily carry it around? Can it be used for multiple cleaning tasks? We answered all of these questions so you don’t have to. To wrap up, we rated the noise level of each model. At home, testers rated additional picks on the same attributes after tasking them with real-world situations, like salsa spills and crayon marks. We boiled down all of our testing insights and research to the cleaners we believe are the very best.

Type

All upholstery cleaners share a common purpose, but vary in type and cleaning method. The most common type of upholstery cleaners are handheld appliances that are primarily used to spot clean furniture and carpets. They’re usually equipped with clean and dirty water tanks, and some models also heat the water for extra cleaning power. Typically, you can add a cleaning solution to the water tank during setup to help the machine tackle the mess you’re targeting.

Some handheld and upright appliances are considered carpet cleaners, while others are considered steam cleaners or upholstery cleaners. The title refers to their cleaning method and most compatible surface type, but it’s key to look at the specifications for a product as it is likely equipped to clean more than one spot in your home.

Out of the three, steam cleaners are eco-friendly, requiring only water and no cleaning concentrate. The steam produced can dissolve and lift stains from soft surfaces and many picks can also be used on hard surfaces, like tile, glass, or plastic. However, they can be more complicated to assemble and use compared to handheld upholstery cleaners. You may find that the hose or attachments become hot and sometimes drip water, too.

Aside from appliances, you can also opt for a spray, wipe, or cream. These products will require more effort to use, but may be more cost-effective if you’re cleaning small spots around your home or are treating a specific type of fabric, like leather. Just be prepared to put in more elbow grease.

Compatible Surfaces

While upholstery cleaners are designed to work on soft surfaces, be sure to check that the product you are considering is a match for the surfaces you plan to use it on. Steam cleaners will work with fabrics, carpets, and hard surfaces, in most cases. On the other hand, upholstery cleaners without steam are designed to work on just fabric or carpet, and may not be the best choice for leather or a more delicate fabric.

If you’re looking at an upholstery cleaning spray, be sure the formula is safe for use on furniture. By checking your fabric’s care label and testing the spray on a hidden area, you can avoid discoloration or other adverse effects. “Upholstered items typically have a code system,” says Lauren Bowen, Director of Franchise Operations at Two Maids & A Mop. This system usually notes what type of cleaning agent you should use when sprucing up your space. Since every machine has its own directions for use and best practices, she also adds, “It’s always a good idea to thoroughly read the directions and spot test the piece you’re cleaning.” If you have a sample of your fabric, you could also test a product there, opposed to on the actual piece of furniture.

Included Attachments

The effectiveness and usability of an upholstery cleaner can be enhanced with the use of the right attachments. Handheld and upright upholstery cleaners frequently have a hand tool for dispensing cleaning solution or agitating stains. Steam cleaners are known for coming with many attachments, including fabric steamers, brushes, and microfiber bonnets or cleaning pads that can absorb stains from your furniture.

FAQ

  • For day-to-day cleaning and keeping dust at a minimum, thoroughly vacuum the upholstery, taking the time to cover each section and cushion. If you want to address discoloration, use a handheld or upright appliance with a handheld attachment to tackle individual spots, or a spray if you’re treating an immediate spill or tiny stain.

Wayne Meurice, CEO of Meurice Garment Care and CLEAN by Meurice, notes that commercial machines typically have a variety of tools they use to “deliver and remove the solvent, or water,” in addition to a variety of suction levels. We noticed this in our testing, as several appliances came with attachments you can use to achieve a different clean. “Besides the equipment, there is a level of expertise required to determine what origin stains are and what best solutions, products, or combinations are best to remove the stains.” If you’re unsure, you’ll want to consult with an expert to make sure your method is most effective and safe for the fabric and stain you’re working with, as well as the fabric’s cleaning codes.

When using a spray, start by blotting up the moisture with a clean cloth. Then, apply a small amount of the cleaner and continue blotting (or gently scrubbing, if needed) to remove the stain. No matter which type of upholstery cleaner you use, always let the fabric dry completely and away from direct sunlight, before using it again.

  • To minimize dust and remove crumbs, hair, and any other debris from the fibers of the fabric, weekly vacuuming is recommended. However, if you notice stains and discoloration in one area, or when liquid spills onto the material, address it as soon as possible with a spot treatment.

As for deeper cleans with an upholstery cleaner, steam cleaner, or professional service, once or twice per year is ideal.

  • If you have leather, suede, velvet, or microfiber furniture at home, you’ll want to be careful about the products you use to clean it. “Non-porous surfaces can be sprayed with a cleanser then wiped clean,” says Meurice. Liquid formulas with acetone or bleach might cause discoloration or affect the texture of the material.

Meurice recommends using an anionic, gentle, wet cleaning detergent on upholstery because this type of detergent does not need to be rinsed and is safe to use on almost all fabrics. “Detergents and additional bleaches and stain removers are contingent on the fabrics you are cleaning,” he says. “What is safe on a white Sunbrella or microfiber material will destroy a wool mohair.”

American-made furniture should have a tag on it with a proper cleaning code, as well, helping to guide you in your cleaning endeavors. These codes include: W, S, W-S, or X. W means you should use water-based cleaners only. S means a water-free solvent can be used. W-S stands for water-based solvents, and X is a sign to avoid all household cleaning products and consult with a professional. When in doubt, test a small patch in a hidden spot, before using a cleaner on a larger area.

  • Many upholstery cleaners can be used on multiple surfaces, though it can vary from one product to the next. For instance, steam cleaners, upright appliances, and other machine options are typically suitable for cleaning carpets, curtains, and sometimes hard flooring.

Additionally, multi-surface liquid formulas can often be used on carpets as well as drapes, car interiors, car seats, and strollers. Be sure to check the intended use, before using a product to clean any surface.

Depending on the type, steam cleaners tackle dirt, grime, and messes on both soft and hard surfaces, indoors and outdoors. Here’s an overview of the types of steam cleaners available on the market, along with information about how they function for cleaning upholstery.

  • Handheld steam cleaners make upholstery cleaning easy as users simply hold the steamer units adjacent to the upholstered furniture and move them along the surface.
  • Vacuum-type steam cleaners facilitate the cleaning of floors and carpets, but many of them feature reconfiguration capability, breaking down into handheld units that work well for upholstery. Users move the handheld units along the surface of upholstery fabric for cleaning.
  • Vapor steam cleaners utilize steam from water heated to at least 240 to 260 degrees Fahrenheit, resulting in a low-moisture vapor that leaves minimal residual dampness. Vapor steam cleaners utilize higher temperatures than many other steam cleaners do.
  • Cylinder steam cleaners (also known as canister steam cleaners) feature steam hoses attached to the rolling cylinders or canisters that hold large-capacity water tanks for extended steam-cleaning time. Attachments for the steam hoses facilitate upholstery cleaning as users move them along the surface.
  • Garment steam cleaners feature handheld nozzles on the ends of steam hoses that attach to water tanks. The steam loosens and lifts dirt, deodorizes, and freshens upholstery fabrics on furniture as well as clothing.

Size and Weight

Consider how you plan on using your steam cleaner to determine the ideal size and weight. Larger and heavier models offer the capacity for heavy-duty cleaning and extensive cleaning sessions, while small and lightweight units offer the advantages of portability and convenience for quick cleanups.

For example, canister models are considerably larger and weigh more than handheld steam cleaners, but they offer the advantage of large-capacity water tanks that deliver continuous steam for anywhere between 30 and 90 minutes. On the other hand, a small handheld steamer weighs much less than a canister or vacuum type, but it holds less water and produces steam for only a few minutes before it requires refilling.

Corded vs. Cordless

Most steam cleaners operate on corded electrical power from standard household outlets. After the electrical power source heats the water in the cleaner’s water tank to above 212 degrees Fahrenheit, creating steam, the pressurized steam is forced through a hose or a nozzle, delivering powerful cleaning action to household surfaces.

Some steam cleaners include extra-long power cords for enhanced maneuverability, allowing users to access hard-to-reach places throughout the home for cleaning and sanitizing.

While not as common as corded models, cordless steam cleaners operate on rechargeable batteries, typically 18-volt lithium-ion, to offer extra convenience and portability.

Power and Runtime

Battery runtime is not an issue for most steam cleaners, as corded electricity is the predominant power source. For those few cordless steam cleaners on the market, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries provide power. A fully charged battery delivers approximately 20 minutes of cordless runtime for a steam cleaner.

For corded, electric steam cleaners, the runtime is associated with the volume of water held in their tanks. Larger water tanks in canister models may produce steam for up to 90 minutes of continuous cleaning. Alternatively, the small water tanks in lightweight, handheld steam cleaners produce enough steam for approximately 8 to 10 minutes of runtime. Of course, the tanks may be refilled as often as necessary for continuous cleaning.

Heating time is another feature to consider. Related to the volume capacity of the water tanks and the power of the heating elements, heating times vary from approximately 30 seconds to 12 minutes. A faster heating time means that the water converts to steam more quickly, allowing the user to jump right into the task at hand.

Steam Settings

In the process of selecting the best steam cleaner for upholstery, shoppers may also want to consider their needs for a steamer that is capable of accomplishing other cleaning tasks. Many steam cleaners offer versatility via low, medium, and high steam pressure settings. Users can adjust the settings to facilitate cleaning various surfaces and accomplishing either light freshening jobs or the tough removal of stuck-on dirt, grime, and stains.

Cleaning upholstery requires low to medium steam pressure, depending on the type of fabric and the degree of soil. Delicate upholstery fabric should be steam-cleaned on the lowest steam setting. Thicker, more durable fabric can tolerate a medium steam setting, especially if tough stains and stuck-on messes present cleaning challenges. Manufacturers of some steam cleaners recommend their use on leather upholstery, but users should check manufacturers’ information before using steam cleaners on leather furniture.

Alternatively, users can adjust the steam pressure settings to medium or high for cleaning hard surfaces. High-pressure steam works well on tile, grout, granite, stainless steel, and sealed flooring. Keep in mind that using a high-pressure setting will cause the steam to run out more quickly, resulting in the need to refill the water tank.

Tank Capacity

Every steam cleaner contains a water tank with a heating element that heats the water above 212 degrees Fahrenheit to produce steam. Handheld units include tanks that generally hold about 6 to 8 ounces of water for steam production. These are lightweight and easy to handle, but they produce steam for only about 8 to 10 minutes before the small water tanks run dry. Handheld steam cleaners are ideal for quick touch-ups and brief everyday cleaning chores.

On the other hand, users sometimes need to tackle cleaning jobs that require extended steam- producing runtimes. For these tasks, larger steam cleaners with increased water-tank capacities fill the bill.

Canister or cylinder steam cleaners feature larger water tanks that usually hold about 40 to 54 ounces of water. Heating the larger volumes of water to build up steam, these types of steam cleaners can deliver up to 90 minutes of continuous steam for extended cleaning sessions.

Maneuverability

When steam-cleaning upholstery, users must maneuver the steam-releasing units over and under the curved surfaces of furniture and into cracks and crevices. For this reason, steam cleaners with long power cords as well as extension hoses with easy to hold nozzles make the job easier. Maneuverability is a particularly valuable feature for reaching into a vehicle to clean car interiors, which are susceptible to accumulating dirt and debris.

Some steam cleaners offer power cords up to 18 feet long and steam hoses up to 8 feet long. With these features, users can direct the steam to hard-to-reach places for accurate targeting of dirt and grime.

A canister or a cylinder steam cleaner with a long extension hose allows users to reach into nooks and crannies. Alternatively, a lightweight handheld steamer with a long power cord provides up-close and targeted cleaning power.

Attachments

Many steam cleaners include attachments to facilitate cleaning a variety of objects and materials. Some common attachments include steam hoses, straight nozzles, angled nozzles, metal brushes, nylon brushes, window squeegees, mop pads, and scrapers.

For steam-cleaning upholstery, nylon brushes, steam hoses, and angled nozzles work particularly well, allowing users to maneuver the steam over, under, and around curved surfaces.

Shoppers looking for steam cleaners that can accomplish a range of cleaning jobs beyond sanitizing upholstery should take note of what attachments, if any, are included with each available steam cleaner.

Tips for Steam Cleaner Use

Some people do not know how to use a steam cleaner and could damage it when cleaning furniture.

To keep the steamer useful for a long time, here are some tips:

  • Distilled water –  Distilled water is the best because it has minerals that will accumulate in your steamer, unlike tap water.
  • Test before cleaning the new surface – To avoid an allergic reaction on the skin, it is wise to test a new cream on a small scale. This is the same way you should test your steamer when rinsing a new surface type.
  • Always rinse the cleaner – To preserve it, clean it after each use. Use distilled water if you can.

The Concept Of The Steam Cleaner

How does the steam cleaner work?  The vapor from a steam cleaner allows you to deodorize and sanitize your couch without chemicals. Surface dirt is loosened and dissolved when high-temperature steam is applied to it, and the process of giving the fabric’s color a little brightening effect.

Before you begin, vacuum first which will loosen stains and lift debris. You can start steaming afterward by connecting the appropriate attachment based on what you need.

Fill the tank with water and wait for the device to heat up, Use a mop to remove residue.

Steam cleaners can act as disinfectants and reach high pressures and temperatures to kill germs and bacteria.

A steam cleaner can be used on microfiber. Choose a temperature for the material and the amount of steaming to be used. However, to make the steaming easier, use a vacuum or a lint roller to lift the debris.

Steam cleaning also helps remove insects.

Types of upholstered furniture steam cleaners

The ability of steam cleaners to remove stains, dust, and mites is unmatched. There are many types of steam cleaners, and by knowing this, it will be easier for you to pick the one that’s right for you.

Here are a few that we have taken time test for you:

  1. Handheld Steam Cleaner For Couch

This steamer remove dirt and various stains. It is light, portable, and easy to carry. They can sanitize upholstery, nice pieces, and various fabrics. The steamer requires needs a cup of water to make enough steam for stain removals from your furniture.

  1. Steam Vacuum Cleaner

This is basic a vacuum cleaner that makes steam; it can be used for carpets, floors, furnishings, and upholstery. It would do you well to go through the user manual before you start using this steamer as there are different variations of this machine.

  1. Vapor Steam Cleaner

This cleaner removes dirt from surfaces and dries them. Vapor steam cleaners have various attachments and features, so they can clean different objects, coverings, and floorings. Vapor steamers are good for homes with children and pets, as its drying effect makes the environment safe. The downside is that a big space is required for storage, so it may be difficult for homes without space to store vapor steamers.

  1. Garment Steam Cleaners

This is a portable steamer that is used to remove wrinkles from various types of garments. This steamer should always be used on surfaces capable of handling high temperatures, and being careful not to over steam your appliance.

Advantages of Steam Cleaning

The great thing about steamers is that they do not require detergent or chemicals to clean up stains. It uses steam and nothing else. The heat from steam makes the dirt humid, which absorbs the oil with a hot towel.

Steam cleaning also helps with dust mite control. Temperature as high as 1300F kills dust mites, and the steam that comes off from most cleaners is usually over 2000F. This does not mean that dust mites won’t return as steaming is not a preventive measure. You should steam your couch and mattresses every seven weeks.

Disadvantages of Steam Cleaning

  • High-temperature heat – The temperature of the steam generated by the steamer can be high. This is a safety concern for many people.
  • Time of warm-up – Some machines take longer to warm up. The wise thing to do is to read online reviews of the product you want before you buy it.
  • More expensive – The high price is an issue, but worth it in the long run.

Yes. The vapor form a dry-steam cleaner will deodorize and sanitize your sofa. Dissolves surface grime, enhancing colors as well.

There are many cleaning heads that come with steam cleaner devices. If your appliance’s maker has advised the use of a specific cleaning head for upholstery, then use it.

What Is The Best Steam Cleaner For My Couch?

The Bissell 3624 is a product that checks off all the right boxes when it comes to steam cleaners, as it can remove difficult stains, can reach areas that would be difficult to reach, has a long power cord, and comes with a bunch of attachments for all your steam cleaning needs.

Can I Use a Steam Cleaner on Wood Furniture?

Steam cleaners use regular tap water to produce high-temperature steam vapor that is a powerful deep-cleaning agent. They apply heat to do this. Heating water at 225 degrees F will kill bacteria. Avoid using steam cleaners if you have an object that can be harmed by high heat (over 225 degrees F).

How Long Does Steam Take to Kill Bacteria?

A steam cleaner can kill most viruses and germs, or with steam if it’s hot enough. Bacteria, viruses, and more are 99 percent destroyed when steam makes direct contact with them for three minutes as long as the 175- and 212-degrees Fahrenheit. Higher temperatures are better.

Can a Steam Cleaner Kill Bed Bugs?

Steam can kill bed bugs at any phase if you use it right.  The quality of the steam cleaner is vital when using steam as a treatment.

Your surface temperature should reach 160-180 degrees F. Bed bugs can withstand temperatures below 160 degrees. When temperatures climb over 180 degrees, you could damage your sofa.

Hand-held steam cleaners have an infrared thermometer. It will help you measure surface temperatures. The rate at which you move the wand controls the temperature. When you move the wand slow, you’ll get a low temperature. If it’s too high, move the wand faster.

Do Steam Cleaners Also Vacuum?

It is not advisable use steam cleaners as vacuum cleaners. It depends on the model. Not all steam cleaners can vacuum. The role of a steam cleaner for couch is to disinfect and sanitize.

Because it liquefies the dirt, a steam cleaner does a decent job of vacuuming light dirt, but you must keep in mind that the machine will turn dirt into mud, so most of the time, it is hard to extract the dirt from the tank. In order to dispose of the dirty water, you want to keep the amount of solid waste to a minimum.

For the greatest results, start by using a vacuum cleaner and then use a steam cleaner.

Can I Use Carpet Shampooer On My Couch?

You can clean couch upholstery with a carpet shampooer. Remember, a carpet shampooer is a steam vacuum.

Can I Use A DIY Homemade Steam Cleaner Solution?

Yes, you can. All you need is hydrogen peroxide, hot water, and dish soap. Mix the ingredients and put the solution in your steam cleaner and watch the magic happen.

Upholstery Steam Cleaner Conclusion

Steam cleaners aren’t cheap. If you live in a house with several people or in a co-op environment, a steam would be a good investment. If you live alone or you do not have children or pets, then a steam cleaner would be waste of money. Renting a steam cleaner can cost $1,000 or more.

Owning a steam cleaner for couch can give you a sense of ease knowing that your furniture will last longer. You’ll need to keep your steam cleaner free of dirt and dust, but with home furniture preservation, it’s worth it.

Different couch cleaning tool are available, but steam cleaners are the most reliable for quality work. The steam cleaner makes cleaning easier and saves time and effort.

5 Best Upholstery Steam Cleaners of 2022

I love a cream colored sofa. They are light, chic, beachy, and when I see a family with small kids or pets with a clean, cream colored sofa I think to myself, “wow, they really have it together.” A beautiful cream sofa felt both aspirational and unattainable to me as a mom with two small (messy) boys.

You see, I am a woman who wants to be a chill, effortless mom and hostess but deep deep down cringes with every spill and stain. I wasn’t sure that I could handle the stress of keeping a cream colored sofa clean… That was before I learned about upholstery steam cleaners.

Upholstery steam cleaners are a GIFT to pet parents, small child parents, or just regular adult people who sometimes spill food on their sofas while watching TV. In a matter of minutes, deep, dark stains can be lifted from upholstery with the power of steam.

If you have upholstered sofas, dining chairs, drapery, mattresses, or car upholstery that needs cleaning or spot treating on a regular basis then it’s time for you to invest in an upholstery steam cleaner. In this post I am sharing five of the best upholstery steam cleaners on the market.

This machine is great for handling concentrated stains. Pet accidents, child accidents, food spills, crayon marks, and more. This steam cleaner works best on stains set on a flat surface (e.g. carpet or a seat cushion). Simply place the Bissell SpotBot on the stain, choose a clean setting, and walk away for 6 minutes while the machine does the cleaning for you.

For fresh or lighter stains you can choose a quick clean setting. For older, more set in stains there is a deep clean option. This steam cleaner is relatively lightweight at less than 13 pounds, making it easy to carry around the house as needed.

I like that there is also a hose cleaning attachment so you can clean vertical surfaces like the backrest or back cushions on a sofa or chair. Ultimately what I like best about this cleaner is how effective it is at removing stains. With little to no effort, you can remove stains from any upholstered or carpeted item in your home.

Pros:

  • Best for hands free spot cleaning
  • Self cleaning hose
  • Quick clean and deep clean settings

Cons:

  • Hose attachment has a narrow cleaning path
  • Main machine cleans only one 5-6 inch spot at a time
  • Hose attachment will become brittle after heavy use

Specs:

  • Dimensions (L x W x H): 9 x 17 x 13. 5 inches
  • Weight: 12.5 pounds
  • Capacity: 30.6 ounces
  • Cord Length: 16 Feet
  • Surfaces: Upholstery, carpet, stairs

The Hoover CleanSlate Plus is the lowest cost steam cleaner that will effectively remove stains from your sofa. This machine is very lightweight at only 9 pounds making it super convenient to carry from room to room.

I love that the hose is self cleaning. This feature will minimize bad odors and bacteria from building up inside the hose between uses. With that said, one of the main complaints in customer reviews is that Hoover does not sell a replacement hose. Steam cleaner hoses tend to wear out more quickly than the machine itself so it’s nice to have the option to replace it in the future if needed.

There aren’t any frills or fancy attachments but I don’t think those are necessary here. If you want a machine that is simple to use and effective at removing stains for a budget-friendly price, then this is the steam cleaner for you.

Pros:

  • Budget-friendly and effective
  • Lightweight for easy portability
  • 5 foot self cleaning hose

Cons:

  • Minimal attachments
  • Can’t buy replacement hoses if leaks or damage occurs

Specs:

  • Dimensions (L x W x H): 9.72 x 13.94 x 15.04 inches
  • Weight: 9 pounds
  • Capacity: 51 ounces (clean and dirty water)
  • Cord Length: 14 feet
  • Surfaces: Carpet, upholstery

We all know that the sooner we tackle a stain, the more likely we are to successfully remove it. But if we have to dig through a cluttered closet or garage to find the right cleaning tool, then we are less likely to tackle a fresh stain right then and there.

This is where the Bissell Pet Stain Eraser shines. It’s a cordless, compact machine that is easy to grab and use as soon as a stain occurs. At only 4.4 pounds, this handheld upholstery steamer is light enough for kids to use (and maybe even clean up after their own spills…).

Not only is this stain eraser great for lifting kid and pet stains, the bristles in the brush attachment also effectively remove pet hair from upholstered surfaces as you clean.

The only tradeoff for the cordless, lightweight features of this machine is a narrow 3 inch cleaning path and a shorter runtime. Battery will last about 20 minutes so this is not the solution for larger steam cleaning projects.

Pros:

  • Cordless (rechargeable lithium ion battery)
  • Lightweight

Cons:

  • Small capacity
  • Short runtime
  • Must use with Bissell Oxy cleaning solution

Specs:

  • Dimensions (L x W x H): 16. 46 x 5.67 x 8.5 inches
  • Weight: 4.4 pounds
  • Capacity: 8 ounces
  • Cord Length: Cordless
  • Run Time: 20 minutes
  • Surfaces: Carpet, upholstery

The Bissell Little Green Upholstery Cleaner is less than 10 pounds and is easy to store. The narrow brush nozzle is only 3 inches so this isn’t a machine you will grab for large surface area projects. It’s best when used to clean tight crevices like the corners of a sofa or the upholstery in a car.

It’s a simple design with only one brush attachment. Some customers complained that the hose wore out faster than they expected. Luckily, replacement hoses and brush heads are easy to find.

Overall, this little machine is powerful enough to clean things like seat cushions, sofa cushions, and small area rugs with ease.

Pros:

  • Self cleaning hose
  • Lightweight and portable
  • Narrow 3 inch cleaning path is good for reaching into small corners and crevices

Cons:

  • Not good for cleaning large areas
  • Only one attachment
  • Brush head requires detailed cleaning to minimize odors

Specs:

  • Dimensions (L x W x H): 8.25 x 17.25 x 12.5 inches
  • Weight: 9.65 Pounds
  • Capacity: 48 ounces
  • Cord Length: 15 feet
  • Surfaces: Upholstery, carpet

The Rug Doctor Pet Portable Spot Cleaner is one of the strongest when it comes to suction among these upholstery steam cleaners. Customers love that it arrives fully assembled and ready to use right out of the box. Plus the hose attachment on this machine is sturdier and longer lasting than many Bissell competitor machines.

This upholstery steamer works best on recent pet stains but will do a great job at lifting older, more set stains as well. With that said, it’s still a good idea to pre-treat older stains prior to cleaning with the Rug Doctor Pet Portable Upholstery Spot Cleaner.

Reviewers suggest cleaning the area once with an upholstery or carpet cleaning solution, then refilling the machine with hot water and steaming the area one more time. Doing this will help remove residual cleaning solution from the upholstered surface. It will also leave your furniture or carpet feeling softer and less stiff from the cleaning solution.

Pros:

  • Sturdy hose attachment lasts longer than Bissell competitor machines
  • Dual action brush head picks up pet hair and cleans up accidents and spills
  • Easy to roll from room to room with extendable handle and wheels

Cons:

  • Heavier and bulkier than competitor machines
  • Water canisters do not sit flat for refilling with cleaning solution or water
  • Handle is awkward for using to clean floor pans in a car

Specs:

  • Dimensions (L x W x H): 16. 02 x 10.94 x 15.63 inches
  • Weight: 18.86 pounds
  • Capacity: 64 ounces
  • Cord Length: 15 feet
  • Surfaces: Upholstery, carpet

Helpful Considerations Before Purchasing

Before you make your final purchase decision it’s important to consider your needs and weigh them against product features.

Design

Handheld upholstery steam cleaners are great for spot cleaning carpets and upholstery. Upright upholstery steam cleaners are better for carpeted flooring or large rugs where you’re cleaning a large surface area.

You want to make sure your upholstery steam cleaner has separate compartments for clean and dirty water. Most will allow you to add a cleaning solution for a more powerful result, but you can always start by steam cleaning with plain water for lighter stains or regular cleaning.

Surface Compatibility

Different steam cleaners are manufactured for different surfaces. Some steamers are meant to release wrinkles and smells from clothing or drapery. Others are designed to primarily clean tile or glass surfaces but come with upholstery attachments. Upholstery steam cleaners (like the ones on this list) are meant to spot clean rugs, carpeting, and upholstered furniture or car interiors.

If you do plan on steam cleaning your upholstered sofas and chairs, take a minute to first check for a care tag. If you can locate it, many upholstered furniture care tags will include a letter code for how to treat stains:

  • W: Only water-based cleaning agents should be used.
  • S: Only solvent-based cleaning agents should be used.
  • S/W: Both water- and solvent-based cleaning agents are safe to use.
  • X: Never use water- or solvent-based cleaning agents. Only clean by vacuuming or light brushing.

Understanding the care requirements of your upholstery and other surfaces in your home will help you make a more informed purchase decision.

Portability

If you live in a house with lots of stairs then portability might be a priority for you. Check the weight and size of the upholstery steam cleaner prior to purchasing. Options that can be rolled throughout your house on wheels (like the Rug Doctor Pet Portable Spot Cleaner) might also work well.

The tradeoff for a lightweight more portable machine is capacity. Smaller capacity means  more frequent refills of the water/solution tank during or between jobs, which can be inconvenient and time-consuming.

Capacity and Runtime

Speaking of capacity, most upholstery steam cleaners are corded which means they plug in and don’t lose power like a cordless battery powered steamer will. Because of this, the “runtime” is usually going to depend on the capacity of your upholstery steam cleaner.

Determine what type of steam cleaning jobs you need to tackle. One small job at a time? Or a full house steam clean a few times a year? Knowing how you like to clean can help you determine what capacity would be most convenient for you.

Accessories

Upholstery steam cleaners typically come with at least one hose and brush head attachment. Others come with multiple attachments for various cleaning jobs. It’s important to know whether or not attachments are easily replaceable before making a purchase.

Upholstery steam cleaner hoses tend to wear down far more quickly than the machine itself so replacements will likely be necessary at some point down the road.

Best Practices for Using an Upholstery Steam Cleaner

Before adding any steam or moisture, it’s always a good idea to vacuum the surface and remove loose, dry debris first. Adding steam on top of dirt or other debris will create a bigger mess to clean.

If the stain is wet, start by scraping off what you can. Then soak up excess moisture by pressing it with a cleaning rag or towel first.

For older stains it’s a good idea to apply a pre-treatment prior to steam cleaning. Let the pre-treatment activate on the stain for 10-15 minutes (following manufacturer instructions).

Now apply steam and vacuum excess moisture using your upholstery steam cleaner. Run the brush attachment over the stain slowly and repeatedly until the stain has lifted.

I like to do a second pass over treated areas with my upholstery steam cleaner and water (no commercial cleaning solution). Doing this will remove any residue left behind from the cleaning solution. It will also leave the fibers of your upholstered furniture or carpet feeling softer and less stiff.

Note: It might go without saying, but always test a small area in an inconspicuous location before steam cleaning your favorite furniture or rugs.

FAQ’S

What surfaces can a steam cleaner be used on?

Upholstery steam cleaners (like the ones listed in this article) are best used to clean and remove stains from upholstered furniture, carpets, drapery, and car upholstery.

Garment steamers are best used on clothing to remove wrinkles and release some smells. These are not used for stain removal.

Lastly, there are high temperature steam cleaners that are manufactured to clean hard, sealed surfaces. Think ceramic tile, grout, granite countertops, windows and mirrors, appliances, and more. These high temperature steam cleaners can remove heavy grime and even kill bugs on upholstered furniture or mattresses.

Do upholstery steam cleaners require chemicals to clean?

Considering the fact that water is technically a chemical… the short answer to this question is yes. However, when it comes to more complex chemical cleaning solutions you have a choice. Using commercial cleaning solutions will render more dramatic, impressive, and successful results. But of course, you do not HAVE to use cleaning solutions with an upholstery steam cleaner.

An approach I like to use when removing stains is to first go over stains with an Oxy fabric cleaning solution in my upholstery steamer. Then I do a second pass with just water to remove any residual cleaning solution. This two step process leaves me with softer fabric/carpet and a cleaner result without any residue.

Should I fill my steam cleaner with hot or cold water?

Read the instruction manual for your upholstery steam cleaning machine to confirm. Most machines recommend using lukewarm or cool water.

Can a steam cleaner kill bed bugs?

Yes. A steam cleaner that can reach very high temperatures (like the McCulloch MC1275 Heavy-Duty Steam Cleaner) will kill bed bugs. None of the upholstery steamers on this list advertise the ability to reach the temperatures required to do this.

How long should upholstery be steam cleaned in one spot?

It usually isn’t a good idea to let upholstery steam cleaner hose heads sit in the same spot for a long time. Typically you’re going to want to keep it moving slowly and steadily – much like an iron. Other steam spot cleaners like the Bissell SpotBot are a “set it and forget it” design. You can set the machine over the top of a specific stain and let it run automatically for 5-6 minutes before removing it.

The 5 Best Steam Cleaners For Couches

Whether you have kids or pets, or sometimes eat dinner while watching TV, your couch can see a lot of wear and tear — but the right steam cleaner can keep your sofa looking brand new. Available in handheld, full-size, and convertible options, the best steam cleaners for couches use high-temperature water vapor to clean upholstery and remove stains, and they come with attachments that let you use them on multiple other surfaces throughout your home.

How Steam Cleaners Work

The key components to any steam cleaner include a reservoir and an internal boiler that heats water in order to produce a low-moisture vapor that softens stuck-on stains and messes, but won’t leave fabric overly damp. For the best results with a sofa, run a vacuum over the surface first to remove any debris, then slowly pass the steam cleaner over the targeted area. If you have especially stubborn stains or spills to clean, you may need to agitate the area with a brush or a cloth before wiping it away, and most steam cleaners come with accessories to help with this.

What To Consider When Shopping For Steam Cleaners For Couches

Versatility

Much like vacuums, the best upholstery cleaners for sofas come in a range of styles, and your choice will partially depend on how much versatility you want. While most options can take on a variety of surfaces besides couches, if you want something that can also clean floors, an upright or canister model will be your best bet.

Of the two, a canister cleaner will generally have a longer run time, thanks to its larger tank, but keep in mind that the two-piece construction can be somewhat cumbersome. An upright model, on the other hand, may be easier to maneuver and can usually be detached into two pieces, which means you can use it as a portable upholstery cleaner for your sofa — but note that the run time will be shorter, as you’ll have to refill the smaller water reservoir. If, however, you don’t care about steam cleaning your floors, you can get away with a simple handheld machine that’ll ring up at a lower price point.

You’ll also want to check out the included accessories. Microfiber cloths (a must for cleaning upholstery), brushes, crevice tools, and squeegees make your steam cleaner a versatile tool for tackling every corner of your living space, including the kitchen, bathroom, windows, and other sealed surfaces.

Run Time

The length of time your steam cleaner will run is based on the volume of the water tank and the flow rate. Some steam cleaners have adjustable output levels, so expect a shorter run time if you’re using it on the maximum output. If you plan to clean multiple back-to-back areas of your home, opt for a model that will let you do this without refilling the tank for maximum efficiency.

Heating Time

The time it takes for a cleaner to heat up varies, with some models boasting super fast heat-up times of under 10 seconds and other heavy-duty machines that can take up to 10 minutes. Think about whether you want to clean on-demand when messes happen, or if you prefer to schedule cleanings and don’t mind the extra wait time.

No matter what state your couch is in, there’s a steam cleaner to help keep it looking great for years to come — and it’s much cheaper than professional sofa cleaning. With all that, here are five of the best steam cleaners for couches.

How to clean furniture with a steam cleaner, how to properly clean a sofa without damaging the coating

Cleaning furniture, especially upholstered furniture, is one of the most troublesome moments of any cleaning. Dust and dirt clog deep, the complex shape of the furniture does not allow standard nozzles to remove them, and a conventional vacuum cleaner is not enough to refresh surfaces and clean stains. A steam cleaner comes to the rescue: its functions will not be enough to remove deep dirt, but it will do an excellent job of hygienically cleaning the surface and help refresh the upholstery.

How a steam cleaner works

The question of how to clean a sofa with a steam cleaner becomes clearer when you understand how this device works. After filling with water, it heats it for some time and converts it into hot steam, then contaminated surfaces are treated with this steam. The steam jet comes out of the nozzle under pressure, penetrates deep into the layer of dirt and softens them – even difficult stains can be easily wiped off with a brush, napkin or a special nozzle. Steam cleaners are used to clean kitchen appliances such as stoves or hoods, plumbing fixtures, and hard floors. With the help of a special lining, they can refresh the carpet. The devices perfectly cope with plaque, greasy stains and old dirt. Hot steam kills up to 99.99% of harmful microorganisms on hard surfaces: with a steam cleaner, the house becomes truly clean. Another advantage of this approach is the absence of the need for household chemicals. You do not need to use aggressive products and waste time on their long-term washing.

Is it possible to clean furniture with a steam cleaner

As standard, a steam cleaner is suitable for cleaning a variety of hard surfaces: walls and floors, household appliances, sanitary ware and sanitary ceramics. This is an indispensable assistant in the kitchen or bathroom, when cleaning floors, but in the case of furniture, many users have questions.

Solid furniture . Like other hard surfaces, it can be cleaned with hot steam. There is only one condition: the material from which the coating is made must withstand high temperature and humidity. For example, a steam cleaner is unlikely to be suitable for cleaning a wooden shelf due to the wood’s vulnerability to moisture. However, for such surfaces, steam cleaning is usually not needed: all the dirt on them is easily removed with a vacuum cleaner. But the kitchen work area, which, as a rule, has a polymer coating, can be processed with steam: the cabinets in the kitchen were made with the expectation of high humidity and temperature. In addition, pollution in the kitchen requires the use of special tools.

Upholstered furniture . The situation is a little more complicated with sofas, armchairs, mattresses and other soft objects. A steam cleaner can be used to clean them, but it will not work to completely get rid of complex contaminants. It is suitable for freshening upholstery, coping with light stains and returning the item to its original color. Yes, in more complex cases, you will need to use other means, but for most everyday tasks, refreshing with a steam cleaner is enough.

How to clean furniture with a steam cleaner

For successful cleaning, you need to remember the peculiarities of the steam cleaner. Unlike washing vacuum cleaners and steam vacuum cleaners, the device is not equipped with a suction mechanism, which means that some dirt will need to be removed manually. The steam cleaner can only refresh the furniture and get rid of local stains thanks to the point nozzles and brushes.

Preparing . It is not difficult to manage the steam cleaner: all recommendations are given in the instructions. You will need to pour water into the tank – this way you can avoid stains on the treated surface. Upholstered furniture itself should be vacuumed or cleaned with another dry cleaning method before steaming. The steam cleaner does not remove dust, its presence will impair cleaning results.

Nozzle . Steam cleaners “Karcher” are supplied with different components, their exact number depends on the chosen model and configuration. Some of them include a carpet cleaning pad – for large surfaces, such as the seat of a sofa, you can use it. However, in general, a variety of manual nozzles are recommended for upholstered furniture: they will help to clean even objects of complex shape without discomfort. For processing hard-to-reach places, such as cracks, a special nozzle of a small size is suitable. Choose the option depending on how it will be more convenient for you to process a particular piece of furniture.

Tool . One of the advantages of Karcher steam cleaners is that there is no need for a cleaning solution. This ensures greater hygiene and environmental friendliness of cleaning: drain water is not contaminated with chemicals, the likelihood that one of the family members will suffer due to an aggressive agent is reduced to zero. For washing vacuum cleaners, a special solution is used; in the case of steam cleaners, it is not recommended to use it. Remember that the device is not intended for deep cleaning of upholstered furniture. First, test it on an inconspicuous area of the upholstery: check how the surface reacts to steam so as not to spoil it in a visible place.

Procedure . Processing occurs sequentially to prevent excessive accumulation of moisture in the upholstery. Areas that are more heavily soiled than others can be treated twice. Before cleaning, you will need to remove all objects from the sofa or chair. The process itself is simple: sweep the surface with the nozzle of the cleaner, from which hot steam escapes. It is better to move from the center to the edges, from top to bottom. Remember that upholstered furniture absorbs moisture well, and try not to go overboard with it.

After cleaning . Furniture will need to be left for a while and provide conditions for it to dry quickly. To do this, you can use an air conditioner or a fan, or open a window to ventilate: if the air circulates around the room, the fabric dries faster. The steam cleaner will need to be turned off, drain the remaining water and clean the nozzle. Then you will need to remove the lagging dirt with a fiber or brush. If stains remain on the pile of furniture after this, you can try to remove them with a washing vacuum cleaner.

Other ways to clean furniture

Steam vacuum cleaners allow you to freshen up a sofa or chair and collect dust from it at the same time, without using two devices at once. If you need a complete cleaning of upholstered furniture, your choice is a washing vacuum cleaner. It will allow you to penetrate the entire length of the upholstery pile and remove even deep dirt.

Once the dirt is dissolved by the action of steam, it can be easily removed with a special rag, so that there will be no drips and streaks after cleaning.

In the event that the surface of the furniture has strong stains, for example, old grease stains, then it is quite possible to use the most common shampoo or detergent for cleaning carpets, upholstered furniture. Try to use neutral products that will not damage the upholstery when cleaning. For furniture with light-colored upholstery, it is best to use filtered or settled water so that no yellow spots remain on the surface. It is quite possible to add a small amount of a special agent to the water, which is intended for cleaning upholstered furniture.

During cleaning, make sure that the steam is supplied and do not linger in one place, otherwise the furniture will become wet , and spots or stains may appear after drying. After some time, greasy stains, hair, and dirt are found in the place. The steam cleaner will easily return the cleanliness and former appearance of the sofa. It is necessary to properly clean, acting according to the instructions.

Which nozzle to choose

For high-quality processing of upholstered furniture, nozzles of different types may be required. Sofas are angular, straight and everywhere you need to remove dirt. For smooth surfaces, rounded, flat brushes are suitable. They have a large area of steam supply, help to clean faster.

Detergent selection

If there are visible dirt or greasy areas on upholstered home furniture, you can use specialized detergents. Select chemical products strictly according to the type of fabric.

A wide range of cleaning products are available for carpets, sofas. The powders are diluted to the state of a paste or foam, applied to the stained area, left for some time to act. Remove residues with clean water, then steam.

Cleaning process

Cleaning is carried out in sections, do not treat the entire perimeter of the sofa with a nozzle at once. All removable elements of furniture, pillows are removed, treated with steam on an individual basis.

Before starting work, it is recommended to clean the sofa with a steam cleaner on a small inconspicuous area from below. It is possible to start extensive cleaning only if the upholstery has not changed color and structure.

  1. First remove debris and specks from the furniture. A vacuum cleaner will help to cope with the task.
  2. Fill the special container with clean water. For steam generators, filtered water, purified from various impurities, is recommended.
  3. If the dirt is heavy, or if the instructions for the appliance require the use of a special detergent for cleaning, add it to the water tank.
  4. Switch on the steam generator.
  5. Gently drive the nozzle, immediately blot the treated area with microfiber cloths. If the stain does not go away, repeat the procedure several times. It is important to monitor the steam pressure so as not to cause excessive wetting of textiles.
  6. First, the main part of the sofa is cleaned, then difficult, narrow places. For this purpose, a cone-shaped small nozzle is used. It must be driven with a change in the angle of inclination, from top to bottom. For the best effect, the fabric on the furniture must be stretched.
  • the steam generator should be kept parallel to the surface to be treated during cleaning;
  • The pressure must be controlled using the steam regulation function. The more delicate, softer the upholstery on upholstered furniture, the weaker the flow;
  • For greasy, greasy stains, the following removal method is recommended: point the nozzle of the steam generator at the dirty area from the bottom up, blowing out the dirt particles;
  • after completion of work, the condition of the surface is checked. If there is too much moisture in it, it is necessary to get wet with paper towels or napkins.

Avoid getting your furniture wet with a steam cleaner with built-in vacuum cleaner. It works on the principle of a combination of dry / wet cleaning. It takes several minutes to dry the surface.

Upholstered furniture looks respectable, adds a touch of comfort and warmth to the interior of the living room. Leather, textile upholstery due to active use quickly becomes unusable, rubbed, dirty. Steam cleaning will help restore the lost appearance, eliminate unpleasant odors. Thanks to the steam generator, cleaning is effortless.

Cleaning the sofa and other upholstered furniture with a steam cleaner

Is it possible to clean furniture with a steam cleaner?

To be successful, you need to be aware of how a steam cleaner works.

Can the sofa be cleaned with a steam cleaner, is the steam safe for upholstered furniture?

Cleaning your sofa with a steam cleaner is the easiest, most effective and safest way to get it looking good and getting rid of dirt. The jet of steam can penetrate deep into fabric fibers where other cleaners cannot reach.

The benefits of steam cleaning

The steam cleaner works simply but effectively. Inside the device there is a steam boiler – a container in which water is heated, turning into steam. Under the action of high pressure, steam exits the pipe through one of the several nozzles included in the kit.

The most popular manufacturers of such devices:

  • Karcher,
  • Clatronic,
  • Aiete.

For cleaning sofas, armchairs and other types of upholstered furniture, a triangular nozzle is best suited (not only Karcher, but also most other brands have such). A wide floor nozzle, a narrow one for plumbing or a nozzle with a brush will not work.

What are the benefits of a steam cleaner?

  • Convenient and easy to use. It does not require a lot of physical strength. You can choose the most compact model for greater convenience.
  • No chemicals – just water vapor. This means safety. The less toxic substances, the better.
  • The combination of moisture and heat excels in dirt, often removing even a thick layer of grease.
  • Quick cleaning.
  • Cleaning takes place not only on the surface, but also in the fibers of the fabric. So you can get rid of deep-seated dirt, coffee stains, wine and sauce stains, and even dust mites.
  • The effect is not only cleansing, but also disinfectant. Allows you to get rid of harmful bacteria.
  • No stains or other marks associated with other upholstery cleaning methods.
  • The steam cleaner makes it easier to get to hard-to-reach places.
  • Disappears odor after treatment.

Most sofas are resistant to steam cleaners. The exception is those that are upholstered in silk or linen. But leather furniture is much better tolerated by hot steam.

How do I clean a sofa with a steam cleaner?

Here are the detailed cleaning instructions:

  1. Vacuum the sofa intensively.
  2. The most difficult stains can be pre-washed with detergent. If you fundamentally do not want to use chemistry, try natural folk remedies.
  3. After the upholstery is completely dry, prepare the steam cleaner. Pour water into a special container. For a better effect, you can add upholstery cleaner, shampoo or dishwashing detergent. It will be safer to use the chemicals specified in the manufacturer’s instructions. In addition, you need to dilute them in water, and not use a concentrate.
  4. Then you need to put on a suitable nozzle – triangular.
  5. You can now start the cleaning process. The nozzle must be kept at an angle. The device must be moved smoothly, the upholstery should be cleaned with long and soft movements, often wiping the remaining dirt with a cloth (but not from a rough material). The whole process should be gradual.
  6. Treat easily accessible areas first, then hard-to-reach areas.
  7. The same areas must be carefully treated several times.
  8. Ruffles must be cleaned carefully. After stretching the fabric, process it from top to bottom. It is important here not to leave a burn on your hands.
  9. Pillows and other removable parts are best treated after removing them from the sofa.

After cleaning is completed, the furniture must dry. This is not a fast process. But if a vacuum cleaner is built into the steam cleaner, then drying will take much less time – just a couple of minutes.

Helpful Hints

The following tips will help you clean furniture most effectively:

  • To check if the upholstery can withstand contact with steam, it is best to treat an inconspicuous area of the sofa first. Steam cleaning is the least damaging to thick, dark-colored upholstery.
  • The effectiveness and safety of cleaning depends on how good quality water is used. It shouldn’t be too hard. Water from the pipeline can be poured, but if it is not soft enough, a small amount of distilled water should be poured into it. It is better to use filtered water, so there is less chance that scale will form in the device.
  • When the steam cleaner runs out of water, you need to unplug the wire from the outlet, release the remaining steam to the surface, and only then refill the tank with water.
  • Lacquered elements must not be touched, otherwise they will bulge and spoil the appearance of the furniture.
  • Be careful also around metal parts. They shouldn’t get wet.
  • It is better to use the steam cleaner regularly. Then you definitely won’t need any strong chemicals.

To make cleaning quick, safe and hassle-free, you need to heed a couple of simple tips and keep in mind the instructions and recommendations of manufacturers. And then the furniture will be whole and spotlessly clean.

Steam cleaners can be safely attributed to universal household appliances. They are actively used during window cleaning, apartment cleaning, furniture cleaning. The presence of a large number of special nozzles allows you to quickly and efficiently clean the coating from any material.

This device is often used to clean the interior of a car. In addition, the steam cleaner is multifunctional, which means it has many advantages compared to other devices.

Advantages of steam cleaners

All motorists know that interior cleaning is a long and troublesome task. First you need to thoroughly vacuum the chairs, then rinse the rugs. The final step is to wet sponge the control panel. And a steam cleaner that is suitable for a car can significantly speed up this process, reducing the cost of human effort. This device allows you to replace several devices at once. In addition, the quality of surface treatment is more efficient compared to other methods.

The principle of operation is quite simple. Under high pressure, a steam jet emerges from the device’s pipe. It is able to penetrate into hard-to-reach places and thoroughly clean the surface. But special conical nozzles allow you to remove all dirt from cracks and corners.

A special advantage of the device is the ability to work with dry steam. This method of processing will not harm the skin, will not wet it. This means that you do not have to wait for the interior to dry completely. It is worth replacing that the hot jet of steam destroys all bacteria and dust mites. They can start up both in the filler and in the upholstery fabrics of the chairs. The destruction of these harmful insects is especially important for families with children.

The car steam cleaner can be operated in different modes. If the device is equipped with a vacuum cleaner function, the car interior can be easily cleaned of mechanical debris. At the same time, large, strong contaminants are removed very quickly. Stubborn stains on surfaces can then be removed. Salon can be treated with steam. In the same way, you can wash the rugs and panels. But the chairs can be carefully cleaned using the deep cleaning function.

  • quick cleaning;
  • easy to use;
  • requires minimal effort;
  • environmental friendliness, because no chemicals are used;
  • disinfection of all surfaces;
  • high efficiency;
  • can be used on a variety of surfaces that are resistant to high temperatures.

Design Features

The design of each steam cleaner should consist of 3 basic elements:

  • heating element;
  • water tank or steam boiler;
  • steam hose or special nozzle.

These basic elements carry out the main work of the device: water is heated, turns into steam and is discharged outside.

The liquid can be heated in 2 ways:

  1. From the tank, the liquid enters the heating element and turns into steam, which is then directed to the outlet nozzle.
  2. Directly in the boiler, the liquid passes into a gaseous state, and pressure accumulates here. In this case, steam is supplied under high pressure and is characterized by high temperature.

All steam cleaners can be divided into floor and manual.

Handheld steam cleaners

This device is characterized by a small size, which also affects the capacity of the tank.

Advantages:

  • compact size;
  • fast heating;
  • ideal for use in confined spaces;
  • favorable price.

Disadvantages include:

  • short operating time – up to 30 minutes;
  • models with tanks over 1 liter are difficult to handle.

The Handheld Steam Cleaner is a cleaning assistant that helps you tackle tough stains.

Floor Steam Cleaner

At first glance, these steam cleaners look like small vacuum cleaners. They have the same body shape on wheels and a hose with a nozzle through which steam is supplied. The water tank is located in the floor compartment, which means that it greatly facilitates the work with the device.

The advantages of this model include:

  • multifunctionality;
  • good steam output;
  • continuous operation for 1.5-2 hours;
  • requires a minimum of effort.

The disadvantages include:

  • high cost;
  • you need to allocate some storage space.

Features of choice

Today, manufacturers offer a wide range of products that differ from each other in design, technical and functional characteristics. To choose a quality device for cleaning the car interior, you need to consider the following features:

  • device size and weight;
  • the presence of a set of additional nozzles;
  • steam pressure and power;
  • steam tank volume.

Most domestic car enthusiasts know that interior cleaning requires attention, effort and patience. After all, there is limited space inside the cabin. Therefore, the device must be light and compact.

When choosing a device, it is necessary to pay attention to the technical parameters, especially the steam pressure indicator, and hence the power. The quality of cleaning of different surfaces depends on this. Experts recommend choosing a 1600 W device for cleaning the interior. In this case, the pressure must be within 4 bar.

Choose a device with adjustable steam. By controlling the steam jet, the car owner can determine the necessary method of exposure to various surfaces. This function is necessary, because there are various coatings in the cabin, each of which has its own processing characteristics.

The volume of the tank is very important. After all, the operating time of the device depends on it. In a small container, you will have to add water several times to clean the interior well. Please note that 1 liter of water is enough for approximately 30 minutes of continuous operation of the steam cleaner.

It is desirable that nozzles of various shapes and configurations come with the device. They allow you to quickly and effectively clean different surfaces. Remember, to clean hard-to-reach places, it is recommended to use a conical nozzle.

tips, warnings, instructions for owners of Karcher and other

appliances

Cleaning a sofa with a steam cleaner is the easiest, most effective and safest way to restore its pleasant appearance and get rid of dirt.

  • Karcher,
  • Clatronic,
  • Aiete.

For cleaning sofas, armchairs and other types of upholstered furniture, a triangular nozzle is best suited (not only Karcher, but most other brands have such).

How to clean a sofa with a steam cleaner?

Here is a detailed cleaning instruction:

The following rules will help you clean your furniture most effectively:
