Small deck garden ideas: 15 Deck Vegetable Garden Ideas To Grow More In Less Space

Deck Gardening & Creative Ways to Grow Herbs & Vegetables – Bonnie Plants

Discover the many ways you can grow food on your deck in containers, including window boxes, hanging baskets, vertical growing, upcycled containers, and more.

You might think raising vegetables without a large backyard would be a challenge, but growing food on a sunny deck or patio (or even a balcony) can be as productive as planting an in-ground garden—and in some ways, it’s easier! Having fresh produce in a container garden right outside your door just ready for the picking makes ingredient gathering a breeze, you don’t have a drag a hose across the yard when it’s time to water, and dirt-dwelling plant enemies like voles, snails, and slugs are less likely to be an issue. Plus, a deck filled with beautiful edibles makes the perfect place to relax and admire your success.

When planning your deck container garden, take a good look at the existing structure to see what elements you can incorporate into your garden. Does the deck have railings to support window boxes? Is there an overhang appropriate for hanging baskets? Are the stairs wide enough for pots? What material is your deck—will it need protection from water draining from the pots?

Also think about what you want to grow. While you can grow just about anything in a container (as long as it’s large enough), there are many Bonnie Plants® varieties are ideal for smaller container gardens, like Red Robin cherry tomatoes and Burpless Bush cucumbers. If you’re looking for instant success, try our Patio Ready plants. These come with everything you need to create a lush garden in a small space—just pop them in a sunny spot and you’re good to grow! Why Bonnie? We have over a century’s worth of experience growing strong, vigorous young plants for home gardeners, plus with our over 70 growing stations spread out across the country, your plants never have to travel far to get to you.

How to Grow Food on a Deck: Types of Containers

Once you’ve analyzed your deck structure and space, it’s time to get creative. Think about your personal design preferences. Do you prefer colorful, eclectic elements or subtle containers where the plants are the focal point? Are you an environmentally-conscious sort who wants to upcycle old containers to grow your food? Consider, too, your budget. Sure, a half-dozen matching ceramic pots look great, but so does a variety of way-cheaper thrift-store containers in the same color family. As long as you select containers that are safe for food growing and make sure to add drainage holes, you can be as creative as you’d like! Start with simple window boxes on your deck or balcony railings. Window boxes provide the perfect home for many vegetables, as well as lettuce, spinach, arugula, and any crops with shallow roots. Add some edible flowers, like pansies or trailing nasturtiums, and you’ve created both a lovely addition to your deck and a perfect start to your food-growing journey.

If your neighbors like to peek at your deck and you’d prefer privacy, create a living screen with vertical vegetables. Place a large, rectangular container filled with Miracle-Gro® Potting Mix (it provides just the right soil environment for strong root growth) in the area where you want to create the screen. Add a tall trellis to the container. Plant vining cucumbers, peas, or pole beans along the base of the trellis. As the vines grow, help the plant weave itself into the openings in the trellis. Not only will your living wall create a beautiful privacy screen, but it will provide delicious dinner ingredients, too. You can also create fun vertical structures by stacking rectangular containers on a ladder or hanging an existing fence with fabric wall pockets filled with herbs like parsley, chives, and thyme

Overhangs also offer a great opportunity to grow food in hanging baskets. Lettuce or strawberries, both beloved by slugs and snails, grow beautifully when out of crawling pests’ reach. Cascading cherry tomatoes, such as Tumbling Tom, grow well in hanging baskets too. Of course, a lovely grouping of plant containers always adds aesthetic impact on decks and the steps leading up to them. You’ll find loads of options: ceramic, terracotta, plastic, wood, self-watering, fiberglass—the list goes on. Know, though, that some materials (like terracotta and ceramic) may crack if exposed to freezing temperatures, so if you plan to grow food year-round, select containers that can withstand the cold. You don’t need to spend a fortune to grow food on your deck or balcony, either. Look around to find materials for upcycled containers. Turn an old wooden CD storage unit or bookshelf into a raised bed by laying it flat and adding potting mix. Drill holes in the bottom of a galvanized trough, fill it with soil, and you have a perfect large container for tomatoes or a mix of smaller plants. Make a privacy screen with stacked, staggered wooden wine crates and fill with soil and edibles. Move a bookshelf against an outside wall and add containers of herbs. Drill holes in the bottoms of old coffee cans, add a hole on the top edge of each can, attach the cans with zip ties to the deck railing—and you have a kitschy upcycled food growing station. Have an old burlap feed sack? Line it with a heavy-duty trash bag with holes poked in the bottom, fill it with potting mix, and plant away.

With containers, size matters. In general, the larger the container, the less work it’ll require. Small containers dry out quickly and need frequent watering—sometimes twice a day in high heat. Larger containers still need water, but they contain more soil to retain moisture, so you won’t have to do it as much. Also, if the plants you’re growing require support (like stakes or a tomato cage) you’ll need a large container to anchor them. Of course, you can also take advantage of existing structures on your deck, like slats in the railing, to use for plant support. Simply use garden twine to tie the plant to the structure.

If you have space, you’ll also find many options for small raised beds or elevated gardens, available commercially, that fit well on a deck or patio.

And don’t forget to feed your plants. Because containers need frequent watering (even daily when it’s hot outside), they tend to lose nutrients quickly. Use Miracle-Gro® Water Soluble Plant Food Vegetables and Herbs to keep your crops well-fed and productive. You can feed at the same time you water—no extra time required.

Save Time with Patio Ready Plants

The absolute easiest way to grow food on your deck or balcony is to start with one of Bonnie Plants’ Patio Ready options, which provide everything you need to start your own food garden—already planted up and ready to go. Just select your favorite caged plants, combo containers (think BBQ Herbs or Salad Greens), or hanging baskets, place them on your deck or patio, and you’re good to grow. True, you’ll still need to water, feed your plants, and harvest the crops, but we show you how to do all that on the plant tag. No matter what kind of container you’re growing in, we’ll be like a garden expert in your pocket, helping you care for your container garden so it produces the best possible harvest. So make your plans, check out your deck space, and let your imagination run wild. Soon you’ll be eating delicious, deck-grown food. Enjoy!

Small deck ideas come in handy when you’re trying to make the most of a tiny or unused outdoor space.

The usual options would be to transform this awkward little area into a patio or a courtyard, but deck ideas can be used successfully to enhance teeny yards too. You just need a bit of know-how and ingenuity to make the materials work and the space sing.

Discover the tricks and tips for choosing the best decking material, color, furniture, and layout to make your space feel bigger, better, and brighter. With these small deck ideas on a budget, we promise you won’t go overboard online, or at your local home improvement store.

Small deck ideas on a budget

1. Build a pretty playhouse

Move over summerhouses and expensive children’s playhouses – because it’s all about this pink project. Built like a real-life dollhouse, this dreamy DIY is THE place to be for play dates and socializing outside. Complete with a ladder and slide, it’s the perfect miniature playground to supervise the kids while you slurp on a cool drink outside.

If you don’t have time or patience to build your own, look at upcycling your garden shed by removing your garbage, evicting the spiders, and getting inspo from our shed paint ideas.

2. Add lattice woodwork for a romantic scheme

Hanging out on your small deck is all good until you have a peeping tom spying on your whereabouts. If you want to isolate yourself from your next-door neighbor, but don’t want (or can’t have) a fence to use as a partition, check out this cute garden screening idea that screams less: ‘stop looking at me!’ and is much more regencycore.

‘Give your small deck a sense of privacy to foster a cozy, intimate feeling.’ says Jonathan Shapiro , a realtor at Keller Williams, SouthPark .

‘Lattice panels create boundaries around your outdoor space and block neighboring views.’

Try Home Depot for decorative trellis hardware.

3. Throw some shade with an outdoor umbrella

Sun worshipper or UV-wary – which one are you? No matter which camp you fall in, respecting your skin is a non-negotiable when it comes to responsible tanning. So, avoid getting your back burnt by investing in the best garden parasol your budget can stretch to.

Just because it’s a practical deck shade idea, doesn’t mean that you can’t make it stylish. Pick a sunshade that fits in with the rest of your external scheme. For example, classic stripes are good for traditional types, while pineapple or flamingo motifs give off that contemporary Cali vibe.

Using this over your patio table will take your alfresco eating from drab to fab, just like that.

Alternatively, if you want a more permanent fixture, consider propping a pop-up garden gazebo on your small deck, or building a pergola yourself.

4. Go wild with a kids’ activity corner

Get the kids off their consoles and out into the backyard with this enticing area with lots of space for activities. If space permits, add a chalkboard or if there’s nowhere to install one, use Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint to create a surface they can write on.

Bunting always makes everything better and brings a real celebratory feel to the outdoor space. It’s super cheap to buy from Amazon or let kids have fun DIYing their own with jute twine and scrap bits of fabric from your haberdashery hoard. Hobbycraft have a tutorial on how to make bunting if you want to give it a go.

And, while we’re being big kids ourselves, unleash your competitive side with indoor classics brought to life outside. Four in a row (aka Connect Four) and giant Jenga are must-haves when it comes to grabbing the best garden games.

5. Pop your DIY pallet projects on your deck

Be smug and show off your pallet table coffee table idea at your next backyard party. After all, knowing how to make pallet furniture takes patience, persistence, and some skill so you’re well within your right to be proud of your DIY project.

Make sure it takes pride of place by placing it smack bang in the middle of your small deck. Because nobody puts Baby in the corner.

6. Create a nostalgic scene with a garden swing

How cute is this boho-inspired Trym Swing Chair from Wayfair ? Ideal for all ages, rock back and forth with the best seat in the house (OK, technically in the backyard but whatevs).

If you’ve got a small tree adjacent to your deck, it’s the perfect place to install your garden swing. Max out on whimsical ambiance and get to decorating your deck with wooden accessories, distinct, vibrant colors, and heaps of potted plants for extra texture. And don’t forget those outdoor cushions to make the seat super comfy.

7. Use a area rug to add interest (or fake with paint)

‘Anchor your small deck with a high-style outdoor rug,’ says Shapiro.

‘If you want something more permanent, a painted design on the deck can take the place of an area rug.’

If you’re stuck between the two ideas, why not learn how to paint an outdoor rug so you can play with paint and texture.

8. Cool the kids down with a kiddie pool

If you take pride in having the greenest turf in your neighborhood, you’ll know that you should never leave an inflatable pool on grass. According to gardening pros, the ideal place to put your best paddling pool, is on your deck.

Alfresco dining is a hella lot more relaxed than a sit-down meal inside. And nine times out of ten, all rules for interior dining schemes are thrown out of the window.

Where mismatched furniture feels a bit thrown together and ill-prepared inside, mixing up your outdoor dining sets is a welcome way to add interest and versatility.

‘Dedicate your small deck to entertaining friends and family by arranging small deck furniture in casual grouping with a petite coffee table in the middle,’ says Shapiro.

‘Maximize on space by incorporating seating around the perimeter. This helps free up floor space at the center and creates more standing room.’

10. Create a cozy corner made for movie night

If you want to create an outdoor drive-in cinema space without a car, this small deck idea is perfect for movie buffs and cinephiles. If your budget doesn’t quite stretch to an all-out outdoor living room space, you can pick up an outdoor projector for pretty cheap. In fact, the AuKing mini project on Amazon comes in under $100, with change for popcorn and other snacks.

‘I thought we could have a little date night/movie night in the garden, so went to town and brought out extra lighting, blankets, and cushions. We don’t have any fancy outdoor screens or the likes, so we just take the laptop out,’ explains Carol Maxwell, (aka @maxmademedoit ).

‘The corner dining set is from made.com . I genuinely don’t know what we would have done without this during the lockdown as it made our outdoor haven so comfy. The standard light next to the vintage egg chair is by West Elm .’

11. Combine decking with a mini patio area

To add design interest and visually enhance your small garden design ideas, combining decking with a paved area. This will create an illusion of a larger, zoned space. This decked area created by Anna-Carin McNamara benefits from a neutral patio area and a huge mirror, which makes the garden look twice the size.

12. Try small deck ideas that use vertical space

Just because your deck is small, that doesn’t mean you can’t make the most of floral displays on it.

The trick is to use the walls as vertical garden storage ideas. This small decking idea by @j_habite , uses decking up the wall to provide hanging space for containers. The wrap-around approach makes for visual continuity, which makes the area feel bigger and more cohesive too. Clever – and a great option if you’re wondering how to make a small garden look bigger.

13. Work built-in seating into small garden decking

Small outdoor spaces call for clever garden seating ideas, so take note of any area that could be used for custom-built spots to park yourself.

We like the way that the decking material is used to create a streamlined, wrap-around seating area in this decked garden by Norsu Home as it helps draw the eye around, enhancing the space, though there are loads of other places to scout for good garden furniture. You might be surprised to know that Amazon garden furniture is actually of good quality.

14. Stain a small deck in a light color for simplicity

We all know that light colors indoors make a room feel larger, and the same works outdoors with a deck, so choosing a light-colored decking paint or decking stain makes good sense.

In this small decked area, the light wood of the deck stands out against the dark facade; the monochrome design scheme is completed with the Square Table And Chair Garden Set in Clay from Lime Lace.

Talking of space and garden dining… just because your deck is small, that doesn’t mean you can’t incorporate an outdoor kitchen in yours, just like you’d squeeze in a perfectly functional kitchen indoors.

We love a DIY look which is ideal to customize to whatever size your area allows for, plus, it’s one of the most budget-friendly small decking ideas going.

16. Create wall-to-wall decking to exaggerate a small garden’s width

(Image credit: Honor Holmes Garden Design)

When considering small garden ideas, you have to use all the design tricks up your sleeve. One is to exaggerate the garden’s width with decking. You can do this by laying the boards width-ways – their lines will draw the eye across the deck’s width, making it seem wider – and by laying them right up to the boundary on both sides. You can soften the finished look by creating a green vista in the near distance – this will prevent your small garden from looking boxed in.

This enclosed garden in London has been designed by Honor Holmes Garden Design and benefits from a green space at the bottom of the garden that contrasts with the decking.

17. Save space with compact, multi-tasking garden furniture

If you do want some of the best garden furniture out on your small garden deck, pick a patio dining set that has a small footprint. Dual-purpose pieces or built-in storage is a bonus, too. The St Mawes Drinks/Planter Bar Table from Garden Trading has a steel trough in the middle – perfect for cooling drinks, or creating a green display.

If cash is tight, consider looking at how to revive an old patio furniture set with spray paint.

18. Combine small garden decking ideas with built-in planters

Small garden decking ideas and container gardening were made for each other, and you can fit in a plant or two in even the tiniest of decked gardens, balconies, or terraces as this lovely decked area shows.

Building a raised bed like this is a great idea for small decked areas – the streamlined nature of the container will make the area feel larger and can be made to raise the height of the plants significantly, upping their impact.

Feeling strapped for cash? Instead of buying decorative pots from garden centers and nurseries, consider making your own DIY plant stands to house your plant babies.

19. Include a change in decking levels for compact gardens

If you are looking small sloping garden ideas, you’ve actually been handed a golden opportunity. Rather than working out how to level a yard or dividing your lawn into lots of different zones, creating decking on different levels will make it more usable and enhance the feeling of space.

20. Turn your small deck into an outdoor room

A tiny deck is usually the perfect size for creating an Insta-worthy indoor-outdoor living space, with all the frills. It can be covered, or not – with outdoor rocking chairs – or not.

As mentioned, we like all the frills so we wholeheartedly recommend going to town with seating, soft furnishings, and outdoor decor to help enhance your small deck further.

21. Use contrasting colors to enhance a small deck

Small deck ideas needn’t just be about structure. You can make a big difference cheaply using paint. Deploying contrasting decking paint colors is a clever, distracting move in a small outdoor space; think contrasting the wall and deck colors, or even experiment by ‘zoning’ the deck itself, painting one half a lighter color than the other.

This small all-over decked area has been enhanced by color contrasts created with Cuprinol Garden Shades decking paint.

Use decking to zone different areas in a small space

It may feel counterintuitive to use multiple materials in a small space, but using garden decking to delineate different zones in a small garden will actually make it look bigger. The trick is to use different materials in a similar shade.

This small deck idea for a rooftop garden has had a makeover with a separate decking area for sun loungers that wraps around the patio, which is used for dining and outdoor cooking. The design is by My Landscapes .

23. Transform a small deck into an outdoor spa

Decking is often used in areas that get wet a lot, especially around swimming pools and plunge pools, but if your garden is very small, you can still use it this way.

Depending on what’s most feasible for your specific outdoor area, it could be a small plunge pool, or an integrated hot tub. You’ll need to speak to a garden designer and/or architect first.

Once all the formalities are out of the way, dive into the best hot tub deals for your hard-earned dollars.

24. Small garden decking needs vertical planting

Wapping roof terrace by My Landscapes

If you do opt for an all-decked garden in a small outdoor area, add interest with vertical planting and integrated lighting to create more contrast and texture.

This small rooftop garden has a relaxed and glowing look thanks to the clever use of plants and lights. Why not find out how to create a living wall with our green-fingered guide?

25. Surround small garden decking with a painted fence

It makes sense to keep your decking natural – it’s much easier to maintain if it’s not painted, but oiled or stained instead. However, your garden still needs color – and you can add that by painting your fence to create a garden color scheme. Then just accessorize.

Want a small decking idea that won’t cost much, but will have plenty of instant impact? Colorful cushions can go a surprisingly long way to making your small deck more inviting. Mix and match bold colors with graphic patterns for maximum effect –small decks really can take a lot of color.

26. Use stencils for a uplifting feature fence

‘A feature fence is a fun and innovative way to add originality to your outdoor space,’ says Tristan Sissons, garden buying manager, Homebase .

‘And with there being a whole variety of fence paint colors to choose from, there’s something to suit everyone. If you’re in need of some feature fence ideas, remember, bright pops of color are a great way to make smaller gardens feel bigger, whereas trendy darker tones do an excellent job at making vegetation and plant arrangements stand out.’

Of course, you don’t have to stick to a palm motif, there are plenty of stencils to choose from on Amazon , as well as exterior paint combos to play with. Frenchic’s alfresco paint has a good range of pastel hues as well as more traditional shades.

27. Layer the greenery

Decorating an elevated small deck idea with greenery all around makes for a truly inviting set up. Complement any surrounding grass or trees with more plants on a table and keep cool containers close by for a loosely crowded plant party.

28. And, work in a totally tropical corner

If you’ve only got room for one sun lounger, you may as well make it feel like you’re actually sat in the jungle. How? Plant all the greenery around this mini decked area and keep your sun lounger loaded with plush extras too. Lush? Check. Dappled sun? Check. Piña Colada? Coming!

But, you don’t want to be batting leaves out of your mouth while sipping on your cocktails, so take a look at the best small garden trees that aren’t too intrusive.

29. Make lighting the biggest feature

Garden lighting ideas are so important in your outdoor space, especially when it’s a small one, and it’s amazing what you can do by layering different forms and having them displayed in a variety of ways.

Try lanterns teamed with candles for heaps of ambiance by day, and by night, to make your small deck ideas shine in all seasons.

30. Add a dramatic living wall

Small decking ideas needn’t lack drama – unless of course, you’re going for that vibe. DIY your own living wall ideas and make it a big one even for your small space.

31. Make it convivial with an outdoor fireplace

Logs burning on a cool night will make even the smallest of small deck ideas super cozy. Warm it up with one of the more classic outdoor fireplace ideas for big appeal or scale things down a notch with the best fire pit instead.

What safety considerations do I need to factor in for composite decking?

Whether you’re working with a big or small decking idea, there are some safety and practical considerations you need to make. Here Chris Moorhouse, category director – timber, building, decor, garden, at Wickes shares his top tips:

  • If you are building a timber base frame, make sure that your timber is structurally treated.
  • Ensure you leave a 40mm gap beneath fascia boards to allow for proper ventilation.
  • Treat all cut ends of timber and drill holes with two coats of preservative.
  • When drilling, it’s best to mark out pilot holes as this will help to make your fixings as accurate as possible. Ensure that you use screws specifically designed for the job and that all screws are secure but not over tightened.
  • Whilst it is possible to build a composite deck on your own, it’s much easier with a spare pair of hands, so ask a friend if they can help out.
  • If you need to cut a deck board to accommodate an obstacle, or you need to trim any overhanging deck boards in order to make a straight edge, mark a chalk guideline and then carefully cut along the line with a jigsaw.

How can I decorate a small porch?

‘We love things that are pretty within their design, yet super practical too!’ says Lucy Kirk, creative and photography manager, Lights4Fun .

‘Solar lights are a great example of design meets function, with the added benefit of being energy efficient and green to run. Powered entirely by the sun, they involve absolutely no running costs and minimal upkeep to ensure they glow come dusk.’

‘When it comes to dressing your deck, illuminate from the bottom up by displaying solar pebble lights around the edge of your deck. Creating not only an illumination to the edge, but a colorful walkway with settings to suit all times of the year.’

‘Their super handy solar powered functionality allows them to become portable, giving you the option to move around where you see fit. Complete the look by opting for solar powered festoon lights draped from tree to tree to create a ceiling high glow to your space.’

Feeling left behind by the grow-your-own-food revolution because you live in an apartment without any outdoor space or own a home with a small backyard? Take heart: Anyone with a sunny windowsill, patio, or balcony can grow just about anything they want. In fact, choosing plants that are nourishing, delicious, and beautiful is the ultimate way to maximize limited space, and that’s true whether you’re working with one little window box or several large containers on your patio.

Even if you only have access to a window, the small-scale garden ideas we’re sharing will work just about anywhere. That means that anyone who wants try their hand at tending their own patch—whatever size that patch may be—certainly can. When space is limited but enthusiasm isn’t, go for containers. The window boxes pictured here, just two feet long each, are big enough to grow all sorts of herbs, including oregano, basil, chives, and rosemary. But if you had your heart set on terra-cotta planters, we’re showing you how to make your own herb tower that not only adds to your garden’s charm, but also serves as the type of container garden you can enjoy in any size space. With so much extra room for herb varieties, it’s the ideal choice for anyone working with limited outdoor square footage.

Contrary to what you might think, there are so many plants—from your favorite roses to delicious produce—that you can grow in a small garden. “Plant breeders have been focused on developing new varieties for small spaces in recent years, so even some of your classic favorites like hydrangeas, crapemyrtle, and sweetspire [are available],” says Ryan McEnany, public relations and communications specialist for Bailey Nurseries. “Plants that remain genetically compact will not take over your space as time goes on, but the root system will generally stay smaller as well, which will keep the plant—and those surrounding—healthy for the long haul,” he says. Ahead, explore some of our favorite small garden ideas to make the most of your area.

Think of Bright Light

mld106425_0311_containrs033.jpg

Just as in conventional vegetable gardens, sunshine is vital for patio garden success. Six to eight hours of bright light daily is best. Food crops also need consistent and frequent watering, so be sure to think about the location of your hose or faucet when planning where to plant—the closer your plants can be to water, the easier it will be to keep up with your plants’ optimal hydration schedule.

Optimize Space for Vegetables

mld106425_0311_containrs007. jpg

Devote the most planting space to the vegetables your family loves best. Keep in mind that large plants such as beans, cucumbers, and tomatoes require large pots (two feet in diameter or more). Smaller pots are perfect for peppers, greens, kale, and herbs, and they look great tucked between larger containers on your patio garden. For season-long interest, combine plants with varied flowering times so that some things will be ripening while others will be ready to harvest. In hot weather, water evaporates quickly from the elevated soil in a container. You may need to irrigate your pots every day if temperatures go above 90 degrees.

Think Storage

mld106425_0311_containrs034.jpg

Minimal growing space often corresponds to a dearth of off-season storage. Sturdy containers that can be left out on your patio year-round, above, are a good solution. These three sizes of these stackable planters in a lightweight, all-weather resin accommodate all kinds of vegetables. Large plants such as tomatoes will need staking: Bamboo is an attractive, inexpensive option; sturdy metal tomato cages work well, too. By keeping the plants upright and well aerated, you help minimize the possibility of disease while maximizing yield. You also increase available space, allowing an under planting of small plants such as carrots, radishes, or herbs.

Choose Superproductive Plants

mld106425_0311_containrs013.jpg

Don’t wait all season for a few huge slicing tomatoes. Instead, opt for prolific, early-bearing, and delicious cherry tomatoes, such as ‘Sun Gold.’

Combine Similar Species

Look for Dwarf Varieties

Plant breeders are constantly introducing vegetables that take up less space, such as this tiny but tasty dark-green ‘Diamant’ cucumber.

Use a Window Box

various plant types in black iron window boxes

A two-foot-wide box will easily host four to six large herb plants or a small crop of salad greens. Try to choose plants with a variety of shapes and colors, such as purple basil, tall lemon verbena, and chives, to make the display attractive. Herbs are particularly good choices for urban window boxes, since they can be maintained with just a watering can and a pair of shears. Most herbs require minimal fertilizing. In fact, overfed herbs lose essential oils in their leaves, making them less flavorful.

Plan Accordingly

“When choosing plants for small spaces, be sure to check the plant tag or brand’s website to make sure the mature size stays compact,” advises McEnany.

Utilize Plants That Pull Double Duty

Variegated herbs, such as this two-tone mint, make a strong visual impression (without sacrificing flavor or productivity) when mixed with solid-color plants. Sowing a few extra seeds of easy-to-grow nasturtium and borage into any herb or vegetable planting adds a welcome touch of color to pots and to salads.

21 Balcony Garden Ideas for Beginners in Small Apartments

Learn the basics of planning and designing a small-scale balcony or rooftop garden, plus get tips for selecting the best plants and containers.
    By Anne Balogh

Growing plants in a limited space like a balcony or terrace can be a challenge even for an experienced gardener, but it’s also a great opportunity to be creative and have fun.

From deciding what to grow (an urban vegetable garden? a tropical paradise?) to choosing imaginative containers (such as an old watering can or wood crate), the entire process can be an adventure. Yes, you still must adhere to the strict confines of your space, but there are many tricks for making every square inch count. Here are some tips to help you get started:

On this page: Maximize Your Space | Know Your Restrictions | How to Water | What to Grow | Choose Your Containers | Balcony Garden Ideas

    On this page:

    • MAXIMIZE YOUR SPACE
    • KNOW YOUR RESTRICTIONS

    • WHAT TO GROW
    • CONTAINERS
    • BALCONY GARDEN IDEAS

    MAXIMIZE YOUR SPACE

How much space do you need for a balcony garden? Surprisingly, not much at all if you take advantage of walls, railings, and overhead structures.

Turn your balcony into a vertical garden. Attach pots, shelves, or trellises to the walls; and if your balcony has a ceiling, add a few hooks for hanging plants. Cover the railings of your balcony with chicken wire to support climbing plants, or purchase plant hangers that can be attached to the top of a railing. (See more vertical gardening ideas.)

Think of your balcony garden as an extension of your indoor living space. If you choose plant colors and textures that echo the interior design, even the smallest balcony will look more expansive and welcoming.

    KNOW YOUR RESTRICTIONS

In addition to the square footage of your balcony, there may be other restrictions that will limit what you can plant and where. If you live in an apartment building or condo, be sure to check what’s permissible by the building owner before you begin.

Weight. There may be weight restrictions and rules regarding what you can hang from balcony railings and walls. If the balcony is attached to your home, know how much weight it can safely support. The weight from large ceramic containers and wet soil can add up quickly.

Microclimate. The amount of sunlight the space receives is the most critical factor to consider, but wind exposure and temperature are important too.

    • Wind: Strong winds, which are common on balcony and rooftop gardens high above the ground, can quickly dry out the soil, rip the petals off flowers, and knock over tall potted plants.
    • Heat: Sun reflecting from windows can intensify the heat of a balcony garden and burn delicate foliage. Even the basic construction of your balcony (such as concrete vs. wood) will affect how much heat it retains.
    • Shade: Many urban balconies receive quite a bit of shade if surrounded by tall buildings or covered by an overhang. Often you can work around this problem by putting sun-loving plants near the perimeter of the balcony, where the sun is more prevalent.

Tip: If wind is a problem on your balcony, consider using balcony privacy screens as windbreaks to protect more fragile plants. You can also put plants that don’t like the wind in low pots near a wall to give them more protection.

HOW DO YOU WATER A BALCONY GARDEN?

Few balcony or rooftop gardens have access to an outside water source, which means you’ll have to rely on water from a sink or bathtub to keep your plants well-hydrated. To minimize your trips back and forth lugging heavy jugs of water, try some of these strategies for watering your plants:

    • If you have lots of plants to water, consider investing in a large, lightweight watering can that you can fill in the bathtub. Collapsible watering cans are great space savers for balcony gardens because they flatten when not in use.
    • Put saucers or trays under your plants to collect any water overflow so you don’t waste a drop. Self-watering pots, such as AquaPots®, can also help conserve water and significantly decrease watering frequency.
    • Eliminate watering cans altogether by purchasing a lightweight, expandable garden hose that you can attach to a kitchen sink using an adapter. They come in lengths as long as 100 feet and retract when not in use for easy storage.

Keep in mind that the hotter and windier the conditions on your balcony, the more frequently you’ll need to water — sometimes as often as twice a day. If a convenient water source is far from reach, make life easier by growing plants with low water requirements, such as cacti and succulents.

WHAT CAN YOU GROW IN A BALCONY GARDEN?

Photo by: Ania K / Shutterstock

Just about any plant you can grow in a container is fair game for a balcony garden, as long as you have the space for it and can give it the appropriate amount of sun or shade. If you live in a climate with cold winters, consider growing some plants that are hardy enough to leave outdoors year-round or that can be overwintered indoors so you don’t have to start from scratch again each spring.

    • Herbs
    • Vegetables
    • Small trees, such as dwarf citrus trees or olive trees
    • Small shrubs
    • Container-friendly annuals and perennials for shade or sun
    • Succulents
    • Tropical houseplants, such as philodendron or spider plant.
    • Flowering vines and other climbing plants, if you have a trellis or other vertical support.

WHAT CONTAINERS ARE BEST FOR A BALCONY GARDEN?

Anything that can hold soil and has good drainage has potential for a balcony container garden. The style can range from fancy to frivolous, depending on your tastes, but the container should be practical and suit the purpose. Some factors to consider include container weight, durability, weather resistance, ease of watering, and cost.

    • Plastic and fiberglass plant containers are ideal for balcony gardens because they’re lighter in weight than terracotta or ceramic pots and come in a vast array of styles and sizes. However, on windy balconies, they can be blown over easily unless they’re secured in place.
    • Fabric grow bags are another lightweight container option, with the added advantage of being easy to store after the growing season is over. They also have handles for more convenient portability.
    • Hanging baskets and outdoor railing baskets are real space savers and can be used to grow everything from herbs to houseplants to trailing vegetables.
    • Tiered planters are another space-saving solution that allow you to use vertical space for your garden rather than taking up precious space on your balcony floor.

50 Best Balcony Garden Ideas and Designs for 2022

Perhaps one of the most recent ideas in gardening is the idea of balcony gardening. This idea has helped many people who were previously unable to garden because of their lack of yard space. Many live in a condo or apartment, yet even single family homes can sometimes lack the yard space required for a garden. People across the world are now transforming their balconies into gardens. This relevant concept gives new hope to aspiring gardeners and master gardeners alike!

50 Gardens You Haven’t Thought of this Year

Creating a balcony garden can be fun and fulfilling. However, sometimes the hardest part is getting started. Below are some amazing balcony garden designs. As you look through them, pay close attention to the designs you are drawn to. It may be helpful to have an idea of how you want to use your balcony space. Do you want a flower garden, vegetable garden, outdoor living space, or all of the above?

Some balconies are created to compliment the existing home design and decor. One factor to consider is your available budget. With many balcony garden ideas, you can create a fabulous space without spending much money! Another thing to think about is how much sunlight your balcony receives. This can help determine the plants you choose. Finally, what time of the day will you use your new space? For a balcony used mainly in the evenings, you may want lighting on your balcony. With adequate planning, you can create a beautiful balcony garden designed to serve your gardening needs.

    1. Sunny Side

    Source: hometweaks.com

This balcony garden is sunny and bright! Citrus trees love the sun, making a sunny balcony the ideal location for growing your own fruit. This creative balcony garden proves you do not need matching pots to be a stunning area. The plants are offered protection from the sun by the white umbrella secured to the balcony railing. From the collection of play toys to the red and white striped fabric shade, this is also a space to share with a child. The addition of the hanging light over the café table allows this balcony to be used even at night!

    2.

    Scrap Wood

    Source: lascosasdebeg.blogspot.hu

Simplistic and rustic describe this balcony garden. Using the vertical space, this garden combines rustic wood elements with light creating a cozy space. This design can be replicated with two wood pallets or even scrap wood from previous projects. Simply repurpose the wood for flower boxes! Since this design uses only the wall, it allows the balcony floor to stay clean and saves valuable floor space. The tea light candles invite warmth and romance into an otherwise boring space. Depending on your skill level and home decor, this balcony garden may be the perfect design for your home’s balcony garden.

    3. Micro-Park

    Source: fennelandfern.co.uk

Is a tiny yard and garden on your balcony possible? When creating a balcony garden design you can have both! Using AstroTurf on your balcony floor, you are able to create a yard in the city or on your apartment balcony. Colorful, yet edible kale is showcased in wooden crates. Hanging garden boxes provide additional growing space on the balcony railing in this design. With the predominantly green landscape, the pop of fuchsia color from the flower is a nice addition. Even the tiny herbs have a home in the small terra cotta pots lining the side of this balcony!

    4. Vertical Terra Cotta

    Source: thehorticult.com

Never underestimate the power of hooks when balcony gardening. They are great for hanging baskets or hanging terra cotta pots. This design uses simple eye hole hooks and connects the pots using metal rods, washers, and bolts. The beauty of this design is found in staggering the pots to add visual interest. The metal rods create a sort of rain chain between the pots allowing the water to flow from the top down. Therefore, by watering the top, you can save water from draining out onto the ground. This design would work equally well for flowers or herbs.

    5. Modern Comfort

    Source: crnobelo.com

Modern meets comfort in this beautiful balcony garden decor. Elements of home design have been carried through to this balcony. When combining home design with the outdoors, it’s important to bring home décor to the space. With the pillow, blanket, and serving tray this balcony garden has done just that! Aside from the wicker chair, this space doesn’t feature typical outdoor furniture. A stool is used as a plant display and a rope covered ottoman keeps the home décor feel alive. Keeping with the theme, the rug breaks up the modern gray on this balcony adding yet another visual element of comfort.

    6. Culinary Creations

    Source: akademiakrasy.sk

This balcony garden idea proves you can grow a wide variety of edible food and herbs in a small space. Using a wooden pallet and chalkboard paint this culinary creation can be at your fingertips. When planning a vertical balcony garden, be sure to drill holes in the bottom of each level to allow water to pass through. This simple revision will keep your plants from developing root rot and prolongs the life of the wood. Also, when using pallets for edible gardening, make sure the wood hasn’t been treated with a wood preservative as this can leach into your plants.

    7. Tiny space, Big color

    Source: decocasadesign.ro

Bright colors bring emphasis to this tiny balcony garden design. This bland wall was transformed into a creative work of tangible art using well placed colorful pots. Matching plant markers keep the plants organized without attracting too much attention. The wood on the balcony floor visually blends with the home’s wood floor bringing the home’s design outdoors. A brightly colored ottoman blends perfectly with the pots further enhancing the home’s décor. Furthermore, a net around the balcony allows the door to be open ushering in fresh air and an unobstructed view from the home, without the fear of birds or leaves flying in.

    8. Private Oasis

    Source: cotemaison.fr

This private oasis was constructed using a creative balcony garden design. Placing the plants around the balcony edge in taller pots creates privacy while taking advantage of the existing tree. By bringing floor pillows and a blanket into this design, this balcony becomes an extension of the home. The rattan rug and rope covered ottoman compliment the bamboo chairs. Using these complimentary pieces conveys an island feel in this secluded balcony space. The wood has been stained a dark gray providing the perfect canvas for the balcony garden decor. And, of course, the water pitcher is an invitation to sit and relax.

    9. Upcycled Garden

    Source: homeinvest.pl

A raised garden is created here using a repurposed wooden crate. The height allows for easy care of the plants without bending. With a few simple modifications, you can have a nice raised garden on your balcony. To find free wood crates you can check with small automotive, motorcycle, lawn and specialty shops. They usually have parts shipped in them. Grocery stores also use food crates for produce and wine. By filling the lower half of the bed with empty milk jugs, two liter soda bottles, or unusable pots, you can save money by cutting down on the amount of dirt you need.

    10. Home Extension

    Source: adelaparvu.com

Functionality at its best describes this balcony garden idea. Bringing traditionally used indoor pieces to this space gives this balcony an indoor room feel. Flowers are grown in baskets as well as garden boxes. A citrus tree is growing in a metal bucket and flowers are blooming in the recycled wooden crate. Herbs and flowers are decorating wooden shelves and an old wooden chair seats a beautiful pink flower in the corner. Small home decor touches such as the tablecloth and vase of flowers give this balcony a café feel. The extension of the awning adds to the tearoom ambience.

    11. The Secret Garden

    Source: dekormyhome.ru

Sometimes you need a retreat you can escape to. This serene balcony garden is reminiscent of a secret Victorian garden with the ivy growing along the stone wall. Including a stone angel statue further confirms the feel. Growing trees in pots is a great way to add vertical elements. This design also incorporates stacking pots for added height. In this balcony garden design, rosemary is in bloom creating a delightful smell as well as adding a touch of purple color. The modest café table ensures a nice place to sit for coffee, tea, or simply a place to rest.

    12. The Hanging Garden

    Source: ark-arquitetura.tumblr.com

Garden balconies do not require a large footprint to be effective. When creating a balcony garden in a narrow space, hanging pots and baskets are key. This design allows many plants to grow in often neglected overhead space. Attaching planters to the balcony railing is another brilliant idea as it doesn’t require additional space. The end of this balcony has been reserved for floor space with a few pots on the floor. Because most of the garden is grown above and on the side of this balcony, there is room for a set of chairs and table maximizing the usefulness of this small space.

    13. Italian Flair

    Source: jardineriabordas. com

Inspired by an Italian window garden, this colorful balcony proves you can make a dramatic impact in a small space. Although there isn’t enough room for a table or chairs, this beautiful display of showy petunias is a showstopper. Window boxes are hung on the outside of the balcony where they can easily be seen from below. This design incorporates smaller pots on the inside of the balcony floor to grow greenery. By adding the greenery, a nice backdrop is provided for the petunias creating a seamless flow. Even the wall behind the balcony was used to display the beautiful flowers.

    14. Deck Balcony

    Source: happymodern.ru

If a deck is what you desire, consider adding wood deck tiles to your balcony garden design. This can be installed over your existing balcony floor with relative ease by a DIYer. Using neutral tones and different textile textures maintains the integrity of this peaceful, low key space. The patio fruit tree growing out of the galvanized can proves everyday objects can make fabulous planters for your balcony garden decor. By adding only one shade of purple flower to this design in matching galvanized containers, this balcony garden has a light and airy feel to it.

So many of our clients are now building smaller homes because they simply don’t need a bigger one. Seems smart for many reasons: less vacuuming, less heating and cooling, less taxes. And for many, less strain on the finances as we get to the point where retirement shines bright and hopeful.
For the jewel of a home we wanted to start with 1,000 square feet. Enough room for a pleasant common area, a couple of away rooms for bed and work, a couple of bathrooms and yes to a mudroom and pantry. (For Phil and Rocio’s, we ended up with 1,140 square feet.)
The Jewel would not compromise on design intent, or envelope craft intensity. This is the big benefit of the smaller footprint, of course. By using a pure and simple form for the house volume, a true jewel would have enough money in the budget for the highest quality materials, net-zero levels of insulation, triple pane windows, and a high-efficiency heat pump. Additionally, the doors would be handcrafted, the cabinets solid wood, the finishes exquisite, and craftsmanship shudderingly excellent.
Our many thanks to Phil and Rocio for including us in their dream home project. It is truly a Jewel!
From the homeowners (read their full note here):
“It is quite difficult to express the deep sense of gratitude we feel towards everyone that contributed to the Jewel…many of which I don’t have the ability to send this to, or even be able to name. The artistic, creative flair combined with real-life practicality is a major component of our place we will love for many years to come.
Please pass on our thanks to everyone that was involved. We look forward to visits from any and all as time goes by.”

Design of a veranda in the country – do-it-yourself decoration

Veranda can be open or closed. If it is insulated, it helps to expand the dimensions of the house. The room is often placed dining room, kitchen, library and work area, garden, creative corner. You can connect several directions at once.

Wind-blown and sun-sheltered outdoor building only required in good weather

The open-type design was created specifically for the summer season, when it will be comfortable to relax on it, thanks to the constant coolness. But it can only be used in good weather. Regardless of the type, it is better to place the terrace behind the house. If it becomes a continuation of the dwelling, then it is placed on the necessary side of the facade.

The design of the veranda must match the overall design of the house

The design of the veranda in the country can be done with your own hands. It is necessary to take into account several important nuances and it will turn out to embody functionality and beauty.

At each stage of arrangement, attention should be paid to the selection of materials, colors, details.

Light and space – the main decorations of the open veranda

All important design elements of the outdoor terrace are reflected in the table.

    Decoration Description
Guardrail Outdoor wood goes through many tests every day. Therefore, it is worthwhile to thoroughly approach the choice of variety. Pine is affordable, while oak is more reliable but expensive. The decorative grille can be positioned vertically, horizontally or crosswise. The distance between the sections can be any, as well as the shape of the product.
Sex The obvious option is wood. But due to regular exposure to moisture and sunlight, the coating will quickly become unusable. You can avoid this by annually covering the tree with special paint. For the floor, tile or linoleum is suitable. They are easier to care for and do not require regular painting.
Furniture Depends on the type of veranda. The closed view can be arranged like a regular home room. The open type involves the use of the terrace only in good weather. Therefore, it is reasonable to place folding products. If the weather changes dramatically, it will be possible to quickly assemble the structures. Choose models from artificial rattan. They have an attractive appearance, do not deteriorate from strong winds, exposure to moisture or the sun. You can put a sofa, a few hanging chairs. Wicker furniture is perfect for the veranda.
Landscaping The heat and direct rays of the sun can get boring, and you want to hide from the heat in the coolness. To do this, use curtains or landscaping. The latter involves the design of openings with climbing plants that perform several functions at once. They save from the heat and successfully decorate the appearance. Vertical gardening allows you to make the air more humid, and the dust content will decrease. A classic is the use of hedges.
Curtains You can complement the design with transparent curtains that create an airy atmosphere. There are special acrylic curtains suitable for the street. They are able to repel dirt and dust. Bamboo curtains or roll models are suitable. This design detail is not required when decorating a veranda, but if homeowners wish to decorate the design, it is recommended to use the options listed.
Lighting The gazebo is used not only during the day, but also in the evening. Therefore, it is recommended to pay special attention to lighting. A spotlight should be mounted in the roof of the structure. It will become the main one. An addition can be a garland placed around the entire perimeter. When placing lighting fixtures, remember safety. Devices must be reliable and resistant to moisture.

Design of a closed veranda in a private house

An enclosed veranda serves as a place to relax and unwind. Therefore, it is worth reliably protecting it from the weather, making it warm and appropriate in style to the general appearance of the house. Give up high-tech. It is too “cold” for such a room. Use more natural materials, living plants and wood furniture.

Wooden finishes combined with soft light create a warm and relaxing atmosphere

Sliding windows leading to the gazebo are popular. They help to easily turn a closed object type into a public one. You can make the mechanism automatic, controlled remotely. Glass construction will be expensive, but it will look impressive. There will be an overview of the entire territory of the site, but you will be under reliable protection from the weather.

Comfortable upholstered furniture and plenty of natural light

An excellent option is to place on the territory of the fireplace. There is a wide choice of models that allows you to choose an option for any room.

The fireplace will create a cozy atmosphere and will warm you up on cool evenings

Choosing a style for a summer cottage veranda

When decorating a veranda, it is important to stick to one style direction. The choice will be affected by the location of the object. If it is located east or north, then an English colonial interior will do. The furniture is made of rattan, a rocking chair is required.

For the terrace, buy furniture of good quality, practical and durable

Mainly use of wicker furniture. The most common solution when choosing country furniture due to its convenience and functionality. Colonial design suggests a fireplace. When closed, it will act as an additional source of heat.

The fireplace is appropriate both on the open terrace and in the closed veranda

Eastern and southern structures are designed mainly in the Provence style. There are wooden beams on the ceiling, furniture is made only from natural materials. Chairs and a table, many flowers placed in vases, serving as an additional element of decoration.

Provence style is associated with comfort, romance and lightness

If the classic options do not fit, there are many modern interiors. The basis is interesting combinations of finishing materials, such as glass columns. Complemented by low pieces of furniture.

Lighting on the veranda in the country house

The choice of lighting fixtures is influenced by the type of construction. For open objects, choose mainly street lamp models. They can withstand wet exposure and are impact resistant.

    Successful outdoor terrace lighting example

Agree that it is much more pleasant to look at the illuminated terrace than into the darkness

Choose models that match the overall interior, which will emphasize it more. It can be stylized lanterns for open gazebos. On this design there is more space for installing light. Watch out for the safety and strength of fastening them. Closed objects can be illuminated like normal rooms.

Space zoning on the country veranda

Most designs are elongated. There is a lot of space, therefore there are several segments for various purposes on the same territory. To avoid mixing them, it is recommended to carry out zoning, outlining the boundaries. This will make your stay comfortable.

When placing furniture on the veranda, leave more space for free movement

Plants in pots are great for zoning an outdoor terrace

You can place not only corners for relaxation, a dining area, but also a study. A closed veranda is great for increasing the usable area of the house. If there was not enough space inside to place a certain purpose, you can select a corner in the gazebo. Global zoning elements like massive partitions should be abandoned in view of the main purpose of the terrace. As an estimate for a vacation. Furniture should be correctly arranged, aisles should be arranged and supplemented with decorative details, which will reveal the subtle line between the segments.

A place for relaxation implies the obligatory presence of convenient and comfortable items in which you can relax perfectly. You can not buy new products. Old furniture, skillfully complemented by decor, slightly restored will give a special atmosphere to the place. Bright covers, upholstery change, painting will help. If there is enough space, arrange a large soft sofa, complete with pillows.

Upholstered furniture can be safely placed on a rain-protected veranda

If this space is intended to be used for eating and not just hanging out, be sure to place a table and chairs. Observe the measure. The space should not turn out to be cluttered, overloaded with unnecessary details. A place to rest implies the presence of space. Hang a hammock nearby. It will allow you to enjoy the sun if you wish, and then spend time in the cool shade of the terrace.

The extension can be of wood or have a metal frame with clapboard lining. Aluminum stained glass windows will do. They are installed on the base of the object. Walls will appear, the decoration of which is not required due to glazing. It just needs to be washed regularly. The plinth will remain to decorate. To do this, choose stone or brick.

Panoramic glazing on a metal frame will provide an all-round view and unity with nature

Glass blocks can be used for glazing. There is a wide range on the market. Models with frosted glass, corrugated or colored. You can combine them with each other to create a unique effect. The blocks are suitable for organizing lighting or creating panels. One of the negative aspects of such a finish is the price.

Make the windows as big as possible to enjoy great views

A combination of several options is allowed. One wall is allocated for glass blocks, the rest are made of aluminum stained-glass windows.

    Special garden parquet

was used for the flooring of this outdoor terrace

In the open type of object, the concept of finishing inside and outside is mixed. This applies to the design and decor in general. Therefore, wood is the most preferred. It is only important to properly take care of the material so that over time, negative street factors do not spoil the building. To create objects for many years, there is decking, which is a terraced board. It perfectly withstands all the negative aspects of the street and is suitable for finishing the veranda. The composition of the material contains polymer additives, which improves its strength and moisture resistance.

    Verandas with a glass roof

One possible design option is roof glazing. This idea seems to be effective. The glazing system is installed on pre-built supporting structures.

The glass roof of the veranda visually increases the size of the room, giving the extension lightness and airiness

This veranda will be bright all day

An additional advantage of this solution is significant energy savings. No need to install a lot of lighting fixtures. During the day there will be enough light inside. High-strength glass is used, so you can not be afraid of rain or the scorching rays of the sun. Double-glazed windows are reliable and perfectly protect the room.

Natural stone and wood in the interior of terraces

Stone is often used to decorate the floor. It may not end at the boundaries of the object, but go further into the yard, becoming paths. This allows you to create a common in the design of the entire site. The stone is used in the construction of the foundation. Externally, the design looks reliable, a little primitive. You can combine it with wood, creating interesting combinations. The object will look like a house in the forest, and not a place to relax on a country site.

Pronounced timber beams and stone-lined openings between windows

Stone can be used when installing a fireplace. The device will become a source of heat and a highlight of the room. The space near the fireplace should be supplemented with masonry to make everything look complete.

    Veranda design in bright colors

Light shades visually increase the space, give airiness, lightness and create an atmosphere of solemnity. A classic is the design of windows and ceilings in a snow-white palette, and the floor in dark colors. Suitable even for tiny terraces. A smooth transition from gray to white helps to add comfort and cleanliness. Be sure to complement the space with several bright details.

Light colors expand the space and create a truly festive mood in any weather

White window frames and a light ceiling echo the same shades of furniture and interior

For those who want to create a Scandinavian interior, light colors should be present throughout the room, including the floor and walls. Bright elements in the form of pillows, curtains will help to dilute the situation. This design is perfect for a dining room located on the veranda. A light color that is neutral makes a great backdrop for centering various details, including the fireplace. If the flooring is designed in white, it is worth diluting it by laying a carpet in a contrasting shade.

Arrangement of a corner for relaxing and reading on the veranda

A small reading nook can be created with an upholstered, comfortable chair next to shelving and shelves. Be sure to complement the place with a lamp.

    Cozy corner for comfortable reading

During the day the space is well lit, but in the evening you need enough light for reading. It is better to choose a distant corner for the design of the veranda in the country, so that the segment turns out to be quiet and cozy.

A dining area, a place to play with children, a mini-garden – all this can be realized on the veranda.

    Shutter Stock

The house has a veranda and you think what is the best way to fill it to make it comfortable and beautiful? First of all, you need to understand what exactly you are missing in the house and would like to see on the veranda. Do you want to relax while admiring the garden? Do you dream of exotic plants that you cannot grow in the garden? Love to dine outdoors? All these ideas, perhaps, one veranda will not accommodate, but it is quite possible to choose one. So, we tell you how you can equip the veranda.

    1 Place a dining table

And thus mark the place for the summer kitchen. If the veranda is very small, consider a folding table model and equip it with light folding chairs that can be folded and removed if necessary. A dining table is not only about feasts, if necessary, you can put a laptop on it and arrange a comfortable workplace in the fresh air. Or use it as a place to play with children: it’s more convenient (and safer for all other things) to paint on the table.

Using a hammock, you can organize not only a comfortable place for relaxation and daytime sleep, but also, for example, a reading area. Hang a hammock on the porch, put up a small shelving or shelf with books and hang a lamp (if it’s LED, you don’t even have to bring electricity outside the house), and the outdoor mini-library is ready. In addition, placing a hammock on the veranda is also convenient because you do not need to look for suitable trees or buy expensive supports for it – just fix the hook in the wooden ceiling or tie it on two poles in the neighborhood.

Another option is to make the sofa area, in fact, an additional living room. With it on the veranda it is convenient to receive guests, have tea parties and just sit comfortably and watch nature. If you have an open veranda, take into account the weather conditions when choosing furniture upholstery, or do it easier and put a set of rattan. You can sew a cover to protect the upholstery from the rain. By the way, with the help of such a cover, you can fit an old sofa from a city apartment into a new interior of the veranda, it will close the worn upholstery, and an unnecessary piece of furniture will get a chance for a new life.

Do you like sunbathing or just lying with a book? An excellent option for arranging a veranda in this case is one or more sun loungers. They are less dependent on weather conditions than, for example, a sofa or armchair, at the same time, this is a complete place to relax. In addition, a covered veranda will make your sunbathing more comfortable – you won’t have to look for shade all the time on the site, while you will receive the necessary portion of the sun.

3 Place a planter with flowers

Perhaps not the most functional, but very beautiful option – place a planter with flowers and arrange a mini-garden on the veranda. Unlike a garden bed, here you do not have to think about the quality of the soil, weather conditions and lighting. On the veranda, the conditions are milder than in the open field, and in summer they are generally almost the same as in the apartment. Therefore, the choice of colors that can be placed on the extension is significantly expanded. In addition, it is convenient if you have nowhere to put indoor plants when you leave for the country, and there is no place for new planters in a small house.

A playground in the garden is a good solution, but if weather conditions do not allow spending time there, you can make a spare play area on the veranda. To do this, you do not need to radically change the design or fill the entire area with toys. You can, for example, throw a bright rug on the floor and put an ottoman with a box inside where you put your child’s favorite toys. So you will not lose the usable area, and the child will be able to spend more time outdoors, regardless of the weather.

The issue of storing things in a country house is especially acute – there is not much space, but there are enough things. For example, put a chest for textiles or clothes, a couple of racks or even a full wardrobe. It is important to arrange all this ergonomically and beautifully so that the veranda does not turn into a warehouse.

Veranda and terrace design, photo: ideas and tips for decorating open and closed verandas, in a private house and in the country

    Terraces

Instead of going into details, what is the difference between a veranda and a terrace, we suggest focusing on their main similarities: this is the space on the border of the house and the garden, where you should feel good. How to achieve this? We talk about the design of the veranda and terrace in a private house and in the country.

    1. Do not get attached to the design of the main house.

Of course, the spaces of the main part of the house and the design of the veranda should not argue with each other. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t experiment. Whatever the windows and balconies in the city apartments, they will not allow you to feel in nature like in a private house. Therefore, let the design of the veranda or terrace be focused not so much on the “internal” as on the “external”. Natural finishing materials, natural colors and unobtrusive natural details can become a link between home and garden.

House of designer Natalia Maslova in the Moscow region. The terrace is attached to the house and glazed.

House of designer Natalia Maslova in the Moscow region. The terrace serves as both a dining room and a seating area.

    2. Home environment can help you.

Covered or open deck? To resolve this issue, take a look around: how windy the area is, how often it rains, how bright the change in seasonality is. After that, ask yourself what you expect from this space: placing a greenhouse with tropical plants on the veranda, if it is winter for nine months of the year, is unlikely to work (even glazing will not help here, the room will have to be insulated). At the same time, the open veranda has its undeniable advantages in the form of a morning breakfast in nature in the summer or evening tea drinking.

House in the forest, 300 m². The terrace is open on all sides, the outdoor kitchen only partially replaces the wall.

Nature will also help you to inspire your veranda. The coniferous surroundings of the forest prompted designer Elena Andreeva (already a fan of black) to use charcoal-colored transom bricks and deep dark porcelain stoneware in the decoration of the adjoining terrace. Supporting the idea is a teak table with a slate top. Spectacular black execution both from below, on the floor, and from above, under the roof, creates the effect of a widescreen cinema, in which a special place is given to nature: it is not held back by any walls – they simply do not exist. The absence of windows that can protect from the wind compensates for a real fireplace.

House in the forest, 300 m².

And the river helped set the mood and color for this house. The building stands on the banks of the Istra, so the theme of water is also reflected in the facade: the house is painted in a hazy blue hue, which is the main one for the terrace. A huge four-meter table joins the blue-gray palette, allowing the owners to arrange feasts right in the air. In another part of the terrace, a sofa and two chairs in the open air became a wonderful place to watch the floating clouds.

    House on the river bank.

    House on the river bank.

    3. Consider the habits and needs of the whole family.

Remember that the space must match its owner. If you rarely gather a large company at the dacha, then most likely the option with a long four-meter table and a DJ setup will not suit you. Prefer quiet calm evenings? Then equip a cozy study-library on the veranda: the view of the garden from the window will pacify, and if you make the space open, then while reading books you can breathe fresh air and hear the birds singing.

When planning the arrangement of her own country house, designer Natalya Maslova was guided by the traditions of her entire family. “When I was just doing the planning, my mother laughed at me: “Well, why so many tables?” And in the winter garden, and in the dining room, and a small one in the kitchen, and a large barbecue table on the street, – says Natalya. “But that’s the beauty of it. The family loves to get together on holidays and just like that.” Therefore, in addition to the dining area on the terrace, the designer placed a summer kitchen not far from the main house.

Street kitchen by Natalia Maslova. The terrace of the house can be seen in the background: in good weather, the windows can be fully opened.

This decision turned out to be so successful that the owners spend the whole summer here. Since the kitchen with a stove and barbecue is located here, you can only return to the house at night. But even in winter, the place does not lose its popularity: a well-thought-out reliable roof protects from rain and snow, and warm fur skins-capes, which replace the usual textiles on pillows, allow you not to give up long gatherings.

Not only the purpose of the space should be comfortable, but also the style. So, when designing a house in France, designer Olga Kushnareva-Leone did not offer customers a typical Provencal motif for these places. After interviewing the client’s family and receiving the wish “nothing rough and rough – only silky, smooth surfaces”, Olga settled on a more appropriate American classic without excessive decorative elements. The terrace is appropriate: modern wicker furniture is adjacent to pairs of columns and stucco on the ceiling. True, paying so much attention to wall and ceiling decor, do not forget to take into account the climate.

    House in France.

    4. Furniture should be not only beautiful, but also practical.

If you decide on an open veranda or terrace, you should take care of the furniture. Even those exterior items (including lighting and textiles) that you plan to put indoors for the winter should ideally still be outdoors: this way you don’t risk not recognizing your favorite chair after an unexpected downpour.

A striking example of the use of outdoor furniture is the summer terrace designed by ANCconcept. The atmosphere of the beach is set by sun loungers and bean bags, which are not afraid of bad weather. But the designers still decided to cover the area with a pergola and translucent polycarbonate, which allows the sun’s rays to pass through and at the same time protects from rain. And the most risky and those whose roof is “blue sky” should pay attention to wicker furniture. The fact that it can be reliable and at the same time elegant is confirmed by the project of a house in the Moscow region.

A house in the Moscow region designed by Inna Zavyalova.

    5. Allow yourself everything at once.

With careful space planning, a veranda or terrace can replace all the rest of the house (or almost all). A canopy over your head will create shade and allow you to relax here from the heat of the day, a table nearby will give you the opportunity to eat with great appetite, a comfortable lounge area will bring friends and family together, and a deck board will not allow you to slip after swimming in the pool (if there is one). The owners of a snow-white house in Spain were not ready to deny themselves at least one of the above. So the terrace has rightfully become a favorite place on the site.

Spanish passion: house in the suburbs of Alicante.

Spanish passion: house in the suburbs of Alicante.

The design of a veranda or terrace depends primarily on your desires. Photographer Vladimir Glynin, on the contrary, did not need anything but a pair of sunbeds and a modest table with a bench nearby. The fewer eye-catching details, the better. Therefore, the author of the project, Zurab Arabidze, hid the fireplace in the wall so that it is not visible from the facade of the building. “My daily life is oversaturated with art,” explains Glynin. “At home, I want to relax, and a clean space is best suited for this.” So no lists with tips will answer the question “How to arrange a veranda?” better than yourself.

Choosing a style for a summer cottage veranda

Before you start decorating a summer veranda in your country house, you need to choose a suitable stylistic direction. In this case, the location of the room plays an important role. For a veranda that faces east or north, an English colonial style design is perfect. Mandatory attributes of this style are rattan furniture, as well as a rocking chair. Wicker furniture is a real attribute of country life, as it is very comfortable and functional. On a colonial-style veranda, a fireplace would also be appropriate. If the room is closed, then the fireplace can also be used to heat the room.

Provence style is suitable for a veranda facing east or south. Distinctive features of this style are furniture made of natural materials, wooden beams on the ceiling. If traditional styles no longer surprise anyone, then you can try to design a summer veranda in a modern style. If you use traditional finishing materials and interior items, but try to arrange them differently, you will get a very interesting interior. For example, columns on an open veranda can be made of polycarbonate or glass, complementing the interior with modern low furniture.

Lighting on the veranda in the country house

Since the primary task is to turn the summer veranda into a cozy corner for relaxation, lighting plays an important role here. If the veranda is open, then it is better to install lamps on it that are of the “street” type. Such lamps are more impact resistant and have protection against moisture. Designer lamps, selected in a certain interior style, will look beautiful. In the interior of the summer veranda, stylized lanterns will look great. You can install several similar lamps of different heights. In this case, you can get interesting shadow and light effects that make the room cozy and set up to relax with family and friends. On an open-type veranda, lamps can even be installed on the railings and on the walls of a country house.

Zoning the space on the country veranda

In country houses, the country veranda, as a rule, has an elongated shape. Not infrequently, a lot of space is allocated for its arrangement. In such cases, it would be rational to divide the area of \u200b\u200bthe veranda into several functional zones. Zoning will allow, in addition to a comfortable and cozy seating area, to arrange a few additional small corners, for example, a personal office and a dining room. At the same time, it is not at all necessary to act globally and divide the veranda into several independent rooms. Sometimes just a little hint is enough: correctly selected and arranged furniture, necessary accessories and decorated aisles.

Furniture for the veranda in the country house

Since the veranda in the country house is, first of all, a place to relax, you simply cannot do without chairs and armchairs. It is not necessary to buy new furniture for these purposes. Old chairs can give your porch a new look by repainting them in an unusual color, sewing bright covers or changing the upholstery. The same applies to couches and sofas. Only here, in addition to the upholstery, you will also have to change the pillows. If the veranda in the country is spacious enough, even a large soft sofa can be placed on it.

Tables and tables deserve special attention. If a meal is supposed to be on the country veranda, then you simply cannot do without a dining table, as well as benches or chairs near it. If the veranda is planned only as a recreation area, then you can place a small coffee table on it. However, it should be remembered that the place for a good rest turned out to be cozy, the space should not be overloaded with unnecessary pieces of furniture.

A great idea for decorating a veranda in a country house is a hammock. The place for it must be chosen based on personal preferences. After all, some people like to spend their free time basking in the warm rays of the sun, others prefer to hide from the summer heat in a cool shady corner.

Design ideas for decorating a terrace Covered veranda decor

Veranda – an extension that acts as a connecting link in the duet “house – garden”. It is designed to combine the warmth of the hearth and the beauty of the surrounding nature. It also serves as a cozy corner where you can relax, enjoying the picturesque landscape, or organize fun gatherings with loved ones. How to equip an extension, and which design of the veranda to choose so that it turns out to be bright and comfortable, we will consider in more detail.

Before proceeding with the analysis of the intricacies of arranging the veranda, turning it into a cozy corner for relaxation, you should determine for yourself what type of construction the extension has.

    Type #1 – open-ended extensions

Many mistakenly believe that the open veranda is the same terrace in front of the house. The difference between the architectural elements is that the veranda is a room attached to the house, and the terrace is a platform on a separate base.

The terrace, like the veranda, can also be equipped with a roof or a shading canopy, but the usual walls are replaced by low fences

Light and space are the main decoration of open-air verandas. The design is designed to emphasize this dignity. As a lighting design for open verandas, pastel colors and shades that are as close as possible to natural colors are ideal.

To slightly cover open openings and at the same time diversify the landscape design, it is better to run climbing plants along the support posts: kampsis, clematis, wild grapes

Flowering lianas planted along the perimeter of the extension will act as an elegant decoration of the space and protect the room from dust penetration.

In the design of an open veranda, ultra-modern novelties will not look quite appropriate. For its design, traditional interior items are most successfully suited: wicker furniture, forged shelves, porcelain figurines.

    Type #2 – glazed structures

Whether or not to glaze the veranda is a matter of taste for every owner. You can glaze only part of the openings, or all windows.

Using frames of different sizes and designs, you can easily turn a closed room into an open and bright room

The verandas, which are glazed without the use of frames, look interesting. Glass ceilings literally erase the line between the interior and the surrounding nature. Frameless glazing is an excellent solution for arranging a winter garden on the veranda.

Thickened glass, allowing the sun’s rays to pass freely, will reliably protect the delicate foliage of exotic plants from gusts of wind in the cool months

Do you want to visually make a veranda with a small area more light and spacious? Then decorate the roof of the extension with glass inserts. The glass roof gives the appearance of the extension lightness and airiness.

A beautifully designed vaulted ceiling can act as the centerpiece of an extension, bringing a touch of originality and unusualness to the interior

Verandas with a transparent roof are literally immersed in bright streams of sunlight. Through the vaults of the domed glass roof, the sun’s rays will penetrate throughout the day, enlivening the room with their glow. Your task is only to enhance the effect by decorating the room with furniture in light shades and creating a light environment for a recreation area at minimal cost.

There are countless options for decorating verandas using textural, stylistic and color solutions. But still, to create a holistic and harmonious image, special attention should be paid to a number of points.

    Choosing finishing materials

Most often, porcelain stoneware or stone slabs are used as finishing materials for the flooring of verandas. This way of facing is not only attractive, but also practical. Moisture-resistant materials in an unheated room will not become damp in cold weather. And cleaning the surface from traces after pets or dirty shoes takes a minimum of effort and time.

The coolness of ceramic tiles is successfully compensated by the warmth of ceiling and wall wood panels. This technique is often used by designers, combining two natural materials – stone and wood

Able to emphasize the texture of brick or stone masonry. It remains only to complement the interior with wooden beams – and the situation will acquire a slight touch of country life.

Stone-finished wood flooring on the walls of the outbuilding forms a union close to nature, which fits so well into the design of a country house

Thanks to the harmonious combination of untreated natural stone with natural wood, you get the feeling that you are not within the walls of a suburban area, but in a house in the forest.

The use of wood of different species, each of which has its own unique shade, will allow you to create a unique and memorable interior. And the bright upholstery of upholstered furniture will support the warm color of the atmosphere you have created.

The arrangement of a stone stove or fireplace on the veranda is a fairly common design technique. The presence of a fireplace in a room that needs a source of heat will give an excellent opportunity to relax in comfort, admiring the picturesque landscape.

The highlight of the veranda, in the design of which there are elements of the classical style, will be a fireplace lined with natural stone

A cozy hearth against the backdrop of large, spacious windows and neutral furnishings create a calm and relaxing environment. Finishing the space with the use of masonry elements brings the spirit of antiquity into the interior, giving a feeling of reliability and safety.

    All about furniture and accessories

The design of a country veranda is also well-chosen comfortable furniture. It is selected depending on the size of the extension, focusing on the style direction of the design.

If the space is small, you should first of all determine for yourself which zones you plan to place in a small space.

If the area is limited to two or three square meters, you can simply put a couple of chairs or armchairs, setting up a tea corner

In order not to clutter up the territory, it is worth choosing folding furniture. To save space, use the furniture included with the window sills: folding sofas, tables with folding tops.

When arranging a more spacious room, where there is an opportunity to swing, a comfortable sofa can become the main decoration of the interior.

If the strong ceiling structures allow, you can even attach a hanging swing sofa decorated with decorative pillows

    to them

Furnishing a fully glazed room in which the furniture will be protected from the effects of the weather, you should only be afraid that it will fade under the influence of sunlight. Therefore, for decoration it is better to choose objects of unsaturated tones.

It’s great when the sofas and armchairs of such a cozy corner delight the eye with their natural origin. Wooden coffee tables, armchairs covered with cotton covers – all this will become the basis of the decoration of the open extension.

Wicker or rattan furniture is a great solution for a glazed porch: in the cold season it will serve as a great addition to the interior, and on warm days it can be taken out to the front lawn

Removable upholstered seats will help to arrange a comfortable seating area and add bright touches to the interior, enriching the color palette of the veranda.

A bright glazed veranda in front of the house is an ideal place for book lovers. Through large window openings from floor to ceiling, most of the day the sun’s rays penetrate the room. So why not use this advantage by setting up a home library with reading places on the veranda?

Place a large bookcase against the wall, place a comfortable sofa next to it, think about lighting for reading in the evening – and a cozy corner will become a favorite place for everyone in the household to have a good time

Furniture with forging elements looks very harmonious in the interior of the open annex. She is able to fit perfectly into styles with ethnic flavor:

    • Country – country style embodying ecological design;
    • Chalet – Alpine style, characterized by originality, simplicity and romantic design;
    • Provence – the interior of a provincial French house, ennobled by an abundance of floral solutions and design techniques when creating a “game of contrasts”.

Painted straw floor mats, wood sculptures, hunting trophies, porcelain vases with dried flowers and glass knick-knacks are the best decorations.

Soft sofas and ottomans, decorated with colorful pillows, and low tables, decorated with elegant jugs will help convey the aura of the East

As well as styles or chalets, it is characterized by an abundance of wooden interior items. A wide deck board as a floor covering, rough wooden benches and chairs will be an ideal solution for decorating ethnic styles. Tablecloths, chair covers and pillows in warm sandy shades will help complete the picture. Ceramic and clay amphorae and flowerpots placed on the tables and the floor will add a special charm.

In order to embody the Mediterranean style, creating an atmosphere typical of the South of France, it is desirable to artificially age the wooden surface of furniture and flooring

By coating the wooden elements with a special varnish, you will give them a spectacular vintage look.

Thinking through the design of the veranda in a private house, you should not use a large number of pieces of furniture in the design. They will only litter the space. It is better to decorate the interior with small accessories, using for this:

    • original candy bowls and vases;
    • whimsical figurines and boxes;
    • colorful rugs and covers for furniture.

These cute little things will help you create an atmosphere of home comfort.

How to choose the right curtains?

In open spaces or verandas framed by glass surfaces, there is often too much sun. The easiest way to solve this problem is to hang roller blinds. They are very convenient to use.

The canvases framing the veranda act as a kind of screen, creating a light-tight barrier, but it is enough to pull the rope and the window opening is opened

Veranda curtains play a key role in creating a harmonious design. Thick fabric curtains will save you from the scorching sun, and transparent and thickly draped curtains will be an excellent attribute for celebrations.

Canopy is a great addition to the interior: airy and almost weightless attire can bring a sense of harmony and purity

When designing a veranda in a Mediterranean or Scandinavian style, curtains made of light and translucent fabrics are the best fit. The combination of light shades creates a festive atmosphere of abundance of light.

Airy flying chintz or tulle in white tones leave an imprint of grace and elegance, creating the illusion of sky clouds frozen for a moment

Are you planning to create an original design of the veranda in the country? Then choose bamboo curtains. Vertical or horizontal blinds will easily fit into any interior you choose.

Thick bamboo curtains will create a reliable barrier to the penetration of sunlight, acting as a worthy addition to furniture in a neutral palette

Fabric curtains on outdoor verandas are best used only during the warm season, after which they can be removed from the eaves and hidden indoors.

    Greenery elements

Flower arrangements will become a real decoration of the veranda. Lively, beautiful and fragrant flowers will give a feeling of calm and peace, creating a favorable microclimate on the sunlit veranda.

Beautiful flowering petunias, geraniums and surfinias can be placed in hanging flowerpots by attaching them to window openings, or arranged on window sills and shelves

Forged racks decorated with several pots with ornamental leafy plants will be a spectacular addition to the design. And just dwarf trees and flowers placed everywhere in pots will unusually decorate the room.

In addition to ornamental plants, outdoor flowerpots and containers can be safely planted with horticultural crops: mint, oregano, thyme, lemon balm, rosemary

The pleasant aroma of essential oils emitted by spicy plants will become an additional source of pleasure from being in the bosom of nature.

Wooden and wrought iron products stylized as miniature carts, bicycles and easels are perfect as flower stands

Plant compositions can be supplemented by diluting them with varnished stumps, tinted branches or beautifully laid natural stones.

Before decorating the veranda, you need to choose whether your extension will be open or you decide to completely close it and make a cozy place with a gorgeous view from the window. This choice imposes some restrictions when choosing the necessary furniture and design in general.

In warm weather, the veranda can receive guests

The veranda is a great place for outdoor recreation and an open building with any type of roof, while it must be part of the house. The terrace is located outside the main building, so you should initially plan the design of the terrace. When building a terrace, an additional raised base is created, often at a certain elevation from the ground. It must be fenced, otherwise it will be considered an open area outside the house.

The veranda has a common foundation with the house, which distinguishes it from all other types of additional buildings. The advantage is that it can be built together with the house or erected as an additional structure. Often, verandas are created in a closed type, allowing you to decorate it even as a separate room, especially true in the summer.

To create a good view, choose a large space, while windows can be on 2-3 sides. The porch should not be confused with the veranda, because it has no roof and walls or they do not border on the main building. Do you want to create a full-fledged room, like in a private house? Insulate and completely close the extension, decorate it in the required style and arrange functional furniture.

Even in the smallest veranda you can organize a place to relax

How are terraces and verandas divided?

Verandas can be closed or open. To save time, it is worth planning the structure before the construction of the main building. If the foundation is solid, the risk of cracks on the walls of the additional building will be significantly reduced. The extension must be documented along with the plan as part of a private house or cottage. If you decide to create a veranda after the construction of the main building, be prepared to pay additional money to complete the entire package of documents. Exterior decoration should be as similar as possible or made in the same style with the whole house.

Equipped with a mechanism that allows folding roofs and walls. Built on foundation, easy to implement heating system

You can choose any type according to your desires and possibilities. It is better to take care of this even before building a house, the creation of a separate building will be much more expensive. In addition, you will lose time on the execution of an additional package of documents.

You can choose the design of the veranda. But there are certain rules for interior decoration that must be followed to create a cozy atmosphere. The extension is created close to nature, so the style should be as close to natural as possible.

    Style selection

The style must be the same as the house was decorated in or be as similar as possible to it. It is not necessary to create a veranda in an identical style, you can take the main points from the interior design of a private house and place them on the veranda. For her, styles such as country or Provence are best suited. Thanks to the interweaving of comfort and simplicity, you can create a place that is ideal for relaxation. The veranda can be glazed and you can spend your free time there even in cold weather

You can decorate the veranda with flowers

    Materials

Remember the basic rule: no artificial materials, everything must be natural. If you have a lot of space, you can make an additional stone wall that will resemble a loft. The floors are made using porcelain stoneware – a wear-resistant material that can last for a huge period of time, while it requires a minimum of maintenance effort. It is best to use panoramic glazing that transmits light, illuminating the plants.

Tip! Install glass sliding doors that allow freshness to enter at a certain moment or, on the contrary, to protect from rain.

The veranda is a great place for outdoor recreation

In the veranda you can put a sofa, a table and receive guests

    Layout

Choose according to the purpose of the veranda: you can create both a small cozy place to relax and a full-fledged dining room, hallway or living room. If you are not going to create a kitchen from an extension, it is enough to purchase a designer table and light chairs so that you can sometimes chat over a cup of tea. You can cook a barbecue, then you need a barbecue.

If you need a veranda for country feasts with a huge number of friends and relatives, then the layout must be carried out taking into account all the rules. Divide the area for cooking and eating separately. In the first one, you need to put an oven and a grill, a cutting table and separately purchase cupboards for dishes. Properly organizing the placement of kitchen furniture, you can rid yourself of the kitchen inside the house.

On warm days, the veranda is a great place to relax in the fresh air

You can put chairs in the veranda and spend your free time there

You can put a sofa in the veranda and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings

    Choosing furniture

Choose garden furniture, it is made of durable materials, perfectly tolerates external influences. Such furniture is not afraid of moisture, cold or strong sunlight. It is enough to buy one large table and comfortable chairs. You can put a large sofa for relaxing with the whole family.

If you are creating a room for relaxation, it will not be superfluous to put a coffee table. In the case of creating a full-fledged kitchen, purchase cabinets, otherwise they will be useless. A rocking chair and slides with various plants look great to create a relaxing atmosphere.

    Space around the main room

The veranda should be in the same style as the surrounding landscape. If there is a garden, it should organically continue the style of the extension. For example, you choose the English style for decorating the veranda, make sure that the garden was in the same style. It can be organically combined with other areas surrounding the house:

      Create your own greenhouse or small conservatory directly in the outbuilding;

      playground for children to have fun while adults are busy with their own business;

you can build a bathhouse and combine it with a veranda: take a steam bath, then eat barbecue.

With a responsible approach to design, a simple extension can turn into a full-fledged extra room or a functional resting place.

The veranda can be glazed and rested even when there is a strong wind outside

You can decorate the veranda with curtains, they will sway beautifully in the wind

What kind of curtains to choose for the veranda?

To complement the design of the veranda in a private house, curtains can be used, which can be:

      transparent – an easy option will help create a romantic atmosphere, it will not be able to protect you from the wind;

      Acrylic option – able to repel dust and dirt, a huge number of different options are available so that you can match the curtains to a certain style of the veranda;

      PVC film is the most practical option that can create comfort even in bad weather, but it looks much worse than the previous two options;

The type of curtains in a private house must be selected based on your requirements. If you want to protect yourself from the sun and curious neighbors, you should choose classic fabric curtains, fastened on hooks. It is worth tying up with special ties, the most popular options are magnets and hairpins. It is not worth tying the curtains very high, and also observe symmetry.

    Should I add plants?

It is incredibly hot in Russia in the summer, you can save yourself from this not only by curtains and curtains, but also by planting plants. Vertical landscaping is ideal for an open veranda to cover existing openings. Our climate is favorable for various climbing plants, so you can give the veranda an incredible appearance and at the same time save yourself from the sun at no additional cost.

Vertical gardening can make the air more humid by reducing dust levels. If you want to give an unusual look to the extension, you can independently purchase rare plants, but you will have to spend a considerable amount of money. You can use the classic version: hedges serve as decoration. It is worth decorating the veranda not only inside, but also outside, planting coniferous trees and small shrubs nearby.

The veranda is built to become a great place where you can take a break from everyday hustle and bustle, relax and forget about all the problems. On the contrary, you can make it a place to work with an ideal view.

Many mistakenly believe that the open veranda is the same terrace in front of the house. The difference between the architectural elements is that the veranda is a room attached to the house, and the terrace is a platform on a separate base.

Light and space are the main decoration of open-air verandas. The design is designed to emphasize this dignity. As a lighting design for open verandas, pastel colors and shades that are as close as possible to natural colors are ideal.

Flowering lianas planted along the perimeter of the extension will act as an elegant decoration of the space and protect the room from dust penetration.

    Type 2 – glazed structures

Whether or not to glaze the veranda is a matter of taste for every owner. You can glaze only part of the openings, or all windows.

The verandas, which are glazed without the use of frames, look interesting. Glass ceilings literally erase the line between the interior and the surrounding nature. Frameless glazing is an excellent solution for arranging a winter garden on the veranda.

Do you want to visually make a veranda with a small area more light and spacious? Then decorate the roof of the extension with glass inserts. The glass roof gives the appearance of the extension lightness and airiness.

Most commonly used as finishing materials for flooring
verandas use porcelain stoneware or stone slabs
. This way of facing is not only attractive, but also practical. Moisture-resistant materials in an unheated room will not become damp in cold weather. And cleaning the surface from traces after pets or dirty shoes takes a minimum of effort and time.

    Wood flooring
is able to emphasize the texture of brick or stone masonry. It remains only to complement the interior with wooden beams – and the situation will acquire a slight touch of country life.

Thanks to the harmonious combination of raw natural stone and natural wood
creates the feeling that you are not within the walls of a suburban area, in a house in the forest.

    Application different types of wood
, each of which has its own unique shade, will allow you to create a unique and memorable interior. And the bright upholstery of upholstered furniture will support the warm color of the atmosphere you have created.

Arrangement of a stone stove or fireplace on the veranda
is a fairly common design technique. The presence of a fireplace in a room that needs a source of heat will give an excellent opportunity to relax in comfort, admiring the picturesque landscape.

A cozy hearth against the backdrop of large, spacious windows and neutral furnishings create a calm and relaxing environment.

Finishing the space using masonry elements
brings the spirit of antiquity into the interior, giving a feeling of reliability and safety.

    Everything about furniture and accessories

The design of a country veranda is also well-chosen comfortable furniture. It is selected depending on the size of the extension, focusing on the style direction of the design.

If the space is small, you should first of all determine for yourself which zones you plan to place in a small space.

In order not to clutter up the territory, it is worth choosing folding furniture. To save space, use furniture included with window sills:

    • folding sofas,
    • tables with folding tops.

When arranging a more spacious room, where it is possible to swing, the main decoration of the interior can be a comfortable sofa
    .

    Removable upholstered seats
will help to arrange a comfortable seating area and bring bright touches to the interior, enriching the color palette of the veranda.

The bright glazed veranda in front of the house is an ideal place for book lovers.
Through large window openings from floor to ceiling, most of the day the sun’s rays penetrate the room. So why not use this advantage by setting up a home library with reading places on the veranda?

    • Country
      – rustic style embodying ecological design;
    • Chalet
      – Alpine style, characterized by originality, simplicity and romantic design;
    • Provence
      – the interior of a provincial French house, ennobled by an abundance of floral solutions and design techniques when creating a “game of contrasts”.

    For decoration
Painted straw floor mats, wood sculptures, hunting trophies, dried flower vases and glass trinkets are best suited.

, as well as country or chalet styles, characterizes the abundance of wooden interior items.

By coating the wooden elements with a special varnish, you will give them a spectacular vintage look.

Thinking through the design of the veranda in a private house, you should not use a large number of pieces of furniture in the design. They will only litter the space.

It is better to decorate the interior with small accessories, using for this:

    • original candy bowls and vases;
    • whimsical figurines and boxes;
    • colorful rugs and covers for furniture.

These cute little things will help you create an atmosphere of home comfort.

How to choose the right curtains

In open spaces or verandas framed by glass surfaces, there is often too much sun. The easiest way to solve this problem is to hang roller blinds
. They are very convenient to use.

Veranda curtains play a key role in creating a harmonious design. Fabric blackout curtains
will save from the scorching sun, and transparent and thickly draped curtains
will be an excellent attribute for celebrations.

When designing a veranda in a Mediterranean or Scandinavian style, curtains made of light and translucent fabrics are the best fit. The combination of light shades creates a festive atmosphere of abundance of light.

Forged racks decorated with several pots with ornamental leafy plants will be a spectacular addition to the design. And just dwarf trees and flowers placed everywhere in pots will unusually decorate the room.

The pleasant aroma of essential oils emitted by spicy plants will become an additional source of pleasure from being in the bosom of nature.

Plant compositions can be supplemented by diluting them with varnished stumps, tinted branches or beautifully laid natural stones.

Today there are many interesting styles and original design directions, thanks to the variety of which you can choose what you really like.

The main thing is that the design of the country veranda is in harmony with both the architectural ensemble of the house and the surrounding landscape.

Do you want to create a romantic corner for meetings and relaxation in the garden, turn breakfasts and tea parties into a pleasant pastime for the whole family, effectively decorate your terrace for receiving guests?

Then create a “summer dress” for your own garden! For these purposes, there is a way to decorate recreation areas with the help of various draperies and fabrics, so elegant and airy at the same time. Here, the scope of imagination is unlimited, since the use of fabrics is both a romantic and practical solution. When choosing a fabric for decorating a terrace or other places for relaxation (pergolas, gazebos, tents, awnings), the following principles are followed:

    • For a garden or terrace, it is best to choose natural fabrics – linen and cotton, they perfectly let in fresh air. Such fabrics must be chosen in white and light pastel colors.
    • The choice of artificial fabrics has its advantages – an unlimited color palette and resistance to fading. Fabrics such as organza must be translucent.
    • Usually the fabric is chosen either to match the garden furniture or as a contrasting color scheme. Here you can create both an exciting drapery and leave the fabric canvases even. You can be original by turning the terrace with the help of various drapery, canopy and canopy techniques into a fabulous ship with sails.

To create a luxurious and original terrace, we offer you the following decor options using fabrics:

    1. You can place accents around the entire perimeter of your terrace or just on one side – hang curtains
or gauze fabrics in bright contrasting or, conversely, soothing colors. Unusual shades of orange or green will certainly cheer up others. Violet, crimson or turquoise tones will help create a fabulous setting from the Thousand and One Nights.
    2. To focus on a pattern or ornament, the technique of choosing two-color fabrics will help. If there are already other color prints on the terrace, then the right solution would be to choose a plain pattern on a white background. With the help of light blue tones, you can enhance the classic style, which can also be created using floral patterns or vignettes. With the help of a cell, you can emphasize country chic. Marine style is created using striped fabrics and thematic patterns.
    3. The epitome of peace and relaxation are snow-white and beige curtains, which give elegance and airiness to the atmosphere. Such a corner for relaxation will recreate the expensive decoration of a foreign resort.
    4. If your terrace is located directly in front of the entrance to the house, then the exit to it can also be decorated with expensive fabrics. This technique is very popular in Morocco and France.
    5. With vertical drapes
you can get rid of excess sunlight on the terrace. The fabric is usually chosen of the same type that is used to decorate the walls of the terrace. In order to enhance the effect of protection from the sun, you can place the canopy directly above the table itself. The color of the canopy can be in the tone of the tablecloth or white.
