What is Semi Formal Dress Code?

When it comes to dressing for semi-formal events, nailing the perfect ensemble can be tricky. The code, which, in terms of formality, sits above cocktail attire and below black tie, can be somewhat confusing for those who are unfamiliar with it. To make dressing for a semi-formal function simple, try choosing a polished and fashionable dress that finishes around knee level. Alternatively, a chic suit can also work for women.

Semi Formal vs Formal

As its name suggests, semi-formal is a mixture of sophisticated dressing and a more relaxed style. As such, it is more casual than formal dress codes, such as black tie. So, while you would likely wear a full-length gown for a formal function, a chic knee-length dress is often a more appropriate choice for semi-formal events.

FAQs

What is considered semi-formal for a woman?

Semi-formal outfits should be sophisticated and polished. They are less formal than black tie events but smarter than cocktail attire. The balance should fall somewhere in between. While you should wear an evening gown to formal functions, you can also wear a dress that falls at the knee or below for semi-formal wear. If pants are more your liking, a tailored suit is an excellent alternative. Stick to solid, neutral colors for a sleek appearance. High heels are the best option for footwear, and classics like pumps are versatile and comfortable.

Can you wear jeans to a semi formal event?

Semi-formal events may be more relaxed in terms of what you can wear than formal events, and while you may not be required to wear an evening gown, you can also not wear jeans. Jeans are casual, even the fitted, darker shades. If you prefer not to wear a dress, tailored pants are an excellent alternative. Stick to neutral colors for a sleek appearance.

What should you not wear to a semi-formal wedding?

If you have been invited to a wedding and the invite stated that it was semi-formal, this means you should dress well and look smart and sophisticated. Semi-formal wedding outfits for women can be well-fitted dress that is either knee-length or longer. Consider the color of your garment as you want to avoid white and off-white shades. Choosing solid, neutral colors is a great option. You should not wear anything revealing or overly casual, for example, jeans and a T-shirt. Pay attention to your footwear and accessories and avoid anything flashy or oversized.

Can you wear a maxi dress to a semi-formal wedding?

Maxi dresses can be stylish, comfortable, and are flattering on most body shapes. If you have been invited to a semi-formal wedding, a maxi dress is a great choice. You want to consider a few things, including the fit, fabric, and print. Good quality fabric is important, and so is color and print. Sticking to solid, neutral colors can often look more sophisticated and are easier to mix and match with jewelry and accessories.

Does semi formal require a jacket?

A semi formal outfit does not require a jacket for women, but it can be a nice touch. If you are expecting to be cold during the event, you can wear a shawl, a fitted blazer, or a faux fur wrap. Choose a solid, neutral color.

Is semi formal long or short dress?

Short dresses may not be appropriate for formal events, which require an evening gown, but they can be worn to semi-formal occasions. You can wear both long or short dresses, but consider your chosen garment’s style, fit, fabric, and color. The idea with semi-formal clothing is that you want to appear polished but more relaxed than what the formal dress code dictates. Day or nighttime, the type of function you are attending can also help you establish which outfit will work best.

In This Article

What Is Semi-Formal Attire?

In simple words, semi-formal attire is less casual than business wear but more formal than regular party wear. However, there are no hard and fast rules. Ultimately it depends on where you are going and whether you need to inch towards being dressy or classy. Let’s see how you can deal with it differently.

Best Semi Formal Attire For Women – Outfit Ideas

1. Semi-Formal Attire For A Wedding

Traditionally, weddings are all about formal dressing. And you are expected to dress that way, unless otherwise specified for a destination or a beach wedding. However, that’s changing too, and weddings are turning out to be more relaxed than they were back in the day. So, here’s a dress that checks off all the boxes for semi-formal wedding attire. This flouncy one-sided shoulder red dress comes with a formal pattern but with a contemporary twist. Carry a clutch and wear ankle strap sandals, and you’ll need no other accessories.

2. Semi-Formal Cocktail Attire

Cocktail parties are one of the most common occasions most of us get invited to. It seems to be a tough nut to crack for most women because, let’s be honest, we don’t always have an exclusive cocktail dress to spare. Just like T-shirt dresses, formal shirt dresses are coming up to speed. Here’s a chiffon red shirt dress that can come to your rescue. The next time you go shopping, pick up dresses like these because they go a long way.

3. Semi-Formal Attire – Pants And Blouse

Instagram

Headed to a luncheon with a business associate or a potential client? Or maybe you are off to somewhere you cannot be wholly casual and want to tread cautiously with your outfit? A pair of cotton or khaki ankle length pants styled with a semi-formal linen, cotton or chiffon blouse is just perfect. Carry a sling bag, choose fine jewelry, and put on some neutral makeup with a bright lipstick to complete the look.

4. Semi-Formal Outfit – Jeans And Top

Chokers and everything 90s are coming back with a bang. Not just chokers as accessories, but as chokers tops too. Yes, they can be more than just casual – here’s proof. Sport a boot-cut or boyfriend jeans with a choker style top, and you have created a semi-formal outfit – as simple as that.

5.

Semi-Formal Jumpsuit

Instagram

Jumpsuits usually mean all things casual and fun. But, if dealt with the right way, they can lean towards semi-formal – just like this one. Pair it with wedges and a tote bag to keep up with the slightly serious vibe.

6. Semi-Formal Attire For Interview

Instagram

Do you have an interview to attend? Are you flying out of the city for a conference? Are you bored of wearing a crisp white shirt and formal pants? Here’s how you meet in the middle between your formal pants and arrive at something not-so-formal. Pair a pencil skirt with a ruffle top in a neutral color palette and voila! You have an exciting set of semi-formal interview clothes.

7. Semi-Formal Attire Skirt And Blouse

Instagram

Talk about business clothing, and a white shirt comes to mind. Here’s how you can manage to spin it with a patterned skirt instead of a dull pair of pants. Make sure the slit is not too deep, and finish the look some suave stilettos.

8. Semi-Formal Attire In Black And White

When you get an invite for a party or an event that says business casuals or semi-formals, specifying a theme like black and white, we want you to think beyond the clichéd combinations. Here’s an off-shoulder dress to show off your style and body with an ensemble that is impeccably elegant yet fun.

9. Semi-Formal Beach Attire

Instagram

A beach party! But did you know that resorts and hotels have a particular dress code for their signature parties? So, choose a red georgette cross-over dress. While red takes care of being all classy, the cross-over pattern adds a little zing to the outfit. Finish it with a sexy pair of pumps and a hat for some fun.

10. Semi-Formal Attire For A Dinner Party

Dinner parties straight up mean that the vibe will be a little less casual, but there is some etiquette to these. Does that mean we get all clichéd and boring about it? Of course not. Go with a classic LBD, but with a more formal vibe to it – like this satin sheath dress. Let your makeup and sandals be neutral. Carry a classy clutch.

11. Semi-Formal Office Attire

Wearing the same boring outfits to work day in and day out can make your life very mundane. You can subtly move away from it without being loud about it. The idea is to add a little definition to your pants, tops, or both. The trick is to keep the color palette muted and play with the silhouette – that’s how you ace those semi-formals looks.

12. Semi-Formal Dress With Long Sleeves

Instagram

Long sleeves are usually a little more serious, but sweater dresses are not. Can we make them work for us, though? Of course, we can! Instead of your regular T-shirt or informal party dresses, work with a sweater dress the next time to create a semi-formal look. Remember, your accessories and makeup are the game changers here.

13. Semi-Formal Black Slit Dress

Bored of the same old stereotypes for dinner parties? Here’s a dress that beats the monotony but also doesn’t look like you’re too callous about it. A long, cami-style slit dress with ankle-strap heels, beach waves, and a sequined side body bag is a fun way to nail this look.

14. Semi-Formal Short Dresses

Instagram

No, we are talking about more than just boring straight cut business wear that we all have had enough of. At least rebel with colors! Here’s proof that if you experiment you will always have a great final product.

15. Plus Size Semi-Formal Dresses

Nothing ever beats black when it comes to camouflaging those curves. Then again, it does not mean we have to stick to old-school formal silhouettes. Break the pattern with a semi-formal dress, wear hoops that are not-so-formal, but also balance it with your hair, accessories, and footwear.

When it comes to semiformal attires, women are spoilt for choice. Whether its a beach wedding, an interview, or a party theme, a semiformal attire helps you keep it fun while not seeming too loud. Dress, skirts, trousers, or even a well-styled chiffon saree can be your choice. Pick one from the many options mentioned above to suit your style, occasion, and preference. Style it with the right hairstyle and makeup and you are all set to steal the limelight.

Every Wedding Guest Dress Code, Explained

Have you ever received a wedding invitation that left you completely clueless about the wedding guest dress code? Between “black-tie optional” and “semi-formal,” the language can be tricky to decipher.

“While many couples would like their guests to arrive in black-tie attire, the most common wedding dress code is formal attire,” says Alicia Mae, CEO of the New Jersey-based wedding planning company ILÈ Events.

Meet the Expert

• Alicia Mae is a New Jersey-based wedding planner and the CEO of ILÈ Events. She has planned over 50 successful weddings and events.

• Heidi Kallett is CEO of The Dandelion Patch, a luxury stationery and invitation boutique in the DC-metropolitan area.

• Caitlin Wechtaluk is the owner and designer of Caitlin Creative Works invitations and event branding in Rockville, Maryland.

Formal attire may be the most common, but there are plenty of other dress codes that may appear on a wedding invitation. Formal, semi-formal, and casual are a bit more ambiguous than, say, black-tie, and it can be difficult for guests to settle on the level of formality they want to go for.

One of the best ways to decide what to wear is to do some research on the venue. “As a guest, I would first think of the wedding location as the background that sets the tone,” Mae says. “A quick Google search of the venue can give you a feel of the wedding style, and the venue will have photos of past weddings that can inspire you.”

If you’re stressed out about style, we’ve got you covered with our handy guide. Here are the most common wedding guest dress codes explained so that you arrive appropriately—and stylishly—dressed for the celebration.

Photo by  Jessica Olah/Brides

White-Tie

This is the most formal wedding attire possible (think: White House state dinners). Women should wear a formal floor-length evening gown, no exceptions. Pair your dress with jewelry, heels, and an elegant clutch. Men are required to wear a tuxedo with tails, a formal white shirt, white vest and bow tie, white or gray gloves, and formal footwear, such as derby shoes or oxfords.

Black-Tie

This is the next most formal wedding dress code and usually means the wedding is an evening event. Women should wear a formal floor-length gown that does not reveal the ankles at the hem of the dress, but if the wedding seems a bit less formal, a sophisticated cocktail dress may also be acceptable. Women may also wear elegant pantsuits. Men must wear a tuxedo. A black bow tie, black vest or cummerbund, and patent leather shoes are also suggested. For summer weddings, a white dinner jacket and black tuxedo trousers are also acceptable.

Formal or Black-Tie Optional

The wording here indicates something slightly less formal than black-tie is acceptable. So, a tuxedo isn’t required, but the event is still formal enough for one to be appropriate. The choices are the same as with black-tie: a floor-length gown, a fancy cocktail dress, or a dressy pantsuit. As far as women are concerned, there’s not much of a difference between black-tie attire and black-tie optional attire, although Mae says it’s more acceptable to wear a dress that shows the ankles (which is not true of a black-tie dress code). Men have the option of wearing a tuxedo, or they can wear a formal dark suit, white shirt, and conservative tie.

Cocktail

A small step above semi-formal, though not as formal as black-tie optional or black-tie, cocktail attire is a popular dress code choice. It’s a balance between elegant and comfortable and typically more formal than a day wedding but more casual than a night celebration. Instead of a floor-length dress, women should opt for a tea-length, knee-length, or midi dress. Men are required to wear a suit and tie, regardless of the wedding’s setting. Remember to look classy and polished, but don’t wear something overly embellished or fancy that you take away from the newlyweds.

Semi-Formal or Dressy Casual

Part of dressing for a semi-formal or dressy casual wedding is taking the time of the wedding into account. Wear darker, more formal colors for an evening wedding,and opt for light colors and fabrics for a daytime event. Try a below-the-knee dress or a dressy skirt and top. An elegant pantsuit is also appropriate. Floor-length gowns, however, would be inappropriate. Pair with heels, nice wedges, or formal flats. If the ceremony is being held outdoors and you’ll be walking across a lawn, avoid traditional heels that will likely get stuck in the grass. Men should wear a dress shirt and slacks, dark or light depending on the time of day, with the option to wear a tie. “Semiformal gives you flexibility on comfort, but be sure not to dress too casual,” Mae says.

The Ultimate Guide to Wedding Guest Attire

Festive

This dress code is relatively new and will leave many guests scratching their heads. Basically, guests are given the go-ahead to have fun and play with their look. Opt for cocktail party attire featuring bolder colors and playful accessories. Women should wear a cocktail dress or party dress in a fun color paired with playful accessories and heels or dressy flats. Men should sport a suit, jazzed up with a bright tie or creative pocket square.

Casual

This indicates the wedding will likely be held outdoors or on the beach, meaning the event will be much more laid-back, especially when it comes to attire. With that said, jeans, shorts, and tank tops are probably not appropriate unless they’re specifically noted as acceptable. A summer sundress is appropriate (just make sure the fabric isn’t overly formal). Wedges or dressy sandals are the perfect footwear for a casual wedding, but sandals and sneakers are not. Wear dress pants or khaki pants with a collared shirt. You can add a tie or sports jacket if you’d like, but it’s not required. If it’s chilly, feel free to add a sweater as well. Steer clear of any t-shirts or tennis shoes.

Tropical or Destination

Tropical weddings are usually humid and hot affairs, and you have to dress accordingly. Remember, always err on the dressier side of caution. If you’re not sure if what you’re planning to wear is dressy enough, it’s probably not. Upgrade it a notch and you’re certain to be just fine. As with a casual wedding, look for cotton sundresses and nice sandals or wedges. If the wedding is being held outside and the weather is blazing, consider topping the look off with a sunhat.

Guayabera shirts almost always count as appropriate wedding attire in the tropics. Known more commonly as “Mexican wedding shirts,” these short-sleeved, button-down shirts usually have decorative square pockets, and often have embroidery. They’re available in a huge variety of colors and styles. Most designer labels also have their own version of the guayabera if you’re looking for something a little fancier.

Although linen shirts and pants are also appropriate for a tropical wedding, be cautious in selecting them when you’re traveling. Linen usually wrinkles easily, and there may not be a dry cleaner to press it back out in a more remote destination.

Concept Style/Themed

Some couples are host concept or themed weddings, and they request that their guests follow the theme with their attire. For example, some couples ask for their guests to all wear one color, Mae says. This is especially popular in the instance of an “all-white formal” dress code. It’s a stylistic choice that helps the couple create their desired aesthetic. “Another option is inspired looks, like Gatsby or Roc Nation Brunch,” Mae says. Guests can look for inspiration from films or celebrities, depending on the theme.

Come As You Are

According to Mae, some couples ask their guests not to fuss about their attire and show up how they see fit and are comfortable. This attire can work for a casual wedding on the beach, she says. This may be confusing to some guests, so take into account what the couple normally wears, the location of their wedding, and the time of day it’s taking place to help you decide. “An essential tip is to know yourself as a guest,” Mae says. “As the saying goes, ‘If you look great, you feel great!’ Make sure you’re confident in your attire to not feel under- or overdressed.

Wedding Invitation Attire Wording Best Practices

More and more brides are skipping dress codes on their invitations. We understand if you don’t want to add the already-vague “Festive Attire” to the invite, but if you want to avoid guests bothering you with closet questions, you might want to consider paying more attention to what goes on that invitation. If you’re worried about how to get the dress code across without spelling it out, there are subtle hints you can include. “Guests can better understand how to dress based on the wording, font choices, and colors a bride selects,” Kallett says. “Any reputable stationer can help guide you through the countless details that will honor your vision and the formality or informality of this important day.”

Where to Include the Dress Code

“Invitations are one of the first things guests formally receive about your wedding, so it’s the perfect opportunity to set the stage for the look and feel of the celebration you’re planning,” Wechtaluk says. “Use your invitations as an opportunity to communicate what to expect, from attire to the overall vibe you seek to create for your guests.”

Formatting for dress codes

If you are set on a black-tie wedding, consider more customary phrasing on your invitation. “When hosting a formal affair, it’s best to not stray from the traditional etiquette guidelines,” Kallett says. “The request line should say something along the lines of ‘request the honor of your presence’ or ‘request the pleasure of your company.’ If an invitation is worded ‘happily invite you to the best day ever,’ it is usually an indication that the event is not formal.”

Where to Place the Dress Code Information

“Simply put, a formal affair is after six o’clock and the words black tie or white tie are included on the reception card,” Kallett says. If your wedding starts after six, expect guests to come a little more dressed up unless you say otherwise. If you’re having an earlier wedding, guests may choose cocktail or garden attire as their go-to dress.

FAQ

  • There is a range of options when it comes to purchasing a wedding guest dress or outfit, from department stores to online retailers. Top choices include Nordstrom, Macy’s, Dillard’s, and David’s Bridal for more formal attire, or places like Anthropologie, Free People, ASOS, or even Amazon for less formal dress codes.

  • If no dress code is indicated on the wedding invitation or by the couple, use context clues to decide what to wear, like the formality of the wedding invitation, the venue, the time of day of the wedding, the season, and the religion of the ceremony. When in doubt, a knee-length cocktail dress for a woman and a dark suit for a man will usually suffice.

  • First and foremost: don’t wear a white dress (unless the couple requests all-white attire as a stylistic choice). Further, avoid matching the colors worn by the bridal party, wearing anything that is too revealing, sexy, or flashy, or opting for clothes that are overly casual, like jeans and sneakers, even at a casual-attire wedding.

These Are the Best Spring Wedding Guest Dresses for Every Dress Code and Style

What to Wear to a Fall Wedding With Any Dress Code

Figuring out what to wear to a fall wedding can be tricky—the strapless gowns and backless dresses that wowed in the summer can leave you shivering in the fall, and the soft pastels that were the perfect color in the spring turn gauche as the leaves change. With a new season comes a new style, and we’ve got your guide for what to wear.

For a classic fall look, choose a rich jewel tone like fuchsia, sapphire, or emerald. You can also take color inspiration from the changing color of the leaves and go with an autumn orange, mustard yellow, or deep maroon. For a more muted look, you can choose a charcoal or caramel gown. You can never go wrong with sophisticated black (that’s right—you can wear black to a wedding).

No matter the dress code, experts Pia Arrobio, Lisa Grotts, Anita Patrickson, and Elaine Swann weigh in on what to wear to every type of wedding. Get ready to take notes as you read ahead.

Meet the Expert

  • Pia Arrobio is the designer behind LPA, the women’s clothing label known for its street-ready style with a hint of edge.
  • Lisa Grotts, known as The Golden Rules Gal, is an etiquette expert with over 20 years of industry experience.
  • Anita Patrickson is a Los Angeles-based fashion stylist and the Founder & CEO of Amanu Studio.
  • Elaine Swann is a wedding etiquette expert and the founder of The Swann School of Protocol.

To a Formal or Black Tie Fall Wedding

No matter the season, formal is formal. When a fall wedding invitation says “black tie,” that means you’re wearing a formal gown or your fanciest cocktail dress. According to Lisa Grotts, an etiquette expert, you absolutely need to dress the part. “A formal fall wedding requires a man to wear a tuxedo and a woman to wear a formal gown. Women have wiggle room because a short, traditional cocktail dress can also work, or even a dressy pantsuit,” she explains.

Try to stick with fabrics like silk and tulle for an elegant look. Also, be mindful of the shoes you pair with your formal attire—it makes all the difference. Opt for a sleek stiletto heel or a chic pair of slingback heels.

To a Black Tie Optional Fall Wedding

One way to stand out in the sea of formal gowns and cocktail dresses is to incorporate a dramatic accent like feathers. “Feathers are a fun trend I like to pair with classic Manolo Blahnik heels,” advises designer Pia Arrobio. Though they can be a bold embellishment, we love them on the hem of a timeless little black dress—for example, the way they’re accenting this Alberta Ferretti sheath. This will definitely let your Manolos get some shine. And you can wear your hair down or in an updo as the focal point is all about your curves and legs.

“When it comes to weddings, I usually like to stay on the side of making more of an effort rather than less. It feels a little more courteous to the couple, and the extra energy you are putting in goes a long way to show how special and important you acknowledge the day to be,” explains fashion stylist Anita Pattrickson. According to Patrickson, short dresses are discouraged, and you should stick with at least a midi-length dress.

Grotts also suggests cocktail attire for a black-tie optional wedding. “Cocktail attire works for women, and a dark suit works for men,” she says. Grotts further explains that black-tie optional is not always clearly defined, but if you read between the lines, it generally means that the host will be wearing a tux, and they hope that their guests will as well, but it is not a requirement.

To a Semiformal Fall Wedding

Semi-formal wedding attire is more relaxed than a black-tie wedding. For women, dresses and gowns don’t need to be floor length, and for men, a tux isn’t required. Patrickson explains to choose dresses from midi up to mini in design. “I love brands like Joanna Ortiz and Zimmerman for day or destination wedding. And, something more streamlined like Khaite and Alessandra Rich for a city affair,” she notes.

This is also where you can pair flats and more casual heels with your outfit—think chunky heels and heeled sandals.

If you get cold easily (especially in the fall weather), you can even sneak a pair of footless tights or leggings under your maxi dress for extra warmth—only, of course, if there’s no slit in your maxi and it’s floor-length.

To a Casual Fall Wedding

Casual weddings (think beach and outdoor venues) call for outfits that show off your personality within reason. As for fabrics? Grotts recommends anything chiffon, colorful solids, or floral fall prints with matching handbags and strappy sandals or pumps. “Remember, the hemline should not be too short,” she says.

According to Patrickson, casual wedding attire means gorgeous dresses from brands like Carolina K and Reformation, chic separates, and beautiful strappy flats. “Opt for simple strappy gladiator sandals that can elevate your look. I recommend the Style 10 from Amanu where you can also custom sandals to match your outfit perfectly,” she says.

Accessorizing for a Fall Wedding

Arrobio says dressing for a wedding (whatever the season) is all about blending personal signatures with some fun trends. “I hate feeling like I have to sacrifice personal style at weddings,” she said. “Obviously you want to remain classy and respectful, but feel like yourself.” Here are some of the ways Arrobio, whose style is based on vintage inspiration, of-the-moment accents, and elegance, suggests making a personal statement with your fall wedding wear.

If you plan to wear accessories, stick with pieces that show off your personality, like statement earrings or a bracelet that holds special meaning. You can even have fun with your shoe selection which is always a safe way to accessorize at any wedding.

Grotts says to take note that less is always more when it comes to accessories—especially if your dress is a print. For some ideas, Grotts suggests a strand of pearls which is excellent for all occasions and weddings because they are simple and timeless. “A good rule of thumb is to wear a chandelier earring or a necklace, but not both together. They will each stand out on their own,” she says.

The Ultimate Guide to Fall Weddings

Go for the drama with statement-making earrings.

Even the simplest ensemble can be uplifted with conversation-starting earrings. Throw on a pair with a simple shift dress and let your accouterments do all the work.

Opt for glitz and glamour with a metallic bag.

Fall and holiday are all about metallics, aren’t they? A silver or gold dress might be a bit too much if you’re not a daredevil, so Arrobio suggests a bag in a glittering shade.

Toughen up a soft look with a black leather jacket.

We love the balance between soft and tough elements and nothing aids in that mix better than a tried-and-true black leather jacket.

Throw a fur chubby over your shoulders.

With fall comes plummeting temperatures and thus, the need to stay warm. But what do you do when you want your look to get some shine without freezing as a result? That’s where a cute, cropped jacket comes into play. It’s just the thing to keep the autumnal chill at bay while letting your ensemble play center stage.

Cover your shoulders with a capelet.

Chic and delicate, you’ll feel beautiful in a beaded or lacy capelet. Capelets pair nicely with floor-length gowns and add a touch of vintage glamour to any ensemble. Unlike a full-on cape, a cropped and close-fitting capelet can be worn for the duration of the ceremony and reception.

How Not to Dress For a Fall Wedding

Being mindful of the type of venue and the dress code is vital, but making sure that your outfit is season-appropriate is just as important. Stay away from dresses that have no coverage for late fall weddings. If a wedding is outside and you’re wearing a thin dress, you will be uncomfortable and most likely cold the entire time.

You should also choose appropriate clothing and not wear anything too revealing, even if it’s an adult-only wedding. “A wedding isn’t a chance to show off your body. Instead, “remember that a wedding is a sacred ceremony and reflect that in your outfit selection,” Swann previously told Brides.

One last reminder before you start adding selections to your cart: “take into account the location and time of day the wedding is at. And, never wear white to upstage the bride!” Patrickson emphasizes.

Every Wedding Guest Dress Code, Explained

The Dos and Don’ts of Semi-Formal Attire for Women

Keeping track and paying extra close attention to every single dress code of every single invitation that crosses our paths can be exhausting, to say the least. But we have good news. There’s one kind that’s pretty impossible to mess up: semi-formal attire. The “semi” can throw some people off—we get it—but here’s what it essentially means: You need to be polished, so not too casual, and best of all, you have wiggle room.

Even when consulting one of the most trusted (and traditional) sources of etiquette, Emily Post, the rules seemed quite lax. Short dresses, “dressy” separates, and LDBs make Post’s list—essentially leaving us with plenty of room to interpret the dress code without worry about breaking the so-called rules.

Below, we’ve rounded up some of the coolest examples of what semi-formal attire can be. It’s suiting and playful minidresses, but it’s also gowns with T-shirts and collared wrap dresses. The one thing it’s not: too specific. So, find your inspiration ahead, and then mix and match to your own taste for the next RSVP on your agenda.

So you’ve received a wedding invitation that says “semi-formal,” but what exactly does that mean? While semi-formal wedding attire is an extremely popular choice as far as dress codes go, it’s also one of the more ambiguous ones. According to The Knot Real Weddings Study, which surveyed more than 15,200 newlyweds who were married in 2021, 61% of couples opted to have a semi-formal wedding—probably because it’s not too fancy or too casual.

In short, semi-formal, which is sometimes known as “dressy casual,” falls in between cocktail attire and black tie optional. While you won’t need to show up in an evening gown or tuxedo, it’s not the kind of soirée where anything goes, either. Below, we’re outlining exactly what semi-formal wedding guest attire means for men and women, including some of the most common questions about this tricky dress code. We’ve also hand-picked a few looks to inspire your outfit for a semi-formal event if you’re ready to start shopping.

Semi-Formal Wedding Attire FAQs

Is semi-formal wedding attire the same as cocktail?

Semi-formal and cocktail dress codes are relatively similar, but they’re not the same. You can think of semi-formal wedding attire as a slightly toned-down, business-esque version of cocktail attire. These two dress codes overlap in the sense that shorter dress hemlines (think midi-length and high-low skirts) and suits—versus tuxedos—are both appropriate. While cocktail attire is all about eye-catching patterns, colors and statement accessories, semi-formal wedding attire is a little more understated. Solid, darker colors and subtle patterns, such as a classic floral print or stripe, are always safe bets for this dress code.

Can I wear a floor-length dress to a semi-formal wedding?

Traditionally, formal attire, black tie and white tie are the only wedding dress codes that require floor-length gowns. When it comes to semi-formal wedding attire for females, we’d recommend mid-length or knee-length hemlines instead, which are more on-par for this level of formality. If you do wear a floor-length dress, avoid choosing a style with beading or other fancy embellishments, since those indicate a swankier affair (and you run the risk of being overdressed).

What shoes do you wear with semi-formal wedding attire?

Women should wear high heels or pumps—dressy wedges and heeled booties also work. If you’re not a heels person, a nice pair of embellished sandals or classic flats are appropriate. Leather brogues, oxfords, loafers and dress shoes are all good footwear choices for men attending a semi-formal wedding. Avoid sneakers (even if they’re brand new), flip flops or casual boots.

Can you wear jeans to a semi-formal wedding?

Even though semi-formal is interchangeable with “dressy casual,” you shouldn’t take the phrase too literally. In general, we don’t recommend wearing jeans for any type of wedding (even the most casual weddings, unless the couple explicitly allows denim), and especially not for a semi-formal dress code. Opt for dress pants or khakis instead, paired with a blazer or suit jacket and tie.

Semi-Formal Wedding Attire for Women

When you’re shopping for this dress code, you can skip the evening gown and wear a cocktail dress instead. Dressy jumpsuits, rompers and separates are also appropriate semi-formal wedding attire options. Finally, use accessories to your advantage: matching jewelry can elevate something on the casual side, while block heel sandals (versus rhinestone-covered stilettos) can tone down a fancier ensemble. Here are some shoppable outfit ideas we love when it comes to semi-formal wedding attire for female guests.

Five main rules of a business dress code for women – Style Guide

August 15, 2019 / 13:58

The dress code is not just a recommendation for choosing clothes, it is a set of rules

A dress code is not just a recommendation for choosing clothes, it is a set of rules, an important part of business etiquette, the failure to comply with which can cost you a career or a profitable partnership.

A business dress code covers various situations that a businesswoman may find herself in. She does not face the eternal female question of what to wear. And the choice of style and color of clothing does not depend on the mood – it is fixed by the norms of business etiquette. Knowing these rules will allow you to feel confident in any situation, formal or informal.

1. Dress for a gala event must match the format of the event

There are two systems of rules for important events – formal dress code and semi-formal.

Formal dress code is considered the most strict. Suitable for events such as balls, international award ceremonies, diplomatic and other official receptions.

The time at which the event is scheduled determines which of the varieties of formal dress code is suitable – Morning Dress or White Tie.

Morninig Dress signifies attendance at a daytime event and suggests the lady is wearing a ball gown. White Tie is the dress code for a particularly formal evening reception. For a woman, this means:

  • Evening dress at least ankle length,
  • open shoulders are covered with a tippet,
  • high gloves,
  • elegant high heels,
  • ball hairstyle,
  • discreet makeup,
  • jewelry only.

A semi-formal dress code is less restrictive than a formal one. However, the requirements here are quite strict. According to the rules of a semi-formal dress code, they dress for participation in charity and other important events, for a gala dinner in a restaurant or a premiere in the theater.

Stroller is a daytime version of the semi-formal dress code. You are expected to wear a cocktail dress.

Black Tie – for an evening out:

  • Floor-length dress, but less formal than White Tie;
  • acceptable neckline, open shoulders, slits;
  • the color of the dress is calm, non-provocative.

You do not have to rack your brains about what dress code the event requires, where you are going. For formal and semi-formal dress code celebrations, you will receive an official invitation that specifies the dress code. This is also part of the etiquette.

2. Social life also requires compliance with the dress code

Cocktail dress code dictates the choice of clothing for events that take place until 20:00. As a rule, these are vernissages, premieres, presentations, secular events.

The cocktail dress was created especially for this occasion. You can wear a small dress, but remember the rule of secular ladies: we expose either the top or the bottom. In no case should a mini dress be with a deep neckline or bare shoulders.

An elegant trouser suit would be appropriate – designers today offer many options for elegant ensembles. Choose shoes with high heels. When choosing jewelry, give preference to medium-sized, discreet accessories.

3. Clothing for negotiations and other work activities should not distract from the solution of business issues

The dress code for women who participate in business negotiations, hold meetings with partners, provides for a business suit with trousers, a skirt or a dress.

Conservatism, rigor, elegance – three pillars of a business woman’s suit. In no case should there be sports elements in your clothes, even if you run marathons after work. Let this be reflected in your proud posture and toned figure, but not in your clothes for work.

The gold standard business dress code, or Business best, includes the following rules:

  1. Neutral clothing colors – gray, black, blue.
  2. Skirts and dresses are midi only.
  3. Choose a closed blouse, made of non-translucent materials.
  4. Definitely long sleeve. Even in summer. Even at +35 °C.
  5. In the same way, even in the hot season, you must wear flesh-colored tights.
  6. Shoes matching the color of the suit, with a stable, but not massive, heel, no sandals, open heels or toes. Classics of a business suit – pumps.
  7. No sparkling jewels. Of the admissible jewelry – non-massive watches, modest earrings and rings.
  8. Neat haircut and styling, perfectly clean hair.
  9. For a manicure, natural shades or dark varnish to match the clothes are best. Bright colors are inappropriate.

4. If your company has a corporate dress code, you must follow it

The strictness of the rules for choosing clothes in this case depends on the company that sets the office dress code. In conservative business – finance, law – the requirements are quite strict and coincide with the Business Best standard.

In some corporations, employees are required to include corporate identity elements in their daily attire: neckerchiefs, logo badges, badges.
A number of companies offer relaxations in office dress code on certain days of the week – most often on Friday.

5. Creative professions dictate their style

Business women of creative professions can afford to dress in business casual (business casual) and smart casual (smart casual) styles.

What business casual allows:

  • Above knee skirts,
  • bright colors of clothes,
  • cardigans instead of jackets,
  • flat shoes, but not sports shoes.

Smart casual is an even more informal dress code. This is a combination of classic business style and fashion trends.

For example, in 2019, trousers can be cropped or tapered. Even jeans are acceptable, but with a classic cut and even color, without holes and scuffs. You can afford a short sleeve in summer, and a stylish jumper in cool weather.

General requirement: clothing should be comfortable and comfortable, but at the same time elegant.

After five dress code for women

If you have received an invitation card to an event, you should pay attention to whether it has a dress code mark. If there is one, then you need to dress in accordance with the requirements in order to look appropriate and in tune with the event. There are several styles of clothing, some of which are suitable for celebrations, others – exclusively for business meetings. Let’s take a closer look at the After five clothing style – a dress code that usually involves a loose evening outfit for cocktail parties.

Features

First, let’s figure out what the After five dress code is? This is a dress code for certain events that take place after 5 pm, that is, after the end of the working day. We are talking about semi-formal “events”, where there is no place for excessive luxury, but the clothes should be elegant and beautiful.

If the event should take place after five in the evening (after five), the dress code will be synonymous with semi-formal, that is, a semi-formal version of clothing. In order for a woman to dress appropriately for any event that takes place at this time of day, according to stylists, you can simply take a thing from the office style and add a touch of “pretentiousness” to it. There is a wide choice – from a stylish silk suit to a short cocktail dress. It all depends on the type of figure and the style that the young lady is used to. Men in this case are not required to wear formal suits, but can replace them with more fashionable dark-colored suits without a tie.

Basic principles

The After five dress code for women and girls has several basic principles that apply to everyone without exception – regardless of age and position in society. Firstly, simplicity and elegance are welcomed, and not a complex multi-layered “structure”. Secondly, a woman should look attractive, but in no case vulgar. Therefore, here you need to monitor the length of the skirt or dress so that it is not too short.

Variations for events A5

Let’s list the possible options for women’s attire, to which the dress code A5 (After five) is positively “applied”:

  • fashionable evening suit from a famous designer;
  • little black dress;
  • knee-length semi-formal dress;
  • black or silver pencil skirt with pretty top;
  • hip-flared trousers and sparkling blouse;
  • metal accessories;
  • evening jewelry;
  • shoes with heels.

Youth style

An original suit, stylish skirts, blouses, trousers – all this fits into the After five casual clothing type – a dress code that is among the most common among young people. Its highlight is that it “maneuvering” between office style and solemn. This option is especially to the liking of students, young professionals who love parties and freedom. The latter applies to clothing as well: it should not hinder movement, as, for example, long puffy dresses at a ball do. In addition, something new or trendy is welcome at cocktail parties or dinner parties. And fashion and youth, one might say, are traveling in the same carriage. At the same time, do not forget to wear trendy leggings and a tunic. This refers to a fashionable dress or suit of a recognizable brand. The word casual does not mean that you can dress up in the usual jeans with holes and a worn top. Clothing must be dressy, not casual.

Three bright evening looks

Cocktail after five dress code speaks for itself – we are talking about a cocktail party. This is a type of event for which you need to be able to choose the right outfit to meet several requirements, namely: to look fashionable, dignified, appropriate and at the same time not defiant. Based on this, we choose the right elements of the wardrobe to create a harmonious image. Consider the three most striking, capable of attracting attention, bows.

Little black dress

The first option is the already classic little black dress with sparkling accessories. If the wardrobe (most likely) already has a similar dress, then all that remains is to buy a few silver or gold accessories or a clutch with rhinestones, and add it to your outfit.

And if there is still no black dress in the closet, you should pay attention to the material from which the item is made before buying. To be self-confident, it is better to choose a natural and high-quality fabric, such as velvet, satin or chiffon. If the dress code is Cocktail formal after five, then the length of the dress should not be above the knee. You should also pay attention to the neckline: the shorter the dress, the more modest the neckline, and the longer the sleeves. As for shoes, black or metallic heels will be a win-win option. A sparkling hairpin in her hair and a bracelet on her arm will complement the overall picture. Do not forget that busting with accessories will lead to a glut of the image. You can take a neat black, metallic or other rich bright shade (blue, emerald, etc.) with you.

Shiny top with black trousers or skirt

Cocktail after five dress code obliges ladies to look not luxurious, but fashionable and attractive, which means elegant. Therefore, adding a brilliant to the image does not hurt anyone. Replace your usual office jacket or boring blouse with a sparkling top and pair it with your favorite trousers or skirt. At the same time, girls should follow the following tips from stylists:

  • The starting point of this bow is a sparkling top. To look chic, you should choose something with a beautiful neckline or a color that suits your type perfectly.
  • If skirts are not suitable for a young lady, then it is better to opt for flared or straight black satin trousers.
  • A black pencil or chiffon skirt will also look great.
  • To match your clothes and dress code A5 (After five), choose only one tight-fitting wardrobe item. If this is a top, then let the trousers be loose or the skirt not tight. And if you have a habit of wearing tight pants, then you should choose a top with a more flying cut.
  • Since all the attention of the public will be riveted on a shiny top, then you need to be careful with additions: just one necklace, a satin clutch and cute heels are enough.

Color dress with simple accessories

While black is a great choice for an A5 dress code, it is not a panacea for everyone. It is possible to demonstrate your own style and attractive appearance to everyone with a cocktail dress in your favorite bright tone. However, you should choose exactly the color that clearly suits the appearance, and not trendy shades. That is, initially you need to decide on the most “favorable” tone, and then try on the dress.

The material of the chosen item should not be too shiny, as the color is already bright enough. But you should pay special attention to the silhouette – it must correspond to the type of figure in order to emphasize the advantages and hide the flaws. One or two jewelry, a small clutch and a pair of cute shoes or sandals with heels are suitable for a bright outfit. You should not match shoes to match the dress, as there is a risk of looking like a bridesmaid.

Clothes for women of Balzac age

Leafing through fashion magazines, we can see that After five is a dress code, the photo of which is mainly dedicated to youth fashion. However, there are plenty of clothing options for women at a more respectable age. After all, not only young people are invited to evening events, often enough adults meet at cocktail parties. The most important thing is not to overdo it with dark tones, so as not to add age visually. It is better for women of mature age to pay attention to rich plum shades, burgundy, blue. Delicate pastel colors are no exception, as they rejuvenate and give freshness. However, it is worth carefully approaching the image if a woman opted for pink or orange colors. According to fashion designers, there are now such shades of pink that in no way spoil the bow and do not turn a woman into a Barbie doll. For example, lavender, salmon, purple, French pink, etc.

What can a woman over 50 wear to an A5 event? She can afford a knee-length or slightly below-the-knee dress with a modest neckline, a small amount of expensive but elegant jewelry, and high-heeled shoes. Or as an option – a beautiful plain suit of a jacket and skirt.

Unacceptable “tricks”

Everyone knows that After five is a dress code that is not very strict and has various “connivances”. However, it does have some limitations. It is unacceptable to dress for events after 17 too loosely. In other words, a guest or guest will look out of place in frayed, ripped jeans, a casual T-shirt, tracksuit, and sneakers. The prohibitions also include clothing for travel, riding, hunting, carnival costumes – all this is completely for other purposes. As for the latter, masquerade balls are specially held on specific holidays, where carnival attire is welcomed.

Since After five is a simple dress code, it doesn’t require you to wear overly luxurious outfits with fur capes and frilly jewelery to evening events. In this form, it is better to go not to a party, but rather to a wedding celebration.

Another not entirely appropriate choice is a very strict business suit. These clothes are more suitable for business meetings with clients, partners, speeches at conferences.

Party Outfits from Popular Brands

As mentioned above, at any event you can attract everyone’s attention by wearing clothes from famous fashion designers. Many fashion houses love to make party clothes, as they are very popular with young ladies.

What should a girl or woman choose from fashion offers if she needs to choose her own dress code A5 (After five)? So, a win-win option would be a cocktail dress from the Giovani fashion house, Sherry Hill, which produce high-quality and beautiful collections. Quite bold evening dresses are offered by the Terani Couture brand, whose dresses are distinguished by frank cuts, deep necklines and open backs.

No less famous brand is Dolce Gabbana, which annually pleases the fair sex with its new products. Here you can choose a dress made of lace or guipure. And for those who do not like translucent outfits, the company offers a dress with a floral print or interesting applications. In the collections from Valentino (a famous Italian fashion house), you can also find many suitable options. These are organza dresses with lace and prints. There are both pastel shades and bright juicy colors.

Many world-famous stars do not pass by evening dresses from the designer Elie Saab. What is the secret of his success? His images are feminine, graceful, with a certain amount of mystery. This fashion designer, in addition to elegant dresses, also creates outfits for everyday life.

No less beautiful are the clothes created by the Spanish brand Rosa Clara. Its difference is that the dresses have a clear silhouette, without any frills, with exquisite trimmings. Material of exceptionally high quality.

for women, for men, black tie optional, invited what does it mean

Dress code is a special dress code approved by the event organizer. For the Black Tie dress code, the outfit is chosen taking into account certain restrictions and limits. Let’s try to understand the intricacies of Black Tie, varieties, as well as the features of making a formal set of clothes.

Black Tie dress code – what it is

Black Tie dress code was first announced in the first half of the 20th century with one goal – to dilute the strict, uncompromising White Tie. The purpose of the style remains the same – attending events after 19-00, however, the requirements are more loyal. The most democratic and unpretentious cocktail dress code, but in Black Tie it is easy to make mistakes if you are not prepared. The traditional male look is a tuxedo, a black vest is allowed, a black, elegant bow tie.

Good to know! The Black Tie dress code is celebrated in different ways: Semi-formal means semi-formal, they also use the BT marking, Tuxedo is written much less often.

In simpler and more understandable terms, Black Tie style is appropriate for wedding ceremonies, gala receptions, theater premieres, informal social parties that start after 19-00.

The Black Tie dress code imposes rather strict rules in the choice of clothes, men and women are obliged to adhere to them.

Basic requirements for a male look:

  1. jacket (alternative – tuxedo), give preference to models with satin lapels, the color is black or deep blue;
  2. similar fabric trousers;
  3. shirt – the classic color is white, but if there are no strict requirements, you can choose a different shade;
  4. a strict, black butterfly, it must be tied by the man himself;
  5. dress shoes – traditional leather oxfords or derbies (no patent leather shoes).

Tip! It is not recommended to wear a belt, it is better to choose a sash in the same color scheme as trousers.

Regarding women’s wardrobe, these are traditional maxi dresses, but if the degree of solemnity allows, the dress or skirt can be chosen shorter, the length above the knee is prohibited. Jewelry is mandatory, however, unlike the uncompromising White Tie, which recognizes only expensive jewelry, you can complement the look with premium jewelry.

Furs should not be shown. Your image should be refined, noble. It will harmoniously complement his shoes of a simple design with heels. And, of course, accessories, the best choice is a small clutch made of velvet, satin, decorated with beads, pearls.

As you can see, in contrast to the monochrome dress code Total Black, Black Tie is more democratic and allows some splashes of color.

Classification of Black Tie styles

Dress code like Black Tie, of course, has certain limits, restrictions, but it does not allow monotony and boredom. Considering the topic of Black Tie, it is appropriate to consider its varieties. It turns out that this is a multifaceted and incredibly exciting dress code.

Dress Code Black Tie Invited or Formal Black Tie

The dress code most closely resembles the classic Black Tie. For men, stylists recommend wearing a dark tuxedo (if possible, it is replaced with a formal suit), complemented with a black tie and classic matte shoes. But women are more fortunate – they can replace the dress with a suit or even combine the lower and upper parts of the image.

The dress code is relevant for a gala dinner, family celebrations with an impressive list of guests.

Black Tie Optional Black Tie Optional what it is

“Optional” means that the invited guests have the right to choose whether to choose the look specified in the invitation or choose their own outfit. This does not mean that you can wear any clothes. Remember – the chosen image should harmoniously fit into the theme of the event.

When a woman is accompanied by a man in a tuxedo, a maxi dress is appropriate. If a woman plans to attend the event alone, a cocktail dress or suit is enough, it is allowed to combine individual parts of the outfit. Men can also relax a little and show their taste and a little imagination – instead of a tuxedo, choose a suit in dark colors, always with a classic shirt and a long tie. Shoes are classic, preferably black.

Creative Black Tie

Black Tie – the style is quite strict, it requires compliance with certain rules, but this statement is relevant only for the first two types of Black Tie. Black Tie Creative invites you to create a look that is less formal, more vibrant, but not provocative.

Important! The cherished word Creative means that experiments are allowed with shades , accessories.

It is not recommended to deviate from the basic requirements – the male image involves a tuxedo or suit, and for a woman an evening or cocktail dress is relevant. What then is possible? For example, choose a men’s suit made of velvet, a dark-colored shirt, and a patterned tie. Stylists note that men’s tuxedos and velvet jackets look original. A woman can also experiment, for example, choose a satin skirt, a soft cashmere blouse.

Dress code for women photo

Rules for women

The White Tie dress code does not tolerate free interpretation, you should adhere to strict rules, up to the shape, hair height, and Black Tie for women allows some liberties. Let’s start with small recommendations:

  • the design of the dress is discreet, concise, no shocking, maxi length, midi is acceptable;
  • elegant heeled shoes, as simple as possible, in the same color scheme as the outfit;
  • the image is complemented by jewelry, but of high quality, expensive;
  • wear hats or gloves;
  • it is important to harmoniously combine colors, the best choice is rich blue, emerald, lilac or purple, silver.

What color to choose a dress

There are no strict rules in matters of color, you have the right to choose the shade of the dress in accordance with your personal preferences, mood, character. Stylists recommend choosing outfits in discreet shades, but if your soul asks for brightness, feel free to wear red, yellow, blue, lilac or purple outfit.

How long should the dress be?

It is absolutely not necessary to choose a floor-length dress for a formal event, a cocktail dress of medium length, but not above the knee, will do. The main condition for choosing a dress is that it should be elegant.

Tip! Choose an outfit of a classic style, give up original ideas, a complex cut. Choose an outfit with soft drapery, open shoulders, an accentuated waistline, a push up outfit looks great.

If your choice is a cocktail dress, pay attention to a simple cut, the best choice is a sheath dress and, of course, complement it with jewelry. This image is a symbol of elegance and solemn restraint.

If you are going to play the role of a bridesmaid, it is quite appropriate to choose a dress with a fluffy skirt, the main thing is not to outshine the bride.

Accessories

The Black Tie dress code obliges a woman to pay attention to accessories. Pick up a small handbag, a clutch is better. Real fashionistas buy such an accessory for one evening, for a special outfit and for a special event. By the way, you can rent not only an outfit, but also a complete set of accessories for it.

Tip! The material for a handbag or clutch can be different – metal, velvet, satin, satin.

Diamonds do not have to sparkle in the neck and in the ears, it is enough to choose a worthy jewelry.

Shoes

The Black Tie dress code is quite strict with regard to women’s shoes and does not allow any free interpretations – only an exquisite model with heels. At the same time, there are no strict wishes directly to the heel – it can be a medium, stable heel if you plan to dance, or an exquisite stiletto heel if you want to create a sophisticated look.

Black Tie style for men photo

Rules for men

Dress code Black Tie for men is quite democratic, it is not necessary to stick to black and white, of course, if this requirement is not written in the invitation. The main thing for a man is to learn how to express himself with the help of clothes, to create a discreet, elegant image that attracts women’s views.

Tuxedo

The main element of the Black Tie dress code. Of course, you don’t have to buy a tuxedo, you can rent it. The traditional color scheme is black, however, in artificial light, a rich blue color looks more advantageous. Lapels should be strict, concise, silk.

Tip! If you choose a single-breasted model with one button, be sure to pick up a vest or a wide belt to match the trousers. Wearing vest together with double-breasted m jacket wrong .

Trousers are chosen from a fabric similar to a jacket, silk lapels should pass along the seam. Instead of a wide belt, you can choose silk suspenders.

For an event in the summer, you can limit yourself to trousers, a light shirt, a belt. It is impossible to combine a belt and a vest in one image. If the cummerband (belt) does not support the pants enough, suspenders are used.

Shirt

Be especially careful when choosing a shirt, it should be sewn from expensive, high-quality fabrics – silk, cambric or linen. A wing collar is most appropriate, and holes for cufflinks will be required on the cuffs.

Accessories

Men’s look, created in accordance with the requirements of Black Tie, requires the presence of various accessories – a handkerchief in the pocket of a jacket or tuxedo, cufflinks must be made of expensive materials, suspenders or a wide belt. Only in this case the image will be solid and correct from a stylistic point of view.

Bow tie

The black bow tie tops the list of accessories. The tie must be tied by the man himself. Real aristocrats and gentlemen say that as long as a man does not know how to tie a bow tie on his own, he does not need to put it on.

Cufflinks

Cufflinks are another basic element of the traditional Black Tie dress code. The accessory is selected only from expensive, noble metals. In addition, you can choose cufflinks made of semi-precious stones, preferably black, pearls also look harmonious.

Pocket handkerchief

Stylists note that without a handkerchief in the upper pocket, a man’s look will be incomplete. The best choice is silk or linen. If you adhere to the classic style of clothing, choose a white scarf, for a more informal look, an accessory in red or burgundy is suitable.

Watches

Watches should be expensive, but with a discreet design. Of course, you should not choose a watch with too bright colors and too modern, original design.

Boutonniere

This accessory is more suitable for a wedding. Previously, a boutonniere could only be black or red, and always a carnation. Today, the Black Tie dress code is more loyal and the organizer specifies the choice of flower and its color in the invitation or leaves the choice of the guest.

Scarf

Of course, this is not a warm woolen scarf, but a thin silk accessory. The scarf is thrown over the shoulders and not tied. It is preferable to choose a white accessory.

Shoes

The best choice is classic leather shoes, always matt, black. Lacquered surface is not welcome. As for the model, derbies, oxfords are ideal, another option is slippers. The current fashion trend is silk laces.

As you can see, the term Black Tie is quite simple. It is enough for men to buy a tuxedo, an expensive shirt, a classic pair of shoes, and accessories. It is easier and more difficult for women at the same time – on the one hand, the choice of dresses is huge and you can show your imagination, but on the other hand, this choice can be confusing. The dress code of Black Tie is less formal than White Tie, deviation from strict canons is acceptable.

Types and rules of the dress code. A detailed description of the types of dress codes, practical advice on their observance

Fashion blog

A short note “dress code” on the invitation causes awe and horror in most girls. Not only do you need to think over your image, it would also be nice not to miss with this very dress code. In fact, everything is much simpler than it seems. There are rules for each prescribed form of dress, knowing which, you will not get into trouble. There are a great many classifications of types of dress code, but if you do not find fault with the little things, then you can select several of the most common types.

White tie (or Ultra-formal)

The most strict dress code, which is extremely rare these days. This “endangered look” is matched by royal receptions, ceremonial awards (although even the “Oscar” reaches only Black tie), balls and very large evening weddings.

Many of the rules of white tie have not changed since its inception in the middle of the 19th century. For example, men are required to wear a ribbon with all the battle regalia, which today, you see, is not very common.

So, the basic rules of the White tie dress code:

– Girls must come to the event in a dress no longer than the ankle;

– If the outfit is complemented by a neckline, it should be covered with a shawl or tippet. Bare shoulders are also unacceptable;

– Under the dress (even though no one will see it) you need to wear stockings, not pantyhose;

– For White tie events, it is mandatory to wear white gloves above the elbow. They cannot be removed until the moment when you are at the table. After finishing the meal, you should put them on again;

– Under no circumstances should jewelry be worn at such events. Only precious jewelry is allowed. And White tie is that rare case when a girl can put on a diadem and not look stupid at the same time. The diadem, of course, must also be real. But hours are considered inappropriate;

– Of course, everything you need should fit in a small bag – no oversized clutches and, especially, bags;

– Hair must not be worn in loose waves over the shoulders – it must be gathered into a face-revealing hairstyle. Make-up should be neat, discreet, but intense enough.

Black Tie

The second strictest type of dress code – Black Tie – is most common at ceremonial events today. In accordance with secular norms, this form of clothing can be assigned to events starting after six in the evening: weddings, gala dinners, theater premieres, New Year’s parties, etc.

The main rules of Black Tie include the following:

– A long dress would be ideal for such events. The presence or absence of a neckline is at your discretion;

– It is advisable to avoid too bright colors and aggressive prints. Leopard fabric clearly has no place at this level of events;

– The only shoes allowed are closed heeled shoes. Although in our time this rule is increasingly violated, especially in the summer;

– In some cases, it is acceptable if a girl appears at a Black Tie event in a cocktail dress, but certainly below the knees;

– It is not necessary to decorate yourself with diamonds – high-quality jewelry will be quite enough;

– Complete your Black Tie look with a small clutch in silk, suede or jacquard.

Cocktail

Cocktail events begin in the afternoon and end around eight o’clock in the evening – these can be presentations, corporate parties, exhibitions, openings, premieres. They are not as solemn as White tie or Black Tie events. But still, we must not forget the basic rules:

– Especially in order to make our task easier, the designers came up with cocktail dresses – they can be of any color, plain or with prints, with or without sleeves. Length varies from mid-calf to 10 cm above the knee;

– In addition to the dress, costumes will be appropriate at a cocktail party – both with trousers and with a skirt;

– There is also more freedom in the choice of shoes – open sandals are acceptable. But still, it is better not to refuse heels;

– Stunning jewelery is best saved for the evening. Cocktail dress code implies either modest jewelry with natural stones, or high-quality jewelry that matches the outfit;

– Sometimes cocktail events require a headdress. However, this point will certainly be indicated in the invitation.

Semi-formal

A semi-formal dress code is suitable for both the office and a less formal evening event. There are no strict rules here, the appearance only has to match the theme and level of the event.

– Girls can wear a cocktail or day dress, trousers or a skirt with a blouse to the Semi-formal event;

– Mini lengths or floor-length dresses should be avoided, otherwise you risk looking a little overdressed;

– Plunging necklines and high slits will also look out of place. At Semi-formal events, you must dress in such a way that your appearance can be described as “elegant and discreet”;

– In the afternoon, you can finally descend from heaven to earth – in addition to shoes and sandals with heels, ballet flats and other neat flat shoes will be appropriate.

Business Best and Business Traditional

What is the Business Best and Business Traditional dress code? These are types of business dress code that are regulated no less strictly than Black tie. They are appointed for important working meetings, business presentations, conferences, negotiations.

Key points to remember when going to a meeting like this:

– For a business dress code, girls can choose between a gray, beige and navy blue suit or a sheath dress combined with a jacket;

– The skirt or trousers must be in the same set as the jacket. Combining different costumes is unacceptable;

– Under the jacket there must be a simple plain blouse or shirt;

– Be sure to wear tights to important business meetings;

– Shoes must be closed, as discreet as possible. Heel height – no more than 5 cm;

– Only small earrings, rings and watches are allowed;

– Hair must be collected.

A5 (or After Five)

If you see a strange code A5 on the invitation, don’t be alarmed – this is just a dress code for events starting after five in the evening. In this case, you can afford the greatest freedom: dresses, trousers, skirts, smart tops or blouses. Shoes can be almost any, with the exception, perhaps, sneakers. A5 implies freedom in choosing accessories and decorations.

Casual

Loose casual is how we look every day. It does not imply any specific rules and a list of taboos. Business casual, a more businesslike style of clothing, and Smart casual, more elegant, in which it is better to refuse, for example, jeans, stand out.

dress code. What to wear to match

The dress code for events, indicated in the invitation or on the organizer’s website, drives many into a stupor. The eternal female question “What to wear” begins to excite even the male brain. Of course, some come to listen to the opera in jeans, and put on an elegant dress for a business meeting and feel quite comfortable at the same time. They don’t care about the opinions of others. Free morals, the absence of complexes and stereotypes of behavior are frequent justifications for such actions. To avoid embarrassment for guests, some organizers specifically do not prescribe a dress code or indicate it with reservations, softening the rules. Nevertheless, we will deal with the intricacies of the dress code, if, suddenly, you have to receive an invitation issued in accordance with all the rules of business etiquette. What to wear if Black Tie, White Tie or the abbreviation A5C is indicated?

For convenience, dress codes can be divided into 3 main groups:

Formal – for formal occasions

Business – for business events

Cocktail – for informal evening events

FORMAL

Black Tie
Black Tie is the most common dress code. Maybe that’s why it’s pretty easy to follow. This is a style for gala receptions, charity evenings or theater premieres.

For men, it always means a tuxedo and a black bow tie with right angles. The nuance is that the butterfly should be tied, and not attached to the shirt like a badge or worn with an elastic band. The shoes, of course, are also black, of a classic model, but not lacquered.

Women should wear a long evening dress, high-heeled shoes and jewelry. Instead of original jewelry, it is allowed to use high-quality copies or expensive jewelry.

White Tie
White Tie is the most strict, but not so frequent dress code. Unless you are a regular at dinner parties with the Queen of England, receptions at the embassy or government awards ceremonies at the Kremlin Palace. Although even there they are sometimes limited to less demanding Black Tie.

To comply with the stated regulations, men wear a black tailcoat. Under it, they put on a white vest with three buttons. An obligatory accessory, which gave the name to the dress code, is a white butterfly. A white handkerchief, white gloves and a pocket watch will not be superfluous. However, if you can’t give up your Rolex or Apple Watch, chances are you’ll be forgiven.

It is important for women to choose an evening dress to the floor and not to forget long gloves. A fur cape on the shoulders and a small clutch in the hands would be appropriate. As for jewelry, you can’t do without them. Moreover, the stones must be only real. It’s better to rent than to show up in a fake. Appearing without makeup and with loose hair is bad manners.

Formal

If you saw in the invitation an indication of the Formal dress code (Full Formal, Full Dress, Formal Attire), then be prepared for the severity of the outfit. Typically, such a dress code is used for dinner parties, gala meetings with foreigners or corporate events.

Men should wear a light-colored tailcoat, tuxedo or suit with a light-colored waistcoat. A dark formal suit would also be appropriate. Don’t forget to choose the right tie.

Women should prepare evening dresses and high-heeled shoes. Sandals are strictly excluded.

Black Tie Invited
Not very strict dress code, including black tie elements. It can be a dinner party in a restaurant, a corporate banquet, a family celebration with a large number of guests.

Gentlemen are required to wear a tuxedo and thin-soled shoes, while women may opt for a cocktail dress, long evening dress, or smart suit.

Creative Black Tie
Dress code Creative Black Tie – for creative and informal events. It gives more freedom in outfits.

Men can wear a tuxedo with non-traditional accessories, such as a bright vest or an unusual bow tie, such as wood, and forego the tie. Women have the right to choose a long or short dress. Fans and fashion accessories are welcome.

Business

BB (Business Best)
Probably the most popular dress code in business attire. This dress code implies that clothes should be strict, stylish, neat, but at the same time show your status and prestige. This dress code is used at important official receptions, business meetings.

Men should opt for a dark suit with a white shirt and black patent leather shoes. The outfit will complement the tie, usually red, pocket square and cufflinks.

Women can wear a light-colored suit, stockings and shoes with heels no more than 5 cm.

BTR (Business Traditional, Business Formal Traditional, Undress)
This is a very traditional formal business dress code, so you don’t have to think too much. It is often used for business meetings, internal negotiations. Also appropriate to go for an interview.

Men wear a one-color suit or a lightly striped suit, while women wear a sheath dress with a jacket or a fitted trouser suit. From shoes – classic shoes.

cocktail

An event with a Cocktail or Cocktail Attire dress code is less strict than White Tie and even Black Tie, but there are still a number of rules.

Men can replace a tuxedo with a classic dark suit. Complete the set with a tie or a bright bow tie. Remember, if you have chosen a single-breasted suit with more than two buttons, then the bottom one should always be left unbuttoned.

For women, the most suitable option is a cocktail dress and high-heeled shoes. You can complement the outfit with a small handbag.

Semi-formal
Semi-formal dress code of the Cocktail family. It can be installed to attend corporate banquets, dinner parties or family celebrations with a large number of invited guests.

For events after 18:00, men should wear a dark suit, and before 18:00, a regular suit with a tie will do. For women, before 18:00 it is better to wear a non-long cocktail dress, and after that it is acceptable to wear an elegant dress or elegant suit.

Cocktail Attire (Cocktail)
The most common cocktail dress code. Although it is often used for the same events as Semi-formal. It all depends on the wishes of the organizers to set the right tone for the event.

Men prefer a dark suit and dress shoes. For women, a cocktail dress and high-heeled shoes.

A5 (After Five)
This dress code is chosen by the organizers of any evening event starting after 17:00. The designation can be supplemented by others, for example, A5 Semi formal. But unless otherwise indicated, A5 stands for “Cocktail”.

Men can safely choose shirts of any colors and styles. Whether or not to wear a tie is up to you. It is quite appropriate to do without it. A suit is not required for this dress code. You may well come in jeans or trousers made of high-quality knitwear, and put on a club jacket over it. Women can choose from their wardrobe a cocktail dress, an evening dress embroidered with sequins or a smart suit.

A5С (After 5 Casual, Dressy Casual)

A5c is an even looser dress code than A5. It implies a relaxed evening style.

Therefore, men can come in an ordinary business suit with a smart shirt without a tie. Suitable designer or clothes of famous brands. You can wear classic shoes or moccasins on your feet.

For women, a suit or elegant dress is suitable. Jeans, trousers with blouses, open tops, sweaters, tunics are allowed.

Regardless of a specific dress code, there are a number of general rules for attending events that should be followed:

If the invitation does not indicate the number of persons, then it should be considered that it is intended for one person and it is better to come to the event alone. If you want to go with a companion, then check this possibility with the organizers or get a second invitation. It will be embarrassing if you have to decide on the possibility of getting two people on one invitation at the entrance.

The question of the strictness of compliance with the prescribed dress code, everyone decides for himself. It is unlikely that at the entrance you will be inspected by face control and require strict adherence to all the details of the outfit. unless it’s a costume party or a very conceptual event. But being in the role of a white crow among the “disciplined” guests is also not the best prospect.

If the invitation does not say anything about the dress code, but it is about a reception, presentation or gala dinner, then men can wear a dark, but not black suit, and women can wear an evening dress. These are win-win options.

In any case, do not refuse to attend the event just because you do not have an outfit that matches the specified dress code. Any event is an opportunity to meet new people and expand your network of useful contacts. Don’t deprive yourself of networking opportunities!
