Oprah’s Hawaiian Home

Once an ordinary little gray ranch that Oprah considered tearing down is now transformed into the perfect 21st-century farmhouse.

Oprah’s Hawaiian adventure began a couple of years ago when her personal
trainer turned property manager, Bob Greene, planted the idea that she might buy
land on one of the islands. Besotted with the weather, the mountains, and the
ocean, Bob had been visiting a certain part of Hawaii for 15 years, looking for
“the perfect spot.”

He found it in a remote up-country region, where the houses that dot the moss-covered rock hillside face the ocean. Bob then convinced Oprah to look at a nearby property for sale. “He was worried that some developer might swoop up the land and build condos,” Oprah says.

Instead, she bought the land—and has no plan to build any condos.

Oprah called Ellie,
her Hawaiian decorator, after seeing a photograph of Ellie’s Connecticut home on
the cover of a magazine; she was attracted to its informal American country
style. When the phone rang and Ellie heard Oprah on the other end of the line,
Ellie says, “I jumped out of the bathtub, grabbed my cell phone, and ran out on
the driveway for better reception—wrapped in only a towel. Oprah said, ‘I want
you to do my house in Hawaii.’ I thought we should meet first.”

Ellie and Oprah flew to Hawaii a few months later. “I saw a small porch, a
kitchen that needed work, a master bedroom that did not face the view and had a
low ceiling, and no connection between inside and outside,” Ellie says. “The
original plan was to do a quick job on the house then think about building the
ultimate Hawaii homestead.”

What started as a small renovation soon turned into a major project. Architectural designer Jeff Wooley, of John B. Murray Architect, rejiggered the quirky floor plan to create less-angular rooms and then, with the help of T.M.C. General Contracting Inc. and a team of craftsmen, stripped the house to its basic structure, moved the staircase, raised the ceiling of the master bedroom, installed French doors throughout, and wrapped the whole with a wonderfully wide veranda—a great place to sit and soak up the sweeping view.

The generous wraparound porch
looks as if it’s been part of the house forever. The outdoor furniture from
Weatherend matches the railing’s simple lines.

Figuring out how to furnish the rooms was not easy. At first, Ellie and
her team researched Hawaiian fabrics and antiques, thinking that the rooms
should reflect the locale. But that wasn’t what Oprah had in mind. “They came
with pineapple doodads and big flower things. They had everything but a hula
skirt,” she recalls. “I said, ‘Whoa! If I want to see Hawaii, I’ll just walk out
my door.'”

The interior decorator went back to her drawing board, and by the next time they all met, Oprah knew Ellie was on the right track—especially when Ellie, a former folk-art curator, suggested they go shopping for the kind of extraordinary antiques that are part of the American heritage.

The horses on the hills surrounding the ranch provided Oprah and Ellie with a strong theme for the living room. On one of their shopping trips, a late-19th-century American weather vane in the shape of a galloping horse caught Oprah’s eye, and Ellie made it the centerpiece of the room. The designer also transformed a reproduction tea canister into a lamp and placed it on a side table near one of the sofas, which were upholstered in a Boussac chenille. The curtains, elaborately embroidered in India, were also made just for this room.

From her bedroom, Oprah can step directly onto the terrace. The high
ceiling creates an open and airy space, and a flower motif, designed by Ellie,
was stenciled between the beams to continue the folk-art feel. A custom chair,
sofa, and ottoman—which doubles as a table—allow the room to be used as a
comfortable sitting room.

Photo by Michel Arnaud, styling by Carlos Mota

Oprah can pull up a chair and watch the clouds roll by from the veranda of
the master bedroom. The sheer panels, made from a Pollack Belgian linen, catch
the ocean breeze.

“She liked [the home’s] small scale,” Ellie says. “She already has a large home in Santa Barbara—this seems to go back to something real and personal. It’s a great house for her and two or three friends.”

Photo by Michel Arnaud, styling by Carlos Mota

Things that have been in Oprah’s life for years have also been put to
fresh use, creating a collage of her personal history. A Shaker chest that sat
in her Indiana kitchen for 10 years now stands in the front hall; a table from a
former pool house fits right into the new dining room. Ellie added the chairs,
covering them in a striped cotton that contrasts playfully with the checkerboard
design of the wool rug from Beauvais Carpets.

“I grew up in a rural folk environment, and I’m still rooted in things that have brought me comfort over the years,” Oprah says.

Photo by Michel Arnaud, styling by Carlos Mota

A strong connection to her past drew Oprah to The Waterboy, a 1946 masterpiece by the famous American painter Thomas Hart Benton. It’s one of her most recent purchases and one of the most dramatic. “He’s like someone I knew growing up,” she says of the painting’s plaid-shirted, straw-hatted young man. “I bought him because I loved him.” Now in the dining room, his presence powerful and alive, The Waterboy is like a welcome old friend.

On the 18th-century English dresser, which still retains its original blue paint, a cluster of multicolored French Jaspé pottery pitchers stands between two brass candlesticks housed in 19th-century glass hurricanes.

In the kitchen, Ellie had the ceiling stenciled with a pattern inspired by an old quilt. Windsor-style bar stools pull up to the island, above which hangs a triple light fixture from Ann-Morris Antiques. The gas range is from Wolf. The polka-dot dinner plates and bowls are from Vietri. Floral design throughout is by Sheryl Suzuki and Eileen Woods.

Even across the Pacific and far from her roots, Oprah has created a place to call home. “I love, love, love my house,” she says. “It’s a gem, so sweet and exquisite. Such a real, normal house. It feels like a nice blanket.” Then she adds, “A lovely and soft cashmere one.”

Richest African American. Oprah Winfrey is an American television TV host and best known for her “Oprah Winfrey Show”. She is also a television producer, actress, philanthropist and author. On January 29, 1954, Oprah Gail Winfrey was born to Vernita Lee and Vernon Winfrey on a remote farm in Kosciusko, Mississippi. The Oprah Winfrey Show, which originated in Chicago and was broadcast nationwide from 1986 until 2011, was the highest-rated television programme of its kind in history. Known as one of the most influential people in her country and a multi-millionaire, she holds an extensive real estate portfolio with properties in Montecito, Chicago, Hawai, Florida, New Jersey, Colorado and Washington state.

Montecito, California

The main residence of Oprah is in Montecito, California. Promised Land is the name of the estate. The magnificent Promised Land estate, now valued at over $100 million, spans 70 acres. Oprah’s 23,000 square-foot estate, a majestic neo-Georgian mansion, lies in its centre. The magnificently planted grounds also feature rose gardens, terraces, and fountains. The mansion is a big guesthouse with a private pool, a wine cellar, tennis courts, a gourmet kitchen, 14 baths, 10 fireplaces, and two home theatres. Along with numerous gardens, the property also has fruit and avocado groves.

Madroneagle Estate

Designed by Dickinson McDowell and her late husband, Madroneagle Estate, a 41-acre estate situated on Orcas Island, is a part of Washington state’s northwest. It is an estate with 7,303 square feet and is designed using local sandstone and reclaimed wood making it a sustainable house. The eco-mansion features four bedrooms, and five bathrooms, and overlooks its very own beach. It is tucked away in a tranquil Asian-style garden. The open-concept living space in the house is exquisite. The room’s lofty ceilings, exposed stone walls, and massive fireplace leave a lasting impression. It has a light-filled kitchen with skylights on the ceiling. A home office where Oprah may work while away from the studio is one of the many entertaining elements of the house, along with space for wine storage and tasting. Even the guest house, a four-bedroom retreat, has its own name: the Gallery House.

Telluride Home

Winfrey bought this 8,700 square foot, incredibly scenic home in Telluride, Colorado, in 2014. The 8,700-square-foot house’s living room is the most stunning area. It impresses with a massive stone fireplace, spectacular floor-to-ceiling windows, and a double-height ceiling with wood panelling. The home has been outfitted with cutting-edge Smart technology that manages everything from security to lighting and heating. It also has a family room with a library, a billiards table, and a movie projection screen that drops from the ceiling and vanishes when not in use, which is a necessity for its book-lover owner. The open-plan kitchen is airy and features stainless steel worktops with fine oak cabinets. Although the area has exposed steel beams that give it a hip industrial appearance, the warm wood cabinets and rustic stone walls keep it from being dull. An eight-person dining space is accessible from the kitchen.

Maui Home

Spanning 163 acres, the Maui estate is a vacation home in Kula, Hawaii. The stunning farmhouse with its wraparound veranda, which, like the terrace on the upper level, is the best place to spend away balmy afternoons, has to be the focal point of Oprah’s peaceful Hawaiian hideaway. The high ceiling of her bedroom makes the room feel open and airy, and Ellie -her interior designer painted a flower motif between the beams to maintain the folk-art aesthetic. “She liked [the home’s] small scale, she already has a large home in Santa Barbara—this seems to go back to something real and personal. It’s a great house for her and two or three friends.”- Ellie.

Seamair Farm Estate:

Located right in the heart of Montecito, Seamair estate is spread over 23 acres and designed by Architect Cliff May following a ranch house style. The mid-century masterpiece boasts four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a wine cellar, and a total of four fireplaces inside of an open-concept design with wood siding. Encircled by a gorgeous tropical garden is a secluded swimming pool. Additionally, there are three charming homes on the site, which are used to lodge workers or visitors. The equestrian facilities on the estate are of the highest quality and have been kept in immaculate condition. There are well-kept grounds and an octagonal gazebo in the middle. A lovely koi pond with water-loving reeds adds up to the beautiful landscaping of the property.

Oprah’s Spanish Revival estate

Located in Montecito and designed by Californian architect James Osbourne Graig, The Spanish revival estate has a living area that has a basic, elegant, yet cosy vibe owing to its whitewashed walls, and wooden vaulted ceiling, huge lattice windows, and substantially sized fireplace. The kitchen maintains the same simple yet rustic design. Oprah loves the handcrafted wood cabinetry, the marble-topped centre island, as well as the wooden ceiling with many skylights. The kitchen is plain and minimalist but still manages to be a cosy and welcoming area. The master suite maintains the elegant concept. With exposed beams, bay windows, and French doors leading to the tranquil rear, the space is charming.

Inside look at Oprah Winfrey’s impressive real estate portfolio

Oprah has become a property mogul over the years.property portfolio. Picture: Realtor.com

Oprah Winfrey, the billionaire media mogul, philanthropist, and actor, also happens to be a real estate tycoon.

Over the years the media queen has bought and sold many properties. But we did some digging, and it turns out, those were just the tip of the iceberg of Winfrey’s holdings.

When it comes to real estate, Winfrey has so many favourite things.

The result is a massive property portfolio. Let’s break down the list of homes she’s bought, sold, and currently holds.

‘The Promised Land’

Although she owns homes from coast to coast, Winfrey’s main residence can be found in Montecito, CA, a coastal community near Santa Barbara. It’s nearly two hours (with traffic) northwest of Hollywood.

To get a sense of just how exclusive Montecito is, the median list price of a home in the town is $2. 3 million, and it has a couple of dozen homes currently on the market whose asking prices are over $10 million.

In 2001, Winfrey moved into the neighbourhood with the $50 million purchase of a place she’s dubbed “The Promised Land.”

The enormous neo-Georgian estate comprises six bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, and a 3,136 sqm home on more than 40 acres.

Offering mountain and ocean views, the gorgeous grounds include a pool, stables, landscaped gardens, her bountiful vegetable gardens, as well as a pond.

Other features include a tea house, an “upscale outhouse’, plus more than 600 verdant rose bushes.

Winfrey continues to expand her Montecito masterpiece. She snapped up an additional 23.26 acres in 2015 for $28.85 million.

Most recently, she snagged her neighbour Jeff Bridges’ longtime retreat for $6. 85 million, bringing her total acreage in the area to nearly 70 acres.

Aloha, Hawaii

Winfrey reportedly owns extensive plots of land in Hawaii, but the details are most clear for her farmhouse on the island of Maui.

Winfrey’s romance with Maui started back in 2003, when she purchased two properties in the Kula community on the Valley Isle, adding up to 23 acres for $5. 3 million.

Each of those lots contain multiple buildings.

That purchase appears to have included a boutique bed and breakfast. So it seems she always expected to welcome guests to her tropical paradise.

Winfrey has continued snatching up properties in the area, for a total of over $40 million and some 163 acres, according to O Magazine, which featured this video of Winfrey herself driving around her property on one of two all-terrain vehicles given to her by Ralph Lauren. She discovered the ATVs on his ranch.

She’s even rumoured to have built a secret road to her property, making access to the more populated parts of Maui that much easier.

In addition to her Kula holdings, she purchased over 60 acres in the Hana area back in 2005.

The Winfrey (Windy) City

“The Oprah Winfrey Show” was broadcast from Chicago from 1986 to 2011.

Along the way, Winfrey scored a few properties in Illinois. But with the end of her show’s long run in the Windy City, Winfrey appears to have also moved on from her real estate there.

In the 1990s, she bought four condos on the 56th and 57th floors of a luxury high-rise, with the idea of converting them into one duplex. The 900 sqm property sold in 2015 for $4.6 million.

She also shed a three-bedroom apartment over the Four Seasons Hotel that she had bought in 1994 for $100,000. The high-end home sold for $1.275 million in 2015.

She also bid adieu to three units in a historic downtown building known as Acorn Lofts.

In 2013, she sold three of the live/work spaces, one for $675,000, another for $507,000, and a third for $875,000. For an idea of what the lofts look like, there’s a unit currently on the market (that’s not connected to Winfrey) for $1.6 million.

She also sold a modest colonial in Elmwood Park, IL, for $375,000 in 2018.

She’s also been spotted picking up homes in Tennessee, Illinois, and Indiana, most of those houses are believed to be occupied by members of her family.

Mountain getaway

Oprah also has a cold-weather hideaway. She purchased 66 acres in coveted Mountain Village, Colorado in 2014, for $10,850,000.

She apparently had a custom home constructed on the property, which sits above the ski town of Telluride.

But while it was being built, she reportedly bought a “temporary” home away from home to monitor the construction: a hi-tech mansion in Telluride for $13.7 million.

The contemporary construction offers complete privacy and direct trail access.

The grounds include a treetop observation tower, a fully functional funicular, and a glass and steel bridge over the great room.

Georgia on her mind

Some long-ago purchases have since been sold by the 65-year-old.

In Atlanta, Winfrey sold a 450 sqm, 39th-floor penthouse for $1.8 million in 2008.

Reports were not clear on whether she ever made use of the place for herself. She made a small profit on the property, which she bought in 2003 for $1,515,000.

She also had a 560 sqm house in Douglasville, GA, on 1.6 acres, which she had bought in 2005 for $825,000. That suburban five-bedroom home was gifted to a lucky somebody in 2011.

Island living

Back in the late 1990s, Oprah had a fling with Florida life. She decamped to ultra-exclusive Fisher Island as a winter escape and snapped up multiple condos on the private island paradise, which is known as having one of the highest per capita incomes in the country.

However, she’s since let go of her Florida homes, which were all sold in the early 2000s. Many of them were smaller one-to-four bedroom apartments, and appeared to be for her entourage and friends.

Oprah’s former four-bedroom condo on Fisher Island. Picture: realtor.com

Her 575 sqm penthouse sold in 2001 for $6.5 million. At the time, the sale price was considered “unheard of.” That seems quaint now — the same penthouse recently changed hands again for $13.5 million.

Of course, after those sales, Oprah began buying up homes in Hawaii, a place that obviously held more appeal for the A-lister.

And the island life beckons closer to the mainland, too. The real estate maven reportedly picked up a 43-acre estate on Orcas Island, part of the San Juan Islands in Washington state, last May.

Oprah’s new digs, for which she paid $8.2 million, include a four-bedroom, five-bathroom compound, plus a guesthouse.

Oprah Winfrey’s father, Vernon Winfrey, dies at age 89.

Oprah confirmed in a social media post. She wrote that her father died in Nashville on Friday.

“Yesterday, with the family surrounding his bed, I had the sacred honor of witnessing the last breath of the man in charge of my life,” the media mogul wrote. “We felt peace enter the room as it leaves.”

Details of funeral plans not immediately released.

Earlier this week, Oprah surprised her father by throwing him a surprise barbecue in Nashville on the Fourth of July. The event was called “Vernon Winfrey Appreciation Day” and included a barber chair in honor of his long career as a barber and nearly 50 years of owning his own shop in Nashville.
