Painting ideas for a room: 20 paint ideas: paint ideas for walls, floors, and more

20 paint ideas: paint ideas for walls, floors, and more

Creative paint ideas can bring unique beauty to a home – and the more inventive they are, the better.

As Marianne Shillingford, creative Director at dulux says:  ‘The right paint colors can even make small spaces appear larger and reconnect us with nature. It has always had the power to transform on more levels than the way things look and we are only just beginning to realise its potential in our homes.’

We’ve curated our favorite paint ideas, showing how to introduce color in a variety of interior design settings to help you create a completely new scheme in your home.

Paint ideas – 21 looks for every room and surface

These paint tricks will inspire a whole new look for your home, perhaps just a room or even only a piece of furniture. Whatever, they have the power to create a dramatic transformation in hours.

1. Make your space pop

Chinoiserie is re-emerging as an influence in fashion and interiors but it has long been a key aesthetic for de Gournay, eminent specialist in hand-painted wallcoverings.

This bold interpretation is courtesy of French designer Vincent Darré, who created this stunning dining room color scheme for the private apartment of de Gournay’s Paris showroom. The primary colors of the scene dazzle against a black background and Vincent has emphasized this contrast by painting the window surround in a bold yellow and the skirting in a fresh green. The ceiling was painted black, which will give evening events an extra intensity, a stand-out look for ceiling paint ideas.

2. Include details through paint

If your space is lacking in architectural interest, you’ll be amazed at what paint tricks you can incorporate to add intrigue to an otherwise simple scheme.

Using bathroom paint ideas in a room doesn’t have to mean optical overload. ‘This stripe detail adds interest to a room that has few architectural features,’ says interior designer Guinness, who painted neat parallel stripes along this bathroom’s ceiling, a great look for a modern, ceiling trim idea.

3. Use paint to create ‘zones’

Gloss paint is back after years in the wilderness. In the main bedroom of this home in Notting Hill, designers Barlow & Barlow created a soothing scheme to turn their clients’ corridor into a dressing room. The paint color is Dulux green, 10GG 15/346.

As well as being light-reflective and available in a wide choice of colors, gloss is also one of the best paint finishes for high-traffic areas such as dressing rooms, hallways and landings, as it’s hardwearing and scuff-resistant.

Colorful homes are an immersive experience that leads from room to room. A carefully considered palette will feature shades that work with the objects in the room – such as these orange walls and the red kimono – and that also flow from one space into another.

5. Paint with a variety of colors from the same palette

When planning multiple colors, test various permutations. Stronger shades are used on the lower walls, inside and outside the room. The pink inside is used to frame the windows and complement the red-brown lower wall, softened by the creamy white above.

6. Paint panelling a warm color for an inviting, warm entryway

A hardworking and always on-the-go home space, entryway surfaces demand the toughest of finishes and savvy shade choices to keep them looking great for longer. When searching for hallway paint ideas, choose washable or even scrubbable quality paint, using a satin finish for woodwork. If gloominess is an issue, go for a silk finish to reflect any light.

Colorwise, a neutral to mid shade will make the space feel larger. Using the same paint on walls and on doors brings a unified feel which is easy on the eye and counters hectic and heavy use.

‘For the narrow corridor of this Welsh farmhouse, we kept the color palette neutral and light to create an inviting entrance with a feeling of a calm,’ says Meaghan Hunter, Stylist at Neptune . For a similar color, try Honed Slate matt emulsion from Neptune.

It’s also worth noting that the right first impression begins even before your entryway. When thinking about the first room of your home, it is similarly important to assess the best hues for your exterior and, perhaps most significantly, the front door colors to avoid.

7. Experiment with color on woodwork

It’s a classic choice and perfectly natural to reach for a white or off-white color when painting woodwork, especially in hallways, but by choosing a less obvious shade, you can create a far more sophisticated effect – plus you can use this color to connect to adjoining rooms that might use that shade as an accent shade.

Just as you would opt for a contrasting, harmonious or tonal shade when painting a separate panel on a wall, look to using that color on the woodwork instead.

If painting woodwork on a wallpapered wall, color match your paint to a shade from within the pattern, using that instead for maximum effect.

8. Build up ombre shades on your stairwell

If you are looking for paint ideas that create a visual trick, particularly around making a space look larger, an ombre paint effect – with darker shades lower down and lighter shades above – is a good solution.

And, if you are looking for eye-catching and space-stretching stair paint ideas, use it on stair risers in a graduated to make your staircase feel taller and grander. Tester pots of tonal color will work a treat as you won’t need much to cover each panel, either.

The beauty of this look lies in its simplicity so decorate the steps and the hallway in a pale, neutral shade to avoid the remaining decor fighting against the soft, staggered colors.

9. Add layers of tonal color to make a space appear larger

Wrapping a space in warming layers of color not only creates a smart, cohesive feel, it can make a room feel bigger than it actually is. Patrick O’ Donnell, Brand Ambassador at Farrow & Ball agrees: ‘Carrying the wall color onto all of your woodwork creates the illusion of more space.’

Choose a relatively pale hue for the wall and pair it with a darker shade (of the same color) on adjacent woodwork.

You can either continue the look though to the rest of the space with similarly tonal shades on furniture and accessories. Alternatively, keep the rest of the furnishings in neutral tones for a more subtle effect.

10. Try a stylish paint effect that’s contemporary, too

New directions with formulations and decorating techniques means dated paint effects have been replaced with sophisticated washes, textures and brushwork – perfect for living room paint ideas that add a touch of depth to a wall, a must-have in contemporary homes, which can lack architectural detailing.

Paints premixed with sand and chalk offer plaster, suede or concrete effect finishes. At the other end of the scale, you can introduce acrylic varnishes and even glitter to give a glossy glaze.

This look taps into the soulful decorating mood of the moment, picking up on Scandi hygge vibes and the artisan global influences.

‘This deep color has been used to bring interest and mood to the simple interior,’ explains Bronwyn Riedel, Co-founder and Color Creator, Bauwerk Colour . ‘Painted over lime render, the soft, tonal finish is a counterpoint to the use of natural materials such as ply and the natural limestone floor.’

This is ‘Mountain’ from the Raw Refined range, limewash natural paint suitable for interior and exterior walls, Bauwerk.

11. Paint a ceiling in a bold shade

(Image credit: Paint & Paper Library)

While most people tend to paint walls in a feature color, consider flipping the look by choosing a bold color for your ceiling instead. Compared to an all-white ceiling, a colorful one will add drama and personality to a room, while making it feel cozier, too.

Keep walls predominantly white – if you prefer, you can choose a subtle, coordinating shade below the dado rail – and pick a strong shade for your ceiling.

This look is especially effective when the same color is echoed on the walls in an adjacent room.

12. Paint a contrasting panel to draw focus

Just as you would add a rug to create a separate zone in a large room, a painted wall panel can do the job just as effectively. This can particularly work for dining room color schemes, drawing attention to the table, and creating an intimate atmosphere.

Here, a small dining area in an open plan room is pulled into sharp focus by the clever painted panel on the wall behind the table and chairs. Stretched up onto the ceiling, it creates a wrap around effect on the space, giving an overall cocooning effect to a spacious room with lofty ceilings.

13. Zone a room with color blocking

Color blocking is a clever way to divide a space, distinguish an activity, or change the pace in a portion of a room. Paint can be applied to create a backdrop to a desk space, define a reading area, or a creative corner. It’s also one of those useful kitchen color ideas if you want to achieve a new look quickly – but ensure you use a wipeable paint.

Here, a faux backsplash feature introduces countertop activities in a tall kitchen and adds a splash of cheerful color. Adding bands of bolder hues adds a designer look to large and plain surfaces.

‘Dark units really ground the space and the horizontal block of green connects the kitchen with the garden beyond,’ says Anna Hill, Brand Director, Fenwick & Tilbrook . ‘Being a fairly small space, we kept the rest of the walls an off-white to keep it fresh and bright.’

This type of paint idea is a good match for painted kitchen cabinet ideas, too.

14. Go for wraparound color

Looking for bedroom color ideas that are inviting? Warming paint ideas are always welcome in a bedroom. By taking the same shade across all surfaces, including paneling, skirtings, and even doors and window frames, you can make a space look bigger in just a few brush strokes.

It’s also a great technique for bringing together fragmented rooms, and can be used as an entire color scheme for a whole floor or house. Any shade can be used, but this cozy nutty color brings a snug element that suits a bedroom or cosy snug.

15. Get creative with painted furniture

Using painted furniture ideas is an easy way to create a unique look that’s easy to achieve. Pretty-up a cabinet and coat a wall in candy stripes – paint is a chance to add a touch of whimsy to your decor scheme. What keeps the look sophisticated, not saccharine, is the edited color palette, grounded with a deep forest green.

Wall painted in Piranesi Pink and Pointe Silk. Floor, headboard, chest of drawers and lamp painted in a selection of Chalk Paint: all Annie Sloan .

16. Use paint to give children’s rooms a smart finish

Strong kids’ paint room ideas are a must since these spaces tend to be over-stuffed with toys, gadgets, books and. .. more toys. So, majoring on one main color, with a neutral accent shade can help it feel less chaotic and much smarter. As in other rooms, putting the same color – in different tones – across walls, woodwork and even furniture can create a sleek finish.

17. Paint a floor for an instant new look

It’s likely that you will be using bathroom paint ideas to add character to a washroom, but you can create an all-over cohesive look with a painted floor, picking out a color that complements that of the walls, accessories – and even the bath tub.

‘Painting wooden floorboards is an option in a bathroom,’ says Lucy Searle, Homes & Gardens‘ Editor in Chief. ‘After all, this is a room that’s unlikely to see heavy footfall. Your main worry needs to be ensuring good preparation of the surface, choosing the right paint – ideally one that’s suitable for bathrooms – and making sure too that there is a protective layer of varnish so that the wood doesn’t warp.

18. Add bold color to unexpected places

Color can be used to emphasize and highlight architectural features, from painting cornicing, pillars or arches in contrasting shades.

It’s the unusual that makes this particularly effective so so don’t shy away from using bolder hues, provided you keep a neutral background to provide the colors with a simple backdrop from which to shine.

19. Use paint ideas to highlight architectural details

Paint is the perfect medium to bring personality, add a unique appeal and even introduce an element of humor to a home. It can be a simple idea such as color change on panelling, adding pattern, or murals for an exclusive décor element. For ease, use decorating tape to keep paint smart with clean edges.

20. Use paint ideas to create faux effects

When you’re short on space, or just want to add a touch of quirky charm to a bedroom, why not paint a headboard on the wall?

Use masking tape to create the shape and ensure sharp, straight lines, then simply use a medium-sized brush to paint your design.

This example is from Farrow & Ball , painted in Incarnadine No.248, School House White No.291 and Breakfast Room Green Modern Emulsion.

How do I choose the right paint color ideas?

It is best to go for paint colors that make you happy and have longevity. If in doubt, it is often advised that you consult the color wheel.

The Color Wheel is an essential aid when choosing color schemes. Created by mathematician Sir Isaac Newton in 1666 to explain the relationships between colors, it gives you an instant visual for exactly which colors coordinate and contrast to create muted, tonal or dramatic combinations.

In her book, Recipes for Decorating , Farrow & Ball’s color consultant Joa Studholme notes that we are embracing stronger shades when decorating our homes. These include a range of hues found on the warm half of the color wheel, such as reds and pinks to oranges and yellows. Much research has been done into how colours affect our mood.

‘Current trends show a real shift towards brighter colors with a clean-cut finish,’ says Sue Kim, senior color designer at Valspar. ‘When choosing a paint color, don’t forget to look beyond the walls – consider the ceiling, skirting, window frames and mouldings and how they can be brought into the scheme.’

Can I paint every room the same color?

There is no reason why you can’t paint every room the same color. In fact, doing so can create a cohesive look for your whole house. There is an understated beauty in minimalism, something that we are seeing more and more of in the world of design. That said, you may want to add in accent color ideas through furniture and artwork.

17 Creative Wall Paint Ideas for Every Room in Your House

Like a great pair of jeans or the very carefully considered addition of bangs (seriously—think it over. And then think it over again), a fresh coat of paint can be totally transformative. From a crisp white that makes your space feel brand new to a punchy pick that ups productivity in your office, the right hue can have a wide-reaching impact on how you live in—and interact with—your home. The best part? When it comes to creative (and inexpensive!) ways to upgrade your home in just a weekend, nothing is easier to pull off. And for every paint color out there—and there are thousands—there’s a unique application that will match the personality and vibe of your home perfectly. Looking for a little wall paint inspiration? Check out 17 of our favorite ideas below—but don’t blame us if they immediately inspire a trip to the hardware store.

1

Paint on a Pattern

Robert Peterson / Rustic White I

It may be the oldest trick in the book, but using paint to create a striped pattern is a classic for a reason. Designer Vern Yip relied on the technique to bring a nautical touch to his family’s Florida beach house, coating his kids’ “sleepover room” in white (Alabaster by Sherwin-Williams) and navy (Commodore by Sherwin-Williams) stripes.

2

Cover (Almost) Every Surface

Thijs de Leeuw/Space Content/Living Inside

All-over color is a great way to make a big statement, transforming what was once a regular room into a cozy jewel box of a space. Case in point? The dining area of this Amersterdamn home, which designer Nicole Dohmen of Atelier ND Interior painted floor to ceiling in dusty lilac. She complimented the custom shade (try Hazy Lilac by Benjamin Moore for a similar look) with upholstered dining chairs and curtain fabric by Étoffe in the same tone.

3

Try a Trendy Hue

Amelia Stanwix

Paint is a great way to, ahem, dip your toes into a trend before committing hardcore to an of-the-moment palette or hue in more consequential ways (like, say, furniture). Dynamic chocolatey brown—like the shade Rich Biscuit by Dulux, seen here in a bedroom designed by Fiona Lynch—is about to be everywhere in the coming year. Mark our word—and your walls, you trendsetter, you.

4

Choose High Gloss for High Glamour

Thomas Loof

Want to up the glam factor in your home? Opt for an impactful paint color in a high gloss (or lacquer) finish to add sophistication and stately appeal to a forming living or dining space. In the 1930s Tudor seen here, designer Kati Curtis turned to an oil-based lacquer from Fine Paints of Europe to bring much-needed attention to what was once a forgotten transitional breezeway in a circa-1930s Tudor.

5

Go Dark for Drama

Chris Mottalini

A dark paint pick says so much about a homeowner—mainly, that you’re supremely confident and not afraid of a little drama (the good kind, that is). If you have a room with cavernous proportions, juxtaposition the scale with a moody, encapsulating hue, like the charcoal shade (Amherst Gray by Benjamin Moore) seen here in an apartment designed by Nannette Brown.

6

Try a Transportive Mural

Paul Costello

Encourage a flight of imagination by hiring a pro artist to cover the walls with one-of-a-kind artwork meant to inspire and transport. “The dining room was our greatest challenge, but it ended up becoming the most exciting room in the house,” says designer Sarah Gilbane of this Everglades-inspired space she dreamed up for an adventurous client. Artist Brian Leaver took to the walls—already covered in a textural grasscloth wallpaper—to paint a tropical scene, then created a trompe l’oeil tented ceiling for added charm.

7

Add Dimension With Moulding

Brie Williams

Help your paint pick enter a new dimension by coating a wall that already boasts decorative molding. Designer Ariene Bethea of Dressing Room Interiors Studio revived some of the character in her North Carolina home by adding molding wherever she could. In the office space, a saturated berry hue (Framboise by Sherwin-Williams) coordinates with the surrounding glam-eclectic decor, including a 1970s Gastone Rinaldi metal dining set that Bethea reupholstered with fabric remnants.

8

“Dip” Your Wall in Color

Stephen Karlisch

Just because you choose to paint your room, doesn’t mean you have to choose to paint your whole room. Consider “dipping” the space instead, carrying the color up three-quarters of the wall to create visual interest or appeal to an architectural accent already in place, like the vertical paneling seen here. Designer Stephanie Sabbe gave the 2021 House Beautiful Whole Home timeless charm using a similar technique and the laid-back hue Chapelle Green by Farrow & Ball.

9

Use Paint as a Room Divider

David Tsay

Ease a transition between spaces by utilizing a color that bridges the gap between two rooms and unites their design. Here, pro Justina Blakeney accented the flow between the living and kitchen spaces in her petite 1050-square-foot bungalow by coating the wall in Breakfast Room Green by Farrow & Ball—a hue that seamlessly blends with nearby tiles from Badia Design.

10

Fake Architectural Interest

PETER MURDOCK

Working with a plain, builder-grade home? No problem! For a quick fix, use this clever painting technique to create (faux) architectural interest around a doorway or window frame. “There was no ceiling molding and no molding around the doors in this apartment, so I added them with paint!” says designer Aldous Bertram of this creative and feminine space.

11

Coordinate With Your Wallpaper

Stephen Karlisch

Paint can be used to lend attitude to a space—or dial up the funk that’s already present. Emphasize an arresting wallpaper pattern by coordinating the paint in a nearby room to a color in the print. This bathroom—designed by Heather and Matt French for the 2021 House Beautiful Whole Home—relies on Farrow & Ball’s Duck Green to accent the adjacent malachite-inspired wallpaper by Phillip Jeffries.

12

Add Some (Faux) Texture

Genevieve Garruppo

Fake the look of a storied space—or accent an already stately home—with a painting technique that lends a sense of history and texture to your walls. Limewash paint has become a designer go-to for creating movement and dimension and can be realized in a range of hues, from deep clay to the cloud-like blue (from Porter’s Paints) seen here in a dining room designed by Caroline Rafferty.

13

Sneak in a Surprise Pop

STEPHEN KARLISCH

For an added dose of fun, coat an unexpected area (like the interior of a closet, pantry, or cabinet) in a standout shade. For a playful punch in this pantry, Pulp Design Studio used Daredevil by Sherwin Williams in a satin finish, which is low sheen but still wipeable—a must for a utilitarian space.

14

Craft Up a Mega Chalkboard

Paul Raeside

Chalkboard paint has earned a reputation as a go-to for classrooms and kid’s spaces, but it can actually skew stylish, too. The proof: this sophisticated apartment by designer Garrow Kedigian, which is coated in floor-to-ceiling chalk paint by Rust-Oleum and embellished with real chalk sketches by artist Rajiv Surendra.

15

Coat Just the Trim

Read McKendree

If you prefer your use of color whisper instead of scream, you’ll love this next idea. Instead of covering an entire wall or room in an eye-catching shade, have a bit of fun by painting just the decorative trim or molding. In this space, designer Chauncey Boothby used the nearby kitchen island as inspiration, cutting that hue (Benjamin Moore’s Yarmouth Blue) by 50% with white to highlight the trim work in the neighboring dining room.

16

Get Graphic with Graffiti

Karyn R Millet

At the end of the day, painting your home should be an artistic expression of your personality. Take that ethos to the max by hiring a graffiti artist (or getting your hands dirty yourself!) to tag your walls. In his California home, designer Eric Olsen tapped artist James Goldcrown to cover the walls of his daughter’s bedroom with his signature graffiti hearts.

17

Highlight Your Transitions

Frank Frances Studio

Think of this next idea as a highlighter stick for your home. Call attention to your doorways and window frame—or any favorite architectural feature—with a strategic splash of paint—the brighter, the better. Need some inspo? We love how designer Courtney McLeod of Right Meets Left Interior Design dialed up the drama in the hallway of this Manhattan apartment, accenting the Flavor Paper wallpaper with pops of Confident Yellow by Sherwin-Williams and Apple Green by Benjamin Moore.

When it comes to paint, walls are literally a blank canvas! Whatever room you’re decorating, there are plenty of creative paint ideas for walls to suit. From the huge scope of colours, to paint effects, and unexpected colour pops, paint is a brilliant way to add character to your space. Even in a room lacking any architectural details, being clever (and imaginative) with how you apply paint and colour can result in a scheme full of depth and interest.

The other big plus point in paint’s favour is that you can use it to create a big impact on a small budget. There’s a host of paint ideas that can be done with tester pots or paint you have leftover from other DIY and decorating projects so you don’t need to spend a fortune to add the wow factor to your space. So if you’re looking for a quick and easy project, paint offers stacks of potential. Aslong as you know how to paint a wall correctly you can grab your paintbrush and you can give any room a new look in a weekend (or less!).

Imaginative paint ideas for walls

1. Give panelling a tricolour freshen up

Separate panelling with the addition of a shelf along its length. This allows you to separate colours just like you would above and below a dado. Choosing colours that are tonally the same but from different colour families works well. Think about how to use the colour wheel – a grey, a brown and a green blend perfectly.

The addition of a painted up-cycled table, in a darker grey, adds to the look. Leave a fun circle of its original colour in the centre.

2. Go for vertical colour blocking

Create a colour-block wall of uplifting blues and greens by dividing the area with an off-centre stripe of white. Choose colours from the same colour spectrum, and look at colours that sit next to each other to create a sense of balance.

Continue the colour blocking living room paint idea through the scheme with graphic rugs, cushions and bold accessories.

3. Create a painted fireplace focal point

Paint a fire surround a bright, uplifting colour. This idea works brilliantly to add a pop of colour to a room. Use an eggshell paint so that the surfaces are easy to dust and clean.

Co-ordinate the scheme by painting log ends. You could even paint a circular canvas a flat colour too as an alternative to hanging wall art. Add colourful candles and vases to create a fun mantel display.

4. Try ombre stripes on shelving

Follow the trend for faded ombre finishes by choosing three to four shades from the same colour family. Paint the shelf and its background the same colour working from pale to dark as you go from bottom to top.

Display objects of similar colours to the shelf. This will provide a feeling of calm. Try this in dining room alcoves or across a narrow wall for a fun kitchen wall idea.

5. Paint a canopy over a bed

Take a statement headboard to a whole new level. Continue a painted area behind the bed, over and onto the ceiling surface when planning how to paint a ceiling. The painted panel creates a canopy of colour for a cocooning effect. Use chocolate, coffee and caramel tones for a bedroom scheme that is both warming and restful. Mix velvets, slub linens and textural cottons to add to this welcoming scheme.

6. Frame a vanity area with a painted arch

Paint a panel in an accent shade to give the impression of wall architecture where there is none. This also makes a look-at-me feature in a room where there isn’t a natural focal point. Use a painted arch to emphasise a feature, like this oversized circular mirror over a dressing table for a bedroom paint idea. It elevates the room and gives it a boutique hotel feel.

7. Highlight architectural details with colour blocking

Paint colourful blocks so that they break into a fireplace, or continue over a section of coving, or door architrave. This is a clever paint idea that gives a real designer look to a room. Choose between three or four shades of paint in striking contrasting colours for a bold statement. Or go for subtler pastel shades for a more soothing scheme. Make sure you cut in paint using masking tape and a set of good brushes.

Try using large circular shapes, or arch shapes as an alternative to rectangles and squares. Remember to choose furniture and accessories that have bold and sculptural forms. They’ll sit more comfortably with this eye-catching technique.

8. Enlarge the scale of a framed print above a fireplace

Love the print but feel it’s drowned out by the size of the wall you want to hang it on? Painting a square or rectangle behind it will give it the impact it needs. Whether it’s for an idea above a fireplace, sofa, or behind a bed, enlarge the space that the print will sit on. Use masking tape to edge the shape, then paint carefully within the tape.

If the framed print is rectangular in shape then paint a matching larger scale rectangle. Pick out a colour found in the artwork for your painted panel to complement the artwork. Alternatively, choose a contrasting colour to make the print really pop.

9. Paint bold squares in a hallway

For a modern wall display or gallery wall idea, create the illusion of an in-built cubby by painting vibrant squares on a white background. Then hang picture ledges the same length and arrange your favourite accessories.

Try bold shades of blue and orange for an urban vibe. Perfect for narrow spaces, like hallway ideas, try adding a couple of cup hooks under the picture ledge for hanging keys etc.

10. Enhance a bed with a painted canvas headboard

Make a statement above the bed with your very own art. Choose four shades of the same colour and start by painting the base with the palest tone. Then drip saucer shape amounts of the other shades onto the canvas at random. Using a wooden paint-mixing stick (on its side) drag the paint down the canvas at an angle, overlapping the different shades as you go.

This bespoke paint idea is super easy and can work with any colour as long as you stick with shades of one rather than trying to mix contrasting colours.

11. Paint walls using a scallop stencil

For the most up-to-date living room paint idea, look no further than simply painting a scalloped shape motif along the length of a wall. Ever wondered how to paint a scalloped wall – well it’s super easy!

Start by painting the top section of the wall, extending down slightly further than the line you want your scallops to fall at. Then paint up towards the scallop stencil in your base colour, carefully painting up into your stencil shape as you go.

Change the scale of the stencil to alter the effect. A smaller scallop will create a pretty country feel, whilst an oversized stencil will give a bolder, more contemporary look.

12. Add drama to panelling with bold stripes

No need to splash out on expensive wallpaper when a couple of paint tester pots will give you the same look for half the price. Creating fun bold stripes is a super quick wall panelling idea. First, paint the inside of the panelling white and then mask off areas to paint in the rose-pink stripes on top.

Keep the furniture simple with a wooden trestle table and black woven chairs, so that the stripes are the star of the show. You could try other wallpaper designs that can be duplicated by using paint – like terrazzo, polka dots or checks.

13. Create a piece of two-tone artwork

First, paint a two-tone wall and then using the leftover paint from the walls make a reverse-out masterpiece. All you need to do is paint two thirds one colour and one third the other (in the reverse to the colours you have on the wall). Hang so that the dividing lines line up!

Alternatively, use contrasting colours to your wall colour. Pick two shades of terracotta, for example, to make an even bolder art statement.

14. Balance the room using two-tone walls

Splitting a room in half using colour will make it feel cosier without dominating and keeping the top half white will give the appearance of height. Painting the bottom half a soft shade will act as fun DIY headboard idea and save on budget too. Take the two-tone effect all around the room including any architectural features such as architrave and even doors. Here the colour changes along the bottom line of a row of cabinets, it’s the perfect trick to make storage blend.

We recommend FrogTape to help achieve the perfect clean line when painting with two different colours.

15. Add a subtle slice of colour to divide open-plan living

Open-plan living is hugely popular thanks to benefit of making smaller rooms feel bigger and creating a more inclusive space. While it makes sense to paint the original spaces in the same colour, to provide a sense of continuity, it does present the problem of not having defined zones for different activities. A great way of subtly zoning distinct living areas within the same open-plan living room idea is by adding accent colours on architectural points of interest – such as archways.

Given it’s only a limited slice of paint coverage you can afford to change the colour seasonally, or when you switch up accent accessories within the room without huge expense.

16. Zone areas with an accent colour

How’s this for an imaginative way to add colour and character to a room? In this living space, the dining area is highlighted by the use of an accent colour painted as a backdrop on one section of the wall – which is then continued onto the ceiling above.

This thoughtful use of colour creates a dedicated zone. In this instance it’s for dining, but it could also work well behind a sofa or TV unit to signify a zone for relaxing or entertaining.

17. Get creative with shapes

To add an instant sense of fun to a painted wall try using alternative shapes. This fine example uses a semi-circle of soft pink to create the perfect backdrop for a bed in a bedroom. Using paint in this way in a bedroom provides a brilliant budget idea in place of a headboard idea.

18. Paint the ceiling for ambience

This is a winning bedroom paint idea, particularly effective if you choose a dark colour to emulate the night sky, encouraging a sense of being enveloped by the darkness to aid a good night’s sleep. In modern new build properties simply paint the ceiling as you would a flat wall, taping off the adjoining fours walls to ensure a crisp line of separation. If you live in a period property with high ceilings you can afford to take the colour down to the picture rail, if you so wish.

19. Stencil a rug onto the floor

If you can’t find the perfect rug to suit your space why not try painting one instead? If you have wooden floorboards the decorating world is your oyster. Use specialist floor paint to fashion a rug design when planning how to paint floorboards. It adds a unique decorative touch for any room with wooden floors.

Here we see a geometric chevron design skilfully painted in an array of bright blues and corals with a pale grey border. Painting a rug is ideal in rooms with high traffic, such as kitchens and hallways because there’s no danger of slipping – unlike on the real thing.

To adopt this imaginative idea we suggest planning your design first, measuring the space and marking it out with tape ready to paint. Paint as many coats as necessary, be mindful not to make it too heavy as this is more likely to get scratched. Ensure you allow the colour to dry thoroughly before you place furniture back – lifting, not dragging to avoid scratching the surface.

20. Paint on a chalkboard

Add an element of fun to a family room with a chalkboard idea. Paint a noticeboard with the specialist paint to create a family planner, for calendar events and weekly reminders. This idea is ideal for a kitchen or a child’s playroom to allow a little creative freedom.

21. Add texture with paint effects

To make maximum impact with your paint choice try using creative paint effects, which can add depth to any colour combination. By carefully mixing two colours, in this case neutrals, from the same colour palette you can create a textured effect for your walls. This skilful painting method is ideal for making a statement without having to use patterned wallpapers.

This textured paint effect on the walls was created using ‘Stone III’ and ‘Stone V’ pure flat emulsion, both by Paint & Paper Library. The muted tones are offset against the strong contrast of the black metal accessories, while hints of orange and light grey on soft furnishings inject a warming, softer quality.

22. Fake architectural details

Don’t let architecture stand in the way of your design dreams – what is it they say, fake it until you make it! Create the illusion of alcove or archway with a clever application of paint. Simply measure out your design and type with a masking tape, then carefully apply your accent colour to create interest.

‘Create a cocooning effect for intimate dinner parties, with a rich-coloured feature wall, like this arch painted in Dulux Simply Refresh Ink Well’ says Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director at Dulux.

23. Pick out a picture rail

Create the illusion of ceiling height by painting above a picture rail. This simple, yet clever splash of colour helps to draw the eye up, stretching the walls up. It works best with bare walls, rather than decorated with wallpapers and pictures. Choose a bright colour to make even more of a statement.

24. Frame architraving with colour

Draw attention to decorative woodwork such as doorframes and cornicing by picking it out in an unexpected colour (not white!) and carrying the colour further up the wall to give the illusion of depth. Pick a striking, contrasting shade to add pops of colour around the room by painting a chair or a lamp base in the same paint.

This idea helps to break up a solid expanse of painted wall, while adding an uplifting accent colour in the room scheme. You could also consider colour as an option when looking at how to paint skirting boards.

25. Position a half point with paint

If the dream is to own a home with period features, but you live in a modern space you have to think outside the box when it comes to decorating. For instance, if you don’t have picture rails, dado rails or cornicing adding interest to walls consider other ways to add these decorative details. We say fake it with simple paint ideas. As seen above we’ve created the illusion of a dado rail by simply using two contrasting paint colours – a striking green underneath a warm white. The effect creates a more characterful finish to an otherwise plain wall.

Create a zone of colour around a room’s main focus, around a desk area, a bed or a sofa. Using squares or rectangles mask off the area for painting and choose your shade. Indulge yourself with a colour you love but may be feel is too bold to use on all four walls, this is a great opportunity to give some braver, bolder shades a go.

27. Paint a continuous line for definition

Use an accent wall colour to break up a decorating scheme. This idea is most effective in a room where you have a clear defined eye-line from top to bottom, such as in a kitchen where the cabinets determine a base level. Using the bold of two colours on the bottom half will help to create the illusion of one continuous line around the room, even when the wall is free of storage. Choose a matching wall colour to that of the kitchen or utility room cabinets to help balance the space.

This method is an ideal small kitchen idea to give the room a sense of greater height, resulting in the compact space feeling bigger than it is.

What changes can I make with paint?

‘Painting a room in contrasting colours is a great way to create a dynamic space with plenty of personality’ says Judy Smith, Crown Colour Consultant. ‘Whether drawing a geometric shape on a bare wall or highlighting features such as radiators, skirting boards and window frames with colour. Using contrasting shades will add a playful and quirky feel.’

‘Versatile and impactful, the effect can be achieved by mixing bold and neutral shades, creating a variety of moods that will suit different styles of interiors.’

‘Contrasting colours can be introduced in a number of ways. Use natural breaks such as corners, alcoves, shelving, dado or picture rails to start and stop the different colour choices’ Judy advises. ‘Alternatively, a simple and effective way to use different shades is to paint up to a certain level in one colour, mask with tape and then paint above in a different shade.’

Whether looking to add architectural detail for a thoughtful dining room paint idea or creating a striking contrast with a dark ceiling as part of a bedroom paint idea, there’s an imaginative solution for every room.

And, of course, paint isn’t just limited to the walls, use the best paint for furniture to add a splash of colour to an old dining table and chairs, sideboard or chest of drawers.

Is it cheaper to paint or wallpaper a room?

Both wallpaper and paint can range in price from low to high but generally wallpaper is more expensive to purchase. Wallpaper often needs an expert to install it, whereas paint is on average a cheaper option and doesn’t need an expert to apply it.

Should I use a brush or a roller to paint walls?

A roller is much quicker to cover large areas but will give a slightly stippled effect due to its foam or wool finish, whereas a paint brush will give a smoother finish. You may find that rollers can cause a small mist of paint to spray around the room, so more care needs to be taken with covering furniture and flooring, than with a brush where you can control the paint a little more.

Always use brushes to cut in the edges before filling in the main area with a roller as rollers cannot get into corners easily. It’s quicker to wash and clean brushes than rollers, due to the fact they do not absorb as much paint.

Choosing the best paint colour to refresh your sleeping space instantly, or trying out a clever paint that won’t cost you a fortune, using paint in the bedroom really can make for a quick and easy room update. Whether you go for a split colour wall in calming blues or a painted stripe in soothing greens, we show you bedroom paint ideas to suit every style and taste.

Go for calming colours and natural materials, think soothing and soft rather than bright and stimulating – choosing a sage green over a grass green and an ochre yellow over a buttercup yellow. Get your space just right with bedroom ideas that suit your personal style.

Bedroom paint ideas

Try painting the whole room in one colour, walls, skirting, ceiling, cupboards, radiators and even window frames, to create a cocooning effect. Introduce rich textures in upholstery, quilted throws and comfy knits, layering these elements throughout the room for a warm and welcoming feel.

1. Repeat tones of the same colour

‘The repetition of a central colour will help enhance the mood you are trying to convey,’ says Justyna Korczynska, Colour Consultant at Crown. ‘Paint several walls the same colour of varying tones, or connect the colour through the room with matching accessories. Get creative with DIY by painting a plant holder or a chair in a similar shade to emphasise the tone of the bedroom. The theme can be further enhanced by the use of textiles in the room, for instance in the choose of bedding, or a colour matched rug or blanket.’

2. Create a striking headboard

If you’re tight on space (or budget), creating a hand painted headboard is a super affordable, easy way to transform a bedroom wall. Keep things simple with a panel of colour for your chosen bedroom colour scheme that can be easily changed, moved or erased. It’s a cheaper and less bulky alternative to an upholstered headboard. Choose any paint colour that you fancy, so you can really make it work with your style and scheme. For added interest position a wall light as if it were attached to a real headboard

3. Go for a painterly effect

This is a great paint ideas trick that makes your ceilings seem higher. Choose a colour on the base but then bleed into white and continue the white onto the ceiling, so that your eye doesn’t know where the wall ends and the ceiling begins. Paint the bottom in a colour also gives a more cocooning feel when you’re in bed, but the room will remain light and fresh, thanks to the white. Use a roller to paint the bottom half of the walls in the darker colour, finishing the top edge with rough upward strokes of a paintbrush.

Make more of a favourite painting or print by colouring a border around the frame. Use masking tape to mark out a square 8-10cm bigger than your frame and colour it in with leftover paint. Remove the tape and, when the paint’s dry, rehang the picture.

4. Try two-tones of the same colour

A ‘half wall’ or a ‘split wall’ is the description given to painting a wall two colours and dividing them with a crisp line. Painting your wall with two colours is an easy way to give the illusion of a higher or a lower ceiling. To add height to a room, use a darker shade on the bottom half where the heavier colour grounds the room and the lighter colour draws the eye up. Or vice -versa, with the darker colour giving the appearance of a lower ceiling and therefore a cosier, more cocooning room. Worried about how to paint a two tone wall? Don’t worry, we promise it’s easy!

This trick has the benefit of allowing you to use bold colour without overwhelming your space. It also adds an on-trend graphic edge. Don’t feel you must place the horizontal line in the exact centre, it can be split into thirds, or anywhere you feel the split sits comfortably within your eyeline.

5. Evoke the feeling of a night sky

Pale rooms can seem chilly and unwelcoming, especially in artificial light. By painting the ceiling in a deep colour you can really cosy up a bedroom with high ceilings. The paint colour helps bring the ceiling down, fooling the eye into thinking the room is smaller and more intimate. Medium to dark, rich and deep colours such as navy blue and chocolate brown on ceilings warm up the space and make it feel cosy.

So, let’s look at how to paint a ceiling. If you have a picture rail, bring the colour down from the ceiling onto the top part of the wall above the rail, this will bring the ceiling down further for a more cocooning feel. Painting a ceiling, or the fifth wall as its sometimes referred to,  can add another dimension and character to any room. Here it provides impact to an otherwise plain room.

6. Go for a geometric feature wall

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Dominic Blackmore)

Let the colours from a patterned textile or a piece of art inspire your design. This simple Scandi-style scheme is all about sugary pastel shades. When choosing colours that will sit directly adjacent to each other make sure they are from the same ‘tonal family’ – so all the colours have the same amount of white and  black in them. This means they’ll sit together flawlessly. Keep furniture simple like with this grey marl upholstered bed and painted side table. That way, the feature wall remains the hero in the room.

7. Give a wall its stripes

Inject a dose of understated elegance and sophistication into your bedroom by painting bold stripes in blush pink and white. A pink bedroom idea that earns serious style point, stripes on walls and fabrics bring a classic feel to any room and transform a bland bedroom into one with a boutique hotel vibe. Choose from tailored pinstripes or bold broad lines, in either horizontal or vertical stripes to bring order and structure to a space.

In a bedroom stripes work best in soft, pretty shades such as pale pinks, blues and greens. Pair them with white for a crisp, smart feel. Incorporate the woodwork into your stripes by painting the bottom stripe white, so that skirtings can be integrated into the white stripe with ease. Finish by layering silk and satin bedlinen for a sophisticated and glamorous space.

8. Create a cocooning canopy

Paint an area from behind the bed, over and onto the ceiling – creating a canopy of colour. Paint behind the total width of the headboard, adding 3 or 4 inches to either side, so the paint line is visible. Try a shallow canopy onto the ceiling for ease, or continue over the whole length of the bed for added impact. Use tones of chocolate, coffee and caramel in the bedroom to create a warm and restful scheme, mixing velvets, slub linens and textural cottons to add create a wonderfully welcoming scheme.

9. Fake a headboard with paint

A great way to get the look on a budget is by using paint in place of buying a colourful headboard. This fine example of a DIY headboard idea by the team at Crown shows how a little imagination can transform your bedroom scheme. Carefully pencil out your chosen shape onto the wall ready to create a defining line using masking tape.

10. Be bold with block colour

Using a statement accent shade to create blocks of colour has become a popular way to inject a touch of vibrancy to a bedroom. Using a thick masking tape section off a block shape you wish to paint in your chosen colour. Allow it to dry throughly before very carefully peeling the tape off to reveal an impactful injection of colour to your bedroom paint scheme. A bust of sunshine yellow is ideal to awake the senses and create a happy vibe. It looks great in this white bedroom, but would work equally as well in a grey bedroom idea.

11. Add accent colour as a border

(Image credit: Future PLC /Douglas Gibb)

‘Use natural breaks such as corners, alcoves, shelving, dado or picture rails to start and stop the different colour choices’ advises Judy. Using a deep dusky pink in the middle scetion alone allows this bedroom to feature a dominate colour, without it feeling overwhelming. The contrast is balanced with the help of crisp white bedding to echo the white ceiling and wood panelling featured on the lower half of the wall.

12. Create interest using a variety of coordinating colours

Why go for one bedroom paint colour when you can create a canopy of colours, that all serve a different purpose with the scheme. Use your first choice of colour to paint the majority of the walls. If choosing how to paint skirting boards we suggest using this same shade here, too. Using a darker gradient of the shade block out a painted section in place of a headboard. Work with a lighter variation of the wall colour to pick out the wood work, such as window surrounds and shutters. Then to add further interest use a completely different colour, but one with the same warmth, to paint a picture rail-like panel at the top of the wall to frame the space.

13. Use different tones to divide the room

Create elements of architectural interest such as a dado rail by combining two different colour choices, to form a clearly defined line. Paint up to a half way level in the more dominate of the two colours, mask with tape and then paint above in the alternative shade. This paint idea helps to create the illusion of the walls being more generous in height, which can prove masterful when decorating smaller rooms.

14. Add texture with thoughtful paint effects

(Image credit: Future Publishing PLC /Dominic Blackmore)

If you’re looking to really make an impact with your paint choice try using bold paint effects, which can add depth to any colour scheme, even neutral bedroom ideas. By carefully mixing two colours, in this case neutrals, from the same colour strip you can create a textured effect for your walls. This skilful painting method is a great way to make a statement without having to use pattern or shouty saturated colours.

This textured paint effect on the walls is painted in Stone III and Stone V pure flat emulsion, both by Paint & Paper Library. The muted tones are offset against the strong contrast of the black wall lights and side table, while hints of orange and blue-grey on soft furnishings inject a warming, softer quality.

15. Make a feature of a picture rail

(Image credit: Future Publishing PLC/ Dan Duchars)

Create the illusion of ceiling height by painting above a picture rail. This simple, yet clever splash of colour helps to draw the eye up, stretching the walls up. It works best with bare walls, rather than decorated with bedroom wallpaper ideas and pictures. Choose a bright colour to make even more of a statement.

16. Go deep blue for a cosy, moody look

Struggling to sleep? Get yourself a couple of pots of deep blue paint pronto. Dark inky shades like this will help you switch off after a long day in front of a computer screen – just make sure you banish your devices, too.

When using such a deep blue it’s important to break it up with pale wooden furniture and lighter linens so that the room appears cosy and cocooning – rather than bleak and oppressive.

17. Try balancing a look with on-trend pink and grey

Children’s bedrooms are the ideal canvas on which to experiment with paint effects. All you need is a decent masking tape to help you achieve those crisp lines – we rate Frog Tape every time. You could create ‘mountain peaks’ across the wall, or something simpler. If the room is being shared like this one, you could even use paint to demarcate whose bit of the room is whose. Keep the kids happy with our children’s room ideas

18. Add just a dash of yellow for a sunny bedroom

(Image credit: Future PLC /Colin Poole)

Channel positivity with this dynamic colour accent. Yellow isn’t always the best colour in a bedroom as we associate it with danger – especially in conjunction with black – which is hardly a good ingredient for a proper night’s sleep. But used sparingly against a calming neutral, it’s a veritable dose of sunshine. Together, the two tones bring life to a neutral base and brighten a light-starved space.

19. Paint the coving to match the walls

(Image credit: Future PLC /Olly Gordon)

Carrying a colour up the wall and onto the architrave makes the ceiling feel higher and a room feel grander. It’s a clever trick, particularly if you live in a house built in the 1980s or 1990s, where ceilings could be particularly low.

If you’re looking for a colour that will work with dark wooden bedroom furniture, a deep blue or green is ideal. Teal bedroom ideas have the effect of making the wood seem less ‘heavy’ and old-fashioned, which it might against a lighter grey or white, but still allows the furniture to pop.

20. Match curtains and walls in refreshing green

(Image credit: Future Publishing PLC /Simon Whitmore)

According to research, green is the best colour to paint a bedroom (a good plan if aiming to avoid the colour not to paint a bedroom).   A green shade along the lines of this soothing mint is perfect. Enhance the impact as a backdrop by choosing curtains in exactly the same colour. That way, you’ll have less of a headache when picking bedlinen as you’ll only have one colour that blankets and cushions will need to coordinate with, and a freedom to experiment with pattern. Green bedroom ideas are sure to make for a serene sleep space.

21. Apply a geometric wall mural

(Image credit: Future Publishing PLC/ Georgia Burns)

Work out the highest point of the mural, aiming for it to be off-centre from the headboard. Using a long, straight edge, draw the first mountain shape in pencil, adding more either side. Use Frog Tape to cover your pencil outlines and to criss cross random shapes within the mountain peak.

Next, pick three tonal colours of matt emulsion, starting with the darkest at the bottom and working up to the lightest. When the paint is dry (apply two coats if needs be) peel the tape away to reveal your mural.

22. Create a pink plaster effect

(Image credit: Future PLC /Dominic Blackmore)

Back in the 1990s, paint effects were the height of sophistication when it came to how to paint a wall. They featured in pretty much every episode of the original Changing Rooms, with plenty of us attempting to recreate the looks (not always so successfully) at home.

Then the Noughties arrived and our sponges and Fleur de Lis stencils were relegated to the loft. but could they be making a comeback? Maybe not the stencilling just yet, but a sponge is just what you need to create on-trend plaster effect or Ombre. Start with a base of pinkish white, then slowly build patches of blush pink and coral, going dark to light across the wall. Or you could cheat and use a wallpaper mural!

23. Paint a mellow feature wall

(Image credit: Future Publishing PLC/ David Giles)

Change the mood of a white bedroom idea by painting just one wall in an accent colour. Choose your wall well, and make sure the surface of the wall you opt for is in a good enough condition to have attention drawn to it. Sage green is a great colour for when you want to unwind, so using it in the bedroom will create a soothing vibe.

A feature wall is easy to repaint when you fancy a change, so you can be as experimental as you like with your colour choice. Just be aware, on-trend darker shades like navy or charcoal grey might require an extra coat to cover – worth considering when perusing the paint chart.

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Simon Bevan)

We love a feature wallpaper here at Ideal Home. But we appreciate that they can be expensive. If you’re looking to cut the cost but don’t want to be restricted to a single feature wall, try this neat trick instead. Choose your print, then find a paint that either matches the backdrop or coordinates with the pattern – the teal used here falls into the latter category. Then paint the bottom third of the wall in that colour and paper the top two thirds. You should save one or two rolls’ worth!

25. Use paint to zone your bedroom

(Image credit: Publishing PLC/ David Giles)

Paint is also a great way to create zones or section off an area of a room. Here, olive green demarcates a dressing and study area, whereas the area behind the bed has been decorated with a paler wallpaper. This attic room is flooded with light from floor-to-celiling windows, so it can take such a dark colour.

Which paint finish is best for a bedroom?

Matt paint is perfect for the bedroom. A flat matt paint is often chosen for bedrooms, over areas like hallways or living rooms, as a bedroom wall rarely needs to be heavily cleaned.  Flat paint finishes such a matt emulsion are less reflective than those with a sheen, such as silk or eggshell, and so the colour will look stronger and truer and it’s also great at hiding any imperfections or textures on wall surfaces. Due to a flat paint colour reflecting less light, it will also have a more calming and soothing effect within the room.

What are the best colours to paint a bedroom?

According to Justyna Korczynska, Colour Consultant at Crown,”there are many well-known theories surrounding colour psychology and how colours can evoke physical and psychological responses. When decorating the bedroom, it’s important to choose a colour that resonates with you. Consider how a colour makes you feel, if it would help you unwind, or alternatively help you wake-up in the morning. Cool colours from nature such as blue and green tend to be restful, whereas warmer colours like yellow and orange tend to be more stimulating”

So it’s important to choose colours that appeal to your taste but also create a scheme that will be conducive to sleep. Colours that have been proven to reduce stress and soothe the nervous system are blues, greens, yellow, orange and pink. Try to stick with neutral or pastel shades for a calm, welcoming atmosphere.

How do I create a painted arch in a bedroom?

Here’s what the experts at Dulux suggest:

  1. Apply your background colour first, using a roller to cover a large surface area. Once the paint is completely dry (this can take from 2-4 hours), you’re ready to start your arch.
  2. First, cut a long length of string and attach keys to one end.
  3. Use masking tape, stick the string to the wall at the right height for the side of your arch. Cover the string with chalk and ping against the wall to make a chalk-line guide. Mask along this line with tape.
  4. Decide on the width of your arch and, using a spirit level, make a mark for the top of the other side at the same height. Repeat the process above.
  5. Measure the gap between the two sides and mark the mid-point.
  6. Attach a pencil to the end of a length of string. Pin the string at the mid-point between the two sides so that the pencil reaches the top of both side lines.
  7. Draw a semi-circle to form the top of your arch, then carefully paint the outline using a paintbrush. Fill in the rest of the arch using a roller.
  8. Gently remove the masking tape while the paint is still slightly wet.

Feature walls for the win

Feature walls have been done and redone, for good reason. They are perfect for combining simple sophisticated designs with some added personality. A feature wall is essentially one wall that is dedicated to something different than the others. It could be a different color, a stunning mural, a beautiful pattern, or anything else you decide. The great thing about feature walls is the versatility and ability to experiment. Depending on the shape and size of the bedroom, you can really get creative.

Geometric inspiration

House Tipster says, “Psychologists have long recognized that geometric shapes have a place in our mental and emotional landscape.” So, what better place to use a stress-reducing pattern than the bedroom. You may think that painter’s tape is strictly for keeping paint off of crown molding, wall outlets, lamps, and other fixtures, but it can do a lot more. It is actually the perfect tool for achieving a sharp geometric design on your walls. To do this, simply tape a design onto the wall directly, paint over the tape, wait until dry, and peel the tape away. You will have stunning sharp lines that will add some fun interest to any wall.

There are a lot of great ways to utilize painter’s tape creatively. You can create straight lines, triangular patterns, spell out names, and so much more. The great thing about this method is that anyone can do it — the painter’s tape does all of the hard work for you.

Nature-inspired design

If you have an artist’s touch, you may be able to create some stunning designs in your bedroom. Nature-inspired designs — including plants, animals, clouds, or flowers — are perfect for inside the bedroom. They promote relaxation and tranquility which is the perfect piece of artwork to go to sleep with and wake up to.

Chalkboard paint for the doodler in your life

A truly creative invention is chalkboard paint. Just as the name sounds, this paint can turn any wall into a functional chalkboard. This is perfect for anyone who loves to draw, doodle, write notes, or just scribble on the wall. It is a great addition to a child’s bedroom, but can also be made into a sophisticated design for an adult’s room. If you don’t want to paint a whole wall, you can use painter’s tape to create a square, triangle, or rectangle. There are a lot of ways to get creative with this fun product.

Turn a wall into art

If you or someone in your family is an artist, try out a mural painting of any subject of your choosing. You can turn your bedroom into a wall of flowers, or create a relaxing beach scene for you to admire every night. Your imagination is the limit when it comes to designing a wall space you’ll love. The Abundant Artist lists several apps that allow you to preview artwork on your actual wall.

Incorporate frames, light fixtures, and more into your paint designs

One current trend has been combining a painted background with wall art. A common form of this idea is to paint a large, elegant tree outline and hang picture frames on top of it to depict a beautiful family tree.  You can make this idea your own by using your favorite picture frames, wall lighting fixtures, outlets, wall art, and more in your design.

Utilize textured paint rollers

Adding some texture to your walls can be a great way to add interest to the space. One of the easiest ways to do this is with a textured paint roller. These work just like regular paint rollers but they have stamped designs on them to create stunning wall patterns. These are available in many online stores and come in different patterns and textures for you to choose from.

If you want to be a little more resourceful than store-bought rollers, you can use things like broom bristles, cardboard, sponges, and other household items to achieve different textured looks.

Keep it simple

If you have read through all of these bedroom paint ideas and still love the idea of good, old-fashioned single-color painting, then do what you love. To speed up your painting process, look for paints with built-in primers. This will help you get the job done quicker and more efficiently.

Every color, pattern, and design is capable of evoking a particular feeling and emotion. This is why it is so important for your bedroom to make you feel happy and relaxed. It is the place you go to unwind and escape. The right color and style of paint can help you do that. There are so many great ideas, tips, and tricks that will get you on the right path toward a bedroom design that you love. How to Paint a Room? Check Top Colors and Painting Ideas 2022

Last update:
Home & Garden

Are you planning a small makeover but you have no idea how to paint walls so that the room looks stylish and trendy? Choosing the right color for a room is a common problem that bothers many homeowners. To find paint in the right shade that looks good and matches the rest of the house – that’s a real challenge. Learn the latest trends and create an interior that matches the top home decor designs of 2021. We have prepared a few ideas to get inspired with.

Before you start changing colors of the room

Even the most beautiful and stunning colors cannot look good without a thorough preparation. Neglecting that step might result in a sloppy look of the wall paint and, what’s worse – the color won’t stay for long. Having that in mind, before you decide to start painting a room, make sure to prepare the walls and the rest of the interior.

Wall painting is a specific type of activity that requres a lot of space. In addition, paint dripping from a brush might damage your furniture or other objects that stand nearby. For this reason you should start wall painting from removing everything from the room. If you are not able to take everything out, take care of the remaining elements. Cover every surface, along with the floor, using plastic covers. This way the interior is protected against accidental paint splatters.

To make wall painting easier, you may stick the cover to the surface using masking tape. This secures the sheet from moving around when you paint. You might also use the covers to determine where the color ends or to hide wall fragments that you are not going to paint.

Preparing the wall for painting

Preparing the walls is a crucial step in the process of painting a room. Without it, even the most brilliant wall colors cannot be aesthetic and lasting. To make sure that the surface is suitable for painting, tap at the walls you want to paint. If you hear a characteristic sound of a “hollow wall”, it means that you probably should remove the old layer of plaster and apply a new one. This way you can be sure that the colors will stay for long.

If your walls are covered with wallpaper, remove it as well. Otherwise the paper might soak during wall painting. As a resultit might roll and fold, which is very unaesthetic. Even the most trendy wall paint cannot save the day in such a case.

How to paint a room that has been covered with a very opaque paint? Removing such a layer is not easy, however it is possible. Regardless, the process requires a lot of dedication and patience. Avoid forceful scraping, as it might damage the plaster. To make your task easier, use special paint removal products.

How to paint a living room so that it looks bigger?

Small interiors are usually charming and they can be very cozy. If you have a small living room, you need to be extra careful, as small spaces, in contrast to large ones, are quite difficult to decorate. You can, however, make the room look bigger by choosing the right color to paint your walls.

The most effective method to paint walls of a small living room is choosing a uniform, bright shade. The most popular colors are beige, delicate grey, pastel pink or sky blue.

When choosing wall paint to your room, pay attention to the color temperature. It is particularly important in small interiors because warm shades bring the walls closer together, which makes the room look smaller.

No wall paint color can compete with brilliant clear white, which is definitely the most popular color of interior design in general. Perfect for small rooms, it is often used for minimalist interiors. Althought there are many shades of white available, the classic snow white is the most widely used. The second place belongs to off-white.

8 Creative Wall Painting Ideas You Can Do Yourself

Gone are the days when paint on the walls felt like a hospital, school or public place. Modern interior paint is matte, silky to the touch and comes in many shades. In addition, it is an excellent substitute for wallpaper. With its help, you can not only paint the walls in one color, but also draw, creating your own patterns. Here are some creative wall painting ideas using masking tape, a stencil and a sponge.

1 Color block

Color combination with large geometric shapes. Usually, bright colors are used to create it, which are opposed to each other, but the blocks can also be pastel, close in shade.

Vertical and horizontal

Division of space into color blocks in a horizontal or vertical plane. In a similar way, it is possible to allocate functional areas in a room, for example, a desktop as an office or an entrance area that is combined with a room. Two close colors look interesting in the horizontal division of the room. Here you should avoid the combination of white and color, this can cause the association of a whitewashed wall.

Color can correct the geometry of the room: lower or raise the ceiling, move the walls apart, deepen the room. In this way, you can paint sections of walls without observing clear boundaries. This will facilitate the strict style and give lightness to the room.

The most popular combinations and their influence on the interior

The more shades used, the more problems arise when finishing. It is recommended to give preference to colors that are partially repeated in the interior, or when designing individual elements. Cold shades visually expand the premises, give them a strict appearance. Coziness and a more interesting look appear due to pastel, natural shades.

When using two colors, it is important to think about how the seams are finished. Frames or borders, mosaic with stone are the best options.

        • One of the walls or a specific area is decorated with a wave, figures made up of several shades;

        • Large polka dots, Suitable for decorating any room;
        • Painted diamonds. The kitchen also benefits from this;
        • Each of the walls – in the same color, but in different shades;
        • Color inserts are widely known. All walls are painted with one color, they are separated by shapes with adhesive tape;
        • Classic use of two colors. For example, when everything is dark below, there is a central division. The house also allows such design;
        • Accent walls. One surface is isolated, and for others, calmer shades are used;
        • Original two-tone or more severe.

Pastel paint is a great choice when it comes to children’s room or bedroom. It is fashionable to decorate rooms using three shades.

It is recommended to give preference to colors that are partially repeated in the interior, or when decorating individual elements.

Painted walls are still popular. It is only important to think in advance which style is used in the design. The latest trend is natural colors from different palettes. The main thing is to make sure that there is enough tinted paint to perform any work. Otherwise, it will be difficult to re-select a suitable shade. The delimitation of space involves the use of masking tape.

Video: The combination of colors in the interior

10 examples of unusual wall painting for those who are tired of boring solutions (31 photos)

        Shades

Today we will consider ideas for the implementation of which you do not need to be a professional painter. It is not difficult to paint individual walls in different colors, it is more difficult to make a choice.

Bold and energetic natures can decide on a combination of two rich contrasting shades, just let their temperature match. Balanced and peaceful hosts will love the combination of discreet pastel colors. In any case, it is better to cover large walls with dark and muted colors, and small areas with light and bright colors.

If you take shades of the same color, then there can be even 3-4 of them, and the most saturated tone against the background of paler brothers will reveal its full potential and will look especially juicy.

        Horizontal

Expressive horizontal stripes visually expand the room, so owners of “corridor” rooms should take them into service and put them on narrow sides. If the ratio of the area of the walls is acceptable, but the ceiling is complex and low, for example, an attic, painting the room from the floor to the middle in a bright tone, and higher in a very light or completely white one, will help level disharmony and add space.

The stripes do not have to be the same width – gradually narrowing towards the ceiling, they visually push it higher.

        Vertical

When it comes to low ceilings, vertical stripes are more commonly used. The narrower and lighter they are, the more effectively they cope with the role of a jack. Wide stripes of rich contrasting tones should not be painted on the walls of a tiny room. The exception is an accent striped wall, which will be appropriate even in a cramped kitchen or dining room.

Running vertical stripes from the walls to the ceiling creates a cozy alcove or color zoning effect that works great in small bedrooms when the pattern runs across the headboard.

        Geometry

Let’s get more complicated and move on to geometric shapes. It can be chaotic arrays of triangles, compositions of ovals and circles, regular honeycombs and Christmas trees – you need to focus on the general style of the interior. In order for the furniture to look harmonious in such a frame, its shape must be combined with the selected pattern. Applying it will be easy even for a beginner, if you are careful and use masking tape.

Geometry, especially bold and large, looks better on an accent wall – throwing ornament around the room, you will almost certainly get ripples in the eyes.

        Stencils

Many people have the desire to create, but not everyone has the ability to control the brush. An interesting pattern can be applied to a plain wall by circling ready-made plastic templates or rolling silicone stencil rollers.

The simplest option is stencil wallpaper, which is sequentially attached to the wall, adjusting the pattern, and painted over with a regular roller.

        Texture

This technique requires minimal artistic skills and special glue paints. The bottom line is to give the wall a unique look with the help of factory or homemade fixtures. What just doesn’t come into play: brushes with long hard pile, wrapped in bundles or cut rollers, twisted rags, crumpled newspapers … a plastic bag can depict a semblance of a rose.

        Brick

Textured wall painting is not available to everyone: sometimes it turns out uneven, sloppy or just plain ugly. If you have struggled with the above methods and have not achieved the desired result, take a large sponge and arrange a real loft-chic in the room.

With the help of a sponge impregnated with paint, even a child will deftly cover the wall with fake brickwork. To enhance the similarity, walk along the “seams” with mounting foam or cement mortar.

        Gradient

Ombre staining is varied – it is a smooth transition from one shade to another, and a gradual lightening of a deep tone, and a cheerful hodgepodge of several bright colors. The complexity of execution depends on the chosen technique.

Only an experienced master can make an even gradient with a spray gun, and a beginner can make a careless ombre with a brush if he tries.

        Blots

At first glance, there is nothing easier than splashing paint on the wall or making watercolor streaks with a spray bottle. But artistic disorder is also art, you need to be able to put a blot beautifully. If you have owned this talent since childhood, get down to business more boldly, just do not forget to protect surfaces that are not intended for hooliganism from paint and water.

Bright stains and blots are good for accent solutions and walk-through rooms – few people feel comfortable contemplating such an etude all day long.

        Streaks

For those who do not know how to stain walls aesthetically, we can recommend a simpler technique: draw paint into a syringe and pour it down from a selected height. Careful pre-treatment of the surface is not needed – streaks lie more interestingly on an uneven wall. They can be color or monochrome.

It is easy to make a decorative horizontal or vertical stripe out of drips, delimiting it with masking tape.

Paint is not only one of the most affordable and easiest ways to decorate walls, it is also a fertile material for creative design. With the help of paint and a flight of fancy, you can make your interior unique in the world and delight your guests every time.

When preparing, the most important thing is to make previous coats as smooth as possible. Only under such conditions will the paint itself on the wall look as it should. Determine in advance the design of the wall painting.

After the wall is prepared, it is required to choose the paint itself for its decoration. With this case, you will have no questions, since there are a huge number of materials of this nature on the market.

The most important thing is to choose a quality copy that will be completely safe.

Wall painting with water-based paint has a special advantage over other materials in many respects, starting with a long service life.

        Popular colors

One of the most popular options for painting walls with your own hands is the method of textured painting.

This look not only implies beautiful wall decoration, but also different textures. Due to the large number of different textures, you can hide uneven and problematic parts of the walls under a layer of paint.

Another interesting solution to the modern style of painting walls and ceilings is frottage. In order to obtain this result, the use of special materials and tools is not required.

All you need is a plastic bag or sheet of paper and paint that doesn’t dry very quickly. After dyeing, paper or polyethylene crumple and thus applied in certain places.

In order to make the drawing more interesting, each next lotion should affect a part of the previous one.

Sponging is also an easy option that any beginner can handle. A special sponge is taken and paint is applied through it.

First, part of the sponge is dipped into the paint, then gently applied to the wall. This method will take a lot of effort and time, but the result is worth it.

        Interesting wall painting

One of the most modern variations of wall painting is painting on them. For this, special stencils for painting walls are suitable.

This may well be any specific version of the ornament, an impressionistic movement in drawing, or even a marker and chalk. The latter option is possible when applying a special layer of paint in advance.

Many, for sure, have heard about the type of decorative painting of walls that is popular in the modern world – the application of a graphite layer. It is a dark surface, like a blackboard cover.

After complete drying, this material is very easy to draw with markers and crayons of different colors. Here, the further design will depend on the mood of the owners, besides, these types are very popular with children.

        What about color?

The choice of paint is a serious matter, but first, you need to decide on the color scheme. Today, wall painting can be used in one or more colors for each room.

White is not only the base color of a standard whitewash, it is also an excellent option for wall painting. Most often, white is used for rooms or rooms where works of art (paintings), plants are located. Against a white background, such objects look more expressive.

If you want to use different colors, you must adhere to the following rules:

        • The walls in the hallway should not be lighter than in the bedroom and living room
        • Adjoining rooms to be painted in matching shades
        • The kitchen can be painted in colored tones, but it is better not to choose irritating colors

        Computer experiments

Everyone uses Photoshop today. This is not only a way to correct or improve the image, but also the ability to choose the desired design for painting the walls. On the network you can find various programs for selecting colors, which colors are best combined.

Particular attention should be paid to the decorative painting of the walls. Try to work with a photo editor and look at the photo of wall painting in various solutions to select the most suitable option.

Photoshop is not difficult to use. You need to fill in the color and choose the one you like.

Very popular is the unequal painting of the walls in the room.

        Colors

Depending on the room, a shade of paint is selected. If this is an office space, then there may be different variations, non-standard solutions. The color scheme for the office is not suitable for painting the walls and ceilings of the house.

Workrooms are often painted in greys, blues and other cool shades. For the home, it is better to choose warmer, calmer tones. But, with the right combination of colors, you can achieve a spectacular design.

Color combinations cannot be based solely on personal tastes and preferences. If possible, it is better to entrust this to a professional.

The most daring tones can be chosen for the kitchen, but the main thing is not to overdo it. Do not forget that the kitchen is a place for eating, and therefore, too aggressive colors can provoke a greater appetite.

It is worth remembering that with the help of the right color scheme for painting walls, it is really possible to achieve an excellent visual effect.

You can divide the room into zones using colored walls or a piece of furniture.

As for the combination of contrasting colors, this option is possible, but not recommended, especially on your own, without the help of a designer.

        Choosing a style

Before deciding on the color of the walls, you need to choose the style of the room (apartment). Each style has a specific list of tones, their combinations. If you are going to paint the walls with your own hands, then first choose a style.

If it’s hard to do it yourself, then it’s better to involve specialists. The popularity of wallpapers is declining significantly every year. Increasingly, they began to use the painting of walls with water-based paint.

If you want to decorate the walls with drawings, you can use wall painting stencils.

Everyone strives to find what he likes, and at the same time, do not forget about the combination of colors so that the walls of your house look harmonious.
