Painting with water-based paint: basic steps

When describing the sequence of work, we assume that you have already prepared the surface: cleaned it of oil, alkyd or synthetic materials, removed old wallpaper and whitewash. You have already plastered, puttied and primed the walls, or applied facing material: wallpaper or cork boards. Only under these conditions, the paint will lie evenly, will last a long time and will not peel off.

Ideally, 3-4 weeks should elapse between plastering and painting. Otherwise, plaster particles can change the intensity of the coloring pigment.

First step: choose shade, tools and prepare the room

When choosing a paint, there are three options for action. You can purchase ready-made goods of the desired color, tint the paint yourself or order tinting from specialists. In the first case, everything is simple: choose the color you like and paint.

If you chose tinting at home , consider the following nuances:

You will need a drill and a mixer attachment to mix the pigments. It’s not possible to do this by hand.
Accurately calculate the amount of paint. If it is not enough, there is a chance that you will not get exactly the same shade during subsequent mixing.
The tone of the paint in the wet state and after drying are different. To check if there is enough color, we advise you to paint a small board and wait until the surface dries.

The advantage of tinting by specialists is that the computer already takes into account the percentage change in color shade after drying. Therefore, you will definitely get the color you wanted.

If you want to visually enlarge the space, paint the wall near the window 1-2 tones lighter than the rest.

In addition to paint, you will need: paint roller, brush for hard-to-reach places and cuvette (bath). Professional painters use a spray gun, but the tools we have listed are enough for home repairs.

Choose a roller of medium length and with a short pile. To prevent lint from the roller on the surface, run it 2-3 times on the sticky side of the molar tape. The hair will remain on the tape, and you do not have to worry about the quality of the coating. If you plan to make the room colorful, buy several rollers. After you have chosen a shade and bought the tools, you need to take care of the shelter of the room. Although the water-based paint is easy to wash off, it is better to protect nearby surfaces from drops in advance. Cover the room with plastic wrap or newspapers. It is necessary to cover approximately 1.5 m of the area. That is, if you need to paint a small section of the wall, you should cover 1.5 meters to the sides and on the floor. Then definitely not a single drop will get past. Paste the joint of the wall and ceiling, skirting boards, sockets and switches with masking tape.

The main requirements for the room where the repair work is carried out: the absence of drafts and the temperature is within 5-30 degrees, otherwise the paint will lie unevenly. Humidity should not exceed 65% so that the coating dries quickly.

The water emulsion is quite thick, so it is recommended to dilute it with water. Manufacturers on the packaging indicate the desired proportions. If there are no instructions, add 10% liquid of the total volume of paint.

Mix thoroughly. If doing this by hand, and not with a construction mixer, stir for 5-6 minutes. Be sure to touch the day of the container when mixing, as the coloring pigments are heavy and settle quickly.

Always mix the paint before starting work, even if the break was no more than an hour.

Pour the paint into the tray and saturate the nap of the roller well with it. To check if all the fibers are saturated with pigment, roll the roller on cardboard or board, the paint should lie flat, without gaps.
Dip the roller into the cuvette and run it over the ribbed part several times to remove excess.
Start painting from the lighter parts of the room to the darker ones, that is, from the window.
Move from top to bottom so that drops and smudges do not remain on an already painted surface.
Apply paint up or down in parallel stripes. You can not paint diagonally or in a zigzag pattern: there will be stains.
At a time, try to paint 1 sq.m. Moving in this way, you can apply the paint quickly and without visible joints.
Do not stop working until you paint the entire room on one layer, otherwise the joints will be visible.

While the layer dries, wrap the painting tools in plastic. This will prevent the paint from drying out. So you can leave the brush and roller for a day. If you hold it longer, the paint on the pile will already begin to dry out, and it will be inconvenient to apply it to the walls.

To get a uniform monochromatic coating, paint in two, and preferably three layers. Do not try to carefully paint over every meter at a time: color transitions will be visible. Paint the room, and after 1.5-2 hours, when the coating dries, apply a second layer. So the paint consumption will be minimal, and the coating will turn out to be of high quality.
