What Color Should You Paint Your Bedroom?

Learn how to use the psychology of color to create a relaxing, restful bedroom

Ready to wake up a tired and boring bedroom and create a soothing sanctuary to lull you to sleep each night? You may think color is simply a matter of aesthetics but it can have a profound effect on your emotional and physical well-being – as well as your sleep . Understanding how the psychology of color influences sleep can guide you to a hue that will help you sleep better. Which is the point of your bedroom, right?

Even if you’re starting from scratch, choose something you love – a pillow, picture frame, scarf – and start searching blogs, websites and decorating books that display similar color groupings. Once you find something you like, limit your color selection to 3 or 4 hues and begin choosing the role those colors will play – active, passive or neutral influence.

Your wall color may be the active influence – and it might be a good starting point if you’re not sure where to begin. Remember that light colors are expansive, making a small room bloom into something larger and brighter. Dark colors add an air of sophistication and make larger rooms feel more intimate and cozy.

It’s time to have fun with color in your bedroom!

Should I paint my bedroom red?

The color of love, red raises energy levels – especially in sunlight – making the room feel more exciting. The color red has been shown to increase blood pressure, speed respiration and heart and rate, which can lead to stimulating conversations (and the other “S” thing we do in our bedrooms). At first blush, you might think it too stimulating for the bedroom but remember that if you keep lighting soft, it will appear muted and elegant in the evenings, which can be very relaxing.

If you love red but don’t want to commit to a whole, room, consider using it in your duvet cover, pillow shams or curtains.

Should I paint my bedroom yellow?

Painting your bedroom yellow can be an expression of joy and uplift and expand even the smallest sleep space. Its revitalizing energy can invite family members to linger and chat in the morning, making it a fun room to begin your day. On the downside, studies show yellow stimulates the nerves, which can cause people to lose their temper quicker and babies to cry.

If yellow’s your color but your partner can only take it in small amounts, pair it with a cooler color like blue. Yellow curtains on an azure painted wall with white furniture – charming.

Should I paint my bedroom blue?

A soft blue bedroom can calm and relax, lowering blood pressure, slowing respiration and heart rate – but darker shades of blue can evoke sadness. Blue can also be a cool color, which needs balancing and warming with darker hues. To encourage relaxation, think about warmer blues like periwinkle or bright blues like turquoise.

Cool blues balanced with warm browns can make a bedroom inviting and cozy. Consider adding in various shades of blue in pillows to make your bed the focal point of the room.

Should I paint my bedroom green?

Green is the soothing, restful combination of blue and yellow. While it’s a great color choice for any room, we love it in the bedroom because of its relaxation-enhancing qualities. It can cool down warmer, darker colors but it has enough energy that it can be used as the main color too. It has also been known to help with fertility…

Consider adding a bedside chair in your favorite shade of green. Play with warmer and cooler shades of green to add a pop of color on your bed as well.

Should I paint my bedroom purlple?

Long associated with luxury and royalty, purple can add flair and sophistication to a bedroom – but it’s better suited as a secondary color choice. Pair dark purple with lighter lavender and lilac hues to warm a room up and make it feel cozier. A whole room of purple can be overwhelming but an accent wall in your favorite shade of purple might be just enough.

Should I paint my bedroom orange?

Like yellow, orange is positively energetic. Darker hues of orange, like burnt umber, can be reflective, just like darker tones of red. In ancient cultures, orange was believed to heal the lungs and increase energy levels. Imagine waking up in an east-facing orange bedroom – talk about revitalizing.

Should I paint my bedroom black, grey, white or brown?

Neutral colors can be added to liven or subdue, balancing the energy of other colors. Black and brown in small doses can help accent a bright color scheme and give it depth. A white or grey bedroom can feel clinical unless balanced with punches of color.

Bedroom Paint Colors: Bedroom Painting Near Newton, MA

Best Bedroom Color Ideas

What color should you paint your bedroom? Bedroom paint colors represent rest and recharge, a cheerful ambiance, or intimacy and retreat.

Use wall color to create a specific feeling or mood rather than following current color trends. You’ll be glad the bedroom appeals to the senses and your whole-body health rather than a fashion statement. This is true whether you’re painting the master bedroom, a nursery or child’s room, or the guest room.

Bedroom Paint Colors that Help You Sleep Better

Interior painting may be the answer to a better sleeping experience. Choose a flat sheen in cool tones. Glossy sheens reflect light, which agitates restfulness, and warmer tones like reds and oranges stimulate rather than relax. According to abundant research in color psychology, these bedroom paint colors topped the charts.

Blue

Cool tones of blue paint look and feel good in almost any room of your home. But multiple surveys reveal blue bedroom paint colors help reduce heart rate and blood pressure, and combat insomnia.

Blue and blue-gray shades are a good option in dark bedroom paint colors, like Sherwin-Williams Bunglehouse Blue (SW 0048) or Needlepoint Navy (SW 0032). Lighter bedroom blues that imitate nature are also an excellent choice, like Celestial (SW 6808).

Green

The magic of green painted bedrooms is the restful calm they achieve as they mimic nature. Shades of green are also the most visible color to the human eye from a distance, which is why traffic lights are green.

Tranquil shades of green can help you sleep better and feel refreshing each time you walk into the room. Soothing soft greens in celery or sage tones include Majolica Green (SW 0013), Frostwork (SW 0059), or Acanthus (SW 0029). Darker greens to consider include Studio Blue Green (SW 0047), Drizzle (SW 6479), or Ripe Olive (SW 6209).

Yellow

Bright yellow offers a cheerful, uplifting, and even energizing experience. But this makes it a poor choice for the bedroom. However, muted yellow pastels wrap a room in warmth and comfort that’s optimal for a good nights’ sleep.

Try Icy Lemonade (SW 1667) or Pineapple Cream (SW 1668). You could also use yellow as an accent to neutral bedroom paint colors for a splash of sunshine that isn’t too intense, like Colonial Yellow (SW 0030). Benjamin Moore’s Little Angel 318 in dark yellow or Cotton Tail 2155-70 in cozy pastel are wonderful shades for painting a child’s bedroom.

Neutrals

If you prefer to go with darker bedroom paint colors, dark brown can enrich the space and convey a sense of strength and security. Look at Pashmina AF-100 or Intellectual Gray (SW 7045). Add lighter tints of brown with pink undertones or water-toned blues for a down-to-earth feel.

Consider lighter brown tones like Benjamin Moore Silver Fox 2108-50 or Sherwin-Williams Neutral Ground (SW 7568). In a recent study of 18 colors, brown was the second choice for both men and women for their living rooms and the fourth choice for their bedrooms.

Gray is okay in a bedroom with coordinating colors that brighten the area. Cyberspace (SW 7076) is a rich dark gray that works well with light grays and whites. Ben Moore’s Silver Half Dollar (2121-40) is lovely with white, calming blues, or cheery yellows.

Classic white tones are always fresh and pleasing as bedroom paint colors. Whites and creams provide the perfect canvas for decorating to suit your personality.

Final Tips on Bedroom Paint Colors

  • Avoid intense reds and oranges in the bedroom. These colors heighten the senses, inspire passion and even appetite, but often cause an agitated, restless night’s sleep.
  • If you are an early riser, choose soft, warm hues in the bedroom. You’ll still feel cozy as you fall asleep, but refreshed in the morning when you get out of bed.
  • Neutral colors work well in a baby’s nursery with either contemporary or traditional furnishings. You can let your decor tell the story rather than the bedroom wall colors.
  • Consult a color wheel or paint color chart to understand complementary colors. As a ProTEK Painters customer, you can also request a free color consultation from our paint color expert.

A bedroom is the ultimate sanctuary of your home. It’s where you can snuggle up at the end of a workday with your favorite book, the coziest blanket, and a pint of chocolate ice cream (we don’t judge).

Picking a new paint color can complete the vibe, turning your bedroom into the ultimate cozy space. Hiring professional painters for a bedroom costs an average of $525, but you can tackle the project on your own for just over $100.

Average Cost to Paint a Room Near You

Labor and paint costs vary depending on where you live, as the basic cost of overhead in your city can sway the price higher or lower. For example, hiring painters in Manhattan can run between $50 to $100 an hour, whereas the same job in Miami only costs about $32 an hour. Remember to factor in regional costs of living when finding the best interior painters near you.

Bedroom Sizes: How Much Can I Paint on My Budget?

Before you buy matching bedding and throw pillows to go with your favorite shade of blue paint, check out how much you should expect the final cost to be. You can cut costs by buying more affordable paint, only choosing one color, or taking the DIY approach.

$100 to $500

This range covers the DIY painting costs of a small- to mid-sized bedroom. Professionals can paint a 10-by-10-foot room for about $400, or a 10-by-12-foot room for an average of just over $500.

$500 to $1,000

Bring in the pros to paint a 12-by-12-foot bedroom area for up to up to $900. You will also have more flexibility in this range to add an accent wall, choose high-quality paint, or paint the ceiling.

$1,000 to $2,000

This price range covers painting a large bedroom in high-cost cities. Extra costs can also creep in if you need repairs to your walls, baseboards, or ceiling.

How Much Does It Cost to Paint a Bedroom by Square Foot?

Figuring out the cost to paint a room can feel a bit like a middle school math problem. Multiply the area of the walls by their width and height. If you need to paint the ceiling as well, add in this area, too. You can also skip the handwritten math and use a paint calculator.

Once you have your number, subtract the area taken up by windows, doors, and closets. If you have a baseboard, chair rail, or radiator, take these off (unless they’re also getting painted).

When hiring professional painters, the equation is pretty simple. Most interior painters charge between $2 and $6 per square foot, depending on your location and choice of paint. Contractor painter fees typically include the cost of paint, tools including brushes and rollers, as well as protective materials for your room.

In some cases, painters will charge $20 to $50 an hour instead of the per-foot cost. An hourly rate includes the costs of prep work, painting, cleanup, and, in some cases, travel time.

If you decide to paint your bedroom yourself, you’ll only need to pay for the paint, tools, and materials. Assume about one gallon of paint and primer covers 400 square feet. Paint runs between $20 and $100 a gallon, depending on type, and primer costs up to $25.

Painting a Bedroom Cost Breakdown

Let’s cover where the money goes when painting a bedroom. Whether you’re taking on the project yourself or hiring a professional, consider the costs of:

  • Paint and primer

  • Painting tools

  • Protective materials

  • Labor per foot or by the hour

  • Travel costs

  • Extra repairs and services such as baseboard painting

How Much Does Each Type of Paint Cost?

Paint finishes all stand up to different levels of traffic and wear-and-tear. For example, easy-to-clean paints are best in the kitchen, where you’re more likely to occasionally splatter marinara on the wall.

As for bedrooms, you have your pick of finishes and brands, as these spaces see lower traffic than other rooms and don’t usually need as much cleanup. That being said, if you’re painting a toddler’s bedroom, you may want to choose a paint that makes it easier to wipe off some crayon doodles.

Flat

Also known as matte finish, flat paint is ideal for low-humidity bedrooms. The paint does not have a sheen and can be tricky to clean. Each gallon costs about $20 and $40 a gallon.

Eggshell and Satin

Both of these varieties add a bit more sheen and reflectivity without losing that smooth finish. Because they are easier to clean, they are better for children’s bedrooms and run between $20 to $80 a gallon.

Semi-Gloss

This is the most popular type of paint for high-humidity and high-traffic areas, including bathrooms and the kitchen. It isn’t typically necessary in the bedroom but usually costs up to $300 a gallon.

Textured Walls

Paint finishes aside, it’s important to note that a textured wall effect can cost up to 50% more than traditional painting. This look is great for covering up wall imperfections or if you simply enjoy the aesthetic.

What Factors Influence the Cost to Paint a Bedroom?

Ready to jump in and transform your bedroom? Here are the most common factors that can affect the project’s cost:

  • Size of the room (area of the walls and ceiling minus doors, windows, etc.)

  • Regional differences in labor and materials

  • Whether you need extra paint colors or layers of primer

  • Paint quality and finish

  • Whether you need repairs or unique touches

How Much Does It Cost to Paint a Bedroom Myself?

Here’s the million-dollar—or hundred-dollar—question: can you paint a room yourself? In most cases, yes, you can paint your own bedroom with a fair amount of time and patience.

However, we’d leave this to the pros if your ceilings are particularly high, if you have sloped walls, or if you’re renting. It’s easy to drip paint on wooden floors and carpets, which can be a costly hassle to clean up.

Here’s what you can expect from painting a bedroom yourself:

  • Paint: A gallon of paint costs between $20–$100. Professional painters receive a discount, which is why you’ll see lower prices on your estimate if you hire a contractor.

  • Supplies: Brushes, trays, drop cloths, painters tape, and rollers can cost up to $100 when all is said and done.

  • Ladder: Always use an appropriate ladder, not a chair or a moving bin, if you need to reach high ceilings. These will run you between $60–$200.

The highest cost of painting a room yourself isn’t in cash, but in time. While the bedroom-painting process should take between four and six hours, be sure to add in the time to buy paint and supplies, move furniture, prep your room, and wait for the proper time between layers.

Bedroom-Painting Questions and Answers

The fun part about painting a home falls to the little details. We’ve answered some common questions to get you started.

Should I paint a bedroom myself?

The biggest benefit of painting a room yourself is cost savings. If you’re looking to trim your budget, this is a viable option if you have the time (and the drive!) to take on all the work. However, paying a bit extra for professionals can help you avoid spills, the cost of tools, and a long few days watching the paint dry.

What color paint should I pick for my bedroom?

The best bedroom paint colors create a calm and tranquil getaway to cool you down from the rush of the day. Stick with natural earth tones and pale neutral colors like blues, pale greens, cream, white and gray. Add vibrant accent hues in a child’s room or if you’re looking to wake up to a burst of color.

What other projects should I do at the same time?

One of the most exciting parts of painting a bedroom is updating all the accents that go with the new hue. Consider updating your baseboards for a fresh look, for example. You can also choose new window treatments and some cozy bedroom lighting ideas

What Sherwin-Williams Paint Is Best For Bedrooms?

Figuring out what color you want to paint a bedroom can feel tricky without the correct information. Do you want to freshen up your space or someone else’s with Sherwin-Williams paint but don’t know what kind to use? We will answer these questions and give some suggestions throughout this article!

Disclosure: We may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.

Sherwin-Williams makes plenty of paint formulas and colors for a bedroom. In terms of which collections to use, we recommend Cashmere, Duration, Emerald, and SuperPaint.

Color-wise, some popular bedroom choices for Sherwin-Williams include:

  • Snowbound
  • Neutral Ground
  • Slumber Sloth
  • Natural Tan
  • Serenely
  • Krypton
  • Pavestone
  • Drizzle

These top colors are mainly neutrals and softer hues, which are perfect for a bedroom design.

As we begin, we will cover all things Sherwin-Williams paint and discuss what kind to use for a bedroom. Whether you’re new to this brand or want some inspiration for your bedroom, we’re here to help. With that said, let’s dive right into this topic below!

What Sherwin-Williams Paint Is Best For A Bedroom?

Sherwin-Williams offers plenty of paints for anyone needing to spruce up their bedroom. Generally, you want to find a calming color that doesn’t make your space feel obnoxious.

As we mentioned earlier, according to Sherwin-Williams, most of the best-selling colors for bedrooms fall into a neutral category.

Whether it’s their fan-favorite ‘Snowbound’ or something more exciting like ‘Drizzle,’ Sherwin-Williams has an option for you.

One of the main things they cover on their design page is the importance of creating “calm” in a bedroom. It’s not surprising that the paint color you choose will impact this.

For example, if you want your walls to feel warm and cozy, Sherwin-Williams ‘Neutral Ground’ or ‘Neutral Tan’ are great choices.

Furthermore, the brand offers a deeper tan shade called ‘Slumber Sloth,’ which is perfect for a mainly white color palette.

However, you don’t have to choose a plain color, but doing this can give your room a more well-designed final feeling.

What Sherwin-Williams Paint Is Best For Bedroom Walls?

Moving on to formula, you want to find a Sherwin-Williams paint that will last. Some of the best interior wall paints this brand offers are Cashmere, Duration, Emerald, and SuperPaint.

These lines are all unique in finish, quality, application, and price.

Duration is a bit heavier, but it lasts the longest on average. You can also expect any Duration paints from Sherwin-Williams to have anti-microbial properties, which prevent mold and mildew from growing on your bedroom walls.

In addition, Cashmere Interior Acrylic Latex Paint by Sherwin-Williams is also a great option for your bedroom. Notably, it offers a buttery finish and easy application.

Next, the brand’s ‘SuperPaint’ line is smoother in texture and promises to clean easily. If you’re painting a child’s bedroom, this can be a lifesaver.

Sherwin-Williams also makes an Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex paint that is easy to clean. It features advanced stain-blocking technology, making this one a good choice for younger people.

Emerald and Duration will be the most expensive of these paints, so keep that in mind.

Should I Use White Paint For My Bedroom?

Using white paint for bedroom walls is always a good choice regardless of brand. Considering that white matches everything, choosing an easy-to-pair color for your walls leaves more room for fun decor and furniture.

Another thing to consider is that white wall paint reflects more natural light. So, if your bedroom is smaller, choosing white color could trick the eye into thinking the space is a bit larger.

Of course, everyone is different, so white may not be the best choice for some. Luckily, Sherwin-Williams makes plenty of off-white, warm white, and cool white paints, which you can find here.

Remember, many design experts recommend neutral or soft hues for bedroom walls, so the lighter, the better.

What Is The Most Popular White Sherwin-Williams Paint?

If you want to go ahead with white bedroom walls, Sherwin-Williams offers what come designers call their holy grail.

This ever-loved shade is named ‘Pure White SW 7005‘ and is one of the brands’ top-selling paints.

A nice detail about the Sherwin-Williams website is that they offer “Expert Picks,” which can help guide you to the best color/formula for your space.

For example, if you need to find white wall paint on their site, the experts recommend:

  • White Snow
  • White Sand
  • Natural White
  • Gypsum

These are just four of their top picks for a white room, so you’re bound to find one that fits your style. Again, there’s a reason so many people trust Sherwin-Williams products.

You also want to choose paints that clean easily and last long. Luckily, most Sherwin-Williams products fall into this category, so the little details guide you to an exact product line.

How Long Does Sherwin-Williams Paint Last?

You can usually expect Sherwin-Williams interior paint to last anywhere from five to ten years. Of course, this depends on your home’s climate, upkeep, and the formula of your paint.

According to All Paint And Carpentry, your Sherwin-Williams interior paint can theoretically last upwards of a decade if you prepare your walls beforehand.

On top of that, many Sherwin-Williams products include a built-in primer, which makes your job even easier. For example, the brand’s Emerald, Duration, SuperPaint, and Cashmere lines have built-in primers.

You can also expect these collections to last seven-plus years if you take good care of your walls, so you don’t need to repaint often.

So, although Sherwin-Williams is a bit pricey, it certainly gives you value for your money.

Is Sherwin-Williams Interior Paint Expensive?

You can generally expect to spend some money on your Sherwin-Williams interior paint. Since most of their lines retail at around $65 per gallon, your final price tag can add up quickly.

With that said, the brand does offer a less expensive option with its ‘Captivate’ line. This specific formula retails for around $40 on their website, which is a pretty good deal compared to Emerald (around $95) or Duration (around $75).

As we said, Sherwin-Williams is a premium-quality brand, so with that comes higher pricing.

You also want to consider how long your interior paint from this company will last. If it’s upwards of five to ten years, $65 per gallon doesn’t seem so bad.

However, that doesn’t mean you need to opt for the most expensive line from them, but a higher price tag generally comes with better long-term results.

What Sheen Should Bedroom Wall Paint Be?

One of the best paint sheens for a bedroom is satin. Think of satin paint as less glossy than semi-gloss but shinier than eggshell options.

In general, satin interior paints will be easy to clean and won’t scuff/scratch as quickly as matte formulas. Although many confuse eggshell for satin and vice versa, satin paint tends to be hardier.

The key is finding a sheen that reflects light but doesn’t look too shiny or cheap.

According to Consumer Reports, many satin paints are also fine for trim, as they’ll be durable enough to handle everyday wear and tear.

That can save you an extra trip to the store and money on paint for your project.

Circling back to Sherwin-Williams ‘SuperPaint’ collection, you can find satin sheens on their website here. Again, most Sherwin-Williams collections offer semi-gloss and satin options, so you shouldn’t have trouble finding the perfect one for your bedroom.

Is Matte Paint Good For The Bedroom?

Although matte paint isn’t necessarily bad for the bedroom, it isn’t always practical. As we covered above, using paint with gloss can help your bedroom stay beautiful for longer.

Typically, matte finishes aren’t strong enough to resist staining, chipping, or cleaning.

Therefore, having the walls in your bedroom matte can mean more touching-up and repainting. On the other hand, if you want to paint the ceilings in your bedroom a matte/eggshell sheen, that is completely fine.

Many home designers use matte/less glossy paint on the ceiling, which helps with glare. Even though you want to reflect light through your space, it doesn’t mean it needs to be sunglass-inducing.

So, for higher areas you won’t come in contact with, we recommend matte paint, while high-traffic sections of your bedroom should be a bit glossier.

How Much Does It Cost To Repaint A Bedroom?

If you’re trying to put a budget together for your bedroom repainting project, expect to spend between $350 and $850. Depending on the paint you buy, this number can become much larger.

Especially if you want to use Sherwin-Williams, your bedroom painting project could be a bit more than $350 in total. The size of your room also affects this final price tag.

For example, a main/primary bedroom is much larger than a guest suite, meaning your paint could cost you more than $1,000.

It’s also essential to figure out whether you want to hire someone or paint yourself. Naturally, a DIY paint job will be significantly less than having a professional come over, although the results may not be as good.

If you’re redoing multiple bedrooms, you might be able to negotiate a deal on paint, but this depends on the store and brand.

To Wrap Things Up

Whether you need to repaint your bedroom or another person’s, it’s always good to come up with a plan.

From what we found, Sherwin-Williams makes plenty of great bedroom paints, including various colors from their Cashmere, Duration, SuperPaint, and Emerald lines.

Specifically, colors like Snowbound, Neutral Ground, Slumber Sloth, and Pavestone are popular among Sherwin-Williams customers.

The key is choosing a semi-glossy or satin finish and a color that gives your room a peaceful, calm feeling. With that said good luck painting!

A well-chosen color solution plays a decisive role in interior design. There are no clear recommendations in what color to paint the walls.

When choosing shades, it is best to take into account the style, personal preferences and character of the room.

Meaning of colors in the interior

With certain skills, this can be done by hand. It is better to imagine in advance what the bedroom should be like. If a dilemma arises in what color to paint the walls in the bedroom, then it should be borne in mind that the room is primarily used for relaxation, and aggressive tones will be inappropriate here. The colors are usually dominated by pink, beige, vanilla shades.

If it is necessary to highlight the furniture and decor, the color scheme of the bedroom should be in light, pastel colors. Personal preference goes a long way in determining what colors to paint your bedroom.

The effect of color in the bedroom must also be taken into account. In many ways, this determines what colors should be in the bedroom. The combination of shades will make the interior more harmonious. Bright colors will look annoying, but you can use them to accentuate one of the walls. It is necessary to determine what color to paint the wall in the bedroom. For example, the red surface will become an accent element of the interior. In this case, the main background of the room can be in beige, light pink or white.

You should take into account the nuances of the psycho-emotional influence of color on a person when deciding which colors to paint the walls in the bedroom.

Combination of style and color palette

The style of the room also matters. At the same time, it is important not only in what colors to paint the room, but also not to disturb the harmony of style. In an interior designed in a minimalist direction, cold colors of the walls in the bedroom are preferred: pale blue, gray, white.

Simplicity in design is welcomed, a minimum of decor. As an option, photos in laconic frames or without them at all. Sculptures in monochrome colors, clear forms will perfectly fit into the interior. Moreover, sculptures should not be made of plaster.

Minimalism in decor and finishing materials is characterized by metal or glass.

What color to make a baroque bedroom? This design is multi-layered. It is better to adhere to this principle in color design. You must select at least 3 colors. The color of the walls in the bedroom is usually done in noble colors: burgundy, red, gold, walnut, emerald, brown. This must be kept in mind when deciding what colors to paint the walls.

The style is royal. Pictures or photos must be framed in massive, carved frames. Gypsum sculptures will fit perfectly into the interior. The decor also contains plaster decor: stucco, bas-relief, figurines. Sculptures should organically fit into the style of the interior.

Make your own original photo frame out of plaster. This will require an empty plastic food container. Pour diluted gypsum into it and let it dry for a day. Decorate it with acrylic paints and open it with varnish. The photo is cut out in the shape of a frame and glued on double-sided tape or PVA glue. Using special forms, you can also sculpt a plaster sculpture with your own hands.

Handmade always adds sophistication to the interior and demonstrates the owners’ love for art.

Antique style is quite popular. First you need to think about what color the bedroom should be. It is characterized by warm, soft shades. If you make repairs with your own hands, then give preference to colors in beige, azure, white, olive tones, ivory. Choose these shades when determining what colors to paint the bedroom.

Plaster decoration and decoration are often used in decoration: frescoes, stucco moldings, sculptures.

The color of the walls in the bedroom in the Empire style should be calm and not disturb the atmosphere of the interior. The décor exudes elegance. The interior is complemented by plaster sculptures in the spirit of Hellas.

In a modern bedroom style, you can choose any shade of the walls. You can rely on your taste. If you are a do-it-yourselfer, this makes the job much easier. The interior can be customized to suit your needs. The main thing is to be practical and fresh ideas. Some decorative elements are quite realistic to do with your own hands.

Provence style is characterized by light, translucent tones. Delicate shades are ideal for decoration: pink, blue, white.

Feng Shui colors

Shades are important for the emotional state of a person. It is necessary to take this into account when determining which color will be best for the bedroom. Feng Shui will help you with this.

Feng Shui green has a calming effect. It is optimal to use its derivative shades: olive, pistachio, light green.

Cool feng shui colors: blue, white, purple, promote comfort and sound sleep.

Bright colors: red, orange, yellow, according to Feng Shui, on the contrary, act exciting. It’s hard to sleep in this room.

According to Feng Shui, the bedroom should be decorated in pastel colors: pink, blue, green. This range gives a feeling of peace and comfort. Gray, although it is preferred, is boring in Feng Shui.

According to Feng Shui, the color in the bedroom is not the only thing that needs to be emphasized. The room should not contain plants, old things and too much furniture.

How to paint the walls in the hall?

The design of the walls in the hall depends on the location of the room. Before making a choice in what color to paint the walls, you need to pay attention to this.

For a north-facing room, warm tones are suitable. A brightly lit room on the south side should be painted in cold tones. If light prevails Как правило, этот термин сопровождается обычными для цвета определениями (так как цветовую гамму называют теплой, горячей, холодной, яркой, блеклой, светлой и т.д.)”> color scheme then with its help you can correct the proportions of the room.

If you are decorating with your own hands, choose darker or warmer colors for the side walls. Thus, the elongated room will expand and decrease in length. To do this, you need to decide on the color in which to paint the walls in the hall.

For spacious rooms, yellow, blue, gold, gray-green tones are suitable.

For a small room, more saturated shades are allowed: peach, purple, azure. A combination of milky and brown will make the hall respectable and elegant.

Taking into account the design of the room, it is necessary to choose the colors that best suit the interior. Bold combinations of brown and lilac or brown and blue are characteristic of fusion or eclectic styles.

For a Scandinavian style, calm pastel colors create a feeling of comfort and spaciousness. The classic design is characterized by the use of beige and brown.

Design nuances

According to Feng Shui, there should be a rule of 5 elements in the hall. But it is not recommended to do this with a color scheme. Bright colors are appropriate for decorating the hall according to Feng Shui, but flashy tones should still be avoided.

Do not focus on one of the elements by painting one wall in a catchy color.

Decorating a room with your own hands, do not forget that paintings, sculptures, photos should be in harmony with the style of the room. If the emphasis is on the setting, then the design of the walls should be a couple of tones lighter. It is better to consider the meaning of color and individual preferences. The color of the walls in the hall should be restrained, but at the same time create positive emotions.

A well-chosen range of shades and their combination will not only create a special mood, but can also change the size of the room.

Children’s bedroom color: the most popular shades + photo

From this material you will learn:

  • How the color of the room affects the development of the child
  • The most popular colors of the children’s bedroom
  • Successful color combinations in the children’s bedroom
  • Recommendations and nuances, what color to choose for a children’s bedroom
  • Children’s bedroom feng shui color

The color of the children’s bedroom is a very important nuance in the interior of the room. The psyche of the child, being actively developing, is extremely susceptible to external factors, so the choice of the most suitable shade for him cannot be ignored.

Giving preference to this or that color, one must understand that it can affect the child both excitingly and calmingly. Therefore, if you want to know which tones are best to choose depending on the gender, age and temperament of the baby, read on.

How the color of the room affects the development of the child

Psychologists have long been saying that the color of the interior of the nursery affects the development of the child. Now this is a scientifically proven fact. That is why color is the first factor to consider when choosing the design of a children’s room.

Our thinking is so arranged that it is affected by what we see. And the child’s body is only developing, therefore, the color scheme has a direct impact on the subconscious. This means that the chosen shades for your child’s room can change his mood, behavior, and even shape some character traits. Let’s look at the meaning of colors for children of different age groups.

It is important to note that it is the tone of the walls that mainly influences the child’s behavior. If your little son or daughter has changed after the renovation, reconsider the color scheme in the interior of their room.

Infant color perception

Newborns have poor color perception. In addition, their vision is not yet fully formed. But the bright color of the children’s bedroom wallpaper can provoke capricious behavior, and often frighten the child. Therefore, for the walls it is worth choosing light and calm tones. This rule must be observed for the rooms of children under the age of 3 years.

The interior of a children’s bedroom is best decorated in discreet colors that bring peace and tenderness. The kid has just begun to get acquainted with the new world, and the surrounding shades should create a warm atmosphere, and not act as an external irritant.

As a child grows, their needs change. Including the semantic and educational value of color increases.

Shades for an older child

When your child is between 4 and 11 years old, it’s worth looking into brighter shades to decorate his room. This is an active period of development and knowledge of the world around. The correct color palette will act in this case as an additional stimulant for the child’s brain.

Choose a rich color scheme that will evoke feelings of joy and encourage fun play.

Dark colors are out of place here. They can have a bad effect on the child, make him more sad and less mobile.

Matching colors for teenagers

Although adolescence begins at different times for all children, it has certain features that are characteristic of many: unexpected irritability, contradictory behavior, attempts to prove one’s adulthood.

Let’s take the average figure – 11 years as a basis. At this age, the color needs of the child change. He is getting older and it is necessary to transform the interior of his room.

It is worth noting that dark colors will not work here either. An excellent option for a teenage bedroom would be a complex wall design, a combination of several shades at once. Color separation by gender will look good. Girls will like pink, lilac, peach tones. Blue, blue, green shades are perfect for boys.

The most popular colors of the children’s bedroom

  1. Green.

Many associate green with nature and tranquility. It’s great for helping you relax. It can be used in the interior of the room of both a fidget and a less active child. Green tones provide sound healthy sleep, in addition, scientifically proven that they have a positive effect on the heart and respiratory system. Green is indispensable if you want to decorate a room in a certain theme. Make, for example, a fairy forest, a zoo, a football field or much more.

  2. Yellow . The color of the sun improves mood and has a positive effect on the intellect. But do not forget that, like other bright colors, it should be used as an additional element of decor. But pale yellow will look good in the background, it has a particularly beneficial effect on shy children.
  3. Blue and light blue. Children’s bedrooms in blue pacify, relieve emotional stress and help to concentrate. Such shades are used in the interior of the rooms of restless children. Blue tones are also relaxing, but their excessive presence in the decor of the nursery can cause the child to be inattentive. It is best to use this range only in the gaming area.
  4. Red. Red stimulates intellectual activity, improves mood and increases brain activity. It is very important to observe the measure here, because in this room the baby will not only play and study, but also relax. The predominance of red elements, such as heavy curtains or other textiles, can disrupt a child’s healthy sleep. Make small accents in the interior bright in the children’s bedroom (a vase or a table lamp shade).
  5. Orange. Orange, like yellow, gives the child energy and sets up communication. In addition, it can perfectly wake up the appetite, so it is suitable for children who are difficult to feed. It is worth noting that an excessive amount of orange in the interior excites the child’s psyche too much, so this color must be combined with shades of a more restrained, neutral palette.
  6. Purple, lilac. These colors themselves are very bright, so they overwork the unformed child’s psyche, the child becomes restless and distracted. They don’t need to be mainstream. It is better to use only light and pastel shades of purple and lilac in the interior.
  7. Pink. This color is primarily used by parents for their daughters’ bedrooms. It calms, sets in a positive way, reduces irritability, raises self-esteem. It should be noted that it is suitable for both little dreamers and fidgets, as it can calm them down a bit.
  8. White and beige. White children’s bedroom is associated with cleanliness, peace and light. In addition, such a room will visually look larger, as if creating the effect of freedom and weightlessness. Also, a bright nursery can be safely diluted with bright decorative trifles. White and beige colors energize, help to restore strength, add confidence and help to concentrate. This is what makes a bright interior the number one choice among parents.
  9. Grey. Gray color is undeservedly associated with boredom. But it must be said that, like any shade, it has its advantages: it calms and increases confidence. In addition, gray goes well with other colors, thanks to which the room can be supplemented with a variety of bright elements.
  10. Brown. All shades of brown make the room warm and cozy. Such a children’s bedroom will give your baby a feeling of serenity and comfort. Add elements of other shades to the interior, and the room will look interesting, and the child will be active and cheerful.

    Children’s bedroom feng shui color

In Chinese, feng shui means “wind and water”. This is one of the ancient Chinese philosophies, the purpose of which is to direct the flow of qi energy in the right direction, to create a harmonious environment, the so-called shen-qi balance. Making the room as suitable as possible for the child is the main task of every parent who decorates the nursery according to Feng Shui. If the space is properly energetically balanced, then children will grow up confident, self-possessed and purposeful.

    Room location

According to Feng Shui theory, the east is responsible not only for physiological growth, but also for the development of a person’s personal qualities. In addition, the energies located in the east affect the development of creativity and health. That is why in China children are located in the eastern part of the dwelling, whether it is a house or an apartment.

In addition, it is important that one of the walls of the child’s room is combined with the parents’ bedroom. This will add strong parental energy to the baby, give a sense of security.

    Active-passive

Of course, children like everything bright and conspicuous. In feng shui, active is yang and passive is yin. Let the color of the walls be juicy in the children’s bedroom, let the furniture attract attention on the floor, stylish posters or posters hang on the walls. Use a yang tone for this. Thus, the feng shui nursery can be brighter than the parents’ bedroom.

Girl’s bedroom should be in warm colors – orange, brown. Boys will like cool colors – gray, blue. For babies and children under the age of 7, you can safely choose bright colors, there are practically no restrictions on colors.

A child’s bedroom should not only have the right colors, but also be modern and equipped. Do not let any corner lose to the rest of the interior. Add various active elements to the design – rotating bells, bird cages, moving toys. Clock-clocks will fit very well into the interior.

If your child is overly active, choose warm soft colors and rid the room of all objects and things that can provoke the child to constantly change position. The interior should contribute to his calmness, and not interfere. Use indoor flowers for decoration. They bring positive energy into the space. Choose plants with dense foliage that looks up. Do not forget about the order in the children’s bedroom. Teach your child to it. Disorder can also affect the psyche as an additional stimulus. Install toy storage cabinets that close tightly.

Do not litter the space in the nursery with unnecessary things. All items in the room must be used, otherwise they lead to stagnation of energy, which negatively affects the mood and general well-being of the baby.

Changes are best started with small steps. You don’t have to drastically change everything in your own home. To get started, simply move the furniture or change the wallpaper in the children’s bedroom. Carefully analyze your child’s behavior. Only if everything is in order, continue the changes in the same direction. Good luck!

  • Enamel has a distinct gloss due to the lacquer base, used for painting any surfaces indoors and outdoors. Protects against corrosion, resistant to light and damp environments.
  • Emulsion paints

Economical in application, other types of paints can be used over them, they do not have an unpleasant odor.

    • Acrylic applied to well dried walls, suitable for painting walls in rooms with low humidity. Gives in to a good tinting, keeps the color and under the sun. It does not allow steam and moisture to pass through, it is better than others resistant to mechanical stress.
    • Latex resistant to washing and friction, dries quickly, hides small cracks, used for painting wallpaper, plaster, brick. May change color when exposed to sunlight.
    • Aqueous emulsion loses brightness over time due to color washout, suitable for creating relief and texture, has high strength and hides small cracks, reinforcing them.
    • Silicone based on silicone resins has high plasticity, forms a waterproof film, hides small cracks, can be applied to any surface. It is compatible with other emulsion paints and does not allow the development of bacteria.

What color to paint the walls in the bedroom

    Contents of the article

Bedroom design is often left as a project due to budget constraints and lack of free time. Often, when repairing an entire house or apartment, “hands” do not reach the bedroom. Needless to say, most bedrooms don’t feel like a complete relaxation room or an intimate romantic nest. As a rule, this is a standard room in which you want to fall asleep quickly with the idea that it would be nice to decorate the ceiling, hang a chic triptych of erotic themes, and buy new curtains.

In such a bedroom, where the atmosphere causes dissatisfaction and reflections on the coming sleep, there is no question of quality rest. To put the bedroom in order does not need to invest a lot of money, time and effort. Decorate a space full of harmony and tranquility with color decor ideas that will certainly inspire you.

How would you like your bedroom walls to be? Spectacular whites, noble browns, energetic yellows? The whole palette is at your service, but we will focus on non-traditional colors and combinations that are not often used by designers, but create a unique atmosphere. This bedroom design will not only transform the room, but also your mood.

    Joyful yellow

Bedroom decoration does not have to be extravagant and pretentious to be truly luxurious and comfortable. Try to create a unique decor with yellow shades.

The yellow gamma fills the space with joy and freshness, just like early spring daffodils fill the house with the aromas of renewal, setting you up for romance. Yellow will perfectly decorate the walls of the room, giving the room a bold brightness or a soft sunny aura.

If the walls of your room are painted yellow, then all textiles should have a soft neutral tones, but clear patterns of texture on the surface. To enhance the play of patterns on fabrics, sconces on the wall will help to support the overall decor.

    Emerald Green

Traditional green can be used in a new design. Eco-style, which is offered in the “grass green” range, in emerald tones “sounds” more sophisticated and elegant. At the same time, the functions of color are fully preserved: you get a peaceful positive atmosphere that will help you relax, fall asleep easily and wake up cheerful and fresh in the morning.

Experiment with your surroundings by adding yellow to your furniture and decor. In this case, the room will glow with the energy of youth. Blue textiles and accessories in combination with emerald walls will create the effect of a “forest” abode or paradise on the sea coast. Natural emerald makes a great backdrop anyway, as it pairs well with all other colors, including wood textures.

Black without a hint of drama

Chic deep shades of the noir theme, as a rule, evoke not too favorable emotions. But not in this case. No hint of gloom: the black walls of the bedroom are a great backdrop for wall painting in an oriental or Scandinavian style. Even works of art: paintings, frame photos and installations will look rich and impressive against the background of black walls.

This is a real imperial style. Ink-black matte walls and ceilings can create another magical look if you dilute the space with warm wood, shiny metal, living plants and yellow light.

This “night sky” will balance the atmosphere so much that you will immediately feel light and free after a hard day’s work, and all problems will melt away in this “space”. For youth bedrooms, a creative solution is suitable, which European designers are happy to use. Black paint is perfect for the bedroom, but it can make the room appear smaller.

To prevent this from happening, paint one wall or two adjacent walls black, and hang posters with fluorescent pictures on the other. Fluorescent accents seem to be made for this “night”, as their soft glow contributes to creating a stunning atmosphere. You can draw your own drawings on the black walls yourself.

    Pink or burgundy?

Romance in the bedroom is achieved by using red shades. The real favorites among other shades that should fill the room are pink and burgundy.

These colors contribute to the harmonization of intimate relationships, the establishment of relationships. A selection of soft, muted pinks and burgundy hues will add a touch of romance and sensuality.

A dark rose color or a soft burgundy tone will fill the room with a flame of passion without overwhelming the space. Pair it with white trim for a brighter, bolder design. Dark wood furniture completes the style of a cozy intimate corner.

    Soothing blue

Soothing style for those who want to quickly plunge into the softness of the pillows and the cleanliness of the sheets at the end of the day. A soft shade of blue, which is one of the calmest colors, you can easily use to create such a room. Cool blue color gives a feeling of cleanliness and contributes to the reign of peace.

If the goal of your bedroom design is to create a place for relaxation, then consider this natural celestial shade, which will bring you as close to nature as possible. Blue color is rich in various variations. You can choose, for example: 1. cornflower blue; 2. muted azure; 3. sage green; 4. aquamarine.

    Antique White

White is a classic color often used to create the illusion of a clean and open space.

White paint provides more contrast with the dark floor, giving the illusion of a larger room. You should beware of too much whiteness in the space so that the room does not resemble a hospital ward. White paint is best used in a wide range of options.

“Antique” white is a light gray paint with a slight yellow pigment, in which the pure white is only slightly overshadowed by a gray tone.

“Antique” is similar to white and gray paint, but unlike them, it does not bring a feeling of boredom and sadness. Ideal for those who want to create a bohemian bedroom where you can tune in to rest, relax and forget about problems. Feel yourself immersed in the royal chambers, which are filled with a sense of stability and steadfastness.

Antique walls complement natural cherry floors and matching furniture. However, to avoid visual fluctuations in the appearance of the paint, only yellow lighting should be used.

    Rainbow mood

Of course, pure and traditional colors are more familiar to our eyes. But contrasting colors are harmonious. Seemingly opposites, yellow and purple look good together as they differ in tone – purple is darker than yellow, so a natural balance is obtained.

Mixing contrasting colors is an art, which is embodied in a new technique of wall decoration – “fading”. When painting walls using this technique, spectacular smooth transitions are obtained. You can use one color in three shades or 3 colors closely spaced in a classic color palette. Coloring is made from a dark shade to a light one. The result is simply amazing.

Gradient or iridescent walls in the bedroom will fill the space with the “breath of life” and the play of colors. Such a color scheme will make the space stylish and original. In such a bedroom you will feel confident and relaxed. In the evening you will feel a surge of inspiration, and wake up happy in the morning, because a room full of invisible movement of color will orient you towards new achievements.

    Walls with stripes

The simplest design to decorate a bedroom is based on basic straight lines. Stripes in all variations will make the bedroom very modern, dynamic. Horizontal and vertical stripes, jagged and smooth lines, multi-colored and solid colors can decorate a room with one condition. Strips should be applied to only one wall of the room. The remaining surfaces should be painted in a suitable tone.

Soft horizontal stripes is the most common design. First, drawing horizontal stripes is very easy. Secondly, such a pattern will make a small room larger. Vertical stripes will make a low ceiling appear higher. If you want to shift the focus to vertical stripes, then make them thin.

The geometry of the stripes may not be as important as the color. One wide pink stripe in a green or black bedroom will make an unusual accent, refresh the room. A brown striped accent wall in the bedroom completes the minimalist style.

Want some glam in your bedroom? Paint gently shimmery metallic stripes on the wall. For rustic bedrooms, decorate one wall near the headboard with horizontal woodgrain stripes. When it comes to choosing paint colors for bedrooms, don’t get caught up in the latest design trends.

There are a huge number of shades, but the fact is that most of them will not be a good choice for a bedroom. After all, your bedroom is the abode of love and relaxation, so the color you choose should be based on your personal orientations, perceptions.

Beautiful colors for the bedroom create the right mood. But overall harmony is achieved through thoughtful decoration and wise design. Using the right color can make your bedroom warm, dramatic, sensual, relaxing. You should rely on those paint colors that seem serene to you. When choosing a paint color for a bedroom, choose one for the walls, one for the ceiling, and another for the trim to give the room contrast and dimension.

Colors are an exciting aspect of the bedroom, so wake up the interior designer in you! Create your original and cozy bedroom of your dreams.

How to paint walls and ceilings with water-based paint: technology and steps

There are many finishing materials on the construction market, but water-based paint holds a leading position. This is dictated by its competitive advantages :

    • The absence of odors and toxic impurities makes the coating safe and harmless.

    • The paint dries quickly.

    • You can get any color by mixing a primary white with a color scheme.

    • If you use a textured roller when painting, you can imitate the pattern of expensive designer wallpapers.

    • To use a water emulsion, special knowledge and skills are not needed.

    • If you stain the surface, splashes can be easily washed off with water.

    • The paint has high decorative characteristics: it creates a pleasant matte finish that does not glare and is not erased.

    • The addition of various substances to the paint increases its wear resistance.

In the article we will talk about how to paint various surfaces with a water-based emulsion correctly and without streaks. We will also reveal little secrets that will help you make repairs quickly and accurately.

Painting with water-based paint: basic steps

When describing the sequence of work, we assume that you have already prepared the surface: cleaned it of oil, alkyd or synthetic materials, removed old wallpaper and whitewash. You have already plastered, puttied and primed the walls, or applied facing material: wallpaper or cork boards. Only under these conditions, the paint will lie evenly, will last a long time and will not peel off.

Ideally, 3-4 weeks should elapse between plastering and painting. Otherwise, plaster particles can change the intensity of the coloring pigment.

First step: choose shade, tools and prepare the room

When choosing a paint, there are three options for action. You can purchase ready-made goods of the desired color, tint the paint yourself or order tinting from specialists. In the first case, everything is simple: choose the color you like and paint.

If you chose tinting at home , consider the following nuances:

    • You will need a drill and a mixer attachment to mix the pigments. It’s not possible to do this by hand.

    • Accurately calculate the amount of paint. If it is not enough, there is a chance that you will not get exactly the same shade during subsequent mixing.

    • The tone of the paint in the wet state and after drying are different. To check if there is enough color, we advise you to paint a small board and wait until the surface dries.

The advantage of tinting by specialists is that the computer already takes into account the percentage change in color shade after drying. Therefore, you will definitely get the color you wanted.

If you want to visually enlarge the space, paint the wall near the window 1-2 tones lighter than the rest.

In addition to paint, you will need: paint roller, brush for hard-to-reach places and cuvette (bath). Professional painters use a spray gun, but the tools we have listed are enough for home repairs.

Choose a roller of medium length and with a short pile. To prevent lint from the roller on the surface, run it 2-3 times on the sticky side of the molar tape. The hair will remain on the tape, and you do not have to worry about the quality of the coating. If you plan to make the room colorful, buy several rollers. Otherwise, there is a risk that the colors will mix.

After you have chosen a shade and bought the tools, you need to take care of the shelter of the room. Although the water-based paint is easy to wash off, it is better to protect nearby surfaces from drops in advance. Cover the room with plastic wrap or newspapers. It is necessary to cover approximately 1.5 m of the area. That is, if you need to paint a small section of the wall, you should cover 1.5 meters to the sides and on the floor. Then definitely not a single drop will get past. Paste the joint of the wall and ceiling, skirting boards, sockets and switches with masking tape.

Main stage: technology for painting various surfaces

The main requirements for the room where the repair work is carried out: the absence of drafts and the temperature is within 5-30 degrees, otherwise the paint will lie unevenly. Humidity should not exceed 65% so that the coating dries quickly.

The water emulsion is quite thick, so it is recommended to dilute it with water. Manufacturers on the packaging indicate the desired proportions. If there are no instructions, add 10% liquid of the total volume of paint.

Mix thoroughly. If doing this by hand, and not with a construction mixer, stir for 5-6 minutes. Be sure to touch the day of the container when mixing, as the coloring pigments are heavy and settle quickly.

Always mix the paint before starting work, even if the break was no more than an hour.

Now let’s move on to painting. We will give tips how to paint the surface with a water-based emulsion evenly and without streaks:

    • Pour the paint into the tray and saturate the nap of the roller well with it. To check if all the fibers are saturated with pigment, roll the roller on cardboard or board, the paint should lie flat, without gaps.

    • Dip the roller into the cuvette and run it over the ribbed part several times to remove excess.

    • Start painting from the lighter parts of the room to the darker ones, that is, from the window.

    • Move from top to bottom so that drops and smudges do not remain on an already painted surface.

    • Apply paint up or down in parallel stripes. You can not paint diagonally or in a zigzag pattern: there will be stains.

    • At a time, try to paint 1 sq.m. Moving in this way, you can apply the paint quickly and without visible joints.

    • Do not stop working until you paint the entire room on one layer, otherwise the joints will be visible.

    • While the layer dries, wrap the painting tools in plastic. This will prevent the paint from drying out. So you can leave the brush and roller for a day. If you hold it longer, the paint on the pile will already begin to dry out, and it will be inconvenient to apply it to the walls.

To get a uniform monochromatic coating, paint in two, and preferably three layers. Do not try to carefully paint over every meter at a time: color transitions will be visible. Paint the room, and after 1.5-2 hours, when the coating dries, apply a second layer. So the paint consumption will be minimal, and the coating will turn out to be of high quality.

How to paint wallpaper: the subtleties of painting

If wallpaper is pasted in the room for painting, consider a few points:

    • After gluing the wallpaper, at least 48 hours must pass so that the wallpaper does not move away from the wall under the action of the water-based emulsion.

    • Use a velor roller.

Otherwise, painting wallpaper is no different from applying paint to walls. The main thing is to do everything carefully and not interrupt the work so that there are no streaks and color transitions.

How to paint a ceiling with water-based paint

The technology of painting the ceiling has nuances that you should pay attention to:

    • To make the coverage even, move as follows: a few vertical strokes, then horizontal and again vertical.
