My clients knew their house didn’t match their modern Scandinavian style. Located in South Charlotte in an older, well-established community, Sara and Ash had big dreams for their home. During our virtual consultation, I learned a lot about this couple and their style. Ash is a woodworker and business owner; Sara is a realtor so they needed help pulling a vision together to combine their styles. We looked over their Pinterest boards where I began to envision their mid-century, meets modern, meets Scandinavian, meets Japanese garden, meets Monterey style. I told you I love making each exterior unique to each homeowner!

The backyard was top priority for this family of 4 with a big wish-list. Sara and Ash were looking for a she-shed for Sara’s Peleton workouts, a fire pit area to hangout, and a fun and functional space that was golden doodle-friendly. They also envisioned a custom tree house that Ash would create for their 3-year-old, and an artificial soccer field to burn some energy off. I gave them a vision for the back sunroom area that would be converted into the woodworking shop for Ash to spend time perfecting his craft.

Housed within the building is a multi-functioning space along with kitchen, storage and shower room. The use of timber continues here, with walls clad in a warm, natural, birch-plywood. The mirror at the rear of the kitchen reflects the ever-changing planting outside, providing a sense of space and depth. This, along with a rooflight, and small, planted courtyard, bring additional natural light into the space and make the garden an integral part of the building.

Cedar Garden Office

This sleek garden office was built for a client in West Sussex who wanted to move their home office out of the house and into the garden. In order to meet our brief of providing a contemporary design, we included Western Red Cedar cladding. This softwood cladding has beautiful tones of brown, red and orange. The sliding doors and full length window allow natural light to flood in to the room, whilst the desk height window offers views across the garden.
We can add an area of separate storage to all of our garden room builds. In the case of this structure, we have hidden the entrance to the side of the building and have continued the cedar cladding across the door. As a result, the room is concealed but offers the storage space needed. The interior of the storage is ply-lined, offering a durable solution for garden storage on the garden room.

Concetti

The original concept for this space came from the idea that this modern glass greenhouse would be built around an old wooden shed still standing beneath the trees. The “shed” turned Powder Room would of course be new construction, but clever materiality – white washed reclaimed vertical panelling – would make it appear as though it was a treasure from many years before.
