The best paint trends are one of the hottest topics in interior design at the moment. Bold, brave and beautiful room color schemes are redefining the way we see color, but where to start when it comes to choosing the best paint for your space?

When it comes to refreshing our homes with color, it takes careful consideration and expertise to choose a paint palette that is timeless and enduring. Applying a new lick of paint to your walls is an excellent way to give your interiors a fresh-faced makeover. But which color sample pots should you be buying, and what are the biggest paint trends for 2022?

The top paint trends 2022

We’ve teamed up with a host of color experts to bring you the most exciting paint trends in the year ahead. Brushes at the ready…

1. Create calm with blue

Fresh and inviting, blue is certainly worthy of its place in the spotlight. There are endless shades of blue room ideas for all your color trend and room color needs. Many blues have their own beneficial qualities but there’s nothing quite like sky blue – a mood-lifting hue that is ideal for quiet spaces, reading rooms and even outdoor spaces.

‘We love this color for being neither loud nor cold – it adds an instant freshness to outdoor spaces.’ says Ruth Mottershead, creative director, Little Greene .

2. Beautify with soft lilac

Lilac, especially at the lighter end of the scale, can be used as a softer, more romantic version of grey so if you want a look that feels clean and unfussy but with a little character, this is your ‘go to’ shade when thinking about room color schemes.

‘Lilac is a calming, comforting color, it makes you want to relax and stay in an interior longer.’ says Saffron Hare, creative director, James Hare . It is a hue that encourages quiet moments of contemplation.

3. Decorate with a barely-there beige-grey

(Image credit: Base Interior | Christopher Horwood)

It’s fair to say that we’ve been championing colorful interior schemes and bold decorating ideas for some time, but a neutral whole-house color scheme can enable beautiful architecture and decorative furniture to make a true style statement within your home.

When it’s comes home ideas and planning your scheme, it’s often best to consider the overall color palette of a room early on, this will assist with defining the other aspects within the space as the project moves forward.  For example, a neutral shade, like this beige-grey, may need to be paired with other materials to truly sing: timber, leather and marble work particularly well.

4. Warm up with earthy pinks

Earthy pinks – these natural hues, somewhere between red, pink and brown, conjure up warmth in any room and are reminiscent of late summer evening sunsets.

‘Rhubarb is my go-to color; added to a neutral scheme, it creates warmth, depth and a touch of the unexpected,’ says Georgie Wykeham, founder, Georgie Wykeham Designs . ‘Used on its own, it is a very easy color to live with and yet it also works beautifully with blues, greens, pinks and reds.’

5. Make a room feel grounded

(Image credit: Laura Stephens Interior Design)

While this rich caramel hue definitely belongs to the neutral color family, we think it packs a strong punch that blends well with natural materials, as well as patterned fabrics, to create a calm and relaxing space.

‘This sandy shade has such depth to it,’ says Laura Stephens, founder, Laura Stephens Interior Design . ‘It makes a room feel warm so is good for north-facing rooms and those that don’t get a lot of natural light. It works really well with both crisp whites and also colors closer in tone, such as burgundy and olive green. It also makes stronger colors like a royal blue pop against it. It’s so versatile.’

6. Inspire with orange paint trends

Vibrant and inviting, deep orange packs a pinch and is full of optimism and hope.

‘For me, the home should be filled with bright color trends and bold patterns as they add personality to a space,’ says ’ Emma Deterding, founder, Kelling Designs. ‘Orange shades are a great choice – they bring an uplifting feel during the day and can help create a cozy, relaxed atmosphere in the evening, showing how versatile this color is in different light.’

An orange entrance hall is a wonderful way to welcome people to a home. Here, the interior of the client’s antique Chinese lacquered cabinet inspired the glossy walls of this apartment. A strong sense of orange was carried throughout the scheme.

7.

Warm up with mid-brown taupe

(Image credit: Edward Bulmer Paint / Paul Whitbread)

Reminiscent of velvety cocoa, this mid-brown taupe is a striking color for any room. Depending on the furniture and accent color ideas introduced alongside, it has the flexibility to range from looking neat and tailored to soft and welcoming. Insiders reveal how to use it to best effect.

‘Timeless neutrals lend themselves to historic properties, creating warm backgrounds for original features,’ says Louise Wicksteed, design director, Sims Hilditch. ‘When opting for a neutral shade on the walls and ceiling, be playful with your soft furnishings and consider threading splashes of color and pattern through the fabric used for your scatter cushions.’

8. Escape with an ocean-inspired palette

Instantly energizing, an ocean hue offers a mental escape route from busy schedules and looming deadlines. It’s versatile, too: turn up the intensity with a gloss finish or subdue it in a flat matt.

‘Reminiscent of endless tropical skies and oceans, this color is full of vitality even on a grey day,’ says Tricia Guild, founder and creative director, Designers Guild.

‘Some consider blue room ideas to be cold (and it can be sometimes) but this powerful, punchy shade is anything but; rather it is enlivening in its strength. Use it with a white for crisp simplicity, make it dramatic with darker hues or take it to the Caribbean with pastel tones. It responds beautifully to sunlit rooms but looks equally stunning with low lighting and candlelight.’

9. Energize with yellow paint trends

(Image credit: Paint & Paper Library)

An earthy tobacco shade, this golden hue creates rooms that are rich, warm and inviting throughout the year – and it also allows artwork to pop out from the walls.

‘Yellow is a color that evokes happiness and provides a sense of positivity,’ says Andy Greenall, head of design, Paint & Paper Library. ‘It is perfect for areas of the home where there is much activity and socializing, such as the kitchen and dining room, where it adds energy and vitality.

It’s easier to incorporate this color into a scheme if you’re slightly put off by bright yellow paint in your home – and is particularly effective in darker, moodier spaces as it creates a feeling of warmth.

10. Ground your space with an earthy brown

Considered a dark neutral, earthy brown living room ideas are grounding but also has an elegance that is truly sophisticated. Versatile, it can be striking on its own or allow other hues to stand proud.

‘Don’t be scared to use dark colors in a small, gloomy room,’ says Natalie Forbes and Louisa Rix, co-founders, Forbes Rix Design. ‘It’s never going to look light, so choose a rich color and the effect can be truly transformative.’

Mike Fisher, creative director and founder, Studio Indigo agrees: ‘We believe north-facing rooms should be painted a dark or strong color, like brown, to make it more cocooning and those on the south side in lighter colors. The thinking is where you have darkness you should bring color, warmth and joy. ’ .

11. Decorate with an easy to live with grey

A grey that straddles the boundaries between blue, green and grey can be many things: front and centre or a background to show off art and objects. Easy to live with, it looks beautiful in west- or south-facing rooms while being suitably moody in spaces with less light.

‘I love using this sort of color on walls as it allows paintings and portraits to really sing out,’ says Anna Haines, founder, Anna Haines Design. ‘It feels both calming and quiet and also works as the ideal backdrop for a range of rich textiles, decorative antique rugs and furniture.’

12. Exude confidence with color

Mood-lifting and warm, yellow room ideas bring energy, confidence and optimism to a space. It can be used anywhere in the home but is particularly effective in busy spaces, such as hallways and kitchens, or north-facing rooms that lack light.

‘The kitchen, often seen as the heart of the home, is the perfect space to use bolder colors, such as Little Greene’s Giallo, reminiscent of golden sun, which will bring joy and create an energetic scheme,’ says Ruth Mottershead, creative director, Little Greene.

‘You can use this to highlight architectural details or pair it with soft greens and whites, such as the new shades Garden and Silent White, both by Little Greene, in the rest of the space, for a more elegant and pared-back scheme.’

13. Be inspired by the natural world

Green room ideas, inspired by the natural world, olive is restful with a touch of heritage. Strong yet soothing, it brings an enveloping feel but can also sit quietly and allow bold furniture to shine.

‘This is a wonderful color that works well all through the year and is ideal if you are trying to bring an element of nature or a heritage feel into a more contemporary city home,’ says Emma Sims-Hilditch, founder and creative director, Sims Hilditch. ‘It’s a restful and calming shade which not only works well on cabinetry but also looks great on walls.’

What’s more, green is generally considered the best color for a bedroom by paint experts for a calming, sleepy scheme.

14. Be drawn to the quite sophistication of pink

Pink room ideas the new decorating neutral – it has a natural ability to deliver warmth and interest without overwhelming a space. But choosing the right shade can be a thorny task when you’re faced with everything from soft rose pinks to peachy tones. The key is to pick a serene hue. Enter Potters Pink from Heritage by Dulux, a soft, clay-like shade that brings sophistication to a living space but is subtle enough for a calming bedroom. It complements most colors, but olive greens, rich browns and deep burgundy will truly make it sing.

15. Encourage creativity with purple

Purple room ideas are having something of a moment. Pantone, the global color authority for the design community, has announced a new blue shade, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri, a dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet red undertone as the Pantone Color of the Year selection for 2022.

Blending the faithfulness and constancy of blue with the energy and excitement of red, this happiest and warmest of all the blue hues introduces an empowering mix of newness.

‘As we move into a world of unprecedented change, the selection of Very Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue color family,’ says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute.

‘Encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time possessing a violet-red undertone, Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression.’

What colors will trend in 2022?

The colors that will trend in 2022 are noted to create calm and serenity – or evoke creativity and optimism. Pantone, the global color authority for the design community, has announced that purple and blue paint will play a huge role in our decorating choices. But while this vivid color is set to be pivotal, we also noticed many paint companies opting for more subdued neutral color palettes. Think taupes, beige and soft pinks.

A Fresh Paint Job Can Revamp Your Home

A new coat of paint is a fast and relatively easy way to revamp your home. Adding a pop of color, new undertones or a bold and trendy pattern will make a room look totally new. Here are some of the freshest paint color trends to tackle in 2022.

Dark Walls

Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams, says that “in general, darker, moodier colors are becoming popular for both the interior and exterior of the home.

Specifically, we are seeing lots of deep greens and navy hues gain popularity.” Her favorite? The timeless, versatile Naval SW 6244. Use it in the bedroom for the ultimate sleep space or in the kitchen for a farmhouse-chic cooking space.

But doesn’t dark paint make a room look small? To avoid a stuffy home, Teris Pantazes, CEO and co-founder of Settle Rite Home Repairs, recommends “keeping the darker colors to rooms that have higher ceilings and natural light and keeping the ceiling white.

Contrasting Trim

When everything is one color, a room can start to look bland and heavy. Playing with contrast is an easy way to keep things balanced and interesting.

If you have light interior and exterior walls, try painting your trim a dark, contrasting color. If your walls are dark, go light on the trim.

Wow-Worthy Accent Walls

Accent walls have been trending for years, but 2022 brings something new to this paint trend. Instead of a solid color, homeowners are opting for wild wallpaper, touchable textures, unique patterns, murals and more.

Paige NeJame, owner of South Shore CertaPro Painters, calls them “feature walls.” Because they provide more personality than a blank wall, they lessen the need for traditional artwork. NeJame says that the wall “becomes the art in the room. This gives the room interest while being minimal and simple.”

Painted Front Doors

If you love a pop of color, you’re in luck: Brightly painted doors are hot right now. Go bold with yellow or salmon, or stick to classics like burgundy and navy blue.

Considering your exterior color will help you choose the right hue for your door. Like with window trim, contrast is key. The fresh coat of paint will instantly boost your home’s curb appeal.

White on White

Bright, airy and clean are big trends this year. Monochromatic white will make your home look clean and calm. Plus, it can make low-light spaces seem larger and more welcoming.

There are plenty of shades to choose from, so whether you prefer warm or cool undertones, you’re sure to find the right white. “Simply White from Benjamin Moore is a popular color as it is a bit softer than a bright white,” says NeJame. Be careful not to choose a color that looks dingy.

Antimicrobial Paint

Sherri Monte, co-owner of Elegant Simplicity, an interior design and professional home organizing firm in Seattle, Wash., explains that “antimicrobial paint, like Sherwin-Williams’ Paint Shield, has an additive that makes whatever surface you paint resistant to bacteria and viruses.”

Defending against microbes is top of mind this year. However, the trend has some serious staying power because it also prevents mold and mildew. According to Monte, that “makes a big win in rooms that typically have high-moisture in the air like bathrooms or kitchens.”

Colored Kitchen Cabinets

Navy and gray cabinetry exploded in popularity alongside the farmhouse style trend. Now we’re seeing homeowners expand to more daring cabinet colors. Golden yellow, forest green, wine red, deep purple and robin egg blue are all up and coming cabinet paint trends.

Many of the new kitchen color palettes reference the 1950s, and those vintage appliance colors are back in style too.

Statement Ceiling

Painting your ceiling is a little more work than painting your walls, but the finished look is worth the effort. Like an accent wall, you can use a solid color, original pattern or texture to achieve an effect that is unique to you.

There are plenty of ways to make your ugly ceiling shine. A tongue and groove ceiling is one popular option.

Custom Tints

The trouble with trends is finding ways to stay original. Instead of buying the same shade of millennial pink as your favorite influencer, try custom tints like Fine Paints of Europe.

According to Kellie Sirna, co-founder of Studio 11 Design, custom paint colors allow you to “capture that beautiful vacation sunset you watched and live with it.” Sirna uses new trends tastefully in her 1970s home renovation, Tophill, to create a truly one of a kind space.

Custom tints are ideal for rooms with strong color palettes. You can use a sample of fabric or wallpaper to get the perfect match for your curtains and walls.

Latest Paint Color Trends In 2022

Paint is a powerful tool for changing the look and feel of a room. It can be used to brighten up a space, create a cozy atmosphere, or emphasize your favorite features. If you’re looking to freshen up your home this year, here are some of the latest paint color trends to consider. Whether you’re going for a cool or warm vibe, these colors will help you achieve the look you want.

Are you curious about the latest paint color trends for 2022?

If so, you’re in luck!

I went through the trending paint color lists of all the major paint companies and pulled out the most popular paint colors they’re all predicting will be big this year.

So whether you’re looking to freshen up your home’s décor or simply want to stay ahead of the curve, be sure to read on!

Of course, I don’t recommend picking a color just because it’s on this year’s list (it’ll likely be on your wall a lot longer than it’ll be trending).

However, if you happen to love one of this year’s colors, then it’s a great time to do that painting project you’ve been planning.

And if you’re making over a room, you’ll likely find there’s lots of accessories available in your colors, too. (That’s the one benefit of following the trends.) Which definitely makes re-decorating easier.

Let’s start with a summary of the 2022 paint color trends I found.

Similar to last year’s trends, many brands are looking to nature for their color inspiration. So greens, blues and even browns are showing up everywhere.

But this year, the big color is green (rather than blue). So if you love green, 2022 is your color year!

But blue lovers don’t despair. While blue is taking more of a back seat this year, there are still quite a few shades to choose from.

For the warm color lovers, deep red and golden yellow are also repeating from last year.

You’ll find bigger changes in the traditional neutral colors:

  • There are very few grays in this year’s selections (although many of the trending colors have a gray undertone).
  • Greiges are also not as popular as they have been in recent years.
  • Warmer neutrals such as off-white, beige and brown are the neutral paint colors of choice for 2022.

And finally the colors that have totally gone off the trending color list this year? Blush pink and purple. (Although Pantone has chosen a blue that definitely leans to the purple side, so all is not lost if you’re a purple lover!)

To get all the details, keep reading to see the colors of the year from all of the major paint companies and find out more about the latest color trends for 2022.

A note on pinning: The individual room pictures below were not taken by me so they cannot be pinned from my site. There are links to the original pages below each one, so please go there if you wish to pin the images.

1 | Gray green

By far the most popular paint color trend for 2022 is gray green.

Three major paint companies chose shades of it as their color of the year.

And almost every other company had at least one gray green in their trending colors list.

Benjamin Moore chose ‘October Mist’ for their 2022 color of the year.

It’s a light gray green that looks really pretty with lilac or pink.

But pairs quite well with most other colors.

And is perfect for a zen bathroom or calming bedroom retreat.

Sherwin Williams named ‘Evergreen Fog’ as their color of the year for 2022…a darker green that has a lot of gray in it. (I think it’s very appropriately named.)

It looks beautiful with other neutrals such as white, off-white and brown.

Another great choice for a relaxing bedroom. Or if you’re looking for a gray alternative that has a little more depth to it.

For a less gray version, try out PPG‘s 2022 color of the year called ‘Olive Sprig’.

They describe it as representing healing, regrowth and resiliency.

Which also makes it a good choice for any room where you want a calming influence.

1. Benjamin Moore ‘Morning Dew’ | 2. Benjamin Moore ‘October Mist’ | 3. Sherwin Williams ‘Evergreen Fog’ | 4. PPG ‘Olive Sprig’ | 5. Dunn-Edwards ‘Desert Sage’ | 6. Valspar ‘Blanched Thyme’ | 7. Benjamin Moore ‘Gloucester Sage’ | 8. Sherwin Williams ‘Rosemary’

Regardless of whether you want to go light, dark or somewhere in the middle, there’s a gray green to fit your needs on this year’s list.

2 | Nature inspired greens

But we’re not done with green yet!

In case you want a color that is a little more vibrant, these nature-inspired greens may be just what you’re looking for.

Glidden‘s 2022 color of the year is ‘Guacamole’.

As the name suggests, it’s a fresh, organic green with yellow undertones. A much warmer color than the gray-greens above.

It looks awesome with other nature-inspired colors such as wood tones and natural fibers (like the jute rug in the room above).

If you’ve seen any of my makeovers, you know that I love Farrow & Ball paint.

They chose ‘Breakfast Room Green‘ as one of the trending colors for 2022.

It’s a beautiful, neutral shade of green that can be paired with pretty much any color (as you’ll see in the pictures below). And can work in any room.

Note: The blue on the dresser in the picture above is another of Farrow & Ball’s colors for this year. It’s called ‘Stone Blue’ and you’ll see more of it below.

1. Benjamin Moore ‘Fernwood Green’ | 2. Farrow & Ball ‘Breakfast Room Green’ | 3. Behr ‘Laurel Tree’ | 4. Benjamin Moore ‘High Park’ | 5. Glidden ‘Guacamole’ | 6. Sherwin Williams ‘Cucuzza Verde’ | 7. Sherwin Williams ‘Basque Green’ | 8. Dunn-Edwards ‘Hinterland’ | 9. Dunn-Edwards ‘Greener Pastures’

There are many other nature-inspired greens on the list as well.

Like the Glidden color above, a lot of them tend towards the yellow side of green. And all will bring more of this relaxing color to your room.

3 | Ocean-inspired greens and blues

Next up are the ocean-inspired colors. These range from mint green to aqua and dark ocean blue.

They are somewhat similar to the aqua trend from last year, but the colors tend to have less gray in them.

Leading the way is Behr. They selected ‘Breezeway’ as their 2022 color of the year.

It’s a sea glass green that looks beautiful with bleached woods, warm neutrals and other coastal colors.

1. Behr ‘Breezeway’ | 2. Benjamin Moore ‘Quiet Moments’ | 3. Behr ‘Wave Top’ | 4. Behr ‘Explorer Blue’ | 5. Dunn-Edwards ‘Tropical Lagoon’ | 6. Dunn Edwards ‘Big Sur Blue Jade’ | 7. Valspar ‘Mountain River’

If you love coastal decor in clear ocean colors, then these refreshing greens and blues may be exactly what you’re looking for.

4 | Gray blue

Similar to what we saw with the greens, blues with a strong gray undertone are popular this year.

These blues look really good paired with white. But can also be used as a neutral since they go with all other colors.

The HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams color of the year for 2022 is ‘Aleutian’.

It’s a restful color that brings relaxation to the room.

It can be paired with neutrals. But also looks beautiful with contrasting warmer colors such as pastel pink.

Farrow & Ball also has a 2022 trending color in this category, called ‘Stone Blue‘.

Use it in a gloss finish for extra pizzazz.

The white on the walls in this picture is another of Farrow & Ball’s color picks for 2022 called ‘School House White’. You’ll see more of it later in the list.

As with most Farrow & Ball paints, the color can look totally different in different light. (It looks like a teal in this living room).

So make sure to test it in your room

Speaking of British paint colors, Dulux also chose a blue for their 2022 color of the year, called ‘Bright Skies’.

It’s a lighter blue that will brighten up a room, while still providing a relaxing vibe.

Pairing it with warm neutrals will make the blue stand out, while combining it with gray will keep it looking more muted.

1. Dulux ‘Bright Skies’ | 2. HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams ‘Aleutian’ | 3. Sherwin Williams ‘Moody Blue’ | 4. Farrow & Ball ‘Stone Blue’ | 5. Dunn-Edwards ‘Smoky Blue’ | 6. Sherwin Williams ‘Inky Blue’

5 | Periwinkle

Periwinkle is the next color on the latest 2022 color trends.

This one comes mostly from Pantone who created ‘Very Peri’ for their 2022 color of the year. (The first time they’ve ever created a new color rather than choosing an existing one from their collection.)

Pantone isn’t a paint company, but they are one of the leading color forecasting companies in the world, so their selections hold a lot of weight.

They say this color is courageous and encourages personal inventiveness and creativity.

It’s a blue that’s as close to purple as you’re going to find on this year’s trends list.

As someone who has decorated with periwinkle in the past (my whole house used to be painted this color), I can say that it actually is a neutral. It looks beautiful with every other color!

So if you’re looking to paint your house with a color that’s a little different, this may be your chance.

1. Valspar ‘Orchid Ash’ | 2. Dunn-Edwards ‘Prim Blue’ | 3. Dunn-Edwards ‘Enchanting Sky’ | Dunn-Edwards ‘Ocean City’ | Pantone ‘Very Peri’

There are a couple of paint companies that had periwinkle tones on their trending list, so Pantone isn’t totally alone in this prediction.

If you’re looking for paint colors that are similar to Pantone’s ‘Very Peri’, try Sherwin Williams ‘Forget Me Not’ or Benjamin Moore ‘Waterdrop’.

6 | Earthy brown

Continuing with the nature-inspired colors, earthy brown is the next entry on the list.

Dunn-Edwards chose ‘Art and Craft’ as their 2022 color of the year, calling it a ‘warm and earthy shade that evokes feelings of stability and calm while allowing for a large range of play with creativity and change’.

In other words, they think it brings together calm and adventure, kind of like hiking a nature trail through the mountains.

Since brown is a neutral, it works with most other colors. But looks especially stunning when paired with other light-colored neutrals. Or orange if you prefer to add some color.

1. Sherwin Williams ‘Cocoa Whip’ | 2. Behr ‘Wild Mustang’ | 3. Dunn-Edwards ‘Wandering Road’ | 4. Dunn-Edwards ‘Art and Craft’ | 5. Sherwin Williams ‘Uber Umber’ | 6. Dunn-Edwards ‘Nomad’ | 7. Sherwin Williams ‘Urbane Bronze’ | 8. Dunn-Edwards ‘Espresso Macchiato’ | 9. Valspar ‘Fired Earth’

While only one paint company chose a brown as their color of the year, many of them had at least one on their trending colors list.

So you have a lot of options to choose from if you want to add brown to your color palette.

7 | Off White

For those of you looking for traditional neutral colors, off white along with some lighter beige colors were the most represented shades in the 2022 paint color trends.

While none of the paint companies chose one of these neutrals as a color of the year, Farrow and Ball had ‘School House White‘ as one of their 5 trending colors for 2022.

It’s an off-white that has a lot of depth to it, and has been on many interior designers’ favorite paint color lists for years.

So there’s a reason that it’s trending.

Being a neutral, it pairs with everything. Even white (as you can see from the baseboards in the picture above.)

1. Behr ‘Whisper White’ | 2. Benjamin Moore ‘Steam’ | 3. Dunn-Edwards ‘Almond Milk’ | 4. Sherwin Williams ‘Alabaster’ | 5. Benjamin Moore ‘Collector’s Item’ | 6. Sherwin Williams ‘Shoji White’ | 7. Farrow & Ball ‘School House White’ | 8. Benjamin Moore ‘Natural Linen’ | 9. Sherwin Williams ‘Accessible Beige’

While none of the paint companies selected one of these neutrals as their color of the year, there were many shades included in their trending colors lists. Including the ever popular ‘Accessible Beige’ from Sherwin Williams.

So if traditional neutrals are up your alley, take a look at the list of colors above for good paint color selections.

8 | Crimson Red

With the rest of the list consisting of cool, gray-based or neutral tones, the last two colors are for all of the warm color lovers.

Like the off-white selection above, these were not selected as “Colors of the Year” by any company.

But they were included in Farrow & Ball’s 5 trending colors for 2022. And a lot of the other paint colors included them in their trending lists.

So I added them to my trend list, too.

If you like these reds, but can’t imagine painting a whole room in them, consider using them as an accent, painting a door this color or updating a piece of furniture.

Farrow & Ball’s trending red is ‘Incarnadine‘.

It’s a bold, crimson red that will breathe life into any room.

Like the ceiling in the picture above. (I love decorated ceilings!)

I love how the red and white stripes look like a canopy, which is emphasized even more by bringing them down onto the wall a few inches.

The headboards and wall are painted using other Farrow & Ball trending colors (‘School House White’ and ‘Breakfast Room Green’) so you can get an idea of how they all work together.

Did you notice that the headboards are just painted on the wall? (I had to look at the picture a couple of times to figure that out).

1. Benjamin Moore ‘Wild Flower’ | 2. Behr ‘Linganberry Punch’ | 3. Farrow & Ball ‘Incarnidine’ | 4. Sherwin Williams ‘Red Bay’ | 5. Sherwin Williams ‘Sierra Redwood’ | 6. Dunn-Edwards ‘Revival Red’

If ‘Incarnadine’ isn’t quite your style, there are a few other trending red paint colors that you may like better.

9 | Golden Yellow

Finally, the last color on our list is golden yellow.

The yellows on this year’s list range everywhere from a pale sunshine yellow all the way to a bold golden yellow.

As with the red, these can be used to paint the whole room, create an accent wall (or ceiling), or highlight a door depending on how much yellow you want.

The last of Farrow & Ball’s 2022 trending paint colors is ‘Babouche‘, named after the soft slippers traditionally worn in Morocco.

It’s a bright yellow that can make any room feel full of sunshine. And would be perfect for a cheerful kitchen or welcoming front door.

Pair it with white to tone down the yellow a bit while still maintaining its cheerfulness.

Or if you like a little more contrast, it would look very pretty combined with blue or the periwinkle mentioned above.

1. Dunn-Edwards ‘Natural Light’ | 2. Benjamin Moore ‘Pale Moon’ | 3. Behr ‘Cornstalk’ | 4. Sherwin Williams ‘Peace Yellow’ | 5. Sherwin Williams ‘Chartreuse’ | 6. Dunn-Edwards ‘Gatsby Glitter’ | 7. Dunn-Edwards ‘Candelabra’ | 8. Farrow & Ball ‘Babouche’

For a less saturated yellow, try one of the other trending shades selected by the other paint companies for this year’s list.

Well, that’s it for the latest trending paint colors in 2022. Hopefully, you found some inspiration for your next painting project.

These Paint Colors Will Dominate Our Homes in 2022

We tend to define our favorite colors and stick with them as other aspects of our lives change. Those who like bright shades are more likely to splash them up on their walls, for example, while others who gravitate toward neutrals commonly keep their spaces just as calm.

This year, after plenty of change, you might feel the urge to upgrade your home with a new, yet predictable coat of paint. Or maybe you’ve developed a ho-hum attitude toward your preferred color choices after spending so much time inside, and are looking to wander outside your comfort zone. “Consumers are craving stability now more than ever,” says Andrea Magno, director of color marketing and development at Benjamin Moore. “As the desire to express personal style increases, paint colors provide a great opportunity to showcase that creativity.”

Pale Moon by Benjamin Moore is a soft and subtle yellow shade.

“Paint color has a direct impact on the mood of homeowners and their guests,” adds Erika Woelfel, vice president of color and creative services at Behr. “We’re seeing homeowners lean toward engaging hues that are reminiscent of the outdoors. Calm hues and nature-based colors provide balance and a breath of fresh air in your space.”

In anticipation of 2022, we examined industry-wide paint color forecasts and spoke to experts at Benjamin Moore, Behr, and ECOS Paints about the shades they predict will be most popular in the year ahead.

Greens, Greens, Greens

October Mist, a gentle sage-green hue, is Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year 2022.

If you’re open to making a change that can easily adapt to your surroundings, look no further than Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year 2022, October Mist. “It’s a soft, silvery-green that can transition from soft and dreamy to invigorating and nurturing,” says Magno. The gentle, sage-green color can transform thrifted furniture for a guest room or accentuate existing earthy tones in a living room. “October Mist makes it easy to create combinations with a wide range of colors,” Magno continues. “As we worked on it, it quickly became clear that this color creates a canvas for experimentation.”

Everlasting Sage by ECOS Paints is an ideal color for those who want a noticeable and stylish change without much heavy lifting.

Emma Pugliares, marketing director at ECOS Paints, agrees, which is why the brand’s Everlasting Sage is also a top choice. “People are looking for softer tones to create a sense of warmth and well-being in their homes,” Pugliares says. “This calming color changes with the light and is endlessly adaptable.”

Green-painted kitchens and olive-toned walls gained increasing popularity over the past couple of years, and it looks like the pale-green paint shade will continue its reign for the foreseeable future. Sherwin-Williams named Evergreen Fog its 2022 Color of the Year, and Breakfast Room Green popped up on Farrow and Ball’s list of top five paint shades for the coming year.

Punchy Earth Tones

Behr’s Perfect Penny is an ideal shade for those who want to lean into earthy, seasonal colors.

Like most of the 2022 paint color trend forecasts we’ve seen so far, Behr’s palette focuses on nature-inspired shades. Woelfel recommends the cranberry-colored Lingonberry Punch as a chance to try something new. This is the type of saturated contender that’ll look great in tight quarters— perhaps in a powder room that needs to be modernized in your home. Paint the ceiling, trim, and even the door in this shade, and complement it with brass or black accents. A slightly brighter option is Behr’s Perfect Penny, which resembles the coin’s copper hue. Woelfel notes that both earth-toned colors would look great in a dining room during a cozy feast.

 Shades of Gray

Designer Lisa Tharp created ECOS Paint’s Approaching Dusk shade.

If you enjoy switching out your wardrobe and decor whenever the weather shifts from warm to cool, then ECOS Paint’s Approaching Dusk, created by designer Lisa Tharp, is an ideal shade to channel for fall and winter. “It’s a hazy, violet-infused shade that can be used as a softer alternative to pure gray,” Pugliares notes.

Behr’s raven-colored Cracked Pepper is also great for those who want to create a dark and impactful statement. Woelfel recommends using the shade to coat an edgy accent wall in an entryway, paired with wood tones and woven textures. If Cracked Pepper is too stark for your liking, Magno recommends using the navy-blue Mysterious AF shade by Benjamin Moore. It’s a lighter pick that’s still “a moody, deep, earthy hue,” she says.

Soothing Pastels

Hint of Violet by Benjamin Moore is a pastel lilac with a cool-gray cast.

For those who’ve always been drawn to bright colors, don’t fret: “Soft, frothy pastels are also trending for 2022,” says Magno, who notes that these paint shades “provide a whimsical and airy feel.” In Benjamin Moore’s collection, Magno thinks the blue-gray Quiet Moments and pastel-lilac Hint of Violet colors fit the bill, and can work with a wide range of palettes. Try these subtle shades out in bedrooms to create a relaxing environment, or incorporate them into hallways for a harmonious feel.

The Pantone Color Institute recently announced its Pantone Color of the Year 2022: a brand-new shade called Very Peri, which is described as “a dynamic, periwinkle-blue hue with a vivifying, violet-red undertone.” Use this versatile color in any space where you want to feel inspired—we think it’d make an eye-catching accent wall to add a sense of playfulness to your home office or bedroom.

Breezeway by Behr can work as a calming shade in kitchens, from the walls to the cabinets.

The sea glass–green Breezeway shade by Behr, which marks the brand’s 2022 Color of the Year, can work as a playful accent in kitchens, while the beige hue of Whale Bone by ECOS Paints is perfect for a primary bath. “I’d recommend it in place of a stark, bright white,” Pugliares says. “It provides a flexible backdrop for more colorful accents.”

In 2022, we’ll also relish cheerful yellows, such as the understated Pale Moon by Benjamin Moore and the brighter, bolder Babouche by Farrow and Ball. Whichever mindset you’re after, these options should give you lots to think about in the months ahead. “It’s all about experimenting and making your own design in 2022,” Magno says. “Use the palette as a reflection of your personal style.”

10 Best Interior Paint Colors 2022

by Andre Kazimierski | Apr 23, 2022

Finding the best interior paint colors for your house is hard. As a homeowner, you’re faced with an endless array of colors, shades, and sheens. To complicate things further, you’ll need to coordinate paint colors between rooms and surfaces. That’s why our color experts created this top 10 favorite interior paint colors to make it easy for you.

Regardless if you’re sprucing up your bedroom walls or painting the whole house, here are the top 10 most popular interior paint colors for any room.

Best Paint Color Criteria

First and foremost, our goal is to save you time and money with this list. You shouldn’t spend all weekend ordering test patch swatches and driving to paint stores.

To simplify the process, the paint colors listed are fairly neutral, easy to match, and can be used in most rooms. Remember, every home is different and the amount of light in a room affects how colors look.

Accordingly, we’ve combined past job data, modern search trends, and interior designer favorites to rank paint colors by popularity.

With this list of the best paint colors for your home, we’ll make the process as simple as possible. Let’s start with one of our favorite classic interior paint colors for any room of the house.

  1. Sherwin Williams Pure White

Pure White (SW 7005) by Sherwin Williams is a versatile off-white paint color that is often used in the kitchen, bedroom, or living room. Likewise, it has a soft, warmer taupe tone that doesn’t feel terribly creamy and pairs well with gray color palettes.

Flexibility is key with this popular modern neutral interior color as it can be used on walls, cabinets, trim, or ceilings.

  1. Benjamin Moore Classic Gray

Benjamin Moore Classic Gray (BM 1548) is a natural light warm gray color that registers as a sophisticated off-white on the walls of most rooms. A top paint color among designers, this can be used to paint the whole house, bedroom, living room, or kitchen. Not to mention, you can use this color instead of white in a darker room. Lastly, this top gray shade works in both south-facing and north-facing rooms.

  1. Repose Gray Sherwin-Williams

This warm neutral paint color looks gray without feeling too cold. It’s a great color for walls in living rooms, foyers, dining rooms, kitchens, and bedrooms. Repose Gray (SW 7015) has slight taupe or green undertones and pairs well with white trim colors like Extra White (SW 7006).

The combination of gray and beige blends perfectly, allowing this color to go with most existing home paint color palettes.

  1. PPG Delicate White

As PPG’s most popular white color, Delicate White (PPG1001-1) is a cooler-toned, pale color that can be used on your walls, trim, or both. Ultimately versatile, it pairs with most paint colors and allows for a fresh contrast in rooms with natural wood trim.

One thing to watch for with this off-white PPG Paint color is the yellow undertones that can come through depending on lighting and existing room decor. In any event, this is an inviting color option that can brighten up smaller rooms.

Narrowing down paint colors in a bedroom can be tough. With thousands of colors to choose from, where do you start? A good place to begin would be this list of popular bedroom wall hues curated by our expert design team.

  1. Sea Salt By Sherwin Williams

Sherwin-Williams Sea Salt (SW 6204) is a popular coastal “neutral” interior paint color that is a mix of gray and green. Used often in bathrooms, dining rooms, kitchens, and mudrooms, this is a relaxing cooler-leaning color with slight blue undertones.

This color has been described as “chameleon-like” in that it looks different in a variety of rooms/lighting. It also happens to be one of the most researched painting colors in the US with nearly 50,000 online searches per month.

  1. Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace

One of Benjamin Moore’s truest whites, Chantilly Lace (OC-65) is a crisp, clean interior color with slightly gray undertones used on trim, cabinets, and walls. In most rooms and lighting, it reads like a warm white and can be used on ceilings as well.

Now as one of the whitest whites, it may take a third or fourth coat when painting over most wall colors. Therefore, it’s no surprise that this popular interior shade has the same wall coverage issues as Sherwin’s Highly Reflective White and Behr’s Ultra Pure White. Nonetheless, it acts as a great contrasting trim color to other popular Benjamin Moore wall colors, Revere Pewter and Gray Owl.

  1. Behr Swiss Coffee

Swiss Coffee 12 by Behr is another warm white that has a neutral base that may appear more creamy, yellow depending on room lighting or time of day. In any case, it’s Behr’s most popular interior paint shades, and test swatches can be found in most Home Depot stores.

Behr’s Swiss Coffee has a bit of a beige undertone and is a popular neutral hue for bedrooms, living rooms, basements, and family rooms.

  1. Farrow and Ball Hague Blue

Hague Blue (No. 30) by Farrow Ball is a deep, darker blue-green that is a popular choice as an accent color or whole room color. Similar to SW Sea Salt, the color changes slightly in different interior lighting situations. It’s a rich and luxurious paint color that works well in a home office, dining room, or as a contrasting kitchen island cabinet color.

This popular Farrow & Ball color pairs beautifully with white trim or bright furniture pieces as a moody backdrop. It also works well with brass fixtures or a white tile bathroom as a classic shade of blue.

  1. Gray Owl By Benjamin-Moore

One of the best-selling paints for Benjamin Moore in recent years, Gray Owl (2137-60) is a highly versatile warm-ish gray paint color. While blue, colder undertones may come out in certain lights, it’s still a very popular living room or kitchen paint color.

It can also be used in hallways and contrasts well with crisp white trim and flat white ceilings as a wall color. Certainly, it reflects light well in a room. On the other hand, it won’t make a small room look bigger like some of the white colors above.

  1. Origami White (Sherwin Williams)

Sherwin Williams’ Origami White (SW 7636) is a balanced, modern wall color that is becoming more popular each year. It is white with a slight tan undertone that can be a neutral backdrop for most rooms in your house.

Origami White’s unique warm hue is why many interior decor experts swear by it as the perfect neutral paint color.

Interior Paint Colors By Brand

Oftentimes, you’ll be considering paint colors from specific brands as a homeowner.

In this case, your paint crew may have a preferred painting brand or a specific paint store may be located nearby. The most frequented stores include colors from specific paint brands. These include Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, Home Depot, or Lowes stores.

To make things easy, we’re going to highlight our best picks for interior paint colors from brands carried by each store.

Best Interior Color At Sherwin Williams

The top-selling paint color by Sherwin Williams is Agreeable Gray (SW 7029). This popular pick from Sherwin is a softer warm gray paint color that coordinates with most other paint colors.

The color is a balanced softer shade that goes with any home style. It’s often used as a wall color in living rooms, hallways, or staircases. This greige tone is best used on walls. Similarly, it pairs well with a variety of shades including white trim, greens, blues, teals, and virtually any contrasting warm paint color.

Did you know that Sherwin also carries some of our favorite exterior paint products? If you are painting exterior stucco or wood siding, their SuperPaint and Duration lines are solid picks.

Top Benjamin Moore Paint Color

We mentioned Chantilly Lace earlier but another top Benjamin Moore paint color is White Dove (OC-17). This is a classic style short shade of white that has a hint of warmth to it.

White Dove is a neutral favorite for homeowners and contractors, often used on interior trim, moldings, baseboards, and doors.

Home Depot’s Best Painting Color

Home Depot carries a few different paint color brands including Behr, PPG, and Glidden. We recommend Behr in particular for budget DIY painting projects like painting a small bedroom. Please note, paint offerings from big box stores are cheaper but the paint is “entry-level” when it comes to quality. Specifically, the coverage and finish of the paint will leave a lot to be desired.

The best interior paint color at home Depot is Behr White 52. It’s a cooler-toned white color that has enough of a tint to be categorized as an “off-white”. Likewise, this is most apparent when you pair it as a wall color with trim painted in a true or base white.

For exteriors, you can check our new trending house paint color list which includes Behr’s popular Polar Bear 75.

Lowes Interior Paint Colors

Lowes, as a whole, is a slightly nicer version of Home Depot but that comes with slightly higher prices and a limited selection. Nonetheless, Lowes carries known interior paint brands like Valspar and HGTV Home by Sherwin.

If you are confused about the difference between paint found at a Sherwin Williams paint store and the HGTV brand carried by Lowes, we are too. Likewise, it may worth a future blog post.

For now, we will highlight one nice aspect of this confusing corporate partnership. Most if not all Sherwin Williams paint color swatches can be picked up at Lowes. If you live closer to a Lowes versus a Sherwin Store like me, this is super useful.

As a general rule of thumb, you can always ask any paint store to mix colors for you from other brands. They all share the color mix codes with one another.

Valspar Paint Colors

A few recommended favorite paint colors from Valspar are as follows. Gilded Linen is a great warmer neutral, Summer Gray is a cooler off-white, and Oyster Pearl is another popular choice. We also like Granite Dust for kitchen cabinets or island accent pairings. Not to mention, Blissful Blue by Valspar is a homey bedroom color that contrasts well with white trim.

Unusual wall paints: 10 options

Decorative wall paint will help make your home interior bright and will serve as a wonderful decoration that will not take up much space in the room. We show the most unusual paints for wall decoration.

Decorating the walls of an apartment with paint is one of the easiest ways to decorate a room, along with wallpapering. But if you don’t want to use classic mixes, you can choose a more decorative option that will also serve as a decoration for your home.

Especially for you, we have found 10 most unusual wall paints that will make the interior brighter and add originality to it.

1. Embossed

An interesting alternative to regular paint with a smooth surface is a relief coating that will make the wall more “voluminous”. In stores, you can choose from many different reliefs: from wavy lines to abstract patterns.

The embossed paint is very pleasant to the touch, so you can not only admire the interior, but also enjoy it tactilely.

2. Pearlescent

This is a real chameleon paint. It contains a special pigment that refracts light rays. Therefore, under different lighting – natural or artificial, strong or subdued – and at different angles of incidence of light, mother-of-pearl paint acquires different brightness and saturation. As a rule, it has a relief surface, which creates a changeable play of light and shadow depending on the lighting – this also affects the change in the appearance of the wall.

3. Silk effect

Another popular coating option: paint that imitates a textile surface, in this case a silk fabric. Here, too, a pearlescent pigment is partially present, thanks to which the wall acquires the brilliant overflows characteristic of silk. The big advantage of this paint: in addition to acrylic and pigments, it contains water, so the paint is harmless and environmentally friendly.

5. Slate

With slate paint, you can turn a wall into a solid chalk board: you can write or draw on it with crayons. In the children’s room, such paint will help diversify the circle of the child’s activities and protect ordinary wallpapers from children’s drawings. It is also popular as a kitchen or study design, used in office design. Slate paint is characterized mainly by dark colors, the most popular of which is black. Therefore, it is most often used for partial decoration, so as not to “darken” the interior of the room too much.

6. Marker room

You can also write and draw on the wall decorated with marker paint – only not with chalk, but with felt-tip pens and markers. The paint has a shiny glossy surface that can be decorated in classic white or other light colors, so that it will organically fit into a modern light interior in a minimalist or high-tech style. The main thing to be aware of when using marker paint is that it takes a long time to dry – it will take about a week.

any sizes. Such a coating will become a functional organizer for notes and photos in the office, as well as a great addition to the play area in the children’s room.

8. Mosaic

The specificity of mosaic paint is that it contains small capsules of other colors. They do not mix with the main tone of the paint and are sprayed onto the wall in the form of a chaotic dotted pattern, as in the photo below. You can choose mosaic paint with a similar palette of capsules, or, on the contrary, you can choose fundamentally different colors to make the design of the room contrast and colorful.

9. With watercolor effect

Paint with this effect will help to turn the wall into an abstract painting, as if painted in watercolor. For this, only two colors similar in tone are used: first, the first is applied and dries completely, and then the second is applied to it and blurred with a roller. Thanks to this technology, uneven transitions between colors are obtained, which create a watercolor effect.

10. Antique

Wall paint can also help to artificially age the interior, if the chosen style of decoration requires it, for example, Provence or Shabby Chic. To do this, use a special paint with imitation of scuffs or cracks, which creates the necessary atmosphere of antiquity in the room.

best hair dye: which hair dye is better

The desire of many girls to stand out, to add originality to themselves, pushes them to some experiments – changing their image. It is important not to forget to take care of the beauty and health of the hair. And it depends on the ability to choose the right paint.

Why choose professional paints?

When choosing a product for girls, the question is always acute – is it necessary to purchase professional hair dyes? What kind of paints should be purchased – Russian or imported? Often the cost of such products repels potential customers from buying. Still, it is better to use professional brands of paints and here’s why:

  • content of coloring elements. Professional products contain more gentle components. In salon coloring, a professional mixes the paint with an oxidizing agent containing the optimal percentage of acid. The selection takes place taking into account the individual characteristics of the client, while conventional paints contain a larger percentage of such acids, which causes significant harm;
  • percentage of caring elements. Professional brands have a higher content of special components for post-staining care. These elements are usually aimed at nourishing, moisturizing, as well as maintaining color fastness;
  • color palette. The possibility of mixing shades to get the perfect color is unlimited. Such paints make it possible to realize even the most daring fantasies;
  • durability. Frequent staining is harmful. Only professional products can reduce the number of trips to the hairdresser, because their durability is many times greater than that of ordinary home paints. Salon staining is not washed off, only regrown roots can tell about prescription;

How to choose a quality hair dye among the variety?

Today, a huge number of good, professional coloring products are presented on the beauty industry market. When choosing paint, you need to rely on the following points:

  • natural hair color;
  • skin tone;
  • structure features;
  • age;
  • individual characteristics, for example, allergies to certain components;

Natural color and structure are the unique features of every girl’s hair. The same shade can look different on two people precisely because of these two points.

Professional paints are safe for people with sensitive scalps and allergies because they do not stain the skin. With all the variety of coloring agents among foreign manufacturers, paints made in Russia are also presented on the market in large quantities. They can compete with foreign analogues. Estel is the most famous Russian brand, which is included in the inexpensive price segment.

When choosing a paint, pay attention to its durability. It is of the following types:

  • ammonia colors (permanent). Such a composition penetrates deeply, paints over gray hair, providing durability;
  • semi-permanent. Due to its gentle composition, it does not penetrate deep. The durability of such hair dyes is designed for 25-30 head washing procedures;
  • ammonia-free. Less resistant paints, withstand 8-10 hair washing procedures;
  • temporary. The type of paint that allows you to experiment with appearance more often without much harm to health. The color of the paint will remain until the first shampoo;

The durability of the paint provides the percentage of oxidizing agent contained in the composition, so you should also carefully study its features:

  • 3% – For light color matching with natural color. Suitable for those with sensitive skin types;
  • 6% – paints over gray hair, allows you to change the color by 1-2 tones;
  • 9-12% – deep staining, allowing you to overlap the color by 2-3 tones. Not suitable for sensitive skin, as it can cause burns;

When choosing a coloring agent, it is necessary to take into account all individual points, then the selection process will cease to be difficult. The dyeing process will not harm the hair, and the result will satisfy all expectations.

Adhesive paints

This type of paint is based on glue. Due to their properties, such paints have clear advantages over others. They are distinguished by high water resistance and the formation of a matte porous layer on the surface painted by them.

Adhesive-based paints can be applied on wet surfaces (not possible with other types of paint). In addition, they have a relatively short drying time.

Adhesive paints do not change color and shade, they are in good contact with surfaces made of any materials. But most importantly, such paints are relatively cheap, and the surfaces painted with them can be easily repainted by washing out the previous composition with water. However, adhesive paints are unable to withstand the effects of atmospheric agents and therefore quickly break down in the open air. Poorly diluted glue paint leaves stains and marks from a brush or roller on surfaces after drying.

With the advent of the latest advanced technologies, glue-based paint has practically fallen into disuse, since for all its advantages, such compositions also have disadvantages. Recently, adhesive paints are used mainly in the decorative design of premises.

This text is an introductory fragment.

The whitest of all whites. Passively cooled paint discovered

Last fall, a new entry appeared in the Guinness Book of Records: the compilers recognized the existence of the whitest paint on the planet. Engineers from Purdue University (USA) created it by no means in order to be among the champions. Their main goal is to minimize the effects of global warming in megacities, reduce the cost of electricity for air conditioners and use paint to achieve passive cooling of buildings.

The whitest paint

The team of scientists led by Professor Shulin Ruan presented the first sample of ultra-white paint in October 2020. Six months later, they managed to move the border of the possible a little more. Now their paint is not only the whitest, but also keeps the surface colder than any of the commercial white paints available on the market.

Whereas the original paint reflects 95.5% of sunlight, the improved paint has a reflectivity of 98.1%. For commercial paints designed to remove heat, this figure varies between 80-90%. They can’t make the surface colder than the surroundings, Rouen’s paint can.

This is proven both in this picture, presented in the most scientific work on white paint, and in a face-to-face comparison with one of the commercial samples.

Stepping onto the roof of a university building, scientists demonstrate the difference in temperature: the prototype heats up to 21.6 degrees Celsius, while a commercial paint with 88% reflectivity shows almost 30 degrees under the same conditions at an air temperature of about 23 degrees .

The difference between 98% and 90% may seem insignificant. But it’s one thing to absorb 10% of light, another thing is only 2%. A fivefold difference gives a significant cooling effect without supplying any amount of electricity.

What is it made of?

This white ink contains a high concentration of barium sulfate, which is widely used in cosmetics and photographic paper. In the form of a suspension, this compound is often used as a contrast agent in radiography.

It took scientists more than seven years to test over a hundred different materials before they settled on this winning formula. Watching paint dry is like watching grass grow. However, scientists spent a significant part of their time just on such a seemingly meaningless process.

They eventually discovered that they could make very, very white and reflective paint with barium sulfate.

As the scientists themselves explain, the particles of barium sulfate in the paint have different sizes. How much each particle scatters light depends on its size, so a wider range of particle sizes allows the paint to scatter a larger spectrum of sunlight.

The paint is capable of reflecting heat back into space through a transparent atmospheric spectral window ranging from 8 to 13 micrometers. This is a window in the infrared spectrum, in which there is a relatively small absorption of terrestrial thermal radiation by atmospheric gases. It is critical to keeping the Earth habitable for our lives.

Transmission spectrum of the Earth’s atmosphere in the visible range, near and middle infrared ranges. Absorption bands for water vapor, carbon dioxide, oxygen and ozone are marked

Since the heat goes directly into space, the advantage of such passive cooling over active air conditioning is obvious: warm air is not emitted into the atmosphere.

The authors of the development say that they could make the paint even whiter than white, but further increase in the concentration of barium sulfate particles negatively affects the characteristics of the paint: it peels and breaks more easily.

Approximately 50-100 milliliters of this paint is currently produced in the laboratory. It takes about 18 hours, and the resulting volume is enough to paint an area of 58 square centimeters. This is a square with a side of a little more than 7.5 centimeters – not much at all.

But a patent application for the development has already been filed, there is a preliminary agreement with a major paint manufacturer. To produce barium sulfate in large volumes, it will be necessary to increase the extraction of barite, a fairly widespread mineral. Scientists assure that this process is more environmentally friendly than standard paint release processes. So there is hope that in the near future this paint can be seen, and not just heard about it. Then all these statements will be tested in practice, and the carbon footprint of barite will be more noticeable.

Why is this paint needed?

According to the scientists themselves, super-white paint, unfortunately, will not turn out to be a “silver bullet”, an ideal and perfect solution for passive cooling of buildings and streets. Albeit with some caution, inherent in all scientists, they say that paint at certain times of the year in certain locations can reduce the need for cooling by 75%.

By lowering the surface temperature of buildings painted with this paint, the internal temperature of these buildings can also be reduced. If buildings are not heated by sunlight, then the need to turn on the air conditioner either disappears altogether or is noticeably reduced.

In New York City, rooftops have been painted white for several years

This in turn means lower fossil fuel electricity costs and potential reductions in carbon emissions.

These are high matters, which will be hardly noticeable in the short term. The impact on urban heat islands may be more tangible. In cities, it is warm and hot in summer, the jungle of asphalt and concrete behaves differently than that of wood and grass. Accumulating more heat during the hot day, they heat the cities at night, not allowing residents to take a break from the heat.

Residents of Los Angeles have felt this very well in their own skin, where even in the winter months people end up in intensive care with heat stroke, and doctors register deaths from the heat. And for several years now, they have been painting the roads white – not all, just a dozen streets as part of a pilot program to combat urban heat islands.

Reviews are positive: it seems like the impact of such roads on the thermal footprint is noticeable even from space.

Greyish white road paint started in 2018. Each mile of painted asphalt cost $40,000, which is quite expensive. Will the latest paint be used for these purposes? It would be logical. But so far, its future commercial characteristics and the price at which a can of such paint will rise in retail are not really known.

Features of lime paints – composition and types

Lime paint is a simple and reliable paint and varnish material that has been known to us for more than one hundred years. Such paint can be obtained from exclusively natural natural ingredients, which is why it remains to this day the oldest paint ever created by man. Even in the modern world, lime paint does not give up its position. It not only decorates ancient architectural monuments, demonstrating to us the skill of the great architects of the past, but also remains relevant in finishing work both in the field of restoration and in the field of modern construction.

Lime paint composition

Modern lime paints have largely retained old recipes, with the only difference being that innovations and the latest technologies have made it possible to introduce additional components into them that improve the performance of the coating, so the compositions of lime paints from different manufacturers may vary slightly.

Nevertheless, the basis of any lime paint is water and slaked lime, which acts as a binder. Slaked lime is obtained from burnt limestone. This sedimentary rock is quite widely used in construction: in addition to obtaining a binder for lime paints, it is also used in the production of crushed stone, concrete and various tiles, and under certain conditions limestone deposits form marble.

As fillers to give certain technical characteristics to lime paint, aluminum alum, calcium chloride, table salt, cellulose fibers and other components are used.

Due to the characteristics of the base, tinted lime paints make it possible to obtain predominantly light and pastel shades of the painted base. The color of the paint is given by inorganic pigments, such as iron oxide pigments (red, yellow, brown and black), chromium oxide, cadmium, cobalt pigments and others.

Types of lime-based paints

Lime paint usually does not have a classification and division into certain types. This is due to the fact that lime paints are universal – you will not find a special lime facade paint or lime paint for interior work. They can be used both as a paint for exterior and interior work, in addition, both walls and ceilings can be painted with lime paint, so it makes no sense to divide them by scope. As for the classification by composition, each manufacturer independently distinguishes the types of lime paint, depending on their own recipes and the technical characteristics obtained.

So, for example, in the assortment of the Friedlander Paints trademark, two types of lime paint are presented: classic and highly filled.

  • HYGIENOL Classic Lime Paint has an authentic composition to protect old foundations from deterioration and is excellent for the restoration of cultural heritage sites. And its incombustibility (fire hazard class KM0), hypoallergenicity and environmentally friendly composition give it significant advantages in the market of building paints.
  • HYGIENOL Highly Filled Lime Paint is an improved composition: the addition of cellulose fibers made it possible to achieve greater hiding power and ease of use of the paint, while maintaining all technical characteristics and protective properties. Highly filled lime paint can be used both in restoration work and in modern construction and repair: an improved formulation allows the paint to be applied with a roller, so you can get the right quality coating at any level of preparation.

Painting with lime paints. Manual

As with any other paint, before the painting work itself, it is necessary to prepare the base. The process of preparing the base includes work on leveling it – repairing cracks, chips, leveling protruding areas, as well as removing efflorescence, cleaning biodamages and various works to clean the base – removing dust, dirt, grease stains and old paintwork materials or residues of other finishing materials, for example , wallpaper and wallpaper paste. To obtain a high-quality result, the base ready for painting must be strong, even and dry.

However, lime paint for painting walls and ceilings, namely the classic composition, has one feature – the paint must be applied to a moistened base. You can moisten the surface before applying the paint using a spray gun or fly brush. In cases of a highly absorbent base or in very hot weather, this is especially important, in such cases the surface can be moistened twice: a day before painting and immediately before it. When painting with lime paint, priming the surface is not required.

Lime paint is applied only with a brush or brush, for highly filled lime paint “HYGIENOL” application by roller is allowed. In most cases, lime paint is applied in one coat, as it has a very high hiding power (class 1 according to DIN 13300 for HYGIENOL lime paints), but in some cases, for example, in the case of a highly absorbent substrate or the need to cover a dark or bright color, a second coat may be required. The average consumption of lime paint “HYGIENOL” is 200-300 g / m 2 , however, this indicator depends on many factors: the properties of the substrate, the method of application, etc., therefore, the exact consumption of any paint can only be determined empirically.

Advantages and disadvantages of lime paints

Lime paint is a reliable and proven composition for centuries, both as a facade paint and as a paint for interior work. Thanks to modern technology, lime paints today have many advantages.

Environmental and safety

Since the composition of the paint is a series of exclusively natural natural components and has a water base, lime paint can be called one of the safest for both humans and nature.

Hypoallergenic

In addition, lime paint does not contain any components that can cause allergic reactions. Therefore, lime paints are often recommended for painting kindergartens, schools, hospitals and children’s rooms in the residential sector.

KM0 – full fire safety

There are no combustible substances in the composition of lime paints, therefore lime paints are used at facilities with special requirements for fire safety – shopping and industrial complexes, hospitals, educational institutions, transport infrastructure facilities, etc.

High vapor permeability

This indicator is very important for evaluating the durability of the coating: if the paint layer allows steam to circulate and not accumulate in the substrate, then both the walls and their coating will last for decades. Only paints that do not form a film can have high vapor permeability, and lime paint is one of such compositions.

Germicidal properties

Protection against fungus and mold is a very important aspect, both utilitarian and aesthetic characteristics of the coating depend on it, it is especially important to pay attention to protection against biological damage in wet rooms and when working with facades. Lime paint allows you to reliably protect the base from microorganisms due to the high alkalinity of its composition, which creates an extremely unfavorable environment for the development of fungus and mold, as well as due to high vapor permeability, due to which water does not accumulate in the paint layer and in the substrate, which is also necessary for the growth of microorganisms.

However, with all these advantages, lime paints also have disadvantages. The main disadvantages of lime paints include:

Complexity of work

Classic lime paint requires a certain level of skill. It must be applied with a special tool and strictly follow a difficult technology, which requires a certain qualification from the contractor, which means that this option is not suitable for amateur repairs or budget construction. However, highly filled lime paint is much easier to work with and does not have this drawback.

Limited color palette

Due to its mineral composition, lime paint does not allow you to create bright, catchy, shades. The color palette of lime paints is most often made up of pastel colors, while bright and very saturated shades require the addition of organic components.

Areas of application for lime paints

Lime paint is used both as exterior paint and interior paint. It can be called universal, as it is suitable and actively used in a variety of fields.

However, lime paints are most widely used in the field of restoration, as classical lime paint has an authentic composition. Like no other, it is similar to the materials used by the masters of the past, and due to this, it is most compatible with ancient bases. In addition, such bactericidal properties and high vapor permeability also play a decisive role in choosing lime paints for the restoration of cultural heritage sites.

However, the scope of lime paints is not limited to restoration. Often it is recommended for painting rooms with high humidity, such as basements, basements and cellars, as well as bath complexes and other similar places.
