The right approach to choosing irrigation equipment

The main goal of any irrigation system is to provide plants with optimal soil moisture in the root layer during their growing season. Irrigation allows agricultural production to neutralize adverse climatic factors and minimize their impact on crop yield, which largely provides the conditions for running a stable, reliable and highly profitable agricultural business.

An optimal irrigation system is one that gives the fastest return on investment in the shortest possible time at the lowest operating cost. This can only be achieved if the irrigation system is able to compensate for the total loss of moisture in the area irrigated by it. The choice of the type of irrigation system requires serious analysis and depends on a number of factors, including: the configuration of the site planned for irrigation, the elevation difference, the distance of the site from the reservoir, the main cultivated crops.

Sprinkler irrigation is the most efficient method of irrigation. It imitates the natural process of watering plants and moistening the soil – rain. Currently, for irrigation of agricultural crops in this way, hose-drum systems and wide-span systems of circular, linear and hippodrome action are most widely used.

Hose-drum type irrigation systems have the following advantages:
• these systems are most effective when irrigating fields of complex configuration, fields with forested areas, ravines, roads and other obstacles;
• hose reels are easy to install;
• This sprinkler can be moved from field to field both during the irrigation season and once a season;
• With these sprinklers, crops can be sown in any area, since there is no need to take into account that they will be irrigated by stationary sprinklers;
• thanks to the mobility of hose drums, if necessary, it is possible to intensify the irrigation of individual sections of the field.

A possible limitation in the use of hose-drum type irrigation systems is due to several factors:
• the seasonal load per hose-drum unit (depending on type and model) can vary from 5 to 30 ha when irrigating vegetable crops and up to 40 ha when irrigating industrial crops. and fodder crops;
• Hose Drum Watering requires a large area (compared to the required area for wide coverage systems) to move the machine in working mode across the field along the tramline;
• these systems are more susceptible to the influence of gusty winds than wide-swath ones, which reduces the degree of uniformity of their distribution of “rain” and thus may affect the reduction in yield;
• Operating costs for hose reel systems are higher compared to those for wide grip systems. Increased costs of electricity, diesel fuel are due to the fact that hose-drum installations require more pressure (6-9 atm.) To supply water due to their technical and design features.

Wide-swath systems of circular, linear, hippodrome action are fundamentally different from hose-drum systems:
• wide-swath equipment is effective for irrigating fields of regular geometric shape;
• The initial cost of wide coverage units is higher than that of hose drums, but in terms of investment per hectare of irrigated area is lower: from 900-1200 €/ha versus 1200-1600 €/ha;
• Wide coverage systems have lower cost per hectare, lower system water pressure requirements, so these irrigation systems can make irrigation cheaper in the long run;
• The load on wide coverage irrigation equipment can vary from 30 to 170 ha;
• wide-swath circular systems can be controlled remotely using modern GPS technology, which can significantly reduce labor costs and the impact of the human factor on the irrigation process. After programming for any type of irrigation, the system automatically irrigates. After the passage is completed, the system stops and makes the next pass only when the next watering is needed;
• wide-cut plants have the ability to apply water-soluble mineral fertilizers simultaneously with irrigation, which allows saving on individual technological operations necessary for applying fertilizers without irrigation;
• Some models of wide reach systems have a “tow” option. This option allows one sprinkler to serve several fields, including within the same irrigation season. However, this requires additional time spent on turning the wheel brackets and towing. Usually this option is used temporarily until the fields irrigated with “towing” are not equipped with sprinkler equipment. Considering that this option, although slightly, increases the cost of the system, and also that the human factor has a high influence on the towing process, the equipment of the irrigation system has not found wide application;
• Wide-swath circular systems can work on fields with a slope of up to 15%, which gives them an additional advantage.

Between the ancient cities of Kievan Rus – Pereyaslav-Khmelnitsky and Cherkassy – the village of Peschanoe is located. A small village, which, however, can take its rightful place in history. After all, it is here 9August, for the first time in Ukraine, a practical seminar was held on the topic of intensive irrigation for owners of agricultural businesses. The seminar was organized by ASA ASTRA, the market leader in the sale of irrigation systems in Ukraine. The Latifundist.com team attended the event to share their impressions with readers.

Intensive irrigation systems
The choice of location is not accidental – the local Mayak Agrofirm has been successfully applying advanced agricultural technologies in its business for several years with the help of Astra. To date, Mayak has purchased 7 irrigation machines – 3 circular and 4 frontal. In total, the agricultural firm has 1.5 thousand hectares of land bank, of which 850 hectares are under irrigation. In addition, the management of the enterprise plans to allocate another 400 hectares for irrigation.

“We were the first in Ukraine to make an irrigation system that runs on electricity, and not on a diesel generator. By the way, I have never heard of such a thing being done in Europe,” said Alexei Vasilchenko, deputy director of Mayak Agrofirma, who opened the event. – “Yes, in terms of initial costs, an electrician is an order of magnitude more expensive, but much better in operation. Also, in operation, it is more profitable to purchase circular machines, rather than frontal ones. Moreover, the human factor is minimized in this way.”

Igor Gubarev, General Director of Astra Agro-Construction Alliance, touched upon more global issues in his speech. According to him, in Ukraine now there are about 1.7 million hectares of land under irrigation, but only 500 thousand hectares of them were actually irrigated in 2015. At the same time, the state program for the restoration and investment in irrigation systems, which was prepared by the former Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Oleksiy Pavlenko, was never implemented.

However, according to Igor Gubarev, even without state support, private farms can install 100-200 systems per year, which is equivalent to 15-30 thousand hectares. In his opinion, the main task of farms is to reduce the cost of their products, but without loss in productivity and yield. At the same time, Astra’s innovative proposals can help increase yields by 2-3 times. The expert is convinced that irrigation will play a key role in the future of Ukrainian agriculture. Igor Gubarev noted that many domestic farms can afford to introduce several irrigation systems a year even without attracting credit funds. Especially considering that their payback period is 2-3 years.

In an exclusive commentary to Latifundist.com, Igor Gubarev shared information on the amount of investment needed to introduce intensive irrigation systems: “In our experience, the cost of investment ranges from $1-2 thousand per hectare. It depends on the type of machine, the degree of automation, where the water source is and some other factors. This is an initial investment. As for maintenance, we need to consider the cost of water, the cost of its supply, the energy resources that will be used, but again, if we compare the increase in yields and the additional costs of operating the irrigation system, then the costs are simply negligible.

Sale is nothing, service is everything!
Worldwide, 50% of all irrigation systems are Valley branded, and Valmont is basically the originator of the irrigation machinery industry. World trends in irrigation
Representatives of Astra’s international partners also spoke at the seminar. Scott Mosez from the USA, Director of International Service and New Product Development at Valmont, spoke about the Variable Rate Irrigation (VRI) system, which provides the highest irrigation accuracy:

“If earlier everyone was striving for uniform irrigation, then the next stage is just the transition to uneven irrigation, depending on many factors: crop characteristics, soil, humidity, temperature, climate in general. The challenge is to get the same high results over the entire cultivated area. At first it was a development at the level of scientific institutions, and now many ordinary farms are interested in VRI and help us with feedback to create soil maps and yield maps.”

Continuing the theme, Irriger International Development Manager Gustavo Dantas from Brazil presented a program of agronomic irrigation support. It allows rational use of water resources and energy, taking into account such factors as soil type, water depth, local plant diseases, crop growth phase and others. The complex of equipment used in the work includes rain gauges, weather stations, field control stations, satellite systems, sensors in the soil, which allows remote access to distribute irrigation on their fields as accurately as possible. In total, Irriger has installed 2,300 irrigation systems worldwide, covering 400,000 hectares. Among the most popular agricultural crops on these lands are corn (124 thousand hectares), soybeans (92 thousand ha), other legumes (68 thousand ha).

Kernel irrigation practice
The speech of Oleg Kovalchuk, Leading Hydraulic Engineer at Kernel, was the most useful for understanding the practical side of using irrigation systems. The expert told how the Valley irrigation system was gradually introduced in one of the agricultural enterprises of the Kernel company – Palmyra in the village. Dmitrovka, Zolotonoshsky district, Cherkasy region on an area of 1.1 thousand hectares, and what features of this process had to be faced.

The 1st stage of irrigation was put into operation in 2013-2014. on the territory of 592 hectares and was aimed at restoring the pumping station and the underground pipeline network built back in the Soviet era. Irrigation capacity has been increased from 300 l/sec. up to 1000 l/s The company then installed Valley irrigation machines. The choice fell on this brand after a tender, which assessed the price, quality, characteristics of cars and, very importantly, service. The Astra company won the tender, first of all, due to the fact that its service teams are able to eliminate technical problems within a day. For maximum irrigation area, frontal machines were chosen for use in hybrid corn and soybean fields.

According to Oleg Kovalchuk, the company’s specialists approached the implementation of the irrigation system very scrupulously: “We installed rain gauges in every field. In some areas, 16 mm of precipitation falls, somewhere 10, and somewhere completely zero. In the spring, we determined the moisture capacity of the soil by flooding it with water, then carried out soil sampling with a drill and dried the soil. In the autumn, the soil was loosened so that there were no valleys, water did not collect, and cars did not slip. All data were entered into the technological irrigation map. Taking into account the phase of plant growth, we discussed the work plan with the agronomist. Watering should also be done wisely. Many people think that they will start watering and everything will be fine by itself, but there are a lot of questions. ”

The 2nd stage of irrigation was put into operation in 2015-2016. on an area of 511 hectares. It was decided to build a new system, since on the old equipment gusts happened with a regularity of once a week. The new system of polyethylene pipelines was connected to the main pipeline and successfully launched. Further, the specialists began to improve the workflow. GPS trackers were installed on irrigation machines to understand where and in what mode they work. If there are problems with the equipment, the dispatcher in the office immediately finds out the reasons for the downtime.

These measures also provided significant savings, since fuel consumption was 2.5-3.0 liters before the installation of the tracker, and 1.5 liters after. Also, fertigation systems were installed on the machines, with a fertilizer application capacity of 200 to 1200 l / h. As a result, the yield of Monsanto corn, supplied in heads for further processing at seed plants, increased from 3. 2 t/ha without irrigation to 10.66 t/ha with irrigation, and Prograin Kyoto soybeans grown for seeds from 1.87 t/ha /ha to 4.23 t/ha.

In an exclusive commentary to Latifundist.com, Oleg Kovalchuk said that in the near future he plans to expand his experience to other agricultural enterprises of Kernel:

“The next one will be Unigrain-Agro in the village of Brovarki Poltava region. We are starting the restoration of communications, the total area will be 2.5 thousand hectares, the first stage – 1 thousand hectares. Now we are reconstructing underground pipelines, and in the spring of 2017 we plan to complete the first stage, we will begin the installation of machines, and by May, we hope, the machines will be watered.”

Excursion to the field of Agrofirma Mayak
At the end of the workshop, the participants were invited to a tour of the field with an inspection of the irrigation systems and pumping station used by Agrofirma Mayak. Aleksey Vasilchenko, deputy director of the company, acted as a guide.

“We chose center pivots to minimize the human factor. After all, a frontal machine can be turned in the wrong direction, sent to a forest plantation – anything can happen, and one operator is enough for 3 circular machines. Frontal cars, in my opinion, should be taken if the field is longitudinal and narrow. And so, although circular ones cover 20% less field, they are still more profitable in operation. Plus, when there are frontal ones, there are more hydrants and the risk of their damage is greater, ”explained Alexei Vasilchenko.

In total, there are 64 thousand hectares of land in the Cherkasy region, of which 12 thousand hectares are irrigated. This is partly due to the fact that pumping stations are on the balance sheet of the state, and private companies that could invest in their modernization do not have enough guarantees for the long-term use of the result of their investments. The state also does not have the finances to modernize the pumping stations. Moreover, there is not enough money even for their year-round maintenance. For 6 months the pumping station exists at the expense of water users, and for 6 months it is not known where to get the funds. At the same time, the equipment that most pumping stations have today is not ready to increase the irrigation area. Therefore, this issue requires an integrated approach at the intersection of the interests of the state and private investors.

Irrigation system is a hydromeliorative system for irrigating land.
