Clever ways to introduce dark colours into your bedroom

By
Rachel Edwards

Little Greene, Furniture Village

As much attention as we give to colourful living spaces, and the ability of bright shades to invigorate and bring joy, nothing can beat the cocooning aspects of dark colours in a bedroom. Inky blues and forest greens are relatively easy to integrate into a design scheme, but dramatic blacks and deep reds or terracottas take a bit more consideration.

‘If you are keen to truly embrace the cocooning nature of dark colours, why not opt for a dark hotel-style bedroom?’ says Amy Wilson, interior designer for 247 Curtains. ‘To create maximum cocoon vibes, use black paint on all walls with soft brass wall lights and some crisp white bedding. Hang a pair of heavy floor length black curtains for a truly dramatic space.’

We’ve looked at some of our favourite bedroom retailers, from John Lewis & Partners to Dreams, to find the best examples of dark bedrooms, plus the furniture, accessories, and wall coverings you can use to create your own…

Dark bedroom ideas: how to add colour

Dark bedrooms needn’t be devoid of colour, quite the opposite in fact. Cooler tones tend to be a more manageable route for darker bedrooms – deep blues and greens are an easy base, and any colours you use alongside will really stand out.

Dark bedroom ideas: the dark feature wall

You should exercise a little caution with four dark walls in a bedroom – dark colours naturally absorb light and there is potential for your space to become drab. An interesting feature wall is one way to counter this, especially if you try wallpaper with a slight sheen or metallic motif.

Dark bedroom ideas: always use natural light

Don’t tone down natural light in order to better create a dark bedroom scheme. We would always recommend highlighting and framing the largest source of natural light in a bedroom – you need access to sunlight in the morning to wake you up effectively.

Dark bedroom ideas: warm shades

This fabulous bedroom is a masterclass in using warm shades in a dark bedroom. Deep terracottas, mustards and reds can all work effectively, just keep your soft furnishings dark, and most importantly, lean into the more luxurious feel of dark bedrooms by choosing heavy velvets and iridescent metallics.

Dark bedroom ideas: jewel tones

Take your design cues from this fabulous John Lewis bedroom and use dramatic jewel tones on your walls, furniture and soft furnishings. It goes without saying that any colour you use in a rich jewel-toned room will really pop.

Dark bedroom ideas: how to use black

Black is a popular bedroom colour despite being fairly difficult to pull off. ‘If you would like to use black in a smaller room, consider painting the woodwork – doors, architrave and skirting boards in black and leave the walls white for contrast,’ says Amy. ‘Don’t forget black will allow other colours to pop so play around with colourful prints and art or even a neon light for a truly dramatic finish.’

Dark bedroom ideas: embrace subtlety

Dark bedrooms can be bold and dramatic, especially if you have a room with wall panelling or traditional features, but subtlety works too. Soft greys are your best friend if you like a dark space but are somewhat averse to using deep and saturated blues or greens.

Dark bedroom ideas: playful pattern

Pattern can work wonderfully in a dark bedroom, just exercise caution with the breadth of your colour palette. Picking a patterned wallpaper or rug with a rainbow of different colours has the potential to jar with the rest of your room. We love the vintage, sepia-toned pattern on this Woodland Journal wallpaper from Dunelm.

Dark bedroom ideas: all over blue

If you’re looking for an impactful scheme, try an all-over colour, matching your walls, window dressing, and feature bedroom furniture. The light floor is an important design feature here – a dark floor wouldn’t provide as much contrast and lessen the impact.

Dark bedroom ideas: the gallery wall

As this fabulous forest green bedroom proves, a brightening gallery wall won’t detract from a dark bedroom. We love the addition of matching white mounts and frames for a bit of coherence – the more common use of different frames and eclectic styles in a gallery wall might not complement the more sophisticated side of a dark bedroom.

Dark bedroom ideas: Art Deco

Some calling cards of Art Deco style includes rich colours, heavy fabrics, abundant pattern and lavish golds and brass accents, all of which can be relied upon in creating a dark bedroom.

Dark bedroom ideas: rich and autumnal

Brown is often avoided in a dark bedroom in favour of more palatable tones like dark blues or greys, but you’d be hard pushed to find a warmer colour for your walls. It’s a great choice if you have a lot of jewel-toned soft furnishings – especially in red or blue shades.

Dark bedroom ideas: metallic touches

‘I believe a touch of metallic is necessary in every space to add depth and a touch of decadence,’ says Amy. ‘Metallic finishes also reflect light so work brilliantly in a darker scheme. Black and metallic is a perfect pairing and anything from silver and pewter tones to aged brass and gold will look beautiful.’

Green wall and sofa colour coordination – IMAGE: @emeraldterrace

1. Coordinate your sofa and wall colours

Although it may sound a little cheesy, this design idea can look absolutely smashing in a small period property like this one. We love how this rich forest green on the adjacent chimney breast and sofa covers fills the room with a cool elegance. Even in a bright spring tone, using this idea can create a colour palette from just these two items. And it looks ace!

Alcove art room design – IMAGE: @bergmann_hus

2. Use your alcove for art and wood

If you’ve got spare space in your alcove and want to branch away from traditional alcove shelving then the structure of the chimney breast and adjacent wall can make for the perfect area to frame your art hangings. This idea is also a great opportunity for incorporating a wood store into otherwise unused floor space.

Coordinating living room cushion and rug – IMAGE: @sisters_homestyles

3. Coordinate your cushions and floor rugs

How have we never thought of this before! Using the same material (or at least pattern) for both your living room rug and for your sofa cushions looks fantastic. It doesn’t matter what kind of decor scheme, this idea ties your interiors together and coordinates your textiles beautifully. After all, we do love a rustic cushion!

Antique Heirloom room design – IMAGE: @mimiemmettt

4. Make decor of antique heirlooms

If you’ve got old tennis rackets, skis, other sports paraphernalia or even antique plates in the loft, consider popping them up on your walls for a unique idea. If you don’t have these kinds of things laying around, try your local antiques shop or even online marketplaces. You can often pickup something that brings all the character of a rustic item for pennies and it’ll likely be one of a kind.

Symmetrical living room layout ideas – IMAGE: @homeonthebrae

5. Symmetry is key

We think symmetry is totally underrated when it comes to living rooms. If you’ve got the space, going for a double sofa set up is not only super social but it also looks divine. Importantly, this puts the focus of living room life on social interactions rather than the TV and it also frames your fireplace beautifully. If you want to change it up, you could use the same shape sofa in different fabrics for a cool look.

Existing storage in a living room alcove – IMAGE: @terrace. on.greenbank

6. Use existing storage in your alcoves

You don’t always need custom made shelving or cabinetry to make the most of of your alcoves. This home has used a budget-friendly storage unit to great effect. Painting some simple shelving and the fireplace the same colour as the shelving unit means is ties in nicely and costs a fraction of a custom made piece. This option tends to give far great storage and you can also swap it out if you’re up for a decor change.

Painted fireplace tiles in a living room – IMAGE: @laffsgaffs

7. Paint your fireplace tiles

Sometimes all a fireplace needs is a little spruce up. For the price of pot of (tile) paint, painting your fireplace tiles can make it look totally different. This homeowner has painted the surround and given the metalwork a go over with special spray for a full makeover but even if you just fancy a little weekend project, painting tiles can make a big different for a small cost. Just be sure your paint is fire safe if you’re painting around a working fireplace.

A bureau bar corner in a living room – IMAGE: @gemma.pepper

8. Create a bar corner

Whilst bar carts and drinks trolleys are super popular at the moment, this idea just goes to show that you don’t need to buy anything new to make a great bar area in your living room. Upcycling an old unit and adding some dazzling bottles and drinkware can do the trick nicely and you’ve also still got the extra storage in the rest of the unit to make use of. Best of all, you can coordinate your choice of paint shade with your existing decor and it will cost pennies for a change like this.

A colourful picture wall behind a living room sofa – IMAGE: @thepajaamahub

9. Hang a picture wall

Picture walls can populate a blank wall like nothing else and they can be achieved for far less than you’d think. Picking up odd frames at budget shops, charity shops or even a lick of paint on an old, unused one can make for a great start. And you don’t need fancy art to fill them. Try family photos, simple prints that you can print off at home or even try your hand at creating your own little pieces of art. The mismatched look works so well and can adapt to any kind of decor.

Old chest of drawers contrasting against a panelled wall – IMAGE: @our_victorian_home

10. Strip back an old piece of furniture

In the spirit of making the most of what we’ve got, try using a spare weekend to strip back an old piece of furniture. Whether it’s a chest of drawers, a book case, a coffee table or a storage chest, removing old paint and uncovering the heritage features and stories of old furniture can be so rewarding. This little idea costs next to nothing and also means you can imagine painting over a new colour with the next decor update.

A two-tone wall behind a sofa in a living room – IMAGE: @lifeatthegreyhouse

This neat visual trick can be achieved using virtually any colours than go with your decor. By painting your wall in two coordinating shades, you make a feature of a plain wall and add another colour into the dynamic. Using the darker shade on the bottom half of the wall both gives the bottom half a cosier feel and elevates the top half for an airy feel. If you’ve got a lighter existing wall colour, simply paint a darker shade over the bottom half in just one tin and an afternoon’s work.

A wallpaper mural behind a sofa as a living room design feature – IMAGE: @homeatvictoriaroad

Go big with your visual features by opting for a large scale mural-type feature with the ease of wallpaper. This home has coordinated the wall colour and mural tones with the picture rail and chosen the area behind the sofa to really make the furniture stand out. Choosing an understated pattern generally pays off as it doesn’t overwhelm the room and makes it easier to style the rest of the room but whatever tickles your fancy.

A chimney breast alcove in a living room – IMAGE: @theodores.house

13. Use your fireplace as a wood store

If a working fireplace just isn’t for you then you can still make a gorgeous feature of it by filling it with chopped wood to add texture, warmth and neutral colours to your living room. This is a cheap, easy alternative to other decor but still holds the same kind of rustic feel as a roaring fire. Depending on the kind of wood you pick, you can also fill your room with the smell of forests and the great outdoors.

A grand mirror to reflect living room design – IMAGE: @CHARLMIDWIFE

14. Try a full length mirror

Large mirrors are usually kept for bedrooms or huge rooms but installing one in the living room can work beautifully. This is especially charming if you’ve got a darker wall colour so that the mirror brings extra light into the room and choosing a frame that works with your decor is key to making this idea absolutely stunning.

IMAGE: @ahomewelltravelled

15. Go for patterned tiles in your fireplace

Why not change up an ordinary fireplace by adding some (tastefully) jazzy tiles into the mix. Choosing tiles that have colours which coordinate with surrounding wall, floor or decor shades means they can tie your living room colour scheme together nicely and also provide a little extra energy in neutral interiors. This home has used mixed patterns in the same kinds of colours and used them in different directions for a bit of fun.

A dark door with bright edging in a living room – IMAGE: @lifeofjillith

16. Sneak colour into surprising places

There’s such joy to be had in filling surprising living room places with colour. This little trick is fantastic, painting the edge of a door a different colour and coordinating it with the door pull. If you’re not one for bold colours in your home, you could try just going for a darker and lighter shade of the same colour. It’s an unexpected touch that adds just that little something extra to the palette of any living room.

Honeycomb shaped panelling behind a living room side board – IMAGE: @karenanita

17. Change up your panelling shapes

We love panelling in any kind of period property but the regular rectangular shapes scream of an opportunity to try something new. This home has gone for fun hexagons and they look every bit the part of traditional panelling. Painted in any shade, this creates a different dynamic in your living room and adds something special, even for minimal, neutral kinds of rooms. A coordinating door shade completes the look.

A living room wall light and picture ledge make a reading nook – IMAGE: @homeat104

18. A wall light makes a reading nook

Floor lamps and side table lamps look great in any living room but we rarely see wall lights at this height. Add a light to the wall just above your sofa creates a cosy little reading nook and means you can focus the light where you need it rather than illuminating the whole room. This is also a great energy saving tip for using only as much as you need to. Try choosing a wall lamp that shares shades with your furniture and wall colour so it blends in seamlessly.

A downlit living room fireplace – IMAGE: @1862_terrace

19. Downlight your fireplace

Whether you’ve got a wood burner or no working fireplace at all, shining a light down from behind your fireplace can create a brilliant effect. This works very well if you don’t need the fireplace you have doesn’t need a flue but even if it does, try installing little battery operated lights that can simply stick to the surface. Remember to choose lights which emit a soft, golden glow (warm white) rather than a bright blue light for best effect.

20. Add a kitten for ultimate cuteness

We love living room decor and nifty little tricks to elevate your interiors on a budget or add a unique touch to remember. Interior design trends 2022: 20 key decor ideas for the year

Interior design trends for 2022 are vast and varied. There are some new colors, new textures and new materials, but most importantly, there are new moods. For as we emerge from the last two years, blinking into the sunlight, the way we want to live our lives has altered subtly. How we want to spend time in our homes has changed – what their purpose is has shifted, and this has affected every decision we’re making about decor.

“How people want to decorate has recently shifted,” agrees the designer Lee Broom. “For a start, we’re all craving a better outlook, and part of achieving that is to condition your own brain to think more positively, which you can do by surrounding yourself with things that make you feel happy. Look at what we’ve all been doing the past year or so. Stuck at home, we’ve been getting experimental, honing culinary skills or  learning how to make cocktails, and – surprisingly – actually becoming more connected to a chosen few, via regular Zoom calls. Now, it’s about bringing that into the real world and, like in the 1970s, there is a huge shift towards home entertaining and creating spaces to have friends and fun times in. Cocktail cabinets that move and rotate, furniture that’s geared towards sitting together and being convivial, anything that is a bit playful and glamorous and dramatic.”

The interior designer Tara Bernerd agrees that there is a general move to sophistication, but it’s a more relaxed take on sophistication than ever before. “While that feeling of luxury remains very important, don’t we now all want something that feels approachable, too?” Tara says. “That you can walk around barefoot in and not feel worried about? I find that people still want their spaces to feel grand, but while we might turn the volume up in the living room with some real wow design, we’ll then do a chic media room where the materials and textures are less formal, more edgy, more comfortable. This totally reflects what’s happening generally, as people are finding they can be just as smart without a tie, and women have largely swapped their heels for trainers.”

This desire has filtered out and been interpreted in many different ways, but here are the interior design trends we think will be biggest in 2022 and beyond.

Rory regularly writes about trends for both the online and print versions of Livingetc. He is one of the very few people we turn to because he always has the finger on the pulse of what is happening. As a stylist and interior designer, he creates rooms for clients, meaning he has first hand knowledge of what people are asking for, what moods people are after, and what trends are bubbling up. He was able to put all this research and firsthand experience into action for this article.

1. Luxe outdoor lighting

As we all want to spend more and more time in our backyard, it’s no wonder the trend for luxe lighting has come outside with us.

The Lucerna Lamp, a design by Luca Nichetto, is the latest outdoor accessory to adorn tabletops this summer, from the Italian outdoor design specialists Ethimo. But this is no ordinary outdoor garden lamp. It’s chic, it’s contemporary, and it’s fully on board with this ‘new luxury’ vibe – products which embody a little of both the past and the future, in their makeup.

The Lucerna takes its name from ancient Roman oil lamps, however, also looks to the very latest LED lighting technology and incorporates a dual system with chargeable battery and pull out cable, all of which is wrapped in a protective casing of waterproofed anodised metal, which you can choose in either a steel or a brass finish. If you’re looking for stylish outdoor lighting then you might struggle to find better than this.

2. Wickerwork

The art of weaving with natural rattan, reeds, and certain bark material, wickerwork is quietly but firmly back on the design map.

And not before time. As people seek out design pieces and products which hold a story, and that carve a sustainable stance in the interiors marketplace, wickerwork products offer both elements of chic status and sustainable living ethos. From high end to high street, it’s making its mark

Wickerwork is particularly useful when it comes to outdoor furniture. It has the home spun porch decor vibe we’re all craving now, yet in a more elevated way. The Bohemian 72 Collection, was first designed – as the name infers – in 1972 by renowned Italian designer Gabriella Crespi. Her original designs have become synonymous with celebrity and now – if you can even find a piece – command seriously juicy prices (Google at your peril ).

However, now Gubi is teaming up with Archivo Crespi to put the collection back  into production. With a small edit of products to choose from, including the Lounge Chair, above, 3 Seater Sofa, Ottoman, and Lamp, each piece is constructed from the trunk of rattan and represents all that’s cool about 1970s wickerwork design.

3. Irregular rugs

Irregular rugs are striking designs that undoubtedly have all been created to own the floor. Not only do these living room rugs have an eye-catching print,  they’re also all shaping a new outline in design, quite literally, as they all sport an unconventional shape.

Whether you’re going curvy, geometric, or angular, these top sports all boast a little bit of ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking, and we’re ready to embrace it.

A particular favourite of ours is the Mala rug, seen above, by A Rum Fellow.

4. Plumped-up seating

Designers are demonstrating how a more relaxed style of seating designs can combine comfort factor and everyday practicality, but with high-level refinement and ultimate style-desirability. It’s the Italian makers who are leading the way with this look. Bontempi Casa, Edra and Arflex all embracing curves as the newest chair and sofa trend.

Above is the Marenco Outdoor, a revised edition of the original Mario Marenco design, by Italian design brand Arflex. Available in an armchair, two-seater, three-seater and pouf, it’s a celebratory piece for Arflex as it marks 50 years since the first Marenco model hit the furniture design scene. And it would also look drop-dead gorgeous in living rooms too.

5. Ocean hues

Echoing the reassuring color of the sea, aqua is set to be one of the hottest shades of the season.

Opt in with larger pieces of furniture wrapped in oceanic tones, or hone in on smaller accessory items if you just want a cooling shot of blue-green brilliance. Glass experts Lalique have announced a new curated edit of mantlepiece-worthy vessels which are perfect for propping a mantlepiece or an elegant little side table or cabinet of curiosities, all in this striking shade.

Named after the spiky perennial plant, the Yucca wallpaper design, above, from Sanderson offers a striking stripe pattern for walls. It is available in four tempting colorways – we are sold on the sky/green but there is also botanical green, grey/ silver, and charcoal/gold. Using special surface inks, the wallpapers shimmer in the light and offer eye-catching color for walls.

6. Night sky minerals

Collection Grande Marble Look in Sodalite Blu, Marazzi

There’s a magical new material trend on the horizon and it’s awash with galaxy inspired finishes. Dark blue, veined with white and pale blue streaks is popping up everywhere, from this vanity unit, above, to luxury table tops.  Defying anyone not to leap out of their beds in the morning Marazzi’s show stopping vanity unit created in a ‘Sodalite Blu’ hue is a feat of engineering. The ceramic brand’s ‘Collection Grande Marble’ replicates the intricate qualities and veinings of marble using 6mm porcelain, allowing for the grand impression of weighty slabs with efficient lightweight properties.

While teaming a deep blue Lapislazzuli marble top with an artistically forged bronzed brass base, Poliform’s Ilda side table is the essence of the rustic-luxe look we are all loving. It’s sold as a coffee table but don’t you think it’s jewelled navy hue inspires the perfect bedroom night-cap?

7. Contemporary Trompe L’oeil

Meaning literally ‘deceive the eye’, trompe l’oeil is an artistic device or conceit that has been in the artistic landscape for centuries – part demonstration of an artist’s skill, part delight for the viewer. It adds a bit of unexpected humor to the home, a talking point that will make both you and guests marvel with amusement, something that folds nicely into current living room trends.

Bonaldo’s New Perspective Mirror, above, plays with depth and perspective, giving the illusion of a room beyond the mirror and leaving space for the imagination of the person standing before it. The lines that decorate it are drawn freehand directly on the reflective surface and naively re-produce an additional environment than the reflected one.

8. Arches

Arch tiles by Livingetc x Bert and May

When we designed the Arch tile collection for Bert and May earlier this year, we sensed that arches were just around the corner, so to speak. And it seems we were right. Arched doors have become big news in extensions and renovations, and the gentle curves are softening the hardened edges that have proliferated for so long.

“Harking back to Roman times, arches feel very contemporary all of a sudden,” says Livingetc editor Pip Rich. “I’m excited to use our Livingetc tiles from Bert and May in my own bathroom renovation in 2022, as they add a grandeur while remaining friendly at the same time. You can’t help but relax in a space with curved edges.”

Use as a motif if you’re decorating, or as a shape for windows and doors if you’re renovating.

9. Colored concrete

Bathroom designed by Studio Ben Allen

Bathroom trends at the moment are very much about injecting personality while keeping to a monastic sense of spa-like serenity, which is where concrete comes in. The vivid hues it now comes in, coupled with the texture and depth it provides, makes it the perfect material for this space.

In fact, colored concrete is having a moment more generally. Seen in kitchens, on the exterior of extensions and used on floors, it is becoming the design world’s favorite material. Architect Ben Allen likes it for how robust it is. “Because the pigment runs all the way through, if it chips, the marks don’t show up,” he says.

10. Cork flooring

Forget those 1970s connotations of orange cork tiles, cork flooring is back, and better than ever. Because of its eco credentials and the ease of sourcing it sustainably, it’s actually one of the key flooring trends for 2022, available in a variety of hues.

Cork has natural thermal properties which means it is great for heat insulation and can be a much cheaper alternative to underfloor heating. Which means that its eco points don’t stop being collected at just the way it’s made. ‘It means a reduction in energy usage and utility bills,’ says Silvi Stoyanova, consultant for flooring company Bricoflor.

11. Technicolor checked patterns

Check is back, and this time it’s gone into technicolor. The popular print that just keeps giving, it now seems to have had a celebratory makeover, updated in bright tones and with added gloss.

Tate and Darby’s new pink and green checkered jute runner, above, ticks all our boxes with its natural jute texture, bold checks and its contemporary take on jovial style, ideal for to breathe life into your narrow hallway ideas. “I was thrilled to spot checks back in style as a key trend, because I love them,” says Farrow and Ball’s Joa Studholme.  “Use them on the floor, then take them all the way up the side of a bath. Be bold!”

12. Illustrated bows

Continuing with the celebratory theme, bows are here to feel like presents that last all year round. Is there anything more glorious than the anticipation of unwrapping something tied up with ribbon and topped with a generous bow? CommonRoom’s pink, green and blue screen printed ‘bow cushions’ and ‘unravelling ribbons’ wallpaper play on the idea of gift-wrap and elevate every room with the anticipatory glee you get from receiving a present. Rebeca Udall’s ‘Candy Bow Italian Linen Placemats’ in navy a collaboration with illustrator Isla Simpson are a smart addition to dinner tables all year round.

13. Portable table lamps

Let’s be honest, there never was much of an allure attached to the shelf tagged ‘USB lamp’ at the gadget store. Luckily tastes and technology has moved on from the sometimes gimmicky, most often uninspiring rechargeable lighting solutions into an exciting realm of stylish must-have new portable lamp designs by our favourite brands on the market, reinvigorating lighting trends for 2022.

“Without cables acting as a pesky anchor, it’s no surprise cordless lamps have grown in popularity,’ says Pooky founder Rohan Black. “Perched on a kitchen shelf as a piece to admire, placed in the bathroom to create a moody members club feel, styled as part of a dining table spread or taken out to your patio as the evenings draw in – with our new ways of living portable lamps provide that much needed all-round flexibility. ”

Luxury Italian furniture band Ethimo has launched a rechargeable table lamp to its existing collection of tactile Gaia lighting, below. Teak bases with colourful linen shades lend an unexpectedly rustic contrast to smart tech associated with portable lamps.

Travel-inspired motifs

Emperador 49500 wallpaper, Arte

Being taken on a trip around the world sounds, well, perfect. Thankfully that’s just the ticket that’s on offer with the latest Gitane Collection from wallcovering specialists Arte. Tibetan tigers, palms, woven baskets from Zimbabwe, and, the beautiful Italian flower fields – just a few of the intrepid designs on offer. However it’s this rich Emperador design depicting a bustling royal scene and luscious palms which fills us, in particular, with exuberant travel inspiration.

“These motifs tap into the quest for escapism, the desire for a bit of far-away-ism, that we’re all feeling, ” says Pip Rich. “And what’s exciting about these vibrant designs is that they’re moving out of just being cloakroom ideas – long a place for daring prints – and into the main areas of the home.”

15. Red earth ceramics

With its inherent warmth, red clay makes for a surprising twist on the more commonly seen white ceramics. Often red or ‘brown’ ceramics are associated with more coarse pottery, but there’s a finesse to this new wave of earthy vases and pieces, and an altogether contemporary stylistic edge, which make them avant-garde. Look out for subtle curving forms, an unglazed finish, and an appealing handcrafted raw honesty, ideal to slot into your living room ideas.

16. Wavy wood

Pause Coffee Table, Goldfinger

Kinked and curved, look out for the modern interpretation of the humblest of materials as a niche but appealing interior design trend for 2022. It’s a new wave. It’s time to banish straight-edged wooden furniture options in favour of the more fluid curvalicious form . Max Depret, director of homeware at Mauvais Garcon, says, “The 1970’s influence we’ve seen in fashion runways lately has clearly translated into the interior world, and we are very much inclined to see curves and colours coming back into our homes imminently. From trinket trays, vases, pillow cases, or our wavy mirror, look out for these extra pieces to bring out some je ne sais quoi to your home!”.

17. Glazed exterior tiles

Injecting a bright burst of colour that contrasts with traditional brickwork, glazed external tiles provide an eye-catching cladding solution for modern home extension ideas. This stylish finish comes with many practical benefits, too; it’s durable, requires little upkeep and offers an impressive service life of 150 plus years.

‘Glazed exteriors are unexpected and joyful, breaking the norms of London house refurbishments,’ says Melissa Beasley, director at Beasley Dickson Architects. ‘They satisfy the demand for decorative facades, providing an opportunity for a unique, crafted and personalised exterior.’

18. Gothic glassware

Cocktail hour is being shaken – not stirred – by a new take on what glassware you should be choosing. Everyone from Tom Dixon to Waterford Crystal has designed smoked vessels that feel resilient yet elegant, grown up but contemporary.

This fits into the cocktail trend Lee Broom spoke about at the top of the page, about wanting to entertain friends with style.

19. Cocooning furniture

(Image credit: Pacha lounge chair by Pierre Paulin 1975, by Gubi, at Viaduct )

Where home decor trends are concerned, cool cocooning has been gaining pace for a while growing rapidly for 2022. Squishy sofa trends, curvy shapes and snuggly fabrics are hot right now.

“There has been a shift in what customers are looking for some time now – more ‘homely’ comfort seating with deep cushions and more curves generally – a place to lay down as much as to sit,’ says James Mair, Founder, Viaduct.

“Comfort, cocooning and creating one’s own world whether it is La Dolce Vita of the Italians or the hygge of the Danes is a key theme.”

20. Mediterranean good vibes

Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana has been setting the style agenda for years. Cherry prints, gothic lace, and now blue and white good time vibes.

With its crisp yet classic color combination, Dolce & Gabbana’s Blu Mediterraneo collection evokes the feeling of lazy summer holidays. Now you can enjoy it all year round thanks to pieces which make a statement but remain effortlessly chic. Take your pick from the beautifully crafted pieces including the Giacinto armchair, with  its dark stained oak legs and chrome feet, the stylish Atena coffee table and the metal structured  Era lamp set. Or simply take them all.

What is the decorating trend for 2022?

Green, as a color, is not going anywhere as a big decorating trend for 2022. We’re seeing mint emerge in kitchens, olive come through in living rooms, and pistachio is perfect for bedrooms. The main decorating trend though is about texture, and depth of color. Can you use a limewash instead of a matt paint? Clay plaster instead of emulsion? This richness of pigments changes the feel of a space.

What is the color for 2022

Mustard yellow is taking over from terracotta as the color for 2022. It has the same sunniness, evokes the same feeling of Mediterranean vacations, and is just a little more versatile. Use as an accent to breathe life into dark living rooms, or go all out and paint your kitchen cabinets mustard. You won’t regret it.

Rory Alastair Robertson has a long-standing history working across the interiors industry. Raised in Morningside, Edinburgh, Rory grew up surrounded by classically grand Scottish Georgian and Victorian architecture.

His first appreciation for interior decoration sparked when his mother hired scaffolding and decorated their three-storey Victorian staircase in Farrow & Ball Picture Gallery Red, by herself. She then painstakingly gold leafed the drawing room – by hand – over a base coat of Sudbury Yellow. This was the era of Jocasta Innes and Kenneth Turner, when paint techniques and maximalist style were the decorating raison d’être.

With this inherited gene of creativity, Rory went on to study Interior Architecture at the University of Edinburgh, and later, Theatre Set Design and Architectural Illustration at The Rhode Island School of Design on America’s East Coast.

Rory’s foray with the editorial world started a decade ago at Livingetc magazine, a title which he regularly contributes to today. Specialising with a deep-seated appreciation for historical homes and interiors, Rory often travels far and wide to be inspired by unique properties with a fascinating history.

If he’s not uncovering an unusual National Trust property in the UK, then he’s seeking out a Neo-Classical clifftop villa in Capri or a Palazzo in Florence.

Based in London’s Shoreditch, working as a Senior Interiors Editor and Consultant, Rory’s portfolio of work is a creative melting pot of residential and commercial interior design projects and a plethora of editorial writing work. Rory is also Guest Interiors Lecturer at the prestigious KLC School of Interior Design in Chelsea, London. His most cosseted possession is a ramshackle Citroen Deux Chevaux, which he has reupholstered in Pierre Frey yellow and turquoise silk fabric.

The romantic English country decor style has captured the eyes and hearts of many people across the globe. The quaint, cottage style of English decorating can be a favorite for those who are drawn to recent captivating TV series like The Crown or the world renowned Downton Abbey. But what does authentic English decorating really look like? That’s what we’re going to explore as part of our Styles series today!

Let’s take a peek at some modern day examples of English country home decor and discover how they were inspired by historical English countryside charm! Before you know it, your home will look like the set of a Jane Austen-inspired film adaptation!

First, let’s get an understanding of some classic English furniture pieces.

English Roll Arm Sofa

The most classic English sofa style is certainly the “rolled arm” sofa which many American designers have copied. This slouchy sofa is comfortable and chic at the same time! Plush and inviting, this is one piece that is worth the investment.

Slipcovered Sofa with Ruffle Skirt

Another popular English sofa style is the slipcovered sofa, with or without a charming ruffle skirt at the bottom. This beautiful English home corner features a Colefax and Fowler Bowood print slipcovered sofa with ruffle skirt sitting pretty in front of a green Farrow and Ball paint paneled wall.

Chippendale Dining Chairs

Thomas Chippendale was an 18th century cabinet maker from Yorkshire England who popularized the wood back dining chairs found in so many English and American style homes today. This traditional dining chair is perfect for English influenced homes.

Ottoman as Coffee Table

Something I see very often in English country living rooms are tufted ottomans used as coffee tables. Sometimes they have books laid directly on them and other times, they have a lovely wooden tray to create a flat surface for a teapot and teacups.

Country Mudroom

Since it often rains heavy in the English countryside, you’ll need a proper mudroom for storing those muddy Hunter Wellington rain boots, won’t you? Take a peek at this gorgeous English mudroom for design inspiration. The walls and cabinets are painted in a beautiful khaki green, while the tiled floor helps water evaporate quickly. A bench is placed to the side to easily put on and remove your shoes.

Farmhouse Wood Table as Kitchen Island

I often noticed that many English country homes featured a long rustic wood table fit for a farmhouse in the middle of their kitchen! Country style dining chairs were dotted around this table, where meals can be prepared and food can be easily consumed.

Wainscoting

Wainscoting is an English paneling technique that dates back to the 16th century! It’s often installed on the bottom portion of a wall, but it can also be used from ceiling to floor. A good rule is to have your wainscoting go up about two-thirds of the wall.

So, read on for 16 ways to update your décor in an affordable way, without skimping on style or quality, and check out our latest Style Wishlist to discover the best budget-friendly homeware accessories on the high street right now!

Switch up soft furnishings

If buying a new sofa is out of the question at the moment, then that doesn’t mean you can’t change up the style and colours of your soft furnishings in the meantime.

You can find cushions and throws in colours and patterns to suit any taste in high street stores like Dunelm, Wilko and Oliver Bonas.

Lay down a rug

New flooring can be a costly expense, so rather than forking out a fortune for a real oak finish, why not cover the room with an area rug or a few smaller rugs in strategic places instead?

It will add a whole new look to your living space – plus your purse will thank you for it!

Upcycle your furniture

A £10 pot of paint is a small price to pay when it means you can do-up your old furniture to make it look as good as new.

To make all her junk shop finds match, Vikki painted them all in the same shade of Frenchic paint.

Whether you want to redecorate a chest of drawers or a dining room table, all you need is a lick of chalk paint to give it an upcycled upgrade. For a professional finish, check out our guide on how to use Frenchic paint here, or take a look at this tutorial on how to upcycle a dresser with Annie Sloan chalk paint.

Upgrade your door handles

It may be a small change but adding a new set of doorknobs can make a big difference to worn-out doors and cabinets in an instant – especially if they’re as beautiful as this colourful design from Homebase.

Repurpose a ladder

Have you got an old ladder hanging around? Don’t just reserve it for climbing into the loft – make a feature of it. Wooden ladders are the most versatile, but even a silver metal one can work, as there’s no reason why you can’t paint it to co-ordinate with the rest of the room.

Or, if you don’t have a ladder to hand, you can buy an affordable stylish wooden one from Cuckooland or Amara – they’re just the thing for quirky towel storage in the bathroom or using as a display shelves in your lounge.

Tile a splashback

Investing in a new splashback can be expensive, so save a few pounds and give your kitchen bespoke style by tiling it yourself.

Be as creative and colourful as you like – will you opt mosaics or metro? Understated or eye-catching? If you don’t know where to start, take a look at our guide to kitchen tiles for every style and budget here.

Paint your tiles

Bored of your plain white bathroom tiles but don’t want to spend a fortune on new ones or deal with the hassle of retiling? Then have a go at painting them instead. Frenchic has a huge selection of paints that are suitable for this type of surface.

Plus, if you feel like getting even more creative then you can buy some of the brand-new stencils and make a completely original design. When you’ve mastered it, you can even try giving your floors a makeover with this tutorial on how to stencil a wooden or concrete floor!

Organise with stylish storage

When it comes to your home efficient storage is a must.

Adding a few budget-friendly but clever storage solutions – whether it’s pretty seagrass storage baskets in your living room, quirky coat storage in your hallway, extra towel storage in your bathroom or even some decorative hooks in your kitchen – will help you to keep clutter to a minimum and completely transform your space.

Hang wonderful wall art

Whether it’s a textured wall hanging, a gallery wall or a few one-off pieces, strategically placing some unique wall decor around your home can make a big difference when doing up your digs.

If you really want to inject some personality into your space, why not be creative and make your own wall decor? Personalised initial wall art will look amazing on a feature wall, or why not have a go at making your own macrame wall hanging?

DIY with wallpaper

Save money on getting a professional to decorate your walls and learn how to wallpaper like an expert yourself.

Add personality with open shelving

A display of carefully curated ornaments and sentimental pieces is a cheap and cheerful way to redecorate with items you already have.

Go shopping in your own home for any forgotten treasures – look for pieces in co-ordinating colours and contrasting textures for a harmonious result. Need inspiration? Take a look at our favourite open shelving ideas here!

Shop second-hand

Remember, one person’s trash is another’s treasure, so you may be surprised with what you discover in second-hand stores. Charity shops are great for finding items that are still high-quality but for an affordable price.

Plus, if you shop second-hand then you’ll not only be giving money for a good cause, but you’ll also be doing your bit for the planet by recycling preloved furniture. If you can’t find exactly what you want, why not transform your budget finds with some clever upcycling hacks? This guide shows you how to upcycle bargain buys into chic accessories!

Create a feature with paint

Often people think they need to paint a whole room, but if you only want a little refresh then you can just paint a small area. Your eyes will be drawn to this update when you walk into the space and it helps breathe life into a room.

DIY painted wall arches

DIY painted wall arches have become super popular in recent months, and we love the idea of using a graphic shape at the end of a hallway or beside a bed to provide a burst of colour whilst giving your room an architectural and contemporary feel.

Chalkboard walls also make interesting focal points and work especially well in kitchens – all you need is some chalkboard paint and some masking tape to create a wipe-clean doodle pad!

Update your kitchen cabinets

Set aside a weekend and give kitchen cabinets a fresh lick of paint. To break it down into manageable steps, tackle the wall cupboards one week and the base units the next. With chalk paint there’s no need for sanding or priming so you can crack straight on!

Invest in some new houseplants

Bringing the outdoors in with some new luscious houseplants is the quickest way to give your space a lift.

If you’re looking for plants to spruce up your kitchen, look out for plants that can handle humidity and low light. Display them in interesting ways (check out these five interesting ways to style houseplants in your home) to make budget-friendly purchases look expensive and luxurious!

Living room design ideas – in pictures | Life and style

  • Dark vintage: Gunship grey is a great foil for decorative antiques.

Try Farrow & Ball’s Downpipe for a similar shade. Rose & Grey sells similar vintage leather furniture, and for a lampshade like this one, try BeauVamp at Not On The High Street. Or go to Zoe Darlington.

  • White floorboards and oyster coloured walls give this lounge its washed-and-wan look. All Farrow & Ball’s colours come in floor paint and this is a great way of giving your lounge an easy breezy look inexpensively. Be warned, though: exposing floorboards can create gale force 10 draughts beneath the feet.
For a rose sheepskin in keeping with the one on that pouffe, try Debenhams’ Mongolian sheep wool cushion.

  • Architect Helena Rivera lives in this Victorian house in south London with her husband and two young sons.

The 50s Penguin armchairs, by Dutch designer Theo Ruth for Artifor, were a vintage find (try The Modern Warehouse for similar). Rivera re-covered them in 1950s style Kvadrat fabric. ‘The chairs are designed as two interlocking pieces and the 50s sofa is Danish,’ says Rivera. ‘Our house is quite small, which forced me to look at more compact furniture – Danish 50s pieces are a natural fit.’ Skandium has similar smaller sofas such as the Poet by One Collection or EJ180 by Erik Jørgensen.

  • Rough and ready surfaces, reclaimed objects and quirky touches are the hallmarks of this small Victorian house in Brighton. In the living room, the chairs and sofa are covered in old kilims – SCP sells vintage ones. A table, made for owner, Stacy Sirk by Baileys combines a vintage mirror top, edged with fluorescent strip, with a dustbin.

The photographs are by Sirk’s father, mounted in street-found frames and displayed on narrow shelves made from reclaimed floorboards. eframe has an online service to create your own bespoke frame and mount.

  • It’s hard to believe that, not long ago, this light, bright house was a couple of dank, interconnected bedsits spread across two floors; before that, it was a garage. But now it’s a glorious living space in the heart of Camden, north London. For factory lights like these, try Retrouvius or Trainspotters.

  • Painted brick is great for adding texture to a room and dark grey is the perfect foil for bright accent colours, like that red task light on the wall.

  • By choosing warm colours and materials – particularly orange, gold, yellow, red, pink, teak and exposed brick – the owners have infused this lounge with cheerful zing. Sofas like these can be found at Ikea in the Karlstad range.

  • Olivia Brown’s terrace house in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, is a home of quirky contrasts. It mixes rich colour and neutrals, vintage furniture with designer paint and wallpaper, and is filled with flea market finds, the dustier and scruffier the better.

Brown, a sculptor, spends most of her spare time rummaging through car boot sales and antiques fairs. As a result, home renovation is an organic process, coming together as and when objects are bought.

  • This double-height space is all laid-back comfort. For a white sofa of similarly epic proportions, see the selection at Skandium, or – cheaper – sandwich together a couple of pieces from Ikea’s modular Karlstad range. You can pick up vintage chests like this at antiques fairs – try Ardingly – and add castors yourself (from castors-online.co.uk). The low-slung leather safari chairs are by Kaare Klint: try mid-century Danish specialists Elliott & Tate, Sigmar or Nottingham’s Danish Homestore.

Hung high, to draw attention to the lofty space, are a pair of antique antlers from Canada: try vintage stores, or Pedlars.

  • This three-bedroom south London terrace is small and the owners didn’t want to extend. Instead, working with architects Studio Octopi they enhanced what they already had. This open-plan living room has a half-wall into the entrance hall. The orange chair is from Twenty Twenty One (Cinema easy chair by Lammhults, from £846). The table is no longer available, but mix and match Serralunga’s Handy 45 tables, £159 each from Made in Design.

  • Painted a gothic grey (Railings by Farrow & Ball), with one wall papered in Wisteria by Cole & Son, this living room is filled with battered leather furniture and vintage lampshades, objects and frames.

  • Fashion designers Antoni Burakowski and Alison Roberts, aka Antoni & Alison, run their studio from their four-storey Georgian home in Southwark, London – all raw brick, exposed beams and reclaimed furniture. The house was rotten when they bought it. “The surveyors said, walk away, but we fell in love with it,” says Antoni. A handsome panelled wood front door (from Lassco), which leads directly on to the ground-floor reception, replaced an ordinary-looking door from B&Q.

  • This is a Polder sofa, by Hella Jongerius for Vitra.

It is set with clashing orange cushions and a grey one from Melin Tregwynt.

  • In this cool, bright living room, a Matthew Hilton chair and ottoman sit alongside a Ribbon stool by Nendo for Cappellini (found on ebay), and an old Habitat rug.

  • This living room is all about showcasing mid-century design, including Hans Wegner’s brown Ox Chair, Wegner’s electric-blue Papa Bear Chair (try the Danish design store), and a glossy yellow coffee table, a one-off by David Restorick.

  • The ordinary and the extraordinary exist side by side in Isabelle Puech’s Paris apartment – a converted carousel workshop in the 9th arrondissement, where merry-go-round horses were once repaired. The upper reaches of this vast, double-height space are accessed via a rusting spiral staircase, and three large, first world war battlefield medical kits – found, like much else, in the flea markets of Vanves and St-Ouen – are used as seating. Metal girders and factory lighting add to the industrial air, which is only softened by a wooden rocking chair.

  • These acid-yellow walls have a distressed effect, which was accidental.

“I bought some runny cheap paint by mistake,” says owner Tamara Salman, who has worked as creative director at Liberty and for fashion house Prada. “It gave an uneven but textured finish, like you find in India.” Heavy black picture frames stand out on the walls (try Ikea’s Ung Drill frame, £25.53). The taxidermy is from Lillie Road Antiques, the rug is by Christopher Farr and an old chaise is covered in pink velvet (try Soho Three chaise by Richard Ward, in Kaleidoscope fabric by Margo Selby, £995 without fabric, from Wawa). The artwork is by Ray Caesar.

  • These plain white box shelves are made more arresting by colour-blocking its contents. The rug is from Habitat.

  • The floating shelves in this alcove don’t quite meet the chimney breast and contribute to a feeling of lightness in this white-washed room.

You can buy blocky floating shelves from Ikea, or commission a carpenter to make them bespoke. Just don’t complain when everything falls off the end…

  • A living room in which pop art meets pomp. The lounge chair, from a house clearance, was once in the bar of the QE2; the Warhol and Edie Sedgwick cushions came from TK Maxx. For a similar rug, try WovenGround’s new Spirale rug wovenground.com. The lips print is by Michael English try originalprints.com and the “gun” tray, far right, is by Piero Fornasetti – try eBay or Selfridges selfridges.com

  • The green paint on the top 2ft of wall, merging into pale grey, was inspired by the current trend for fading colour.

The grey is Cornforth White from Farrow & Ball and the green is Green Parrot, from Dulux. Instead of picture hooks, slim shelves sit at different heights to display paintings and prints, making it easier to swap and change the pictures. The trio of secondhand Ercol side tables, bought individually and in mismatched woods, are painted in bright 50s colours.

  • In design expert Cathy Strongman’s minimal living room minimal much comes from London – the Sax coffee table by Terence Woodgate is an ex-display model, the G-Plan sideboard is from second-hand shop Pictures & Light in Stoke Newington and the Van Amburgh side table was found at Thorsten Van Elten. The black CABI U sideboard is from the Danish shop HAY as is the Little Nobody chair created by Komplot out of recycled plastic bottles.

The wooden set of London landmarks on the window sill are from Muji.

Settlement Reserve | Halloween Home Decor Ideas | Magazine about life outside the city

Halloween has already become an international holiday, which is celebrated every year on October 31st. Initially, it originated on the territory of modern Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but at the end of the 20th century it began to spread and took root even in the countries of Asia, Europe and Russia. Colorful attributes, costumes, interesting surroundings made Halloween popular.

On this day, it is customary not only to dress up yourself, but also to decorate your house in an interesting way. In the USA, they even hold various contests among those who actively decorate their homes. The main places for decorating a country house are windows, a porch and a courtyard.

All the most sinister and creepy items will look appropriate and creative this holiday. The basic set with which you can decorate the house is pumpkins, artificial poutine, candles. You can carve a Halloween symbol from a pumpkin and place a candle or lantern inside. You can also decorate the house with plain paper by making a garland with silhouettes of pumpkins, bats, ghosts again. If you still have wigs and masks left from the masquerades, then they can also come in handy on October 31 to make a creepy scarecrow that you can decorate the yard with.

Ordinary old sheets can be used to imitate ghosts, which are also attributes of the holiday. They can be made not only from a sheet, but from ordinary balls or white plastic bottles, drawing eyes and mouth on them – it all depends on your imagination. Almost every country dweller has a broom in the household, which can be beaten as a means of transportation for a witch, simply decorating and a creepy attribute will be ready for Halloween.

After the harvesting season, many have left various defective jars, for example, which can be filled with colored detergent or other interesting objects, liquids, thereby imitating various potions.

When you have your own country house, the fantasy of how to decorate, decorate and improve it can work endlessly. And if you also have a lot of design and landscape ideas, but so far there is no ideal place where you can implement all this, we suggest signing up for an excursion to the Zapovednik group of villages. The village, surrounded by a century-old forest, is located 23 km from the border of Yekaterinburg along the Chelyabinsk tract, Sysertsky district. New engineering networks, developed infrastructure and pristine nature are successfully combined in one place.

is all about the style of an English house. Photos, ideas

English style (English style) is a mixture of refined elegance and luxury, quality, moderation of forms, restraint and attention to every detail. This is considered to be the attributes of aristocracy. The English interior evokes a sense of well-being and tranquility. It is suitable for people who care about comfort and tranquility in the house. People who choose this style honor old traditions and values.

English interior – the origins of the Anglo style

The traditional style of the United Kingdom was the result of a mixture of Georgian style, which mixed elements of rococo and classicism, and Victorian, which combined classical features with exotic and gothic. As a legacy from the Georgian era, the interior of an English house received precise proportions, harmony and a sense of proportion.

The Victorian era brought luxury and vibrant colors. Such a mixture creates, albeit a strict, but very cozy interior.

Living rooms in England cannot be imagined without 3 components: a fireplace, a heavy chair, and a bookcase.

The fireplace is a mandatory item in English homes, although it has lost its main function of heating the room. Modern heating appliances cannot replace the flashes of fire and the soft light of the flame that spreads around the room. Traditionally, the fireplace is made high (from the middle of the wall and above), decorated with marble tiles, granite and wood inserts.

Electric fireplace is a modern alternative to traditional fireplaces. It does not have the flaws that ordinary wood-burning samples have: the accumulation of soot, soot, periodic smoke, the need to harvest logs and clean ash, and a high fire hazard. Electrical appliances, even in urban apartments, manage to create the impression of a live fire thanks to 3D effects.

A massive armchair is a mandatory attribute in the living room. This item has a high back with ledges at the top, for which the British nicknamed it “grandfather’s chair” or “armchair with wings.” In Russia, it is usually called chimney, eared or Voltaire. In the UK, this item served for the elderly, and special “ears” on the back reliably protected from the wind from the window cracks. It seems to collect heat and wrap it around the person sitting, while protecting it from drafts and sparks. The perfect place to relax by the fire!

There was a bookcase in every home in Great Britain, because the choice of entertainment in past centuries was small, and books took up free time and entertained. The rack should fit on the entire space of the wall (from ceiling to floor) and be with non-glazed (open) shelves. Shelves should be full of books: a real library!

English interior – important style elements

Do not think that this style is only possible for houses with spacious rooms. Typical flats in Britain 19For centuries, they had an area similar to the “Khrushchev” buildings, since it was difficult to heat a large room with a fireplace, and the climate in foggy Albion is not hot. Therefore, you can create a decor in the spirit of the best traditions of Britain in an ordinary apartment, the main thing is to take into account the specifics of this design direction.

              Tree – to be!

There is not enough wood in British dwellings, and refined species (walnut, beech, mahogany, bog oak). The parquet is made of oak, the walls are with wooden panels, the cornices and skirting boards are also made of this material. Large doors are the finishing touch.

              English interior and luxury furnishings

The furniture that decorates English-style houses is made of expensive types of wood. There is a lot of furniture, it seems that the room is crowded. If this is a dining room, then the center is occupied by a round / oval dining table and chairs. It is customary to place the sofa and armchairs in the center, and not under the wall, as in a modern interior.

Upholstered furniture enjoys special love. There is also a lot of it: these are sun loungers, and the aforementioned “wing chair”, a Chesterfield sofa, and pouffes. Sunbeds and pouffes are upholstered with good-quality leather, textiles with a strict cage or romantic patterns.

Chesterfield is a sofa that has not changed its appearance for more than two centuries. The main features of the Chester sofa are diamond-shaped stitching, armrests and backrest, which make up a single element. The arms of the armrests can resemble a rolled scroll, the legs are small or completely invisible.

              “Invisible” walls

Walls can be covered with plain wallpaper, vertical stripes are allowed. Characteristic is the use of wooden panels, which can be many. However, they should be almost invisible – this is just a background that will favorably emphasize canvases in gilded baguettes or weighty mirrors.

The framing of paintings should obey the “reverse” logic: the more intricate the plot, the simpler the frame. “Lush” baguettes will complement the modest pattern.

English interior – it’s all about the details

And they must be in large numbers. All kinds of vases, souvenirs, ceramic figurines, family photos, checkered or knitted bedspreads, pillows from large to small, family relics, because for interior design in the English style, loyalty to traditions, especially family ones, is important.

But you need to remember that all accessories should look good and have a certain order. Antique items are welcome: they will turn the house into an old family nest.

Cloth gizmos are presented in abundance. Curtains – certainly chic, consisting of a curtain, a thin veil and frills. Laces with tassels, large drapery will additionally decorate the curtains.

Pillows are placed on upholstered furniture, as well as window sills. There are beautiful tablecloths on the tables, beds are curtained with canopies.

The interior of the apartments in England excludes bright light. It is better to replace powerful light sources with sconces, floor lamps and table lamps with diffused light.

Modern appliances, in order not to destroy the overall style solution, should be hidden in special cabinets or niches. Proper placement of electronics creates the impression of a stop of time: from the noisy 21st century, you seem to be transported to the calm 19th.

              English style kitchen design

The floors of the kitchen, as well as in other parts of the house, are covered with parquet boards. A practical option is provided – ceramic tiles in the color of natural stone or tiles in a “checkered” pattern, the photo of which is below.

The walls are painted with a plain matt paint in pastel shades. You can stick paper wallpaper or similar to fabric. Part of the wallpaper can be plaid or striped. The kitchen apron is lined with light tiles in the form of bricks.

The set is made of wood, sometimes decorated with carvings. The table is round, around it are chairs with textile or leather upholstery. Benches also fit well into the decoration of the kitchen.

Only built-in household appliances, retro-style models look great. Plumbing is also stylized: a sink made of ceramics, and a faucet made of brass or other metal.

Textiles in the dining area are represented by tablecloths, potholders, napkins. The color and pattern of fabrics should resonate with the overall hue of the space.

The accessories are floral patterned dishes with images of dogs and horses, which are so loved in the British Isles. The shelves are lined with cookbooks, food jars, herbariums, clocks, and miniature paintings. Bouquets of fresh flowers on the tables.

British kitchen design combined with Russian decor elements. Tiled stove, samovar, Gzhel will reveal new facets of moderate design.

              English style bedroom decor

The decoration of the bedrooms necessarily includes floral prints and floral motifs. Floral prints are present in the design of furniture, walls and, of course, textiles. Plant elements are mixed in decor items: such a floral mix is typical for the English style.

Scottish cage is actively used in decorating the bedroom. It is also combined with floral motifs, with a strip, a regular cage, a houndstooth pattern.

Wall decoration of the bedroom includes colorful draperies made of fabric or wood paneling.

Victorian chic will completely convey the bed. You should choose high, with a large back and a canopy canopy at the head.

But the room must not be empty. Armchairs, tables, couches, cabinets – let it all take up free space. The walls should be occupied with shelves with books, lamps, drawings. English interiors, photos of which are below, are an example of this kind of furniture.

              Bathroom decoration

Tradition calls for a combination of natural panels and painted or wallpapered areas in the wall decoration. Tiled tiles are not entirely appropriate, but if the choice fell on her, then it is better to choose a pattern that imitates classic wallpaper.

The stiffness of the British dictates to decorators to make floors in the bathroom from natural wood. As an alternative, laminate has proven itself well. Another idea is a black and white “checkerboard” of small tiles on the floor.

Plumbing is very aristocratic. The bath must certainly stand on large curved legs. Fittings in copper or bronze color complement the sink, toilet and bidet.

The furniture is made of wood. But, given the humidity of the bathroom, you can replace the material with plastic with a printed pattern.

Decorative small things are also placed in this place. Large frames on mirrors, golden hooks and towel rails, prints, flower pots are great ways to decorate a room.

Some may find England’s decorating style old-fashioned, but classic lovers will love it. Stylish and discreet, it will create home comfort in your apartments.

Modern English style trends in interior design. Interior design in English style Apartment design in English and Scottish style

English style interior design is the general term for the various trends in design and architecture that have developed in the UK from the Middle Ages to the present day. The British style can be attracted by elegant restraint, classic luxury, high quality materials, the presence of many decorative elements in the absence of flashy accents. In its finished form, it is an example of elegance and good taste. But to recreate it in its entirety, a significant investment is required.

The color palette usually consists of three or four colors that make the room cozy and inviting. Colors can be either bright or muted. Modern English style in the interior is distinguished by many romantic patterns and floral prints. Also, the British are fans of muted red. It can be found on carpets and rugs in a large cage. White cabinets are quite popular.

              Fabric selection

There is an abundance of different fabrics here. Soft sofas upholstered in plush or leather, corrugated fabric pillows and lace window curtains look absolutely harmonious. Floral or printed polka dot chintz and damask are the most popular materials. The interesting thing is that all of them can be combined in one room, where large prints are usually combined with small ones.

              Furniture

The classic English style in the interior is represented by Victorian furniture. The predominant material is wood of a light or dark tone. It can be painted, stenciled and have an antique look. Tables, chests of drawers and bookshelves are usually made from oak, mahogany or pine. Accents such as handles on drawers can be made from brass. Sofas and chairs are usually low-slung and upholstered in soft tapestry. Soft cushions soften the hard look of wooden chairs and seats.

              Decor

English Colonial interior design features massive hangers, built-in bookshelves and china cabinets throughout the home. They flaunt beautiful objects and family heirlooms. For example, tea sets, straw baskets or photographs in luxurious gilded frames.

              Lighting

Soft, diffused lighting rather than a single main light source in the form of a ceiling light. Therefore, you should make a choice in favor of sconces, table lamps and floor lamps, which give a soft warm light. You can complement the interior of the hall with candles in elegant gilded candlesticks.

English Colonial British style décor highlights the functionality of furniture and objects that have an antique yet solid feel. The furniture is decorated with fittings: pilasters, beautiful handles and keyhole guards.

In addition, it will complement the design of rooms:

              • Carpet with spectacular pattern;
              • Gold-plated decorative elements;
              • English style tiles;
              • Wallpaper, lamps and windows in the English style;
              • Window sill cushions;
              • Richly patterned floor;
              • Furniture with curved legs.

This direction is an interweaving of centuries-old traditions of Great Britain with modern technologies. It will appeal to lovers of home libraries, the comfort of a fireplace, as well as porcelain collectors.

              Decorating tips

              1. Used furniture can be painted and lightly sanded for an antique look.
              2. Sofa and chair covers are an easy way to recreate the spirit of the houses in this region without buying new furniture.
              3. Small family pictures can be enlarged and hung on the wall. Old faded photographs can be restored by contacting a photo studio.

              English style furniture and furnishings

To successfully combine the modern interior and the design of the apartment in the English style, it is necessary to complement the space with the following items:

              Fireplace

It is difficult to imagine a true British home without the comfort of a burning fireplace. In the original, this should be a real fireplace, but it can be replaced with a modern electric one. You can convey the spirit of antiquity with the help of natural stone cladding of the portal or brickwork, as well as arrange the furniture so that it faces the fireplace. The atmosphere will be given by soft wool rugs around it.

              Chesterfield sofa

The interior of the apartment in the English style necessarily includes this piece of furniture. Coming to us from the 18th century, it looks modern, luxurious and fashionable. The sofa can be made in various interpretations: from dark chocolate leather to soft plush upholstery in various colors. Often this sofa becomes the brightest accent of the living room.

              Library

Every English home has a place for a collection of books. It can be either a separate room or a wooden shelving unit throughout the wall. It is recommended to recreate the English style in the interior of an apartment in the library with the help of a pair of soft chairs, a low table and a floor lamp.

              English style staircase

A staircase made in an aristocratic spirit will become a real decoration of the house. It can be made contrasting by painting the railings and the space between the steps in a light shade and leaving the steps themselves in the color of the tree.

              Fireplace chairs

A special piece of furniture is a fireplace armchair upholstered in velvet or genuine leather. An English-style room, as you know, breathes comfort and luxury. Therefore, all furniture should have soft upholstery (can be quilted) and comfortable armrests made of high quality dense fabric.

English style kitchen – modernity in an old-fashioned wrapper

The kitchen in this direction has a peaceful, comfortable and slightly “old-fashioned” feel. Traditional kitchens sometimes include a cozy English-style armchair. A sofa or comfortable chairs provide a place to sit and socialize in a homely environment. Ceiling beams, arched doorways and kitchen islands are typical kitchen features in this interior.

              Color

The interior of the kitchen in classic English style has the following color schemes: antique white, light gray, light yellow, soft cream and other pastel shades. Details such as curtains, valances, tea towels, seat cushions and tablecloths provide excellent opportunities for spreading bright color accents.

              Materials

The most important thing to consider when choosing a kitchen material is reliability. Therefore, in order to create a design that will last for many years, it is important to choose high quality materials. Mostly natural stone, wood and marble are used, furniture and kitchen sets from which are decorated with expensive gilded fittings and carvings.

              Cabinets and islands

Bring the right “antique” effect to the English-style dining room with glazed kitchen cabinets painted white. The built-in sideboard has two functions: it displays beautiful kitchen items, and it also serves as a storage space for them. Glass cabinet doors and open shelves filled with woven baskets, old teapots, Chinese dishes and other antiques add a touch of charm and coziness.

              English style crockery and accessories

In the kitchen, hang pictures that capture the British spirit. These can be images of picturesque countryside, farm animals or hunting scenes. Copper pots, old jugs, collections of teapots, cups and saucers, or antique kitchen utensils located on open shelves and cabinets will be a great addition.

The kitchen design may include a kitchen island surrounded by stools with vertical partition backs and woven seats. And for the work surface it is best to use granite.

Bedroom in the English style: an island of calm and comfort in the house

To convey the English style in the interior design of the bedroom, you can not do without a truly royal bed. The ideal option would be a luxurious bed with a high, canopied headboard and beautiful carvings, made of natural dark wood. The atmosphere in the bedroom will also be created by the presence of a variety of fabrics: curtains with drapes, bedspreads with embroidered small flowers, checkered throws and several pillows of different sizes.

Living room in the English style – the hearth and soul of the house

Living room in this design is ideal for a comfortable stay. Due to the climatic features of the region, a characteristic feature of such a dwelling is the presence of “insulation” details. First of all, a fireplace, as well as deep armchairs and sofas with high backs and “ears” that protect the person sitting from drafts.

The English style in the interior of the living room is represented by a dining table and a sofa located in the center. It should be noted that an important element is the bookshelves, which sometimes occupy the entire height and width of the wall. The decor uses an abundance of accessories: pillows, openwork napkins, porcelain items. As for colors, the British prefer cream, honey, dark red and beige tones.

What materials prevail in the living room with a fireplace? For the floor, a natural tree of dark colors or a laminate in a large cage is suitable, which will visually expand the room. The walls are treated with varnished wall panels, wallpaper, and fabric. On the floor you can put a light carpet with floral ornaments.

              English style bathroom

To implement the design idea, it is desirable to have a spacious bathroom. According to the design requirements, the pieces of furniture should be arranged so that you can easily move between them, which is difficult to achieve if the bathroom is ultra small.

The bathroom is traditionally decorated with contrasting black and white ceramic tiles. But this is not the only option. Walls can also be treated with wallpaper and wood. At the same time, the lower part is lined with wooden panels, and the upper part is covered with wallpaper with a floral pattern. The top should always be lighter than the bottom.

This classic style needs a special retro bathtub. It should be cast iron, with bizarrely shaped legs made of forged metal. The use of modern ergonomic technology in a bathroom inspired by the design of this region is unacceptable.

              English style entrance hall

The home of the true inhabitants of Foggy Albion can meet in different ways: from a huge empty hall to a small room with a set of the most necessary furniture. Already here you can see the British love for antiques, and the entrances to neighboring rooms are most often draped with heavy curtains.

              English style nursery

Children’s room should ideally be divided into zones: playroom, bedroom and work desk (if the child goes to school). As for the color scheme, you can use the traditional colors for decoration: cream, beige, pale pink and white in combination with more saturated shades (burgundy, green, brick color and red).

For a girl, romantic patterns with small flowers are suitable, and for a boy, an adventure or nautical theme will be ideal. A popular solution is also to use the colors of the UK flag. English-style children’s furniture usually includes a bed with lots of pull-out shelves underneath and a few closets.

              English style house

The house in this design looks like it came straight out of the pages of Jane Austen or a collection of fairy tales for children. As a rule, it has two floors and is surrounded by a garden. Stone and brick are used in the cladding, but they can be combined with wood. These materials provide durability due to moisture resistant properties. The facade of the house in the English style is massive, reliable and has high windows. The layout of the house provides for a fireplace.

              Tudor house

Such a house is easily recognizable by its symmetrical forms, a tower above the main entrance and a glazed veranda. The basis of the house is a load-bearing frame filled with clay, brick or foam concrete. The English style in the interior of the house in the spirit of Tudor means the first floor is made of stone, and the second and third are lined with light plaster.

              Country House

The main feature of the country house is the use of natural materials: stone and wood. Most often, this is a one-story building of the correct proportions with an attic, which is reserved for the bedroom. It is characterized by semi-circular roofs reminiscent of the thatched roofs of Shakespeare’s time. The sides of the house can be tiled or plastered. The interior of the house in the English style “country” includes a fireplace, and outside the house you can see a protruding chimney.

Also watch a video about one beautiful English interior:

The traditional English style in the interior (another name is Victorian) is strict and to some extent, according to the prevailing stereotype, this type of design is inherent in conservatives. Strict outlines, restrained colors and a huge number of decorative elements combine elegance, a sense of style and good taste.

              English style design

              English style home library

A characteristic feature of the interior is a variety of textiles: velvet, satin (a subspecies of “pompadour”), jacquard upholstery and curtains. One-color canvases are combined with polysyllabic woven patterns of the 18th-19th centuries. The classic bedroom in the spirit of England is traditionally decorated in cool shades of aquamarine, emerald and eggplant.

Textured wallpapers and textiles should harmoniously complement each other: cushions and chairs should be covered with a fabric of a similar kind with curtains, but with a more relaxed motif – stripes or circles. The rooms are decorated with ceramic tiles and wooden panels.

              English style interior

              Bright English room design

Characteristic features of the English style wardrobe are carved panels in solid oak, wenge or rosewood for wall cladding. A library with an impressive collection of books, protected from the hallway by a glass door, leather sofas, large-scale paintings with portraits of noblemen of the 18th century are essential attributes of a study.

The owners and guests of the house in the spirit of the old UK can see the disadvantages and advantages of appearance in an aged mirror with a massive frame. Kempas, hornbeam or beech wood panels, leather upholstery, potted saintpaulias and balsams will decorate the entrance and dining room.

              Nice English style room

              English style interior

The design of old England houses impoverishes a few details:

              1. Comfort above all else. Almost all living rooms have two small sofas, not one wide one. This trick is used to create conversation zones and cozy corners for residents and guests of the house.
              2. Vivid color accents. In everyday foggy dullness, British homes take on a slightly dull look, attention from which can be distracted by a wall painted in rich blue, red or orange, a bright rug.
              3. Everything is kept inside the furniture. For this purpose, the British use coffee tables, open shelving in the kitchen, thin cabinets and bookshelves in the living room and corridors.

In order to properly create an English interior in a house, it is necessary to calculate everything to the smallest detail.

              English style design

              English furnishing materials

It is necessary to talk about the arrangement of objects in an English interior only after the room has been renovated, the ceiling, walls and floor have been finished. The following materials correspond to the interior of the British house:

              • wood in the form of decorative panels, parquet or floorboards;
              • textured vinyl or non-woven wallpaper;
              • ceramic tiles for rooms with high humidity (kitchen, bathroom, pantry).

The best decoration for a traditional fireplace is marble or limestone. When decorating, expensive fabrics and genuine leather are used.

English style in the interior of the room

              Chic design in English style

Color filling of housing in the spirit of England

From classic British home decor to contemporary design, designers seek inspiration from nature. From the beauty and tenderness of roses, you can draw pink and yellow shades, from the meadows and hills of the countryside – pale green and green. A particularly relevant detail of the English interior is a floral ornament, which is created using pastel shades of orange, yellow and red.

To design a cozy living room, it is enough to use three or four colors. But, there are exceptions that are found in traditional English kitchens – pure white countertops of bedside tables and accessories in the form of vases or coasters.

Wall and floor decoration in a British home setting

What comes to mind most people when they hear the phrase “English style in the interior”? Possibly rustic details, flowers around the door and an ornament on every corner. But, for professional designers, this phrase provides much more.

Before proceeding with the design of the room, you need to find out the colors that are relevant for this style, more precisely, their location on the walls, ceiling and floors. British Housing Design suggests:

              • dark floors – brown, red;
              • walls must be patterned – floral, geometric;
              • ceilings – matte and plain with wooden beams, caissons or stucco.

It is important to use contrasts when working with an elegant British style home. For example, wooden walls in hornbeam, wenge, rosewood, terracotta flooring and milky white ceilings.

              Furniture for rooms

The main material for the manufacture of cabinets, tables and beds, like the English interior, is natural wood. Wood can be light or dark. The option of using a painted, stencil, artificially blackened material is not ruled out. Tables, chests of drawers and bookshelves are usually made from oak, mahogany or pine.

Furniture fittings can be made of brass, Tibetan steel. Sofas and chairs are usually deep-laid and upholstered in patterned fabrics. Neatly laid cushions soften the look of wooden chairs and seats.

Screen racks, built-in bookshelves and china cabinets throughout the home present treasured items and family heirlooms to guests at home. Next to them, on secluded open-type shelves, straw baskets and tea sets will be placed. Both classic and modern English style in the interior emphasizes the functionality of furniture and objects that tend to wear a worn but sturdy look.

              Lighting, decor and accessories

Nature has made a huge contribution to the lighting of rooms: lamps, candles and traditional chandeliers are used instead of sunlight that rarely appears because of the clouds. Foggy England style home decoration includes many accessories and details in the form of beamed ceilings, cladding and wooden floors.

Most homes have a fireplace, and a large family portrait usually hangs prominently in the living room. Accessories emphasize the little things that are dear to the heart – photographs, handmade crafts and pillows. Floral arrangements – freshly cut or dried – are arranged in long corridors, bedrooms and hallways.

Fabrics for upholstery, textiles and decor are matched to the color scheme. Curtains, curtains in the kitchen, bedspreads and pillowcases are simply obliged to be painted with floral patterns. This type of home decoration involves the use of natural fabrics – linen, cotton, cambric, jacquard. People who want to turn their home into a small, authentic corner of the UK should remember: every little thing does not have to look planned or designed.

Bring beauty, style and fashion into your space with contemporary details. But, only special elements can fill the house with comfort: photographs, hand-made, original crafts. The following tricks will help to make the interior special, sincerely warm:

              • used furniture can be painted and then lightly sanded to give it an antique look;
              • covers for chairs and sofas made to order or handmade if the owner of the apartment is a needlewoman;
              • Enlarged framed family photos will decorate the hallway walls.

Even greater uniqueness and uniqueness of the interior will bring decorative pillows embroidered with beads or ribbons on sofas, vases painted with pastel colors and tapestry panels on the walls.

              Basics and rules of registration

Elegance of wood and ornamentation of textiles, massive doors and high windows, cozy carpets in delicate muted colors and thick curtains, wide wooden stairs and fireplaces with marble decoration – everything accurately characterizes the interior design style of old England houses. Whether clad in natural stone or carved wood paneling, the fireplace is the central component that surrounds the interior of the room.

Sturdy wood paneling, textured wallpaper with traditional stripes or small flowers are commonly used to decorate walls in British living rooms. The floor is covered with stacked parquet, the ceiling is decorated with cast elements, sagging wooden beams and stucco. The color scheme ranges from warm shades of brown, scarlet and gold to cool aquamarine, emerald and ashy.

Textiles play an important role in British interiors: kitchen and corridor curtains, throw pillows and blankets are integral elements. Room furniture should be made of natural wood: oak, walnut, mahogany, ash, yew. In addition, wardrobes, beds and chairs look especially elegant: elegant carved legs, painted in warm pastel shades of brown, inlaid with stones. For the upholstery of sofas, armchairs and chairs, only natural fabrics are used.

Rugs, tapestries, porcelain and silver items, crystal chandeliers, candlesticks are integral elements of decor. A large number of pillows and featherbeds are typical features of English-style bedrooms. Another subtle feature is the canopy bed.

50 photos of interior design ideas in the English style:

The basis of English interior design is not only restraint and orderliness, but also reliability and continuity. Many houses with their contents are passed down from generation to generation. Antiques are especially highly valued. In order for them to retain their original appearance for a long time, people choose products from high-quality and durable materials. If some furniture breaks, then its owner will most likely repair and restore it, but will not throw it away.

British design harmoniously combines rigor and high cost. There is no pomposity and golden sheen of baroque in it, but there are many features that testify to the well-being of the owners.

              Origin of

The English style in interiors began to form in the 18-19th century. Restrained British were not particularly carried away by baroque and rococo, preferring restraint and classics.

The development of the genre was actively promoted by the Romanesque and Gothic styles. They are still found today in the castles of the Middle Ages. Roman and Greek styles also contributed to the development of the direction.

The early history of the formation of the English interior can be divided into two main stages – Georgian style during the reign of King George (1714 – 1830) and Victorian (1838 – 1901).

The second period is associated with the reign of Queen Victoria. It combines the classics, colonial style and minor baroque elements. After a while, the colonial style was formed as a separate trend against the backdrop of important geographical discoveries for the country.

All directions were formed during the rapid development of the state. Industry developed, people gravitated towards prestige and expensive surroundings. Overseas interior items were popular, especially from rare and expensive materials.

Years and centuries passed, fashion changed, and the interior of the English house did not undergo drastic changes. This trend is due to the loyalty of the British to traditions. Therefore, today you can see such dwellings in a little-modified form.

              Style Characteristics

The main features of English interior design:

              • Zoning of premises. The dwelling is divided not just into different rooms. Most rooms are also zoned.
              • The rooms may be small, and at the same time the building may have several floors.
              • Maintains symmetry. Doors, windows, rooms are symmetrical.
              • Large windows with wooden frames, mostly light in color. The British deliberately do not change old wooden windows for new plastic ones in order to remain faithful to traditions and not spoil the appearance of the building’s architecture. And this is despite the fact that many old-style windows let in cold air.
              • The main finishing materials of the English classics in the interior are natural wood, stone, leather, plaster, wallpaper with stripes or floral prints.
              • Calm colors without sharp contrasts – pastel colors, brown and its shades, white, green, blue, light red, purple, terracotta. A golden color is also used, but most often it does not prevail.
              • Mandatory attribute of the living room – a fireplace. On top of it is a shelf with decor and framed photographs (family values are important).
              • Lighting, both central and additional (floor lamps, candelabra, lamps). The light is evenly scattered.
              • The furniture is predominantly classical. It may also include elements of other European styles – carved decor, Gothic motifs, twisted legs, bronze or brass inserts. Upholstery made of fabric, most often with a small pattern, or leather.
              • Predominantly natural textiles. Monophonic fabrics are used and striped, plaid, with a floral pattern, most often small.
              • Decor used – paintings, photographs in frames, vases, mirrors in antique frames, figurines.
              • There is no carelessness and randomness in the atmosphere. The arrangement of furniture and decor is carefully thought out.
              • Is the style popular now, and who will it suit?

The English interior in the apartment has not lost its popularity for a long time. It’s not just that many of its adherents like to keep traditions. From the very first minutes, it charms with coziness, impeccable taste and comfort. In such an environment, you want to organize tea parties, spend time by the fireplace with loved ones, read an exciting English detective story, watch the weather change outside the large window.

English style in the interior of the apartment will distract from the hustle and bustle, which is unusual for the British.

All this together makes the direction relevant, as the atmosphere evokes emotions that are sometimes lacking in the modern rhythm of life.

The genre is suitable for those who like classical furnishings, symmetry and orderliness of objects. It will also appeal to connoisseurs of high-quality, comfortable and expensive furniture, which is not replete with pretentiousness.
For collectors, the direction is suitable, as the environment may include the placement of collections of antiques and other items.

It is advisable to equip it with owners of small apartments with small rooms. The area of the premises of the British is most often small. This is due to the desire to heat homes faster and better during the cold period.

                English Style Rooms

Consider the options for arranging a classic English interior.

                Living room

                • Decorate the walls with wallpaper in a pastel color (tone closer to sand), or with an inexpressive pattern.
                • Plaster the ceiling with white plaster.
                • Lay parquet in the color of natural wood on the floor.
Complement your floor with a natural beige carpet with a fine floral pattern.
                • Make a fireplace by lining it with natural stone, similar in color to the wallpaper.
Arrange a sofa area near the fireplace.
                • Upholstered furniture can be selected in cream color with a sand-colored floral pattern.
                • Place a wooden coffee table, optionally with a glass top.
                • Place a floor lamp nearby.

If space permits, add an English-style living room interior with a library area – high wooden bookshelves, a cozy and soft sofa, and a coffee table.

                Bedroom

                • Wallpaper in the English bedroom interior can resemble Provence – on a light beige background, an ornament in the form of flowers with green stems and light red buds.
                • On the floor – light-colored parquet or laminate, laid in longitudinal rectangular fragments;
he wears a cream carpet of the same color and design as the wallpaper.
                • Double bed with carved wooden base.
                • Cover it with a white throw and complement it with solid purple throw pillows.
                • Hang olive curtains on the windows.
                • On the sides of the bed, place wooden pedestals, preferably in a retro style, and on them – low lamps with beige lampshades.

As a result, you will get not only an English-style bedroom interior, but also an eye-pleasing harmony of colors, conducive to relaxation and sleep.

The English style in the interior finally took shape in the second
half of the 19th century, it absorbed the features of two royal styles –
Victorian and Georgian. This style reflected the way of life
respectable Englishman, absorbed the value system of that time and gave status to even tiny apartments and houses in England.

                Regularity, slowness, calm reading and
a long tea party – a purely English style of behavior in your cozy little
the world. And surely many would like to feel a little British, if not in their hearts, then at least at home: sit in an easy chair after a working day and condescendingly raise an eyebrow in response to the absurdities that occurred during the day.

It is actually possible to create a purely English atmosphere even in a typical Russian apartment, if
correctly dispose of each square meter and feel the nature of the style. We will help you remember its main features.

                1. Tradition

                Purpose of space in English
style is understood literally and with English precision: the kitchen invites to
cooking, the bedroom captivates with its comfort, and the living room contains all the elements of a traditional
classic environment – it is filled
armchairs, tables, consoles, poufs and banquettes, bookcases and
sideboards, and invariable easy chairs located near the fireplace. Arrange furniture in the living room, leaving the center of the room
empty – such a thought would never occur to an Englishman.

Also, you almost never see in English
interiors, various high partitions and separating structures: designation
and the division of space occurs due to lighting. Small light sources of different sizes, including the fire of the fireplace, make the room deep and enveloping. The compositional constructions of sofas and armchairs are of a closed nature, and if the room is large enough, then there are several such zones.

                2. Legacy of William Morris

The canons of the English style were set by William Morris, an artist and designer who created unique floral patterns for fabrics and wallpapers. Colorful and restrained at the same time, Morris motifs became the prototype of a recognizable English style in decor. Modern stylization has adopted the special English charm of Morris interiors – the floral pattern of the wallpaper creates an elusive romanticism, and the paneled windows add a magical mystery. This is how we imagine the perfect bedroom in the English style. As for living rooms and hallways, horizontal striped wallpaper has become widespread here to make the ceilings of rooms visually higher.

                3.
                Massiveness and elegance

The main feature of furniture in the English style is a combination of elements of classicism
and rococo: symmetry and static coexist with light curls of the legs
sofa or flirtatious “ears” of chairs. The capitonné technique, or diamond-shaped screed, makes one perceive a voluminous piece of furniture as sophisticated and refined. Made in this technique, the legendary Chesterfield sofa, massive and at the same time elegant, sets a high bar for the entire interior, like the production of Thomas Chippendale.

Carnation decoration of furniture and decoration of massive cabinets with carvings contrasts handwork with mass production, adds elegance and aristocracy to simple laconic convenience. And the use of tapestries with floral patterns makes bulky furniture weightless and more feminine.

                4.
                Veshchizm

The main thing in any room is not
space, but the thing itself, and the British are famous for the good quality of their products. Maybe that’s why their houses are filled with open shelves and sideboards with jars and vases, teapots and mugs, and their libraries are filled with good books and status office?

The nature and origin of things can be completely different, as the English style has an echo of colonial times. Things brought from all over the world coexist in one interior, but often the authenticity of the English interior is made up of paintings with classical paintings, antiques, hunting trophies and family heirlooms.

Tapestry hanging paintings and cabinets stretched to the ceiling take up almost the entire
wall, and if there are corners of free space, then they are filled with lamps
                or small shelves.

The hospitable host tries to accommodate everything that might interest the interlocutor and help support an intellectual heart-to-heart conversation, basking by the fireplace on long winter evenings.

                5. One whole

English-style interiors are full of silence and tranquility, due to which they can be called cozy and intimate. This effect is achieved through the use of wood as a bonding material for floors, ceilings, walls and furniture. Even the modern interpretation of this style suggests the presence of interior items made of dark wood, which sends us back to medieval England.

Nowadays wall panels and wooden ceiling trim are rarely used, especially in standard apartments, rather accents and hints are made with the help of old chests, geographical maps, globes and stuffed animals. Despite the variety of options for finishing and filling the space, a few characteristic details, with a competent approach, can combine all the elements present into a single style solution.

The English style, applied in the interior design of an apartment or house, allows you to harmoniously combine the luxury of palaces and trendy ideas, practicality and convenience.

The interior of a room in this style requires a clear sense of beauty and a scrupulous choice of small details and elements. This school is easily recognizable by the presence of standard characteristics inherent in this particular design.

The style of England in the interior of the apartment is based on the creation of wealth and at the same time restraint. It is considered the cradle of grandeur and aristocracy. The design of such premises impresses with a harmonious combination of all interior elements and an unsurpassed design taste.

Photo selection of successful Victorian house interior designs

Depending on the design principles and characteristics, the English style is divided into:

                • Original (traditional).
                • Modern.

Each of them has its own characteristics and characteristics.

Modern Cool Britain and its features

Today the most demanded is the English interior in the style of Cool Britain. Modern English style is a burning mixture of bold hi-tech, freedom-loving loft style, crazy pop art and eternal, old, kind traditions of England.

The basic rules for the design of this design:

The presence of cutting-edge details: a huge multimedia system, an extraordinary chandelier, a bright plastic chair. Such details will allow you to place accents. A mix of old and fashionable. For such a design, the most daring combinations are used. A good solution is to place an old Victorian armchair next to a modern floor lamp; on the bookshelves between modern printing, some dilapidated book of essays by English writers will uniquely fit (ideally in the original language).

Use of elements of modern English style in the house

The presence of red. Without the traditional British color, the design of Cool Britain is not correct and does not meet the basic requirements.

The modern interior of the room bears little resemblance to a Victorian apartment, but despite this, respect for tradition remains sacred for the British.

Therefore, the obligatory elements of Cool Britain style are:

                • Warm textiles.
                • Plenty of pillows.
                • Flag of the United Kingdom.
                • Telephone booth.
                • Double-decker bus.
                • Bulldog.
                • Flowers.

Compliance with all the rules of modern British style will allow you to enjoy the grandeur and at the same time soulfulness of such design.

Design of a room in the traditional style of the old UK

The traditional style is mature and rather elegant, requiring a lot of space and considerable waste. Therefore, it is rather problematic to create an English style throughout the living area. The most successful option for the interior of an apartment is considered if all housing is designed in the same style. Unfortunately, we rarely see such interiors. With the right use of the main characteristics of the London style, you can give the whole space of an apartment or house a British charm.

                Basic elements:

                • Chesterfield sofa.
                • Fireplace.
                • Home library.
                • Contrast ladder.
                • Fireplace chair.
                • Loungers.
                • Red color.
                • Checkered textile.
                • Floral patterns.
                • Classic faucets.
                • Natural wood.

Images of a red telephone booth, an abundance of figurines and photographs of modern Britain or a collage of bulldogs will perfectly fit into the overall atmosphere of the interior. And of course, the presence of the flag of the country is an indispensable element of decor.

The ceiling plane has a fairly large functional purpose. And this lies in the location of lighting, complementing the interior and visually dividing the space or increasing it.

The ceiling in the English style is decorated in light colors. For the design of the ceiling in a country house, it is allowed to use wooden beams made of natural wood.

Use of English style in interior design

What colors and shades can be used?

                Basic shades:

                • Snow white.
                • Dairy.
                • Frosty frost.
                • Pale yellow.
                • Ivory.

There are lighting fixtures on the ceiling. London high style allows for a single chandelier in the center of the room, or you can place spotlights around the perimeter of the ceiling. A characteristic element is a chandelier-fan with blades.

Our advice will allow you to create a stylish, strict design in the room, inherent in conservative England.

English interior design: traditional styles of British interiors.

Let’s start with the Georgian style

Georgian style is an important milestone in the field of architecture and interior design. The era began in 1714, when George I ascended the English throne, and ended in 1830 with the death of his great-great-grandson, George IV.

                Prerequisites

The Georgian style came to replace the elegant baroque, the luxury and excess of which had time to tire the British.

In 1689, the Glorious Revolution took place in England, as a result of which the ruling dynasty changed, and the new kings had to learn to negotiate with their subjects. At this time, new financial institutions appeared, trade routes opened, the British gained access to goods from all over the world. Changes affected leisure: urban space and public spheres of life developed. Many members of the nobility moved to the cities.

                Style history

The early Georgian period (1714-1750) was inspired by Palladianism, an early form of classicism. The style grew out of the ideas of the Italian architect Andrea Palladio. It is based on strict adherence to symmetry, borrowing the principles of architecture of Ancient Greece and Rome, and the absence of frills. The late Georgian style turned out to be more flexible. Symmetry remained obligatory, but the British ceased to be so strict about the decoration and decoration of the house, they allowed the presence of elegant rococo.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the tastes of the British Empire began to be influenced by its colonies. The first attempt to imitate the style of India was a house built in 1803 for Sir Charles Cockerall, who served in the East India Company. It was followed by the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, pictured above. [sidebar:|”At the beginning of the 19th century, the tastes of the British Empire began to be influenced by its colonies”|]

The main features of the Georgian style:

                Classicism. Strict observance of classical proportions, sophistication of the color palette, a minimum of decorations in the interior;

                Colours. The most popular are pastel colors: all shades of green, soft blue, dusty pink, burgundy;

Mahogany brought from Western India has become very popular. It was with him that Thomas Chippendale most often worked – a man who changed the approach to creating furniture and became the hallmark of the Georgian style.

                Furniture. In simple interiors, it was her task to show the status and wealth of the owners. Items were made from walnut, rose, mahogany, satin, polished chintz, silk were added;

                Wall and ceiling decor makes a huge difference in style. Despite the desire to reduce excessive decoration of the house, decorative plaster, wallpaper painting or the use of marble panels remained appropriate for the walls. Detailed plaster drawings were allowed on the ceiling;

Floors. Predominantly bare wood floorboards: in large rooms the floors were of expensive wood (e.g. oak), while in private rooms pine or cheaper materials were used. The floorboards were often patterned, painted or varnished, and the patterns repeated the plaster moldings on the ceiling and walls.

Principal representatives: Richard Boyle (Lord Burlington), John Nash, Adam brothers. The main furniture designers during this period were Thomas Chippendale, George Hepplewhite and Thomas Sheraton.

Chiswick House. A small summer palace designed by Richard Boyle, Lord Burlington to house his collection of antiques. Built in the style of the Palladian villa “Rotonda”.

Osterley Park was created in the 16th century, but in the second half of the 18th century it was partially remade by the Adam brothers. The changes primarily affected the interior and quite a bit of the exterior.

                Victorian

The Victorian era in design came during the reign of Queen Victoria in the second half of the 19th century (1837-1901).

                History:

After the rapid growth of cities and trade in the British Empire, the next stage came: the industrial revolution. At this time, the middle classes became a major economic force – especially in manufacturing and trade. [sidebar:|”After the boom of cities and commerce in the British Empire, the next stage came: the Industrial Revolution”|]

Trade practices improved, resulting in accelerated economic growth and rapid development of construction and engineering projects, and increased rail and canal networks. Now residents have the opportunity to live in one place and go to work in another.

The style takes its history from the “Great Exhibition of Industrial Works of All Nations” in 1851, which was designed by D. Paxton in the Crystal Palace. This show featured goods from across the empire and was visited by over 6 million people – a third of the UK’s population.

The era of mass production of goods has begun. Now the middle classes could copy items previously only available to wealthy collectors. The influence of the middle class grew – more and more people could afford a stylish mansion, which they sought to decorate as “rich” as possible to show everyone their status. However, copying and decorating was not always successful, and bad taste often “visited” such houses.

It is believed that the Victorian style went through three stages:

                1. Early, neostyle period (1835-1855). It was a period of catchy eclecticism, the comprehension of traditional styles in a new, often commercial way. Neo-Gothic, Neo-Rococo, Neo-Greek styles – in fact, a greatly simplified borrowing of the classics using cheaper materials. At the same time, all styles were violently mixed with each other. [sidebar:|”Trade and long-distance networks developed. Residents got the opportunity to live in one place and go to work in another”|]

The Palace of Westminster, home of the British Parliament, is one of the most famous Neo-Gothic buildings. After a fire in 1834, it was rebuilt by renowned Victorian architects Charles Berry and Augustus Welby Pugin.

                2. Middle Victorian (1855-1870). By this time, a riot of fakes, incompatibility of styles caused a lot of discontent. It has become fashionable to deny the previous period of time – anti-eclectic sentiments have arisen. Architects began to cry out for a return to simplicity and nature.

                3. Late period “Free revival of the Renaissance” (1870-1901). At this time, in other European countries, “Neo-Renaissance” comes into fashion – a mixture of art from all previous periods – Gothic, Italian Renaissance, Baroque. England picks up this fashion, but in its own way, leaving the eclecticism and congestion with decorative ornaments. [sidebar:|”The era of mass production of goods has arrived. Style Features

Furniture overloaded with decor: All items are richly decorated with incredible patterns, overworked with carvings. Mass production has led to the fact that almost all previously available styles have become easily embodied in furniture elements. The result – Greek Revival bookcases, Gothic staircases in a library, Rococo sofas and armchairs, Tudor chimneys could fit comfortably in the same room.

                Walls: Divided into several sections with the help of plinth, sheathing, panels, images and cornices. Wallpaper has become more important than ever. The variety on the market was enormous, from intricate, handmade designs to mass-produced models on cheap wood pulp paper;

Details: Plaster moldings (moldings) remained popular in this era. The decoration of ceilings and cornices with roses was especially popular. Fireplaces were also decoratively decorated: they were made of cast iron, wood, ceramic tiles and marble.

                Floor: Parquet made of wood, most often pine, was laid on the floor, decorated with a stencil pattern imitating marquetry, or painted dark to imitate expensive hardwoods. Corridors and kitchen floors were covered with geometric patterned terracotta tiles;

Overloaded with accessories: Statues of birds and animals dressed as people, pillows, embroidered panels, decorative clocks, oil lamps, wall sconces and mirrors, candelabra, porcelain figurines, furniture and piano covers – the list is endless! They joke about this era that the British had a talent for putting things on top of other things, and adding something else to them on top.

Key representatives: Richard Norman Shaw, Joseph Paxton, Sir Charles Barry, Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin.

D Cragside House suite designed by Richard Shaw. The center of the room is an incredibly rich marble fireplace decorated with cupids, garlands, and arabesques.

                English country style

                Background:

The most important trends in architecture and interior design of the early 20th century simply passed by the UK. While architects in Germany were tinkering with glass buildings, and in France experimenting with reinforced concrete, in England neo-Georgian and neo-Victorian country houses were being created and new technologies that did not fit into traditional design were rejected. At 1920-30 years only a small part of the buildings in England were built under the influence of Art Nouveau, and most of them are the work of foreign architects: Serge Chermaev, Bertolt Lubetkin, Erno Goldfinger.[sidebar:|”The most important trends in architecture and interior design of the early 20th century simply passed by the UK “|]

                History:

English country music developed at this time. Designers tried to meet the emotional and practical needs of the British in renovating country houses that had suffered during the Second World War. They used the design of the Georgian era, to which they added the idea of the home, hearth and family of the Victorian era. This is how the English country style was born, which quickly became popular all over the world due to the quality of the finishes and the proclamation of comfort. Style features:

                Decor. It can be both very formal and casual, but the focus is on functionality rather than appearance. The ceilings are decorated with beams, the floor is usually wooden;

                Colour. Colors can be bright or muted, but there should be plenty of them, as well as patterns, especially florals. Natural shades are common: pink, yellow, green. As a general rule, there should be three or four colors in a room;

                Fabrics. As in any country, there are a lot of textiles in the English style: from soft sofas to table skirts. Chinz, floral fabrics, damask are common choices and can all be found in the same room. The furniture is decorated with covers and pillows;

Furniture should be traditional, from previous eras, mainly from wood, which can be light, dark, painted.
