If you’re a true reefer, you know the thrill we all get when we rush to see our tanks for the first time that day! Now let’s talk about the guts and the development of my reef system. I’m running a very “simple” system, although when you look at the sump area it doesn’t always look like this!

I have a 180 gallon tank,

bashea series signature saber, nyos 220 skimmer and now lit by the most amazing lights on the market, Orpheks. I don’t run any reactors, I don’t run Gfo and I rarely use carbon unless I can justify the reason for using it, and even then the bag is only in the tank for a maximum of 7 days.

I dose several different products including Seahhem Fusion 2 part, 4ml nopox, kalkwasser for ph boost, and several micronutrients from the Red Sea. Everything is dosed by 2 Jebao dp4 dispensers with possible plans to upgrade to an Apex Dos system if their trident alkalinity monitoring is ever done.

Let’s talk about lighting

now as this is really an overview of how things have changed for me since switching to Orphek. Before running all of the Orphek lights, I ran a hodgepodge of LEDs with two t5 upgrade kits. It wasn’t pretty, but it certainly got the job done. My main light was actually a 48 inch v1 rifebrist.

I liked this light and for the price and the results I got from it, I think it’s honestly the best “value” light on the market right now. However, if you are a reinventor like me and take your hobby very seriously, switching to Orphek or radion g4 pro is inevitable.

So why did I choose Orphek over radion?

Well being a student in my late 30s was a big factor as I broke down almost constantly so financial reasons were there for me. From what I’ve read, one atlantic v4 covers the same area as the TWO radion g4.

But what jumped over the edge for me to pull the trigger?

BRS does a review like this for all the lights they sell including Radions and when I saw that in this video the Orpheks not only outperformed the beams but outperformed their Geisman t5 counterparts I was blown away.

The light even mixes and spreads throughout the tank and gives pure scores that have just come out of this world.

For example, my level at 3 inches below the water is a 700 quilt as measured by the top metric. It’s kind of a good Segway in the next moment I want to talk about these lights. Clearly, judging by the photos, I’m a huge head.

When I was planning to switch to Orphek,

almost everyone in the Chicagoland rhetoric community knew about it and people put in their two cents. One guy recommended that I keep an eye on my alkalinity by keeping a close eye on the switch as the light can “shock” my corals into aging.

In the meantime, my dispenser will still add alk, and this can lead to a crash. So I followed his excellent recommendation and I monitored the altar daily to make sure it remained solid. Well, after the fixtures were installed for about two days, I realized the opposite was happening.

My alk removed 1.5 dkh although my dispenser was still dosing 60 ml of alla per day.

Well, since then I have had to increase my lye dose from about 60 ml per day (standard dose under reef breeder lead) to 100 ml per day!!! Yes, that’s a liter of alka every ten days and I won’t switch to the ca reactor.

Increased Alka dosage can only mean one of two things: increased coral growth or increased calcium carbonate deposition in the sand/sump.

Okay, I’ll tell you it was the first one, and it was obvious to me that it was only a week later.

About a week after the lights were installed, I started seeing new INCREASED growth from all of my acres.

It wasn’t a subtle change, it was the most obvious change I’ve ever seen.

I’ve had a few acres here for four years where all they could do was encrust a little, with no other changes, all of a sudden little white growth tips started to sprout ALL OVER the whole acro, it was incredible.

This prompted me to write one of only two reviews I have ever written in my life.

Basically what I’m saying is it takes a lot for a guy like me to post photos and write a full passionate review about a product and to be honest I just couldn’t contain my excitement about the lights.

With the information ban in place, I feel it’s important to make this craze sustainable and I wanted to spread the good news to all reefers due to their hesitation about these lights to tell them that these things are the REAL ACTIVITY. After a few friends, they were shocked to see the difference in the bright color light that I now see not only in my corals but also in my fish!

and my tank just looks a lot livelier if you want.

Since I love the hard scientific facts about things getting better in my tank, I’d also like to share another unexpected positive from these lights, PH. Prior to adding these lights I was hovering between 7.8-8.1 which is not ideal.

However, after switching to these lights, my ph ran into an average of .1. In other words, since switching to these lights, my swing is now 7.9-8.2!!! So what does this mean? Good for me, this indicates that the awesomeness of these lights increased my zooxanthella’s photosynthesis capabilities.

Because these lights put these plants like cells in overdrive, it increased the conversion of co2 to o2 in my tank and therefore increased my ph. So for people who have problems with low ph, it’s a possible piece of the puzzle for you to try to get that number into a more acceptable range. #science Finally, but certainly not least, part of the scientific evidence is the coloration and general appearance of the coral.

For me I use the infamous but beautiful rainbow from my favorite coral shop Vivids aquarium.

If you are a real stick head, then you are familiar with this coral, and how much pain in a ** can be painted over.

I’ve heard people say, “If you even look at a rainbow’s rainbow, it will darken on you” to the point of owning these lights, which was my experience with this coral. To me, a bright rainbow always grew, but looked brown and shitty.

Since switching to these lights I have seen a transformation in this coral which is not shocking!
