If you had to pick one room in the home, you definitely want to feng shui your bedroom.

The bedroom is the most important room of the home in feng shui philosophy. It is the room that you spend the most time in, and it’s the most personal to you. Besides that, you spend many hours sleeping in this room. You’re in a more passive state when sleeping, so you’re really affected by all the energies in the bedroom.

9 Layout Ideas for Better Feng Shui in Your Bedroom

The bedroom symbolizes you. So, any feng shui changes you make in the bedroom are closest to you and they affect you the most significantly. Here are nine tips to feng shui your bedroom.

Here are guidelines for your best bed placement for good feng shui:

Be sure your bed is in commanding position. This means that, in bed, you’re facing the door while not directly in line with the door.

You don’t want any doors to open up directly in line with the bed. Especially avoid the “coffin position” where your feet point out the door.

Place your headboard against a solid wall, with space available on the other three sides of the bed (left, right, and foot).

Avoid placing your headboard against a wall that has a toilet on the other side.

If possible, don’t place your bed under any low beams, soffits, or sloped ceilings.

    Get a Headboard

A headboard represents stability and support in your life, and especially in your romantic relationships. The best headboards are solid, without any perforations. A headboard of bars? You, or your partner, may feel like you’re a prisoner with this set-up.

Be sure to fasten your headboard securely to the bed so you can feel the most support and strength.

    Declutter Underneath Your Bed

    imaginima / Getty Images

Take a good look at what you have stored under your bed. The items under our beds affect you while you’re asleep in a passive “yin” state. Whatever you have under there may also represent or create subconscious blocks in your life.

Letters from ex-partners may keep you stuck in your current relationship status. Shoes can keep you feeling like you’re moving rather than resting. Luggage might keep you on the go and never feeling quite at home.

It’s time to clear out the space under your bed. If possible, it’s recommended to have no storage at all under the bed. Then, the qi (life force energy) can flow freely all around and rejuvenate you while you’re sleeping. If you must utilize it for some kind of storage, stick to soft, sleep-related items like linens, blankets, and pillows.

    Reduce Electronics in the Bedroom

    Nicole Honeywill / Unsplash

On a practical level, we all know that the presence of devices in our bedroom can disrupt our sleep. If you have trouble getting a good night’s rest, try your best to keep electronics out of the bedroom. Buying an alarm clock and reading only books are two ways to keep you entertained and engaged without needing a phone or other electronics.

  • 05

Set up a Pair of Nightstands

    Anjie Cho

As mentioned before, be sure to have space on each side of the bed. Two nightstands are better than only one, as the asymmetry can be off-putting. It also allows for each partner (or future partner) to have their own space and storage.

They don’t have to match, but rather they should be complementary and balanced. It helps create space and harmony for you and your relationship.

In a nutshell, the best colors for your bedroom greatly depends on what you need. If you desire a little more passion in your bedroom, try adding some splashes of red. Earthy and neutral colors provide more support and relaxation. If you’re looking for rejuvenation and vitality, try blues and greens. Pinks and peaches are ideal hues for attracting a partnership.

Most importantly, sense and pay attention to what colors you’re attracted to. Sometimes we know exactly what we need if we just listen.

    Be Selective About Your Art

    KatarzynaBialasiewicz / Getty Images

The artwork in our bedrooms can say a lot about and affect our personal lives.

For romance, family photos are best saved for the other rooms in the house. If you’re single and looking for a partnership, avoid images of single people or objects. Instead, invite partnerships with artwork that depicts or comes in pairs. Of course, your style and taste should always come into play—respect that.

    Move the Books Out

JGI / Jamie Grill / Getty Images

We love books, but if you have trouble feeling relaxed in your bedroom, it’s time to find a new home for them.

The book you’re currently reading on your nightstand is okay. We’re talking about having stacks and stacks of books or a bookshelf in the bedroom. Books are active energy and stimulate our minds. For a more restful night’s sleep, try moving the books out.

Keep Your Home Gym out of the Bedroom

    Afton Almaraz / Getty Images

Workout gear is very yang, meaning it is a source of active energy. While this can be great in other areas of your home, it’s not very helpful in your bedroom. You want the bedroom to be more yin to help you rest and sleep, so it’s best to keep exercise equipment in another area of your home.

  • 10
    of 15

    Keep Your Work Life Separate

    KatarzynaBialasiewicz / Getty Images

Similarly to home workout equipment, the bedroom is also not the best place for a home office. Having your desk and work materials right next to your bed can make it harder to wind down in the evening, and can also make it harder to stay focused and alert during the day.

If you don’t have the space elsewhere in your home to create a dedicated office, do your best to create some separation within your bedroom with a curtain, folding screen, or bookshelf. If you don’t have room for that either, try covering your desk at the end of each day with a beautiful piece of cloth.

    Consider Your Bed Size

    Kam Idris / Unsplash

If you’re hoping to invite a partner into your life, make sure there is space for both of you. While twin beds are fine for children, they’re not ideal for an adult in a relationship, since there is no room for another person.

There is such a thing as too big, though. King beds generally require a box spring that comes in two separate pieces, which isn’t the best when it comes to creating connection and harmony between two partners. Look for a bed that doesn’t need a split box spring.

  • 12

    Add Vibrant Green Plants

    Beazy / Unsplash

Living green plants add vibrant life energy to a space. Keep in mind the lighting, heat, and humidity of your bedroom, and choose a plant that will thrive there.

Plants invite restorative energy and growth in all areas of your life. Be sure to choose a plant that works with the light that is available. Also if you’re new to plants, try one that’s easy to care for, like a pothos.

    Choose Bed Linens Intentionally

    Waiyong Tseng / Unsplash

You spend a lot of passive hours resting and sleeping in your bed, so it’s a good idea to consider what you’re surrounding yourself with during this time!

You can choose the color of your bed linens based on what you would like to invite into your life—see our above tip on feng shui–friendly bedroom colors for some inspiration!

    Bring in Fresh Flowers

    Annie Spratt / Unsplash

For cut flowers, choose blooms that you are attracted to. It can be fun to look up the meanings as well and select them that way. Be sure to keep the water fresh and dispose of the flower when they are expired.

    Cleanse Your Bedroom

Last but not least, make sure to take time and clear your bedroom regularly. You can smudge the bedroom or even just diffuse sweet orange oil to uplift for the best feng shui.

The bedroom should be a place of rest, romance, and relaxation—and nothing else. Since we tend to spend upward of eight hours a day in this sacred space, we should try to maximize its feng shui to its fullest potential.

Before getting started, I recommend a quick decluttering and energy clearing to bust through any negativity in the air.

Consider burning sage, palo santo, or cedar to cleanse the space of negative energy. This will ensure that you have a fresh foundation on which to build the bedroom’s chi (life force energy).

Now, let’s go over the most effective feng shui tweaks for your bedroom.

What to add to your bedroom to boost feng shui:

1.

The right color scheme

In feng shui, certain colors are thought to promote maximum sensuality and peaceful vibes in the bedroom and promote restful sleep.

A general rule of thumb is to opt for skin tones or muted shades you’d find in nature. Here are a few:

  • Off-white
  • Creams
  • Chocolate
  • Browns
  • Peach tones

One word of caution: Don’t overdo it on the peach! It is thought to be very effective at attracting a partner—so effective that we need to use it with care.

If you paint your whole bedroom in peach, chances are that you will attract someone, and then someone else, and someone else. .. Consider instead using peach as an accent tone on pillows, throws, and small objects.

While accent walls and wallpapers can be tempting, they should be kept to a minimum and also have gentle colors and limited pattern.

Crisp white walls should also be avoided because at night they can become too activating. Stark white is a color of the metal element, which is mentally stimulating and not conducive to rest.

Summary

In feng shui, certain colors are thought to promote peaceful vibes and restful sleep in the bedroom. Opt for muted shaded such as off-white, creams, and browns.

2.
The right layout

Another way to quickly promote harmony and relaxation in your bedroom is to switch up the layout.

The most important piece of furniture to pay attention to is your bed, and you want to make sure it’s in what’s known as the “command position.”

This means placing your bed so you can see the entry door when you are lying in it (here’s a more in-depth primer on how to position your bed according to feng shui).

Placing your bed on the same wall as your door is thought to make you feel threatened, like someone might surprise you in your sleep.

Speaking of beds, they should always have a headboard.

In feng shui, headboards provide a feeling of support in life. If you have a box spring only, you can get a headboard separately, but make sure to attach it very well to the bed so it doesn’t wobble.

When choosing a headboard, go for one that has soft edges whenever possible. Heavy cast-iron headboards or ones that have bars have that same “cutting” energy you’re trying to avoid in such a relaxing space.

Instead, opt for ones that are made of fabric, as they provide a soft, inviting feel. Platform beds are great too, but make sure that the platform has no sharp angles where you could hurt your shins.

Summary

Switching up the layout in your room is another great way to promote relaxation in your bedroom. Place your bed so you can see the entry door when you are lying in it.

3.
Pairs of everything

In feng shui, pairs are thought to promote loving, harmonious energy, so outfit your bedroom for two people—even if you’re not currently in a relationship.

Leave a little extra room in your dresser and nightstand, and present everything in pairs. That means:

  • 2 similar nightstands
  • 2 pillows
  • 2 seats
  • 2 similar lamps

Summary

In feng shui, pairs are thought to promote loving, harmonious energy. If you can, opt for pairs. That means, two nightstands, two pillows, two lamps, etc.

4.
Accessories that are meaningful and nourish the five senses

You’ll want to consult a bagua map to see what elements to pull into your space.

For example, if your bedroom falls in the health and family area, where the dominant element is wood, try to incorporate greens and blues in order to sustain that element.

After you consult a map, consider what other elements you could add that evoke the senses:

  • Smell: I advise using essential oils in an ultrasonic diffuser or in a candle diffuser. Limit it to a few drops of oil in diluted in water, and don’t leave them diffusing for more than an hour or two. They are potent! Lavender and jasmine oils are both calming for bed. If you have a cough, go with ravintsara or eucalyptus. Looking to amp up the sexual energy? Check out cinnamon or ylang-ylang.
  • Touch: In the bedroom, it’s best to go with soft, inviting fabrics when possible. I’d recommend velvet, satin, and Egyptian cottons for all sheets, pillows, cushions, and curtains. Your bed sheets should feel particularly soft to the skin.
  • Sight: As mentioned before, Earthy tones are really what you want to be seeing in the bedroom. Fiery tones (reds, pinks, and oranges) can also be nice in moderation. Again, these accents should always be presented in pairs. In my bedroom, you’ll find a pair of small pink Mandarin ducks—a traditional Chinese symbol. I love these because the story goes that the ducks were always faithful to each other. Find accents like this that speak to you.
  • Sound: The soothing tones of a small white noise machine can promote deep sleep.
  • Taste: While you might not want to bring food into the bedroom, make sure to keep a small jar of water next to the bed. Place some lemon in there and drink it in the morning for a quick boost.

Summary

Consult a bagua map to help determine what elements should be in your space that evoke the five senses. Essential oils can evoke smell. Soft bedding can evoke touch. Earth tones can evoke sight. Soothing white noise can evoke sound, and lemon water and evoke taste.

What to avoid in the bedroom to boost feng shui:

1.
Technology

In our busy modern lives, we spend a LOT of time hunched over a screen. So why not make your bedroom one completely tech-free sanctuary?

Remove all TVs, electronics, appliances, and phones so that they do not produce any energy around you.

2.
Mirrors

In feng shui, it’s said that mirrors in front of the bed invite a third person into the marriage. Mirrors are also thought to reflect energy around a space, which could disrupt your sleep.

If you do need to have a mirror, make sure it’s facing and reflecting something that you love looking at. (This may seem like common sense, but it’s something a lot of us forget about!)

3.
Paintings above the bed

Paintings and large photographs can produce that same heavy, threatening energy of a window or beam. Instead, hang a light, flowing tapestry with an inviting pattern.

4.
Nightstands with sharp corners

Nightstands should be sturdy but not overpowering or threatening. They should be discreet, ideally rounded, and lower and away from the sleepers’ heads. You don’t want anything sharp pointed at your face as you’re sleeping!

5.
Large, looming furniture

Swap out tall wardrobes and pieces of furniture that make you feel oppressed when you lie in bed.

I do not recommend keeping bookshelves in the bedroom, but if you already have some, make sure the books are well-organized and lying flat (horizontally), as vertical books can create a sense of being “cut.

6.
Plants

This may be a controversial stance, but in feng shui there is such a thing as too many houseplants—especially in the bedroom. Their energy is thought to be too yang—too strong and growth-oriented—and thus it can mess with the relaxing vibe you’re going for.

Leave houseplants, terrariums, and driftwood accents for other rooms in the home and incorporate earth shades in other ways in the bedroom, like as accent colors on pillows or rugs.

7.
Water

Keeping water features in the bedroom is a major feng shui taboo. No fountains and no pictures or paintings of boats on the ocean, rivers, harbors.

8.
Under-the-bed clutter

Just like you shouldn’t keep anything threatening above your bed, there shouldn’t be anything below it either. Clutter under the bed can create unnecessary stress and headache, even if you don’t realize it at first.

A clean, clear bedroom sets the stage for uncluttered thinking, so take the time to get rid of the nonessentials in your boudoir and beyond.

Summary

You’ll want to avoid electronics, mirrors, paintings above the bed, nightstands with sharp corners, and large furniture. Pictures or paintings of water, too many plants, and clutter under the bed are also not recommended.

The Best Feng Shui Bedroom Decorating Ideas From an Expert

Photo: Studio Ashby

Feng shui, an ancient Chinese perspective rooted in the belief that everything (including the arrangement of a room, like your bedroom) possesses energy, is a little like astrology. Whether you believe in it or not, learning its inner workings and understanding how it can impact your everyday life is somewhat fascinating. As it relates to home decorating, the right feng shui is believed to balance the energy that flows into and around your space and can have an impact on our wellbeing, relationships, and even our wallets.

Whether we’re talking new moons and planet alignments or bedroom colors and under-bed storage, the link between environment and energy is an abstract concept—but that doesn’t mean that its concrete implications in everyday life need to be confusing as well.

When it comes to arranging your bedroom, for example, feng shui consultants won’t demand you float your bed at a weird angle in the middle of the room and paint your walls four different colors (at least, not the ones we spoke to). Instead, feng shui principles are malleable. “Principles are meant to be flexible, which allows the mind more room for creative solutions when needed,” says New York-based feng shui consultant Laura Cerrano.

There’s another reason to adopt feng shui principles, especially in the bedroom: According to feng shui, how you position your furniture can actually impact your sleep—something we could frankly all use a little more of. Not convinced? Try out a few of these nine feng shui practices, plus 11 more tips, and tell us how you slept.

One of the most important things in laying out your bedroom is to leave equal room on both sides of the bed. “This is symbolic of creating equal space for both you and your partner,” explains Cerrano. “Sometimes the dimensions of a bedroom don’t allow for this arrangement, so holding the intention of creating space is essential. Even if you could only spare an inch of space between the wall and bed, it’s better than nothing.”

For balance, try placing two side tables and two lamps in your bedroom—one side table and one lamp on each side of the bed. Plus, symmetry is pleasing to the eye.

“The most common feng shui principle in the bedroom is to have a commanding position,” says Cerrano. This means positioning your bed with a clear vantage point of the bedroom door from the bed while avoiding being 100 percent in alignment with the doorway, Cerrano says.

The result? “This allows the occupant to literally, energetically, and metaphorically see and feel who and what opportunities are approaching their life.

The same goes for the ensuite bath, says Cerrano. “If you have a primary bathroom connected to your bedroom, you would also want to avoid placing your bed in direct alignment with the bathroom door.”

It might be tempting to treat your bedroom as a storage unit, but Cerrano warns against filling it with too much stuff. In fact, Harvard Medical School recommends minimizing clutter in the bedroom environment to improve sleep quality, which in turn promotes better health and aging well.

Mirrors in the bedroom can seem like a natural fit for many, but feng shui warns against overusing them: “There are varying thoughts on this, but the one perspective many consultants agree upon is that adding too many mirrors in the bedroom creates an imbalance of energy,” says Cerrano.

According to feng shui principles, mirrors have the ability to activate the energy within a room, yet the most important thing is to test this for yourself because every person is different, says Cerrano. “Clients I work with will sometimes choose to keep a mirror in their bedroom and tell me that they sleep soundly. Others will negotiate the principle and remove extra mirrors and still keep one while being mindful of what it reflects. Some clients love the idea of no mirrors in the bedroom or may just place a long mirror inside the closet door.” If you do that, Cerrano adds, “just make sure the closet is organized because mirrors double what they project.”

05
of 20

Cody Ulrich ; DESIGN: Homepolish

People sometimes avoid rugs in the bedroom because larger-scale ones can be expensive, but Cerrano insists it’s a worthwhile investment for your sleep: “Adding an area rug under or near the bed is another way to help ground the energy when sleeping and create a balance between yin (soft textures) and yang (hard surfaces).” Having two smaller rugs on each side can achieve a similar effect without the costly price tag.

06
of 20

bauer-media.com.au

A common place for storage in the bedroom is usually under the bed, but Cerrano believes it’s not good practice: “From a feng shui perspective, storage under the bed can obstruct your sleeping pattern because the movement of energy cannot flow evenly around the energy fields of your bed. ” For example, Cerrano suggests storing shoes in closets because otherwise, “they symbolize other people potentially taking advantage of you.”

The feng shui consultant recognizes that it’s not always possible to leave the area under the bed completely clutter-free: “If you do need to store items under the bed, be mindful of who gave these items to you and what emotional content you associate with them.” She adds that some items—specifically bedding, clothing, and towels—are better to store under the bed than others. A small number of books is also acceptable, as long as their titles and content are positive.

07
of 20

Brooke Holm/Trunk Archive

This practice speaks more to everyday habits than layout or décor, but Cerrano stresses that it’s nonetheless important: “Making your bed may seem small and insignificant, yet a greater development within your conscious and subconscious minds is evolving. This simple act becomes your first accomplishment of the day and it only requires two minutes of your time.

Making the bed every morning can kickstart an organized mindset, which helps reduce stress and increase motivation, Cerrano says. “It’s also a means of self-respect because it means you’ve taken the time to prepare your bed for sleep as your mom or dad may have done during childhood. It’s a little slice of self-love.”

08
of 20

bauer-media.com.au

Just like making your bed in the morning, opening your blinds before you head out for work may not be ingrained in your daily rituals, but it should be: “Opening your blinds and your windows (if weather permits) during the day is a wonderful habit to acquire,” says Cerrano.

“This is called letting the outside in. It helps to refresh the energy by allowing natural light and fresh air to filter into your bedroom. At night, close the windows and blinds as to keep the fresh energy circulating inside your bedroom when sleeping.” Even if you won’t be there to enjoy the natural light, let it stream in while you’re at work (just don’t leave your windows open and unattended—burglary is never good for feng shui).

09

You may be inclined to go bright green in a bedroom, but Cerrano advises against it if you’re considering feng shui principles. Instead, “pick neutral colors when painting large walls to not overstimulate the energy when you are sleeping. This could include beiges, cream colors, and earth tones. You could even include some cool blue tones. For smaller accent colors, pick colors associated with partnership energy: Pinks, reds, and whites. This could be implemented through artwork, small crystals (like rose quartz), organic candles, or bed sheets.”

The goal is to create a sacred and sensual space for yourself and to share with another—if that is your intention, says Cerrano. “The addition of certain feng shui colors is just one way to assist in the atmospheric rendering of good feng shui.”

Don’t align your bed directly with the bathroom door. Some feng shui consultants will say the bathroom is associated with energy drain, and suggest avoiding positioning your bed this way.

Similarly, “feng shui principles invite you to remove electronics from inside the bedroom: TVs, computers, and cell phones emit the largest amounts of electric and magnetic fields, which could disturb your immune system and sleep,” explains Cerrano.

The same goes for work-related gadgetry and papers, Cerrano says. “The bedroom is a place for rest, rejuvenation, and reconnection. Space can be tight, especially in studios and one-bedroom apartments, but if you can create a work area in your home that is away from the bedroom, it will help improve your quality of sleep.”

What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui is a philosophy based on the ancient Chinese system of natural laws, which are supposed to govern the spatial arrangement orientation of your furniture and décor in relation to the flow of energy (Chi). The word ‘feng’ is Chinese for wind, and the word ‘shui’ is Chinese for water. Together, these symbolise the flow of life that one should aspire to have in one’s home.

Contemporary Feng Shui developed in Western society in the 1970s. It is based on the psychology of how to achieve goals through a targeted focus on the different aspects of life as well as the classical form of Feng Shui principles which included Chi flow and the manifestations of Yin and Yang.

We’ve compiled a list of Feng Shui tips to ensure your energy flows in the right direction and help you achieve a good night sleep:

13 Tips To Achieve A Feng Shui Bedroom:

  1. Position your bed centrally.
  2. Invest in a king or super-king size bed and mattress.
  3. Avoid mirrors within the sight-line of the bed.
  4. Maximise airflow with adjustable blinds.
  5. Limit electronic devices and screens.
  6. Ensure your bed has a bedside table on either side.
  7. Use natural bedding and eco-friendly materials.
  8. Choose soothing, muted colour tones.
  9. Use candles and low-light bulbs.
  10. Keep all drawers and doors closed when not in use.
  11. Invest in a solid headboard.
  12. Move your bookshelf to a different room.
  13. Only have books you’re currently reading in your bedroom.

1. Position your bed centrally.

A Feng Shui fundamental is the concept of the “commanding position”, which refers to placing objects facing the entry door, but not in line with it. In bedroom Feng Shui, your bed should be placed in the commanding position as it is the most important item in that room and where you will spend most of your time. The best place to position your bed is diagonally from the door, so it is in your sight, but you do not look directly out of it.

2. Invest in a king or super-king size bed and mattress.

Feng shui is all about the interaction of humans and the environments in which they spend their time. As a big portion of that is where we sleep, it’s safe to assume that incorporating Feng Shui into our bedroom is a good way to achieve a more balanced life. Super king beds are ideal if you have a room that’s big enough. That’s because they give us the maximum space in which to relax and turn off from the distractions of the modern world.

3. Avoid mirrors in the sight line of your bed

While mirrors are great for making a small room look bigger, mirror placement can be difficult when implementing bedroom Feng Shui. It is most important is to ensure your mirrors aren’t in line with the bed as this will likely bring more distracting elements into your sightline. This doesn’t mean mirrors are a no-go for a high-Chi bedroom. Try to make sure that you can’t see yourself from bed and the mirror does not face out of the door – try a higher mirror for a good sense of balance.

A good idea is to place them opposite a window, this will help maximise light in your room without distracting you when trying to relax from your bed.

4. Maximise air-flow with adjustable blinds.

Nature is a key component of a Feng Shui bedroom and an easy way to incorporate the natural world is to ensure maximum air flow. This will not only keep your bedroom fresh and clean but will help aid better sleep. Check out this post by Fitbit for more on how fresh air helps us sleep.

A recent study published in the journal Indoor Air found that when people slept in rooms with ventilation—either with an open window or open door—compared to an unventilated room, their sleep improved, they woke up fewer times per night, and carbon dioxide levels in the room were lower. As carbon dioxide levels decreased, people slept more soundly and their awakenings decreased.

5. Limit electronic devices and screens.

Blue light is one of the worst offenders when it comes to preventing sleep. But when it comes to creating the right levels of yin and yang in your bedroom, it goes beyond simply the fact that technology disrupts our circadian rhythms. As Feng Shui centres around the natural world, anything technological or man-made can reduce the level of Chi in our environment and therefore start to disrupt our sleep and relaxation.

6. Ensure your bed has a bedside table on either side.

Balance is extremely important in bedroom Feng Shui and an easy way to create symmetry and balance is through bedside tables. Place one on either side of your bed and your bedroom will start to feel harmonious and achieve a greater level of Chi. Place a bedroom plant on each side unit and you’ll maximise the natural essence of your bedroom Feng Shui too.

7. Use natural bedding and eco-friendly materials.

Another way to incorporate natural elements into your bedroom is through the use of natural bedding. Look for natural mattresses that use bamboo or cotton to help reduce the amount of synthetic material in your sleeping space. These aren’t just great for improving the levels of Feng Shui in your master suite but are also ideal for temperature regulation as natural materials wick moisture better than their non-natural counterparts.

Get more advice on what to wear to bed for a good night’s sleep.

8. Choose soothing, muted colour tones.

Sleep relaxation is best achieved when there’s nothing in the bedroom design that stands out or draws too much attention. To achieve this sense of balance, which is also a key part of Feng Shui, choose colours and patterns which are muted and soothing. Pastel tones are great here. Soothing blues, pinks and greens work well to create a harmonious, distraction-free boudoir.

9. Use candles and low-light bulbs.

Go one step further than a muted colour scheme with the use of low-light bulbs and mood lighting. This will help create a relaxing ambiance in your bedroom and provide that sense of calm and quiet that’s so important to a great night’s sleep. It’ll also help create a sense of balance within your room, once again improving the all-important levels of Chi throughout.

10. Keep all drawers and doors closed when not in use.

To achieve a feng shui bedroom, it’s important to limit all distractions. Ensuring you keep drawers and wardrobe doors closed will help limit distractions when you’re trying to sleep or relax before bed. So, even if after a long day you jump straight into bed and realise your wardrobe is slightly open, it’s best to get out and close it before you try to nod off. Trust us, you’ll fall asleep faster – even if your brain is telling you you’re ready for bed and too comfortable to move.

11. Invest in a solid headboard.

A solid headboard will help increase symmetry and balance in your bedroom. But it will also make it much more comfortable to sit up in bed and read a book while you soak up your essential oils for sleep. Remember to choose one that doesn’t disrupt the balance of your existing decor and you’ll be nodding off in no time at all.

12. Move your bookshelf to a different room

Perhaps difficult for the bookworms and literary enthusiasts but books are just another form of distraction when trying to sleep. They’re also fiends for collecting dust and disrupting the balance in your bedroom so try to keep them in a study or spare room and only keep the one you’re reading at the time in reaching distance.

13. Only have books you’re currently reading in your bedroom.

Expanding on the previous point, it’s best to keep only the book you’re reading in your bedroom. This will help to minimise disruption as you try to sleep. We’ve all been at that point in a book where we think we might swap it for another but this won’t help your mind turn off while you’re getting ready for bed. Best to continue with the one you’ve started or at least leave the change until the next day.

Tips and Thoughts from a Feng Shui Master

Feng Shui master consultant Alan Stirling says:

‘You can sleep under a window as long as there is some wall,  and you can draw the curtains behind you. This then simulates a solid wall. However, you should never sleep against a floor to ceiling window.

In addition to the ‘command’ location of your bed, you also need something taller on the left-hand side when lying in bed, and something smaller on the right. This emulates the way that energy flows around the body; as well as the movement of Sun and Moon on our planet, when standing or sleeping with our back to the magnetic fields (north pole).

Mirrors are a big problem as you should never be able to see yourself when lying in bed. Your subconscious is aware of the reflection which will only produce a fitful sleep at best. Just move or cover the mirrors at night with fabric or a curtain.

By far the best way of getting a good night’s rest is to sleep in a favourable direction and I have seen many life’s transformed from just realigning the bed.

My Feng Shui site has the formula that helps you find your best direction for either prosperity, sleep, health family harmony or long life. You can also add favourable colours and our site tells you how to do this too.’

Feng Shui Bedroom Colour & Art Tips

For your bedroom walls and art, use soothing natural colours such as ‘skin colours’ – these vary from pale white to rich chocolate brown.

Below is a helpful colour wheel that demonstrates the Feng Shui relationship between colour and mood.

In Feng Shui, when a practitioner refers to a colour chart, they generally are referring to the colours associated with each life area of the Bagua, or Pakua. In addition to the specific life areas and colours, each of the nine sections of the Pakua also has a corresponding element and direction.

Looking more specifically at art, you should aim to decorate with positive art that emphasises life and nature.

Even by changing a few things in your bedroom, you could be taking a few steps toward more positive energy within your bedroom. Give them a try!

What is the Feng Shui death position in a bedroom? And why you should avoid it

Whilst there are many Feng Shui rules to follow, avoiding the Feng Shui death position is one of the most important in order to ensure the best night’s sleep and good energy in your space. Because your bed is considered a representative of you, it is important in Feng Shui to protect it and yourself from negative energy – luckily there are a few ways to do this.

The Feng Shui death position originates from the ancient Chinese practice of lining death beds along the pathway of the door.

When it comes to perfecting a Feng Shui bedroom layout you should always start with the Feng Shui bed placement to ensure that this important piece of furniture is in its best possible position for positive energy flows. Here, experts have explained what the death position means for the energy in your home, and what you can do to correct it.

What is the death position in a bedroom for Feng Shui?

Feng Shui expert Melissa Waite Stamps explains that ‘a bed should never directly face and point toward the door with the feet pointing at the door. This is the position many Asian countries use to carry out their dead. ’ Some experts also believe that this applies to any position where your head is pointing towards the door too and makes up the Feng Shui death position.

Fellow expert Johanna Augusta explains an alternative position that could put you at a disadvantage. ‘The ‘death’ or ‘coffin’ position in Feng Shui refers to a sleeping position where your head is pointing north. It is believed that this position can energetically cut you off from life force energy, and it is therefore not recommended.’

‘It is really important to consider the layout of the room and make sure the bed is in the command position,’ Melissa recommends. ‘To get that information, look at a Bagua map. Based on where the door to the bedroom is, the best bed positions are usually Wealth, Fame, or Relationships (Love).’

Where should your bed go instead?

Whilst there are a few solutions to the feng shui death position, the commanding position is the best. ‘A bed should always be placed behind the center line of the door to the room.  It should be in the Command Position, which is the widest view from the door on a diagonal of the space.’ explains Melissa. ‘It will be the furthest back left or back right area of the room.

‘It can sometimes be in the back center of the room but you should never place a bed under a window because it makes Chi vulnerable to unlucky influences.’

The command position can also help with creating a Feng Shui bedroom for good luck and should be considered for any bedroom Feng Shui projects.

What to do if you cannot avoid the death position

(Image credit: Jon Day Photography )

Hope is not lost if you cannot avoid the Feng Shui death position as there are a few ways to use good Feng Shui furniture placement to mitigate any negative energy effects. ‘If the door to the bedroom is opening and closing across their body, it can cause physical and energy conditions on that side of the body. The same is true if the bed is placed next to a closet door,’ discloses Melissa. ‘If there is no other option, hang a windchime or round faceted crystal from the ceiling between the bed and the door.’

‘Hanging a crystal or using bedroom mirror Feng Shui in the north corner of your room will reflect back any negative energy and lead to a better sleep’ Johanna further explains.

From a design perspective, using a bed with a footboard or placing a chest or bench at the base of your bed could help provide a sense of security by creating a ‘shield’ between your bed and the door as well as adding functionality and an interesting statement in your bedroom.

‘Learn about the Bagua so you understand the importance of the Command position, and create the most fortunate position for your deepest love, dreams, and sleep,’ concludes Melissa.

Which direction should a bed face in a bedroom?

The best direction for a bed to face is towards the south. This both helps you to avoid the death position – it is also believed in Feng Shui traditions to help prevent sleep disorders such as insomnia and make you less lethargic in everyday life.

This position has been suggested as animals such as deer and cattle have been observed naturally aligning their bodies to face south when eating or resting so there appears to be a natural reason for this alignment.

Feng Shui bedroom layout: 8 ways to layout a rejuvenating space

Whilst you might know some of the basics of Feng Shui, do you know just how important the bedroom layout of a room is to achieving the ultimate Feng Shui space?

When thinking about bedroom Feng Shui, it is vital to consider the basics of a Feng Shui bedroom layout as well as what elements to introduce to the room. Whilst many bedroom layout ideas can be functional, a Feng Shui bedroom layout can help improve the flow of Chi and welcome positive energy into your space.

‘When you are in the passive Yin state you are very susceptible to the energies around you.’ says interior designer and Feng Shui consultant, Anjie Cho , ‘So it’s very important to look at the Feng Shui of your space. It is important to acknowledge that your space, your bedroom is a really important area of your home.’ Here, experts have offered their advice for laying out a bedroom for the best energy flow.

Feng Shui bedroom layout

The first step in laying out a Feng Shui bedroom layout is being clear on the room’s intention, says holistic interior designer, Anna Lippett . ‘Often with several people’s needs to consider in the design of the bedroom, it’s important to ask yourself “how would you like to feel?” in the room.

‘Would you like better sleep? Or perhaps you’d like to enjoy reading or spending more time on beauty regimes and self–care in your bedroom? Maybe it’s more romance you’re looking to attract? In Feng Shui, being clear on the intention for the bedroom is really important in order to create a scheme that supports your needs.

When creating a Feng Shui bedroom for good luck, furniture placement is everything.

1. Position your bed correctly

Good Feng Shui furniture placement is at the center of any Feng Shui bedroom layout. With the primary function of the bedroom being sleep, the bed is the most important piece of furniture in the room. It is, therefore, essential to have good Feng Shui bed placement and understand why a headboard is important for Feng Shui.

‘You want to ensure your bed is in the commanding position,’ Anjie says, ‘this means placing it diagonally from the door so that you are able to see the door without being directly in line with it.’ Having a bed that faces the door directly places you in the ‘coffin position’ and is believed to leave you vulnerable to the forces entering through the doorway. Avoiding the coffin position is advised to help you feel safe and secure at night.

Another way to create the feeling of begin secure in Feng Shui is to avoid placing a bed under a window as this is believed to lead to restless sleep and a lack of support and avoid the the Feng Shui death position.

2. Place a bedside table on either side of the bed

(Image credit: Worldwide Syndication / One Represents Ltd)

When designing a Feng Shui bedroom layout, you need to consider symmetry. Symmetry in interior design can create a sense of balance and calmness – so it is no surprise it is used in a Feng Shui space. Whilst the bedside table rule is debated by some Feng Shui practitioners, many believe that having two bedside tables can ensure the balance of energy in your romantic life. Having two identical bedside tables, preferably with rounded edges to prevent sharp, negative energy near the bed, can create a harmonized space and improve relationships.

3. Avoid mirrors in direct sight–line to the bed

There is a lot of debate around should you have a mirror in your bedroom or not when it comes to Feng Shui. However, our experts recommend it – as long as they are placed correctly.

Anna explains that ‘in Feng Shui, mirrors represent the element of water. They reflect and amplify energy so avoid positioning opposite the bed for good quality sleep.’ One way to get around this is to place the mirrors beside the bed facing outwards – allowing for functionality but not reflecting the sleep space.

Anjie, on the other hand, recommends using bedroom mirror Feng Shui to ensure the correct positioning of the bed. ‘If you can’t have your bed in the eyeline of the door, you can set up a mirror so you can see the reflection of the door. The most important thing design wise is to have your bed in the correct position rather than the mirror.’

4. Make sure your bed is accessible from each side

Having space on either side of the bed is not only functional but is believed to help balance yin and yang. Positioning your bed in this way can help qui energy flow around the room. Closing off one side can lead to unbalanced yin or yang energy when it is important to nourish both sides. Try to ensure around 18 inches on either side of the bed where possible.

It is important to note that there is an exception for children’s beds, as having their beds placed against the wall can provide them with extra support.

5. Ensure storage is sufficient – and avoid clutter beneath the bed

‘Ideally have nothing under your bed’ warns Anjie. Much like having space on either side of the bed to allow for the flow of energy, leaving space under the bed prevents clutter build up and allows energy to pass under the bed too. This is believed to help with your health and peace of mind.

From a Feng Shui perspective, having closed-off storage is ideal as it conceals clutter and emotionally charged items. If you have to have storage under your bed, however, as might be the case in small bedroom layout ideas, it is best to have sleep-related items such as linens, duvets, or pillows to maintain the restful feeling of the space.

6. Don’t place your bed under a beam or ceiling fan

For the best Feng Shui bedroom layout, you want to try and avoid placing your bed beneath any oppressive architectural features such as beams, sloped ceilings, or ceiling fans. These large features can apply unwanted pressure to you as you sleep. One way around this if you cannot move your bed is to drape fabric to conceal the ceiling feature – such as from a four-poster bed frame, or blend the architectural feature into the rest of the room by painting it the same color as the ceiling.

7. Try to keep the office out of the bedroom

When possible, the ideal Feng Shui bedroom layout will not have an office desk – although this might be difficult as many of us continue to work from home.

Good office Feng Shui prefers having a separate room for your workspace as the desk represents your work and career and can be too stimulating in the relaxing bedroom space.

If you have to have a desk in your Feng Shui bedroom layout, be mindful of its location. Try to use one of several possible room divider ideas to separate the desk slightly from the sleep space and create separate Feng Shui ‘zones’.

8. Be mindful when placing decor and personal items

When it comes to a Feng Shui bedroom layout, the positioning of personal items and art can also affect the flow of energy and the feeling of the room. Anna suggests that you should ‘display personal items and photos in the far right corner of your space or room as you enter. This is because in Feng Shui philosophy this is the area that can affect your love and relationships.’

You should avoid hanging art above the bed and headboard when possible too. ‘Position a piece of artwork or a decorative object that makes you feel uplifted, so it’s the first thing you see,’ Anna says. ‘Consider what it is you want to see when you first wake up and place art on the wall opposite your bed.’

What is the best direction for your bed to face?

The best direction for your bed to face is south – this means laying with your head pointing southwards and your feet pointing northwards. The inversion of this is considered the worst orientation.

If you are not able to position your bed in this direction, however, maintain the other Feng Shui bed layout rules.

Feng Shui for the bedroom

Literally translated “feng shui” means “wind and water”. This is a Chinese teaching that helps to direct and balance the effect of the mysterious forces of nature on human health.

The teaching of Feng Shui originated in Ancient China about 3000 years ago, it continues to develop and improve. The basis of Feng Shui is the doctrine of vital energy (qi), characteristic of all living and non-living things on earth. Feng Shui is also used to create an interior: with its help, you can determine the direction of qi flows and, as a result, correctly place objects in the living space so that a person lives easily and comfortably.

Old books, magazines, newspapers should not be stored in the bedroom, their energy does not contribute to good sleep. The bedroom is a place where a person spends almost a third of his life, so you should carefully consider the choice of the room itself and the creation of the environment. It is not very good if the room is located opposite the bathroom or the front door – the owners may experience inexplicable anxiety.

Bedroom and cardinal points

Each direction has its advantages and disadvantages, let’s dwell on them in more detail.

If your bedroom is located to the north, this is a great place for meditation, deep sleep and relaxation. But this direction does not have a very beneficial effect on lonely people: they can feel detached from the world. The northeast is not very favorable, because it worsens sleep, which means you will feel tired. Northwest is a good direction for people who prefer stability in everything.

The East is an ideal choice for a young family, the creative energy promotes development, growth and learning. Creative and business people will feel comfortable in the southeast. The western zone is recommended for romantics, for whom business and work fade into the background, the same can be said about the southern bedroom, but it will be problematic to sleep and relax in it. The southwest is considered the most unfavorable direction, here the energy is most unbalanced, therefore, a person’s subconscious mind can be haunted by a feeling of anxiety.

Bedroom color selection

Everyone who equips their own bedroom knows that the choice of color is a very important issue. The abundance of red or black shades increases the level of anxiety and clearly does not contribute to relaxation. In general, a feng shui bedroom should be done in pastel colors with bright accents. Beige, cream, light green, lavender, pale blue shades have positive energy, create a feeling of freedom and space.

It is believed that two energies should be harmoniously combined in the bedroom: yin and yang. Yin is female energy, it is characterized by calm lighting, soft colors, smooth shapes. If you feel that you are not getting enough sleep in a bedroom that is classical in all respects, then it is worth shifting the emphasis towards yang. Add shades of burgundy, dark red, dark green or blue to the interior, pick up matte shades or lampshades, bedspreads with a bright pattern.

In any bedroom there are zones: love, relaxation area, storage area. The most important is the love zone, it can be decorated with paired objects: red or orange candles, angels, figurines. Dreamcatchers are also often used – they should be hung at the head of the bed. Areas should not be cluttered, so all things should be securely hidden in a closet, and not lie in a messy pile in plain sight.

Feng Shui bedroom furniture

The heart of the bedroom is, of course, the bed, the perfect Feng Shui bed with a double mattress and a wide headboard. Each shape of the headboard has its own meaning: a triangular back accompanies love life, an oval or round one will bring prosperity to the family, a rectangular one guarantees marital fidelity. A wave-shaped headboard is suitable for experienced couples, it gives peace and tranquility, but an arched arch is not the best choice for a bed, it is a symbol of the “dead dream”. There must be one mattress on the bed, since the symbolic separation of spouses into 2 mattresses may eventually become real. It is also not recommended to sleep on two beds pushed together.

The bed should not be round, and you should not give preference to synthetic water mattresses – an unstable bed does not accompany a good rest. The bed should not have its feet facing the doorway, but it can be positioned so that when you lie on it, you can see the bedroom door. You should not place a bed under the ceiling beams, which are not decorated with anything – the spouses may have health problems and troubles in their personal lives.

Large windows are welcome in the bedroom, but direct sunlight should not fall on the bed, so take care of thick fabric curtains. Near the beds, you can place small bedside tables or tables, but in storage boxes it is better to keep only bed linen. You should not put a bed in the middle of the room, this is a sign of instability and promises trouble. Do not sleep under a large lamp that “cuts” the bed in two, negative energy can also affect a sleeping couple.

Separate conversation – bed linen. It should not be blue or black, red – only for exceptional cases. Cars, predatory animals, bright acid paintings are also not the best choice, as they provoke hidden anxiety.

Feng Shui bedroom mirrors

Since ancient times, the mirror has been considered a powerful energy storage, so when considering the design of the bedroom, place this piece of furniture with care. You should not hang a mirror at the foot of the bed, otherwise a person may wake up to see his own reflection and mistake it for a ghost. It is also believed that a mirror located at the feet of a couple can lead to a deterioration in relationships.

You should not hang a mirror in front of the door to the room, as it will reflect all the energy, which means that favorable qi will not linger in your bedroom. A mirror can be helpful if your bed is positioned so that you can’t see the front door. Then you can just look at the wall and see the incoming person without turning your head.

General Feng Shui Guidelines

  • Before embarking on a new bedroom design, do a quality renovation or cleaning. There should be no stains on the ceiling, scuffs on the wallpaper, and so on.
  • The bedroom should always have working chandeliers, lamps and nightlights, they need to be regularly cleaned of dust, so you should not choose overly complex designs – taking care of them takes a lot of effort.
  • Regularly sort out things in the closet, put things in order, get rid of excesses. Order in the closet – order in personal life.
  • If your bedroom has a nightstand or dressing table, don’t clutter it up. Put cosmetics, magazines, sets, etc. inside, and put a beautiful talisman or figurine on the nightstand.
  • Repair furniture in time, it should always be clean and stable.
  • Try to clean your bedroom yourself, a housekeeper or a stranger will not be able to fill this room with favorable energy.

Do’s and don’ts?

  • Old books, magazines, newspapers should not be kept in the bedroom, their energy does not contribute to good sleep.
  • Try to carefully choose indoor plants for the bedroom: for example, climbing flowers can draw energy from a sleeping person, so it is better to rearrange the pot with them somewhere in the kitchen or living room.
  • The bedroom is a place of rest, so it is better to keep the safe, documents and other things related to work in the office.
  • Do not fill this room with bright light, halogen lamps are also not the best choice, they break the intimate atmosphere and harmony.
  • Cages with parrots, chinchillas and other small animals should not be in the bedroom. This is not the place for an aquarium, because water creates anxiety and anxiety.
  • When choosing paintings for the bedroom, give preference to beautiful landscapes, still lifes, family miniatures, but it is better to refuse water landscapes or pictures of flowers.
  • Clocks are not desirable in the bedroom: firstly, their ticking can interfere, and secondly, they should not be bulky, because they accumulate bad energy. If you can’t do without a clock, let it be a small alarm clock.
  • Modern technology is absolutely not conducive to romance and relaxation, so it is better to place a computer or music center in a living room or office. The TV is also a separate topic of conversation: if you can’t fall asleep without it, then always unplug it from the outlet at night.

The bedroom is a very personal and intimate room, where a person should feel cozy and comfortable. In the HomeMe.ru catalog you can choose high-quality furniture for your bedroom. In a dream, we are vulnerable, so this Feng Shui room should protect us, give strength and positive energy, so choose the right bedroom design!

Feng Shui Bedroom: 12 Expert Tips

LifestyleRooms

Designer, feng shui specialist and author of Hostilis Spaces, Angie Cho.

The bedroom is the main place in the house. Here we have a rest from a busy day, enjoy sleep, recharge our “vital batteries”, fill up with energy for new beginnings and achievements. Feng Shui practices from American interior designer, feng shui specialist and author of the popular book Hostilis Spaces, Anjie Cho, can help you create a harmonious space in which the senses are in peace and balance.

Peace, only peace!

Whatever style you like, your goal is to create the most peaceful atmosphere in the bedroom. “The most important thing in feng shui is how you feel in a certain space. In the bedroom, which has positive energy, you will feel care, support, feel comfortable, like at home. Your environment has a huge impact on your state of mind, well-being and even health.

Do not place the bed in line with the door

The main principle of Feng Shui requires that the bed be placed diagonally to the door. When you lie in bed, you should be able to see the door, but it should not be in line with the bed. You should not sleep with your feet to the door and your head to the door.

Project by Ekaterina Gafina and Yulia Nikulina.

The headboard should be one piece

The headboard connects you to your partner and provides stability and harmony between the masculine and feminine. Therefore, it must be homogeneous, without holes and holes. It is best to use wooden or soft textile headboards. But avoid metal, because metal headboards are often made in a lattice pattern and create a caged feel.

Designed by Katerina Lashmanova.

Hide the TV away from your eyes

Whether or not to put the TV in the bedroom is up to you and your habits. But if you have trouble sleeping, it’s best not to use it where you sleep, or at least hide it from view behind a wooden screen or curtain. Nowadays, there are many different elegant ways to hide equipment so that it does not interfere with sleep.

Choose plants carefully

Living greenery in the interior has a good effect on our state of mind, nature pacifies and harmonizes our feelings. However, not all plants meet the principles of Feng Shui. According to Angie Cho, it is best to use plants with soft, rounded leaves. For example, succulents with heart-shaped leaves or mother-in-law’s tongue that releases oxygen at night – they not only heal the room, but also create a calm, peaceful atmosphere in it.

Organic bedding

Bedding made from natural organic materials (such as cotton or bamboo fibers) is the best option for a feng shui bedroom. There are many ethical questions about how, what, and under what conditions bedding is made, because all the negative (or positive) energy is woven into the materials. Try to buy products from “ethical”, non-toxic, environmentally friendly materials, because this will directly affect your well-being and life.

When it comes to color choice, white is too boring for a bedroom. It is like a blank canvas on which you apply different accents, such as colorful pillows. If you want to attract a partner to yourself, use pink bedding, if you want to add passion and fire to your personal life, use red.

Strive for balance

If you want to attract a partner or are already with someone in a relationship, the principle of balance and balance plays an extremely important role in the bedroom. Free space on both sides of the bed or bedside tables on both sides are just some examples. By the way, bedside tables do not have to be the same. They can even stand asymmetrically – there are no strict rules, the principle of balance leaves you freedom of action.

Incorporate Your Favorite Colors

Most people think that a completely neutral palette is the key to a perfect feng shui bedroom interior. However, this is not quite true. You can use here any shades that are close to you and resonate with your feelings. The neutral gamma is now tending towards more earthy shades: “earth” gives the foundation, support, stability, and energizes. If it suits you, feel free to choose such a palette. But in the end it all depends on your personal tastes and preferences.

More light in the house is one of the key principles of Feng Shui. It brings brilliance, clarity, activity to all areas of your life. Feng Shui recommends paying special attention to lighting – it is indispensable when someone in the house is depressed, upset or depressed. Use lighting with a color temperature of 2700 K, not 3000 K: it adds more warmth, comfort and soulfulness to the interior. And don’t forget about candles – another undisputed favorite in the interior of the bedroom, creating the most intimate atmosphere that it would be difficult to achieve with the help of lighting fixtures.

Avoid family photos

Strange as it may sound, feng shui believes that there is no room for family photos in the bedroom. This is an empire for two: you and your partner, and photos of family members do not contribute to creating a sexy interior.

Don’t hang pictures too low

The picture above the bed is a traditional element of bedroom decor. However, you can not hang them too low above the bed – in this case, they will emotionally overwhelm you. The same rule applies to the choice of bed: the model should not be too low. (Note to those who like to sleep on mattresses on the floor!)

Bedroom in the Moscow project of the architect Lazzaro Raboni.

Reduce clutter

Chaos and clutter in the home are stressful and Feng Shui requires avoiding them. It is good to have a lot of free space in the bedroom, especially under the bed – this creates a healthy atmosphere and healthy Chi energy in the room. But if you live in a small apartment and you need a place under the bed for storage, use it exclusively for things related to sleep (bedding, blankets, pillows). This is not a place to store emotionally charged items, such as shoes, clothes, old letters, postcard boxes, photographs, or documents.

It is also better not to keep books in the bedroom, they are too active. The maximum that is allowed is a novel that you read before going to bed. But a full-fledged library will distract from sleep. “We live too hectic, stressful lives, so sleep must be protected and made as calm as possible,” Cho says.

feng shui rules

From the point of view of ancient science, Shen Qi energy flows constantly circulate in space. Nothing should interfere with these currents, since negative Sha energy accumulates in places of stagnation, affecting well-being, family relationships and financial well-being. The task of feng shui is to direct positive energy in the right direction with the help of competent organization of the surrounding space

Let’s look at a few basic points that will help you better understand the ancient Chinese philosophy:

  • Feng Shui is not a set of recommendations on how to properly place furniture in the “wealth”, “love” and “health” zone. At the heart of science lies the search for beauty and harmony.
  • First of all, the Feng Shui bedroom must be clean. Dust-free lamps and shelves, streak-free windows and mirrors, washed floors are the key to peace and harmony.
  • Amulets and talismans have nothing to do with the classical teachings of Feng Shui, so it is not recommended to litter the living space with crystals, coins and figurines.
  • Ready-made Feng Shui schemes may not be suitable if applied without taking into account the characteristics of the house and the nature of its inhabitants. Qi energy has a positive effect on a person if he himself is set to change for the better.

Choice of color

The color scheme in the bedroom according to Feng Shui is chosen taking into account the taste and well-being of its owner. A person who does not have problems with sleep is better to give preference to warm light colors: beige, creamy, pink. The main design of the bedroom – the color of the wallpaper or paint – should remain neutral. In minimal quantities, bright accents of Yang energy are also acceptable: yellow, orange and saturated green. It can be pillows, carpet and bedding.

If a couple needs to bring back romance and passion, Feng Shui experts recommend using red or burgundy bedspreads and curtains.

The photo shows a bedroom in pastel colors for a person who is not prone to insomnia and wakes up fresh and rested.

The color of a Feng Shui bedroom affects people in different ways. Those who sleep restlessly, often wake up and see emotional dreams, are advised to keep the interior in cold tones of Yin energy: gray-violet, lilac, dark green. We also allow blue and even black – it is believed that it absorbs bad luck and protects the house, but a dark interior is not suitable for anxious and melancholy people.

For those who wish to improve their health, Feng Shui masters advise decorating the bedroom in shades of metal – white, gray, golden.

Furniture Arrangement

The bed takes center stage in any bedroom:

  • Best of all, if it is made of natural materials.
  • According to Feng Shui, the space under it should be left open so that positive energy circulates freely.
  • If two people share a room, the passage to the bed should be easy for both.
  • To feel safe, it is recommended to place the head of the bed close to the wall. Massive chandeliers, cabinets and shelves should not be placed above it.
  • If the sleeper is facing the window, reduce the negative impact of open space and hang blackout curtains.

Furniture (bed, chest of drawers, dressing table) should preferably have as few sharp corners as possible. Adherents of Feng Shui place bedside tables on both sides of the bed, because according to the tradition of the ancient teachings, twins attract good luck. In modern interiors, there are many bedrooms decorated according to the principle of symmetry.

The photo shows a bedroom decorated according to the rules of Feng Shui: a flat ceiling, rounded corners, neutral colors.

Large cabinets and shelving are not recommended in small rooms. It is not necessary to have a spacious room to equip the bedroom according to Feng Shui: it is enough to reduce the number of items and furniture. Thus, more space will appear in the room, which means its energy will improve.

According to Feng Shui, you should not put a large aquarium in the bedroom – the activation of the Water element can manifest itself too strongly. The proximity to the aquarium has a negative effect on sleep and well-being: filter noise, the constant movement of fish and bubbles do not contribute to relaxation and sound sleep. But in the end, the owner of the bedroom decides everything – for some people, a compact indoor aquarium has a calming effect.

Also, Feng Shui does not recommend installing a fireplace in the bedroom. The symbol of Fire is well manifested in the living room, but is not always appropriate in a quiet rest area.

The photo shows a room in warm colors. Despite the presence of a workplace, the interior looks airy and light: natural shades, unobtrusive forms and a minimum of furniture make the bedroom cozy and calm.

Location of the bedroom on the cardinal points

When building a house or choosing an apartment, Feng Shui experts advise paying attention to the cardinal points, but the bedroom energy should be calculated individually for each individual.

It is believed that the location of the bedroom in the north adjusts to deep reflection and sound sleep, but if the owner of the room lives alone, the feeling of loneliness in the northern room can become aggravated. If the bedroom is located in the northeast, active Qi energy can lead to sleep disturbance or insomnia. The Northwest is suitable for stable and self-confident people, as well as spouses who have been married for many years. The East promotes entrepreneurship, creativity and helps build a career.

The southeast bedroom gives energy to creative people who want to increase their knowledge. The south is suitable for passionate natures, as well as young lovers who want to strengthen their relationship. The energy on the west side is good for those who are looking for pleasure in life, so it is better not to choose this sector for climbing the career ladder. A room located in the southwest is unfavorable for many people: it deprives of health and contributes to anxiety.

The photo shows a Feng Shui bedroom in the northwestern sector for a respectable couple.

Planning features

It is best to place the bedroom at the far end of the apartment – the room adjacent to the front door is affected by negative energy. If possible, it is worth arranging a place to relax away from the bathroom and kitchen – then extraneous sounds will not disturb you during sleep.

Ideally, if the shape of the room is square or rectangular. If the room has an irregular shape, it is worth smoothing the corners with furniture or curtains.

Unused space (alcoves, long narrow passages) do not create positive energy. In addition, a walk-through room with two doors is not suitable for a Feng Shui bedroom – this arrangement contributes to frequent conflicts. But when the apartment owners do not have the opportunity to freely choose a place to sleep, this issue is easily resolved without redevelopment: you just need to drape the passage with a cloth.

The photo shows a spacious bedroom in a country house, located on the second floor and decorated according to Feng Shui. Panoramic windows are decorated with blackout curtains, which smooth out the influence of negative energy at night.

In one-room apartments, it is desirable to separate the living area from the sleeping area using a screen or light partitions, but Feng Shui does not welcome massive closets in the middle of the room.

Ideally, if the ceiling is even and does not have bulky structures – according to feng shui experts, beams in the attic and multi-level structures prevent energy from circulating freely, which leads to financial problems. If there is no way to solve this problem radically, you can protect the bed with a canopy. Soft matter will smooth out the negative impact of sharp corners.

How to decorate a bedroom: decor and lighting?

Feng Shui affects not only the layout and color scheme of the bedroom: it is believed that various accessories also affect the energy of the room.

One of the main decorative elements around which there is a lot of controversy is the mirror. Many feng shui experts believe that this item is inappropriate in a relaxation room, as it increases the amount of light, which means it reflects and activates energy. But for most people, a full-length mirror in the bedroom is a necessary element. If you can’t refuse it, you should choose a round-shaped product without corners. It is believed that it is unacceptable to place a mirror opposite the bed or on the ceiling: sleeping people should not be reflected in it, so as not to lose their vitality at night.

There is no place in the bedroom for a TV or a computer. It is best if, upon awakening, a person sees a beautiful picture hanging on the wall: flowers, landscapes without rivers and lakes (as we have already mentioned, the proximity to the water element in the bedroom can be dangerous). Images should carry only positive emotions, so it is better to refuse pictures with natural disasters, an erupting volcano or lightning. Also, Feng Shui does not recommend using photographs of deceased relatives as decoration.

The photo shows a bedroom with a large mirror that does not reflect the sleepers. Its frame is decorated with rounded elements that soften the shape of the product. The bed is close to the window, but has a high headboard to make the person feel safe.

The feng shui bedroom is a place where it is forbidden to use decor related to the animal world: deer antlers, feathers and skins will look better in the living room. Clocks are also not welcome in the bedroom: despite the fact that this item is highly respected by Feng Shui masters, they do not recommend placing a voluminous mechanical clock in the sleeping room. The maximum is a compact alarm clock that can be hidden. But in the children’s bedroom, a watch with a large dial is quite appropriate – with their help, children learn to carefully manage time.

House plants also influence the interior according to Feng Shui. It is believed that the rest room should not be overloaded with flowers: two or three flowerpots or planters are enough. Experts believe that each plant carries its own energy. For example, dracaena and ficus symbolize prosperity, which means they bring a stable cash flow. Violet is responsible for love, so they put it in the bedroom to strengthen the romantic relationship between the spouses, as well as to improve their personal lives. Feng Shui does not favor artificial flowers, herbarium and flower arrangements, as “dead” plants bring negativity into the house.

We should also talk about lighting. Natural light is considered the best option, but if there is little sun in the room, you can use lamps. It is worth buying simple chandeliers and sconces with rounded shades. It is also necessary to take into account the color temperature: lamps with a value of up to 3500 Kelvin give a warm, cozy light, but feng shui does not welcome bright LEDs in the house. In addition, dust and insects should not be allowed inside the lamps: they carry bad energy.

The photo shows a bedroom for a young woman. Two twin lamps with warm light stand on both sides of the bed. The upholstered headboard is located close to the wall and gives a sense of security.

Arrangement of the bedroom according to the precepts of ancient Chinese teachings is in many ways similar to the principles of ergonomics and safety. Many recommendations take into account human psychology, which means they are not devoid of common sense. In addition, rearranging and updating the interior, as well as keeping the house clean has a beneficial effect on a person, and whether to follow the rules of Feng Shui or not is a purely individual choice.

Feng Shui Bedroom – Rules

The popular Feng Shui doctrine has not bypassed its attention in the design of the bedroom – this center of recuperation and close relationships. Bedroom feng shui takes into account many subtleties of designing a place to relax: from choosing a room to arranging furniture and decorating with decor items.

The main thing is that the beneficial energy of Qi can freely circulate in it, endowing the inhabitants of this house with health and prosperity.

Where the bedroom should be located

Let’s check if the place for the bedroom is right. Of course, the possibility of choice can only be exercised in a spacious dwelling. In small apartments, there is nothing to choose from, although even there it is important to correctly determine the location of the bed.

So, the feng shui of the bedroom determines that it should be in the back of the house or apartment, away from the front door. If the bedroom door is located opposite the entrance, then the Qi energy will fly into it without even stopping in this house.

The location of the bedroom in front of the bathroom or toilet gives the same negative influence of Feng Shui. Running water will completely wash away the opportunity to fully relax. The location of the bedroom relative to parts of the world is not indifferent:

    • Location in the northwest is the best option for spouses, such a bedroom will definitely become an island of comfort and tranquility;
    • Location in the south-east or in the south – the bedroom is designed for young people and creative people;
    • Location in the west – in such a bedroom it will be good for careerists, but they will not have enough romance in the right place, although the promotion will be significant.

The same rules apply if there is no bedroom as such, but only a place to relax in a small apartment or studio. In this case, you need to somehow limit the location of the resting place, separate it with a screen, a curtain.

    Color matters

Peace of mind is the main feeling that the inhabitants of this room should experience. In order for the color of the bedroom according to Feng Shui not to irritate, but to help you find peace, you need to choose the right wallpaper or wall colors.

The apologists of this doctrine believe that pastel colors, natural soft shades, will be appropriate here. The cardinal points here also affect the color of the walls. Color matching rules:

    • Orientation southwest, northeast personify the elements of the Earth. Wallpaper or wall color is better to choose a shade of terracotta, ocher, cinnamon.
    • Orientation to the south is subject to the elements of Fire. For such a bedroom, the shade of the walls and the wallpaper of warm red and orange colors are selected. Having decorated the interior in a similar range, you can expect the height of passions and the strengthening of marriage.
    • Orientation to the north – the patrimony of the element of Water. This is not the best option for choosing the location of the bedroom, because in the Feng Shui room, blue and reminders of water should be avoided. However, if there is no other way out, it is better to use the power of the water element by choosing wallpaper and wall colors in cold blue-bluish tones.
    • Orientation to the west or northwest is subject to the elements of Metal. If the shade of the walls and wallpaper are metallic colors (golden, silver, white and gray), the Qi energy in such a bedroom will multiply several times.

It is desirable to choose wallpapers without bright color spots, with even small patterns. Choosing the color of the bedroom according to Feng Shui, you need to pay attention to the ceiling. It should be only white, without protruding beams or other elements.

The main element in the spotlight

Nothing gets as much attention when arranging furniture in the bedroom as its main element – the bed. It should not be replaced by a sofa, sofa, reclining chair or other alternative to this essential piece of furniture. Bed selection rules:

    • Even if only one person lives in the bedroom, the bed must be double.
    • On this piece of furniture, the mattress should only be one-piece, not two-piece, otherwise discord between spouses is inevitable.
    • The best position for a bed is against the walls near the door, but not opposite the exit. However, the person lying on the bed should be able to see the door, but not lie feet first in relation to it (in the “dead man” position). This position is very important, as the right direction attracts health and protects against diseases.
    • The bed should always be neatly made, have fresh linens, good pillows, mattress and blanket, be stable and durable.
    • A double bed placed by a bachelor or a single woman on one side close to the walls of the bedroom will cause the person sleeping on it to choose a life of loneliness.
    • It is very bad if a shelf hangs over the bed, bulky paintings, or other interior items.

In order for the sleep on this bed to be strong and full, it is necessary that there are absolutely no things under it, drawers, boxes or just rubbish. Cleanliness and order in the bedroom is an indispensable condition for quality rest.

The object that absorbs all diseases and takes all the blow is “calabash” — a specially prepared dry or copper gourd. If this talisman stands to the left of the bed during sleep, it prolongs the life of its owner.

    Reflection of negativity during sleep

A mirror is an object that, according to Feng Shui, should not be in the bedroom. It is given special importance according to the rules of this landscaping technique. Whatever the mirror “sees”, it reflects. In the kitchen, the mirror reflects wealth and multiplies it; in the bathroom, it reflects spiritual or physical energy. In the bedroom, the mirror cannot reflect anything other than negative energy, which the sleeper gets rid of during rest.

This energy is reflected from the walls and pieces of furniture, it is not absorbed by wallpaper and interior items, but it perfectly lets in a mirror. If the mirror cannot be removed from the bedroom, then it must be positioned so that it does not reflect the person during sleep. A mirror located at the foot of the bed can jeopardize even the intimate relationships of those who are reflected in it. And in no case should you place a mirror or any reflective elements on the ceiling.

    Chandelier and other interior items

As for lighting, according to Feng Shui, the sun should not fall on the bed, because the active sun charges it with its energy. On such an activated place to sleep, it will be very difficult to fall asleep afterwards. This is good only when new relationships are on the horizon, then activity is only welcome.

A chandelier in the bedroom is not a mandatory item, it is better to get by with lamps with soft light, in addition to them you can add a place to relax with nightlights. Although, according to Feng Shui, a lamp is the personification of income, and the brighter it is, the more finances the flow of beneficial Qi energy will attract to the house.
Pictures, posters placed in the bedroom should not depict plots that breathe energy: raging sea, cars, wind, running people, animals, sports competitions.

    Not recommended for bedrooms:

    • Houseplants, especially thorny or large-leaved plants with fragrant smells;
    • TV, computer, telephone;
    • Watches, especially bulky ones, are also not welcome in the bedroom. An exception is made only for the alarm clock.
    • Aquariums, fountains, depictions of water in all its forms will make good luck run out with the water.

    Arrows, angles or curves

It is desirable that interior items, furniture in the bedroom have soft lines and outlines not rectangular, but curvilinear. One of the postulates of the Feng Shui teaching says that if objects are located in relation to each other so that their constructive lines form a kind of poisonous arrows (straight and sharp corners), then they direct a lot of negative energy at a person.

Right angles “sharpen” the atmosphere of the room, have a negative effect on the sleeping inhabitants of the rest room. They feel subconscious anxiety, worry for no reason. This effect is softened by furniture with rounded lines, all kinds of draperies made of soft fabrics.

Those who want to change their personal life without a partner need to provide more paired interior items in the bedroom decoration, for example, two bedside tables, two pillows, two beds. If you choose the right place for the bedroom, choose the right color for the walls or wallpaper, remove indoor flowers and household appliances from it, you can count on the fact that this approach will harmonize the life of the owners of this home.

    Feng Shui in the bedroom?

Following the science of feng shui, home plays an important role in everyone’s life.

The most enjoyable and, of course, creative activity according to ancient Chinese teachings is the design of your own bedroom Feng Shui.

After all, it is in it that a person spends a third of his life. And every time you come here you plunge into relaxing relaxation, in the bedroom you hide from problems and feel protected.

Let’s plunge into the ancient Chinese world and figure out what a bedroom should be like according to Feng Shui:

First of all, before proceeding with the design of the bedroom, it is necessary to carry out a general cleaning, or rather cosmetic repairs.

Make sure that there are no peeling wallpapers, stains on the walls and ceiling, that the windows are intact and clean, that all the bulbs in the chandelier are lit and the chandelier itself is intact (if it is broken, it is better to throw it away without sparing, because why you have a broken light in your life..?) otherwise all this will create a negative impact on your life of Sha energy.

The size of your bedroom also plays an important role, but you don’t have to start demolishing or building walls.

An easier way to achieve harmony and comfort in your room.

If you have a small bedroom, then all its furnishings should be in bed, airy tones, so that you have a feeling of freedom and lightness.

In a wide room, saturated colors are more suitable. Bright colors will add coziness and warmth to the room. But the most important thing is to find a middle ground that would combine your tastes and recommendations of Feng Shui masters.

If you have recently moved into an apartment (house) or you have the opportunity to choose a room for your bedroom, then you can orient the direction of the bedroom to the cardinal points, guided by the following considerations:

    – if you want to establish sexual relations with your partner or breathe new energy into them – choose the northern direction;

    -North-western direction should be chosen by those who seek to maintain stability in relations and bring them to a higher level;

    – for those who lack romance in life, choose the western direction; – do you lack passion in relationships? Set up your bedroom in the South.

This sector has the strongest energy that promotes passion and love.

    But remember, a bedroom in the South will not let you rest and sleep well;

    – in the south – east, the bedroom is perfect for those who are engaged in business.

The energy in this sector is more calm and creative, it will help you find any approach to business partners and calm communication with work colleagues.

It should only be remembered that other directions also have a place to be, they will simply contribute to a lesser extent to a peaceful rest and a successful sexual life.

Now let’s talk about decorating your bedroom:

For those who sleep well, get up easily in the morning without feeling tired, but feel well-rested and well-rested, a Yin-style bedroom will do.

The color scheme of such a bedroom should be in peach, beige, pink, golden tones.

Furniture in the bedroom should be due to rounded corners.

    Subdued and soft light.

Luminaires with soft blue or pale pink colors are ideal.

    Basically, this is a classic bedroom;

But for those who do not sleep well, toss and turn at night, it is difficult to get up in the morning, feel tired, overwhelmed and dream about sleep during the day at work – a Yang-style bedroom is suitable.

The color scheme of such a bedroom should be framed in dark red, deep green or blue tones.

The ceiling can be painted the same color as the walls, only in lighter shades.

Luminaires available in black and white.

And bed linen should be chosen in brighter colors.

The main thing to remember is that you need to create a bedroom for yourself and for yourself, guided by your interests, your tastes and lifestyle.

However, this does not mean that the bedroom should be arranged in the style of a bungalow or an ancient cave.

The bed is perhaps the most important attribute of your bedroom – after all, we sleep on it. The bed should be as comfortable as possible and not too big.

A wooden bed with flat or rounded backs is ideal.

The bed should be without built-in drawers. If they are, then only bed linen can be stored in them. The bed should be yours, and not inherited from mom, grandmother, etc., because things tend to store the energy of the previous owners and you simply run the risk of starting to repeat their fate.

If you sleep on a sofa, then it should always be in the unfolded state and it should also have a mattress or not thin on the mattress pad to combine the parts of the sofa into one whole, which will promote love and harmony in your relationship.

The bed must stand so that the door is visible, but in no case should the legs be towards the door.

In this case, you will not sleep well, you will have problems with your health and with the conception of a child.

If it is impossible to rearrange the bed, make at least a visual barrier between the door and the bed, for example, put up a screen.

Do not sleep with your head or feet towards the toilet.

In this case, negative Sha energy flows will be transmitted to you, which will have a bad effect on sleep and mood during the day.

If it is not possible to rearrange the bed, place a crystal (amethyst, turquoise, agate, etc.) between the wall and the beds

When the bed is reflected in the mirror, you kind of duplicate yourself, which leads to the appearance of lovers and mistresses.

If the bed cannot be removed, remove the mirrors or shield the bed from them.

It is not recommended to sleep between doors or a window and a door.

Otherwise, it turns out that you are sleeping on the “high road”, where different energy flows constantly circulate and intersect.

If it is impossible to remove the bed, then it is worth blocking the way for energy flows by placing a screen or large objects (flowers, lamps, large flowerpots or decor items).

Sleep the head of the bed to the window – place a crystal between them to neutralize the negative impact of Sha energy on you, which passes through the window into the room.

If you sleep on different beds, even if they are pushed together or on the same bed with two single mattresses.

You will not have a long and happy family life, and intimate relationships will simply die. And there is only one way out – to sleep on the same bed with one mattress and under one blanket.

    What should not be in the bedroom of Feng Shui-Safes and everything related to money, this is not the place to solve financial issues;

    – Extra things and rubbish. The bedroom should have minimal furnishings;

    – TVs, computers, telephones, etc. are best placed in other rooms.

    Only a small boombox for relaxing music is allowed in the bedroom;

    – Bird cages and fish tanks;

    – Old newspapers and family archives are a source of extraneous energy for your aura;

    – Plants – loaches that suck and take away energy from a sleeping person;

    – Mirrors reflecting the bed and people sleeping on it;

    – Ceiling beams overhanging the bed, especially at the head of the bed;

    – Sharp objects, both in corners in furniture and in its decor;

    – Many plants in the bedroom – they take energy, absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide.

    However, a pair of flowerpots with flowers will not harm, but rather decorate your life;

    – Your bed and bedroom furniture must be in good condition;

    – Remove single items from the bedroom or add them in pairs.

Because single objects tend to bring loneliness into your life.

Use double candlesticks, paired figurines and portraits, romantic landscapes in paintings.

Of course, this is not all in the science of Feng Shui, what can be said about the bedroom.

But even using these not cunning and simple recommendations, you can significantly change your life, establish more harmonious relationships in the family, improve intimate relationships with a partner – which will naturally always accompany a good mood and quality of your life, and what could be better?

So change your life, do not forget to listen to your intuition, and everything will change for the better.

The main thing is to start..!

Feng Shui bedroom – 100 photos of the correct design

We have known this direction for a long time, it is believed that the placement of Feng Shui objects brings the forces of water and wind into the house.

The first place where Feng Shui was used was ancient China. For more than 3000 years, the history of the development of Feng Shui has been studied.

Today this technique can be learned in special schools. This direction has long become an icon of fashion, it is truly interesting to know it.

Furnishing the bedroom with Feng Shui technology

The bedroom is the place where we come to rest from the external fuss. Our little refuge, where every little thing should calm us down and benefit us. Not any extra clutter.

This is the feng shui rule. It should also be noted that the location of the bedroom also affects the positive flow of energy.

Having a bedroom on the north side of the apartment, a person gets a deep restful sleep, rests not only with his body, but also with his soul in full size.

But this location is not for everyone. For example, a young couple, their energy flow will be frozen, from constant relaxation and the absence of the Sun.

The Feng Shui location of the bedroom on the northeast side is not the best option. Human sleep will be disturbed due to the excessive activity of nature, which will lead to health problems.

Let’s see what we have on the northwest side. To have a bedroom on this side can people who have gained stability and tranquility in this world.

For the younger generation, it is better to place a bedroom in an apartment in the eastern part of the apartment or house. According to feng shui, it is believed that the east gives us the energy that helps us improve.

Novice businessmen should locate a recreation area in the southeast side. The energy that prevails there will help you develop in business and grow to the top.

For people full of energy and passion, the South will be a wonderful place. It has a positive effect on your sex life.

Lovers of romance west side. There you will not be able to develop in a career, but your personal life will be on top.

And finally, the south-west side. By placing a bedroom there, you run the risk of launching negative energy into your shelter, such as: anxiety, self-doubt.

Here are the first basics in the direction of Feng Shui.

It is equally important to have the right shape of the room, no need for an overly square shape will bring you more benefit than another. Your bedroom will find complete peace and immerse you in it.

Pay attention to the location of the interior door! Make sure that it is not opposite any other door in order to avoid quarrels in the family.

How to correctly distribute items according to Feng Shui in the bedroom?

Of course, the main thing in the bedroom is the bed, it occupies most of the room and its location is very important in Feng Shui technique.

First, make sure the bed is strong and secure, this is directly related to the stability of the family.

The second position of the bed depends on who sleeps on it. For example, if there are two of you, then there should be free space on three sides.

Do not put the third one in front of the door, in feng shui it is associated with death.

In addition to the bed, there are other pieces of furniture. Such as nightstands. You can always see a bedside table near the bed; according to Feng Shui, it should not be higher than the bed. The mirror in the bedroom according to Feng Shui should be located so that sleeping people are not reflected in it.

Summarizing, we can say that according to Feng Shui all furniture in the bedroom should be in minimal quantities and should not block the flow of energy.
