Whether it’s in your bathroom or basement, you’ve probably had a run-in with mold. Not only is it unsightly (and sometimes stinky), mold can cause serious health problems if it’s not dealt with properly. You also run the risk of letting it grow out of control, causing damage to your home that gets costly pretty quickly. There are many ways to be proactive about mold, and cleaning regularly is one of them. Sunlight is your first defense against its growth, and in humid climates, running a dehumidifier to help control moisture will help. But once you’ve spotted mold, good old elbow grease is your best bet at fighting it.

Avoid tackling dangerous molds — Modernistic recommends calling in a pro if it looks slimy and greenish-black. You might also want to enlist some extra help if the affected area is over 10 square feet, if you can smell it but cannot see the source, and if anyone in your home’s health would be compromised by it. When it’s a task you can handle on your own, it’s best to err on the side of caution and wear a protective mask and gloves. These easy mold cleaners will help you get the job done.

1. Vinegar

focal point/Shutterstock

Using vinegar to clean mold is eco-friendly, cost-efficient, and effective. According to Mold Help For You, its mildly acidic properties can eradicate mold on both porous and non-porous surfaces because it removes both the mold’s top layer as well as its underlying membrane. But stick to white vinegar, since other choices like apple cider vinegar have sugar components that could promote mold growth.

To get started, fill a spray bottle with distilled white vinegar (and don’t dilute with water). Spray the affected area until its very wet and let the vinegar sit for at least an hour. Next, use a scrub brush, sponge, or toothbrush to wipe away all traces of the mold. When you’re finished, wipe the area down with warm water and let it dry completely. While its strong odor might offend your nose for a bit, it should disappear shortly. And if you can’t stand the scent of vinegar, you can always mix in an essential oil to tone it down. The Spruce recommends using vinegar to clean mold off of leather and household appliances, like fridges, coffee makers, and washing machines.

2. Tea tree oil

New Africa/Shutterstock

Tea tree oil is another natural way to clean mold due to its antifungal properties, though it’s a little more expensive. You’ll also need to get the right kind. Damp Solving advises that its chemical makeup will need high terpinen-4-ol concentration (minimum 35%) to be effective against molds.

Make a cleaning solution by mixing 1 teaspoon of tea tree oil per every cup of water you need, then add it to a spray bottle. Spray on the impacted area and let it sit overnight. The next day, wipe with a clean cloth or towel — you can dunk it in vinegar for an extra boost against mold. Note that it might take a few applications to work. Treehugger also recommends spraying it on areas that get moldy, like shower tiles, without rinsing it off for a boost in mold protection. Tea tree oil can irritate skin, so be sure it handle carefully.

3. Lemon

Leka Sergeeva/Shutterstock

Another inexpensive mold cleaner that comes right from your kitchen is lemon juice. Along with being environmentally friendly, it has a lighter, more agreeable odor than vinegar and tea tree oil. HomeSteady writes that lemon’s mild acidity (made up with about 5% acid) makes it gentle on most surfaces.

Use undiluted lemon juice on harsher mold problems, or make a 50-50 diluted water-lemon juice spray to clean up mildew or light mold issues. Squirt onto the affected surface and let it sit for 10 minutes before washing it up with warm, soapy water. Let it dry completely. Lemon juice kills mold on shower curtains, garbage disposals, bathroom tiles, and some fabrics. To boost your lemon juice mold treatment, Eco Flood & Mold Remediation recommends mixing equal parts lemon juice and vinegar and adding in some baking soda to make a cleaning paste. You can also heat your lemon-water spray to increase its effectiveness.

4. Baking soda

Sendo Serra/Shutterstock

Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, has many uses around the house, and now you can add mold-killer to the list due to its high pH. As an added bonus, baking soda is inexpensive, odorless, and non-toxic, making it safe for people and pets. Zumper writes that along with destroying mold, its drying properties suck up moisture, which inhibits future mold growth.

To make a baking soda cleaning solution, The Maids says to add 1/4 tablespoon of baking soda to a spray bottle filled with water and shake it to mix. Spray the moldy surface and then scrub the mold with a scouring pad, sponge, or brush. Wipe the surface dry and spray again lightly, this time leaving the solution on to prevent mold from growing back. For tough areas, The Maids recommends a baking soda paste made from 2-parts baking soda, 1-part water, and 1-part vinegar. Let the paste dry on moldy spots before scrubbing it off.

5. Hydrogen peroxide

ZikG/Shutterstock

Hydrogen peroxide can be found in most medicine cabinets, which comes in handy if you have a mold problem. Per The Maids, hydrogen peroxide has many uses given its antifungal, antiviral, and anti-bacterial properties. The Spruce notes that it is as effective (while a little slower-working) as bleach, but minus harmful fumes or residue.

If you’d like to try out cleaning mold with hydrogen peroxide, pour a 3% solution directly into a spray bottle. Test-spot a small area to make sure it doesn’t cause damage or discoloration. Spray the peroxide onto the moldy areas until they are very wet and let it sit for 10 minutes. Scrub the mold off and wipe the area dry when you’re done. The Spruce recommends using hydrogen peroxide to clean mold off books and papers, and The Maids notes that it can be used to clean mold on kitchen appliances, countertops, bathtubs, hard flooring, and some wall surfaces.

6. Bleach

Jim Gimpel Photography/Shutterstock

Bleach is commonly marketed as one of the most powerful methods to eradicate mold, but it only works in certain circumstances. Healthline writes that it won’t have long-term effects on porous surfaces, like drywall or wood, because mold roots deeply into them, and bleach will only take care of the topmost layer. On non-porous surfaces, like porcelain bathtubs and tile, bleach will work wonders.

Household or chlorine bleach must be diluted, even when fighting tough patches of mold. Make sure to ventilate the area you are working in by turning on a fan and opening windows to protect yourself from bleach fumes. Mix 1 gallon (16 cups) of water with 1 cup of bleach and add to a spray bottle. Spritz the diluted bleach onto any moldy areas and let it sit before putting in some elbow grease. Scrub the affected areas and then rinse and air dry. Healthline recommends throwing away cloths and sponges used to clean the mold.

7. Borax

sulit.photos/Shutterstock

Like baking soda, borax’s high pH prevents mold growth when you use it to clean. It’s a pretty inexpensive solution to mold issues as well, and The Spruce says it’s even better at removing mold stains than baking soda. That said, though it’s generally safe to use and will not emit fumes or harsh chemicals, borax is toxic if you ingest it, so be extra careful while handling borax if young children and pets are afoot.

Per Hunker, you can make a simple borax solution to treat mold problems by mixing 1 cup of borax with one gallon (16 cups) of water. Dip a scrub brush into the solution and go to town on the moldy surface, wiping it clean with a cloth once you’ve scrubbed the mold off. When you’re done, Zumper recommends leaving borax residue on the wall to prevent mold growth, and to let it dry naturally.

8. Toothpaste

Nataliia Karabin/Shutterstock

Toothpaste isn’t only great at removing stains from your teeth — it’s also not bad at lifting mold stains. Solid white toothpastes are best at cleaning up tough mold spots (and they won’t leave new stains behind like gel ones can), Eco Flood & Mold Remediation writes, and Mrs. Laundry adds you should use one with whitening properties. You can scrub it on molds found in bathrooms — tiles, sinks, showers, and ceilings — or on other hard surfaces, but use caution on how hard you scrub on softer materials (and make sure you test spot).

To use toothpaste to clean up mold and mold stains, moisten the bristles of a cleaning toothbrush with water. Squeeze some toothpaste on top and gently scrub the moldy spot. Depending on the surface, you may be able to scrub vigorously. You can also use a cleaning cloth smeared with toothpaste for delicate surfaces. When you’re finished, wipe down the surface with a dry cloth.

How To Remove Mold in a Tile Shower

Shower Mold Cleaning Tips

By Troy Cantini

Black or red mold can make your tile shower look ugly
and create an unsanitary condition in your home.

Toxic mold growing in the shower grout can start getting into the walls of
your home. Bacteria, germs and other harmful pathogens can also start growing
in your shower that can cause health problems for your family and pets.

Cleaning and removing the mold in your shower requires a
systematic approach using a combination of cleaning products and
procedures.
You not only want to clean up the mold
but to also kill the mold that is growing in the porous grout lines.
Killing the mold win ensure that it will not readily re grow in the shower when the shower is used again.

Moldy shower grout and caulk are typically the main concerns in a tile shower.  The porous grout
is a perfect breading grout for mold to grow. If the grout has not been adequately sealed then the mold can more easily
grow in the grout lines. Moldy caulk is another issue that is almost always present in a moldy shower. If cheap latex
or siliconized caulks were used then the mold can actually grow in the caulking. It is almost always necessary to
remove this moldy caulk let the shower thoroughly dry out to ensure that any mold under the caulking has been killed and removed. Then
only 100% silicone caulking should be used to replace the moldy shower caulk.

When cleaning moldy shower grout in ceramic tile showers a professional
acidic cleaning product works best to clean the shower and kill the
mold in the grout.
Stonetech Restore is a mild acidic tile and grout cleaning product that is extremely effective at killing and removing mold in ceramic tile showers. You can only use Stonetech Restore on ceramic or porcelain tile installations because it will etch delicate stone shower tiles. You can use Stonetech restore on some acid resistant stones such as some types of slate or granite but you should always test these surfaces first before using the Stonetech Restore on them. When cleaning stone tile showers a professional level non acidic soap scum remover must be used for cleaning the shower and removing the shower mold.

When cleaning moldy shower grout in a stone tile shower a professional grade
non acidic soap scum remover works best to remove the soap scum.
MB-3 is a non acidic soap scum remover that is specially formulated to clean soap scum in stone tile showers. It is extremely effective soap scum remover that will not damage, discolor or etch delicate stone tiles. You can also use the MB-3 on ceramic and porcelain tiles but it is more expensive and to use for normal ceramic or porcelain tile cleaning. When trying to remove soap scum in stone tile showers MB-3 is the best available option.

Cleaning and removing the soap scum is the first step to getting rid of the mold in a tile shower.

Soap scum will also contain organic shampoos and body oils that can allow mold to readily grow. You should spray on the soap scum remover and allow it to dwell on
the tiles and grout for at least 20 minutes. You should see a fizzing effect on the grout if you are using the acidic cleaner as it reacts with and cleans the grout. You should not allow the soap scum remover to dry on the tiles and grout so keep adding product for the 20 minute dwell time as needed.

After you have allowed the soap scum remover to loosen up the soap scum then you should scrub away the soap scum with a scrub pad paying particular attention to the grout lines.  Often there will be
a heavy layer of soap scum on the grout lines so you need to ensure that you scrub
away all of the soap scum from the grout. Most ceramic and
porcelain tile showers are scratch resistant so you can use an
aggressive scrub pad to scrub away at the soap scum. When
scrubbing softer stone tiles a soft scrub pad should be
used that will not scratch the finish of the stone tiles.

When you are done cleaning up and removing
the soap scum then you should use a sponge to thoroughly rinse away
all of the excess soap scum remover.

It is important to remove all of the soap scum and cleaning products from the shower tile and grout.  In many showers with heavy
layers of soap scum buildup you may be forced to repeat the soap scum removing process a second or third time to ensure you have gotten rid of all traces of soap scum.

The next step in the mold cleaning process
is to use bleach or a professional mold killing product like MB-9 to kill the
shower mold.
Bleach is safe to use on ceramic and
porcelain tile showers. MB-9 is a professional mold killing
product that is safe for stone tile showers. Bleach can be somehat toxic and should not be used in stone tile showers. Bleach is almost as
effective as MB-9 for killing shower mold and will save you some money when
killing the mold in a ceramic or porcelain tile shower.

You should mix the
bleach one part bleach with one part water and spray it or the MB-9 directly on the
tile and grout and ensure that you get a good saturation of the mold
killing solution on the moldy shower grout.
Allow 5-10 minutes dwell time for the
bleach or MB-9 solution to react with and kill the mold
in the porous grout lines. Wear rubber gloves when using bleach or
MB-9 and do not get any of these cleaning solutions on
good clothes, carpets or other fabrics. Both MB-9 and bleach
solutions will discolor most fabrics.

In most cases a shower that has got mold growing
in it will also have caulking that has become black and moldy.

Mold can not be cleaned from caulk after it has become black and moldy
because the mold is actually growing in the caulk.  In most cases
the caulk must be removed and replaced to ensure that your shower is
totally mold free. You can use a razor blade scraping tool to remove the old moldy caulk.
You can read more about how to recaulk a
shower here
.

When you are done cleaning the mold in you shower grout
and you have removed the moldy caulk then you should wipe the shower dry with a towel or paper towels and let the shower dry overnight.

Thoroughly drying the shower will ensure that the mold will not readily grow back in the
porous shower grout. Mold must have a constant source of water to survive so drying out the shower will kill any remaining mold in your walls and not allow the mold to regrow in the grout.

If you feel that water has gotten behind
your tile and grout and into the walls then you may want to dry out the shower for a few days after you have completed the mold cleaning procedure.
It can also be helpful to set up a dehumidifier or some fans in your shower to get your shower as dry as possible in the shortest amount of time.

After the shower has dried out then you should seal the grout with a quality tile and grout sealer product
Consumer level tile and grout sealers from home improvement stores
will not provide much protection against water penetrating into porous
tiles and grout. Also consumer grade sealers will not last long
and will wear out in a few months of shower use. A one (1) quart
container of sealer will be enough for most
standard size showers and give you enough sealer to apply 2 coats of
the sealer for the ultimate protection against mold in your tile
tile shower.

Apply the sealer using a brush tipped
applicator to just the grout lines.
  Keep applying sealer to
the grout for 5-10 minutes and do not allow the sealer to dry on the tile surfaces. Keep applying more sealer as necessary so that the sealer can be completely absorbed by the
porous grout.

After you are done applying the sealer then
wipe up any residual sealer from the shower tiles and grout with a
cotton towel or paper towels.
 Ensure that all traces of
sealer has been removed from the tile surfaces and inspect the tiles from many angles to ensure that you
don’t have any streaks of sealer that have dried on the tiles. If necessary re-saturate any
area of tiles with sealer to remove any streaks of sealer where it
has dried on the tile surfaces. You should allow the sealer at least 30 minutes time to
dry and then you should apply a second coat of sealer to the
grout lines.

Caulking the shower is the final step in the
ceramic tile shower mold cleaning and removal process.
You should tape up all the shower seems and apply a professional 100% silicone caulk like Laticrete Latasil to the shower. Smaller showers will take
one tube of the laticrete Latasil while larger showers will take two
(2) tubes of the Laticrete Latasil caulk. You should only use 100% silicone caulk
so that mold will not quickly grow in the new caulk.
Laticrete Latasil 100%
silicone caulk comes in many colors to choose from if you need to match the color of your
tiles. If you just need a white or almond colored caulk then GE
Silicone II 100% silicone caulk from the home improvement stores works
great too.

How to remove mold in the bathroom on sealant

Updated: 11/08/2022 15:58:02

Expert: Panteleeva Irina Vladimirovna

Once in the house, mold fungi will never leave it voluntarily. Especially if the conditions are favorable for reproduction and growth. But it is necessary to fight the fungus. Since, in addition to damaging the interior, mold spores are harmful to health.

We will tell you how to get rid of a malicious neighbor. And let’s start with the most favorite place for black mold – the bathroom.

Molds

First, let’s briefly introduce you to the main types of mold and their dangerous properties.

Title

Description

Aspergilus

One of their species is black mold.

Grows on organic food debris.

Grows on walls in damp areas.

It produces toxins that are dangerous to humans.

Causes allergies and severe respiratory problems.

Cladostrium

It has different shades: from red-brown to green.

It breeds in dilapidated unventilated rooms.

Causes skin diseases, is the cause of lung diseases.

Causes depression in people.

Bipolaris

Has a gray color with black patches.

It manifests itself gradually.

Causes respiratory diseases of varying severity.

Suppresses the nervous system.

Physarium

Has a black color

Propagated in the homes of lovers of indoor flowers.

It has a pathological effect on the nervous, respiratory, circulatory and reproductive systems of a person.

Pinecillin

Green mold.

Settles on all food, household items.

Has high toxicity.

Causes swelling of the respiratory system, asthma, skin lesions (eczema), acute poisoning.

As you can see, there is no reason to wait. It is necessary to act at the slightest sign of the appearance of the fungus in the home.

Causes of mold in the bathroom

Knowing the causes of the appearance of the fungus, you can determine how to deal with an unwanted guest and take preventive measures that contribute to its reappearance.

The main causes and their elimination are shown in the table

Reasons for the growth of mold

Solution

high humidity

Eliminate all plumbing leaks, do not store damp rags, towels, washcloths, do not leave containers with water

Cracks or leaks in the seams of building structures that allow moisture to penetrate from the outside

Contact the construction company (if the house is new), or the management organization

Flooding by neighbors from above

Prevent leaks from upper floors. Contact the neighbors and the management company.

1st floor of a house with a permanently flooded basement

You should contact the management company or the housing inspectorate with an application for the repair of plumbing systems

Lack of ventilation

Provide constant air supply. Open doors, install exhaust fans

Low air temperature

Maintain the temperature in the apartment within 20-25 degrees Celsius. If necessary, install an additional heater that will reduce high humidity and increase the temperature in the shower room

Most often, mold grows at the junctions of walls and sanitary ware, where moisture constantly accumulates. A favorite place for fungus is sealant, which we use to stop water from leaking outside plumbing fixtures.

It is necessary to fight the fungus at the initial stage. In this case, there will be no need for drastic measures. In advanced situations, the best option is to completely replace the sealant.

Here are the most effective methods for removing fungus from silicone insulation.

Methods for removing mold from sealant

The initial stages of fungal infection are well washed with a regular sponge and detergent.

In the fight against mold, one important point should be remembered. If the mycelium is not completely eliminated, then the mold is not defeated. It will continue to develop and produce spores. And if improvised means did not help in this fight, then it becomes necessary to use specialized chemicals.

Home remedies

Comparing industrial and home remedies, let’s say that the use of gentle methods undoubtedly wins if they are used regularly for prevention purposes. Chemicals are more aggressive, both for mold and for human health.

Vinegar

Why vinegar? Fungi like to thrive in a slightly acidic or slightly alkaline environment at a pH of 6. 5 – 7.5. To stop growth and reproduction, you need to change the acidic characteristics of the environment, which is what vinegar does. Depending on the degree of damage, we recommend using the following concentrations:

Degree of defeat

Vinegar concentration

Severe contamination (extensive growth of mycelium)

35% vinegar (you need to dilute acetic acid with 70% water in a 1: 1 ratio)

Moderate damage (small spots)

table vinegar with a strength of 9%

The initial stage of fungal growth (single black dots)

apple or wine vinegar 6%

To kill the fungus, do the following:

  1. Liberally moisten the surface of the contaminated sealant with vinegar or apply vinegar-soaked wipes and leave them for 15 minutes.

  2. Scrub stains with a sponge or toothbrush. If the mycelium is not removed, moisten the affected area again and leave for a while.

  3. After removing stains, rinse silicone thoroughly with water.

Hydrogen peroxide

The properties of peroxide are based on its properties as a strong oxidizing agent. Peroxide destroys organic membranes and causes the death of microorganisms, including fungi and their spores. Perhydrol is effective for minor growths of fungal colonies.

To finish the surface of sealed joints, proceed as follows:

  1. Take pharmacy hydrogen peroxide with a concentration of 3%.

  2. Using a sprayer or a napkin, apply the solution to contaminated areas and leave for 30 minutes.

  3. Rinse the surface with water, removing the remaining mold with a brush. Careful use of an old toothbrush will not damage the silicone layer, but it will help to clean out the remains of the mycelium from small depressions.

Chlorine bleaches

Among household chemicals, chlorine is the most radical remedy. Due to the strong oxidizing properties, chlorine ions destroy any organic matter. Chlorine is a substance unsafe for human health. Therefore, you should use it with care. Believe me, light and medium pollution is quite within the power of vinegar and hydrogen peroxide.

To remove old overgrown stains of the fungus, you need to soak them with bleach and leave for half an hour. Then clean the remaining mycelium with an old toothbrush or sponge. Accessories that have been used after removing the fungus are best not reused, but thrown away. They may contain live spores that will germinate as soon as possible.

Hot solution of hydrogen peroxide, vinegar and boric acid

This tool gives no worse result than bleach. To prepare the composition you need to take:

  1. water – 100 ml;

  2. vinegar (9%) – 50 ml;

  3. hydrogen peroxide (3%) – 50 ml;

  4. boric acid – 25 ml.

How to use:

  1. Stir the mixture and heat to a temperature of 70 degrees. Only in this case does it really work.

  2. Apply the solution to the affected sealant and wait a while. The rate of removal depends on the size of the mold and its age.

  3. Sponge to wipe off the remains of the fungus and rinse the surface with running water.

Ammonium chloride

Ammonia (sold in hardware stores) or ammonia solution (pharmacy) is a household remedy that has an antiseptic effect.

How to use:

  1. Apply undiluted alcohol to mold spots.

  2. Withstand 30 min.

  3. Wash the surface of the insulation with a sponge or brush.

It is important to follow the safety rules when working with the drug. It has a pungent odor and is dangerous if it gets into the eyes.

Baking soda

You need to make a slurry of soda powder and water. The preparation is simple, so if the composition is not enough for the entire affected surface, you can cook more.

Operation sequence:

  1. Treat the affected areas at the joints and in the corners with a cleaning paste.

  2. Leave the agent to act for 20 minutes.

  3. Scrub contaminated areas with a brush. Rinse the seams with running water.

Industrial fungicides

The advantage of chemicals is that they contain substances that destroy the mycelium of the fungus and components that prevent the recurrence of mold in the treated area.

“Dali” – universal antiseptic against mold and mildew

It has a wide spectrum of activity, does not contain chlorine, and is safe for all surfaces.

Mode of application:

  1. If possible, clean the colonies of the fungus mechanically with a sponge and soap.

  2. Dry the affected area with a napkin and apply the solution from the spray bottle. Leave on for 1 day and then wash off.

  3. If mechanical cleaning is not possible, the solution must be applied to the spots of mycelium

  4. Re-treat after 6 hours and leave to act for 1-2 days.

  5. Rinse the silicone layer with a brush and water.

Don’t forget about your own safety. The substance has an unpleasant odor and may damage mucous membranes. Therefore, the nose, eyes and hands should be covered with personal protective equipment (gloves, goggles, respirator).

Fongifluid “Alpa”

This product contains active ingredients against mold growth. It is used on various surfaces, including sealant. The drug is sold in canisters and spray bottles. It is very convenient to process insulating seams from the sprayer.

Mode of application:

  1. Carefully remove possible contamination without damaging the integrity of the sealed layer.

  2. Spray the lesions and adjacent areas (for prevention) and leave to act for 4-6 days. Obviously, processing is best done before a short vacation.

  3. Wash the cleaned surface with a sponge and soapy water.

OLIMP Stop Mold

Means for preventing the growth of mold, fungus, putrefactive bacteria, moss and lichen of Russian production. The fungicide works well at temperatures not lower than +5 degrees. It is possible to process various mineral surfaces.

Given the inertness of silicone, its surface will not suffer when treated with this solution. The antiseptic is packaged in a plastic bottle without a sprayer. This is his only disadvantage.

Antifungal treatment:

  1. The OLIMP “Stop Mold” treatment provides for preliminary cleaning of the affected areas. Then you should dry the joints with a napkin.

  2. Apply 2 layers of antiseptic with a brush and leave to act for 24 hours.

  3. The next day, disinfected sutures can be washed with soap and water.

Ceresit STOP PLESEN anti-mold antibacterial agent

The Austrian product is sold in a convenient sprayer and is very easy to use:

  1. The agent must be sprayed onto a dry surface and left to act for 10-15 minutes.

  2. Wipe off mold residues with a sponge and rinse the surface of the sealant with water.

  3. When working, you should ventilate the room and use means to protect the respiratory tract and hands.

Domestos Spray

The Dutch brand offers an effective chlorine-containing antifungal agent. It is conveniently applied to silicone insulation with a spray gun. The exposure time is minimal. It takes no more than 1 minute to clean complex contaminants.

General recommendations for mold control

To prevent the bathroom from becoming a battlefield for the use of chemical weapons, we offer effective preventive measures:

  1. After taking a shower, always wipe moisture from walls and joints treated with sealant.

  2. Leave the doors and vents open in the bathroom.

  3. Repair existing plumbing and plumbing leaks immediately.

  4. Check the condition of the heaters. Often, mold begins to show activity at times of lower temperature and higher humidity.

  5. Once a month, sanitize the surface of the sealant with vinegar.

  6. If pinpoint colonies occur, wash them off with antibacterial soap.

  7. When repairing, use antibacterial finish impregnations and sealants that are resistant to mold growth (eg Ravak, Ottoseal, Lugato).

  8. When repairing, apply sealant so that it has a smooth surface and does not peel off the walls. Removing mold from bumps will be very difficult. And if the fungi germinate under the silicone film, you will have to remove the entire waterproofing layer.

  9. In case of severe contamination of the sealant with mold colonies, we recommend removing the contaminated silicone, disinfecting the surfaces of the shower or bath. Then apply a new layer of waterproofing material.

As Hippocrates said: “It is better to prevent a disease than to cure it.” In our case, this sounds appropriate. It is better not to let an unwanted guest into the house than to waste time and money later on evicting him.

Black mold and fungus in the bathroom: how to get rid of

Black mold, fungus on the walls, tiles and ceiling in the bathroom is a type of fungus that grows well under favorable conditions. It feeds mainly on simple carbohydrates found in organic matter. Black mold is dangerous for humans and animals, as it is one of the causes of nasal congestion, allergies, suffocation, asthma, stomatitis, dermatitis, thrush, conjunctivitis, eczema, bronchitis, laryngitis, pneumonia, cancer, and other human diseases transmitted by the respiratory tract .

Black mold most often appears on ceilings and walls. How to get rid of fungus, mold in the bathroom, how to deal with this scourge? You can, of course, wash the mold in the bathroom with any chlorine-containing compound, such as Domestos (less chlorine stinks – easier to breathe), and paint with a good paint for wet rooms, which contains additives against mold and fungus. But this is a temporary measure, the mold will still manifest itself, it is necessary to eliminate the reasons that favor the appearance and development of black fungus in the bathroom. These are dampness, heat and insufficient ventilation.

Mold in the bathroom, what should I do?

Mold loves temperatures of +20°C degrees, lack of ventilation and drafts and, most importantly, humidity of 80-95%. Accordingly, we first of all need to eliminate precisely these sources of the appearance of the fungus. So, mold in the bathroom, what to do?

To stabilize the humidity in the bathroom, try keeping the bathroom door open, maybe just this measure will suffice. If natural ventilation in the bathroom is not enough, then you need to make forced ventilation.

To do this, insert a fan into the opening of the exhaust air duct and cover it with a ventilation grill from above. We bring the switch to the light switch or to another convenient place. The fan switch can be paralleled with the light switch and the fan will turn on simultaneously with the light. And if you do it completely according to science, then you should install a humidity measuring device in the bathroom – a hygrometer and connect it to the fan through the high humidity sensor so that, being in the high humidity range, the sensor turns on the fan, and turns it off when the humidity drops.

Usually, air enters the bathroom through the gap between the threshold and the lower end of the door, but modern bathrooms often have a blank door. Well, if a door with ventilation holes is installed, and if there are none, then you need to drill them and close them with decorative rings. Thus, we get rid of dampness, now we need to get rid of the black mold itself.

Anti-mold in the bathroom one hundred (Tikkurila ). Often, mold in the bathroom or in the shower cabin appears at the joints between the bathtub and the wall or between the shower tray and the wall, in which case it is necessary to seal the joints with high-quality sanitary sealant, and it is better to use a sealant from a well-known manufacturer, then the fight against mold in the bathroom will be more effective.

Sometimes the water in the bathroom stagnates under the tub itself, which is very difficult to notice. Do not be too lazy to look under the bathroom and if you find water there, then regularly clean it or eliminate the cause of the water there. It could be poor sealing between the bathroom and walls, renew the sealant in those areas. And if the slope of the floor in the bathroom is made under the bathroom – align this slope so that the water does not stagnate under the bath. You can also put underfloor heating, they will dry the air in the bathroom.

How to deal with deep fungal and mold infestations
