A quality steam mop uses steam to lift away grime, scuffs, and stubborn stains, leaving your floor spotless without the use of any cleaning solution. While traditional spin mops and flat mops have likely been on your radar and in your closet for years, it’s very possible that steam mops are a new cleaning product you’re as curious about as Dyson’s latest vacuum.

“Increased interest in steam [cleaning] was a natural evolution of the green trend, as steam doesn’t use any chemicals but packs a super-strong cleaning punch,” stresses Melissa Homer, The Spruce’s Cleaning Review Board member and Chief Cleaning Officer at MaidPro. Steam has the ability to make stains and spills loose, so they’re easy to pick up.

We researched and tested steam mops in The Lab and at home, evaluating their overall efficiency, capacity, steam output, and accessories. Our top pick is the BLACK+DECKER 7-in-1 Multipurpose Steam Cleaner because it heats up quickly, is effective on numerous surfaces, and comes with multiple attachments to help you achieve a deeper clean.

Here are the best steam mops to spruce up your floors.

What do buyers say? 81% of 200+ Amazon reviewers rated this product 4 stars or above.

The BLACK+DECKER 7-in-1 Multipurpose Steam Cleaner blew us away in our testing in The Lab. It comes with multiple attachments and can switch from an upright to a handheld steamer in just seconds. Its outstanding performance and versatility make this steam mop our top pick overall.

When we tested this steam mop, it heated up almost instantly. If you’re looking to clean your floors quickly, this is an important feature. The initial mop setup was straightforward and took less than 10 minutes, which is on par with other steam cleaners and mops. Once we put this steam mop to the test, it got an intense soy sauce stain off our tile flooring and left nothing but fresh, sparkling tile behind. Our tester loved that this steam mop was lightweight and easy to maneuver, earning it 5-star ratings in usability and portability.

Besides being easy to use and powerfully effective, this steam mop comes with a plethora of attachments and tools that really make it a multipurpose cleaning system. While it’s on the expensive side, this one purchase can replace several household tools. Your purchase comes with a 2-in-1 steam mop and handheld steamer, a grout tool, a copper brush, a plastic brush, an adjustable steam nozzle, an accessory hose, a steam-glove accessory, a fabric steamer, and replaceable pads for the mop and steam-glove. The steam-glove is an especially intuitive and clever solution that helps you access hard-to-reach spots an upright or handheld appliance can’t and also apply more dedicated pressure to tough stains. Our testers did note the machine leaked water when changing attachments, so use extra caution when switching from one attachment to another.

If you’re looking for a steam mop with the same power but fewer bells and whistles, you should check out the BLACK+DECKER BHSM15FX08 Multipurpose Steam Cleaner—the latest version of this mop that’s a good bit cheaper. It doesn’t include the steam-glove accessory, which we really loved, but that may not be necessary for your household if you’re sprucing up just your floors.

All in all, if you’re looking for a steam mop that can get your floors clean and do so much more, opt for the BLACK+DECKER 7-in-1 Multipurpose Steam Cleaner.

What Our Testers Say

“The BLACK+DECKER steam mop just seemed really intuitive because it feels like a regular mop or small vacuum. It was very lightweight, and it cleaned well even though it took a bit of time. If you’re new to steam cleaning, this is a good place to start as a beginner. It’s less intimidating than other models.”—Jenica Currie, Product Tester

Bissell PowerFresh Steam Mop Review

What We Like

  • Multiple steam settings

  • Includes scrubber brush

  • Generously sized water tank

What We Don’t Like

The Bissell 1940 PowerFresh Steam Mop works on most types of hard flooring, including sealed hardwood, marble, granite, ceramic, linoleum, and laminate floors. Unlike many other models that produce continuous steam, this one produces three levels of steam on demand to kill bacteria and germs. That, combined with the flip-down easy scrubber brush, earns this mop top marks for getting out tough, dried-on messes (think, days-old cat puke or spilled wine) while still remaining safe to use on your flooring. Plus, it delivers this powerful performance at a reasonable price.

This steam mop doesn’t come with any extra accessories except for BISSELL fragrance discs to leave your floors smelling fresh, so it’s not the most heavy-duty option on the market. It does, however, have a nice 16-ounce water tank that will get you through all your messes. Our real-world tester noted this steam mop was exceptionally easy to use and performed just as well as options that are much more expensive. If you’re looking for something that’s affordable, reliable, and easy to use, this BISSELL steam mop is a great option.

Price at time of publish: $93

Power Source: Corded electric | Surface Type: Hardwood, ceramic, linoleum, granite, marble | Tank Capacity: 16 ounces | Weight: 6 pounds

What Our Testers Say

“Arguably, the best feature of the Bissell PowerFresh Steam Mop is its water tank—a removable 16-ounce bottle that clicks into the unit. It was very easy to refill, much easier, in fact, than some of the more expensive models we’ve reviewed.”—Brie Dyas, Product Tester

Shark Genius Steam Pocket Mop Review

What We Like

  • Comes with two double-sided pads

  • Touch-free pad release

  • Multiple steam settings

What We Don’t Like

The Shark Genius Hard Floor Cleaning System is a popular steam mop for a reason. While it works on a variety of different floor types, our tester was amazed that this mop managed to clean dirt and debris off of her hardwood floors, even though they didn’t look visibly dirty. While it’s a little pricey, several features make the Shark Genius worth the investment. It has three steam settings, including a Steam Blaster option that you can use to target tough messes and dirty grout, but what really makes this steam mop stand out is its double-sided pads.

When using a steam mop, it’s important to change the pads once they’re dirty to avoid spreading germs around your floors. Since the Shark Genius comes with two double-sided pads, you can confidently clean a large area without worrying about spreading dirt around. On top of that, its touch-free release feature saves you from handling damp, dirty cleaning pads.

Our tester noted that the unique circular design of the handle made this steam mop easy to maneuver, and the initial setup was simple, too. For the price, we just wish there was a scrubbing attachment for stickier messes. Also, take note that this is an excellent option for cleaning properly sealed hardwood flooring. As with any steam mop, use on unsealed wood flooring may cause damage to your hardwood floors.

Price at time of publish: $130

Power Source: Corded electric | Surface Type: Hardwood, tile | Tank Capacity: 11.8 ounces | Weight: 5. 8 pounds

What Our Testers Say

“Moving it over the floors was easy and smooth, but we still found ourselves working up a sweat while using the Shark. It was worth it when we saw how much dirt it had picked up already. We thought our wood floors already looked clean, but the mop gave them a little extra sheen. The mop head always revealed that the floors were actually quite dirty, as they ended up grayed by dust and dirt.”—Jolene Buscemi, Product Tester

What We Don’t Like

The Shark S3501 Steam Pocket Mop is a simple, no-frills steam mop that works on a variety of surfaces. We didn’t test this mop, but it’s a beloved option for anyone with tile floors. It doesn’t come with a tile grout brush, but using a cleaning mixture on your tile grout, wiping it away, and then using the Shark mop as the final touch will leave you with a sparkly clean bathroom or kitchen.

This powerful steam mop offers three different settings—dust, mop, and scrub—so you can adjust based on what surface you’re cleaning. Not only is there a level for every type of job, but this machine is also safe to use on most flooring, including laminate. This mop does have a small tank capacity, so it’s not the best option for larger areas, but the included reusable mop pads are double-sided, so you get more cleaning mileage out of each use—whether it’s a quick wipe down or a deep clean.

Have a furry friend in your household? The Pur Steam World Multi-Functional Steam Mop is our pick for pet owners because it can be used on a variety of surfaces and comes with multiple attachments and cleaning pad replacements. Use the handheld steamer to steam clean your couch that your dog insists on jumping on, and then switch to the upright to tackle your floors. The replacement pads make it easy to switch out the cleaning pad if you’ve steam cleaned through a questionable spot on the floor (like the area by the door where accidents tend to happen). We didn’t test this mop, but we believe the numerous features speak for themselves.

This lightweight steam mop will clean and kill germs on almost every type of hard flooring, and it also works on fabric. That means you can use the detachable handheld steamer to steam clean your upholstery, including sofas and drapes, and de-wrinkle clothing, too. Three different steam settings mean you can find the just-right temperature (Though you should always start with the lowest one.), steam away, and then get back to playing with Fido.

Expert Buying Tip

“Always use distilled water in your steamer, even if the manufacturer says you can use tap water. Tap water can leave mineral deposits inside the machine that eventually clog the steam holes and make it stop working.”—Melissa Homer, The Spruce’s Cleaning Review Board member and Chief Cleaning Officer at MaidPro

Bissell PowerFresh Pet Lift-Off Steam Mop Review

What We Like

  • Works on a variety of floors

  • Additional attachments

  • Can function as a handheld steamer

  • Easy to set up

What We Don’t Like

Steam isn’t just helpful for cleaning floors. It can be used to clean numerous other areas of your home, which is why you may want to consider a feature-packed pick like the Bissell PowerFresh Lift-Off Pet Steamer. This steam mop comes with 13 additional attachments that allow you to use it on everything from curtains to grout.

This versatile tool includes a lift-off pod that you can take the handle off of, essentially transforming it into a handheld steamer. The helpful attachments include a window squeegee, fabric steamer, grout tool, flat scraper, extension hose, fragrant disks, and more. This steam mop was incredibly simple to set up, but our real-world tester noted the water tank is a little difficult to fill due to its opening placement on the side of the tank. Once it was filled, the steam mop heated up in less than 30 seconds and quickly cleaned grout, kitchen appliances, and even her furniture.

Although skeptical at first, our tester decided that this steam mop’s higher price tag is justified since it could replace a variety of other household cleaning tools. Take note that it’s a bit bulkier than other options and, thus, harder to store. You’ll likely need to store it in a dedicated space in your laundry room or utility closet.

What Our Testers Say

“The Bissell PowerFresh Pet Lift-Off is one of the most expensive steam mops on the market. While that may dissuade you from purchasing it, its wide variety of uses means you can replace a few of the dated tools in your closet. The Lift-Off has so many other applications—it can be used to clean grout and even serve as a garment steamer—and it’s far more cost effective than buying a handful of additional specialty products.”—Brie Dyas, Product Tester

What We Like

  • Simplifies cleaning routine

  • Can use on multiple surfaces

What We Don’t Like

To properly use a steam mop, you must first vacuum up dirt and debris in the area so that your mop doesn’t just move it around. Wouldn’t it be great if there was an appliance that did both? The Bissell Symphony All-in-One Vacuum and Steam Mop is here to do just that. We didn’t test this product, but it’s one of the only ones on the market that can vacuum and mop, saving you time on chore day.

With the Bissell Symphony, you can easily switch back and forth between vacuuming and steam mop modes, so you can vacuum up your cereal crumbs or cat hair and then immediately mop the area without having to get out another appliance. The vacuum dust bin stays separate (and dry) from the other parts of the machine, but you may notice that the brush roll occasionally clogs. With any two-in-one appliance, sacrifices are made, and here you may have to sacrifice the power of a high-tech vacuum for the convenience of a two-in-one appliance.

The Best Wet-Dry Vacuums for Picking Up Every Kind of Mess

Final Verdict

Our top pick for a steam mop is the BLACK+DECKER 7-in-1 Multipurpose Steam Cleaner because it has everything you need to clean your home. It’s easy to use, comes with multiple attachments, and heats up almost instantly. If you’re looking to spend a little less, opt for the Bissell PowerFresh Steam Mop. It delivers a powerful clean at half the price of other steam mops on the market and features multiple steam settings.

We purchased and tested over a dozen steam mops, steam cleaners, and upholstery cleaners in The Lab to find the best products available. We also tested several steam mops at home to see how they stood up against long-forgotten couch cushion stains and everyday wear-and-tear. Any additional picks were thoroughly vetted and researched based on our testing categories.

During lab testing, we timed the setup of each mop—making note of how long it took to prepare the product for use. Then, we evaluated each model’s effectiveness on a stained tile surface. We noted how many passes it took to clean up a stain and worked with the steam mop’s various features and attachments. After, we rated its versatilityusability, and portability.

At home, testers evaluated additional steam mops on the same attributes after tasking them with real-world situations, like neglected bathroom floors. We boiled down all of our testing insights and research to the steam mops we believe are the very best.

Reservoir Capacity

The reservoir capacity is a top thing you want to consider when shopping for a steam mop because how big or small it is determines how much you can clean at one time. Consider what areas you’ll be cleaning regularly. If you have a larger home, choose a mop with a capacity of around 16 ounces, so you can tackle a lot at one time. If you have a smaller home or are looking for a model that’s portable and lightweight, a larger reservoir may mean a more cumbersome and heavy appliance (though this isn’t always the case). But, if you have a big area to clean, you’ll spend less time refilling the tank. On the flip side, if you’re only cleaning a medium-sized bathroom or a small apartment, a small reservoir will suffice. Most residential steam mops have a 12 to 15-ounce water tank capacity.

“If you’re going to invest in a steam cleaner, do the research and select a model you can actually use and maintain properly,” says Homer. “Beyond the maintenance, look for models with the most versatile attachments, largest tank, and highest wattage heater you can afford, as these key features will really determine how much usage you can truly get out of the machine.”

Steam Output

Do you have kids or pets who leave tough stains behind or floors that might need a more delicate cleaning approach? If so, look for a model with an adjustable steam output so you can crank up (or down) the heat when you need to. This will give you greater control for a more personalized clean. Steam controls vary among different models. Some mops come with specific presets, while others have an adjustable knob for even greater flexibility.

When steam cleaning your floors for the first time, always start on the lowest setting and work your way up to a higher level, if needed. Homer warns even simple residential steam cleaners can cause damage to your skin or your floors, so always follow the instructions when operating your device.

Accessories

A basic steam mop is great for occasional cleaning jobs, but some options come with extra tools that make it easier to reach certain areas of your home. “If you have lots of nooks and crannies, be sure to opt for a steam mop with the proper attachments and, if you need to clean large spaces often, get one with a large water tank,” says Kathy Cohoon, Operations Manager at Two Maids & A Mop. “It never hurts to find a steam mop with a built-in water heater to streamline the cleaning process,” as well.

Popular extras include grout tools, scrub brushes, squeegee tools, and even fabric steamers. Models with special nozzles for windows, blinds, countertops, and car upholstery are typically more expensive than your basic steam mop but are also more versatile and could potentially replace some of your other cleaning tools.

FAQ

  • Once you’ve vacuumed, prepare your steam mop by filling the water tank with distilled water and letting it heat up. Katie Berry, The Spruce’s Cleaning Review Board member, notes, “Filtered water, such as that from a Brita or fridge dispenser, is also fine—the idea is just to ensure there are no minerals like those in water directly from the tap.” The minerals can build up in your appliance, affecting its effectiveness and lifespan.

Your steam mop will usually let you know when it’s ready to go (usually by a light on the handle). Choose your desired level of steam output, starting with the lowest setting. If you have a tough stain to tackle, work your way up to a stronger output. If your pad becomes dirty, have clean ones on hand to change out while using. This way, you won’t be smearing any excess dirt or grime onto the floor.

Steam mops come in different shapes and sizes, and most have an adjustable steam output. However, you want to think about the task you’re trying to complete before starting it as well. “Steam mops are typically not the best for dealing with dust, hair, and other dry debris on floors, so be sure to sweep and/or vacuum before steam mopping for best results,” says Cohoon. “Also, be sure to leave adequate dry time for floors to ensure the shiniest sparkle.”

  • Steam mops should only be used on sealed floors since excess moisture can cause damage to other kinds of surfaces. Generally, steam mops are safe to use on vinyl, linoleum, ceramic or porcelain tile, some types of sealed hardwood, and some laminate flooring. If you’re unsure about whether you can use a steam mop on your particular floors, check with the flooring manufacturer.

If you’d like to test sealed hardwood floors to see if it’s safe to use a steam mop on them, you can do so by dripping a few drops of water onto the floor. If, after five minutes, the water hasn’t been absorbed into the floor, it’s probably safe to use a steam mop. However, Berry stresses to “avoid using a steam mop on any flooring that has warped or which has gaps.” The steam can seep through into these areas and cause damage to the subfloor and trap moisture which can lead to mold.

  • Although there are some dual-function steam mops on the market that use both water and cleaning solution, for most models, you should not put floor cleaner in a steam mop. Most steam mops are designed to be used with water and nothing else. The hot, high-powered steam does a great job of cleaning surfaces on its own.

9 Best Steam Mops of 2022

Amazon

This article was updated in July 2022 to replace previously untested models with reviews of newly tested models from Black & Decker and Euroflex. We also answered frequently asked consumer questions about buying and using steam mops, and explained why you should trust Good Housekeeping’s product recommendations.

For sparkling clean floors without the need for cumbersome buckets, floor cleaning products or, worse, hands-and-knees scrubbing, a steam mop could be the answer you are looking for. Instead of traditional chemical cleaners, steam mops turn plain water into hot steam to dissolve grime, remove tough, dried-on stains and zap everyday dust and dirt with the help of washable, reusable microfiber pads, so there’s nothing to toss or dispose of. As an added benefit, because the steam is so hot, these mops can sanitize germy areas like bathroom floors and pet spaces in a way that other floor cleaners like vacuum cleaners, regular mops, robot mops and hardwood floor cleaners just can’t. Plus many convert into handheld models with an assortment of brushes and other attachments to clean moldy grout, greasy grill grates and dirty windows and even de-wrinkle fabrics.

When we test steam mops in the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab, we time how quickly they heat up, measure how much steam they produce and assess how thoroughly they remove dried-on sticky foods, greasy messes and regular dust and dirt from ceramic and vinyl floor tiles. We time how quickly the floors dry after cleaning and how easy the mops are to fill, use, clean and store. We launder the reusable pads and check special features, like scrubbing brushes or handheld attachments.

How we test steam mops

Jodhaira Rodriguez/Good Housekeeping

When we test steam mops in the Good Housekeeping Cleaning Lab, we base our tests on industry-standard protocols established by ASTM International, an industry group of appliance engineers and technical experts. For steam mops, we time how quickly they heat up, measure how much steam they produce and assess how thoroughly they remove dried-on sticky foods and beverages, like orange juice, cola and spaghetti sauce, and greasy messes like salad oil, along with regular dust and dirt from ceramic tile and vinyl test floors.

We allow these stains to set and dry for 14 hours then pass the mops across them until clean or we reach a maximum of 30 strokes, whichever comes first. In our last test of 17 steam mops, that added up to over 1,000 forward and backward mopping strokes! We time how quickly the floor dries after cleaning and how easy the mops are to fill, use, clean and store. For mops with reusable pads, we launder the pads multiple times to make sure they continue to perform after washing. Any special features, like scrubbing brushes or handheld attachments, are also evaluated.

Is steaming floors better than mopping?

Consider switching to a steam mop if you have a busy household with lots of foot traffic and need to wash your floors often, as it will streamline your cleaning routine and save you from having to buy and stock up on floor-cleaning formulas. Or, if you just want to cut down or eliminate some of the cleaning products in your home, switching to a steam mop is an easy fix!

Unlike just about every other type of floor mop, steam mops reach temperatures high enough to kill germs and bacteria on hard surfaces. Just pass them slowly over areas you want to sanitize — for 20 seconds or 15 passes — to give the steam time to do its job. Steam mops can also provide a deeper clean in homes where kids or pets like to play and lie on the floors. And the fact that they kill germs can give you peace of mind that your floors are really clean for these family members.

A steam mop is an all-in-one system. There are no separate cleaners to buy and store and no heavy buckets to fill and empty. Steam mops work with a reusable microfiber pad or a disposable cloth attached to the head that helps disperse the steam across the floor. As the steam penetrates and softens the grime on your floor, the pad picks it up and traps it. Then, you either toss the disposable cloth or wash and reuse the pad. And since the pad gets tossed or washed when you’re done, steam mops are neater and easier to store than messy, drippy string or sponge mops.

Is it worth getting a steam mop?

It may be, especially if you want to clean your floors without chemicals. But first, there are some things you’ll have to consider.

✔️ Think about what type of floor you’re cleaning. Steam mops are generally safe to use on sheet vinyl, ceramic and porcelain tile floors, however, it is always a good idea to check with your flooring brand to be sure using steam won’t void your floor’s warranty. And keep in mind that most steam mops alone likely won’t whiten dirty or stained grout lines. You’ll need a powerful steam blast or a brush or scrubber for that.

✔️ Consider the mop’s features. We recommend looking for removable, easy-to-fill water tanks with large openings, a swivel head to more easily navigate around corners and table legs, a low profile design to maneuver under cabinet toe-kicks and low furniture, an extra-long cord for extended reach and multiple cleaning pads so you always have a clean one to put on when the one you’re using gets too dirty.

✔️ Who doesn’t need a steam mop? Anyone with hardwood floors. Even though mop manufacturers claim it is safe, we do not recommend using steam mops on wood and laminate floors, even on the lowest steam settings. Few wood floors are completely sealed and in the pristine condition needed to keep the steam from penetrating the finish and warping the wood. Never use a steam mop on waxed, unsealed, peeling or glued vinyl tile or unfinished floors.

✔️ Are there cordless steam mops? In a word, no. To heat to the high temperatures needed to produce steam for cleaning and sanitizing, steam mops need a cord and electricity. Don’t be fooled by online reviews that claim to compare cordless steam mops: Once you read them, you’ll find out that cordless mops don’t produce steam and steam mops all have cords.

Do steam mops really work?

Yes, they do. In our tests, we’ve found they do a great job deep cleaning certain types of floors without cleaning products, a lot of work or a big mess.

The main types of steam mops are:

  • On-demand steam mops where you have to pull a trigger or press a button when you want the steam to dispense. These require a bit more effort but it is nice to have some control over the steam output and to be able to give an extra burst of steam when you come across a stubborn stain or scuff.
  • Continuous steam mops where once it heats up, the steam keeps pumping. These require less effort but may require extra passes on particularly grimy spots.
  • Adjustable steam mops that offer low, medium and high steam levels to suit the cleaning job at hand.

    Great cleaning performance

    User friendly

    Powerful scrubbing brush

    REASONS TO AVOID

    Lacks additional attachments

    No hands-free pad replacement

For a tried and true steam mop that we love to use, the Bissell PowerFresh Deluxe is hard to beat. It’s easy to use and does a great job cleaning just about any floor mess, all for a reasonable price. It produces a powerful and even steam, glides smoothly, and has a nice, articulating cleaning head, making it a breeze to get into those hard-to-reach corners and edges. The cleaning pad’s convenient pull tab allows for easy removal, presenting minimal risk of dirtying up your hands with grime from the floor. The PowerFresh Deluxe also has a handy step release on the back to quickly release the mop head, freeing a large patch of sturdy bristles for getting out those stubborn stains.

The only area in which the Deluxe falls short is regarding attachments. This simple model is solely meant for everyday floor cleaning and doesn’t come with any other attachments or features beyond its two washable mop pads (one soft and one more coarse) and the built-in scrub brush. The mop pads can easily be removed and cleaned after use, though the elastic bands don’t facilitate hands-free removal like some others we tested. But if you’re after a steam mop that does a great job cleaning up floors from the regular spills and dirt of everyday life, the performance and price of the simple yet effective PowerFresh Deluxe will be right up your alley.

    Very useful accessories

    Works well on many surfaces

    Great handling

    REASONS TO AVOID

    Swapping attachments is clunky

Step scrubber only good for spot cleaning

If you’re the type of cleaner who starts wiping the floors and then gets distracted by the grime in the shower grout, the Bissell PowerFresh Lift-Off Pet is the steam mop for you. This powerful steamer is painless to maneuver on just about any surface, reaching into corners and narrow spots with ease. The removable water tank lets you attach a host of included accessories to clean far more than just your floors. A foot-activated scrub brush on the back also enables you to spot clean without breaking stride.

However, for larger areas that need scrubbing, this quick-fix step brush isn’t a long-term solution. The Lift-Off has a host of possible attachments for whatever you’re hoping to steam clean, though swapping between them can be cumbersome because the tank must be removed first. Yet once the unit is set up, every one of its clever attachments does a great job getting things clean. If you’re after the steam mop for more than just your floors, this is the one for you.

    Many attachments

    Detachable handle

    Cleans multiple surfaces

    REASONS TO AVOID

    Wobbly head

    Short cord

The PurSteam 10-in-1 is a versatile steam-cleaning device. The unit’s ten attachments allow the user to move from the kitchen floor to the carpet and even the sliding glass door, cleaning each surface effectively. The handle also detaches for easier management, storage, and water tank filling, and the heating element turns the water to steam in around a minute — impressively fast. Moreover, the PurSteam comes with three Velcro-backed pads that are machine washable. All these features and more come at a highly competitive price, and this unit is often available at well below its list price.

While we like the numerous attachments and quick heating time of the PurSteam, we did not like its flimsy feel. Specifically, the head of the mop is rather loose, requiring extra effort to keep it moving in a straight line. Additionally, this mop does not clean as well as some of the higher-priced mops. The PurSteam will get the job done on the tough stains and caked-on dirt, but cleaning these messes requires a little more time. With this in mind, we think that the unit is priced correctly and that the casual user will be happy with its performance. After all, the unit is among the more adaptable steam mops on the market.

Massive water tank with great pressure

    Easy to swap between attachments

    REASONS TO AVOID

Head only pivots side to side

    Small cleaning pads soil quickly

    Very expensive

The Dupray Neat Steam has by far the largest water tank of any model we tested, and that’s just the beginning of what makes it an excellent choice for deep cleaning. So you don’t get worn out moving the tank back and forth across the floor, this mop takes a unique approach, putting the water tank on wheels and letting it follow you around while you scrub. Not only does this make it easier to move around, swapping between attachments at the end of the hose is as simple as pressing the release button. A plethora of rugged accessories help you tackle serious grime just about anywhere in your home.

Of course, all this extra water takes far longer to heat than any other model. While most mops are ready to steam in under a minute, the Dupray requires a full 8 minutes to heat up. Its mop head attachment also only pivots from side to side, making it difficult to adequately clean under cabinets or furniture. Though it comes with three thick pads, they are all rather small and soil quickly during use. We’re big fans of the seriously rugged scrubbing attachments, though, and every time there’s a tough mess to tackle, we reach for the Dupray.

    REASONS TO BUY

    Excellent cleaning performance

    Easy to use and maneuver

    Vacuums and steams simultaneously

    REASONS TO AVOID

    Expensive

    No hands-free pad changing

The Bissell Symphony steam cleans and vacuums simultaneously, allowing you to pick up debris and sanitize your kitchen floor in one fell swoop. For those who find themselves cleaning high-traffic areas several times a week, this can vastly cut down on overall cleaning time. Some do-it-all machines fall short, but the Symphony performs its double duties exceptionally well, keeping the contents of its dust tank dry, so it’s easy to discard while still blasting away stuck-on filth and stains with steam. It comes with a scrubbing pad for extra stubborn stains, which easily cut through all of the set-in grime we threw at it during our testing. It’s easy to turn off the steam and simply use this as a stick vacuum on your carpets, or you can purchase the carpet glide attachment to use the steam to deodorize your rugs.

If you need to clean up stubborn stains or deeply rooted grout grime, the relatively simplistic Symphony falls a little short. It lacks any additional accessories to really get into those harder areas or put extra elbow grease into serious stains. We’re not particularly impressed with its performance on tile, without any scrubber pad, but it still does the job for everyday dirt. If you’re more of a frequent-and-casual cleaner, this combo mop/vacuum may be exactly what you’ve been looking for to streamline your cleaning process.

    Why You Should Trust Us

We researched more than 50 mops for this review before compiling a list of the models most likely to serve our readers well. We then bought those mops and, as always, paid the full list price (we never want to be swayed by gifts from manufacturers). Next, we brought them into our testing lab to run them through their paces. This involved creating controlled messes of mud, ketchup, and grime and making cleaning passes with each mop, one right next to the other. We also filled and refilled water tanks, changed and washed cleaning pads, timed heating cycles, and ran each mop into the tightest crevices and most acute corners we could find, all to assess relative user-friendliness and maneuverability. To top it all off, we used all of the extra bells and whistles each mop offers to discover whether these additional features might be helpful in the average home.

Our comprehensive testing is grouped into four weighted rating metrics:

    • Cleaning Performance (40% of overall score weighting)
    • Ease of Use (25% weighting)
    • Maneuverability (20% weighting)
    • Features (15% weighting)

This review is headed by veteran Research Analyst Michelle Powell. Michelle has over a decade of experience working in the commercial foodservice industry, giving her a ton of hands-on experience with deep cleaning. She’s backed up by Maggie Nichols, a longtime gear tester with a background in scientific research. Both of these analytic testers live in muddy mountain towns with pets and variable hard surface flooring, providing ample opportunity to test these mops.

In this most recent update, the review team was joined by Nick Miley, and Genaveve Bradshaw. Nick has over a decade of consumer product review work under his belt, backed by a master’s degree in environmental sciences. Genaveve’s diverse professional background makes her well suited to the practicalities of testing and rating products such as steam mops.

Attachments allowed much more diverse areas to be cleaned than just the floor. How easily do these mops come apart? We tested that too. There was a surprising amount of diversity between the different water tanks and how they get filled.

    Analysis and Test Results

We did a deep dive to find the best steam mops, combing through spec sheets to find those most likely to deliver a good performance. We then spent over two weeks dirtying floors and cleaning them up to see which mops cleaned the best, were easiest to use, and were the most maneuverable. We also tested any extra features each mop offered. From there, we scored all of these attributes, weighting things like cleaning performance more highly than features, to arrive at scores on a scale of 0-100. The full results of all this testing are discussed below.

    Value

In so many instances, you’ll trade some amount of performance to get a great price on a product. But every now and then, a product manages to be the best of the bunch and save you money. That’s the case with the Bissell PowerFresh Deluxe. This impressive steam mop outperformed the rest, snagging our top award while still being one of the less expensive models we tested. The PurSteam 10-in-1 is a solid budget pick if you can find it below its list price, which we commonly did. The PurSteam is not the best steam cleaner, but it offers a variety of attachments that make it useful throughout the house.

We put these mops to the test cleaning all kinds of floors to see which ones stand out in certain areas.

    Cleaning Performance

As you might guess, we consider cleaning performance the most important aspect of any steam mop. Therefore, we assigned 40% of each product’s overall score based on its results in our cleaning tests. We purposefully tracked mud onto a variety of sealed stone and tile floors before we began our testing. We carefully pretreated our floors with stains, deep cleaned grout, and tested each mop’s performance on standard wear in high-traffic areas.

    General Tile/Stone Cleaning Performance

When cleaning tile and stone flooring (the only types of flooring where we would use a steam mop), all of the mops did an adequate job. However, there was a clear distinction between models that did great and those that simply did well. Two outstanding models excel at cleaning both synthetic flooring and tile — the Bissell PowerFresh Deluxe and Dupray Neat Steam. Three of the Bissell models — the PowerFresh Deluxe, Symphony Pet, and the Lift-Off Pet — as well as the Dupray Neat — all also do an exceptional job at synthetic floor cleaning. These mops could easily lift grime and dirt from hard floors, usually in a single pass.

The Bissell Symphony cleans exceptionally well and includes a built-in vacuum cleaner.

    Credit: Laura Casner

With its integrated vacuum that works simultaneously with the steam mopping function, the Bissell Symphony sets itself apart from the competition. This one-two punch cuts your cleaning time in half since you don’t have to sweep beforehand. The Bissell PowerFresh Slim 3-in-1, Shark Genius Steam Pocket, and Shark Lift-Away Pro also do an above-average job cleaning both tile and synthetic flooring. However, they lack the extra convenience of the Symphony’s vacuum/mop combo.

The ‘burst of steam’ feature available on the Shark Lift-Away Pro and the Shark Genius Steam Pocket can cut through stubborn messes.

    Credit: Jenna Ammerman

A few models, including the PurSteam and the O-Cedar Microfiber, could clean hard surfaces decently well but require more passes and more effort overall to get the job done. We generally had to go over areas at least twice with these budget models before they were truly clean. Still, we found it faster to clean with all of these models than with your standard mop.

The Bissell PowerFresh Lift-Off Pet does a great job cleaning your floors.

    Credit: Laura Casner

    Stubborn Stain Performance

The majority of steam mops are most effective when used for regular cleaning rather than for removing stubborn stains that have spent a long time setting into the tile. That said, we went on a quest to find tile floors with old, set-in stains and were surprised at how well some of these models clean up old grime.

The water tank of the Bissell PowerFresh Lift-Off Pet lifts away from the main body of the mop, allowing you to attach a multitude of powerful scrubbing accessories to its included hose.

    Credit: Laura Casner

By far, the most impressive contender for tackling heavy-duty build-up is the Dupray Neat Steam. This powerful mop puts out tons of steam when you need it most, with good pressure and a giant water tank to go the distance. It comes with a plethora of easily swapped-out attachments, so you always have the right tool for the job. We loved using this steamy cleaner on far more than just our floors and found it the perfect companion for scrubbing tile showers, countertops, and built-up backsplashes. When it comes to deep cleaning just about any hard surface in your home, the Neat Steam is tough to beat.

The Dupray Neat Steam comes with a host of attachments and powerful steam designed for deep cleaning.

    Credit: Laura Casner

The Bissell PowerFresh Deluxe and PowerFresh Lift-Off Pet are two other impressive performers in this metric. These models both come with excellent mop pads that do a shockingly good job on their own, as well as scrubbing components when you need a little bit of extra oomph in your effort. The PowerFresh Deluxe quickly and easily pops away from the mop head using a simple step release, leaving you with a large scrubbing brush to dig into tough stains. The Lift-Off Pet features a flip-down scrubber behind the mop head that you push down with your foot to spot clean difficult areas. Both have top-notch steam pressure that makes cleaning that much easier.

The scrubbing brush of the PowerFresh Deluxe is the best tool we’ve found for stubborn stains.

    Credit: Jenna Ammerman

The Bissell Symphony Pet and PowerFresh Slim also have great pressure for consistent cleaning and mop pads that do an above-average job cleaning difficult stains without having to switch out for additional attachments. However, they don’t score quite as well as the previously mentioned models, as they lack any additional scrubbing or scraping attachments for those times when you need a little something extra.

The Bissell PowerFresh Slim is one of several models that does a great cleaning job even without adding in the many attachments.

    Credit: Laura Casner

    Ease of Use

Though generally simple to operate, some steam mops are more user-friendly than others. We based each mop’s ease of use score on the functionality of three main components: the water tank, steamer, and cleaning pads. We judged the water tanks based on size, how easy they were to fill and empty, and how long they took to heat up. We rated cleaning pads by how easy they are to swap out during use and their ease of cleaning once soiled.

Overall, almost every mop we tested heats up rapidly, producing steam within one minute of being plugged in. The only exception to this quick heat-up time is the Dupray Neat Steam, which takes a full eight minutes to heat up. However, it also holds 3-4 times the amount of water as most models — and up to 8x as much water as some — in its 1600ml tank.

Filling and using the Dupray is easy and always helps us get tough jobs done.

    Credit: Laura Casner

By a slim margin, the Bissell PowerFresh Deluxe proved itself overall the easiest to use. It feels quite solid and can reliably stand up on its own — an underrated feature that makes storing and stepping away from the mop for a moment vastly easier to do. It comes with two thick, elastic pads of different textures that are easy to get on and off and simple to toss in the washing machine to clean. It has one of the larger tank capacities we tested, fitting 562ml of water when full, with a flip-open lid on a clear tank that makes it easy to see how much water you have left.

The large water tank opening and included measuring cup of the PowerFresh Deluxe.

    Credit: Jenna Ammerman

The Shark Genius Steam Pocket is near the top of the pack too. This model separates itself from the rest of the field with its touch-free pad changing, nearly-instant steam, and a water tank that is easy to fill. Its water tank is clear, and everything heats up in under a minute. The included pad is double-sided, and the power button features hands-free operation. It only falls short in its slightly squirrelly handling. The mop head pivots in every direction very easily, making it a bit challenging to push it in a straight line, particularly over textured surfaces. The Bissell Symphony Pet also performs quite well in this metric. It can easily stand on its own when you need your hands elsewhere, and the elastic pads are easy and simple to change in and out during use.

The ergonomic handle of the Bissell Symphony.

    Credit: Laura Casner

The Bissell PowerFresh Lift-Off Pet is another fairly easy-to-use model. It has easily changed washable pads and can stand up on its own. It feels solid to use and has a clear tank. It only loses points because of its slightly oddly placed tank opening that forces you to turn the mop on its side to fill. The Bissell PowerFresh Slim and Shark Lift-Away Pro are also worth mentioning in this metric. The Slim is only slightly less impressive than other Bissell models because of its top-heavy design, making it slightly more awkward to use and preventing it from standing up on its own. The Shark Lift-Away Pro has hands-free mop pad changing but also the same overly-mobile head that pivots a bit too much and prevents it from standing upright. Its water tank is also closed by a screw-top, and the sides are semi-opaque, making it difficult to see the water level.

The hands-free pad changing of both the Shark Lift-Away Pro and the Shark Genius Steam Pocket is incredibly convenient for big cleaning jobs.

    Credit: Jenna Ammerman

    Maneuverability

One of the most tedious aspects of cleaning floors can be scrubbing hard-to-reach spots, including corners and narrow sections between appliances. We tested maneuverability by mopping various spaces and assessing mop head glide, corner and edge cleaning, and cord length. The top scorers in this metric glided smoothly across any surface and left no nooks or crannies unclean.

The most maneuverable model we tested is the Bissell PowerFresh Slim. Though many others glide just as well or have cords just as long, this nifty little steam mop outstrips the rest when it comes to getting into tight spots. Its elastic pads cover all edges of the mop head, allowing you to use any side, and it easily turns sideways to fit into narrow areas. Unlike other Bissell models, the Slim’s mop head is straight on all four sides to better follow the edges in your home from any angle. It’s also a touch smaller than the Shark models we tested, helping it to squeeze into all but the tightest spots.

It’s hard to find fault with the maneuverability of the super narrow and impressively dextrous Bissell PowerFresh Slim.

    Credit: Laura Casner

Second place in this metric is a four-way tie between two Bissell models — the PowerFresh Deluxe and PowerFresh Lift-Off Pet — and two Shark models — the Lift-Away Pro and Genius Steam Pocket. The Bissells glide very smoothly on all but the roughest of floors, with just a few points lost for the curved backs of their mop heads, making them more difficult to use all four sides. The Shark models are the opposite — they have huge pads with straight sides that easily turn sideways and pivot in any direction. However, their large pads catch a bit on more textured floors, like ceramic tile and stone.

The Genius slides under cabinets quite easily.

The Dupray Neat Steam glides like a pro but loses out here with its unidirectional head that only tilts from side to side, making it difficult to get under furniture. The Bissell Symphony Pet glides smoothly, even with its added wheels to support vacuum functionality. However, the vacuum section sets the mop pad slightly behind when going straight forward, leaving a small portion of the floor unmopped.

The Dupray Neat Steam has a slender profile that moves easily, but it only pivots from side to side, making it harder to clean under furniture.

    Features

While some of the mops we tested are spartan in their features, others come with an array of attachments and accessories that make them much more functional cleaning machines. We put every attachment and feature to the test, scrubbing anything in our homes that we could reach, and we also tested included functionalities like cleaning brushes and steam adjustability.

The Black+Decker 7-in-1, PurSteam 10-in-1, and Shark Lift-Away Pro lead the pack in this metric. All of these mops come with a ton of additional (and useful) components and accessories, as well as extra mop pads. The steam settings on these devices remain adjustable in their various configurations. However, it’s worth keeping in mind that swapping between tools isn’t always the easiest on the PurSteam and Shark Lift-Away Pro.

The vast tool chest of attachments that come with the Black+Decker 7-in-1 makes this mop a formidable cleaning tool.

    Credit: Abriah Wofford

The Dupray Neat also comes with many extra tools and features. It has extra mop pads, a cleaning brush, and a hose attachment to further your reach. Swapping accessories in and out with just a simple push of a button is effortless. However, there’s no adjustability to its steam setting, so it loses a few points in that arena.

The Dupray Neat Steam comes with a ton of accessories built for deep cleaning far more than just your floors.

    Credit: Laura Casner

The Bissell PowerFresh Slim 3-in-1 and Bissell Lift-Off Pet also include numerous accessories, but it’s not quite as easy to swap between them. They both also only include a single mop head and two steam settings — low and high. The PowerFresh Deluxe and Symphony Pet also have just low and high settings for their steam expulsion. The Symphony Pet is the only model we tested with both vacuum and steam mop functions, allowing you to clean faster and with fewer tools. However, it lacks any other accessories, coming with just an extra mop pad. The Shark Genius Steam Pocket lacks any extra pads, features, or cleaning accessories but has the most adjustable steam levels of any model we tested.

The Bissell Symphony Pet may not come with other fancy features, but still has the unique combo of vacuum and mop we love.

    Conclusion

Anyone with a sealed hard surface floor in their home (i.e., not hardwood) can benefit from having a steam mop around for at least occasional cleanings. Whether you’re after something simple to take the hassle out of the old mop and bucket set up or something that tackles showers and countertops just as easily as floors, there’s a steam mop for your home, lifestyle, and budget.

Before You Buy a Steam Mop

Steam mops generally are safe for use on ceramic tile, grout, sealed wood floors, linoleum, or laminate floors, and some can be used on carpet. However, always check the care instructions from your flooring manufacturer to avoid accidentally voiding a warranty.

What to Consider When Choosing the Best Steam Mop

When searching for the best steam mop for a home, there are a variety of factors that can make one mop better than another. Some of these features can include the size of the rooms, the types of floors, and the steam settings desired. Below are details about these and more factors to consider.

    Corded vs. Cordless

Corded steam mops usually come with a 20- to 25-foot cord, but some have longer cords in the 30-foot range. Cleaning the floors in a home without needing to frequently unplug a mop and then plug it into another outlet is often an ideal scenario. So, a long cord is helpful for those who have large spaces to clean.

Another option is a cordless steam mop that relies on batteries. The best cordless steam mops have a battery life of at least 1 hour. However, depending on the size of the home, an hour may or may not be enough time. For this reason, looking at battery charge time is a good idea. Some steam mops need up to 2 hours or more to charge. If the job needs to be done in one pass with a cordless mop, having extra batteries can help avoid the need to stop mopping and waiting up to 2 hours for a charge.

    Steam Settings

Some steam mops come with different steam settings that make them suitable for various floors. These settings control the amount of steam coming out of the mop so that it can be adjusted based on floor type to avoid possibly damaging flooring.

The different settings also are great for tough stains. If floors can take the heat at any temperature, cranking up the steam for mud, crayon, and other stains can save time and scrubbing. For a deep clean, look for a steam mop that reaches between 140 and 179. 6 degrees Fahrenheit.

Some hardwood flooring companies advise against using steam mops on hardwood or engineered floors. If the floor manufacturer says it’s OK to use steam, the best steam mop for wood flooring is one with an adjustable steam control and an absorbent mop pad that leaves minimal moisture on the floor’s surface. According to The National Wood Floor Association (NWFA), using steam or excessive water might damage a wood floor over time.

    Water Tank Capacity

Steam mops have a built-in reservoir that holds water, so there is no need to lug a bucket around. Tank size varies, but a bigger tank allows a longer cleaning session. The average water reservoir holds about 11 to 13 ounces. For most models, that means it will take between 20 and 30 seconds to heat up before it will produce steam.

Having a larger tank also makes the mop heavier, and a smaller reservoir is lighter but it has to be refilled more often. The best water reservoir capacity depends on these weight and time considerations, especially on how much square footage is typically cleaned at a time.

A removable water tank makes filling and emptying the reservoir easier. Mops with an attached tank require using a cup to fill the reservoir. Plus, the mop will have to be turned upside down to empty one that has an attached reservoir.

    Mop Pads/Cloths

Most steam mops come with washable, reusable pads made from terry cloth or microfiber. The cloths are typically machine washable (on the delicate cycle and with minimal detergent) and can last for a couple dozen cleanings.

The mop might come with only one or two extra reusable pads, but extra pads or even third-party mop covers that will fit your mop can be purchased separately. It’s a good idea to have extras on hand to avoid running out during a mopping session.

    Ease of Use

Several features affect the usability of a steam mop and make it easier to control, carry around, and operate.

    • Weight affects how easy or difficult it is to carry the steam mop around a room and a house. The lighter the steam mop, the easier it is to use.
    • Swivel heads will get around corners and furniture, eliminating struggles while cleaning around items in a room.
    • Detachable steam generators allow steam cleaning other areas of the house, like appliances, windows, and countertops.
    • Empty-tank indicator will show when the tank is empty.
    • Ready light indicator signals when the mop is ready to go.

    Versatility

Almost every home has odd nooks and crannies that are almost impossible to clean. Like traditional mops, steam mops have different features depending on the model purchased. Some of these options include swivel mopheads and detachable components for cleaning those hard-to-reach areas in a home. Some steam mops include a detachable handheld steamer for cleaning curtains, appliances, and other surfaces.

Many steam mops come with several attachments that serve a different purpose. Some options include attachments for deep cleaning, scrubbers, extra cleaning pads, upholstery tools, ironing attachments for curtains, and squeegees for windows and glass. Though these bells and whistles can make the mop more expensive, they also make it a more versatile cleaning tool for the entire house.

We researched product specifications and consumer reviews to gauge steam mop performance for each respective category. Many of the above mops are capable of cleaning multiple surfaces including hardwood, tile, pet messes, and dirt.

    FAQs

Now that you know more about steam mops, there may be new unanswered questions popping up. For more information about the best steam mops, check out these answers to some of the most frequently asked questions. If additional concerns arise, contact the manufacturer.

Q: What can you use a steam mop on?

Steam mops generally are safe for use on ceramic tile, grout, sealed wood floors, linoleum, or laminate floors, but always check the care instructions from your flooring manufacturer to avoid accidentally voiding the warranty.

Q: Why aren’t steam mops safe for vinyl floors?

It is best to err on the side of caution and avoid using steam mops on vinyl floors. The high heat and moisture can cause damage if seams or adhesives are breached.

Q: What is the best steam mop for hardwood floors?

One of the best options for hardwood floors is the PurSteam Steam Mop Cleaner. With the three adjustable modes of steam, it is a safe option for hardwood floors.

Q: How do you use a steam mop?

    2. Fill the water tank with distilled water.
    3. Plug in or turn on the steam mop, and then let it heat up.

Q: How do you clean a steam mophead?

Most steam mop manufacturers provide detachable heads that you can throw directly into the washing machine. You can wash them with dirty rags and other cleaning materials. You can usually use bleach if you like.

    Types of Steam Cleaners

A quick search for the best steam cleaner will reveal a variety of products and options. Understanding the differences among the types of carpet and upholstery steam cleaners can help shoppers select the right product for specific needs.

    Handheld Steam Cleaners

Handheld steam cleaners are small enough to hold and carry around the home. They typically come with a variety of attachments that facilitate cleaning such things as appliances, countertops, windows, and flooring materials in addition to carpets and furniture. But they are best suited for smaller tasks, such as removing a stain from the sofa, and would not be the best option to steam-clean all the carpets throughout the home.

    Canister Steam Cleaners

Canister (also known as cylinder) steam cleaners are a good option for bigger steam-cleaning tasks, thanks to a large water tank, typically between 40 and 48 ounces. This allows the machines to produce steam for up to 50 minutes at a time. At about 10 pounds, the ample tank makes canister steam cleaners heavier than some other options, but most have wheels for easy maneuverability during operation on carpets and hard floors. Most canister steam cleaners come with numerous attachments, such as extension tubes, triangular accessories, and brushes, for targeted tasks on draperies, carpet, and upholstery.

    Steam Mops

Steams mops have the convenient maneuverability of traditional mops but benefit from upgraded power and efficacy thanks to their steam-cleaning ability. Steam mops generally have smaller tanks than other types of steam cleaners, but those small tanks are a feature of their compact, lightweight, easy-to-store design. Look for an option with a flexible joint at the handle/head connection to facilitate reaching under furniture. These types of steam cleaners are best for hard surfaces such as vinyl and linoleum, though some models have accessories meant for soft or uneven surfaces such as carpets or tiles.

    Vacuum Steam Cleaners

Vacuum steam cleaners, often referred to as carpet cleaners, employ a sucking action, much like a standard household vacuum cleaner. These products use hot water plus a cleaning solution to release stains and odors from carpets. Folks needing to clean an entire carpet, as opposed to just spot cleaning, might want to use a vacuum steam cleaner, which can handle a larger area more easily.

The vacuum action will help remove excess water while sucking trapped dirt out of carpets, helping carpets dry more quickly. Like carpet deodorizers, vacuum steam cleaners also can help remove odors and leave carpets smelling fresh. In addition, many units include an upholstery tool designed to steam-clean furniture and stairs.

What to Consider When Choosing the Best Steam Cleaner

When trying to select the best steam cleaner to meet one’s needs, there are a few key features to consider. Since there are so many types of steam cleaners and available options, knowing which features are needed may help simplify the user’s decision.

    Compatible Surfaces

The best steam cleaner depends on its intended use. The breadth of their cleaning and sanitizing ability means they’re useful for both routine chores and deep-cleaning anything that can’t tolerate traditional washing or scrubbing. However, there are a few surfaces that cannot handle the high temperature of steam, such as unsealed floors or painted walls.

That said, steam cleaners are generally compatible with an extensive list of hard and soft surfaces, including floors, such as vinyl, laminate, tile, carpet, and sealed wood; bathroom fixtures, including shower glass and grout; and appliances, including gas hobs and oven interiors. In addition, they may be used on countertops, windows, furniture, upholstery, and drapery.

    Attachments

In addition to savvy upholstery cleaning tips, targeted cleaners, and stain removers, a steam cleaner with the right attachments can help spiff up furniture and draperies. A quality brush attachment, for instance, is often the go-to when it comes to vanquishing set-in stains on furniture. But that’s just the beginning of steam-cleaner accessories. Some may feature tools to clean grills, toilets, countertops, windows, appliances, mattresses, and more, so consider the scope of your cleaning tasks and choose a model with the implements to address your to-do list.

Keep in mind the size and number of included attachments as well. For example, it will take a lot longer to clean a carpet with a model that has a 3-inch carpet attachment than it will with a vacuum steam cleaner boasting a wider cleaning head.

    Portability

A quality steam cleaner will be the right size and weight to allow easy movement throughout the house or facilitate lifting to reach high-up areas. Corded options offer unlimited power but need access to an outlet. Steam cleaners with wheels follow the user and require less lifting.

    • Weight: Smaller, lighter steam cleaners are easier to carry and store, while larger models (up to 20 pounds or more) may be more challenging to use. If the scope of the job is significant or requires moving up and down stairs, a lighter option will be easier in the long run. Remember to consider tank capacity when evaluating weight, as a large tank completely full will add quite a few pounds to the machine.
    • Corded vs. cordless: Steam cleaners come in corded and cordless (battery-operated) models. Cordless versions offer greater convenience and portability, since they’re not tethered to an electric outlet. However, run time is limited, and it can be inconvenient if the battery dies in the middle of a cleaning task.
With a corded steam cleaner, runtime is unlimited. Plus some corded models have a more powerful, better-performing motor than cordless options. But corded steam cleaners need an outlet, so users may find themselves frequently unplugging and replugging to get a big job done. Keep cord length in mind when considering a corded steam cleaner. The longer the cord, the larger the area that you can clean uninterrupted.
    • Wheels: Wheels generally are found on canister steam cleaners to make it easier to move these larger and heavier machines. Consider where the machine needs to travel to determine if wheels will add to the bulk of the machine or if they’ll minimize the need for lugging it around.

    Additional Features

In addition to the features mentioned above, look for a product that holds a sufficient amount of water and heats up quickly enough to keep the job on track. Remember that different surfaces tolerate different levels of steam pressure, so the best steam cleaners for carpets also offer adjustable settings.

    • Tank capacity: The scope of common cleaning jobs will dictate how large a water tank to choose. Some handheld steamers with a capacity of just 10 or 12 ounces produce steam for only 15 minutes or less. A canister or vacuum steam cleaner may hold closer to 50 ounces of water and be able to run for about an hour. For frequent long cleaning sessions, a larger tank may be better. It can be frustrating to stop and refill a small tank several times during the course of a cleaning task.
    • Heat-up time: Heat-up time on most steam cleaners is relatively short. Most models offer a heat-up time between 25 seconds and 8 minutes, though some cleaners can take up to 12 minutes to heat. Interestingly, tank capacity isn’t always correlated with heat-up time, so be sure to check the product specifications if you’re going to be working for longer periods of time and don’t want to wait for steam with each refill.
    • Steam settings: Many steam cleaners have two or more different settings that allow users to adjust the pressure and thereby control the flow rate, which is the amount of steam the cleaner emits. The lower pressure settings have a flow rate of around 15 grams per minute, and the higher pressure settings have a flow rate of around 30 grams per minute. Lower settings are best suited to safely cleaning delicate surfaces, such as silk upholstered furniture, while the higher settings would work harder, ideal for powering out tough stains on synthetic carpeting, for instance. Steam cleaners with only one pressure setting are likely run at around 30 grams per minute.

    Our Top Picks

The products below represent some of the most popular steam cleaners on the market. We tested them all in real-world conditions and found them to be effective and durable machines in their respective categories. It’s likely that one of these models will fill the bill for your steam-cleaning needs.

In testing, this Pure Enrichment model proved to be a powerful machine, effectively cleaning hard and soft surfaces with ease. The wide wheelbase and long power cord made it easy to maneuver and access hard-to-reach areas. The plethora of accessories came in handy, and we especially appreciated the scrub pad and utility brush attachments that made getting dirt and grime from grout and window tracks easy.

However, we found the triangular mophead attachment to be a bit too small, which made it take longer than anticipated to clean our laminate living room floor. Though we appreciated all the attachments, we believe they could present a storing challenge to folks with limited space.

The versatile PurSteam 10-in-1 works as an upright steam mop and a handheld steam cleaner with various accessories. It features a detachable handheld unit that doubles as the steam mop’s water reservoir. The corded machine is designed primarily to clean hard surfaces but can be used to refresh carpets and upholstery.

This steam mop has two standout features. First, there’s the folding handle, which allows for compact storage in tight spaces. Second, the water heats up in just 30 seconds, a blessing when a quick cleanup is required. Switching to handheld mode is simple: Pop it out of the upright stand, and it’s ready to go! Although it proved easy enough to control the intensity of the steam via a dial on the water reservoir, the only way to stop the flow of steam entirely is to turn off the machine. Overall, this PurSteam performed well as a steam mop and handheld unit, and its economical price is hard to beat.

The PurSteam Handheld Pressurized Steam Cleaner is a lightweight and portable option that makes short work of spot cleaning throughout the house. This corded steamer can safely be used on many surfaces, including cotton and wool carpets, bedding, upholstery, laminate, granite, and wallpaper. It comes with a nylon brush, an ironing brush, an extension hose, and six other accessories to simplify a host of cleaning tasks.

This small but powerful machine heats up fast, producing steady steam that effectively softens built-up grime. We found it to be easy to use and particularly favored the bent nozzle and extension-hose accessories, which made tackling tough chores such as cleaning window tracks and tight, hard-to-reach areas on our grill a breeze.

At just over 5 pounds, the unit did start to feel a bit heavy after prolonged use. There’s also no dedicated place to wrap the cord for storage—it must be wound around the machine’s body. Nonetheless, it’s a handy tool to help make your cleaning tasks easier.

    Product Specs

    • Type: Handheld
    • Water-tank capacity: 5 ounces

The Steamfast SF-370 steam cleaner features a variety of useful attachments, but it’s best for upholstery thanks to the wide mophead attachments and corner scrub tools. It’s equipped with a 64-inch flexible steam hose and easy-stick microfiber pads to naturally clean hard and soft surfaces. Its 48-ounce water tank heats up in 8 minutes and then provides 45 minutes of continuous steam.

This machine proved to be the most powerful steam cleaner tested for this guide, and its steam-on-demand trigger with a continuous steam locking switch made it easy to control and direct the steam, especially when paired with the steam jet nozzle. This feature allowed us to aim the steam onto stubborn stains on mattresses and fabric-covered chairs. It even helped to break up old gum residue on an area rug. Too bad it does not allow the user to increase or decrease steam intensity.

This corded machine maneuvered smoothly, and we appreciated the integrated carrying handle that made bringing the machine up and down stairs easier. Though it stores away easily because of its low profile, this model does not come with an onboard cubby for the various accessories. This steam cleaner is perfect for keeping upholstery fresh and clean, and it’s suitable for cleaning floors and other hard surfaces as well.

The Bissell 2747A PowerFresh Vac & Steam is designed to cut down on cleaning time. This single tool vacuums and steams simultaneously, eliminating the need to tackle the same area with two machines. The cleaner features digital controls to select vacuuming mode or steaming mode, or both modes at the same time.

The microfiber soft pad and microfiber scrubby pad can handle a host of hard floor surfaces, the former ideal for cleaning laminate flooring and the latter for tile floors. Switching between the pads or taking them off for cleaning is easy with the detachable mop pad tray, which eliminates the need to flip the mop over to put on a clean pad. This product features dual tanks, one for dry debris from the vacuum and a wet tank to hold the water for the steam mop feature.

Although many multipurpose tools tend to excel in only one area, with mediocre performance in others, this Bissell worked extremely well as a vacuum and as a steam mop in testing. The vacuum mode sucked up pet hair and debris with ease, and it was super convenient to switch immediately to the steam mop mode to clean the floors without the need to stop and get another cleaning tool or mop. The vacuum mode and steam mop mode can be used separately or simultaneously. The only downside we found to dual mode is that the vacuum tank is small and will need to be emptied several times if cleaning a large area.

This product is designed to primarily clean hard surfaces, but the steam mop can refresh short-pile carpeting. Overall, we were most impressed with its performance for picking up small debris that got missed after sweeping hard surfaces—but we do think the price tag is a bit steep.

    Product Specs

    • Type: Upright
    • Water-tank capacity: 12.8 ounces
    • Weight: 9.74 pounds

    Pros

    • Vacuum and steam simultaneously or separately
    • Vacuum feature easily captures dirt and debris
    • Simple digital controls allow users to switch modes during use

While it’s true that the 48-ounce water tank on this heavy-duty McCulloch canister model can dispense hot steam for up to 45 minutes—enough time to clean large areas—it’s most impressive for the 18 attachments that make short work of stubborn stained spots on a variety of surfaces. The steam jet nozzle effectively loosened caked-on dirt in grout and greasy crevices in our oven. We particularly like the five utility brushes, including a brass brush, for removing rust and other debris from an outdoor grill. There’s also a 15.7-foot power cord and a 9-foot steam hose for reaching all the nooks and crannies where dirt can otherwise hide.

In testing, this steam cleaner took 8 minutes to heat up, proved easy to maneuver due to its low profile and large front wheels, and had plenty of steam to go the distance. However, there is no onboard location to wind the lengthy power cord—an unexpected flaw on an otherwise well-designed machine.

    Product Specs

    • Type: Canister
    • Water-tank capacity: 48 ounces
    • Weight: 9.95 pounds

    Pros

The Shark Genius steam mop is designed to work efficiently while minimizing physical effort. A large microfiber pad wraps around the top and bottom of the mophead, giving users double the cleaning capacity with one pad. When the bottom of the pad becomes dirty, the user can easily flip the mophead over to continue cleaning with the fresh side of the pad.

The steam cleaner also features three settings for customizing the steam level and a steam blaster to break down dried or sticky stains that can be a bane on tile, laminate, and other hard surfaces. Then, after the cleaning is done, the mophead opens with the push of a button to release the reusable dirty pad into the laundry without having to touch it—a terrific feature!

In testing on our tile floor, the thick microfiber pads easily picked up and held onto dirt and grime, even cleaning down into the grout. We also really like the ability to flip the mophead to use the other side of the pad. However, we would have appreciated on-demand steam control. And though we found the ergonomic circular handle comfortable to hold, we didn’t like that the mophead design prevented the steamer from standing upright on its own.

    Product Specs

    • Type: Upright
    • Water-tank capacity: 11.8 ounces
    • Weight: 5.77 pounds

    Pros

    • Double-sided dirt-gripping washable pads

As shocking as it may seem, carpet can contain 200,000 bacteria per square inch. Fortunately, the Dupray Neat Steam Cleaner can dispense steam as hot as 275 degrees Fahrenheit, a temperature capable of sterilizing surfaces and killing 99 percent of viruses and bacteria. The 54-ounce tank on this model allows for up to 50 minutes of continuous cleaning. Eighteen accessories, including a triangle tool, a crevice tool, and brushes for cleaning carpets and upholstery, are included.

In testing, this device maneuvered smoothly and produced powerful steam that effectively cleaned hard and soft surfaces. Although the steamer can help loosen dirt and grime, some manual scrubbing is necessary for tough stains with the triangular steam head and microfiber bonnet attachment. Though most steam cleaners in this category feature a cylinder shape, Dupray’s cube shape makes it easier to store in small spaces. The machine features a built-in funnel for filling the tank and a cord wrap to wind the 16-foot cord into the unit’s base. Although these features make the device easy to store, we would have loved onboard storage for the accessories.

    Product Specs

The PurSteam mop steam cleaner is also an excellent pick because of its versatility as an upright or handheld steam cleaner at an affordable price. Also consider the Shark steam cleaner that makes cleaning tile and other hard surfaces easy with its dirt-gripping mophead and touchless pad release.

How We Tested the Best Steam Cleaners

We tested each steam cleaner according to established rubrics that included water-tank capacity, weight, portability, accessories, and cleaning performance on hard and soft surfaces. We rated each steam cleaner based on these rubrics on a scale between 0 and 4 to determine their score.

We first determined how much assembly was required for each model and also looked into the ease of storing its cords and accessories. Next, we added the required amount of water and tested to see how easy it was to move and maneuver. We tested the steam cleaners on engineered flooring, tile, upholstered furniture, windowsills, porcelain, and carpet. We used the various accessories to determine how easy they were to attach and how well they functioned.

    FAQs

The following answers to some of the most frequently asked questions may help shoppers further in the selection of the best steam cleaner.

    Q. Should you put hot or cold water in a steam cleaner?

Put cold water into a steam cleaner to prevent injury. The machine will safely heat the water to the temperature needed to produce hot steam.

    Q. How long does it take to steam-clean?

The amount of time it takes to steam-clean varies based on the size of the surface and the degree of dirt and stains to be removed. Removing a spot from a couch, for example, will take significantly less time than steam cleaning an entire room’s carpet.

    Q. Does steam cleaning kill bed bugs?

Yes, steam cleaning can kill bed bugs. The surface temperature of the mattress or bedding must reach between 160 and 180 degrees Fahrenheit in order for the bed bugs and their eggs to be killed.

    Q. Does steam cleaning kill mold spores?

Yes, steam cleaning can kill mold spores. The high temperatures will kill the spores, and the steam will be able to penetrate through cracks to kill mold in harder-to-reach areas.

    Q. Does steam cleaning kill bacteria?

When its temperature is high enough, steam can effectively kill bacteria. The steam needs to be at least 175 degrees Fahrenheit to kill bacteria, but higher temperatures are even more effective.

    Buyer’s Guide

To choose the steam mop that works best for your cleaning needs, it’s important to consider heat time, maneuverability, and more. Read below for information that can help you make an informed purchase.

    Flooring

Look for a steam mop that can clean tile, hardwood, and the other materials that the floors around your home are made from. If you purchase a steam mop that only works with one type of flooring, it’s going to require several machines to get all of your floors clean.

    Maneuverability

A lightweight steam mop is easier to push around and carry from room to room. However, it likely has a smaller water tank that requires more frequent refills. Another element that affects maneuverability is the mop’s head. A swiveling head can clean corners and other hard-to-reach spots.

    Heat Time

Heat time measures how long it takes the water in a steam mop’s tank to heat to 212 degrees Fahrenheit and turn to steam. This time frame depends on the size of the water tank and the power of the steam mop. Most mops preheat in under a minute, but heavy-duty cleaners can take 10–15 minutes.

    Steam Strength

Flow rate measures how strong the stream of water vapor from a steam mop is. The higher the flow rate, the more powerful the stream. A low level of steam should be sufficient for dust. If you have stains or other stuck-on grime, you need a higher steam level. For versatility, you can find a steam mop with multiple steam settings.

    Water Tank

The water tank in your steam mop should be big enough to get the job done without stopping for refills but not so large that it’s difficult to maneuver or carry. Most steam mops hold around 15 ounces of water. To monitor the water level while you’re cleaning, look for a transparent tank.

    Accessories

Most steam mops are sold with accessories. Common accessories include:

    • Reusable pads
    • Scrubbers
    • Scent discs
    • Jet nozzles

    How a Steam Mop Works

Steam mops turn water into water vapor by heating it to 212 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the temperature at which the liquid turns to gas. When the water is boiled and pressurized inside of a sealed chamber, it releases a forceful stream of steam that loosens stains. In addition to targeting grime, the steam from steam mops also disinfects surfaces. The steam is hot enough to kill any bacteria that are living on your floors.

How To Use a Steam Mop

To make cleaning your floors with a steam mop easy and efficient, follow these basic guidelines.

    Check for proper assembly

Before you begin cleaning, make sure that all of your mop’s components are working properly.

    Use the right water

It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s recommendation regarding the type of water to use in your steam mop. Most steam mops work best with distilled water because it’s free of minerals that can clog the unit.

    Let the mop preheat

Wait for your mop to produce steam before you use it. Once it’s preheated, start using it immediately, as letting it sit for too long in one spot can cause heat damage.

    Prepare the floor

Sweep or vacuum your floor prior to mopping it. Otherwise, you’ll just move the dust around.

    Do a spot test

Before using your mop for the first time, test it on an inconspicuous spot, such as under your couch. This is especially important if you have floors that are sensitive to moisture and heat. Set the steam to the lowest level, then lightly press the mop down on the concealed area to see how it responds.

    Move the mop slowly

Push the mop forward to cover your floor in steam, then pull it back to get the pad to pick up any leftover dirt. Do this slowly over every square inch of your floor.

    Change the mop pad

Don’t let the pad get soaked in steam, as this can cause streaks. It’s helpful to have at least one extra pad on hand in case you need to change it in the middle of your cleaning session.

    Maintain the mop

After using your mop, you can’t just put it back in your closet. Follow the below tips to get it ready for storage.

    • Drain the water tank.
    • Place the pad in the washing machine.
    • Wipe the mop with a dry cloth.
    • Store the mop in a cool, dry space inside your home.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of using a steam mop?

Here are some of the reasons homeowners choose a steam mop over a regular mop:

    • It kills bacteria.
    • It neutralizes dander, dust, and other allergens.
    • It cleans without chemicals that are harmful to your family and the environment.

Can steam mops damage hardwood floors?

Steam mops shouldn’t damage a sealed hardwood floor unless this flooring has been weakened by constant contact to direct sunlight. If your floor is in sunlight, try the steam mop on an inconspicuous spot before using it to clean the entire surface. You shouldn’t use steam mops on unsealed hardwood floors at all because moisture can seep into their cracks.

What types of floors do steam mops work best on?

Steam mops work on a variety of surfaces, including:

    • Sealed hardwood
    • Vinyl
    • Ceramic
    • Marble
    • Porcelain

What materials aren’t safe to clean with steam?

You shouldn’t use a steam mop on polished or waxed floors because it could dull their shine. Steam isn’t safe on leather, velvet, or silk either.

ranking of the top 20 best steam mops according to KP with prices, reviews, photos and videos

Home cleaning is an important matter, but you don’t always want to spend a lot of time on this process. A special tool – a steam mop – will help to facilitate the “apartment subbotnik”.

The purpose of this appliance is to make cleaning easier. Technically, it is a symbiosis of a traditional mop and a steam cleaner. Steam, which is supplied from special holes, softens the dirt, and a microfiber cloth easily removes it.

You can wash everything with this device: ceramics, tiles, floors, marble and carpets. The mop also improves the quality of disinfection – at high steam temperatures, it cleans surfaces from germs and parasites. And to make the device convenient to use, it is advisable to choose models weighing no more than 3 kg.

There are two types of steam mops:

    Traditional Powered by water and designed for wet cleaning. A steam generator with a water tank is built into the body of such models, and for operation it is connected to the mains. Under the influence of heating, the water turns into steam, which escapes through the holes in the sole. The cloth attached to it absorbs moisture and effectively removes dirt. When using this type, you should take care of dry cleaning in advance;
Combination These are steam mops with a built-in vacuum cleaner or a rotating electric broom in the soleplate. With this device, you can carry out both wet and dry cleaning. The vacuum cleaner and the electric broom can be switched on separately or together with the steam generator.

Our rating is based on customer reviews and ratings posted in various sources on the Internet. Together with the experts, we will tell you about the best steam mops of 2022.

    Disinfects, cleans well

    Flimsy handle

How to choose a steam mop

Before making such a purchase, you need to know its main features. How to choose a steam mop, housewife Elena Vasina told .

    Functionality

Flexible models are always better than static ones. It is better to buy a mop with a movable head and a triangular shape, then you can get into even the most inaccessible places. The presence of a variety of nozzles in the kit will also help to cope with dirt in the corners.

    Weight

Heavy tools are difficult to work with. Therefore, it is recommended to buy a mop that weighs a little (preferably up to 3 – 3.5 kg). But it should be borne in mind that light weight is achieved through lightweight and non-impact-resistant construction materials.

    Material

Speaking of fragility, remember that if the main structure is made of plastic, then it may not be the most reliable. It is better to choose models with impact-resistant material, as well as metal and aluminum rods.

    Cloths

They are different, and not all of them perform their functions adequately. It is recommended to choose cloths with microfiber nozzles – they collect water best and do not leave streaks.

    Mop height

It is better to choose the height of the mop according to your height, as most often the handle is not adjustable. It is not recommended to take devices that are too large, as they are more difficult to use during cleaning.

    Continuous operation time

Also a very significant indicator. It depends on the speed of cleaning. It is desirable that the mop intensively supply steam for 25-30 minutes, so as not to take forced breaks during cleaning.

    Steam

The steam mop must have a convenient steam regulator and steam pressure of at least 1 bar. At lower rates, it will be difficult to cope with even minimal pollution.

    Power

Optimum steam mop power 1000W. If the power is lower, the device will heat up more slowly (more than 1 minute) and cope worse with cleaning surfaces. Also, the power can reach up to 2000 W, but such models are usually equipped with a large tank and heavy construction.

    Popular Questions and Answers

Tips on choosing a steam mop from Roman Borotkin, Morphy Richards Service Center Engineer.

What are the most important parameters of a steam mop?

The steam mop’s parameters reveal its pre-programmed functionality and ease of use.

    Mop power

Usually in the range from 1200 to 1700 W, this is the value consumed from the network, and it mainly affects the speed of heating water. In the worst case, you will have to wait up to 45 seconds (with power reaching the bottom bar).

    Vapor pressure

It determines the level of pollution difficulty that the device can overcome. It ranges from 1 to 3 bar, where 1 is light wet cleaning, and 3 is effective work with problem areas in the kitchen and bathroom, which were regularly used but less often cleaned.

    Steam boost

The intensity of the steam supply determines the cleaning speed and the time spent on each task. This parameter shows the amount of steam produced by the mop per minute and is in the range of 25-50 g/min. For a pleasant and easy care of the laminate, 25-30 g / min of steam is enough, while deep cleaning of the tile will require 35-50 g / min from the equipment. Adjusting the steam rate will be an added benefit.

    Water tank capacity

The water tank capacity determines how long the appliance can operate continuously without refilling and waiting time for the next warm-up. Varies from 350 to 500 ml. On the one hand, a more capacious tank is ideal for long-term cleaning, on the other hand, it noticeably makes the structure heavier, which has to be maneuvered and, probably, lifted.

    Autonomy

Battery life varies from 10 to 45 minutes. The average figure is about 20 minutes, but this is enough to clean rooms no more than 20m 2 .

    Accessories

The set of nozzles is an important story for those who are going to use the device not only for cleaning floors, but for everything else: windows, doors, kitchen appliances, sofas and carpets. The more attachments, the more cleaning options.

How to choose the right steam mop power?

Power influences the speed of heating processes inside the mop. For a full-fledged cleaning of the room, an average power of 1500 W is enough, while the heating time will be about 30 seconds.

Which is more effective: a steam mop or a steam cleaner?

The effectiveness of a steam mop versus a steam cleaner cannot be judged in favor of either device. Of course, steam cleaners are stronger in impact, more powerful and last longer thanks to a large water tank.

At the same time, being capable of a lot, they will be bulky and unclaimed in small apartments. A steam mop, with its compactness, can include the functions of a vacuum cleaner and a broom. In addition, the presence of rotating heads allows you to penetrate into hard-to-reach places.

Another advantage is the possibility of washing various vertical surfaces, such as windows.

What is the optimal run time for a steam mop?

Optimum steam mop run time is 20 minutes. It is important to understand that after the time has elapsed, cleaning stops exactly for the time of adding water and heating, which is no more than 3-5 minutes.
