With no shortage of room, the shelter is so big that there are maps dotted around the corridors so that residents don’t lose their way. Designed not only as a safety bunker to protect its inhabitants but also as a space to reconstruct society after a devastating catastrophe, the bunker is ready and waiting should a global disaster occur.

Why Backyard Bunkers Don’t Work

Many people ask us about having a personal shelter installed on their own property thinking that is better to have a basic shelter close to home, than a Vivos shelter miles away. There are many points to address when considering such a purchase. If you are considering a backyard shelter proceed with caution as most prefab and small family shelters will NOT survive the massive forces and threats that every Vivos shelter is built for. Worse yet, how will you defend it and keep your neighbors out.

Ask yourself the following questions before you invest in a ‘backyard shelter’.

What if you are not at home when disaster strikes?

(If you are not already at home when a catastrophic situation strikes, a backyard shelter is useless. The proverbial ‘20 minutes nuclear notice’ only works if you are home, awake, listening to either your television or radio, and the government has published an alert. Even the government knows that to survive with just a few minutes’ notice, you need to already be in the shelter. With such little time, getting to your shelter, locking it down and activating the systems is unlikely. You never know exactly where you will be when disaster strikes…at work, shopping, traveling, in traffic, at school, or even sleeping. The chances of being home, catching the alert broadcast, and getting to your shelter are very, very remote. Vivos is not for 20 minutes notice, but rather for a 1-day, week, or even months of advance notice that will allow you the time to travel to your Vivos shelter. Most events do provide some notice, even nuclear war as the rhetoric increases between nations, or worse yet, a nuclear device is exploded somewhere in the world. That is when it is time to head to your shelter.

Can you keep your backyard shelter a secret?

The answer is: NO. It is nearly impossible to keep the purchase, permitting, construction, and any camouflage a secret. Word always leaks out and someone will know. When the time comes, you will need to fight off your ‘friends’, neighbors and even relatives, all wanting access from a pending catastrophe, or worse yet, trying to break in after you’ve sealed the door. The location of every Vivos shelter is extremely secure and confidential, and known ONLY to fellow Co-Owners. However, while Vivos does not promote the exact location of each shelter, it does anticipate local awareness and crowd control. Every Vivos shelter is equipped with high-security barriers, fencing, devices and a security team that is ready, willing and very able to defend their complex. It will be virtually impossible for anyone to infiltrate a Vivos shelter complex. Unfortunately, a backyard home shelter does not include these security measures that are absolutely necessary for the ongoing integrity and success of any shelter.

How many well-armed and well-trained people will be with you in your shelter?

There is strength in numbers, and you will almost certainly be outnumbered by ‘outsiders.’ Following disaster, urban areas will be overcome with anarchy. Even if you survive the “event”, you will not be able to repel the desperate anarchists when they come looking for what you have. A backyard bunker is easily discovered, easily compromised and impossible to defend properly against roving gangs of scavengers, including your neighbors next door. Desperate people do desperate things. Approximately one-third of all Vivos Members have Military and/or Law Enforcement backgrounds. Along with several hundred other members in your Vivos community, the security measures, forces and devices that a Vivos facility incorporates ensures the defensible safety of yourself and your loved ones.

Is your shelter at least 10-feet underground and specifically designed to withstand ALL of these
threats?

You cannot build a TRULY “Secure Shelter” with appropriate NBC air filtration, power and water purification systems for multiple people in your backyard for less than the collective Vivos share price for each occupant. A typical backyard NBC “bomb shelter” costs $300K to $500K installed, plus additional expenses to fully equip it with food, fuel tanks and fuel, clothing, furniture, bedding, medicine, communications devices, etc. Most of backyard shelters are installed much less than 10-feet below the surface, and will not survive the natural and manmade forces that each Vivos facility is designed to withstand. Fiberglass and thin walled steeled structures DO NOT withstand the massive blast waves. Vivos hardened blast proof shelters do.

Is your shelter specifically designed for long-term underground habitation?

Underground survival takes extreme tolls on the human body, mind and spirit. You will not survive in something hardly bigger than a small shipping container, without space to move around, and a community of talented people with various backgrounds and expertise (physicians, laborers, artists, security, survivalists, etc.) to help you get through all of the physical and mental challenges. Being in a community of like-minded people with an abundance of supplies, amenities and ‘creature comforts’ is essential for your survival as well as your sanity. This type of diversified preparedness co-ownership shelter community, with ample space per person to exercise, move around, find privacy, and/or gather socially, is only currently available through Vivos.

Are you going to reside in the same home forever?

If you ever move, and your property is sold, you will not get any extra market value for a backyard shelter. You cannot take it with you, and you will have lost your entire ‘investment’. This has been a common complaint we hear from Vivos members. Some have even indicated that they built shelters at 3 or 4 consecutive homes and never recaptured any value when they sold their home. Your Vivos shelter will always be available for you, even if you move within the same regional area, and/or may be transferred (subject to availability) to the closest Vivos shelter to your new home area. With Vivos you never lose your investment and it will always have a market value should you wish to later sell it.

DIY Underground Bunker Plans

Most folks are quite capable of constructing things if they will put forth the time and effort into properly researching the subject matter.

Things to do Before Building an Underground Bunker

Permits

In building a DIY shelter, the first step in almost all areas is to obtain a permit for construction. You will also need to know where any pipes and utilities are buried before you can think about digging any holes.

The utility companies will generally provide you with this information at no cost. They often come to the site and mark the locations of their underground utilities for you if they are determined to exist within your construction zone.

Plans

You should draw up a set of plans to obtain the permit and for you to work from later. The recommended size of shelters and bunkers is 10 square feet of floor space for each person.

Many people are using buried shipping containers as DIY bunkers. However, if you are thinking the same, read this on why you shouldn’t bury a shipping container!

How to Build a Bunker

Most people will want to hire or rent heavy equipment for the digging work, but digging by hand is certainly an option. You’ll need to excavate the hole a bit bigger than the planned structure will be. That way you have room to work around it during construction.

Concrete is the strongest and most cost-effective material but others are possible as well. Steel is sometimes used instead of or in conjunction with concrete.

Wood is not generally a good choice due to decomposition. Treated wood will last longer but will constantly leak poison. Wood really doesn’t have the strength to safely support the dirt above and at the sides anyway.

While digging you may encounter obstacles such as boulders and underground water. Boulders can usually be removed by equipment or blasting. Underground water, on the other hand, is a problem that is difficult to deal with. It’s usually best to just dig somewhere else. The underground water discovery might be a nice potential source of drinking water later on, though.

Waterproofing your shelter should be a priority. You can do this by using plastic sheeting to keep water from invading the walls and ceiling from heavy rains and flooding.

If you don’t intend to build your DIY bunker underneath your house, it might be a good idea to think about making it difficult to locate by potential enemies and busybodies.

There are ways to hide it and soundproof it which will make the occupants more secure. Some people plant trees and bushes at the location including at the entrance to make it less conspicuous.

Taking advantage of, or creating, advantageous landscaping can provide cover for the DIY bunker.

Prepping & Survival Supplies on a Budget: Embrace your Inner DIYer

Your major priority in any survival situation will be water and survival equipment. If it is possible to construct a self-contained water system within the structure that is the best option. At worst, familiarize yourself with the best water purification methods.

Rainwater collection and groundwater purification are great ideas whenever possible. Otherwise, you will need to store enough water for the duration of the bug-in scenario.

Food needs to be planned for and stored properly for long-term usability. There are many options for food such as freeze-dried, canned, etc. This food should be rotated before its expiration date to keep from wasting it.

Ventilation is important to plan for. A second entrance is a good idea so that you have an additional exit in case something blocks the main entrance.

Other bunker supplies such as medical, sanitation, security, and even entertainment are essential if you want to last more than a day or two.

It’s probably a good idea to hire an electrician to run electricity into your DIY bunker if you need it.

Generators and other off-grid methods are also popular with survivalists. 12 volt systems are popular and safe to work with for the DIYer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to build a DIY underground bunker?

It’s possible to DIY a small backyard underground bunker for less than $1,000, but don’t plan on staying longer than 24 hours or being comfortable, for that matter. If you intend to ride it out for several days or longer, plan on spending at least $25,000.

How much does it cost to buy and install a ready made bunker?

Plan on spending between $5-10,000 for a limited stay budget bunker (not installed) and over $1,000,000 for a luxury bunker.

How big should my bunker be?

Ideally, you will want 10 sq ft of floor space per person for extended stays.

What basic preparations do I need to take before building an underground bunker?

Get a permit, draw up plans, rent heavy digging equipment (if you can), determine what the bunker foundation will be made of (concrete, steel, wood, etc) and plan for what supplies you will need.

Should I DIY or buy my underground bunker?

This is a question of time vs money, i. e. would you prefer to save money and DIY or save time and have someone else build it? A DIY bunker is a considerable time investment.

‘I Built an Underground Bunker and a Secret Tunnel’

Growing up, I lived next door to a quarry with areas that were not used and could be played in. There were always wooden barrels and pallets that would be tipped into one particular hole there, so as I got older, my friends and I would make underground dens out of them. It was amazing.

We used to dig a hole in the clay ground and then we’d get pallets, cover the top of the hole with them and heap the mud we’d dug out over the top. Nine times out of 10, by the time we’d built it more people would become interested; some big boys might come along and bash it up, or they’d get excited by it, take it over and make it bigger. But one we built had two rooms; we dug two holes and connected them together with a little tunnel.

I’m quite practical and I just started messing around building stuff in my spare time. When my dad was alive, he used to have a big shed in our house in Stamford, England, which I was never really allowed to use, so there was a lot I had to try and do in my bedroom. I had a lathe machine in my room at one point, which was madness. I then became a plumber and when my dad passed away, I inherited his shed. That happened to be around the time YouTube started so I signed up in November 2006. I rode BMX bikes at the time and I used to make silly videos, so I took bits of those videos and uploaded them, and they started doing quite well. Then, I began making stuff in my dad’s old shed and filming that too.

Some of my early videos were a bit comedy sketch-esque. Once, I got a caravan—what the British call trailers—cut a hole in the side of it and made it into a burger truck. I have a couple of friends who help me, Tom Lamb and Rick Sampson, and together we made a video of me serving people while we were driving. Of course, as soon as you get a plate of food and put it out the window, the whole lot flies away.

Colin Furze has been sharing his unusual inventions and projects on YouTube since 2006.
Colin Furze

But the first really massive thing I built was a wooden “wall of death”—a wooden cylinder that I could ride my BMX in—made of a wall of pallets. I filmed that build from start to finish at the age of 26. Soon after, I had a plumbing customer who had given me a motor from a boat, so I tried to put that on my back and have floats on my feet so I was like a human speed boat. It wasn’t fast at all and I’d never recommend people try my inventions at home!

Building the underground bunker

I had wanted to build an underground bunker for years. The little underground dens I had built as a child were so cool and I loved the idea of having a bunker that was built properly. It ended up being paid for in 2015 as part of a program by British broadcaster Sky about the apocalypse. I always say that what I have done in my backyard is the adult version of what I did as a kid, but with a budget.

When it came to the actual design, I drew a square on the lawn, looked at it and thought it wasn’t big enough, so I drew a slightly bigger one. When we dug the hole out, I remember saying: “S***, this is really big!”

The hole was about 11.5ft deep, and the bunker is a bit smaller because there is concrete that surrounds it all. Building it was fairly simple; we just dug a massive hole with a digger. That part only took two days. Then we built a metal box inside and surrounded it with concrete. Of course, that was a lot of work because the metal structure was fabricated and welded together, but the process itself was simple. It took two months in total; six weeks of building and then about two weeks of sorting the yard out and the interior of the bunker.

When we first started building it, people asked why I didn’t have a ladder dropping into the corner of the bunker itself. My answer was: that would be boring. I knew I wanted a bit of a tunnel leading into it, so you go into a shed at the bottom of the yard and there’s a hatch you lift up on the floor. From there, you climb down a ladder and into the bunker via a short tunnel.

People also suggested building the bunker from shipping containers, but I thought that would make a dull room with a flat ceiling, which wasn’t the effect I was looking for. I wanted an arched ceiling so it does feel like you are underground, in a subway station or something.

The underground bunker is 24ft long, 16ft wide and 8ft high at the center. It’s currently kitted out with a couch, a TV, a drum kit and it has a sink. I also store some of my inventions down there—including an “ejector bed”, a turkey cooking machine and a flame-throwing guitar—so it’s a bit of a “Colin museum” at the moment. I now watch all the Formula 1 racing down there and Rick has his band practice in the bunker because you can make a lot of noise and no one hears it.

Because of what’s currently happening in the world, there is an added interest in the bunker. It probably wouldn’t be nuclear proof, because you need certain air filtration systems, but if we did get attacked, I’d rather my family and I were sat in there with two feet of concrete above our heads, than in our house. But I wouldn’t say I’m a prepper, it was mostly built for the coolness of doing it.

The secret tunnel

By the end of 2015 we had a bunker at the bottom of the yard, and I began to think that it would be good to be able to get to it from the house via a secret tunnel. The idea was left on the backburner for a while, but I always say that the best way to do any project is to make a start, so in 2018, I chopped the floor out of another shed we have in the yard and put a hatch in that went nowhere. Then in November that year, I started working on digging down.

Creating the tunnel was a little bit trickier than the bunker, because we were digging in a shed and winching the soil and rock out of a hole. I only used to do it when my neighbors were on vacation, because I had to use a jackhammer. You can’t be jackhammering away while they’re there!

It was about a foot from the depth it needed to be and then of course, COVID hit, and my neighbors never went on vacation. So in 2020, nothing happened; it was just a dormant hole. At the beginning of 2021, I was fed up and wanted to get on. One day, our neighbors went to the grocery store, so I got the jackhammer down there and broke up the last bit of rock.

Once we started digging the sideways part of the tunnel, we were able to do it in relative silence using a hydraulic digger to move the dirt and rock, and then lift that out in buckets. Once you start digging sideways you do need to shore up the walls and ground above you. From March to May 2021 we dug about halfway to the house, shoring up the tunnel along the way. We had breaks and then in early March 2022, we finally got connected to the house. The entrance inside is in a cupboard off my kitchen, you open a hatch, climb down and can walk through the 12ft-long tunnel. I’m 178cm tall and the tunnel height is somewhere between 185cm to 190cm.

It started three years ago and took a full year of work to complete, but it’s been one of the most enjoyable projects we’ve ever done. There’s something about the simplicity of it. The tunnel is currently between a shed and the house, and I would estimate it’s double the distance again to get from that shed to the bunker, so we do have more work to do. We’ll probably dig that tunnel from above, because I can get a large digger in.

I am now thinking about putting another bunker in the backyard and having it as some kind of workshop, because there is room. When we dug the hole for the original bunker, Tom did suggest digging up the whole backyard; I probably should have just done that!

I’m not sure that my kids think they have the most amazing life, because the bunker has been there since they were old enough to be aware of it. But now they’re getting a bit older, I think they’re realizing that not everyone has bunkers in their backyard. They also really like the secret tunnel because it’s like a circuit; they can go out to the shed, go down into the tunnel and come back into the house, playing hide and seek and shouting at each other!

I’ve slowed down a little bit now because you get burned out on the internet; it’s easy to get sucked into the machine of having to produce lots of content. It takes a lot of effort to build an audience and at some point you have to let it plateau a bit or you’d probably go nuts. I’m 42 now, so it also takes me a lot longer to build stuff than it used to!

Tom, Rick and I are making a hot tub at the moment. That’s my next project; I’ve been doing a lot of digging and I have an achy back so I need a hot tub to relax in. But with energy prices at the moment a hot tub is luxury, so we’re making a wood-fired one. We have a massive vessel that we’ve dragged out of a scrap yard, it looks like it’s full of germs at the moment—but we’ll clean it up and I’ll add copper around it so it has more of a steampunk look.

When your hobby becomes your job, you can always feel like you’re at work, or, you can feel like you’re never at work. It just depends on how you look at it. But if you’re doing something fun, it doesn’t really matter. I think I’m just going to end up going slower and slower and slower; I don’t think I’ll ever actually retire.

Brian Laundrie

People are wondering if Brian Laundrie is hiding in a bunker in his own backyard (Twitter)

After a photo of Brian Laundrie’s father pointing at a drone above his house went viral, internet sleuths went to work, zooming into the picture and picking apart the tiniest details in the snap. That is when some of them noticed what looked like a white-colored pit in their backyard, leading some people to believe that deceased vlogger Gabby Petito’s boyfriend, who has been missing and named the person of interest in the case, might be hiding in his own home.

The Laundrie house has been under scrutiny ever since their son went missing after Gabby Petito’s body was found and the death was ruled a homicide. The photo widely shared on Twitter showed Christopher ‘Chris’ Laundrie as well as his wife Roberta Laundrie, who are the residents of Wabasso Avenue in North Port, Florida, outside their house. The 62-year-old was seen pointing towards the sky while Brian’s mother faced him.

Brian and Petito had been on a cross-country trip in a converted van that began in July. But on September 1, Brian returned alone to his Florida home while driving the van. At the time, he did not tell anyone about the 22-year-old woman’s whereabouts. Even after Petito was reported missing by her family on September 11, he did not talk to the authorities, and a day before he was named the person of interest in the case, he went missing.

‘#BrianLaundrie might be in their backyard’

Soon others wondering the same thing joined in the conversation. While some of them did not think it was an underground survival bunker, others were convinced that Brian was hiding out in his own backyard, while the authorities are busy scanning the Carlton Reserve in Florida and following up on other tip-offs and possible sightings across the country. “I think he’s hiding in a bunker too or an attic maybe the grandparents. I’d check all his family and friends out cuz they guilty of harboring Brian Dirty Laundrie,” one of them wrote, while another commented, “Yea- Tube Crime I want to know too. British Man Builds Secret Backyard Bunker Completely Invisible To The Naked Eye – Green Living Tribe

Every man wants a man cave, even if he doesn’t have one. The basement or garage often become a man cave. A place for men to hang out, and give the ladies their space. This gives men a place to bond with the boys and talk about things like sports, finance, business and of course.. the women they just escaped!

Many men end up making their man cave the basement or the garage, but this is nothing special and nothing exciting or inspiring. Today we’re highlighting a man who build a backyard bunker. Colin Furze, a 42 year old man from Stamford, Lincolnshire, England has created quite the cool backyard bunker built in 2015.

When you enter his backyard all you see is grass and you wouldn’t suspect anything to be extraordinary until you see this beautiful shed in his backyard and enter in..

It’s a very nice shed, it looks like it could be a tiny home or something a bit nicer than a simple shed that stores tools. Turns out, this shed won the ‘shed of the year’ in 2017. Apparently there are competitions for the nicest built shed, and this one won! But that’s just the beginning of the story, it gets far more James Bond-esque than that.

When you enter the shed all you see is a nicely furnished shed. However, there’s a rug on the floor and when you pull up that rug there is a hatch that goes underground as shown here:

Once you go down about 15 feet you enter a corridor, and this underground hallway leads to the full bunker area. Once you enter the bunker through the corridor you enter an open room that is shaped almost like a small airplane hanger.

The room is 24 feet long by 16 feet wide with 8 foot tall ceilings. Making it 384 square feet. About half the size of the average NYC apartment.

This room contains a small bed, a sink, a television and couch, a drum set and guitar area for jamming out, unique colorful lighting. A place for Colin and his buddies to hang out, jam out, watch tv and just generally have a good time. The benefit of the underground bunker is that they can jam out as loud as they want on the guitar and drum set and no one will hear them!

That underground bunker really does allow you to birth your musical madness to life without any side eyes. In fact, Colin enjoys jamming out so much that he got a ‘flame throwing metal guitar’ and quite literally plays while fire shoots out and chars the metal ceiling of the bunker. He can do this because the metal ceiling will not catch fire. An underground bunker with flame throwing guitars, Colin has realized his dream of being in Metallica clearly! You can see Colin jamming out in his bunker here:

Talk about wicked awesome, as they say in Britain. Colin goes on to describe that he can make all the noise that he’d like down here. He plays his fire metal guitar. He blew a drone up, and even shot off fireworks down there. There are marks on the wall from the damage but the bunker is metal so there is no fire hazard in that sense. What a playground for a pyro like this man!

This bunker is the ultimate band practice and ‘blow sh## up’ room. He also has an ‘ejector bed’ that launches you, like the movies. A thermite launcher, don’t ask me what that is. Along with assassins creed grappling hooks, wolverine claws, running built of knives, a fire throwing rocket launcher, a flame throwing guitar, wrist mounted flame throwers, magnetic shoes, turkey cooking machine, wrist mounted hydraulic jaws, hydraulic scissor shoes.

Long story short. Anything that produces a flame on demand and that is sharp, Colin probably has in his bunker. When I started writing this story I pictured a man cave. Then it became a James Bond Bunker.. and then it morphed into the Punisher and the man cave and James Bond are nowhere to be found anymore.

Watch The Tour Of The Secret British Bunker Here:

The bunker has it’s own ventilation so it never stinks and always smells fresh. Colin adds “I wouldn’t make it any differently if I was going to do it again”

Colin has food, water and toilet paper in the bunker. He has slept down there a few times during a few heatwaves in Britain, but he would not want to live down there because there’s no windows. He adds “Will it ever flood? No, I live on top of a hill, so if this place floods or fills with water a lot of other people will drown.”

At some point he’d like to extend it and add a bathroom and gas wood fire.

Furze also adds that he has multiple world records with this bunker. But will the real estate agent be able to sell it once he’s done with his bunker punisher phase? I’ll tell you one thing’s for sure. If a family buys this property I’m quite sure they’ll want all sharp and flame throwing objects cleared from the bunker before they move in.

Colin created and posted a video of how the ‘Apocalyptic Bunker’ was made here:

What do you think? Was it smart to create a metal bunker? Non-flammable and quite zombie proof! How would you create your bunker differently?

How to build a do-it-yourself bunker in the backyard

Your own nuclear shelter made of reinforced concrete structures, with communications, ventilation and filtration systems, emergency exits, a weapons depot and supplies of provisions and medicines for 10 years – this is a cool dream, but almost impossible. It is much more realistic to build a bunker in the backyard of your own house. Without attracting too much attention and investing in the construction of a minimum of funds and effort, you can achieve a fairly good result. Of course, for your purposes.

The author of this article, James Walton, shares his personal experience with building a simple bunker.

Installing a real steel bunker, even in the simplest configuration, will cost you a very decent amount. But I believe that any sane person, having such a sum of money, will spend it on more useful and necessary things. Yes, even buying land for such a bunker is already a serious investment for most of our like-minded people.

Plus the basic equipment is the minimum you are unlikely to be satisfied with. Yes, it will be possible to take shelter in it after hearing a storm warning and survive the hurricane quite successfully, but this is clearly not the “personal survival base” that you dreamed of.

But you can, for example, build a fairly simple bunker with your own hands – and it will be quite effective both for protection against natural disasters and as a place to store valuable supplies, tools and materials. And now I will tell you about my experience of building such a shelter.

Soil bags

These are the ones you have to start with. This is a relatively modern building material that allows you to build fairly durable ground and, most importantly, underground structures. Plus, it’s cheap and easy to use. With its help, for example, you can build a primitive, but quite reliable sheltered basement.

Making bags of earth is an extremely simple but tedious process. You simply pour the material into the container until it stops and transport it to the place you need. Some fasten such bags with barbed wire, others lay layers with additional lumber. However, all this is not necessary. Soil bags alone are enough to build a bunker in the simplest version. Also because, for example, this “building material” is almost not subject to the negative effects of moisture.

Due to the minimum material requirements, a bagged silo will be significantly less expensive than a metal and reinforced concrete silo. Several orders of magnitude cheaper. But what will be your task?

How to build a bunker

1. Purpose of the bunker

Before you fill the first bag with soil, you need to sit down and think about why, in fact, you need a bunker. And the answers to this question can be very different, because a shelter in which you can wait out a hurricane will be very different in design from one in which you can survive a nuclear war. So you have to sit down – and sketch out a rough design for the structure. Consider all the points that may be important to you. And, of course, try to make it as strong as possible, for example, by using domed or round structures. Remember, a well-thought-out plan is the key to the success of the whole business.

2. Digging a hole

At the planning stage, you should already estimate the depth of your shelter and its location in relation to the terrain. So, now you have to dig a hole for your project. And if you don’t have your own excavator, get ready to suffer. Yes, this is the most difficult and tedious part of the job.

3. Walls and ceiling

If you are building a full-fledged covered bunker, then it makes sense to additionally strengthen it with wood from the inside. This is especially true if your shelter has a flat ceiling – something should hold the bags of earth in this position. For example, a simple wooden frame and the same pallets. They are enough not to worry about the ceiling falling on your head.

If you’re making a dome, you don’t need an extra roof frame – stacking the bags in concentric tapering circles will suffice (but we’d still recommend some sort of central support – just in case).

What do you need? Lots of bags, more dirt, and barbed wire to hold the whole thing together.

4. Entry and exit

You also need to plan separate entrances and exits (maybe several) to make it easier to get into the shelter, and if necessary, quickly leave through a safe escape route. Fortunately, bags of earth will come in handy here too – for example, you can make steps for a solid staircase to your bunker. But with the doors you have to get out – here you can’t do with bags. In any case, a creative approach will help solve this problem.

5. Construction

The hardest and most tiring stage is filling the bags with earth. The best thing is to lay out the bags near the heap of earth that you managed to sketch while digging the hole, and start filling them methodically. It is better to do this in the company of comrades – it will be faster. You don’t need to particularly fool around with closing the bags – twist the upper part around its axis and pierce through with a long nail.

An alternative is a layer of old tires. They can also be used as an additional outer layer – in front of the bags. But you can do without them.

Continue layering the bags by tying them together with barbed wire. This will give you walls and even a roof.

6. Finishing and masking

When the walls and roof of the bunker are ready, you need to sprinkle them on top with the remaining earth. But remember that the structure may not withstand the “mountain from above”, so you don’t need to impose a very thick layer of earth. How deep to dig? Depends on the task and the characteristics of the soil.

Now you need to somehow cover the place where the bunker is located, as well as the approaches to it. The best option is a thorny ornamental shrub, trimmed so as not to interfere too much. Or – ordinary thick grass, tall weeds and other natural features of the landscape.

Also at the planning stage, it is necessary to think over the ways of supplying electricity and water. This will be helpful if you are considering your new shelter in terms of long term survival and active exploitation.

In conclusion

What can be added. It is unlikely that local authorities will allow you to build unauthorized construction in the urban area under their control – you will have to obtain permission and coordinate it. It is unlikely (or rather, not at all) that such a makeshift bunker will actually protect you when atomic bombs fall on your heads. It is unlikely that it will allow you to hold out during a severe flood (if you do not strengthen the entrances and exits – this is how dams are actively made from bags of earth). It is unlikely that without a real strengthening of the roof and a proper ventilation system, you will be able to survive a really powerful hurricane or a large-scale forest fire in it.

But sandbags will stop a bullet, a thick layer of earth is a good barrier against ionizing radiation, and a hidden place that no one else knows about is extremely useful in itself. And as a warehouse for all sorts of useful crap, such a home-made bunker can be simply irreplaceable.

who builds such shelters in Ukraine

The fear of a nuclear war, which, after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation, has become more real than ever since the Caribbean crisis, makes people around the world to think about their safety. The demand for bomb shelters and bunkers has also grown in Ukraine. Shelter prices start at $1,000/sq. m. But for a full-fledged bunker for the whole family, which will allow you to wait out the nuclear winter, it will cost many times more.

Demand for bunkers skyrockets

American bunker manufacturer Atlas Survival Shelters has reported a sharp increase in the production of radiation shelters. Moreover, the company’s clients are not only Americans, but, oddly enough, Ukrainians as well. “No one now thinks that people who buy bomb shelters are crazy. We have good business in Ukraine and Poland because of the war. I have several Ukrainian clients. They are wealthy people and they want to get the bunker as soon as possible,” DW quotes the owner Ron Hubbard’s Atlas Survival Shelters. He also noted that due to the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine, the demand for products manufactured by their company has increased several times. At the same time, frequent customers are precisely those people who live in Eastern Europe. The cost of an American-made bunker starts at $40,000. The maximum price is $1 million. A standard anti-radiation bomb shelter has a height of 3 meters and a length of up to 12 meters. The shelter includes everything you need for a long stay in it. There is furniture in the rooms, a bathroom is equipped, there are tanks under the floor in which you can store water, food and numerous supplies. The ventilation system is additionally equipped with high quality filters that purify the air inside the hopper.

However, the bunker fever has consumed Europe as well. Chekhov, for example, the war in Ukraine scared so much that, in addition to bunkers, the population began to buy suitcases with things “in case of emergency” – with masks, special suits, dosimeters, sleeping bags and water filters, writes the Czech newspaper iDnes. Finland is reopening and testing bunkers left over from World War II. By the way, one of the bomb shelters is located directly under the residence of Santa Claus in Helsinki. And in Germany, even tax benefits were provided for buyers of bomb shelters. Citizens have the right to count on compensation from the treasury for the construction of shelters in gardens, private cottages and even in apartment buildings.

“Bunker in two weeks”

Domestic companies are also involved in the design and construction of bunkers. The Ukrainian segment of the Internet is simply replete with advertisements for bunkers and bomb shelters. There are even companies that promise to build a bunker in 10 days. “When the war began, demand went up. But it was there even before the war. The cost of designing in our company is $80-100 and more. The price of the project depends on the content and purpose,” Danica architectural and construction company told Vesti.ua.

The modern bunker is an underground building with a ventilation system, electricity and sewerage. If desired, you can connect the Internet there, install surveillance cameras and sensors to monitor the state of the environment. Air can be supplied from outside or circulated in a closed system with oxygen cylinders.

“The cost of the project is from $ 1000/sq. m. for a modest option for protection against shelling. A very large cost part is engineering. Everything is calculated based on the number of people who can be there at the same time. Also taken into account is the time during which people will be able to stay in the bunker without going outside,” the company says. The bunker must be buried at least four meters. The most common way: a pit breaks out, a sealed iron box is placed and then everything is poured with concrete.

“It all depends on what our clients want to defend against. Either from a missile attack, or from shelling, or from a nuclear explosion. Depending on this, different calculations are made. And when the designer calculates the architectural moments, he takes into account the required amount of materials , concrete, units, the number of fittings, etc. In addition, all equipment, generators, water, fuel, boilers, ventilation, and also, if we are talking about a nuclear explosion, also filters. just space money,” the company notes.

The greatest demand among Ukrainians today is for premises with an area of 50-300 sq. m. m. Moreover, it can be both a separate building underground and a basement in the house. “You can even build in the field, the main thing is that there is access to drill a well. We build mainly from concrete with a lot of reinforcement. The geography of orders is different. Except for Western Ukraine. Apparently, people feel safe there. part of the orders are Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Rovno. Moreover, such projects are ordered by both ordinary people who have land plots and organizations. The smallest room that we designed was 25 sq. m. to sit out shelling. But most often these are premises from 50 to 300 sq. m. As for the duration, so far we have had calculations for a maximum of two months,” the company said. Note that after a probable nuclear strike in the bunker, you will have to spend from 2 to 30 days, depending on the radioactive fallout.

Cafes instead of shelters

As for public shelters, as the first three months of the war showed, there are problems with them. And the point is not even in their deplorable state, but in the fact that many of them are used for other purposes and are inaccessible to citizens. It is not uncommon for old shelters to house art cafes, shooting galleries, restaurants or parking lots. “A serious problem, in particular in large cities, is that premises that are actually bomb shelters are privately owned or rented and used as shops, gyms or cafes. Often in such cases they are not ready for use as shelters,” – said the head of the Servant of the People party, Elena Shulyak. To resolve the issue, people’s deputies are now preparing changes to the Code of Civil Protection of Ukraine in order to ensure citizens’ access to shelters. The bill No. 7282, adopted by the Parliament, is also on the President’s signature. It provides that all new planning and development, including the restoration of what was destroyed during the war, will focus on security.

West Everett Estates Player Settlement

Description:
West Everett is a huge settlement, smaller than Spectacle Island, but the largest settlement I’ve seen so far.

More:
The mod turns the entire area of West Everett into a player’s settlement, in addition, there are now post-war houses in place of destroyed houses and empty lots. Turn West Everett into a complete community where you can assign people to different houses to make them feel like families living in a community.

In addition, there are two bomb shelters: the original one is “Backyard Bunker” and “McGovern’s Refuge”, both are great places to send your companions to keep them out of trouble, and the latter has its own workshop and can be used in as an inland settlement.

Absolutely everything here can be dismantled – garbage, houses, barricades, even totems and spikes of super mutants that were not dismantled before. Everything except the power pylons and the mailbox in front of the workshop. Don’t disassemble them with 3rd party mods or console. The power pylons are your generator for 100 units of energy, and the mailbox is used in the Underground quest.

You don’t have to clear the settlement to gain access to the Workshop (but the super mutants are still there and you still need to kill them).

How to build your own underground bunker

The enduring
doomsday threat as we know it, commonly known as
TEOTWAWKI, is growing day by day. Whether the world economy
collapse, environmental disaster, border race, nuclear disaster or
terrorism, the threats have never been greater.

The only way to fully protect yourself and your family is to be prepared for anything that might happen. We cannot hope that the authorities will intervene and save the situation. You cannot plan your way out of a disaster or collapse of civilization in your home – at least not for long. You must be prepared, which means you must consider providing an impenetrable and defensible shelter. It’s time to think about underground bunkers.

Build
Having an underground bunker in or near your house makes a lot of sense. There is a strong
chance that your family will already be reunited at home in the event of a
strike disaster or shortly thereafter. The family home should always be the place of residence and the
meeting point for emergencies. Having access to a
shelter near your home, whether under your house, in your backyard, or on your
property ensures that you can access it easily and quickly when things fall apart.

Underground bunker
– the most ideal place to escape from a natural disaster (except
flood, of course) or the collapse of society. You can build it to suit your
‘s personal specifications, and since it’s most likely to be near your home, you can ensure your
is always fully stocked. It’s also easy to hide because
won’t have many people in our backyard who know what you’re building. (For
all they know is a pool and a hut)

When you start planning your
underground bunker, it’s important to think about your
Needs. Here are a few things to consider:

  • How many people will be using your shelter?
  • What is
what is the purpose of your underground bunker? What do you want him to protect you from?
  • COMMENT
Would you like to spend a long time in the bunker?

If you are going to
to build an underground bunker, you must be sure that you are thinking of all of them
angles before launch, because after construction it will be difficult to
changer.

People who build underground bunkers build them for various reasons. Some people want to go somewhere if the government collapses and there is widespread panic and chaos. Other people want to avoid a natural disaster. Underground bunkers can also protect against nuclear fallout. In all these cases, the preparation and construction of the bunker is critical and must be planned well in advance so that the bunker does not fulfill its function.

Some basic
considerations include how many people you need to protect and how long you
need to stay in the bunker. If you plan on having a bunker,
shelter viable for 90 days, then there should be enough room for everyone
Your party plus a 90 day supply space. This space is
people inside, as well as a place to store food, which will determine the size of
your shelter should be.

You should consider having
water and air filtration system for your bunker. After all, you’ll be
underground and with no doors open, so the air needs to be filtered and you
need access to fresh water, even if you’ve kept bottled water for
while drinking. You will need to think about sanitation, including a shower area
and a bathroom of sorts. Even if you have a camping toilet, you will need
Eliminate Waste.

Next level of consideration requires
things are a little further. What do you want to protect yourself from? Is it a fallout shelter, a storm shelter, or is
even a panic-type bunker to keep people out? Obviously there are
different types of building techniques that need to be considered for each type of
bunker, with fallout shelter at the top of the list due to
any additional levels of protection needed to prevent penetration of
bunker radiation.

Up to
buildings, you need to think about the location of your bunker and the type of
land you are building on. If the land is dry, like a desert, you won’t have to worry about groundwater and possible flooding, but if you’re in a
location where there’s a lot of rain and snow, your
bunker will have to withstand the
elements to avoid flooding, rotting, and do not get moldy if the soil is too wet.

Before watching
how to build a bunker, let’s talk about sea containers as an easy way and
is a relatively inexpensive alternative to building a bunker from scratch.

Shipping container problem

While
researching the construction of an underground bunker, you may come across the idea of
using a shipping container as your bunker structure. Pretty idea
is simple – dig a massive hole, bury a container and install all the
essentials. In theory, this is a great idea, but there are potential issues to consider.

Storage and
shipping containers have become popular modular building materials. In reality,
Las Vegas has an entire
retail and restaurant complex outside of shipping containers. The enigmatic character Jadis had a very beautiful
Home Shipping Container in the middle of a junkyard in The Walking Dead. When
is to use shipping containers to build above ground, they are
a wonderful thing. Another problem is underground.

Dig
a massive hole is not a problem, and the base is easy to install
essentials, regardless of the type of construction used. But expedition
container has its limitations.

There is only one way
to get in and out, which can be a problem if you need to escape and your
entrance is blocked.

Another problem with
comes with the weight of dirt on the top of the container. Over time, the weight of
can cause the roof to sag or even collapse. If you are in an area with a lot of
rain, water can accumulate at the top and break the integrity of the roof
even faster. Depending on the location of your container, you need to think about
things like cars rolling over it or debris covering your driveway.

Speaking of rain, the outside of
shipping containers can be prone to rust, so you need to think about
soil moisture levels and how that might affect your container over time.
The mud of an arid desert would be better than the wet land of a prairie or forest if
you have an area. Erosion is a big problem, as are the
chemicals in the container paint. Many of these containers are used to transport
cargo across the ocean, so the exterior has been treated with chemicals.
You don’t want chemicals to get inside your container and
make your bin toxic.

In many cases, sea containers are excellent bunkers both above and below ground. The problem is they are not meant to be buried so some people have had issues and the last thing you want is to need your bunker only to find it is not viable because the roof is collapsing. Shipping containers are risky in this regard, but they are definitely better suited for ground use.

If you choose an offshore container type bunker, you should look for something that is heavily fortified, such as the bunkers built by Risings Bunkers.

Build your underground shelter

First step
To build your bunker, you need to determine the size you need, then you must
choose a place. Many people build their own bunkers, but if you’re getting fat, then hiring a contractor is the best solution.

Although many
people prefer to stay off the grid, you may have to revoke building permits
backyard bunker, especially if you use a contractor. Even if you build
deep in the forest it’s a good idea to do everything right so
people are not wrong. (After all, how many horror movies does
involve a guy with a torture den buried deep in the woods?) If you find yourself
revoking permits and you don’t want to, consider fortifying the basement of your
home and turning it into an almost underground secret bunker . It’s the best way to stay away
grid and keep attention to a minimum.

There are many videos and resources available to help you build your own underground bunker. This guy has a series of pretty entertaining videos:
Start with a set of plans that list size, shape, inlets/outlets, living space, food and supplies storage, air filtration systems, generators, and clean water supplies.

You have to make a hole big enough
and deep enough for the intended design. Pour the cement foundation and
then you start building your structure. Cement, bricks or blocks
are the cheapest and most durable materials. Sheet metal is expensive, but the most
is ideal because it will last the longest with the least complications. Drink
is not recommended as any moisture in the soil will cause deterioration.

Once your
bunker is built, it must be hidden. Plant plants on it or leave
water to a minimum, consider building an arbor so that nothing indicates
that a building is hiding below. If your bunker is in the woods, then you can use
plants to cover the door, and if they are away from your
line of sight, make sure no one can touch it. The security system is a good
idea to let you know when someone is trying to get in.

Building an underground bunker will help keep you and your family safe at the end
the world is knocking.
