The Georgia Aquarium is the only institution outside of Asia to house whale sharks. The sharks are kept in a gigantic 24 million liter (6.3 million gallon) tank in the Ocean Voyager exhibit. There has been controversy surrounding the decision of the Georgia Aquarium to house whale sharks. Concerns about keeping the whale sharks in captivity were heightened by the deaths of two of the whale sharks originally obtained.

Israel’s own Aquaman? Meet the CEO who built a home aquarium large enough to swim in

HAIFA, Israel — If it’s possible to make news quietly, then that’s what Israeli entrepreneur Eli Fruchter did earlier this year when his company, EZ Chip (who, for the last 15 years have been supplying with similar quietude an ethernet technology ubiquitous the world over) was acquired for over $800 million.

The understated media attention was well-suited to Fruchter, who is soft-spoken, deliberate and deceivingly humble.

No such luck this August, however, when the internet got wind of a YouTube video he uploaded showing off the 37,000 liter (10,000 gallons, including the filtration system) home reef aquarium in his living room — large enough for him to get inside and swim among the fish.

It is the second clip he’s posted showcasing his amazing project. Within days the video racked up a stunning 250,000 hits and news outlets from Ireland to India called to speak with him. The erstwhile CEO was even covered by Israeli pop culture show HaZinor.

After paying a visit to Fruchter’s Haifa home, The Times of Israel can attest: The aquarium is certainly newsworthy.

Over 150 colorful fish of 30 different species glide and flit through the mammoth tank, while a rainbow of corals bob lightly back and forth on waves of alternating current produced by the filtration system. The currents are just one of many factors designed to replicate the reef’s natural environment, producing a facsimile realistic enough to allow the aquarium’s first resident to grow to a size normally only achieved in the wild.

Many of the aquarium’s over 30 species are growing to sizes they would normally only achieve in the wild. (Miriam Nahum/Times of Israel)

“Most of these fish are called Tangs,” — a saltwater variety common among home enthusiasts — Fruchter tells The Times of Israel. “They are mostly vegetarian, but on the base of their tail, they have knives — real knives, sharp ones. And they use these knives to attack, and also to defend themselves.” Also among the biodiversity swim several specimens with a prominent elongated proboscis, the aptly-named Unicorn fish.

Each week, Fruchter drives a specially equipped golf cart a few minutes from his home to the Mediterranean Sea, to replenish 1,000 liters of the tank’s contents with fresh seawater.

“The corals especially must have water that’s completely clean, and that’s very hard to get in a closed system,” he says. “Most public aquariums are located near the ocean, and they just pump in clean water.”

“It requires a lot of maintenance,” he adds. “A reef aquarium of this size you usually just find in places where they have a full-time staff.”

Newly retired — though still dispensing advice and working part time on the board of Nova, another Israeli hi-tech company — Fruchter, 63, has a little more free time these days to dedicate to his marine hobby.

Unsurprising for an Israeli hi-tech CEO, he has programmed many functions such as feeding, temperature, and the retractable sunroof to be controlled via an app on his phone.

While that’s impressive, what’s truly stunning is Fruchter’s elaborate filtration system. Located one floor directly below the aquarium, the system can be found behind thick metal double-doors.

Manage to pry the doors open, and the smell of seawater hits the nostrils just as the cacophonous grind of the three powerful pumps envelops. The noise inhibits conversation but encourages wordless exploration into the room, which houses the guts of the aquarium. There, amid the hum of the machinery and winding PVC pipe, lie several smaller tanks — although still large enough to be proudly showcased in a more standard living room.

In one such tank, several young shrimp are gradually acclimating to future conditions in the main aquarium.

“I have to see that they are doing well, the new ones,” Fruchter says, leaning over and looking down his glasses at them.

Designed by Fruchter himself, the filter uniquely relies on gravity caused by falling water to create a heady foam from the impurities. The foam is then skimmed off the top by a revolving paddle, leaving the clean water to be pumped into a series of reservoirs before being returned to the main tank.

All in all, the system filters 100,000 liters of water per hour, or about three times the aquarium’s volume.

As he latches the heavy door to the filtration room behind him, the hint of a self-deprecating smile can be spotted in Fuchter’s profile.

“There aren’t too many crazy people around the world who will do something like this,” he says. “You really need to like it a lot.”

Despite the timing of the video, the aquatic endeavor is clearly not the caprice of a newly-retired rich guy.

Eli Fruchter standing next to what might be the world’s largest home reef aquarium in his living room in Haifa. (Miriam Nahum/Times of Israel)

“I grew up in a very small room, here in Haifa, in another part of Haifa,” he says. “The room was two meters by two meters. And even then, when I was five or six, I had an aquarium. So I guess you can say I’ve been doing this all my life.”

Since then, Fruchter has scaled up significantly.

“I moved from a small one to a bigger one,” he says. “About 10 or 12 years ago, in my old house, I had one — not as big as this, maybe 1,000 gallons — and then it broke, and it flooded my house. That’s when I decided I need to build another aquarium, and the house around it.”

Installing the main aquarium panel. (Facebook/Eli’s 10,000 Gallon Reef Aquarium)

Five years in, the reef aquarium is still a work in progress. Fruchter sees it being another few years before the ecosystem is fully developed. Corals in particular can take many years to begin to flourish.

In the meanwhile, he continues his research by watching the BBC, participating in online forums and viewing YouTube videos from other hobbyists.

“What I’m trying to do is learn from others and show what I’m doing so people can learn from each other, that’s the main purpose why I put the video up,” he says.

Fruchter says this isn’t about publicity, and that he was even surprised at how much attention his video got.

The finished aquarium. (Courtesy/Eli’s 10,000 Gallon Home Reef Aquarium)

“When I made my first video last year, I thought it might get a lot of hits — but this last video was much more technical, about the filtration system,” Fruchter said. “I thought it was just going to be seen by the enthusiasts who requested it. But then it became popular on reddit [a content website], and then it just exploded. And that’s when you called, and HaZinor called, and everybody called, so now I’m… becoming famous.”

While a lesser person might struggle with vanity in such a situation, the newly-retired CEO says he’s not thrilled with his moment in the sun.

Some of the 150 fish and many coral in the aquarium. (Miriam Nahum/Times of Israel)

“I don’t like it. I managed a public company that was worth a billion dollars for many years, and I never appeared on television. So I’ve never had, you know, people that — ” cutting himself off mid-sentence, Fruchter’s eyes were drawn to one of the aquarium’s inhabitants. “This guy is living inside the sand, he goes at night under the sand and he sleeps there, and now he’s digging, trying to find worms and stuff to eat, it’s very interesting.”

“So yeah,” he said, returning to the question. “I don’t really like the attention, but it’s something, that if you put it on the internet, it can happen.”

    The Florida Aquarium

    🏆 Accredited by AZA
    📍 Tampa, United States

Florida Aquarium partners with the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute to support coral research and conservation.

Must see: Sea dragons and seahorses

The Florida Aquarium is no shallow marine menagerie. The experience is designed to take visitors on a journey, beginning with a trickle from one of Florida’s freshwater springs, journeying out to the Florida Keys, and way beyond into international waters.

Guests can walk the Wetlands Trail to see river otters, alligators, and pythons. There are the stars of the No Bone Zone, plus pufferfish and lobsters in the Bays & Beaches exhibit.

Visitors get up close to lemurs, chameleons, and, if so inclined, cockroaches, on the Journey to Madagascar. And don’t miss the opportunity to marvel at the delicate inhabitants of Dragons Down Under – seahorses, sea dragons, and more!

Like many of the best aquariums in the world, The Florida Aquarium prides itself on its conservation initiatives. It’s part of a globally recognized coral conservation program in the Florida Reef Tract (the world’s third-largest barrier reef) as well as programs aimed to protect wild sea turtles, whales and sharks.

Must see: Belugas and Atlantic horseshoe crabs

Valencia’s immense Oceanogràfic is the largest aquarium in Europe, spread across 1,200,000 square feet, just a stone’s skip from the Balearic Sea.

It confidently bills itself as: “a first-rate scientific, educational, and recreational center”. Its habitats, housed in nine underwater towers, represent all the world’s major ecosystems, from the frozen to the temperate and tropical.

Visitors to L’Oceanogràfic can wander between Bermuda and the Canary Islands along the longest aquarium tunnel in Europe, or peer into the crystal-clear home of an inquisitive family of Belugas – the only blood-related group in Europe.

The Mysteries of the Sea exhibit hides creatures renowned for their beauty, oddness, or unique scientific characteristics. Perhaps the most fascinating resident here is the Atlantic horseshoe crab. These blue-blooded, nine-eyed arthropods are actually more akin to spiders and scorpions than crabs, and the hemocyanin in their blood is vital in the field of medicine. It may even have a role to play in the coronavirus vaccine.

The Oceanogràfic carries out numerous marine conservation projects locally and further afield, including studies on sustainable fishing and the protection of bottlenose dolphins, as well as the work undertaken by its Recovery Centre for Marine Fauna.

How could you not want to visit an aquarium resembling an enormous manta ray?

Nausicaá isn’t just an architectural wonder, either. With a huge diversity of sea life and a core educational mission, Nausicaá is one of the best aquariums in the world, focusing on the relationship between mankind and the sea.

Almost 60,000 charismatic creatures call Nausicaá home, from lionfish to sea lions, and from leopard sharks to tiger sharks and small-spotted catsharks. We’ll make a note to ask why so many are named after cats.

There are rare fish who illuminate the dark with torch-like organs, and majestic rays who move as if flying through the deep. And the jellyfish! Is it even possible to watch these gelatinous gems glide around without feeling a little bit awestruck?

Boasting the largest tank in Europe, 1,600 different species are on show across two huge exhibits: Journey on the High Seas, and Mankind and Shores.

The aquarium is also involved in conservation work far from its catchment area, helping to reconstruct the coral reef in the Maldives, and working to protect the African penguin in South Africa.

    📍 Atlanta, United States

Georgia Aquarium is the only one outside Asia to house whale sharks
Photo by Matt Helbig on Unsplash

Must see: Whale sharks and belugas

Georgia Aquarium was the biggest aquarium in the world when it opened in 2005.

Despite now having to settle for third place behind gargantuan water worlds in Singapore and China, it’s still the largest aquarium in the US, and recognized as one of the best aquariums in the world.

A trip to Georgia Aquarium will see guests go nose-to-glass with dolphins, tropical fish, octopuses, sea lions, penguins and lots more. Zones are dedicated to freshwater ecosystems and marine environments, coral reefs and river habitats, all of which are prime for exploring.

There are thousands of delicate creatures floating, crawling, and waddling around – and that’s just the army of visiting toddlers. If you’re looking to see whale sharks up close, Georgia’s is the only aquarium outside of Asia to house this unique and endangered species. The whale shark is certified as the largest fish on Earth – this 2,300-ton bronze puffer fish in China obviously didn’t meet the selection criteria.

As a non-profit organization, educational engagement is at the forefront of the Georgia Aquarium experience. They provide at-home learning resources, on and off-site school programs, live webcams, and volunteer initiatives.

    Must see: Chimeras

Oceanário de Lisboa is the most popular cultural attraction in Portugal and respected as one of the best aquariums on Earth.

A visit to the Oceanarium is a dreamy journey through four incredible zones, which replicate the rocky coastline of the North Atlantic, the icy tundra of the Antarctic, the kelp forests of the Pacific, and the coral reefs of the Indian ocean – not bad for €19!

The aquarium is full of species you’ve never heard of: the bignose unicornfish, the fire goby, the old wife, the wide-eyed flounder, the nursehound, the splendid garden eel, and plenty more. Add to this the peculiar coral, rare sharks, limb-regenerating salamanders, deadly poisonous frogs and elegant puffins, and you can see why the aquarium is such a hit.

Some of the Oceanarium’s biggest draws are the array of temporary exhibitions it puts on each year, from climate change-focused exhibits to spectacles that would be at home in a famous art gallery.

The aquarium is involved in breeding programs in partnership with the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria. It also sponsors various conservation projects outside its walls, such as the Angelshark Project, which aims to protect the critically endangered shark, and a program aimed at safeguarding threatened sea turtles in São Tome and Príncipe.

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is one of Japan’s most popular aquariums, with a specific focus on the animals of the Pacific Rim.

The presentation of the exhibits at Kaiyukan is what makes it one of the coolest aquariums in the world, and the wonder begins the moment guests walk through the Aqua Gate into a tunnel of ocean blue.

The Pacific Ocean covers a third of the world’s surface, so you can imagine just how many curious critters go about their business beneath the ebb and flow.

Represented at Kaiyukan are hammerheads, whale sharks, octopuses, loggerhead turtles, and cute, wide-eyed, but extremely poisonous porcupine fish. See squadrons of squid and packs of piranhas. The Japanese spider crabs, terrifying and alluring in equal measure, can reach a whopping 12 feet in size.

    Aquarium of the Bay

    🏆 Accredited by AZA
    📍 San Francisco, United States

    Photo: Shutterstock

Don’t miss: River otters & bat rays

Aquarium of the Bay proves you don’t have to ship in aquatic wonders from around the world to provide a remarkable aquarium. Theirs is home to over 20,000 marine animals, focusing on the diversity of life within the waters of Northern California.

Found on the famous Pier 39, the non-profit Aquarium of the Bay is full of interesting local characters. There are California sheepheads, who decide their own gender; fearsome bat rays, who crush their food with iron jaws and fight off predators with venomous spines; and friendly sevengill sharks, known to roam the shallows of San Francisco Bay for up to 32 years.

You can immerse yourself (not literally, as tempting as it might be) in the ecosystems of San Francisco Bay by exploring its differing depths, nooks and crannies, and be enamoured by its array of residents as you flow through a range of crystal-clear tunnels.

Aquarium of the Bay works towards a mission of facilitating “the progression of climate resilience and ocean conservation”. From breeding and rescue initiatives, to science and nature programs in schools, Aquarium of the Bay is a bastion of ocean research and education in and around the Bay Area.

It also engages in in-house sustainability projects, focused on waste diversion, water and energy conservation, and pollution prevention.

    The Deep

    🏆 Accredited by WAZA
    📍 Hull, United Kingdom

    Must see: Green sawfish

Hull, in England’s North East, almost certainly isn’t the first place you think of when it comes to the world’s greatest aquariums. But East Yorkshire’s small, award-winning, proudly non-profit, and conservation-first aquarium is one of the best.

Across nine zones, visitors can see sharks, stingrays, gentoo penguins, tropical fish, poisonous frogs, and much more. One of the exhibits is called Slime, and, rather than being full of flailing politicians, it’s dedicated to creatures who depend on goo to survive – clownfish, eels, and the elusive scribbled pipefish.

The Deep also provides sanctuary for the UK’s only pair of green sawfish, which are critically endangered in the wild. Sawfish are just one of the species benefiting from The Deep’s conservation focus.

It contributes to European Breeding Programmes, with success stories including zebra sharks and Madagascan killifish. It also supports conservation projects around the world, and has worked to protect sawfish in Africa, penguins in the Galapagos Islands, sea turtles in the United States, coral in Belize, and, closer to home, Tansy Beetles in York.

    National Aquarium Denmark

🏆 Accredited by EAZA & WAZA
    📍 Copenhagen, Denmark

    Must see: Giant Pacific octopus

Denmark is a hub for architects, so it’s only right that its National Aquarium is as much an architectural masterpiece as it is a haven for aquatic animals.

Visitors to Copenhagen’s Blue Planet (Den Blå Planet) first set eyes upon its award-winning, whale-shaped facade, before heading inside for an audience with over 400 different species.

The largest aquarium in Northern Europe allows you to drift around the waters of the world without ever leaving the cool climes of Scandinavia. See warty stonefish, electric eels, snapping turtles, and birds from the Faroe Islands. The aquarium is also home to a rather intelligent giant Pacific octopus with 2,000 suction cups. It can even unscrew the lid of a jam jar – remember that next time you’re struggling!

And it’s not just the teeming tanks that fascinate. Blue Planet provides visitors with a noted digital exhibition that allows children and inquisitive adults alike to learn about the subtleties and intricacies of sea life through interactive exhibits.

On the conservation front, Den Blå Planet joins forces with researchers, fellow aquariums, NGOs, and initiatives in the Nordic region and beyond. Its collaborations have included revealing research studies on the Greenland shark, a mysterious species that scientists believe can live for as long as 250 to 500 years in the ice-cold waters around Greenland and Canada.

The largest aquarium, the largest aquariums

The aquarium is a piece of real water paradise. And everyone is free to arrange it in their own way. There is where to roam if you have the largest aquarium at your disposal. It can be designed in the image and likeness of champions. Those aquariums that are located, for example, in Europe, Japan or the Emirates of Dubai.

    The largest home aquarium

Fish lovers tend to keep smaller aquariums at home. The maximum volume is usually 50-60 liters. However, some manage to place an aquarium of 1000 liters or even more in a small living space. Who is kept in large aquariums? Whales, sharks and other giants.

    Home aquariums are rarely gigantic

The largest home aquarium was built by a British man named Jack Heathcote. The container reached a length of 4 meters and a height of 2.1 meters. Accommodates an aquarium of more than 20 tons of water. In his pond, Jack placed freshwater stingrays, catfish, pike and other large fish, as well as turtles.

Jack Hiscot breeds huge fish in his home aquarium

The large-scale construction cost the Briton only 5 thousand pounds. And the aquarist was pleased with the aquarium. However, he is not going to stop there. He plans to build a new reservoir that will hold about 200 tons of water.

    Top 10 largest aquariums

One of the largest aquariums in the world is located in Europe, in Germany. The Berlin record holder AquaDom is located at the Radisson Hotel. And this is the largest cylindrical aquarium on the planet. 56 species of fish live in the reservoir, in total, about 2.5 thousand individuals live in it. The height of the aquarium is 25 meters. Guests of the hotel can look at the underwater panorama while moving in the elevator. The aquarium is located in its very center.

    AquaDom Germany’s largest aquarium

In the ninth position of the TOP 10 largest aquariums in the world is a reservoir from Western Australia. The AQWA Aquarium in Perth is 20 meters wide and 40 meters long. It holds 3 million liters of water. Inside there is a 98-meter tunnel. By the way, those who wish can swim in the aquarium with sharks and other fish, however, for an additional fee.

The next in the ranking of the largest aquariums is the aquarium of Genoa and Italy. It was specially built for Expo 92. The system will include about 70 water tanks, each containing a certain type of marine life. In total, about 6,000 inhabitants from all over the planet live in an aquarium with a volume of 3.78 million liters, including sharks, seals and dolphins.

Genoa Aquarium is a huge tank system

The Shanghai Aquarium can be called the largest aquarium in Asia. It was divided into 9 large zones, for example, the Chinese zone, the Antarctic zone, as well as the Australian zone. But the most impressive part is the underwater 155-meter tunnel.

On the sixth line of the list of the largest aquariums is the marine world of Ushaka. It is located in South Africa, in the city of Durban. The system consists of 32 tanks. And the peculiarity of the record holder is that you can watch marine life sitting at a table in a restaurant with glass walls, which is completely immersed in an aquarium.

Under the bottom of the Ushaka Sea World pool is a restaurant

The Monterrey Bay Aquarium holds 4.5 million liters of water. Such a reservoir is located on the territory of the plant, where canned fish was previously produced. The aquarium is special in that it is divided into two giant tanks – 4.5 million liters and 1.2 million liters.

The Turkuaz Aquarium in Istanbul, Turkey boasts an even larger capacity. A reservoir of 4.9 million liters of water was opened in 2009. It was divided into a number of zones and launched into it about 10 thousand marine life, in particular, giant rays, piranhas and tiger sharks. There is an 80-meter tunnel in the aquarium itself.

There is an 80-meter tunnel in the Turquoise Aquarium

In fourth place in the TOP of the largest aquariums is the L’Oceanografic aquarium of the famous City of Arts and Sciences complex, which is located in Valencia. This is the largest aquarium in Europe, it holds 7 million liters of water. Approximately 45 thousand marine inhabitants live on a vast territory.

Japan can also boast of a giant aquarium. The local record holder is called Okinawa Churaumi and is designed for 7.49 million

liters of water. The aquarium is located in Ocean Expo Park and was introduced to residents in 2002. Here you can admire the beauty of marine life through a 60-cm glass.

Dubai has an even bigger aquarium. It is located in The Dubai Mall, in a prestigious area of the city, near the Burj Khalifa. About 33 thousand inhabitants live in 10 million liters of water, including 400 sharks. The aquarium is listed in the Guinness Book of Records because of the huge glass panel, it is famous for its thickness of 75 centimeters, measuring 8.3 by 32.88 meters. Thus, the Okinawa Aquarium was forced to make room for the leader.

Who are kept in large aquariums?

By the way, only those tanks that can hold more than 200 liters of water are called large. In such a water space, it is possible to recreate the ecosystem of any region of the planet. At the same time, the ecological balance is maintained by itself, that is, it does not cause trouble.

A large aquarium doesn’t have to look boring and empty. A family or at least a couple of large fish that will always be in sight should live in the water. But do not forget that some species of large fish are active at dusk and at night, that is, in the light of day they hide. These are, for example, spectacular and original black “knives” (or black ghosts).

Not all fish can get along in an aquarium

In large aquariums, a few medium-sized fish coexist peacefully in the middle layers. But it is better not to add small ones to large ones so that they do not become a delicacy for large pets. The rule works here: if a fish can fit in a neighbor’s mouth, then it is definitely not a tenant. In general, the selection of fish should be carried out not only on the basis of size, but also on the characteristics of behavior, temperament and conditions of detention.

Large aquarium ideal for exotics. All of them are brought in from abroad, so for each pet you will have to pay a decent amount. For example, large parrots are very beautiful fish of yellow, blue and red shades. It looks very impressive in a home pond.

The largest aquarium in the world

A lot of exotic fish can be found in the largest aquarium in the world, which is located in Atlanta, USA. It opened in November 2005. And the record holder is calculated for 23.8 million liters of water. More than 120 thousand animals of 500 varieties live on a vast territory. Four young sharks, whales and some other rare species of marine flora live here. Incidentally, the aquarium is supported by a $250 million donation from Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus.

The largest aquarium in the world is located in the USA

Even the largest fish can comfortably live in large aquariums. For example, a whale shark, which, according to uznayvse.ru, can grow up to 20 meters.

    Choose a large aquarium

The question of how to choose a large aquarium and what shape is acute enough for small apartments. In particular, we have already mentioned that an angular aquarium is the best option in this case.

In general, the classic shape is rectangular. But, the fundamental difference is the bending of the front glass – some companies make it a little convex. Among the leaders in the production of aquariums of impressive size, JEBO, Noble can be distinguished. Firms are time-tested, they produce high-quality products that have been sold with great success for many years.

Problems of buying a large aquarium for the home

Consider the problems and features of keeping large aquarium fish for a large aquarium, as well as all the nuances of installing equipment. In addition to the large volume, which scares many people by the fact that it will take up a lot of space in the apartment, it is also worth highlighting such points as the need to defend a large volume of water, cleaning equipment and an aquarium, etc.

Features of large aquariums in an apartment: in apartment

  • Requires space for settled water
  • A different approach to cleaning equipment
  • On the one hand, finding a place in a small apartment is a real problem, but on the other hand, as a result, you get not just pets, but also a grand decoration that you can surprise your family and friends with. You should not be scared right away, first you need to plan everything, and think about where exactly to put a large aquarium in the apartment. If there is very little space, then installing a corner aquarium is a great solution. And a pedestal, designed specifically for an aquarium of this shape, will help you save a lot of space when placing aquarium equipment.

Since we are talking about a large aquarium, it will also need a lot of water.

Filling the aquarium during start-up is one thing, but keeping water for weekly water changes is another. In particular, for a 300 liter aquarium, the problem will be where to find a place to defend about 50-60 liters for changes. For such purposes, a plastic barrel is bought, and placed either in a closet or pantry, but if one is not available in the apartment, then just in a corner in the room.

Let’s move on to the choice of equipment, namely:

    Filter

Filters are different: external, internal, built-in, mounted. Previously, on an aquarium of 300 liters, two internal filters were enough for me, rated for an average of 200 liters. each. For an aquarium as large as 600 liters, I decided to purchase an external filter. Having behind me a not very pleasant experience with a filter (Tetra, oddly enough), I took the choice of a new filter as responsibly as possible. After surfing the Internet for a week without getting out, I opted for filter from JBL Cristal Profi series 1501e . Graceful design, valves and all other important elements are simply unscrewed, twisted, easy to assemble and install. All filter compartments have convenient folding handles. It does the job well, the water is clean and clear. This filter is so quiet that if it weren’t for the waterfall from the water outlet tube, I would never have understood whether it works or not. There are many pluses, I hope, during the operation of the minuses will not come to light.

    Compressor

Most internal filters can replace the compressor, but if your choice, like mine, fell on a filter without aeration, then you can’t do without a compressor. I opted for a Sera air 550 plus compressor. This compressor has 4 air outlets, which is very convenient if you want to supply several air nozzles, such as different sponge porosity or sponge size. I installed two plate sprayers (diameter 10cm) and a flexible sprayer (length 100cm). He “blows” the plates remarkably, but there is not enough power for flexible. But, it suited me, because the flexible atomizer is buried in the soil near the wall of the aquarium and the rare bubbles rising along the relief background look very wow. It turned out original.

    Heater

Heater “Jager” has proven itself well in the consumer market.
But, I have no personal experience of using heaters, since my fish are rather cold-water, and I live in the middle lane – there are no terrible colds in the apartment, I have nothing to heat the water. On the contrary, it is better to ensure that it does not heat up on its own. But, if you want to get warm-water fish, then the issue of a heater should not be ignored.
This short list of equipment is necessary for the aquarium to “work”. Of course, you can additionally purchase other useful equipment that will greatly facilitate the care of the aquarium:

RECOMMENDATIONS AND TIPS: UV sterilizer, ozonator, cooling systems, cooler , CO2 systems.

The choice is great, but do not forget to carefully read the principles of keeping the type of fish you have chosen. Is the size of your aquarium suitable for them? Are the selected species compatible with each other? What kind of environment in the aquarium do the fish you like prefer, in other words – do they need shelters, plants, what soil do they need, etc. It is better to get acquainted with all these questions on your own. Do not rely on the advice of sales assistants in the store. You may come across a respectable citizen who understands his issue, or maybe vice versa. Unfortunately, the opposite is often the case. Keep in mind the collected information about the fish, it will come in handy in the future.

    Fish for a large aquarium

A special question – fish for a large aquarium. In general, here we are talking not only about fish of an impressive size, since small fish can look very impressive in a large volume.

Large fish are good for their size and spectacular appearance, while small ones will look better in the form of a flock, especially if there are several such flocks.

Larger fish include arowana, torpedo-shaped barbs, shark ball, astronotus, red-tailed catfish, shark catfish, pterygoplicht, discus. In general, in small towns, the choice is not particularly great, since the delivery of such fish is not always properly established. In this case, small schooling fish are an excellent alternative. You can distinguish such fish as cichlids, small barbs, neons of different colors, etc.

It is important that all the inhabitants need to be determined in advance, because some will need certain shelters, plants, etc.

Exotics for a large aquarium fish parrot Today, even rare, original in color and shape of exotic fish for large aquariums. All of them are imported, as a rule, from abroad (more often from Southeast Asia), so you will have to pay a decent amount for the joy of having such pets. Large parrots are incredibly shaped fish in red, yellow and blue hues.

Parrots look more than spectacular in a large aquarium at home. Many bright fish, for which aquarists are ready to sell their souls, seem to be bred by breeders. Remember that the original color of parrots will fade a little over time, because they are colored with special chemicals and fed with preparations that improve color. However, despite such “surprises”, these fish today inhabit even the largest aquariums and delight their owners with their peaceful nature. When a parrot is seen from the front, it seems to be waving its pectoral fins at you, puffing out its plump cheeks widely, and then smiles, rejoicing at the meeting.

    The largest aquariums

It is generally considered that a home aquarium should have a volume of 50-60 liters. Only a few fans manage to host containers of a thousand liters or more. But in order to see the artificial underwater world in its full beauty, you should visit special establishments. After all, among the glass walls there are whole lakes in which large creatures live – sharks and even whales. Visiting such aquariums can be an unforgettable adventure. People are creating aquariums more and more, not just chasing records, but also diversifying the underwater world offered to guests. The largest aquariums in the world will be discussed below.

Western Australia Aquarium, 3 million litres. The name of this underwater world is abbreviated as AQWA. The building is located on the shore of the bay in the city of Perth, in Western Australia. This is the largest aquarium in the world. His story began in 1991. Then Maurice Kahn purchased the Aquarium-attraction “Underwater World” and began its reconstruction. Entrepreneurs set a goal to acquaint people with the underwater world, and to do this as safely as possible for the visitors themselves and for living beings. The project took place, and they even learned how to grow corals in the aquarium, so favorable conditions turned out to be inside. On January 1, 2001, the natural park received its current name. The main tank is 40 meters long and 20 meters wide. An excursion to AQWA is a real walk along the bottom of the ocean, only diving skills and scuba gear are not required here. After all, you can watch the beauties of the underwater world by walking along 98-meter underwater tunnel. Guests of the aquarium can visit five expositions that represent the local inhabitants of the deep sea. And for an additional fee, you can even go scuba diving among the animals. Usually people come to Western Australia Aquarium Park with families and for the whole day.

Aquarium of Genoa, 3.78 million liters. This institution is the largest of its kind in Italy and the second largest in Europe. The area of the aquarium is 3100 m², about 1.2 million people come here every year. And they built an aquarium here for the Genoa Expo 19 exhibition92, dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America by a local native Christopher Columbus. Architect Renzo Piano has designed a building that looks like a ship that is about to be launched. In 1998, the aquarium was expanded – a 100-meter vessel was attached to it, which was connected to the main building by a bridge. Initially, the aquarium was supposed to demonstrate the underwater features of the Ligurian Sea, the North Atlantic and the reefs of the Caribbean Sea. This is the path that Columbus once sailed. The aquarium consists of 70 tanks with a total volume of 6 million liters. More than 5 thousand species of living creatures live here, including sharks, seals, penguins and dolphins. Next to the aquarium is a glass ball with a diameter of 20 meters – “Biosphere”. Here is a piece of the Amazonian forest. An adult ticket to the Genoa Aquarium costs 16 euros.

Shanghai Aquarium, 3.8 million liters. This is one of the largest aquariums in Asia, its area is 20.5 thousand m². It is located near the famous TV tower, in the Pudong area. The oceanarium is divided into 9 thematic zones representing different parts of the ocean – Polar waters, Africa, Australia, China and others. In total, 10 thousand living creatures representing 450 species live in the aquarium. But the most interesting here are the four underwater tunnels, with a total length of 168 meters. This is a world record. The inspection begins with the Chinese zone, further travel to other continents and regions will give a complete picture of the diversity of the animal world presented here. So, in the Asian zone you can see a unique Chinese sturgeon and a huge salamander, up to two meters long. Representatives of the Amazon are represented in the South American zone, including a three-meter arapaima fish with a 6-meter scale, an electric eel. The collection of the oceanarium is very diverse, there are stingrays, sharks, penguins, turtles. But it’s quite difficult for guests to take good photos – poor lighting and many tourists interfere. By appointment, you can even swim next to the sharks. Tickets to the aquarium are quite expensive, starting at $25.

Sea World Ushaka, 3.8 million liters. This aquarium is considered one of the best in the Southern Hemisphere. It is located in South Africa, in the city of Durban. The area of the theme park is 16 hectares, and it was opened in 2004 after 3 years of work. The complex is divided into four parts, and it is located on a strip of land between the beach and the harbor. Sea World is Africa’s largest aquarium with 32 tanks. Its peculiarity is also that there is a restaurant with glass walls, which is located right inside the tank with sharks. So you can watch dangerous predators right at the table. And the shark feeding spectacle on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays is of particular interest to guests. Also, the exhibition complex contains turtles, stingrays, tropical fish – the underwater world of Africa is especially bright and diverse. In the Sea World there is also a dolphinarium, where penguins and seals also perform. It should be noted that in addition to entertainment, the complex is also engaged in scientific research. In addition to the Sea World, the complex has a water park, a beach and an African village.

Monterey Bay Aquarium, 4.5 million liters. The aquarium is considered one of the world’s best research centers. It is located in Monterey, California, on the site of a former canned fish factory. In addition to the immediate huge tank of 4.5 million liters, there is another huge capacity here, with a volume of 1.2 million liters. The huge aquarium, as the name implies, aims to show the rich flora and fauna of Monterey Bay, the largest in the country. The first section is given over to the “Kelp Forest”, where goldfish, anchovies and orange Garibaldi swim among the plants. Aquarium “Depth” is dedicated to those creatures that live at a depth of 30 to 100 meters. It is impossible for an ordinary person to see them in their natural environment. Other exhibitions will tell about the sandy seabed, shale reefs and rocky coast. Although there are no dolphins, whales or fur seals in the aquarium, from the open area you can watch various marine mammals traveling through the bay. Of particular interest is the section “Open Sea”. It is here that the two largest reservoirs are located. Many amazing creatures live here, there are rare jellyfish here, reaching 75 cm in diameter.

Turquoise Aquarium, 4.9 million litres. This aquarium in Istanbul is the largest in Turkey. Even if it does not impress with its area (8 thousand m²), it is cozy here. This place is divided into many thematic zones, about 10 thousand sea creatures live here, including tiger sharks, piranhas and huge rays. But the main pride of the aquarium is an 80-meter underwater tunnel that runs right through the underwater world. The viewing angle here is 270 degrees. The 43 reservoirs are home to both freshwater and marine life. On the institution’s website, you can find out about the feeding time of sharks in order to get exactly to this fascinating spectacle. The aquarium is maintained by a team of 50 people, including engineers, divers, biologists and managers. There are seven divers alone, they feed the inhabitants and clean the aquarium. Turquoise is a dynamic and interactive family entertainment center. A New Zealand company built the entire complex in just six months, the entire project cost 17 million euros and the aquarium opened in 2009year.

L’Oceanografic Aquarium, Valencia, 7 million litres. This aquarium is located in the eastern part of the Spanish city, being part of the famous City of Arts and Sciences complex. The Marine House was designed by the architect Felix Candela. The oceanographic institution is the largest in Europe, with a total area of 111 thousand m², the total volume of water here is 42 million liters. This volume would be enough to fill 15 Olympic pools. The complex is home to 45,000 living creatures representing 500 different species. These are not only fish, but also birds, mammals, reptiles, and invertebrates. Nine above-water floors were inhabited by sharks, penguins, dolphins, sea lions, walruses and many others. The entire park is divided into nine zones. The sea areas are represented by the Mediterranean, the polar oceans – by the Arctic inhabitants, the tropical seas – by the inhabitants of the Red Sea. It is worth paying attention to the pavilion with exotic sea birds, as well as the dolphinarium. Sea water is pumped into the aquarium directly from the beach, passing through several stages of purification. And in this case, guests are invited to walk through the tunnel through the water column. There is also an underwater restaurant in Oceanographics, where you can continue observing marine life.

Okinawa Turaumi Aquarium, 7.49 million liters. This aquarium is located in the Kayohaku Park, which appeared in honor of the International Exhibition of Seas and Oceans. It was held on the Motobu Peninsula in northwestern Okinawa. Okinawa Churaumi opened in 2002. In the depths of the park, 5 minutes from the main entrance, there is an aquarium. He occupied the slope of the hill, thanks to which the floors are arranged here as a step, creating the effect of a gradual descent down. The oceanarium is designed to show the marine life of the Japanese island as fully as possible. Taking into account the peculiarities of Okinawa, the aquarium was divided into three zones: coral reefs and shallow waters, warm waters of the Kuroshio Current, and deep waters. As a result, the organisms living in these zones are quite different from each other. Entering the aquarium, guests find themselves on the third floor. Then the descent begins, which is a kind of immersion in the depths of the ocean. People go from a world of shallow waters, corals and tropical fish, to a layer of the warm current of Kuroshio and to dark mysterious deep-sea places. A person and the water column in the aquarium are separated by as much as 60 centimeters of glass.

Dubai Aquarium, 10 million liters. This aquarium is located in the largest shopping and entertainment center in the Middle East – “The Dubai Mall”. It is located in a prestigious area of the city, surrounding the Burj Khalifa. The aquarium is home to 33,000 marine life, including 400 sharks. Here is the world’s largest glass outer panel for observing the living world. Its size is 8.3 by 32.88 meters with a thickness of 75 centimeters. The total size of the aquarium is 51 by 20 by 11 meters. Thanks to this, the Dubai Aquarium even got into the Guinness Book of Records. In February 2010, the glass began to leak, forcing the evacuation of all spectators. Fortunately, the problem was quickly resolved. You can better see the underwater inhabitants by going through an underwater tunnel with a viewing angle of 270 degrees. Particularly striking is the proximity to stingrays and tiger sharks. Thanks to a special lighting system, the aquarium is either immersed in the night or lives in bright daylight. And the most daring can go diving right here for a fee.

Georgia Aquarium, 23.8 million liters. The turn has come to tell about the world’s largest aquarium. Here, in Atlanta, about 100 thousand living creatures live in an artificial environment. The aquarium opened in November 2005 and is the only one outside of Asia where whale sharks live. In its form, this place resembles a huge cruise ship, divided into 60 separate chambers. Three-quarters of the total volume is occupied by the largest pool, where the largest fish in the ocean live – the same whale sharks. There are four of them – two males and females. And the sea giants were brought here from Taiwan on special planes. Initially, this place was planned solely as an entertainment. But today oceanographic research is also carried out there. Experts believe that up to 2 million people visit the Georgia Aquarium every year. The construction of the aquarium began in 2001 at the initiative of billionaire Bernard Marcus and thanks to his investments. He himself stated that fish live better in an aquarium than in their natural environment. Marcus also loves huge fish, which led to the scale of the project. Construction dragged on for 27 months and cost $200 million. However, the authorities of Atlanta hope that the project will pay off, because the aquarium has become the largest in the world. It is located on an area of 81 thousand m² in the city center. And together with the research center and the conference hall, the complex generally covers an area of 120,000 m².

The largest aquarium in the world. photo, video, where is. top 10 largest

Scientists believe that life originated in the oceans, and only then “flowed” to land. And in order to see creatures that did not want to get out on this very land, it is absolutely not necessary to return to the ocean again. All you have to do is visit the aquarium.

Having calculated the total capacity of popular aquariums, we have chosen the largest aquarium in the world and tell you where it is located. As well as smaller aquariums, but you might like them even more. After all, each of them is unique in its own way.

The largest aquarium in the world what is the name of the description TOP 10 aquariums on the planet

The largest aquarium in the world: what is the name, description, TOP-10 oceanariums of the planet

just do not have souls in aquarium fish. They can enjoy standing for hours in front of a large glass wall and admiring these creatures. Even more emotions can be experienced if you get into the largest aquarium in the world, which amazes its guests not only with its incredible size, but also with its unusual inhabitants.

    A grand building

The largest aquarium in the world is located in the US state of Georgia. Its volume is 23. 8 million. In total, 120 thousand individuals live in this tank, the total cost of which is about 290 million dollars. The big aquarium is called Georgia Aquarium.

    A bit of history

This gigantic structure was created in 2005 by and boasts a rather interesting history of its construction. The richest man in the state of Georgia in those years was Bernie Marcus. He decided to donate $250 million to the government of the city of Atlanta. Those, in turn, were confused, not knowing what to use the donated funds for.

And then Marcus himself put forward the idea of building the largest aquarium in the world, which should be located in his state. The fact is that since childhood, Bernie himself loved to watch the living creatures in the aquarium. And he wanted the inhabitants of his hometown to also be able to admire these creatures.

Before the advent of the aquarium in Atlanta, the largest aquarium in the world was the one located in Japan on the island of Okinawa. But the area of Georgia Aquarium was 200 thousand square meters and it became much larger than the Japanese one. It took 27 months to build this structure.

    General description

Atlanta’s giant aquarium is shaped like a large cruise ship divided into 60 separate chambers. In the center of the building itself is a bust of a man who initiated the construction of this miracle. All chambers are divided into separate thematic zones. There are very few of them:

George’s underwater world, built mainly for small children. Inhabitants of cold reservoirs, where you can meet very interesting representatives of the fauna. Tropical area with penguins, crabs and sea lions. A trip to the river, where representatives of local rivers are concentrated. The ocean zone is a real living reef with corals.

In total, the entire capacity of the chamber is 34 million tons of water. There are also departments filled only with salt or only fresh water.

In addition, the aquarium has a tunnel 30 m deep into the glass structures. When a person walks along this corridor, a 7 m long whale shark can be seen swimming above his head.

Guests can even feed this creature on their own, which, by the way, eats only plankton. When people feed a shark, arrogant small fish swimming nearby, the size of which is several times smaller than a giant fish, calmly eat its food. The shark does nothing at the same time, only maliciously wags its tail. If a small fish accidentally swims into her mouth, she simply chokes. And for $300 you can even swim next to a whale shark.

Various large-scale exhibitions and events of the highest level are often organized on the territory of the structure, aimed at promoting the conservation of the aquatic environment.

    Ticket prices and inhabitants

Anyone who wants to visit the aquarium in Georgia will be wondering what the cost of tickets is. The price for a typical adult is almost $30. To get into this building, a pensioner will have to pay 21 dollars. The cost of a child ticket is $19. Despite such a small price of visiting the aquarium, it paid for itself in record time – literally 3 months after opening. During this time, there have already been one million visitors. Summer 2009Georgia Aquarium welcomed its 10 millionth guest. After this event, the administration of the building no longer began to keep records of visitors.

In addition to the usual inhabitants of oceanariums, there you can also meet very exotic sea creatures:

    • large sea bass;
    • white whales;
    • whale sharks, which have never been seen outside of Asia.

In total, more than 500 species of creatures live in the aquarium, so people can always see something new for themselves.

    Programs and activities

The aquarium was designed in such a way that all guests can get the maximum of positive emotions and keep memories of this visit for the rest of their lives. One of Georgia Aquarium’s goals is to improve the education of visitors, regardless of their occupation and age. Here, guests study the diversity of marine life, receiving a huge amount of interesting and useful information about these individuals. The largest bay is home to two whale sharks, which are the focus of visitors.

The administration organized an exhibition of artifacts found at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean after the well-known liner “Titanic” was wrecked. In addition, visitors to Georgia can see various informational videos, displays and about 200 items raised from the ocean floor. The interior of the ship that sank in 1912 was completely copied.

The entire chronology of the liner’s life is presented to the guests. The exhibition was facilitated by the New York firm RMS Titanic, which has the right to lift found items from the wrecked ship, as well as to officially take photos and videos. Employees of this company organized 7 expeditions at a depth of about 3 kilometers.

Top 10 largest aquarium fish with names and photos

Aquarium fish are extremely diverse in body shape, color and, of course, size. In amateur aquariums, you can meet both pets that do not exceed 3 centimeters in length, as well as real giants that can easily grow to 50 cm or more. True, for their maintenance you will need a spacious aquarium, because only in a suitable volume of water can a fish reach its maximum size. Despite the impressive size of some aquarium fish, their popularity does not decrease at all, because they often have beautiful colors and complex behaviors.

We bring to your attention the top 10 big fish for which you will have to run far from miniature aquariums.

    Turquoise Acara

Turquoise Acara is a large aquarium fish native to South America. The maximum body size of this pet can reach 30 cm in length. The main color of the body is silver-gray, bluish-green dots are located on most of the body, the fins have a yellow edging.

To keep a pair of fish, you need an aquarium of 300 liters or more. Akara is distinguished by increased aggressiveness, for which she was nicknamed the “green terror”. It is better to keep her only with proportionate neighbors, but even this does not guarantee successful cohabitation. The turquoise akara has a well-defined parental instinct, the fish take care of the eggs and fry until they are able to feed on their own.

    Arowana

The Arovana family is a group of very unusual fish. They are the owners of an elongated body, the length of which at home is 60-100 cm. This is perhaps the largest aquarium fish. Its second feature is an unusual and very capacious mouth, which allows the arowana to swallow even large prey. An adult arowana will need an aquarium of almost 1000 liters of water. Fish swim near the surface of the water, sedately and gracefully. Keeping an arowana is allowed only with large cohabitants, because small fish will quickly become its prey.

    Astronotus

Astronotus is a large aquarium fish originating from the rivers of South America. In a suitable volume of the aquarium, they can grow up to 25-30 cm. And in nature, individuals up to 45 cm long are not uncommon. It is not surprising that this fish is considered a trophy among sports fishing enthusiasts.

Astronotus has a beautiful, streamlined body with a pointed head. This immediately betrays a predator in him, ready to quickly rush to his prey. The black and red color of the cichlid is very attractive. They contain fish most often in pairs, each individual should have at least 100 liters of water. In most cases, proportionate neighbors are treated loyally.

    Pangasius

If you have a spacious aquarium from 400 liters and want to see a freshwater fish in it, very similar to a shark, then pangasius is an excellent choice. It is easy to confuse an adult fish from afar with the famous marine predator. In home aquaria, pangasius usually do not exceed 50 cm in size, although natural specimens can easily grow twice as large.

The fish are very active and love space. It is worth noting that they are extremely shy, any sudden movement or sound can cause them to have a panic attack. Shark catfish can only be combined with fish that cannot fit this predator in the mouth.

    Piranhas

Perhaps no other fish scares people like piranhas. Numerous rumors and distorted facts about her immense bloodthirstiness are firmly planted in the minds of many people. But those who do not share this point of view quite successfully keep these interesting pets in home aquariums. An adult piranha can reach a size of 35 cm. This is a schooling fish that must be settled in a group, so the aquarium must be at least 300 liters in size. It is advisable not to plant other fish with piranhas, conflicts are unlikely to be avoided.

    Pterygoplicht brocade

Giant catfish or brocade pterygoplicht is one of the largest representatives of its family. The body length from the head to the tip of the tail can be up to 50 cm. But despite its huge size, this is a herbivorous catfish that will not hunt its neighbors in the aquarium. It is necessary to keep pterygoplichts in aquariums from 250 liters.

    Parrot fish

Parrot fish, obtained by crossing several species of cichlases (which exactly is still kept secret), is not uncommon in amateur aquariums. This fish, unpretentious in care, with a bright, most often red, color, a constant “smile” on the face, slightly clumsy when swimming, cannot but attract attention. In a suitable volume, parrots can grow up to 25-30 cm. An aquarium should be selected from 250 liters. The fish are sterile, and despite regular spawning, it is not possible to get offspring from them.

    Flower Horn

Flower Horn, like the parrot fish, is the creation of Asian breeders. A distinctive feature of this pet is a highly developed fat growth on the head. Moreover, the larger it is, the higher the value of the fish. Flower Horn is a real giant, the maximum body length is 40 cm. One fish should have at least 150 liters of water, and with a group content – at least 800 liters, because Flower Horns are distinguished by increased territoriality. However, unlike parrot fish, Flower Horns are able to breed at home.

    Frontosa

It is not by chance that this wonderful fish was called the “Queen of Tanganyika”. It is difficult to find a more majestic and beautiful cichlid with a magnificent striped color. Adult frontoses can grow up to 30 cm in length. They are usually kept in a harem of a male and a group of females. The recommended volume of the aquarium is from 300 liters. Can get along with other cichlids of Lake Tanganyika, and often even with relatives from Lake Malawi.

    Chukuchan

Chukuchan, or Chinese sailboat, is one of the most unusual and large aquarium fish. It has a triangular body shape with a well-developed dorsal fin and can reach 30 cm in length. However, despite its decent size, it is a completely peaceful fish that feeds on algae, which is clearly indicated by its sucker mouth. Chukuchans are recommended to be kept in small groups. Problems with the placement of young individuals usually do not arise; an aquarium of 300 liters or more will be enough for them. But for adult fish and 1000 liters may not be enough.

10 largest aquariums in the world

Do you want to look into the unique and colorful world of amazing creatures like the fairy-tale hero Sadko? If you answered yes, then get an aquarium that will allow you to get a lot of positive emotions. Large aquariums are not only expanse for the inhabitants, but also a unique means to cheer up, restore strength, improve well-being and balance the microclimate in the apartment.

To get the most out of your underwater corner, you need to make at least a minimum of effort to maintain it. How to be an artificially created piece of the underwater world is entirely up to you!

Dimensions and shapes of aquariums: debriefing

Haven’t decided on the volume and shape of the aquarium yet? It so happened that many beginners acquire small aquariums. Of course, the costs in this case will be minimal, but what is it like for the inhabitants in such “puddles”? Only large aquariums make it possible to achieve a rapid establishment of biological balance and its further maintenance: here it is almost impossible to disturb it with inept actions and excess food.

In Atlanta (Georgia) is currently the largest aquarium in the world: it is designed for more than 32 thousand cubic meters of water, and the number of inhabitants in it exceeds 120 thousand animals of 500 varieties, including not only fish, but also marine exotics.

Video of the largest aquarium in the world

Large aquariums are called tanks with a volume of more than 200 liters. This is a real treasure for an amateur aquarist, because here you can create a closed ecosystem of any region of the Earth. In addition, you do not have to pore over maintaining the eco-balance: it happens naturally and does not cause trouble.

If you are wondering “how to make a big aquarium”, then you need to show a lot of imagination. It is not difficult to achieve what you want, the main thing is to allocate free time for this. One of the significant advantages of large aquariums is the enhanced selection of fish. You can even start several types of territorial large cichlids, creating shelters from artificial grottoes and stones to maintain peace “in the bank”. You can also add a huge flock of small characins shimmering with all the colors of the rainbow, making the aquarium surprisingly bright.

Features of large aquariums in an apartment:

    1. Takes up more space in the apartment
    2. Needs space for standing water
    3. A different approach to cleaning equipment

On the one hand, finding a place in a small apartment is a real problem, but on the other hand, as a result, you get not just pets, but also a grandiose decoration that can surprise relatives and friends.

Large aquariums require special equipment. First of all, these are external aquarium filters. Unlike the internal filter, the external one must be cleaned every 2 months. The procedure for cleaning an external aquarium filter has its own characteristics, and takes a lot of effort. On the other hand, for such purposes in your city you can always find specialists who do this on a professional basis, for example, aquarium stores. We advise you to do everything yourself – it is from this process that true aquarists get real pleasure.

Features of selecting fish for a large aquarium

Having set up a large aquarium at home, remember that it should not look empty and boring. A family or a couple of large fish can live here, which will always remain in sight. Do not forget that some species of large fish are nocturnal inhabitants and in the light they hide securely in shelters, leading an active life only at dusk. This rule applies to spectacular and original black “knives” (or “black ghosts”). In the daytime, they mostly hide in shelters, so immediately decide what you want – to have a decently designed aquarium or original fish.

A dozen medium-sized fish can coexist peacefully in large aquariums, freely swimming in the middle layers. It is better not to add small types of fish to large ones: only if you want to please your big pets with delicacies. The golden rule of the aquarium hobby is: if a fish fits in a neighbor’s mouth, it’s a non-resident.

Even the largest aquariums do not have to look like a gathering place for all the variety of fish found at the pet market. Do not place all the inhabitants you like indiscriminately in such an aquarium. The selection of fish should be based on the size, behavior, conditions of detention, temperament. A corner of nature overpopulated with fish is unlikely to become a worthy decoration for a home or office.

    The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

This list would not be complete without mentioning the Japanese Aquarium located in Ocean Expo Park on Okinawa Island. Opened for viewing in 2002, Okinawa Churaumi’s acrylic glass panel is the second largest after the one at the Dubai Research Center, but more on that later. The Okinawa Aquarium has many pleasant surprises for visitors. And in 2010, four very rare black stingrays saw the light in the aquarium.

    Exotics for large aquariums

Today, even rare, original in color and shape exotic fish for large aquariums can be purchased in the markets and pet stores. All of them are imported, as a rule, from abroad (more often from Southeast Asia), so you will have to pay a decent amount for the joy of having such pets. Large parrots are incredibly shaped fish in red, yellow and blue hues. In a large aquarium at home, parrots look more than spectacular.

Many of the brightly colored fish for which aquarists are willing to sell their souls seem to have been bred by breeders.

    Monterey Bay Aquarium
