When you have us out to evaluate your bathroom, ask your design consultant to discuss our complete line of bathroom remodeling services. Whether you are looking for a company to perform a full remodel, install a new bathing space, or you plan to do some of the work yourself, Atlas will design the package that is right for you and your budget.
If you are planning to remodel your entire bathroom you may also want to try our very popular Phase 1 / Phase 2 plan. This is where you have us complete the “wet” tub/shower area as Phase 1 and then start the rest of the bathroom or Phase 2 at your convenience after the first phase is completed. Most remodeling companies do not like to do a Phase 1 / Phase 2 project, but there are several advantages to you – especially if you have never worked with the company before.
Consider the following advantages to remodeling in Phases:
- Ability to test your contractor on a smaller project first
- It is more affordable to do a bath remodel in phases
- Initial design consultation will take half as long
- Your bathroom is not under construction for so long
- Easier to pick out Phase 2 choices if Phase 1 is complete
- Project will be less stressful (not so many choices at once)
Vanities & Vanity Tops
Our bath vanities come in many colors & styles and look great in any bathroom. We have both standard and custom widths available as well as multiple cabinet depths. Ask your design consultant about the difference in wait times between our standard “in stock” models versus “custom” options.
We offer both natural granite and quartz vanity tops as well as man-made composite. This gives you a plethora of color options to suit any style you have in mind. Our natural tops include an undermount sink (white or bisque) whereas our non-porous composite tops can be installed as one-piece sinks to match the vanity top or with a two-tone second color of white or biscuit. All our vanity tops will be custom drilled depending on the chosen fixtures. We also have a nice selection of pedestal sinks which are great for bathrooms with size limitations.
Vinyl Plank Flooring
Our 100% waterproof vinyl plank flooring system is designed specifically for bathrooms and will not warp or buckle. These floors come in a wide selection of wood or stone patterns and the textures create the most authentic look. Our floors protect against wear and stains and are basically maintenance free as they do not need sanding, polishing, sealing or refinishing.
Finish off your new flooring or wainscoting installation with our unique wallbase system. Our rubber wallbase won’t stain, dent, scratch, splinter, chip or absorb liquids. It is also mildew resistant, guaranteed not to fade and you will never paint your trim again!
Toilets & Accessories
Whether you are looking for something basic or a toilet with all the bells and whistles, Atlas has you covered. As a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS), we recommend you consider a one-piece “comfort height” toilet which is about 3″ higher than a traditional toilet. For a better flush, try a 3″ wide flush valve which is 125% larger than the standard 2″ valve.
Atlas offers an array of other bathroom products including wainscoting, lighting, sink fixtures, etc. Plus, we also offer a full range of accessories such as towel bars, towel rings, robe hooks, tank levers, toilet paper holders and decorative grab bars.

“WOW! Our gutters look great! Josh And Kamrin arrived right on time and got quickly to work. They were very friendly and didn’t mind our 6 year old grandson asking questions. I would recommend Atlas to our friends.”
– Kathy S.
“I have been impressed with Atlas home improvement they do things the way I would. Kelly was our installer and was unbelievably hard-working very conscientious and even went the extra mile and called in a grizzly Veteran plumber when presented with a problem. We have used Atlas before and will again soon!”
– Tony M.
“Just a quick note to thank Atlas Home Improvement for the new Gutter Helmet install we received today . From the sales representative Hunter who answered all our question about the product and the company itself to the office personnel that scheduled and kept us informed about the date and times the install crew would arrive (Brook). Kevin and Rick did a great job installing and cleaning up afterwards . Thank you Rick for calling us the morning of install just to verify that indeed you would be arriving shortly . Undoubtably one of the best companies I have dealt with . Atlas made it so very easy to keep myself Safe and my home secure from gutter water damage . “
– Harold B.
“This was our second experience with Atlas. The shower in our last home was truly a primary selling feature. We returned to Atlas because of the quality of the job and the professionalism of the install. We were happy to see the same installers we had at our other house three years ago arrive here today. Chad and Bill did an excellent job. We received the same professionalism and quality we expected. They arrived with all the materials they would need, no hidden surprises, quality materials. They truly live up to everything they promise!”
– Rob R.
“Chris and Brandon did a great job on my Kitchen, I love how it looks! Chris had to come back to fix some things and he fixed all of it.”
– Linda B.
“Recently, Atlas Home Improvement finished the second phase of my bathroom remodel. Matt and Chad were here every morning on time, stated in their morning phone call. They were friendly, efficient, knew their job and the job site was always in order and clean. They even went out of their way to make sure I was aware of all aspects of the job. They were GREAT!!! This is a great company!!! Very clean and considerate while putting in my new shower. Time the sales consultant was wonderful and really listened to what I want and was never pushy or tried to sell me something I didn’t want. David did a wonderful job installing my shower. Great product they sell. I recommend this company highly!”
– Donna P.
“Dave put in a stair lift for me and I was very, very pleased with the whole experience. He assessed the situation with an eye on my safety and recommended changing the side of the staircase the lift was to be installed on. He did the installation quietly and quickly and without creating any mess. And he made sure I understood how the equipment worked and watched me test ride it. I could not have been more satisfied with the whole process. I would highly recommend Atlas to any senior looking to modify their home so that they can age in place. “
– Dorrie R.
“We were experiencing temperature problems with our brand new walk-in tub, in that the temperature would not get very hot. After a call to Atlas we were scheduled by the office staff for an appointment within 2 days, which we very much appreciated. Dave arrived on time and immediately diagnosed the problem – and he quickly fixed it. Dave was very professional, pleasant, friendly, and knowledgeable. Our problem has now been fixed! Thank you Atlas for having such a great installation, office, and repair staff.”
– Norv S.
“We had our shower completely re-done by Dave. It was a custom job that involved replacing a sub floor and some plumbing issues. They were friendly, hard workers, our shower turned out perfect! I strongly recommend Atlas Home Improvement they stand by their work!”
– Sherry G.
“Our dealings with Atlas Home Improvement have been nothing but a delight. We had booked them through Home Depot Home Services which had a salesman come out and was easy to deal with and took his time to explain all of the steps to the process. Atlas delivered the exact way they had promised we were in the loop knowing when our materials were ordered when they came in and to finally setting up the appointment. The workmanship was 5 star excellent and we could not have been happier with our new shower enclosure it really made a difference!”
– Sharron R.

Bathroom remodel ideas have a tendency to leave us lusting after looks that we think are unachievable and very costly. It goes without saying that any bathroom reno is a big task that will require a little spend. And, it can seem complicated if you’re working with a small space, or one that’s awkwardly shaped, with quirky (even visible) pipework, not much natural lighting and so on.
However, not all bathroom renovations require you to spend all your cash or to rip out any fixtures – or walls for that matter. And, you can remodel a bathroom on a shoestring budget, creating the same gorgeous finish, without the cost.
Whether you have $5000 or $50 to spend, you’ll be able to make the right changes to suit your space. And should you need plumbing and more specialist work doing, you’ll want to know the best approach for your project, to help bring all those gorgeous bathroom ideas to life with minimal complications (and costs).
Geoff Cash, Founder of Refresh Remodeling and Remodeling Expert says that any remodeling project needs to have thorough planning to be successful. ‘If the process isn’t planned thoroughly, it might be costly for the client and might take a longer time to accomplish.’ So you want to plan your bathroom layout and stick to it. As making unnecessary changes to your existing sanitaryware layout will keep plumbing costs down.
Once the bathroom design is finalized do not change it, but before signing it off show it to the electrician, tiler and other related trades to make sure they can’t see any issues that will interfere with their part of the project. Thankfully there are plenty of budget-friendly bathroom remodeling ideas to incorporate into your project.
1. Beautifully salvaged sanitaryware
Bathroom remodels provide a good opportunity to reuse any good-quality taps or sanitaryware – roll-top baths are usually salvageable – or, for a cost-effective way to update existing fittings, you can always re-enamel or add a new surround to a bath. This is not only cost-effective, but a great way to maintain character. ‘A trick I tell people as a flipper is to go to the hardware store and buy spray paint. Putting Antique Gray Spray Paint on bathroom fixtures will change the feel of the bathroom immediately. When it comes to remodeling, think outside the box. A remodel can be done on a hot dog budget with caviar results.’ Says Eric Nerhood of Premier Property Buyers .
Use existing plumbing where you can is best according to Jake Romano of John The Plumber . ‘Moving your bathroom around can add to the cost. ‘ And if you do need any additional fixtures, purchase them yourself to cut costs, ‘Buy your own fixtures. A plumbing company won’t be shopping around for deals the way that you can. Buy popular brands of fixtures, as replacement parts and cartridges are more readily available. Finding unknown brands online can be a risky game down the road. Replace plumbing as needed while any plumbing is exposed. Older pipes may need to be replaced and it’s a lot easier if they’re accessible.’ Keep your guard up when shopping on Kijiji or eBay. ‘You can often find great deals on like-new products from the renovation projects of other people. However, sometimes there’s a sneaky reason that an individual is replacing something.’ Advises Romano.
2. Location dos and don’ts
Changing the tub placement can totally transform a small bathroom but there are some items that won’t be so worth it according to Cash. ‘Do not change the location of the faucet. You can change the faucet but do not relocate. Relocating will result in more work which will cost you more.’ If you do need to move more key elements, try to at least keep the toilet close enough to connect to the existing soil pipe for less plumbing complications and to keep bathroom remodel costs down.
3. Mix and match materials
When you remodel a bathroom, mix items of sanitaryware from different suppliers, in order to offset affordable buys against luxuries such as a quality bath. Saving you money without compensating on a stylish, quality finish.
Cash adds, ‘It doesn’t necessarily mean that when a material is cheap, it’s not durable. If you research well, you’ll find the best alternative with the same quality as the expensive ones but at a fraction of the cost.’
Ensuring you know the difference between bad quality cheap fixes – such as plastic baths or shower trays that are so thin they are flexible and, therefore difficult to seal and make watertight – and cheaper but sound materials that will still perform and look good is key. ‘Some materials are not expensive but look expensive. Find the right set of materials to give your bathroom a different look that is within your budget.’ And, there are plenty more budget bathroom ideas where that came from.
When you’re remodeling a small space like a loft bathroom, designs that trick the eye are your friend. Here, the homeowners have used a wall-hung vanity unit that allows the floor to run underneath, making the space feel larger than it is. The walk-in shower features an alcove for storing toiletries, which avoids shelves intruding into the space.
Adding textural and tonal interest to even the most neutral of bathrooms with matt black hardware enhances the look furthermore. Ultra modern and incredibly sleek, it looks great in almost any space. Here, the shower fixtures, tap and vanity unit add dramatic flair, while pared-back white wall tiles in interesting shapes keep things feeling light and bright.
5.
Simple bathroom remodels
shower renovation inspiration
Keep the design simple in your bathroom remodel and keep curves, steps, decorative moldings and any ornamentation super low key. The simpler the design, the more cost-effective it will be to fit out. The worst bathroom remodeling mistakes happen when your project becomes overly complicated.
Nerhood says ‘The bathroom is usually the most neglected room in a home when it comes to remodeling. Home owners redo the living room, kitchen, dens/dining rooms, but the bathroom is just there. And there are great ways to make the bathroom almost a showplace. People are finding that even just. recessing a soap dish, medicine cabinet, and toilet paper roll holders can give the room a sleek look.’
6. Tiling that makes a major difference
(Image credit: Kasia Fiszer © Future)
Patterned floor tiles work to add interest to this simple scheme and draw the other bathroom paint colors together. The Victorian style print echos the period of the property and complements the traditional bath and shower perfectly. Simple metro tiling gives a polished and styled finish to the space, adding height and the illusion of space without knocking down any walls.
7. Functional beautiful flooring
Nerhood recommends to stay away from hardwood as it’s not the best for bathroom remodels for the amount of water and steam in the room. ‘Go with porcelain or ceramic tile, vinyl plank or vinyl tile.’ You can find brilliant mimics of wood in different types of vinyl flooring now that are even totally waterproof and a lot more affordable.
8. Colors that pop
(Image credit: Future © Dan Duchars)
Make a bold statement with the brightest bathroom remodel ideas and choose a striking color scheme like the pink here. Pairing it with on-trend black gives an industrial edge to the pretty palette. Splitting the room in half with color and taking the top color right up to the ceiling, plays with the visual dimensions of the space but without the cost of extending.
9. Make an entrance with small bathroom remodels
Different types of doors will work with different bathroom remodels. Wood will give a warm, cozy feel and be furable, while uPVC options and glass doors are hugely popular also. Cyrus Vaghar, real estate agent with Coldwell Banker in Boston suggests, ‘When space is limited, particularly when remodeling a first floor half-bathroom, we have seen many homeowners opt for a sliding entry door. Using this method, we have had clients able to add in an extra half-bath where they otherwise did not expect to.’
10. Use mirrors to enhance a bathroom’s space
When tackling small bathroom designs renovations be sure to consider large mirrors that can make a small bathroom feel lighter and more spacious – a frameless mirror covering the whole of one wall is very effective. To avoid misting up after showers and baths, fit heated pads behind the mirror.
11. Unexpected and smart additions
If you’re keen to add value to your property with a bathroom remodel then look to enhance your space with the unexpected. ‘We’ve noticed an increase in bidet and bidet attachment installations in recent years, so that might be something work considering to install as they seem to be growing in popularity. Adds Romano, noting a higher demand for rainfall and other fancy shower fixtures also. ‘Sometimes custom showers aren’t as expensive as you think.’
There are also plenty of smart bathroom features on the market now including motion-detected faucets. ‘High-efficiency faucets and fixtures are increasingly popular’ says Romano. And, for smart home tech fans, myriad options include waterproof televisions that sit flush within a wall, built-in hi-fi systems, smart lighting controls with preset moods for atmosphere, and automation of blinds and bath fillers. These need planning in at the offset so that wiring can be accounted for.
12. Clever custom swaps
Savannah Phillips, Interior Designer for The Knobs Company suggests how instead of ripping out vintage cabinetry which would be expensive, you could simply upgrade the knobs. ‘Switching out the hardware of the cabinetry can take something from vintage to modern with a few hundred dollars, completely ripping out and buying new cabinetry is going to be a couple of thousands of dollars depending on the size and style.’
13. Upgrade shower walls
Keith Melanson, Project Manager of RenosGroup notes the huge difference you can make by tiling a shower. Plus, if you DIY, you’ll save a ton. ‘Retiling your shower walls can make a world of difference and can change the aesthetic in your bathroom. This bathroom renovation is popular as it adds an entirely new look to this room. As this space is one of the most used home areas, the tiles are the focal of your bathroom; you want to make sure you love them. The best way to save money on this project is to stay within your budget when shopping for tiles.’
14. Expansive wet rooms
Wet room ideas are all the rage and when well-designed they come into their own. They are a little more costly of all the bathroom remodel ideas but on the flip side, they are practical, space-enhancing and a dream to use for the whole family.
15. A balanced lighting scheme
Philips adds ‘Bathrooms often do not get any form of natural lighting, and in homes sometimes the artificial lighting isn’t sufficient and can ruin the entire aesthetic. Instead of starting from scratch with new cabinetry, counters and wall coverings, try changing the light levels to something that would be suitable for the bathroom. Switching just the bulbs in the existing fixtures to LED bulbs can be a $5 fix per bulb versus a couple thousand dollar full bathroom remodel. With the saved money you can even splurge on switching to a vanity fixture around the existing mirror. These minor changes can completely update and change the entire look of the bathroom, and anything in it!’
So even installing simple bathroom lighting ideas can make a vast improvement. Opt for pendant lighting — a single central fitting will prove much cheaper than individual downlights or wall lights. Check out multi-bulb fittings that only require a single power cable, for a flexible scheme.
Choose one feature that will give your bathroom a standout, luxe feel. This might be a freestanding bath – take a look at our pick of the best rolltop baths for traditional homes – or splashing out on some really fancy taps. Or, if you’ve found tiles beyond your budget, use them on a statement wall with a more affordable complementary tile elsewhere.
17. Storage meets style

Nothing can ruin a nice new room faster than clutter, so don’t forget about bathroom storage ideas when bringing your bathroom remodeling looks to life. Fitted furniture offers the chance to achieve a co-ordinated finish, with every type of bathroom improvement project, but it needs to be planned from the start. Freestanding and modular furniture offer more flexibility and can be added after the sanitaryware is in place. Modular furniture can also be wall-mounted, making effective use of space in clutter-prone areas of the bathroom.

‘Replacing your vanity is one of the most popular bathroom renovations as it is another focal point of your space. Homeowners often lack counter or sink space in the bathroom, and swapping out their vanity is the easiest solution. The best way to save cost on this project is to keep the vanity in the same spot, as moving plumbing fixtures can be very costly. Another way to save money is to keep your old fixtures for your new vanity if it is a possibility.’ Says Melanson.
Bathroom remodeling tips
Pick reputable tradespeople for your bathroom renovation
Be it plumbers, builders, decorators or electricians, always pick a trusted tradesperson and do your research on your chosen bathroom renovators. Use recommendations from friends and ask to see previous examples of their work.
Romano says ‘I’d emphasize using an insured plumber. There are a lot of liabilities when water is involved, and even the most skilled individuals can have issues. Having insurance can make a big difference.’
Telltale signs of un-trustworthy tradespeople are, those who ask for cash – it is illegal for them not to declare their income and if you have no receipt, you have no comeback should things go wrong. Likewise, beware of requests for upfront payments which can imply cash flow problems, or that builders’ merchants won’t give them credit. Any reputable builder will be happy to sign a simple contract with you and a third party to ensure the agreed work is on schedule.
Appoint an electrician early on in a bathroom remodel
You will need to find an electrician for any rewiring, lighting schemes and the addition of an electric shower or shower pump. Chat to one before any building or plumbing work starts so they can plan their jobs into your bathroom remodel schedule. Make sure you choose a registered electrician as you will get additional protection should something go wrong.
Remember you can haggle on your bathroom renovation cost
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with asking for a discount – one of our favorite bathroom remodel tips – in fact, it’s built into some shops’ official policies. Even the big high street DIY stores can be open to negotiation on prices.
Select sanitary ware before plastering or tiling
To ensure the hot and cold pipes and waste are in the correct positions, you need to choose all sanitary-ware before plastering or tiling. Specify everything before first-fix stage, as leaving key decisions until the sales are on can mean expensive alterations with your bathroom renovator.
Think about waterproofing the space
Tile backer boards can be used to line bathroom walls and shower enclosures. They are 100 per cent waterproof when taped and jointed, and act as insulation too (so are a great recommendation when installed below underfloor heating). These will limit the risk of leaks which can be incredibly damaging and costly to repair.

Never skimp on brassware
These are the items that are in use every day, in particular concealed valves that regulate your home’s water temperature. Look for ‘rub clean’ showerheads with easy-clean nozzles that will prevent limescale build-up; great in a hard-water area.
Conceal pipework
For a clean look, ask the plumber working on your bathroom renovation to conceal pipework and services in flooring, ceilings and boxing wherever possible. This also makes tiling and laying flooring much easier. However, be sure to make sure vital components are accessible in the event of a leak.
If you are installing a freestanding bath away from walls, you can raise it on a plinth and hide pipework underneath.
Don’t forget about ventilation
Many cases of damp are due to condensation. A bathroom is damp and steamy by nature, so install adequate ventilation systems (such as an extractor fan) to keep moisture to a minimum when planning your bathroom reno.
‘One not-so-exciting element of bathroom remodelling is ventilation. A lot of folk make the mistake of under-thinking this part, but proper ventilation is really vital to avoiding damp and mold, which can create serious health issues, not to mention potentially significant repair costs.’ Says Michael Dean, Co-Founder at Pool Research .
If your bathroom has wooden windows, a window vac that can suck up condensation will prove invaluable for quickly getting rid of water that may rot the frames.
Avoid wall-mounted sanitaryware if you’re on a low budget
Ditch wall-mounted fittings, as less work equals less cost. Wall-mounted taps, basins and toilets often require specialist fixings, chasing out to house plumbing, and the concealment of cisterns. It’s quicker and cheaper to fit deck-mounted taps, pedestal basins and close-coupled WCs.
A bigger space will need more heat
If you are extending the bathroom space in your remodel or if you’re adding an ensuite, don’t forget that this will mean a larger area to heat. Re-assess existing heating and upgrade the heat output if needed with a more powerful towel heater or radiator. You could also take the opportunity to include underfloor heating. At the same time, check that the water pressure isn’t affected by the addition of new sanitary ware.
Check materials are suited to a bathroom environment
Always choose materials that can withstand the conditions of a bathroom. From the best bathroom flooring to waterproof paints and sealed wall tiles, there are products designed to withstand high volumes of water.

DIY Bathroom Remodel: A Step-By-Step Guide
The bathroom is where most homeowners start and finish each day, but this frequently-used space is often overlooked when considering home improvements to make. Feeling embarrassed about your dated bathroom when guests come over to visit? We’ll help you remodel your bathroom while keeping costs low.
By going the do-it-yourself route, especially for gutting the bathroom, you can expect to save as much as a few thousand dollars. Other cost-saving tips for a bathroom renovation include limiting the use of expensive materials like tile and refinishing fixtures instead of buying new.
Follow these seven steps to complete a top-to-bottom bathroom remodel.
How to Plan for a Bathroom Renovation
Decide on Design Elements
Before you start remodeling the bathroom, choose a design that fits your vision, as well as your DIY skill set. There are many different ways to approach this project, ranging from repainting and swapping out the vanity to gutting the space and starting from scratch.
Here are a few details you absolutely need to nail down before you begin your bathroom renovation:
- Color scheme: Interested in a modern farmhouse look? Or are you looking for a clean, contemporary design to match the rest of your home decor? Find inspiration photos for your vision ahead of time to make sure your new bathroom tiles don’t clash with your choice of paint.
- New fixtures: Will you replace your shower or tub? Are you installing a new sink? Replacing one or both of these fixtures will add to your project’s timeline and budget.
- Storage spaces: Where will you keep your towels and toiletries post-remodel? If you’re removing a closet to expand the room, make sure you have shelving or cabinets to make up for the lost storage space in your bathroom.
- Location of utilities: Do you know where the electrical wiring and plumbing pipes are located? Keep these areas marked to avoid damaging these hookups and having to make expensive repairs.
Gather Your Tools
Beyond what’s already in your home improvement toolbox, there are some helpful tools to have on hand for a bathroom renovation.
Essential Tools and Supplies for a DIY Bathroom Remodel:
- Safety mask
- Gloves
- Goggles
- Caulking gun
- Silicone sealant
- Hammer
- Tape measure
- Spackle knife
- Spackle
- Stud finder
- Power drill
- Pry bar

Optional Tools We Recommend:
- Wet-dry Shop-Vac: Very handy in case any water spills while removing the toilet or another fixture.
- Cordless drill: Makes it easier to move around as you work and frees up your extension cord for other power tools.
These tools are available to rent at most home improvement stores for a minimal cost. You might even have a handy friend or family member who could let you borrow theirs.
How to Remodel a Bathroom in 7 Steps
1. Remove Bathroom Fixtures
Assuming you’re partially or totally renovating your bathroom, you’ll need to start by removing drywall and any fixtures you’re replacing. Gutting the bathroom yourself isn’t too difficult, but make sure to follow these steps to avoid any costly mistakes during the demolition phase.
Tips for Gutting a Bathroom:
- Start by shutting off the water, draining and removing the toilet to avoid any unpleasant spills.
- If you’re removing your bathtub, cover up the tub and start removing the bath tile down to the studs. This is necessary in order to rework the plumbing to fit your new shower or tub design.
- Remove the insulation from your walls where necessary. Do not use a hammer on insulation. Instead, use a reciprocating saw to cut out the panels. Wear a safety mask, gloves and goggles to avoid injuring yourself.
- Finally, remove the vanity, cabinets, mirror, flooring and any other features you plan to replace. When removing tile flooring, it’s a good idea to take off the baseboards and reinstall them after placing your new floor.
DIY Bathroom Remodeling Tip: Renting a dumpster for your demolition debris will allow you to dispose of everything at once without having to drive to the local dump, cutting hours off your cleanup time.
2. Install the New Shower or Tub
After you’ve gutted your bathroom, you can start installing your new fixtures. If there are any signs of rotting wood or water damage to your subfloor, you should replace it before installing your new shower to prevent further damage.
For a shower or tub replacement, you’ll want to pick a pan or basin that fits your new decor, as well as the space where your current tub sits. Basins usually come in a rectangular, square or pentangle (one corner cut off) shape. When choosing a base shape, make sure you the other features of your bathroom into account, including the location of the door.
You could also consider installing a combination shower and bath tub if you have the space. While walk-in showers are more appealing to many homeowners, it’s recommended to keep at least one tub in the house for resale value.
DIY Bathroom Remodeling Tip: Installing a walk-in shower is a stylish, space-saving update to make in any home. If you’re looking to replace your bathtub with a shower stall during your bathroom makeover, check out this guide on how to convert a tub into a walk-in shower.
3. Lay the New Flooring
After prepping your subfloor, you can start installing your new flooring. While tile is the most popular choice for bathrooms, you may consider other flooring materials like laminate or vinyl which are more affordable and DIY-friendly to work with.
If you choose tile, use a mason’s chalk line to mark reference lines perpendicular (at a 90-degree angle) to the wall with the longest continuous line. This will allow you to keep your tiles in a straight line as you place them throughout the room. Find more tips for laying bathroom floor tiles here.
4. Hang Drywall and Start Painting
The next step in your bathroom remodel is to hang your new drywall. This can be time-consuming, as you have to cut the new drywall to fit around your shower walls, vanity and other features. Once you start nailing up the boards, though, you should be able to get through this process quickly.
These are some important DIY bathroom remodeling tips to keep in mind during this step:
- Use drywall mud and tape to cover seams and fill in gaps.
- Use cement board instead of drywall for the shower/tub wall.
- Coat the cement board with Redgard or another waterproofing membrane to guard against water damage.
After you’ve put your walls back together, you can start adding some color to your bathroom. Painting the walls is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to freshen things up and give your space a whole new look. It’s best to use paint with a semi-gloss finish, which is easy to wipe down and resistant to mold and mildew.
DIY Bathroom Remodeling Tip: While you’re rehanging drywall and painting, it’s the perfect time to start retiling your shower and tub area if you plan to do so. Check out these handy tips to follow when tiling your bathroom walls or adding a backsplash.
5. Install Cabinets and Vanity
After you’ve taken care of the walls, you can bring in the vanity, cabinets and any other major items left on your bathroom renovation punch list.
Install the vanity first, including the sink and faucet. Once you have the drain hooked up to the faucet, you can move on to the other essentials such as the mirror, cabinets and trim around the shower or tub.
DIY Bathroom Remodeling Tip: Don’t have the budget for a new vanity? You can still renovate the room in a cost-effective way. Refinish and paint your existing bathroom cabinets, and add new hardware to achieve a brand-new look for less.
6. Update Lighting
Configure electrical fixtures and install your new lighting. If their dimensions are bigger or smaller than your current ones, you’ll need to adjust the wiring and potentially spackle around existing holes in the wall.
This step may involve moving the power outlets if your new vanity fills the space differently from what you had before. After all, you don’t want to be reaching down next to the toilet to plug in your hair dryer every day. You should call in an electrician for this step, especially if you have never worked with home wiring before.
7. Hook Up the Plumbing
At this point in the process, your bathroom actually resembles a bathroom, except for one thing: the toilet. You could reinstall your toilet or put in a new one earlier in the process, but leaving it for last helps you avoid chipping it while working on other areas of the bathroom.
Add the Finishing Touches to Your Newly-Remodeled Bathroom
Finally, you can install the trim around the room and start decorating. The trim is the capstone for every bathroom renovation as it provides the last bit of detail your space needs to feel complete. Add window treatments, decorative storage containers and pictures on the wall to personalize the room. Then, take a relaxing bath or shower and enjoy the new space you’ve worked so hard on!

Furnishing a bathroom in a private house is not a luxury, but a necessity
A modern approach to furnishing a bathroom in a private home is distinguished by careful selection of equipment, thoughtful design and concern for the health and comfort of loved ones. In all areas of life in a country house, convenience should come first. It’s time to forget about trying to wash yourself entirely in an enamel basin with lukewarm water.
The bathroom and the toilet are the rooms in the house where every member of the family visits at least once a day. A morning shower that gives strength for the upcoming working day, an evening relaxing bath before going to bed is a natural attitude of a modern person to a comfortable lifestyle.
In city apartments, bathrooms and toilets are usually small spaces. In most modern private houses, the area allows you to allocate enough spacious rooms for “amenities” to fulfill design fantasies.
Features of arranging a bathroom in a private house
Proper design of a bathroom and an equipped toilet is a guarantee of safety and convenience. A complex communication system, increased requirements for waterproofing, electrical wiring, the need to install equipment for heating and water heating – such problems face the owner of the house, who decides to equip a bathroom in a private house.
The choice of equipment for furnishing the bathroom depends on the available sewerage, water supply and heating systems. Sewerage can be shared or autonomous. There are many options for autonomous sewerage, and you need to choose the right system based on various factors: intensity of use, daily water consumption, soil, groundwater, climatic conditions.
If it is not possible to connect to the central water supply, then it will be necessary to think over the water supply system using a well or well. It is worth considering carefully the choice of all elements of the plumbing system: pipes, pumps, filters, control equipment.
Installation of a water heating system is a special issue in the arrangement of a bathroom in a country house. Water heaters can be powered by electricity or a heating boiler running on gas or diesel fuel. The required volume of the tank is calculated depending on the average consumption of hot water by all residents of the house per day. If there are a lot of people in the house and everyone likes to take a bath or often use the shower, a powerful flow heater will be required. Today, hot water in a private house is a common phenomenon, but it requires significant energy costs with intensive consumption.
If the size of the room allows, a bathtub or Jacuzzi can be installed here, and in addition to them a shower cabin. For the convenience of residents, other options are possible. For example, a shower on the first floor and a full bath on the second. Bathrooms in this case should be placed one above the other in order to avoid additional difficulties with laying communications. Making a bathroom combined or separate depends on the habits of family members and the capabilities of the house.
Bathroom in a private house – rational and beautiful
Having solved all the technical issues of arranging a bathroom and toilet in a private house, you can start designing the room, choosing the necessary equipment and interior items.
Modern industry offers a wide range of sanitary ware in all sizes, shapes and colors. Even for a small room, you can pick up a bath or shower. You can gain free space by installing a compact or corner sink. If the bathroom is combined, then you should pay attention to the toilet, which is attached to the wall. This will save space and make cleaning easier.
If a spacious room is allocated for the bathroom, then the choice of necessary equipment is greatly expanded. Here you can install a spacious bath or Jacuzzi for those who like to soak up the hot water. A sufficient amount of free space allows you to conveniently place a sink, toilet bowl, necessary pieces of furniture in the room. You can also install a washing machine here, if there is no desire or opportunity to equip a separate laundry room.
Ways to finish a bathroom in a private house
The choice of cladding material for the bathroom depends on the design preferences of the owners. To equip a bathroom in a wooden house, you can use wooden panels for wall and ceiling cladding, especially if the whole house is designed in a certain style, where wood is the main finishing material. To protect against moisture, the tree is treated with special compounds. However, it is better to tile the floor with ceramic tiles, since this area in the bathroom is most often in contact with water. Even thorough impregnation cannot perfectly protect a wooden floor from moisture penetration, which can lead to rotting, mold and loss of aesthetic properties.
In stone and brick houses, tiles are the traditional material for wall and floor cladding in the bathroom. The abundance of all kinds of color and texture options for facing tiles will help to implement any design decisions. When choosing a color design, it should be borne in mind that light shades visually expand the space, while dark ones can visually reduce the room. Mirrors and shiny surfaces also contribute to the effect of spaciousness. Successfully this role is performed by mirrored cabinet doors.
Moisture-resistant materials must be used to finish the ceiling. There are several options for a practical and not too expensive arrangement of the ceiling in the bathroom. This is the installation of a stretch ceiling made of plastic or plastic panels. The advantage of this type of finish is a slight reduction in the height of the room and the possibility of installing built-in lights. A more expensive option would be to install a false ceiling, but it looks much more aesthetically pleasing and elegant than the previous options. You can mount lighting fixtures in it, hide the wiring under it. The disadvantage is that the false ceiling significantly reduces the height of the room (15-20 cm).

Autistic child safety in the house: bathroom improvement. ~ Autism | ABA

Many people with autism spectrum disorders face common challenges, including sensory impairments, organizational and communication problems, and more. Unfortunately, standard family living arrangements can overstimulate, frighten, or upset such children, or be too restrictive for them.
Autistic children’s preferred activities and mechanisms for interacting with the environment may be unsafe for them and those around them, damage property, or annoy neighbors, for example. It is customary to label this “problematic behaviour”, although the real problem may be that home conditions do not meet the individual needs of autistic children.
In general, it is important to think about the following questions:
– Protect your child’s head as much as possible from injury in the event of a seizure, fall or suspected dangerous behaviour.
– Periodic epilepsy or severe tantrums involve the use of built-in or upholstered furniture without sharp corners or hard edges.
– Round corners on walls and countertops.
– Upholstered headboards and railings if necessary.
– Exclusion of places where the child is likely to get stuck (for example, between the head of the bed and the mattress, etc. )
– Elimination of access to chemical or toxic substances.
Bathroom modification: a solution to the most common problem in an autistic child’s home.
Bathroom changes are the most common need for families with autistic children. It’s safe to say that the more experience one gains in the field of childhood autism, the more stress and pressure builds up around bathroom fittings. Combining the activities that should take place in the bathroom (i.e. actual toileting, bathing and body care) with healing and therapeutic activities such as playing with water or immersing in water (“soaking”) can be challenging. . Bathrooms are subject to gradual decay from dampness, rust and mold. Water is also a risk of slips and falls, drowning or burns. Some of the standard “comfort items” in bathrooms are completely inapplicable in the case of children with autism. Over time, a list of changes was developed for bathrooms to make them a supportive environment for an autistic child.
Enough space. Cramped bathrooms can cause a child to become defensive and prevent participation in toileting or bathing. In some cases, insufficient space is the child’s only barrier to normal toileting. Often there is a need to reorganize the bathroom or add additional adjacent square meters to it in order to solve the problem of protective behavior in tactile contact, claustrophobia or sensory overload.
Security issues . Pay attention to safety issues such as slipping and falling, preventing burns, electric shocks and broken glass. Consider slip-resistant flooring, well-insulated electrical wiring, and tempered glass and mirrors.
Floor drain . Splashes of water make the floor slippery; its endless wiping for the safety of the child is a laborious process, for which there is not always enough time. The most effective way to control spilled water is to drain it. After installing the floor drain, splashed and spilled water will simply drain into the sewer. Installing such a drain is a simple and very useful modification that can have a significant impact on the comfort and safety of an autistic child in the bathroom.
Use wall-mounted . This is especially true in the case of the toilet. It is highly recommended to install wall-hung toilets with a barrel and flush mechanism mounted in the wall. Wall-mounted toilets free up floor space and provide legroom, which is important for comfort when assisting a child. Toilets without floor bases also make bathroom cleaning much easier.
Handrails and hangers. Most bathroom accessories are too fragile to hold on to, especially in a bathroom that is used a lot. Standard plumbing objects and handrails are also not always designed for non-standard activities and games, as well as helping to lift the child to his feet or keep him in a sitting position with each use. It is advisable to replace such handrails, along with towel racks, with stationary, strong metal handrails with permanent fixtures.
Openable windows and natural light . Bathrooms are not always located against exterior walls, but if possible, find a way to provide natural ventilation and natural light. This is necessary to create a healthy, open and pleasant bathroom environment for the child. Installing an exhaust fan may not meet all of the above requirements, however, if this is your only choice, try to find a powerful fan that produces the least amount of noise and vents the air outside.
Secondary heat sources . Underfloor heating, heat lamps and electric air heaters are the best solution for moisture control, mold and slip prevention. It also has the advantage of creating a welcoming environment in the bathroom for temperature sensitive children.

Plants in the bathroom – is it possible?
Contents

- 2. If there are no windows in the bathroom
- 3. Caring for plants in a bathroom without a window
- 4. If there is not enough additional lighting
- 5. Selection of plants for the interior bathroom
- 6. A few final tips
A bathroom decorated with flowers can be a great place to relax after a tiring day at work. Indoor plants will make even a small standard bathroom more attractive. But not all flowers will be able to grow in conditions of high humidity and lack of natural light.
Additional sources of artificial light will help partially solve the problem. However, these measures are sometimes not enough to meet the needs of plants. Does this mean that landscaping a bathroom is an almost impossible task? It all depends on the size and some features of the room.
Bathroom Plants with a Window
Spacious modern bathrooms today often have a large window that provides plenty of light and fresh air. In such conditions, almost any plant can be grown, except for those that, perhaps, do not tolerate high humidity at all.
Thanks to good ventilation in a bathroom with a window, there are no too sharp temperature changes, water does not stagnate here, mold and fungus do not develop. Therefore, such a bathroom is almost an ideal place for moisture-loving plants. Some species grow here even faster and better than in an ordinary room, for example, Dieffenbachia, Ficus, Cyperus. TO PHOTO: A window sill in a bathroom with a window is a great solution for moisture-loving plants!
Can be kept in a bathroom with a window and many flowering plants – Camellias, Hibiscus, Saintpaulia. True, when growing the latter, it must be borne in mind that they do not tolerate direct moisture on the leaves, so these flowers should be placed away from the sink, bath or shower. Various types of palm trees (Hovea, Hamedorea) are suitable for a spacious bathroom, on the floor of which these plants can be placed in large tubs or pots.
Care for plants in a bathroom with a window is almost the same as for those growing in other rooms. But due to the high humidity, the flowers here do not need to be sprayed. And the plants are usually watered once a week, sometimes less often – as the soil dries up. If warm floors are installed in the room, the substrate dries out faster, in this case, the frequency of watering is increased.
If there are no windows in the bathroom
More often than not, there is no window in the bathroom. Therefore, it will be difficult to grow even the most shade-tolerant and moisture-loving plants here. Without additional sources of lighting, any flower will die from a lack of light, or at least quickly lose its decorative appearance.
It is better to choose tropical plants for a small bathroom, for which high humidity, shading and temperature changes in the room are close to natural living conditions. Plants with plain dark green leaves are the easiest to tolerate the absence of the sun, while species with bright and variegated leaf blades lose all their attractiveness in artificial light.
In a standard windowless bathroom, flowers that need artificial lighting can take root: Tradescantia, Philodendron, Monstera, Aspidistra. One of the most unpretentious plants is Dracaena – some of its species are very shade-tolerant. Of the ampel varieties, the lack of light tolerates Scindapsus well.
Some orchids, such as the Phalaenopsis, can also be used as decorations in the bathroom with good long-term illumination. In the natural environment, these are epiphytic plants with aerial roots growing in humid forests on tree trunks. Bathroom conditions are quite suitable for them.

Plant care in a bathroom without a window
A bathroom without a window must be thoroughly ventilated . High humidity causes the appearance of fungus, mold, and some plant pests. The door of the room should be left open at night so that the room dries out. Walls and floors after hygiene procedures also need to be wiped dry.
You should also take care of additional light sources . You can use fluorescent lamps, having previously installed reflectors or screens on them to increase the illumination. Ideal illumination is provided by phytolamps, the radiation spectrum of which contributes to the growth and development of plants. The backlight should be turned on for at least 8 hours a day, the optimal duration of artificial daylight in the bathroom is 12-14 hours.
The leaves of the plants should be wiped with a damp sponge at least once a week, as they may be exposed to various chemicals usually stored in this room. Contamination of leaf blades with chemical agents interferes with the normal respiration of plants.
If there is not enough additional lighting
Plants in a windowless bathroom often suffer from a lack of light, even with additional light sources. The following signs may indicate this:0003
- The stems and leaves of flowers stretch out.
- New leaves grow smaller and duller than old ones.
- The lower leaves dry up and fall off.
- Apical buds do not develop.
- Flowers or buds fall off.
- Small, pale, dull flowers appear or no bloom at all.
- The plant stops growing.
If there are signs of a lack of sunlight, which usually appear 1.5–2 months after the transfer of the plant to the bathroom, it is better to move the pot to a more lit place.
Selection of plants for the interior of the bathroom
When choosing flowers, the size of the room is of great importance. Ampelous plants are ideal for small rooms: Philodendron (as well as Scindapsus or Roycissus) or some types of Saintpaulia. They do not take up precious floor space and can be used to beautifully decorate walls or cabinets. If the area allows, then a tub with a large plant, for example, Ficus or Monstera, looks good on the floor. TO PHOTOS: In a spacious bathroom, a single plant in a floor container looks particularly sophisticated
An important role in the selection of plants is played by the design of the bathroom. A pleasant contrast to the walls lined with light-colored tiles will be created by instances with a dark saturated color of the leaves. If wood predominates in decoration or accessories, it is better to place palm trees or ferns with openwork foliage indoors.
Some plants can be placed in the bath temporarily, for example only in the evening or during the flowering period. In the absence of direct sunlight, flowering continues for a longer period. After staying in the bathroom, the pots are transferred to a well-lit place and additional feeding is organized for the flowers.
Where should plants be placed?
The smaller the tub, the more difficult it is to arrange the plants so that they look nice. The easiest way is in the bathroom with a window – there the window sill will be the most successful place. But even in small rooms you can fit flowers into the interior.
The walls can be used for hanging flower pots. Wall shelves are also a good option for placing both ampelous and small plants. Bathroom design will become more interesting if you arrange the shelves in a checkerboard pattern. An ampelous plant on a shelf looks good in the corner of the room. PHOTOGRAPHED : Small plants in hanging pots save space in the bathroom
The floor is a great place for tree plants, small palms or any tall flowers. It is best to place flowers in the corner of the bathroom so that they do not interfere with approaching the shower, sink, bath.
Wardrobes can be used if the bathroom is too small to accommodate special plant shelves. Hanging or small specimens are usually placed on the top of the cabinet. A good place for lush flowers of medium size can be a small cabinet.
Where should flowers not be placed?
Planters should not be installed where they can be easily dropped or damage to plants – on the sink, washing machine, bath tub, near the shower. It is necessary to select a place for flowers in such a way that detergents, cleaners or cosmetics that are often used in the bathroom do not get on them.
A few final tips
- For the bathroom, try to choose plants from the tropics – they are usually more resistant to high humidity and lack of light.
- Do not put too many plants in the bathroom. In a small room, one large flower or two to three small ones is enough.
- Moderate watering will keep the flowers from root rot. The humidity in the bathroom is already high, therefore, even moisture-loving species will need to be watered less often than usual.
- If cosmetics or household chemicals come into contact with the leaves of the plant, immediately wipe them with a damp sponge.

Features in a new building
- For obvious reasons, dismantling work is excluded, so the main task for workers will be the maximum leveling of all surfaces, including floors and ceilings. The ideal geometry of the walls is the best friend for facing tiles of any type and size.
- Installation of communications must be carried out in accordance with the design project, which should also indicate the equipment planned for use in the future. It can be a washing machine, a shower cabin, etc.
- Very expensive repairs in the first year of the “life” of the house should not be done, as its shrinkage will affect the results of the work, dampen the mood and cause waste. The best way out will be an inexpensive tile, which will not be a pity to remove after 3 – 4 years.
By the way, the only disadvantage when repairing a bathroom in a new building is the installation of utilities. The pluses include the ability to create a room of any design, and at the same time no dismantling work.
Repair steps
- Cement floor screed
- Wall and ceiling leveling
- Installation of utilities
- Installation of external electrification elements
- Bathroom tiling
- Plumbing installation
As a rule, a bathroom in a new building is combined with a bathroom, so all you have to do on this point is to choose the appropriate plumbing equipment, and everything else has already been described above. The cost of repairs will depend on the area of the bathroom, the volume and complexity of the work being done. The amount of total costs will primarily be affected by the cost of the materials used in the repair.

Bathroom in a wooden house
Bathroom planning
The most favorable area for the bathroom should be determined immediately, when drawing up a project. Most often, its location is complex and is interconnected with other rooms. And those, in turn, also rationally, to save money, are connected to the sewerage and water supply.
In cases where there are no special restrictions in the means for arranging internal communications, the convenient use of the bathroom comes to the fore, then it is planned close to the sleeping quarters and dressing room.
In two-story houses, several sanitary facilities can be planned, and they can be located not only on the first, but also on the second floor. Large families will especially benefit from this. It is worth noting that in two-story houses, sanitary facilities are located one above the other, which is mostly associated with the installation of a sewer riser.
If you still want a bath on the second floor in a wooden house, then you should pay special attention to calculating the load on the floor. For a cast-iron bathroom, this is especially true, because cast-iron products weigh quite a lot. And if you fill the bathroom with water, then the load on the interfloor ceiling increases by 2-2.5 times.
For the bathroom on the second floor, it is desirable to use acrylic bathtubs or abandon them in favor of a shower cabin.
For these reasons, the overlap should be made as reliable as possible. And for this, you need to reduce the step between the beams, while increasing their thickness, compared with the rest of the sections. It is advisable to make the floor in the bathroom a little lower than the level of the floors in other rooms. This will make your home less likely to flood.
After you decide where the bathroom will be, calculate its area, you will need to schematically distribute plumbing equipment on the drawing. Decide where the toilet, sink and bath will be installed. In this way, it will become easier for you to determine the scheme for laying engineering communications.
After the floor in the bathroom, you need to take care of the walls, as splashes of water can fall on a log or timber, and this is not desirable. The traditional use of ceramic tiles, panels in the bathroom at home using shrink technology is somewhat problematic, since vertical movements are possible when humidity changes.
Bathroom waterproofing value
Wood is one of the most environmentally friendly materials used in construction, but its main disadvantage is its low resistance to moisture. Thus, it should be noted that waterproofing is almost a key part of the process of finishing work on a bathroom in a wooden house. To provide greater protection to the internal structure of a wooden building, different methods can be used.
The first step is to ensure that moisture does not penetrate the bathroom floor. It will stop the spread of moisture to other places. First, the floor is covered with bituminous insulation or cement mortar. The choice of the future subfloor will depend on the bearing capacity of the floor. The structure needs to be strong enough to carry the weight of the grout, flooring and plumbing. Otherwise, we advise you not to take risks and use bituminous mastic or similar material.
This issue is especially relevant for the bathroom on the second floor of a log house, when the ceiling is also made of wood.
As soon as the material dries, it is necessary to lay a layer of waterproofing, most often rolled material. Nowadays, waterproofing films are distinguished by their strength property, as well as their durability. Heat loss in winter is reduced to a minimum, the air is passed through much better, and it also completely retains steam and moisture. A floor covering is laid on top of the roll film.
In addition to the common waterproofing film, to isolate the floor from water in the bathroom of a wooden house, they do:
- Cast insulation. The floor is filled with material melted to a liquid state. Thus, soft protection is provided. For rooms with a high load, this method is not very suitable.
- Paint. The method stands out for its simplicity and economy. True, it will periodically be required to update it.
- Impregnation. Makes wood more sustainable and durable.
- Coating materials. The central component of waterproofing mixtures is bitumen. Such mixtures are applied in layers, and certain periods of time should be maintained between sets.
It is important to remember that before using a coating waterproofing, you need to make sure that the wooden boards are dry, because wet wood begins to deteriorate from the inside.
As a rule, many cannot decide how to protect the tree in the bathroom in a wooden house. The ideal option for you would be a combination of materials. Roll film can be used on flat areas of the floor, and paint on hard-to-reach areas.
The traditional solution for a bathroom floor made of ceramic tiles or porcelain stoneware in a wooden house can also be implemented, but it is more difficult to do. The main task will be to provide a rigid base for the floor.
For waterproofing vertical surfaces, you can use the following options:
1) Upholstery with polyethylene film. Pretty easy to do by hand. You only need to cut off the required amount of film and, using a construction stapler, attach it to the wall. In addition, it is very important to create a high-quality ventilation system. The method is primitive and not very aesthetic.
2) Treatment with a water-repellent solution. Woodworking helps the walls retain their original appearance. The problem is that this method does not protect well from large flows of water, for example from a shower.
3) Installation of plastic panels. The simplest and fairly cheap solution for protecting walls from moisture. It would seem that it is simpler, but the log house is subject to shrinkage, and with increasing humidity there may be a slight rise. Vertical panels in this case will warp, for this reason they cannot be attached directly to a wooden wall.
4) An independent internal frame for finishing in the bathroom and other wet zones is, perhaps, the only or the best solution to the problem of waterproofing the walls of the bathroom of any wooden house, including log houses.
Shrinkage log house and bathroom
Definitely a big problem that appears when building a house from a bar or a log of natural moisture is the shrinkage of a log house, which is most evident in the bathroom. In potentially wet rooms, frequent changes in moisture and temperature are possible. It is here that the vertical mobility of the frame is maximum.
Dry wood is a rather light building material, its natural weight, quite possibly, will not be enough to prevent deformations, in particular on the upper crowns. This problem is solved with the help of special spring shrinkage compensators. The compensator is a spring-loaded anchor, which is installed vertically inside a beam or log, and provides a constant contraction of the two elements with a certain force. The node does not require any maintenance.
It will ensure the uniformity of shrinkage of the structure of their tree, reduce the amount and time required for shrinkage, and the installation of expansion joints will reduce to zero deformations and voids. You can take on the interior decoration after three months from the moment when the assembly of the log house was started. The shrinkage of houses is not often the same. Its degree depends on the size of the building, the time required for its construction, the required wood material.
In the situation with a log of natural humidity of log houses, the situation is somewhat different. The log has bulges and has a greater weight per unit of height, in addition, its moisture content is higher than when using chamber drying materials. As a result, the chopped log shrinks under its own weight, but for finishing work it is necessary to wait 9- 12 months.
In both cases, the problem is the use of vertical elements, since shrinkage along the length occurs to a lesser extent than in the diameter of the log (width and height of the beam). For supporting elements, special adjustable expansion joints are used, and internal frame partitions are installed only after complete shrinkage.
Variants of realization of bath walls in a wooden house
Decorating the walls of a bathroom in a wooden house, especially in a log house, with wallpaper, plaster, and tile is extremely difficult. This is due to the features of shrinkage technology. In fact, the walls can only be painted.
However, it is possible to prepare a special frame on which sheets of moisture-resistant drywall will be attached, sometimes it can be replaced by OSB panels or other materials.
Such a frame is completely or partially independent of the main wall. It is not affected by shrinkage processes. For this reason, you can carry out a traditional bathroom finish.
Ceramic tiles in the bathroom of a wooden house, as a rule, are lined with the lower part of the walls to a height of 1.5 – 1.7 m. Then either lining is used or the log house is left open. It does not make sense to completely abandon the use of wood in the interior. For the upper part of the walls, wallpaper and plaster can be applied.
From all this, a very beautiful room is obtained, which has its own style. Full closure of the walls is mandatory, provided that their appearance, so to speak, is not very attractive. In particular, this applies to houses that were built a long time ago and already have many cracks.
When finishing the bathroom, which is located in the attic, the walls are finished with plasterboard, and the rafters and beams can be left open – this will look especially attractive. In the case of an insulated roof, when the rafters are closed, a board finish would be a good solution.
Independent frame in bathroom
A feature of the independent frame for finishing the wet area in the bathroom is the absence of its attachment to the outer wall. It is made with increased rigidity and is self-supporting. Often implemented with ordinary brickwork inside the log house. As a result, such a wall takes on the entire water load.
Naturally, such a frame can also be made from other materials, for example, a metal profile for drywall, followed by sheathing with moisture-resistant plasterboard or gypsum fiber board, cement particle board and other materials, on top of which ceramic tiles can be mounted without any difficulties.
The main advantage of this implementation is the absolute independence from shrinkage. The main disadvantage is the need to indent from a wooden wall and sufficient thickness to ensure load-bearing capacity. As a result, the loss of a sufficiently large space in the bathroom.
Sliding frame in log cabin bathroom
The essential difference between a sliding frame and an independent frame is space saving and the ability to hide the gap between the finished surface and the outer wall. This version of the frame is held by fastening to the main wall, which is subject to shrinkage, but the attachment point passes through an elongated hole through which the fasteners can slide during the shrinkage of the log house.
The sliding frame is made of timber or a metal profile for drywall. And in the upper part, between the main ceiling and the frame ceiling, leave a shrinkage gap of 10-15 cm. This will depend on the height of the room.
If the installation is made on a log, then vertical grooves are made to compensate for the bulge of the log. It is problematic to use fasteners for a metal profile in a log cabin, for this reason, experienced carpenters do not use metal to make partitions and sliding frames, but use all the same wood – bars with longitudinal holes through which they are attached to the log house.
Lacing (surfacing) the walls in the bathroom
In some cases, in a log house in some rooms, work can be done to level the plane of the wall, that is, the bulges of the log are removed. So they make a kind of gun carriage only on one side. In ancient Russian architecture they were called “wall in las”.
What does this procedure give? It has two important meanings, the order of which everyone determines for himself.
- Leveling the wall for ease of hanging or placing furniture (much easier on a flat wall).
- An increase, albeit a slight one, of the space inside.
Knocking off the ledges of logs
wall alignment result
At the same time, rarely does something good come without a fly in the ointment. As a result, the most dense layers of wood are cut down and cracks begin to form precisely on the leveled part of the log. At the same time, the diameter of the log also decreases.
Wood glazing
Glazing is a method that consists in the fact that linseed oil, drying oil or other translucent paints are applied to the surface of the product. This method makes it possible to obtain a transparent surface of the wood product. Usually, the glazing method is used to finish such tree species as: ash, pine, cedar, oak and larch.
Glazing of different types of wood
Before glazing a tree, you need to prepare its surface by cleaning it of dust, removing dirt and degreasing it. Drying oil and oil from flax in their purified form are usually not used: these substances must be diluted with turpentine in a ratio of 70 to 30. A hot mixture is applied to the surface that needs treatment with a soft brush or swab in several steps. Intermediately, between the application of layers, it is necessary to dry and sand each layer properly.
Glazing paints, glazes, also create a translucent coating that allows you to protect the wood from moisture. At the same time, the texture of wood is preserved, and its color can be changed, giving a richer look.
Glazing in the bathroom is suitable for places where there is no constant contact with water. At the same time, the presence of wooden surfaces creates a special mood in the interior.

Bathroom tiles
It is necessary that the finishing materials for the walls and floor of the bathroom can easily withstand temperature changes and high humidity. For this reason, tile has a high popularity among other finishing materials.
A non-standard way of layout and an interesting combination of colors and textures can easily change the proportions of the room. In small rooms, it is better to use small tiles in order to visually make the space inside wider. Also, tiles help to smooth out the disadvantages of the layout. A variety of textures offered by manufacturers will perfectly emphasize the style of your interior.
Another positive quality of the tile is its ease of maintenance. The smooth surface is easily cleaned from soap deposits and residues of cleaning products. With good care, a tiled bathroom will bring you nothing but joy. It remains only to enjoy this comfort.
The use of internal frames allows you to successfully use ceramic tiles for the bathroom.
Floor in the bathroom of a wooden house
Shower cabin in the bathroom of a wooden house
The need for the bathroom is the arrangement of an additionally reinforced floor. A constant load has a negative effect on the tree, in particular when it is located in a place of high humidity. And in the bathroom, where the bath water creates a lot of mass and stresses the beams, the risk of early deterioration of the floor is increased.
For this reason, reinforced logs are placed in the bathroom floor. These boards are distinguished by an increased cross-section. All these difficulties can be avoided if the bathroom is located on the first floor, and the floor is made not on wooden logs, but on concrete.
Materials are well suited for the bathroom floors of a wooden house: tiles, mosaics, linoleum, moisture-resistant laminate, wood, porcelain stoneware.
Porcelain tile is most often laid on bathroom floors. Sufficiently durable and outwardly beautiful material, it is not demanding for special efforts during care, it perfectly tolerates interaction with moisture and household chemicals. For the installation of porcelain stoneware, it is simply necessary to make a screed of sand and cement.
Such materials can only be laid on a stable and perfectly level floor, and wooden boards do not meet these requirements. Before making a screed, you need to make the floor overlap stronger. Otherwise, due to the fact that the load also comes from cement, the floor may well fail.
At this stage, you need to take up the installation of underfloor heating, of course, if they were planned. It is also required to install two-layer insulation under the screed to prevent moisture from affecting the subfloor. And then, after all the preparatory work has been carried out, it will be possible to lay the finishing material.
Wood can help create an overall style, so using it may be appropriate. It is necessary to choose such types of wood so that the floor can last as long as possible. Teak, for example, is very well suited to cover the field. Teak is relatively cheap, and the oils that make up the wood increase its moisture resistance. After completing the installation of such a floor, it is necessary to fill each slot with a specialized sealant.
Also a good option, as a floor for the bathroom, will be larch, because it has good resistance to moisture. Another option can be a thermowood, it is processed with hot steam in a vacuum, by the way, it is not exposed to mold. You can not do a screed on a wooden floor. You can get away with laying a moisture-proof coating.
Bathroom ceiling
As a rule, the ceiling in the bathroom of a wooden house is suspended – from moisture-resistant GVL, it is puttied, then painted. You can make it stretch, aluminum rack, PVC panels, hem with a well-finished board. It is important to prevent steam from entering the ceiling. For these purposes, vapor-impermeable membranes are taken. The membranes are often attached to the ceiling with staples of a construction stapler.
The central task during the installation of a vapor barrier is to create tightness. To make this possible, the material is placed on the walls, the membrane strips are overlapped and glued twice with double-sided tape. In addition, it is worth gluing all the places where the fasteners are installed with adhesive tape. Conscientiousness of performance of works is obligatory.
The next component is providing a good microclimate – high-quality ventilation. In the bathroom of a wooden house, ventilation is necessary both natural and, let’s say, forced, that is, with a fan. In this case, the fan in the sanitary unit will start working when natural ventilation cannot cope with its work.
Bathroom layout ideas
Quite a few interesting ways can be thought of in order to choose the location of the future bathroom. For example, if you live in a house that consists of two floors, a convenient solution would be to place the bathroom next to the bedroom. An attic bathroom is also a good option.
Often you can find a bathroom combined with a bathroom, but often this option is not considered convenient. To use a joint sanitary unit at the same time by a couple of people, it is possible to put a partition in it or get by with a beautiful curtain. It is often advised to leave a separate room under the bathroom, all this is done so that there is no unnecessary furniture left in it, which will be subject to high humidity.
The bathroom needs as much space as possible. The best solution would be to choose a room without windows. For this room, they are redundant. But, in the case when there is still a window, you need to choose curtains made of dense materials, put blinds on the windows, or maybe opt for some other way to hide your loved ones from prying eyes.
Wooden house bathroom design
Classic. This style does not cease to be relevant and does not lose public interest in itself. The classic is replete with its decorative elements, lines so smooth and as if flowing from one to another and overly decorated furniture. This style is well suited for a decent-sized mirror, about human height, in a thick wooden frame, and indeed wooden furniture.
Minimalism. The polar opposite of the classics. Furniture is used critically little, and even that includes only the most necessary. The severity of lines and the accuracy of forms – that’s what characterizes minimalism. Monochromatic, light, calm colors are used.
Country. Warm colors and wooden furniture are used. This style looks good in the bathroom as it is elegant and quite simple.
Antique. In a wooden house, such a design will look very profitable and harmonious. Emphasis is placed on the choice of curtains with a floral pattern, made of heavy fabrics, shabby wooden furniture, pastel shades are used in the design.
Modern. An interesting design for decorating a room, modern combines clarity and lightness of lines. Its elements are often repeated, as well as modern materials are used, a certain harmony is formed between beauty and convenience.
High tech. It is assumed the use of glass, as well as steel and wood elements. A characteristic feature of hi-tech is its non-standard forms. It is very pleasant to spend time in a room made in this style.
For many people who live in wooden houses, it is often quite difficult to find a good material for finishing the bathroom, such that it ensures the reliability of its use. The specificity of the premises leads to the fact that the desire to make it beautiful should border on the desire to make it resistant to moisture and aggressive chemicals. And if you want to comply with both points, then a tile will be an excellent option for you, the reliability of this material is undeniable, and a huge selection of tiles and a variety of textures, shapes and sizes will allow you to choose exactly what you need.
However, fixing ceramic tiles is possible only on a “stable” wall, and houses using log shrinkage technologies are not. There is a need to mount an additional frame for the interior decoration of the bathroom.
Inserting a beam for a frame into a wall
Shower cubicle with frame inset into the wall
We have already mentioned two types of frameworks used: independent and sliding. For their independent implementation, it is necessary to understand the design features. Another difficulty is the height of the shrinkage. If you plan to make the frame and trim yourself, then do not try to tile the bathroom to the ceiling.
It would be much more reasonable to raise it to a maximum of 2 meters, and leave the top wooden. This eliminates the need to take into account shrinkage.
An independent framework is easiest to implement in two ways. In the first case, if there is a base with a large bearing capacity, for example, one of the types of slab foundation and the first floor. In such a situation, it is easiest to make brickwork in the wet area of \u200b\u200bthe bathroom. The main thing is to indent from the most protruding log (with a beam the situation is simpler) 3 – 5 centimeters.
If the floor is wooden, then it is better to mount a metal frame from a wall profile for drywall. The main thing is to ensure sufficient rigidity of the structure.
The sliding frame is attached to the wall, which is movable. It is necessary to maintain this mobility, but also to ensure a good pairing.
Consider the installation of a metal frame.
- we mark the points of attachment of the profiles to the wall, then we make vertical cuts at the junction points.
- the groove must be vertical in two planes
- in width, the groove must include a profile, two layers of drywall or other sheet material on each side, for a log, ceramic tiles must also be included, but it is better to do this for timber; in addition, you need to leave gaps of 3-5 mm for free sliding.
- profiles are fixed to the wall with hangers so that the profile slides without effort, but does not dangle freely.
- if partitions are needed perpendicular to the main wall, then horizontal profile guides are laid on the floor, intermediate vertical wall profiles are set in increments of 60, preferably 40 centimeters, and fastened on top with a horizontal guide profile.
- the frame is sewn with two layers of drywall, gypsum board or other material with overlapping seams;
- After the partitions have been made, ceramic tiles are laid on them.
In log houses, carpenters prefer to make a frame from timber. For fastening to the wall in the latter, through longitudinal holes are made with a milling cutter, through which the beam is attached to the crowns with capercaillie screws with a washer, so that there is free vertical movement. If the house has just started shrinking, then the screw is fixed in the upper quarter, and if the installation is carried out after shrinkage, then in the center.
Moisture resistant sheet material is attached to the frame. Moisture-resistant drywall has a special priority. It is fixed in two layers – all this is done to increase the bearing capacity and for better reinforcement, both heat and vapor barrier. Even before laying the sheets of the second row, the joints of the first are puttied, and the GKL itself is placed in such a way that the seams of the two rows do not match.
However, GKL is an imperfect base, for the reason that both gypsum and cardboard are hygroscopic, and their ability to absorb moisture is reduced by impregnation. This means that for even greater reliability, moisture-resistant GKL is impregnated with an additional protective compound. An example is FLACHENDICHT (Flehendicht) – a waterproofing designed directly for waterproofing GVL and other gypsum bases.
It is also possible to use an aquapanel from Knauf. These panels are made according to the same principle as the gypsum board, only the core is cement with filler, and the “wrap” is fiberglass. Both aquapanels and GVL are not afraid of moisture, even without pre-treatment. Their difference lies in the fact that they are made perfectly even, without notches along the edges, which are present in the GKL. They are joined end-to-end, a specially designed adhesive composition is applied to the joined edges. At the end of the installation, the surface becomes even, and is ready to continue finishing. Even putty becomes redundant. It is worth noting that one side of the aquapanel is made even – for painting or wallpapering, and the second side is rough – for laying tiles.
And also as a base for tiles on the walls in a house made of timber or logs, it is possible to use moisture-resistant plywood. They are fastened similarly – to the frame. The gaps in the seams are left the same, in the future they are filled with silicone non-drying sealant.
The use of sliding frame bases for tiles allows you to get away from the need for a gap from the log house, where dust will accumulate. At the same time, for their independent implementation, a skill is needed so that everything turns out smoothly and accurately.
Bathroom in a private house – 105 photos of creating a style with your own hands
Bathroom in a private house: beautiful arrangement, best design and competent layout (105 photos)
Throughout the history of its development, a person unconsciously, and often consciously reaching for comfort. In Russia, we have an understanding that such comfort occurred only with the start of mass construction of comfortable housing in cities. The emergence of a free market for building materials made it possible to join the comfort of the numerous inhabitants of private houses in suburban towns, villages and villages.
In general, comfortable housing is housing in which the notorious amenities are located in a warm room inside the house, and not somewhere on the street in a wooden box. This is when in order to wash, you do not need to heat the bath, in winter it takes a whole day, so the bath in the village happens either on Sunday or on a big holiday, when in order to wash, you do not need to take absenteeism from work.
Today you can improve your home even in the most remote village. Moreover, true comfort these days is possible only in an individual private house built according to one’s own project.
As you know, our apartments are not very spacious, as for non-residential premises, such as: bathroom, toilet and kitchen, their area is so small that the owners have to show miracles of ingenuity in order to comfortably place in these premises everything without which they don’t make sense at all.

Bathroom on an individual project
Another thing is your house. The rules of modern bathroom design in the house say that bathrooms designed according to individual projects are not much different from a city apartment, except for more spacious rooms.
If the project of the house was created taking into account the wishes of its owner, then he can initially do everything in it exactly the way he wants and it will be convenient for him, and not for anyone at all.
If the living rooms in the house can be located anywhere, then the bathroom and kitchen should be located where it is most convenient to carry out engineering systems.
The construction of an individual sewerage system must be carried out taking into account the requirements of the SES, which states that the toilet should be located at a distance of no closer than 25 meters from a well or well. In reality, this rule is not always followed.
But even if, according to the project, the cesspool is located at a closer distance from the source of drinking water, you should not despair, it is enough to install a septic tank instead of a simple cesspool and the problem will be solved. The only thing to remember is the location of the septic tank, it must be installed in a place where a sewage truck can easily drive up to it.
The sewer pipe leading from the house to the septic tank must be large enough in diameter, at least 15-20 cm, and located at an acute angle so that sewage flows freely through it into the septic tank.
The pipe that has been brought out must be taken into a wooden or brick box, having previously wrapped it with a thick layer of mineral wool. Such a precaution will avoid freezing of the pipe in the winter.
Problems of arranging a bathroom in a private house
Having decided on the place of the sewer outlet, it will be possible to say quite definitely where the kitchen, bathroom and toilet will be located. All these rooms should be spacious enough, especially the bathroom. I must say that this is where all the advantages of an individual house in terms of arranging a bathroom end and problems begin.
Buying a city apartment, a person also buys a bathroom, albeit small and not very comfortable, but absolutely ready for use.
In your separate house, you have to deal with the arrangement of the bathroom yourself. Due to its very small size, the bathroom is perhaps the warmest room in the entire apartment.
How to deal with fungus in the bathroom
Designers initially plan the small size of the bathroom so that it best retains the heat generated not only by radiators, but also by hot water. Since the bathroom is used for taking water procedures, this room is almost constantly under the influence of moisture, which inevitably leads to the appearance of mold on the walls, floor and ceiling.
To prevent this, regularly ventilate the bathroom. Since the bathroom in a private house is created according to an individual project, unlike standard rooms of this type, you can well plan a window in it that can be opened to ventilate the bathroom and dry the room. In principle, you don’t need to make a window in the bathroom; it will be enough to cut an outlet in the ceiling.
If this is not enough, you can install an extractor in the bathroom by inserting it into the vent. The volume of the room in a standard bathroom is small and it heats up very quickly.
By wishing for a larger bathroom, we not only gain additional space, but also the additional problem of insulating and heating it. If the bathroom is not warm enough, then a cold is not far away.
Bathroom heaters
Materials such as mineral wool, polystyrene or cork can be used as insulation. The most preferred of all is mineral wool. It absorbs moisture well, so it must be covered with a layer of waterproofing before use.
Styrofoam holds heat very well, but is too brittle, so care must be taken when decorating walls and ceilings with it. Cork thermal insulation of the walls and ceiling in the bathroom is made by gluing cork plates.
Bathroom heating
Having allocated a large room for the bathroom, you must also take care of its additional heating. The best solution to this problem would be to install a double-circuit gas or electric boiler.
Double-circuit boiler is a combined water heater and heating system. A gas boiler in operation is much cheaper than an electric one and does not require any modifications to the gas supply system. However, despite the fact that our country is a gas giant, far from all our territories are gasified.
Wealthy citizens of our country living in these areas do not face the cost, prefer to install electric heating systems and not fiddle with solid fuel boilers that need to be cleaned daily before being fired.
Electric boiler is the most convenient of all. It turns on once in the fall, after which it can not be turned off until spring, only sometimes by adjusting the temperature of the coolant, that is, the water in the boiler. The electric boiler has its drawbacks.
A sufficiently powerful electric boiler, like an electric stove, requires connection to a three-phase network, which ordinary houses are not provided with, in addition, electricity is the most expensive form of energy.
However, no matter how hard we try to heat the bathroom, the floor in the bathroom of a private house, if it is not specifically insulated, will still remain cold. In order to insulate the floor, polystyrene is often used, which serves as a good thermal insulator. Today, the so-called warm floors are gaining more and more popularity.
Underfloor heating
Underfloor heating is such because it is artificially heated by electrical thermoelements woven into the grid. The mesh is flexible and easy to cut. The element woven into it is a tubular flexible electric heater stretched over the area of the entire grid.
In contrast to the thermocouple, the mesh can be cut and bent over the entire floor area, after the warm floor is laid, it is connected to the mains. Laminate slabs, linoleum, parquet or any other coating are laid on top of the warm floor.
Choice of sanitary ware for the bathroom
Once the flooring is done, it’s time to think about installing the bathtub. Multiple photos of bathrooms in private houses eloquently indicate that the non-standard bathroom in a private house is almost always much larger than the area of a standard bathroom in a city apartment, and the plumbing installed in it can also be much larger than usual.
It is unlikely that anyone would install a sitz bath in the bathroom of their own home. People build their own houses in the suburbs not to arrange a corner of Soviet life in them, but, for example, to make a bathroom in a private house, turning it into a relaxation room and soak up the jacuzzi.
