How to Keep Piles of Clothes Off The Floor and All Over Your Room

Custom closet storage can help you get—and more importantly, keep—piles of clothes and laundry off the floor and in their proper places.

We all have the same problem when it comes to clothes—they have an irrepressible tendency to end up in piles. We pile clothes on our closet floor, atop our dressers, in the bathroom, on a chair—almost any flat surface will do. But in my opinion, clothes clutter and dirty clothes on the floor is the worst clutter of all. A pile of clothes makes a room instantly feel dirty and unkempt, and seems to take forever to tackle appropriately.

In order to address this common concern, we first have to understand where our particular problem lies. Look at the clothes you have in piles. Are they:

  • Clean clothes you decided not to wear?

  • Dirty clothes you didn’t put in the hamper?

  • Clean clothes you haven’t yet folded and put away?

  • Clothes you wore once and want to wear again sometime soon?

  • Clothes that can’t be laundered with the rest (hand wash or dry clean only)?

Once you’ve figured out which problems plague your wardrobe the most, you’ll be able to address each of them in turn with a standard plan of action. Start with a great custom closet, use the tools you have, and address unwanted behaviors. Before you know it, you’ll have a living space that’s completely clear of piles of clothing and clutter.

A Functional Closet Keeps Clothes Off The Floor

In most cases where piles of clothing are a severe issue, the closet is the primary culprit. If you struggle to wrench the closet door open because it’s so stuffed with clothing, that’s a neon sign that something is wrong. Finding the clothes you want shouldn’t have to cause twenty different items to fall off their hangers onto the floor or tangle up with countless other wardrobe pieces. And of course, few things are more frustrating than having to shove four feet of hanging clothes aside to get to the dress or suit you wanted, only to find that it’s wrinkled beyond recognition and you have to throw it in the “to be washed” pile and start all over.

A traditional single-rod-and-shelf setup is usually to blame for such an infernal mess. Yes, you may have too many clothing items in general—but if you could double the available space in your closet, it would make a huge difference.

Creating more closet space is actually very simple with a custom organization system. As designers, we can add dual hanging rods, wardrobe lifts, and customized shelving that runs to the ceiling. Designate one space for each type of clothing, and voilà—everything suddenly has a home. Getting the slacks you want to wear becomes much less of a hassle with custom cabinetry on your side.

Use Your Accessories For Good

If you’re like my best friend, every hook in your home is covered with five or six items of clothing that constantly fall to the floor when you pass by. Luckily, a custom closet comes with accessories that are specifically designed to help you (and your wardrobe) function better. No longer will stray hooks and over-the-door hangers become the monsters of your clutter nightmares. With custom cabinetry, you can:

  • Install a tilt-out hamper for dirty laundry and a separate one for dry cleaning or hand washing. This way, your nicest items don’t end up living on your floor for months at a time while you wait to accumulate a full load.

  • Keep a closed-off bin on a singular shelf somewhere out of the way that you designate for donations. When an item no longer suits your needs, throw it in there. It will remain out of sight until you’re ready to make a run to your local Goodwill.

  • Install three small and sturdy hooks somewhere discreet inside your closet (and no, we don’t mean on the back of your closet door). If you’re partial to re-wearing clothes, these three individual spots are your go-to. Make these hooks small enough that you can’t hang an entire week’s worth of blouses from each of them.

  • Use a valet rod to lay out your planned outfit for the next day or to store the items you reach for most. I keep my cozy robe there for the nights when I get out of my work clothes and just want to relax at home.

Build New and Healthy Habits

As humans, we are prone to developing what psychologists call “pairings.” When we walk in the door, we automatically take off our shoes. When we finish a meal, we put our dishes in the sink without even thinking about washing them. We enter our closets to change clothes and throw whatever we’re wearing straight on the floor. Pairings like these are bad habits that can build up a lot of clutter in a short amount of time.

It’s time to make newly beneficial pairings that will help your space stay clean and organized. When you walk in the closet, make a habit of either hanging up the clothes you take off or placing them directly in the correct hamper. Organize your clothing by category or season, and replace each item exactly where it came from. Acquire enough hangers for every item of clothing so that you don’t have to shuffle around every week. Before you know it, these habits will get your clothes off the floor and where they belong, ready to wear again.

Know Where to Start

With a beautifully designed custom closet, functional accessories, and a handful of new good habits, you’ll be all set to tackle your clothing clutter once and for all. It’s actually quite simple to get everything in its place, perfectly, as long as you know where to start. And custom closet design can be the impetus that gets your organization game going strong.

My Secret For Keeping Clothing Off Our Bedroom Floor

When you get home for the day, what do you do with the clothes you wore? Do you throw them all straight into the laundry basket, hang them over a chair or pile them on the floor?

I’ve always struggled with this when it comes to clothing I want to re-wear.

I don’t really want to put my clothing back in the drawer, but I don’t necessary want to wash it either. This has always confused me. There needs to be a place for clothes that are in between wears, like the sweatpants I wear every night for a week straight or the jeans I wear multiple times in a weekend.

Since I’m not sure where to put these things, they often end up in a pile on the floor next to my dresser. And I don’t know about you, but it stresses me out to walk into a messy bedroom with clothes sprawled all over the place.

When I get home from work and head to our bedroom to change out of my work clothes, my mood instantly changes to reflect the state of our room. If the bed is messy and the floor is littered with odd socks and shirts, I immediately feel more stressed and moody. But if I walk into a room with a neatly made bed and a clean floor, I feel myself start to relax. Our environment affects our mood greatly, and keeping things organized can definitely help keep the stress at bay.

So when we set out to complete our bedroom makeover, I knew I needed a solution to organize my bedroom that would keep our clothing off the floor.

The organizing solution: hooks!

During our bedroom makeover, I set out to redecorate and organize my bedroom. One way I did this was by adding a row of sturdy hooks to the back of our bedroom door, and another row of hooks to the inside of a closet door.

My husband and I are each assigned a set of hooks, and this system works marvelously for keeping our clothing off the floor. It sounds crazy to think I’m too lazy to hang something back up on a hanger or fold it neatly into a drawer all the time, but it’s true! It’s so tempting to throw things in a pile on the floor and let it mound up. Hooks are a way to avoid this.

It takes about the same amount of effort to hang something on a hook as it does to toss it on the floor. So I try my best to contain my things to the row of hooks on the back of our bedroom door.

Selecting Hooks

I chose these hooks from D.Lawless Hardware to organize my bedroom because they are not only stylish but also super functional. They are large, quality hooks with two prongs, which gives me lots of room to hang things on the back of our bedroom and closet doors.

All this talk about hooks got me thinking of other places I could use some, so I rounded up some of my favorite options. There are about a gazillion different hook options out there – which do you like?

1 :: Wooden Numbered Hooks

2 :: Silver Double Hook

3 :: Clear Over-The-Door Hooks

4 :: Command Medium White Hooks

5 :: Command Brushed Nickel Large Hook

6 :: White Hook Rail

7 :: Stainless Steel Over-The-Door Hooks

8 :: Shabby Country Label Wall Hooks

9 :: Over-The-Door 11 Hook Organizer Rack

10 :: Wooden Hook Rail With Labels

11 :: Two Prong Coat Hook

12 :: His & Hers Wall Hook Pair

13 :: Stainless Steel Self Adhesive Wall Hooks

Simple hooks are certainly not a revolutionary organizing tool, but they are definitely effective! My challenge to you is to pinpoint a place in your house that could benefit from a few new hooks. Maybe, like me, you need a solution for keeping clothing off your bedroom floor. Or maybe your kitchen or office could use a place to hang things that you use frequently.

How to Take Care of Your Clothes – T Magazine Guides

By Alainna Lexie Beddie

Illustrations by Konstantin Kakanias, Animation by Jonathan Eden

Buying clothes built to last is one thing — but there’s a lot you can do to make them endure. We polled designers and the dry cleaners they trust for tips on how to take care of our clothes. And our biggest takeaway is that first and foremost, everything we wear should be enjoyed — accessorized with a joie de vivre and not a fear of getting ruined. Here are the experts’ tips for wearing, storing and even cleaning your clothes correctly to prolong the life of your favorite items.

Intimates and Swimwear

Treat Your Delicates Like Delicates

Araks Yeramyan, the founder of Araks, is beloved for her line’s underthings and swimsuits — which she says to wash by hand and never put in the dryer. “On a few lazy occasions, I have tried putting intimates in the machine, and the elastic is never the same.” Even while traveling, she’ll pack light and hand-wash items in the shower.

Yeramyan’s method for washing delicates at home:

  1. Wash like colors together.
  2. Fill a basin with cool water and a gentle detergent (she uses Ecover delicate wash). Or in a pinch, fill the sink with water and shampoo (Dr. Bronner’s lavender soap, in her case).
  3. Swirl the laundry a few times over the course of an hour.
  4. Gently squeeze out excess water.
  5. Dry on a drying rack.

Rinse After Taking a Dip

“Swimwear always needs to soak in water after every use; the saltwater or chlorine breaks down the fibers and the elastic. Your suits will last much longer if you follow this rule,” said Yeramyan.

Let Everything Air Out

“Everything with elastic in it should be in a rotation, especially bras. The elastic needs to relax. In general, no matter what you do, elastic has a shelf life, but the better you take care of them the longer they will last.”

Yeramyan also recommends storing lingerie with space around it, for a little breathing room. And slipping empty perfume bottles into lingerie drawers: “The idea is it leaves a little scent behind.”

Tops

Dress Shirts

“The width of the hanger should not overpass the width of the shirt shoulders.” —Anne-Marie Colban, who co-owns and operates Charvet, a shirt-making company.

Anne-Marie Colban, who co-owns and operates the legendary shirtmaking company Charvet, suggests these tips for taking care of your button-down shirts:

Pay Close Attention to the Insides of Collars. It’s here that stains can creep up from skin products, like lotion or makeup. Be sure to wash them immediately, especially before hanging shirts in the closet (scroll down for tips on how to remove stains).

Avoid Dryers. They will break down the fibers of the fabric and cause the garment to shrink and age prematurely.

Instead, Air-Dry on Hangers. Colban prefers wooden ones. “The width of the hanger should not overpass the width of the shirt shoulders. Make sure the shoulders are well laid on the hanger and more generally, pull a little bit the fabric of the shirt to limit wrinkles (this will facilitate ironing).” When storing hangers in the closet, she suggests leaving space between them — to keep the pressed shirts smooth.

Rewash Stains. “Before ironing, it is important to check that there are no more stains. If there are, wash the shirt again.”

Iron With Water. Colban advocates for steam or no steam, whatever you prefer, but cautions against completely dry ironing. “It is better to iron the shirt when it is still humid. If necessary, a spray with water can make ironing more easy.”

Iron in Order. The correct ironing order is: collar, cuffs and then the rest of the shirt, says Colban.

Pack Them Well. Before traveling with a dress shirt:

  1. Button the shirt completely.
  2. Put a plastic or cardboard band — the kind that come inside new shirts from the store, or from the cleaners — inside the collar (to help support the collar and maintain its shape.)
  3. With the shirt front-side down, place a sheet of paper or tissue paper on the back of the shirt before folding it (to avoid creases).
  4. Use soft cases, like these, to keep the shirts in good condition.
  5. When piling the shirts, alternate their directions.

Insider Tip: Wrinkle-Free Traveling. “I travel with a small spray bottle, and then I fill it with water,” says Bruce Pask, Bergdorf Goodman’s men’s fashion director. “When I unpack, I just give the shirts a quick spritz and tug on the bottom of the hem, and then the wrinkles kind of come out naturally without needing to press it again.”

T-Shirts

The designer Tony Melillo, whose eponymous line of super soft T-shirts (ATM) is beloved by T’s web editors, wears a white T-shirt almost daily. Here are his simple tips for taking care of them.

Wash Gently. Melillo suggests washing T-shirts with cold water and drying on permanent press to avoid wrinkles. Also, try OxiClean. “I’m not saying it’s going to take away pit stains but I put it in everything.”

Stash Carefully. Folding T-shirts keeps them fluffy. Melillo suggests folding in the sleeves toward the back, and then folding the T-shirt in half once crosswise, to avoid creating extra creases. And keeping them in a light stack on the shelf. Don’t hang your T-shirts: He says it creates unsightly hanger marks, and it stretches them — T-shirts can grow an inch just from gravity’s effect on cotton.

More Fashion Tips

Bottoms

Pants

“Clean pants twice during the summer. And then when you’re done with the season, clean them once again before you put them back into your closet.” —Bruce Pask, men’s fashion director at Bergdorf Goodman, a department store that specializes in luxury goods.

To avoid high-maintenance care, Bergdorf Goodman’s men’s fashion director Bruce Pask recommends being mindful of the types of pants you buy in the first place. “I’m not a fan of a linen pant,” he says, for example. “I think they’re far too wrinkle-prone and fragile.” Instead, he sticks to worsted wool pants in the summer and wool flannel in the winter, both of which you can clean at home yourself.

Pask’s other low-maintenance pants rituals include:

Don’t Overwash. “I think your regime is a very personal choice but I would say, depending upon how heavy the rotation, clean pants twice during the summer. And then when you’re done with the season, clean them once again before you put them back into your closet.”

Insider Tip: Buying. Even if a pair of pants says it was prewashed, Pask cautions that a bit of shrinkage will inevitably happen in the laundry. “I make sure to give a little bit of allowance for shrinkage when I buy them.”

Never Underestimate Moths. During a traumatizing moth infestation (from a European hotel, during fashion week), Pask discovered Insects Limited’s pheromone traps. “I order from them on a yearly basis and I’ll just get a set of traps and put them throughout the house just to have as a preventative measure.” For the less gung-ho, T’s market editor Angela Koh recommends stuffing drawers and closets with sachets of lavender to repel the pests and keep things smelling nice.

Hang Mindfully. Instead of organizing pants by color, Pask suggests arranging them by season, keeping lighter-weight pants together on one end of the closet and heavier ones together separately — so that you can easily find what you’re looking for while getting dressed.

Travel Smart. “Since I go to Italy so often for work, I bought an Italian travel iron there because no matter how good the adapters are with things like hair dryers and travel irons, the voltage variance is just never quite right and you end up blowing out the circuit of the item.” He also travels with a lint roller, and suggests a retractable option: Flint rollers are compact and keep the refillable lint sheets safe in your bag.

Prepare to Sew. “Buttons just pop. It just happens. So whenever I’m at a hotel, I always take the sewing kit and just leave it in my luggage. Don’t be above taking them home — that’s what they’re there for.” (If you prefer something with nicer thread and tools, Sweethome tested 9 sewing kits to find the best.)

Denim

Jeans may be the most low-maintenance pants of all. According to Daniel Corrigan, half of the design duo behind Simon Miller, “Wearing raw denim consistently and not washing them will give you a more interesting pair of jeans down the road. ” But he also adds that washing won’t hurt them, and turning jeans inside out will protect the indigo hue.

Similarly, don’t worry about how you store your denim, whether folded neatly in a drawer or tossed into a pile on a chair — “the great thing about denim is that it’s not delicate”— and don’t think twice about wearing it every day, or getting holes. “The knees are typically the first to get worn out, but denim looks great with ripped knees!”

Stain Removal

“The longer you wait to remove a stain, the less likely you’ll be able to remove it.” —Johnny Xirouchakis, general manager of Madame Paulette, a high-end, New York City cleaner.

Madame Paulette, the gold standard for New York cleaners, is a fashion-world fixture (Vogue and Anna Wintour are clients). According to the company’s general manager, Johnny Xirouchakis, “It’s been proven in studies that the longer you wait to remove a stain, the less likely you’ll be able to remove it. ” And his do-it-yourself stain-removal tip couldn’t be simpler:

  1. Wet a cloth with cold water. (Avoid using paper towels so that they don’t shed on your garment and create more of a mess.)
  2. Add a drop of dish detergent to the wet cloth. (Xirouchakis suggests using “a citrus-based soap — anything that smells like lemon or orange.”)
  3. Place another cloth beneath the stain if you can.
  4. Press on the stain, over and over, to lift it out. Resist the urge to rub, or you might damage the fabric.
  5. You can let the stain sit overnight, even in water, before putting it in the laundry. Or you can wash immediately after treating the stain.

Here, Madame Paulette’s experts share how to safely remove other kinds of stains at home — on garments that can be safely cleaned with water. Follow each instruction by washing the garment as you normally would.

Blood or Ink. With a cloth underneath the soiled area, re-wet the stain with ice cold water. Using a Q-Tip or small towel soaked in a cleaning solution (5 ounces water, 1 ounce ammonia, 1 ounce peroxide, 1 ounce color safe detergent) lightly tap the stain, pushing it onto the cloth underneath.

Dirt. Remove any chunks of mud carefully. Place the garment in lukewarm water and move it around to loosen and remove as much dirt as possible. Apply detergent to the stain and re-soak for half an hour; rinse and repeat.

Tomato. With a butter knife or spoon, carefully pick up any excess tomato sauce. Dab detergent onto the stain and, from the underside of the garment, rinse with cold water (to push the stain out of, instead of back into, the garment).

Coffee. Flush the stain with cold water. Then apply a mild cleaning solution (6 ounces water, 2 ounces color-safe detergent) until the stain comes out. If that doesn’t work, try a tougher solution (2 ounces water, 2 ounces color-safe bleach).

Jewelry and Handbags

Jewelry

“The most important thing when you buy a piece of jewelry, is to ask the salesperson how to take care of it. ” —Rebecca Selva, creative director at Fred Leighton, a curator of vintage jewelry.

Simply put, when it comes to jewelry, “Common sense is critical,” says Fred Leighton’s creative director, Rebecca Selva. She elaborates:

Swimming or Exercising? Take It Off! “Diamonds, you know, are the hardest gemstone. They certainly can be worn and enjoyed every day. However, they are a gemstone that can chip.” So take them off when you might knock the band into other metals, such as while lifting weights — or even packing up to move. And especially in the water. “A ring can loosen on your hand — and try finding it in the ocean.”

Ask for Advice When You Buy. “The most important thing when you buy a piece of jewelry, is to ask the salesperson how to take care of it.”

Don’t Fix It Yourself. Ditch the do-it-yourself mentality when it comes to jewelry. “You can actually damage it more by trying to repair something,” Selva says. But before taking it in to the professionals, put broken jewelry in a Ziploc bag — so that you don’t lose any gemstones, pearls or metal pieces en route to have the item repaired. “Or if a strand of pearl breaks, tape the ends or tie a knot if you can — make sure those ends are somehow sealed.”

Keep Things Organized … and Cool. “Diamonds can scratch other diamonds and diamonds can scratch other gemstones, so keep them separate.” Some stones are vulnerable to heat — like opals, turquoise and coral — so don’t keep them somewhere warm or in direct sunlight. It will affect their coloring.

Don’t Scrub Too Hard. Selva recommends soaking most jewelry in lukewarm, sudsy water (or water with lemon), to loosen up the grime, and then very gently cleaning with a soft brush. Remember, a ring gets the least dirty on top of a stone. It’s the underside that gets the dirtiest because that’s the part that touches the natural oils and lotions on your skin. Avoid hot or cold water (radical temperature changes can affect gemstones) and soaking porous gemstones (turquoise, pearls, opals). And don’t forget to close the drain!

Handbags

Have you ever bought a new leather handbag or briefcase that came in a cotton drawstring pouch? That pouch is called a dust bag — it’s not just fancy packaging. “They help isolate your bag from dust and touching items that may discolor or damage your bag,” says Jed Winokur, Coach’s archive director. He says that regularly storing handbags inside them at home is one of two ways to prevent damage. Here are his other tips:

  • Keep handbags stuffed “to help retain their shape.” Acid-free tissue paper (preferably unbuffered) is best; newspaper can cause discoloration and damage over time. Winokur suggests wrapping metal hardware with tissue as well, to safeguard against marks on the leather.
  • Give your bags enough room to breathe and resist piling or stacking them — to avoid scratches and creases.
  • Store them somewhere cool and dark, away from damaging UV rays. But don’t leave them in the attic or basement, “because dry environments cause leather to crack and moist ones invite mold.”

Clean and moisturize leather bags four times per year — to “keep them looking new.”

More About Great Bags

“In order to keep them in premium condition, dress shoes should not be worn for consecutive days.” —Paula Gerbase, artistic director of John Lobb, which specializes in luxurious men’s shoes.

Because there are so many kinds of shoes, we polled four different experts on the proper care of your shoes:

  • Paula Gerbase, artistic director, John Lobb (bespoke and luxurious men’s shoes)
  • Tull Price, founder, Feit (handmade leather footwear)
  • Percy Steinhart, president and creative director, Stubbs & Wootton (fashionable slippers)
  • David Mesquita, vice president, Leather Spa (a repair service with high-end clientele)

And they had shockingly similar advice:

Use Shoe Horns. “They are indispensable for keeping the shape of the shoe,” Steinhart says. Gerbase adds that the simple little tool “ensures that the backs of the shoes are kept intact.”

Don’t Toss Shoes Into a Pile. To prevent shoes from being wrinkled or smushed, every single expert suggests storing them with shoe trees — the foot-shaped devices, available in wood or plastic, that help a pair keep its shape. “If not, clear space on the floor and keep them as neatly as possible,” Steinhart says.

Do Regular Maintenance. “Always check your shoes after wear before placing them in your closet,” Mesquita suggests. Wipe leather clean with a cloth or brush before putting away, and brush off suede of any dust collected during the day.

Condition Regularly. “The biggest misconception I suppose is that leather shoes only need waxing,” Gerbase says, “whereas the conditioning cream is a vital step in maintaining the quality and softness of upper leather. ”

Here’s how Gerbase recommends you condition your shoes:

  1. Wrap a soft cotton cloth tightly around your index finger and dab in the cream.
  2. Apply to the shoe using small circular motions (no sweeping movements).
  3. Leave the cream to seep into the leather for around 15 minutes and then brush off excess with a soft brush.

Price suggests conditioning your shoes just once or twice a year, usually after the winter months. “With all the snow and salt in the streets, the leather will become dry and cracked and will need to be conditioned to prevent damage to the uppers.”

Let Soggy Shoes Dry — Naturally. “If you get caught in a storm and your shoes become soaked, make sure to let them air dry in an open space laid flat before storing them away,” Price says. “If you store them damp, the uppers may become deformed and you may lose the shape of the shoes.”Gerbase adds that if the shoes are wet from rain or snow, you should immediately rinse them in clean water before allowing them to dry in order to avoid the white marks that appear on the upper leather.

Insider Tip: Sole Repairs. “The tips of soles are what wear out the soonest and you can just get the tip portion of a sole replaced versus replacing the whole sole,” Mesquita suggests.

Invest in Cedar. “Cedar is good to absorb moisture and freshen shoe interiors,” Mesquita says. “I myself use them on my sneakers after I wear them!” Some cedar options include shoe trees and little sachets.

Give Nice Shoes a Rest. “In order to keep them in premium condition, dress shoes should not be worn for consecutive days,” says Gerbase. Waiting “allows the leather to dry and breathe in between wears, and lets them rest with their shoe trees which in turn reduce creasing.” Price adds: “I leave them somewhere where a light breeze can hit them to ventilate.”

Insider Tip: Heel Replacements. Don’t wait until you hear a clicking noise to replace the heel of your shoe. Mesquita says to bring the pair in as soon as the heels look worn down to avoid more costly repairs down the road.

About the book

The book of a famous American culturologist reveals many unknown pages in the history of men’s costume. Tracing the ways of its change from ancient times to the present day, the author examines the evolution of the costume, full of drama and unexpected plot twists. Why has this fashion lasted so long? What factors determined its stylistic stability and persuasiveness? How does a man’s suit relate to modern concepts of male and female sexuality? How does it relate to fashion in the past and present? And what is its relationship with modern fashion design and everything else? Why have women been so desperate to copy the men’s suit ever since it was invented? What future awaits him? E. Hollander goes far beyond the history of fashion: many artists and works of art appear on the pages of the book, the social characteristics of Western society in different eras are given, aesthetic trends are analyzed, and the imagery and poetry of the narrative turn serious scientific work into fascinating reading.

Rated the book

Quite a strange book. Perhaps this book can be described as a philosophical reflection on the history of fashion. I don’t know about other readers, but I have always associated complex, confusing and non-specific texts with the word “philosophy”. After all, one cannot say that the book is empty or that it does not contain valuable ideas. No, the ideas are quite interesting. The only problem is how the book is written.
The author analyzes the history of men’s and women’s costume through the prism of the whole history, i.e. how men’s and women’s costumes changed. And in order to understand the essence of the idea, it is necessary to identify the initial and common point for both men and women – Ancient Greece. Thanks to the surviving sculptures of people living at that time, we can see that the clothes of men and women did not differ much. This important fact indicates that society has not yet tried to emphasize the gender roles or social positions of women and men through clothing and has not tried to focus society’s attention on certain parts of men and women through clothing. In ancient Greece, everyone wore clothes that completely hid the figure. Moreover, if nudity was common for men, it was forbidden for women (the famous nude female statues caused quite a stir at the time).
Further, the Middle Ages and modern times with its magnificent women’s costumes, constant migration (movement) of the female waist and fixation on the chest. The men’s suit also undergoes multiple metamorphoses, but by a certain century it stops in its bright and capital change, taking on a form that will eventually result in a modern men’s suit. Those. all those men’s costumes, starting with the codpiece and clothes that make the figure of a man look like a pear, etc. , happened quickly, radically, but at some point stopped, as if finally taking on the final form. The female costume continues its transformations, including the main social battles. Those. battles for recognition in women’s legs. If men’s pants have recognized the presence of legs since ancient times, and we can observe constant changes in fashion associated with the transformation that ultimately resulted in trousers. It was as if the women were obliged to wear skirts and nothing more. The waist could change, the cutout on the chest could increase or decrease, hair could open or be closed with bonnets or hats, but the legs were always closed. As we know, only at 1950 trousers were finally won by women. And even now, a skirt is included in the women’s costume, but not trousers, making the skirt, as it were, an analogue of a man’s tie, which becomes an expression of gender. And does it in such a way that it becomes like a second skin.
An interesting note from the author about the costume. The author writes that the costume appeared as a replacement for knightly armor. All those numerous transformations of the costume, which eventually, at some point, ceased to change much, were connected precisely with the creation of an analogue of knightly armor. And yes, the military uniform (which has no differences between the civilian suit) confirms this perfectly.
These few rather interesting ideas seem to lie on the very surface of the book, i.e. those that are easiest to understand, because further or deeper it was already difficult for me to understand the author. Further, the author writes that in the 20th century, the elimination of exclusively women’s and men’s clothing began (but not completely, because men did not wear skirts and do not wear them) and the emergence of a unisex style. Now you can wear anything with anything (remember that the top of women changed radically, but the bottom part was always covered with a skirt).
In general, the book is not for everyone. It is difficult to read and the book will be of interest only to those who are very fond of the topic “fashion history”.

CTIs from the book “Paul and costume and costume and costume and costume“ Paul and costume and costume ” The evolution of modern… “

The progress of the modernization of women’s fashion itself was slow. Despite the fact that the opening of the neck neckline appeared early enough, the sleeve was shortened only in the 17th century, when a careful attempt was made to expose the arm above the wrist. Gradually, the arm opened up to the elbow, and this corresponds to the further exposure of her above the elbow – the neckline has significantly expanded, and even the shoulders protruded from it. 0003

What does the war have to do with it?

Women began to comfortably wear trousers (thanks to the feminists) even before the Second World War. And yet it all started with her. The war changed both the usual way of life and fashion: the excesses of the era of golden Hollywood were forgotten, and couture houses, if not closed, then boycotted – their founders were reproached for collaborating with the German elite. In many European countries, the so-called rationing was introduced, that is, a sharp reduction in the supply of fabric for everyday clothing – all resources went to military uniforms.

As a result of savings, women’s clothing began to look like men’s: overalls came into fashion, in which it is more convenient than in a fluffy dress to run to a bomb shelter. Those girls who began working in factories changed into shirts and trousers, and those who went to the front began to wear male military uniforms. Already closer to the 1980s, the image of “Rosie the Riveter” becomes a symbol of the women’s movement and the change in gender roles – the war showed that a woman is capable of the same as a man. Later, this idea would be supported by pop culture, such as Katharine Hepburn, who remained in popular memory as an agender Hollywood star.

Le Smoking, Yves Saint Laurent, 1966

Yes, later Christian Dior’s new look appeared in Europe, and suburban dream in America, where the ideal woman is the keeper of the hearth in a fluffy skirt. But the 1960s shook those images, to put it mildly. The beatniks rejected gender prejudice, social norms, war and the rules of decency. Guys and girls wore the same uniform, by which they instantly identified “their”: black turtlenecks, pipe trousers or jeans, leather jackets and berets.

At the same time, Saint Laurent flirts with agenderism and creates the Le Batnik collection for Dior at 1960th year, and already in 1966 he comes up with Le Smoking – a female version of a traditionally male costume.

Toward the mid-1960s, the sexual revolution begins in general: questions about gender roles are again on the lips of progressive youth, and boys and girls dress in the same clothes (caftans with ethnic motifs, flared trousers) and grow their hair. And in 1970, the Austrian designer Rudi Gernreich launched the TV show Space: 1999 (running from 1975 to 1977), in which he showed a gender-neutral utopia, where men and women do not differ from each other.

Where are we heading? The question is whether fashion should reflect the gender of a person (biological, with which a person was born), his gender (the gender that a person considers himself to be – it’s no secret that a man can feel like a woman, etc.) or should not reflect anything , because both gender and gender are stupid to put at the forefront, rose throughout the 20th century.

Animated by: David Bowie

Even the hypersexual 1980s are remembered for their reinterpretation of masculinity in popular culture. The icons of the time were Prince, Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Boy George – men in sequins, with makeup and with millions of fans around the world. And at 19In the 90s, when the era of supermodels in short dresses and with magnificent breasts is still not over, a girl from the outskirts of London, Kate Moss, becomes a new icon. The main brands of this generation (as opposed to Versace and Dolce & Gabbana) were the agender Helmut Lang and Calvin Klein, and the grunge Nirvana was his voice. The style of the musicians was as sloppy as grunge itself: Kurt Cobain wears women’s dresses, and girls wear rough boots. Beauty is now in its absence, and gender here definitely fades into the background.

2018: neither boys nor girls

“This is the future. The boundaries are becoming more and more invisible, and there will soon be no differences between the collections at all. Even the appearance of men and women is becoming the same,” says Luisa Vila Roma buyer Monica Pascarella. In 2018, there was more talk about gender neutrality than ever before. And now this is not nostalgia for the 1960s or 1990s, as it might seem at first glance, but a consequence of social trends. Acceptance of people of any gender, orientation and skin color is the main trend of the progressive population of the planet, even despite the toxic environment with tolerance, say, in the United States and here in Russia.

At the moment, 12 percent of young people consider themselves non-cisgender (that is, their gender does not coincide with their biological sex), and the question arises: do we need a division into male and female in general and in fashion in particular?

Selfridges agender logo

The fashion industry has also asked this question (it has always been sensitive to social trends and protests). For example, during the last spring fashion weeks, more than 60 models walked the runway who consider themselves genderqueer (do not define themselves with any of the genders). There are more and more agender brands – they make clothes for clients of all genders and genders, without dividing into male and female.

They are created by young LGBTQ designers who want gender-neutral fashion to be created by genderqueers, not marketers. Among them, for example, is the young New York brand Official rebrand, which makes neutral and wearable clothes that can be worn by a person of any sex and gender. And most recently, the first store opened in New York, where there is no division into men’s and women’s sections. It’s called the Phluid Store and it features gender-fluid labels with inexpensive clothing. The creator of the store says that this is a store for people who often cannot understand whether they should go to the men’s or women’s section.

A shot from the photo project of bigender supermodel Rain Dove (right), in which photographs of Victoria’s Secret models with “feminine” faces were superimposed on her photo . In the very first show for Calvin Klein, for example, Raf Simons combined the men’s and women’s collections, and every second designer does this now. The most striking example of agenderism in luxury is, of course, Gucci. In the few years that Alessandro Michele has been in charge, the brand has made a huge leap from hypersexuality and oiled bodies in advertising campaigns to an aesthetic 1970s with their sexual freedom and agenderness. And also to the current social agenda.

Alessandro Michele managed to dress the men (at least some of them) in ruffles and suits embroidered with lurex, in “women’s” chiffon blouses with bows and in floor-length fur coats. “I did not invent anything, this is our reality. The fashion industry used to be a thing in itself. Now, if there is a gender fluid trend, I can’t ignore it. Fashion now is the world around us, so for me the very concept of “gender fluidity” is fictional. This is just a description of reality,” says the designer.

Even Donatella Versace, who is in charge of one of the sexiest brands in luxury, says: “I see that the younger generation is not thinking about gender conventions. I’m not saying that all men should wear skirts, but the lines between what men and women can and cannot wear have already blurred.” Everyone is equal, everyone wears what they want, everyone is equally smart and in sparkles.

What about double standards?

There is an important caveat: when people talk about gender-neutral clothes, they usually mean girls in menswear / girls in mens underwear / men and girls who cannot tell what gender they are. But “female” clothing for men is still a huge rarity. So, the H&M agender collection (which is still divided into women’s and men’s sections in stores) includes baggy jeans, T-shirts and hoodies – and they can only be considered unisex for a girl who wants to wear her boyfriend’s clothes. Women’s clothing for guys, meanwhile, is still considered something unhealthy. And even if in 2016 Jaden Smith appeared in a Louis Vuitton advertising campaign in a skirt, this does not make the brand agender – the skirt is from the women’s collection.

Of course, people’s shopping habits can’t change so quickly, because the emphasis on “masculine” and “feminine” is still consistently profitable. And not everyone needs it. Many designers deliberately do not follow the agender trend: take Dolce & Gabbana, for example, who won their clientele with sexy feminine clothes. Miuccia Prada, for example, has openly stated that she is against mixed collections because they take at least twice as much work at the expense of quality. On the other hand, brands are afraid of losing their audience: for example, creative director Ann Demeulemeester, in his interview with the Russian magazine Numéro, said that the combination of men’s and women’s lines is not only unprofitable, but also harmful to the brand concept. This fact is aggravated by the fact that even if the brand has an agender concept, the templates remain the same – they can be either female or male (because despite the progressiveness of the time in which we live, male and female people are physiologically different from each other). So even if Demna Gvasalia and Alessandro Michele do mixed shows, they still wear men’s and women’s clothes, not the same for all models.

In the photo: a shot from Ricardo Tisci’s first lookbook for Burberry

It turns out that the agender lines that represent H&M, or Asos, or even Gucci, are not yet agender at all. This is still an attempt to sell menswear to women and gender-neutral ruffles to men to fit the 2018 social trend. The trend, of course, is positive, but it does not solve a serious problem – we still have to go and go towards the full acceptance of the LGBTQ community and the abolition of the stigmatization of femininity.

Waiting. And we hope one day to find ourselves in a world where there are not only men’s suits for girls, but also designer skirts and high heels for those men who need them – and where everyone can choose not only gender, but also the clothes that suit exactly to him.

An important point is the condition of the dream clothes. If it is torn and dirty, you need to be more careful when dealing with strangers, they may have completely different plans for you and take advantage of your gullibility. And, conversely, clean clothes promise well-being and luck. A large number of bright outfits in the wardrobe also warns of the need to be prudent in life, otherwise a series of wrong actions will lead to losses, including reputational ones.

Dream Interpretation of Tsvetkov

The interpreter believes that the main detail is the amount of clothing on a person. If he is literally wrapped in different parts of the wardrobe, this promises him big trouble in reality. But the lack of clothing portends well-being. If the dreamer is wearing clothes suitable for the season and the situation, then in life he will have an opportunity to prove himself and get the maximum benefit. An awkward outfit suggests that a failure will soon await a person, you should be especially careful if there is an important event ahead. For a man dressed in a woman’s dress, a dream promises trouble, but for a woman in disguise – a chance for success, but this will have to be done with maximum effort.

In a dream, giving clothes to wear is a sign that a loved one is cheating. Dressing up in new hope is a symbol of future changes in position, a job change or an increase in your status.

Loff’s Dream Interpretation

The author of the book believes that clothing becomes a reflection of a person’s inner world. If in a dream you are wearing a dirty outfit, this means that doubts and problems torment you inside. You doubt your actions and suspect that some of them are extremely impartial. And, on the contrary, clean, ironed and neat clothes indicate that a person is too concerned about his reputation and spends too much effort on maintaining it.

Clothing is the embodiment of thoughts and moods. Photo: pixabay.com

Clothes presented in a dream are a symbol of the fact that in reality someone is trying to control you and your life, interfering in everything and trying to subdue your will. You should not rely on the opinions of others in everything, it is better to choose your own path and stick to it.

Wearing ritual robes in a dream means that in reality you are looking for understanding, protection and support from other people. This is not bad, but learn to rely more on your knowledge and experience, and not rely on the prompts of others.

Freud’s dream book

The psychologist believes that clothes seen in a dream can tell a lot about your attitude towards this or that person or to your body. Dressing in someone else’s dress is a sign that a person underestimates his attractiveness, but undressing indicates that the dreamer is ashamed of his body.

If you like clothes on a certain person in a dream, this indicates that you are attracted to him and would like a closer relationship. When it comes to your real partner, it means that you really like intimacy with him. But if someone’s outfit is unpleasant to the eye, this means that in reality this person causes disgust and hostility in him.

Dream Interpretation of Miss Hasse

The author interprets such a dream quite simply. She believes that happiness and good luck in everything portends a vision in which someone buys clothes for themselves. But wearing black clothes is a bad sign that portends sadness and disappointment in life. But remember that all troubles tend to end. White robes symbolize contentment in life, in which nothing should be changed, even if there are such intentions. If the dreamer tries on children’s clothes, this portends a quarrel in the family.

Dream Interpretation of Dmitry and Nadezhda Zima

According to soothsayers, clothes in a dream become a symbol of position in society. New outfits portend a quick change in status: promotion, marriage, inheritance. But dirty or torn trousers, a dress, a sweater are a sign that something can harm your reputation. Too big clothes that you tried on in a dream says that you should not chase the position that you are counting on, this is clearly not up to you. When in a dream you see yourself in uncomfortable clothes, it means that in reality you are not satisfied with the current state of affairs, but you won’t be able to change your status quickly, for this you will have to make a lot of effort.

The fact that you need to be more active in business is indicated by a dream about sportswear, but too colorful clothes warn that you are exchanging your life for trifles. But if in a dream you try on a military uniform, it means that in life you will not be able to evade an unpleasant duty and you still have to fulfill your duty.

Dream Interpretation of the XXI century

Here the interpreters agree that it is necessary to evaluate both the quantity and quality of clothing, its color will be no less important. For example, black predicts an imminent illness, while white is a good omen. A sheepskin coat is a symbol of wealth, a jumper symbolizes friendship and support of loved ones, a jacket portends a possible cold, and a fur coat or fur jacket symbolizes an inheritance.

If in a dream you are wearing a lot of clothes – troubles and problems await you ahead, dressed sloppily or not for the occasion – an unexpected guest is already in a hurry. If you had a chance to try on new clothes, this portends a meeting with a new love, to clean a dress – you will soon become happy, a woman in men’s clothes meets in a dream for the birth of a child.

Burning clothes on a person is a bad sign that promises the loss of all property, and a man in a uniform in a woman’s dream is a sign that she needs to think about the real character and motives of a loved one.

Lunar dream book

According to the authors, clean clothes indicate that you have to become famous or excel in some important matters. But a dress or shirt with spots suggests that you will find yourself in an awkward situation. To lose clothes – to feel shame, to put on new ones – in reality, you will be saddened by bad news, to be dressed in a long dress – to receive a reward.

Dream Interpretation of Astromeridian

Clothes seen in a dream show how others see us. For example, dirty clothes warn against excessive frankness. Your intimate secrets and details of your personal life may become public. If you dress up in old clothes, your subconscious tells you to pay attention to details and not miss valuable ideas, because in this case you make big mistakes and cannot succeed in important projects.

Sometimes dreams may seem quite banal and everyday, but they do not come into our lives by chance. Photo: @andrea-piacquadio, pexels.com

Significant changes are promised by white clothes, but the yellow one speaks of imminent success, the blue portends the imminent fulfillment of the most cherished desires and dreams. If you dressed up in red, it means that in the near future you will successfully get rid of your rivals. A black dress portends sadness, and bright clothes indicate that the same feast will soon come in life, when one significant event will replace another, like on a roller coaster. And it will bring you joy.

Psychologist’s comment

Elena Kuznetsova, Vedic astrologer, psychologist:

Clothing is the embodiment of thoughts and moods. In real life, an outfit can tell a lot about a person’s character and his inner aspirations. That is why the items of clothing that appeared in a dream are also of great importance, and, first of all, depending on how they look. Stains and dirt on clothes indicate that the dreamer’s conscience is also tarnished, and what he has done really worries him. To find peace and peace of mind, try to deal with the consequences of your actions or ask for forgiveness from the people you unwittingly offended. But the white clothes that you put on in a dream are a symbol of the fact that in life you often try on the mask of an infallible judge and ultimate truth. This is not bad, but it is very burdensome for you: after all, everyone should have the right to make a mistake.

Soon the hobby grew into a micro business: the project got a name, an Instagram page, and several original designs — geometric parts cut from brass sheet.

Isakova continues to work with brass, experimenting with designs and forms: she comes up with a design and prepares models, and for the processing of brass and nickel silver – a jewelry metal that imitates silver – and soldering, she turns to friendly production.

New items appear every 3-4 months, and in addition to different geometric configurations, the collection includes models with floral motifs and crystals.

Yuliya Barmotina has long dreamed of her own clothing brand and decided to start from scratch — she went to sewing courses, where she realized what truly high-quality tailoring is worth. In order to produce basic and durable items, Yulia invited her first mentor in cutting and sewing to participate in the project. Now the Minimal team has both its own constructor and tailors with fifteen years of experience.

First appeared in the collection of hoodies, now available in dozens of shades. Basic T-shirts, long sleeves, sweatshirts of different lengths, trousers and suits followed. By the summer, all these things are sewn from cotton, closer to winter – from Turkish fleece.

Before launching new products, the creators of the brand conduct polls on what colors customers like, after which they develop samples. They are tested for two weeks: they are worn every day and washed at least seven times. If the sample has not faded and has not lost its shape, then five copies of each model are sewn.

A year later, we thought about our own line: we needed universal positions that would emphasize the avant-garde of Korean designers and serve as a neutral background for it. This is how the 2N brand was born.

2N clothes are made in Kazan from fabrics purchased in South Korea. Here you can find thin jersey bodysuits and leggings, elegant suits and dresses, warm knitwear and jumpers. The remnants of fabrics from production are sent to a children’s organization as materials for needlework lessons.

At the brand’s factory in Arakchin, six main and ten additional collections are sewn a year, designed in the smart casual style, and they include not only clothes, but also accessories.

Original prints, colors and embroideries are the merit of our own design bureau. Designers develop a concept, create sketches and test ideas on a simple base fabric. In the design bureau, samples are converted into patterns, sewn from a suitable fabric, and if the model is successful, mass production is launched.

Yana Ganeeva graduated from the Faculty of Law and worked in the arbitration court, but from childhood she dreamed of becoming a designer. In 2013, everything worked out: a decree, 10 meters of denim as a gift from her husband, the first skirts and dresses with collars. Over time, a staff of seamstresses appeared, and the idea to increase the size range to 52 required buying fabrics in bulk at textile exhibitions.

The brand does not have a strict release schedule for new products, it all depends on inspiration, so the custom tailoring format is popular with customers – from underwear and pajamas to trouser suits, coats and fur coats.

The brand now produces seasonal and capsule collections of outerwear, casual and evening jackets, office blouses and trousers, basic T-shirts, homewear and accessories.

harness in addition to the final collection of coats.

Handmade ornaments attracted visitors of Kazan markets with a nostalgic mood: smooth balls resemble children’s pyramid toys, and labels for them with stamps like on bed linen in a kindergarten or a train were printed on Soviet paper from Avito.

The diameter of the balls is from 1. 5 to 4.5 cm, they are made of Russian birch wood. To preserve the texture, the designer covers the wood with a translucent stain, and so that the metal base does not come into contact with the skin and does not cause discomfort, he uses a PVC tube. The plans are to completely switch to production residues from a local woodworking enterprise.

For example:
✨ Double necklace — 3500 R
✨ Zvetochek necklace — 3500 R
✨ Monocollet — 3500 R

“It’s a pity there are no men’s dresses. Would wear “: why is it normal to wear clothes of the opposite sex?

More and more designers are taking to the catwalks of the collection “without gender”, and last men’s fashion weeks were more than ever skirts. While experts are arguing about the long-term nature of this trend, we have collected stories of people who are already wearing clothes “not of the same gender” – and we learned from them what led them to this and what kind of reaction from others they meet.

Nika Voyutskaya, St. Petersburg

It all started when I wanted my boyfriend’s T-shirt. I’ve always found it romantic and sexy to wear the clothes of someone I’m dating. Although that gentleman promised me his T-shirt with a sad smiley and love to the grave, he quickly disappeared. Apparently, he did not want to part with his clothes.

I was seventeen and didn’t really bother with what to wear. But a broken heart suddenly turned me into a fashionista who reads about all the “trends of the season” – but a fashionista without money, because where did the student get them from. The solution was found: I began to earn extra money and everything that I received, I lowered on the same day in my favorite St. Petersburg second-hand stores. Usually there is no or almost no division into “male” and “female” in them, and you just delve into a pile of things. So I didn’t even think about gender and bought a huge coat with a houndstooth print and wide shoulders. The oversized fashion was just gaining momentum, and I only learned from my friends that the coat was for men. Somehow I didn’t care.

This was the first purchase of men’s clothing, but not the last. Over the next five years, I realized that the best jackets and trench coats are second-hand and they are men’s, that basic T-shirts and hoodies from the men’s department of the mass market are often of better quality, that there is no difference between “women’s” and “men’s” sneakers, only the latest design cooler. Once my colleague complained that her adult nephew had bought new clothes and that she needed to give everything old to someone. I shouted: “Bring everything!”. So I got two favorite shirts: gray and pink. Have you ever noticed that the collars and lapels of men’s shirts are wider, firmer and sharper? I want to buy cufflinks for them. The main charm of men’s clothing for me is loose fit and volume, because I love oversize, and the largest sizes of “female” things often look scanty, or something, and do not “hang” on you according to the guide.

Although I didn’t think about whether I was buying “men’s” in second-hand stores, it was difficult for me at first to enter the “men’s” department in a regular store. It seemed that they would look at me strangely if I picked up men’s clothes and went to the fitting room. But then it didn’t matter. And when the gender-neutral second-hand store Eversale appeared in St. Petersburg, the owner of which calmly takes pictures in women’s dresses and looks cool, they completely let go.

I recently ran into oodji for a white T-shirt and a black turtleneck and asked a consultant in her forties to quickly find me something. She herself asked: “Male or female?”. And I’m not at all surprised that I don’t care. Then I finally realized that all thoughts about “weirdness” were in my head. What is symptomatic is that in the men’s section it turned out to be the desired one, and in the women’s section there were only nightmarish clothes with ruffles and flowers. I don’t mind, but these were really awful.

Now I have a third of my wardrobe – men’s clothes or someone else’s. It’s my cousin’s denim jacket, my friend’s dad’s 90s leather jacket, the perfect black straight-cut blazer from a second-hand shop in Cologne, an oversized khaki trench coat, a pair of loose wide leg trousers, a bunch of T-shirts, hoodies and sweaters. And I’m cool, I want more.

Alice, Kursk

I have been wearing typically masculine clothes since I was 17 (that is, more than ten years). Then it was not yet a trend – everyone wore jeans that looked like leggings, and T-shirts were only on the figure. I started with just them and shirts, looking for cool options in the mountains of second-hand clothes. Then, at 18, returning from a young man the next morning after a party, I put on his jeans, because ultra-mini at 9morning is too radical. Since then, our wardrobe has remained partly shared. Sweaters, jumper, trousers and suit vests – I borrowed all this and just “tucked away” from my husband. The last such thing was his parka, from which I removed the sheepskin lining, rolled up the sleeves (twice, and here it is worth mentioning that my height is 160 cm, my husband is 180 and the jacket was a little oversized even for him) and began to walk in it almost all the time from September to April for two years. I have never had a more comfortable and classy jacket. I would wear men’s sneakers if I had a larger foot size!

Anzhelika Avans, stylist

When I was a child, I often carried my brother’s things because they looked cool and unusual and were much more comfortable. I wore everything: men’s shorts, shirts, t-shirts, jeans. We were often confused because of this, although I still looked like a girl dressed in men’s clothes, and in general it was not my goal to look like a guy. Then we grew up and scattered around the world. I started taking my boyfriend’s T-shirts, and then I realized: “Why should I take the guy’s clothes when I can buy them myself?”

This is how my style began to develop. I work with clothes and I see that the men’s collections in many brands are often sewn much better, the fabrics are more natural, and they are often cheaper. And men’s clothing is more practical – it does not have rhinestones and all sorts of gender references. And I began to buy almost everything in the men’s departments: jackets (by the way, men’s jackets have a lot of pockets and this is very convenient – I wish designers would understand that women also need pockets!), classic trousers, hoodies (I love them for the density of fabrics), jeans, And, of course, t-shirts. I even have two pairs of men’s shoes – the size allows. In general, my wardrobe practically consists only of men’s things. Sometimes I mix them with something very feminine for contrast.

At first I was embarrassed to dress like this. And then I realized that I’m so comfortable, it’s in my nature and you shouldn’t think about what someone will think or say, they won’t look like that. To be honest, since childhood, I have not heard from anyone that I look like a boy or even criticize my appearance. On the contrary, everyone is interested in where this or that thing comes from and are very surprised when I say that it is masculine. I even “hooked” some of my acquaintances on the “shopping needle in the men’s departments.”

I really love the time we live in because we can express ourselves in clothes in almost any way. People are increasingly aware that gender stereotypes are imposed by society, and we ourselves decide whether to follow them or not.

Kirill, St. Petersburg

I sometimes wear a kilt. I put it on for city holidays, parties of friends, just for a walk. Several times people have asked me if I’m cold, why the kilt and if I wear briefs under it (the most popular question). For the first time, the idea to wear appeared on St. Patrick’s Day five or six years ago. I like it because it is stylish, unusual and quite comfortable in the warm season.

Maria, doctor

For me, the choice of men’s clothing is obvious in the “I want it!” mode. Mom taught. She often wears unisex and masculine, ranging from shoes, jeans (always loved high-tops, and in the 90s, in general, there was nothing to choose from) and shirts, ending with outerwear.

As a child, I used to wear a lot after my brothers, and as an adult, I began to use the mass market. I go to the women’s section, and there are only sparkles that I don’t like! And there is nothing to close the lower back almost always. I go into the men’s one: you can close everything you need, and with any normal color. I’m embarrassed by the reaction of sellers, of course. But I often take men’s sweatshirts and sweaters. It’s a pity there are no men’s dresses. Would wear.

Sherlock Holmes coat is my dream. Do they make this uniform for women?

Separate pain – doctor’s gowns. I go straight to the men’s section. Tailoring for women is a variety of rushing catastrophes. And in the men’s you can find just a bathrobe. And comfortable, and looks like a doctor. Saleswomen in stores know this, they often offer it themselves.

Alina Shcheglova, Veliky Novgorod

About a month ago I bought men’s trousers. Yourself. In the second, I just grabbed the Valentino logo. Slightly sutured on the sides (I’m petite and often everything is too big for me, usually it doesn’t bother me at all, but the pants just fell off a little).
In general, for a month now I have been in some shock at how comfortable men’s clothing is!

First, it’s comfortable. You can sit down and not press down anywhere (in fact, the absence of minimal pressure on the crotch from the pants is wildly cool, as it turned out).
Secondly, large pockets on all sides. Big! Deep, comfortable, warm pockets.
Thirdly, it’s nice in it. The high landing is so cool (and great), as it turned out. Not the same as in jeans, so that the belt is at the waist, but the crotch will still squeeze when landing, but just so that the waist is warm for the kidneys and other important human tripe, and at the same time, at least sit, at least jump. Comfortable.
Why are women not valued so much in our country?
A simple cry from the soul and a call to do good for yourself and conveniently .

Polina Sollertis, Voronezh

I am one of those women who steal clothes from her husband, and I know many couples with mixed wardrobes. I really like to go to men’s stores and often buy clothes there, I find them more stylish.

I’m really looking forward to when the shoes will finally merge into a single dimensional grid. Sneakers, boots, Chelsea, mules – already have no gender, they are divided only by size. And some men walk better in heels than most women.

There are many models of clothes in the world, tailored so perfectly that they suit everyone, I see no reason to share them. My husband and I have things in common. We would love to dress in agender shops. We are even thinking about making our own brand. For me, as a designer, the person himself is much more important than his gender.

Shoma Izuru, Tokyo

When I moved to Japan, my 176 cm, which is very outstanding for Russia, made me feel like a Goliath. It took half a year to adapt and learn not to leave half a scalp on the jambs of doorways, deftly dodge handrails in cars and gracefully arrange legs in the aisles of buses that do not fit into the distance between the seats.

No miracle happened to local clothes. The size of the Japanese sizes made uniform obscenities with my proportions: the waist line strove to climb onto the chest, the pants and sleeves were hopelessly short. You can’t play on oversize either: where it should only begin, the Japanese dimensional grid ceases to exist.

Interrupted by Yoox – there are American brands with a straight silhouette, which is well stylized in oversized. And then, with the next order, they delivered a double-breasted jacket to me, which turned out to be fastened on the right side. As a result, I fell in love with crossdressing.

Husband swears that I carry his things. I also had my eye on the shoes, but the width of the foot for the guys is still different.

I graze in the men’s departments of shopping malls, I catch chic things in local second-hand shops (they alone made it worth moving to Japan!). At the same time, the staff shied away, but politely kept quiet in Japanese.

In general, in men’s clothes, even if I manage to get the right lengths and girths in my size, some proportions still don’t suit me. For example, due to the greater width of the back in size M jackets, creases are obtained at the back, you can’t write them off as “as intended”. In the store you can order a fit, but this, as a rule, plus 20-25% of the cost. I thought, why shred a new thing, if you can immediately sew it cheaper according to your own standards. But four ateliers refused to make the jacket. They say the pattern will not sit. Even after I promised to attach the excess to the chest with tape. I don’t give up, I keep looking.

I don’t do well with dresses, because it seems to me that a large nose and an elongated face look too rough against the background of feminine silhouettes. The question “what dress to choose for yourself, so as not to look like a travesty?” closed – nothing. And the jackets are fine.

By the way, the psychological aspect is also present. My mother wanted a boy, dressed up to five years old in “boys’ clothes”. Therefore, men’s trousers and shirts are definitely more comfortable for me. Although there is a feeling that recently the love for men’s wardrobe is beginning to take the form of a fetish.

Marfa, St. Petersburg

I buy men’s underpants like Carrie from Sex and the City. The first time I bought it for fun: I thought I’d take a picture and let it lie for a masquerade, but something went wrong. They turned out to be so comfortable that they moved to the rank of home wear.

Natalya Klimenko, stylist and image designer, Severodvinsk

I have always liked men’s clothes. As a teenager, she wore dad’s shirts at home, then boyfriends’ T-shirts went into action. When she got married, she wore her husband’s jackets and sweaters with pleasure. For the last two years I have been wearing his clothes regularly, mixing them with mine. Shirts, T-shirts, jackets, jeans, jeans, jackets, baseball caps. At first he was offended, saying, “you have your own.” And he himself suggested that I try on the last jeans – and they sat down like a glove!

Why do I like to wear men’s clothes? I often think about this myself. Firstly, it can diversify your wardrobe, and if you are lucky, and you and your man are about the same size, you can climb into his closet and rent a couple of things.

Secondly, men’s clothes look stylish and modern on women. And if you are looking for the perfect white shirt among female models, stop this activity and boldly go to the men’s one!

Thirdly, it’s very sexy when you and your man know that in fact these are his things and you are cool in them! And he, having grumbled a little and made a displeased face, in a couple of months he will offer you to try on his new jeans.

I have infected many of my friends with love for men’s clothing. When we meet, our husbands complain to each other about what we recently stole from their closet. But we all know that it gives them goosebumps when your girlfriend wears your clothes.

I also continue to convince my clients that a men’s shirt is perfect in cut, and a jacket from a man’s shoulder will look more feminine on them than any other.

Elena

There are ten shirts in my wardrobe, only one of which is for women; five to seven men’s jumpers, 3/4 of my belts from the men’s department (one is from the uniform of the Russian army), men’s trousers (vintage, they are about 30 years old, inherited from my father), five men’s scarves, a pair of men’s T-shirts and hoodies and a leather officer’s tablet Soviet aviation.

It is difficult to fit women’s shirts and jumpers on my figure, but men’s shirts are easy, and they often look more interesting; the pants are just super-warm and comfortable, and the rest I just liked, got into the mood.

When I told my mother that I was buying men’s clothes, she worried: “What if someone notices and laughs?”. I told her that I get a lot of compliments, and that was the end of the discussion. Now she herself has already stolen two or three men’s shirts and a pair of jumpers from me, and she also receives compliments.

I have never thought about linking a thing to gender, I just look for what I like. I dream of Carrera men’s glasses (a la ski mask), but for now the toad is choking me to buy them.

Sasha, Novosibirsk

I have been doing fashion styling and have been raising my boyfriend Oscar for six years now. I always liked men’s clothes, it seemed natural to wear them: my mother raced in huge Hawaiian shirts and sweaters, and I started after her. I never hesitate to try on things in the men’s departments of Zara, H&M, Mango, Massimo Dutti. Often the basic things there are of better quality and the compositions are more natural for the same price. In addition to their practicality, menswear makes me feel secure and at the same time looks like a challenge. A men’s suit and brogues, no make-up and massive earrings or a chain are one of my favorite outfits.

The topic of non-gender clothing is very interesting to me, both as a social phenomenon and as a fashion trend. I even devoted a graduation shoot to this topic, so the boys argued on it who would be filmed in a skirt. I am sure that all stereotypes are imposed by society. As soon as a skirt on a man is no longer perceived as something unusual, it will become part of our life.

Son I always look for clothes in all departments. Often for boys they offer a combination of blue and red, it irritates me terribly. The palette of his wardrobe is as diverse as possible: pink, lilac, yellow – in my understanding, colors cannot belong to any gender. I don’t plan to wear him in a dress, somehow he doesn’t ask. But she wears leggings and culottes without any problems.

Katya, Krasnodar

The first time I put on a piece of men’s clothing somewhere in the eighth grade, it was my father’s cardigan, which was just gathering dust on his shelf. I wore it for a long time, with love, until it got completely worn out, despite constant quarrels with my mother about my appearance, who said: “We can buy you normal things, but you are a disgrace to everyone.”

I had absolutely no gender prejudices in my head then, I simply did not understand the claims from my relatives. Especially since all these huge things looked so cool. In the ninth grade, I ordered two pairs of men’s jeans for myself – I could not find something similar in the women’s departments. It was such a delight! Quality, fit, comfort, the only thing was that I had to take in a little at the waist. At school, they made comments about the appearance, of course.
