Plaster mixtures are usually produced on a cement basis, although today more expensive compositions with a polymer binder are becoming more popular. And yes, everything you have heard about gypsum plasters for outdoor use and their advantages over traditional recipes is nothing more than myth and advertising tinsel.

Gypsum is one of the most hydrophobic building materials in the world and should not be used outdoors.

Smooth plaster

Despite its seeming simplicity, the production of a smooth facade for painting is one of the most complex works requiring high qualifications from the performer.

Textured plaster

Dry facades

Thus, using brick as a facing material, you can make a house built of cheap and practical foam blocks look more respectable and protect the building from premature destruction.

Another important advantage of bricks is a huge choice in the construction market. Anyone who wants to make the cladding of the facade of his house can choose the material according to his taste and wallet. Brick prices depend on its type, which are divided by color, shape, and most importantly, by production technology.

Material selection

Since we are talking about brick as a cladding material, you should choose it based on your taste and ideas of how your house should look after completion of work. Of course, the first thing you should pay attention to is the color of the brick.

They can be of almost any color, but unusual shades for it, such as green, blue, blue, etc., are more characteristic of a purely design material; stoves, arches and other similar structures are often decorated with such bricks.

The most common brick colors are dark brown, which is obtained by adding manganese to clay, yellow and white, mixing clay with lime, red brick, obtained by firing a certain type of clay. All these colors can be combined with each other, their configuration is limited only by your imagination.

What else can be said about shades is that when choosing, it is better to buy all the necessary batch at once, in the same place. Otherwise, if, during the cladding process, it turns out that there is not enough brick, and it will need to be bought in addition, it will be extremely difficult to pick up the same shade.

Brick is also divided by construction. They are full-bodied, that is, homogeneous, and they are hollow, such a brick has several internal through cells. The first version of the brick is more expensive and heavy, the second, respectively, is lighter, but also cheaper.

In addition to color and design, this material is also divided according to the technology of their production, due to which they have different physical properties. According to this parameter they are:

  • Glazed;
  • Ceramic;
  • Clinker;
  • Hyperpressed;
  • Silicate.
Glazed and ceramic bricks

Produced using the same technology. Glazed brick is the same ceramics, but subject to volumetric staining. These are the same bricks that we talked about above, those that can be any color. Therefore, if you need to draw up a design drawing on the wall, then you cannot do without this type of material.


Outwardly it looks like an ordinary brick, but it is much stronger due to a special approach to production. They include a special grade of clay, which, when fired, gives the brick incredible strength. Clinker type of brick, I recommend using it in places of greatest stress, such as basement, door and window openings.


The production technology of this material implies no firing, clay as such is also not used. Brick is obtained by very strong pressing of various rocks. Thanks to this, the material has the appearance of natural stone, but it is cheaper, and it is better to succumb to processing.

Sand-lime brick

The most common and familiar material. Relatively cheap and practical, but not suitable as a facing. It has all the necessary properties, except for a pleasant aesthetic appearance. Therefore, it is no longer listed on the construction market as a facing material.

Foundation requirements

Wall cladding with bricks is demanding not only on the material itself, but also on the foundation, namely the foundation of the building on which the laying will be carried out. I don’t think I need to explain that brick is a very heavy material.

When cladding walls, you are actually building another wall, and it will have a colossal weight even if hollow bricks are used. Of course, it is better that all this weight has a reliable support in the form of a foundation, and here a problem may arise.

As I said, cladding can be carried out immediately on a building under construction, or it can be used to refresh an already “old” house. In the first case, during the construction of the building, the foundation must be laid with the expectation of facing masonry, for this it must be expanded. Lay the foundation so wide that the facing masonry does not protrude beyond it by more than half its thickness.

Screw pile foundations do not need to be laid as they cannot support the weight of the wall. For this purpose, a concrete foundation, reinforced with stones and concrete supports, is better suited.

An important point! The load-bearing wall and facing masonry must be on the same foundation.

But what if the building has been built for a long time, and the width of the foundation is not enough to build a brick wall on it? Do not worry, there is a way out of this situation, hundreds if not thousands of old brick-lined buildings can serve as proof of this.

To expand the base, experts recommend using galvanized steel angles, which are attached to the main foundation with steel anchors. Please note that the corners must have a large section in order to withstand the crazy weight of the brickwork.

Brick laying technique

Naturally, the first thing to do before starting work is to calculate the required amount of material. To do this, you need to put a trial row of bricks of the desired size in several rows, and taking into account the resulting height of the masonry, equate it to the height of the bearing wall. Fitting masonry, performed without the use of mortar.

After calculating the required amount of bricks, and having purchased the entire batch, you can start work. Mix the cement-sand mortar, its consistency should be thick enough, for more reliable adhesion, bricks to one another. The density of the solution should be such that when you put a brick on it, it should not “float” on it, but should confidently hold on to it.

Keep a distance from the load-bearing wall when cladding, it should be about 30 cm. if the facing of a wooden house is carried out. You will also need these 30 cm if you plan to use heaters like mineral wool or polystyrene, but we’ll talk about them a little lower.

To prevent the masonry from collapsing, it must be fastened to a load-bearing wall. The best way to do this is to use “knit”. This technique involves driving metal dowels into a load-bearing wall every 4–6 rows of bricks, 50–70 cm wide apart. One end of the wire is tied to the dowel caps, and the other is hidden in the masonry along its width. Thus, part of the load falls on the load-bearing wall, and gives the cladding better stability.

Separately, it is worth mentioning how to lay a brick, when facing, what layer to apply the mortar. Since our masonry initially carries decorative properties, the mortar layer should be the same and not exceed 10 mm in thickness. Before putting a brick on the cement mixture, it is necessary to wet it, this is necessary so that the material does not take moisture from the solution, thereby deteriorating its properties.

Every 6 rows of masonry, check that the mortar has not come into contact with the outside of the brick, if this occurs, the mixture must be removed immediately. Otherwise, it will be problematic to do this later, and it also increases the risk of salt release from the material in places of contamination.

Always check the level of the wall plane with a level and a plumb bob. It is also important to set the correct level at the very beginning of work, if this is not done, then the result can be disastrous, up to the complete analysis of the masonry.

To get a good – even tone of the entire plane, the brick must be taken from several packages at once. Also, after completion of work, you can treat the entire wall with bleach, this will also allow you to set a uniform surface color. In the process of work, remove excess mortar from the joints, this must be done immediately, because, otherwise, you will have to re-assemble the scaffolding, and much more effort will have to be made to remove the mortar.

Warning! Do not work in cold weather. If the air temperature is below 0, then the work must be curtailed. The same applies to rain, with its arrival, you need to cover the masonry and material, assemble the tool and wait.

Three-layer walls with brick cladding

Three-layer walls are nothing but a load-bearing wall, insulation and the actual cladding. The most popular insulation is mineral wool and polystyrene, as well as their varieties.

Mineral wool has the best thermal insulation properties, but it releases toxic substances, of course, within the normal range, but their toxicity has not decreased from this. Its service life is less than that of polystyrene. Therefore, it is preferable to use it. Since disassembling the masonry to replace the insulation, I think it is not included in your plans.

Insulation is attached to the load-bearing wall using plastic anchors, which are called “umbrellas”.
