Keeping humidity levels low is a great way to reduce the risk of mold — measure and monitor conditions by using a humidity meter. The ideal humidity level is under 50%. This can be achieved by using a dehumidifier or turning up the air conditioning. Don’t forget to look out for rooms in the house that might be more susceptible to high humidity levels — basements, for example, should be checked consistently for increases in moisture.

Keep Areas Ventilated

Another great preventative tip is making sure that your home has excellent ventilation. This is especially important in bathrooms, where moisture and condensation from the shower can build up. Adding an extra exhaust vent can help to improve ventilation and prevent mold issues. Get An Inspection

The first step in the water damage restoration process is an inspection. This will help experts to determine exactly how extensive the problem is and where water damage is present, as some types of mold and water damage can be difficult to spot. Remove Any Water

The dry out process typically takes from 3-5 days and the machines need to run 24 hours a day during that time for the house to dry out quickly and efficiently. During this step, affected areas will be taped off to isolate them from the rest of the home and ensure that the heat is targeted to the areas that need it most. Experts will monitor the moisture levels throughout the dry out to track progress.

After the dry out is complete, the house will be tested for mold. If mold is present, then a mold remediation will need to be performed.

Mold Testing vs Mold Remediation

If you do not find a water source, then the first step to determine if you have mold is to do a mold test.

Florida and many states require two different licenses:

• Mold testing license
• Mold remediation license

You will need two different companies. One to perform the mold test, and the other to do the mold remediation.

Although in most cases it is possible to stay in your home during the mold remediation process, ask an expert to ensure that it is safe. You may be more comfortable finding other accommodations for a few days.

During mold remediation, affected areas will be isolated with containment barriers to prevent further spread. Then mold will be removed using various tools including:

• Vacuums
• Chemical bio wash
• Wire brushes
• Encapsulation paint

After all traces of mold on surfaces have been removed, the air itself is cleaned. After all, there may be airborne mold spores which could continue to cause health problems! Post Remediation Verification

Is black mold dangerous?

The short answer is—not really. But that doesn’t mean you should keep black mold as a pet.

Everyone has different levels of tolerance to allergens like mold spores, but that’s all black mold is—an allergen.¹ Those with asthma, respiratory allergies, or immune suppression will feel the effects of black mold’s mycotoxins more than most folks.

As one source put it, “Previous reports of ‘toxic mold syndrome’ or ‘toxic black mold’ have been shown to be no more than media hype and mass hysteria. ” ²

But whether you feel black mold symptoms or not, it’s best to get rid of black mold as soon as you find it.

What are the symptoms of black mold exposure?

If you find black mold on your property, there’s no need to panic. But black mold presents more health risks to sensitive groups like those with respiratory conditions or immune conditions.

Black mold exposure symptoms

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), black mold spores can generate cold- or flu-like symptoms such as:

• Stuffy nose
• Wheezing
• Skin and eye irritation

Longer exposure can cause more serious symptoms like:

• Fever
• Shortness of breath
• Nausea

So while black mold probably won’t kill you, it can make you feel sick and should be removed as soon as possible.

How does black mold get inside a house?

Mold spores find their way inside by hitchhiking on clothes, pet fur, and air currents into your home. But spores can’t get comfortable without plenty of water. This is why you’ll usually find black mold around water-damaged areas impacted by plumbing issues like floods or leaky pipes.

Materials like drywall, carpet, or gypsum board can soak up water, creating a perfect home for a black mold colony. If you find water damage at home, it’s crucial to remove all the affected materials to prevent mold from growing.

Black mold removal and cleaning

Mold remediation in stores, offices, or schools is best left to professionals. This also applies to household mold exceeding 10 square feet.

The contractors you choose should have insurance and licenses from organizations like the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC).

Homeowners can handle cleaning about 10 square feet (roughly 3 feet by 3 feet) of black mold on their own. ³ If the patch is small enough, a combination of bleach, water, scrubbing, and ventilation should do the trick.

Before treating mold on your own, prioritize ventilation and protective gear.

Clear the air

Create a bleach mixture 

If the black mold growth in your home is small enough for you to treat alone, a simple mixture of bleach and water can help. Add one cup of bleach to one gallon of water and apply it to the moldy spots. You can also find commercial black mold removal products.

Soak a paper towel in the cleaner and press it over the mold growth to dampen the area. Then start scrubbing. Avoid spraying moldy areas, since the droplets will collide with the mold spores and launch them throughout the room, making them easier to breathe in and harder to eradicate.

Be sure to dry the area thoroughly when you’re done.

Do NOT mix bleach with ammonia. This combination can create toxic fumes that are far more dangerous than any mold you’re trying to clean.

Final word on black mold: Best avoided—but not deadly 

As for black mold’s toxic reputation, those with immune suppression, asthma, or other respiratory problems are most at risk of feeling ill.

It’s not likely that you’ll die from black mold poisoning because it’s just not that toxic. That said, you should act quickly if you find it in your home. The good news is it’s treatable, removable, and preventable.

Black mold FAQ

Not big at all. Spores from black mold or the Stachybotrys chartarum can range anywhere between 2 and 100 microns.⁴ To give you a better idea, the average human hair is about 70 microns wide.

Mycotoxins are naturally occurring toxic compounds found in pantry food like cereals, dried fruit, nuts, and spices. Exposure can occur from eating infected food or through the animals who ate contaminated food.⁵

We found a handful of sources recommending treatments like tea tree oil, grapefruit, and vinegar (just not in the same mixture). And while we haven’t tested these remedies out ourselves, many of the natural items listed have antifungal properties that could dry out black mold.

However, we recommend looking to the pros if you need help with a larger mold colony.

Black mold thrives on water and porous material like drywall or wood which commonly mix in areas like ceilings, basements, and crawl spaces. You can tell if your home has black mold by simply looking and sniffing. If you still aren’t sure, you can find black mold test kits online for around $40.

Drywall Broken Shapes DIY – DIY (Drawings, Manuals)

Drywall sheet is a favorite of builders and designers: it’s easy to work with, the process isn’t too messy, and things move quickly. But if everything is clear with straight structures, then if necessary, getting a circle, an oval or a smooth bend causes problems, since between the soft cardboard sheets there is a hard core that is devoid of plasticity. How to get a curvilinear shape without breaking the sheet? This can be done in several ways, both on dry material and using water.

OPTIONAL
Let’s start with the easiest, but also the most expensive way. There is a special arched drywall. It is thinner than conventional plasterboards (thickness 6 and 6.5 mm) and is designed specifically for making bent elements. On sheets of flexible drywall, you can make fairly large bending radii – it is suitable for creating arches, domes. The recommended bending radii for this material are 600 mm for internal radii and 1000 mm for external radii. A thin sheet can be bent directly with your hands, you need to do this along the GKL. However, the last rule is valid for any drywall.

Arched drywall is bent gradually and, with the help of screws or self-tapping screws, is attached to a special metal profile – a frame with cutouts on the sides that can be bent. Such profiles can have different lengths and bending radii from 100 mm. Broken profiles are responsible for the rigidity of the structure. Since the sheet is thin, and therefore not too strong, it is made two-layer to strengthen the structure. In order to save money, this option is also possible: make the inner (first) layer from ordinary GKL, and use flexible as the outer sheet (second layer).

WET WORK

If you want to bend ordinary drywall to a certain radius, you will have to tinker. Most often, to obtain a bend, the GKL is wetted: the outside of the future part is rolled with a wet roller or brush dipped in water at room temperature. After a while, water penetrates through the cardboard, the gypsum gets wet – the core of the sheet becomes soft and pliable for changes. Now it can be bent to the required radius, but preferably not too small, otherwise the sheet will break. GKL should dry on the template – so it will retain the required shape. If special accuracy is not required, and the sheet itself is not wide, then you can install its ends on supports, and put a load in the middle – this way you get a smooth bend.

If you need a bend with a radius of less than half a meter, water alone will not be enough: you will need to not only wet, but also perforate the material. The work begins with the fact that both or only the outer side of the sheet (depending on the required bending radius) is rolled with a needle roller – it punches many small holes in the cardboard. After that, as in the first method, the sheet that has become porous is impregnated with water using a roller or sprayer. Moistened GKL is fixed on the form (for example, on a pipe of the desired diameter, plywood or chipboard construction) and bent – in this position it should dry completely. In this case, the radius of the template should be slightly smaller than the radius of the required bend.

When choosing how to work with drywall, you need to take into account not only the bending radius that you want to achieve, but also the thickness of the material. A thick sheet (12.5 mm) can be bent to a radius of up to 1000 mm, on a sheet with a thickness of 9. 5 mm you can get a bend with a radius of up to half a meter, and the thinnest drywall (6-6.5 mm) can be bent to a minimum radius of up to 300 mm.

DRY RESIDUE

If you want to get a curved element with a sufficiently large radius (1-2.75 m), you can do without dilution of dampness – limit yourself to the dry method. This is quite difficult, and the bend will not be very smooth. If a thick sheet (12.5 mm thick) is chosen for work, only a large radius (2.5-2.75 m) will be achieved. 9.5 mm GKL can be dry-bent to a radius of up to 2 m, and the thinnest 6 mm sheet – up to 1 m. You will need a sharp knife – they cut cardboard on one side. It is important to choose the right side for you: if you plan to make a concave element (for example, an arch), the cardboard is cut on the inside of the future structure, if the sheet is bent outward (to make a column), cuts are made on the outside. The cut lines should be perpendicular to the length of the bend, and their frequency depends on the required radius – the smaller it is, the more often the cuts should go (as a rule, the distance ranges from 10 to 50 mm).

If you need a smooth and small bend, and for some reason it is desirable to avoid the wet method, then you can bend the drywall with a milling cutter. She makes parallel cuts in the thickness of the gypsum, without touching the cardboard, otherwise the sheet will break. At the same time, a little gypsum should remain near the cardboard. The principle of the frequency of cuts is the same as in the previous method: the smaller the bending radius you need to get, the more often you need to place the cuts. After completing the work with the cutter, the sheet is fixed on the form, the cuts are filled with gypsum putty. In this way, a precise bend of almost any radius can be obtained. Moreover, in this case, the thickness of the GCR is not so important.

Corners and joints between drywall sheets are reinforced and puttied. After that, the seam putty is cleaned, primed and a finishing material is applied.
