Incorporate Antiques

Studio Life/Style

Mixing eras and furniture design periods not only creates personality, but also incorporates old world glamour, even in a new build.

The Design Trends for The Bath Next Year

1

Bold Powder Rooms

Alison Gootee

Small powder rooms are the perfect places to experiment with bold color and pattern, like Katie Ridder did in this Manhattan apartment. The small square footage gives a pattern extra drama, and creates a visual surprise for your guests. As wallpaper continues its newfound popularity into next year, we predict a steady rise of eye-popping powder baths.

2

Antiques

Marcus Ford

Spurred by the combined forces of production delays for new furniture and an eye towards sustainability, vintage and antiques are enjoying newfound popularity. We especially love the creative ways designers incorporate them into bathrooms, like Victoria Ford did with an antique chest that she retrofitted as a vanity using a vintage sink.

3

Fluted Edges

Nathan Schroeder

Fluting is one of the biggest trends on our radar right now, and the look has myriad uses in a bathroom, whether on cabinet drawers, like Huma Sulaiman did here, or with fluted edges on countertops, detailing on backsplashes, and more.

4

Next-Level Millwork

Kendall Photographs

Speaking of fluting, we’re anticipating a rise in millwork details of all kinds. Designer Nina Carbone predicted more detailed cabinetry in kitchens next year, and we’re betting that will move into the bath space too. While you may not go quite as all out as Corey Damen Jenkins did for this “Library Bath,” take this as a sign to add a little oomph to those plain shaker cabinets.

5

Wet Rooms

Tomas Espinoza

In their primary bathroom for the 2022 Whole Home, Mark Williams and Niki Papadopoulos created the feel of a luxury hotel with a statement marble (another trend!) and a spacious “wet room” for the shower, including a bench. We love these extended spaces for many reasons: They tend to be more accessible, making them optimal for aging-in-place, plus they enable the bathroom to be more multifunctional, essentially dividing it into separate rooms without breaking it up visually.

6

Statement Stone

Read McKendree

Williams and Papadopoulos also hit on another look we anticipate going strong next year: bold marble. Take a lesson from Elizabeth Cooper, who proved in this bathroom that, when used right, a natural stone surface can act as de-facto wallpaper.

7

New Wainscoting

Nick Glimenakis

When you hear the word “wainscoting” you may envision a 90s-looking beaded half-wall—but today’s designers are making the look chic again. Take this bath by Eneia White, where a typical half-paneled wall gets a modern, graphic spin with vertical subway tile.

8

Bidets

Finally, we’re here to break it to you: If you’re not on Team Bidet yet, you should be. Once mostly regarded by Americans as a European eccentricity, bidets have now become mainstream, with brands like Toto offering them up built into high-tech toilets, or companies like Tushy selling versions you can add onto an existing toilet. Ceramic tile for bathroom

This is the most standard and familiar option for us – thin plates of any shape and size, made of clay with various fillers (sand, minerals, alabaster, etc.). The mixture is fired at high temperatures, which makes it strong and very durable.

Depending on the composition and nuances of production, ceramics can be of several types:

  • Faience – made from white clay and has a corresponding light color.
  • Majolica – the composition is based on red clay, the material is obtained with large pores, it is covered with glaze on top.
  • Cotto – unglazed, produced with one firing cycle.
  • Cottoforte is double-fired and covered with a thick, opaque glaze. The composition includes several types of clay, so the material is ultra-strong.
  • Metlakh – this type of ceramics is made from special refractory clay, fired at a very high temperature and covered with glaze.

Ceramic granite

Porcelain stoneware is also referred to as ceramics, since the composition is based on the same clay. Together with fillers, it is compressed under the influence of high temperatures into a durable material. Like tiles, porcelain stoneware can be different: glazed, structured, polished, etc. All these types differ in nuances, but in general they have the same characteristics.

Porcelain stoneware is produced mainly in large format, including the possibility of seamless laying. Its design variability is less than that of ordinary tiles: it is mainly an imitation of various natural textures (stone, concrete, wood, marble) and the color scheme corresponding to these materials.

Quartz vinyl

This is a modern material that is technically suitable for the wet area. It is not afraid of moisture and temperature changes, is easy to clean, resistant to mechanical damage, and lasts for decades. In appearance and texture, it is more like a laminate than porcelain stoneware or stone, so quartz vinyl is most often placed on the floor, although it is also possible to veneer walls with it. In addition, the material is warmer to the touch, and it is more pleasant to stand on it with bare feet after bath procedures. Externally, quartz vinyl tiles imitate either wood or stone, so it is best suited for modern interiors in loft, minimalism, contemporary or eco style.

  • Decoration Materials

Quartz vinyl: advantages, pros and cons, comparison with other materials and 30 photos in the interior

Despite the fact that, for obvious reasons, the fashion in decoration changes more slowly than the trends in decoration, there are several anti-trends.

Unsplash

Outdated and irrelevant solutions include:

  • Small colored tiles. This is a mosaic in its purest form, and just a mini-format of squares, which are selected in 2-3 shades and combined in a checkerboard pattern. From such a design of the walls, it only dazzles in the eyes, and the small size, contrary to popular belief, only emphasizes the modest size of the bathroom.
  • Boar. Of course, you can use such a layout, it is not a sign of bad taste, but rather belongs to the classics. But this solution is so popular that many are already tired of it, and designers are increasingly looking for alternatives.
  • Full display. The combination of 2-3 finishing materials has long become the norm. Now on the market there is a huge selection of moisture-resistant wallpaper, plaster and paints. There are beautiful decorative panels that, according to their characteristics, are quite suitable for wet areas. At least you can combine several types of tiles. All four walls, lined with the same ceramics from floor to ceiling, are boring.
  • Light top, dark bottom. The “rule of school uniform” is still actively used in the interior. The floor is most often decorated in dark shades, the walls – in lighter ones. Yes, it makes sense in terms of visual effects, but now is the time to experiment. Feel free to move away from established canons: combine black walls with snow-white ceramics on the floor, make colored lining, select materials to match each other.
  • Sketchy mosaic. Mosaic tiles in general do not look very modern, so making them stylish and modern is not so easy. But the main anti-trend is a mosaic with a schematic pattern of tiles of a different shade, which from a distance resembles an embroidery pattern.

There are many options for fashionable bathroom tiles in 2023: there are many trends to choose from.

Gloss

Design: Karina Seyful-Mulyukova. Photo: . Style: Kira Prokhorova

Glossy surfaces not only look grand and elegant, but also have a very useful optical effect – they reflect and scatter light, thereby visually expanding the space. For small bathrooms, this is an indispensable feature. At the same time, not everyone likes glitter and glare, and for some styles (for example, minimalism and scandi) it is typical to use everything neutral and natural, which gloss definitely does not apply to.

But now such a coating goes beyond pompous classic interiors and looks appropriate even in the most democratic design. And, of course, the main feature that takes the trend to a new level is to combine glossy and matte surfaces in one space. Examples of how such combined tiles look in the bathroom are in the photo below.

Dark walls

If a dark palette in living rooms requires a certain courage, then in the bathroom it is much easier to decide on experiments.

Social networks of designer Nika Bryukva

The color of the walls can be anything: blue-black, graphite, deep blue, burgundy, chocolate, wenge, brown. The environment also depends on your preferences and the overall design idea. For example, you can make the entire finish dark (including the floor, and sometimes the ceiling) or use contrasting accent tiles to highlight the functional area. So that the surface is not too empty, pick up an interesting coating: glossy, reflecting the glare of lamps; marble effect with contrasting veins or wood effect. And remember: the darker the entire palette, the more light should be in the room. Glass and mirrors will also play a role.

Not only marble

Marble finishing has already become a classic solution that used in all styles.

Red Robot Design social networks

But now designers offer to pay attention to high-quality imitations of other stones. For luxurious interiors, translucent onyx or granite is suitable. Porcelain stoneware with the texture of small stone or slate looks great in eco-style and minimalism. If you like the recognizable pattern of marble, choose a custom design, such as high-contrast veining or unusual color combinations.

Tile patterned

Wallpaper in the bathroom has long been a common practice , but still, even moisture-resistant varieties are not the best material for a wet area.

Social networks of designer Anastasia Struve

It is more practical to tile the shower or the area around the sink, but this does not mean that it should be plain or with a repeating pattern traditional for ceramics. Now models with a pattern are relevant, which are assembled according to the principle of a panel. It can be a standard medium format or a small mosaic – now it is experiencing a rebirth. It is best to decorate any one zone with such plot tiles. On all walls, such a finish will look redundant and you will definitely get bored very soon.

Beige color

All non-residential premises have a common problem – lack of comfort. The easiest way to fix this is to add more soft textiles, put indoor plants, decorate the walls.

iRooms studio social networks

But few people plant greenery in the bathroom, and there are usually few places for beautiful decorative compositions. Therefore, in current projects, a more radical approach is increasingly found – to create a warm, enveloping atmosphere in the bathroom with the help of a palette. And here beige enters the scene – a universal color that never loses its relevance, but still at some point became boring to many. Now it is again at the peak of popularity, but in a more modern interpretation: preference is given to its muted natural shades, without yellowness, with gray or light brown. All this is complemented by finishing under natural materials: wood, stone, sand.

6 successful solutions for a small bathroom, which we spied on the designers of

Classic shape

This trend is a real back to basics. The popularity of octagons and flake tiles is gradually fading away, and now designers are increasingly returning to laconic forms.

Social networks of designer Alexey Volkov

The simpler the better: choose the classic square or rectangular models. Preferably monochromatic to bring the minimalism of the finish to a peak. The most standard layout is also welcome, but the rectangles can be “twisted”. For example, tiles laid vertically on the walls in the bathroom look very nice. In addition, this arrangement visually stretches the walls up and thereby raises the ceiling.

Complex shades

Another color trend is the use of complex deep shades.

If a cozy light bathroom is not your story, then the best solution is to go the opposite way and add drama to the design. Choose laconic ceramics, the main decor of which will be the color itself. The most fashionable shades: malachite, ocean blue, eggplant, wine, brick, coniferous. Dilute them with basic tones (classic trio – black, white and gray) and noble textures.

Modern design bathroom tiles: fashion trends for summer 2017

Bathroom design is more than just choosing and buying tiles, it’s probably the most important aspect of decorating your bathroom. Modern bathroom tiles are so diverse that it can be very difficult to make a choice. Facing ceramics vary widely, from classic to natural stone, which, in turn, includes a huge number of varieties of shapes, textures, colors, sizes. Such diversity is dizzying.

When it comes to sizes, there are standard squares and rectangles, but if you want more solid walls or floors in your bathroom, many tile manufacturers will be happy to offer large format wall and floor coverings. Small mosaic tiles give way to larger, easier-to-install pieces.

An abundance of shapes

Of course, each of the tile formats is charming in its own way. Small squares look especially bold in black. Small round tiles give walls a more detailed and dynamic surface. Tile “boar” or rectangular tiles – the standard of classics.

Looking at all these showcase bathrooms, it can be concluded that mixing several tile patterns of different formats can make a bathroom unique. For example, take the W-All tile from the Flaviker factory. The manufacturer lined the entire shower wall with small square tiles made from the same material as the dividing column. The rest of the interior is neutral white and gray. And although each tile has its own pattern, the overall picture is unusually harmonious.

Color

Modern collections of bathroom tiles are very rich in color. In addition, almost every day new shades appear, from natural natural to bright flashy ones. Today, manufacturers are modeling complex solutions, such as the natural patina or rust on metal, or the wear effect from long use.

Visual illusions

The format no longer matters. Clever, tricky tile patterns can make you think you’re seeing hexagons when you’re actually looking at square pieces. Taking the best of classic traditional tile patterns, many manufacturers play with textures and color intensity to modernize them. The result of this are the models you see on the market today. Mixing different textures and geometric patterns in one collection has become another big trend in tile design.

Imitations

Currently, a huge number of tile collections are being produced that imitate any finishing material: wooden parquet, metal sheets, natural stone, fabric, and even crocodile skin. And no matter what you choose, your bathroom will be unique.

Textures

Textured tiles are great for adding dynamism to wide surfaces. If you do not like the massiveness of modern tiles, then textured designs should help to avoid this. There are fine textures and rough ones, they can be either abstract or imitate any surface. A textured surface can definitely make bathroom walls more interesting.

Modern 3D bathroom tiles

3D design will bring more effect to the interior than just textures. Thanks to today’s advanced technology, any three-dimensional shape is possible. 3D wall coverings are really changing the look of modern bathrooms. It’s not just about adding a specific shape. With 3D tiles, you can create designs that surprise.

Beautiful bumps

In addition to textured patterns and three-dimensional shapes, tiles with unusually created bumps can be found on sale, which give them a unique appearance.
