Roof Drainage: Installation Instructions

Contrary to popular belief, melt and rain water damages more than just the roof. If the house is not equipped with a drainage system or it is out of order, precipitation is removed from the roof by gravity, as a result of which the walls of the building become damp, the blind area is washed out, and the foundation suffers. As a result, the operational life of both the roof and the house as a whole is reduced. To prevent negative consequences, it is necessary to organize effective drainage from a flat roof, and then regularly carry out repairs to maintain the system in working condition.

Specializing in roofing works, Krovmontazh LLC provides a truly wide range of services. In particular, by contacting us, you can order the installation, repair and maintenance of drainage systems for residential, administrative, industrial and other buildings.

Materials for drainage structures

Gutter systems are used to drain water from the roof and from the building, which include several components:

  • roof drain gutters;
  • vertical pipes;
  • fastening and connecting elements.

Drainage is not required for single storey buildings with pitched roofs. In this case, the distance between the ground and the eaves is relatively small, and even with a slight wind, the wall does not get wet from flowing water. To secure the foundation, it is enough to make a blind area.

If the house is taller, it is necessary to install drainage gutters under the roof eaves. The gutters are connected by a funnel to a vertical drainpipe. Pitched roof drains are usually made of galvanized steel or plastic. Some products have a protective polymer coating. Less commonly used aluminum or copper structures, because they are much more expensive.

Incorrect installation of the drainage can lead to damage to the outer covering of the roof and its leakage. The waterproofing carpet dries quickly enough after rain, but stagnant melt water can break the roofing material. Moisture that gets inside reduces the functionality of the insulation and leads to other unpleasant consequences. Therefore, a flat roof needs well-organized protection.

Flat roof drain installation

Roof drainage is carried out along a planned route through an internal or external drain. The latter is mounted along the plane of the roof with a slope of 1-5 degrees and directed towards the gutter, which is installed so that water flows into the funnel of the downpipe.

A popular solution is to install an internal drain with electric funnel heating, which requires two conditions to be met:

  • , the water inlets must be firmly attached to the screed under the waterproofing.
  • Two or more additional funnels can be connected to the main riser using pipes. Also, the system can consist of one main funnel and a storm drain.

    Before installing the funnel, seal the area with a waterproofing mat. Installation of branch pipes is carried out in a heat-insulating layer. Pipes are connected to a downpipe or sewer riser.

    Manufacturers of roofing materials offer various types of drains for used and green roofs, some of which can be installed by yourself. In order for the system to work properly, it is necessary to regularly clean the drains, remove dirt, ice, leaves and other debris.

    Drainage from the roof

    Drainage from the roof is a mandatory engineering system for any building, ensuring the timely removal of moisture from the roof of the structure that accumulates on its surface during rainfall or snowmelt.

    The construction market today allows you to create a drainage system from the roof of almost any design, performance and design. At the same time, its installation will not be difficult, since it is enough to purchase ready-made elements of the hydraulic system and assemble them correctly.

    Types of roof drainage

    Regardless of the type and design, drainage from the roof of buildings consists of the following elements:

    • gutter;
    • gutter fastening;
    • funnel;
    • pipe;
    • drain;
    • elbow;
    • plug;
    • pipe fixing.

    When choosing the type of drainage, it is necessary to take into account such building parameters as the roof profile, its design, the area and length of the slopes, the temperature regime inside the room, and the amount of precipitation.

    There are two types of systems that allow you to quickly and efficiently remove water from the roof of a building:

    1. Internal.
    2. Outdoor.

    If the drainage pipes are located inside the building, then this is the first system. With proper installation, internal drainage from the roof works effectively under any temperature conditions in winter, summer and in the off-season. At the same time, the risk of freezing water in the pipes will be minimal.

    A drainage system of this type consists of the following elements:

    • drain pipe;
    • prefabricated funnel;
    • riser;
    • issue.

    Water from the drainage of the internal structure is removed to the sewerage system.

    If the drainage system is mounted outside the building, then it is not intended for operation in conditions of negative temperatures. But, it effectively copes with the large volume of water that enters the roof in the form of rain.

    External drainage is classified into two types:

    1. Disorganized.
      Water is discharged by the weights of the roof eaves.
    2. Organized.
      The collection and flow of water is carried out through the use of special gutters, through which water goes into downpipes.

    Unorganized drainage is rarely used, as it has many disadvantages. Firstly, the flowing water moistens the walls of the house, which leads to a loss in the quality of the building material and a reduction in its service life. Secondly, at negative temperatures, frost can form on the roof, which leads to the destruction of roofing materials.

    If a drainage system is mounted from the roof of an organized type, then the above disadvantages are not so obvious. But, in this case, it is also necessary that the water in the collection and drain system does not freeze. Otherwise, the entire spillway will not work. In those climatic zones where there is a threat of freezing of water in the drainage system, the best way out of this situation is to install special anti-icing systems.

    If the drain pipes are mounted outside the building, then such a design will consist of the following main elements:

    • vertical pipes;
    • plums;
    • trays.

    The choice of design for the collection and discharge of water will depend on the type of roof. So, drainage from a flat roof is the simplest system, since in this case water is evenly collected from the entire surface of the roof. But, if its surface is pitched, then the system will have a more complex design.

    Gutter types

    One of the most important elements of drainage systems is the gutter. Currently, the most common types of gutters for catchment are:

    1. Wall.
    2. Suspended.

    Despite its name, the wall gutter is not attached to the wall, but to the edge of the roof slope, in close proximity to the eaves. The barrier to water in this element of the drainage system will be the sides, approximately 150 mm high.

    The trays themselves must be installed so that they are at an angle to the overhang, providing a reliable flow of water. The tray located at the lower level should hang over the drain funnel. In this case, the water flowing down the roof hits the side of the gutter and goes along it towards the lowest point, which is located at the funnel.

    If it rarely rains in the region where the building stands, then the slope of the gutter may be insignificant – only 2-3 millimeters per linear meter. This is enough to effectively drain water from the roof. But, in order to exclude any possibility of water overflowing over the side, it is optimal to choose an angle of inclination of about 15 degrees. Then the water, with any amount of precipitation, will completely go into the catchment basin. In addition, such an angle of inclination significantly prevents the formation of icicles on the drainage from the roof, does not contribute to the landslide snow from the roof.

    The trays are attached to each other quite simply: with special glue or with a double lying flange. Trays are mounted only after the cornice overhangs are ready.

    Unlike a wall-mounted tray, a suspended gutter is fixed with brackets to the rafters or frontal board. In this case, it is necessary that the tray is located directly under the roof overhang. The bracket is usually a metal hook curved to the shape of the tray.

    If the bracket is attached to the rafters, then it will have deflections of various sizes along the entire length of the overhang. The closer to the downpipe, the greater the deflection. In the case when the bracket is hung on a windboard, it has a deflection of the same size. To create a drain angle, they are simply installed at different levels.

    To correctly calculate the slope of the drain, you need to take into account the total amount of precipitation falling in the region, and their intensity.

    Important! The gutter, through which water will flow into the downpipe, should not be interrupted along the entire length of the slope. In places where it passes over the funnel, they simply make a hole. The size of the hole must match the throughput of the tray.

    Gutter calculation

    The size of a standard gutter, which can be bought at a specialized store, is 3-4 meters. The total footage is determined by the perimeter of the roof. Next, you will need to calculate additional elements of drainage from the roof. To create a reliable drain from the roof you will need:

    • for two trays one connector;
    • one hook for every 60 cm of tray length;
    • caps for each end element of the tray.

    Drainage tray assembly

    Fastening the trays together is quite simple if you use special connectors with upper grips that unite the sides of the gutter. To create corners, special corner joints are used. Therefore, there is no need to cut straight trays to give them an angled shape.

    If the overall design of the trays exceeds a length of 18 meters, then instead of standard connections, an extended one is used, on both sides of which brackets are installed.

    Tray shape and material

    Trays or gutters for external drainage from a flat roof or a pitched roof can be:

    • semi-circular. This is a universal form that is suitable for any type of roof. Trays of this design have good rigidity, capable of withstanding large mechanical loads;
    • semi-elliptical. Characterized by high throughput. An ideal choice for roofing large roofs.

    If we classify the gutter according to the material of manufacture, we will highlight the most popular:

    1. Plastic.
      This is a lightweight and durable material. In most cases, it is covered with acrylic paints that will protect the tray from negative weather conditions and solar ultraviolet radiation. Connect plastic trays to each other using latches or couplings.
    2. Steel.
      For the most part, these are galvanized products. They are connected with locks, staples or latches. Mounted on brackets.
    3. Aluminium.
      The material is varnished or painted to protect the gutter from corrosion. Connect the trays with riveting or special glue.

    Thus, we dismantled the main elements of roof drainage systems, explained their purpose and installation methods.
