Top sunny destinations in 2023/2024

Looking for the sunniest place in the UK? We’ve selected 25 holiday destinations across England and Wales with the best levels of sunshine.

The top destinations are where you are likely to get at least seven hours of bright sunshine a day at the height of summer, and the rest are almost as sunny.

What’s the sunniest place in the UK?

Eastbourne is the sunniest place in the UK with an average of 8 hours of sunshine a day in June, and Bognor Regis is only a little way behind with 7.7 hours of sunshine.

‘Bright’ sunshine is the term used to describe when the sun is not obscured by clouds. It can be quantified in two different ways – firstly as a straightforward ‘number of hours of bright sunshine in the day‘ and secondly as a ‘percentage of the total number of daylight hours in the day‘.

This second indicator is useful because it takes into account day length – the number of hours from sunrise to sunset – so you can compare two places with different hours of daylight to discover what percentage of the day is cloud-free.

Not surprisingly June is usually the month with the most sunshine simply because there are more hours of daylight in June than in any other month.

However if you look for the month with highest percentage figure, this will show overall when conditions are most cloud-free, and for many places in the UK it is earlier or later in the summer.

A new study by Cofton Holidays analysed the latest Met Office records and revealed Britain’s “most consistently hot and sunny holiday destinations”.

After studying the “sunshine hours” and average yearly temperatures over the past 10 years, the data revealed that Torbay is the destination with the most “reliably good weather”.

The area of Torbay, as well as other nearby locations around South Devon, offer holidaymakers the best combination of hot and sunny weather, according to the experts.

Other popular towns with reliably hot weather are Brighton, Bristol, Bath and Cornwall.

The study also named the coolest holiday destinations in the UK, with the “most reliably cool temperatures” found in Yorkshire Dales, the Scottish Highlands and Scarborough.

What do holidaymakers think of Torbay?

In Torbay, south Devon, the most popular town is Torquay, a small and charming seaside village with sandy beaches and “a distinctively Mediterranean feel”.

Torquay is a beautiful spot to visit with rich history, and Agatha Christie spent most of her life in the town writing her novels. Some of the best beaches around Torquay are Meadfoot Beach, Anstey’s Cove and Babbacombe Beach, according to Tripadvisor.

On the travel site, a visitor said Meadfoot Beach is an “unspoiled beach”. They explained: “We love Meadfoot Beach. There is a car park at one end of the road and cafe and toilets at the other which is everything you need for a visit to the beach.

“The beach itself is almost entirely covered at high tide but there is a large greensward within walking distance to retire to for a picnic or run around until the tide recedes. Perfect for a family day at the beach.”

        How to get to Cornwall

Cornwall is a peninsula in the southwest of England, on which the county of Cornwall of the same name is located. The peninsula is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the English Channel and differs from the rest of England in climate: thanks to the Gulf Stream, the winters here are snowless, and the summer months are clear and sunny. Cornwall is considered one of the sunniest places in all of England. Once here, you cannot help but appreciate the contrast with the gloomy overcast rainy London.

Cornwall boasts long sandy beaches, cozy fishing towns, the freshest seafood, amazing nature. Here, long beaches turn into sheer cliffs, and green valleys interspersed with typical English wastelands. The Cornish peninsula is also home to such famous attractions as the Eden Botanical Garden, Land’s End Cape, the Minack Open Air Theatre, the ancient Tintagel Castle, St Michael’s Island Abbey, as well as many natural parks and reserves. Finally, the Cornish peninsula is considered the birthplace of King Arthur.

The county seat of Cornwall is Truro. Truro has a railway station, so getting to the peninsula by public transport is not difficult. However, if you are planning to travel along the coast and visit natural parks, it is better to rent a car for convenience. Read more about all modes of transport below.

By train: usually get to Cornwall either from London or Bristol. The main city of the county – Truro – has its own railway station. Therefore, you can get here by train. The direct train from London takes 4.5 hours and departs every hour throughout the day. Departure is from Paddington Station. From Bristol, the train also takes about 4 hours. Departure is from Temple Meads station. Direct trains between Bristol and Truro run every hour. You can check the current schedule on service Raileurope .

Bus: There is also a shuttle bus from London to Truro three times a day. True, the travel time will be 8-9 hours. Departure takes place from Victoria station in London according to the schedule at 08.30, 13.30 and 23.00.

By rented car: the distance from London to Cornwall is about 450 km. Not everyone will dare to drive such a distance by car, but for those who are ready, a lot of scenic views and places are expected along the way. For example, choosing highways No. M4, M5 you will pass through the Cotswolds region, which is famous for its villages in the old English style; and if you choose highway number A30, you can drive along the famous Jura coast, where you can see all three periods of the Mesozoic on the rocks!

In addition, it is not necessary to rent a car in London. You can take a train to Truro (the administrative center of Cornwall) and rent a car here to travel around the peninsula. In the city center there are offices of such rental offices as Enterprise, Keddy, Europcar. You can book the desired car class in advance through various online services Rentalcars , Discover Cars and other similar ones.

        Cornwall Attractions

Cornwall is a picturesque region of England, surrounded on all sides by water. On the one hand, the peninsula is washed by the Atlantic, and on the other, by the English Channel. It is not surprising that the coast of the county has amazing natural scenery – bays and bays, long sandy beaches and rocky coasts. In Cornwall there are several natural parks located right on the coast, as well as several viewing platforms – at the cape “Earth’s End” (the westernmost point of England) and Cape Lizard (the southernmost point of the peninsula).

Due to the mild maritime climate, the peninsula is fragrant with gardens, and Eden is considered one of the most famous botanical gardens. In addition, many historical monuments have been preserved on the peninsula. Significant sights can be considered the ancient Tintagel Castle and the Abbey of St. Michael, located on an island that can only be reached at low tide. Taken together, Cornwall offers many interesting places to see, whether nature or architecture.

Eden Botanical Garden is a unique location in Cornwall, close to the town of St Austell. The botanical garden is spread over a vast territory of 22 hectares. Thematically, the garden is divided into 3 natural zones – Mediterranean, Tropical and Temperate. The Mediterranean and Tropical zones are located under huge greenhouse domes, the Temperate zone grows in the open air. The domes are designed in such a way as to preserve the unique microclimate necessary for the growth of tropical and Mediterranean plants such as bananas, olives, coffee, bamboo, grapes and others. The territory of the garden is decorated with many sculptures and statues.

Edem Botanical Garden is open daily from 09.45 to 16.00. The entrance ticket for an adult is 32.5 pounds, for children – 10 pounds. The garden is located on the southern coast of the peninsula, 30 km from Truro. You can get there on the A390 via Saint-Austel or on the A30 via Mitchell.

        Stephen Gidley/Cornwall’s Eden Botanical Garden

Lands’ End ( Lands- end) is a rocky shore located on the western tip of the Cornish peninsula, and for many tourists is also a place where you can see the real the edge of the earth washed by the waters of the Atlantic. The place is a unique natural viewing platform. The cape is surrounded by long sandy beaches. So, you should definitely visit the picturesque beaches of Porthcurno, Porthgwarra, Lamorna, Sennen, Gwynver. Some of these beaches are truly spacious – Sennen and Porthcurno; some are in secluded bays – these are Porthgwarra and Lamorna. Well, Gwynver beach is distinguished by large boulders located right on the sand, and excellent conditions for surfing.

Do not think that the cape “Edge of the Earth” is only an observation deck and a vast beach area. Here is located, for example, the open-air theater Minak, which is also worth a visit. So, you can get to Cape “Edge of the Earth” from Truro along the A30 highway through Penzance (the distance will be approximately 60 km).

        Giuseppe Milo/Earth’s End Point, Cornwall

6 km south of Land’s End Point is the Minac Open Air Theatre, . In fact, this is an open stone platform located on a sheer cliff and washed by the sea. From May to September, theatrical performances are held here in the evenings, the rest of the time the place becomes an observation deck open to everyone. The theater was founded here at the beginning of the 20th century. The rocky platform is also surrounded by fragrant gardens. The theater is open to the public daily from 10 am. The entrance fee (including the gardens) is 7.5 pounds. Tickets can be booked in advance on the theatre’s website. You can get here along the highway number B3315 from the cape “Edge of the Earth” (the distance is only 6 km).

James Court/Minack Open Air Theatre, Cornwall

Lizard Point ( Lizard) is another viewpoint on the peninsula, but located on the south coast. The cape offers absolutely bewitching views: rocky cliffs of bizarre shapes, turquoise water, as if on paradise islands, and long sandy beaches, radiating in both directions from the observation deck. Add to this a snow-white lighthouse and the puzzle with an idyllic picture will add up. You can get to the cape from Truro along highways No. A39, A394 and A3083. The distance is 52 km. Near the observation deck there is free parking for cars. Along the way, you can also stop by the picturesque fishing town of Mallion or even spend the night here, as there are beautiful sandy beaches and secluded coves nearby.

        grassrootsgroundswell/Cape Lizard, Cornwall

Ancient Tintagel Castle is a Cornish must-see. Tintagel appeared in the north of Cornwall in the 13th century thanks to the ruling Plantagenet dynasty at that time. The castle is covered with many legends, many of which are associated with King Arthur. To this day, the castle has been partially preserved and is a popular tourist attraction in the northern part of Cornwall. The castle is located in a surprisingly picturesque place, on a rocky cliff, and you can approach it through a suspension bridge. From here you can enjoy truly breathtaking views. Here you can see the fortress walls and the remains of medieval settlements, and later go down to the beach, which is located next to the cape. On the beach you can see a small waterfall, rocks, caves. There is also a panoramic cafe with a terrace.

The castle is open for tourists daily from 10.00 to 16.00 (except for bad weather). The entrance ticket costs 16 pounds. You can get to Tintagel along the A39 highway from Truro (distance is 60 km). Near the castle there is parking for cars.

        Giuseppe Milo/Tintagel Castle Lookout

St Michael’s Abbey Island is an island on the western tip of Cornwall that is only accessible at low tide. The place is mysterious and very picturesque, somewhat reminiscent of the well-known Mont Saint-Michel in France. On the island itself, by analogy, there is the abbey of St. Michael (Michael). The exact date of construction of the monastery is unknown and varies from the 8th to the 11th century. During low tide, you can get to the island on foot, during high tide – on tourist motor boats. On the territory of the island, in addition to the abbey itself, there is also a small village, a pier, a chapel and gardens. The entrance ticket costs 14 pounds. You can get from Truro by car along highway No. A 30 (40 km) to the town of Maraizon, from the pier of which boats leave for the island. There is a car park at the pier.

        John Fielding/St Michael’s Abbey, Cornwall

Cornwall is home to several natural parks and reserves. Roseland Nature Park ( Roseland) is perhaps one of the most famous. Roseland Park is located in the south of the peninsula and is washed by the English Channel. The park has vast sandy beaches washed by turquoise water. Beaches such as Carne, Towan, Portscatho, Pendower, Porthcurnick are popular, although, in fact, there are many more. Roseland Park is only 5 miles from Truro, making it a desirable and accessible place to visit. In addition to Roseland Park, other natural parks are also open to the public on the peninsula: Penshire Point, St. Agnes, Penwit, but they are located on the west coast.

As you can see, Cornwall is a place full of natural attractions. Despite the fact that Cornwall is not yet so well known among foreign tourists, the British themselves like to spend their holidays in this region, mainly due to the mild sunny climate and picturesque natural beauty.

When traveling in the UK, be sure to take out a travel insurance policy, which is mandatory already at the stage of applying for a tourist visa. You can take out insurance on your own without leaving your home. There are special services for this, such as Tripinsurance , Cherehapa and others. You can buy a policy online and then print it on a regular printer.
