The best compact printer enables you to print photos, documents, and more, in high quality, without taking up a lot of space. That’s great when you’re working out of a small home office, and also helpful if you’re taking your printer out on the road. To help you find the right one for your needs, we’ve gathered together the best compact printers available today below.
Note that we’re not talking about the best portable printers here. The way they differ is that compact printers print on ordinary-sized paper, whereas portable printers use smaller, specialized paper. In other words, a compact printer will do pretty much everything a larger printer can, just in a more space-efficient way.
That said, many compact printers are designed with travel in mind. Some can connect wirelessly to your laptop or tablet, and they may even come with rechargeable batteries, so you can use them away from a wall socket.

Connecting easily to your laptop or other device via USB or Wi-Fi, this inkjet printer can manage up to nine pages per minute in black and white, which is not too shabby at all for a portable device, and color pages are delivered at 5.5 pages a minute. It’s also great for taking on trips, as it can be battery powered.
However, note that this doesn’t come with the rechargeable power pack as standard. In some territories you can buy the TR150 with battery as a kit, and others the Canon LK-72 battery is sold separately.

If your main priority is printing photos rather than documents, here’s a great option at a compact size. The XP-8600 is a six-ink printer, and those inks are carefully formulated to enable realistic photo output. What’s more, Epson promises they’ll last 300 years if you put your prints in an album.
Despite being so photo friendly, it’s not bad at printing out documents too. You can print wirelessly and from mobile. As a scaled-down version of a desktop printer, the OfficeJet 250 enables full-sized printing on letter sized plain paper, as well as on glossy photo paper. And it comes complete with a built-in color scanner and color screen, enabling easy photocopying on the fly.

The printer uses a pigment-based black ink cartridge and a tri-color dye-based cyan, magenta and yellow cartridge. Quality is good for color documents, although not the best for photo output on glossy paper.

There’s a built-in battery, and Epson claims this will let you print 50 color or 100 monochrome pages on a single charge. You can power the WF-110W from a wall socket or via USB, and it’s all quite easy to set up. On the downside, it’s not the fastest (7ppm in mono or 4ppm in colour), and its inkjet cartridges aren’t particularly cheap.

How to scan on a Canon printer if it does not have cartridges (video tutorial)
Sometimes there are cases when you urgently need to scan a document, but the printer refuses to do so due to problems with consumables. This especially often happens with Canon inkjet MFPs, which are not equipped with a continuous ink supply system, but use classic low-yield cartridges.
Basically, the Canon printer scanner is an independent part of the printer. Therefore, in theory, it should work even when the printer cannot perform its main function – printing materials.
However, if the MFP has an E3, E5 error or any other problem that is not related to the technical condition of the device, then because of this, the device completely stops functioning, including the scanner. In this article, we will tell you how to make a Canon printer work without cartridges, but only in document scanning mode.
How to scan a document on a Canon printer if it does not have working cartridges models, an error may be signaled by flashing indicators or the appearance of codes U051, U052, U059). The easiest way to get the scanner working is to correct the above problems in the appropriate ways (remove jammed paper or install new cartridges). However, what to do if you need to scan right now, but you can’t get rid of the error. We know really working ways to start a Canon printer scanner that does not have cartridges. It is about them that we will discuss further.
Please note: Take Canon PIXMA MP250 as an example. However, the instructions for starting the scanner will work with many of Canon’s PIXMA series inkjet MFPs.
For example, these methods were tested on Canon MP140, MP150, MP160, MP170, MP180, MP190, MP210, MP240 and MP800 printers, as well as on some MG and TS series devices, everything worked fine.
1. Putting the Canon PIXMA MP250 printer into low-level mode
In normal operation, the Canon MFP will constantly give an error and refuse to function. Therefore, to use the scanner, you need to change the printer mode. This is done as follows:
- Unplug the printer from the electrical outlet (unplug the power cord from the outlet).
- Hold down the On / Off button of the Canon printer and connect the device to the mains.
- While holding the above button, press the print cancel key eight times (for some Canon MFPs, the number of presses may be different, try different combinations from 2 to 12).
- Press the printer on/off button.
This method is guaranteed to bypass errors E3, E5, U051, U052, U059, and start the Canon PIXMA MP250 MFP in restricted mode. We remind you that the printer will still not perform its main function, but the scanner will work in standard mode.
Getting the Canon PIXMA MP250 printer out of low-level mode
If you put the MP250 printer into service mode, the next time it is started, it will enter this mode again (if the printer is turned on and off with the button). Therefore, to switch the MFP to normal mode, you need to turn off the printer by pressing the “ON” button. Then unplug the machine’s power cord from the socket and wait 30-60 seconds. After turning on the printer again, it will automatically enter the standard user mode. In addition, all errors will reappear on the segment display or PC.
2. Starting the Canon PIXMA MP250 MFP scanner by changing the paper jam error code
If the above recommendations did not have a positive effect, then try a slightly different method of using the Canon PIXMA MP250 printer scanner without cartridges.
There is a small but. The next method, which we will tell you about, most often works on devices with problematic or missing cartridges (error code E5). To implement it, you need to do the following:
- Turn off the printer with the corresponding button located on the control panel.
- Remove the cartridges from the printer if they are still installed.
- Hold down the print reset key and simultaneously hold down the On / Off.
- Press the reset button and press it twice (some Canon models are put into service mode a little differently, experiment if nothing works).
- Release the power button and wait until the printer enters service mode (the segment display shows “0”).
- If the scanner still does not start, take a sheet of paper, insert it into the feed tray, and turn off the printer with the button.
- Check that the printer’s grip is lightly grabbing the paper (you need to lightly pull on the paper sheet, if it is in the grip mechanism, you will clearly feel it).
- Start the printer with the On/Off button.
- After some thought, the MP250 MFP will pull the paper sheet.
- Once the sheet reaches the middle, hold it and don’t let it go all the way to the end.
- Initially, the machine will resist a little, but after 10-20 seconds it will give up and change the E5 error to an E3 paper jam.
- Once the printer has calmed down, remove the paper sheet from it and press any button to create a scan copy (b/w or color).
- After rebooting the device, it will automatically enter a special mode, where some of its functions, including the scanner, will work to a limited extent.
Caution: Don’t even try to print anything. Printing will still not function. But the file sent for printing may again return the E5 error and the scanner will stop working again.

When you connect a printer or scanner to your computer, or add a new printer or all-in-one device to your home network, you can usually start printing right away. Windows 11 supports most printers, so you probably won’t need to install specific printer software. Additional printer drivers and support may be available with a Windows update.
If the printer is turned on and connected to the network, Windows will easily find it. The list of available printers can include all printers on the network, such as wireless and Bluetooth printers, or printers connected to other computers that are available on the network. You may need permission to install some printers.

On the taskbar, click the icon Search for , type Printers in the search bar, and then select Printers & Scanners in search results to open system parameter Printers & Scanners .

Next to in the Add printer or scanner field, select Add a device.

Please wait while the computer finds nearby printers. Then select the desired printer and click the Add Device button. If you want to delete the printer later, select it and click the Delete button .

If the printer is not listed, next to The printer I want is not listed , select Add manually , and then follow the instructions to add it manually using one of the options.

If you are unable to connect the printer manually, try to resolve the problem by following the steps in Troubleshoot printer connection and printing problems in Windows.

When using wireless access points, extenders, or multiple wireless routers with separate SSIDs, you need to make sure you are connected to the same network as the printer in order for the computer to find and install it.

If you have a new wireless printer that has not been added to your home network, see the instructions that came with the printer and check the printer manufacturer’s website for more information and the latest printer software.
In most cases, all you need to install your printer is to connect it to your computer. To do this, simply plug the printer’s USB cable into your computer’s USB port and turn on the printer.
