why, more than 100 years after the sinking of the Titanic, people’s imaginations still catch on
900 04 Each anniversary of the tragic events that unfolded on board the most famous passenger liner in history shows that interest in the mysterious fate of the Titanic has not yet been exhausted. And in June 2023, a bathyscaphe with wealthy tourists who went to the bottom of the ocean to see the skeleton of the Titanic with their own eyes disappeared in the Atlantic. Robb Report figured out why people still want to study the main “unsinkable ship” of the 20th century

Around 11:40 pm on April 14, 1912, the then largest passenger ship in the world, the Titanic, collided with an iceberg, resulting in a hole almost 100 meters long in the lower part of the hull of the transatlantic liner. Just a few minutes after the collision, the ship began to slowly but surely sink.
Within the next three hours, the 269-meter giant, dubbed “unsinkable” before its maiden voyage, sank. Of more than 2,240 passengers and crew members, more than 1,500 died early on April 15, drowning in the cold waters of the North Atlantic. The sinking of the Titanic is one of the most incredible human dramas that have played out over the past century. The memory of the luxurious liner has been immortalized in hundreds of books, films about the event have become blockbusters, full-scale copies of the ship have been recreated in several museums, there is even a twin of the Titanic in the Lego game.
Journey to America for a better life
So, why does interest in the saga called “Titanic” continue even 110 years after the ship sank?
“It was a very human story that people can understand,” says Stephen Frazee, Trustee of the Titanic International Society .
At the start of the 20th century, the world’s richest people traveled in luxury ships, and the Titanic set a new standard in the fiercely competitive transatlantic shipping race. It was rumored that the Titanic was trying to break the speed record for the steamship Mauretania, owned by rival firm Cunard.
“People from all walks of life were on board, including people who were trying to get to the shores of America with the hope of a new life. It was a dream ship,” adds the expert.
The Titanic was a British transatlantic steamer that was supposed to take passengers from Great Britain to America. The ship’s passenger list was representative of all classes and classes of American and British society, including the richest passenger, John Jacob Astor IV. The American millionaire and heir to the Astor fortune was on first class deck with his 18-year-old fiancee, Madeleine Talmadge Force.
Other representatives of high society were also on board – the owner of the American hypermarket Macy’s Isidor Strauss and his wife Ida. The millionaire and industrialist Benjamin Guggenheim with his mistress, valet and chauffeur settled in the next first-class cabin. Subsequently, in 1937, the brother of the deceased millionaire Solomon Guggenheim founded the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
During the Titanic’s maiden voyage, representatives of the two companies that built the ship were on board – Thomas Andrews, lead designer and head of the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, and Joseph Bruce Ismay, managing director of the transport organization White Star Line.
In addition to the passengers on the first and second class decks, more than 700 immigrants were also on the lower decks in the third class section. Accommodation conditions on the Titanic were better than on other passenger ships of that time. The shipbuilding company’s expenses for the transatlantic voyage were hefty, but the plethora of tickets sold to third-class passengers, as well as 907 kilograms of mail and cargo, ensured that the trip would pay off and make a profit.
“We are ready to die like gentlemen”
“Titanic is one of the few cases where a historic moment is combined with colorful storytelling. 2 hours and 40 minutes before the ship sank, hundreds of dramatic endings played out on the deck of the ship. Here, history did not need embellishment,” says Bill Sauder, director of the research center at RMS Titanic, Inc.
At the moment when the giant Titanic sank into the Atlantic Ocean with the lights still on, the stories of the rescue of people on the deck of the ship were really dramatic. The evacuation of passengers was chaotic, only women and children were put into lifeboats. The boats were designed for 65 people each, but they were lowered into the water half as full. There were only 16 lifeboats on the entire giant liner, which once again indicates the self-confidence of the construction company that built the unsinkable Titanic.
The stories of the representatives of the wealthy intelligentsia, played out during the tragedy on the night of April 15, 1912, were remembered by the surviving eyewitnesses more than others. The last time the designer of the Titanic, Thomas Andrews, was seen in the first class smoking room, staring at the picture of the ship on the wall. The richest passenger of the Titanic, Jacob Astor, made sure that his fiancee Madeleine got to the lifeboat, and after kissing her goodbye, returned to his cabin. Isidor and Ida Strauss, not wanting to part, because only women were allowed into the boats, went back to their cabin.
American millionaire Benjamin Guggenheim understood the seriousness of the situation and the impossibility of salvation. The industrialist and his valet returned to the cabin to change into tailcoats. The men went down to the central hall and sat at a table, slowly drinking whiskey and watching the disaster. Guggenheim refused the rescue offer.
“We are dressed according to our position and ready to die like gentlemen,” Benjamin Guggenheim replied to the offer of salvation.
Similar stories, recreated from excerpts from the memories of 706 survivors, helped create an entire legend about the Titanic. The story of the wreck was filmed twice, in the 1997 blockbuster Titanic directed by James Cameron, who made a special visit to the wreck before filming, and in the earlier 1958 film A Night to Remember.
The legend of the Titanic continues to live
Today, the sunken Titanic lies on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean at a depth of 3.5 thousand meters. A ship’s hull split in two, much of it corroded from metal-eating bacteria and ever-changing sea currents. Multiple ship fragments, consisting of thousands of passengers’ belongings and ship wreckage, extend hundreds of yards from the wreck.
Numerous expeditions tried to lift the wreckage and even restore the hull of the Titanic. After all the failed attempts, RMS Titanic Inc. was able to lift a 20,000 kilogram part of the hull that broke away from the ship, nicknamed “big piece” with parts of two first-class cabins inside.
But the main part of the legendary ship remained at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, once the largest liner in the world turned out to be too fragile to be disturbed.
“One of the most spectacular sights is the Titanic being swallowed up by the ocean and returning to its original destination, once again providing shelter, but this time to a diverse array of marine life,” said Triton Submarines President Patrick Lahey, who participated in one of the dives to the wreck. “Titanic”.
For nearly two decades, from 1993 to 2004, RMS Titanic Inc. conducted a series of dives, as a result of which about 6,000 items were recovered. Among the wreckage, suitcases filled with things, preserved bottles of wine, washbasins, jugs, bowls, ladies’ mirrors and other personal belongings of the passengers of the Titanic were found.
The wreck was first discovered in 1985 by the Defenders expedition, whose representatives claim that the wreckage of the Titanic will completely disappear from the ocean floor by 2037.
But the legend of the Titanic lives on. There are 12 museums around the world dedicated to the memory of the history of the Titanic. Exhibits from the ship can be seen in small museums of maritime history in France, as well as visit the large-scale exhibition “Titanic: Artifact” in Las Vegas. But the most modern and at the same time historical museum “The Titanic Experience” is located in Belfast in Northern Ireland. The museum is located just a few meters from where the legendary ship was originally launched.
