We’ve lived with our open shelving for 5+ years now and, throughout those years, I’ve gotten asked all about the open kitchen shelves. In a nutshell, adding the wood shelving in the kitchen was an instant charm addition to our space. Yes, you lose closed storage but, to me, they were worth that loss. I have so much fun changing out art on the shelves, styling coffee cups, etc., and really, the shelves just make the kitchen feel bigger and more open.

Let’s Chat Kitchen Storage BEFORE Opting for Open Shelving

Before you jump right in to open shelving, I think it’s a good idea to think about how you store items and what your current kitchen has in regards to storage. I’m a bit of a minimalist when it comes to little appliances and pots and pans. If we had an abundance of tools, serving dishes, etc., then we’d be lacking on the storage by taking down the upper cabinets.

For us, we were willing to sacrifice not having a Kitchen Aid mixer or Instant Pot or a bunch of place settings for 8+ people, for the aesthetic we wanted. Not everyone will value the aesthetic over the items though so I definitely want to point out that, by choosing to have open shelves for the kitchen, we did lose closed storage.

Some people have an abundance of cabinets so it wouldn’t be a big deal to them either way, but I wanted to share my perspective on it.
