Nailing to the skirting allows the laminate to expand and contract and move beneath the scotia. The best effect is achieved by removing the skirting, laying the floor to the wall and re-fixing or replacing the skirting, to the wall only, not the laminate.

The use of nails is best… get yourself a resonable priced electric one that will fire them in for you.
No more nails is an expensive waste of time.

I would say a pin gun but have you considered removing your skirting boards first?
Finish will be far better with laminate fitted approx 10mm away from the wall with skirting on top.
You could try and remove your existing skirting as carefully as possible so not to cause much damage and then re-fit it after flooring done but to be honest,new skirting would be much better if your budget allows.
Hope this helps,
Carl.,

Fixing with a nail gun is the best practice. But nail guns aren’t cheep. And if you are only using it for one job, it isn’t really cost affective. A half decent second hand one will set you back around £150. No more nails or a trade alternative will cost you £2. 50 a tube approximately, from a builders merchant and if applied correctly, will hold for years. Alternatively, you could could pin them by hand, but I suggest that if you are not a regular user of a hammer then drill pilot holes through the bead, carefully hammer the nails in until they are stuck out about 5mm and then using a nail punch, tap them home. This will help you prevent any damage to the floor, beading, skirting caused by stray hammer blows and will give you a similar finish to the nail gun method.

I agree with what Andy said, it always looks much better if you can remove the skirtings, lay your floor then refit.
If fixings beading then nail at an angle into the skirting with fine pins, no fixings into the flooring.

At D Lewis Kitchens & Carpentry we usually remove the skirting, fit the laminate then re-fit or replace the skirting as it looks a better job, however on the odd occasions we have used a trim we have followed the manufacturers advice and that has been to pin the trim to the skirting as this method allows the required movement by the floor due to heat and moisture changes. Hope this helps.Dan

Hi there.
Take skirting off for pro finish.
If you do use beading, use two part mire mate adhesive. Then pin to skirting, pilot drill if needed.
Sorted

Scotia, or whichever beading you use, has two purposes. The first is to cover the expansion gap and the second one is to hold down the flooring. When you fix the beading to the skirting, you need to push it down on the flooring otherwise a gap will appear when any weight is applied. So using an adhesive isn’t really an option.

Best glue/fixing for laminate edging

Hi,
I have laid some laminate wooden flooring at a friends house and just finishing a few bits off then I will add the edging but unsure of best glue. They would prefer glue to small nails. Would some kind of gripfill be best or a spray adhesive?
It is a fairly new house so pretty clean and straight wooden skirting to fix to.
Thanks

Trim could be fixed with mitre mate , near instant. Spray adhesive too weak and grip fill too slow to set.
Would still pin it myself .

Ok thanks I will try the mitre mate and if after time it lifts I will suggest nails.

If you ain’t get a tiny Brad nailer then pin it. Punch them in. Then fill them with same colour filler / silicone.

How to glue laminate flooring
Laminate adhesive is generally not used due to the preferred installation of this floor covering by floating on the substrate, using a specially designed convenient and durable panel locking system. But in certain cases, glue is still used when installing laminated planks, so it’s worth talking about which glue for laminate is best suited and how to use it correctly. This technology is used, for example, when finishing wall surfaces and ceilings with a laminated board. Consider the positive and negative aspects of the adhesive method of laying laminated flooring.
back to contents ↑
Why is it better to use adhesive for laminate flooring installation?
There are several of them:
- adhesive layer levels the base, levels the difference in height levels, but within certain limits. The laminated floor will not sag when walking on it, the locking elements will not wear out, so there will be no squeaks and the service life of the laminated floor will slightly increase;
- increases the resistance of the coating to moisture, since adhesives, as a rule, have water-repellent properties;
- Reducing the load on the locking elements. Many models (early) do not have factory protection of locks from moisture, when glue is applied to them, such protection appears;
- reducing the chance of moisture penetrating to the subfloor.
This is of particular importance when laying panels laid on a plywood layer or OSB if there is a risk of moisture accumulation on the floor.
to contents ↑
Disadvantages of the adhesive way of laying laminate flooring
These include:
- the cost of laying increases due to the cost of purchasing glue and a noticeable increase in the time for finishing the floor;
- walking on the flooring is possible only after the adhesive layer has completely dried, which is at least a day in time;
- almost all adhesives do not withstand significant changes in temperature readings, therefore it is undesirable to combine such a coating on the adhesive layer with floor heating systems;
- It is difficult or impossible to perform a selective repair with the replacement of one or two defective panels.
Before making the final decision on how to lay the laminate with adhesive, we advise you to seriously evaluate the positive and negative aspects of the adhesive version of the planks.

Varieties of adhesive compositions for laminated material
There are several groups of adhesive mixtures that differ in composition:
- Glue is based on synthetic resins. They are characterized by: high adhesion, water-repellent properties, durability and chemical inertness. This type of adhesive is suitable for use in laying laminated panels having a good thickness.
- One component adhesive. This group of adhesives is made on the basis of modern polymers, they do not contain water and solvents. It is easy to use them, it is possible to apply them with any panels. Such a composition can be used as an adhesive for laminate on the wall.
One-component adhesive cures in a very short time. For this reason, adhesive residues must be quickly removed from the surface after laying.
- Two-component adhesive formulation. This is the most durable, but also the most expensive type of glue, characterized by excellent adhesion, durable.
Can be used for high load floors.
- Water-dispersion adhesive. Features a cheaper price. Its main advantage is that it is absolutely safe from an environmental point of view. The glue is intended for mounting laminated planks in a “floating” way: the lamellas are glued to each other without adhesive fixing with the base.
Do not use PVA glue when laying laminate flooring due to its water base, this may damage the coating.
The choice of which adhesive to glue the laminate to is determined by the composition of the adhesive and the characteristics of a particular room: its purpose, type and condition of the subfloor, the degree of load on the floors, climatic indicators inside the room, etc.

How to choose which adhesive is best for laminate flooring
To decide which adhesive you need for laminate flooring, you need to pay attention to the characteristics and characteristics of your room, the characteristics of the adhesive mixture:
- water resistance is a defining criterion choice of adhesive composition for mounting lamellas;
- good adhesion to the substrate surface, this will ensure the strength of the laminate flooring;
- resistance to sudden changes in temperature values;
- ecological harmlessness of the adhesive mass – it is definitely necessary that volatile compounds dangerous to human health are not present in its composition;
glue curing time.
When deciding how to glue the laminate when laying, you should pay attention to the brand of the adhesive, the manufacturer, what is the shelf life of the adhesive, which is also important.
back to contents ↑
Floor base
It is either concrete or covered with plywood sheets or OSB boards. Each of the bases has its own characteristics, features. How to glue laminate to concrete or wood? When choosing an adhesive composition, it is necessary to find out for which materials and in which rooms it can be used.
to contents ↑
Purpose of the room
Depending on the intensity of impact on the floor, the strength of the decorative coating is determined. When decorating with laminated floor boards in an office, commercial or entertainment facility, the adhesive layer must be high-strength and have excellent adhesion. For a residential area with low traffic, such as a bedroom, the requirements for the adhesive mixture are lower.
Water resistance
When using laminate flooring indoors, where direct contact with water is possible, all possible methods of protecting the floor must be used. If glue is already used for laying panels, then it should be able to seal the joints to the maximum and prevent water from entering the locking elements and the subfloor.
back to contents ↑
Resistance to sudden changes in temperature readings
This primarily applies to the use of adhesive installation of laminated boards with floor heating systems. For such a mode of further use of the coating, the requirements for glue are more stringent: elasticity, no cracking and resistance of the adhesion index with the surface to sharp fluctuations in temperature inside the room.
back to contents ↑
Glue hardening time
The duration of laying the floor covering, our convenience, depends on this time. The formation of a film on the applied adhesive layer significantly impairs the bonding strength. When choosing glue, you should pay attention to its curing time.
Currently, manufacturing companies offer a fairly wide range of adhesives for laminated material. It is difficult to choose the right one from a wide variety. You need to have at least a small amount of information. Here is a list of adhesive mixtures that are most popular.

Laminate floor adhesive can be used:
• to seal laminate joints without fixing the panels to the subfloor;
• for fixing laminate panels with glue to the floor.
Consider these options.

Use of glue for gluing panel joints
Is it necessary to glue laminate panels when laying
We lay laminated boards on a concrete base on the substrate layer, glue is applied only to the panel joints to increase the strength of the connection.
- The prepared, leveled base must be cleaned.
The process of preparing, leveling a concrete base and laying a laminate floor is described in detail in the article:
How to lay a laminate on a concrete floor using underlay
- Spread the underlay on the floor. It is necessary when mounting laminated planks.
To prevent the backing layer from moving during the installation of the coating, the strips can be fixed with adhesive tape to each other.
- Next, we start laying the lamellas on the principle of brickwork with offset joints between the rows. Each laminated board is equipped with locking elements. Before applying any adhesive to the sides of the panel, you must first clean their surface from dust. Before connecting the lamellas, carefully apply a small amount of glue to the locks. If glue appears on the front surface, remove it immediately. After gluing the boards, it is necessary to press something tightly for 15 minutes.
- Lock the panels together until they click into place.
- Remove adhesive that has penetrated the surface of the board with a soft cloth, preventing it from drying out. The first board is not attached to the wall, but is glued only to adjacent boards. Do not forget to leave a technological gap between the extreme row of boards and the wall.
Work with glue should be in the temperature range of 15-20 degrees, these are the most favorable conditions for its drying while maintaining strength.
Lay all rows in this way. Wait for the glue to dry completely and only then start using the floor.

How to glue laminate to the floor
Let us remind you once again that this method is outdated for a long time. Modern panels are equipped with reliable locks designed to facilitate the installation process and improve the operation of laminated coatings.
So, how to glue laminate flooring?
Choose and buy enough glue. This amount is determined by the size of the room, the base material and its condition (for a rough surface, the consumption of glue increases), the rate of consumption of glue. We recommend purchasing a quantity of glue with a small margin, approximately 10% more than the consumption indicated on the can.
Keep packages with panels indoors for at least 24 hours to adapt to specific climatic conditions.
OSB surface cleans well.
Think again: do you need to glue the laminate to the floor.
The sequence of your actions:
- Determine the layout of the panels, their number depends on this. It should be borne in mind that the joints of adjacent rows must be offset by at least 30 centimeters.
- A layer of adhesive is applied to the surface of the OSB boards and leveled with a spatula. Do not try to make the ridges perfectly even; when laying the panels, the thickness of the adhesive layer will even out.
- The first plank is laid, starting from the corner of the room farthest from the entrance.
If necessary, you can correct the panel by leveling. The rest of the boards are laid in the same way.
It is not recommended to apply the adhesive layer on a floor area that is too large, it is more correct to cover the floor space with adhesive under one row of panels.
When working with glue in a plastic container, one corner should be cut, apply glue with a “snake” on the panel or on the base. It turns out to be faster to install. Many professionals lay the panels on a wavy line of adhesive on the floor. The quality of laying the coating does not decrease, and the speed of work increases significantly.
The adhesive method of laying laminated planks is more often used when finishing (pasting) walls and ceilings with laminate. This technique of interior design has become increasingly used, especially when decorating walls and ceilings in the kitchen. Even a kitchen apron made of laminated boards looks beautiful and original. What kind of glue is better to glue the laminate on the wall? Above, we talked in detail about the types of adhesive compositions, their properties and gave the names of the brands.
For details on how to glue the laminate on the ceiling, on the wall: horizontally or vertically, how to stick the laminate on the wall, read the article: Laminate on the wall and ceiling of the kitchen
Not so long ago, a new material began to gain popularity, which can be described as something between a laminate and linoleum, this is PVC or vinyl laminate. This material has a lot of advantages: beautiful appearance, high degree of strength, absolute indifference to the effects of water (!), compatibility with floor heating systems.
There are two versions of this cover: with and without locking systems. So, panels without locks are flexible and are laid on the floor only with an adhesive method, this is an adhesive laminate. Among the plates without locks, there is even such a variety: a flexible adhesive-based PVC laminate, that is, the adhesive layer has already been applied to the tile and covered with a protective film, which should simply be removed during installation, and no glue needs to be applied.
Read more about this type of coating, its installation methods, and its operation in the article: What is vinyl (PVC) laminate
, in which cases it should or, conversely, should not be used, talked about the types of adhesive compositions, their characteristics. Now it’s up to you to decide whether to use glue when laying the flooring, and which adhesive is best for laminate flooring is your choice.
Laminate adhesive – purpose, price and application technology
mycreations November 12, 2015 Flooring No Comments
Laminate flooring can be made according to different technologies, depending on the type of connection of the lamellas to each other. To date, two types of construction are most common – these are panels with a locking connection and webs with a standard tenon-groove fixation.
For both types of laminate flooring, a laminate adhesive can be used to meet and provide a range of processing properties that affect the life of the material.
Contents of the page

- 1.1 Basic types and rules for choosing adhesives
- 1.2 Brief overview of manufacturers and costs of compounds
- 1.3 Tips for working with glue and laminate
- 1.4 Read also:
The main function and task of the adhesive composition when laying laminate is to fix the lamellas by a reliable connection between the mounting “groove” of one sheet with the “spike” of another.
That is, the adhesive is used to connect all the lamellas into a single sheet. Moreover, the laminate is not fixed to the floor. The overall design remains “floating”, subject to mounting and temperature clearances.
Previously, this technology was used everywhere due to the high cost and inaccessibility of material with a locking type of connection. Now such solutions are of an individual nature, since laminate with a tongue-and-groove connection is used less and less, due to its special and not very convenient laying technology.
Filling the joints between the lamellas allows to achieve a high level of tightness and tensile strength
If we make a more detailed comparison, then the connection with fixing compounds has a number of advantages:
- strength – after the adhesive dries, high tensile strength is achieved, sufficient for daily use of the coating for 8-10 years;
- durability – subject to all technological conditions, the average service life of a coating with an adhesive method of connection is higher than a similar coating with a lock fastening system;
- reliability – the substances included in the adhesive provide reliable protection of the coating from moisture and dirt ingress into the seam between the lamellas.
The main and most significant drawback is that it is impossible to dismantle and reuse previously used canvases.
Among other disadvantages of this approach, one can note the impossibility of using the coating immediately after installation work, since the average drying time of the adhesive is 16-24 hours from the moment of application. It is strongly not recommended to use adhesives in conjunction with underfloor heating and underfloor heating systems.
Related article: Moisture resistant laminate in the bathroom.
Additionally, it can be noted that modern types of household laminate with a locking system allow the use of glue and other binders to protect the coating from moisture. But before using this method, it is worth weighing all the “pros” and considering all the disadvantages of such a solution.
Basic types and rules for choosing adhesives
One of the most important criteria when choosing an adhesive or fixative is a product manufactured to be used with residential laminate. That is, adhesives for tiles, parquet or other wooden surfaces will not work.
The use of adhesive mixtures is possible both for the tenon-and-groove system and for interlocks
This point is the most important, since there are cases of using adhesive mixtures that are unsuitable in their properties and qualities, which in turn affects the quality and overall operation of the coating, far from being for the better.
The following types of adhesives are available for use with laminate flooring:
- Synthetic resin based, long lasting agents that provide a high strength bond with high water repellency and water wicking properties. They are used for coating with a lamella thickness of more than 14-16 mm;
- one-component polymer-based – high-strength and elastic compounds without inclusions of water and other solvents. They are odorless, easy to apply and then remove when necessary;
- two-component polyurethane-based – the most popular compounds for working and joining laminated coatings. Do not require preliminary grinding and priming of working surfaces. Dry quickly, provide the most reliable and tight connection;
- water-dispersion – universal mixtures, with a different set of characteristics, including water removal, increased moisture resistance, hiding seams, etc. It can be used in conjunction with underfloor heating and underfloor heating.
When choosing a suitable composition, it is worth considering and taking into account the requirements that apply to the future coating. For example, for a children’s room or kitchen, it is not advisable to use mixtures containing a large amount of synthetic components and solvents.
For utility rooms or storerooms, it is not at all necessary to use expensive adhesives with a wide range of useful properties and qualities – the main requirement is the reliability and tightness of the joint.
For private applications, it is recommended to look for environmentally friendly products with high adhesion properties. It is desirable that the composition has water-repellent properties and a high service life.
Particular attention should be paid to how the composition is applied and how the surface is cleaned in case it does not get on the work surface. In general cases, adhesive mixtures and sealants from foreign manufacturers meet these criteria.
Compound Manufacturers and Costs at a Glance
Most popular and proven adhesives for laminate flooring
Modern manufacturers offer a wide range of adhesive compositions with a different range of technological qualities. Almost all products from the middle and high price category are of good enough quality and are suitable for most types of household laminate.
Cheaper mixes don’t always meet specifications. Often they do not correspond to quality at all, which can lead to damage to the laminated coating. When buying, especially in private retail outlets, we recommend paying attention to more expensive and proven brands.
Among such solutions, products of the following brands can be noted:
- Laminat KLEO is an elastic adhesive without solvent additives. Easily cleaned in case of hit or extrusion from the working cavity.
Apply with excess at a temperature of +15 ° C on a dry, clean and fat-free surface. Average consumption: 0.33 l bottle per 15 m2;
- Bostik Clic Protect is a sealant or gel-sealing compound for joints in laminate, parquet and parquet boards, cork floors and other finishes with a locking system. Available as an elastic mixture without color. It is harmless, does not leave marks and stains, dries quickly and protects the coating well from moisture. Average consumption: tube 124 ml per 15 m2;
- Click Guard is a transparent sealant for laminate and parquet. Possesses moisture protective properties, prolongs service life of a floor covering. Recommended for use in children’s rooms and rooms with a long stay of children. Average consumption: tube 130 gr per 8 m2.
In addition to the above compositions, there are many other products that differ both in price and quality. These mixtures are tested personally in practice. In addition, they have many positive reviews that can be found and read on the Internet.
Below is a table containing prices for adhesives and sealants for laminate flooring.
Composition name | Cost (rub) |
---|---|
Laminat KLEO, 0.33 l | 110-130 |

Adhesive and laminate tips
To begin working with the adhesive, carefully read the instructions printed on the product packaging or enclosed in the packaging with the formulation. The instruction should contain such important technological steps as preparing the surface for work, methods and technology for applying the adhesive mixture, removing excess and storing the product.
The underlay allows you to eliminate small differences in height on the floor surface and avoid the appearance of extraneous sounds when walking
In addition to the recommendations from the adhesive manufacturer, it is strongly recommended that you study the process of preparing and laying laminate flooring. Basically, this is the preparation of the base by eliminating irregularities, removing dirt, etc.
The general technology of working with adhesive composition can be represented as follows:
- Substrate preparation in progress. The maximum deviation in height relative to the horizon should not exceed 3 mm per 1.5-2 m2. In other cases, a thin-layer screed is poured or a wooden floor is hauled.
- A polyethylene foam or natural cork pad is spread over the prepared base. The joints between the canvases are glued with mounting tape. Excess material is trimmed with a construction knife.
- Selects how the laminate is to be installed. For diagonal laying, the first canvas is prepared at the corner of the room. With other methods, you can start laying with a solid lamella.
- The first row of slats is laid with a groove to the adjacent wall.
A temperature gap of 1 cm must be observed. An adhesive composition is applied to the end groove of the first panel in the required amount indicated on the package. The second panel is inserted with a shunt into the groove of the first panel and is well pressed down and lined with a pre-prepared bar. Then the process is repeated until the first row is completed.
- After pressing, the adhesive will come out along the line of the seam or joint between the lamellas. The packaging with the adhesive composition indicates how to remove the product. As a rule, this is removal immediately after the installation of the panel or after complete drying with the help of special mixtures.
- Once the first row is completed, the second and subsequent rows can be installed. The second row is mounted with offset joints, so the first panel in its row should be sawn in two, so that the offset of the joints is more than 30-35 cm.
It is recommended to thoroughly sweep or vacuum the floor surface before flooring
To insulate the base, you can use ordinary polyethylene film with a density of 100-1500 microns
The end panel in the first or second row must be laid in such a way that further joint offsets are formed
