James Martin’s mansion goes on the market

The sprawling Hampshire mansion owned by TV chef James Martin hit the property market, and this seven-bedroom country pile deserves a proper tour. While Charters Estate Agents didn’t list an official asking price, reports say it was going for upwards of £3million. Take a look inside and see what a chef’s kitchen really looks like...

Through the keyhole with our favourite TV chef

jamesmartinchef. co.uk

From his decade long role at the helm of the much-loved BBC cooking show Saturday Kitchen to Home Comforts and a UK tour, James Martin’s career has been nothing short of remarkable. During much of his climb to the top, he’s lived in the same stunning mansion in a small village called Stoke Charity, not far from Winchester in Hampshire.

Time to move on

On the market

The star of ‘Saturday Morning with James Martin’ has lived in the detached country house for nine years. Set on around 1.25 acres of land, the building was originally a dairy but was redesigned by a renowned local architect using local tradesmen and materials to James’ own specifications.

Setting the tone

On the market

James Martin is known for his love of the finer things in life: fast cars, flashy jewellery and his décor is no exception. This Ralph Lauren humbug striped paper in the hallway sets the tone for the rest of his extraordinary property. On a marble table at the centre of this entrance prowls a bright pink crystal panther, proving this cook is not afraid to show his wild side. The walls throughout the house are decorated with Farrow & Ball paint and adorned with artwork, much of which pays homage to James’ obsession with classic cars.

A chef’s kitchen

On the market

As you’d probably guess, the kitchen is one of the biggest and most impressive rooms in the house. Designed by Jane Cheel, the bespoke kitchen balances modern country elegance with practicality, with fitted electric ovens, a gas hob and all the latest chef commodities such as a built-in chopping board, inbuilt deep fat fryer and a rotisserie oven.

High-end designer touches

Jane Cheel Furniture

The fitted appliances and ample storage make this space perfect for a busy cook and everything is top of the range, including the Sub-Zero wine coolers, fridges and freezers.

James Martin’s biggest fan

Jane Cheel Furniture

Even crammed full of gadgets the kitchen is a beautiful space, with oak flooring curved windows overlooking the garden and a large Belfast sink. Above a beautiful kitchen island this bespoke copper hood holds a Wessex Ducting kitchen ventilation system complete with an external fan to reduce noise – perfect for when he sears a steak!

Open-plan living

On the market

The family room shares an open-plan space with the kitchen, however it can be separated for more cosier living with a screen. The oak floors and remote-controlled gas fire make this room the perfect place to relax.

A room designed for doggy downtime

The TV chef is known for his love of dogs and a quick glance at his Instagram feed is full of pictures of his treasured pet Ralph. In this pic, the pair are putting the living room sofas to top use. Luckily, when the need to nap hits hard the living room (and cinema and master bedroom) all have remote control blinds fitted into the double glazing.

Leading to the outside

On the market

The chef obviously loves being outdoors and so it’s no surprise that there’s space for alfresco dining. The bi-fold doors lead out to the terrace and expansive garden. The wooden decking has a large seating area with a wood-fired pizza oven and fridge.

Gorgeous views

The house’s superb location brings with it many perks, including a country lifestyle and beautiful views across the Hampshire landscape. The grounds of the house are large and very private; a suite of security features includes a new bespoke alarm and CCTV system, with a link straight to the police.

Outside oasis

On the market

The idyllic rear gardens, which are extremely private, overlook fields and paddocks. James has proudly grown a vegetable garden, which can be reached through a mulberry tree-lined path. There’s also a hot tub, which can’t be seen from the house, and the whole garden has fully programmable lighting so the new owners can set the mood before a relaxing soak.

A luxury gazebo

On the market

A fully-furnished, fully heated thatched gazebo sits in the centre of the garden with a television screen and a drinks fridge for a year-round alfresco retreat. Known as a Breeze Hut, this part pod looks out over the lush lawns, which are laid with Rolawn Turf similar to that used at Wembley Stadium. According to the listing, James plans on leaving this hut furnished for the next lucky owner.

The original house

On the market

Overlooking the magnificent gardens is the glass orangery, which is part of the original house. The 17th century doors, reclaimed from a French Chateau, lead to the first floor, where the open-plan room is located.

The master bedroom

On the market

Also situated on the first floor are seven bedrooms. The master suite has a large dressing room with built-in wardrobes and a balcony. It even has a steel door turning it into a de facto safe room. The ensuite bathroom has a double shower and freestanding bath with a television screen and if that’s not all, there’s another surprise in store…

James Martin’s bedroom secret…

James Martin / Facebook

It’s no secret that this convivial cook likes a drink but does he really have his own beer tap in his bedroom? The listing doesn’t mention it, but on doing a little bit of wallpaper analysis between his bedroom and this picture he posted on Facebook captioned ‘Home comforts’, we want to believe that he does. More likely it’s part of the cinema/games room, which has its own bar and built-in play stations.

Space for guests

On the market

The second bedroom, which is perfect for guests, has been decorated with an oriental theme. It also has an ensuite bathroom and spacious floor plan.

Separate living

On the market

The stairs lead up to the second floor, which could easily be a large self-contained flat. Already split into two areas, a gym leads through to this double bedroom with sloping ceilings and two side skylights. While this is definitely a bright and charming space, the wallpaper might be a little challenging for any new owners…

The floorplan

This floor plan shows the layout and size of the 6,739 square foot house, with a number of additional outbuildings extending the space on the ground floor.

The second floor is also where the TV chef hosts guests for his ITV weekend cookery show ‘Saturday Morning with James Martin’.

Lights, camera, action

The show sees the popular chef prepare inspirational recipes alongside big-name guests from the worlds of entertainment, food and sport.

The show kitchen is packed full of stainless-steel appliances and has a built-in chopping board for the guests to help cook dishes, as well as having enough space for the camera equipment and lighting. The open shelving along the back is filled with trinkets such as classic car models, which James is a huge fan of.

Cookbook photo shoots

The test kitchen is also used for shooting recipes for James Martin’s hugely successful cookbooks. In this shot posted in October 2016, you can see how much work goes into creating the perfect plate to sit alongside his recipes. The space must have paid for itself ten times over by now!

The house comes with two large garages, befitting Martin’s obsession with all forms of motors including his motorbikes and classic cars.

Space for a collector

With a huge range of vintage cars, sports cars and collectable icons like his red Mini Cooper, James Martin’s country pile is as much a car park as a home!

James Martin’s house in Hampshire is for sale for a rumoured £3.

75million

When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. Here’s how it works.

A sprawling Hampshire pad owned by everyone’s favourite TV chef (sorry Jamie) has just gone on the market. Located just outside Winchester, James Martin’s home is as mouth-watering to look at as one of his delicious dishes. And one thing we can guarantee is that it won’t cost Asda prices!

According to the property’s particulars, the building was originally an old dairy house. James bought it nine years ago, and set about renovating and extending it, using local tradespeople and materials. It now boasts seven bedrooms, several stunning reception rooms and three garages for car-mad James’ collection of classic vehicles.

As you’ll see as we go round, James can’t resist a statement wallpaper – and here, he’s gone as far as to use it on a door. Many of the designs are by Ralph Lauren, including this bold Spalding Stripe.

As you might expect, James has a VERY fancy kitchen with some pricey appliances. They include a huge Sub-Zero fridge-freezer, Wolf ovens, a wall-mounted rotisserie and a built-in deep fat fryer, all housed within bespoke cabinetry by local kitchen designer Jane Cheel.

The kitchen opens out into this large family room, with bi-fold doors leading to the garden. It’s one of the few rooms where James hasn’t used a striking wallpaper – instead, the star of the show is a cheeky Penguin Books canvas by artist Harland Miller.

Elsewhere on the ground floor is this charming timbered orangery idea, which James uses for entertaining. We definitely wouldn’t turn down a dinner invitation!

In the master bedroom, there’s more evidence of James’ love of cars and motor racing. A leather-upholstered, Chesterfield style bed gives the room a masculine edge.

James hasn’t held back in this guest room, which is full of bold prints… and houses a huge fish carving. As a scheme, we’re not sure that it’s highly conducive to sleep!

A mix of French and oriental pieces give this bedroom a more restful, feminine look.

The garden is just as impressive as the main house. In it, you’ll find a hot tub and this fully furnished gazebo, as well as a pizza oven on the terrace. James has even laid the lawn with the same turf used at Wembley Stadium, making it perfect for a kick about.

Though it’s advertised as Price On Application, rumour has it that Mr Martin’s home is on the market for £3.75million, through Zoopla and Charters Winchester.

We wonder where the proud Yorkshireman will be moving next? Perhaps he’s planning a return to his roots? Just don’t forget to invite us to the housewarming, James!

Harry Herbert, godson of Queen Elizabeth II, married a chef

Irish chef and TV presenter Claude McKenna became the chosen one of the Honorable Harry

One of the many godchildren of Queen Elizabeth II tied the knot this weekend The Honorable Harry Herbert, writes the Daily Mail.

The Queen’s godson Harry Herbert married Irish chef Claude McKenna. The fabulous wedding took place in Hampshire at the luxurious Highclere Castle, which is perhaps the most famous estate in Britain. After all, the series Jeeves and Wooster, Downton Abbey and Midsomer Murders were filmed here.

The place was not chosen by chance. Harry Herbert, Her Majesty’s godson, Chief Executive of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing and The Royal Ascot Racing Club, descended from the owners of Highclere Castle. Herbert’s father, Lord Porchester, 7th Earl of Carnarvon, was a close friend and racing manager of the Queen from the age of 19.69 years before his death in 2001.

Now, we recall, Highclere Castle is owned by another godson of Queen Elizabeth, George Herbert, 8th Earl of Carnarvon.

McKenna, 46, chose a white embroidered dress with a long veil for the ceremony, while Herbert, 62, opted for a three-piece suit. The wedding was held in the traditional English style – the 62-year-old groom and 46-year-old bride arrived at the chapel of St. Michael and All Saints in an open carriage, the flower girls were in wreaths of carnations, and the tables were set in the garden. The cake, by the way, was created by confectioner Claire Ptak, who was responsible for the wedding cake of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Among the guests were former chancellor George Osborne with his fiancée Thea Rogers and son Beau. Also in attendance were Irish host Laura Whitmore, photographer Hugo Bernand and editor Martin Frizell. Musical accompaniment was provided by singer Imelda May, who flew to the ceremony by helicopter.

Claude and Harry met through a group of friends while shopping at Fortnum & Mason in 2017. Three years later, they announced their engagement. Harry divorced in 2015 after 25 years of marriage and has three children.

The happy newlyweds will live on the territory of the estate – in the 300-year-old Broadspur House cottage.

Home. Writers. Part 1

Not so long ago, I read Neil Gaiman’s book “The View from Cheap Seats”, a kind of
collection of prefaces, articles, interviews and speeches of the writer. In one of the articles he
described his house in the style of the Addams family, then there was a funny comparison of the house
Stephen King with a bunker. In general, I became interested in how and where they live
people are creative, creating whole worlds in their heads.

I offer gossip girls a selection of “House of Writers”, in several stages
houses of modern writers, classics of world literature will appear, and
of course, Russian writers and poets.

Let’s broaden our horizons, who lived in a cozy apartment in the center of the metropolis, or in
hidden from the eyes of a cozy farm.

In the comments you can write your ideas and suggestions, I will be very grateful!

Stephen King and his wife Tabitha bought the house in 1979 and have since
since they spend most of their time in it, only for the winter period
moving to warm Florida.

The old (built in 1870) mansion is hiding
behind black wrought iron gates with bats and dragons.
It is not surprising that the writer’s fans simply cannot pass by.

From the inside, the mansion is much larger than it looks from the outside.
It has 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms, there are even
swimming pool and garage for 3 cars. Steven’s office is located
in the back of the building, you won’t be able to see its windows from the road.

If you look at the house from the street, it’s hard to even imagine
how big is it.

Together with his wife, King donates large sums of money to beautification
city, helps libraries and hospitals, finances a baseball stadium
and co-owns a local rock radio station.

The author’s novels often describe the small town of Derry, located
next to Bangor. King himself once admitted that Derry is not a completely fictional city. Describing
him, he meant his native Bangor.
