How to write a building quote examples: Use or copy for better building quotes
Use or copy for better building quotes
Why don’t we all have amazing building quotes examples already?
Building quotes are critical documents for every company working in the construction and building industries.
Building and construction are industries which rely heavily on quotes and tenders, primarily due to the nature of their work: being project-based and delivered over a reasonable length of time. And building quotes are the glue and formal mechanism for bringing two or more parties together to agree on a price which works for those parties.
Given the importance and frequency of quoting in the building trade, you would think that companies and workers would have a smooth quoting process which is streamlined and professional.
But the truth is that managing quotes, especially in the face of thousands of other urgent moving pieces isn’t easy. And construction companies don’t specialise in document or quote management like more sales or marketing oriented companies.
This is why not all building companies have amazing building quotes examples (nor do many companies in other industries either).
Because of this, many construction and building companies look for reliable and professional examples and frameworks which they can use and leverage for their own quotations.
We are here to offer you a few building quotes examples which can be copied or used for your building quotes.
Every company’s quotes are a little bit different, just as their projects are different, so these building quote examples are flexible and customisable for you too.
Read on to see and use the examples.
Building quotes examples
It’s really helpful to look at other building quotes examples when assembling your own quote template.
But using these exisiting templates and samples properly is it’s own art. You have to figure out which part of which frameworks you like, and incorporate them into your master template which you can use across all or most of your projects.
The more standardised your document becomes, the more reliable and predictable your outcomes will become too.
You don’t want to lose a single job due to the quality or layout of your quote. You only want to lose jobs because you are too expensive or too cheap.
So let’s jump into the building quotes examples.
The first one of the building quotes examples below is for a new apartment build.
What you’ll notice after looking through these two quote examples, as well as many others, is that there is a few critical pieces of information which your building quote needs, and the rest of the document is made or broken by its formatting.
The main components of every building quote are:
- Record keeping information like who the quote is prepared for and the site or project in question
- The cost/estimated cost section of the quote, which forms the meat of the quote
- Some information in regards to the project schedule and/or timeline
- The quote requirements, terms and conditions
- Quote signoff
The main differences which you will encounter across different building quote examples is the level of detail in regards to the scope of work or project schedule.
Some clients and asset owners will demand a lot of detail in their quotes, while some suppliers will include this detail. The makeup of this section will be largely dependent on how many other documents are being provided and dealt with during the planning and delivery phases.
What’s really important about this specific apartment building quote example is the level of detail provided in the cost structure breakdown. The format of this document makes it possible for the quote preparer to include very specific parts of the project costs, and group them into understandable categories. This framework is also infinitely flexible, so the building company can easily add new table subitems to the quote, or create new categories for different types of projects.
The purpose of a building quote is to communicate how much something will cost, and to make it seem like a good deal. Asset owners and operators can be easily confused and can quickly become suspicious and untrusting of quotes which don’t go into sufficient detail.
Your number one goal in creating a building quote, and in establishing your building quote framework, is to appease the client or receiver of the quotes worries – and help them feel like you are being fair and transparent.

Another building quote example
It wouldn’t be fair to give you only one building quote example, so there is another example and different type of framework for you to look at below.
This example was used for a large scale construction and building project on some main roads.
As noted before, the main difference between this quote and the other example is that this template has much more focus on the scope of work and project description.
Because of the scale of this project, the cost breakdown (which is on page 2), is in much broader categories – and much bigger numbers.
The scale of these projects is so large, that diving into too much detail around labour and materials would be unwieldy and problematic. Contractors do their math on the costs and cost breakdowns, and then commit to delivering the project within those bounds. In this case, they bear a lot of the cost and financial risk.
Because of the scale of this type of project, there is also some additional detail around major equipment and the payment terms. These type of projects can span many years, so some quotes will flag payment terms as well.
You may be more comfortable using or copying a building quotation example like this, or you may prefer the previous table and cost-heavy example before.

How are these building quote examples created, managed and exported?
Creating, managing and sharing your building quotes can seem like a serious mission at times.
Maybe you have to create a template in word, fill that out, export that into PDF, and then send it via email. And then you have to rinse and repeat the process for your next quote as well.
Luckily there are easier and smarter ways to manage these documents.
The building quotes examples you saw above were both created in and exported with Dashpivot.
A smart document management software like this enables companies to digitise their quoting process from start to finish.
These means that they can create an entirely digital template, which can be completed and then exported in a PDF document inside of one system. This removes the need to jump back and forth between systems and spend time formatting documents.
And when a new quote needs to be created, they can just clone one of the previous building quotes and adjust and modify it to suit the new project.
Instead of spending valuable company time doing admin, companies and workers can spend their time making more accurate forecasts and creating more comprehensive quotes.
There are a lot of things which building and construction companies can do better when it comes to quoting and winning work – and some of them are easier than others.
You can instantly improve your quotes by using one of the building quote examples above (or below), which also gives you a glimpse into what is possible when using software and smart systems to manage these critical company documents and workflows.
People in 80+ countries use this financial software to better capture, organise and track project finances.

Making quotes in a scientific text

- What are the options for quoting

Quotations in a scientific work are a sign of the author’s knowledge of the topic, and not an attempt to borrow other people’s work. So that you are not accused of plagiarism, it is important to arrange quotes in accordance with all the rules and in accordance with GOST.
In this article, I will explain in detail how to competently use other people’s statements in my own scientific work.
There are 3 public citation options:
- Direct citation. Author’s words are transmitted without any changes. If you choose this way to quote a philosophical, journalistic or literary work, then it is important to mention the authorship and the title of the work from which the quote is taken.
- Indirect citation. You convey the author’s idea in your own words, using paraphrasing. Such quoting is simpler: there is no need to put what is quoted in quotation marks, name the work where the quotation comes from, and format all this as a footnote.
- Verbatim quotation. The strictest option, in which you need to use the author’s text without any changes, is to indicate the authorship and title of the work in a footnote. This option is similar to direct quoting, but with a small caveat.
You do not need to ask the original author for permission to quote verbatim, provided the purpose of the quote is justified.
If you need to quote a large amount of text, but not completely, but in chunks, then you need to put three dots in the gaps.
To highlight a quote in a scientific text, quotes are needed: ordinary, the same as in the original text. If the work is written in Russian, then the type of quotes used is Christmas trees (“„).
There are times when a quote already has quotation marks. In such cases, you need to use other quotes that are not similar to the main ones: paws (“”).
Example : “Andrei wrote in a letter about The Cherry Orchard as something incredible for Russian literature.”
A quotation in a scientific article begins with a capital letter:
- when in the original it is written with a capital letter and comes first, then in the article it immediately follows the colon;
- when it is the beginning of a new phrase and follows the period that ends the sentence before it. In this case, the first words of the quotation can be omitted;
- when there is a proper name at the beginning of the quotation. It doesn’t matter if some words are omitted at the beginning of the quote. Text that is quoted follows a colon.
Example No. 1.
Original : Only the truth, the bitter truth, can melt the ice of misunderstanding between people.
Quote : The famous philosopher Pupkin wrote: “Only the truth, the bitter truth can melt the ice of misunderstanding between people.”
Example No. 2.
Original : Most likely, it is better to use small but accurate words to describe autumn sadness.
Quote : “… Most likely, it is better to use small but precise words to describe autumn sadness,” the author wrote.
Example No. 3.
Original : As an example, Pupkin cites the words of major Russian philosophers of the 20th century.
Quote : “… Pupkin cites the words of major Russian philosophers of the 20th century.”
Citations in scientific articles begin with a small letter:
- if there are no first words in the 1st sentence that are in the middle of the main text (it doesn’t matter if after a colon or without it) and there are common nouns at their beginning;
- if the first words of the sentence are not omitted and are part of the main text phrase (the text does not follow the colon, but can be in the middle or at the end).
Example No. 1.
Original : The difference in the system of impressions of Sartre and Camus is obvious and beyond doubt
Quote : V. V. Pupkin wrote: “… the difference in the system of impressions of Sartre and Camus is obvious and beyond doubt.”
Sample #2.
Original : Artists can express emotions however they want.
Quote : N. N. Zhivotikov was sure that “artists can express emotions the way they want to.”
An ellipsis is used in cases where words are omitted in quotes – in the middle or in the end. If in the original they were highlighted with punctuation marks, then they are also skipped.
Nuance: the ellipsis is not separated from the last word by a space.
Original : Further in the text, at the moment of the completion of the blessing, the hero goes backstage.
Quote : “Further on… the hero goes backstage.”
The quote may consist of not one, but two or more sentences, and the initial words of the second of them may be omitted. The ellipsis used instead of the one missing in the quotation is submitted along with the first sentence.
Original : Two variants of the name will be denoted by the letters P and B. Let’s make a reservation that both options are conditional.
Quote : “We will designate two variants of the name with the letters P and B. … Both options are conditional.”
An ellipsis must also be used when individual sentences are omitted. The only caveat: such an ellipsis must be taken in angle brackets.
Whole statement. Whole statement.
Note that:
- if the previous sentence of the quoted person is given in whole form, then the ellipsis is connected to the dot;
- if words are omitted at the end of the previous quoted sentence or at the beginning of the next one, then an ellipsis should also be used.
Statement with last word omitted … … Statement with initial word omitted.
The meaning of such a citation is to format the citation in such a way that it is not recognized by the anti-plagiarism program as plagiarism.
Therefore, be sure to quote what is quoted, refer to the source. Only if these conditions are met, it is possible to pass a uniqueness check and subsequently publish an article in a scientific journal.
I hope this information will help you properly format any quote and publish an article.
Quotations in term paper

Properly formatted quotations in term paper according to GOST 2022 standards are one of the key evaluation criteria. Citation allows the author of the study to demonstrate the level of literacy when working with information sources, as well as to provide additional arguments for the correctness of the data with which he operates. It is difficult to overestimate the importance of following the rules for writing quotes, so it is useful for every student to familiarize themselves with them.
Quotes in a course project: definition and goals
Quotations are copied fragments of text from a publication. Different parts of textual information are subject to citation, for example, they include popular expressions, opinions of respected scientists, references to legal acts and norms, decoding of terminology and other elements.
The presence of citations is a prerequisite for writing high-quality attestation works, whether it is an abstract, term papers or graduation projects. There are rules for formatting other people’s conclusions and statements so that the author’s text in which they are mentioned is not recognized as plagiarism.
Purpose of citation in the study
The main tasks that the use of citations in the term paper is aimed at:
- confident argumentation of theories and results of the research project;
- demonstration of literary sources that served as the basis for writing a term paper;
- referral of the author of scientific research to the opinion of famous scientists and experts, legislation, artistic and scientific works, publications;
- focusing on key aspects of the study, their strengthening;
- giving scope and significance to research work;
- the ability to supplement overly serious information with witty phrases in accordance with the subject.
What quotations are used in the certification work
It is advisable to start familiarization with the rules for formatting a quotation by determining its type. There are two types of citation:
- straight;
- indirect.
How to format quotes correctly
When writing a term paper, two options for formatting quotations are allowed:
- “The exact phrase of the author” is the name of the author of the quote.
- Author’s name: “exact phrase”.
Quote example:
The author’s full name is often replaced by a surname with initials. In some cases, it is advisable to refer to the specific name of the information source for copying the quote. This information is duplicated in the list of references, which is the latest section of the course work.
Features of the design of indirect quotations
Using such a technique as paraphrasing, the author of the course project formulates indirect quotations. As a result, the student retells the words from the initial source in his own way. At the same time, the presence of a link to the source is a prerequisite. This method allows you to convey the meaning of sufficiently voluminous text fragments of scientific publications.
Indirect citation example:
Standard citation rules
There are a number of rules according to which citations should be made in the text of the term paper:
- Determination of clear citation boundaries. The optimal length of a quotation is several sentences.
- If a direct quotation is used, the text must be exactly the same as the original.
- Compliance with the grammatical form in which the textual information was originally presented.
- A mandatory condition for citation is the presence of a link to the author of the publication.
- An indication of the title and information about the source, which can be placed at the end of the quote in square brackets, at the bottom of the sheet, or in the list of references in the last section of the term paper.
- There is a limit on the number of quotes. As a rule, for one sheet of printed text, two fragments from someone else’s publication, properly designed, are enough.
- Compliance with the rules for citing in order to eliminate the risks of denial of admission to defense due to plagiarism.
- Full compliance of the given quotation with the subject of the research project.
- Excludes the repetition of information that is given in the form of a quote, the main text of the course work.
- Availability of transcripts for terms and definitions in the appendix to the attestation project.
Students often have a question about what to do when a quotation contains really important and necessary material for writing a term paper, but the volume of the test fragment is too large. It is advisable to replace the quote with a retelling of its key aspects, use an indirect format for presenting information, or refuse to quote at all.
Quoting in a term paper: specific features of citation formatting
When a student has determined what type a particular citation belongs to, which must be placed in the text of a scientific study, you can familiarize yourself with the specific rules for its formatting. The principle of action is quite simple and consists in copying a text fragment from the original source, pasting the material into a suitable place in the course project, highlighting the borrowed phrase using quotation marks. It is obligatory to indicate the author of the publication.
If the quote is direct, then it is printed with a capital letter, regardless of how the text is written in the original source. This rule is also true in cases where the citation follows the words of the author.
Citation example:
Then you can start the quote with a small letter.
An example of writing a quotation:
When an indirect quotation is at the very beginning of a sentence, the text is capitalized. If an indirect quotation is located in the middle of a sentence, then the author should start typing the phrase with a lowercase letter.
An example of a correct indirect quotation:
When studying a particular topic, a student has to study a variety of laws and regulations. In this case, it also becomes necessary to cite certain provisions and norms. You should be guided by the following scheme for the design of such citations in the term paper: indicate the phrase “ACCORDINGLY and the number of the paragraph, followed by the number of the article and the number of the federal law, the name of which is enclosed in quotation marks. It is necessary to complete the quotation by specifying the date and quoting a fragment from the law in question.
Punctuation when quoting
Eliminating errors in punctuation if quotations are used in the text of the course work is quite simple if the following rules are observed:
- The period is printed behind quotation marks.
- Other characters precede quotation marks or appear at the end of a quote.
- Dots are not required at the end of the ellipsis or after other characters.
Proper use of quotes in term paper
You cannot randomly fill the text of a research project with citations. The need for citation should be argued from a logical point of view. At the same time, text fragments of other authors should sound convincing and correspond to the issue under consideration. Many students are faced with the concept of citation sufficiency. It can be conditionally classified into three categories:
- insufficient;
- sufficient;
- redundant.
If the quotation is insufficient, then the content of the scientific work loses its value. When there are signs of overquoting, it overloads the argument and reduces the role of the author in conducting the research. Only relevant and well-formed quotations can transform a term paper.
Is it necessary to use citation when writing a course project
After choosing a topic for a research project, the student is provided with methodological recommendations and the most optimal list of information sources. You can demonstrate a high level of expertise when working with literature using citations. If quotes are used in the text of the course work, and their presence is justified, the author of the project deserves a decent assessment for the work done. In this regard, we can talk about the need for citation when writing a course project and other certification papers.
Citation rules that will help you successfully pass the anti-plagiarism check
Each term paper must meet strict requirements for uniqueness. Copying other people’s work will not allow the student to pass the anti-plagiarism test. As a result, such studies are not allowed to defend. For this reason, it is important to familiarize yourself with the rules for quoting.
In the case when you need to quote someone else’s work, regulations, excerpts from publications and laws, you should use the “Christmas tree” quotation marks. In some cases, when writing a term paper, students work with information sources published in a foreign language. Then it is advisable to use quotation marks “paws”. At the same time, it should be borne in mind that certain programs for checking scientific papers for plagiarism do not recognize these signs as a quotation design.
