Whether you’re looking to beat back the suffocating summer heat, or just want to increase airflow in your living room or bedroom, a ceiling fan can’t beat. Combined with an air conditioner, or even a ceiling fan on its own, can make a big difference in the perceived temperature of a room (and for much less money than running AC). And unlike box fans or floor fans, ceiling fans are very handy in a compact space – after all, what better way to increase your square footage than to use overhead space?

Here’s some more good news: if you have the right equipment, tools, and research, this project can be done by hand. (However, take the precaution of always taking extra care when handling any electrical wires. We recommend consulting a professional if you are not experienced with electrical wiring or similar installations.)

The main thing you will need to check if you are replacing a ceiling light with a ceiling fan is that you have the correct electrical box on the ceiling. First, turn off the power in the room you are in using the electrical panel. Failure to do so may result in electrical shock, so this step is extremely important. After making sure that there is no electricity in the room (by turning the lights on and off to check), unscrew the lamp from the ceiling. Use a voltage tester to make sure there are no live wires. Otherwise, you can check the electrical box where the light is installed. If the box matches the weight of the ceiling fan, it will say that it is with fan rating. (Note: Older models may not be labelled. In this case, consult a professional.) If your electrical box is indeed designed for a fan, follow these steps. If it is no with fan, you will need the help of a professional to install the corresponding electrical box. Otherwise, your ceiling fan could fly out – which is not ideal for hot summer days.

  • Ladder or ladder

1. Make sure the ceiling light is connected to the switch.

3. Unscrew the existing fixture and make sure the power is off completely.

Carefully unscrew the light and pull it down. At this point, you will see bare wires. Do not touch the wires with your hands. Instead, touch the wires with a voltage tester. It will light up if the wire is energized. If the wire is live, then you have not turned off the electricity in the room. Go back to the electrical panel to make sure you’ve turned off the power in the correct room and repeat the steps above until the wires you’re working on are no longer powered.

If the power is off, completely remove the ceiling light and set it aside.

For the next steps you will need to determine which of your wires is live and which is neutral. In newer homes they will be color coded with the black wire being the active or hot wire and the white wire being the neutral wire. In older houses, you will need to turn the power back on and then use a voltage tester to check which wire is live and which is not. Then turn off the power at the electrical panel, check with a voltage tester that there is no current flowing through the wires, and use electrical tape to mark which of the wires is live.
