How to Read Floor Plan Symbols

Here are some common symbols you will find on a floor plan:

Doors

Doors are represented with a curved line showing which way the door swings.

Windows

Stairs

Stairs have an arrow pointing to the highest point of the stair.

Compass

The compass symbol quickly shows you which direction North is.

Furniture

Furniture symbols will resemble the furniture they are representing – this one is a sofa with a coffee table.

How to make a house drawing with your own hands step by step instructions

Many people dream of building their own country house with good ecology and clean air, closer to nature. Where you can safely take a break from the city noise and relax, spending your time with family and friends. Surely, you see your future home not only beautiful, but also functional. But, if the house has a lot of details and corners, this does not mean that it will necessarily be comfortable. Therefore, before starting construction, it is necessary to draw a drawing of the house in order to avoid mistakes in the future that can delay construction for a long time.

What will be the layout of the house

Before you start drawing a house, you need to decide on its layout. House layout

begins, first of all, with the selection of a suitable site and the orientation of the building to the cardinal points, which affect the final placement of the rooms. In addition, you should immediately decide how many people will live in the house. To simplify the task, it is desirable from the very beginning to think over the number of rooms, their mutual arrangement and functional purpose.

Then you need to decide which rooms will be allocated for each person living in the house (for example, not only parents or children, but also nannies, guards, etc.). Naturally, the house should have common rooms in which all family members will gather, for example, a dining room and a living room.

An example of a successful layout of a one-story house

Be sure to take into account the hobbies of each person and think in advance about suitable premises for this (gym, library, sauna, winter garden, workshop, and others).

When planning bedrooms, keep in mind that rooms that are too large can make people feel anxious – it is better to make them small but cozy. The children’s room should be located not far from the parent’s, as the baby, in which case, may need the help of an adult.

If you are designing a large house and your children are still small, you can arrange a separate playroom or area for them. Each child loves something unusual and mysterious, so several rooms can be allocated for their games at once, in which they will create their own magical world with adventures.

Once you have decided on the layout of the house, try to mentally “live” in it for a while to understand if everything is so comfortable and good in it? Surely, you will want to redo something so that the end result is more perfect. All the ideas that have appeared should definitely be discussed with the family, because every person living in the house should experience the joy of being in it.

How to make ready-made drawings of houses

Before starting work, it is necessary, first of all, to decide on the purpose of the house.

  • What are you going to build: summer cottage or year-round housing?
  • How many people will live in the future house?
  • What is the lifestyle of homeowners? If you dream of peace and tranquility, then the house can be located at the beginning of the site, blocking the recreation area from the prying eyes of neighbors. Or vice versa – move it deeper, thereby allowing passers-by to admire the beautiful landscape and the facade of the building.
  • In addition to all this, when developing a drawing of a house, geodetic surveys and the presence of a slope on the site should be taken into account, which can also change the original plan.

After that, when you already know the approximate position of the house on the site and so on, you can begin to draw up its drawing. The initial drawing can be done very quickly even with your own hands, without the use of computer programs.

Sample initial house drawing

Sketch preparation

You can prepare a draft design on your own, giving you the basis for a more detailed drawing with sketches and layouts, as well as for creative style and space solutions.

This stage includes the preparation of drawings of all floors of the house, the plan of the roof and buildings. In addition, an approximate front view of the facade is depicted here, as well as a longitudinal and transverse section of the building. They mark all the available design features and materials that will be used for construction.

Architectural design stage

The architectural stage of creating a house drawing is one of the most interesting and exciting moments. It describes the location of the rooms and their sizes, some additional rooms are considered, the position of windows and doors is also noted.

An example of a finished architectural drawing of a private house

At this stage, the material from which the house will subsequently be built is taken into account. The thickness of the walls, the dimensions of doors and windows will depend on his choice. The end result will be a large set of drawings with a number of explanatory notes. You can make drawings manually or using specialized computer programs.

Constructive design stage

At this stage, all elements of the house, foundation features are designed, materials for interior and exterior wall decoration are selected. In total, a set of necessary drawings is created with a description of all the structural parts of the future structure. Irreplaceable materials must be clearly calculated and purchased immediately in the right quantity.

Engineering and technical scheme

The project in engineering and technical design is one of the most important sections, which is not given too much attention when planning buildings. Despite this, without it it is unlikely that it will be possible to build a suitable and solid house. It includes the design of the most important water supply structures, in addition to heating, ventilation and electrical systems.

Engineering design of a private house

This calculation must include the consistent execution of works on laying communications, which are necessary for the life of the owners. This project document contains complete additional information about the design capacity of the building, about the installation of electrical wiring, about the lightning protection system and protection against rain lightning. Additionally, the installation of a security system is included in the project.

House design project

The final design stage. At this stage, they decide what appearance the future house will acquire, as well as what the interior decoration of the premises will be. Of course, it is better if the design project is thought out at the stage of preparation of the main project.

What to focus on when making drawings

The project should be started as a whole, taking into account all the engineering and structural characteristics of the house. When constructing a building, you need to think about the possibilities of arranging electricity, water supply and sewerage even at the time of purchasing the land. Even if the development of drawings is carried out very carefully, a poorly informed person may still not take into account all the subtleties. Because of this, during construction, unforeseen circumstances may arise that will slow down construction for quite a significant period.
