How To Get Rid of and Kill Fleas in a Carpet

1. Treat Your Pet First

The first step towards getting rid of fleas in your carpet should always be to treat your pet. If you don’t do this, you’ll end up reinfesting your carpet with flea eggs after you’ve treated it and will have to start the whole process over. Adult female fleas can lay up to 50 eggs a day, which will roll off your pet and into your carpet, where they hatch within one to two weeks. Treat your pet with oral medication and a thorough bath to kill any adult fleas before you start to treat your carpet.

2. Use a Flea Bomb With an IGR Ingredient

Most flea bombs use chemicals that are only meant to kill the adults, which means that generic flea bombs won’t kill any eggs sitting on your carpet and waiting to hatch. To kill the eggs and adults, use a flea bomb fogger that contains an IGR (Insect Growth Regulator) ingredient called (S)-Methoprene that interrupts the flea life cycle. This flea bomb will also get into the upholstery of your furniture and kill any adults or eggs that have made their home there.

3. Vacuum Thoroughly

Once you have treated your pet and your home, you should vacuum your carpet as thoroughly as possible. This will get rid of any flea dirt that may have been tracked into the house, as well as any living eggs that might have gotten past the flea bomb fogger. Vacuuming in conjunction with flea control products is the best way to thoroughly remove any potential female fleas or eggs left in the carpet. Make sure you empty the vacuum bag after using it.

4. Steam Clean Your Carpet

Once you’ve vacuumed and treated your pets, wait at least a week and then steam clean your carpet. If you steam clean too soon, you risk undoing the IGR and allowing new fleas to hatch. You will have to live with the smell of the flea bomb for the week before you use the steam cleaner, but it’ll be worth it to know that your home and pets don’t have a flea infestation anymore.

How to Prevent Fleas from Getting in a Carpet

1. Clean Pet Bedding

To keep fleas from getting into your carpet, clean any bedding your pets use at least once a week with hot water. This will help prevent eggs from hatching and keep flea larvae from getting to the reproduction stage. It will also give your pet a cleaner, safer place to sleep.

2. Treat Pets With Preventive Medication

One of the best ways to prevent fleas from getting into your carpet is to keep them off your pets to begin with. Give your pets preventive medication or a flea collar to keep fleas out of the house and out of the carpet. If they don’t have a chance to get on your pets in the first place, you won’t develop a flea problem down the line.

3. Trim Vegetation

Fleas live in tall grass and vegetation, where they latch onto your pet as they walk past. If you keep the plants and grass in your yard trimmed, your pets will receive fewer flea bites, and you will need to do less flea control in and around your home. It will also help reduce the number of ticks and other insects that could get inside by hitching a ride on your pets.

4. Bathe Your Pets

Giving your pets regular baths will help prevent fleas and keep them from getting into your carpet. Use a gentle pet shampoo and thoroughly scrub them, checking your dogs or cats for fleas as you do. This process will remove adult fleas and also any flea eggs that might be stuck in their fur.

5. Use a Flea Comb

Flea combs are incredibly fine-toothed combs that you can use to get rid of fleas before they have a chance to get in the house. If your pet has been outside, take a few minutes and comb them before bringing them in. This will help remove any fleas or ticks that they may have picked up while they were out in the yard or at the park.

Essential Guides

Fleas in Carpet – Marafet

If there are pile products in your house or apartment, then sooner or later you may encounter a problem that will bring you very serious troubles. In particular, this can happen if you have animals. It doesn’t matter who it is, a dog or a cat, the chances of catching an infection are rapidly increasing.

No less serious disaster will be the attack of earth fleas. In the vast majority of cases, people who live on the lower floors suffer from such insects. Fleas get into the dwelling from cellars, kitchen gardens and gardens, which are located next to the dwelling. As you might guess, this article will be about parasites and insects that enter homes and settle in a carpet or rug.

In this article we will tell you how to get fleas out of the carpet, how insects get into your home, how to find and identify fleas in the carpet, tell you what folk remedies exist and what preparations will help get rid of carpet fleas.

Appearance of fleas: how to recognize an insect and distinguish it from others

Before you start a war with blood-drinking parasites, you must first identify them among other brethren. The body of fleas is quite narrow. It is compressed laterally. When examined under a magnifying glass or microscope, hairs and bristles can be seen throughout the flea’s body. Thanks to them, fleas are kept in the fur of animals and crawl on the carpet. On the head of fleas, you can see specific ridges with large teeth, which are called ctenidia.

Fleas are small. The body length of an adult can vary from one to five millimeters. However, you can see sexually mature females 1 centimeter long. Fleas have special antennae on their heads. During mating, the male holds the female with them.

Fleas have 3 pairs of limbs. The most powerful are located in the chest area. It is they that allow the flea to move rapidly and calmly stay on the surface of any material.

Carpet fleas do not crawl on the floor, but jump, pushing off the surface with two rear pairs of legs. Due to the speed of these insects, it is almost impossible to catch. They feel every fluctuation in the air and immediately change their location when they feel threatened.

Signs of carpet fleas in the carpet in your apartment

As we wrote above, fleas are microscopic in size and able to move quickly in the house. For this very reason, carpet fleas can live for months before you first see them. However, there is a method that can indicate the presence of fleas in the carpet in your home.

The main food in the diet of fleas is blood. Parasites have piercing-sucking mouthparts, which they use without any hesitation.

Fleas bite as follows:
  1. Insects fix on the skin of the victim;
  2. During a flea bite, a special substance is injected into the blood;
  3. Bloodsuckers suck out the amount of blood they need to survive and leave the victim’s body.
After drinking blood, a flea can grow significantly in size.

How to remove fleas from the carpet and at home

If for some reason your carpet has become a habitat for small bloodsuckers, then we strongly do not recommend letting everything take its course. How to get rid of carpet fleas, those who have encountered this will teach. However, you can clear your apartment of reptiles after you study the content of this material.

To begin with, we note that it is real to destroy fleas. To do this, there are two approaches that are fundamentally different from each other. These are the methods: mechanical (cleaning, brushes, etc.) and chemical (using chemicals, insecticides, and so on). People use both special preparations and folk remedies.

The choice in favor of one of the existing means is up to you. Start from your own preferences.

Mechanical cleaning

To get rid of fleas in the house, it is necessary to carry out a thorough and thorough general cleaning. Fleas live in the carpet, so it is the carpet that needs to be cleaned. Note that if you are used to vacuuming the carpet, then this method will not help get rid of parasites in the carpets.

How to Vacuum Carpet for Fleas:
  • Before cleaning the carpet, clean the vacuum cleaner filters and empty the bag;
  • Carpets must be vacuumed at the maximum power of the device. The process should last at least a quarter of an hour;
  • It is not enough just to move the vacuum cleaner over the entire area of the carpet. It is necessary to exert maximum pressure on the nozzle so that the pile with fleas is pressed;
  • Carpet can only be treated for fleas with sequential cleaning. Go through the entire carpet area in successive stripes. Choose a plot of several square meters, clean it and move on;
  • Vacuum gently the carpet and floors that are located under the furniture. Fleas lead a lifestyle in which they choose to live in a place in the dark, which is difficult to get close to. To get to the fleas, use the narrow nozzle on the vacuum cleaner;
  • To completely remove fleas from a carpet or carpet, this operation must be repeated twice a day for several weeks. A clean home is a guarantee that parasites will be uncomfortable living in your home.
Getting rid of fleas at home is quite possible, although quite difficult. In addition to the carpet, other things should also be processed. They live in a variety of places, so pillows, curtains, soft toys, rugs, upholstered furniture and other places need to be vacuumed at maximum speed.

Expert pest control

It’s best to leave the job to the experts. How to eradicate fleas from a house, any room and from a carpet, specialists from insecticidal companies are well aware. If the appearance of bloodsuckers unsettled you and you do not want to solve such an unpleasant issue on your own, then the employees of our company will be happy to help you with this.

First, an expert comes to your home and examines the places where parasites live. A preliminary check and survey of the apartment allows you to accurately determine the source of infection and the area where blood-drinking insects are most concentrated.

The next step is the development of an individual pest control strategy.

In the fight against fleas, there are many different methods and technologies. The choice of chemical agent is based on the financial capabilities of the client, as well as on the number of fleas at the facility. Details can be obtained after consultation.

The most popular products against carpet fleas

If you want to treat fleas from a carpet that has a long pile, then you will definitely not be able to get by with one vacuum cleaner. That’s why you have to rely on chemicals.

The cheapest way to clean a carpet is with sprays, which are sold in any store. This is “Raid”, “Raptor”, “Dichlorvos” and so on. Surely you will not have problems with the choice of drugs, as there are a huge number of them.

Experts identify a number of the most effective chemicals. Use them if your carpet has become a haven for uninvited bloodsuckers. Among them are Medilis Super and Medilis Malathion. There are other drugs, but we advise you to treat your house or apartment with these.

After you have applied the product in problem areas, you need to let it brew. For a certain time, all carpet fleas will have time to die. Each product has a different exposure time (it is indicated on the package), but we advise you not to rinse it off for 24 hours.

After a day, the carpet must be thoroughly vacuumed, collecting dead insects. After that, start removing the applied product. There are two ways in which this can be done.

The first way is to thoroughly wash the carpet. To do this, prepare a solution of soap and washing soda (once will not be enough). The second option is to take it to the dry cleaners. Specialists know their business and you do not have to worry about the quality of the service provided.

Any of the above can be simply sprayed, but it is much better to rub it into the carpet with a brush or rag. Attention, be sure to wear rubber or textile gloves so that the product does not get on your skin.

Where do fleas come from in the carpet

If parasites somehow got into your house, then they will look for soft textiles for their home. This type of coating is considered by fleas to be the best. And the carpet is not their only favorite place. Carpet fleas can easily get into a closet with linens or clothes. Do not forget that this small insect is capable of jumping to a height of up to one meter, and it will not be difficult for it to climb into the most remote places.

As soon as the female flea has found a suitable place to live, she starts breeding. Moreover, fleas multiply extremely rapidly. In one day, an adult female can lay up to 25 eggs. If the treatment of carpet, furniture and the entire apartment from fleas is not timely, then the problem can become enormous.

After hatching, the larvae quickly form a cocoon around themselves. Already there they can exist from two weeks to five months. They leave their cozy home from mechanical stimulation. It is enough for them to feel the vibration that accompanies a person walking around the apartment.

Adults live on dogs and cats. They feed on the blood of pets and humans. But for all other stages of insect development, floors, carpets, and upholstered furniture become the best conditions for growth. This is why it is so easy to find fleas in the carpet and why the treatment should affect these particular locations.

How to protect your home from bloodsuckers

Start by forming a clear habit of cleaning regularly. The cleaner the dwelling, the less likely it is that arthropod pests will penetrate it. An excellent prophylactic will be a solution of wormwood. Treat the room with it, and fleas will not penetrate into it.

Dogs or cats often bring bloodsuckers into the house. If you walk your animals outside, wash them with special shampoos that prevent infection.

If you live in a high-rise apartment building, then uninvited guests can get to you from the basement. Make sure the basement is free from these parasites. If you still find them there, then you will not be able to do without the help of specialists.

You don’t have to fight fleas if you prevent them from entering your home. To do this, it is enough to follow a number of simple recommendations.

Why are fleas dangerous?

The pet loses appetite and sleep, constantly itches and looks for parasites in its fur. But a small insect spoils the life of not only cats and dogs. Fleas carry infections that are dangerous to humans: plague, salmonellosis, typhus, hepatitis B, C – and this is not the whole list.

Where do fleas come from in the house?

Fleas are very prolific: in 2 years of life, the female lays about 500 eggs, which in 2 weeks begin a full life and active reproduction. Insects need a source of food and a place to lay their eggs. Therefore, they tend to get into the nest of a wild animal – a rabbit or a squirrel, or into a city apartment. How do they do it?

  • a domestic animal brings one or more insects on its fur from the street;
  • on the soles of shoes, flea eggs are brought into the apartment;
  • fleas enter the apartment from neighbors;
  • from the basement or from the attic, insects can enter the nearest apartments

Getting rid of fleas: 5 steps to freedom from insects

The difficulty in removing fleas from the apartment lies in the fact that they multiply very quickly. The treatment of individual surfaces does not help: in other places, pupae remain, which become fleas, bite a person or animal, and you have to start fighting again. Fleas live on the floor, under skirting boards, in beds and other objects located at a height of no more than one and a half meters.

Start your home treatment with flea control for your pet. The animal must be washed with a special shampoo, and then treated with a spray and put on an insecticidal collar.

How to get rid of fleas: treatment of the apartment

  1. Wash all bed linen and bedspreads at a temperature of 60C and above. Wash the dog bed, cat house or mattress, too, and if this is not possible, throw it away.
  2. Vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture. Do not forget about all the rugs and rugs that lie on the floor and hang on the walls. Immediately after cleaning, empty the contents of the vacuum cleaner into the toilet or take the tightly tied bag outside before the insects scatter.
  3. Wash the floor with water containing wormwood essential oil. Insect eggs will be washed away, and they will not lay new ones on the surface with the smell of wormwood for some time. Especially carefully you need to wash the corners, skirting boards and the floor under the furniture.
  4. All things that cannot be cleaned and washed should be thrown away. If fleas live in an old chair and lay eggs there, it will be a constant source of parasites.
  5. Thoroughly wash all outdoor shoes with a sponge and detergent. Then you can be sure that there will be no flea eggs left on the soles.

Overview of effective anti-flea products for home and pets

Flea tenacious. A powerful chitinous shell – the exoskeleton protects it from mechanical damage and the effects of chemicals. But there are insecticides that affect the nervous system of insects, destroy the chitinous shell and bring inevitable death to them. Such products should contain the following substances:

  • pyrethrins are natural insecticides that are safe for human and animal health. An insect is paralyzed, after which it dies;
  • pyrethroids (permethrin, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, etc.) are synthetic pesticides with a stronger effect than pyrethrins. Negatively affect the nervous system of pets and fish;
  • Imidacloprid is a neonicotinoid pesticide. Pyrethroid analogue;
  • nitenpyram is a medicine that is taken by mouth. Kills fleas in a maximum of 1.5 hours. Safe for humans and animals;

Flea Insecticides: Which Weapon to Choose?

The desire to get rid of insects should not end with the poisoning of humans or domestic animals. Before use, it is necessary to study the instructions, calculate the dosage and, if necessary, isolate animals and children during treatment.

Home anti-flea products

The use of organophosphorus compounds such as dichlorvos, karbophos, chlorpyrifos, chlorophos, and the like in indoor areas is an unjustified risk. Yes, they are effective, but at the same time very dangerous for humans.

Dichlorvos-based sprays are inexpensive, but it’s worth looking at more than just price. What else can be found on the insecticide market:

  • Sinuzan is a strong odor agent based on chlorpyrifos. Professional exterminators work with it. Spray in a respirator, goggles and gloves;
  • Get is a chlorpyrifos granular concentrate for home use. Often they sell non-original goods, which means they are ineffective.

Effective pyrethroid flea sprays

Synthetic pyrethroid insecticides are conveniently applied in spray or aerosol form. Analogues of natural pyrethrins are not inferior to them in their insecticidal qualities, but at the same time they are safe for humans and pets. The undeniable advantage of aerosols is that adult insects and larvae are destroyed in one treatment.

When using a flea spray or aerosol:
  • clear the area of people and pets. Cover the aquarium with glass and turn off the compressor;
  • tightly close doors and windows during treatment and do not open for 2-3 hours after it;
  • start processing from the bottom – up: floor, plinth, inner surface of furniture, bed linen, soft toys, curtains;
  • after treatment and ventilation, wash the floor and wipe down all horizontal surfaces. Bed linen and toys treated with the product should be washed at a temperature of 60 C ‘.
Which agents are trustworthy:
  • Dichlorvos TM is a well-established agent for combating flying and crawling insects. It takes up to 10 ml of solution per 1 m2. Food and utensils must be removed during processing. A closed room is processed that cannot be ventilated for 3 hours;
  • Raptor – aerosol based on cypermethrin kills crawling insects. Effective, odorless, non-toxic to humans and animals;
  • Raid “from cockroaches from ants” destroys all crawling insects, including fleas and bedbugs;
  • Combat Super Spray is a broad-spectrum aerosol. The synthetic pyrethroids cyfenotrin and imiprotin kill adult insects and eggs;
  • Dr.Klaus is suitable for processing apartments, houses and adjacent areas

Flea powders

Powders are not as easy to use as sprays. They are cheaper, but they are not as effective. The substance is scattered in the habitats of insects: on the floor, baseboards, carpets. The likelihood that fleas will die is small – fleas die only if their body comes into contact with insecticide. You should not expect an immediate effect from the use of these drugs.

The following powders are most commonly used:

  • Feverfew is a natural preparation based on chamomile extract. Effective and safe.
  • Delicia – based on chlorpyrifos. The drug is effective only for the fight against cat and dog fleas.
  • Phenaksin fights not only fleas, but also flies.
  • Dust Clean House destroys fleas, bedbugs, cockroaches and ants.

How to get rid of fleas by folk methods?

Folk ways to deal with fleas – first of all, the use of odors that are unpleasant for insects. Bitter wormwood is not tolerated by many insects, including fleas, but the plant does not destroy them, but repels them.

Pyrethrium – Persian chamomile contains pyrethrins, which are harmful to fleas. But in order for the insects to die, you will have to strew the floor with fresh stems and leaves of the plant for a day.

Instead of pyrethrium, you can line the floor with fresh pine sawdust, or spray the floor, baseboards and walls with an infusion of wormwood, mint, eucalyptus, or tansy.

The advantage of folk methods is that you do not need to purchase a specialized preparation, but you can use improvised means. Minus – an unguaranteed result and the danger of spoiling the interior and things in the process of the insect extermination experiment. In addition, treatment with these agents must be carried out at a certain frequency: it will not be possible to eliminate the entire population at a time. Below are some even more original and even extreme ways to deal with insects.

What do fleas dislike? Extreme recipes:

  • Rub a mixture of baking soda and salt into the carpet and leave overnight. Vacuum in the morning;
  • Apply a mixture of yeast and garlic to floors and carpets. Leave overnight;
  • spray a mixture of a bucket of water and 100 ml of kerosene around the apartment and close the doors and windows;
  • Sprinkle borax powder on the floor and carpet and leave overnight. The chemical is dangerous for children and pregnant women.

Heat treatment of flea control room

Fleas are killed at temperatures below -20 C’ and above 50 C’. To bring them out, you can organize:

  • freezing for at least a day. It is not worth it in a city apartment: in severe frost, central heating pipes can burst and their repair will cost more than calling a pest control;
  • heating the room above 50 C’ can be done with a heat gun, which is used by exterminators

Call in professionals to fight fleas

If you don’t want to start a war with fleas, entrust the release of the apartment from intruders to mercenary exterminators. Their composure and great experience in this matter help to quickly defeat the enemy. The cost of professional flea control is higher than the cost of a can of insecticidal spray, but the specialist gives a guarantee and does the job as soon as possible.

Call the specialist and tell them if there are many fleas in the apartment. It is important to choose the right drug and equipment.

Before the exterminator arrives, prepare the apartment for treatment

  • people and pets must leave the apartment for the duration of the treatment;
  • cover the aquarium with glass and turn off the air supply;
  • remove bed linen and bedspreads, move furniture away from walls;
  • throw away old clothes that may have flea colonies;
  • hide food and utensils;
  • Prepare cleaning supplies after disinfection.

Prevention: to avoid fleas

We tell you what to do so that fleas do not like it in your home.

  • wet cleaning at least once a week;
  • vacuum the floor, carpets, skirting boards and all cracks every 5-7 days;
  • for a pet, purchase a special collar or drops at the withers;
  • wash outdoor shoes periodically.
